- 0:07The San Diego Padres faced the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium for a Saturday night game on April 10, 1971.
- 0:14The San Diego franchise was in its third season under manager Preston Gomez and were still a fairly awful team,
- 0:20despite improving by 11 games in 1970 after 110 lost season in 1969.
- 0:26Los Angeles was managed by Walt Alston in his 17th season as skipper.
- 0:30The Dodgers had been an average team for the past four or five seasons following their success in the mid-1960s,
- 0:35but showed some signs of life after finishing in second place in the NL West in 1970 with the rise of youngsters Bill Buckner, Steve Garvey, and Bill Russell.
- 0:44This audio recording is from the Dodgers radio broadcast featuring announcers Vin Scully and Jerry Doggett.
- 0:49Run the way in a moment, now our national anthem.
- 0:56Here are the bodybuilders, first for San Diego, Dave Campbell who dropped in second place.
- 1:01Tommy Dean in first stop.
- 1:03Terrence Gaston in center field.
- 1:07Nate Colbert at first base.
- 1:10Ollie Brown in right.
- 1:13Al Ferraro in left and the Dodgers take the field.
- 1:18First counter, Zerro is the catcher.
- 1:22Ron Swolcom playing third base.
- 1:25And Dave Roberts will be the first base of the pitcher batting in the ninth spot.
- 1:30Dave Roberts.
- 1:31For the Dodgers, Maury Wills is short.
- 1:34Manny Moda in left.
- 1:39Wes Parker at first base.
- 1:43Richie Allen playing left field.
- 1:46Bill Sudeikis catching.
- 1:49Steve Garvey at third.
- 1:52Willie Davis in center.
- 1:55Bill Russell at second.
- 1:59And Todd Osteen to do the pitching.
- 2:01Osteen is one and all on the year, 2-2 last year and 4-3 last time with San Diego.
- 2:07So second game of the series.
- 2:09The Dodgers trying to square it up and will get set for the finale tomorrow.
- 2:13Tom Bevis will go against Don Sutton in the finale here tomorrow.
- 2:19On the home schedule next week, the Chicago Cubs come in Monday and Tuesday.
- 2:24St. Louis Wednesday, Thursday and then over the weekend will be the Houston Astros.
- 2:28Osteen who pitched the shot out in his last outing against the Astros in Houston.
- 2:33Trying to get the Dodgers even in the series against the San Diego Padres here tonight.
- 2:37The Padres won last night by a score of 6-3.
- 2:42A quick check of the scores. We gave the nice way scores a little earlier.
- 2:45In the American League, Milwaukee beat California 4-3.
- 2:49Minnesota 5-3 over Chicago.
- 2:52Baltimore beat Detroit 2-1.
- 2:54New York 6, Washington nothing.
- 2:56Cleveland 11, Boston 10.
- 2:58Oakland 5 and Kansas City 4.
- 3:00Now we're all set. Time to play ball.
- 3:02The Dodgers and the Padres are now for the play-by-play.
- 3:04Here's Wynne Scheller. Vinnie?
- 3:06Thank you, Jerry. Hi everybody and a very pleasant good evening to you.
- 3:08On this Saturday night, ladies night at Dodger Stadium.
- 3:11Dave Campbell, the second baseman, will start it off followed by Tommy Dean and Clarence Gatson.
- 3:17It was Campbell who lifted the pop-fly last night as leadoff man
- 3:21that started the undoing and downfall of Bill Singer and the ball club.
- 3:25Osteen, the only Dodger of the victory and it was a tough 2-0 shutout against Houston.
- 3:31Ended the wind up in delivers and the fastball is low and run away.
- 3:35Wilbur Starjo of the Fitzberg Pirates has hit three home runs in his game.
- 3:40His third came in the eighth inning, so the odds are against him coming to bat in the ninth.
- 3:46But if they had a sizable rally, he'd probably have one more chance.
- 3:50The 1-0 pitch to Campbell is low ball 2, 2-0.
- 4:00Dave Campbell, Tommy Dean and Clarence Gatson.
- 4:03Campbell hitting.353.
- 4:07Osteen nods yes to Sudeikis, end of the wind up in the 2-0.
- 4:10Fastball, line drive, base hit into left center field.
- 4:14Dave is up with the ball, Campbell a turn and holding.
- 4:17So Dave Campbell opens up with a criss-single to center and the batter will be Tommy Dean.
- 4:24Tommy Dean and Dave Campbell are in the starting lineup because the plan for Preston Gomez was scrambled by injuries.
- 4:32He figured to have Don Mason and Angel Hernandez, his second and shortstop respectively,
- 4:37but they were both injured and Campbell and Dean are making the most of the opportunity.
- 4:43Dean right hand batter, Parker holding the bag on Campbell.
- 4:47Osteen to a stretch, a check of first, he goes over there.
- 4:50Campbell is going and I think a balk has been called and a balk has been called by first face on fire,
- 4:57first, Pellicudas. So that means Dave Campbell goes to second.
- 5:02And apparently Pellicudas claimed that Osteen started at the left hand and his right leg would be the guilty part.
- 5:11And that the right leg started to come towards home plate and then he threw over to first.
- 5:16And of course the idea is you must step in the direction you throw.
- 5:20And Pellicudas pantomiming Osteen's move saying,
- 5:23that leg started to go towards home when you threw to first.
- 5:27So it's a balk and Dave Campbell moves to second.
- 5:32So last night there was a two base error on a pop fly.
- 5:35Tonight a base hit and a balk.
- 5:37A veteran pitcher on the mound.
- 5:40And now Tommy Dean will try and at least hit the ball the other way to see if he can't get his man to third.
- 5:46Osteen set at the belt.
- 5:51As we look at second, works the plate.
- 5:53It's butted foul up along first and the count on one.
- 5:57Claude Osteen has not committed a balk in a game since 1965.
- 6:05And that one balk he committed in 1965 had been the only balk he had ever made in the National League.
- 6:15So he balked tonight and that's a rather momentous occasion for Claude.
- 6:20One of the things for Osteen about you can't teach an old dog new tricks,
- 6:25he is trying to learn a new move to first and that might have contributed to the balk.
- 6:30Dean around a bunt and fouls it the other way off to the left of the plate in the count on two.
- 6:35But that's the way this season has started.
- 6:38A fellow who hadn't balked in almost seven years and who balked only three times in the season.
- 6:44And who balked only once and he started in the National League in 1957.
- 6:49Balked tonight.
- 6:51So Campbell is the second, 0-2 the count to Tommy Dean.
- 6:59The parade of the big boys follow with Gaston, Colbert and Brown.
- 7:040-2 to Dean.
- 7:06Osteen set, a look at Campbell, works the plate and it's low and inside, ball one.
- 7:111-2. Osteen 2-2 the Padres last year.
- 7:16He started five times against them.
- 7:18He pitched well.
- 7:20His ERA was 2.4.
- 7:22And he split four decisions.
- 7:24Lifetime he's 4-3.
- 7:291-2 the count to Tommy Dean.
- 7:34Osteen is a bell to check if Campbell and the breaking ball is fouled back on a full swing.
- 7:39So it's still 1-2.
- 7:56Just the start of the ballgame.
- 7:58Still full of a care and it's been part of Saturday with it.
- 8:02Osteen on the rubber, now set at the bell.
- 8:04Looks at Campbell, checks him a second time and the 1-2 pitch is strike three, called.
- 8:09Fast ball got the inside corner and down goes Tommy Dean.
- 8:18One out and Clarence Gaston, the center fielder coming up.
- 8:21Gaston hitting 2-94.
- 8:25He had a double last night.
- 8:27Right hand batter.
- 8:29He also made a picture play on a line drive by Bill Sabatis.
- 8:34Turned in a fine defensive play.
- 8:36Clarence Gaston.
- 8:43Osteen up on top and set.
- 8:44On deck is Nate Colbert.
- 8:46Left hander works the play and there's a ground ball wide, a third Garvey in front of Will.
- 8:50Close to Falka for the out and Campbell is still a second base.
- 8:54So we have two down and here is Nate Colbert.
- 9:03Colbert last year was a one man wrecking crew against the Dodgers.
- 9:07He hit seven home runs against the Dodgers.
- 9:10So I figured he would have a key hit last night.
- 9:13He doubled home three, picked up the three RBIs.
- 9:17And in four games he has two home runs, a double and seven runs batted in.
- 9:23The label Handel with care is applied to Nate Colbert.
- 9:26Fast ball hit down to Garvey.
- 9:28He has it, sets himself, throws low, dug out by Falka.
- 9:33No runs, one hit, a rare ball.
- 9:36The man left his second and at the end of the half an inning.
- 9:38Padres nothing, Dodgers coming up.
- 9:43Padres turned away empty handed.
- 9:45We'll set them defensively for you now.
- 9:47On the mat, left hander Dave Roberts and behind the play Chris Cannazero.
- 9:51In the second field is Nate Colbert and Dave Campbell.
- 9:54The shortstop is Tommy Dean and the third baseman is Ron Swocum.
- 9:58In the outfield Al Ferraro plays instead of Larry Stahl against the left hander.
- 10:03In center, Clarence Gaston and in right, Holly Brown.
- 10:07The Dodgers will have Maury Wills, Manny Moda and Wes Parker.
- 10:11With left hander Roberts going, Willie Davis has been dropped to the number seven spot in the Dodger lineup.
- 10:19Dave Roberts from Gallopolis, Ohio.
- 10:25He'll be 27 a little bit later on.
- 10:32With San Diego last year, Dave was eight and 14.
- 10:37Roberts will pitch to Wills, Moda and Parker, bottom of the third.
- 10:44Dave checking with Cannazero.
- 10:46Now the left hander ready without a windup.
- 10:49Works the fastball, swung on and missed on one.
- 11:02Oh and one to Maury Wills.
- 11:04Roberts comes back with a fastball that's lifted down the right field line, slicing away from Holly Brown,
- 11:09but he's over there to catch it and fouls around.
- 11:12Maury Wills fouls out to Holly Brown, one away and the batter Manny Moda.
- 11:23Moda hitting 250.
- 11:26Wills is up there hitting 267.
- 11:41Roberts delivers fastball low, ball one, one and all.
- 11:45Roberts last year had one stretch in September, pitched 28 on a third scoreless inning.
- 11:51He only had five straight victories during that span, beating Atlanta twice and the Dodgers.
- 11:57The one-oh pitch over for Strykes.
- 12:01In his first appearance against the Dodgers last year, in relief in April, he retired 18 in a row.
- 12:11The one-one pitch on the way, off-speed grounded to third and right through Ron Slocum's leg.
- 12:17Moda makes a turn and holds on and Ferrara gets the ball back into Tommy Dean.
- 12:22So Ron Slocum, who is listed as a catcher and who filled in for Ed Spizio last night, draws an error.
- 12:29And Nevada will be West Parker.
- 12:37West Parker, check-in, hitting 214.
- 12:42He has three hits.
- 12:44It does not tell the truth, however, as to how he's been hitting the ball.
- 12:47He hit the ball very hard in Houston, but he kept hitting it at people.
- 12:51One-and-oh to count.
- 12:59One ball and no strikes to West.
- 13:02Moda off the bag, held on by Colbert.
- 13:05Roberts does a look. Now the left-hander delivers.
- 13:07Parker punches one to the right side.
- 13:09Over to get it is Campbell. He goes to Dean. Back to Colbert, not in time.
- 13:13Nice fourth play. Campbell and Dean nipping Manny Moda at second base.
- 13:19Two down. Parker at first, and here is Richie Allen.
- 13:30Richie Allen played last night and what he did to accommodate that sore foot.
- 13:38He was wearing one shoe, one size larger than the others.
- 13:42The pitch to Rich, low ball one.
- 13:45It supports tonight, however, that the swelling has started to come down and he feels much better.
- 13:50He's put in a pretty tough week with a bad foot.
- 13:53Allen has not gotten to go yet. He's one for nine. One RBI.
- 13:58Roberts at the belt. Dave delivers, and it's swung on and missed.
- 14:01It looks like he turned that thing over. One-and-one.
- 14:11Dave Roberts, veteran pitcher. Left-hander has a look at Parker.
- 14:17Now the pitch to Allen is grounded foul outside of third in the count one and two.
- 14:32Roberts, a good pitcher, and he's also a pretty good hitter.
- 14:35The Dodgers will have to keep that in mind.
- 14:37He had two home runs last year against Montreal and Cincinnati.
- 14:42He was originally signed by the Pirates, and he was drafted by San Diego.
- 14:48Next one in the dirt, pushed out in front of the plate in the count two and two.
- 14:55Dave trying to protect himself for the day when he can't fit.
- 14:59He spent two years as an apprentice boiler maker.
- 15:02He's also been an automobile salesman in the offseason.
- 15:07He also plays the drums, but he figures to have a good career.
- 15:11He's just really starting out. 27-2 pitch, fastball low, ball three.
- 15:16So Dave Roberts, with two down, has Parker at first, and he's gone all the way to Richie Allen.
- 15:25Allen, like any other player, coming to a new ball club.
- 15:28And of course, he's long since proved himself to everybody in the league,
- 15:32but you know he's trying extra hard to impress his new friends.
- 15:36Richie has chased and missed, and he went after a bad ball.
- 15:39So Richie is pressing, no doubt about it. Strikes out.
- 15:42An error and a man left, and at the end of an inning, no score.
- 15:47Easter is almost here, and it's a happy day.
- 15:50So make the most of it. Have an egg hunt for the youngsters.
- 15:53Right in your home with spring flowers.
- 15:55Don your finest binary for the Easter parade.
- 15:57And by all means, after the ballgame, feast yourself on a plump, perfect Farmer John Ham.
- 16:03Ham is an Easter tradition, and here in the West, that means Farmer John Ham.
- 16:08No canned ham has the appetizing appearance and arresting aroma of a Farmer John Ham.
- 16:13And no other ham of any kind can match its selectively different Western flavor.
- 16:18Farmer John smoked his ham so slowly over native Western woods
- 16:22that the flavor goes deep down, right to the last tender, tasty tidbit on the bone.
- 16:27So look for Farmer John whole ham in their colorful Easter wrapper.
- 16:31Or if you want just a shank or butt, ask your butcher, which are from Farmer John.
- 16:36This Easter, celebrate with a finest, a ham that won the gold medal at the California State Fair.
- 16:41Farmer John Ham, Eastern most in quality and Western most in flavor.
- 16:47An inning in the books, no score in the ballgame.
- 16:50On the message board, happy birthday to Mike Shapiro, chairman of the Al Malika Shrine.
- 16:54And they're having their big night here, August the 16th.
- 16:57So Mike's celebrating a birthday.
- 17:03Claude Osteen loosening up the bill to Bakers.
- 17:05It was a rare day, not only in June, but any month, to see Osteen Bork.
- 17:09He did in the first inning, but he got away with it without being hurt.
- 17:13Now he'll be pitching to Ollie Brown, Al Ferrara, and Chris Canagero.
- 17:29Ollie Brown, right fielder, right hand batter.
- 17:35Outfield plays him to pull, but Brown all spring has been concentrating on going the other way.
- 17:40He takes high ball one.
- 17:43San Diego feels that Brown is on the threshold now, becoming a star.
- 17:48He would appear to have all the two, great arm, fine outfielder, good speed, good hitters.
- 17:54Strings chops it to third.
- 17:56Garvey gloves it, fires across to Bakers, but he out, one away.
- 17:59So Steve Garvey has been busy.
- 18:02He has three assists and he's had four outs in the game.
- 18:05So what are you? Left fielder? Al?
- 18:08Al Ferrara, the left fielder, coming up.
- 18:110 for 3 as a ten-kitter. He gets a chance to start tonight against Osteen.
- 18:16Larry Scarl has done a fine job in left field.
- 18:20And Scarl has had a hot bat hitting 375.
- 18:24But they've put the left-hand hitter down and play Ferrara tonight against Osteen.
- 18:29Flawed into the windup, left-hander ready and delivered.
- 18:33Fastball lifted foul down the right field line and slicing off in the corner and out of play.
- 18:38And the seat's on one to count.
- 18:41Same two ball clubs tomorrow, remember, the Dodgers and the Padres,
- 18:45including game of the series Tom Peebus and Don Sutton.
- 18:49Then during this home stand, the Cubs will be in here Monday and Tuesday night.
- 18:53The Cardinals will be in Wednesday and Thursday night.
- 18:57And next weekend, the Houston Astros.
- 19:00So we have some attractive dates coming up during this first home stand.
- 19:04We sure hope you'll pick out one or two and drop by.
- 19:08Osteen to the windup and the strike one pitch to Ferrara.
- 19:11Off-speed and it's fouled away on a half-swing into the crowd to the right of the plate.
- 19:19Of all the people to almost get a free ball,
- 19:22Harold Parrott of the San Diego Padres and the club box had that thing come right to him.
- 19:26In fact, right by is Black Justices.
- 19:29Oh, and to the count.
- 19:33One out, second inning, no score.
- 19:36Osteen ready and Claude to the windup.
