- 0:00Speaker 1: Thanks for tuning into the Meat Eater podcast. We're recording
- 0:03Speaker 1: right now out of Bozeman, Montana, specifically out of the
- 0:08Speaker 1: spacious placial rental home of Dan Doughty. Dan has a
- 0:13Speaker 1: lookout tower. We're in his basement. Many floors blow his
- 0:17Speaker 1: lookout power, which looks out over irrigated pasture, chickens, ducks, ducks,
- 0:25Speaker 1: foul um. In the kitchen right now, he's prepping up
- 0:27Speaker 1: some of his homegrown chickens. He uh to everyone who
- 0:32Speaker 1: comes in. He marvels about their size and robustness. Chickens,
- 0:36Speaker 1: huge chickens. This is like a homecoming for me because
- 0:39Speaker 1: years ago I lived at Montana for a long time,
- 0:42Speaker 1: about a decade, and for a short spell I lived
- 0:46Speaker 1: here in Bozeman and we rented. My brother and I
- 0:49Speaker 1: were living in a trailer park. In that trailer park
- 0:52Speaker 1: like inspires certain images in a person's mind. But this
- 0:57Speaker 1: guy own his trailer park. You know, r Have you
- 0:59Speaker 1: guys heard of Rock Creek. He put trailers on his
- 1:04Speaker 1: trailer park at about the same spacing that they put
- 1:07Speaker 1: golf greens on a golf course. I mean, it was
- 1:10Speaker 1: like paradise and it came with private access well to
- 1:16Speaker 1: Rocky Creek. Dude, there was like it was a giant place.
- 1:20Speaker 1: And yeah, I think there's like thirteen trailers on it.
- 1:22Speaker 1: What is it now? Is it still there? I have
- 1:23Speaker 1: no idea. Always want to go. Look the nicest guy.
- 1:25Speaker 1: He drove around on a golf cart. All this dude
- 1:28Speaker 1: did was mole grass and had this creek. We uh
- 1:33Speaker 1: picked ferry ring mushrooms off the property. We would shoot
- 1:36Speaker 1: our bowl in our own little area. He's like, oh,
- 1:39Speaker 1: if you boys really want to have a good place
- 1:40Speaker 1: to shooting, like, we had a little shooting area and
- 1:44Speaker 1: we'd explore that creek with fly rods. But if you
- 1:46Speaker 1: really wanted to get an accurate idea what was going
- 1:48Speaker 1: on there, you'd run a leaf for him through that
- 1:49Speaker 1: thing and turn up a whole other class of fish
- 1:52Speaker 1: out of there. No, it's a great trailer park. It
- 1:55Speaker 1: didn't make any I don't know. I never got into
- 1:58Speaker 1: this guy's books. It made no sense that he was
- 2:01Speaker 1: running it as a trailer park. Where from town is that?
- 2:04Speaker 1: Where is that creek? You know it's at that, it's
- 2:06Speaker 1: right by it's out by the um. What's that good
- 2:09Speaker 1: breakfast place out by the slaughter yard or the sail yard, Stockyard. Yeah,
- 2:14Speaker 1: Rocky Creek. But you know what it was the way
- 2:17Speaker 1: it was, truck's ripping down out of Bozeman Pass, hit
- 2:20Speaker 1: the Jake breaks. They basically not to hit the Jake
- 2:23Speaker 1: breaks at me and Matt's trailer, you know, just like
- 2:27Speaker 1: you got used to it after a while. Um, living there,
- 2:32Speaker 1: I found out why they call him Jake breaks. It's
- 2:34Speaker 1: a compression break made by Jacob Industries in Pennsylvania. Do
- 2:38Speaker 1: you guys already know that? Yeah? Really as dum dump
- 2:43Speaker 1: truck for a number of years when I was a kid.
- 2:45Speaker 1: So you're throwing a Jake breaking past my trailer with
- 2:49Speaker 1: the Jake drove down that hill and I saw your trailer,
- 2:51Speaker 1: I would hit the Jake break like that's ronella. He
- 2:54Speaker 1: gets to Jake. Um, all right, we're not gonna be
- 2:57Speaker 1: talking about trailer parks. Well, we are talking about is
- 3:00Speaker 1: uh the science and lower and bullshit involved with filming art.
- 3:09Speaker 1: The science art, lower and bullshit of filming hunts. And
- 3:12Speaker 1: this is something like I hear about. I hear about
- 3:15Speaker 1: in different ways from from people who ask questions all
- 3:18Speaker 1: the time. They'll ask how do you get into that
- 3:21Speaker 1: line of work? Right? So people will see like there's
- 3:24Speaker 1: a lot of guys out there who are like, man,
- 3:26Speaker 1: you know, I like the film hunts. Why can't Why
- 3:28Speaker 1: don't I film hunts for living? Or is it different hunting?
- 3:32Speaker 1: Like do you miss hunting without cameras? Or people just
- 3:37Speaker 1: having technical questions about film and hunts or um, I
- 3:43Speaker 1: feel like there's other ores. Well, there's a lot. I
- 3:45Speaker 1: mean there's a million questions, and then there's just when
- 3:48Speaker 1: you watch and see that people could do if you're
- 3:53Speaker 1: so inclined to film your hunt for memory's sake or
- 3:55Speaker 1: for whatever things that one should be doing to do
- 3:58Speaker 1: a better job. You know, you see and those articles
- 4:01Speaker 1: about how to take good grip and grins and magazines
- 4:04Speaker 1: you don't see much about like just sort of like
- 4:06Speaker 1: capturing film on hunts, like how to be roll footage
- 4:12Speaker 1: no one talks about. No one ever wrote an article
- 4:13Speaker 1: about that. I think it's interesting. Now, I'd let me
- 4:16Speaker 1: introduce you. Um, I'm here with Media your producer yea
- 4:22Speaker 1: honest you tell us also director and producer Dan Doherty.
- 4:26Speaker 1: These guys are both based here out of Bozeman at
- 4:28Speaker 1: z PC West um Casey Lvier from Hush Hushing or
- 4:34Speaker 1: Hush because he used to be Hushing your your cap
- 4:38Speaker 1: hushes the merch line. Hushing is the the YouTube page
- 4:44Speaker 1: which is hunt slash Fishing Hushing. So be like New
- 4:50Speaker 1: Balance and New Belle a lot like that. So explain
- 4:57Speaker 1: it again. Hushing is the Hushing is your your humongous
- 5:00Speaker 1: YouTube channel. Yeah, I wouldn't say it's humongous, but it's hard.
- 5:03Speaker 1: But just lay lay a couple of credentials out We've got.
- 5:05Speaker 1: It's a big YouTube like you do, like a big
- 5:08Speaker 1: I mean, we do a big, brisk YouTube business. Yeah,
- 5:12Speaker 1: the hunting channel. I run a couple of different YouTube channels.
- 5:15Speaker 1: I have a personal family channel we run that's very successful.
- 5:18Speaker 1: We've got over five hundred thousand subscribers, almost to hit
- 5:21Speaker 1: a hundred million views, and then the hunting channel is
- 5:24Speaker 1: doing really well and it's got what five hunting and fishing,
- 5:29Speaker 1: outdoor cooking, Hushing Hushing subscribers, and then we're almost gonna
- 5:36Speaker 1: hit ten million views, which I mean when I started
- 5:39Speaker 1: this four years ago, my brother was the one that
- 5:41Speaker 1: convinced me to do this because he was doing YouTube
- 5:45Speaker 1: full time back then and he's like, why don't you
- 5:47Speaker 1: make a hunting channel on YouTube? I'm like that is
- 5:50Speaker 1: not the audience that's on YouTube or on the internet really,
- 5:53Speaker 1: So it was a hard game at first, but now
- 5:56Speaker 1: there's it's opening up and other people are starting to
- 5:59Speaker 1: put con hint on there and and I think more
- 6:01Speaker 1: and more hunters and fishermen are knowing that they can
- 6:05Speaker 1: watch stuff on there. So it's done well. So, I mean,
- 6:07Speaker 1: compared to some of the giant YouTube channels, it doesn't
- 6:09Speaker 1: seem like a lot, but for what we're trying to do,
- 6:11Speaker 1: it it's done really well. And uh yeah, we're excited.
- 6:15Speaker 1: Then Chester the Blaster yea, he really drives a van.
- 6:19Speaker 1: I wish I had a van Eric Eric Ester, Eric Chester,
- 6:23Speaker 1: not Chester, not Chester. But everyone wants to make it.
- 6:26Speaker 1: Everyone wants they want to do what I just did.
