- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Malay with Fexingo. I am Lucas. Luna: And I am Luna. Hey everyone. It is good to be here again. Lucas: It really is. We have been doing a lot of question words lately. Luna: Yeah. Asking where things are. Asking who people are. Lucas: Exactly. But knowing where something is does not help if you do not know how to move toward it. Luna: Oh, that makes sense. So today we learn how to tell someone where to go? Lucas: Yes. Today we are learning directions. Specifically, simple movements. Front, back, left, and right. Luna: I love this. This is so practical. If I am lost in Kuala Lumpur, I need this immediately. Lucas: Let us start with the first word. It is very common. Look at your front. Luna: My front? Like, facing forward? Lucas: Yes. The word for front is depan. Listen to me say it. Lucas: Depan. Luna: Depan. Lucas: Good. Now listen closely. Dep-an. It has a soft n sound at the end. Lucas: Depan. Luna: Depan. Okay. Front. That is easy. Lucas: Very easy. Now, let us look behind us. The opposite of front. Luna: Behind? Back? Lucas: Yes. The word is belakang. Let me say it slowly. Lucas: be lak ang. Luna: Belakang. Okay. be lak ang. Lucas: You got it. It sounds a bit like 'background' but without the 'ground'. Just belakang. Lucas: Belakang. Luna: Belakang. Got it. Front and back. Simple enough. Lucas: Now, let us add left and right. These are crucial. Imagine you are standing still. Luna: Okay, I am standing still. Lucas: Look to your left hand side. In Malay, left is kiri. Listen. Lucas: Kiri. Luna: Kiri. K-i-r-i. Like cherry but shorter? Lucas: Exactly like that. Kiri. One syllable. Very crisp. Lucas: Kiri. Luna: Kiri. Okay. And the other side? Lucas: The right side. The word is kanan. Listen carefully. Lucas: Ka-nan. Luna: Kanan. Ka-nan. Like banana without the ba-na? Lucas: yes. Exactly. Kanan. You are picking these up so fast. Luna: Thanks, Lucas. I feel like a robot now. Front, back, left, right. Lucas: A very polite robot. Okay, let us put them together. We will make short sentences. Lucas: To say 'Go to the front', we use the verb pergi. Go is pergi. Luna: Pergi. I remember that from earlier episodes. Lucas: Good. So, Pergi ke depan. To go to the front. Lucas: Pergi ke depan. Luna: Pergi ke depan. Go to the front. I can say that. Lucas: Perfect. Now, let us try looking back. See is lihat. Luna: Lihat. Yeah. To see or to look. Lucas: So, Lihat ke belakang. Look to the back. Lucas: Lihat ke belakang. Luna: Lihat ke belakang. Look behind. Nice. Lucas: Before we go deeper, I want to check in with you all. Learning new vocabulary takes focus. Luna: It does. Especially when you are trying to remember which way is kiri. Lucas: If Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with this language, your support keeps this show ad-free. Luna: Yeah. It allows us to keep making these small, digestible episodes every week. Lucas: If you want to help, you can buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Luna: No pressure at all. But if you can, it means a lot. Thanks, Lucas. Lucas: Of course. Now, back to our directions. Let us practice kiri and kanan in a sentence. Luna: Okay. Turn left? Lucas: Yes. Turn is belok. But we can just use the direction for now. Belok kiri. Turn left. Lucas: Belok kiri. Luna: Belok kiri. Okay. And turn right? Lucas: Belok kanan. Turn right. Lucas: Belok kanan. Luna: Belok kanan. I like this rhythm. Front, back, left, right. Lucas: Let us create a tiny scene. You are giving directions to a friend. Luna: Okay. I am the guide. You are the tourist. Lucas: I am ready. Where do I go? Luna: First, go to the front. Pergi ke depan. Lucas: Pergi ke depan. Okay, I am walking forward. Luna: Then, look behind you. Lihat ke belakang. Lucas: Lihat ke belakang. Okay, I am looking back. Luna: Now, turn left. Belok kiri. Lucas: Belok kiri. I am turning left. Luna: Finally, turn right. Belok kanan. Lucas: Belok kanan. I am turning right. Wow, that was complicated! Luna: maybe a little. But you did it. You followed all the steps. Lucas: I did. Depan, belakang, kiri, kanan. I feel very oriented now. Luna: Let us review the key phrases one more time. Slowly. Lucas: Okay. Front is depan. Luna: Depan. Lucas: Back is belakang. Luna: Belakang. Lucas: Left is kiri. Luna: Kiri. Lucas: Right is kanan. Luna: Kanan. Lucas: And the full phrase: Pergi ke depan. Luna: Pergi ke depan. Lucas: And: Lihat ke belakang. Luna: Lihat ke belakang. Lucas: Great job today, Luna. You gave those directions perfectly. Luna: Thanks, Lucas. I think I could actually find my way around town now. Lucas: I bet you could. Practice these until next time. Luna: See you later. Bye for now.
