- 1:58Speaker 5: five zero zero. Let's welcome to the show. Now, the
- 2:01Speaker 5: former mayor of Charleston about to be best selling author. Uh,
- 2:05Speaker 5: Danny Jones.
- 2:06Speaker 3: I used to come in every day, you did.
- 2:09Speaker 5: I remember I listened every day.
- 2:12Speaker 6: You know when I When I did that, Rod said
- 2:14Speaker 6: to me, he said, let me get this straight. We
- 2:20Speaker 6: do everything we can to protect you from extraneous phone calls,
- 2:26Speaker 6: and now you're going to subject yourself to them wide open, right.
- 2:31Speaker 6: And I never I never had any problem, and I
- 2:34Speaker 6: used to I take my phone calls.
- 2:36Speaker 5: Well, here's the problem. I have seen Danny a lot.
- 2:39Speaker 5: And it doesn't matter whether it's you know you or
- 2:42Speaker 5: anybody else. There's a lot of people that will get
- 2:45Speaker 5: that that, you know, keyboard commandos that will go online
- 2:50Speaker 5: and say things. It doesn't matter who the politician is.
- 2:53Speaker 5: It could be any political person. But when they get
- 2:55Speaker 5: an opportunity to actually be constructive, you know, I offer
- 2:58Speaker 5: some constructive criticism. A lot of times they don't. And
- 3:02Speaker 5: that's what I have found again with with a lot
- 3:05Speaker 5: of political people. And it's not their fault. I'm just
- 3:07Speaker 5: saying that people would rather go on and put something
- 3:09Speaker 5: on Twitter, Facebook or whatever, as opposed to saying, okay,
- 3:12Speaker 5: I've got this issue, and it's usually the most venomous
- 3:16Speaker 5: type things. It's not, Hey, we've got a pothole over
- 3:19Speaker 5: on so and so can you check on it. That's
- 3:21Speaker 5: that that happens. But a lot of times it's people
- 3:24Speaker 5: who want to, you know, really question their their political
- 3:28Speaker 5: but they they're questioning them as a person. They don't
- 3:31Speaker 5: like them personally, but they'd rather post it as opposed
- 3:34Speaker 5: to Colin and saying, okay, here's the problem. So that
- 3:36Speaker 5: happens a lot again.
- 3:37Speaker 6: Because they don't have a problem. They don't have a problem.
- 3:41Speaker 6: They don't like the person, right, they didn't like they
- 3:44Speaker 6: don't like her, they didn't like me, something like.
- 3:47Speaker 5: That, speaking of not liking you. I'm kidding. I'm kidding.
- 3:51Speaker 5: There was and I don't have it with me right now,
- 3:54Speaker 5: but there was uh an article uh in the paper
- 3:59Speaker 5: colin column on set yeah, column on the iPad pageons
- 4:03Speaker 5: on Saturday, and it had to do with harm reduction.
- 4:07Speaker 5: And that's one of the things you said that you're
- 4:09Speaker 5: going to talk about it, you know, in your book,
- 4:11Speaker 5: which we'll get to a little bit later on, but
- 4:14Speaker 5: in your time as mayor, that was one of the
- 4:16Speaker 5: if you had to, I had to narrow it down
- 4:18Speaker 5: to like three or four big stories. That was it
- 4:22Speaker 5: was at least in the top five. Yeah, and uh,
- 4:25Speaker 5: and your your your take on because you were very
- 4:28Speaker 5: opinionated about about.
- 4:30Speaker 6: Well, we we proved it was a fraud. It was
- 4:35Speaker 6: supposed to have. The President's Council got up. He was
- 4:39Speaker 6: for it, and of course he didn't live where the
- 4:42Speaker 6: needles would arrive. The people that were for it didn't
- 4:45Speaker 6: live where the needles were turned up. They didn't turn
- 4:48Speaker 6: up in their driveways. But you held up an application,
- 4:52Speaker 6: had to fill up. But we proved that was a fraud.
- 4:55Speaker 6: We didn't undercover a thing, no application, no needles to return.
- 5:00Speaker 6: There's forty needles, and we shut it down.
- 5:02Speaker 5: See, I said, I refer to we were talking off
- 5:05Speaker 5: air and I asked you if you'd read the column
- 5:08Speaker 5: from Joe Solomon, and I said, I called it needle
- 5:12Speaker 5: the needle exchange, And you quickly jumped in and said
- 5:14Speaker 5: it was not an exchange.
- 5:15Speaker 3: There's a mill. It's a needle mill. It was.
- 5:19Speaker 6: There is a needle exchange. It's down at Health Right.
- 5:23Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 5:24Speaker 6: And health Right treat these people as patients and if
- 5:30Speaker 6: you come in, you're tested.
- 5:33Speaker 3: First thing.
- 5:33Speaker 6: You fill out all kinds of forms because they're going
- 5:37Speaker 6: to find out if they can get any money, Medicaid
- 5:40Speaker 6: or any kind of money to help finance what they're
- 5:43Speaker 6: trying to do, which is pretty smart. And the second
- 5:48Speaker 6: thing is is that they're going to treat you as
- 5:53Speaker 6: a patient. And a third of the people that use
- 5:57Speaker 6: their facility go into treatment where there's no record of
- 6:03Speaker 6: anybody that went down to the needle mill down at
- 6:07Speaker 6: Canel Charleston Health Department.
- 6:10Speaker 3: None of them.
- 6:12Speaker 6: Well, number one, we're tested before they went in there.
- 6:15Speaker 6: They don't know if they stopped any HIV or FC
- 6:20Speaker 6: or not because they didn't test them before they went
- 6:22Speaker 6: in there.
- 6:23Speaker 3: They just gave him.
- 6:24Speaker 6: Needles where it's it's the opposite down at health.
- 6:30Speaker 5: Right, there would be those and play devil's advocate here.
- 6:33Speaker 5: I have made my opinions on this very well known. Uh. Anybody.
- 6:38Speaker 5: Sometimes we'll have somebody that'll text the show and they
- 6:40Speaker 5: also think I'm too liberal on things. You don't want
- 6:43Speaker 5: my opinion on things like this, if you think I'm
- 6:44Speaker 5: too liberal on anything.
- 6:46Speaker 3: Uh.
- 6:46Speaker 5: But there are people that would say, well, we have
- 6:51Speaker 5: to save lives and uh, and it does and if
- 6:54Speaker 5: we can save a life, we'll save a life. And
- 6:56Speaker 5: to that you would, you know, no questions whatever you
- 6:58Speaker 5: would say, what.
- 6:59Speaker 3: Give them the dope.
- 7:02Speaker 5: Just give it to them, Give them the dope.
- 7:04Speaker 6: Yeah, just give them. It makes more sense. It takes
- 7:10Speaker 6: the criminal element out of it, and you could put
- 7:17Speaker 6: sanctions against them, you'd take away the driver's license.
- 7:20Speaker 5: I mean that this is something. This had to be
- 7:22Speaker 5: changed in code. You can't just be I understand that.
