- 0:01Welcome to extra Innings on the sports card clubhouse with the
- 0:05hit list. I'm Jake and that is Matt from
- 0:08Providence. This has been it's been hello.
- 0:12It's been a while since our last.
- 0:14Last. Last time we recorded one of
- 0:17these was when we were at your house and that was in the can
- 0:21because we get, we got bumped for the for.
- 0:26The odd the. The Odd Couple you know, it's
- 0:28funny we we're, we're in a we're in a group chat now with those
- 0:32guys and you you called it the you named the group chat the odd
- 0:36list which the. Odd list.
- 0:38That's right. Yeah, it's great.
- 0:41So, so, yeah, we haven't done this in a bit.
- 0:42And so it's good to be back. It's good to be back on the old
- 0:45clubhouse. It's about time.
- 0:49Greg, Greg, Mike, Adam. They haven't.
- 0:51They haven't gotten rid of us yet.
- 0:52Not yet. Not yet.
- 0:54So if you listen to the hit list this week, which we recorded
- 1:01earlier today on Tuesday, there was a discussion that we had
- 1:07about a, a situation at the Shriners, the fall Shriners show
- 1:11or this party, the spring Shriners show a couple weeks ago
- 1:14here in the Boston area where a, a customer who had bought a card
- 1:19from Matt had sent the, IT was a 57 tops Ted Williams.
- 1:25It was in rough shape. They had the individual had sent
- 1:29the card. Listen, listen, listen.
- 1:32Rough shape is an understatement.
- 1:34OK, it was a beater beat. Beaters look at this card and
- 1:37go, wow, that's a beater. It was a beater.
- 1:42It was. Filler it was filler it.
- 1:44Was filler. So this individual sent the card
- 1:48off to PSA. The card came back.
- 1:51They did not hold her it, it came back as altered.
- 1:55Now we don't really know the details on this.
- 1:58Did he forget to check the box to, to have it slabbed even if
- 2:02it was altered? I don't know.
- 2:04But this individual came, brought the card back to Matt
- 2:07and basically asked for a refund for the card.
- 2:10And Matt obliged and we had, and so we had a conversation about
- 2:14that specific scenario. And we don't, we don't have to
- 2:17rehash that necessarily, but this situation brought up a, a
- 2:23controversial possibility of something that could happen in
- 2:26your mind, Matt. So why don't you explain what
- 2:28that is? Well, I think it could be a
- 2:30problem for a lot of people, potentially dealers only if they
- 2:36are honorable guys, right. So if you sell, if I sell a
- 2:41rock, a higher end rock hard and it comes back trimmed, you know,
- 2:45generally I'll take it back, you know, some kind of a refund or
- 2:49trade value refund. It really depends on the
- 2:51situation, I guess. So far it's happened once and I
- 2:54gave the guy a full refund. He I offered him a full cash
- 2:58refund and he said I'd just like start credit.
- 3:00And I said that's fine, obviously.
- 3:02And now this guy comes back. And so now the card that I had
- 3:05the problem with the trim card was a 54 K line rookie card.
- 3:08So I think it was a $500 card, no problem for refund.
- 3:12This guy $100 or so Ted Williams card problem, because it's not
- 3:18about the money, it's about what's right and wrong.
- 3:21That's how I try to run my business.
- 3:23And that card, it just wasn't gradable, you know, And did he
- 3:28try to clean the card and they caught the cleaning?
- 3:32Because it's just, I mean, it's creased up.
- 3:33It's, it's a real, real beater. So like, did he press it?
- 3:36Did he try to get the crease? Like I, I, I don't know, but it,
- 3:39it just opens up an interesting problem for me because I might
- 3:43sell a card raw guy might send it out, might pretend to send it
- 3:48out for grading, wait six months, come back to me 3
- 3:53months, whatever. Come back to me and say, hey,
- 3:55Matt, this card's trimmed. And he may have actually just
- 3:58had that card trimmed at home and waited to find a relatively
- 4:02similar copy and then return me the trimmed copy.
- 4:05That, you know, that potential problem for me, I don't know how
- 4:09I can address it to put a time limit on returning a trimmed
- 4:14card or something like that. I really don't know.
- 4:16But it's nefarious business sometimes and there's nefarious
- 4:19people out there. So yeah, it's just something
- 4:21that popped in my head as we were talking about this.
