- 1:24Speaker 2: violence that moved west with young America and the story
- 1:27Speaker 2: of a man who moved with it.
- 1:29Speaker 3: I'm that man, Matt Dillon, United States Marshall, the first
- 1:33Speaker 3: man they look for and the last.
- 1:35Speaker 4: They want to meet.
- 1:37Speaker 3: It's a chancy job that makes a man watchful and
- 1:41Speaker 3: a little lonely. It was a hard two day ride
- 2:03Speaker 3: back from Fort Wallace all right.
- 2:06Speaker 4: Gone on government business. And I was pretty saddle weary
- 2:10Speaker 4: when I reached Dodge late the second night, so I
- 2:13Speaker 4: went straight to bed without seeing anybody. I'd been gone
- 2:17Speaker 4: a couple of weeks, but i'd wired Chester a few
- 2:19Speaker 4: days before.
- 2:20Speaker 3: When to expect me back, And he wasn't surprised when
- 2:24Speaker 3: I walked into the office next morning.
- 2:27Speaker 5: I figured you'd rode in last night sometime, mister Dylan.
- 2:30Speaker 5: But I didn't want to bother you.
- 2:31Speaker 4: I'll bother me when I was in trouble last night.
- 2:33Speaker 5: Just no sure, but everybody was sort of expecting you.
- 2:36Speaker 6: Oh where was you yesterday?
- 2:39Speaker 5: Anyway?
- 2:40Speaker 7: I mean, where'd you ride from Funny Creek?
- 2:42Speaker 4: I camped at Rocky Bend.
- 2:44Speaker 5: Oh, Rocky Ben's a good camp, I remember it. Oh.
- 2:50Speaker 5: I meant to tell you, mister Dylan. They hung up
- 2:52Speaker 5: a new sign at the Texas Trail across.
- 2:54Speaker 8: The street there.
- 2:55Speaker 5: Come on over here to wind and you.
- 2:56Speaker 8: Can see it.
- 2:57Speaker 4: Well, I look later, Chester, and I could go through
- 2:59Speaker 4: my mail.
- 3:00Speaker 5: Uh yessure, Well, now who's that?
- 3:07Speaker 6: What about?
- 3:09Speaker 5: Four men just pulled up in a wagon right out
- 3:11Speaker 5: front there. They're getting down. Hey, they're hidding this way.
- 3:16Speaker 5: Why don't weave I know any of them?
- 3:19Speaker 4: Well, let them in anyway, hunt Chester.
- 3:21Speaker 5: Oh, yes, come in, gentlemen, come in.
- 3:27Speaker 8: Where's Marshall's Dylan.
- 3:28Speaker 5: He's just something right there at his destiny.
- 3:33Speaker 4: Marshall.
- 3:34Speaker 8: I'm ready, Samples.
- 3:35Speaker 4: Hello.
- 3:37Speaker 8: These other men here work for me except him. Huggins.
- 3:40Speaker 8: Come up here. This is Jim Huggins, Marshall, Huggins. Hello, Marshalls.
- 3:47Speaker 8: There's another man laying in the back of the wagon
- 3:49Speaker 8: out there. Marshall. He's been shot.
- 3:51Speaker 6: Did you stay shot?
- 3:52Speaker 8: That's what I said.
- 3:53Speaker 5: Oh, then I better run upstairs and get Doc Adams.
- 3:55Speaker 5: I'll be back with dying.
- 3:58Speaker 8: Doc Adams ain't going to do him any good. No,
- 4:01Speaker 8: that man's dead, Marshal. He's been dead since yesterday morning.
- 4:05Speaker 8: Oh is he Lou Price?
- 4:09Speaker 4: Low Price?
- 4:10Speaker 8: That's right, same man you ran out of town about
- 4:13Speaker 8: a month ago. You were pretty mad at him the
- 4:16Speaker 8: way I heard.
- 4:16Speaker 4: It, Yeah, I was. He tried to put a knife
- 4:18Speaker 4: under me.
- 4:19Speaker 8: Nobody saw him try.
- 4:22Speaker 4: How do you know that?
- 4:24Speaker 8: He told me Lou Price was the sort of partner
- 4:27Speaker 8: of mine. Marshall. Oh, buying up cattle, Marshall all over Kansas,
- 4:33Speaker 8: mine lots of them. And having a big ranch when
- 4:36Speaker 8: I threw up on Pawnee Quick.
- 4:37Speaker 4: Oh that's fine.
- 4:39Speaker 8: You were camped on Pawnee Quick night before last Monture Marshall. Yeah,
- 4:45Speaker 8: I was at Rocky Bend. That's right here. That meant
- 4:51Speaker 8: The only reason I asked, Marshall was that Jim Huggins
- 4:53Speaker 8: happened to see you there.