- 7:25Speaker 7: I mean, and that's not going to happen in West Virginia.
- 7:26Speaker 7: If you're going to do a needle exchange, you do.
- 7:29Speaker 7: It's the way they're doing health right, not the way
- 7:31Speaker 7: they were doing it down here any given Wednesday, and
- 7:34Speaker 7: they might give out twelve thousand needles. They didn't test
- 7:38Speaker 7: one person before it went in. We documented all this
- 7:42Speaker 7: and it's in the book.
- 7:43Speaker 5: It's in the book.
- 7:44Speaker 3: Oh, it'll be in the book.
- 7:45Speaker 5: When we had you on, you know in the last
- 7:47Speaker 5: couple of weeks, you said that was going to take
- 7:49Speaker 5: up a lot of the book.
- 7:50Speaker 3: Was there, Well, it's taking up too much of the book.
- 7:52Speaker 6: Okay, it's it's it's it's it took up too much
- 7:58Speaker 6: of the book. You had one person who's all for it,
- 8:02Speaker 6: and then you had jb Acres, who who shoots it,
- 8:07Speaker 6: shoots it all down because he did. He did FOI
- 8:11Speaker 6: s he did everything. He documented the thing was a fraud,
- 8:16Speaker 6: and it was a brummage and the doctor, and it
- 8:21Speaker 6: was just one big mistake.
- 8:24Speaker 5: Was there any regrets from you as far as mayor
- 8:26Speaker 5: for the way you handle the whole thing?
- 8:28Speaker 2: Sure?
- 8:29Speaker 6: Because I voted for it to begin with. I thought
- 8:32Speaker 6: they were going to give away one hundred meters a week.
- 8:34Speaker 6: I didn't know they were going to give away thousands.
- 8:38Speaker 6: But the people that wanted it first thing that it
- 8:42Speaker 6: was personal. They were against me and the people that
- 8:48Speaker 6: wanted it.
- 8:50Speaker 3: It didn't reach their driveways.
- 8:54Speaker 6: And they just wanted to beat me and and they
- 9:02Speaker 6: like brummage the doctor. And but we proved the thing
- 9:07Speaker 6: was a fraud.
- 9:09Speaker 5: So you actually did undercover. I mean not you, but
- 9:12Speaker 5: you said under and.
- 9:13Speaker 3: I didn't know they were going to do it, right, Yeah,
- 9:16Speaker 3: Chief Cooper.
- 9:17Speaker 5: Do you talk about that in the book a little
- 9:19Speaker 5: bit about the undercover work.
- 9:21Speaker 3: I don't remember, Okay, I don't know it to read
- 9:24Speaker 3: the book.
- 9:25Speaker 5: But Dave Ali showing five eighty Live is brought to
- 9:26Speaker 5: you part by Pinnacle Consultants. Pour Indoor air quality can
- 9:30Speaker 5: cause a variety of health issues. Allergies, respiratory probably is more.
- 9:32Speaker 5: Pinnacle offer specialized indoor air quality services for residential and
- 9:36Speaker 5: commercial and industrial type settings. Check out Pinnacle Corp dot net.
- 9:39Speaker 5: Because what you don't know can't hurt you.
- 9:41Speaker 6: They wanted to take the abortion building down there on
- 9:46Speaker 6: the west side, you know that that building, and some
- 9:50Speaker 6: people came in here and wanted to turn that into
- 9:54Speaker 6: a needle mill. They wanted to do a needle exchange
- 9:58Speaker 6: so called exchange right there, and the council voted it down,
- 10:03Speaker 6: Thank goodness.
- 10:05Speaker 5: I just and I am not somebody will point out
- 10:08Speaker 5: and say, well, you know where is your doctorate from?
- 10:10Speaker 5: And I don't have one, or anything like that. I
- 10:12Speaker 5: am just not of the thought process, Danny, that continuing
- 10:18Speaker 5: that sort of behavior and aiding that sort of behavior
- 10:21Speaker 5: is going to help anything. Now you can come up
- 10:23Speaker 5: with studies that will say it helps. You can come
- 10:25Speaker 5: out with studies that say it doesn't help it.
- 10:27Speaker 3: I mean, if you.
- 10:28Speaker 6: Do it the way, if you do it the way
- 10:29Speaker 6: they do it down at health right, it helps. And
- 10:34Speaker 6: they if they take thirty nagels, they have to bring
- 10:36Speaker 6: thirty back and a third of them go into treatment,
- 10:42Speaker 6: a third right where there's no documented evidence of anybody
- 10:48Speaker 6: at this mill down at Canal Charleston Health Department went
- 10:53Speaker 6: into treatment or we're tested before they went in. And
- 10:56Speaker 6: that's a big quantifier because you're not tested before you
- 11:01Speaker 6: go in. How do you know if you're preventing anything.
- 11:05Speaker 6: How do you know if you're.
- 11:06Speaker 5: Preventing at a mindset I think from a lot of
- 11:08Speaker 5: the people that are for these things across the country,
- 11:10Speaker 5: a lot of the mindset Danny is as well, they're
- 11:12Speaker 5: going to do it anyway, so do drugs and we
- 11:17Speaker 5: need to make it safer. That's the mindset a lot.
- 11:20Speaker 6: Well, they can go down to they can go down
- 11:24Speaker 6: to health right, but there's other ways to do heroin.
- 11:32Speaker 6: I'm even smoke caroin ners. But and you can buy needles.
- 11:40Speaker 6: You can buy them in the store. Yeah, So I
- 11:44Speaker 6: don't think it. I don't know the way that one
- 11:47Speaker 6: was operated. And thank goodness, Counsel voted down under mayor
- 11:53Speaker 6: good one they voted.
- 11:55Speaker 5: So, so what's the latest on the book? What are
- 11:58Speaker 5: we looking at? As far as I.
- 12:00Speaker 6: Don't know, we were Charlie called me last night. We're
- 12:05Speaker 6: looking at the earliest November first and maybe the middle
- 12:10Speaker 6: of November.
- 12:11Speaker 5: Got to get it in time for Christmas.
- 12:13Speaker 3: Well, I said, Charlie, hope somebody buys this.
- 12:17Speaker 5: I don't think you're gonna have to worry about people
- 12:19Speaker 5: buying your books.
- 12:20Speaker 3: Well, you don't know.
- 12:21Speaker 5: I mean, it's a crapshoot, I know, but you're gonna
- 12:23Speaker 5: have people buy the book. I mean, trust me. I
- 12:25Speaker 5: mean I'm even going to buy one.
- 12:27Speaker 6: You don't know, though, David. You don't know if people
- 12:30Speaker 6: are gonna.
- 12:31Speaker 5: They'll buy the book.
- 12:32Speaker 6: Trust It's a book we've done the most expensive way,
- 12:35Speaker 6: in the hardback, with with flaps, with the cover, the
- 12:41Speaker 6: pictures are in color. It's it's it's done the right way.
- 12:46Speaker 5: It's not like a church cookbook or something. You're just
- 12:48Speaker 5: the right way it's going to be.
