- 0:11And Bilbo turned and said it's a dangerous business, Frodo, going
- 0:15out your door, you step onto the road and if you don't keep your
- 0:19feet, there is no knowing where you might be swept off to.
- 0:23Hello friends. Yes, it's Sean here.
- 0:26And today is Wednesday, the 25th of March, which is actually
- 0:32Tolkien Reading Day. This is the day where people all
- 0:36around the world are encouraged to pick up this literary genius
- 0:40and read some of his work. Why the 25th of March?
- 0:44Well, in the modern calendar, this is the day that Sauron was
- 0:48defeated and Middle Earth was saved.
- 0:50Yes, this incredible epic of good versus evil that JRR
- 0:55Tolkien wrote to find a way to express his faith to a broken
- 1:00world that desperately needed it.
- 1:02And if you're listening on Spotify, there's actually an
- 1:04audio book version which will blow your mind waiting for you
- 1:07on Spotify. But that is enough of me
- 1:09plugging someone else's work when we are here to read God's
- 1:13work. Yes, friends, let us continue on
- 1:16this way. We have just read Mark chapter 8
- 1:19where Peter has proclaimed that Jesus is the Messiah.
- 1:23And then straight from there, Jesus begins talking about his
- 1:26own death. And today we're going to see
- 1:28Jesus transfigured, incredible healings, and again, more talk
- 1:33of his death and the Kingdom to come.
- 1:35This is Jesus getting to the heart of it and speaking so
- 1:38clearly to his disciples about what's happening.
- 1:41And friends, that's you and me. We are these disciples.
- 1:44So let us go back in time and through the eyes of Peter live
- 1:48these moments with Jesus as we read together Mark Chapter 9.
- 2:02Jesus went on to say, I tell you the truth, some standing here
- 2:07right now will not die before they see the Kingdom of God
- 2:10arrive in great power. Six days later Jesus took Peter,
- 2:15James and John and LED them up a high mountain to be alone.
- 2:19As the men watched, Jesus appearance was transformed and
- 2:23his clothes became dazzling white, far whiter than any
- 2:27earthly bleach could ever make them.
- 2:29Then Elijah and Moses appeared and began talking with Jesus.
- 2:34Peter exclaimed. Rabbi, it's wonderful for us to
- 2:38be here. Let's make 3 shelters as
- 2:41memorials, one for you, one for Moses and 1:00 for Elijah.
- 2:45He said this because he didn't really know what else to say,
- 2:48for they were all terrified. Then a cloud overshadowed them,
- 2:52and a voice from the cloud said, This is my dearly loved son,
- 2:57listen to him. Suddenly when they looked
- 3:01around, Moses and Elijah were gone, and they saw only Jesus
- 3:06with them. As they went back down the
- 3:08mountain, He told them not to tell anyone about what they had
- 3:11seen until the Son of Man had risen from the dead.
- 3:15So they kept it to themselves, but they often asked each other
- 3:19what he meant by rising from the dead.
- 3:23Then they asked him, why do the teachers of religious law insist
- 3:27that Elijah must return before the Messiah comes?
- 3:31Jesus responded, Elijah is indeed coming 1st to get
- 3:35everything ready. Yet why do the scriptures say
- 3:38that the Son of Man must suffer greatly and be treated with
- 3:42utter contempt? But I tell you, Elijah has
- 3:45already come and they chose to abuse him, just as the
- 3:49scriptures predicted. When they returned to the other
- 3:53disciples, they saw a large crowd surrounding them and some
- 3:57teachers of religious law were arguing with them.
- 4:00When the crowd saw Jesus, they were overwhelmed with awe and
- 4:03they ran to greet him. What is all this arguing about?
- 4:07Jesus asked. One of the men in the crowd
- 4:10spoke up and said, Teacher, I brought my son so you could heal
- 4:14him. He's possessed by an evil spirit
- 4:17that won't let him talk. But whenever this spirit seizes
- 4:20him, it throws him violently to the ground.
- 4:22Then he foams at the mouth and grinds his teeth and becomes
- 4:25rigid. So I asked your disciples to
- 4:28cast out the evil spirit, but they couldn't do it.
- 4:31Jesus said to them, You faithless people, how long must
- 4:36I be with you? How long must I put up with you?
- 4:39Bring the boy to me. So they brought the boy.
- 4:43But when the evil spirit saw Jesus, it threw the child into a
- 4:47violent convulsion, and he fell to the ground, writhing and
- 4:50foaming at the mouth. How long has this been
- 4:53happening? Jesus asked the boy's father.
