- 0:19Hello and welcome back to Inside Quotes,
- 0:20the show where my brother and I rewatch,
- 0:22review, and relive the staples of our childhood.
- 0:25This is episode one hundred and fifty-five,
- 0:28and I'm your host Jeremy, and with me today is my older brother Jonathan.
- 0:32Jonathan, welcome back to the show.
- 0:34Quack quack everybody, it's great to be back on the show.
- 0:37Jeremy, today we are joined by someone who worked on Disney's Pirates
- 0:41of the Caribbean ride.
- 0:43~ the right.
- 0:46Yes.
- 0:47Which of course became the movie.
- 0:50Well, the ride existed before the movie.
- 0:53Precisely.
- 0:55That's what I just said.
- 0:57No, no, no, no, no. What you said was that the ride became the movie.
- 1:00What I'm saying is that the movie became because of the ride.
- 1:07Okay.
- 1:09And therefore, if Kyle worked on the ride,
- 1:15Yes.
- 1:16And the ride is inspired by the movie.
- 1:20Yes.
- 1:22Then in a manner of speaking, Kyle
- 1:25Here we go.
- 1:26worked on the movie.
- 1:28He did not work on the movie, Jeremy.
- 1:30But without the ride there would be no movie.
- 1:32That's not necessarily true.
- 1:34Unless of
- 1:35course were that the Kyle would be working on the ride,
- 1:38Kyle wouldn't have worked on the thing that became the movie that wouldn't have
- 1:43existed the without the ride.
- 1:46That sentence got away from you.
- 1:48The sentence knows
- 1:49where it's going.
- 1:49Kyle, welcome to Inside Quotes.
- 1:52Thank you.
- 1:52A man
- 1:52who worked
- 1:53on Pirates of the Caribbean before Pirates of the Caribbean was the Pirates
- 1:57of the Caribbean.
- 1:59That's technically true.
- 2:01Sevy.
- 2:01Somewhat.
- 2:03That was the second best installment
- 2:04No, his name is Kyle.
- 2:06of the franchise that y'all just did.
- 2:07Yeah.
- 2:07That was that was great.
- 2:08Yeah.
- 2:09Why, thank you. That was probably my
- 2:11Mm.
- 2:11worst ever Jack Sparrow impression.
- 2:13Meaning you
- 2:13Mm.
- 2:13have multiple Jack Sparrow impressions?
- 2:15Well, I tried earlier and I I I d no,
- 2:20I
- 2:20can't do it very well. So
- 2:20Gotcha. Well,
- 2:22I want to be the first to congratulate you guys on just what a huge get this
- 2:25is for your podcast. And I'm like trying to be humble,
- 2:28but like if I was in your shoes and I was a guest on this podcast,
- 2:34like that would be thrilling to me because when you think of the amount
- 2:38of people that have actually worked on the ride and who are still alive,
- 2:43it's definitely less than five thousand people.
- 2:45So
- 2:46~ they're a small
- 2:46Yeah.
- 2:48pool to draw from, but you got one.
- 2:50Yeah, but you're our first
- 2:50You gotta fish.
- 2:51ever Disney employee. Disney official.
- 2:53Yes, I also have
- 2:55the dirt. That's the other reason why this is such a big get,
- 2:57is I No,
- 2:58He's also not working there anymore.
- 3:01so ~ the lawyers can try to find me.
- 3:03They have no idea where I am. It's gonna take a minute.
- 3:06They probably can, but I keep moving.
- 3:08~ I will spill any of the dirt.
- 3:08If you're a lawyer, you can follow us on Inside
- 3:11Quotes Cast on Instagram. That's where you'll find us.
- 3:15You y you have a big big legal community following?
- 3:18It says podcast big with the ~ the Yale graduates.
- 3:22About to.
- 3:22~
- 3:23hopefully.
- 3:25Yep, so that's the other thing.
- 3:26If you want to have a bonus segment where I just ~ air all
- 3:29of Disney's dirty laundry, I am more than happy to do that.
- 3:34We'll have to see. We'll have to see.
- 3:36See where the see where it takes
- 3:36Yeah, we should have had you on sooner.
- 3:36See how much time we have.
- 3:38us.
- 3:38We've been doing this whole series of movies based on Disney attractions
- 3:42and we could have seen what you knew
- 3:42I've noticed.
- 3:43about you know,
- 3:44Ha.
- 3:45like do you have any dirt on the country bears?
- 3:45Brian DePalmas 2000.
- 3:48boy, do I have dirt.
- 3:50I don't know if I want to know.
- 3:51You don't want to know what goes backstage.
- 3:53The country bears. It's not all it's not all pots of honey,
- 3:59let me tell you that. ~
- 4:00Okay, okay.
- 4:01Why would they have honey?
- 4:02so
- 4:02I have noticed y'all y'all have been doing a project.
- 4:05You've been doing the movies of the rides.
- 4:08And
- 4:09Yes.
- 4:11You you've you've been doing your homework.
- 4:13The fact that you did Mission to Mars means that you are doing your homework.
- 4:16You do know that Brian De Palma directed a movie based off the simulator,
- 4:22Mission to Mars. That's been memory-hold,
- 4:25nobody remembers it. but
- 4:27Uh-huh.
- 4:28Yeah, we had to find a YouTube
- 4:29video of it from like someone had had it on a home video
- 4:32Mm-hmm.
- 4:32from like the eighties or something.
- 4:34Mm.
- 4:35The ri the ride or movie? Well the movie's from two thousand.
- 4:38the no, we had to look up the ride on YouTube and it was from someone's like h yeah,
- 4:38The ride. Yeah.
- 4:42home video yeah.
- 4:44Yeah.
- 4:45Now I think both the movie
- 4:45And the movie was hard to find too.
- 4:47and the ride are just kind of like a artifact of of time.
- 4:51But ~
- 4:51The fact that the
- 4:52ride was closed down before the movie came out that's it's
- 4:55That probably didn't help
- 4:56anything. That was not the movie's biggest problem,
- 4:57I'll I'll also show you how much we've been doing our homework.
- 5:00yeah.
- 5:01I bought this on eBay just so we could watch this.
- 5:02I was just about to ask you. I was just about to tell you.
- 5:04Just so we can watch this for next episode.
- 5:05Ha ha.
- 5:06I was gonna say you are missing one and
- 5:07The Tower of Terror starring Steve Gutenberg
- 5:11Are we gonna have
- 5:12to have Kyle on for that? I've never seen so much passion for Steve Gutenberg.
- 5:13and Kirsten Dunst. ~
- 5:16That's right. That's right.
- 5:18my friend, that is because it is twenty twenty six.
- 5:21If I took you back to I don't know,
- 5:24nineteen eighty-six, Steve Gutenberg was bigger than Elvis.
- 5:31I don't know where he is now. Now that we have a legal community that
- 5:32Mm-hmm. He He makes he makes hopeful and uplifting TikToks.
- 5:32I'll take that.
- 5:35is following the show, if we can have some lawyers try to find You know where Steve
- 5:38That's
- 5:39He made he's a TikToker.
- 5:40Gutenberg
- 5:41is?
- 5:41Yeah. Mm-hmm.
- 5:43I saw him on a news story because he was a part of the Palisades wildfires
- 5:48and he was like helping people.
- 5:49He was like helping people in the community,
- 5:51volunteering and stuff.
- 5:53We literally had to burn down the Palisades to find Steve
- 5:56Gutenberg. That is
- 5:56~ no.
- 5:58how how deep in hiding this guy has been.
- 6:01But yes, there is
- 6:02Well, ever since he coached that soccer
- 6:04team back in the nineties, he's just really fell off.
- 6:07Mm. It he's that a real ~ Tower of Terror drop in his career.
- 6:12I I have never seen this movie before,
- 6:12It yeah.
- 6:14Kirsten Dunst as so
- 6:15so I'm I'm looking forward to watching it.
- 6:17So that one is a ~ made for T V A B C what was that?
- 6:22W Wonderful World of Disney, yes.
- 6:23Wonderful world of Disney. No.
- 6:26Nineteen ninety-five, I wanna say?
- 6:28You checked it back. Ninety six,
- 6:30ninety seven? Ninety seven, final answer.
- 6:30Mm. I I wanna say ninety seven.
- 6:33Yeah.
- 6:33Okay. Yeah, so Steve Gutenberg and Kirsten Dunst.
- 6:37Kind of different trajectories and they meet right in the middle there.
- 6:39Career trajectories, yeah.
- 6:39Traded Fames Wow.
- 6:41Yeah, this is kind of where they meet.
- 6:43Now I did have
- 6:44that movie on VHS. I had the clamshell.
- 6:46Okay. Okay.
- 6:48once again, I cannot tell you a single thing that happens,
- 6:51except that there's a tower, and some pretty terrifying things happen.
- 6:55Pretty
- 6:55Mm-hmm.
- 6:56sure there's an elevator. Lots of ups and downs in that movie.
- 6:59Yeah.
- 7:01Well, there's your review so far.
- 7:03I almost ha I almost invited
- 7:03Okay. Yeah.
- 7:05you on our next episode too.
- 7:07Alright, what's let me see, what would be the next Okay,
- 7:11so two thousand three. I don't remember the chronology of that entire year,
- 7:18but I think if you haven't done it already,
- 7:20it should be Eddie Murphy and the Haunted Mansion?
- 7:22That is going to be our Halloween special that we have
- 7:22Mm-hmm. Halloween pick.
- 7:25Mm-hmm.
- 7:27Bryce Bridgman on every year. So
- 7:29Mm-hmm.
- 7:30we're gonna cover all three of them.
- 7:32But mainly the Eddie Murphy one.
- 7:34Okay, there's three haunted mansions.
- 7:36There's the Muppets one that came out,
- 7:37and then there's a scarier
- 7:38Muppets. Gotcha.
- 7:39Mm-hmm.
- 7:40Danny DeVito version that just came out on streaming like three years ago.
- 7:43Yes, I remember that one. I think it came out
- 7:43So
- 7:46in feeders because I was working at Disney when it came out.
- 7:49Okay. Wow.
- 7:49It
- 7:50was a little bit longer than that.
- 7:51Yeah.
- 7:52Well the Muppets one is just like a little special and it's not even good because
- 7:58it has Matt Vogel.
- 7:58There's a Muppets
- 8:00Media item that is not good.
- 8:05Did Jason Seagal not ride it? What happened?
- 8:08Probably not. No. You mean King Midas of the Muppet World?
- 8:08He didn't. No. If if the ~ Kermit is
- 8:13Yeah.
- 8:15If Kermit's voiced by Matt Vogel,
- 8:17then we're just like we're out immediately from the start.
- 8:18Yeah, it's just gross. He He's not even
- 8:19We can't accept his voice.
- 8:20Did they
- 8:21did he ever get back together with
- 8:21trying to sound like Kermit.
- 8:22Miss Piggy? I remember that was a big PR nightmare we had it.
- 8:26More
- 8:26on and off.
- 8:27Mm. Yeah. Mm-hmm.
- 8:29That was tough one.
- 8:29I think they've worked some things out.
- 8:31postmodern
- 8:31Muppets, I don't really know if that's working.
- 8:32Yeah. I I was
- 8:33I saw their wedding in Manhattan and everything,
- 8:35but it's it's a shame.
- 8:37They really took Manhattan, didn't they?
- 8:39Will they ever give it back? Have to wait for the sequel.
- 8:43Mm-hmm.
- 8:44let's talk about a real movie because this movie is gonna take us forever
- 8:47to talk about, I'm sure of it.
- 8:48Probably the best, besides Country Bears,
- 8:51Disney attraction themed ride.
- 8:54Would you agree, everyone?
- 8:57Agreed. We have an accord.
- 8:58Alright, well that's all we need to hear.
- 9:00And then yeah, we have an accord.
- 9:01This is actually our second movie in a row where the main character wears
- 9:06a lot of eyeliner. How crazy is that?
- 9:11That is true. I will give you that one.
- 9:12Ha ha.
- 9:13They should have brought Gary Sinise back for this one.
- 9:17He's too spacey to be a piratey.
- 9:19He could not be a pirate. Actually,
- 9:21Spacey
- 9:21he might.
- 9:22as in as in like he goes to space in Apollo thirteen or spacey as in ~ Kevin Spacey,
- 9:27Kevin.
- 9:27'cause yeah, wood that would be pretty piratey to me.
- 9:30I Kevin Spacey has some pirate in there.
- 9:34Is he canceled still?
- 9:35Yeah.
- 9:36He's trying not to be, it's not working for him.
- 9:36Okay.
- 9:38Mm-hmm.
- 9:38~
- 9:38Okay.
- 9:40You can't uncancel yourself as it turns out.
- 9:40Let's make let's keep it that way.
- 9:43Ha
- 9:43ha ha.
- 9:44Alright, well, Kyle, we brought you on because you are an actual
- 9:49ex employee that actually worked on the actual ride of Pirates of the Caribbean.
- 9:54With that being said, Jonathan,
- 9:56do you have any history and fun facts about the Disney ride?
- 10:01All right, so before covering this movie,
- 10:05I wanted to watch the behind the attraction episode on Pirates of the Caribbean.
- 10:08So it's a it's a series on Disney Plus.
- 10:11It goes through a lot of the classic rides at Disneyland,
- 10:13Disney World, gives a little bit of history.
- 10:15This episode in particular talked a lot about the different iterations
- 10:20of the ride through time and at the different parks.
- 10:23So how it how it's evolved from
- 10:25one park to the next over time.
- 10:27~ but the the ride was inspired by Walt Disney's love
- 10:33of pirates. He was a big pirate fan of like the Treasure Island book was
- 10:38one of his favorites. And then you know,
- 10:40he saw all those old pirate movies from the early days of Hollywood and stuff.
- 10:44So he wanted some kind of story ~ revolving around pirates.
- 10:49So that's what kind of originated the idea for this ride.
- 10:52~
- 10:55And I had heard that he he did not he he passed before the ride ~
- 11:01was like open to the public. So he didn't get to see it in all its glory,
- 11:04but he did go on like a test version before he passed.
- 11:08So unfortunately he didn't get to see,
- 11:10you know, you know, on opening day.
- 11:12Is he one of the skeletons now?
- 11:12That's dark, Jeremy.
- 11:13Sorry.
- 11:16Everybody
- 11:17He's
- 11:17not one of the skeletons. The head is under the the under the ride.
- 11:17knows he's cryogenically frozen underground.
- 11:19Yeah, yeah.
- 11:22That is a question I got asked at least
- 11:24three times a day. Is Walt Disney's head under the ride?
- 11:27And the answer is
- 11:28Good to know.
- 11:28if it was, I would not be able to tell you.
- 11:30Yeah.
- 11:31But now that I don't work for the company No,
- 11:33Mm. No, no.
- 11:34that's a stupid, stupid
- 11:36Ha ha ha.
- 11:36theory. Of course his head is
- 11:37not under Pirates of the Caribbean.
- 11:39so one of the things that I I learned from from the episode was I know that
- 11:45the Pirates of the Caribbean ride is famous for like its waterfall.
- 11:49Like it it there's two waterfalls in the Disneyland version of the ride.
- 11:54There's only one at the Disney World version,
- 11:57and there's a reason for that.
- 11:58The one at Disneyland has a specific purpose for why it goes down even deeper.
- 12:04There's two waterfall versions.
- 12:05drops and it's because they're actually taking you outside of the park when that
- 12:10happens. So Disneyland
- 12:12Really?
- 12:12is very compact. They kind of found out quickly they were running out of room.
- 12:16And what they what they called it was you're going like beneath the berm.