- 4:22And the other thing too with, with cleaning of cards, you
- 4:25know, if you buy a, a, a car that needs, needs some cleaning
- 4:28that you plan on cleaning and then sending it out for grading,
- 4:33well, they're catching the cleaners now.
- 4:35So you're going to say it's authentic altered send and then
- 4:38bring it to me and say, hey, Matt, you sold me a car that was
- 4:40altered, might not have been altered until you got your hands
- 4:43on it, the situation. So I don't know.
- 4:46I don't know how we're going to handle that going forward.
- 4:48That's a problem. It's a real, real problem,
- 4:49particularly if you really want to run your business the right
- 4:51way, you're going to run into problems like that.
- 4:55I don't know. So.
- 4:58So it's on. It's on.
- 4:59You hear other people's point of view on this.
- 5:01Yeah, Yeah. So I think that we've always
- 5:05talked here about buyer beware that you are you're buying, we
- 5:09are buying artifacts that have changed hands most likely
- 5:13they've changed hands a lot of times over the years.
- 5:15Potentially, maybe something's been in a in a collection since
- 5:191957 and it hasn't hasn't Maybe it was sold to you and then from
- 5:24from someone's collection and then it but odds.
- 5:27Who? I could have been the second
- 5:28owner? I could have been the second
- 5:29owner. It's you could have played pitch
- 5:32with it for five years and then put it away and it looked like
- 5:36that. So we, but we see this all the
- 5:38time, though I also feel like where somebody will have a card
- 5:43in their collection in or in a collection for 60 plus years, 70
- 5:47years and they send it to get graded and it comes back
- 5:51authentic or it it doesn't get a number grade that.
- 5:54Happens. Time and has nothing and this
- 5:58and the and the and somebody says this was in my this was in
- 6:01a a a shoe box in my grandfather's closet for 60
- 6:06years you're telling me the card comes back authentic.
- 6:08It hasn't been touched. That's just what happens.
- 6:11It's the natural. It's could just be in the air or
- 6:14it was or you said pressed. It could have been like, you
- 6:17know, everything could have been compressed really close together
- 6:20or it could have been in a screw down for all a screw.
- 6:22Down a screw down. Absolutely.
- 6:24We know that it could have been in a book.
- 6:25It could have been in a book and pressed by accident.
- 6:27What I'm saying is somebody could have started a book.
- 6:29You throw it on top, a bunch of books on top of that book, or,
- 6:31you know, 60 years later it's pressed.
- 6:34So I just my, my take is, is that if somebody goes to the
- 6:38trouble, if somebody buys a card from you and they go to the to
- 6:40the trouble of measuring it and they say this is this is short.
- 6:46Now, it could be one of two things.
- 6:47Obviously. It could be that it was trimmed,
- 6:50or it could just be that it was factory short.
- 6:52It was minimum. Size.
- 6:55Either could either way could happen and and they come to you
- 6:59and they show you that and the and maybe their their
- 7:02assumption. I think that if you buy a raw
- 7:04card, you, you as a, a buyer can sort of reasonably assume that
- 7:11you, that the card measures. OK.
- 7:13Now that's not on the, I don't necessarily think, again, we're
- 7:16talking about artifacts. I don't think that's your fault
- 7:18as a seller if the card does come back that it's short like,
- 7:23but but you so you as you have to decide as a dealer what's the
- 7:27right thing to do. And I think in the scenario
- 7:29you've talked about and other things just yeah, in that
- 7:32situation, do whatever will make the buyer happy, OK?
- 7:35Because it's again, it's not, there's no culpability on your
- 7:38part necessarily that kind of thing.
- 7:40But yes, this, this other scenario that came up recently
- 7:43is, is a very different scenario where I think that it's, it is.
- 7:48I don't think that there's, it's not, I think it's not your
- 7:52problem necessarily. It's not your especially since
- 7:55a, a third party grading company rendered an opinion about the
- 7:58card and that opinion was that it was altered and we're not and
- 8:02we're not going to slab it now the not slabbing it part again.
- 8:05I think that might have been user error on the part of the,
- 8:08on the individual who submitted the card to be graded.
- 8:11But I, yeah, it's, I think that that is where it gets, it gets a
- 8:15lot trickier. And I think you are, you have
- 8:19less of an obligation as a seller in that situation to to
- 8:24try like, you know, you're like you're trying to run a business.
- 8:27You want to make customers happy.