- 4:56He replied, Since he was a little boy, the Spirit often
- 5:00throws him into the fire or into water, trying to kill him.
- 5:04Have mercy on us and help us if you can.
- 5:07What do you mean if I can? Jesus asked.
- 5:11Anything is possible if a person believes.
- 5:14The Father instantly cried out. I do believe, but help me
- 5:18overcome my unbelief. When Jesus saw that the crowd of
- 5:22onlookers was growing, he rebuked the evil spirit.
- 5:26Listen to you, spirit. That makes this boy unable to
- 5:29hear and speak. He said, I command you to come
- 5:32out of this child and never enter him again.
- 5:36Then the spirit screamed and threw the boy into another
- 5:40Violet convulsion and left him. The boy appeared to be dead.
- 5:45A murmur ran through the crowd as people said, He's dead.
- 5:49But Jesus took him by the hand and helped him to his feet, and
- 5:52he stood up. Afterward, when Jesus was alone
- 5:56in the house with his disciples, they asked him, Why couldn't we
- 5:59cast out that evil spirit? Jesus replied, This kind can be
- 6:04cast out only by prayer, leaving that region that travelled
- 6:10through Galilee. Jesus didn't want anyone to know
- 6:13he was there, for he wanted to spend more time with his
- 6:16disciples and teach them. He said to them, The Son of Man
- 6:20is going to be betrayed into the hands of his enemies.
- 6:24He will be killed, but three days later he will rise from the
- 6:28dead. They didn't understand what he
- 6:31was saying, however, and they were afraid to ask him what he
- 6:34meant. After they arrived at Capernaum
- 6:37and settled in a house, Jesus asked his disciples, what were
- 6:41you discussing out on the road? But they didn't answer because
- 6:44they had been arguing about which of them was the greatest.
- 6:48He sat down, called the 12 disciples over to him and said
- 6:52whoever wants to be first must take last place and be the
- 6:56servant of everyone else. Then he put a little child among
- 7:00them. Taking the child in his arms.
- 7:02He said to them, Anyone who welcomes a little child like
- 7:06this on my behalf welcomes me, and anyone who welcomes me
- 7:10welcomes not only me, but also my father who sent me.
- 7:15John said to Jesus teacher, we saw someone using your name to
- 7:19cast out demons but we told him to stop because he wasn't in our
- 7:23group. Don't stop him.
- 7:26Jesus said No one who performs a miracle in my name will soon be
- 7:30able to speak evil of me. Anyone who is not against us is
- 7:34for us. If anyone gives you even a cup
- 7:38of water because you belong to the Messiah, I tell you the
- 7:41truth. That person will surely be
- 7:43rewarded. But if you cause one of these
- 7:47little ones who trust in me to fall into sin, it would be
- 7:50better for you to be thrown into the sea with a large millstone
- 7:54hung around your neck. If your hand causes you to sin,
- 7:58cut it off. It's better to enter eternal
- 8:00life with only one hand than to go into the unquenchable fires
- 8:04of hell with two hands. If your foot causes you to sin,
- 8:08cut it off. It's better to enter eternal
- 8:11life with only one foot than to be thrown into hell with two
- 8:14feet. And if your eye causes you to
- 8:17sin, gouge it out. It's better to enter the Kingdom
- 8:21of God with only one eye and to have two eyes and be thrown into
- 8:25hell where the maggots never die and the fire never goes out.
- 8:30For everyone will be tested with fire.
- 8:33Salt is good for seasoning, but if it loses its flavour, how do
- 8:38you make it salty again? You must have the qualities of
- 8:41salt among yourselves and live in peace with each other.
- 8:56Our Jesus, help us be your salt. Help us to season this world so
- 9:03that it can have the incredible flavour of your Kingdom.
- 9:07Help us put aside our own selfish ambition, our own ideas
- 9:11and ideals, and help us to focus on you and your Kingdom.
- 9:17Your Kingdom, where things of this world really are not that
- 9:20important. And if something is dragging us
- 9:23away from you, Lord, you tell us to drop it, to walk away from
- 9:27it, and just to come back to you time and time again.
- 9:31Because it's through you that we find eternal life.
- 9:34It's through you that we find forgiveness of our sins.
- 9:37It's through you that we are made right with the Father.
- 9:41And so we come to you, our loving Saviour, arms open wide,
- 9:46use us, transform us, save us. We love you.
- 9:52And we pray all of this in your saving name, Jesus.
- 9:55I'm in.