- 19:40And the strike two pitch on the way outside and high.
- 19:42Ball one, one and two.
- 19:44One ball and two strikes to Al Ferrara.
- 19:47Osteen nods yes to Sudsy.
- 19:49Garvey deep and on the line at third and the pitch is high and away.
- 19:53Ball two.
- 19:54Noddy defensively Claude Osteen and Bill Sudeikis.
- 19:57The infield of Wes Parker and Bill Russell.
- 20:00Morrie Wills and Steve Garvey.
- 20:02The outfield, Osteen.
- 20:04And the third pitch is high and away.
- 20:06Osteen to the windup.
- 20:08And the third pitch is high and away.
- 20:10And the fourth pitch is high and away.
- 20:12The outfield, Richie Allen on the left.
- 20:15Willie Davis in center, Manny Moda in right.
- 20:20The question mark of course, although Russell has done a good job at second base,
- 20:24when will Bill Grabarcovich be ready to play?
- 20:27Only questions and no answers.
- 20:29Here's the two-two pitch.
- 20:31Fast ball, hit down the right field line foul and that will peel off into the seat.
- 20:36Still two and two.
- 20:38Grabarcovich came up with a sore throwing arm that has plagued him all spring.
- 20:43He played a little bit here and there.
- 20:46Played briefly against the Giants and then against the Angels
- 20:49and then just couldn't lift the arm.
- 20:51And by last Sunday, there was no way he could play.
- 20:57Two and two, the count to Al Ferraro.
- 21:00Oh, staying ready.
- 21:03And the two-two pitch on the way.
- 21:05Breaking ball fouled off to the left.
- 21:08But still two and two to Al Ferraro.
- 21:11One out in the second inning, no score.
- 21:18It'll be good. You can join the Dodger Pepsi fan club.
- 21:20Six games, a t-shirt, a membership card, all for a dollar.
- 21:24For details, check wherever Pepsi is sold.
- 21:27Here, kids, that's a great club, the Dodger's Pepsi fan club.
- 21:31Two-two pitch on the way is low, ball three.
- 21:43Tomorrow is autograph day at Dodger Stadium, among other things.
- 21:47You folks are our collectors of autographs.
- 21:50Every Sunday when the Dodgers are home, it's your day.
- 21:53Three-two pitch to Ferraro.
- 21:55Popped in the air on the right side, Russell going out,
- 21:58Moda coming in, and Manny has the angle and makes the catch.
- 22:02Two down and Chris Cannazero coming up.
- 22:05Fourteen Dodgers will be signing autographs and special booths
- 22:08throughout the stadium from 11.40 to 12.10 p.m. tomorrow.
- 22:13The Dodgers will be signing tomorrow.
- 22:16Red Adams, Carol Berenger, the coaches, and Jim Brewer, Bill Buckner,
- 22:20Willie Crawford, Willie Davis, Al Downing, Steve Garver,
- 22:24Bill Grabarkewicz, Tom Haller, Charlie Huff, Jim LeFevre,
- 22:28Keith Nicholson, and Joe Moller.
- 22:30That's autograph day.
- 22:32Every Sunday the Dodgers are home, and our first one is tomorrow.
- 22:38Cannazero, right-hand-hitting catcher,
- 22:40waits to the plate and Osteen delivers.
- 22:42High and away, ball one.
- 22:44Cannazero, hitting 167, a veteran receiver.
- 22:50Right-hand batter.
- 22:55Flaud, Nodjia, Sadekis, the 1-0 pitch on the way.
- 22:58Fastball, Goodwin on the corner for a strike.
- 23:01Former left-hand pitcher in his playing days,
- 23:03now working balls and strikes behind the plate, Tom Gorman.
- 23:08Felikoudis, Harvey, and Dale on the baseline.
- 23:15Here's Osteen's 1-1 pitch to Cannazero.
- 23:17Fastball fouled away, second deck off to the right.
- 23:21Juggled up there, 1-2.
- 23:381-2 to count.
- 23:39Osteen ready, delivers.
- 23:41Low and inside, ball two.
- 23:422-2.
- 23:47Osteen now decides to take a little breather
- 23:49so he gets off the mound.
- 23:54Cannazero to batter with Ron Flocum on deck,
- 23:58the young third baseman.
- 24:01Osteen ready, and the 2-2 pitch on the way.
- 24:03Swung on and missed, straight play,
- 24:05and the bottom dropped out of that curveball.
- 24:08So Cannazero strikes out, second strikeout for Osteen.
- 24:11Padres are gone in order, and at the end of an inning and a half, no score.

- 25:08I know you'll have a great time, so please plan to attend.
- 25:17Bottom of the second inning, no score in the ballgame.
- 25:19Bill Sudeikis, Steve Garvey, and Willie Davis in that order against Dave Roberts.
- 25:32Pittsburgh in Atlanta, and that ballgame is now in the bottom of the 10th inning.
- 25:37Wilbur Starjow has hit three home runs in that game.
- 25:40He has done that twice before.
- 25:43Starjow hit his three here, including a double.
- 25:46He almost hit four.
- 25:48The double hit the base of the box seed running in left field.
- 25:51He also hit three 1968 in Chicago.
- 25:54Well, he has three tonight, and they're in the bottom of the 10th in Atlanta,
- 25:58all tied up at 4-4.
- 26:00So if that game keeps going, why, he gets another chance.
- 26:03Sudeikis checks and the pitch is low.
- 26:05Ball one, one and oh.
- 26:07The Cubs leading Houston, one nothing at the end of 6-1 half.
- 26:11Those are the only games in progress besides ours.
- 26:15Sudeikis tries to time a screwball and doesn't get it.
- 26:18It's an account one and one.
- 26:20Sudeikis looking for his first hit of the year.
- 26:22He's 0-4-5.
- 26:28Now the 1-1 pitch on the way.
- 26:30Pass ball low, ball two, two and one.
- 26:42Now the 2-1 pitch coming up.
- 26:44Pass ball low, ball three, three and one.
- 26:49Dodger catcher Tommy Haller has had one at bat a pinch hit base hit.
- 26:55And Duke Sims is four for nine.
- 26:58So the catching staff is well represented.
- 27:003-1 pitch is driven to deep center field.
- 27:04Back goes Gaston.
- 27:05Way back.
- 27:06He's gone.
- 27:08The Cubs lead Houston.
- 27:24Bill Sudeikis gets his first hit of the year, a line drive into the center field.
- 27:29And the Dodgers lead one to nothing.
- 27:32Last night the hardest hit ball he got a hold of was a line drive flagged by Gaston.
- 27:37But this time he hit it where Gaston couldn't catch it unless he bought a ticket.
- 27:41And here is Steve Garvey.
- 27:45Roberts ready and the pitch to Garvey who homered last night high ball one.
- 27:49Two books to be in on AutoScript.
- 27:51We'll go to Bill Sudeikis and two books to the Salvation Army Youth Center.
- 27:5572 West Walnuts in Pasadena.
- 27:58The 1-0 pitch, Garvey hits one foul down the right field.
- 28:01Line out of play.
- 28:02Didn't get a round on it.
- 28:03One and one.
- 28:08One and one to Steve Garvey.
- 28:15Roberts ready and the left-hander delivers.
- 28:17Fast ball and he didn't chase it.
- 28:19He started to swing and held up.
- 28:20Ball two.
- 28:21Two and one.
- 28:34Now the 2-1 pitch coming up.
- 28:35Garvey hits the ground ball to shortstop.
- 28:37Tommy Dean to his right.
- 28:38Up with it.
- 28:39The floor across in time for the out.
- 28:41Let's pause for station identification.
- 28:43This is the Los Angeles Dodgers Radio Network.
- 28:46The good side.
- 28:52KTARC.
- 28:58Willie Davis hitting seventh in the lineup against left-hander Dave Roberts.
- 29:03Canagero talking to the infield about the possibility of a bun.
- 29:09Davis off to a slow start hitting about 188.
- 29:14And Roberts ready to work.
- 29:16One-nothing Dodgers, second inning, home run by Bill Sudeikis.
- 29:20Dave ready and delivers and the fast one is flung on and missed on one.
- 29:24Roberts keeping that ball down.
- 29:33The Vice President and General Manager of the San Diego Padres,
- 29:37Eddie Leishman is here tonight taking in the ball game so they are well represented.
- 29:42The pitch to Davis outside, one and one.
- 29:53Now the one-one pitch on the way, taking low and outside ball two, two and one.
- 30:12Two and one.
- 30:14Roberts comes back.
- 30:15Willie pokes it down the left field line.
- 30:17That's a base hit.
- 30:18Over to cut it off for Ferrara.
- 30:20Willie takes a look.
- 30:21Going for two and a throw not nearly in time.
- 30:32Ferrara as he tried to set himself just inside the left field foul line to throw,
- 30:37it appeared as if his back foot flipped just a dab and it was enough to make the throw go off line.
- 30:44So Willie Davis doubles to left and with one out here is Bill Russell.
- 31:01Russell batting 250.
- 31:04Right hand batting.
- 31:06Roberts checks and delivers.
- 31:07Off speed and pull to the hole.
- 31:09Short knocked down by Dean, that's all he can do with it.
- 31:15Dean tried to short hop and throw and couldn't handle it.
- 31:18He'll get an error.
- 31:19With the ball hit ahead of him, Willie Davis had to hold it second.
- 31:23So still one out, two on and Claude Osteen coming up.
- 31:35That is the second San Diego era.
- 31:37Third baseman Ron Slocum booted one earlier.
- 31:42Two on, one out and here's Osteen.
- 31:44Claude a pretty good hitting pitcher but he's against the left-handers.
- 31:47With Wills coming up next, the Padres feel that Alston wants Osteen to get the bunt down.
- 31:53Moves the men over and then goes for two runs on a base hit.
- 31:56We'll see.
- 31:57Colbert's on the grass, Slocum playing caddy corner.
- 32:00Roberts checks and Osteen is not bunting.
- 32:02He took all the way, low ball one.
- 32:05Now he checks with Ozark to see if the bunt's on or not.
- 32:25Here's the one-hole pitch Osteen.
- 32:26He looks again. This time it's a strike and a count one and one.
- 32:40One and one. Russell away from first. Davis at second.
- 32:44So the Dodgers have two fellows who can fly out there.
- 32:49Osteen waiting. Roberts another look.
- 32:52Dean bird dogging Davis. Osteen around the bunt and tries to and misses.
- 32:56And the count one and two.
- 33:01Slocum retreated to the bag.
- 33:03It was up to Roberts to handle the bunt anywhere from the mound of the third base foul line.
- 33:07And Nate Colbert to do the same on the other side.
- 33:11We'll see what they have Osteen doing now with two strikes.
- 33:19Roberts leaning on his right knee and checking. Now straightens up.
- 33:23Here's the one-two pitch Osteen. Full swing and a miss and down he goes.
- 33:29Second strike out for Roberts.
- 33:31That'll bring up Maury Wills who fouled out to right fielder Holly Brown in the first inning.
- 33:43Preston Gomez up the steps to check the defensive alignment.
- 33:46Now goes back down into the dugout.
- 33:48Two down, one nothing Dodgers.
- 33:50Sadacus hit one in the bleachers and straightaway centers.
- 33:55Roberts delivers off speed and it's grounded foul outside of third on one.
- 34:15All through last year and into the spring of this year there was a great deal of conjecture about the Dodgers going out to find a left-hand starting pitcher.
- 34:24The pitch to Wills, a strike, they throw down to second. Willis going to third to throw.
- 34:29He's in there and Russell goes to second.
- 34:35So on an attempted pickoff play the Dodgers pull a double steal.
- 34:40Willie Davis stealing third and Russell the trailer man easily walked into second.
- 34:49Anyway in the talk about the Dodgers looking for a left-hander you heard a great deal about Dan McGinn of Montreal and a little bit about Dave Roberts of San Diego.
- 35:00After seeing how downing pitch this spring however and also seeing little Bobby O'Brien the talk about left-handers seems to have diminished.
- 35:08Will punches a slow ground ball to Campbell. He's up with it and throws him out and that's that.
- 35:13The Dodgers get a home run, a double, an error and a double steal and get one run, two hits and leave two.
- 35:18And at the end of two Dodgers one, Padres nothing.
- 35:22Hi, I'm home.
- 35:24I'm in here George.
- 35:26Hi, who washed the car? I was going to do it tomorrow.
- 35:30I did, it was such a nice day.
- 35:32Oh, let a woman near a car even to wash it and you've got trouble.
- 35:35No George, I remember to close the windows first.
- 35:38Oh, well that's the spirit.
- 35:39And I use white wall cleaner on the white walls.
- 35:41Well, that's the spirit.
- 35:42And I clean the engine.
- 35:43The engine? Marge, my points, my plug.
- 35:47The carburetor, they add a pollution valve. I cleaned it by filling up with Super 76.
- 35:52Super 76, Union Oil's premium gasoline with five engine cleaners to keep your engine, carburetor and adding pollution valve cleaner.
- 36:03And remember, a clean engine means less pollution too.
- 36:07Super 76, eh? You know Marge, sometimes I think you women know more about the modern automobile than I give you credit for.
- 36:15That's the spirit George.
- 36:16The spirit of 76 lives at Union Oil.
- 36:25Two runnings are in the box, the Dodgers leading the Padres one to nothing, a run, two hits, the Padres no runs, one hit and two errors.
- 36:32From Monday to tomorrow, the same two ball clubs in its autograph day from 1140 to 1210.
- 36:38And then it'll be the Dodgers and the Padres with Don Sutton and Tom Sebers.
- 36:42Sebers of course, formerly with Baltimore.
- 36:45Let's go to the third, one to nothing Dodgers.
- 36:47And for walk, play by play, here's Jerry Doggett.
- 36:49All right Billy, and here's Lawrence Loken, the third baseman, Roberts to follow and then Campbell, one nothing ball game.
- 36:56Now Osteen checking signs, ready to go to work.
- 36:59The wind up in the pitch on the way, fastball is in there for a strike, 0-1.
- 37:04Slokum is a right-hand batter, he's had two at bats so far in the year.
- 37:08Those were in last night's ball game, he replaced Ed Spizio.
- 37:13Strike one.
- 37:16Osteen checking again.
- 37:19Defense plays straight away against Slokum, Roberts is in the on-deck circle.
- 37:23There's a foul back to the wire, strike two, 0-2 to count.
- 37:27The final game of the San Diego series comes up tomorrow, Tom Sebers and Don Sutton.
- 37:32And then the Chicago Cubs and the St. Louis Cardinals come in.
- 37:35The Cubs Monday and Thursday, the Cardinals Wednesday and Thursday, and then Houston over next weekend to wind up the home stand.
- 37:42A lot of big ones for you, good exciting baseball.
- 37:45Here's a foul back into the wire, and it is still strike two.
- 37:50Kenny Holtzman did a pitch Monday and Milt Papas on Tuesday for Chicago.
- 37:55And boy Papas has had a real comeback.
- 38:01Stopping in two.
- 38:05Osteen waiting.
- 38:07Foward delivers, back ball high, one ball, two strikes.
- 38:13The Padres have had only one fly ball so far, fly ball by Ferrara to the right.
- 38:19From the first two innings, Osteen's had them hitting it on the ground again, and that's his pattern when he's on his game.
- 38:25One and two, Foward into the wind-ups, delivers.
- 38:28Stuck him out, turned it over, and he's down on strike.
- 38:32The third strikeout for Osteen.
- 38:35Foward feels that his curveball has much improved that time, though he turned that one over at a change of pace.
- 38:41Kind of a screwball effect of palm ball.
- 38:45Here's Dave Roberts, the pitcher, coming up.
- 38:50Roberts walking slowly toward home plate.
- 38:53Curls from the left side, backs from the left side.
- 38:56Roberts in there with one out in the third inning.
- 38:59The Padres move to San Diego from Los Angeles.
- 39:01They will help the Giants open the home season on Monday at Candlestick Park, which is being rebuilt.
- 39:09There's a swing and a foul, tip-straight back, strike one.
- 39:13Candlestick is in the process of being completely enclosed all the way around since the 49ers will now share the park with the Giants.
- 39:23Nothing in one to count.
- 39:25Roberts waits.
- 39:26Osteen pitches a swing and a high pop foul off third.
- 39:28That'll carry out a play.
- 39:30In the seats behind the Dodger dugouts, strike two.
- 39:46Nothing in two to count the pitcher, Dave Roberts.
- 39:54Osteen ready again.
- 39:57Into the windup, little low, one ball and two strikes.
- 40:06Claude has been ahead of most of the hitters tonight.
- 40:09He's ahead of Roberts now, one and two.
- 40:13Lions deliver.
- 40:15Just a little low ball, too, two-two counts.
- 40:18Tadejka's catching, Osteen pitching. Parker Russell will, Garvey the infield, Allen Davis-Mota in the outfield.
- 40:29Two-two count.
- 40:33Now Osteen ready again, deals it off.
- 40:35A swing and a pop-up on the third base line foul, play-out ball.
- 40:38Garvey near the coaching line, makes the catch, and that's poor Wyatt.
