Transcript
- 0:19Speaker 1: Hello, Emily here, and yes, I appreciate all of the
- 0:25Speaker 1: care and concern messages to those of you who may
- 0:28Speaker 1: have listened to Wednesday's episode.
- 0:31Speaker 2: Good news, my voice is back.
- 0:35Speaker 1: And I appreciate you for sticking with me as I
- 0:38Speaker 1: recovered from cheering my heart out last weekend in Chicago.
- 0:44Speaker 1: I am so grateful to be back home. I don't
- 0:47Speaker 1: have a single flight booked at the moment, and as
- 0:50Speaker 1: much as I love, love, love the opportunity to travel
- 0:54Speaker 1: for what I do, it is so nice to be
- 0:58Speaker 1: hanging out in Brooklyn and getting things done, catching up
- 1:03Speaker 1: a little bit. It's been an interesting week back here
- 1:06Speaker 1: in Brooklyn. I was able to finally get into physical
- 1:10Speaker 1: therapy for the first time since the marathon. My foot
- 1:13Speaker 1: is still presenting the same annoying plantar fasciitis pain that
- 1:18Speaker 1: I was navigating before and after and during the marathon,
- 1:24Speaker 1: and so we decided that it would be my best
- 1:28Speaker 1: interest to avoid running for the time being, which makes
- 1:33Speaker 1: this now more than ever, the perfect time.
- 1:36Speaker 2: For me to be starting a new strength training program
- 1:40Speaker 2: using the Future app on Monday.
- 1:43Speaker 1: Spoiler alert, I know that I've talked about the Future
- 1:46Speaker 1: app before on the show. Future Is about to come
- 1:49Speaker 1: on as one of Hurdle's newest sponsors. It all really
- 1:53Speaker 1: just kind of happened serendipitously, so I will definitely be
- 1:56Speaker 1: sharing my experience with that app what it's all about
- 2:00Speaker 1: out in an upcoming episode. I digress. There are a
- 2:05Speaker 1: lot of things right now in my life that feel
- 2:07Speaker 1: as though they are happening serendipitously. And when I say
- 2:11Speaker 1: that my life coach, I feel like this all sounds
- 2:15Speaker 1: so woo woo ee. Well, she calls it being in alignment. Now,
- 2:20Speaker 1: let's see if I can give you an example. I
- 2:22Speaker 1: wanted to plan a really large event for New York
- 2:25Speaker 1: City Marathon week, and in the execution, in the first
- 2:30Speaker 1: stages of planning said event, I was met with a
- 2:34Speaker 1: lot of resilience and a fair amount of no Still,
- 2:37Speaker 1: I promised myself that I would do anything and everything
- 2:40Speaker 1: within my power to make it happen. I was at
- 2:44Speaker 1: a meeting, let's say, the week after a slew of
- 2:47Speaker 1: these no's, when I was telling a friend who happens
- 2:51Speaker 1: to work for a sizable brand that I was dreaming
- 2:57Speaker 1: of a space that would hold one hundred and fift
- 3:00Speaker 1: to two hundred people and it would just pop out
- 3:02Speaker 1: and be perfect for me, which, if you know anything
- 3:04Speaker 1: about New York City, a space that can hold one
- 3:07Speaker 1: hundred and fifty to two hundred people.
- 3:09Speaker 2: Is typically pretty pricey.
- 3:12Speaker 1: Anyway, out of nowhere, she goes, wait, we have a space,
- 3:16Speaker 1: and I just looked at her and my mouth dropped.
- 3:20Speaker 2: Long story short.
- 3:21Speaker 1: A few meetings later, we've talked logistics, I got the space.
- 3:26Speaker 1: The event is happening if you're in the New York
- 3:28Speaker 1: City area and you will be during New York City
- 3:31Speaker 1: Marathon week. Hold on your calendar November second, Wednesday evening.
- 3:36Speaker 2: More details to come in the show.
- 3:38Speaker 1: But that was just one of those things that I
- 3:41Speaker 1: felt like when I put something into the universe, it
- 3:45Speaker 1: just came back to me. And then I asked four
- 3:49Speaker 1: different people to work with me on the event, and
- 3:52Speaker 1: each and every one of them not only happened to
- 3:54Speaker 1: be available, but was super stoked on the concept. If
- 3:59Speaker 1: you want to talk more serendipitous things, I was literally
- 4:04Speaker 1: sitting at my desk thinking of a friend I hadn't
- 4:06Speaker 1: spoken to in a minute.
- 4:08Speaker 2: I saw him not.
- 4:09Speaker 1: All that long ago in Arizona, and I went to
- 4:12Speaker 1: go pick up my phone to text him, and I
- 4:15Speaker 1: got a call from him that he was in the
- 4:18Speaker 1: city through the weekend and he wanted to get together. Truly,
- 4:21Speaker 1: these are just two examples of I would say, two
- 4:26Speaker 1: handfuls of ways that things are just.