- 12:21And the berm is like the border of Disneyland.
- 12:25And so it takes you underground and basically into like another building that's like
- 12:30outside of the park. Is that is this all true Kyle?
- 12:35You don't even need me. You go all did your homework.
- 12:36Ha ha ha.
- 12:38Yeah, yes, that that's pretty much true.
- 12:40Mm. Okay.
- 12:41~
- 12:42it's it's not necessarily outside of the park.
- 12:45I mean it might have been at the time.
- 12:46Mm hmm. It's still like Disney property,
- 12:46When you are looking at the rides,
- 12:49yes, it's still property. It sounds cooler to say that that way.
- 12:49right? I mean, yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
- 12:53Mm hmm.
- 12:54there's all sorts of weird zoning stuff.
- 12:56That's how
- 12:57Mm-hmm.
- 12:57you get a basketball court on top of the Matterhorn.
- 12:59But ~ if
- 13:00Yeah.
- 13:01you're looking at it backstage,
- 13:02that's what they call the area.
- 13:04behind the scenes. ~ the rides are just these giant green warehouses.
- 13:09They just look like regular warehouses.
- 13:11And the what's that's what they are.
- 13:13The illusion is, the magic is that everything is inside makes it look like
- 13:17a different world, but on the outside it's just a shell.
- 13:19And they're all pretty much on top of each other.
- 13:23Some of them, if you think like the way townhouses are kind of staggered,
- 13:26but they're all right next to each other.
- 13:28The break room on Pirates is actually butting right up against Indiana Jones.
- 13:34Indiana Jones and Pirates run right next to each other.
- 13:37So if I was to exit the break room of Pirates of the Caribbean,
- 13:41which I could not do during operating hours,
- 13:44I would come out inside the line for Indiana Jones.
- 13:47So a lot of people do not think
- 13:48okay. Hm.
- 13:49about how interconnected these rides are,
- 13:51but because of space, everything's
- 13:52Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
- 13:53Yeah.
- 13:53kind of budding up against its each other.
- 13:56Okay, okay. Yeah.
- 13:57So weird, okay.
- 14:00And I don't know if we said specifically,
- 14:02but you worked at Disneyland in California.
- 14:04Yes. I worked at Disneyland,
- 14:05So obviously that's the w the version that we're talking
- 14:07about.
- 14:08and I am a purist. I truly believe in my heart of hearts that Disneyland
- 14:13is the original and best of the Disney parks.
- 14:16I think all of the rides there are the
- 14:16Okay. Okay. Mm-hmm.
- 14:19superior versions with very few exceptions.
- 14:22Specifically Pirates. Pirates is the longest ride,
- 14:25and I think it is the most immersive and just the most pure Disney nostalgia that
- 14:31you can get. It's 16 minutes long.
- 14:34It's probably the most value you can get,
- 14:35Okay. Yeah. Mm-hmm. Yeah?
- 14:36and it's also the shortest line.
- 14:37For a line, yeah.
- 14:38It's the shortest line and it's the longest ride.
- 14:39Okay. Mm-hmm.
- 14:40So if we're talking pure value,
- 14:43that's the best ride
- 14:43to go on.
- 14:44Okay, good to know. See Jeremy and I have never even been to Disneyland,
- 14:49so this is like we've just only been
- 14:51Yeah.
- 14:51to the Florida parks, so it's on the bucket
- 14:52You guys are crazy.
- 14:53list.
- 14:54Well, some other behind the scenes stuff I saw was the reason the Florida
- 14:57~ park only has one waterfall is just because they can't go that deep.
- 15:02Like it has a l a low water table or something
- 15:04Mm-hmm.
- 15:05like that. Like they're just gonna be in the ocean if they go too far.
- 15:07Yeah, but
- 15:08Florida has a low water table?
- 15:10What do you know?
- 15:10Do either
- 15:11of these rides actually show the backside of the waterfall?
- 15:15No, but there is a ride right next to it that actually kinda butts up against it.
- 15:19Ha ha ha.
- 15:21Sweet, sweet, sweet. They're all butted up next to each other apparently,
- 15:24so
- 15:24Yep. Lot lots of button.
- 15:26Kyle, d did you ever try out to to be a skipper on the jungle cruise?
- 15:29What what's the story there? Does that ever
- 15:31you know, this
- 15:31You seem like
- 15:31you should have.
- 15:33is the thing is everybody was telling me I was destined to be
- 15:36a jungle cruise skipper. And
- 15:37Mm. Yeah.
- 15:38I did kind of feel that calling.
- 15:40that's one of my favorite Weird Owl songs too.
- 15:44And the skipper Dan.
- 15:45We we brought that up on the on
- 15:46Did
- 15:47you watch
- 15:47our episode.
- 15:47side note, did you watch the tiny desk concert he just did like a month or two ago?
- 15:52It's on my watch list, I've not had any time.
- 15:54He opened
- 15:55up with Jungle Cruise. How do you open up a tiny desk with Jungle Cruise?
- 15:55Mm-hmm. Or Skipper Dan.
- 15:57Really? Skipper Dan?
- 16:00Dude, he's weird ow. He could have
- 16:01I love that about him. He also did the in
- 16:04credit song from his biopic. So He can.
- 16:07He g he can do whatever he wants.
- 16:09That that man has
- 16:10carte blanche, yes. ~ what
- 16:12What a man.
- 16:13was I saying? Yes, so I was actually thinking about transferring over
- 16:18to 'cause you can only Disneyland is divided up into lands for the employees.
- 16:22So you can't have somebody who's working in Tomorrowland one day,
- 16:25then they work on another ride
- 16:27another day. So
- 16:27Right, right, right.
- 16:28we actually called it Knock in OCC,
- 16:30which is New Orleans Critter Country,
- 16:32because there's only
- 16:33Ha ha.
- 16:34one or two rides in each, they're combined.
- 16:36So if you worked
- 16:36Okay.
- 16:37in New Orleans, you also could work in Critter Country.
- 16:42So I could work Pirates, Haunted Mansion.
- 16:45I think this was the best place to work if you're an employee.
- 16:48You could work Pirates,
- 16:48Okay.
- 16:48Haunted Mansion, Splash Mountain,
- 16:50~ Winnie the
- 16:51Okay. Mm-hmm.
- 16:52Pooh, and then you could also work anything on the it w used to be
- 16:56the Mark Twain Island, now it's the Pirates Island.
- 16:58So you could do the canoes,
- 16:59Okay.
- 17:00the boats, anything like that.
- 17:01So it's also great because you pick your shifts.
- 17:06you try to see what's open on which rides you're trained on.
- 17:08You can be trained on two or three rides at the same time.
- 17:11So the more rides you have, the more options there are for you to work.
- 17:14And those are all some of the best rides at Disneyland.
- 17:17So that's that's where you want to be if if you really like old rides
- 17:21and like working on them.
- 17:24Yeah, that seems like a great great spot.
- 17:25U unless you have the opportunity to work
- 17:26at Star Wars Land, like you did.
- 17:29Let's just say that's your real priority job there.
- 17:30Like I did. That that was
- 17:34ultimately why I didn't become a jungle crew skipper,
- 17:37because I was planning on transferring over to Adventureland so that
- 17:40I could do that. And then the opportunity came along for me to do that,
- 17:44which I did not think I was gonna get,
- 17:46because I had only been with the company for about a year.
- 17:48~ but I ended up getting in, so that was kind of a once-in-a-lifetime thing.
- 17:52So I
- 17:53Yeah.
- 17:54went over and then I was on the open opening crew of Galaxy's Edge,
- 17:57which at that time
- 17:59was the newest land since ~ Toontown opened in nineteen eighty eight.
- 18:04So it had been
- 18:05Toontown.
- 18:06almost thirty years since they had a new land to open at Disneyland.
- 18:09So
- 18:09Mm-hmm.
- 18:10Wow. See, we're just used
- 18:11little slice of history.
- 18:12to an something new every two years at ~ Disney World 'cause that's where they care
- 18:17about the most. It's probably the best park,
- 18:18Quantity over quality.
- 18:19right? Quantity okay.
- 18:23And so what was your role in Galaxy's Edge?
- 18:28man. well I worked on the attractions team.
- 18:31I was kind of ~ the in stage of what they would call test and adjust,
- 18:36where you were basically calibrating the rides with the imagineers.
- 18:40So for a period of time my job was just to ride the ride and then talk
- 18:46to the Imagineers, which as cool as
- 18:48Dream job.
- 18:48it sounds, it sounds like a dream job,
- 18:50and it was. ~
- 18:52You do anything for eight hours a day,
- 18:54including riding a state of the art ride.
- 18:55It gets so old.
- 18:55Yeah. That's true.
- 18:56It does get old. Still be sticking a ditch.
- 18:58Yeah.
- 18:58That's true. Mm-hmm.
- 18:59There's ton
- 19:00of things that that are worse to be doing,
- 19:03but ~ yeah, so I was riding the ride for ~ a while and then
- 19:09I w was trained on the ride, so I was working on both the Millennium Falcon ride
- 19:13and then the Smugglers Run ride or that's the same one and then the Rise
- 19:17of the Resistance. And
- 19:18Yeah. Okay.
- 19:19Gotcha.
- 19:19~ yeah,
- 19:19I was also there for the premiere.
- 19:21I was going to ask Kyle what his role for pirates was.
- 19:26Was there only one role
- 19:28~
- 19:29you just like hit the button? Check seat belts and go?
- 19:31I wanted to be Well,
- 19:33no seatbelts on pirates. That's another reason why it's an awesome ride.
- 19:36All
- 19:37All right.
- 19:37of these post Ralph Nader rides,
- 19:40you gotta have a seatbelt. No no no.
- 19:411967.
- 19:42huh.
- 19:43We don't do seatbelts. We are grandfathered in.
- 19:46~ I wanted to be the pirate sitting on top of the treasure when you first go in,
- 19:51but you ~ I you have to be a certain weight,
- 19:55and I I wasn't skinny enough to be that guy.
- 19:57It's usually some girl in the college program.
- 19:59Who's sitting on the pile of gold when you first go in.
- 20:01But yeah, I was a ride operator.
- 20:03So basically there's a dozen or so positions that you can learn on the ride.
- 20:08So anybody who's working on the ride knows how to do pretty much everything
- 20:12on the ride. And we rotate every 30 minutes so that you're not getting bored.
- 20:16So if you have a eight-hour shift,
- 20:19you're working sixteen different positions in just a randomized order depending on
- 20:23my goodness.
- 20:24who clocked in. Yeah, and it's called rotation.
- 20:26So everybody
- 20:28You would clock in, it would tell you which position you're going to.
- 20:30So let's say I'm gonna be the one dispatching the ship.
- 20:33So I get that assignment. I'm there for about 30 minutes until somebody clocks
- 20:38in and gets a rotation, and then they'll it's called bumping.
- 20:41They'll give that rotation to the next person,
- 20:43and it's like a relay race, and it goes around.
- 20:46Yeah.
- 20:46And so I dispatched, I loaded,
- 20:48I was in the tower. I used to do this thing when,
- 20:51you know, people are misbehaving.
- 20:53~ I would be like, What? Sit down!
- 20:56What?
- 20:57You know, something Google like that,
- 20:58No
- 20:59goofy, and then ~ if they still wouldn't it'd be like,
- 21:01Hey, seriously, sit down. So
- 21:04Mm.
- 21:04Yeah.
- 21:07You here's the thing, people
- 21:08That's cool.
- 21:08do not realize, at least it's not top of mind,
- 21:12we can see everything you are doing in a Disney ride.
- 21:16No matter what the ride is, we can see you at all times.
- 21:19You are never have a moment to yourself.
- 21:22Infrared cameras.
- 21:22Some people either just
- 21:22It's dark in there.
- 21:24it's it's dark in there, but we see you.
- 21:26We have cameras
- 21:27Mm.
- 21:27that account for that. ~
- 21:29What if I wear a camo?
- 21:31you know, nobody's ever tried that yet.
- 21:33Just something to keep in mind,
- 21:34this is a PSA, especially for ~ any any young couples out there going on
- 21:40d to Disney for date night. We can see you!
- 21:45Yikes.
- 21:47The can you tell I've I've been through some stuff?
- 21:50Can you tell I've I've seen I've seen things?
- 21:54If I have to watch it,
- 21:54Yikes.
- 21:55I'm calling the cops.
- 21:57~ my goodness.
- 21:58Moving on. Okay. Wow. Well,
- 22:02Jonathan, talk about the premiere,
- 22:06'cause wasn't your wife actually at the premiere of this movie?
- 22:10Yeah. ~
- 22:12That's cool.
- 22:13So yeah, Kelsey told me a story that her family went to Disneyland,
- 22:18~ and it just like just randomly coincided with the premiere of Pirates
- 22:24of the Caribbean. So they had the for this movie they did like
- 22:28the premiere actually at the park.
- 22:30It was kind of a a cool experience.
- 22:32They brought the stars to Disneyland.
- 22:33They had it out like on a screen outdoors.
- 22:36It was kind of like an outdoor showing.
- 22:37And
- 22:39So she was just there on the day that it was happening.
- 22:41She didn't like go for the premiere.
- 22:44None of them even knew like is this gonna be a good movie or not,
- 22:47you know? But they
- 22:48Yeah.
- 22:49had seen some trailers and I was like,
- 22:50this one looks, you know, pretty decent.
- 22:52~ and she has a pen. She couldn't find it for the episode,
- 22:56but I did find a picture of it online.
- 23:00~ I found this on eBay.
- 23:04She got this like
- 23:05wow.
- 23:05world premiere pin for like going to the park that day.
- 23:09Wow, she can make fifteen dollars on that.
- 23:11Yeah, no, this one sold for like on eBay.
- 23:12She should hold on to that, yeah.
- 23:14Yeah.
- 23:15That's pretty cool.
- 23:16So
- 23:16That might be seventeen ninety nine in a couple of years.
- 23:19Yeah.
- 23:20Do you think she's the one selling it because she couldn't find it?
- 23:24Well if she did, that means we're fifteen dollars richer.
- 23:27Yeah.
- 23:28What's mine is yours, Kelsey. ~
- 23:29Fifteen dollars closer to your first trip to Disneyland.
- 23:31He
- 23:35but yeah.
- 23:39That's really cool.
- 23:40The only other thing I wrote down for Disney Ride History is that in
- 23:43the movie you can find a hidden Mickey at around thirty five minutes into it,
- 23:48and the final cannon shot during the Black Pearl siege of the town billows into like
- 23:54a Mickey Mouse head shape against the sky.
- 23:56~ very cool.
- 23:57Okay, well I guess we'll do some quick facts and stats for the movie.
- 24:02Just to get everybody ~ Y absolutely,
- 24:02Well I
- 24:02Do you want to know a couple tidbits about the ride before we move on?
- 24:06Okay.
- 24:07before we move on, yes.
- 24:08The smell that salt water smell when you walk in.
- 24:10Yes, people love that. Okay.
- 24:11People love that,
- 24:13and a lot of people think it's a smell machine,
- 24:15because we have those especially on Main Street and in other parts of the park.
- 24:18It's just the water, isn't it?
- 24:21It's it's not chlorine, but it's called bromine.
- 24:23Which is similar to chlorine,
- 24:24Okay.
- 24:25but it doesn't irritate people's eyes,
- 24:27and you don't have as much trouble with
- 24:27But it like joined a floor
- 24:29reactions. But what's that?
- 24:31Bromine is basically chlorine,
- 24:33but it joined a frat.
- 24:35That's a good one. That's funny.
- 24:37Thank you, thank you, thank you.
- 24:37Yeah.