- 4:55Speaker 4: Oh is that so? I don't remember seeing him?
- 4:57Speaker 8: It doesn't matter. Well if he saw you, tell him
- 5:01Speaker 8: Huggins it was him, all right. That's where Lou Price
- 5:05Speaker 8: were shot, Marshall, at Rocky Bend. For Lou you never
- 5:09Speaker 8: had a chance. He wasn't even armed.
- 5:12Speaker 7: Happened yesterday morning. I've seen the whole thing.
- 5:15Speaker 8: Huggins. Tell us who killed Lou?
- 5:20Speaker 7: He did what you did, Marshall. He's the man I
- 5:26Speaker 7: saw you shot him?
- 5:35Speaker 4: All right, what's your game?
- 5:37Speaker 8: I've got no game. My partner was murdered. You had
- 5:41Speaker 8: a grudge against him. He just admitted before witnesses you
- 5:45Speaker 8: were at Rocky Bend. Jim Huggins has identified you as
- 5:48Speaker 8: the man who saw kill Lou. It's good enough evidence
- 5:52Speaker 8: for any court of law. You will hang for it. Marshall.
- 5:55Speaker 4: We got it all figured, haven't you.
- 5:57Speaker 8: We're going down right now and swear it out legal paper,
- 6:01Speaker 8: and I'm going to send it to the governor. Don't
- 6:03Speaker 8: you try to get away, Marshalled. We'll run you down.
- 6:07Speaker 3: Sure, yeah, I expect your wood samples here. Men look
- 6:11Speaker 3: like professional gunman, except for Huggins.
- 6:15Speaker 8: I never saw Huggins till he run into us yesterday.
- 6:18Speaker 4: I don't bring you no goodge, Marshall.
- 6:21Speaker 7: I'm only trying to do what's right.
- 6:23Speaker 4: Sure, sure, yeah.
- 6:25Speaker 8: All right, let's get going then. So do I get
- 6:28Speaker 8: this to the governor the sooner we'll see justice done.
- 6:32Speaker 8: Remember what I said, Marshall, don't you try to run.
- 6:55Speaker 3: I'll say one thing for red Samples. He had about
- 6:58Speaker 3: as good a case against me as I ever heard
- 7:00Speaker 3: of against any man, and there was nothing I could
- 7:04Speaker 3: do about it.
- 7:05Speaker 4: But wait and see what happened next.
- 7:09Speaker 3: Meantime, he's spread the word around Dodge, and people began
- 7:13Speaker 3: looking at.
- 7:14Speaker 4: Me like I was a white buffalo.
- 7:18Speaker 3: I guess it wasn't often they had a US Marshall
- 7:20Speaker 3: walking around with a murder charge against him. But finally,
- 7:24Speaker 3: one night, a couple of weeks later, something did happen.
- 7:27Speaker 3: I was sitting with Kitty watching the crowd at the
- 7:30Speaker 3: Texas Trail.
- 7:32Speaker 9: I'll fetch your drink. Mat.
- 7:35Speaker 4: No, thanks, Kitty.
- 7:37Speaker 9: You're packing trouble if some kind, aren't you.
- 7:40Speaker 4: It seems to me I got enough trouble already.
- 7:43Speaker 9: No, Matt, I hate to say it, but I think
- 7:46Speaker 9: half the people and Dodge believe you're guilty.
- 7:48Speaker 3: Yeah, sure, and the other half just doesn't care one
- 7:50Speaker 3: way or the other.
- 7:52Speaker 8: Well, I don't think you are, don't you.
- 7:55Speaker 9: Of course I don't.
- 7:57Speaker 4: And why don't we talk about something else? Edgie? Sure,
- 8:00Speaker 4: I met you. I stayed that way. They keep from
- 8:02Speaker 4: falling asleep, all of them.
- 8:03Speaker 9: I don't get all riled up. I didn't mean anything.
- 8:08Speaker 3: I'm sorry, Kitty. I guess this business is getting all
- 8:13Speaker 3: my nerves after all.
- 8:14Speaker 9: Well, I should think it would. Why don't you go
- 8:16Speaker 9: and get good and drunk to get.
- 8:18Speaker 4: The whole thing that way, Kitty? If I ever got drunk,
- 8:21Speaker 4: I could name you ten men. Right.
- 8:23Speaker 3: Aaron Dodd showed cut cards for the honor of shooting
- 8:26Speaker 3: me down, mister.