- 12:50Speaker 6: And if we had to stop and it was your fault,
- 12:52Speaker 6: we stopped.
- 12:55Speaker 5: My fault.
- 12:56Speaker 6: You said to me, are you going to put the
- 12:58Speaker 6: recipes in all in the book? And I said, we'll
- 13:02Speaker 6: do that in the next book. And I got home
- 13:04Speaker 6: and called Charlie. I said, Charlie, let's do a second book.
- 13:10Speaker 6: But we got to stop this or we're never going
- 13:12Speaker 6: to stop it. Right, Yeah, So we did.
- 13:14Speaker 5: Okay, speaking of the restaurant, I can tell you a
- 13:16Speaker 5: quick story before we go to break. Semi funny story here.
- 13:20Speaker 5: Apparently not everyone got the message that you had closed
- 13:24Speaker 5: the restaurant. Uh last week one ye, Tuesday, Wednesday, something
- 13:29Speaker 5: like that. Last week I get a text Maaron Parker
- 13:32Speaker 5: from her news team up here, and uh, he said
- 13:36Speaker 5: that some people called the newsroom because they were trying
- 13:40Speaker 5: to call and there was no answer down there, and
- 13:42Speaker 5: they wanted to know if the phone was out. So,
- 13:45Speaker 5: you know, not everybody got the message, you know, and
- 13:47Speaker 5: they were they were very disappointed. I had to tell Aaron, no.
- 13:50Speaker 6: It was a painful experience, five thousand dollars plumbing problem,
- 13:57Speaker 6: and you got to you gotta make a decision here, right,
- 14:03Speaker 6: You can't you're going to keep chasing the past or
- 14:06Speaker 6: so I just packed it in.
- 14:09Speaker 5: It's unfortunate, I mean, it really is. But I understand. Yeah,
- 14:12Speaker 5: I completely understand. All right, I got I got a
- 14:16Speaker 5: couple of questions for you via the text line here.
- 14:18Speaker 5: One says, let me read the question and we'll take
- 14:21Speaker 5: the break. A question for Danny. Several whistleblowers have come
- 14:25Speaker 5: out and said the Chicago police are being ordered not
- 14:29Speaker 5: to not assist ice agents even if they're being physically attacked.
- 14:32Speaker 5: To tell me, how is this not obstruction of justice?
- 14:35Speaker 5: You can't tell local and state agencies to not assist
- 14:38Speaker 5: the FBI, so why is this acceptable and encourage?
- 14:42Speaker 6: I actually think you can. I think it's wrong. I
- 14:47Speaker 6: don't think it's obstruction. I think it's mismanagement. And ICE
- 14:53Speaker 6: are police officers. That's what these ICE agents are police officers,
- 14:59Speaker 6: and it's all So I agree it's wrong.
- 15:02Speaker 3: I don't. I don't think it's a truction all.

- 16:27Speaker 4: even if you plan to buy somewhere else.
- 16:30Speaker 5: But why would you?
- 16:31Speaker 4: You know, it's good to know that in a world
- 16:32Speaker 4: full of constant change, there are some things that remain
- 16:35Speaker 4: consistent and that some car dealers still believe in treating
- 16:39Speaker 4: you like a friend with a smile and a HANDSHAKEE
- 16:42Speaker 4: head to Walker Chevrolet and Nitro in the shadow of

- 17:25Speaker 5: fifty eight. Tony the Taylor text three zero four nine
- 17:28Speaker 5: three five five zero zero eight text says on the
- 17:32Speaker 5: needle program we were talking about earlier, God forbid, we
- 17:34Speaker 5: demand these people get clean instead of contributing to their
- 17:38Speaker 5: slow suicide by giving all caps, by giving them taxpayer
- 17:42Speaker 5: funded needles.
- 17:44Speaker 6: Well, I think the point of the whole program is
- 17:49Speaker 6: that they're not. They're not gonna get well, they're not
- 17:52Speaker 6: gonna quit using unless there's a program in place that
- 17:58Speaker 6: educates them along the way, as they do down at
- 18:02Speaker 6: health yeah health right now, down here at they didn't
- 18:07Speaker 6: do anything like that down at down at Cannel Charles's
- 18:12Speaker 6: health department.
- 18:14Speaker 5: What you take on the government, the partial government shutdown.
- 18:18Speaker 6: I don't know why they're getting paid. I mean, I
- 18:21Speaker 6: understand Carol Miller is not taking her paycheck.
- 18:25Speaker 5: She'll be on Metro News midday to day to talk
- 18:27Speaker 5: about it.
- 18:28Speaker 6: But I don't know why any of them are getting paid.
- 18:31Speaker 6: If they can't, if they can't fund the government, what
- 18:35Speaker 6: are they there for?
- 18:37Speaker 5: Right?
- 18:38Speaker 3: And they're getting paid and it's wrong, And.
- 18:41Speaker 5: I mean, I don't think this thing is gonna it's
- 18:44Speaker 5: gonna be settled anytime soon.
- 18:45Speaker 6: Do you I think President Trump's going to use it
- 18:50Speaker 6: to to punish people, to you know, eviscerate programs on
- 18:59Speaker 6: the lane left and people on the left right. He's
- 19:04Speaker 6: an eviscerator, yeah, yeah. I mean he's not a conservative
- 19:08Speaker 6: or a populace. He's an eviscerator.
- 19:10Speaker 5: No. I've said this from day one about Donald Trump.
- 19:12Speaker 5: Regardless of how you feel about him. He's not conservative,
- 19:16Speaker 5: I mean now at all.
- 19:17Speaker 3: He's not even a populist.
- 19:19Speaker 6: He's a guy that his whole thing is to his too,
- 19:25Speaker 6: in the words of David Brooks, eviscerating do away with
- 19:30Speaker 6: things that do away with things on the left or
- 19:34Speaker 6: institution to the left. This whole fight is about the
- 19:37Speaker 6: Affordable Care Act. There's not much of it left right,
- 19:41Speaker 6: and this would get rid of what's left of it,
- 19:45Speaker 6: and it would hurt to state. It would hurt because
- 19:50Speaker 6: it'll close hospitals. Anybody that can get to a hospital
- 19:55Speaker 6: can get healthcare. You might you're lying in the in
- 19:59Speaker 6: the mercery room, might get longer, but you you can
- 20:02Speaker 6: get healthcare.
- 20:04Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 20:04Speaker 5: And then this came about during the Reagan administration. I
- 20:06Speaker 5: heard a discussion about that on one of the TV
- 20:08Speaker 5: talk shows yesterday. They were talking about that on I
- 20:10Speaker 5: think it was ABC. On this week they were talking
- 20:12Speaker 5: about that.
- 20:13Speaker 6: Yeah, you you can get you can get health care.
- 20:17Speaker 6: But you can't get healthcare if you can't get to
- 20:19Speaker 6: a hospital.
- 20:21Speaker 8: And the.
