After 50 years of shaping young minds, Doane Stuart School in Rensselaer is shutting down this fall—down from 300 students in 2009 to just 40 today. Despite mergers, fundraising, and outreach efforts, declining enrollment and mounting debt have made continuation impossible. Teachers will stay until August, and the campus will be sold to pay off debts, while the Rensselaer City School District will temporarily use it for seventh graders during renovations.