- 40:44So two up and two down, and Dave Campbell the batter.
- 40:47Campbell has the only hit allowed by Osteen.
- 40:51Ward has 27 lifetime shutouts before this year and one already this year for a total of 28.
- 40:57He's high on the list of active pitchers with shutouts.
- 41:00Marisol is the leader, 46.
- 41:03Gibson has 45.
- 41:09Two outs, nobody on base. Osteen ready to pitch to Campbell.
- 41:13Bounced it and it's ball one.
- 41:16Campbell off to a good start. He has six hits and a.353 batting average for the spring.
- 41:29One ball and no strikes.
- 41:32Osteen to the windup again. High ball, too. Two and nothing.
- 41:37The Dodgers are off to a bit of a slow start with a bat.
- 41:39They hit 270 as a team last year.
- 41:41They're hitting 214 now. The Padres are at 231.
- 41:47The Dodger pitchers have held the opposition to a combined batting average of 190, though.
- 41:53Here's the 2-0 pitch.
- 41:55Strikes, two and one.
- 41:58For the series at San Francisco coming up next week, it'll mean that the Padres and the Giants will have reeled off six games in the first 10 days of the season.
- 42:10Here's the 2-1 pitch.
- 42:12Swung on a driven foul down the left field corner and it's a 2-2 count.
- 42:17The Giants opened up San Diego Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, and now the Padres come here for free.
- 42:28They go to San Francisco for free.
- 42:35So they're getting off to an early start against their other California ball club.
- 42:40Now the 2-2 pitch.
- 42:42Struck him out, and again he turned it over with an off-three pitch.
- 42:45Four strikeouts for Osteen. Oh boy, that's a big pitch for him.
- 42:49The Dodgers retired, and they're all out in the third, and the score at the end of two and a half innings, the Dodgers one and the Padres nothing.
- 42:56Shritz, Milwaukee, and the World.
- 43:03At 18, I first put out the seed. By 19, I'd sailed around the world.
- 43:09And now, well, let's just say I've seen and done a lot.
- 43:14Enough for a lifetime? I doubt it.
- 43:20But there's always one more port ahead, so I keep going.
- 43:28I figure you only get one chance at life. Below it, you might as well quit.
- 43:33Oh, someday I'll go home. But right now, I'll take home where I find it.
- 43:38And I find it. Where I can order a Schlitz in seven different languages.
- 43:43And if that doesn't make you feel at home, I don't know what does.
- 43:46It seems that Schlitz is always one port ahead of me, which is okay by me.
- 43:52Why settle for less? You're out of Schlitz. You're out of the game.
- 44:02Tomorrow night's your deadline if you want to order tickets for next Sunday afternoon with the Astros.
- 44:06Get two tickets for the price of one.
- 44:08You'll find two-for-one blanks in both the Riverside Quest Enterprise and the South Bay Daily Breeze.
- 44:13All requests must be mailed by midnight tomorrow.
- 44:17Send them to the Dodgers, Box 100, Los Angeles 90051.
- 44:21That's next Sunday, two-for-one day.
- 44:25Here's Manny Motard-Batt batting second in the order, safe on an arrow, first time up.
- 44:31Manny so far, three for twelve.
- 44:35Here's the wind by Roberts, the pitch on the way to Manny, half-swing, and he couldn't hold up.
- 44:40Strike one. Tom Gorman is deployed on fire.
- 44:43Pellacudas, Harvey, and Vail working the base pass.
- 44:47On deck, Parker, then Allen. Dave Roberts ready in the pitch.
- 44:51Off-speed outside. One ball, one strike.
- 45:00One-on-one to Manny Motard.
- 45:02Roberts deals again. Curveball bounce right back to the pitcher.
- 45:06Roberts goes to first. Motard is out one away.
- 45:09That'll bring up Wes Parker, on on the fourth play, first time up.
- 45:13Wes Parker on the scoreboard. They're in the 12th inning now at Atlanta.
- 45:18Pittsburgh and Atlanta all tied up. 4-4.
- 45:21The game became tied on the homerun by Aaron in the ninth inning, one on.
- 45:25Sharjah was knocking all the runs for Pittsburgh with three home runs, one coming with a man on.
- 45:30Parker takes it low, ball one.
- 45:32Chicago leading Houston 1-0 in the ninth inning at Houston.
- 45:36Jenkins against Guertzer, relieved by Culver in the ninth inning.
- 45:41Now the 1-0 fit. Off-speed low, ball two to nothing.
- 45:45The Mets beat Cincinnati 3-0 today in 11 innings.
- 45:49The Reds now have lost three straights. Pacella over Granger, both in relief.
- 45:53The Giants beat the Cardinals 6-4, three birdie over Royce.
- 45:58And Mays had another homerun. He's had four home runs and four games and he now has 632 lifetimes.
- 46:04Philadelphia, in their home opener in their new ballpark, Veterans Stadium, beats Montreal 4-1.
- 46:10The Angels lost to Milwaukee in Milwaukee's home opener, 4-3.
- 46:14Wright the loser, Lopez the winner.
- 46:162-1 pitch, Lyon back to second base, 2-0 to base up to Parker.
- 46:21So Parker, Lyon's won the center.
- 46:24Lutz has been hitting the ball crisply in all of the games this year, but he hasn't had too much luck.
- 46:28And now he picks up his fourth hit. Here's Ricky Allen, struck out his first time up.
- 46:33Other American League scores. Minnesota beats Chicago 5-3.
- 46:38Chicago 5-3. Baltimore over Detroit 2-1. New York beat Washington 6-0.
- 46:44Cleveland over Boston 11-10. And Oakland beats Kansas City 5-4.
- 46:52All right, Allen waiting. One out, one on. Roberts delivers.
- 46:57Pops a foul off first base. Colbert's giving it a chase near the dugout. It's going to be out of play.
- 47:02Strike one to Ricky Allen. Richards had one hit and 10 at bat.
- 47:18Allen waiting. Parker on first. Dodgers lead on the homerun by Bill Sudeikis opening up the second inning.
- 47:24The bottom of the second. Allen swings at a curve. Strike two. Foul tipped it away.
- 47:37Last half of the third inning. The Dodgers and the Padres.
- 47:45Now Roberts checks again. Off-speed hits the third. Up with a stroke and down to second one.
- 47:52On to first base at the double play. Allen hit the ball hard but right to the third baseman and they get the double play.
- 47:57He's staggered, spoken with the ball. No runs, one hit, none left on. And the score at the end of three innings of play.
- 48:04Dodgers one and the Padres nothing. You know if someone kept scoring the number of hot dogs.
- 48:34That's what it's all about.
- 48:38And you've got to mind the people who like helping other people and you haven't any other way.
- 49:08Claude Osteen warming up now. We've played three innings. The Dodgers one run and three hits. The Padres no runs, one hit.
- 49:15Let's go back to more play here Tony.
- 49:17All right Jerry. The run, the homerun by Bill Sudeikis and Claude Osteen trying to make it stand up.
- 49:23He'll be working to Tommy Dean followed by Clarence Gaston and then Nate Colbert.
- 49:34Tommy Dean struck out in the first inning. He's 0 for 1.
- 49:39Osteen has allowed one hit. Single assented by Dave Campbell leading off.
- 49:46Claude nods yes into the windup and delivers and the first one is low and away ball one.
- 50:03One and O. The next one high and outside. Boyle 2, 2 and O.
- 50:11Tommy Dean right hand hitting shortstop. Struck out in the first inning. Tom weaned in the Dodger organization.
- 50:19Drafted by San Diego.
- 50:23Two old pitch on the way. Fastball hit off the end of the stick foul and rolling over towards the Padres dugout. 2 and 1.
- 50:36You know on June the 6th there'll be quite a ballgame here at Dodger Stadium. Old timers game. The Stars of the 50s against the Stars of the 60s.
- 50:45And Don Newcomb announced today that he would be delighted to participate in that old timers game.
- 50:51Chopper back a long first base picked up by Sudeikis as it throws to first to the outs.
- 50:56It ball that back spin on it. It looked like it was going out towards Osteen and it came back in full studgy but he stayed with it and got his man.
- 51:05One away and Clarence gas in the batter.
- 51:08Anyway after Don Newcomb announced that he was going to pitch in the old timers game.
- 51:14Dodgers did a little research and we find out that Don Newcomb was the winning pitcher in the game that recorded Waldo Alston's first victory as a manager of the Dodgers.
- 51:29And that would be April the 14th, 1954.
- 51:35High bounce over the mound near the back comes Wills in a hurry. Picks it up and gets him. Oh what a play.
- 51:42Maury Wills makes a fine play to nip the speedy Clarence Gaston. And with two down Nate Colbert coming up.
- 51:58The lead off batter in Alston's first victory as pilot of the Dodgers in 54 was Jim Gilliam.
- 52:04And he had a home run that day. And I guess it figured that Waldo Alston would be the number one manager in Dodger history.
- 52:11His first victory as a manager was against the Giants.
- 52:16Colbert takes a strike on one.
- 52:22The Dodgers had lost their 1954 season opener to the Giants and a kid by the name of Willie Mays had hit a home run.
- 52:30Pitch outside ball two.
- 52:32A lot has changed in 18 years. But Waldo is still managing and Willie is still hitting him. He hit number four today.
- 52:50The 2-0 pitch down and away. Ball three. 3-0.
- 53:03Nate Colbert, big first baseman waiting at the plate. Two down, fourth inning. Dodgers one, Padres nothing.
- 53:11Posteen delivers and it's swung on and missed. Strike two.
- 53:15I think it felt a little twinge in the right side. Backed out for a moment.
- 53:27Fod working on the ball, trying to rub a wrinkle in it.
- 53:37Posteen up on top. Nate Colbert waiting.
- 53:45Fod nods yes into the windup and the 2-2 pitch is a breaking ball, low ball three. On deck, Olly Brown.
- 54:14Here's Osteen's 3-2 pitch on the way. Low and inside, ball four. Rolls behind Sudeikis. Colbert trots the first.
- 54:22So a two-out walk to Nate Colbert and Olly Brown coming up.
- 54:27You can well understand Osteen kind of pitching around Nate Colbert.
- 54:32Anybody who hit seven home runs against the Dodgers last year commands a great deal of respect.
- 54:40Colbert did just that. Here's Olly Brown. He tapped the third in the second inning, 0-4-1.
- 54:50Dodgers one, Padres nothing here in the fourth inning.
- 54:53Second game of the three-game series. They'll be after each other at 1 o'clock tomorrow.
- 54:57Pitch high, ball one. That's Don Sutton and Tom Fevers.
- 55:01Then during the week at night, the Cubs will be here Monday and Tuesday, the Cardinals Wednesday and Thursday,
- 55:08and the Astros Friday, Saturday and Sunday. We sure hope you'll be out here with us.
- 55:13The 1-0 pitch on the way. A little high, ball two, 2-0.
- 55:38Osteen backed off now just as quickly as up on top of the mound again.
- 55:43Colbert held on by Parker, cautious lead. It's a tough game.
- 55:46Dodgers one run, three hits. Padres no runs, one hit. Four in the inning.
- 55:51Osteen's pitch to strike gets the outside corner, two and one.
- 55:54On deck, left fielder Al Ferrara.
- 55:59Dodgers in the second inning had Sudeikis lead off with a home run.
- 56:03One out later, Davis doubled and Russell was aboard on an error.
- 56:07Osteen tried to bunt them over, couldn't do it, and struck out, and they negotiated the double steal successfully.
- 56:12But then Maury Wills rolled out.
- 56:16The 2-1 pitch, Dolly Brown filed away.
- 56:19So as far as the Dodgers were concerned in the second inning, it was much to do about one.
- 56:24They had one run, two hits. There was an error on a double steal and two left.
- 56:30One to nothing Dodgers, fourth inning.
- 56:46Osteen has struck out four.
- 56:50He has walked one and committed a board.
- 56:53Looks at Colbert, works the plate in the dirt. Short hopped nicely by Sudeikis, ball three.
- 57:00San Diego was a very good hitting ball club and a lot of socks.
- 57:06They really got some power.
- 57:08And the pitcher finds himself pitching very carefully to Gaston, Colbert, and Brown.
- 57:14And of course tonight you have Al Ferrara in there and he provides some punch.
- 57:21Osteen ready, Colbert ready to go, and so Claude goes over there with the throw.
- 57:25And that time he stepped properly towards first.
- 57:28Chris Pellikoudis called a balk on him earlier and he has his eye on him.
- 57:38Three and two to count.
- 57:42Osteen ready and delivers with a run-and-gone line drive at will.
- 57:48So Olly Brown rips one, but right at more he wills.
- 57:51No runs, no hits, a man left.
- 57:53At the end of three and a half, the score, the Dodgers won and the Padres nothing.
- 57:58Last year the burglars in this nation took $680 million worth of your property.
- 58:03In Phoenix approximately 14,000 burglaries cost you, the taxpayer, over $4 million.
- 58:10Would you call Crimestop at 26-26-151 for $70?
- 58:15That's about what it cost each man, woman, and child for burglary in Phoenix last year.
- 58:20I'm Sergeant Larry Gallup urging you to make use of your Crimestop program.
- 58:24When you see anything of a suspicious nature, call 26-26-151.
- 58:29Officers are on duty around the clock to help you help yourself.
- 58:33Remember, if we are going to overcome the threat of crime in Phoenix,
- 58:37all of us, you and I, are going to have to become involved.
- 58:41When you call 26-26-151, you don't have to give your name.
- 58:46Your call is proof of your interest in your community.
- 58:49Remember, Crimestop, 26-26-151.
- 58:54The applause in the background directed to the man about whom we were just talking, Mr. Don Newcomb, who picked up the first victory for Walter Austin April of 1954, a mere 18 years ago.
- 59:16Let's pause for station identification. This is the Los Angeles Dahlia Radio Network.
- 59:20The Spade Squad, K-P-A-R-E.
- 59:31Bottom of the fourth inning, Dodgers leading the Padres 1-0, and the man who gave them the lead is at the plate, Bill Sudeikis.
- 59:42Off-speed pitch is swung on and fouled, 0-1.
- 59:45Sudeikis at a low line drive that cleared the wall at the 400-foot sign into the bleachers, just to the left of straightaway centers.
- 59:55Sudeikis' first home run of the year, 0-1 to count.
- 1:00:01Strike one pitch on the way. Screwball over, strike two.
- 1:00:05Final score in 12 innings, Atlanta 5, Star Joe Ford.
- 1:00:11Atlanta 5 runs 11 hits, one error.
- 1:00:15Wilbur Star Joe drove in all four runs for Pittsburgh with three home runs, but his one-man performance wasn't enough.
- 1:00:22Next one to Sudsy outside, ball one.
- 1:00:25The winning pitcher, Cecil Upshaw.
- 1:00:27The losing pitcher, Nellie Brials.
- 1:00:30So the Braves have won three out of four.
- 1:00:32The Giants have won three out of four.
- 1:00:36Pitch to Sudeikis' low, ball two.
- 1:00:46Two and two to Bill Sudeikis.
- 1:00:49On deck, Steve Garvey.
- 1:00:51Fourth inning, one-nothing Dodger.
- 1:00:53Roberts ready and delivers, and it's a slowly hit ball up long third and foul.
- 1:00:57Roberts' really down effort is already outside the coaching box.
- 1:01:01He's got to pick it up, two and two.
- 1:01:14Two balls and two strikes to Bill Sudeikis.
- 1:01:18Visiting for a moment with Tommy Gorman.
- 1:01:22National League West hasn't really been shaken down yet, once around the league for everybody,
- 1:01:28everyone is convinced it's going to be a really wild affair this year.
- 1:01:32The pitch, low, ball three.
- 1:01:34The Cincinnati Reds, and for that matter no one in the West is going to be able to run away.
- 1:01:38And one of the reasons that no team is going to run away is the San Diego Padres.
- 1:01:43Three, two, pitch, long on and fouled off.
- 1:01:46The Padres figure to beat every club in the Western Division and beat them quite often.
- 1:01:51They're not going to be a patchy to anybody.
- 1:01:54Just the fact that they have improved so much means a greater year for the National League West.
- 1:02:00Last year Cincinnati took off and we never heard from again,
- 1:02:03but it doesn't figure that could possibly happen again this year.
- 1:02:06Here's the three, two, pitch, hop foul to the right of the plate.
- 1:02:10Cannazero running out of room, but he's right at the railing of the seat,
- 1:02:13gets his mitt on it, can't hold it, then bangs into the railing and rolls over on his side.
- 1:02:19Chris, I think, didn't realize that he was running out of room so quickly.
- 1:02:24However, it's padded and although he suffered the concussion of hitting it, he's okay.
- 1:02:30Chris Cannazero running into the wire, the padded part of it,
- 1:02:44in front of the dugout seat to the right of home plate.
- 1:02:46Anytime you have that kind of a play here at Dodger Stadium, it doesn't come up that often,
- 1:02:50but when it does, most folks, I think, harken back to Earl Batty,
- 1:02:56the catcher of the Minnesota Twins in the 1965 World Series,
- 1:03:00when Batty hit that padding straight on and he was straight up, so it struck him around the throat.