- 24:38I'm trying
- 24:38not to be a jungle cruise skipper,
- 24:40so
- 24:41You could do it. yeah, so that's what's in the water.
- 24:45And it is, like I said,
- 24:48it's the shortest line because it's the fastest loading ride.
- 24:52We can dispatch I say we can, like I'm still working there.
- 24:55They can dispatch at at top capacity 3,000 guests in an hour.
- 25:02It's usually not that much just because the way that the boats are arranged.
- 25:03my goodness. How many people
- 25:07how many people fit in a boat?
- 25:08You say sixteen?
- 25:10Man, no, it's more than that. Let's see.
- 25:12So there's six rows. Let's see how much I can remember.
- 25:15Three people in the front row.
- 25:18You can fit f five people in
- 25:19Ayy
- 25:21the middle ones. Okay, let's see.
- 25:22Yep, three in the front. The different rows you can fit.
- 25:26~ the next four rows you can fit up to four.
- 25:29And then two in the back. No more than two in the back,
- 25:32ever. yeah. So this
- 25:32Okay. Dude. Got your own road there,
- 25:35I got I got a little I know. I got a little slideshow here.
- 25:36Jonathan.
- 25:38is a great picture.
- 25:39So this is this is our recent trip to ride Pirates of the Caribbean,
- 25:43Disney this summer. Kelsey also sent me some other pictures here
- 25:48of ~ this is some pictures she's taken at other versions of the ride that she's been
- 25:54to. So this is this is Disneyland,
- 25:55Hmm.
- 25:56correct? ~ Kyle? In New Orleans Square.
- 25:56Yep, yep, that's it. That's my ride.
- 25:59Okay, so that's what the facade looks like.
- 26:04Guess this is where you load in.
- 26:06Mm-hmm.
- 26:06And then yeah, this is just in the square,
- 26:10New Orleans Square is your in the right area.
- 26:13~ this I believe is Disneyland Paris she went to.
- 26:17And this has a really cool like skull and chip and everything.
- 26:18~ wow. Yeah.
- 26:22That's fine.
- 26:23these are some some pictures she took.
- 26:26And then that's the pen. And then this is our video,
- 26:28we have a video.
- 26:29which isn't very good. Can you hear that?
- 26:31Are we gonna watch
- 26:32you guys go through the
- 26:32Yeah.
- 26:33s sixteen minute ride?
- 26:35No, it's like it's pretty quick.
- 26:37We can talk over it while it's playing.
- 26:40It's some footage that I got that was like dark,
- 26:41Okay, good, you turn the volume down.
- 26:42Did you guys know that they can see you in the ride?
- 26:44so yeah, but we could see them.
- 26:44~ that's some good footage. Nice.
- 26:45Yep.
- 26:46I was filming. Got
- 26:48back. But yeah. You can kind of see like
- 26:51I don't know if
- 26:54No, go ahead.
- 26:55They did ~ I think that was w before the second one came out,
- 26:582006 was when they added the Johnny Depp.
- 27:01Okay.
- 27:02Mm-hmm.
- 27:02Mm-hmm.
- 27:04I think Barbosa's
- 27:04I think
- 27:05in there too, at the start on the ship.
- 27:08They did, yeah. They added him eventually
- 27:08~
- 27:10too.
- 27:10Okay, I did I did have a couple more like ride facts that I I saw
- 27:15in the episode that I was gonna point out.
- 27:16Going back to the Florida ride,
- 27:18~ they kind of didn't really wanna put it in Florida to begin with,
- 27:24because they thought it was kind of redundant because Florida is kind
- 27:27of in the Caribbean. So they're like,
- 27:29People why would they wanna go ride that ride?
- 27:32So they they tailored it as like a Western River expedition and then they're like,
- 27:37No, we just want pirates. So they like caved and they
- 27:40Yeah.
- 27:41Yeah,
- 27:41they just made a pirate's ride in Disney,
- 27:43but I thought that was kinda funny.
- 27:44That they just thought it would be redundant.
- 27:44This is the first time that I've ever heard
- 27:47someone consider Orlando, Florida as part of the Caribbean.
- 27:51Can you imagine your dad comes home and tells you you guys are going on a family
- 27:52It's close, you know. ~
- 27:53Closer than Disneyland.
- 27:55vacation to the Caribbean? You end up in Orlando.
- 27:58We've got the Caribbean at home.
- 27:59Yeah we have the Caribbean at home.
- 28:00Well, now that you can take a Disney
- 28:02cruise, you can go to the Caribbean while being on Disney property.
- 28:05So
- 28:06yes, yes. This
- 28:06There you go. Mm-hmm.
- 28:07this bandana also is a
- 28:08They've thought of everything.
- 28:10~ bandana Kelsey got on a Disney cruise that was a pirate night themed that they
- 28:14gave out. It's kinda hard to see,
- 28:16okay.
- 28:16but there's
- 28:16like a a a skull and crossbones missy Mickey in the back,
- 28:20so
- 28:21I thought that was the Mighty Ducks.
- 28:23That's Skull and Crossbones. Gotcha.
- 28:25That that would be that'd be good too.
- 28:26Mm.
- 28:28The ~ the last thing that I saw basically the it folk the episode focused
- 28:35on the Shanghai version 'cause that's the newest version of the attraction to open.
- 28:38And in this case, yes,
- 28:40That one's on another level. Yeah.
- 28:42it's it's completely
- 28:44well one, it's completely based around the movies,
- 28:46'cause they're like most people
- 28:47Mm-hmm.
- 28:47just know the movies. Okay. So ~ it's just a cool episode to watch out
- 28:52~ to watch and to check out like what how that ride is different from the others,
- 28:56but ~
- 28:57Yeah, I think this is one of the few rides that we've of these movies that we've
- 29:01covered where the movie was good enough that it then re influenced the ride.
- 29:06And like characters made it back into the ride and storylines and that sort
- 29:10of thing. 'Cause like the country bears,
- 29:12as much as we loved it, they're not singing those songs and country bear jamboree
- 29:16anymore. So
- 29:17I hate
- 29:17They
- 29:17should have
- 29:17to tell ya,
- 29:18they're not singing any songs in the country bear jamboree.
- 29:20Yeah.
- 29:23Is it a recording? Is that what you're saying?
- 29:25Are you ruining the magic?
- 29:27I'm saying I think
- 29:28We know they're not really
- 29:29singing it the recording, but like they're in the suits.
- 29:31Acting it out. The
- 29:32It's real bears in the suits. In the bear
- 29:35suits.
- 29:36You y'all might be very disappointed if you end up going to Disneyland
- 29:40and expecting to see the country bear jamboree.
- 29:42they don't have anything there,
- 29:43yeah. Yeah.
- 29:44No.
- 29:45Are you saying that they're still they they still have it somewhere?
- 29:48It's still in in Florida, yeah.
- 29:49We went this summer. And they've they've changed it they've changed it
- 29:50Is it really? Wow. Wow.
- 29:51Yeah, quantity over quality, huh?
- 29:54now to they're singing Disney cover songs instead of the original classic songs that
- 29:59Dumb. Dumb man.
- 30:00they did. But yeah. It's still there.
- 30:04I wish they would have done the soundtrack from the Country Bears,
- 30:07but can't win all.
- 30:08Is Christopher Walken
- 30:10just like on stage with the Country Bears and he's like,
- 30:13It's me from the movie. This is what I do now.
- 30:15Yeah, h he's the armpit farter on stage.
- 30:20And and you're like, No, Christopher
- 30:20I wish. I really wish.
- 30:22Walken, you were in the deer hunter.
- 30:23Christopher Walken animatronic.
- 30:24You don't have to do this.
- 30:26Mm.
- 30:29It's actually the Christopher Walken you see in movies is an animatronic.
- 30:33The real one is at Disneyland or Disney World in the Country Bear Jamboree.
- 30:38That's what he wants to do. Mm-hmm.
- 30:38He's actually a Jim Henson Muppet creature shop work.
- 30:41He's a he Practical
- 30:43Effect by ILM, Christopher Walken is.
- 30:45Yeah. So
- 30:46Yeah.
- 30:47is his voice. Okay, well we probably gotta get the ball rolling
- 30:51now that we're almost f forty minutes into it.
- 30:54So yeah.
- 30:54are we actually gonna talk about the movie?
- 30:56I didn't
- 30:57Mm-hmm.
- 30:58realize that we're gonna do that.
- 31:00Okay, well this movie came out in two thousand and three,
- 31:04which was twenty-three whole years ago.
- 31:06It was directed by Gore Verbinski,
- 31:09known for Mouse Hunt and s a couple
- 31:11Mm-hmm.
- 31:11other movies. like The Ring,
- 31:14Rango, The Lone Ranger, and recently,
- 31:17Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die movie with Sam forgot his last name.
- 31:22Rockwell. Same Rockwell. Yeah,
- 31:23What's his Rockwell, yeah. Did you see that?
- 31:25yeah.
- 31:25I did not see that.
- 31:27I did not see that. I think that was his attempt to get out of director jail,
- 31:31which he's been in for the past whatever fifteen years since Lone Ranger came out.
- 31:35I have
- 31:36Yeah.
- 31:37no idea if that how how it did,
- 31:39so he might be out now or he might have gone right back in.
- 31:43Probably. We'll see. this movie is rated PG thirteen,
- 31:47which is interesting because this is the first of Disney pictures to do so.
- 31:52Touchstone was usually the one ~ that
- 31:55Mm-hmm.
- 31:55they would send all the you know,
- 31:57the PG thirteen and up movies to do.
- 31:59Just like Mission to Mars.
- 32:00Now, as this is a podcast
- 32:02that covers ~ movies for five year olds,
- 32:05I wanted to know, have you guys done a PG thirteen movie before?
- 32:09Is this also your first PG thirteen?
- 32:11No. We
- 32:12did Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire,
- 32:14thank you very much.
- 32:15excuse me.
- 32:15and we covered my
- 32:17very first PG thirteen movie I ever saw,
- 32:19The Mask of Zorro, ~ back in the day.
- 32:20Mask of Zorro, yeah. Duh.
- 32:21Okay. Interesting.
- 32:23Do you know
- 32:23who wrote The Mask of Zoro?
- 32:25The same writers as this movie.
- 32:27Yeah. Yep.
- 32:28Bingo. Yeah. Mm-hmm.
- 32:29That makes so much sense.
- 32:31Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio. I don't know how to say it,
- 32:34Yeah, Rossio. Mm-hmm.
- 32:34Okay.
- 32:35but
- 32:36~ well this movie has a Rotten Tomatoes critic score,
- 32:40certified fresh at seventy-nine percent,
- 32:43and an audience score of eighty-six.
- 32:45Which is pretty good. I would say it's pretty good for
- 32:46Okay. Yeah? Yeah.
- 32:49this movie. ~ the tagline on the poster says,
- 32:53Prepare to be blown out of the water.
- 32:55And boy were we.
- 32:58~ it is a whopping two hours and twenty-three minutes long,
- 33:03but I'm excited the whole time.
- 33:06And it is on Disney Plus as of this recording.
- 33:09So
- 33:11It is on Disney Plus. Can I get on a soapbox?
- 33:14I don't have a literal soapbox,
- 33:15but I I will say,
- 33:15Please soap it up.
- 33:18this is this is for the real real nerds.
- 33:21~ I watched this movie last night,
- 33:24I put it on, and the Disney Plus version th is the 4K digital conversion
- 33:30of their digital remaster and it looks so so bad.
- 33:35I watched it with my wife who had never seen it before,
- 33:37and the first thing she said is this looks very CGI,
- 33:40which is really sad because it opens with this gorgeous shot of this beautiful ship
- 33:44coming out of the fog. And it looks
- 33:46Yeah.
- 33:46really, really waxy and muted.
- 33:48And I'm not saying you have to go out and buy the DVD,
- 33:52but if you're gonna like watch this movie or have people over to watch it,
- 33:56and you know a friend who has the Blu-ray,
- 33:57~ try to get a physical copy.
- 33:59Do not watch the Blu ray. Do not watch the Blu ray.
- 34:00Do not watch the Blu-ray. Watch the Blu-ray.
- 34:02They messed up on this
- 34:04Blu ray. Okay? There's like
- 34:05What's wrong with the Blu-ray?
- 34:06five s five minutes. It's not a big deal.
- 34:09I guess it's mostly worth watching.
- 34:10But during the fighting scene where they're in the blacksmith
- 34:15I almost said blacksmith's office.
- 34:16the dude
- 34:19You know.
- 34:19that was physically like framing the shots,
- 34:22like lowered the framing to where ~ a lot of heads are almost cut off.
- 34:25Hmm. It messed up the letterboxing.
- 34:28Interesting. Interesting. I would still probably
- 34:28But it's only for those five minutes.
- 34:30So that's fine. But anyways
- 34:33take that over the conversion rate that they used for this There we go.
- 34:37That's a good one. ~ I would advocate
- 34:38Disney Plus. It's not good enough.
- 34:41for the Blu ray. Overwatching it on but that's just that's just the door key.
- 34:44If anything, it's kinda cool to see that little
- 34:46mistake, it's a little blemish.
- 34:48Mm-hmm.
- 34:48Yeah. Makes it interesting.
- 34:49So Yeah.
- 34:51big proponent of physical media.
- 34:53It's like having the gold behind your currency.
- 34:54I think more people should be buying DVDs.
- 34:57I'll get off my soapbox now.
- 34:58Or digital downloads, it's like your crypto.
- 35:01Yeah, absolutely. Own your media.
- 35:05Yeah.
- 35:05Hm.
- 35:06Well, Jonathan, do you have a storyline for
- 35:06Yeah. Can't get this on Disney
- 35:08Plus. Otherwise I wouldn't have bought it.
- 35:13Same
- 35:13situation with mission to Mars,
- 35:15huh?
- 35:15Yeah.
- 35:16~ well if you haven't seen this movie,
- 35:18Jonathan has a storyline for you.
- 35:21Okay, okay. For those who haven't seen this yet,
- 35:24an intrepid blacksmith teams up with an eccentric pirate captain to save
- 35:28his love from an undead pirate crew.
- 35:30Hilarity ensues.
- 35:33Hilarity
- 35:34ensues. We say that at the end of every storyline.
- 35:38To get people to watch it. Yeah.
- 35:38I figured mm-hmm.
- 35:39Mm-hmm.
- 35:40~
- 35:41so yeah.
- 35:42They wouldn't watch
- 35:42it if we didn't tell them that there was some jokes,
- 35:44you know.
- 35:44Yeah.
- 35:45That's true.
- 35:45In this case hilarity actually does ensue.
- 35:48So
- 35:48Mm-hmm.
- 35:48yeah.
- 35:51Mm.
- 35:52I've got a what the wife said.
- 35:53Alright.
- 35:54We
- 35:54each have a wife, so we can do that.
- 35:56We do and they all watch this movie.
- 35:58This is a perfect thing.
- 36:00Shall I start? Okay.
- 36:01You start. Since
- 36:02your wife actually went to the premiere,
- 36:04she's better than all of us.
- 36:06Well, I'll try and remember some of the other comments she made about
- 36:09the actual movie, but I got my like my laptop out to like take some notes
- 36:15and stuff while we were watching and she basically like typed in what
- 36:18the wife said for herself so I didn't have to type it for her.
- 36:21Ha ha ha.
- 36:21So this is what she wrote.
- 36:22She said, I have the best husband in the whole world.
- 36:24He is the Will Turner to my Elizabeth Swan.
- 36:27I love him more though, like more than anything in this world,
- 36:30and more today than yesterday.
- 36:31So
- 36:32That's our producer.