- 8:29There's a lot of other dealers out there that are like that
- 8:32don't really care. They don't either they don't,
- 8:34they don't care about having repeat customers or, or
- 8:37continued business. They don't maybe you know,
- 8:40they're not in it for that, but but I think for so for you, I
- 8:45think I understood you were trying to make that customer
- 8:47happy. But I, I think that that we have
- 8:50it goes back to this whole thing.
- 8:51We've ceded so much power to the grading companies and somebody
- 8:54gets a card back that just says authentic or it comes back as
- 8:58altered. And we just, we don't know what
- 9:01that means. That could mean anything.
- 9:03It could mean that it was trimmed.
- 9:05It could mean that it was so beat up that it didn't like, you
- 9:07know, I, we've, I've mentioned this before about my, the Joe
- 9:10Medwick card from the 38 Gaudi heads up set that I have that
- 9:13SGC refused to grade. And I, and I get why they
- 9:16refused to, why they refused to hold her.
- 9:18It, it came back, it was authentic, but they said do not
- 9:21hold her. And I understand why because it
- 9:22was the card was like ripped and it was like basically it was
- 9:27like ripped on both sides and was kind of held together in the
- 9:29middle a little bit. So I understand why.
- 9:32I understand they don't want to destroy the card.
- 9:33Like I, I think I kind of understand that dude, they don't
- 9:35want to destroy it further than already it was destroyed.
- 9:40So yeah, I'm curious if people on YouTube or in the comments
- 9:43other places let us let us know what you think about about this
- 9:46whole thing is that there's there's, I just think there's
- 9:49there's too much ambiguity from the grading companies and
- 9:51there's too much of A possibility of people doing
- 9:54nefarious things with cards while they have it in their
- 9:57possession. I got to tell you though, if
- 9:58you're buying a, if you're buying a, a card like that, that
- 10:02looks like it's, you know, fresh out of a pack and it's sharp as
- 10:06a tack or you better assume that it's trimmed when you're buying
- 10:10it. I mean, you really should, you
- 10:12really should go into a pessimistic I, I'm sorry to say
- 10:14that, but you really should, you really should know.
- 10:17OK, I'm just getting a copy. It looks like a nice copy.
- 10:20It's real, it's authentic, probably trimmed.
- 10:22Just I, I really would go into it.
- 10:24A 5060 card, big card like that, 500 dollars, $400.00 whatever it
- 10:29is I would assume. It's trimmed, I agree 100%.
- 10:32It's not a, it's not 100% trimmed.
- 10:34They might not even be if I don't know what the number is.
- 10:38Right. And it's like how?
- 10:39Many people aren't going to give you money back.
- 10:43Most people are not going to give you money back.
- 10:45You know, let me actually, this is funny.
- 10:47I'm going to I'm going to get up for a second just to to grab
- 10:49something. And for the YouTube audience,
- 10:51they're not going to see anything.
- 10:52But for the people listening, it's not going to matter.
- 10:55I got to find this. Where is it?
- 10:58It's right here. Like this is this is the thing
- 11:02as Matt shows a card this I've never actually used this, but
- 11:05this is I bought this a while ago.
- 11:07This is like the. It's like the measuring chart.
- 11:12Where did you get that Amazon? I must have bought on Amazon a
- 11:15couple years ago. Like I said, I've never actually
- 11:16used it. But like this is the thing that
- 11:19like, well, First off, it like tells you the percentages like
- 11:23like, you know, the the centering percentages like for
- 11:27centering. And then this is like the thing
- 11:29that it's like a transparent thing.
- 11:31So you can't really see it, but it's just it will it will tell
- 11:34you if it, you know, measures correctly or not.
- 11:38Actually, that one was centimeters.
- 11:39This is this one is inches. So this is you can.
- 11:42So is this the type of thing that people should walk around
- 11:46with? I I'm.
- 11:47Going to order one tonight and put it in the my supply bin.
- 11:54Yeah, your supply bin. Well, yeah, you, you.
- 11:56Got I love that bin by the way. I got all kinds of tools and
- 11:59stuff in there. Got everything in there.
- 12:00It's like it's. Army night, all kinds of bags
- 12:03and stickers and sleeves and. I personally like, so there was
- 12:07a lot of at Strongsville. There was a ton of of high end
- 12:12raw stuff and I don't know, man, like I feel like so there's
- 12:18certain dealers like I Bill Chappell, who is a a phenomenal
- 12:23vintage dealer and always has really interesting stuff.