- 8:27Speaker 10: Dylon Kites, get on, thank you. I've been down to
- 8:35Speaker 10: telegraph office, mister Dylan.
- 8:37Speaker 5: Oh, and the news, yes, but you won't like it here.
- 8:42Speaker 5: It is a telegraph from Washington, d C.
- 8:46Speaker 4: How do you know I won't like it?
- 8:48Speaker 5: Well, you see how I was standing there when he
- 8:51Speaker 5: was writing it out, and I couldn't help watching work
- 8:55Speaker 5: and all that.
- 8:55Speaker 4: I don't want to read a Chester. You told me
- 8:57Speaker 4: what it says.
- 8:57Speaker 5: So was it from the War Department? And it says
- 9:01Speaker 5: they heard from the governor? And you'd better read it,
- 9:07Speaker 5: mister Dillan.
- 9:07Speaker 3: Now you're doing fine, Go ahead, Well you're suspended.
- 9:14Speaker 5: What you're suspended from us, marshall, mister Dyllon. And to
- 9:18Speaker 5: make it legal and formal, like they're sending somebody to
- 9:21Speaker 5: arrest you and take up the Hayes City for trial.
- 9:24Speaker 5: I don't believe it, neither done this kitty, but that's
- 9:27Speaker 5: what it says. It's the only way they see how
- 9:29Speaker 5: to clear this up.
- 9:30Speaker 8: Proper, even Dylan, just kidding. Oh, I see Chester beat
- 9:39Speaker 8: me back for the news.
- 9:40Speaker 5: But how do you know about this Samples.
- 9:42Speaker 8: I am just as interested in this business as you are. Chester,
- 9:45Speaker 8: So I sort of talk to Clerk into giving me
- 9:47Speaker 8: a copy of that telegram after you'd left. Well, you've
- 9:50Speaker 8: got no doubts like Chester.
- 9:52Speaker 4: It doesn't matter, Dylan, God is.
- 9:55Speaker 8: Going to breathe a lot easier now that you're suspended.
- 9:59Speaker 8: It won't be around as Marshall.
- 10:03Speaker 4: I'm still around Samples.
- 10:05Speaker 8: But you're not Marshall anymore. You won't be around for
- 10:09Speaker 8: long anyway.
- 10:12Speaker 4: Tell me something, Samples. Sure, with me out of officer,
- 10:16Speaker 4: you're going to be breathing easier too.
- 10:20Speaker 8: I'll tell you, Dylan, there are two reasons I'll be
- 10:23Speaker 8: glad to see you hang. One is for murdering my partner.
- 10:29Speaker 4: And the other well, I.
- 10:32Speaker 8: Always heard you were too strict here, and I like
- 10:35Speaker 8: to do a little gambling now and then. Oh, in fact,
- 10:39Speaker 8: I'm thinking of running a few tables myself. I see
- 10:44Speaker 8: more fun without some hard nos law man looking over
- 10:47Speaker 8: your shoulder all the time.
- 10:50Speaker 4: You understand, yeah, yeah, I understand.
- 10:52Speaker 8: Well, i'll see you at the trial. I hope I'm
- 10:57Speaker 8: around when I come to arrest you, Dylan.
- 11:00Speaker 4: You probably will be.
- 11:03Speaker 6: So what's he.
- 11:07Speaker 5: Talking about, mister Dylan? You're being two street. There's plenty
- 11:10Speaker 5: of gambling going on in Dodge right.
- 11:12Speaker 9: Now, not his kind of gambling.
- 11:14Speaker 5: What do you mean?
- 11:15Speaker 4: Well, he told me he's buying up cattle and getting
- 11:18Speaker 4: himself a thick ratch.
- 11:20Speaker 3: But he's probably going to finance it from his gambling,
- 11:22Speaker 3: and that takes a lot of money.
- 11:25Speaker 4: Sure, steady money. And I've always run crooked gamblers out
- 11:30Speaker 4: of Dodge.
- 11:31Speaker 9: Not what you're gonna do?
- 11:32Speaker 3: I don't know, kiddy. I sure like to have a
- 11:35Speaker 3: talk with that witness of there is, Jim Huggins.
- 11:38Speaker 4: I can't find him. I got him hit out someplace.
- 11:43Speaker 9: Not Is it something I can do?
- 11:45Speaker 7: No?
- 11:46Speaker 4: Nothing, Kiddy?
- 11:47Speaker 11: That thanks anyway?
- 12:00Speaker 5: Oh, there she comes, mister Dylon, right on time.
- 12:07Speaker 4: Are there not many people at the depot this morning? Another?