- 36:34That that doesn't have anything to do with the movie.
- 36:38Hilarity ensues.
- 36:38Yeah.
- 36:39What about you?
- 36:41Well, this was the first time my wife had ever seen it.
- 36:44She said she she grew up in a house that didn't really you'd think that
- 36:49her brothers would love it, but I guess they didn't.
- 36:51They didn't really watch these growing up.
- 36:53And she said that she watched it once but she fell asleep.
- 36:57but this time she actually tried to watch it and she loved it.
- 37:02She was cracking up the whole time.
- 37:04man. She actually thought this was a great movie.
- 37:08And I had to pitch it to her, I was like,
- 37:10It's like a guy period piece.
- 37:13It's like Pride and Prejudice with the same girl but a better love triangle.
- 37:22And and ~ skeletons ~ and treasure.
- 37:25~ And swashbuckling adventures.
- 37:29So I I convin I convinced her.
- 37:31So But she she loved it.
- 37:32It's the original Pride, Prejudice,
- 37:32Glad you liked it.
- 37:34and Zombies. It's kind of a backdoor zombie movie if you really think about it.
- 37:37Pretty kind of, yeah.
- 37:38Yeah.
- 37:38Yeah. Mm-hmm.
- 37:39Mm-hmm.
- 37:40Yeah, cool. What about you, Kyle?
- 37:44Well, my wife only watched the first hour and change.
- 37:46She was very tired. I can like go get her
- 37:48Yeah.
- 37:49and ask her what she thought, or we can just say that she probably thought
- 37:52You can just guess. Yeah.
- 37:52it was fine. My wife has seen
- 37:53She probably thought it was a masterpiece.
- 37:55~ this was probably the seventeenth movie she's seen in her life.
- 37:59She not from a big movie watching family.
- 38:01Period Wow, okay.
- 38:02No, probably
- 38:02Yeah. Okay, okay.
- 38:04she's probably seen more than that,
- 38:06but ~ I just real quick, I think it's really funny that all of our wives work
- 38:12Pretty impressive jobs in terms of like what they do,
- 38:16~ to help people. I don't ~
- 38:18Yeah.
- 38:19my wife is a therapist, Jeremy's wife is a school teacher,
- 38:22your wife's going to school for to be what,
- 38:24a P T? No T?
- 38:26Jonathan's
- 38:26wife is gonna be a school is a school teacher.
- 38:27My wife's the school teacher.
- 38:29Abby is the OT student. She's gonna be an O T.
- 38:32Did I say it wrong? Did I say your wife is Jeremy's.
- 38:32Yeah, you said Jeremy's wife is gonna be a teacher.
- 38:35~
- 38:36Jonathan's wife is a his teacher.
- 38:38Jeremy's wife.
- 38:39Mm.
- 38:40Anyway, my point is these women
- 38:41She might get into teaching.
- 38:43work incredibly grueling jobs and they come home and we're like,
- 38:46Can you watch a movie so we can record a podcast together?
- 38:48Yeah.
- 38:50It's for it's for our movie podcast.
- 38:53Trust me, you're gonna love it.
- 38:55So basically we're a guys and we're
- 38:55Every now and then, yeah.
- 38:57friends and we talk about movies.
- 39:00I do know who you guys are married to.
- 39:01I d I'm getting that mixed up.
- 39:03That was just a vocal flub. Yeah.
- 39:03Thank you. Yeah.
- 39:04Good, good.
- 39:05Mhm.
- 39:06Okay. Well, ~
- 39:07Well Jeremy, should we go
- 39:08ahead and kick off the IQ test?
- 39:10We should, now that we are almost fifty minutes into this.
- 39:13Okay, we're gonna try and go through this quicker even though there's a lot.
- 39:16Okay.
- 39:17Okay. Alright. Walk me through it.
- 39:20We have a test for our movies that meet our IQ standards.
- 39:22We have a series of binary and quantitative tests to help best categorize these
- 39:28movies as staples, stapleist, or just plain quacks.
- 39:31Movies must collect at least seven points or higher to be a staple and
- 39:35All ten points to become a stapleist.
- 39:38And then ~ if it makes six or less,
- 39:40the movie's a quack. We also have a bonus round of five subjective tests that
- 39:45we came up with if we weren't happy with the objective test.
- 39:48That way we know how it scores objectively and then how we really want to score it.
- 39:53So we'll start off with test number one,
- 39:56the quotable quotes test.
- 39:58how quotable is this movie to you guys?
- 40:00Parlay.
- 40:00How many quotes have you loaded up on the soundboard?
- 40:02If it's more than ten, it gets a point.
- 40:03A lot. Don't worry about it. One,
- 40:05two, three, four, five, six,
- 40:06seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven,
- 40:08twelve, thirteen, fourteen. And
- 40:10Okay.
- 40:11that's just the ones I could find without music.
- 40:13Yeah.
- 40:15It it just depends on what you mean by quotable.
- 40:17If you're talking about like quotes that you could actually use in like
- 40:21a modern day conversation and not seem and have it seem natural,
- 40:25I don't know if there's that many,
- 40:26but if you're talking about quotes where like you can say something like parlay
- 40:30or why is the
- 40:31Mm-hmm.
- 40:31rum gone and people know what movie you're talking about,
- 40:33Mm-hmm. Yeah.
- 40:33then it is pretty quotable. I don't know if there's like
- 40:35one I think why is the rum gone is probably the one that kind of in the zeitgeist,
- 40:39That's a big one.
- 40:40Yeah, that's probably the main one.
- 40:41yeah. Yeah.
- 40:42~
- 40:43I don't know if I can
- 40:45I don't know if I can really think of any other ones that immediately come
- 40:49to the top of my mind if I had not just watched it.
- 40:52I think one of my favorite ones was Consider them mocked.
- 40:56It's like
- 40:58Okay.
- 41:00Norrington's first words. Just
- 41:02Yeah.
- 41:02Mm-hmm.
- 41:03the way he said it was so sassy.
- 41:05It was funny.
- 41:06There's
- 41:06little snippets of dialogue that are rememberable if not quoting,
- 41:09like, ~ W
- 41:10Yeah.
- 41:10What do you say to three shillings and we forget the name?
- 41:13I remember that one. Mhm. Schmidty yeah.
- 41:13Right, right. Smith Smithy. Just just listen to
- 41:16Welcome to Port Royal.
- 41:17this. Listen to how this guy says that.
- 41:19Consider the marked.
- 41:22I love him.
- 41:22And then after that is I half
- 41:24expected it to be made of wood when he pulls the sword out.
- 41:26Like it's it's quippy, it's fun.
- 41:26Yes. Yeah.
- 41:27Mm-hmm.
- 41:28I don't remember Yeah.
- 41:31Well, Jonathan, what do you have?
- 41:35Taught Tuga.
- 41:36Soltsuga. We that is an inside quote for us for sure.
- 41:38I don't know. I just feel like me and Jeremy say that to each other.
- 41:43So our inside quote is like
- 41:46if we're figuring out where we're gonna go or like somewhere
- 41:49Mm-hmm.
- 41:50for lunch or if like we we have our heading to go somewhere,
- 41:54we're like where are we going?
- 41:56And we're like
- 41:57Tortuga.
- 41:58Soltuga.
- 42:01Now is Tortuga
- 42:01That's all.
- 42:02can Tortuga be any place or is Tortuga like
- 42:05Anything.
- 42:05a Waffle House?
- 42:07It can be any place. Yeah.
- 42:09It should just
- 42:09Yeah.
- 42:09you guys gotta pick a place for Tortuga to be.
- 42:09It just means that we're on the same page.
- 42:12Yeah.
- 42:13We've actually never been to really Tortuga,
- 42:15so or the dry Tortugas.
- 42:17Tortuga
- 42:17should just be Disneyland. Yeah.
- 42:20Well, if Orlando
- 42:20Yeah, it's about the same.
- 42:21is in the Caribbean, then Tortuga can be Miami.
- 42:23Mm.
- 42:25It's close enough.
- 42:27Yeah. ~ okay.
- 42:28~ let's see.
- 42:32That's got to be the worst pirate I've ever heard of.
- 42:34But you have heard of me.
- 42:35But you have heard of me. Yep,
- 42:37yep, okay, yeah.
- 42:42Got we haven't a cold.
- 42:46I'm just gonna go through them since I have them.
- 42:49Mm-hmm. Yeah.
- 42:49I
- 42:50already played the that's not good enough.
- 42:52Then we've got considerate marked.
- 42:55This one's a good one. This one's very useful that we haven't ever used.
- 43:05Okay.
- 43:06Like
- 43:06whenever you're putting a corset on,
- 43:07you just be like, It's difficult to say
- 43:08Yeah. I
- 43:10wish I could have remembered that quote last time I put one of those on.
- 43:13Yeah. Hmm. Do you like pain?
- 43:15Was that this morning?
- 43:15Me too.
- 43:17Try wearing a corset.
- 43:19Of course I no.
- 43:21Yes, yes, yes.
- 43:22Hello, Paul Put.
- 43:23Hello we know you're in there,
- 43:26puppet.
- 43:27Mm.
- 43:27That's a good one.
- 43:27Why
- 43:29Yeah, I'm disinclined to acquiesce to your request as such a great word because
- 43:34you think pirates are dumb and they don't have a good vocabulary.
- 43:37But everybody had a good vocabulary back then.
- 43:40Especially in that scene
- 43:41Mm-hmm.
- 43:41too, 'cause he's like, You used a lot of big words there,
- 43:44Missy, you know. We're just simple pirate folks and then then
- 43:45Mm-hmm. Yeah.
- 43:46Ye right.
- 43:48she's like, I want you to leave and never come back and then he responds
- 43:50Yeah.
- 43:51that way. So that was a good piece of dialogue.
- 43:52Yeah. It's kind of
- 43:54flips it on her.
- 43:55Good stuff, good stuff. ~ you're not a eunuch,
- 43:58are you? That is a very improvisational line.
- 44:02Every i
- 44:02Also just a little glance down with his eyes.
- 44:06You're not a eunuch, are you? He ca he may he improved probably half of these lines,
- 44:11but that was one of them.
- 44:12Mm, that's good.
- 44:12His facial
- 44:13expressions in his acting was really good in this.
- 44:17Yeah, so good.
- 44:18He got nominated for an Oscar which nobody
- 44:20Yeah.
- 44:21saw coming. ~ sorry,
- 44:22Wait, that's its own test. Wait,
- 44:23we'll talk about acting later.
- 44:24Okay, yeah, yeah. Okay.
- 44:24sorry. All right.
- 44:25We'll talk about acting
- 44:26later. Are we passing
- 44:26What other quotes?
- 44:27this? let's just say this is a matter of leverage.
- 44:30Mm.
- 44:32There's no real ship as can match the Interceptor.
- 44:35I don't know, those those two guys I I thought were pretty funny.
- 44:39They were great. They were my favorite.
- 44:40~ you best start believing in ghost stories,
- 44:44Miss Turner. You're in one.
- 44:47You need to find yourself a girl,
- 44:49mate.
- 44:51Darn to the depths of the muttonheads whoever invented parlay.
- 44:55Well that would be the French.
- 44:57Be French, yep. That's a good one.
- 45:00You think he wasn't telling the truth?
- 45:03Too long.
- 45:06Hehehehe
- 45:08There'll be no living with her now.
- 45:11I wouldn't have watched the movie last night if I'd known you guys were just gonna
- 45:14Yeah, we c we could just
- 45:14do it for me.
- 45:15we could just do the whole thing.
- 45:17This'll be to the day they
- 45:18Mm-hmm.
- 45:19all remember as the day they almost caught Captain Jack Sparrow.
- 45:25Iconic. We got a lot of lines that aren't actually funny.
- 45:28We usually just do the funny ones,
- 45:29but
- 45:30I I really liked if you were waiting for the opportune moment,
- 45:34that was it. I feel like that's a good one you could use.
- 45:38Yes, yes,
- 45:39yes, yes. Bring me that horizon.
- 45:42The code is more like guidelines anyway.
- 45:46~ A lot of their best quotes
- 45:48Mm-hmm.
- 45:48had ~ like the triple payoff. I don't know what that's actually called.
- 45:52The rule of three, I guess. They use they use those pretty well,
- 45:54Yeah, rule of three. Yeah, pretty much.
- 45:55Yeah. Yeah.
- 45:55Mm-hmm.
- 45:57I guess. ~
- 46:00I love weddings. Drinks all around.
- 46:02That's all I got. That's enough to pass.
- 46:05We'll move
- 46:05Yeah, it's yeah.
- 46:06it on.
- 46:07That was for the smell. That's a good that's a good little tag at the end.
- 46:11That's
- 46:11for the smell, yeah.
- 46:12Yeah, yeah.
- 46:15We passed it. Alright, now on
- 46:16Mm-hmm.
- 46:17to the magnificent music test.
- 46:21Alright. So the magnificent music test.
- 46:24Can you name or identify by sound the theme by heart?
- 46:27In other words, can you guess the movie based on the score?
- 46:30The score for this movie was composed by someone named Klaus Bedelt.
- 46:35Or was
- 46:36Baday.
- 46:36it? There's a big question mark here.
- 46:39Yeah, or was it?
- 46:40Because everyone thinks.
- 46:43pairs Han Zimmer with Pirates of the Caribbean movies.
- 46:46And to be fair, he did
- 46:47Mm-hmm.
- 46:49two and three, I think maybe four as well.
- 46:51But technically he is not listed as the composer for the first movie.
- 46:56So I looked into it, and apparently,
- 46:58here's the story. Jerry
- 46:58Mm-hmm. Yeah, what'd you find?
- 47:01Bruckheimer originally was gonna have Alan Silvestri do the score.
- 47:05And he was even listed on early teaser posters as
- 47:06Mm-hmm.
- 47:09like he was gonna do it. And then
- 47:12Him and Jerry Bruckheimer had like creative differences and he fired him.
- 47:16So Hans Zimmer wa was someone that had collaborated with ~ Gore Verbinski,
- 47:22and so they wanted to bring him on the project.
- 47:25But he was working on another movie at the time,
- 47:28The Last Samurai. So he was contractually not allowed to like work
- 47:34on any other movies. So he said,
- 47:37Okay, well
- 47:37Mm-hmm.
- 47:38I suggest you hire this guy, Klaus.
- 47:41And this guy ended up being like a student of his and like worked for
- 47:45his like music production company.
- 47:47So he basically
- 47:47Hmm.
- 47:49was like, Here, I s I'm gonna refer you to this guy.
- 47:52He works for my company, Media Ventures.
- 47:53And the story goes that like Hans Zimmer just like stayed up all night
- 47:58one night and like made a demo of all the main themes and
- 48:01Huh.
- 48:01basically just handed it to the composer Klaus.
- 48:04And then Klaus took those themes and like incorporated it and came up with
- 48:08the rest of the score into the movie.
- 48:09He pulled
- 48:10a John Williams for Harry Potter.
- 48:12But he just like did it all in one night.
- 48:15But I will say
- 48:17Wow.
- 48:18there is some connections to previous scores that he's done.
- 48:21~ a lot of people say his gladiator score is very similar to his pirate score.
- 48:26Yes, you can really hear that,
- 48:26Dude, yes, that's true.
- 48:28specifically
- 48:28yeah.
- 48:30the track The Battle, if you listen to that,
- 48:33there's a segment of that that is very sounds very similar to Pirates.
- 48:36Also, ~
- 48:40This is not his first pirate movie because he did the score
- 48:42for Muppet Treasure Island. So
- 48:45He did? Mm-hmm.
