- 1:25Speaker 1: the Great Dick Powell. It's an episode of the Lux
- 1:29Speaker 1: Radio Theater and adaptation of the nineteen forty eight movie.
- 1:34Speaker 1: This play was broadcast on May the twenty third of
- 1:38Speaker 1: nineteen forty nine, and the title is To the Ends
- 1:41Speaker 1: of the.
- 1:41Speaker 2: Earth Present Hollywood, leave a brother this company, but they
- 1:54Speaker 2: here's the Luck's Flake. Bring you the lux Radio PFM,
- 1:59Speaker 2: starring Paul and Signa Hassel in To the Ends of
- 2:03Speaker 2: the Earth, Ladies and Gentlemen, you're producer mister William Peelick.
- 2:13Speaker 3: Reading flung Hollywood ladies and gentlemen. In our play tonight,
- 2:17Speaker 3: we take you on a trail of intrigue and suspense
- 2:20Speaker 3: that circles the globe. J Richard Kennedy wrote the story
- 2:24Speaker 3: and screenplay of To the Ends of the Earth, and
- 2:27Speaker 3: we have the same stars you saw in the Columbia
- 2:29Speaker 3: Fixtures release, Dick Powell and Signey Hassel. At one time
- 2:34Speaker 3: or another in my travels, I think I have visited
- 2:37Speaker 3: most of the fascinating and exotic places of Tonight's exciting story.
- 2:41Speaker 4: And there's one thing.
- 2:42Speaker 3: I can assure you you'll find everywhere lux Flakes, proof
- 2:46Speaker 3: enough that lux Flakes had made a hit not just
- 2:49Speaker 3: with the American Housewife, but in Saigon and Singapore and
- 2:53Speaker 3: To the Ends of the Earth. Here's the first act
- 2:56Speaker 3: of our play, starting Dick Powell as Mike and so
- 3:00Speaker 3: as Anne gragged.
- 3:13Speaker 4: The United States Department of Treasury. To most of us,
- 3:16Speaker 4: that means the place that makes.
- 3:17Speaker 5: The money that green stuff we scramble to get. And
- 3:21Speaker 5: then give back so cheerfully. But the Treasury departments a
- 3:24Speaker 5: lot more than that. It's the Coastguard, Secret Service, Alcohol
- 3:28Speaker 5: Tax Unit, Narcotics.
- 3:30Speaker 4: That's where I work narcotics.
- 3:32Speaker 5: My name, by the way, is Michael Barrows, and I
- 3:34Speaker 5: work out of the San Francisco office.
- 3:37Speaker 4: And this is the story.
- 3:38Speaker 5: Of how I learned about an innocent, pretty little flower.
- 3:42Speaker 5: The poppy, it's not the kind of poppy you've seen.
- 3:45Speaker 5: After this one blooms and the petals fall, the pod
- 3:48Speaker 5: is ripe. When you bleed that pod, and the liquid
- 3:51Speaker 5: that oozes out is processed. The finished product is opium.
- 3:57Speaker 5: One day before the war, my assistant Harry Hart brought
- 4:00Speaker 5: in the teletype from my boss in Washington, Commissioner Anslinger.
- 4:04Speaker 4: She's as a ship Mike a braider, and trying to
- 4:06Speaker 4: make a landing along the South American coast. Well, what ship,
- 4:09Speaker 4: no name of markings thing driven north and spotted off
- 4:12Speaker 4: Peru in Mexico. My trapper landing around here to refuel
- 4:15Speaker 4: or something. Okay, I'll contact the coast.
- 4:17Speaker 5: Guard, just a routine check, but I thought i'd tag
- 4:24Speaker 5: along when two days later the Coastguard spotted the freighter.
- 4:28Speaker 5: Must have been hiding in one of the island coves
- 4:30Speaker 5: and now was making a run sea.
- 4:32Speaker 4: She was still in our twelve mile limit.
- 4:35Speaker 5: If she could get out, she'd be protected by international law.
- 4:38Speaker 4: The captain signaled her to stop. She's caught our seno barrels,
- 4:42Speaker 4: but she's putting on more sea. Oh a headress Ruddem's
- 4:45Speaker 4: fire one over the ball.
- 4:51Speaker 5: The shot didn't face her. We kept on her tail,
- 4:53Speaker 5: acting like we meant to board her and see.
- 4:55Speaker 4: What the bluff would do. She was passed a twelve
- 4:58Speaker 4: mile limit.
- 4:59Speaker 5: Now I was alone at the rail, trying to pick
- 5:01Speaker 5: up something through the binoculars. Suddenly I saw a scramble
- 5:05Speaker 5: on the deck, the crew and about one hundred men.
- 5:08Speaker 5: What happened then was almost impossible to believe. They were
- 5:11Speaker 5: pushing those hundred men overboard, and men were chained again,
- 5:14Speaker 5: dropping into the sea and disappearing.
- 5:16Speaker 4: It was all over less than that. I told the
- 5:19Speaker 4: skipper what I'd seen. I asked him to catch up
- 5:21Speaker 4: with her, at least let me get a better look.
- 5:23Speaker 5: The deck was now empty, just the captain on the bridge,
- 5:26Speaker 5: a face I'd never forget.
- 5:29Speaker 4: Then we turned back and circled the spider where I've
- 5:31Speaker 4: seen the men go down and out of the water.
- 5:33Speaker 4: Came the only piece of evidence that said I hadn't
- 5:36Speaker 4: dreamed the whole thing. A life preserver. It told me
- 5:40Speaker 4: that the ship was the Kira Maru out of Shanghai.
- 5:43Speaker 5: Six days later I was in Shanghai the office of
- 5:46Speaker 5: the Japanese company.
- 5:47Speaker 6: Almost shocking story, mister Bouts, But unfortunately we have no
- 5:52Speaker 6: record of a Japanese ship named Kira Mru.
- 5:55Speaker 4: You'll believe what I've told you.
- 5:56Speaker 6: It is strange that you alone should see one hundred
- 5:59Speaker 6: men murdered.
- 6:00Speaker 4: Petilla Maroon was too far off. I saw what happened
- 6:03Speaker 4: with the binoculars. Your word is good enough, mister Badows.
- 6:06Speaker 4: We would take action against the captain of the Kiro Maru.
- 6:09Speaker 4: So they brought him to trial.
- 6:11Speaker 5: He wasn't there to defend himself, of course, and they
- 6:13Speaker 5: couldn't be sure that such a man even existed.
- 6:16Speaker 4: But they passed.
- 6:17Speaker 3: And this is for having carefully considered the testimony. Finds
- 6:20Speaker 3: that if a not guilty and sentences him to a prison.
- 6:23Speaker 7: Term of thirty.
- 6:24Speaker 4: Days, thirty days in America, that's what you get for
- 6:26Speaker 4: reakfast driving.
- 6:27Speaker 3: Such sentence to be carried out when and if the
- 6:29Speaker 3: Accusday's apprehended.
- 6:31Speaker 4: Thank you, mister Varrows. That is all.
- 6:36Speaker 5: I came to a slinger that I was licked and
- 6:38Speaker 5: coming home. I was in the hotel packing my bag
- 6:41Speaker 5: when I had a visitor, a Chinese.
- 6:44Speaker 4: I saw you in court, mister Varrows. I followed your
- 6:47Speaker 4: story with great interest. Hi. Who are you one who
- 6:50Speaker 4: has always.
- 6:51Speaker 3: Thought that the climate in parts of South America was
- 6:54Speaker 3: admirably suited to the growing of the opium puppy? The
- 6:57Speaker 3: men you saw murdered were slaves intended for such work.
- 7:00Speaker 4: Slaves? Huh? You would recognize that captain again as you
- 7:03Speaker 4: saw him. I would.
- 7:04Speaker 3: Three days ago a Japanese captain was landed here illegally
- 7:07Speaker 3: from a fishing boat. Why would such a man take
- 7:10Speaker 3: employment here in Shanghai as a rich runner?
- 7:12Speaker 4: Where would I find him? And we'll get to that,
- 7:14Speaker 4: mister Donalds.
- 7:15Speaker 3: These slaves you say you saw six months ago in Egypt,
- 7:21Speaker 3: a Chinese coolie escaped from a ship called.
- 7:23Speaker 4: The Kila Naru.
- 7:24Speaker 3: Before he died, he gave some information to a British
- 7:27Speaker 3: gentleman named Hedley.
- 7:28Speaker 4: Look if you know anything about that captain, I also
- 7:30Speaker 4: make interest you.
- 7:31Speaker 3: The Cooley told mister Hadley that he was one of
- 7:34Speaker 3: two hundred slaves brought to Egypt to plant a large
- 7:37Speaker 3: field of puppies where for whom he did not know,
- 7:39Speaker 3: but he mentioned their name.
- 7:40Speaker 4: Hawks, Jean hawks.
- 7:43Speaker 3: The slaves said gene hawks was a sign a coat,
- 7:46Speaker 3: maybe a man, maybe a woman, maybe an organization. He
- 7:49Speaker 3: also said that the harvest of that puppy field would
- 7:52Speaker 3: be sent here to Shanghai or refining.
- 7:54Speaker 4: This man Hadley, who is he? The British narcutage commissioner
- 7:58Speaker 4: in Carol? Oh this official information? How did you get it?
- 8:02Speaker 4: I think this will answer all questions. This cablegram if
- 8:05Speaker 4: arrived at my office, But it's for you, some washing pat.
- 8:12Speaker 5: You are talking to lum Chi Cha Chinese Commissioner of Narcotics.
- 8:17Speaker 5: You rush to Shanghai a little them possibly, but you
- 8:20Speaker 5: may stay to do yourself some good Answlinger.
- 8:23Speaker 4: You see, I too, had cabled mister Anstick. Glad to
- 8:27Speaker 4: know your commissioner.
- 8:29Speaker 3: Now about Egypt. Two hundred slaves plant a puppy field.