- 12:09Speaker 5: No, sir, But anyway, I'm glad I talked you into
- 12:11Speaker 5: walking down here with me. There is just nothing pleasures
- 12:15Speaker 5: mean more and watching the train come in at.
- 12:17Speaker 4: Least that doesn't cost then, I thank you.
- 12:20Speaker 5: My I'd like to drive one of them, wouldn't you,
- 12:23Speaker 5: mister Dillon?
- 12:24Speaker 4: Are they're too noisy for me? Chestera, Hello Marshall, Hello John.
- 12:28Speaker 5: Maybe if I talk to the stand a few people,
- 12:30Speaker 5: they'd let me try it sometime.
- 12:31Speaker 3: You think, Hey, wait a minute, what over there? Just
- 12:35Speaker 3: gotting off the man with the long hair.
- 12:37Speaker 5: Well, I'll be it while Bill Hiccott.
- 12:40Speaker 4: It sure is? Hey Phil, Hey Bill, Hello Matthew, how
- 12:52Speaker 4: are you.
- 12:53Speaker 7: So how are you Chester?
- 12:55Speaker 8: Fine? Mister he got this fine?
- 12:57Speaker 4: That's quite a surprise. Why didn't you let me know
- 12:58Speaker 4: you were coming?
- 13:00Speaker 7: I didn't know myself till just before I left abiling?
- 13:03Speaker 4: How is appleine these days?
- 13:05Speaker 7: I'm still a sheriff there. Yes, I will be till
- 13:09Speaker 7: somebody gets around. They're shooting me.
- 13:11Speaker 5: Nobody's gonna shoot you and mister Hickock, Hey keep trying
- 13:15Speaker 5: just to me.
- 13:16Speaker 4: They keep missing too, don't they, Bill?
- 13:18Speaker 7: And so far? Maybe that's just because nobody's tried to
- 13:22Speaker 7: shoot me in the back?
- 13:23Speaker 4: Yead Hey, you've always worried about that, haven't you.
- 13:28Speaker 7: I'll tell you something, Matt, but I don't think i'd
- 13:32Speaker 7: mind so much if I was to be shot by
- 13:34Speaker 7: a man like you, but me, they might take it
- 13:41Speaker 7: in mind to try it. I never could tell which
- 13:44Speaker 7: way he was going to jump next? Right right now?
- 13:49Speaker 4: Wait a minute, Oh, you came here to.
- 13:54Speaker 3: Arrest me, didn't you. That's what I come for. Yeah, sure,
- 14:01Speaker 3: mtn't know. They wouldn't send a ten hordon.
- 14:03Speaker 7: I guess they figured you might not take easy matter.
- 14:07Speaker 7: I tried to tell them they could lose a good
- 14:09Speaker 7: loanman this way. We're a pretty fair match you and me.
- 14:14Speaker 4: Yeah, hell we are.
- 14:18Speaker 7: Well that's your play though, No, I guess that can
- 14:28Speaker 7: wait a while. Okay, I'm still I'm salary man. So
- 14:36Speaker 7: let's go have ourselves drink. Good you too, chested, Thank you.
- 14:44Speaker 8: I'd be right proud to me pick up.
- 14:48Speaker 7: I figure if I get a couple of drinks in
- 14:51Speaker 7: your matter, I might worm your side of this business
- 14:53Speaker 7: out of you.
- 14:54Speaker 4: Why Bell, don't you believe that? Said?
- 14:56Speaker 7: Well, I've seen you pretty mean and ornery. But even
- 15:01Speaker 7: if I was to watch you judged in the humboard,
- 15:04Speaker 7: I still wouldn't believe Matt Billon killed an unarmed man.
- 15:08Speaker 7: Thanks Bill, A girl headed this one?
- 15:12Speaker 5: It kitty, Yes, siry, sure, man, I've been looking everywhere
- 15:17Speaker 5: for you.
- 15:18Speaker 9: Well, it's Bill here cock.
- 15:19Speaker 7: Hello, Kitty, how are you?
- 15:21Speaker 9: I'm fine? What are you doing in Dods?
- 15:23Speaker 7: Well, I sort of come on business.
- 15:26Speaker 4: You said you were looking for the kiddy, mad I
- 15:29Speaker 4: know where he is?
- 15:30Speaker 9: Where who is the witness has been hiding? Jim Huggins
- 15:34Speaker 9: red samples in the Texas Trail drinking last night, and
- 15:36Speaker 9: the bartender heard him tell one of his gunmen to
- 15:38Speaker 9: take some food out to the loft at the Okay.
- 15:40Speaker 3: Stable Bill, you know why you're buying me a drink?
- 15:46Speaker 3: I think I kind of like to buy kidding one.