- 48:46Did he really?
- 48:48He he knows his way around the high seas.
- 48:52His favorite flavor is ~ tropical
- 48:53That's why that movie was so good.
- 48:53~
- 48:55punch. ~ the high seas,
- 48:57I believe it.
- 48:58gotcha.
- 48:59Yeah. ~ yeah. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
- 49:00~
- 49:01So
- 49:01what's interesting is you can go on YouTube and you can actually find
- 49:05the demo that Hans Zimmer did.
- 49:07And
- 49:08Mm.
- 49:08~ Han Zimmer was one of the first composers to really ~
- 49:14get into the whole like realm of demos as far as production goes,
- 49:18because he was one of the first composers to really innovate the keyboard
- 49:23or the synthesizer
- 49:23Mm-hmm.
- 49:24where you could have multiple instruments with the synthesizer.
- 49:29And so he would record his demos where he's playing all of the instrument parts,
- 49:33but it's whatever can be played on the synthesizer.
- 49:36So then he turns it over to Klaus or whoever,
- 49:39and all
- 49:40Mm-hmm.
- 49:40of the bones are there, but it's very limited because it's whatever instruments
- 49:45you can get out of a synthesizer,
- 49:47and then Klaus just kind of takes the ball and runs with it.
- 49:50And if
- 49:50Mm-hmm.
- 49:51you listen to the versions that make it in the film.
- 49:55They are substantially improved upon from the demo to the point where I'm
- 49:59Mm.
- 50:00completely fine with calling Clas what what's his last name?
- 50:03Class B yes, Beday.
- 50:03Bedelt Bedelt
- 50:06B A D E L T
- 50:08Klaus Bidet is very much the composer of this,
- 50:11because even though if you go back and listen to it,
- 50:13Mm. Okay. Mm hmm. Yeah.
- 50:13you'll definitely hear all the bones and all kind of the
- 50:16Mm-hmm.
- 50:17the foundation of the demo, but
- 50:19He was the one that really brought it to the next level.
- 50:22And also I think the Jack Sparrow theme,
- 50:25this is what's iconic about the music is you have two
- 50:28Mm.
- 50:28s separate themes that are pretty recognizable.
- 50:31You have the main pirates theme,
- 50:32but then you also have Jack Sparrow's theme,
- 50:34which is the violin one, and that's the one
- 50:35Mm-hmm.
- 50:37that immediately starts playing in my mind when I think Pirates of the Caribbean.
- 50:41And I think that was that was his that he came up with,
- 50:43~ cool. Mm-hmm. Yeah.
- 50:44so ~ yeah.
- 50:45Okay.
- 50:47Yeah, I he was
- 50:47Is it also
- 50:48a longtime contributor to like a collaborator with Han Zimmer.
- 50:52I even going back to like Prince of Egypt,
- 50:54like all these
- 50:55Mm-hmm.
- 50:55movies, he was kind of an additional composer and
- 50:56Ooh, good music.
- 50:58so he I mean, he knows his way.
- 50:58Well, they're both German. They're probably just hanging out in Germany just playing
- 50:59Yeah. Yeah. But he got sole
- 51:03on synth synthesizers.
- 51:04credit for this one. So I'll I'll have to look at at that demo.
- 51:07I've never actually listened to that.
- 51:08That'll be pretty cool to check out.
- 51:09Mm-hmm. It's interesting,
- 51:10yeah. It's kind of a interesting source text.
- 51:15Is it true that I didn't really know this.
- 51:17I might be I might be wrong, but the Yoho,
- 51:21Yoho a Pirates Life for Me song,
- 51:23was that written for the actual ride?
- 51:25Or was that always just been a song?
- 51:28No, it was written for the ride.
- 51:29I had no idea. Possibly because it was 2003 when this
- 51:31Mm-hmm.
- 51:31I didn't know that either until I researched this.
- 51:34came out and I was under five years old.
- 51:36So like that pretty much has always been a song since I've known about pirates.
- 51:42Mm-hmm.
- 51:43And these movies have been around since I've pretty much known about pirates.
- 51:46That's like peak pirate th obsession.
- 51:49When you're in kindergarten.
- 51:53So yeah, I didn't know
- 51:54Yeah.
- 51:55that. I didn't realize till this week that that movie was from the ~
- 51:58That Disney wrote the pirate song Yo Ho Yo Ho.
- 52:01Did you think that
- 52:02Yes, I had no idea.
- 52:04it's like from antiquity, like the pirates were actually singing Yo Ho Yoho,
- 52:07Thought it was some shanty. Yes.
- 52:08A Pirate's Life for Me?
- 52:11So I think we're all in agreement.
- 52:13The the music in this movie is pretty spectacular.
- 52:16Excellent.
- 52:16Would would you all
- 52:17It's very good.
- 52:17agree?
- 52:18I would consider
- 52:18Yeah.
- 52:19it top ten movie scores of all time.
- 52:20Mm-hmm. Okay, okay.
- 52:23If you guys speaking of
- 52:23I'm comfortable saying that.
- 52:25doing rankings, w who would you guys have on your composers,
- 52:29Matt Rushmore? If you could pick four film composers.
- 52:30He's choosing he's
- 52:31choosing John Williams for all four slots.
- 52:32I I can't I can't not go John Williams.
- 52:34John Williams has to be on there,
- 52:34I you know. Mm-hmm.
- 52:36and then Hans Zimmer right next to John Williams.
- 52:36He's going Thomas Newman.
- 52:39Interesting. You can make a case for
- 52:40~
- 52:41it. Thomas Newman.
- 52:43I'm I'm
- 52:43guessing old Jonathan's not mine.
- 52:45Okay.
- 52:45It's a good
- 52:45I like
- 52:46Thomas Newman, but all of his s scores sound like Finding Nemo.
- 52:49Like Finding Nemo is the Thomas
- 52:49How Howard Yeah.
- 52:51Newman score, then all the other ones are just variations on Finding Nemo.
- 52:54Yeah.
- 52:55I I would say Howard Shore is up there.
- 52:57~
- 52:57Yep, I would
- 52:57Ooh.
- 52:58have him at three.
- 52:59I wanna say not Michael Giachino because his superhero sci fi stuff
- 53:04has been making me so mad for some reason.
- 53:06But his Incredibles was was incredible.
- 53:07His incredible score is pretty
- 53:09iconic, yeah. Yeah.
- 53:09He he does
- 53:10really great work and then sometimes it's it's similar,
- 53:13yeah. ~
- 53:15So you got three of my four. You got John Williams,
- 53:17Yeah.
- 53:17Hans Zimmer, Howard Shore,
- 53:19Trevor Rabin.
- 53:21Trevor Evan.
- 53:21yeah.
- 53:23National treasure score alone.
- 53:23Only because I
- 53:24love that score and it's so weird and it's also like
- 53:27Ha ha.
- 53:27I can't
- 53:27think of a single national treasure soundtrack.
- 53:30Yeah.
- 53:31Dude,
- 53:32you'll you'll you'll understand when you hear it.
- 53:35It
- 53:35is like I would pull the all nighters at in college during like finals week
- 53:40and I would listen to that and be so productive while studying.
- 53:43It's like
- 53:43Mm-hmm.
- 53:44I'm working on a treasure hunt so I can pass this stats test.
- 53:47Anyways, it's near and dear to my heart,
- 53:50but I don't think he deserves Mount Rushmore.
- 53:51Did that work for you?
- 53:51Yeah.
- 53:53Mm-hmm.
- 53:54My last one I would give it in a heartbeat to Danny Elfman.
- 53:59I I
- 53:59Good.
- 54:00I considered that, yeah.
- 54:02I would say Hans Zimmer also, mostly because of his Prince of Egypt.
- 54:08Yeah.
- 54:08Crossing the Red Sea. That's like my favorite piece of classical music ever.
- 54:13So Yeah,
- 54:17Yeah. Well there we go.
- 54:17I don't know.
- 54:19I'm gonna leave my third one open.
- 54:22Okay.
- 54:23I I'm very interested with with the new Harry Potter series with Hans Zimmer's gonna
- 54:28be doing the score for those for those episodes.
- 54:30Is he really?
- 54:31So it's it's gonna be like a John Williams versus Hans Zimmer matchup.
- 54:34Ooh.
- 54:35I think that'll be kinda interesting.
- 54:37I don't think John Williams even cares.
- 54:39Yeah.
- 54:42Mm-hmm.
- 54:43He seems like he's chasing Dolly's shadow.
- 54:43Yeah. He he's
- 54:46yikes. Yeah.
- 54:50That's gonna be so sad.
- 54:53That Dolly didn't get to see the new series.
- 54:57Yeah.
- 54:58I heard she
- 54:58was hanging on. I heard that's what she wanted to to see.
- 55:01They were about to shoot steel
- 55:02magnolias too.
- 55:05S still magnoliene?
- 55:09Ha ha
- 55:12Still Magnolias. We'll workshop that one.
- 55:15Magnolia
- 55:15trees in London.
- 55:15Yeah. Mm-hmm.
- 55:19Alright, so I think we have an accord on the music.
- 55:22Get it an accord.
- 55:23Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.
- 55:24We we do have an accord, we do have a
- 55:26We are all
- 55:26Okay, we'll get in a point.
- 55:26in one accord on
- 55:27the music.
- 55:30wrong button.
- 55:34There we go. Alright, so our next test is the story test,
- 55:39I believe. Yeah, we'll do
- 55:40Yep. Mm-hmm.
- 55:41the story test. So, ~ ba-ba-ba-ba.
- 55:47So from page to screen, is the script a masterpiece,
- 55:51or was another draft needed? In other words,
- 55:53is this a Paddington too or the squeakel?
- 55:57I think the writing in the story
- 56:00is my favorite Pirates movie out of all five.
- 56:06I think it's very good.
- 56:07Yeah, the pretty handily. Yeah.
- 56:09Yeah.
- 56:09Heavily good. ~ yes,
- 56:13I'm gonna pass it. I don't know why I wouldn't pass it,
- 56:16but I have a couple things to say about it.
- 56:19This is the essential pirates movie.
- 56:21This is a better movie than Muppet's Treasure Island.
- 56:24And I do not say that lightly.
- 56:26I know you don't.
- 56:27Note it.
- 56:28Consider your words marked.
- 56:30Well, I I have a couple of facts too.
- 56:34Maybe it's the same things that Jeremy has,
- 56:35but I was gonna mention those and th then maybe throw it to Kyle because
- 56:39out out of the three of us, I feel like Kyle's the writer amongst us.
- 56:41Kyle knows he knows the most about film in general.
- 56:42He can
- 56:45he's probably got some good insights into this script here.
- 56:46Yeah, we're kinda bearing the lead.
- 56:47Mm hmm. Yeah.
- 56:48Not only am I the guy that knows the most about Disney,
- 56:51Mm-hmm.
- 56:51I'm also just
- 56:52the guy who knows the most about movies.
- 56:54And as honored as I am that that you had me on,
- 56:57I'm equally offended that I'm appearing at episode 155.
- 57:01And I am not counting the appearance.
- 57:02Well, because you hate a lot of the movies that we love and we almost
- 57:04I am not counting
- 57:06when you called me at eleven
- 57:08thirty at night to ask me about John Malkovich and then put that behind a paywall?
- 57:12Yes,
- 57:14yes,
- 57:14You woke me up
- 57:15to talk to me about John Malkovich and then put it behind a paywall.
- 57:19No, that was a r that was on the real episode.
- 57:19~ that that was John English. That was a real episode.
- 57:21The paywall the paywall was a separate
- 57:22That was on a real episode?
- 57:25review of something. I forgot what it was.
- 57:26What sh what did I do
- 57:27that was on the paywall? What were we talking about?
- 57:28It was inside out two. We did a Patreon episode,
- 57:30that's right. That's
- 57:30Inside out too, 'cause we all saw it together.
- 57:32R. I. P.
- 57:33right. We did. Yes.
- 57:35Mm-hmm.
- 57:36Yeah, well Jeremy and I have many things in common.
- 57:39We are friends because of a lot of things,
- 57:42and we're also friends in spite of a lot of things,
- 57:44Yes.
- 57:44and one of those
- 57:45is our taste in movies.
- 57:47I like movies, Kyle likes films.
- 57:49And you can put it that way. I would consider this both a movie and a film.
- 57:50Good good good distinction.
- 57:51I don't like being bored in a movie.
- 57:52Yeah, no, this is that's why we asked you.
- 57:53Yeah. Mm-hmm.
- 57:54Okay.
- 57:56Honestly,
- 57:57our first question was like, y okay,
- 58:00Kyle was he actually did the ride.
- 58:02He he's perfectly qualified for this.
- 58:04But our
- 58:04I did pirates.
- 58:04Mm-hmm.
- 58:05first thing to say was, ~ check his letterbox score,
- 58:09'cause if he didn't like this we don't want him on.
- 58:10Mm-hmm.
- 58:12And you gave it a three point five out of five.
- 58:14And at first I was like, ~ that's not high enough.
- 58:17That's not good enough. But then Jonathan was like
- 58:17I was like I was like that's that's good
- 58:18That's not good enough.
- 58:20for Kyle
- 58:21That's great for Kyle.
- 58:22That's
- 58:23like a B. A seven out of ten? Yeah,
- 58:24Yeah. Yeah. So
- 58:25yeah. That's that's what I would say.
- 58:26Yeah. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
- 58:28I'd give this movie a straight old B.
- 58:30Mm-hmm.
- 58:30Right down the middle.
- 58:31So like a lot of the movies
- 58:33we've covered, Kyle hates and we just w we d we don't wanna spread that negativity
- 58:36out, so
- 58:38Yeah, I'm sorry that you don't feel like you could have me on for country bears
- 58:42and just have a bro love fest about
- 58:44We would never
- 58:44have let you be on that one. Hope you hope you know that.
- 58:48It's my favorite movie of my childhood.
- 58:48Mm-hmm.
- 58:48I'm surprised you let me be on an episode this close to you doing the country bears,
- 58:52'cause
- 58:54Say what you need to say.
- 58:56No, I'm I love you guys enough to keep it inside.
- 59:00I guess my
- 59:00so
- 59:01question would be when we're talking about story are we doing are
- 59:03we talking about screenplay? Is that a different category?
- 59:06Or are we just including that all?
- 59:07It's just a culmination of everything.
- 59:08Okay.
- 59:08It's it's kind of all all together.
- 59:10I I just wanted to have a chance I feel like when we would talk about characters,
- 59:14which is a future test, and acting in the
- 59:16Mm-hmm.
- 59:16characters, we would start getting into the story and just like what
- 59:19Yeah.
- 59:19elements we liked or what was good,
- 59:21what wasn't, you know, so that's why this is like a separate category.
- 59:25Gotcha.
- 59:27I okay, a couple of like story notes.
- 59:29one of the reasons Jerry Bruckheimer wanted to do this movie,
- 59:33or or at least was sold on like doing a pirate movie in general.
- 59:37was because of the supernatural element to the story.
- 59:40So if it was just like a straight up pirate movie,
- 59:43I don't think he was going to be interested in it.
- 59:44~ the other thing I saw was Gore Verbinsky,
- 59:49the director, was just intrigued to do a pirate movie because at that time
- 59:55you didn't really see a lot of those coming across his desk.
- 59:58Like, you know, th they just didn't make pirate
- 59:59Mm-hmm.
- 1:00:00movies anymore. They were kind of out of fashion.
- 1:00:02So he wanted a chance to do
- 1:00:04a take for like a new generation,
- 1:00:07obviously, and kind of redefine the genre.
- 1:00:09but one thing he he said
- 1:00:11And he did that.