- 8:32Speaker 3: Six months later you count one hundred off the California Code.
- 8:37Speaker 3: Certain facts begin to come together. Only one hundred would
- 8:40Speaker 3: be needed to harvest the crop. The others were loaded
- 8:42Speaker 3: back on the kiln roof for South America.
- 8:45Speaker 4: What's that got to do with the man you were
- 8:46Speaker 4: going to help me find?
- 8:47Speaker 3: If that rickshaw runner is the captain of the Kiram Roo,
- 8:50Speaker 3: he's the only link I have between Egypt and the.
- 8:53Speaker 4: Refining of that opium here in Shanghai.
- 8:55Speaker 5: Oh why let the stuff get here? Why not round
- 8:58Speaker 5: it up in Egypt before it harvested?
- 8:59Speaker 3: The British and Egyptians have been searching for months, and you're.
- 9:03Speaker 4: Expecting raw opium from puppies they can't find to show
- 9:06Speaker 4: up here and very soon?
- 9:08Speaker 3: How do you know from the puppies grown there legally
- 9:11Speaker 3: for medicinal purposes franted about the same time in Egypt,
- 9:15Speaker 3: the harvest must be completed within.
- 9:16Speaker 4: Five days or they pass. Will run a.
- 9:19Speaker 5: Puppy field that no one can find. A story from
- 9:21Speaker 5: a dying coolie slave.
- 9:23Speaker 3: You expect me to swallow that I swallowed the hundred
- 9:27Speaker 3: slaves going overboard in chains off the California court.
- 9:31Speaker 5: Oh okay, Commissioner. Now suppose I see that rickshaw runner.
- 9:35Speaker 4: And not until you agree to take others from me.
- 9:37Speaker 5: Oh, I'm sorry. I only worked on cases when I believe.
- 9:40Speaker 3: In them, I will compromise for just five days, pretend
- 9:44Speaker 3: to believe and follow my orders.
- 9:47Speaker 4: After five days, the case is finished or there is
- 9:49Speaker 4: no case.
- 9:50Speaker 3: At that time, the Japanese ship Captain becomes your private property.
- 9:54Speaker 4: Okay, okay. Where did we start? At?
- 9:56Speaker 3: A soccing home, the largest rickshaw station in the city.
- 10:00Speaker 3: It is owned by Nicholas Soki.
- 10:02Speaker 4: Let me tell you how about the.
- 10:09Speaker 5: Next morning I call on Nicholas Sokin. Here in America,
- 10:13Speaker 5: if you want to go somewhere, you call a taxi.
- 10:14Speaker 5: In Shanghai, you call a rickshaw a spig business. I
- 10:18Speaker 5: told mister Sokine that my name was Brett and I
- 10:21Speaker 5: was in the rock business. That I was looking for
- 10:24Speaker 5: a Japanese.
- 10:24Speaker 8: Who recently went to work as a wrickshaw and I
- 10:27Speaker 8: have gone through mister Bred and my assist, mister Greek,
- 10:31Speaker 8: is the.
- 10:31Speaker 4: Favorite than the employed. We have no Japanese working. Oh thanks, Sokim,
- 10:36Speaker 4: You've been very cooperative. I won't stop looking. If I
- 10:38Speaker 4: find anything, I'll call you.
- 10:40Speaker 5: I was about to leave when a young woman walked up,
- 10:43Speaker 5: good looking.
- 10:43Speaker 4: Well dressed, holding onto her hand was a Chinese girl.
- 10:47Speaker 9: I beg your pardon.
- 10:49Speaker 6: I've been looking for mister shan Chan Shellman's volt Tools.
- 10:53Speaker 9: Yes, I understood they would start from here.
- 10:55Speaker 4: Mister Grig Yes, sir Sheemon's Voltours. Have I been here
- 10:59Speaker 4: for rickshaw today? They schedule for tomorrow.
- 11:02Speaker 9: Morning, sir oh, I see, well, thank you very much.
- 11:04Speaker 9: I'm sure come along, dear.
- 11:07Speaker 5: I walked back to the hotel and so the day.
- 11:09Speaker 5: But it was so keen I was thinking about. I
- 11:12Speaker 5: was sure I'd never hear from him again. I was
- 11:15Speaker 5: in my room trying to figure the next move, and
- 11:17Speaker 5: the phone rang.
- 11:19Speaker 4: Hello, the man you want to live in a rooming
- 11:24Speaker 4: house number seventeen many abe, what's his name? It was
- 11:27Speaker 4: by the name of Sego, and that's all I can know. Thanks.
- 11:34Speaker 5: I waited for over an hour and very alley. Then
- 11:37Speaker 5: I saw him come out, and.
- 11:39Speaker 4: Then I'd come six thousand miles to find Captain Sick.
- 11:47Speaker 5: It was easy following him. He led me straight back
- 11:50Speaker 5: to my own hotel, to the desk club.
- 11:53Speaker 3: Oh, mister Shannon is expecting me of the Shannon World Tours.
- 11:57Speaker 4: What is his room number? Please? Five or six? Shannon
- 12:02Speaker 4: World Tours.
- 12:03Speaker 5: This morning it was the good looking girls whould mention
- 12:05Speaker 5: Shannon World Tours in front of skins.
- 12:07Speaker 4: Yes, sir Ohio, I was just wondering if any American
- 12:10Speaker 4: tours happened to be in town. Yes, Shanon's World Tour.
- 12:14Speaker 4: What's the schedule? He has one of his folder saw
- 12:16Speaker 4: it's on here, big car, a small seven or even.
- 12:22Speaker 5: Ten minutes later, I tailed Captain Sego back to seventeen
- 12:25Speaker 5: very alley, hitching to lay my hands on this murderer.
- 12:28Speaker 5: But he wasn't my private property yet. Not for four
- 12:31Speaker 5: more days. Back in Lumb's office, we looked for Shannon's
- 12:34Speaker 5: pedigree in the Narcotics Codebook.
- 12:37Speaker 4: It was Lumb who spotted it.
- 12:38Speaker 3: Here's your man, mister Badows, a little younger than the
- 12:40Speaker 3: photography in the Carver folder, but here.
- 12:42Speaker 5: He is only here, He's He's listed to say Shay
- 12:46Speaker 5: instead of Shannon. What's to say about him? World travels?
- 12:51Speaker 5: Huh A dodge to make narcotics smuggling easier.
- 12:55Speaker 3: Tomorrow morning, enjoin that party of tours for day. Memorize
- 12:58Speaker 3: their faces.
- 12:58Speaker 5: And there's one I have memori A good looking girl
- 13:01Speaker 5: who came to skims this morning.
- 13:02Speaker 4: They hope she'll be there tomorrow morning.
- 13:09Speaker 5: A pleasant day's work ahead, A tour of Shanghai chat
- 13:12Speaker 5: with my American companions.
- 13:14Speaker 4: As we drove along in time to study every face.
- 13:17Speaker 5: There was a stop at the Willow Patten Tea House
- 13:19Speaker 5: for refreshments. My first real chance at those two I've
- 13:22Speaker 5: seen yesterday looking for Shannon the girl and her young
- 13:26Speaker 5: Chinese companion. Well, it's right of crowded in here, isn't it?
- 13:32Speaker 4: What? Oh?
- 13:34Speaker 10: Yes, yes it is.
- 13:35Speaker 4: Oh do you mind those those flowers? Isn't that a rosa? Geniss?
- 13:40Speaker 4: Is he? I go in for roses? My name's Brent.
- 13:43Speaker 4: I traveled for a rug firm.
- 13:44Speaker 5: How do you do a little friend here? She seems
- 13:47Speaker 5: so unhappy. I hope she isn't there.
- 13:48Speaker 4: Shoe Pan speaks English. Oh I'm sorry.
- 13:51Speaker 10: I didn't know, but it's quite all right. You see,
- 13:53Speaker 10: the Japanese bombed and captured Chupin's village. Took it, took
- 13:57Speaker 10: a family way, and it happened only.
- 13:59Speaker 4: A few weeks ago. Oh, I see Chupin. Huh. Well
- 14:03Speaker 4: that's a nice name. Huh. I think I'll just call
- 14:06Speaker 4: you princess. I didn't get your name. Her name is
- 14:10Speaker 4: missus Anne Grant. Oh. Well, it's a nice tour, isn't it,
- 14:13Speaker 4: missus Grant? You're going all the way to the States.
- 14:15Speaker 9: Princess, Yes, to San Francisco.
- 14:18Speaker 4: Well, what do you know? That's my hometown. I think
- 14:20Speaker 4: you're both very lucky to be going there. Oh, Missus
- 14:22Speaker 4: Grant isn't going? Oh you're staying in China?
- 14:25Speaker 9: Yes, yes, I am chupin.
- 14:28Speaker 10: Come along, dear, I promise miss Harrison a well.
- 14:30Speaker 5: Known brush off, interesting and a little mysterious as Missus Grant.
- 14:35Speaker 4: And exactly why why she's staying in China?
- 14:38Speaker 5: Well, what little I learned went under my pocket notebook.
- 14:41Speaker 5: I couldn't risk remembering every minor detail, and minor details
- 14:45Speaker 5: might prove very important. Our last stop for the day
- 14:48Speaker 5: was at the temple. When we came out, it didn't
- 14:50Speaker 5: seem too unusual that the wheel of my witch Shaw
- 14:52Speaker 5: should break down, or that Shannon himself should offer to
- 14:56Speaker 5: walk me back to the hotel.
- 14:58Speaker 8: Tell me, mister Bran, didn't you lose something this afternoon?
- 15:02Speaker 8: This is yours, isn't it this notebook?
- 15:05Speaker 4: Oh? Yes, yes it is. What did you say your
- 15:07Speaker 4: business is? Or in the rug?
- 15:10Speaker 8: Hmm, stranger make these notes about my guests? Or are
- 15:14Speaker 8: you really a census taker?