- 6:29Speaker 1: I could spell it out for him with two s's
- 6:31Speaker 1: and now somehow put a T in there and how
- 6:34Speaker 1: do you what's your affiliation? Well, it's pretty cool. How
- 6:37Speaker 1: Casey and I met. We actually met at the Big
- 6:40Speaker 1: Western and uh Western Hunting and Conservation Expo in Salt
- 6:44Speaker 1: Lake and I was making films and DVDs and some
- 6:49Speaker 1: YouTube films before I met Casey, and he introduced himself
- 6:52Speaker 1: to me, and uh, hunting, films, hunting, DVDs, shed hunting, Um, yeah,
- 6:59Speaker 1: anything we can get there in film. And uh, he
- 7:01Speaker 1: introduced himself to me as a YouTuber and it just
- 7:05Speaker 1: blew me away that he did YouTube videos. I really
- 7:09Speaker 1: didn't understand it. Um. Since then, we've just kind of
- 7:13Speaker 1: pardoned up and did some collaborative hunts together and now
- 7:16Speaker 1: we're working together. Are you still doing DVDs? No, No
- 7:19Speaker 1: more DVDs right now, We're just gonna We're committed to YouTube.
- 7:22Speaker 1: And then that's the direction we're going. It's hard to
- 7:26Speaker 1: sell it DVD these days, and it is. I think
- 7:28Speaker 1: DVD sales are going down. I mean we're still whatever
- 7:33Speaker 1: the out Yeah on the high dude, you want to
- 7:38Speaker 1: know something like like like this sort of apocryphal? Is that?
- 7:42Speaker 1: What was that a word? An apocryphal story? I ever
- 7:45Speaker 1: like to date myself, not to go on dates myself
- 7:48Speaker 1: with to date like my era. When I was born.
- 7:51Speaker 1: I remember being in a class in college at Lake
- 7:55Speaker 1: State University and it would have been nine and I
- 8:00Speaker 1: was in his communications class, okay, and it was like
- 8:04Speaker 1: one of the things you have to do is you
- 8:05Speaker 1: have to make a persuasion speech. Okay. I remember dude
- 8:09Speaker 1: getting up there and saying, man, you should be getting
- 8:12Speaker 1: rid of your tapes because CDs or where it's at,
- 8:17Speaker 1: it's like they don't have the tape, don't break yeah,
- 8:20Speaker 1: and being there man like I don't know, man, there
- 8:23Speaker 1: was a potent argument in favorite CDs, I'm switching. It
- 8:27Speaker 1: seemed like such a risk back then to give up
- 8:29Speaker 1: those those cassettes for this new thing. Right, are you
- 8:33Speaker 1: guys old enough to have had cassettes? Dude? I remember
- 8:36Speaker 1: my I would say I was in fifth grade, but
- 8:38Speaker 1: it might have been like six or seventh. I had
- 8:41Speaker 1: a yellow walkman, and these were like really popular, I
- 8:44Speaker 1: feel like, and you could like put them under the Yeah,
- 8:48Speaker 1: and I had this and yeah it was a cassette
- 8:50Speaker 1: and that I listened to that thing for like three
- 8:53Speaker 1: years like New Kids on the Block, criss Cross. You
- 8:57Speaker 1: guys remember these guys. Yeah, So I'll tell the first
- 9:01Speaker 1: tape I ever own, this is way off such the
- 9:03Speaker 1: first tape everyone was a Ghostbusters soundtrack. Really yeah, Mine
- 9:07Speaker 1: was Aky Breaky Heart. I think I own that same
- 9:11Speaker 1: canseet at one point I might still have it. So
- 9:14Speaker 1: you you self identify as a YouTuber, I do, I
- 9:18Speaker 1: mean so you're like, but when I think of the YouTube, right,
- 9:21Speaker 1: people who do unboxing videos, which I discovered to my kids,
- 9:25Speaker 1: watch a video of someone taking the toy out of
- 9:28Speaker 1: a box, and they'll have millions of you. The biggest
- 9:30Speaker 1: niche in YouTube right now. And there's a channel out there.
- 9:33Speaker 1: I can't remember what it's called, but it's basically a
- 9:35Speaker 1: lady to unboxes Disney toys, plays with him for a second,
- 9:39Speaker 1: never shows her face. It's like an over the shoulder shot.
- 9:42Speaker 1: Plays with these toys. Videos done twenty million views. My
- 9:48Speaker 1: kid man, you like you caught him loose on YouTube,
- 9:50Speaker 1: which I don't like to do because all of a
- 9:51Speaker 1: sudden he's talking about stuff he ran into. But you
- 9:55Speaker 1: caught him loose on YouTube. Would be like, he likes
- 9:57Speaker 1: monster trucks. Yeah, so you play them anster truck video
- 10:01Speaker 1: and the next thing he's watching is someone unboxing monster
- 10:04Speaker 1: truck toys and he just like mouth opened, drool coming out.
- 10:08Speaker 1: It's like that he just is transfixed. And how they
- 10:10Speaker 1: do it where you don't see the person, you just
- 10:12Speaker 1: see the person's hands. Yeah, I'm gonna do unboxing videos
- 10:15Speaker 1: of critters. Yeah, how what's in there? It's five? Yeah?
- 10:22Speaker 1: The thing is with why they're so popular is because
- 10:23Speaker 1: what does a five year old too? He rewatches that
- 10:26Speaker 1: thing a hundred times. Yeah, it's like going back to
- 10:29Speaker 1: the Ghostbusters. I just showed my youngest boy or my
- 10:32Speaker 1: oldest boy the Ghostbusters. We watched the video. He's watched
- 10:35Speaker 1: it ten times since. So they watched this unboxing video
- 10:38Speaker 1: and I'm just gonna watch it one time and move on.
- 10:41Speaker 1: That's how you rack up hits on YouTube. You have it,
- 10:43Speaker 1: so they watch and then it gets into that category
- 10:46Speaker 1: of unboxing. So every video it suggested videos and unboxing
- 10:49Speaker 1: video and they just it's the same channel and just
- 10:51Speaker 1: clicking over and over and over, like wrapped in paper
- 10:54Speaker 1: like a birthday or it's just how it comes to
- 10:56Speaker 1: the store. You'd be like, yeah, but you could go
- 10:59Speaker 1: go you could go watch unboxing videos of a fishing reel.
- 11:02Speaker 1: Going to like going to YouTube and type in unboxing
- 11:06Speaker 1: Chamano stratic and there will be a guy being like,
- 11:08Speaker 1: so I just got the Shamano stratic um. He'll kind
- 11:12Speaker 1: of like show yeah, cost it's open up, will open
- 11:17Speaker 1: it up and okay, so it's in a little cell
- 11:19Speaker 1: phone bag, Um, I get that open it comes to
- 11:23Speaker 1: the extra spool. I kind of I'm liking the quality
- 11:26Speaker 1: of this spool. Let's take a look, or here's the handle. Yeah,
- 11:30Speaker 1: and that's why I like, Yeah, you're like your mind,
- 11:32Speaker 1: You're just like you can't. It's just amazing. Man. And
- 11:35Speaker 1: there's they get manicures, nice manicures. That's that's a big secret.
- 11:40Speaker 1: I think of an unboxing video, I couldn't do it.
- 11:43Speaker 1: I don't have pretty hands. So it's you and the
- 11:45Speaker 1: unboxers and you. When did you start making hunting videos?
- 11:50Speaker 1: I think we up. I uploaded the very first hunting
- 11:53Speaker 1: video like four years ago, like four years ago, January.
- 11:59Speaker 1: What was it it was? I don't talk about those
- 12:02Speaker 1: first videos, Steve, No, it was. It was the very
- 12:06Speaker 1: first video I ever put up. Was a UH reel
- 12:09Speaker 1: of that season that I was getting ready to upload.
- 12:12Speaker 1: So it was like the thirty second highlight of the
- 12:14Speaker 1: five hunts I filmed. So the first film I put
- 12:18Speaker 1: up was I think my brother's elk hunt um and Uh.
- 12:23Speaker 1: It was a good film. No, it was terrible, but
- 12:26Speaker 1: it was like thirty minutes long and it was mostly
- 12:29Speaker 1: me and my brother sitting in our little UH studio
- 12:32Speaker 1: office in California talking about this Hunt, showing some clips
- 12:36Speaker 1: of The Hunt basically, and uh it, I mean it
- 12:40Speaker 1: still gets views. It's probably been viewed two thousand times.
- 12:43Speaker 1: But I watched. But it's good. Like I tell people
- 12:45Speaker 1: that those first couple of films are kind of embarrassing
- 12:48Speaker 1: because I'm just like, what was I doing? But it's
- 12:50Speaker 1: good to watch because then I can see how far
- 12:52Speaker 1: we've came. So but totally stilf taught. Oh yeah, I mean,
- 12:56Speaker 1: if you want to talk about like going blast blast
- 12:59Speaker 1: from the past. I learned how to film and edit
- 13:01Speaker 1: videos when I was in high school because I was
- 13:03Speaker 1: trying to become a professional snowboard I was writing for
- 13:06Speaker 1: a company in Salt Lake, and I was trying to
- 13:08Speaker 1: get the bigger sponsors on and so I'd go out
- 13:10Speaker 1: with my mom's VHS, I mean five pounds camera, shoot
- 13:15Speaker 1: video of me snowboarding, go, and I'd cut from VCR
- 13:19Speaker 1: to VCR and I spent hours doing this for like
- 13:22Speaker 1: this three minute clip. And then I'd send all these
- 13:24Speaker 1: v vhs is out to these snowboard companies like hey,
- 13:27Speaker 1: sponsor me, you know. So that was my like initial
- 13:30Speaker 1: approach into filming myself. But um, then I started filming
- 13:35Speaker 1: hunting and stuff later. But yeah, like self taught pretty
- 13:40Speaker 1: much like on all the new edending software and all
- 13:42Speaker 1: the new HD cameras and all that stuff. I think
- 13:44Speaker 1: it's worth mentioning. I think that's when we aired Mediator
- 13:47Speaker 1: the first time four years ago in January, right, the
- 13:50Speaker 1: same length of life here. Yeah, I can't turn a
- 13:54Speaker 1: camera on. I honestly, I'll see camera like beeping and
- 14:00Speaker 1: I'll be like, oh, you know, almost to running out
- 14:01Speaker 1: of battery. I just come find someone. I'm like, hey, man,
- 14:04Speaker 1: there's needs to be a problem out there with one
- 14:06Speaker 1: of the campus that sounds wrong. I can't figure it out.