- 20:24Speaker 6: In and the v A and Huntington, which is really
- 20:28Speaker 6: in Kentucky. The VA and Huntington is full of staff,
- 20:36Speaker 6: and the reason's full of staff. It's because the hospital
- 20:40Speaker 6: National And closed, and that closed before this happened. So
- 20:47Speaker 6: hospitals will close if they don't. If they don't shore
- 20:50Speaker 6: this thing up, this Medicaid things, if they don't preserve
- 20:59Speaker 6: the status, that's what's going to happen. It's going to
- 21:01Speaker 6: close hospitals.
- 21:02Speaker 5: Well, and we can't even get to a place and
- 21:04Speaker 5: this goes back to what you and I have talked
- 21:06Speaker 5: about on the air. We can't even get to a
- 21:08Speaker 5: place where we know what we're arguing about. No, I mean,
- 21:11Speaker 5: because everybody is owning it. Everybody is well, it's because
- 21:14Speaker 5: of the Dems, it's because of the Republican and everybody's
- 21:18Speaker 5: digging just like everything else, Danny, we dig our heels
- 21:22Speaker 5: in and it's their fault and it's never, never our fault.
- 21:27Speaker 6: The argument the Republicans make is all we're doing is
- 21:31Speaker 6: going back to where we were before the Affordable Care
- 21:36Speaker 6: Act passed. We still have Medicaid money, we just won't
- 21:40Speaker 6: have as much. Some states didn't take advantage of it.
- 21:45Speaker 3: We did. Florida. Didn't you know they didn't take advantage
- 21:51Speaker 3: of it. We did.
- 21:54Speaker 5: I want to ask you something. I brought this up
- 21:57Speaker 5: on the air last week and I'm gonna get your opinion.
- 21:59Speaker 5: It has to do with President Trump. I have said
- 22:03Speaker 5: that regardless of how you feel about President Trump, and
- 22:06Speaker 5: you and I are on the same page on President Trump.
- 22:11Speaker 5: Trump derangement syndrome is a real thing. I mean that
- 22:16Speaker 5: people that are just obsessed with it. I was having
- 22:21Speaker 5: coffee with a former my former radio station manager this morning.
- 22:26Speaker 5: We meet for coffee everybody, and he said something to
- 22:28Speaker 5: the effect of Trump could cure cancer, and people would
- 22:35Speaker 5: have an issue with it.
- 22:36Speaker 6: If he can, let me tell you something, He's gonna
- 22:38Speaker 6: look pretty good if he can. If he can formulate,
- 22:42Speaker 6: he and Derrick Kristener, another guy, can formulate a resolution
- 22:49Speaker 6: to this mess down in Gaza. I mean, President Trump's
- 22:54Speaker 6: gonna look pretty dagone good.
- 22:56Speaker 5: But would you agree that there is a certain segment
- 22:59Speaker 5: of the popular that is absolutely obsessed with dona true?
- 23:02Speaker 3: My goodness.
- 23:03Speaker 5: I mean, look, you you can disagree with his policies,
- 23:06Speaker 5: which I do on many many things. You can disagree
- 23:08Speaker 5: with him as an individual, which I do on many
- 23:10Speaker 5: many things. However, I see when he does good things,
- 23:14Speaker 5: I'm willing to say it, and I want the president.
- 23:17Speaker 5: Oddly enough, strange thought, I want the president to do well.
- 23:21Speaker 5: Whether I voted for him or not, I want because
- 23:24Speaker 5: I want to. I want the country to do well.
- 23:25Speaker 6: I want him to do well in Gaza. That's that's
- 23:30Speaker 6: what I'm kind of obffessed with right now. I'll go
- 23:34Speaker 6: up to the Why every morning at five and I
- 23:36Speaker 6: was walk in the circle, you know, I walk a
- 23:39Speaker 6: mile every morning up there. They have TVs all over
- 23:42Speaker 6: the place, and I'm looking. It's all about the Middle
- 23:46Speaker 6: East and about and about President Trump. And I'm just
- 23:51Speaker 6: told he's successful. What a big deal that would be.
- 23:54Speaker 5: Indeed, Texas Democrats are demanding two hundred billion dollars for
- 23:57Speaker 5: health care for illegal aliens. Know, I can't afford insurance
- 24:01Speaker 5: of my own employer for myself, So no to my
- 24:04Speaker 5: hard earned tax dollars to pay for millions of people
- 24:06Speaker 5: who should not even be here. That shut down is
- 24:08Speaker 5: on the Democrats.
- 24:09Speaker 3: Okay, okay, you're not going to get an argument with me.
- 24:13Speaker 5: Tex says, are people realizing what Republican policies are doing.
- 24:16Speaker 5: They don't want you to have affordable health care, they
- 24:19Speaker 5: don't want you to have a functioning an educational public
- 24:21Speaker 5: school system.
- 24:23Speaker 3: I'm not sure I agree with that.
- 24:26Speaker 5: Before I let you go. I do want to ask
- 24:28Speaker 5: you a couple of things about it. Legislative interims are
- 24:31Speaker 5: going on, any any recollections from any interims back in
- 24:36Speaker 5: your in your day when you serve the legislature.
- 24:38Speaker 6: I like them, and because they were casual, you could.
- 24:42Speaker 6: They were joint committees with senators. And by the way
- 24:46Speaker 6: you were asked me about Marjor Burke, I'm going, I'm
- 24:48Speaker 6: gonna that's what That's what the thing I'm gonna do.
- 24:50Speaker 6: And you were able. It was more casual, you could.
- 24:59Speaker 6: Everybody was chairman, you know. It was just a I
- 25:03Speaker 6: liked in Urum, so I thought they were good and
- 25:06Speaker 6: I was. Of course they were all here then they
- 25:08Speaker 6: were all in Charleston.
- 25:09Speaker 5: Yeah, these are in Charleston now, but they do go
- 25:12Speaker 5: around the state for differently.
- 25:13Speaker 6: Well maybe they should, yeah, they probably should. But when
- 25:17Speaker 6: I was there, they were all in Charleston, and I
- 25:21Speaker 6: enjoyed inn Urham. I thought they were good.
- 25:24Speaker 3: All right.
- 25:24Speaker 5: You mentioned it there a couple of days ago, and
- 25:26Speaker 5: we talked about it on the mid morning news. This morning,
- 25:29Speaker 5: Marge Burke passed away. She served from nineteen seventy eight
- 25:33Speaker 5: through nineteen ninety six in the legislature and the State
- 25:36Speaker 5: Democratic Party was out with the statement about how she
- 25:38Speaker 5: was a trailblazer for women and government. I'm sure Mayor
- 25:41Speaker 5: Goodwin want to talk about it your memory.
- 25:44Speaker 3: She's gonna put the hay down where the goats can
- 25:46Speaker 3: get it.
- 25:46Speaker 5: That was that was her thing.
- 25:50Speaker 3: That was her thing.
- 25:51Speaker 5: I'm going to put the hay down where the goats can.
- 25:52Speaker 6: Get And I think she was married to Billy Burke,
- 25:54Speaker 6: who was the person that put together the regional jails.