- 12:26He always has a lot of raw stuff.
- 12:27He had a whole stack of raw E250 threes like the Oxford
- 12:33confectionery 1950 ones. I love that set And I thought he
- 12:37had the he had the price stuff fairly, the the stuff priced
- 12:41fairly. I thought I just have a hard
- 12:43time. I feel like there's a limit for
- 12:46how much I would spend on a raw card.
- 12:48Like I don't know. I don't know that I'd spend more
- 12:50than more than a few 100 bucks. I just.
- 12:54I'm afraid. Well, because of what you what
- 12:57you're talking. Well, not and again, I'm I'm not
- 12:59doubting. You if it's from a.
- 13:00If it's from a legit dealer, what's the big deal?
- 13:05I just, I don't know, I have a thing about it.
- 13:06I don't know because again, because so much of the value is
- 13:08based off of what what a card would would grade and.
- 13:12Yeah, but you're assuming it's trimmed.
- 13:15Yeah, exactly. So yeah, you so.
- 13:17Like I'll buy I will buy a 51 Bowman mantle raw but I'm paying
- 13:24authentic altered prices. Yeah, right.
- 13:29Right. I'll give you, I can say I
- 13:31should be able to smell if it's fake or not quite literally.
- 13:35And then and then that's it. I assume it's a one or an or an
- 13:39A because I dress no one in this industry.
- 13:42There was a guy who's a, a pretty who I've, I've never
- 13:44bought from him. I've had conversations with him.
- 13:46He's like a pretty reputable seller on Facebook.
- 13:48I think he has a, he has an eBay store too.
- 13:50He's been, I think it was on consignment.
- 13:52So I don't know how much he would move on prices.
- 13:54But on Facebook this guy was has been selling a bunch of raw pre
- 13:58war stuff and he had a raw T2O7 speaker and a raw T2O7 Joe Wood
- 14:06and he wanted I think 15. 100 for the speaker and 1000 for the
- 14:11wood I. Know So you saw this guy.
- 14:12Yeah, you wouldn't take 22 from me.
- 14:14Oh, you, you. So you already know about this
- 14:16guy? Yeah.
- 14:16Come on, 'cause I like it. He said it was.
- 14:19He said it was on consignment, So maybe he didn't.
- 14:21He couldn't have. Maybe he couldn't move as much.
- 14:23But yeah, you. So you did see that.
- 14:25Yeah, I know that guy. Is he?
- 14:26Isn't no so the the oh buddy on Instagram T2O6 kid Fenway.
- 14:33He changed his name, the. Fenway fines.
- 14:34He changed the Fenway fines. He he's the one that put me on
- 14:38it. And yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 14:40So you. So you had that I, I should have
- 14:42known that you knew about that you because I saw that and I was
- 14:44going to, I was going to tell you too, but I was just like,
- 14:47you might not even be in, but but so you so you wouldn't have
- 14:50a, you wouldn't have qualms about spending that much on raw
- 14:53stuff like that, even even just buying, even buying it on on
- 14:57like through Facebook. Well, it's an irreparable
- 14:59seller, so if there's a if it comes back not real, he's going
- 15:03to have a problem. So.
- 15:04Yeah, 'cause that guy is, he has a, he has, he has an eBay store.
- 15:07That I'm sure it's legit from. My end.
- 15:09Stuff so guys aren't going to ruin their reputation of a
- 15:11$2500. Yeah.
- 15:14But I but yeah, there was, there was a lot of high end raw stuff
- 15:17in the room at Strongsville and I just knew.
- 15:21No, Yeah, yeah, pay, pay. 5060 Raw, and it's in the same
- 15:25showcase it was for the last 10 years.
- 15:29You know what I'm talking about. You know what I'm talking about.
- 15:32All right, all right. Well, we got 15 minutes out of
- 15:34this. I can't believe we got 15
- 15:35minutes out of that. Hey, I we're professionals.
- 15:37I told you this. You are.
- 15:39All right. I'm just.
- 15:39Telling you your coattails, buddy.
- 15:42Wow. How about that?
- 15:43It's nice to hear. After after 10:00 PM, the
- 15:46compliments come out. That's it.
- 15:49All right, that's it. What do you say, Matt?
- 15:51Like, comment, subscribe but to our channel also and collect
- 15:57what are we collecting?