- 15:16Speaker 4: I have no idea. Let's get back to the street,
- 15:18Speaker 4: and we will save a lot of time down this alley. Now,
- 15:22Speaker 4: what did you want those names for?
- 15:23Speaker 8: It?
- 15:23Speaker 4: Talk past Minster? Who are you now?
- 15:25Speaker 5: Before you get tough, mister Shall listen, you've been caught
- 15:28Speaker 5: before this time. You'll do five years unless you talk
- 15:30Speaker 5: about what a ship named the Killer Maroon.
- 15:32Speaker 8: I don't know what you're talking about, but I know
- 15:34Speaker 8: who you are, and I'm not gonna.
- 15:36Speaker 4: Let you in a podcast. They have peered out of nowhere,
- 15:45Speaker 4: eight of four Kay's little helpers. When I came to
- 15:50Speaker 4: I was lying on a dock at the waterfront. It
- 15:52Speaker 4: was almost dark. Bending over me was a King's assistant,
- 15:57Speaker 4: Mister Greed.
- 15:58Speaker 11: You'll be all right, mister Britt, Oh great, you're a
- 16:02Speaker 11: very lucky man. Mister Sukeem had a hunch this might happen.
- 16:05Speaker 4: Oh what did happen?
- 16:07Speaker 11: Shannon was going to kid you. I followed him here,
- 16:11Speaker 11: but he resisted. Well, Shannon's dead.
- 16:15Speaker 4: Yes, he was wearing this belt.
- 16:18Speaker 11: It's unrefined opium.
- 16:23Speaker 4: Mister ZC. King knew he had it somewhere.
- 16:25Speaker 11: How he called on mister Sakim before your tour started, missus,
- 16:29Speaker 11: A king told him he had no interest in smuggling narcotics.
- 16:32Speaker 4: Than what Shannon said.
- 16:34Speaker 11: This ship it was perfectly safe, straight off a Japanese boat.
- 16:38Speaker 4: Did he say where it was grown? I believe he
- 16:41Speaker 4: mentioned Egypt Square in each of all.
- 16:44Speaker 11: I don't know, sir, I have to reveal, mister Brenton.
- 16:48Speaker 11: If that's I'd better take it your account.
- 16:50Speaker 5: And if you don't mind, I'd like to stop at
- 16:52Speaker 5: a friends first, mister Lum, twenty five Peacock Lane.
- 17:03Speaker 4: Perhaps i'd better wait for you in the cars. No,
- 17:06Speaker 4: I'd like you to meet, mister Lum and you can
- 17:09Speaker 4: start telling me.
- 17:10Speaker 5: The truth, all right, I don't understand, or maybe this
- 17:14Speaker 5: will help you understand. Misters hello, Lam, you better give
- 17:20Speaker 5: me a hand, all right.
- 17:21Speaker 4: Greek and not get up and go ahead. Had a
- 17:24Speaker 4: very interesting tour, so I could see you would hit me.
- 17:27Speaker 4: Why why here's mister why?
- 17:30Speaker 5: Well, listen to this. I tangled with Shannon this afternoon
- 17:33Speaker 5: was not cold, walk up miles away on the river.
- 17:36Speaker 5: Shannon's dead at least, mister Greek says so that much.
- 17:38Speaker 5: I believe mister greeg under so Keem's orders saved my life.
- 17:43Speaker 4: Mister Sokin did more. Yeah, take a look at this well,
- 17:47Speaker 4: OpEM Greek says he found it on Shannon. Opium from
- 17:50Speaker 4: the Kira Marou from Egypt. That's what Shannon said. You
- 17:53Speaker 4: heard him say it, well, did you? Yes, you're a liar.
- 17:58Speaker 5: The opium couldn't have been from Easy because poppies can't
- 18:01Speaker 5: be harvested until a pedal's fall, and they fall this
- 18:03Speaker 5: week today.
- 18:03Speaker 4: Maybe the opium we're looking for is still in Egypt.
- 18:06Speaker 5: Shannon's got that from the Japanese captain. He got nothing
- 18:09Speaker 5: from the Japanese captain. Soakin told the captain to lead
- 18:12Speaker 5: me to the hotel yesterde.
- 18:13Speaker 4: I was supposed to hear him say, mister Shannon's room please.
- 18:17Speaker 4: That was to throw me off.
- 18:18Speaker 5: Depends suspicion on Shannon. And then mister Sokeem saves my life,
- 18:23Speaker 5: throws me some narcotics.
- 18:24Speaker 4: It could have been Shannon's or anybody. Then you think
- 18:26Speaker 4: mister Sokeem is interested in narcotic He's got to be.
- 18:29Speaker 5: And ten to one, that refining equipment you're looking for
- 18:32Speaker 5: is somewhere in Soakim's Reckshaw stations.
- 18:34Speaker 3: I'll phone the police. They can take up mister greg
- 18:37Speaker 3: I ask Captain Sego and later.
- 18:38Speaker 4: We'll raise Sokme's takes later. Why not now? Because first
- 18:42Speaker 4: I want to know more of what happened today. This way,
- 18:45Speaker 4: mister Greek, Well that's about it. Lam. Here you have
- 18:55Speaker 4: the names of everyone in the party.
- 18:56Speaker 5: It will be well to question them all except missus Graham.
- 19:00Speaker 5: I told you that Shannon's tour is leaving Shanghai, but
- 19:03Speaker 5: Missus Grant is staying.
- 19:04Speaker 4: Do that means she couldn't be tied up with.
- 19:06Speaker 3: Him, but she could be tied up with Sokim waiting
- 19:09Speaker 3: to arrive.
- 19:10Speaker 4: At the Opium from Egypt.
- 19:12Speaker 5: Then, if she's half as smart as you think she is,
- 19:14Speaker 5: she won't talk. You'll get nothing out of her. But
- 19:16Speaker 5: I think I can through the Chinese girl.
- 19:19Speaker 4: Good. Now about Sokim's place, you're ready to raid it?
- 19:22Speaker 5: Yes, now, I am ready. While that's going on, have
- 19:24Speaker 5: the police pick up Missus Grant. Be sure they leave
- 19:26Speaker 5: Chupin in the hotel.
- 19:28Speaker 4: You are not coming with me on today, No, I
- 19:30Speaker 4: think I'll learn more in the hotel with Chupin before
- 19:45Speaker 4: we bring her. At two to the Ends of the Earth.
- 19:48Speaker 8: Here's Liviy Collins, our Hollywood fashion reporter.
- 19:51Speaker 7: You know john girls who are going to college this
- 19:53Speaker 7: fall or who are in college now will get a
- 19:56Speaker 7: lot of.
- 19:57Speaker 10: Good ideas from Jean. Peter's ward Girl opens every spring, and.
- 20:01Speaker 8: Will chemistry professors get ideas about becoming baseball players like Raymlane.
- 20:06Speaker 10: Well better get Jean's opinion on that she was a
- 20:09Speaker 10: co ed herself not so long ago. Incidentally, she's just
- 20:12Speaker 10: left for Saint Louis with other stars from the studio
- 20:15Speaker 10: for the picture's premiere on the twenty sixth.
- 20:18Speaker 9: She plays the daughter of the president of the university.
- 20:21Speaker 10: So twentieth century Fox made a careful check of what
- 20:23Speaker 10: the well dressed co eds are wearing before designing jeans costumes.
- 20:28Speaker 10: Her wardrobe, for it happens every spring, includes lots of
- 20:32Speaker 10: lovely blouses for her suits, and of course separate slaters
- 20:36Speaker 10: and skirts.
- 20:37Speaker 4: Sounds like a luxible wardrobe, it is.
- 20:40Speaker 9: And so true to college life.
- 20:42Speaker 10: Lux flakes are as popular on college campuses as they
- 20:45Speaker 10: are in Hollywood studios.
- 20:47Speaker 8: That's easy to understand, these tiny diamonds of lux Equipping
- 20:51Speaker 8: the SuDS fast and what girl isn't always in a hurry.
- 20:55Speaker 7: The SuDS are wonderfully thick and rich too, So much
- 20:59Speaker 7: college w washing is done in the bathroom basin girls
- 21:02Speaker 7: appreciate the way lux flakes float away soil.
- 21:05Speaker 9: With gentle squeezing.
- 21:07Speaker 7: Besides, allowances can't stand expensive cleaning bills, so lux flakes
- 21:13Speaker 7: are the rule for everything safe in water, loans, blouses, sweaters,
- 21:18Speaker 7: nice cottons, and washable prints.
- 21:20Speaker 8: An easy way for any woman to keep things fresh
- 21:23Speaker 8: and attractive, especially.
- 21:25Speaker 4: In warm weather.
- 21:27Speaker 8: Lux Flakes are another fine product of Liver Brothers Company.
- 21:31Speaker 10: With lux Flake's care, you can freshen things in no time,
- 21:35Speaker 10: and your favorite washables stay lovely far longer.
- 21:39Speaker 8: Now you're a producer, mister William Keely, Act two of
- 21:43Speaker 8: To the Ends of the Year, starting Dick Powell as
- 21:46Speaker 8: Mike and Signy Hassau as Anne Grant.
- 21:57Speaker 4: And Sol.
- 21:58Speaker 5: While a lum and the police were rating Jean's rickshaw
- 22:00Speaker 5: station and Missus Grant was being held at headquarters for questioning.
- 22:04Speaker 5: I went to her room to the hotel. The Chinese
- 22:07Speaker 5: girl from pan opened the door. Oh wow, hello, Bressus
- 22:12Speaker 5: is Missus Grant in?
- 22:14Speaker 9: She went out. She was very upset.
- 22:16Speaker 12: The tour is not saying to America.
- 22:18Speaker 4: Yes, I heard about that.
- 22:19Speaker 5: I thought I could help you get to San Francisco
- 22:21Speaker 5: some other way.
- 22:22Speaker 4: I oh, I bet you've known missus Grant a long time? Huh?