- 26:00Speaker 6: He was Gaston's guy that got together with Howard Yeowey.
- 26:05Speaker 3: He was the architect.
- 26:07Speaker 6: And but Marge was a real nice lady. And it
- 26:13Speaker 6: was very partisan back then. Demonbo, you know Republicans. The
- 26:22Speaker 6: Preacher of the House, I can't remember his name. He
- 26:25Speaker 6: was a conservative Democrat from Summers County. He has said, well,
- 26:30Speaker 6: we you all are down there in the amen corner.
- 26:33Speaker 6: We want we do we want you all say amen.
- 26:36Speaker 6: There were only twenty of us, twenty of Republicans. Yeah,
- 26:39Speaker 6: only twenty Republicans back then. And but Marge was one
- 26:45Speaker 6: of the Democrats. And if you if you were on
- 26:49Speaker 6: a committee, you could you could get something done as
- 26:53Speaker 6: a Republican. But the problem was a guy like Catcher
- 26:57Speaker 6: who just died. If he didn't like what you did,
- 27:01Speaker 6: you just wouldn't put it on the agenda. He said,
- 27:04Speaker 6: you know you've passed a committee. Well, bye bye.
- 27:08Speaker 5: How much time in your book and we'll wrap it
- 27:09Speaker 5: up with this. How much time in your book is
- 27:11Speaker 5: going to be spent on your days in the legislature?
- 27:13Speaker 3: Not much, now, I didn't. I not much at all?
- 27:20Speaker 5: Okay, all right, we'on't wait for the second or third
- 27:23Speaker 5: book on that. It was a I want to hear
- 27:25Speaker 5: stories about it because I know a lot of these
- 27:26Speaker 5: people you serve with, people like Bill Anderson from Logan
- 27:30Speaker 5: County and jose Fawoll late to jose Bill still living.
- 27:34Speaker 5: Bill lives in Florida, but JOSEIEH. Ferrol passed a couple
- 27:36Speaker 5: of years.
- 27:36Speaker 6: You said that Harry with Harry's read the book Harry
- 27:43Speaker 6: McLean in broad Daylight? Yeah, yeah, bid Moore. He said,
- 27:47Speaker 6: you should have built build up more as to why
- 27:52Speaker 6: you ran for sheriff. In other words, there's something that
- 27:56Speaker 6: happened when I was twenty four, and that that was
- 28:00Speaker 6: a reader and I'll believe it at that And when
- 28:04Speaker 6: I was thirty four, I was elected Sheriff Kennall County.
- 28:09Speaker 6: What happened between those times had made all that change
- 28:14Speaker 6: because there were some changes, right, all right.
- 28:17Speaker 5: Well, we'll read about it in the book, but we'll
- 28:18Speaker 5: talk about little bit more next week. Asa Okay, all right.

- 30:44Speaker 5: I was shocked yesterday Andrew Mitchell said if Trump ends
- 30:47Speaker 5: the war between Israel and guys, that he deserves a
- 30:49Speaker 5: Nobel Peace Prize. Says a texture tex says, I like
- 30:52Speaker 5: when Dave cheers on Trump, it's usually for something violent, unconstitutional,
- 30:56Speaker 5: or when he's trolling. Dave says he's not a maga duck,
- 30:58Speaker 5: but he walks and talks uh okay violent. And I
- 31:04Speaker 5: spoke out against January sixth. I thought that everybody that
- 31:07Speaker 5: went inside the Capitol should have been arrested and jailed.
- 31:12Speaker 5: Did not support that. Texas. The only reason America gives
- 31:15Speaker 5: a crap about the Middle East is because of the
- 31:16Speaker 5: oil market, all that turmoil and death to keep the
- 31:20Speaker 5: oil market stable. Do Christians and Jews who support this
- 31:24Speaker 5: really think they have a pleasant afterlife? Texas, Trump and
- 31:27Speaker 5: net and Yahoo bon Palestine to rubble. Any president could
- 31:30Speaker 5: have done that and would get the results that have happened,
- 31:32Speaker 5: But previous presidents weren't as psychotic as Trump. Charleston, Mary Amy,
- 31:37Speaker 5: Sure a good one is here.
- 31:38Speaker 11: How you doing, I'm wonderful. How about you?
- 31:40Speaker 5: I am doing fine. Thank you for being here. I
- 31:42Speaker 5: did I've got it.
- 31:43Speaker 11: That a cowboy shirt, of course, it is, Yes, looks
- 31:45Speaker 11: nice on you.
- 31:46Speaker 5: Thank you, Thank you. We won yesterday. We met Mike
- 31:48Speaker 5: Pushkin's jet. If Dallas had a defense, we'd be okay
- 31:52Speaker 5: because we got one of the best offenses in the
- 31:54Speaker 5: league right now. But the defense is you and I
- 31:57Speaker 5: could probably you know, get one hundred yards gainst the scalp.
- 32:01Speaker 5: I wanted to ask you, just real quick about the
- 32:04Speaker 5: passing of Marge Burke. She of course served as Danny
- 32:07Speaker 5: and I talked about from seventy eight through ninety six
- 32:10Speaker 5: and legislature of your thoughts.
- 32:11Speaker 11: Sure, Actually I knew Delegate Burke because she was girlfriends
- 32:16Speaker 11: with my grandmother, My grandmother theas Francis o'donald blat Neeck,
- 32:22Speaker 11: Irish Catholic from the North single of mom of three
- 32:27Speaker 11: and Marge had a lot in common in their time
- 32:31Speaker 11: in the House, and then my grandmother went on to
- 32:33Speaker 11: the Senate. But during their time in the House they
- 32:36Speaker 11: worked on family issues, women's issues, and you know, to
- 32:41Speaker 11: be standing in that chamber, Dave where you know, unfortunately,
- 32:46Speaker 11: still to this day, it's very rare to see women
- 32:49Speaker 11: walking the halls of the State House. They were too powerhouses,
- 32:56Speaker 11: very outspoken. But you know, as I was listening to,
- 33:00Speaker 11: you know, conversations about her over the weekend and just
- 33:03Speaker 11: a little bit ago, it is and allows me to
- 33:07Speaker 11: sit back and reflect of a time I almost remember,
- 33:10Speaker 11: like yesterday, I was a page. It could be a page.
- 33:14Speaker 11: They still have pages. And it was so fun to
- 33:17Speaker 11: be with my grandmother because we stayed in her hotel
- 33:19Speaker 11: room and got to order cheeseburgers to the room and
- 33:21Speaker 11: that was super like fun, and got to go to
- 33:23Speaker 11: the pool and swim at night. But where Democrats and
- 33:28Speaker 11: Republicans did then what people should expect us to do now,
- 33:35Speaker 11: which was have a healthy, respectful, professional debate, which just
- 33:42Speaker 11: doesn't seem to happen any longer with you know, all
- 33:46Speaker 11: sides of all parties. And they did it, and they
- 33:50Speaker 11: did it extremely well. You can be passionate about something,
- 33:53Speaker 11: can be thoughtful about something. You can have certainly your
- 33:57Speaker 11: own opinions, and some of those opinions are backed up
- 33:59Speaker 11: by act. We always hope.