- 14:11Speaker 1: It's making noise. Yeah, so we Yeah, so we started
- 14:14Speaker 1: doing hunts. Like the first hunt I ever filmed was
- 14:20Speaker 1: two that pow. Yeah, I started doing I think it
- 14:25Speaker 1: was in two thousand two nine. But it was like
- 14:29Speaker 1: a whole different deal because it wasn't like the self
- 14:31Speaker 1: taught thing was rolling in with like some professional mugs.
- 14:33Speaker 1: But I wasn't filming see, like, I don't comfort perspective.
- 14:36Speaker 1: That's why I'm glad Dan and the host are here,
- 14:38Speaker 1: because like talking about film and hunts, I don't really know,
- 14:41Speaker 1: you know what I mean. I can't even speak to it.
- 14:44Speaker 1: But I have a lot of things about I have
- 14:48Speaker 1: a lot of feelings that I'd be curious to get
- 14:49Speaker 1: your take on it. The way the way filming it um.
- 14:58Speaker 1: In some way, I want to say it bad asteridizes it,
- 15:01Speaker 1: but in some ways that kind of glory like makes
- 15:04Speaker 1: it better. You know, no, just to be capturing it,
- 15:10Speaker 1: because I often get hung up on sort of the
- 15:13Speaker 1: big idea of why, like why film it? Like what's wrong?
- 15:19Speaker 1: Stuff is being in your head? No, I agree, do
- 15:21Speaker 1: different wonder about it? Yeah? Like then, but but I'm
- 15:25Speaker 1: almost shamed to admit I have a ton of fun,
- 15:27Speaker 1: Like in some ways it's more fun to go out
- 15:29Speaker 1: and film it. Yeah, I mean there's I guess there's
- 15:31Speaker 1: two ways to look at it, Like I do the
- 15:33Speaker 1: hunting thing. But we also, like I was talking about earlier,
- 15:35Speaker 1: we have this family channel wher I vlog is like
- 15:38Speaker 1: a video log diary of our daily life. And I
- 15:42Speaker 1: don't VIEO tape every day, but five to six days
- 15:45Speaker 1: a week I uploading video to YouTube of me and
- 15:47Speaker 1: my wife and our kids hanging out doing living our life.
- 15:50Speaker 1: It sounds crazy, I know, but and I love having
- 15:53Speaker 1: those moments I love going back and being like, look
- 15:55Speaker 1: at when you were three. You know, because we've been
- 15:57Speaker 1: doing it for four and a half five years. But
- 15:59Speaker 1: there are certain times and certain things and moments that
- 16:02Speaker 1: happened that I go to take out the camera, said no, this,
- 16:06Speaker 1: this just needs to be in my head. It doesn't
- 16:08Speaker 1: need to be shared with anybody else. You did, like
- 16:10Speaker 1: upload your children passing through the birth canal? No, but
- 16:13Speaker 1: pretty close. I mean my wife wouldn't allow that, obviously,
- 16:16Speaker 1: but she had a c section the last baby, and
- 16:18Speaker 1: that's the only one I really filmed, and like upload, dude,
- 16:24Speaker 1: my wife like, we got to a point now, Dan,
- 16:27Speaker 1: your couche has falling apart. Oh no, we got two
- 16:30Speaker 1: points now. My wife won't even let me put pictures
- 16:32Speaker 1: of my kids online. I was gonna ask you about that. Yeah,
- 16:35Speaker 1: we decided that no filming kids. I don't even want
- 16:39Speaker 1: kids on my show. Yeah, no filming kids. I don't
- 16:42Speaker 1: put my kids anywhere. And I'll put pictures of my
- 16:44Speaker 1: kids up. I can put pictures in the back of
- 16:45Speaker 1: their heads up. But in my mind, I just gotten
- 16:49Speaker 1: to be where it's like that's something that they need
- 16:53Speaker 1: to decide for themselves. Yeah, it's a big thing. It's
- 16:57Speaker 1: not just private, right, So it's like, later on, are
- 17:00Speaker 1: you gonna be glad that someone exploited is a strong word.
- 17:04Speaker 1: And I can say this because I did it, Like
- 17:05Speaker 1: I put my kid on tv UM later on and
- 17:09Speaker 1: be like, are you gonna be glad that someone took
- 17:13Speaker 1: the liberty of broadcasting your life for public consumption before
- 17:18Speaker 1: the age of consent? Yeah? I mean, so it's like
- 17:21Speaker 1: it's in a little way, I just feel like it
- 17:23Speaker 1: started to feel to me like very exploited him and
- 17:25Speaker 1: not just that dangerous dangerous and exploited him. I thought,
- 17:29Speaker 1: you know, i'd be curious to hear your take on it.
- 17:31Speaker 1: Now I I have. That's like the one of the
- 17:34Speaker 1: biggest concerns people always ask us is like, do you
- 17:37Speaker 1: really want your kids out there? Like or do they
- 17:40Speaker 1: do they later want to be out there? Yeah, I mean,
- 17:43Speaker 1: who knows what they're gonna want to do, you know,
- 17:45Speaker 1: ten years from now, Like maybe they're gonna come back
- 17:47Speaker 1: and be like dad, like why did you do that?
- 17:49Speaker 1: But it's always very clear with with me and my
- 17:54Speaker 1: wife that if they don't want to be on film,
- 17:56Speaker 1: they will not be on film. But they too little
- 17:58Speaker 1: to know are you ask my kids what do you
- 18:00Speaker 1: want to eat? What do you tell you wants to eat?
- 18:03Speaker 1: Mac and cheese? So that's what he wants to eat. Yeah,
- 18:12Speaker 1: So I mean, and that's my My last name is
- 18:15Speaker 1: actually Butler, but when we started the channel, I didn't
- 18:17Speaker 1: want my information out there, so I used my middle name.
- 18:22Speaker 1: And now all the information about me is out there. Yeah,
- 18:26Speaker 1: but I don't know, like I get there. I've heard
- 18:29Speaker 1: some weird stories I've had, like, uh, big bloggers tell
- 18:32Speaker 1: me crazy stories about their kids and pictures and stuff
- 18:35Speaker 1: end up in the wrong places, and I mean, yeah,
- 18:39Speaker 1: it frightens me. But I mean you really can't get
- 18:44Speaker 1: on any social media platform Facebook, Twitter or anything and
- 18:47Speaker 1: post any pictures then really nobody can. It's not like
- 18:50Speaker 1: I don't feel like they target us because what we
- 18:52Speaker 1: do they just find whoever. And I don't understand it all.
- 18:57Speaker 1: And uh, but here's another way to look at it,
- 19:00Speaker 1: because I've had this conversation with my brother. He has
- 19:01Speaker 1: five kids. I have three kids. We talked about this
- 19:03Speaker 1: all the time, like we all like me, my brother,
- 19:07Speaker 1: my two brothers, my sister, my wife, his wife, like
- 19:10Speaker 1: we all make YouTube videos for a living. It's like
- 19:12Speaker 1: the family business now, and it is this is a
- 19:17Speaker 1: little bit out there, far fetched. But if you grew
- 19:20Speaker 1: up on a dairy farm and you didn't want to
- 19:23Speaker 1: be a dairy farmer, is your dad doing to still
- 19:25Speaker 1: make you go out and milk cows? It's a family business,
- 19:29Speaker 1: like it's kind of way I look at it, but
- 19:31Speaker 1: it kind of not because it is. Maybe later on
- 19:33Speaker 1: in life my kids are gonna be like dad, I
- 19:35Speaker 1: didn't want you to record my first trade, you know, graduation. Yeah,
- 19:42Speaker 1: But I mean that's a good point. Family business, that's
- 19:45Speaker 1: what we do for a living. If I didn't see
- 19:47Speaker 1: all if I didn't see all sides of I would
- 19:48Speaker 1: have brought it up. If I was just like I
- 19:50Speaker 1: knew I was right and I was super confident in
- 19:52Speaker 1: being right. I have never brought it up. I don't
- 19:54Speaker 1: know the answer to it. Don't either. But the thing
- 19:56Speaker 1: about this isn't why I brought up. I'm gonna do
- 19:59Speaker 1: a seamless segue. I feel the same way. Sometimes part
- 20:04Speaker 1: of me feels the same way about hunting that I
- 20:08Speaker 1: do about kids. Is it like the exploitation of something
- 20:12Speaker 1: so beautiful filming it? And sometimes I feel like um,
- 20:19Speaker 1: like it's a deal with the devil. I don't understand
- 20:23Speaker 1: why I deal with the devil because I just feel
- 20:26Speaker 1: like this happened. No farther, let's say a quick break
- 20:32Speaker 1: they hear from our sponsors will be right back. I'll
- 20:34Speaker 1: just talk about that. Filming hunts sometimes feels as though,
- 20:40Speaker 1: um that that at the risk of sounding spiritual, No not,
- 20:46Speaker 1: let me no, not not at the risk of sounding spiritual.