- 1:03:06Today he just fouls another pitch away and it's still three and two.
- 1:03:09Earl, a Los Angeles boy, and he shook himself and a lot of his friends up when he hit that thing.
- 1:03:15Unfortunately, he was okay.
- 1:03:18Three and two to count to Bill Sudeikis.
- 1:03:25Roberts ready and delivers.
- 1:03:27Sudsy swings, fouls it back out of play.
- 1:03:34He's getting a lot of off-speed pitches.
- 1:03:36He'll have to supply the power himself.
- 1:03:39Screwball, slow curve, and it's still three and two.
- 1:03:50Dodgers one, Padres nothing, fourth inning.
- 1:03:53Tough game.
- 1:03:57Dave checking without a windup.
- 1:03:59Three-two pitch, fouled away again.
- 1:04:03That goes upstairs above the press box and falls down below, much to the delight of the crowd.
- 1:04:08Ladies night here at Dodger Stadium.
- 1:04:12Every Saturday night when the Dodgers are home, ladies night.
- 1:04:16Sunday, autograph day.
- 1:04:22Here's a three-two pitch to Bill Sudeikis.
- 1:04:24Breaking ball is low. Billy has won the battle.
- 1:04:27He cops the first.
- 1:04:35Third baseman Steve Garvey coming up.
- 1:04:37He grounded a short in the second inning.
- 1:04:43The Dodgers are in their fifth game.
- 1:04:45They have had four home runs.
- 1:04:50They get three home runs.
- 1:04:52One by Buckner, one by Garvey, and the one tonight by Bill Sudeikis.
- 1:04:57Garvey takes the strike on one.
- 1:05:040-1 to Steve.
- 1:05:11Sudeikis held on by Nate Colbert.
- 1:05:13The pitch of the plate is pulled sharply foul outside of third.
- 1:05:17Roberts tried to fastball him, but Garvey is one of those kids with a very quick bat.
- 1:05:230-1 to...
- 1:05:36...the crowd reacting to a scramble for the foul.
- 1:05:38Here's the strike two pitch.
- 1:05:40Scubal lifted to right center field.
- 1:05:42Moving over is Ollie Brown.
- 1:05:44He's there to make the catch.
- 1:05:46And getting back to first base is Bill Sudeikis.
- 1:05:50A one away in the bat of Willie Davis.
- 1:06:05Willie Davis lined a double to left.
- 1:06:08He comes up now with a runner at first and one out.
- 1:06:10Fourth inning, one-nothing Dodgers.
- 1:06:13Dave Roberts and Claude Osteen tonight.
- 1:06:15Tom Sebus and Don Sutton tomorrow.
- 1:06:19Pitch outside, looks like a slider.
- 1:06:21One ball, no strikes.
- 1:06:23Little flat curve.
- 1:06:291-0 to Will.
- 1:06:36They're not holding Sudeikis.
- 1:06:37Roberts delivers fastball.
- 1:06:38Hit down to shortstop.
- 1:06:40Over to second for one.
- 1:06:41Back to first.
- 1:06:43Double play.
- 1:06:45So the double play, 6-4-3.
- 1:06:48No runs, no hits.
- 1:06:49Nobody left.
- 1:06:50Second San Diego double play.
- 1:06:52And at the end of four, Dodgers one, Padres nothing.
- 1:07:01Marge, I'm home.
- 1:07:03I'm in here, George.
- 1:07:05Hi.
- 1:07:06Who washed the car?
- 1:07:07I was going to do it tomorrow.
- 1:07:09I did.
- 1:07:10It was such a nice day.
- 1:07:11Oh.
- 1:07:12Let a woman near a car even to wash it and you've got trouble.
- 1:07:14No, George.
- 1:07:15I remembered to close the windows first.
- 1:07:17Oh, well that's the spirit.
- 1:07:18And I used white wall cleaner on the white walls.
- 1:07:20Well, that's the spirit.
- 1:07:21And I cleaned the engine.
- 1:07:22The engine?
- 1:07:23Marge, my points, my plugs.
- 1:07:26The carburetor, the anti-pollution valve.
- 1:07:28I cleaned it by filling up with Super 76.
- 1:07:34Super 76.
- 1:07:35New in oil, premium gasoline with five engine cleaners.
- 1:07:38To keep your engine, carburetor, and anti-pollution valve clean.
- 1:07:42And remember, a clean engine means less pollution too.
- 1:07:46Super 76, eh?
- 1:07:48You know, Marge, sometimes I think you women know more about the modern automobile than I give you credit for.
- 1:07:53That's the spirit, George.
- 1:07:55The spirit of 76 with the New York.
- 1:08:04Through four innings, one to nothing in favor of the Dodgers.
- 1:08:07A run, three hits.
- 1:08:08The Padres no runs, one hit and two errors.
- 1:08:12Willie Davis hitting into a double play is more than just an ordinary happenstance in a ballgame.
- 1:08:18Willie hit into only six last year, and he was that bad 593 times.
- 1:08:24That averages out to hitting into a double play once every 98 times.
- 1:08:30Willie Davis was second in the league as far as tough as to double up.
- 1:08:35So in a ballgame, the marks Willie Davis hitting into a double play, why, it deserves a little asterisk next to it.
- 1:08:41The toughest man in the National League to double up last year.
- 1:08:45His best average or best rate would be Bobby Bonds of the Giants, a pitcher for our low ball ones.
- 1:08:52The top ten in order, Bonds, Davis, Rose, Campbell of San Diego, Stobb, Alou, Alley, Menke, Doyle, and Boa of Philadelphia.
- 1:09:07The pitch to Ferrara outside, 2-0.
- 1:09:12What they do is they take the number of times at bat, divide into that the number of double plays, and they figure out the D.P. rate.
- 1:09:23And Bonds, the toughest of all, with Willie Davis second.
- 1:09:27What makes it surprising, of course, for Bonds, he's a right-handed batter.
- 1:09:32The pitch to Ferrara inside, ball three.
- 1:09:383-0 to Al Ferrara.
- 1:09:51Osteen ready, 3-0 pitch over first strike, 3-1.
- 1:09:57Osteen has pitched extremely careful to the power hitters in the San Diego lineup.
- 1:10:03He walked Colbert once.
- 1:10:05Brown almost flipped the hands off Will.
- 1:10:08But he has been trying very carefully to pitch.
- 1:10:10In fact, he just soon walked him, I think, rather than give them the pitch they're looking for.
- 1:10:15Ferrara tired of waiting backs out.
- 1:10:191-0 Dodgers, fifth inning.
- 1:10:293-1 pitch coming up, outside, ball four.
- 1:10:32So Ferrara draws the walk.
- 1:10:38In talking about the top ten, the top ten control pitchers in the National League last year,
- 1:10:44the stingiest as far as giving up walks, Wad Osteen was third in the league.
- 1:10:50He averaged 1.8 walks per game.
- 1:10:55And the toughest man in that department was Ferguson Jenkins of the Cubs,
- 1:10:59followed by Juan Marichal, very closely followed by Marichal.
- 1:11:05In fact, we'll give you the top ten as far as control is concerned.
- 1:11:10We'll give you the statistics figure with your impressions.
- 1:11:14Here's Kanagero, right hand hitting catcher, Osteen to first base, no play.
- 1:11:19Jenkins, Marichal, and Osteen.
- 1:11:21Then McAndrew of the Mets, Merritt, and Dave Roberts, whom we're looking at tonight,
- 1:11:26followed by Pappas, Stone, Perry, and Bunning.
- 1:11:32The pitch over for a strike, 4-1.
- 1:11:41The ball's one strike.
- 1:11:55Claude Dewistretch, set at the belt, looks at first and delivers the ground ball,
- 1:11:59down to Russell, he feeds Wells, he fires to Parker, double play.
- 1:12:112-4, 6-3, so two down, third double play in the game, and Ron Slocum coming up.
- 1:12:40Ron Slocum backs out for a moment, one to nothing Dodgers, a run three hits.
- 1:12:45San Diego no runs, one hit and two errors.
- 1:12:55Sudeikis in a crowd, Osteen gives him a reading.
- 1:12:58Now Claude Ruddy and the pitch to Slocum, fastball tapper back over the mound,
- 1:13:03Wells charging, scoops it, throws, gets him.
- 1:13:09Another nice play by Wells, no runs, no hits, nobody left.
- 1:13:13At the end of four and a half innings, Dodgers one, Padres nothing.
- 1:13:17Flips, Milwaukee and the world.
- 1:13:30When you get caught in the eye of a Northeasterner, it can be a pretty hairy thing.
- 1:13:34Wings whip up to 130 miles an hour and can crack open the hull of a ship like an egg.
- 1:13:40On the waves, the waves are the worst.
- 1:13:42They wash over the deck and can sweep everything overboard that isn't backing down.
- 1:13:47They throw to you, but the work goes on.
- 1:13:50If you happen to be caught topside, you look alright, but survive it.
- 1:13:54So you put on your life jacket and hang on and sweat it out till the storm blows over.
- 1:14:00Then you celebrate with a slick.
- 1:14:03Licks and wipes are one kind thing.
- 1:14:05Nobody gets a second chance.
- 1:14:07So you'll live it with all the gusto you can, right down to the beer you drink.
- 1:14:12Why settle for less?
- 1:14:14When you're out of slicks, you're out of beer.
- 1:14:31As we go to the bottom of the fifth, the Dodgers leading 1-0, a final score from within the dome in Texas.
- 1:14:38The Cubs leading 1-0 going into the bottom of the ninth inning and Houston scored twice and beat the Cubs 2-1.
- 1:14:46The winning pitcher, George Culber.
- 1:14:48The losing pitcher, Ferguson Jenkins.
- 1:14:50So Jenkins has had two decisions this year.
- 1:14:53He beat Gibson 2-1 on the tenth inning home run and he loses 2-1 on the ninth inning uprising.
- 1:14:59What a year he's starting off to have.
- 1:15:01Bill Russell is the batter and takes low, ball one, 1-0.
- 1:15:11Russell a board on the other in the second inning.
- 1:15:13Tommy Dean unable to handle his ground ball.
- 1:15:17Hostin to follow and then Wills.
- 1:15:19Now the 1-0 pitch, screwball over for a strike, 1-1.
- 1:15:29We told you before about the ten toughest men in the league to double up.
- 1:15:33Pitch swung on and missed strike two.
- 1:15:35We also talked about the ten pitchers that had the best control and Roberts is one of them.
- 1:15:41Last year he would finish in the number six spot, the sixth toughest control pitcher in the league.
- 1:15:48Dave's 1-2 pitch to Russell.
- 1:15:50Screwball grounded up along third at the bag.
- 1:15:52A long throw for Slocum.
- 1:15:54He's got a gun but it's too late.
- 1:16:00Ron Slocum throwing from on the line and back of the bag and Russell beats it out.
- 1:16:05And the battle will be quadro scene.
- 1:16:08You might also wonder about the ten toughest fellows as far as striking out is concerned.
- 1:16:14The ten toughest to fan.
- 1:16:18The toughest man in the league and I guess you would agree.
- 1:16:24That would be Matty Allou now with the Cardinals.
- 1:16:27You'll see Matty here Wednesday and Thursday night.
- 1:16:30Hostin is bunting. He gets it down.
- 1:16:32Roberts feels it and the play is the first base to Campbell covering.
- 1:16:36So the sacrifice works.
- 1:16:40So Matty Allou is the toughest man in the league to strike out.
- 1:16:43He struck out about once every 40 times.
- 1:16:47Then his brother Jesus is second in the league.
- 1:16:51Followed by Glenn Beckard and you'll see Beckard here Monday night with the Cubs.
- 1:16:55Then Felix Mian, Tommy Helms, Gary Sutherland of Montreal, Al Oliver of Pittsburgh,
- 1:17:03Maury Wills of the Dodgers who is at the plate now.
- 1:17:07Last year, struck out about once every 17 times.
- 1:17:12So he was the eighth toughest batter in the league to strike out.
- 1:17:16Ron Hunt and Art Chansky rounded out the ten.
- 1:17:21So Wills up there now with Russell at second and one out.
- 1:17:24And Roberts delivers breaking ball low.
- 1:17:26Ball one, one and all.
- 1:17:36One and all to count, Maury Wills.
- 1:17:40Roberts ready, Dave delivers.
- 1:17:42Wills hits a chopper to third, speared by Slocum, holds Russell and throws Wills out.
- 1:17:50Manny Modo will be coming up, two out of man at second, one to nothing Dodgers.
- 1:17:55Modo aboard on the error and hit back to the box, 0-2.
- 1:18:00On deck, Wes Parker.
- 1:18:19Modo at the plate.
- 1:18:21Roberts looks in to get a sign.
- 1:18:22Now Dave sets up the belt and delivers.
- 1:18:24Manny takes a look at the strike, going one.
- 1:18:28Roberts last year against the Dodgers had an earned run average of 2.4.
- 1:18:38Breaking ball over for another strike, 0-2.
- 1:18:41So he is just as tough tonight as he was all last year against the Dodgers.
- 1:18:46The difference, the Dodgers and Osteen are leading by the slim one to nothing margin,
- 1:18:50home run by Bill Sudeikis in the second inning.
- 1:18:53Strike two pitch to Modo, Roberts ready and Dave delivers.
- 1:18:58Bouncer foul outside of first and down the line, still 0-2.
- 1:19:140-2 to Manny Modo.
- 1:19:24Now the strike two pitch to Manny, folks foul down the right field line out of play.
- 1:19:29Looks like a screwball, so it's still 0-2.
- 1:19:49No ball, two strikes.
- 1:19:53The strike two pitch, a breaking ball fouled away into the crowd back of the dugout of the Padres.
- 1:19:58That's still 0-2.
- 1:20:16Roberts ready and the strike two pitch is outside, count of zero on his knees to come up with it.
- 1:20:32Two out, fifth inning, one nothing Dodgers.
- 1:20:34Russell taking the lead to second base.
- 1:20:36Roberts at the belt.
- 1:20:38Dave delivers and it's a great foul again outside of first.
- 1:20:42Right into a photographer's well, one and two.
- 1:20:49Tomorrow San Diego, Tom Phoebus who used to draw Baltimore Oriole checks will work for San Diego against Don Sutton.
- 1:20:58Then Leo's boys will be here starting Monday night for two.
- 1:21:05Here's the one-two pitch to Manny Modo.
- 1:21:08Roberts ready, delivers and it's hit up the middle over second into center field and Russell will score and the Dodgers lead two to nothing.
- 1:21:26So Manny Modo rolls one up the middle to pick up an RBI.
- 1:21:31It shows you the tough things about this game of baseball.
- 1:21:35Roberts is picking up Dandy but that extra run really scrambles out of it and the run was not of his doing.
- 1:21:43Had his regular third baseman handled the ground ball he might have been out of the inning.
- 1:21:47One, two, three.
- 1:21:50Instead, Slocum playing for Speezy-O made a late throw on Russell's ball.
- 1:21:55Then a sacrifice, the infield out on a base hit and the Dodgers have a run.
- 1:22:00Parker hits one off the glove of Roberts.
- 1:22:02He runs after it, picks it up, throws to eight.
- 1:22:12And the guy who was pressing so much he could open up a score, Richie Allen coming up to the plate.
- 1:22:22In a sense it is a tribute to the city and the area of Southern California.
- 1:22:27How badly Richie Allen wants to do something good for the folks.
- 1:22:32He is straining and for a fellow who has been in the big leagues as long as he has been, it is kind of amazing.
- 1:22:38You would expect him to just take it easy and wait for him to fall in but he has really been trying.
- 1:22:43The pitch to Allen in the dirt, ball one.
- 1:22:46In fact he struck out in the first inning on a pitch in the dirt and then last time up in the third hit into a double play.
- 1:22:53And all of his teammates doing the same thing.
- 1:22:56Take it easy.
- 1:22:59Well he is up there again with two out and two on.
- 1:23:02Two-nothing Dodgers in the fifth.
- 1:23:04Roberts ready and Dave delivers.
- 1:23:06And Richie hits a shot, one-handed on one hop by Fulcom for the fourth and he is slowly coming out of it.
- 1:23:13Ron Fulcom making a fine play to stay with that thing.
- 1:23:18And Allen really strung that ball.
- 1:23:20He will hit a few more harder and farther too.
- 1:23:23One run, three hits, two left and at the end of five Dodgers two, Padres nothing.
- 1:23:29When you think about it there are many meats that start at three different positions in your family meal planning.
- 1:23:34One is Farmer John Sausage.
- 1:23:36It is equally enjoyable for breakfast, lunch and supper.
- 1:23:39I think you will agree that Farmer John Sausage is different from any you have tried.
- 1:23:44As a starter it is strictly fresh and the fresher the sausage is the better it is.
- 1:23:48Unlike most bankers Farmer John makes his sausage from fresh eastern corn-fed pork brought out here live.