- 15:56Speaker 3: Later on, back at my office, I explained the situation
- 15:59Speaker 3: that Bill hick Doc and we talked it over, and
- 16:03Speaker 3: then we sat around the rest of the day talking
- 16:05Speaker 3: about old times.
- 16:08Speaker 4: And people and horses and guns and along. About evening
- 16:14Speaker 4: we went.
- 16:14Speaker 3: Up and laid out our plan to Doc Adams. As
- 16:19Speaker 3: soon as it got dark, we went over to the
- 16:22Speaker 3: Okay stable and took Jim Huggins out of the loft
- 16:26Speaker 3: and got him across the street up the Duck's.
- 16:28Speaker 4: Office before he was real sure what was happening.
- 16:32Speaker 8: Put him on the couch there. Gentlemen, we want him
- 16:35Speaker 8: to be comfortable.
- 16:37Speaker 7: What are you doing with me, Huggins?
- 16:39Speaker 4: Do what Doc says.
- 16:44Speaker 8: Yeah, that's fine, Huggins. Now then you just relax.
- 16:50Speaker 7: When's Chester going to get here.
- 16:51Speaker 4: He'll be along though.
- 16:54Speaker 7: Who you have never seen you before? Mister, You're going
- 16:57Speaker 7: to see me double before the night, So hey.
- 17:01Speaker 6: Never mind I didn't. You'll find out now.
- 17:04Speaker 7: Then.
- 17:04Speaker 6: Now you tell me, have you ever had any heart trouble?
- 17:08Speaker 7: Heart trouble?
- 17:09Speaker 6: Yes, you ever have dizzey spells?
- 17:11Speaker 8: Faint?
- 17:12Speaker 9: I have to lie down.
- 17:13Speaker 6: Suddenly anything like that.
- 17:15Speaker 8: Well, a horse kicked me in the head once, made
- 17:18Speaker 8: me awful dizzy. I'm asking about your heart, not your brains.
- 17:23Speaker 8: I don't want anybody to die here.
- 17:25Speaker 6: The business is bad enough. What are you gonna do
- 17:28Speaker 6: with me?
- 17:29Speaker 4: What that's all about?
- 17:29Speaker 7: It? Over here?
- 17:30Speaker 6: Chester? I got it.
- 17:34Speaker 5: I got plenty of head scared.
- 17:35Speaker 6: Just put them on the table head chest and.
- 17:38Speaker 8: There's three quarters. Well, this is a man we're working on,
- 17:44Speaker 8: not an elephant chest.
- 17:45Speaker 5: Well, I wanted to be sure there was enough.
- 17:47Speaker 4: Doc opened one up in Chester.
- 17:48Speaker 5: There's a glass there, Yes, there, your arms are doing.
- 17:57Speaker 8: What is that?
- 17:59Speaker 4: What are you doing?
- 18:00Speaker 3: It's nothing but good whiskey, Huggins for once in your life.
- 18:03Speaker 3: You're gonna drink all of it?
- 18:05Speaker 4: You want maybe a little more here?
- 18:09Speaker 8: Oh no, I don't want to drink all that whiskey, Marshall.
- 18:13Speaker 6: I couldn't hold all that.
- 18:14Speaker 3: Now you can drink it slow, Huggins, that you're gonna
- 18:17Speaker 3: drink it. They go on, go on, get started.
- 18:52Speaker 4: You're sure you got it all though?
- 18:55Speaker 7: Just about man, eh, she is going to read it over.
- 19:03Speaker 4: Oh you heard.
- 19:04Speaker 8: Everything I didn't very well, gentlemen, your friend Huggins has
- 19:09Speaker 8: got one of the biggest hangovers coming up.
- 19:12Speaker 6: Any man will have to endure it.
- 19:14Speaker 4: Is he still out duck.
- 19:15Speaker 6: He won't have hurt him any of that. I said,
- 19:17Speaker 6: just to op some coffee.
- 19:19Speaker 7: I could use little coffee myself.
- 19:21Speaker 6: There be enough.
- 19:22Speaker 8: Oh he Wasn't it something how that Huggins talked once
- 19:25Speaker 8: he got started. I told you, you get enough whiskey
- 19:28Speaker 8: in the man, and he'd start bragging.
- 19:29Speaker 7: Oh he was sure, right, Doc, He's not gonna feel
- 19:32Speaker 7: so big and smart when he wakes up.
- 19:34Speaker 8: Yeah, I don't know.
- 19:35Speaker 6: The man was half drunk. He may not even remember
- 19:37Speaker 6: what he said.
- 19:38Speaker 7: You'll remember when we tell him. We even know where