- 20:49Speaker 1: That there's sort of this thing like in the natural world,
- 20:52Speaker 1: you're sort of being gifted glimpses into some things, you know,
- 20:58Speaker 1: and it's yields private or it feels like, um, like
- 21:03Speaker 1: you paid some level of dudes to be there and
- 21:05Speaker 1: see these things happen, and then to see it and
- 21:08Speaker 1: then to capture or to interrupt that moment in order
- 21:12Speaker 1: to make an accounting of it. Starts to feel like, well, why, like,
- 21:18Speaker 1: is it not just good enough that it just happened?
- 21:20Speaker 1: Does it really have to happen that way? And I've
- 21:22Speaker 1: gotten to the point where something amazing will happen, what's
- 21:24Speaker 1: the first thing out of my mouth? Did you get that?
- 21:28Speaker 1: It's like it wasn't you know what I mean. It's
- 21:30Speaker 1: like it makes you sort of reset expectations in some way.
- 21:34Speaker 1: But also I think good things come of it, you
- 21:36Speaker 1: know what I mean. I think that you're like to
- 21:38Speaker 1: introduce people to certain worlds. You're like inspiring people and
- 21:42Speaker 1: you just have to make a record. You know. The
- 21:44Speaker 1: oldest representational art we know about is dudes doing depictions
- 21:50Speaker 1: of their hunt on cave walls. People for a long
- 21:53Speaker 1: time have been saying, like I did, and I will
- 21:56Speaker 1: now record. You know, does it feel different to you
- 21:59Speaker 1: than writing about Hunt? Yeah? For some reason. Yeah, it's
- 22:03Speaker 1: more intrusive, more more intrusive. I agree with that, Like
- 22:08Speaker 1: there are some things I think that should be experienced
- 22:11Speaker 1: and should just be uploaded into your brain. And that's it.
- 22:16Speaker 1: We were talking about one on the way here, like
- 22:18Speaker 1: the cell count we did last year. He filmed it.
- 22:20Speaker 1: I shot this really nice bowl and he got it
- 22:22Speaker 1: all on on film. But there's this one moment, like
- 22:24Speaker 1: the very first time I saw the bowl coming through
- 22:26Speaker 1: the trees, and we had got none of it captured.
- 22:29Speaker 1: But that's something that's it feels like it is captured
- 22:31Speaker 1: because I I replay that all the time and that's
- 22:34Speaker 1: like my moment, you know, like that was like my
- 22:36Speaker 1: thing that only I experienced, And that's pretty pretty rat
- 22:39Speaker 1: but like what you were going after, like with it
- 22:42Speaker 1: does good things. And you've said it before, like the
- 22:45Speaker 1: you feel like your shows the hr of of hunting right,
- 22:48Speaker 1: Like it really shows a lot of people that other
- 22:52Speaker 1: world words wouldn't have watched hunting what it really happens.
- 22:55Speaker 1: And that's probably the coolest thing that we see on
- 22:57Speaker 1: on our YouTube channels because we have such a big
- 23:00Speaker 1: audience that aren't necessarily hunters. There were anti hunters, they
- 23:04Speaker 1: were vegetarians or vegans, you know, they're the people against it,
- 23:08Speaker 1: and then they really watch what what a hunt really
- 23:10Speaker 1: requires and what it takes. It's not just a bunch
- 23:12Speaker 1: of deers jumping in the truck with the case of beer,
- 23:15Speaker 1: driving out, killing everything you see and going home. But
- 23:18Speaker 1: we respect these animals and we consume these animals and
- 23:21Speaker 1: and so yeah, it is tough sometimes thinking that you
- 23:25Speaker 1: exploit those animals for what you do. But I think
- 23:27Speaker 1: in the long run, uh, what the meat Eater shows done, um,
- 23:31Speaker 1: I feel like we've done the same on YouTube. It
- 23:33Speaker 1: really opens the eyes to the people that might not
- 23:36Speaker 1: have understood what we did before. And I think that's
- 23:39Speaker 1: the biggest problem with people that don't agree with what
- 23:41Speaker 1: we do is they're just not educated on it or
- 23:44Speaker 1: got or do in fact know about something that happened,
- 23:49Speaker 1: but they know about an anomalous thing that happens, you know,
- 23:54Speaker 1: like that one day, like they live in a suburban
- 23:56Speaker 1: one day a deer comes a rounding their yard with
- 23:58Speaker 1: the arrow hanging out of it, arrow stuck in its
- 23:59Speaker 1: like kind they're like, oh, so that's what that's all about. Yeah,
- 24:02Speaker 1: you know, no one ever shows up those moments though,
- 24:06Speaker 1: when when you think may should you know, should only
- 24:09Speaker 1: be for yourself? When we do film them and say
- 24:12Speaker 1: I'm shooting you and I you know, capture you experiencing that,
- 24:16Speaker 1: Like there's there's an I think there's like a next
- 24:18Speaker 1: level of I don't know, just I guess context, but
- 24:22Speaker 1: possibly beauty too, to see someone having an emotional or
- 24:26Speaker 1: experiential thing happened. Like remember when we shot Joe Rogan
- 24:30Speaker 1: shoot his first year, there's that moment that that MO
- 24:32Speaker 1: captured there that is you know, not that it's greater
- 24:36Speaker 1: than his experience, of course it's not, but there's something
- 24:38Speaker 1: really powerful there and you know we're looking for that.
- 24:42Speaker 1: I mean, that's what Johannis and I are looking for
- 24:44Speaker 1: as much as possible. Is that real experience. But you
- 24:48Speaker 1: know it's interesting because you know, you're not the writer
- 24:50Speaker 1: in that case. In that case, the producer of the
- 24:52Speaker 1: shooter is the writer and you're the subject. And um, yeah,
- 24:56Speaker 1: I mean that's what we go for. So it's it's
- 24:59Speaker 1: I mean, I don't think it is exploitative necessarily animal.
- 25:02Speaker 1: I think it's also can be incredibly respectful specifically towards
- 25:06Speaker 1: that situation for sure. Man Like yeah, just to render
- 25:09Speaker 1: it and I think that, you know, I guess it's
- 25:12Speaker 1: it's some little thing where wildlife art, wildlife photography always
- 25:16Speaker 1: feels celebratory of the animal, you know what I mean?
- 25:19Speaker 1: And I think you can get to that as well.
- 25:21Speaker 1: I don't want to just talk about this because I
- 25:22Speaker 1: want to talk aboutther stuff. When you guys just like
- 25:25Speaker 1: from a technical standpoint, capturing a hunt on film, now
- 25:27Speaker 1: that we've gotten into like why do guy want to? Right?
- 25:30Speaker 1: Or should you want to or whatever? What do you
- 25:33Speaker 1: think like from your guy's perspective, all having had tons
- 25:36Speaker 1: of experience doing this, Dan, you don't know, produce sixty
- 25:39Speaker 1: episodes of meter been on, so that many hunts film
- 25:43Speaker 1: that many hunts are more more actually Um, when you
- 25:47Speaker 1: guys watch let's just say you're on YouTube and you're
- 25:51Speaker 1: watching hunt videos the guys have made what's the what
- 25:56Speaker 1: do you feel is that could be technical content whatever?
- 26:00Speaker 1: What do you feel is like the thing that guys
- 26:01Speaker 1: most often do wrong? Or like what are some things
- 26:04Speaker 1: that you're gonna offer up answer this question anyway? See fit?
- 26:07Speaker 1: But like what do they do wrong? What could people
- 26:10Speaker 1: do different? They would improve their stuff everything. It's very
- 26:17Speaker 1: easy to watch somebody else's content and and critique it right,
- 26:21Speaker 1: Like you can say I was right to me. For me,
- 26:27Speaker 1: I like like those moments you're talking about. I like
- 26:30Speaker 1: the realness of the hunt and like capturing, uh, the
- 26:34Speaker 1: emotion behind it, and like I caught one of his
- 26:37Speaker 1: moments when he killed that his very first like big
- 26:39Speaker 1: bowl on rifle and the emotion. It was twenty seconds
- 26:44Speaker 1: of you know, of his raw emotion and it made
- 26:47Speaker 1: the whole film like it made the for the three
- 26:49Speaker 1: days we filmed. Like, um, I think the biggest thing
- 26:51Speaker 1: that I see in like YouTube or TV is anything
- 26:56Speaker 1: that's not real. It's staged and you can see right
- 26:59Speaker 1: through it. And there's so much content out there just
- 27:02Speaker 1: staged hunts where they go and kill something and then
- 27:05Speaker 1: they'll go back and reshoot whatever. Yeah, the responses. Yeah,
- 27:10Speaker 1: another thing you see a lot of that makes um
- 27:13Speaker 1: that that it is difficult to watch. It's just the
- 27:16Speaker 1: standard way of setting it up of be like, Hi,
- 27:20Speaker 1: I'm here with Bob and we're on Bob's beautiful place
- 27:26Speaker 1: and we're gonna that's a difficult thing to get around.