- 1:23:54And U.S. inspected and dress fresh right here in the West.
- 1:23:58And Farmer John Sausage is so lean and meaty you can hardly believe it.
- 1:24:02Farmer John makes his sausage with all the best meat, not just the trimmings.
- 1:24:06And then he seasons it to an old-time Western recipe.
- 1:24:10So there is a delicious Western flavor in every marvelous meaty morsel.
- 1:24:14Enjoy Farmer John Sausage often for breakfast, lunch and supper.
- 1:24:19And you will see why it won the gold medal at the California State Fair.
- 1:24:24It is the eastern most in quality and the western most in flavors.
- 1:24:29Don't forget tomorrow is Autograph Day at Dodger Stadium.
- 1:24:40Every Sunday will be Autograph Day when the Dodgers are at home.
- 1:24:44Booths throughout the stadium, conveniently located, will be hosted by Dodger players from 11.40 to 12.10 while the visiting team is holding batting practice.
- 1:24:52And your youngster can fill his album with autographs.
- 1:24:54We'll get early and ask the usher for the location of the nearest autograph booth.
- 1:24:58That's tomorrow and every Sunday.
- 1:25:00Alright, back to play. Here's Vint.
- 1:25:02Alright Jerry, two to nothing in favor of the Dodgers.
- 1:25:05Dave Roberts followed by Dave Campbell and then Tommy Dean.
- 1:25:10Roberts, as we mentioned at the start of the ballgame, is a good hitting pitcher.
- 1:25:14He had two home runs last year.
- 1:25:16I think he had about a half a dozen RBIs. He commands respect.
- 1:25:21Dave left hand batter.
- 1:25:23Osteen into the windup and the pitch.
- 1:25:25She fakes and then does bunt foul in the air, drops untouched in front of the on-charging Garvey.
- 1:25:300-1 to count.
- 1:25:41Two runs, six hits for the Dodgers. No runs, just one hit for San Diego.
- 1:25:45It was a clean single.
- 1:25:47Dave Campbell almost flattened the ball.
- 1:25:49A line drive base hit the left center in the first inning.
- 1:25:53Osteen ready in the strike one pitch on the hands and fouled away. 0-1 to.
- 1:26:06Osteen pitched a shutout of course in his first start against Houston, two to nothing.
- 1:26:13And he's leading two to nothing tonight.
- 1:26:15It's ironical that last year in his first two starts the other team's pitcher pitched shutouts against him.
- 1:26:22Roberts fouls off a big wide curveball and it's still 0-2.
- 1:26:28Osteen has pitched a one hitter in his career.
- 1:26:32He pitched a one hitter against the Giants here in Los Angeles in the middle of June of 1965.
- 1:26:39He also has two two hitters in his career.
- 1:26:44Of course it's pretty early to be talking about the one hitter.
- 1:26:46That's what he has right now, but he's only in the sixth.
- 1:26:50But just in case the thoughts came up.
- 1:26:54Claude reading Sudeikis.
- 1:26:59Still staring in there.
- 1:27:01And now backs up the rubber and suds he goes out to talk to him.
- 1:27:050-1 to the count.
- 1:27:13The Padres have got one man to second base.
- 1:27:16Campbell singled and balked by Osteen over to second.
- 1:27:20Only the second balk in Osteen's National League career.
- 1:27:25But he left him right there.
- 1:27:290-1 to the count to Dave Roberts.
- 1:27:31Campbell the man who was involved is on deck.
- 1:27:34Passball is lifted to deep left center but Davis had a bead on it now and Willie makes the catch.
- 1:27:40To Roberts the fly ball went away.
- 1:27:44Here is Dave Campbell the possessor of the only San Diego hit.
- 1:27:49Campbell came into the game swinging a hot bat at.353 and he's one for two.
- 1:28:04One out in the sixth. Tommy Dean on deck.
- 1:28:10Osteen into the wind up. Claude ready and delivers. Fastball away.
- 1:28:141-1 and 0.
- 1:28:25Osteen checking. Comes back to Campbell 1-0.
- 1:28:28Fastball a big bouncer over the head of Garvey but he spears it and throws him out.
- 1:28:36Let's pause for station identification. This is the Los Angeles-Sobius radio network.
- 1:28:45Your tune to KPAR radio Phoenix, Arizona.
- 1:28:53Two down and Tommy Dean who struck out and then nubbed one and was thrown out by Sudeikis as the batter is over two.
- 1:29:03Osteen checking. Dean waiting and the first pitch to Tom taken high ball one.
- 1:29:09The San Diego Padres of 1970 in a nutshell their longest winning streak five, their longest losing streak eight.
- 1:29:16The most runs they scored in a game 17.
- 1:29:19Most home runs in a game they hit five. Fits the Dean a strike.
- 1:29:25Most errors in a game five.
- 1:29:31The longest hitting streak Chris Canazaro had a 13 game hitting streak.
- 1:29:36The longest losing streak for a pitcher was Dave Roberts. Fits the Dean outside.
- 1:29:41Roberts a good pitcher pitching well tonight. Last year hit a bad spot and lost 10 straight.
- 1:30:00Osteen ready and the 2-1 pitch on the way. Fastball grounded to Russell.
- 1:30:09Billy up with it cleanly. He flips across to Parker and that's it.
- 1:30:13So for six innings Osteen has been very much in command. He's allowed only one hit.
- 1:30:18And at the end of five and a half innings the Dodgers two and the Padres.
- 1:30:25Bottom of the sixth inning with the Dodgers leading the Padres two to nothing. Two runs, six hits and no errors.
- 1:30:30Padres no runs, one hit and two errors. Bill Sudeikis, Steve Garvey and Willie Davis going away.
- 1:30:47Dave Roberts.
- 1:30:51Without a windup ready and delivers and Sudeikis takes low ball one.
- 1:30:55Sudsy Homer in the second inning walks in the foils.
- 1:30:58Bill one of a trio the firm that handles Dodger pitching.
- 1:31:04The firm of Sim Sudeikis and Haller or is it Haller Sim Sudeikis the pitch inside ball two.
- 1:31:10Which remind us Duke Sim had a visitor here at the ballpark who worked out with the Dodgers tonight.
- 1:31:16The brother Farrell from Idaho Falls, Idaho to Opich and Sudeikis felt it if it goes straight it's a home run.
- 1:31:24But it's fucking and it goes there. Home run.
- 1:31:53Bill Sudeikis hits his second home run of the night and we know one thing the catching firm is definitely headed by Sudeikis now.
- 1:32:01Two home runs and the Dodgers lead three to nothing. Here's Steve Garvey.
- 1:32:07The fifth high ball one.
- 1:32:19Here's a one opich and Garvey drives it to left field and deep back to a four hour lease and it's off the wall.
- 1:32:26Backed up by Gaffson and Steve Garvey has a bullet double.
- 1:32:40Boy did Garvey send that thing out there.
- 1:32:56In a hurry. Farrell went racing to the wall and the ball hit just above the brewery where Jim Brewer and company is seated.
- 1:33:11Banged off the wall and alert back up play by Gaffson was able to hold Steve Garvey to a double.
- 1:33:26Right hander Al Santolini begins to throw in the San Diego bullpen.
- 1:33:30We've got some more union all ought to serve.
- 1:33:35The war is a study. Two books of union all auto strip to Bill Sudeikis and two books of the boys club of Santa Ana 950 West Highland in Santa Ana.
- 1:33:46So the Dodgers have two home runs and two doubles tonight.
- 1:33:51Four of their eight hits extra base.
- 1:33:54Last year Bill Grabankowicz had two home runs in a game in Chicago.
- 1:34:00But they hit two in one game in this ballpark is quite an honor and Bill Sudeikis draws it and very early in the year.
- 1:34:08Nobody out. They bring up the corners a bit on Davis.
- 1:34:13Robert's ready to pitch to will outside ball one.
- 1:34:30Now the one oh pitch on the way to Davis is filed away off to the left upstairs and account one ball in one try.
- 1:34:40Ladies night at Dodger Stadium the first ladies night of the year.
- 1:34:45Well we get girls every Saturday night admission only 50 cents for you.
- 1:34:52Hope you make it a habit. Get your man and come on over here.
- 1:34:57One and one account today.
- 1:35:00Ravage delivers and Willie around a bunch takes a hook outside ball to do and one.
- 1:35:10Sudeikis has his two home runs that I just put together three hits in the fifth inning for a run.
- 1:35:16So they lead three to nothing.
- 1:35:26Two and one account.
- 1:35:34Davis takes high ball three and one.
- 1:35:47On deck switch hitting second baseman Bill Russell.
- 1:35:56Willie checks into the play three and one account Garvey at second base.
- 1:36:00Roberts at the belt checks delivers and it's about to down to short Garvey's going to third.
- 1:36:05Dean's only play is the first and he beats Davis by a whisker.
- 1:36:10So a 6-3 ground ball with Garvey taking third and with one out the batter is Bill Russell.
- 1:36:30They will walk Russell intentionally with Osteen coming up so there's ball one.
- 1:36:41Bill Russell gets four wide ones they'll put him aboard.
- 1:36:44Osteen will be the batter three to nothing Dodgers in the sixth inning with one out.
- 1:37:05Russell throws the bat away and clasps the first.
- 1:37:08Preston Gomez comes out to the mound on the run and Claude Osteen makes his way to home plate.
- 1:37:25Preston talking to pitcher Dave Roberts.
- 1:37:28Campbell and Colbert go back to their position so only the battery with the manager.
- 1:37:34And now Gomez walks off the field.
- 1:37:37Osteen has struck out and sacrificed.
- 1:37:40It is conceivable that the Dodgers could have several plays in the work here.
- 1:37:46You could have a hit and run play with Russell going to Garvey holding.
- 1:37:53You could have a straight sacrifice where Osteen tries to stay out of the double play and just punch Russell over to second base.
- 1:38:00So we'll see now what the Dodgers select to do.
- 1:38:03Roberts ready in the pitch Osteen he takes outside ball one.
- 1:38:201 and 0 the count to Claude Osteen.
- 1:38:23Next one outside ball two.
- 1:38:26So Roberts in a jam he's failing three to nothing.
- 1:38:29And he's behind to his opposite number two balls and no strikes with runners at first and third.
- 1:38:42Dave left foot on the rubber leans on the right knee now straightens up.
- 1:38:46Here's the 2 0 pitch Osteen he's around to bat and does and it's fouled.
- 1:38:52He would appear to have been almost batting for a base hit.
- 1:38:56Although if anything else it would have turned out to be a sacrifice to get Russell over.
- 1:39:012 and 1 the count and Claude comes back and we'll see what he does this time.
- 1:39:08Two balls no strikes.
- 1:39:16Osteen checking with Danny Ozar coaching at third.
- 1:39:19Russell held on by Colbert takes his lead.
- 1:39:24Roberts ready checks and they pitch out but this time Russell is not going.
- 1:39:29They were hoping that the Dodgers were going to play sacrifice.
- 1:39:32That is a very big gamble.
- 1:39:35On a 2 1 pitch you pitch out.
- 1:39:37However we told you before that Roberts is an excellent control pitcher.
- 1:39:42He had better be to pitch out 2 and 1.
- 1:39:45Here's the 3 1 pitch Osteen ball four so it hurts.
- 1:39:53Roberts was in the top 10 control last year.
- 1:39:57He has walked three men tonight.
- 1:40:01But to pitch out 2 and 1 is a tribute to his control with a pitcher at the plate.
- 1:40:06But it didn't work and he came back with ball four.
- 1:40:08So the bases are loaded with one out and they're going to go to the bullpen.
- 1:40:13Maury Wills will face Al Santorini.
- 1:40:31So Dave Roberts is coming out.
- 1:40:35Roberts goes into the sixth inning.
- 1:40:37He works five in the third inning.
- 1:40:40And is charged with at least three runs and eight hits.
- 1:40:45Sudeikis got to him twice for home runs.
- 1:40:50And Al Santorini, right-hander who throws very hard, will come in and Wills of course will turn around and bat left-handed.
- 1:40:57So the Dodgers have Osteen at first, Russell at second, and Garvey at third.
- 1:41:03And of course the base hit now they would feel they've kind of broken the game wide open.
- 1:41:07We've got a little time and a few thoughts to pass along your way while Santorini makes a long walk in.
- 1:41:13And here's Jerry to do just that.
- 1:41:15Two team nights at Dodger City in this year, April 16th, next Friday night, and June 4th.
- 1:41:19For these dates, teenagers 19 and younger can get a 250 reserve seat for only $1.
- 1:41:25Send orders by mail to Team Night Dodgers, Box 100, Los Angeles 90051.
- 1:41:31Or buy tickets the night of the game at a team night booth.
- 1:41:35And a reminder picture of Roy Wills is waiting for you at any Ticketron outlet in Sears, Bullock's, May Company, Harrison Frank, and Broadway stores.
- 1:41:43Order tickets by Ticketron at the store nearest you, or order tickets through mutual theater offices.
- 1:41:49And of course at the Dodger ticket office on Stadium Way or by mail to the Dodgers, Box 100, Los Angeles 90051.
- 1:41:58All the Dodgers out in front, three-nothing, trying to get some more now.
- 1:42:01Santorini warming up, let's go back to the action, and here's Vint.
- 1:42:04Now Santorini has picked up quite an investment here.
- 1:42:08The bases are loaded with one out.
- 1:42:10Dave Roberts went five and a third innings charged with at least three runs and eight hits.
- 1:42:15He walked three and struck out two, one of the three walks intentionally granted.
- 1:42:21Santorini, the right-hander, worked for San Diego last year but did not have a decision against the Dodgers.
- 1:42:30And Santorini, lifetime against the Dodgers, is one and two.
- 1:42:38Maury Wills coming up with a base and loaded one out, and the Dodgers have a chance to break it open, leading three to nothing.
- 1:42:45However, to use the term break it open against San Diego might be using a term loosely,
- 1:42:50because this ball club can come back in a hurry and score runs and punches.
- 1:42:54The Vintster Wills hit off a fifth foul or third and slicing into the crowd out of play on one.
- 1:43:01The Dodgers, like every other club, have tremendous respect for the power and run production of the Padres.
- 1:43:14The next one, the Wills is low, one and one.
- 1:43:17We told you earlier that Bill Drabachowicz had two home runs in one game last year in Chicago.
- 1:43:23Most home runs hit here by a Dodger in one game.
- 1:43:27Lou Johnson hit two here.
- 1:43:29Here's the one-one pitch to Wills.
- 1:43:32High ball two, two and one.
- 1:43:34The most home runs in one game hit by a visiting player here would be Wilbur Starjul of the Pirates, who hit three home runs in a game.
- 1:43:41But Bill Sudeikis has hit two tonight.
- 1:43:45Garvey, Russell, and Osteen taking their leads in the two-one pitch to Wills.
- 1:43:50Fouled away off to the left out of play in the count two and two.
- 1:44:02Three-nothing Dodgers, sixth inning.
- 1:44:10Santorini checking into the windup.
- 1:44:12Two-two pitch to Maury Wills.
- 1:44:14Swung on and missed, strike three.
- 1:44:17Now there's a big out for Santorini to get Wills.
- 1:44:20And with two down, we'll see, is it Moda or Buckner?
- 1:44:23It'll be Moda.
- 1:44:24Manny looked over in the dugout before coming out.
- 1:44:26There's a left-hander throwing in the San Diego bullpen.
- 1:44:30We can't pick off his number, but it might be Bill Laxton.
- 1:44:38So Santorini strikes out Wills.
- 1:44:40That's a big out.
- 1:44:42Maury, as we mentioned, is a tough man to strike out.
- 1:44:46Once every 17 at-batch last year.
- 1:44:49Moda takes the strike on one.
- 1:44:51So it's been a memorable night when you think about it.
- 1:44:54Dave Roberts in the top ten has walked three, although that's certainly not high, one of them intentionally.
- 1:45:00Willie Davis, rare to hit into a double play, and he did tonight.
- 1:45:03Wills, who rarely strikes out, has struck out.
- 1:45:06Moda takes low, one and one.
- 1:45:09One and one to Manny Moda.
- 1:45:19Santorini into his wind-up in the 1-1 pitch.
- 1:45:23Moda takes low, ball two, and now the pressure is on Santorini.
- 1:45:26He has to throw a strike.
- 1:45:28He's behind two and one.
- 1:45:31Moda, a board on an error at third, hit back to the box in the third and single up the middle to drive in a run in the fifth.
- 1:45:38The 2-1 pitch to Manny Moda.
- 1:45:42High chopper up along third, tough play for Slocum.
- 1:45:45He can't pick it up.
- 1:45:46The run is over, everybody's safe.
- 1:46:03Ron Slocum had only one chance on that high bouncer.
- 1:46:07That was to charge the ball and angle your body so that in one motion you could barehand it and throw.
- 1:46:14But the ball also had to come up.
- 1:46:16It had to be a pretty high bounce for Slocum to barehand it.
- 1:46:19It not only did not come up, but it went off at the opposite angle, and he never touched it.
- 1:46:24Parker takes outside, ball one.