- 34:01Speaker 6: Uh.
- 34:02Speaker 11: But it was a time and a place that I
- 34:04Speaker 11: watched my grandmother have hearty discussions on the floor and
- 34:08Speaker 11: in the hallways. And I remember one time my sister
- 34:11Speaker 11: a different different house member, actually she's in the Senate,
- 34:14Speaker 11: different Senate member, different party, and they were discussing and
- 34:18Speaker 11: and we walked away and my sister said, we called
- 34:20Speaker 11: her Mimi. And my sister said, my grandmother said, we're
- 34:24Speaker 11: gonna go back to the hotel, but we're gonna we're
- 34:26Speaker 11: gonna grab We're gonna have our dinner with Senator so
- 34:28Speaker 11: and so. Girls. My sister said, but Mimi, you don't
- 34:32Speaker 11: like him. And she said, oh no, honey, is one
- 34:34Speaker 11: of my best friends. We're like, what it was okay
- 34:39Speaker 11: to have those discussions and then go and break bread.
- 34:42Speaker 11: And it just sounds so trite, and so, you know,
- 34:45Speaker 11: I sound like a broken record when I say it.
- 34:47Speaker 11: It's just it's old. It's old, and you know, my
- 34:51Speaker 11: children and the future of folks who are in public servant.
- 34:54Speaker 11: What I what I fear, Dave more than anything, is
- 34:58Speaker 11: that it becomes such a sur in, such a show
- 35:02Speaker 11: that people are not going to want to run because
- 35:07Speaker 11: they don't want to put up with it.
- 35:09Speaker 8: You know.
- 35:10Speaker 11: I have a different philosophy about that. It's that's that
- 35:13Speaker 11: won't bother me, you know. And people say, oh, did
- 35:15Speaker 11: you see this online?
- 35:15Speaker 12: No?
- 35:16Speaker 11: I don't. No, I don't. If you call my office
- 35:19Speaker 11: or you text me, or you email me and you
- 35:20Speaker 11: want to sit down and have a conversation or you
- 35:22Speaker 11: want to have a discussion about issues and be respectful
- 35:25Speaker 11: and kind, yes, But if you want to say I'm
- 35:28Speaker 11: stupid or fat or whatever online, I am not interested
- 35:31Speaker 11: in that whatsoever. It just kind of junks up. It
- 35:34Speaker 11: junks up your brain. But I think it is also
- 35:38Speaker 11: done by design. And the days of March Burke and
- 35:41Speaker 11: her wonderful way about her was just that, and I
- 35:46Speaker 11: hope we can all go back to that.
- 35:47Speaker 5: And the passing of Kittie Dooley too. You came on
- 35:49Speaker 5: Metro News midday and talked about it kind of last
- 35:52Speaker 5: minute on Friday. But in case people didn't hear that.
- 35:54Speaker 11: Yeah, just such a loss. She was such a champion,
- 35:57Speaker 11: and you know, read the the stories that you guys
- 36:01Speaker 11: have posted and the testimonials of her friends and mentors
- 36:05Speaker 11: and colleagues. I hope people know what she did behind
- 36:10Speaker 11: doors as well, was to say to women, don't stand
- 36:13Speaker 11: in the back of the room, stand up here with us,
- 36:17Speaker 11: don't don't stop asking questions because that is a that's
- 36:22Speaker 11: a space that I feel like we're also getting into.
- 36:24Speaker 11: I don't want to I don't want to seem dumb,
- 36:25Speaker 11: because we should know because of these little things we
- 36:28Speaker 11: hold in our hands all day, I feel like I
- 36:29Speaker 11: should know everything. Well, Kitty didn't believe in that. She
- 36:33Speaker 11: believed in continuing to ask questions and getting the perspective
- 36:37Speaker 11: of everyone. She was a wonderful mentor to so many
- 36:40Speaker 11: of us, a good friend, but somebody who captured millions,
- 36:43Speaker 11: gave millions of dollars in funding to make sure that
- 36:47Speaker 11: our babies were taken care of and people had a
- 36:49Speaker 11: safe place to live at the end of the night. Yeah,
- 36:51Speaker 11: she was a great advocate for women and just an
- 36:54Speaker 11: outstanding legal mind. But she cared about people and that
- 36:58Speaker 11: was the most important thing.
- 36:59Speaker 5: Talk with Charleston Mayor Amy Shulter A good one to
- 37:01Speaker 5: day Island showing five adye line broad to you a
- 37:03Speaker 5: part by your hometown baseball team, the Charleston Dirty Birds,
- 37:05Speaker 5: the Selango Law Light the Night returning to the Ballpark
- 37:08Speaker 5: November twenty first January first, Yeah, unsolicited to comment, I'm kidding.
- 37:15Speaker 5: Get your tickets in advanced by visiting Dblighttnight dot com.
- 37:17Speaker 5: Couple things here I wanted to cover with you. The
- 37:20Speaker 5: Charleston Land Use of land Reuse Agens. He's going to
- 37:23Speaker 5: have a public meeting tomorrow night. It's going to be
- 37:27Speaker 5: at Element Edge Downtown to update residents on its work
- 37:33Speaker 5: for vacant, abandon dilapidated properties and trying to get them
- 37:37Speaker 5: to somewhat productivity or you know, to make them productive.
- 37:42Speaker 5: And there's going to be a presentation on the current
- 37:46Speaker 5: projects and programs, followed by opportunity for residents to speak
- 37:49Speaker 5: directly with the board. What can you tell us about
- 37:51Speaker 5: that meeting?
- 37:52Speaker 11: Sure, very quickly, I'll go backwards before I go forward.
- 37:55Speaker 11: Created the Land Reagency and two thousand and nineteen and
- 37:59Speaker 11: we have been builtilding this group for many, many years.
- 38:04Speaker 11: I say all the time, but it's always worth repeating.
- 38:06Speaker 11: I've torn down since being mayor because we had a
- 38:09Speaker 11: stockpile of homes that needed to be torn down. I
- 38:12Speaker 11: don't like to tear down houses, by the way, Dave.
- 38:13Speaker 11: I don't like to if we can rehabilitate them, getting
- 38:17Speaker 11: them into use with another family, that's what That is
- 38:22Speaker 11: my ultimate goal. And I'll talk about those three programs
- 38:24Speaker 11: that we started. But I have torn down since becoming
- 38:27Speaker 11: mayor over seven hundred properties plus. But you can't tear
- 38:33Speaker 11: an entire city down and build it up at the
- 38:35Speaker 11: same time if you're actually not building. I did a
- 38:38Speaker 11: speech over the weekend to talk about building and how
- 38:40Speaker 11: joyful it is, and it is. The Land Reuse Agency
- 38:44Speaker 11: has three programs we're going to talk about just in
- 38:47Speaker 11: a quick presentation, our home Ownership Property Renovation Fund, our
- 38:51Speaker 11: Rehabilitation of vacant houses, and our side lot program. Because
- 38:55Speaker 11: you know, many of the spaces that we are places
- 38:58Speaker 11: that we have torn down. It may not be big
- 39:00Speaker 11: enough to build another house, Dave, but by golly it
- 39:04Speaker 11: it sure is nice to have that extra parking pad,
- 39:07Speaker 11: especially on the East end and the West side. Where
- 39:09Speaker 11: you know, now we have two cars now just a
- 39:11Speaker 11: one car family, and we're not just parking on the street.