- 22:26Speaker 12: Only a year, mister Gregg. She was my governor's back
- 22:29Speaker 12: home and panion after her husband died.
- 22:31Speaker 4: Oh that's too bad.
- 22:33Speaker 5: I suppose mister Grant was a teacher or a missionary
- 22:36Speaker 5: an engineer.
- 22:37Speaker 4: You were married in America, Missus Brandon's to tell me
- 22:40Speaker 4: all about her? Oh? Hello, Missus Grant, I was just.
- 22:44Speaker 9: Talking to Penn.
- 22:45Speaker 10: I'm sorry, dear, but I forgot to stop in the lobby.
- 22:48Speaker 9: Would you see if there.
- 22:48Speaker 4: As any name? Please?
- 22:49Speaker 9: Yes, of course, Thank you dear. And now, mister Brant,
- 22:55Speaker 9: what are you doing here?
- 22:56Speaker 4: Weren't you called at the police station about channel Why?
- 22:58Speaker 10: Yes, they said, back here to get my papers.
- 23:01Speaker 5: Well, I knew shoe panels alone. I thought I could
- 23:04Speaker 5: cheer up a little strange kid. She can't be more
- 23:07Speaker 5: than thirteen or fourteen yet time, well.
- 23:10Speaker 10: At times she looks much older. Yes, that's what deaths
- 23:15Speaker 10: and bonds will do to your child.
- 23:16Speaker 4: Suppose I could help you, Missus Grant. How about two
- 23:19Speaker 4: tickets on a clipper?
- 23:21Speaker 9: Stay kind of you, but I'm not going to America.
- 23:24Speaker 4: You want to stay in China? Yes, I do. Well,
- 23:27Speaker 4: I guess you have your reason.
- 23:28Speaker 10: The children of this country have the right to live.
- 23:31Speaker 4: You're kind of young to bury yourself in pani end.
- 23:35Speaker 10: What else did Suepan tell you, mister Ben Something about
- 23:38Speaker 10: my husband?
- 23:38Speaker 4: Perhaps she mentioned him, Yes, he was.
- 23:42Speaker 10: Killed by Japanese boonds by doing a job for China.
- 23:45Speaker 10: I intend to finish that job as best.
- 23:47Speaker 5: I can, and i'd go back home and tell Americans
- 23:49Speaker 5: about China, raise barrels of money for thousands of shoe pounds.
- 23:54Speaker 5: Or maybe there's something else you don't want to talk
- 23:57Speaker 5: about it.
- 23:58Speaker 4: What makes you think because of shoe Pan means to
- 24:01Speaker 4: you what you say. She does, that's the point.
- 24:03Speaker 9: She doesn't And as soon as she realized, hello, it's rather.
- 24:08Speaker 4: Important, schedule conforms mister Brett. That is I finish. I'll
- 24:12Speaker 4: be right over.
- 24:14Speaker 5: Oh that was those people who sent for you, missus Grant,
- 24:17Speaker 5: And while i'm there, I'll try to make some arrangements.
- 24:19Speaker 4: I'm sure everything's going to be all right. Thank you.
- 24:26Speaker 5: We made a good guess about sokeem. Upstairs, over the
- 24:29Speaker 5: shed where the rickshaw drivers.
- 24:31Speaker 4: Lived was equipment enough to refine half the opium in Asia.
- 24:35Speaker 4: Only mister so Kim wasn't there to tell us about it.
- 24:38Speaker 4: He swallowed poison. Mister so Kim was dead. So actually
- 24:44Speaker 4: we have learned very little. Mister prebrows, he died before
- 24:47Speaker 4: I could question him.
- 24:48Speaker 5: Oh, we should never have moved in on him. We
- 24:51Speaker 5: should have waited until the opium from Egypt arrived.
- 24:53Speaker 4: Once you knocked mister big down, there was little else
- 24:56Speaker 4: we could do. Oh, I know I made a bad mistake.
- 24:59Speaker 4: Well my time, I've made a few myself. So Kim
- 25:03Speaker 4: is afraid, afraid of what mister bellows.
- 25:06Speaker 3: For years, there's been an organization in China operating in drugs,
- 25:10Speaker 3: backed by the Japanese High Command. Why because drugs either
- 25:14Speaker 3: way of people's will to resist and conquests becomes easy
- 25:17Speaker 3: in the brains of this organization, citizens of all nations,
- 25:21Speaker 3: the Latic and Soukims who believe in conquests, the generates
- 25:25Speaker 3: who can be bought to do this fealthy work for
- 25:27Speaker 3: the Japanese High Command.
- 25:28Speaker 4: But let someone fail. So Kim failed suicide. So Kim's
- 25:33Speaker 4: death will warn the others that raw opium will never
- 25:36Speaker 4: come here.
- 25:36Speaker 3: Now, I am sending so Kim's papers to Cairo immediately
- 25:40Speaker 3: at their possibility.
- 25:41Speaker 4: They will yet find the puppy field. It is my
- 25:45Speaker 4: hope that you will take them.
- 25:47Speaker 5: Oh, I'm sorry, Lama. I know it was my blunder
- 25:50Speaker 5: that finished the case here, but it is what about
- 25:53Speaker 5: Missus Grant.
- 25:53Speaker 3: For a year and a half before coming to China,
- 25:56Speaker 3: she was in Egypt, daus and dates on her passport
- 25:59Speaker 3: need no note of it.
- 26:00Speaker 5: Look look now, any decision on my going to Egypt
- 26:02Speaker 5: would have to be made by my boss.
- 26:04Speaker 4: Mister Anstinger and I have exchanged several messages. He's quite
- 26:09Speaker 4: willing that you should call one step ahead of me,
- 26:13Speaker 4: right down the line. Excuss. Yes, Missus Catan sing, We
- 26:18Speaker 4: have just released Missus Grant. Thank you. She wishes to
- 26:20Speaker 4: leave at once for San Francisco, which should pine one
- 26:23Speaker 4: moment please. Missus Grant wishes to go to San Francisco.
- 26:27Speaker 4: She told you that she told me she was staying
- 26:30Speaker 4: in China. Well let her go. Our men they're gonna
- 26:34Speaker 4: watch other moments she lands. We think she should go.
- 26:37Speaker 4: Captain I was met in Cairo by the Egyptian and
- 26:46Speaker 4: British Narcotics commissioners. I'm a Hassam and Lyle Hadley. Hassam
- 26:50Speaker 4: went to work on Skin's papers while Hadley broke the
- 26:53Speaker 4: unhappy news that this was the last day of the
- 26:56Speaker 4: poppy hiters. All he was sure was the room.
- 27:00Speaker 5: You would take what it left, pigypt Take a look
- 27:02Speaker 5: at the map, mister Barrows. We know that poppy field
- 27:04Speaker 5: this summer in this area. If so, the only logical
- 27:07Speaker 5: way out of Egypt with the raw opium would be across.
- 27:10Speaker 4: The Show's canal. And the nearest crossing of the canal
- 27:12Speaker 4: is here. And if all the harvest hasn't been mood,
- 27:16Speaker 4: what's left will go tonight?
- 27:17Speaker 5: I'm afraid. So did you check on missus Grant? She
- 27:20Speaker 5: and her husband left Cairo ten months ago. No record
- 27:23Speaker 5: of where they went.
- 27:24Speaker 4: Well.
- 27:24Speaker 13: Alexander Sukin's papers one lonely clue, gentleman, this letter and
- 27:29Speaker 13: other contents.
- 27:30Speaker 4: But the handwriting, what about it? Hazam?
- 27:32Speaker 13: It's written in English, but the men who wrote this
- 27:34Speaker 13: letter first learned to write in Arabic. There's certain characteristics.
- 27:38Speaker 13: I examined the paper itself made in France. French paper
- 27:42Speaker 13: isn't sold in Egypt, but it is sold.
- 27:44Speaker 4: In the French Manday. It's such as Lebanon.
- 27:46Speaker 5: But I thought the proper field was in Egypt. What
- 27:48Speaker 5: does Lebanon come in Lebanites. We have many wealthy Lebanites
- 27:51Speaker 5: with the states in Egypt, especially in the suspected area.
- 27:55Speaker 4: Suppose to run the film again? Why not? We have
- 27:58Speaker 4: notion victors of some of the Lebanon the states. Mister Barrows,
- 28:01Speaker 4: let's look the moon. This is the last three of
- 28:07Speaker 4: mister Barrows. The estate you're looking at now belongs to
- 28:10Speaker 4: Ali Yusuf.
- 28:11Speaker 13: Ten acres of roses grown for perfume.
- 28:14Speaker 4: What kind of roses? They don't look like much from
- 28:16Speaker 4: the air rosas actor, probably your rose fencia. No I
- 28:20Speaker 4: certainly am. I'd like to get the cutting of that
- 28:22Speaker 4: roses act to the take home of me. This next
- 28:25Speaker 4: estate belongs to Jaffa Pasha. Maize and cotton easily identified.
- 28:30Speaker 4: And now we moved to the uplands. Uplands, how do
- 28:33Speaker 4: they get the water tight over from the nile drawn
- 28:36Speaker 4: up by pumps? That's a bit of engineering.
- 28:38Speaker 13: And now this state is at the edge of the
- 28:40Speaker 13: Bayadea plateau, the property of beIN the Shah thirty acres
- 28:44Speaker 13: of roses for perfume.
- 28:46Speaker 4: Artificial irrigation. A very modern job was done up there
- 28:49Speaker 4: about two years ago.
- 28:51Speaker 5: You wouldn't remember that engineer's name. I'm afraid now cheer
- 28:55Speaker 5: up Barrows. Perhaps what we all need is a drink.
- 28:58Speaker 4: How far is it to this Benda SHA's place? Oh?
- 29:01Speaker 4: Three hours, Sacka.
- 29:03Speaker 5: I'd like to have a specimen that rose. Bindershaw would
- 29:06Speaker 5: never let you go near the place. It's strictly against
- 29:08Speaker 5: Mars and love.