- 1:00:12in his in his comments was he liked that the mutiny had already taken place.
- 1:00:17And I took note of that because I thought that was interesting.
- 1:00:20Yeah.
- 1:00:20Like that's
- 1:00:21Mm-hmm.
- 1:00:21kind of a trope in a pirate movie is eventually they're gonna overthrow the captain,
- 1:00:25throw him overboard, there's gonna be a mutiny.
- 1:00:27And in this case you're kind of seeing Jack
- 1:00:30You don't know it from the start.
- 1:00:32You kind of get these bits and pieces and as the movie goes along you kind
- 1:00:36of fill in the backstory. But he's kind of trying to recover from yeah,
- 1:00:40like getting his ship back after being like you know,
- 1:00:43his crew mutinying him on that island.
- 1:00:46I would say yeah, it's great in that regard,
- 1:00:49mostly because I think they left so much up to the imagination
- 1:00:55for what has already happened and you have to figure it out along the way.
- 1:00:58But like I feel like it's more justified to have a prequel than a sequel.
- 1:01:03Well, I think that's why one of my least favorite parts of the movie
- 1:01:06is where you have a three minute thing of Gibbs explaining to ~ Will that
- 1:01:12he has a actual reason for being little woo-woo,
- 1:01:15whatever you wanna whatever is I feel like
- 1:01:18Yeah.
- 1:01:18Orlando Broom really wanted to do that,
- 1:01:20so they had to come up with that,
- 1:01:21but the whole thing is you're like,
- 1:01:22Yeah.
- 1:01:23Yeah, that that part actually took me out of the movie.
- 1:01:23Why is this guy like
- 1:01:25this? Why why is he doing this?
- 1:01:26Yeah. Mm-hmm.
- 1:01:27And the
- 1:01:28fact that you have to be like,
- 1:01:29Well, he got dehydrated.
- 1:01:32He was on an island. ~
- 1:01:34Yeah.
- 1:01:34yeah, that that's definitely one of the weaker
- 1:01:35But reason has nothing to do with it.
- 1:01:36parts. Yeah, reason has nothing to do with it.
- 1:01:38~ I really liked that I guess I'm considering choreography,
- 1:01:44like s fight scenes as writing.
- 1:01:46Mm-hmm.
- 1:01:46'Cause
- 1:01:47I don't know where else to put that.
- 1:01:48~ but I think the sword fight is a better fight scene than any lightsaber battle
- 1:01:55in the original trilogy of Star Wars.
- 1:01:59I disagree, but
- 1:02:00And technically
- 1:02:00You might get
- 1:02:00some emails on that one.
- 1:02:01he used a red hot
- 1:02:02saber.
- 1:02:04Yeah.
- 1:02:06But I don't know. I think it's one of the better
- 1:02:08I know the original trilogy wasn't
- 1:02:10up to the standards of the prequel trilogy lightsaber battles,
- 1:02:12but like I still like, you know,
- 1:02:15a cloud city battle or d okay,
- 1:02:15He's better than anything Obi Wan could have swung.
- 1:02:17Let's just say that. ~ Animatronic looking.
- 1:02:18definitely better than a new hope.
- 1:02:18Cloud City you got Cloud City and then also ~ Vader Vader and Luke
- 1:02:19On the Death Star too.
- 1:02:24Yeah, that's that's a great that's a great battle,
- 1:02:24on ~ Return of the Jedi. I mean you got two pretty iconic ones.
- 1:02:27great climax. Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:02:28I said what I said.
- 1:02:30Okay, alright,
- 1:02:31just letting you know you got might
- 1:02:31I said what I said.
- 1:02:33So but I I genuinely do believe that it is better.
- 1:02:35And that's just my opinion.
- 1:02:37It is good. I I don't remember the guy's name,
- 1:02:40but they did have someone d ~ someone that's like worked with like Errol Flynn like
- 1:02:45some some person that has worked like in Hollywood movies.
- 1:02:48That guy's really old!
- 1:02:50He was an old man. He he had like worked on so many Hollywood movies and
- 1:02:54he did all the sword fighting like choreography on this movie.
- 1:02:56Mm.
- 1:02:57So I I don't have the name.
- 1:02:58Is that true? I
- 1:02:59guess yeah. I mean he would be super old.
- 1:03:02I guess he could technically have someone worked I'd I'll look into that,
- 1:03:05yeah.
- 1:03:06Yeah.
- 1:03:07Mm-hmm.
- 1:03:09~
- 1:03:10As far as the story, like I I feel like I think it's a good ~ it's good premise
- 1:03:17and like something you said earlier,
- 1:03:19Jeremy, is there there's a lot of like like those rule of threes,
- 1:03:22there's a lot of like recurring themes
- 1:03:23Mm-hmm.
- 1:03:24that get called back, but they have a purpose.
- 1:03:26They don't like they don't like not go anywhere.
- 1:03:28They all have like a satisfying payoff
- 1:03:28Yeah, they pay off. Yeah.
- 1:03:31at in the end. And so I I like that.
- 1:03:35~ I think there's a lot of full circle moments within the writing,
- 1:03:38but like even with the sword fighting,
- 1:03:40like they're fighting each other,
- 1:03:43but by the end they're sword fighting everybody together.
- 1:03:46Just a little bit of full circle moment there.
- 1:03:48Were were either of you confused the first time you saw this movie?
- 1:03:51Cause I I was. Like Yeah.
- 1:03:54Confused as a five year old?
- 1:03:54Well I was eight, so probably.
- 1:03:55Yeah.
- 1:03:56Like just following the story.
- 1:03:58So my I remember watching this at a friend's house and I remember it
- 1:04:02was like this kind of a dark like the color palettes and stuff is kind
- 1:04:06of a dark movie. And I remember watching this like middle of the day,
- 1:04:09the sun's like shining on the TV screen.
- 1:04:11So I was having a hard time like seeing some of the characters and stuff.
- 1:04:15But I feel like I was having a hard time following just like the curse,
- 1:04:19why some were like undead,
- 1:04:23some weren't. But it's one of those things that
- 1:04:24Yeah.
- 1:04:25as I've rewatched it, I've like pieced it together more.
- 1:04:28But I do remember the first time being kind of confused by the story.
- 1:04:31I don't know. Mm-hmm.
- 1:04:32It makes perfect sense now.
- 1:04:35But the only other thing I don't understand is like it seems like some of the
- 1:04:39Why the women kept slapping Jack Sparrow?
- 1:04:43No that's what that stuff
- 1:04:43Well you see Jeremy.
- 1:04:44that's they're putting that in the prequel.
- 1:04:45Ha ha ha.
- 1:04:47Okay. Now that I might watch that.
- 1:04:49That's
- 1:04:49HBO prequel.
- 1:04:51like the Mamma Mia Here We Go Again,
- 1:04:53but for Pirates of the Caribbean,
- 1:04:53Yes.
- 1:04:55where you gotta see why each of the women slap Jack Sparrow.
- 1:04:58Ha ha ha.
- 1:05:00I'm giving this away for free.
- 1:05:00I that
- 1:05:01that'd be a good Disney Plus show.
- 1:05:02That's such a good mm.
- 1:05:05The dating life of Jack Sparrow.
- 1:05:07Mm-hmm.
- 1:05:08what was I saying?
- 1:05:10you weren't sure how the curse worked?
- 1:05:13yeah, something about ~ like sustaining their injuries after
- 1:05:18the curse like goes away.
- 1:05:20Mm-hmm. Is lifted? Yeah.
- 1:05:22Yeah,
- 1:05:23because like everybody's getting stabbed,
- 1:05:26everybody's getting shot, and some of survived afterwards,
- 1:05:31right?
- 1:05:33Yeah. I'm still iffy on it.
- 1:05:35Yeah, the thing with Barbosa at
- 1:05:36the end was a little like I I didn't know the timing of it had
- 1:05:39How did Barbosa
- 1:05:40die if he got shot before? You know?
- 1:05:45I didn't know if like if Will had like had the coin in his hand,
- 1:05:48he had the blood on the coin, but he didn't drop it in with the rest of
- 1:05:52Did he need to drop
- 1:05:53Right.
- 1:05:53it? That's what I don't know.
- 1:05:55Maybe maybe not, yeah.
- 1:05:57I don't know. He needed to die so that he can come back in future installments.
- 1:06:01Yeah.
- 1:06:01That's the real answer right there.
- 1:06:03That's
- 1:06:03that sequel logic.
- 1:06:04Don't spoil
- 1:06:04it for those who haven't seen this
- 1:06:05Ha ha.
- 1:06:06yet. Yeah,
- 1:06:09he comes back with tentacle beard.
- 1:06:10~ okay,
- 1:06:13so greed is what made them cursed,
- 1:06:15and now they are consumed by it.
- 1:06:18I love the story where pirates are like cons they're cursed because
- 1:06:22of their piratiness. Like
- 1:06:24Mm-hmm.
- 1:06:25it's i
- 1:06:27Usually you see a pirate and you know karma comes around,
- 1:06:30but like this is such a perfect symbolism for what a pirate does.
- 1:06:34And they have to stay a pirate.
- 1:06:36I don't know. Greed comes with a cost.
- 1:06:37You like you like your pirate
- 1:06:39rec or your pirate movies with moral reckonings.
- 1:06:41Yeah. There's also
- 1:06:42Yeah, yeah. I I wanna I wanna
- 1:06:44I've always wanted to be a pirate,
- 1:06:46but I don't wanna be a bad person,
- 1:06:47you know.
- 1:06:48Mm-hmm.
- 1:06:49More of a veggie tails pirate,
- 1:06:50you know.
- 1:06:50You
- 1:06:50just wanna yeah. You know they don't really do anything.
- 1:06:53There's also the interesting wrinkle where it's
- 1:06:57Basically a cruise.
- 1:06:59a pirate movie where they're trying to return the treasure instead
- 1:07:02of get the treasure. They're trying to get the treasure to put it back.
- 1:07:04Yeah. That is that is interesting.
- 1:07:05That that that is a funny idea,
- 1:07:06Yeah, which is kinda funny.
- 1:07:07yeah.
- 1:07:10Yeah.
- 1:07:10~
- 1:07:14so it's like yeah, they're technically free to pillage and do the pirate thing with
- 1:07:18no consequences. Even it's kinda like a superpower for if you're gonna be
- 1:07:22a full on pirate, but they lose their humanity at the same time.
- 1:07:27And they just
- 1:07:27You can do whatever you want, you're just not gonna enjoy anything.
- 1:07:31Right, right, right.
- 1:07:31Yeah.
- 1:07:32Like I I really liked
- 1:07:32Which, as someone who's married to a therapist,
- 1:07:34is called Anidonia. It's in the DSM,
- 1:07:36Huh.
- 1:07:37and you can treat it. I was get I I wish like Elizabeth,
- 1:07:42when he's like, no matter what we did,
- 1:07:44we wouldn't feel nothin'. I was she was like,
- 1:07:47Ha ha ha.
- 1:07:47You
- 1:07:48need some SRIs. What you have is medically diagnosable.
- 1:07:51Ha ha ha.
- 1:07:52And then he turns into
- 1:07:52Ha ha
- 1:07:53a skeleton and she's like, never mind!
- 1:07:56He can't even s eat the pills.
- 1:07:58It'll just go through his ribcage.
- 1:07:59Yeah. That would be a cool image.
- 1:08:00~
- 1:08:02I
- 1:08:04I liked the the moment with Barbosa's got that green apple that he's like he's just
- 1:08:10kind of holding and playing with it like throughout different
- 1:08:12Mm-hmm.
- 1:08:12scenes with with Elizabeth.
- 1:08:13Yeah.
- 1:08:14And then later on,
- 1:08:14Kind of a motif.
- 1:08:15yeah, ~ when Jack's on board, like he grabs it from him and eats it and then hands
- 1:08:21Yeah.
- 1:08:21it back to him and just like the way Barbosa's like disgusted,
- 1:08:24'cause he can't like he can't eat it and enjoy it.
- 1:08:25He can't eat it. Yeah.
- 1:08:26It's got a bite taken out of it now.
- 1:08:28Mm-hmm.
- 1:08:28And he
- 1:08:28just like throws it overboard.
- 1:08:30And I I just thought that was a
- 1:08:31Kind of a cool little subtle thing.
- 1:08:32Then of course you also have
- 1:08:33I love it.
- 1:08:33the biblical thing with the fruit and the curse and the Yeah.
- 1:08:37True. And the snow
- 1:08:37Yeah, mm-hmm. Yeah.
- 1:08:38No.
- 1:08:39white where she thought it was poisoned?
- 1:08:41Yeah.
- 1:08:41Mm. Yeah, that's a little Disney for ya.
- 1:08:44~
- 1:08:47I also like how the first I guess I'm spoiling the second movie,
- 1:08:51the end of the second movie where he comes back.
- 1:08:53and he eats a bite of the apple when he says hi to everybody.
- 1:08:58Mm. That's true. That is a good moment.
- 1:08:58So it's sort of like a full circle part there.
- 1:08:59Mm-hmm.
- 1:09:00Yeah.
- 1:09:01Do you know why they called this Curse of the Black Pearl?
- 1:09:05Do you know?
- 1:09:08Because ~ Michael Eisner
- 1:09:09Yeah.
- 1:09:10preferred that name over
- 1:09:12Okay.
- 1:09:13Curse of the Aztec Gold or something like that.
- 1:09:15Like the s ship was not cursed,
- 1:09:16Okay.
- 1:09:16Okay. Yeah. That's true.
- 1:09:17the people on it were. So it was a compromise.
- 1:09:19Mm-hmm.
- 1:09:20Mm-hmm.
- 1:09:21~
- 1:09:23Gore Verbinski hated that. He did not want it to be called that.
- 1:09:26~ but he compromised and had marketing team put like Curse of the Black Pearl very
- 1:09:32tiny at the bottom of the movie.
- 1:09:34Would it have even
- 1:09:35had a subtitle or would it just have been Pirates of the Caribbean?
- 1:09:38Well, he wanted it to be more sequalized.
- 1:09:40~ and then that's why they called it something.
- 1:09:41Okay. Eisner did? Yeah.
- 1:09:44Yeah. ~
- 1:09:46Well Eisner originally did not want to
- 1:09:46in case it was successful enough.
- 1:09:48do the movie because a bunch of the live action ride movies were bombing.
- 1:09:55Terribly. This was the first one that worked.
- 1:09:56See our previous episodes.
- 1:09:57Yeah, they because of
- 1:09:58Yeah.
- 1:09:59Country Bears, this movie almost didn't come out,
- 1:10:01which is a shame because ~ I'm fully
- 1:10:02Yeah, I want you to sit with that.
- 1:10:04I want you to just think about that.
- 1:10:05Hm?
- 1:10:06aware that it's not a great movie,
- 1:10:08but it is a a wonderful movie.
- 1:10:10That's because Disney fans didn't show up for that movie,
- 1:10:12okay? This isn't on
- 1:10:13Yeah.
- 1:10:13this isn't on Peter Hastings, the director of Country Bears,
- 1:10:16okay?
- 1:10:16It's not
- 1:10:17It absolutely is.
- 1:10:17our fault that two
- 1:10:18thousand two was one of the greatest movies for cinema,
- 1:10:20period.
- 1:10:22let's see what else, what else,
- 1:10:23what else? I love that Jack Sparrow's
- 1:10:24I mean go ahead.
- 1:10:25character I guess is part of his character,
- 1:10:27but he uses weaponized I don't know,
- 1:10:30like idiocracy to be like the best genius
- 1:10:33That's a good way to put it.