- 39:13Speaker 11: We like to bark, or we want a bigger yard,
- 39:15Speaker 11: we want to put a slicky slide in for the babies,
- 39:17Speaker 11: or want to have a nice guard and so that
- 39:19Speaker 11: has been a very popular program. So tonight we're not
- 39:22Speaker 11: only going to share what we have done to it
- 39:26Speaker 11: is tomorrow, I'm sorry, tomorrow night. Yeah, tonight's counseling to
- 39:28Speaker 11: get to that. Yeah, we will talk about that. But
- 39:31Speaker 11: tomorrow night, five thirty elmen edge, we're going to talk
- 39:33Speaker 11: a little bit about what we've done, but we also
- 39:35Speaker 11: want to hear from you. You know, the most valuable thing.
- 39:38Speaker 11: You want to You want to know what people really feel.
- 39:41Speaker 7: Uh.
- 39:41Speaker 11: It's something that we do and we do all the time.
- 39:43Speaker 11: We have so many community meetings because we should. We
- 39:47Speaker 11: have so many town halls because we should. But the
- 39:50Speaker 11: other thing I wanted to make mention, and I know
- 39:53Speaker 11: you know, I do this every single month. I try
- 39:56Speaker 11: to do it every single week. Hours and hours and
- 39:59Speaker 11: hours go door to door. Still I go door to
- 40:02Speaker 11: door and just say hi, I'm here, I'm with the government,
- 40:05Speaker 11: I'm here to help but but I give them a
- 40:08Speaker 11: flyer to say, here are all the numbers of every
- 40:10Speaker 11: agency in the City of Charleston, all of our divisions,
- 40:13Speaker 11: including mine. What do you got well? I went. I
- 40:17Speaker 11: was in Kanas City last week and several You know,
- 40:23Speaker 11: when people say, let me tell you what people are
- 40:24Speaker 11: talking about, I'll tell you what they're talking about. They're
- 40:26Speaker 11: talking about neighborhood issues. They care about the things that
- 40:29Speaker 11: are happening well, not only on their straight That lights out, amy,
- 40:32Speaker 11: get it fixed. Hey, that pothole, Hey, that crack sidewalk. Hey,
- 40:35Speaker 11: there are speeders Kanas City. There are lots and lots
- 40:39Speaker 11: of speeding calls that we received and certainly tackling that
- 40:42Speaker 11: issue as well. But it's it's not only on their block,
- 40:46Speaker 11: but it's inside their house. You know what, what what
- 40:50Speaker 11: is my neighborhood?
- 40:51Speaker 9: Like?
- 40:52Speaker 11: How about opportunities for my kids? Jobs, paychecks? So it
- 40:55Speaker 11: is you know, people are myopic, as they should be.
- 40:58Speaker 11: These are their lives. And we have also got in
- 41:00Speaker 11: a way from talking about things that really impact people.
- 41:03Speaker 11: And when you can listen and learn from the things
- 41:06Speaker 11: that they really really care about, that's when you can
- 41:08Speaker 11: make good progress.
- 41:09Speaker 5: You mentioned counsel tonight. One of the items on the
- 41:13Speaker 5: agenda authorizing the transfer of the eight hundred thousand dollars
- 41:20Speaker 5: think it is from the Opioid Settlement Fund to the
- 41:22Speaker 5: Care Office.
- 41:23Speaker 11: Yeah, right so, and for good reason. We're doing that
- 41:27Speaker 11: to make sure that the care Team is funded. There
- 41:29Speaker 11: are fewer grant programs out there to help sustain but
- 41:33Speaker 11: fortunately we have some of moneys from the Opioid Settlement Fund,
- 41:38Speaker 11: some of those monies Dave by the way, and I
- 41:40Speaker 11: think I talked about it on this program. I know
- 41:42Speaker 11: Matthew Sutton, my chief of staff, did we have, with
- 41:45Speaker 11: council's approval, are working with community organizations to help their
- 41:50Speaker 11: funding to get out and do some recovery. It's everything
- 41:55Speaker 11: from prevention and recovery, prevention and recovery, and it is.
- 42:04Speaker 11: It's going extremely well. Lots of folks, more applications than
- 42:08Speaker 11: we have money in this first round. We're working with
- 42:10Speaker 11: the United Way on it, so it's really really beneficial.
- 42:13Speaker 11: But the care Team is the coordinated addiction response effort.
- 42:16Speaker 11: Remember I talked about walking houses when I ran for mayor.
- 42:19Speaker 11: I wanted to know what people actually wanted, not just
- 42:22Speaker 11: what people wanted them to believe and we can get
- 42:25Speaker 11: into that if you'd like. But it was the thing
- 42:29Speaker 11: that I heard my mother, sister's brother, she has addiction,
- 42:32Speaker 11: Please help us, and so I started the care program
- 42:35Speaker 11: and our main goal is to get people into recovery.
- 42:38Speaker 11: We have two thousand people since we started we've put
- 42:40Speaker 11: into recovery, and so we're very proud of that. But
- 42:43Speaker 11: let me also hit on the heels of saying the
- 42:45Speaker 11: Care Team also works with our police department. They also
- 42:48Speaker 11: work with our fire department. I want to get you
- 42:50Speaker 11: into recovery, but if you're here to take advantage of
- 42:53Speaker 11: our kindness, if you're here to commit crimes, you'll go
- 42:55Speaker 11: to jail. So it's you know, the care Team has
- 42:58Speaker 11: evolved over years day, but it's funding to make sure
- 43:02Speaker 11: that they can continue to do their good work. And
- 43:05Speaker 11: also we have what's called the Care one Team, which
- 43:08Speaker 11: is member of the Care Team, member the police department,
- 43:10Speaker 11: member the fire department, and they go out and they
- 43:13Speaker 11: take on calls that the police officers don't have to
- 43:17Speaker 11: go to. You talk about it all the time on
- 43:19Speaker 11: this show. Our police officers are not mental health experts.
- 43:22Speaker 11: They are experts in a lot of fields, and that's
- 43:25Speaker 11: not one of them. We're getting better with our cit training.
- 43:28Speaker 11: But they go out in the field and they respond
- 43:30Speaker 11: to the call, so a police team doesn't have to
- 43:34Speaker 11: go out that they have a three member excellent team.