- 1:46:28So it's a squib single for Moda, and another run batted in for Manny to give him two.
- 1:46:33The run is charged to Roberts.
- 1:46:35They have now four nothing Dodgers, and the 1-0 pitch to Parker with the bases loaded is low.
- 1:46:40Ball two.
- 1:46:47Dodgers have four runs, nine hits.
- 1:46:49For Padres, no runs, one hit.
- 1:46:52Russell Osteen and Moda on the line, and Parker grounds one to Campbell.
- 1:46:56Dave on the run is up with it and underhands to Colbert, and the inning is over.
- 1:47:02The Dodgers come up with two runs on a single double end home run.
- 1:47:06They leave three, and at the end of six innings, the Dodgers four, the Padres nothing.
- 1:47:12Well, it's not only what he does, but how he does it.
- 1:47:16Well, that's another way of saying a certain person has a lot of spirit,
- 1:47:19and it's pretty much the way you'd say a Union 76 dealer has spirit too,
- 1:47:24because no matter what a Union 76 man does for you,
- 1:47:28you'll probably say he does it with a friendliness and courtesy that makes his place a pleasure to drive into.
- 1:47:34Simple things like a map of the city or maybe a little extra air in that front tire
- 1:47:40become as important to him as they are to you.
- 1:47:43He knows that a lot of friendly help with a small problem brings you back
- 1:47:47when your car needs the other things that make it go.
- 1:47:51Yes, doing business with a smile.
- 1:47:53That's a Union 76 man's way of doing things.
- 1:47:57Now, if you like that kind of friendly service, well, drive in and sample our spirit.
- 1:48:02The spirit of 76 lives at Union Oil.
- 1:48:06Why don't you take advantage of it?
- 1:48:09The Dodgers four runs, nine hits, no errors.
- 1:48:14Through six innings, the Dodgers four runs, nine hits, no errors.
- 1:48:17The Padres no runs, one hit, and two errors.
- 1:48:20The finale with the Padres tomorrow at 1 o'clock, Tom Phoebus and Don Sutton.
- 1:48:24The Cubs will be in Monday and Tuesday nights, then the Cardinals Wednesday and Thursday nights,
- 1:48:29and the Houston Astros next weekend.
- 1:48:32And for you youngsters who are particularly interested to begin your collection,
- 1:48:36tomorrow, like every Sunday when the Dodgers are home, it's autograph day from 1140 to 1220.
- 1:48:43And there are autograph booths throughout the stadium to accommodate you.
- 1:48:48About 14 Dodger players will be there to sign books and get your autograph collection underway.
- 1:48:54Let's go to the seven. Dodgers four, Padres nothing.
- 1:48:57For more play, here's Jerry.
- 1:48:58All right, Vinnie, Gaston, Colbert, Brown, right through the heart of the lineup for Osteen now.
- 1:49:02Dodgers have given him a little breathing room.
- 1:49:04It's four to nothing in favor of Los Angeles over San Diego.
- 1:49:08Gaston has grounded out twice.
- 1:49:11Stepping in now, right-hand batter, Lawrence Gaston, 294 batting average.
- 1:49:16He has one RBI on the year.
- 1:49:18Now Osteen checking signs.
- 1:49:20The only hit off, Claude, Dave Campbell, opened the game with a single for San Diego,
- 1:49:24and that's Vinnie at it right through here.
- 1:49:26Here's the pitch on the way.
- 1:49:28Nub Fowl off to the right of the plate, strike one.
- 1:49:31In Osteen's opening game against Houston, he blanked the Astros and felt that he had a fine curveball.
- 1:49:37He made some adjustments in it, and it has been a good pitch for him.
- 1:49:40But also tonight he's used the screwball well, or the off-speed pitch, turning it over a bit.
- 1:49:48He doesn't really call it a screwball, but it has a similar effect.
- 1:49:53Now the lineup and the pitch on the way.
- 1:49:56High with a fastball, one ball, one strike.
- 1:49:59Gaston the batter.
- 1:50:01Campbell's single as the first batter up was a clean hit, bounced right through the middle into center field.
- 1:50:09Now the windup and the 1-1 pitch.
- 1:50:12High outside ball two, two and one.
- 1:50:16Osteen has walked two.
- 1:50:18He walked Colbert in the fourth and Ferrara in the fifth.
- 1:50:26Two and one count.
- 1:50:28Now Osteen ready again and the pitch on the way.
- 1:50:30High again, ball three.
- 1:50:32That fastball running up and away.
- 1:50:34Tomorrow Tom Phoebus and Don Sutton.
- 1:50:37The Cubs are in Monday and Tuesday.
- 1:50:39The Cardinals Wednesday and Thursday.
- 1:50:41The Astros Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
- 1:50:44Three and one.
- 1:50:48Osteen to the windup and the pitch.
- 1:50:50Strike called on the fastball.
- 1:50:52Three and two.
- 1:50:53Trying to keep the ball away from big Clarence Gaston.
- 1:50:55Nate Colbert on deck.
- 1:51:05Osteen all set now with a payoff pitch on the way.
- 1:51:08Checking signs from catcher Bill Sudeikis.
- 1:51:11He walked him.
- 1:51:12Fastball was outside.
- 1:51:14So for the second time he has walked the leadoff batter.
- 1:51:18That's the third walk in the game.
- 1:51:20Ferrara walked as the leadoff man in the fifth inning.
- 1:51:22Here's Colbert at bat.
- 1:51:24He has rounded out and walked.
- 1:51:26But now the Dodgers set the infield double plate up.
- 1:51:28They have turned in one tonight.
- 1:51:30The Padres have turned in two.
- 1:51:32Garvey, Wills, Russell, Parker with a runner at first base, Colbert.
- 1:51:41And the Dodgers leading 4-0 against a very explosive ball club, the San Diego Padres.
- 1:51:46They can pile up a lot of runs in a hurry.
- 1:51:49Osteen backs off now.
- 1:51:52And Parker signals that he will not hold the runner on.
- 1:51:55He's going to play behind Gaston at first base.
- 1:51:59Strong right-hand batter up there, Nate Colbert.
- 1:52:03Off-speed pitch, trickles up the third baseline going foul.
- 1:52:06Sudeikis over to Gloveton, gives it back to Osteen.
- 1:52:10Crowd tonight, 19,705.
- 1:52:13Fine turnout.
- 1:52:14Hope you'll be here tomorrow.
- 1:52:15Should be a nice day.
- 1:52:17And a good game in store.
- 1:52:18Sutton and Phoebus tomorrow afternoon.
- 1:52:20One o'clock.
- 1:52:24One hour, nobody out.
- 1:52:25The Dodgers lead it 4-0.
- 1:52:27And Bill Sudeikis has hit two home runs for the Dodgers tonight.
- 1:52:31One to center field and one right down the left field line.
- 1:52:35Strike one count.
- 1:52:37Colbert waits.
- 1:52:39Here's the pitch.
- 1:52:40A little low with a breaking ball.
- 1:52:42One and one.
- 1:52:44One ball, one strike.
- 1:52:46Claude Osteen trying to get off to a good start this year.
- 1:52:55One ball, one strike.
- 1:52:58Gaston leads away from first base.
- 1:53:00Parker behind him.
- 1:53:01Colbert waiting at the plate.
- 1:53:03Grounded to the right side of the mound.
- 1:53:04In comes Russell Ford.
- 1:53:05His play will have to go to first base in time.
- 1:53:07And on the out, Gaston goes to second.
- 1:53:10So Colbert nubs one off the end of the bat and rolls out to second base with Bill Russell.
- 1:53:16Here's Olly Brown at bat now.
- 1:53:18Brown lined out and grounded out so he is 0-2.
- 1:53:24Olly Brown at bat.
- 1:53:36Action in both bullpens.
- 1:53:41Runner at second, one out, seventh inning.
- 1:53:45Dodgers lead 4-0 over the Padres.
- 1:53:49Now the pitch by Osteen.
- 1:53:50Fastball outside, ball one, just missed.
- 1:53:55The Dodgers had the home run by Sudeikis in the second.
- 1:53:58An infield hit, a sacrifice, and a single by Moda got another run in the fifth.
- 1:54:02A home run by Sudeikis, a double by Garvey, and an infield hit by Moda picked up one more.
- 1:54:08The Padres have had just one hit.
- 1:54:09They have committed two errors.
- 1:54:11The 1-0 pitch, just missed.
- 1:54:14Outside to Brown, 2-0 to count.
- 1:54:17Osteen trying to keep the ball away from these big sluggers there.
- 1:54:20He walked Gaston being careful, got Cobart to nub one off the end of the bat towards second.
- 1:54:25And now he's gone 2-0 to Brown, keeping the ball outside.
- 1:54:32All right, Osteen ready again.
- 1:54:33Sine from Sudeikis, the pitch.
- 1:54:36A little high with a slider, ball three, and so all of a sudden,
- 1:54:38Clodbs had a little control trouble here in the seventh inning.
- 1:54:42He normally would not walk three in a game.
- 1:54:44He has walked three now, and he's gone 3-0 to Brown.
- 1:54:46If he misses here, he'll give up his fourth walk of the game.
- 1:54:53Three balls, no strikes.
- 1:55:00Now again, the look, check, and the pitch on the way.
- 1:55:03And he lost him, high and outside, ball four.
- 1:55:07That's the fourth walk.
- 1:55:09There are two on, and Peraro, the batter, has walked and flied to right field.
- 1:55:15Jim Brewer throwing in the Dodger bullpen.
- 1:55:19He'll have a right-hander and a left-hander in the San Diego bullpen,
- 1:55:22as Parker now goes to the mound to talk to Osteen.
- 1:55:26So Clodbs walked two in an inning here, and four in the game.
- 1:55:30He has struck out four in the game.
- 1:55:31The last strikeout that he picked up was in the third inning.
- 1:55:38So Peraro at bat, Al is making his first start of the year.
- 1:55:42He was 0-3 in three other games.
- 1:55:48Two on, Peraro waiting.
- 1:55:50On deck, Canisaro.
- 1:55:52Here's the pitch.
- 1:55:53Strike with the fastball, picked up the outside corner, 0-1.
- 1:56:03Day game tomorrow, 1 o'clock.
- 1:56:05Seabass and Sutton will wind up the series.
- 1:56:09The Reds lost today.
- 1:56:11They're the last of the match, 3-2 in 11 innings.
- 1:56:13They are 0-3 on the season.
- 1:56:16Strike one count.
- 1:56:18Osteen working to Peraro.
- 1:56:19The infield double played up.
- 1:56:20The outfield around to the left and deep in the pitch.
- 1:56:23Little high, ball one.
- 1:56:25So in the inning, a walk to Gaston, a roll out by Colbert, and a walk to Brown.
- 1:56:29Two men on base.
- 1:56:33One man out.
- 1:56:39One ball, one strike.
- 1:56:48The right-hander in the bullpen is Steve Arlen for the Padres.
- 1:56:51Does the line drive one hop to Russell up with it down to second one.
- 1:56:54On to first base, double play.
- 1:56:55Beautiful play.
- 1:56:57Bill Russell really started that one.
- 1:57:00He took that hot liner on the short hop, going to his left.
- 1:57:04Up, spun around, Fed Wilson was really coming across that bag in a hurry.
- 1:57:08On the throw to first in time, and the Dodgers turn their second double play.
- 1:57:12And boy, that was a pretty one started by Russell.
- 1:57:15And Wills was really flying through the air across second base.
- 1:57:184-6-3 on the double play.
- 1:57:20The side retired.
- 1:57:21No runs, no hits, no errors, and one left in the score at the end of six and a half an inch.
- 1:57:25Dodgers four, the Padres nothing.
- 1:57:28Milwaukee and the world.
- 1:57:41My old man was a seafaring man.
- 1:57:43He used to sail these seas like there was no tomorrow.
- 1:57:46And he drank his deal big.
- 1:57:48He was that man of a slip.
- 1:57:55He had a philosophy about life, my old man.
- 1:58:00He'd say, you only live once, so you've got to make the most of it.
- 1:58:09Yeah, a lot of that stuff with me.
- 1:58:11You've got to live life.
- 1:58:13Live it with all the gusto there is.
- 1:58:15In everything, even in the beer you drink.
- 1:58:19Settle for less, not a chance.
- 1:58:22A man of slips, not a beer.
- 1:58:33Let's pause now for station identification.
- 1:58:35This is the Los Angeles Dodgers radio network.
- 1:58:38The Spirit Son.
- 1:58:44K-T-A-R-C.
- 1:58:51Richie Allen coming on in the last half of the seventh.
- 1:58:53The crowd's standing for the seventh inning stretch.
- 1:58:5519,705 on hand tonight.
- 1:58:58Allen tonight has struck out and hit the ball sharply the next two times.
- 1:59:02In the third into a double play and in the fifth inning into a forced out,
- 1:59:05and he couldn't hit it much harder.
- 1:59:07He really ripped it toward the third baseman.
- 1:59:09So Allen is off to a slow start.
- 1:59:12It's on science now that he is beginning to hit the ball hard.
- 1:59:16Here's Allen at bat with Sudeikis on deck.
- 1:59:25Now the pitch on the way to Rich.
- 1:59:27Inside for ball.
- 1:59:30Al Santorini is now pitching for San Diego, replacing Dave Roberts.
- 1:59:35Roberts pitched well.
- 1:59:37Here's the 1-0 pitch.
- 1:59:39Inside for ball.
- 1:59:41Roberts worked six into third innings, allowed four runs and six hits.
- 1:59:49Make it eight hits.
- 1:59:56Next pitch, Laurel for the ball.
- 2:00:07Curve ball low and it's ball free to Allen now.
- 2:00:12Here's the pitch on the way to Rich and he takes it high, ball four.
- 2:00:15Allen is on with a walk.
- 2:00:24Here's Sudeikis at bat.
- 2:00:26Home run in the second, a walk in the fourth, a home run in the sixth.
- 2:00:30Willie Crawford now will go in and run for Allen,
- 2:00:32and he'll stay in the game of playing the outfield.
- 2:00:35So Allen comes off.
- 2:00:37He's still hurting with that sore left foot.
- 2:00:40And he comes off now.
- 2:00:43So Crawford runs for Allen at first base.
- 2:00:48Sudeikis coming up.
- 2:00:55Bill now is up from the left side.
- 2:00:57He hit his two home runs from the right side.
- 2:01:04There's a runner going and the ball is hit through the hole.
- 2:01:06It's stretched out backhanded by Dean up at his long throw.
- 2:01:09In time on a very close call at first base.
- 2:01:14Sudeikis out on a very close call at first.
- 2:01:18They played hit and run and he hit the ball at the shortstop.
- 2:01:21Dean was breaking to the bag, had to backtrack in a hurry,
- 2:01:23made a good play to get to the ball and to throw just in time.
- 2:01:27So Sudeikis out and on the play.
- 2:01:29Crawford goes into second.
- 2:01:32So Sudeikis moves his man over and just misses his third hit of the game.
- 2:01:36Here's Garvey at bat, grounded out,
- 2:01:38flied out to right and doubled off the left field fence.
- 2:01:42Garvey going into the night hitting 182.
- 2:01:45He's had three hits now and two have been doubled.
- 2:01:48There's a breaking ball low, one ball no strike.
- 2:01:51Dodgers lead at four to nothing.
- 2:01:54And Garvey is trying to make it five with Crawford on second base.
- 2:02:00One ball and no strike.
- 2:02:03The game's two hours along and we're in the seventh.
- 2:02:06Pitch inside on the corner for a strike and it's 101 right in around the knees.
- 2:02:10Good pitch by Santorini.
- 2:02:13One ball, one strike.
- 2:02:16The last half of the seventh.
- 2:02:18A walk to Allen. Crawford runs for him.
- 2:02:20He's on second after the ground out.
- 2:02:22Good pitch inside, ball two, two and one.
- 2:02:35Two and one count.
- 2:02:39Again the look and here's the pitch.
- 2:02:41A swing and a miss at a hard slider, 2-2.
- 2:02:44Santorini pitching to Garvey.
- 2:02:47Willie Davis on deck and Russell to follow.
- 2:02:49Tomorrow right-handers Don Sutton and Tom Phoebus.
- 2:02:552-2. Santorini delivers.
- 2:02:59Garvey hits a high-five ball along the right field line.
- 2:03:02Three players going after Dan.
- 2:03:04On the line in foul territory, Colbert makes the catch.
- 2:03:07Crawford tags that's the third to throw there.
- 2:03:09He's in there.
- 2:03:11Colbert made a fine running catch on the ball in foul territory.
- 2:03:15And Willie Crawford showed heads up by advancing to third after the catch.
- 2:03:25Here's Willie Davis at bat now.
- 2:03:27A double, hit the double play and grounded out.
- 2:03:29One for three.
- 2:03:30Runner on at third base, Willie Crawford.
- 2:03:36So Crawford is on third after the foul out by Garvey.
- 2:03:41Davis has one for three.
- 2:03:43Willie had three for 16 going in.
- 2:03:48Up now with a runner on third.