- 1:10:34pirate. He's like I consider him the Jar Jar Binks of Pirates of the Caribbean.
- 1:10:38No, no. I will take No.
- 1:10:39Because Jar Jar Binks is secretly a genius,
- 1:10:43but he's
- 1:10:43Mm-hmm.
- 1:10:44clumsy too.
- 1:10:47Yo you I will take Columbo and Bugs Bunny,
- 1:10:51but you don't you don't get Char Binks.
- 1:10:51Currently Kyle is commenting
- 1:10:53on his own episode right now. No
- 1:11:00Stop it.
- 1:11:01I've
- 1:11:02never thought of Jar Jar once while watching this movie,
- 1:11:05and I'm very mad that you're making me think about Jar Jar now.
- 1:11:09He's basically y was inspired by Jar Jar Binks's character,
- 1:11:15so much so that Johnny Depp got an Oscar nomination for this role.
- 1:11:19Sit with that one, Kyle.
- 1:11:23~ I won't. But thank you.
- 1:11:25Kyle is anti Binks if you haven't heard.
- 1:11:28I'm very anti Binx. I'm in the anti Binx camp.
- 1:11:30I bet he doesn't even like
- 1:11:30Yeah.
- 1:11:31pineapple on pizza.
- 1:11:34This is true.
- 1:11:36Okay, so ~ I think it gets a story point.
- 1:11:40I mean, does anybody have any issues
- 1:11:41Very much.
- 1:11:42with the story? I feel like it's a good a good story,
- 1:11:44it was worth making. Kyle, do you have any thoughts?
- 1:11:46My my issues
- 1:11:47aren't enough to not give it a point.
- 1:11:49One
- 1:11:49Okay.
- 1:11:50second.
- 1:11:50Yeah. All right.
- 1:11:54It's a good enough story. ~ it's it's maybe fifteen,
- 1:11:57twenty minutes too long. It stalls it stalls in a couple places.
- 1:12:00It is very long. Yeah.
- 1:12:03story story is different than screenplay though.
- 1:12:05I think there's things about the screenplay we've already talked about,
- 1:12:08dialogue, character choices that really elevate it.
- 1:12:10Mm-hmm. Yeah.
- 1:12:10~
- 1:12:11Yeah.
- 1:12:11but it's
- 1:12:12a very passable story. And like you said,
- 1:12:14it is definitely the best story of all of them.
- 1:12:16It's the most grounded.
- 1:12:18Yeah. Yeah. And almost I it was s it wasn't really setting up for a sequel too much.
- 1:12:24So it's very itself there was always gonna be one,
- 1:12:26Well, there was always gonna be one.
- 1:12:27I guess I it was
- 1:12:29yeah.
- 1:12:29kind of a question until it came out,
- 1:12:30but yeah.
- 1:12:32Yeah, and then it was the greatest movie of all time.
- 1:12:34okay, so the acting test.
- 1:12:38~
- 1:12:38Okay.
- 1:12:40we like to consider this like
- 1:12:43Is this Robin Williams versus the Rock in comparison?
- 1:12:46So like in every Robin Williams movie,
- 1:12:48you're playing a character and you know that it's Robin Williams,
- 1:12:52but he fits so well in this character.
- 1:12:55And then when you're the rock in a movie,
- 1:12:57that character just sinks to the bottom because he's the rock.
- 1:13:00Is i is the acting believable?
- 1:13:03You you don't think The Rock became
- 1:13:05someone else in the jungle cruise?
- 1:13:06You felt like you're watching The Rock when you're watching the Jungle Cruise?
- 1:13:10The rock became an actual
- 1:13:11rock in the jungle cruise. So True story if you haven't seen
- 1:13:13Yeah. ~
- 1:13:17that movie.
- 1:13:19I have not.
- 1:13:20It's not great. ~ Yeah,
- 1:13:25so it what w what do you guys think about the acting?
- 1:13:28I think since Johnny Depp got an Oscar nomination,
- 1:13:32this automatically is passing.
- 1:13:34~ who's
- 1:13:35Yeah, yeah, yeah. This is green.
- 1:13:35I'll
- 1:13:36the worst actor?
- 1:13:40Honestly, it's probably Orlando Bloom.
- 1:13:41Maybe Orlando Bloom.
- 1:13:42Yep.
- 1:13:42I was gonna
- 1:13:43say that he sucks.
- 1:13:45I I was gonna mention to you guys,
- 1:13:47see, I I mean I didn't know who Johnny Depp was when this movie came out.
- 1:13:51I was interested in this movie because the guy that was in Lord of the Rings
- 1:13:54was in this. Like Legolas is in a new movie.
- 1:13:56That's
- 1:13:56Yeah.
- 1:13:57probably gonna be good. ~ Aragorn is in this movie called Hidalgo.
- 1:14:01That's probably gonna be good.
- 1:14:02Mm.
- 1:14:03You know, so that that's why I went to see Pirates of the Caribbean.
- 1:14:06And
- 1:14:06Yeah.
- 1:14:07so I left the movie feeling like,
- 1:14:10like he
- 1:14:11was not the star of that movie.
- 1:14:13It's all about yeah,
- 1:14:14No, no.
- 1:14:15Jack Sparrow.
- 1:14:17Argumentatively, it's debatable that Elizabeth Swan is the main character
- 1:14:22of this movie.
- 1:14:23Yeah. Mm-hmm.
- 1:14:24It's a little trio, I kinda like it.
- 1:14:26It is a bit of a trio, but I think that's one of the things that works
- 1:14:30so well in this movie is the main
- 1:14:31Mm-hmm.
- 1:14:32character is split into two side characters,
- 1:14:34and then the side character is the main character.
- 1:14:37Yeah.
- 1:14:38And it works so much better that
- 1:14:38Right, right, right, right, right.
- 1:14:39way. It's almost like s Elizabeth Swan and Will Turner are like the same character.
- 1:14:45They have a lot of the same.
- 1:14:46Well, they have the same last name for most of it.
- 1:14:49Yes, that's true.
- 1:14:52But yeah, it's it's really interesting because you would normally use Johnny Depp
- 1:14:57as the side character and Orlando Bloom would be the main character,
- 1:15:00but you keep the you keep the characterizations and you just flip
- 1:15:04the screen time and it works so much better this way because just Johnny Depp just
- 1:15:08made this role so interesting.
- 1:15:10i th he didn't have to go so hard in a completely different direction
- 1:15:15of what a pirate is in everyone's mind.
- 1:15:17Like Barbosa
- 1:15:18Yeah.
- 1:15:18did that. He plays the perfect pirate but like
- 1:15:21Mm-hmm. That's right.
- 1:15:24Jack Sparrow is Keith Richards but a pirate.
- 1:15:30Once you know he's doing Keith Richards,
- 1:15:32like you can't unsee it, but I don't think anyone
- 1:15:34Yeah, it is kinda
- 1:15:34Mm-hmm.
- 1:15:35knew he was going to be doing that till he showed up on set and started.
- 1:15:39And they're kinda like, What do we do?
- 1:15:39Yes, they were actually the Disney
- 1:15:39Mm-hmm.
- 1:15:41Do we just let him?
- 1:15:43Possibly. I I noticed he was a little bit grinchy,
- 1:15:47like Jim Carrey's the Grinch. In some in
- 1:15:50Mm, okay.
- 1:15:51just in some of his movements.
- 1:15:52I don't know.
- 1:15:57~
- 1:15:57Okay.
- 1:15:57But
- 1:15:57that's this is one of those things that's kind of like a Will Ferrell and elf.
- 1:16:00While you're making it, you're like,
- 1:16:01this is either genius or it's gonna go over in flames.
- 1:16:05It's g it's gonna go over like
- 1:16:06Yes.
- 1:16:07a lead balloon. And there's a couple instances where it turns
- 1:16:10out it's actually genius. And then there's other instances
- 1:16:12It is genius.
- 1:16:13like Dane O'Carvey and Master of Disguise where you're like,
- 1:16:16We might never work again. If we let this guy keep doing this,
- 1:16:16Genius.
- 1:16:20this might be the last film any of us make.
- 1:16:20I'm not sure he did work
- 1:16:22again actually.
- 1:16:23Jeremy, programming
- 1:16:24He's yeah, he's also in jail.
- 1:16:25note, let's not have Kyle on for Master of Disguise.
- 1:16:28~ no. Not yet,
- 1:16:28Okay. Noted.
- 1:16:29~ have you guys not done that one already?
- 1:16:31I would have thought
- 1:16:31Nah.
- 1:16:32but we will.
- 1:16:33that you would have done all the children's movies that got zero percent
- 1:16:36on Rotten Tomatoes, so I stand corrected.
- 1:16:37'Cause
- 1:16:38our taste is so horrible. Okay.
- 1:16:41yeah, he read it he I was gonna finish something up with the Keith Richards.
- 1:16:42~ okay, I wanted to ask you guys a question.
- 1:16:44~ go ahead, Jeremy. Okay.
- 1:16:47The reason he
- 1:16:48chose Keith Richards is because he was reading books about pirates
- 1:16:52and somebody some historian was like,
- 1:16:55Yeah, they were kinda like the rock stars of their time So then he
- 1:16:58Mm-hmm.
- 1:16:58decided I'm gonna model this after Keith Richards who kinda already looks like
- 1:17:02Keith Richards was probably alive
- 1:17:03a pirate.
- 1:17:04during the time of Pirates of the Caribbean is set.
- 1:17:08Probably. That
- 1:17:10Yeah.
- 1:17:10One of my favourite
- 1:17:11was actual footage w
- 1:17:12his cameo.
- 1:17:15we already kinda talked about how Will Turner or Orlando Bloom was
- 1:17:18not a great actor, but he gets better.
- 1:17:20It's ironic
- 1:17:21that he's a blacksmith, but also the weakest link.
- 1:17:24Zoe Zaldana's in this movie. Surprisingly,
- 1:17:26She is a very young Zoe Seldana.
- 1:17:26Yeah. Mm-hmm. Yeah.
- 1:17:28~
- 1:17:28Mm-hmm.
- 1:17:29she's been like a sneaky infiltrator in a lot of movie franchises.
- 1:17:32this is
- 1:17:33to be like one of her first, if not her first,
- 1:17:35like big speaking role in a movie?
- 1:17:35Very one of her very first roles
- 1:17:36Yeah.
- 1:17:38Jack the monkey is seen smiling when Barbosa thanks him specifically after
- 1:17:44he returns the Aztec coin to him and like you know,
- 1:17:48after Jack Sparrow chases him.
- 1:17:50~ in the special features it is revealed that the monkey did this purely by chance.
- 1:17:57And it wasn't planned out. But I think he's just a good actor.
- 1:18:01Monkeys can make choices. Why can't why is Merrill
- 1:18:02Yeah.
- 1:18:03They make choices.
- 1:18:04Streep allowed to make a choice,
- 1:18:05but the capuchin can't?
- 1:18:08The capuchin in Night of the Museum was a very good actor.
- 1:18:12Is this the same monkey? I'm inclined to think it's the same monkey.
- 1:18:14Definitely not. Definitely not.
- 1:18:15No? Different monkey? Okay. Hmm.
- 1:18:16No. nah. Definitely not. ~
- 1:18:20But i they're definitely related.
- 1:18:21There's a lot of nepotism in monkey business of Hollywood.
- 1:18:25I mean there can't be that many capuchins like just on call for Hollywood.
- 1:18:30It's not like there's capuchin casting calls.
- 1:18:33They've got maybe four or five of them.
- 1:18:34True.
- 1:18:35Yeah.
- 1:18:37Are we passing the acting test?
- 1:18:39Yeah, with automatic. ~
- 1:18:40I mean a aside from
- 1:18:41Orlando Bloom, I think everyone.
- 1:18:43Like Jeffrey Rush, e everyone is so good in this.
- 1:18:47I agree. Alright, we'll pass that.
- 1:18:48Mm-hmm. Jonathan Price?
- 1:18:49Alright, moving on to the characters
- 1:18:51test.
- 1:18:51Mm-hmm.
- 1:18:52We've got five different categories.
- 1:18:56And I added actually a sixth category of how we can fill this,
- 1:19:00fill these boxes. We've got the lead and hero,
- 1:19:03which is kind of confusing because there's three.
- 1:19:05~ but we talked about how well that works.
- 1:19:08we were just about to say something,
- 1:19:09right? You were like the this movie goes to the point of view of Will Turner.
- 1:19:13Yeah, wh who do you see the who do you think the p the POV character is
- 1:19:18for you when you watch it?
- 1:19:21I genuinely think it's ~ Elizabeth Swan.
- 1:19:24That's the right answer. Yeah.
- 1:19:24Okay. Mm-hmm. Yeah.
- 1:19:26Yeah. I I don't think we're supposed to ever be in the POV of ~
- 1:19:32Mm-hmm.
- 1:19:33Sparrow at all. That's
- 1:19:35Mm-hmm.
- 1:19:36kind of his thing, like he kind of like makes his own decisions by himself.
- 1:19:39Yeah. Mm-hmm.
- 1:19:40Like he doesn't show people
- 1:19:41Mm-hmm.
- 1:19:41his
- 1:19:41cards ever. Like even at the point where he's trying to escape from
- 1:19:46the jail cell and then Will comes down the stairs and he just like lays
- 1:19:50on the ground and acts like he was sleeping.
- 1:19:51Mm-hmm.
- 1:19:52Like he doesn't want to be seen
- 1:19:52Mm-hmm.
- 1:19:53as someone who's trying to figure something out.
- 1:19:55That's right. You don't have access to his
- 1:19:56Mm-hmm.
- 1:19:57part of his genius.
- 1:19:59to his thought process at any point.
- 1:20:01It's you're always reacting to whatever he just did.
- 1:20:02Yeah. Mm-hmm.
- 1:20:03Yeah.
- 1:20:04Yeah. Which makes
- 1:20:05Okay. Yeah.
- 1:20:06him one of the greatest side characters of all time.
- 1:20:08Elizabeth Swan is like the damsel in distress,
- 1:20:11but she's not your ordinary damsel,
- 1:20:13because she also low key wants to be a pirate.
- 1:20:15~ but she's very capable,
- 1:20:18hates corsets.
- 1:20:21Mm-hmm.
- 1:20:21But arguably
- 1:20:22the main character.
- 1:20:25I would say the point of view character,
- 1:20:27if not the main character. When the film opens,
- 1:20:29this is kinda interesting because it gets kinda into cognitive film theory,
- 1:20:32but when the film opens, you are in her point of view because she's the
- 1:20:38one that is experiencing the shipwreck that they pull Will on board.
- 1:20:43Yes.
- 1:20:43All
- 1:20:43of the information that you are getting is because she's in that situation.
- 1:20:48So you learn about the medallion.
- 1:20:50You don't have any information that she doesn't have.
- 1:20:53And that stays the same way through the movie.
- 1:20:56Even though you're ~ kind of omniscient,
- 1:20:59you jump back between Will and Jack and Elizabeth.
- 1:21:01Yeah.
- 1:21:02As Barbosa is explaining the curse and the mechanics and the mission
- 1:21:06of what they're doing, you are learning it at the same time as her.
- 1:21:09You are learning that they're all undead ghost pirates at the same time.
- 1:21:13You're supposed to be having
- 1:21:13Yes.
- 1:21:14the same cognitive experience as she is,
- 1:21:17so she's technically the POV character.
- 1:21:19Shall we talk about the rest of them?
- 1:21:21Yeah.
- 1:21:22Okay, yeah.
- 1:21:24We've got ~ great villains. We've got the Barbosa,
- 1:21:27kind of like a mutinous first mate.