- 43:37Speaker 11: If we do need police, they certainly are called the
- 43:41Speaker 11: fire department and our medics go with them. If it's
- 43:43Speaker 11: something that they can handle, they handle it there to
- 43:46Speaker 11: make sure that your ambulance that you need is there
- 43:50Speaker 11: for you and to intercept those calls. That's what municipal
- 43:53Speaker 11: government is doing right now. We're doing the heavy lifting
- 43:58Speaker 11: and the very very hard work of this opioid crisis
- 44:02Speaker 11: and quite frankly, this mental health crisis.

- 46:58Speaker 5: One thing, Mayor I thought it was interesting, is I
- 47:01Speaker 5: come into Charleston every morning about seven thirty. Now, keep
- 47:04Speaker 5: in mind, I'm coming from Tays Valley, so sometimes it's
- 47:07Speaker 5: eight thirty. I attempt for it to be seven thirty.
- 47:11Speaker 5: But it's a good time to come into town because people,
- 47:13Speaker 5: you know, in the courthouse and city Hall or whatever
- 47:15Speaker 5: are just starting to come in. One of the things
- 47:17Speaker 5: that was I posted some pictures on my social media beautiful,
- 47:20Speaker 5: beautiful sunrise this morning.
- 47:21Speaker 11: Yeah really coo.
- 47:22Speaker 5: Well, when you come in to town on Virginia Street,
- 47:25Speaker 5: one of the things that I notice is all of
- 47:28Speaker 5: the construction of those big buildings downtown. I mean, I
- 47:33Speaker 5: just I like it because obviously, you know, you get
- 47:36Speaker 5: people investing here in downtown Charleston. I don't know, it
- 47:42Speaker 5: sounds corny. I just like you know, when you're pulling
- 47:44Speaker 5: into town at that time and you see the folks
- 47:46Speaker 5: out there working on the sunrise and everything. There's a
- 47:49Speaker 5: lot of stuff going on.
- 47:50Speaker 11: Sure, you know, and especially on that Virginia Street as
- 47:53Speaker 11: you comment off of the interstate exit there. It's funny,
- 47:57Speaker 11: this has been gosh you it's probably been or so.
- 48:00Speaker 8: Now.
- 48:01Speaker 11: My husband sent to me, I leave the house before
- 48:04Speaker 11: he does in the morning. But he came down and
- 48:06Speaker 11: he took a picture of just that stretch of Virginia
- 48:11Speaker 11: Street and had cranes plural in it, and he said,
- 48:15Speaker 11: I wanted to send you this picture because I know
- 48:16Speaker 11: how much you love cranes, and I do. I love
- 48:19Speaker 11: cranes because cranes in a city means development, it means progress. Now,
- 48:23Speaker 11: I will say, we do get calls every now and then,
- 48:25Speaker 11: why is this sidewalk shut down? All the lights are
- 48:28Speaker 11: out here? Well, when you're building, there's a lot of
- 48:32Speaker 11: construction that goes on, and there's a lot of stuff
- 48:34Speaker 11: that we have shut down to make sure that those
- 48:36Speaker 11: cranes get in and HVAC systems get put on on roofs.
- 48:39Speaker 11: But there is a lot of construction going on in
- 48:42Speaker 11: the city of Charleston, and we're super proud of that.
- 48:44Speaker 11: But let me also say that just a hop, skip
- 48:47Speaker 11: and a jump to the Municipal Auditorium and hopefully you
- 48:50Speaker 11: keep I sound like a broken record, but that is
- 48:53Speaker 11: a building that we are still investigating with our architects
- 48:57Speaker 11: and engineers. Do we and we save it? Can we
- 49:01Speaker 11: save any part of it? And then what does that
- 49:03Speaker 11: look like? And what is the investment that we should
- 49:06Speaker 11: be making in that facility. So that's still on the table.
- 49:09Speaker 11: And the huge, big elephant in the room is the mall.
- 49:12Speaker 11: And you know, I always like to say when people
- 49:14Speaker 11: say what are you going to do with the mall?
- 49:16Speaker 11: And I say, well, it's not mine. It's like me
- 49:18Speaker 11: saying what am I going to do with your business?
- 49:20Speaker 11: Where's your business in town? You don't want me coming
- 49:22Speaker 11: in and doing it. But you know, as we inch
- 49:25Speaker 11: closer to some announcements on some future progress, I am
- 49:29Speaker 11: so incredibly excited about the development and that part of
- 49:35Speaker 11: the city of Charleston. You can't have a thriving city
- 49:37Speaker 11: if you don't have a downtown city center. At Slack plaza.
- 49:40Speaker 11: We put three million in. We got fifteen million back
- 49:42Speaker 11: immediately in return. I play that investment game all day.
- 49:46Speaker 5: You know it is you talk about the mall, IM
- 49:48Speaker 5: mean thisbaudatorium. Those are things that I've been doing. I've
- 49:51Speaker 5: been doing this show for five years, mayor, and I
- 49:53Speaker 5: was tarking about it in May of twenty twenty. Of course,
- 49:55Speaker 5: that was during COVID when I started doing the show,
- 49:57Speaker 5: and people then we're talking.
- 49:59Speaker 11: About the Yeah, sure, well people have been talking about
- 50:02Speaker 11: them all for twenty years. Really. I remember when Danny
- 50:05Speaker 11: Jones left office, and I'm sure he remembers this. He
- 50:08Speaker 11: literally walked out of the office on that day and said, well,
- 50:11Speaker 11: that's the anvil around your neck. Good luck, And he
- 50:15Speaker 11: was right, by the way. But it's really hard when
- 50:18Speaker 11: you don't have control of a piece of property.
- 50:20Speaker 5: It's a private business. And again I think people fail
- 50:23Speaker 5: to realize that. You know, they'll say, you know, why
- 50:26Speaker 5: don't you do something or whoever the mayor is. You
- 50:28Speaker 5: can't tell people as long as they're following, you know,
- 50:31Speaker 5: all the regulations. You cannot go in and tell people
- 50:34Speaker 5: how to run a private business. That's right, I mean,
- 50:36Speaker 5: and that's what it is.
- 50:37Speaker 11: But I think that you know, as commissioner president of
- 50:41Speaker 11: SELANGO and I continue our discussions about the Capital Sports
- 50:47Speaker 11: Complex also, it's going to continue on into that footprint
- 50:51Speaker 11: of them all. What can happen in that space and place.
- 50:53Speaker 11: And what we do know is this, since changing the
- 50:56Speaker 11: management at the coliseum and convention Center, and with all
- 51:00Speaker 11: of the national and international attention that we've received on
- 51:03Speaker 11: sporting events, we have a really grand opportunity to continue
- 51:08Speaker 11: to build in that area of the city, which is
- 51:10Speaker 11: quite frankly thriving right now.
- 51:12Speaker 5: Can you give us any hint to the doll as
- 51:14Speaker 5: far as what may happen, I didn't think so. I
- 51:16Speaker 5: just thought i'd ask you, well, I'll just say this.
- 51:18Speaker 11: I'll just say this. When people say we need them
- 51:20Speaker 11: all we need we need look at Barbersville. We do
- 51:22Speaker 11: have Barbersville. It's called South Ridge and by the way,