- 29:09Speaker 4: That's why we had the photograph in the air. Why
- 29:11Speaker 4: couldn't I climb one of those cliffs? You're not serious?
- 29:14Speaker 4: Why not? Will?
- 29:16Speaker 5: Even if you didn't break your neck climbing binder Show
- 29:18Speaker 5: would break it for you when.
- 29:19Speaker 4: You got to the top.
- 29:19Speaker 5: Oh, it'd be dark for the time I got there.
- 29:21Speaker 5: Mind if I borrow your car. Nothing could prevent Hapley
- 29:28Speaker 5: and Hassan from coming with me. They knew it was
- 29:31Speaker 5: more than a row I was after, and these were
- 29:34Speaker 5: the last desperate minutes of the last day.
- 29:36Speaker 4: They were ready to follow even this wild hunt of mine.
- 29:39Speaker 4: But the irrigation system that bender shars had been installed
- 29:42Speaker 4: by an engineer named Grant. It was a clear knight.
- 29:46Speaker 5: Once at the top of the cliff, we saw the
- 29:48Speaker 5: almost endless line rows. We're getting too close to the house,
- 29:54Speaker 5: and lady dogs.
- 29:55Speaker 4: With that a leave. We found exactly nothing what did
- 29:58Speaker 4: you expect to find?
- 30:00Speaker 5: I really know, but an engineer doesn't come all the
- 30:02Speaker 5: way from the United States just install a few pumps
- 30:05Speaker 5: for growing roses, unless he'll wait it else.
- 30:11Speaker 4: I had to take a look at that irrigated soil.
- 30:14Speaker 4: It has just been cultivated too.
- 30:16Speaker 5: My hunch was leaping around like mad now, and then
- 30:18Speaker 5: all of a sudden, the almost unbelievable answer. There in
- 30:23Speaker 5: the earth almost covered a vattered stem that had been
- 30:26Speaker 5: holed under just a little while ago. Not a rose stem,
- 30:29Speaker 5: but a stubby one with a fallen pot at the end.
- 30:32Speaker 5: Stem of the opium poppy.
- 30:34Speaker 4: Poppy stems planted, grown and harvested under.
- 30:38Speaker 5: The rose bushes, the one that we couldn't detect anything
- 30:40Speaker 5: from the air well.
- 30:42Speaker 4: Now we know how the opium might be going through
- 30:45Speaker 4: and perfume jars, cottons of rose petals. I should be
- 30:47Speaker 4: at the Swiss crossing telling my men what to look for.
- 30:49Speaker 4: Suppose the last of the harvest is still here. Take
- 30:52Speaker 4: the kahasan, get to the crosser. What about you. I'll
- 30:55Speaker 4: keep looking here. I'll stay with you. That'll be at
- 30:57Speaker 4: the crossing in the thirty minutes. I'll since I'm ind
- 31:00Speaker 4: to watch for you. Here, take my gun. Well, let's go. Though,
- 31:06Speaker 4: we finally found what we were looking for, a vine
- 31:10Speaker 4: that held the entire secret in it, stupefied with opium,
- 31:14Speaker 4: or what remained the two hundred slaves brought to each
- 31:16Speaker 4: of six months before, and the cure marole.
- 31:19Speaker 5: Also in the vine where the vets where the gummy
- 31:22Speaker 5: juice of the poppy plant had been turned.
- 31:23Speaker 4: Into raw opio. May I ask what you are doing here,
- 31:29Speaker 4: binda shaw. Yes, we've been learning about the harvest of
- 31:33Speaker 4: the opium potty. Your knowledge comes late. The harvest left
- 31:36Speaker 4: here an hour ago. I did not come alone. Gentlemen,
- 31:42Speaker 4: I am well protected. We didn't come alone either. Your
- 31:45Speaker 4: entire estate is surrounded. The best thing you can do
- 31:47Speaker 4: is the tennis where the opium is going. I have
- 31:50Speaker 4: completely forgotten. Order your men to put down their guns.
- 31:54Speaker 4: Up Popka all allow you.
- 31:58Speaker 5: The men lowered their guns and disappear. It seemed incredible
- 32:01Speaker 5: that then the Shah should surrender so readily. We ordered
- 32:04Speaker 5: him ahead of us and walked back toward the cliff.
- 32:10Speaker 5: Suddenly he started running straight for the cliff and over it,
- 32:14Speaker 5: a second fanatic like so Kim, paying with.
- 32:17Speaker 4: His life for faith taking all information with him.
- 32:26Speaker 5: By midnight we were at the Suez crossing, only there
- 32:29Speaker 5: wasn't a sign of the opium. At dawn, Hassam's men
- 32:32Speaker 5: came back from then the Shaws.
- 32:34Speaker 4: Where they searched the estate. Then the Shaw's.
- 32:36Speaker 5: Private papers yielded nothing, But out of the pumphouse came
- 32:40Speaker 5: an interesting item, an engineer's log book.
- 32:44Speaker 4: In the book was a snapshot. Well who is she
- 32:46Speaker 4: that us using to recognize him? Ah? Missus grant this
- 32:52Speaker 4: logbook belonged to her husband, that Hassam. This sounds exciting.
- 32:57Speaker 4: That's not news, and I think I know where it
- 32:59Speaker 4: is now? Who is left is crossing tonight?
- 33:01Speaker 5: According to the customs men, no one's left here since
- 33:03Speaker 5: six o'clock yesterday afternoon.
- 33:05Speaker 4: About the camel driver, I told you about what you said.
- 33:07Speaker 3: His camels weren't carrying no nothing on their backs. One
- 33:10Speaker 3: native driver ten camels headed for Beirroot, You said. A
- 33:12Speaker 3: camel driver said, the price of tamel heir and hides.
- 33:15Speaker 4: Has just gone up.
- 33:15Speaker 13: He's taking them to a slaughter house.
- 33:17Speaker 4: And what makes you? I just telephone beut.
- 33:19Speaker 8: Actually the price of camel hair and hides had gone down.
- 33:22Speaker 4: The driver was lying.
- 33:24Speaker 13: It is my opinion, the opium is inside the camels,
- 33:27Speaker 13: forced down their throats, and some sort of containers that
- 33:29Speaker 13: will be removed at the slaughter house in Bay Roads.
- 33:32Speaker 3: Fantastic, any more fantastic than poppety plants growing under roses.
- 33:37Speaker 5: I suggest we get to bearroot, gentlemen, and wait for
- 33:39Speaker 5: the camels. Padley put a couple of men on the
- 33:45Speaker 5: trail of the camel driver. We took over again. There
- 33:48Speaker 5: are the outskirts of Beirut, but this was French territory
- 33:52Speaker 5: and helping us now as a melarriciated the French nacatis cheap.
- 33:56Speaker 13: It is vital this year that the camel driver never
- 33:59Speaker 13: know that we susp How can we examine his camels
- 34:01Speaker 13: without his knowing? He will find hundreds of cameras at
- 34:04Speaker 13: the edge of the city and men from the Department
- 34:06Speaker 13: of Sanitation checking the beasts against disease, his ten camels
- 34:10Speaker 13: along with all the others. What he will not know
- 34:12Speaker 13: is that only his camels will be phluoroscopes. You get
- 34:15Speaker 13: suspicious undoubted.
- 34:17Speaker 5: As a result, there will be no delay at the
- 34:19Speaker 5: slaughter house.
- 34:20Speaker 4: Now, I suggest you wait at the hotel. I will
- 34:23Speaker 4: have the information you need sometime this afternoon. Well, Monsieur,
- 34:33Speaker 4: I can now report.
- 34:35Speaker 13: In the stomach of each camel were many metal cartridges.
- 34:38Speaker 13: You may be sure they contained the opium grown on
- 34:41Speaker 13: Bindeshah's estate, and estimated one hundred thousand dollars worth in
- 34:45Speaker 13: each piece, a million dollars.
- 34:46Speaker 4: All told, where would the cameras state them?
- 34:48Speaker 13: To a slaughterhouse owned by a man named Agassiz. Forty
- 34:52Speaker 13: minutes ago it left the slaughter house for the ducks.
- 34:54Speaker 4: It carried three bales for shipment. And let's get to
- 34:57Speaker 4: the ducks. We've got to know their destination.
- 34:59Speaker 13: One of my and already has that information. The first
- 35:02Speaker 13: bail went to a Mediterranean frata addressed to Monsieur il
- 35:05Speaker 13: Lexatau Athens, Greece.
- 35:07Speaker 4: Please.
- 35:07Speaker 13: The second, we'll go about a French ship bomb for
- 35:09Speaker 13: Marseille and someone named Dlier. The other bear went to
- 35:13Speaker 13: a Dutch freighter address to n. Brunch Data, Havana, Cuba.
- 35:18Speaker 13: We can be fairly sure, Monsieur, the million dollars worth
- 35:21Speaker 13: of opium is in one of those bales.
- 35:28Speaker 5: That night, at dinner, we celebrated the first solid clue
- 35:31Speaker 5: that might take us eventually to the leader of gene
- 35:34Speaker 5: Hawk's ring.
- 35:35Speaker 13: That more, Monsieur Bell went in Shanghai. You told me
- 35:38Speaker 13: before you would show me your photograph.
- 35:40Speaker 4: Oh here you are Risier.
- 35:42Speaker 5: We found it in Grant's log But yes, yes, very beautiful,
- 35:47Speaker 5: intelligent too knew there are poppies growing at Denver Shahs,
- 35:52Speaker 5: much too intelligent to mention it.
- 35:53Speaker 14: And she is still in Shanghai.
- 35:55Speaker 4: No, no, no, she's not.
- 35:57Speaker 5: Oh by the way, Oursier that you're sending to Havana tomorrow,
- 36:02Speaker 5: that's on my way home. I'd like to follow that
- 36:04Speaker 5: veil myself. Not a hunch Barrows, no had lee. This
- 36:08Speaker 5: time it's information. I had a cable today from my
- 36:12Speaker 5: office in San Francisco. Here read it, and Grant left
- 36:17Speaker 5: San Francisco a few hours after arrival.