- 1:21:29And I don't know.
- 1:21:32He's like such a great pirate.
- 1:21:34He's a better pirate than Captain Hook when it comes to villains.
- 1:21:38I think so. I like
- 1:21:40I mean, which Captain Hook are
- 1:21:41we talking about? Are we talking about classic nineteen fifty three animated,
- 1:21:43Justin Hoffman.
- 1:21:44Dustin Hoffman in the movie Hook?
- 1:21:46Are we talking about Christopher Walken in the ~ live television ~ musical that came
- 1:21:52out a few years ago?
- 1:21:53Always
- 1:21:53Christopher Walken.
- 1:21:55Yeah.
- 1:21:58Not an animatronic, he
- 1:21:59actually played Captain Hook.
- 1:22:01Is that technically a Disney film?
- 1:22:04I choose to think no.
- 1:22:06Okay. Cause he's only been in two Disney films.
- 1:22:12No?
- 1:22:13And he talks to a talking bear that sings.
- 1:22:16In a both of those, yeah. Jungle book.
- 1:22:16In both of them. Now what's what's what's the other one?
- 1:22:20What's country
- 1:22:21bears and junk that's right. In both of them.
- 1:22:24Yeah.
- 1:22:25Okay, so we've got Barbosa, he's a leader capable of mutiny,
- 1:22:28manipulation, and just sheer villainy.
- 1:22:30~ he has a monkey instead of a parrot,
- 1:22:33so he's very noticeable. and he always is carrying around
- 1:22:40a green apple. So he's a very iconic,
- 1:22:43notable villain when it comes to looks.
- 1:22:46But I just find him genuinely scary.
- 1:22:49Maybe just because he's all the pirates look scary in this movie.
- 1:22:54He's also got some jaundice going on.
- 1:22:54But he's also a Yep. Yep. Yep.
- 1:22:56That's a little freaky. That looks contagious.
- 1:22:58He's got some
- 1:22:58Yeah.
- 1:22:59Maybe a little pink eye.
- 1:23:00scurvy going on.
- 1:23:01He
- 1:23:02he's also just smart, you know,
- 1:23:04so he's just like I mean, compared to the crew and
- 1:23:04He is very smart. He's also kinda nice too though.
- 1:23:08yeah.
- 1:23:09Yeah, yeah, it's a nice guy.
- 1:23:10Like he was also kind of
- 1:23:11a kind grandpa. Like the moment where
- 1:23:13He he was a good host?
- 1:23:15he's very good host. But like when Elizabeth thought she she was gonna
- 1:23:20die after the blood and he was like,
- 1:23:22Ways not winked at her. I was like,
- 1:23:25That's such a grandpa thing to say.
- 1:23:27~ yeah, so the name Barbosa might have been derived from the real Turkish pirate
- 1:23:33Barbasoa. No barbacoa.
- 1:23:35Mm-hmm.
- 1:23:37Bar Barbarossa. Which means red beard in Latin.
- 1:23:42~ Barbasol,
- 1:23:43is that where we get Barbasol?
- 1:23:44Barbasol. Mm-hmm.
- 1:23:46because you the red beard that's genius.
- 1:23:48All right. Who would you say the supporting characters are,
- 1:23:51Jeremy? I mean, we've already talked
- 1:23:53I would say
- 1:23:54about Will and Elizabeth.
- 1:23:55If we are gonna consider those three as the trio,
- 1:23:57there's plenty more characters to go around.
- 1:23:58Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
- 1:23:59We can consider them the leads,
- 1:24:01and that's fine. ~
- 1:24:02Okay.
- 1:24:04supporting characters, I would say Gibbs as one.
- 1:24:07Mr. Gibbs, yeah. Mm-hmm.
- 1:24:08Mr. Gibbs is right there to explain everything
- 1:24:10that's going on. But it's like so good too.
- 1:24:12Yeah, he's kind of the exposition guy.
- 1:24:14Yeah, he's the exposition guy.
- 1:24:15Did they ever did
- 1:24:16they ever explain why he was like working with the British at first
- 1:24:20and then he becomes a pirate
- 1:24:20Dude, I don't know.
- 1:24:22later on in the movie? I guess yeah.
- 1:24:22Well he he he follows the money.
- 1:24:24That's what the pirates do, right?
- 1:24:25He's gonna go he's
- 1:24:26gonna go wherever the wind blows him.
- 1:24:29He just seemed scared of pirates at the start,
- 1:24:31but then he went and joined I guess,
- 1:24:33Maybe he has experience
- 1:24:34so
- 1:24:34with them. Maybe he was an undercover one.
- 1:24:35Well, do you think that could be l like
- 1:24:37a little Yeah, maybe he's undercover pirate.
- 1:24:39Yeah.
- 1:24:39Mm.
- 1:24:40Could maybe, yeah. That'll be in the prequel that Jeremy's talking about.
- 1:24:46Yeah.
- 1:24:47And the Mamma Mia, you know, musical.
- 1:24:50Yeah.
- 1:24:51Mm-hmm.
- 1:24:52Yeah, I would say Gibbs is a is the best supporting character
- 1:24:55Okay.
- 1:24:55here.
- 1:24:57I ~ I really like ~ Commodore Norrington.
- 1:25:01I feel like his character is
- 1:25:02I do too.
- 1:25:03really interesting because he he he comes across as competent,
- 1:25:10yet he never is gonna catch Captain Jack Sparrow,
- 1:25:13you know? Like he's always
- 1:25:14Right.
- 1:25:14gonna be chasing. He's never gonna get him.
- 1:25:17But he's also comes across like he's not like as competent,
- 1:25:23as smart, like
- 1:25:24It's not always his fault that like Jack slips through his fingers,
- 1:25:27you know. I don't know. I just thought that was kind of an interesting.
- 1:25:31They don't like portray him as like a buffoon,
- 1:25:33you know, type.
- 1:25:34Well, he he completely underestimates him at every single turn.
- 1:25:37Mm. Mm. Well that's that is true.
- 1:25:37It's not like he's he's bumbling,
- 1:25:38Yeah. It's gonna be the best worst pirate I've ever heard.
- 1:25:40Yeah.
- 1:25:40but if he was able to actually
- 1:25:43anticipate or just think that just just have the thought that he might
- 1:25:48be getting set up, then he would be able to kind of be a couple of steps ahead.
- 1:25:52But it doesn't even enter his mind that Jack might actually have something else
- 1:25:56in mind. And when he loses, that's that's probably one of the best sequences where
- 1:26:01he starts off on the one ship to go to the other ship.
- 1:26:04Yeah. The switcheroo.
- 1:26:05Yeah, that's great.
- 1:26:06~ okay, so minor characters and cameos.
- 1:26:09We don't really have any cameos in this one.
- 1:26:11We'll wait till the second one to talk about that one.
- 1:26:14But minor characters. I love cotton.
- 1:26:16Cotton is the best. The pirate that has a parrot that talks for him 'cause
- 1:26:21he got his tongue cut out.
- 1:26:23That that guy. Yeah.
- 1:26:25man, he's great. ~
- 1:26:26Yeah.
- 1:26:30Then we've got the scene stealer.
- 1:26:31We've got I'm gonna say Jack Sparrow is the scene stealer.
- 1:26:34And the main one
- 1:26:35Okay, okay.
- 1:26:36of the main leads. And then
- 1:26:36Yeah, yep. Automatic.
- 1:26:38the sixth category I've got is the dynamic duo.
- 1:26:41Okay, good.
- 1:26:43Reggeti and Pintel. Isn't that crazy
- 1:26:45I never knew their names until I looked up.
- 1:26:47that they're so iconic yet you don't know their names at all?
- 1:26:51Yeah. The the pirates, the one that has the the wooden eye and then the other guy.
- 1:26:57Everyone knows who he's talking about.
- 1:26:57The one eye guy and the short guy,
- 1:26:59yeah. Yeah.
- 1:26:59Yeah. ~
- 1:27:02yeah, they're de I put them as scene stealers,
- 1:27:04yeah, they're a a dynamic duo for sure.
- 1:27:06I I like the like the British officers duo that's like guarding
- 1:27:11the ship while they're having the I like them,
- 1:27:12They are also a great dynamic duo,
- 1:27:14but they get overshadowed by the pirate duo.
- 1:27:15okay. That that is true,
- 1:27:17So Mhm.
- 1:27:18that is true. Hmm.
- 1:27:21Yeah, the wooden eyeball is really genius because usually you see there
- 1:27:24was not one pirate that had a eye patch.
- 1:27:26Or no, cotton may have had an eye patch,
- 1:27:28right?
- 1:27:30I don't know, he's your guy.
- 1:27:30Think so.
- 1:27:31Yeah.
- 1:27:31But you'd think that you'd
- 1:27:32think that a pirate would have an eye patch,
- 1:27:35but he no, he just got a prosthetic.
- 1:27:36With splinters.
- 1:27:40Does Barbosa not wear an eye patch at any point?
- 1:27:42No? Okay. Hm.
- 1:27:43I don't think he does. Yeah.
- 1:27:43I d I don't think so.
- 1:27:46~
- 1:27:48yeah, they're I mean often we'll see a wooden leg,
- 1:27:51but not a wooden eyeball. I I really like that.
- 1:27:54Yeah, they kinda leaned away from the pirate tropes,
- 1:27:56yeah.
- 1:27:56I would watch an entire side story mov I would watch a Lion King one
- 1:28:00and a half version of just them.
- 1:28:02what I love about these characters is that they progress
- 1:28:07the plot and explain some things through some very side small tiny characters
- 1:28:14like like the those two soldiers.
- 1:28:17~ kind of explain like what what the black pearl was and like what you know.
- 1:28:23And I don't feel like movies do that anymore.
- 1:28:23Boot straps, bootstraps.
- 1:28:25I feel like every movie in major blockbuster these days,
- 1:28:29it's like here's the group of six people that are gonna save the whole movie
- 1:28:33and we gotta explain everything.
- 1:28:34And then like the it's like the six leads and then extras.
- 1:28:39But this it trickles down all the way through the entire like spectrum
- 1:28:45of characters. I love this.
- 1:28:48It's one of the better ways to do an exposition,
- 1:28:51not even a dump, but like you said,
- 1:28:53a trickle, where if
- 1:28:54Yeah.
- 1:28:54you have to get stuff out, you want to do it kind of like a old timey
- 1:28:58two two-hander British duo. And there's
- 1:29:01Yeah.
- 1:29:01a couple of those there. It's a good way to do it.
- 1:29:03Whereas now, because everyone's just assumed that they're gonna be on their phones,
- 1:29:07the studios are like, Alright,
- 1:29:09you have to tell someone when a character enters a room you have
- 1:29:13to have it announced, or if there's an important
- 1:29:14Mm-hmm.
- 1:29:14plot element, you have to have it said three times.
- 1:29:18And it's just killing creativity and it's just so
- 1:29:20Yeah.
- 1:29:20annoying, but it is really refreshing to see kind of a creative way to go about it.
- 1:29:26Yeah. They were very much giving me like Ardman Studios,
- 1:29:31like Flushed Away or Wallace and Gromit people.
- 1:29:34Yeah. Mm-hmm.
- 1:29:36I loved them. They were awesome.
- 1:29:38Okay, so are we gonna pass this for the characters?
- 1:29:41Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:29:42I agree.
- 1:29:44Okay. Let's move on to the sensational set design test.
- 1:29:53Does this movie and the set design just blow your mind?
- 1:29:57Did they have iconic filming locations?
- 1:29:59yes, yes, and yes. There wasn't even a third question,
- 1:30:03but yes, yes, and yes. the cave scenes and like most of the interior shots were
- 1:30:09filmed on a soundstage in LA, but they actually went to the Caribbean for this also.
- 1:30:15So they filmed
- 1:30:16Orlando?
- 1:30:18Ha ha ha.
- 1:30:18Orlando,
- 1:30:18yes. Orlando was there.
- 1:30:20Yeah. Blue?
- 1:30:21He was blooming.
- 1:30:23they went to St. Thomas for a lot of the exteriors of the island because
- 1:30:27it was not fully developed over there.
- 1:30:30So there's a lot of like natural island areas.
- 1:30:33and then the island where Jack and Elizabeth are left and stranded,
- 1:30:40the Rum Runners area. ~ it's called Petit Tobac,
- 1:30:44part of the Tobago Kays or Keys.
- 1:30:50It's a popular sailing destination compromising five uninhabited islands.
- 1:30:55With a Finnish sailing crew ~ when a Finnish sailing crew visited
- 1:31:00the island in January of two thousand and three,
- 1:31:02they discovered a pile of debris and burned palm tree leaves,
- 1:31:07and they were not aware that it had been a recent movie shooting scene.
- 1:31:11Mm.
- 1:31:13So they're like, Wow, what's all this crap doing here?
- 1:31:16~ I'm not sure if this counts,
- 1:31:19but Elizabeth picked up the medallion in her dresser and the dust around
- 1:31:25the medallion was so detail oriented.
- 1:31:29It was so good. It was like she hadn't picked it up in years.
- 1:31:31I loved that
- 1:31:32Yeah, I had noticed that. Yeah,
- 1:31:33that was a cool touch.
- 1:31:34a lot. ~ They only shot six days of the film's production on C.
- 1:31:43A at sea, not on sea, sorry.
- 1:31:44Yeah. It's crazy.
- 1:31:47The Black Pearl isn't a real ship,
- 1:31:48by the way.
- 1:31:50Yeah, there's only one real boat and it wasn't the Pearl and the other boats were
- 1:31:54on rigs, also just in the water.
- 1:31:57~ but they had half of the missing ship.
- 1:32:00So it was like dollhouse so they could film the insides a lot better.
- 1:32:04then they patch up holes and gaps in post whenever they were
- 1:32:12using the actual shots of the ship.
- 1:32:15So,
- 1:32:19I think that's all I need to say about the ships.
- 1:32:21The underwater boat scene,
- 1:32:25iconic, will you say? I would say.
- 1:32:27The where they're walking underneath.
- 1:32:28Mythbusters seem to think so.
- 1:32:28Mm-hmm.
- 1:32:30I watched
- 1:32:31that Mythbusters episode a couple w weeks ago,
- 1:32:35not knowing we were gonna do this episode,
- 1:32:35Yeah. I actually Googled
- 1:32:37and
- 1:32:38that. I was like, that's there's no way that's a thing.
- 1:32:40And turns
- 1:32:41It's not a thing.
- 1:32:41Mm-hmm.
- 1:32:42out it is not a thing.
- 1:32:43They busted that one. They b they also busted the the silverware and glass
- 1:32:49in the cannons. That doesn't work as well either,
- 1:32:53so
- 1:32:53~ okay. Okay.
- 1:32:54In a separate
- 1:32:55episode I think they busted the they could both fit on the door in the Titanic.
- 1:33:01Yes.
- 1:33:03that's all I've got. I thought everything was great.
- 1:33:06The locations were amazing. You can't not shoot in the Caribbean and it'd be great.
- 1:33:10So but on top of that, the set design was great.
- 1:33:14They had to create the illusion of three different boats
- 1:33:19Mm. Even
- 1:33:20up close and then
- 1:33:22even the whole town of Port Royal there,
- 1:33:24like that I

- 1:33:36then Johnny Depp also, but yeah.
- 1:33:38Even the blacksmith shop is awesome.
- 1:33:40Yeah. Like going through the town and stuff,
- 1:33:43like us the the pirates are pillaging and burning it down and yeah,
- 1:33:48it was all it was all good.
- 1:33:49My
- 1:33:49I also this
- 1:33:49Yeah.
