- YIN: This is Yin. And these are conversations about discipline, direction, and identity and how they quietly shape who you become. Let me ask you something. If someone wanted to control you, what would they have to control? I want you to sit with that question. Would it be your money, your schedule, your reputation, or your comfort? Whatever you just thought of, I want you to remember it. Because we're going to come back to that question. Now let me tell you why I'm asking. I'm not free. Not yet. and honestly, I don't know if anyone ever becomes completely free. But when I sat down to write this episode, I hit a wall almost immediately. Because I couldn't answer the simplest question underneath the confession. What is freedom? Not the word, not the flag, not the feeling, the thing itself. And why do all of us want it before we've ever agreed on what it is? Is freedom money? That's the most common answer. Enough money and nobody can tell you what to do. except I've met plenty of wealthy people who can't sit still for 10 minutes, who check the number before their feet hit the floor, who have everything money buys except a single quiet hour. Money bought them options. It didn't buy them peace. Okay then, is freedom time? Control your schedule. Control your life. Except I've met men with wide open calendars who are ruled by anxiety, by approval, by the fear of losing what they've built. An empty calendar with a loud mind is just a bigger cell. Then is freedom doing whatever you want? No rules, no commitments, answering to no one. Except Look at the person who actually is living that way, drifting, unclaimed, ruled by whatever pulls the hardest that day. Doing whatever you want just means your impulses are in charge. That's not freedom. That's just a different boss. fine then. It's freedom owning a business. Be your own boss. Nobody above you. Well, I can speak on this one personally. You don't stop having something to answer to. The responsibility you accepted begins making demands. The people depending on you, the reputation you built, the life you created. None of those are bad. But they aren't the freedom that most people imagine either. Every definition I reached for broke the same way. And then I remembered something that broke the whole frame. The thing I miss most about being a child isn't having more responsibilities. It's how little of me belonged to everyone else. No money, no business, no say over my own schedule. Every definition I'd built fell apart. Maybe it wasn't because I had freedom. maybe it was because I hadn't spent years handing pieces of it away. So maybe I've been asking the wrong question. I kept asking what freedom lets you do, travel, spend, quit, build. But as a kid, I couldn't do any of that. And I've never been less governed. Maybe Freedom was never about ability. Maybe it's about authority. Not what you can do, but who or what has the power to make your decisions. Somewhere along the way, we start collecting things that quietly begin making our decisions. We don't notice it because they don't arrive all at once. They arrive one reasonable compromise at a time. And that's the dangerous part. Freedom isn't measured by what you can do. it's measured by what can make your decisions. Not what you own, but what holds authority over your decisions. And the moment I saw it that way, I had to ask a harder question. What holds authority over mine? Because here's what I found. The things governing most people don't look like masters. They don't give orders. They don't raise their voice. They just quietly make your decisions and let you take the credit. Because nobody wakes up and decides to surrender their freedom. Nobody says, Today I'm gonna let fear Make my decisions. Today, I'll let comfort decide my future. It happens quietly, one compromise, one excuse, one dependency, until eventually you're living a life that was decided for you. It usually starts with comfort. You see, comfort decides more lives than fear ever will. The routine that numbs you is the same routine that holds you. You're not stuck. You're settled. Comfort never asks you to stop growing. It simply convinces you that there's no more reasons to. And you know the difference. That's why it bothers you. And where comfort can't reach you, fear can. You stayed quiet in the meeting when you knew the plan was wrong. You didn't decide that. Fear decided. You just sat there while it signed your name. Then There's your audience. You laughed at a joke you hated. You deleted the post because of who might see it. You've been managing an audience so long you've had to think hard to remember who you actually are. And the higher you climb, the more it cost the title, the car, the image. You can't step back because stepping back looks like losing. And you're no longer climbing. You're just afraid of what it would look like to fall down. And yes, even success learns to govern you. You see, one day you realize you've stopped building your business and started protecting it. The thing that was supposed to create freedom quietly becomes something that you're afraid to lose. Then comes the obligations. Some obligations you carry on purpose, some just accumulated, and you stop asking which is which. years ago. And underneath all of that is the guilt, the quietest master of them all. It doesn't tell you what to do, it tells you what you owe. and a person who feels permanently in debt will never feel permitted to be free. And notice what I have not named work. Work never governed Anybody. Your dependence did. Whatever you can't function without will always hold authority over you. now, some of you hear all of this and think the answer is to drop everything, cut the obligations, own nothing, carry nothing. But we already broke that definition. The person carrying nothing isn't free. They're simply carrying nothing. And here's the paradox. Responsibility doesn't remove freedom. Some weight is worth carrying. The family, the mission, the words you gave, those are not chains. Those are the reasons that strength matters. Freedom was never about avoiding commitment. Freedom Is remaining yourself while carrying it. the person who carries their family and stays patient under the load. The person who runs a business without becoming its servant, the person who holds responsibility without letting it hold the pin. that person is more free than the one on the beach. Because his decisions are still his, even under the weight. Which brings me back to what I told you at the start. I am not free. Not yet. The hardest part about writing this episode wasn't defining freedom. It was naming the things that still have authority over me. I now know my masters by name. I have an obligation to the business I built, the mortgage, the car payment. And under all of that are the quiet obligations I still have. I'm still proving things to myself. The weight I picked up years ago and still haven't sat down. But here's what changed. I used to think that freedom. was a finish line, a number, a date, a closing. Now I see it as something I buy back one decision at a time. every skill I learn, every decision I make from conviction instead of fear, every promise I keep to myself, every time I choose purpose, over comfort, I'm buying back a little more freedom. And the freedom I'm building isn't just for me. Because the vision was never about just myself. It was for my people owning their time. decisions because they want to. Not because something is making them. Anybody can chase freedom for themselves, but that's just an escape. Building it for your people, that's direction. So let's go back to where we started. If someone wanted to control your life, what would they have to control? Your comfort? Your reputation? Your success? Your fear? Whatever your answer is, don't judge it. Just notice it. Because freedom isn't lost when someone takes it. Freedom is lost when something else starts making your decisions. And most of the time, you don't even notice it when it happens. Maybe freedom isn't a destination. Maybe it's the lifelong process of taking your decisions back. Because every decision you reclaim is one less decision made by fear. One less decision made by comfort. One less decision made by something that was never supposed to lead your life. And eventually, your life becomes the sum of all of those reclaimed decisions. That's why freedom isn't found. It's built. This is yin. If this resonated, share it with someone who needs to hear it. Not everyone, just someone who's ready.