- 2:03:50Swolcombe, the third baseman, comes up.
- 2:03:51The pitch to Willie Deeb.
- 2:03:53A play on the line drive, base hit the right field.
- 2:03:54That gets the run in.
- 2:03:56So Davis gets his second hit of the game and a run batted in.
- 2:03:58The Dodgers lead five to nothing.
- 2:04:01Crawford scores it.
- 2:04:05And that'll bring up Bill Russell.
- 2:04:12Bill Russell at bat has one hit, been on on an error, and walks.
- 2:04:16So he's one for two.
- 2:04:19Russell now a bat left-handed against right-hand pitcher Al Santorini.
- 2:04:25Four Dodger players have two hits tonight.
- 2:04:28Moda, Parker, Sudeikis home runs, and Davis a double into singles.
- 2:04:32So to first, Willie's back safely.
- 2:04:36Five-0, Dodgers lead it.
- 2:04:39Foud Osteen has allowed just one hit.
- 2:04:42It came to the first batter's face.
- 2:04:44Another throw to first, and again Willie back-heads first.
- 2:04:48The Padres think that he might run if he gets a chance.
- 2:04:55And again a throw, and a block is called.
- 2:04:59So for the second time tonight, first-face umpire Chris Pellicuttis is called a block.
- 2:05:05The first one was on Osteen, on Campbell in the first inning, and now on Santorini with Davis running at first base.
- 2:05:16So Davis is at second, and Russell now trying to bring him in.
- 2:05:21Santorini delivers, low, ball one.
- 2:05:25One ball, no strikes to Russell.
- 2:05:29Bill hitting 250 going into the game, and he's one for two tonight.
- 2:05:38Davis again moves off now the pitch.
- 2:05:41A swing and a miss at a breaking ball, one and one.
- 2:05:44Bill batting left-handed.
- 2:05:47His experiment as a switch-header was very successful through spring training, and now he gets to put it to use in regulation play.
- 2:05:55He is 0 for 5 at the right-hand batter, and 3 for 7 at the left-hand batter, oddly enough.
- 2:06:00The pitch, curve low, and it's 2 and 1.
- 2:06:04So he is actually better here so far as a left-hand hitter.
- 2:06:19Turn-one count, now the pitch. Looks at third base, broken over to grab it for the outtie, broke his bat, and pushed that one to the third baseman.
- 2:06:26So Russell is out, side retired.
- 2:06:28The Dodgers show one run, one hit, one left, score at the end of 7 and needs to play.
- 2:06:34Dodgers 5 and the Padres nothing.
- 2:06:37You know, one day recently, Farmer John said,
- 2:06:39Say, Vin, why is a person who eats my Farmer John bacon every morning like a fan who listens to every Dodger ball game?
- 2:06:46Well, before we could answer, he came back with neither one can get too much of a good thing.
- 2:06:50Well, no denying it, Farmer John's mighty proud of his bacon, and with good reason, too.
- 2:06:55He goes to a lot of extra effort and expense to make sure it's the finest, precious bacon you can buy.
- 2:07:02He uses only fresh Eastern corn-fed pork, which he brings out here live and dresses fresh right here in the West.
- 2:07:09Most packers ship their pork in frozen or cold storage.
- 2:07:13Then Farmer John smokes his bacon like they did in the days of the Old West over native Western wood
- 2:07:19to give it a delectably delicious Western flavor all its own.
- 2:07:23Discover for yourself that you can't get too much of a good thing, meaning Farmer John bacon.
- 2:07:28Enjoy it regularly.
- 2:07:29You'll see why it won the gold medal at the California State Fair
- 2:07:32and why we say it's the Eastern most in quality and the Western most in flavor.
- 2:07:39Get the group sales habit. Get together a group from your place of business, your church, your club, or your school,
- 2:07:44and visit a Dodger ball game. One other range of bus, too.
- 2:07:47And leave the driving and the parking to the driver.
- 2:07:50For tickets, send your request to the group sales Dodgers, Box 100, Los Angeles, 9051.
- 2:07:55You'll get your organization's name up on the message board when you visit, too.
- 2:08:00Willie Crawford is in right field. Manny Motta moves to left. We'll go to the eighth inning. More play. Here's Vinnie.
- 2:08:05All right, Jerry. Five runs, ten hits for the Dodgers. No runs, one hit for the San Diego Padres.
- 2:08:12The one hit came in the first inning to leadoff man Dave Campbell, and it was a solid single,
- 2:08:17a ringing single, or whatever other adjective you want to use to describe it. It was really bellied. Solid base hit.
- 2:08:25Osteen now in the eighth inning will work to Kanijero, Slocum, and Santorini spot.
- 2:08:30There have been a couple of balls well hit. One by Ollie Brown, but at will,
- 2:08:37and one by Ferrara that was speared by Russell and turned into a double play. The pitch low, ball one.
- 2:08:44The other outs have been basically routine ground balls or fly balls.
- 2:08:48Osteen has struck out for his walk three.
- 2:08:56Screwball on the outside corner for a strike. But so far a one hitter for seven innings.
- 2:09:06We told you earlier that he has a one hitter against the Giants in 1965 and right here.
- 2:09:14Here's the one-one pitch on the way. Claude delivers and it's fouled back one and two.
- 2:09:23Osteen has never pitched a no hitter. That honor on the Dodger staff goes to Bill Singer.
- 2:09:34One and two the count to Chris Kanijero struck out hit into a double play. Right hand hitting catcher.
- 2:09:46Osteen nods yes and the one-two pitch on the way is low, ball two.
- 2:10:06Now the two-two pitch coming up. High, ball three.
- 2:10:14A full count to Chris Kanijero. Dodger scored in the second, again in the fifth, then twice in the sixth, then once more in the seventh.
- 2:10:23Bill Sudeikis has had a big night with two home runs. Both as a right-handed batter.
- 2:10:29Three-two pitch is a high drive to Dead Center. Davis going back, way back to the track and makes the catch.
- 2:10:37Straight away, center field. As a guess we'd say the ball traveled about 395 feet and then as Willie thought it he took two steps back into the boards where it's exactly 400.
- 2:10:51So a long out to center, one away and the batter, Ron Slocum, the third baseman.
- 2:10:59Slocum struck out and grounded a short, 0 for 2. Osteen ready and serves one over for a strike on one.
- 2:11:11On deck, pinch hitter Ivan Morrell who has tremendous talent. He might have as much talent if not more.
- 2:11:19All complete tools if anybody on the team gets one on in this fight too. He's coming off an injury and an operation.
- 2:11:27So Ivan Morrell will be hitting for Al Santorini.
- 2:11:370 and 2.
- 2:11:45The next one is outside, ball one, one and two.
- 2:11:50One out, eight inning, five nothing Dodgers.
- 2:11:56Osteen shot out the Houston Astros 2 to nothing and he has the Padres 5-0 here in the eighth.
- 2:12:03Here's the 1-2 pitch to Ron Slocum, swung on and missed, strike three.
- 2:12:11Five strikeouts for Claude and here comes Ivan Morrell.
- 2:12:15All the Padres ready for Santorini. Number 20, Ivan Morrell.
- 2:12:27Ivan Morrell is from Panama. He lives in San Diego.
- 2:12:34On September 24th, he injured his left knee severely sliding home in Atlanta and he underwent surgery.
- 2:12:44Pitch is low to Ivan, ball one, one and O.
- 2:12:47Morrell, 6'298 pounder. When he was smaller, he was an undefeated amateur middleweight.
- 2:12:55He had many offers to turn professional but he decided to turn pro swinging at baseball instead of at other people.
- 2:13:03Here's the 1-0 pitch on the way. Pulled on the ground to third, Garvey plays it off his left hip and throws him out.
- 2:13:10So the Padres are gone in the eighth inning and at the end of seven and a half innings, the Dodgers 5 and the Padres nothing.
- 2:13:18In 1920, airmail humps kicked across the country. Each morning a biplane, remember them, would need a mail train, pick up a sack of mail and fly until sundown.
- 2:13:31Then the mail would be put on another train and moved forward.
- 2:13:34Airmail pilots got flight information by radio from a handful of government airway stations, only a dozen of them in those days.
- 2:13:41Today there are 384 operated by the Federal Aviation Administration and the Department of Transportation.
- 2:13:47They are part of a sophisticated communications network with immediate access to whatever a pilot needs to know.
- 2:13:53Services are free for the asking, free flight briefing, dependable aviation weather forecast, information during the flight about airport and navigational conditions,
- 2:14:01even search and rescue operations to bring lost pilots safely home.
- 2:14:05FAA's flight service stations are a pilot's first stop to safety. Fifty years later, service is still their middle name.
- 2:14:13Music.
- 2:14:21Bottom of the eighth inning, five runs, ten hits and no errors for the Dodgers. No runs, one hit and two errors for the Padres.
- 2:14:33We've seen Dave Roberts and Al Santorini and now left-hander Dick Kelly will be coming in.
- 2:14:41Kelly at one time with the Braves had a sore arm last year and Kelly will now loosen up, getting ready to pitch to the Dodgers.
- 2:14:55Claude Osteen will start things off, then Maury Will and Manny Moda.
- 2:15:04Al Santorini picked up for Dave Roberts and went one and two-third innings, allowed one run and two hits.
- 2:15:15A walk and a strikeout. He also balked and now Dick Kelly will come in.
- 2:15:24Music.
- 2:15:35Pace attendance of 19,705 and remember tomorrow the concluding game of the series.
- 2:15:49Tomorrow is Senior Citizens Day, too. Senior Citizens is admitted for 75 cents. I hope you'll be with us tomorrow.
- 2:15:56Boy, what is beautiful weather. It's a perfect place to spend the afternoon at the Dodger Stadium.
- 2:16:01Claude Osteen takes a strike on one. We told you earlier that Osteen pitched a one-hitter on June 17, 1965 against the San Francisco Giants here in Los Angeles.
- 2:16:11You might be wondering when did that hit come and by whom. The strike one pitches outside, one and one.
- 2:16:19Osteen surrendered the hit against the Giants to Jackie Hyatt, who now catches for Houston.
- 2:16:25Hyatt got a base hit in the second inning and that was the only hit that Osteen allowed.
- 2:16:31Tonight the hit came to leadoff man Dave Campbell in the first inning and that's the only hit he's allowed.
- 2:16:36Pitchers strike in the count one and two. Interesting note about Jackie Hyatt.
- 2:16:41He came up to bat the other night for Houston and got a base hit.
- 2:16:44He has been with five big league clubs and he has gotten a hit his first at bat with each of the five clubs.
- 2:16:50The next one is inside and Osteen just did get out of the way of it. It was not a fastball. It was not an intimidating pitch at all.
- 2:16:57It was just something that got away. Two and two. There's no way that De Kelly's going to be throwing it Osteen.
- 2:17:03Two and two the count. Now Dick Reddy and the two-two pitch.
- 2:17:09Ground ball to shortstop. Dean takes it on a big hop. Goes across the Colbert for the out.
- 2:17:17Maury Wills. Maury Wills coming out.
- 2:17:21Wills has handled his position very well. He's 0-4 with the bat.
- 2:17:27Dodgers have come up with two double plays and several fine individual plays.
- 2:17:34Wills has made a couple. Russell made a dandy.
- 2:17:41Kelly into the windup and delivers. Fastball for a strike. Going one.
- 2:17:46Kelly ready and his strike one pitch on the way. That's another strike.
- 2:17:58Oh and to the count of Maury Wills. Kelly delivers outside ball one. One and two.
- 2:18:17One and two to Maury Wills. Manny Mota on deck. Kelly comes back one-two and it's lifted foul off first base and out of play.
- 2:18:34Nate Colbert over to have a look but that's all.
- 2:18:38Dave Roberts, Al Santorini and Dick Kelly. Tomorrow right-hander Tom Phoebus and Don Sutton.
- 2:18:54And Don Sutton.
- 2:18:59Then the Cubs, the Cardinals and the Astors.
- 2:19:03Kelly into the windup. One-two pitch outside and high. Ball two. That seemed to sail.
- 2:19:12I think Kelly wants another ball to work with. Two and two.
- 2:19:16He gives it back to Kanagero and Chris will rub it up for him apparently.
- 2:19:20Two and two. Two balls, two strikes. Dick looks in to get a sign. Now he's ready.
- 2:19:42And the two-two pitch outside and high. Ball three. Three and two. Has anybody here seen Kelly?
- 2:19:50He's right out there in the middle of the field. He's from Boston. Where else?
- 2:19:59Three-two pitch to Maury Wills. Fouled away off to the right upstairs.
- 2:20:04Kelly was plagued by a bad arm last year that kept him out of service just about the entire season.
- 2:20:11We mean baseball service now.
- 2:20:19Dick originally signed by the Braves. He spells it with an E-Y.
- 2:20:26Ground ball down to short. Tommy Dean gloves it off the bill of the cap and throws him out. Two down.
- 2:20:33Richard Anthony Kelly. K-E-L-L-E-Y from Boston.
- 2:20:38He was 31 in January. He's been pitching professionally since 59.
- 2:20:51All right, here's Molda. Two out on the eighth inning. When O'Sheen goes to work in the ninth, he has Campbell, Dean, and Gaston.
- 2:21:05Kelly delivers and it's swung on and missed. Going one.
- 2:21:170-1 to count to Manny Molda.
- 2:21:25Kelly ready. Strike one pitch outside and high. One ball and one strike.
- 2:21:29Five runs, ten hits for the Dodgers. No runs, one hit. Two errors for the Padres. No suspense for this one, however.
- 2:21:36Leadoff man Dave Campbell got the base hit in the first inning.
- 2:21:40Here's the 1-1 pitch on the way. Foul back. 1-2.
- 2:21:50Just under 20,000 here tonight on this ladies night. 19,705.
- 2:21:55Next Saturday night, the Houston Astros will be here. Go mark that one down, girl.
- 2:22:04Here's the 1-2 pitch to Manny Molda. Off speed, way outside. Ball two. Two and two.
- 2:22:16Dodgers score the run in the second, the run in the fifth, two in the sixth, one in the seventh.
- 2:22:21Next one very high. Ball three. Bill Sudeikis has hit two home runs.
- 2:22:28First time that's been done in a game at Dodger Stadium by a Dodger since Lude Johnson back in 67. We'd lose.
- 2:22:403-2 pitch on the way. Line drive base hit the center field. Gaston up with the ball.
- 2:22:47So Molda, who wears number 11, comes up with the 11th Dodger hit. And the batter will be Wes Parker.
- 2:22:59Parker is two for four tonight. Hit into a fourth play, single to center, single off the pitcher's glove, and grounded out.
- 2:23:07Kelly looks for a sign from Canazaro. Molda off the bag, held on by Colbert.
- 2:23:17Left-handed delivers and Parker takes high. Ball one.
- 2:23:38Parker waiting the 1-0 pitch to Wes. Breaking ball, hit foul down the right field line, slicing out of play back into the crowd.
- 2:23:45One and one. One o'clock game tomorrow, but come spend Sunday with us.
- 2:23:54Don Sutton and Tom Feebus.
- 2:24:07Now the 1-1 pitch to Parker. Kelly kicks, works the play to change curve outside. Ball two, soon one.
- 2:24:23Molda hops off the bag. Parker swinging a bat back and forth. Kelly set at the belt.
- 2:24:30Checks in the 2-1 pitch, low, ball three. On deck is Willie Crawford, who came into the game running for Richie Allen in the seventh inning.
- 2:24:50Three and one to Parker. Dick Kelly ready. Molda goes. Fast ball is taken for a strike to throw on a bounce.
- 2:25:01Dick is set. The 3-1 pitch to Bill Sudeikis. Way outside. He couldn't have hit that from where you are.
- 2:25:09And the bases are loaded with force for station identification. This is the Los Angeles Dodgers radio network.
- 2:25:17Well, Sudeikis never got a shot, so he's standing at first. Willie Crawford at second, West Parker at third, and with two out here is Steve Garvey.
- 2:25:27Grounded out, slide to right, doubled off the left field fence, and fouled out. Kelly ready, delivers high.
- 2:25:45Kelly had worked briefly in one outing this year. This is his second, and he's on the wild side. Garvey takes high again, ball two.
- 2:26:02He got the first two batters, then Molda singles. Parker walked. Molda stole second base prior to Parker's walk.
- 2:26:11Crawford singled home Molda, and a 3-1 pitch to Sudeikis missed by plenty to load him up.
- 2:26:16So here's Garvey in the count two and Oda sees. Garvey takes high again, ball three.
- 2:26:25Well, I tell you, knowing Alston and the way he thinks, it is conceivable that he would even let Garvey swing 3-0 with two down and a left-hand hitter on deck.
- 2:26:38There is a definite chance that Garvey would be allowed to swing. Whether he does or not remains to be seen, but in this spot they might give him the green light.
- 2:26:473-0 pitch to Garvey. He's taking a strike. He started to go to first, three and one. He looks at Ozark now.
- 2:26:56We figured that Sudeikis would be allowed to hit 3-1. Figures now that Garvey would. Kelly trying to throw strikes.