- 36:21Speaker 4: Destination Havana, Cuba.
- 36:32Speaker 8: Pause now for station identification. This is CBS, the Columbia
- 36:36Speaker 8: Broadcasting System.
- 36:58Speaker 3: After a brief intonation, we'll continue with Act three of
- 37:01Speaker 3: To the Ends of the Earth. Our special guest tonight
- 37:04Speaker 3: is beautiful Lola. All right, Lola has just been handled
- 37:08Speaker 3: a new contract with Columbia Pictures, and.
- 37:10Speaker 12: So willed mister KILLI. I can hardly believe that you.
- 37:12Speaker 4: Only tell me to Columbia. You've been a very appupil.
- 37:15Speaker 12: Well, yes, I did study hard, but what I appreciated
- 37:18Speaker 12: most was the opportunity of going on sets. That's how
- 37:22Speaker 12: I happened to see that terrific earthquake scene for Lust
- 37:25Speaker 12: for Gold, and I certainly wasn't pressed.
- 37:27Speaker 4: Really great picture.
- 37:29Speaker 3: Now Glenford does a remarkable job with an unusual characterization.
- 37:33Speaker 3: There's something really different what he's done here before on
- 37:35Speaker 3: the screen.
- 37:36Speaker 12: I loved I the Lupino and the lovely costumes of
- 37:39Speaker 12: the eighties, and what a sizzling.
- 37:41Speaker 3: Performance has all those period costumes for Lust for Gold.
- 37:44Speaker 4: They once have given the wardrobe people.
- 37:46Speaker 3: A headache when they were on location in Arizona.
- 37:48Speaker 12: The wardrobe mistress mentioned that. But John Kennedy will be
- 37:52Speaker 12: interested to know that the company took along plenty of
- 37:55Speaker 12: locks of plates Miss Dupino's embroidered stockings as well as
- 37:59Speaker 12: her own eyeline beautifully a.
- 38:01Speaker 8: Matter of dollars in sents economy, Lola, I can believe that.
- 38:05Speaker 12: My own nyelons are washed with luck flakes and.
- 38:07Speaker 9: They last for ages.
- 38:08Speaker 8: You may not realize it, but that simple care is
- 38:11Speaker 8: giving you twice aware. If you were to use strong
- 38:14Speaker 8: soaps or rubbed nylons with cake soap, they would go
- 38:17Speaker 8: into runs a lot sooner.
- 38:18Speaker 4: Stream tests proved.
- 38:20Speaker 12: That so luxtam is certainly easy, just about.
- 38:22Speaker 8: The easiest care in the world. These tiny diamonds burst
- 38:26Speaker 8: into SuDS. The instant water touches them, and in no
- 38:29Speaker 8: time at all, these thick rip SuDS makes stockings fresh
- 38:33Speaker 8: and trim fitting as ever, help protect the colors too.
- 38:37Speaker 8: Thank you for coming tonight, Lola. All right, here's your producer,
- 38:41Speaker 8: mister William Keeley.
- 38:42Speaker 3: The curtain rises on the third act of To the
- 38:45Speaker 3: Ends of the Earth, starting Dick Powell as Mike and
- 38:48Speaker 3: Senior hassl As and Gruns.
- 38:59Speaker 5: I am was sure that the containing the opium was
- 39:01Speaker 5: the bail being shipped to Cuba, or why was missus
- 39:04Speaker 5: Grant going there? That's what I told the narcotics Commissioner
- 39:07Speaker 5: in Havanah.
- 39:08Speaker 4: I'll bet it to Barrago. It should not be difficult,
- 39:10Speaker 4: Senor Barrows. I will let you know where she is,
- 39:12Speaker 4: what she does, in whom she sees.
- 39:13Speaker 5: So one person she will be saying, I think is
- 39:16Speaker 5: a fellow named Brandstatter, You know.
- 39:17Speaker 13: Him, the manufacturer of ARTI supplies a belief brushes, things like.
- 39:21Speaker 4: That getting the camel air for his brushes from the
- 39:23Speaker 4: Near East.
- 39:24Speaker 5: Only this shipment contains a million dollars but of unrefined opium. Well,
- 39:29Speaker 5: let him refine it, let him ship it out with
- 39:31Speaker 5: his artist supplies, and then then I pollwer it million
- 39:35Speaker 5: dollars worth of narcotiction.
- 39:36Speaker 4: All I do is help to see that he gets
- 39:38Speaker 4: safely away. A lot to ask, and yes, Senor elt
- 39:41Speaker 4: to ask.
- 39:45Speaker 5: Berrado worked past Before evening he told me that Anne
- 39:48Speaker 5: Grant had reached Havana with Supan. Two days later, the
- 39:52Speaker 5: Dutch freighter arrived and the bale of camel's hair was
- 39:54Speaker 5: now in Brand's status possession.
- 39:57Speaker 4: At night in my room, yes, where they've just book passage.
- 40:04Speaker 4: You rash letter, missus Grant, and you bet Steve ship
- 40:07Speaker 4: Cardio for New York. The Cardio, Well, there's no ship
- 40:10Speaker 4: on port called the Cardio to ship tomorrow sales attune
- 40:14Speaker 4: the following day. I would have report soon on every
- 40:17Speaker 4: piece of free cheese taking aboard. Good see you here
- 40:19Speaker 4: in the morning. For twenty four hours with our paws,
- 40:27Speaker 4: Berrado and his men checked and rechecked the cargo of
- 40:30Speaker 4: the Cardio.
- 40:31Speaker 5: Absolutely nothing was being shipped by Brand Statu not a
- 40:34Speaker 5: ray of hope until three hours before sailing time, and
- 40:37Speaker 5: then some last minute cargo arrived on the dot part'st
- 40:40Speaker 5: supplies from and Van Stata addressed to a man named
- 40:44Speaker 5: Sharp Maiden Lane, New York. A ray of hope that
- 40:47Speaker 5: made no sense. There wasn't a chance the opium was
- 40:49Speaker 5: in those boxes. The most routine checkup and the New
- 40:52Speaker 5: York customs would reveal it. It was too late now
- 40:54Speaker 5: to do anything but let brands stat to get the
- 40:56Speaker 5: opium on board his own way and take our chances
- 40:58Speaker 5: of finding it.
- 41:00Speaker 4: Right Then a couple of worried men got lucky.
- 41:03Speaker 5: One of Burrado's lookouts on the dock came up a
- 41:05Speaker 5: report of a very ordinary incident. The truck which had
- 41:08Speaker 5: delivered the boxes of artists supplies had stalled on the board,
- 41:12Speaker 5: but the lookout at Nando had been curious, and.
- 41:15Speaker 4: When one of the men worked to remotor, a second
- 41:17Speaker 4: one was tearing the wrappings of some packages near backery trunk.
- 41:20Speaker 4: Where did it stole? Hernando?
- 41:21Speaker 8: Near the kitchen supplies being loaded on the ship, senre
- 41:24Speaker 8: cartoons of butter, And when the rappians came of gunstatus packages,
- 41:28Speaker 8: that's what they were three cartoons of butter, exactly.
- 41:31Speaker 4: Like the others. Now we were getting somewhere. Three cottons
- 41:38Speaker 4: of butter containing a million dollars worth of opium were
- 41:42Speaker 4: stored and the ship's refrigerator where one.
- 41:44Speaker 5: Of ranstatus men, a member of the kitchen crew, could
- 41:47Speaker 5: watch it carefully. An hour before standing time, we saw
- 41:50Speaker 5: them go aboard Missus Grant, Schupin and brand stadd. According
- 41:54Speaker 5: to plan, there would be a vacant cabin for me
- 41:56Speaker 5: on sea deck and waiting for me now posing as
- 41:58Speaker 5: a ship steward, was Lenando Lord.
- 42:02Speaker 4: What a senor.
- 42:02Speaker 3: That refrigerator will be watched constantly from here to New York,
- 42:05Speaker 3: now by whom during nights by the baker, an old
- 42:09Speaker 3: friend of mine, during the day, the ship's butcher, and
- 42:12Speaker 3: the assistant ship.
- 42:13Speaker 4: Where's brands status cabin and the others. On the upper
- 42:16Speaker 4: day senor bed before dinner, Ernando had news for me, Frands,
- 42:21Speaker 4: that there is no longer an bide Senor. He complained
- 42:23Speaker 4: about his cabin. He's taking one right across the corridor
- 42:26Speaker 4: from you, and he knows I'm here. No, I don't
- 42:29Speaker 4: think so. He inquired about all the cabins. I merely
- 42:33Speaker 4: told him this one was vacant. I think he believed me.
- 42:36Speaker 4: He's at dinner now and I'm moving his lugs. Empty
- 42:41Speaker 4: cabins are board yet don't have locked doors. My door
- 42:44Speaker 4: was locked. Sooner or later. Randstadter would have to know why.
- 42:49Speaker 4: Sooner or later. Oh, I beg your pardon.
- 42:56Speaker 8: How stupid of me. Yes, they gave me wrong key.
- 43:01Speaker 8: I simply went to the number like a sheep, being
- 43:04Speaker 8: very sad. I don't believe we have met.
- 43:08Speaker 4: I came aboard ill. Oh, I'm very sorry to hear me.
- 43:12Speaker 4: Please for keeping.
- 43:15Speaker 5: Score for Brandstatter. He'd never stopped now until he knew
- 43:18Speaker 5: exactly who I was.
- 43:19Speaker 4: A good chance I was.
- 43:20Speaker 5: A narcotics agent. An outside chance I'd been on his
- 43:23Speaker 5: trail since China. A million to one shot. Missus Grant
- 43:26Speaker 5: had seen me there, would know who I was. He'd
- 43:29Speaker 5: have to bring Missus Grant.