- 27:30Speaker 1: You know, it's difficult. There's an economy, like staging stuff
- 27:34Speaker 1: is economical. I mean it's like easy and quick. When
- 27:38Speaker 1: we started out when we used to do like we're
- 27:40Speaker 1: just particularly doing while then as you'd always do these
- 27:43Speaker 1: like you have two people have to meet, right, you're
- 27:45Speaker 1: going to meet someone, but you don't film the meeting
- 27:51Speaker 1: right because it's chaotic, So later you gotta do like
- 27:54Speaker 1: so you walk up and shake their hands. And I
- 27:57Speaker 1: still see that TV now we're like it'll be a
- 28:00Speaker 1: really like one of those real estate shows and there'll
- 28:03Speaker 1: be a shot where a guy's walking up to a
- 28:05Speaker 1: door and there's a shot on the inside of the
- 28:08Speaker 1: person hearing the knock, and then they opened the door
- 28:11Speaker 1: and meet, and they don't meet like how people meet.
- 28:14Speaker 1: You know, they're meeting in the way they meet on TV,
- 28:19Speaker 1: which isn't how that interaction goes down. We used to
- 28:22Speaker 1: do those all the time, Yeah, because like, how is
- 28:26Speaker 1: she gonna get into it? Yeah? The key we realized
- 28:30Speaker 1: is to get into it with v O and b rolled.
- 28:36Speaker 1: I hooked up with Doug right dog like doing some
- 28:41Speaker 1: Doug type activity and just take for granted. People realize
- 28:45Speaker 1: there must have been that moment when you shook hands
- 28:48Speaker 1: that we're not when the door opened from the Yeah,
- 28:51Speaker 1: but they were not seeing and it's like to see it.
- 28:54Speaker 1: It's like a relief to me to not have those
- 28:57Speaker 1: anguished so in I always like, if you're doing stuff,
- 29:01Speaker 1: if something makes you feel so awkward and self conscious,
- 29:05Speaker 1: try to find another way of doing it, because everyone's
- 29:10Speaker 1: gonna feel awkward and self conscious. There's probably people out
- 29:12Speaker 1: there who could knock on the door and do like
- 29:14Speaker 1: a meat and it just feels great. Dan used to
- 29:17Speaker 1: be into a fishing show, which one Oh yeah, he
- 29:20Speaker 1: was good at it. He was amazing. What was that
- 29:22Speaker 1: calling him? All man? Do you know what I'm talking?
- 29:24Speaker 1: He's a wrestler. Anybody's seen this. He's a Canadian wrestlers redhead.
- 29:29Speaker 1: He would extreme fishing and he'd like It was a
- 29:33Speaker 1: great showman. He was entertaining. He was so easy in
- 29:36Speaker 1: his own skin though that he could do those because
- 29:39Speaker 1: he's a professional. I mean he was a performer, you know,
- 29:42Speaker 1: he was an actor. He was a performer. He knew
- 29:44Speaker 1: how to do that. But no, I mean he could
- 29:45Speaker 1: walk into a bar and do like a fake meat
- 29:47Speaker 1: in the bar and it was fun, Like he hit
- 29:49Speaker 1: a whole fresh joke. Was it just like his name?
- 29:51Speaker 1: It was like Billie Damn was the only guy watched it.
- 29:56Speaker 1: I thought I thought it would have beat the Super
- 29:58Speaker 1: Bowl for in ratings. It was on It was not
- 30:01Speaker 1: Discovery or something for a while or Natio. It was
- 30:03Speaker 1: on Nato. I'm really interested though that dude to carry
- 30:07Speaker 1: your program. Man, I'll look it up sometimes during this
- 30:11Speaker 1: and bring it back up. But I want to say that, like,
- 30:13Speaker 1: I think the two main things people can do, and
- 30:16Speaker 1: they're huge, and I don't know that people can do
- 30:18Speaker 1: them easily. But number one has learned how to tell
- 30:21Speaker 1: a story in a basic sense, and that means that
- 30:23Speaker 1: there's a beginning, of middle, and end and that it
- 30:26Speaker 1: shows an arc of what happens. And I don't think
- 30:28Speaker 1: that hunting videos do that very well. Uh, historically they
- 30:34Speaker 1: don't do that. And you know, it's been our focus
- 30:36Speaker 1: since the very beginning, you know, ZPZ. We've had a
- 30:39Speaker 1: you know, a crack team of storytellers being very very
- 30:42Speaker 1: specific about how to craft are our stories from beginning
- 30:46Speaker 1: to middle and end and how they work. And we
- 30:48Speaker 1: put a lot of time. Now Janice puts, you know,
- 30:50Speaker 1: weeks into episodes before we go going, before we go
- 30:53Speaker 1: out there with a plan, and then uh, monitoring that
- 30:57Speaker 1: story while it's happening, and then and they edit process afterwards.
- 31:01Speaker 1: It is a massive amount of work, a massive amount
- 31:03Speaker 1: of people and energy that goes into really defining that
- 31:08Speaker 1: story and making it entertaining, keep you moving all the
- 31:10Speaker 1: way through it. And uh, that's huge. I mean, I
- 31:13Speaker 1: think that's probably number one. And the second major thing
- 31:17Speaker 1: for for making hunting videos better would be too just
- 31:22Speaker 1: learn the basics of framing, the basics of your gear,
- 31:26Speaker 1: and the basics of of shooting, um like blocking, so
- 31:31Speaker 1: you know, a combination knowing how to cut from a
- 31:35Speaker 1: close up of Casey's face to a wide shot that
- 31:38Speaker 1: shows what he's doing with the context of where he's going.
- 31:41Speaker 1: And there's there's a million things to consider, but probably
- 31:44Speaker 1: the best way to learn it is to be in
- 31:46Speaker 1: the edit room and actually put something together, because then
- 31:49Speaker 1: once you go out there, you know what the heck
- 31:51Speaker 1: you're looking for to start with. Pieces together, you realized
- 31:55Speaker 1: stuff you wish you had totally and how to shoot that. Yeah,
- 31:59Speaker 1: he's specifically know how to shoot that exact thing. You'll
- 32:02Speaker 1: know what you need. Like Nick Brigden's the creative director ZPC,
- 32:06Speaker 1: and he gave me a lot of my starting moded.
- 32:09Speaker 1: But that's what makes his particular magic and everybody talks
- 32:13Speaker 1: about it because he shoots what he addits, you know,
- 32:16Speaker 1: and so when he's when he's out on the field
- 32:18Speaker 1: or if we're in the field of somebody who knows
- 32:20Speaker 1: how to shoot for the edit, it's all up in
- 32:24Speaker 1: their head, you know. They just they know what they're
- 32:26Speaker 1: gonna get. When they get it, they get that feeling
- 32:27Speaker 1: it's done, and then you just move on and it's
- 32:30Speaker 1: just like, uh, you know, checking off boxes all the
- 32:33Speaker 1: I want to speak to the story thing real quick,
- 32:35Speaker 1: because um, it's hard to even define what story is.
- 32:40Speaker 1: But one way you might get into a story is
- 32:43Speaker 1: in the most basic element a story is something changes,
- 32:47Speaker 1: you know what I mean, Like something changes. Um, we
- 32:52Speaker 1: work like at media, we were with a lot of
- 32:55Speaker 1: people who a lot of people, the majority people did
- 32:58Speaker 1: not come out of hunting. They came out of storytelling, right,
- 33:00Speaker 1: They came out of film writing various things. So they're
- 33:03Speaker 1: they're their first and foremost love is telling stories. It's
- 33:07Speaker 1: just this is a variety of story. But that's what
- 33:09Speaker 1: it is. It wasn't like they love the film hunts,
- 33:11Speaker 1: but they wanted to learn how to make that in
- 33:13Speaker 1: the story, so they already got that part down. Another
- 33:16Speaker 1: thing is I think that what we found is maintaining
- 33:19Speaker 1: a certain amount of flexibility about what the story is.
- 33:24Speaker 1: Because Dan alluded to the pre production process for yas
- 33:27Speaker 1: might spend a much time on like a story. Oftentimes
- 33:32Speaker 1: you'll be mid stream and realize that it's just not
- 33:35Speaker 1: there and or something different is going on, and you're
- 33:39Speaker 1: sort of making these game time decisions, Um, do we
- 33:43Speaker 1: follow the story? Sometimes the story is hard because, like
- 33:46Speaker 1: I always make a joke about what's production and what's content.