- 2:27:05Deck to the windup and the 3-1 pitch to Garvey is swung on and filed back.
- 2:27:12Okay, full count. Two down, bases loaded. Kelly will work from a stretch. The Dodgers leading 6-0 in the eighth inning.
- 2:27:38Kelly to the rising bag for the moment. Now up on top. Full count, two down. Dick working out of a stretch.
- 2:27:45And of course the runners are ready, Sudeikis, Crawford and Parker. Dick leans in to read Kanisero.
- 2:27:52Garvey waiting. Here's the 3-2 pitch to the young third baseman with the bases loaded. They go and the pitch is in the dirt, ball four.
- 2:28:00That makes it 7-0 Dodgers and everybody moves up 90 feet.
- 2:28:13Two runs charged to Dick Kelly. He's walked three.
- 2:28:17Willie Davis the batter. He is the eighth man to come up in the eighth inning.
- 2:28:21What is particularly frustrating to Dick Kelly and the Padres, Dick retired the first two batters.
- 2:28:27He got Osteen to shortstop, Wills to shortstop, and then it started. A single, a walk, a single and two more walks.
- 2:28:35Bases loaded, two out, the pitch to Willie Low, ball one.
- 2:28:44Crawford at third, Sudeikis at second, and Garvey at first.
- 2:28:507-0 Dodgers in the eighth.
- 2:29:01Kelly to the windup and the 1-0 pitch swung on and missed one and one.
- 2:29:0819,705 dropped by tonight. And if you can, hope your plans will include us tomorrow here at Dodger Stadium.
- 2:29:16The Dodgers and the Padres, the final game of the series. Tom Peebus and Don Sutton.
- 2:29:25Here's the 1-1 pitch to Willie Davis, swung on and missed, right two, one and two.
- 2:29:42Seven runs on a dozen hits for the Dodgers. And in direct contrast, startling contrast, the Padres no runs, one hit.
- 2:29:52And we're in the bottom of the eighth.
- 2:30:02Kelly to the windup and the 1-2 pitch is fouled away.
- 2:30:29One and two to Willie Davis.
- 2:30:34Here comes Kelly and the fastball is low, ball two.
- 2:30:48Crawford at third, Sudeikis at second, Garvey at first. Kelly to the windup and the 2-2 pitch is fouled away.
- 2:30:59Off to the left, carrying to the second deck.
- 2:31:16Davis backs out, now Willie back up again.
- 2:31:21Dodgers at the court twice here in the eighth to widen the gap to a seven to nothing lead.
- 2:31:27Now the 2-2 pitch on the way, on the hands and fouled away out of play.
- 2:31:37What a scramble. Two and two.
- 2:31:53So Kelly and Davis battling it out with the bases loaded. Now Willie back up to the plate. Kelly on the rubber.
- 2:32:05Dick into his windup. Here's the 2-2 pitch to Davis on the hands fouled back and right through the exit gate.
- 2:32:12Willie is keeping everybody busy and it's still two and two.
- 2:32:34Kelly reading Kanazero. Now he's ready. 2-2 pitch on the fifth.
- 2:32:41The little pot flying to shallow center. Dean going out, Gaston coming in, it drops.
- 2:32:46Crawford scores. Tadakis scores on a blue double and it's nine nothing Dodgers.
- 2:33:05But Dick Kelly kept putting that ball in on the knuckles and Willie Davis kept filing them off.
- 2:33:11And they got another one in on the hands and this time he was able to dunk it into center field for a leg double.
- 2:33:17Gaston tried to shoestring it but couldn't do it. So the Dodgers have scored four times here in the eighth inning and they have broken it wide open.
- 2:33:25They lead nine to nothing. First base open to batter is Bill Russell. He is the ninth batter of the inning.
- 2:33:32And remember all this with two out, he swings a missy.
- 2:33:41Thirteen hits for the Dodgers. Russell has one of them.
- 2:33:50Kelly to the windup and the strike one fastball over on the outside corner, strike two.
- 2:33:56Osteen and Wills made out and then it started. Moda single and stole second. Parker walked.
- 2:34:03Crawford singled home a run. Tadakis and Garvey walked forcing in a run. Davis has doubled home two more.
- 2:34:12The strike two pitch to Bill Russell. Taken just low and away, ball one, one and two.
- 2:34:28Nine to nothing Dodgers, eighth inning.
- 2:34:35Garvey is shortly the third. Here's the one-two pitch to Russell. Half swing and a tap or wider first.
- 2:34:42Colbert over to pick it up, throws back to Kelly. Good play for the outs. Kelly barehanded that ball.
- 2:34:49Good play by Dix and they get the last out, three to one. The Dodgers get four runs, three hits and lead two.
- 2:35:00And at the end of eight, Dodgers nine, Padres nothing.
- 2:35:06Got everything Marge? Suitcases, maps?
- 2:35:09They're all in the car George.
- 2:35:10Well it's been a great vacation so far, but tonight we'll be in the...
- 2:35:15What's the matter George?
- 2:35:16The car won't start, it won't even turn over. Oh now what? At home I could just call Harry over at the Union 76 station.
- 2:35:23I know Harry does a good job, but so far from home I don't know who to go to. Nobody's got the old spirit anymore Marge.
- 2:35:30George look up a Union 76 dealer in the directory. I bet they're friendly even away from home.
- 2:35:39You can rely on Union 76 when you're far from home. Our dealers from coast to coast will do their best to solve your problem and get you going again.
- 2:35:47And at Union 76 we try to make a smile standard equipment. Marge, that Union 76 guy was friendly. He told me what was wrong with the car over the phone.
- 2:35:56It was nothing serious then?
- 2:35:58Not really, I forgot to take it out of drive. It was clearer than 76 made with Union Oil.
- 2:36:049th inning here at Dodger Stadium. The Dodgers 9 runs 13 hits and no errors. Padres no runs 1 hit and that's by leadoff man Dave Campbell in the first inning.
- 2:36:20And he will lead off the 9th. 5 against the Giants. That hit came in the second inning. So here is Campbell, he's got the only one.
- 2:36:30Osteen spent a long time on the bench in the 8th inning. He was the first man up and grounded out and then sat around and wound up in the on deck circle when the team sent 9 men up to the plate.
- 2:36:45Osteen with Bobby Valentine now at shortstop and we go to the 9th inning and the pitch is low ball one.
- 2:36:52The Dodgers have Osteen and Sudeikis, Parker and Russell, Valentine and Garvey, Mota, Davison, Crawford in the outfield.
- 2:37:02The 1-0 pitch on the way. A drive to left field and deep. Back goes Mota. Way back to the track. It's gone.
- 2:37:11So Dave Campbell not only had the only hit, he gets the second hit and breaks the shutout with a home run into the left field bleachers.
- 2:37:20And the score, Dodgers 9, Padres 1.
- 2:37:34So Dave Campbell hits one into the bleachers. 9-1 Dodgers.
- 2:37:40And the batter is Tommy Dean, struck out and grounded out twice. Right hand hitting shortstop 0-3.
- 2:37:46He hits one off the end of the stick down to Russell. Bill picks it up and flips to Parker. One away.
- 2:37:54Clarence Gaston, the talented center fielder coming up. He's 0-2 with a walk.
- 2:38:04Dodgers score the run in the second, the run in the fifth, 2 in the sixth, 1 in the seventh, 4 in the eighth.
- 2:38:11And Don Sutton, no doubt, thinking to himself, I wish they'd put a few of those in escrow.
- 2:38:17Take them out tomorrow. Talking about tomorrow, it should be a good day and a good ballgame.
- 2:38:22Tom Phebus for San Diego. Don Sutton for the Dodgers. And sure hope he'd be out here with us.
- 2:38:29Osteen Ruddy and he works Gaston and it's off speed outside, ball one.
- 2:38:36Dodgers had a great deal of success against the Padres here last year. They won 6 out of 9.
- 2:38:41But rarely did a game come easy for them. The 1-0 pitch, foul back.
- 2:38:46They won 5 out of 9 in San Diego and all of those were tough games.
- 2:38:52When the Dodgers conclude this home stand, the first stop on the road will be San Diego.
- 2:39:011-1 to count to Clarence Gaston.
- 2:39:06Osteen reading Sudeikis. Now comes 1-1 and gets it over. Strike two, 1 and 2.
- 2:39:24The 1-2 pitch, screwball fouled away.
- 2:39:491-2 pitch coming up. Fastball fouled away. Deep in the lower deck, back of the San Diego dugout.
- 2:39:57Last year, the most runs the Dodgers scored in a game, and they did it twice.
- 2:40:04But check me, they did it once last year and once the year before.
- 2:40:0719 against the Giants in May, the year before in June of 69 against San Diego.
- 2:40:15Ground ball slowly to short. Valentine up with it, flips across to Parker for the second out.
- 2:40:22One to go now and it's Nate Colbert coming up.
- 2:40:26The leading first baseman is grounded out twice and walk, right hand batter.
- 2:40:511-2, Colbert is high, ball one.
- 2:41:03One hole pitch, Colbert takes outside, ball two. Dodgers brazing 9-1 with two down and the bases empty in the ninth inning.
- 2:41:16Osteen checking out of the windup. Two hole pitch on the way, swung on and missed, Colbert out in front of it, 2-1.
- 2:41:36Here's the 2-1 pitch coming up. Grounded foul outside a third, rolling over to the far corner of the Dodger dugout and right down the runway.
- 2:41:45Two balls, two strikes, two outs, ninth inning, 9-1 Dodgers.
- 2:41:57On the postgame show tonight, not only will we have our interview and scores of other games, we'll begin answering your questions.
- 2:42:04And for anybody who sends in a question that we use on the postgame show, we'll send two tickets free to the Dodger game.
- 2:42:11The pitch to Colbert is hit to deep left field, back goes Moda, Dodgers-Davis to the wall, it's gone.
- 2:42:18Donate Colbert, who hit seven home runs against the Dodgers last year, muscles one into the bleachers. That makes it 9-2 Dodgers.
- 2:42:28Osteen just trying to get the ball over the plate, leading 9-0 going in, has given up home run balls to Campbell and now Colbert.
- 2:42:38It will not do more, at least for the moment, than Mus' hair, however, and Ollie Brown coming up.
- 2:42:51Here is Ollie Brown, grounded out, lined out and walked. Brown right hand hitting right fielder.
- 2:42:59Osteen's pitch outside ball one. Nate Colbert reaching the bleachers, that's his third home run and his eighth run batted in.
- 2:43:09Osteen figures that if they hit it, the percentages, seven out of ten, will be caught.
- 2:43:14The pitch to Brown outside ball two. Well, he's gotten two out and two out of the playing area.
- 2:43:27Here's the two-hole pitch to Ollie Brown, a strike, two and one. Al Ferraro on deck.
- 2:43:35Dodgers led one to nothing through four, two to nothing at the end of five, four to nothing at the end of six, five to nothing at the end of seven, and then they got the four and the eight.
- 2:43:44Next one outside, ball three. Three and one to Ollie Brown.
- 2:43:59Flawed into the windup and the three-one pitch coming up, swung on and missed, strike two. Three and two.
- 2:44:18Ollie Brown waiting, Osteen checking. Flawed ready in the three-two pitch on the way.
- 2:44:23Ollie Brown ball sharply to Garvey. He has it, straightens up, it's Parker with the throw and that's it. The Dodgers win handily nine to two.
- 2:44:31We'll have the totals, the winning and losing pitchers right after this message.
- 2:44:35Schlitz, Milwaukee and the world.
- 2:44:46A winter hunt isn't a kid's game when it's underneath the Atlantic Ocean. Sharks don't play games.
- 2:44:54Their ancestors must have had quite a feast 250 years ago when the hurricane sank a fleet of Spanish galleons, along with $14 million in gold doubloons and pieces of lead.
- 2:45:07You can find some of it. If you're even luckier, you live to celebrate it with gusto. And man, that's when you know what life really is.
- 2:45:21Because you know you only go around once and you've got to look for all the gusto you can, even in the beer you drink.
- 2:45:29And that means Schlitz. Why settle for less? When you're out of Schlitz, you're out of beer.
- 2:45:42The totals on the ballgame, the Dodgers nine runs, 13 hits and no errors. The Padres two runs, three hits, two errors.
- 2:45:49He's been all the way. His second victory, his second complete game. He is now five and three lifetime with San Diego. Robert Santorini and Kelly and Robert's the loser. He's 0 and 1.
- 2:46:00He is now three and three lifetime with the Dodgers. They have split the two games a rubber game of the series tomorrow, Don Sutton and Tom Phoebus.
- 2:46:08Two home runs in the ballgame by Bill Sudeikis and there were two home runs for San Diego by Dave Campbell and Nate Cobras.
- 2:46:15It is not very often that a player hits two home runs in one game at Dodger Stadium. Lou Johnson did it in 1967. Jimmy LaFever did it twice in 1966.
- 2:46:26Bill Sudeikis who handles Claude Osteen's game and hit the two home runs will be our guest. Jerry will chat with him after this.
- 2:46:34But, Rents, again, we want to remind you the final score of the ballgame, the Dodgers nine and the Padres two.
- 2:46:56The Dodgers scoreboard brought to you by Knudsen, largest seller of fresh dairy products in Southern California and by your nearby Toyota dealer where you get quality automobiles and quality service.
- 2:47:11The Dodgers found themselves in a terrific pitching duel for the first five innings, but home runs by Bill Sudeikis finally eased the load.
- 2:47:18Claude Osteen out pitching Dave Roberts and then the game fell apart for San Diego as the Dodgers added four big runs in the eighth inning to take a nine to nothing lead.
- 2:47:27Osteen, then trying to just get the ball over the plate, gave up home runs to Campbell and Cobras but got the three outs and walked in with a nine to two victory.
- 2:47:35Bill Sudeikis who hit the two home runs had one more chance in the eighth inning to perhaps unload again and be the only Dodger in history to hit three here.
- 2:47:45The only player ever to hit three, Wilbur Scargill and Sudeikis had a 3-1 pitch but it was a mile high and outside and he never had a chance to swing the bat.
- 2:47:54Well Bill will be our guest and he'll do a little swinging for you while he talks to Jerry Doggett and they'll get together right after this message.
- 2:48:01Say if you like potato salad and have been going through a lot of trouble to make it yourself because you've never found one you really like, try Knudsen potato salad.
- 2:48:12Knudsen makes a potato salad that everybody raves about.
- 2:48:16That's because a lot of good things go into it.
- 2:48:19Specially selected white rose potatoes, fresh crisp celery, onions, hard cooked eggs, sweet peppers, pickle relish and mustard.
- 2:48:29And then they wrap it all up in a special dressing made with Knudsen Hampshire sour cream.
- 2:48:36All Knudsen fresh salads have delicious dressings made with Hampshire sour cream, fresh creamy coleslaw, macaroni salad and carrot and raisin.
- 2:48:48Try them all. They're so good you won't bother to make them from scratch anymore.
- 2:48:53That's Knudsen fresh salad. Look for them in the deli or dairy case.
- 2:49:04Well we were wondering how to call the catching firm, those gentlemen who handle the Dodger Fitchers.
- 2:49:09Would it be alphabetical which would mean Haller, Simms, Sudeikis or would it be whoever had the big blow?
- 2:49:15Certainly tonight it starts off the firm of Sudeikis, Simms and Haller. Let's go to Sudney and to Jerry.
- 2:49:22Alright buddy thank you very much. Well Bill I know it was a big thrill to hit two in one game.
- 2:49:26It sure was Jerry. First time I ever did it off the major leagues and it really felt good.
- 2:49:31How about in the minor leagues did you ever do it Sam?
- 2:49:33Yes I did it once in 67. I hit one left hand and one right hand and the year before I started to switch it I hit two in one game.
- 2:49:42I guess even one's a thrill though isn't it?
- 2:49:44It sure is. I love to see them go off.
- 2:49:46Bill the first one went into the center field seat. What'd you hit remember?
- 2:49:50I hit a cripple with three and one and it was a fastball up around letter high and it was out over the plate.
- 2:49:58The ball I hit last night I hit just about the same you know I hit.
- 2:50:03I hit it just as hard but was caught last night. I thought he was going to catch it tonight again. I didn't think it had a chance of going out.
- 2:50:11Sometimes you can hit a ball hard and it stays in the pot because I guess it's a low line drive like the one last night.
- 2:50:17Gaston made a great play on that ball.
- 2:50:19He sure did. He can go get him with the back Jerry.
- 2:50:22Bill the second home run was down the line and around the foul pole. Did you think it was going to be foul?
- 2:50:28Well when I first hit it I thought it was going to be foul. Then I saw it and I knew it was going to be fair then.
- 2:50:33You had a couple of other chances to add three and maybe four. In fact you just barely missed the leg hit and that would be a really big victory wouldn't it?
- 2:50:40Well nothing against Chris but I told him you got to watch my speed so be aware of it next time.
- 2:50:46Can we just say a few words? Yeah I thought I had a beat off but I never get that close to a bang bang place. I really didn't know.