- 4:28Speaker 2: Kind of happening at the moment, and I.
- 4:32Speaker 1: When life feels and easy is a weird word to
- 4:36Speaker 1: use here, but I feel as though I have been
- 4:38Speaker 1: through so many moments this year where life has felt
- 4:41Speaker 1: really hard that when life feels like this, I just
- 4:44Speaker 1: have such a grand appreciation for it. But I also
- 4:47Speaker 1: take note and understand that there are things that aren't
- 4:50Speaker 1: peachy right now for me. Right my foot is dramatically
- 4:55Speaker 1: not it's no buno walking around throughout my day like
- 4:58Speaker 1: there's some pain there. I think about some certain things
- 5:02Speaker 1: that I'm dealing with in my personal life, and you
- 5:05Speaker 1: know that's not all rosy either. But despite these struggles,
- 5:09Speaker 1: I choose to look at the silver linings live my
- 5:14Speaker 1: life focusing on feeling good and seeking the good, and hey,
- 5:21Speaker 1: that's the best that I can do.
- 5:22Speaker 2: Right.
- 5:23Speaker 1: So my listener prompt for you this week is maybe
- 5:28Speaker 1: more of a call to action. How can you choose
- 5:33Speaker 1: purposefully to focus more on the good. How can you
- 5:38Speaker 1: choose purposefully to focus more on the good and now
- 5:44Speaker 1: A listener question.
- 5:46Speaker 3: Hey Emily, this is Becca. I'm from north of Boston.
- 5:50Speaker 3: Love the podcast. My question for you is during the pandemic,
- 5:56Speaker 3: I got into weightlifting for the first time and just
- 6:00Speaker 3: due to COVID, I was doing it mostly at home
- 6:05Speaker 3: and I recently rejoined the gym and have wanted to
- 6:11Speaker 3: kind of start using their equipment at the gym and
- 6:14Speaker 3: the first time I went to kind of get through
- 6:17Speaker 3: this hurdle. Thanks, love the pod.
- 6:19Speaker 2: Bye, Hey Beca, I love this question.
- 6:22Speaker 1: The good news is that there are a lot of
- 6:24Speaker 1: options for you when it comes to following along with
- 6:27Speaker 1: programming on your own time at the gym. My biggest
- 6:31Speaker 1: tip would be to find a trainer that you really
- 6:34Speaker 1: connect with and see where they're offering their programming. So
- 6:39Speaker 1: maybe it's someone that you follow on social media. Just
- 6:43Speaker 1: make sure that that person has appropriate and relevant certifications
- 6:48Speaker 1: that they are actually knowledgeable in the material that they
- 6:53Speaker 1: are coaching you on. You're going to look for a
- 6:55Speaker 1: certified trainer, a certified strength and conditioning specialist, physical therapist,
- 7:01Speaker 1: someone that really has the knowledge to make sure that
- 7:04Speaker 1: they are keeping their clientele, including you safe. Now not
- 7:09Speaker 1: everyone has the budget to do one on one training.
- 7:13Speaker 1: This is where an app, again like the Future app,
- 7:15Speaker 1: can come in, which really makes it more accessible at
- 7:18Speaker 1: a lower price point. But beyond that, there are so
- 7:21Speaker 1: many other on demand workouts, many of which do have
- 7:25Speaker 1: options that involve strength training.
- 7:28Speaker 2: The last thing I.
- 7:28Speaker 1: Will say is that if you really are focused on
- 7:32Speaker 1: strength training, on progressive overload over time, which is essentially
- 7:38Speaker 1: increasing the demands on your muscular skeleton system to continually
- 7:43Speaker 1: make gains in muscle strength and size and endurance over time,
- 7:47Speaker 1: you are going to really want to seek out someone
- 7:51Speaker 1: to create custom programming for you.
- 7:53Speaker 2: You are going to want.
- 7:54Speaker 1: A program that does progress instead of just selecting ran
- 8:00Speaker 1: the fun strength workouts here and there.
- 8:03Speaker 2: I hope that makes sense.
- 8:04Speaker 1: Of course, if you have any more questions on this topic,
- 8:07Speaker 1: if you need anything else, you can always call in
- 8:09Speaker 1: and leave a voice message. I am always hunting listener questions.
- 8:13Speaker 1: The link to do that is in the show notes.
- 8:16Speaker 1: Make sure you're following along with Hurdle over on social
- 8:18Speaker 1: It's at Hurdle Podcast and I am over at Emily
- 8:22Speaker 1: a Body Another Hurdle Conquered.
- 8:25Speaker 2: Catch you guys next time.