- 33:49Speaker 1: Sometimes you're in a story that feels very production. You
- 33:54Speaker 1: know what it feels like the story Like let's say
- 33:57Speaker 1: you're going on a hunt and all of sudden you
- 33:59Speaker 1: can't go where you want to go. I'll be like, man,
- 34:02Speaker 1: this is like a what I would call a production issue.
- 34:04Speaker 1: This is like in the way of us doing this.
- 34:07Speaker 1: But you realize that sometimes out of that comes a
- 34:10Speaker 1: sort of you know, another story or an actual story
- 34:15Speaker 1: that would be a narrative that you would tell. A
- 34:17Speaker 1: different example, be like you can't film at night. Okay,
- 34:21Speaker 1: so you can't sider or it's hard to film at night.
- 34:23Speaker 1: Let's say you're feeling under your spear fishing underwater at night.
- 34:26Speaker 1: Let's just say that it would be very difficult to
- 34:28Speaker 1: light that and do that. That's a production thing, right,
- 34:31Speaker 1: It's like, it's hard to film at night. So oftentimes
- 34:34Speaker 1: I find the main thing you're thinking about is you
- 34:37Speaker 1: get lost in what it requires to make a story
- 34:40Speaker 1: and you start missing sort of the story that you
- 34:42Speaker 1: would be experiencing in the absence of filming. No. No,
- 34:46Speaker 1: it's like that's going to Bolivia to film our shows
- 34:48Speaker 1: and realizing that it rained for dirty days and then
- 34:51Speaker 1: you couldn't catch any fish, which is so you have
- 34:54Speaker 1: this production but it was But you're right, there's this
- 34:59Speaker 1: interesting moment when you know you deviate from what you
- 35:02Speaker 1: want the story to be to to having to reckon
- 35:05Speaker 1: with what's actually happening. And I think hunting is an
- 35:08Speaker 1: incredible stage to learn storytelling in that dynamic way because
- 35:12Speaker 1: you can't predict anything. Yeah, you can't to an extent.
- 35:16Speaker 1: You're always having to shift your your focus at every point.
- 35:20Speaker 1: I mean, whether it's just the light or the weather,
- 35:22Speaker 1: or the animals aren't doing whatever. You know, you're sort
- 35:24Speaker 1: of you're intending for something to happen, and then it's
- 35:28Speaker 1: not gonna happen most likely, Yeah, it's I think I
- 35:31Speaker 1: think it would be tough to try to set up
- 35:34Speaker 1: a story before you actually go out on the hunt.
- 35:36Speaker 1: I mean, typically you go out, you meet the landowner
- 35:39Speaker 1: with that really awkward handshake, go hunt, kill an animal,
- 35:42Speaker 1: buttri it you're done right. But so many times in Honey,
- 35:45Speaker 1: it just goes wherever it wants to, Like your adventure
- 35:49Speaker 1: leads you somewhere different. And I don't know, like going
- 35:52Speaker 1: back to what you're talking about like cutting, editing and video,
- 35:56Speaker 1: you know, shooting, I don't think you can be a
- 35:58Speaker 1: good cameraman until you actually start editing that footage and
- 36:02Speaker 1: then you learn what you made, where you made your mistakes.
- 36:05Speaker 1: It certain yeah, Like my wife just started. She has
- 36:08Speaker 1: a big craft show on YouTube, and she just started
- 36:11Speaker 1: cutting her own videos where and she started shooting her
- 36:14Speaker 1: own videos and she was craft like making crafts, hair tutorials, recipes,
- 36:21Speaker 1: mom show basically. Um, but you guys really are deep.
- 36:26Speaker 1: We are. Yeah, we're drowning in YouTube. But it's it's
- 36:29Speaker 1: been great. I mean, what's hugely successful. Yeah, it does well,
- 36:33Speaker 1: and it's allowed us to be with our kids. Like
- 36:36Speaker 1: before we before this YouTube world, I was like, blue collar,
- 36:39Speaker 1: does it come? I worked at the steel mills, she
- 36:40Speaker 1: cut hair, like we were working fifty sixty hours a
- 36:43Speaker 1: week and now and that this is going back when
- 36:45Speaker 1: we were talking about earlier. But now we do YouTube
- 36:48Speaker 1: and it allows us to do everything with our kids.
- 36:51Speaker 1: And so it's like I tell my kids like sometimes
- 36:53Speaker 1: like I'm trying to cut the next hushing video at
- 36:55Speaker 1: seven o'clock at night to get it ready for the
- 36:57Speaker 1: next day, and they're like, yeah, let's go to this.
- 36:58Speaker 1: I'm like, I'm sorry, I'm working right now, and you know,
- 37:01Speaker 1: they get bummed out. I'm like, remember before when I
- 37:03Speaker 1: worked at the steel mill and I was gone sixty
- 37:05Speaker 1: hours a week, Like this is like our like this
- 37:07Speaker 1: is me at the office here for two hours and
- 37:10Speaker 1: later when they claim when they come to complain about
- 37:13Speaker 1: what you wouldn't even have been there. Yeah, if it
- 37:17Speaker 1: wasn't for YouTube. Yeah, so I than gone, yeah, cutting
- 37:22Speaker 1: my fingers off and burning my own yeah. But um yeah.
- 37:27Speaker 1: So she's starting to shoot her own videos and stuff
- 37:29Speaker 1: at home so she doesn't have to fly out to
- 37:30Speaker 1: l A as much. And she's like, I don't know
- 37:33Speaker 1: if the lightnings right, I don't know if I'm talking.
- 37:34Speaker 1: I'm like, just shoot something for twenty minutes, shooting for
- 37:38Speaker 1: like how you want it, and go and cut it
- 37:40Speaker 1: and then you'll know. So now she loves it. She
- 37:43Speaker 1: cuts her videos and now she knows how to shoot them,
- 37:45Speaker 1: and like that's the thing with us, is we shooting
- 37:48Speaker 1: at it all of our own stuff, and so like beforehand,
- 37:50Speaker 1: like while I'm shooting him hunting, I'm thinking about how
- 37:53Speaker 1: I'm gonna cut that video, like, oh, this is gonna
- 37:55Speaker 1: be here. Oh first rule podcast was off. Thank you
- 38:05Speaker 1: very much for libration, but yeah that extra vibration. So yeah,
- 38:11Speaker 1: we I mean, when I'm shooting a video for for YouTube,
- 38:15Speaker 1: I'm thinking about while I'm shooting, like how I'm gonna
- 38:17Speaker 1: cut it and how I'm gonna tell that story. But
- 38:20Speaker 1: and you tell the stories pretty efficiently, because you don't.
- 38:23Speaker 1: We work in a twenty like a half hour show,
- 38:25Speaker 1: twenty two minutes. We were in a twenty two minute world.
- 38:28Speaker 1: And now not only that, but we think about it. Um,
- 38:31Speaker 1: we tend to think about an AX yeah, segment or
- 38:35Speaker 1: like first act and there's the there they're they're they're
- 38:37Speaker 1: different lengths. So we we talked about cold open, act one,
- 38:39Speaker 1: act two x three x four, right, and um, but
- 38:42Speaker 1: it's a twenty two minute product. You're dealing with something
- 38:45Speaker 1: like what have you found to be the sweet spot?
- 38:47Speaker 1: I don't know. We're just talking about this earlier. Yeah,
- 38:49Speaker 1: it's kind of funny. Some take off and some don't.
- 38:52Speaker 1: But like, I have a video up there right now
- 38:54Speaker 1: that's twenty three twenty four minutes, which I would consider
- 38:57Speaker 1: to be a long YouTube. That's all long YouTube video.
- 39:01Speaker 1: But it has great retention and almost a quarter of
- 39:04Speaker 1: a million views right now. So but can you ever,
- 39:07Speaker 1: I'm sure you can. What quarter million views is how
- 39:12Speaker 1: many people clicked it? How many people have seen it
- 39:14Speaker 1: all the way through. Um, it's hard to say how
- 39:16Speaker 1: many people have seen it all the way through, but
- 39:17Speaker 1: it gives you a retention rating, and that one's so
- 39:22Speaker 1: that one just keeps the people like certain videos. Yeah,
- 39:25Speaker 1: like just like any show, you want to keep their
- 39:27Speaker 1: attention there so they continue to keep watching. And something
- 39:29Speaker 1: with that video, just the storyline of it and the
- 39:32Speaker 1: way it just in one sentence synopsis, what is it?
- 39:36Speaker 1: The hunt? I shot the bull that's named the fire Bowl,
- 39:40Speaker 1: and it's just kind of gone like internet famous. I guess.