- 43:30Speaker 4: To see me.
- 43:32Speaker 5: But no move by a brand Statter until the following evening.
- 43:35Speaker 5: You're off Cape Harris, just twenty four hours out of
- 43:38Speaker 5: New York.
- 43:40Speaker 8: I could hear the ship's walkster and the passengers, all
- 43:42Speaker 8: very gay and friendly.
- 43:44Speaker 4: What more perfect time for a man of finesse to
- 43:47Speaker 4: visit a poor shut in, and that's just what happened. Then, Goo,
- 43:54Speaker 4: good evening. We have brought you ay to cheer from
- 43:56Speaker 4: the captain's table. Oh and me, I pretend hello, miss Grant,
- 44:00Speaker 4: you know each other.
- 44:02Speaker 9: Why, yes, mister Brandon, I charming.
- 44:05Speaker 4: We met in Shanghai.
- 44:06Speaker 8: Mister rand you seem to be feeling much better tonight,
- 44:11Speaker 8: much better.
- 44:12Speaker 4: Yes, I'll be up and around tomorrow.
- 44:13Speaker 8: Good well, I really should be going back to the party.
- 44:17Speaker 4: Why don't you say it? Violence is grand. I'm sure
- 44:19Speaker 4: you will have a lot to talk about.
- 44:23Speaker 9: I'm sorry you'll get in.
- 44:25Speaker 4: Just to touch a favor I picked it up in Egypt.
- 44:28Speaker 4: I thought you went to San Francisco.
- 44:30Speaker 9: I did, But is your shoe parents? Uncle mister Sue
- 44:33Speaker 9: had gone to Avan on business.
- 44:35Speaker 4: He insisted that we meet him there, and this grand
- 44:38Speaker 4: Stater ship's acquaintance.
- 44:39Speaker 9: Yes, a business friender mister Sue. He's been very kind
- 44:42Speaker 9: to us.
- 44:43Speaker 4: Oh see, charming fellow. You're looking very well, missus Grant.
- 44:47Speaker 4: Thank you. I feel wonderful, mister Brandt.
- 44:51Speaker 10: Remember the things you said to me in Shanghai. I
- 44:54Speaker 10: mean about coming back to the state. I know now
- 44:57Speaker 10: how right you would.
- 44:58Speaker 4: Oh good? Oh, I don't want to keep you from
- 45:02Speaker 4: the party.
- 45:02Speaker 10: You're sure you can't join us tomorrow? We'll have a
- 45:05Speaker 10: big day tomorrow, all right, Good night, mister Vent.
- 45:09Speaker 5: In the morning I joined Missus, Grant and the others,
- 45:12Speaker 5: a happy, chatty little group inseparable. By lunchtime, Chopan gave
- 45:17Speaker 5: me a little pencil sketch of herself at one of
- 45:19Speaker 5: the passengers had made the artists said there were lines
- 45:22Speaker 5: of suffering in her face in that afternoon, less than
- 45:26Speaker 5: an hour from New York. But nothing was worrying Nicholas
- 45:29Speaker 5: Brand's Stata or and Grant. I couldn't understand it. What
- 45:32Speaker 5: if Brandstada had known who I was long before I
- 45:35Speaker 5: got to Havana and had set me on this false
- 45:37Speaker 5: trail while he got the narcotics on board some other way.
- 45:40Speaker 4: This panic of mine was growing every minute. We were
- 45:43Speaker 4: at the bar now having a drink.
- 45:46Speaker 10: Someone said we'd be taken on the harbor pilots, so
- 45:50Speaker 10: maybe I better take.
- 45:50Speaker 9: Shoe pins, daddy, Oh, not getting to say.
- 45:54Speaker 4: Another drink, mister van Do, I continued French.
- 45:59Speaker 5: Then suddenly there was a motion in the stern, a
- 46:00Speaker 5: flurry of excited voices, and the flayed order of something burning.
- 46:05Speaker 4: Worry about it is a gament, it's a self fall
- 46:08Speaker 4: st trees by the galley.
- 46:11Speaker 9: All right, it's all right here. You heard what the
- 46:13Speaker 9: officers said.
- 46:14Speaker 8: Incidentally, mister Brant, why don't we all have dinner tonight
- 46:17Speaker 8: on show?
- 46:18Speaker 4: Oh could you? Mister b Yes, Persis, I think I could.
- 46:22Speaker 4: But we'll be darking soon. I have a lot of
- 46:24Speaker 4: things to do.
- 46:25Speaker 8: I'd better start by pet Maybe Chupin would like to
- 46:28Speaker 8: watch the seagull see either They are just.
- 46:30Speaker 4: Off the stern, hundreds of them. But what are they
- 46:33Speaker 4: doing having dinner? My dear? The crew is throwing refuse
- 46:36Speaker 4: food over the board. Come let us go and watch.
- 46:39Speaker 4: Oh please missus.
- 46:39Speaker 10: France, Well, Chopin all right for a moment, maybe.
- 46:44Speaker 5: I arrest to find Ernando. That's fire in the galley.
- 46:46Speaker 5: Ernando's words confirmed what I was reading. You hinted during
- 46:50Speaker 5: the fire, where did the stuff go?
- 46:51Speaker 4: What about our men done? Well? There was so much
- 46:53Speaker 4: smoke they could not see. Go back to the galley, Nando,
- 46:56Speaker 4: I'll see what our friends are up to.
- 46:59Speaker 5: And I went out, and I remember passing a lifeboat
- 47:01Speaker 5: and the sudden instinctive mood the ward up the blow,
- 47:04Speaker 5: but I wasn't fast enough.
- 47:06Speaker 13: Oh.
- 47:08Speaker 5: When I came to I was lying in my cabin.
- 47:12Speaker 5: The ship's doctor was there, so was Ernando, so was
- 47:16Speaker 5: Anne Grant.
- 47:17Speaker 4: I'm sure you would be all right, mister brand quite
- 47:19Speaker 4: a bump, but.
- 47:20Speaker 9: If you take it, he's not comfortable. Let me loosen
- 47:22Speaker 9: your collar here.
- 47:23Speaker 4: I wouldn't worry that much about me, Missus Grant.
- 47:26Speaker 6: One of the crew was towing some gear in a lifeboat.
- 47:28Speaker 6: It slipped out of his hands just as you were
- 47:30Speaker 6: passing back.
- 47:31Speaker 4: Careless of him, wasn't it. I was got by lease inst.
- 47:34Speaker 9: Are you sure you're all right?
- 47:36Speaker 4: And you're about to get back to your packing Missus Grant?
- 47:38Speaker 9: Oh, I have plenty of time. Can't I help you?
- 47:40Speaker 4: Ernando can give me a hand. I'll see you later.
- 47:42Speaker 9: Yes, yes, of course, And that she did.
- 47:46Speaker 4: No, No, I wasn't wanted up there, Ernando. What about
- 47:49Speaker 4: the galley still in the place of the drug Sis.
- 47:51Speaker 5: Five twenty five? I left Missus Grant and the lounges
- 47:54Speaker 5: twenty minutes ago. She was going to pack.
- 47:57Speaker 4: How did she get here? How did she learn about it?
- 47:58Speaker 4: I heard some of the past I just mentioned you
- 48:00Speaker 4: at occidents when I started back from the galley. Suddenly
- 48:03Speaker 4: the noose was all over the sheep. Look, look we're
- 48:06Speaker 4: slowing down. That means a pilot is coming aboard. Let's
- 48:08Speaker 4: get down to the galley. We all but tore that
- 48:15Speaker 4: galley a pot.
- 48:16Speaker 5: No sign of the opium. The kitchen crew wasn't of
- 48:19Speaker 5: much help. Half of them couldn't speak English.
- 48:21Speaker 4: I didn't want to.
- 48:22Speaker 5: And then it dawned on me that garbage as it
- 48:25Speaker 5: went over the stern, the fire starting just about that time,
- 48:28Speaker 5: brand stature. Wanting to watch the seagulls, I tore back
- 48:32Speaker 5: up the Companion away from Missus Grant's cabin.
- 48:34Speaker 4: As I reached the deck, Upan called to me, there's
- 48:37Speaker 4: the bread. Oh well, what's the trouble, Supan?
- 48:41Speaker 14: There is no trouble now.
- 48:42Speaker 12: But when I couldn't find you, I was so afraid you.
- 48:46Speaker 9: You just disappeared.
- 48:47Speaker 4: I've been all over the ship looking for you.
- 48:49Speaker 5: Noah, isn't that funny. I was just trying to find you.
- 48:52Speaker 5: I want you to do something for me, Princess. I well,
- 48:56Speaker 5: I like to talk to Anne alone, just for a
- 49:00Speaker 5: few minutes.
- 49:01Speaker 9: You like her, don't you, mister Brandon, Yes.
- 49:04Speaker 5: Yes, I do very much. Oh, mister Bramstadter wanted my
- 49:08Speaker 5: business address. I won't have time to look for him,
- 49:10Speaker 5: so I wrote him a little note. While I'm with Anne,
- 49:13Speaker 5: will you take this cabin?
- 49:15Speaker 9: I'll be glad.
- 49:16Speaker 4: Don't forget come right back here and wait for me.
- 49:19Speaker 4: It was a short note.
- 49:21Speaker 5: The seagulls didn't get everything, did they, But it was
- 49:24Speaker 5: a nice try. I signed my real name, Barrows. I
- 49:28Speaker 5: wanted to be in missus Grant's cabin when bramstead A
- 49:31Speaker 5: read it, well.
- 49:33Speaker 10: Hello, come on in the cabins.
- 49:36Speaker 4: Besides, I just wanted to tell you I won't be
- 49:38Speaker 4: able to have dinner with you and ramstad at tonight.
- 49:40Speaker 4: Oh that's a shade, Yes, sister, so many things I
- 49:43Speaker 4: wanted to ask you.
- 49:44Speaker 10: Well, we'll all meet his ads.
