- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Today is the feast of St.
- 0:02SPEAKER_00: Teresa of Jesus, St.
- 0:04SPEAKER_00: Teresa of Nabila,
- 0:05SPEAKER_00: who's an incredible saint and doc of the Church,
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: beautiful and author of many moving things.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: I love the Carmelites, especially Teresa and John of the Cross.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: It's very worth reading, but Teresa of Nabila is also Very human.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: That's one of the things that you will immediately understand if you pick up her books.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: I mean, she was the cause of the conversion of St.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: Peter Stein,
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: who took the name Teresa Benedetta of the Cross,
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: and she was a famous Jewish intellectual in Germany just before
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: the Second World War,
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: who was converted to Catholicism pretty much by reading the autobiography of St.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: Teresa that way,
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: because she took it Down from the shelf when she was sort of,
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: you know, an early feminist and the advocate for women's rights.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: And then she found this book and she found this incredible woman,
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: this incredible,
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: strong, vivacious, the very human person who was held up by the church.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: She never read anything like that.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: Teresa of Abba says things like,
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: there's one time when she had trouble,
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: I think they were sort of crossing where she was trying
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: to found these different monasteries.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: And, you know, they almost drowned and the river was flooded, et cetera.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: So she got out of it.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: And she said to Jesus, she said, well, this is the way you treat your friends.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: No wonder you don't have very many about them.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: That's the sort of thing she would say.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: So that's the way that she was, right?
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: She's a very human person.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: She wasn't afraid to be honest with God.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: She wasn't afraid to treat God like a friend and to complain if,
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: you know, she felt like she wasn't being very treated or if, you know, whatever.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: That's Teresa of Abba.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: She's a wonderful person,
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: a wonderful saint, wonderful author and a wonderful human being so filled with life.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: And she actually came to Jesus in a real sense at about 40 years of age.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: She had sort of squandered much of her early life.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: So she later on encountered Jesus and then had an incredible spiritual growth from there.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: So it's never too late.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: It's never too late to encounter God.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: God's always on offer.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: We can always come to God.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: We can come to God today.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: We can encounter God today.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: Our lives can be transformed today and with the help and with the inspiration
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: of saints like Saint Teresa of Abola,
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: we too can become amazing saints But above all, by being ourselves.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: When we draw close to God, we don't become less of ourselves.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: We become more of ourselves.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: An amazing, original, crazy person that God has made each one of us to be.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: That is unleashed when we take away the slavery to sin and when we turn our lives to God.