- 39:43Speaker 1: I don't know, is this a really big bull? But
- 39:45Speaker 1: the story is so cool and so rare and lucky
- 39:49Speaker 1: enough I was able to capture it on film, So
- 39:52Speaker 1: I don't know. There's a lot of anticipation for the
- 39:55Speaker 1: video to come out because it was floating around social
- 39:57Speaker 1: media for so long. When the killed this giant that
- 40:00Speaker 1: I killed this bull? What happened with the fire The
- 40:03Speaker 1: cool thing about this bull is, you know, Eric is
- 40:07Speaker 1: a shed hunter, and if you guys know shed hunters
- 40:09Speaker 1: are crazy people, they will they like, Eric has history
- 40:14Speaker 1: with this bull. He's watched this bull for years, Like
- 40:16Speaker 1: he's watched this bull grow up, and he collected its
- 40:19Speaker 1: horns and stuff. Like Eric wasn't just out to kill
- 40:22Speaker 1: any walking down the mountain like he went out to
- 40:25Speaker 1: kill this one specific animal and he did. I documented everything,
- 40:29Speaker 1: the scouting and everything leading up to it, and the
- 40:31Speaker 1: fire bull was this, This was the bull I was.
- 40:33Speaker 1: I wanted to hunt and you had you had hiss
- 40:36Speaker 1: from over a period some friends of mine had collected
- 40:39Speaker 1: UM a couple of sets off him, and uh, a
- 40:43Speaker 1: young kid and his dad had found two sets off
- 40:46Speaker 1: him as well, So we just knew he was on
- 40:49Speaker 1: the mountain because give you to give me the antlers
- 40:51Speaker 1: after you killed it. I do have one set from
- 40:54Speaker 1: a friend who I had a set off a bull
- 40:56Speaker 1: he killed, so we I had the set off like
- 41:02Speaker 1: swap now, and he was super nice about it. His
- 41:05Speaker 1: name's Jared, and he was, uh, yeah, it was like
- 41:07Speaker 1: no questions asked. He's like, this is your bull. So
- 41:10Speaker 1: we traded um. But what was neat or what was
- 41:12Speaker 1: interesting about the hunt and why that hunt has kind
- 41:15Speaker 1: of gone viral is I actually shot him twice, but
- 41:18Speaker 1: twelve days apart. So I shot him the opening week
- 41:23Speaker 1: and it just with the bow. This is an archery
- 41:26Speaker 1: hunt and I'm I'm hunting out of a ground blind
- 41:29Speaker 1: and opening Thursday. So the hunt started on Saturday and
- 41:32Speaker 1: Opening Thursday. A good friend of mine, Kobe, he came
- 41:35Speaker 1: to help me with my hunt and I said, well,
- 41:37Speaker 1: I this bull has been seen right in this meadow.
- 41:40Speaker 1: I'm just kind of been sitting there and haven't seen
- 41:41Speaker 1: him yet. So he was kind of getting bummed out
- 41:44Speaker 1: because he had taken off a lot of work to
- 41:47Speaker 1: come help me, But he had been wishing that he
- 41:50Speaker 1: would have waited tell the rut because in Utah we
- 41:53Speaker 1: get that early season and the bow hunters start to
- 41:55Speaker 1: get into mid September, which the ruts starts to get going.
- 41:59Speaker 1: And I just remember telling him like, Hey, this is
- 42:01Speaker 1: gonna be an awesome hunt. Like there's bulls you know
- 42:03Speaker 1: in this area. We're gonna hunt the fireball. I mean
- 42:06Speaker 1: that's what I was doing. I was hunting the fireball.
- 42:09Speaker 1: So it was the opening Thursday and him and I
- 42:11Speaker 1: were sitting in the ground blind and this is just
- 42:12Speaker 1: a ground blind built out of pine needles and tree
- 42:15Speaker 1: lambs and anything we can build up this, uh like
- 42:18Speaker 1: makeshift ground blind. And uh, the fireball came out into
- 42:23Speaker 1: the meadow and I remember my friend he's I was like,
- 42:26Speaker 1: get the camera ready, the fireballs coming, and he's like
- 42:29Speaker 1: you're you're lying, you know. He kept saying, you're yeah,
- 42:32Speaker 1: all right, And I said, get the camera ready, and
- 42:34Speaker 1: he can just tell by my you know, the way
- 42:36Speaker 1: I said that that he got the camera ready and
- 42:38Speaker 1: and sure enough the fireball fed out and I waited
- 42:42Speaker 1: and it was this is so funny, going back to
- 42:45Speaker 1: like being in those moments where we're filming and when
- 42:48Speaker 1: we're not and things we can we should see, and
- 42:50Speaker 1: just having our minds for me at that moment, like
- 42:54Speaker 1: you can see in the film, like my heart is
- 42:55Speaker 1: racing when I first spotted him, but it took him
- 42:58Speaker 1: a quite a while just to feed up to us
- 43:00Speaker 1: and to get to where I can like clear all
- 43:02Speaker 1: the branches and shoot at him. But in that moment,
- 43:05Speaker 1: like I was not hunting in my mind, Like I
- 43:08Speaker 1: had the bowl in my hand, and here's this bowl
- 43:10Speaker 1: that I've been, you know, waiting for all summer to hunt,
- 43:13Speaker 1: and I've got the tag and I've got my chance,
- 43:15Speaker 1: and I'm like spaced out, I'm zoned out, and I'm
- 43:18Speaker 1: not even hunting like my instincts. I was just enjoying
- 43:21Speaker 1: the visual of like, wow, there he is, Like it
- 43:24Speaker 1: was the first time I had seen him that year
- 43:26Speaker 1: with my eyes other than trail camp pictures. So it
- 43:30Speaker 1: was my friend that was like, dude, right now, shoot
- 43:34Speaker 1: and I'm I'm like, oh yeah, yeah, like yeah, you're right,
- 43:36Speaker 1: you know. So I had waited for his head to
- 43:39Speaker 1: be down, I had waited for that French shoulder to
- 43:41Speaker 1: go forward, and I just put it right where I
- 43:43Speaker 1: wanted it and let go and we heard the smack
- 43:48Speaker 1: and the bull round off and my buddy just you
- 43:50Speaker 1: got him, You nailed him and everything, and we're so happy.
- 43:53Speaker 1: And the cameraman was like, he's not, he's not, He's
- 43:59Speaker 1: not he was supposed to be. This guy gets so excited.
- 44:02Speaker 1: I mean, this guy loves to hunt, and him and
- 44:05Speaker 1: I have had some great experiences on the mountain together
- 44:08Speaker 1: and he just can't hold it in. Bottom line, he
- 44:10Speaker 1: gets too excited. So's you got him. So we're excited.
- 44:13Speaker 1: And we watched replayed the footage and it just uh,
- 44:16Speaker 1: he kind of jumped the string and I hit hit
- 44:18Speaker 1: him in the shoulder blade. I mean that you can
- 44:20Speaker 1: see in the film that the arrow just rides up
- 44:23Speaker 1: the shoulder instead of going, you know, penetrating in and uh,
- 44:28Speaker 1: it rained all night and we didn't find him. The
- 44:31Speaker 1: next day, luckily, a friend did see himbedded in the
- 44:34Speaker 1: thick timber, and I thought I was going to have
- 44:36Speaker 1: a second chance right then to go and shoot him,
- 44:39Speaker 1: but unfortunately he got up and walked off. So the
- 44:42Speaker 1: crazy thing about the hunt is I sat that blind.
- 44:44Speaker 1: I kept sitting in that blind, and a lot of
- 44:46Speaker 1: people doubted me, and a lot of people said I
- 44:48Speaker 1: was wasting my time. And twelve days later, in the
- 44:52Speaker 1: same blind, hunting by myself, filming myself with you know,
- 44:55Speaker 1: just a little hand held camera on a tripod in
- 44:58Speaker 1: my head camera, he came out twelve days later. Oh
- 45:03Speaker 1: he looked, Oh, he looks so healthy yet. I mean,
- 45:06Speaker 1: the first time I shot him, he kind of had
- 45:08Speaker 1: some velvet hanging off his antlers, and he kind of
- 45:10Speaker 1: had that a really thin summer coat. This is twelve
- 45:13Speaker 1: days later, and his antlers are now just polished up,
- 45:16Speaker 1: really dark timbered antlers, and his cape was just even.
- 45:20Speaker 1: He was getting more into that rut phase, and he
- 45:23Speaker 1: just looks so pretty. And he didn't even have a
- 45:25Speaker 1: limp drilled in the shoulder blade. And twelve days later
- 45:28Speaker 1: he's just walking as majestic as he was out there.
- 45:32Speaker 1: I mean, it was crazy. You're causing me to enter
- 45:35Speaker 1: into that fantasy of all the stuff I ever crippled
- 45:37Speaker 1: is just fine. Yeah, oh like and that's that. Going
- 45:41Speaker 1: back to that how we talked about how filming we
- 45:44Speaker 1: can learn so much and it does some great things,
- 45:46Speaker 1: Like we learned a lot from this hunt. You know,
- 45:49Speaker 1: a lot of people told me he'll never be back.
- 45:52Speaker 1: He's going nocturnal. Um, he knows that meadow is dangerous now,
- 45:57Speaker 1: and I just said, look, these animals live in ang
- 46:01Speaker 1: their habitual I think he's going to be back. So
- 46:04Speaker 1: I kept sitting that blind and when it finally happened, oh,
- 46:09Speaker 1: right in the money, Like it was a little bit low,
- 46:11Speaker 1: but right behind the shoulder and uh, same side, same side.