- 49:46Speaker 4: Oh, but some of this can't wait. For instance, about
- 49:50Speaker 4: your past life, my past life, and your husband tell
- 49:54Speaker 4: me about him just like that. Yes, quite a rough story,
- 49:58Speaker 4: wasn't it.
- 50:00Speaker 5: Maybe it wasn't not the last year of it. No, really,
- 50:03Speaker 5: you seem so full of his memory in Shanghai. We're
- 50:06Speaker 5: going to stay in China to finish his work.
- 50:07Speaker 9: His work was something else.
- 50:09Speaker 4: Oh so you approved of that? Huh? An engineer believes
- 50:13Speaker 4: in building something. The point is what you.
- 50:15Speaker 5: Don't at all want to build the same thing. The
- 50:18Speaker 5: Japanese High Command, for instance, they want to build one
- 50:20Speaker 5: kind of world, and I want to build another, meaning
- 50:22Speaker 5: one meaning your husband, your own grant. Why the coincidence
- 50:27Speaker 5: this snapshot.
- 50:28Speaker 4: My picking it up in Egypt?
- 50:29Speaker 9: Where did you get it?
- 50:30Speaker 4: Where you played governess for Benda Shah's children, where your
- 50:34Speaker 4: husband was building better.
- 50:35Speaker 5: Irrigation for better poppies. That was his work, helping to
- 50:39Speaker 5: make a billion slaves of the next generation. I just
- 50:42Speaker 5: want to answer to one question from you.
- 50:45Speaker 4: When you were back at the stern watching the seagulls,
- 50:47Speaker 4: the opium went overboard with the garbage, didn't it, Hides,
- 50:51Speaker 4: And if that's your pal, then I'll know for sure.
- 50:54Speaker 10: Shall I answer it?
- 50:55Speaker 4: Pick up the phone, just say one word hello, and
- 50:57Speaker 4: then give it to me. Hello, grat it's see what
- 51:02Speaker 4: I mean, chopin. I just couldn't wait. Watch everything's going fine, Princess.
- 51:09Speaker 4: You just wait back there? Huh, that wasn't the one,
- 51:13Speaker 4: missus Grant you come in Ernando.
- 51:17Speaker 14: You'd better watch her. He's covered senor study suicide.
- 51:28Speaker 5: The third fanatic who paid for failure, but Bramsteads death
- 51:32Speaker 5: told me many things I wanted to know.
- 51:35Speaker 4: While the ship's.
- 51:36Speaker 5: Captain was fixing the approximate spot where the opium had
- 51:39Speaker 5: been thrown overboard, I was talking about radio to the
- 51:41Speaker 5: coast guard. I asked for boats to meet the Cardio
- 51:44Speaker 5: as fast as they could get to us, said, stuck
- 51:46Speaker 5: with overboard, mister Parros with a happy man. Anyway, a
- 51:50Speaker 5: million dollars in opium at the bottom of the ocean.
- 51:52Speaker 5: But not for long, Captain. The stunt isn't exactly new.
- 51:56Speaker 5: The opium will be in waterproof wrappings and attested to floats.
- 51:59Speaker 5: They'll be ang on ropes chemically treated. The salt water
- 52:02Speaker 5: will gradually eat away the ropes, and the folks will
- 52:05Speaker 5: bring the drugs.
- 52:05Speaker 4: To the surface, and you'll be there to pick it up.
- 52:08Speaker 4: Le's somebody else pieces to it. I'm better stand by,
- 52:10Speaker 4: mister Potters. Those launches will be along the side end
- 52:13Speaker 4: no time.
- 52:17Speaker 5: They sent three launches. I took a grant with me
- 52:20Speaker 5: on shoepan. She wouldn't be separated from her, so.
- 52:22Speaker 4: I let her have a way.
- 52:24Speaker 5: It was ten or twelve miles back to the spot,
- 52:26Speaker 5: and the question was would we make it in time.
- 52:29Speaker 5: The ropes might have broken already to stuff picked up
- 52:32Speaker 5: and the rest of the gene Hawks.
- 52:33Speaker 4: Water about ahead. Miss Barrels, they're fishing something up out
- 52:36Speaker 4: of the water. We don't let them get away. I
- 52:37Speaker 4: want him alive. But if you've got to shoot, and
- 52:41Speaker 4: it's like that sting watching ladies, here we go. It
- 52:48Speaker 4: was on our three boats against their one.
- 52:51Speaker 5: They might have made a run for it, but they
- 52:52Speaker 5: tried to save the opium. A few minutes later they surrendered.
- 52:56Speaker 5: But these were workmen, not leaders. Where was gene Hawks?
- 53:00Speaker 5: I looked at the girl in my launch and I
- 53:02Speaker 5: had the answer. The prisoners went aboard the other boats.
- 53:06Speaker 5: I took the narcotics, and with Missus Grant and Shooppan,
- 53:08Speaker 5: we cut away from the others and headed directly for customs.
- 53:12Speaker 5: There were two coastguardsmen handling the launch. Their backs were
- 53:16Speaker 5: to us. When suddenly get that that's the idea. Princess
- 53:20Speaker 5: put the gun down, tell him to make.
- 53:22Speaker 12: For a point a mile above Conniver.
- 53:24Speaker 4: She grabbed his gun.
- 53:25Speaker 7: That's saying this scuf.
- 53:25Speaker 8: Did you hear what I said?
- 53:27Speaker 5: Better head for shore boys a mile above Cannover Beacon.
- 53:30Speaker 5: That's an order, sir, that's an order never heard of?
- 53:33Speaker 5: Gene Hawks, Missus Grant, Jean Hawks, the name that.
- 53:36Speaker 4: Took those narcotics around the world. Never heard of it?
- 53:40Speaker 4: Huh No, amazing could be our baby faced.
- 53:44Speaker 9: Princess here I am twenty years old.
- 53:47Speaker 4: The Chinese girl for the honor and glory was pan
- 53:50Speaker 4: telling to go faster? The lady says, the speed up skipper.
- 53:54Speaker 4: Oh what are you gonna do? Get this stuff ashore
- 53:57Speaker 4: than what not to kill? The four of us wants you.
- 53:59Speaker 4: That's the same, is it?
- 54:01Speaker 5: Jeene Hawks was doing without batting an eye, and you
- 54:04Speaker 5: had no idea, Missus Grant, No, didn't, even though your
- 54:07Speaker 5: husband was hired by Japan to grow narcotics, and that
- 54:10Speaker 5: you've been chaperoning gene Hawks ever since pan Yan, You,
- 54:14Speaker 5: the respectable widow an American killed.
- 54:16Speaker 4: By Japanese bonds, didn't know that, hunh. Or maybe that
- 54:20Speaker 4: isn't how he died at all. Maybe he knew too
- 54:23Speaker 4: much and wasn't the fanatic he should have been. He wasn't.
- 54:26Speaker 10: Twice you merged, No, you did with notions of helping China,
- 54:30Speaker 10: asking questions.
- 54:31Speaker 9: He was told to get rid of you, but.
- 54:33Speaker 4: He couldn't bring himself to do it. Huh, still had
- 54:35Speaker 4: a little feeling for his wife. That weakness licked him,
- 54:39Speaker 4: didn't it.
- 54:40Speaker 5: Ah, that's the weakness that licked me too, the feeling
- 54:44Speaker 5: I had for a helpless little girl.
- 54:46Speaker 4: Oh, I was a sucker for that, wasn't I? Your
- 54:49Speaker 4: side praised and that kind of thing decent human feeling,
- 54:54Speaker 4: no use for it yourself except the faked.
- 54:57Speaker 5: But I've been learning fast, princess, and I learned that
- 54:59Speaker 5: lessons and time. In fact, I had an idea who
- 55:02Speaker 5: you were when you got in this vote.
- 55:04Speaker 9: Stop lying?
- 55:05Speaker 5: You see after the accident, Missus Grant was standing by
- 55:08Speaker 5: my bed, but not the warm little girl who liked
- 55:11Speaker 5: me so much?
- 55:12Speaker 4: Where was she at the stern watching seagulls? She must
- 55:16Speaker 4: have heard about it at.
- 55:17Speaker 5: The same time Missus Grant did, but made us a
- 55:19Speaker 5: layton coming to find me? And how those lines of
- 55:23Speaker 5: suffering in an artice sketch of a young girl could
- 55:25Speaker 5: be the madness of a grown woman.
- 55:27Speaker 4: But I wasn't sure yet. So the next step was
- 55:29Speaker 4: that note to Brand's stature. When he didn't call Missus
- 55:33Speaker 4: Grant when he killed himself, that could mean you opened the.
- 55:36Speaker 5: Note on the way told brand Stad that he failed
- 55:38Speaker 5: and that his services were no longer required.
- 55:41Speaker 4: See what I mean, Princess, You can't fake.
- 55:44Speaker 5: Real feelings, not for long. They're the exclusive property of
- 55:49Speaker 5: real human beings. Now put on that gun, Come and
- 55:53Speaker 5: take mister Brant.
- 55:55Speaker 4: Yes, yes, I will do. She's kill you. She kill you.
- 56:01Speaker 4: Keep pulling the trigger, Princess not loaded. Oh what a shame.
- 56:06Speaker 4: What do you know, mister berrels your stunt work? Yeah,
- 56:09Speaker 4: what do you know?
- 56:10Speaker 5: Poor little Jean hawks not even one bullet left to
- 56:13Speaker 5: kill herself with tire up on it. That's how and
- 56:21Speaker 5: where the trail ended in Outer New York Harbor off
- 56:24Speaker 5: Carnev a beacon. And that's where another trail began, you
- 56:28Speaker 5: might say, because now.
- 56:29Speaker 4: Back in Frisco, I don't have to worry about my
- 56:32Speaker 4: roses getting watered and does it like any normal life should.

- 1:02:29Speaker 1: with today, not only narcotic smuggling obviously, but you have
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: that whole issue of human trafficking and the whole idea