- 46:18Speaker 1: When people would ask me, well, what tell me the story,
- 46:20Speaker 1: I remember Kobe was the first one I called on
- 46:23Speaker 1: my cell phone to tell him the story. He said, well,
- 46:25Speaker 1: what happened? I said, well, Kobe, remember how it happened
- 46:27Speaker 1: when you were there? He says, yeah, I said that's
- 46:30Speaker 1: what happened. So what do you mean, like, same same area,
- 46:33Speaker 1: same everything. I was like, yeah, same exact spot, almost
- 46:36Speaker 1: the same time of night when I hit him. He
- 46:38Speaker 1: ran in the same exact path out of this meadow,
- 46:41Speaker 1: and so I was like, you're giving way too much
- 46:44Speaker 1: away right now, we're supposed to spark their interests. So
- 46:47Speaker 1: they go and watch the video just right now, just
- 46:51Speaker 1: say like, and that's when the bowling happened. Yeah, the
- 46:54Speaker 1: bears and the coyotes met. It's it is a crazy
- 46:58Speaker 1: story because not only wound an animal and he comes
- 47:02Speaker 1: back to the exact same spot, like step for step,
- 47:05Speaker 1: it's a bowl that's supposed to be the smartest creature
- 47:09Speaker 1: on the planet or in the woods, does the exact
- 47:12Speaker 1: same thing after Well, you know what, I think. I
- 47:14Speaker 1: think that bull was thinking there's no way that guy
- 47:16Speaker 1: is gonna come back because he's not there, Like, but
- 47:21Speaker 1: what if that dude does come back, Like, why would
- 47:23Speaker 1: he come back? He shot me there, he thinks I'll
- 47:26Speaker 1: never come back. Yeah, that's the only place I am
- 47:28Speaker 1: going to. Yeah, but it was wild. But going back
- 47:31Speaker 1: to your question, like some of our videos like we
- 47:34Speaker 1: run five to seven minutes, but videos like that that
- 47:39Speaker 1: it's hard to tell that story in less than that
- 47:42Speaker 1: twenty three minutes. Like I have actually been working on
- 47:45Speaker 1: a an edit to shorten it up for a um.
- 47:48Speaker 1: The full draw film tour. But it's been hard because
- 47:52Speaker 1: it's hard to take away from the story, you know,
- 47:54Speaker 1: all the preparation, the scouting and everything that happened, because
- 47:58Speaker 1: it's just the way it was edited. Twenty four minutes
- 48:00Speaker 1: was just the way it was. I didn't think like, Okay,
- 48:03Speaker 1: I have to edit this at or twenty two or whatever.
- 48:06Speaker 1: I just edited the way I felt I liked it,
- 48:08Speaker 1: and then that's what works. Is that on the Hushing
- 48:10Speaker 1: channel to Yeah, that's on the Hushing channel. So if
- 48:13Speaker 1: you just search the fire Bowl ELK Hunt, it's the
- 48:17Speaker 1: beauty two. The beautiful thing about YouTube were so free
- 48:20Speaker 1: to do, you know. I remember being on the New
- 48:22Speaker 1: Mexico Hunt. You remember camping out and you're asking me
- 48:25Speaker 1: how long The day after I show me how long
- 48:27Speaker 1: we're going to make the film, and I was like
- 48:30Speaker 1: trying to make it under ten? What was it? What
- 48:32Speaker 1: did end up being eight? Fine? I mean nine minutes
- 48:35Speaker 1: told the story and I didn't need to put anything
- 48:37Speaker 1: else in there, you know, so go ahead. I was
- 48:42Speaker 1: just gonna say that. I kind of like the time constraints.
- 48:44Speaker 1: I like sort of it makes you creatively dig for
- 48:50Speaker 1: things when when you need to dig for things It
- 48:53Speaker 1: also makes you not be precious about a lot of
- 48:55Speaker 1: things too. Cutting down is a really cool process, and
- 48:59Speaker 1: like the collaborator nature working with editors and when you
- 49:01Speaker 1: guys do your own stuff, but we have it, you know,
- 49:03Speaker 1: we're working in teams and sort of having a bunch
- 49:06Speaker 1: of people craft this stuff. And you know, being precious
- 49:10Speaker 1: about stuff is for me, could be an issue if
- 49:12Speaker 1: I didn't have other people just to like the thing
- 49:15Speaker 1: that like I went to a writing school, you know, um,
- 49:18Speaker 1: and the thing that writers just pound and pound and
- 49:21Speaker 1: pound in you, and like every writer says, it's like
- 49:24Speaker 1: you gotta kill your babies. You gotta kill your babies,
- 49:26Speaker 1: you know, um, meaning don't let like these moments that
- 49:33Speaker 1: you that you think are so greater, these things that
- 49:34Speaker 1: you're you that are so precious to you, like getting
- 49:37Speaker 1: the way of the greater good, you know. I remember,
- 49:40Speaker 1: like when I wrote my Buffalo book, Um, I wrote
- 49:43Speaker 1: it one d pages too long, you know, And I'm
- 49:47Speaker 1: telling you, man, I like fought over every word right
- 49:50Speaker 1: and I got it all done. It was just ridiculously long.
- 49:53Speaker 1: I went through an acts a hundred pages out of there, painful.
- 49:58Speaker 1: But now I'm like, I can't believe i' had that
- 50:00Speaker 1: garbage in area like later when you look at it's
- 50:03Speaker 1: like like I would take a whole chapter to just
- 50:05Speaker 1: grab a paragraph out of it, you know, but you
- 50:08Speaker 1: go like, well no, because I have like it's special
- 50:11Speaker 1: because I did it. Yeah, that's what it is. What
- 50:14Speaker 1: you get into your head like its special because I
- 50:16Speaker 1: did it, and and and I already got my time
- 50:18Speaker 1: r now, so now it's out there. And I think
- 50:20Speaker 1: that like having that discipline to go shorter we used
- 50:25Speaker 1: to get like we still get inquiries but be like, oh,
- 50:26Speaker 1: you guys should be an hour long, and I just
- 50:28Speaker 1: think like, oh yeah, it should be an hour long,
- 50:29Speaker 1: like me long show. Now I'm like I kind of
- 50:33Speaker 1: over time. I've just sort of like, I like twenty
- 50:35Speaker 1: two minutes because I feel like in twenty two minutes
- 50:38Speaker 1: you can when it's right, it could be just so
- 50:42Speaker 1: tight and fast. I watched the show without the ads though, right,
- 50:47Speaker 1: so I watched like the way it's meant to be,
- 50:49Speaker 1: and I sometimes remind myself, oh yeah, but it's broken
- 50:51Speaker 1: up my hands. But it's somehow science so fast and
- 50:54Speaker 1: has such a roller coaster quality to it. That's the best.
- 50:59Speaker 1: I said. It's like it's just like wham and people
- 51:02Speaker 1: be like, dude, I could watch that for an hour.
- 51:04Speaker 1: I'm like, I'm that makes me glad it was twenty
- 51:07Speaker 1: two minutes. I think a good way to gauge it
- 51:10Speaker 1: is if you watch it like a twenty two minute
- 51:13Speaker 1: video on YouTube. Does it feel like it's twenty two minutes?
- 51:16Speaker 1: Did you at the end of the video or you're like, well,
- 51:18Speaker 1: that was twenty two minutes. Were you like at the time,
- 51:22Speaker 1: you like, I mean TV, you guys are under restraint.
- 51:25Speaker 1: For you guys are twenty two minutes every episode, right, Like,
- 51:27Speaker 1: how much after you guys go out and film and
- 51:31Speaker 1: you guys turn the media into the editors, how much
- 51:35Speaker 1: do you sit down with the editors dan and and
- 51:37Speaker 1: go through with him and try to tell the story
- 51:40Speaker 1: or so, yeah, the whole process. I think that would
- 51:43Speaker 1: be interesting. So in the current form, so you honest
- 51:46Speaker 1: is the producer. So he will create, he will run
- 51:49Speaker 1: the pre production, he will plan things. He will create
- 51:51Speaker 1: a document called the treatment, which is the hope or
- 51:54Speaker 1: plan for the story to happen in the field. He'll
- 51:57Speaker 1: be there and will be in charge of capturing the
- 52:01Speaker 1: story both on camera and then in his head. And
- 52:04Speaker 1: in notes too later going to the post production process.
- 52:08Speaker 1: So that's um, yeah, but post producing the episode would
- 52:12Speaker 1: be working hand in hand with the editor every step
- 52:14Speaker 1: of the way. So basically we turn in a what
- 52:18Speaker 1: we call producer notes, which is so the treatments a
- 52:21Speaker 1: document at the beginning, and then after the shoot the
- 52:24Speaker 1: documents called the producer notes basically is an act by
- 52:27Speaker 1: act breakdown with possible vo already written, with really just
- 52:33Speaker 1: a script or writing out the show. But that changes
- 52:37Speaker 1: a lot, and it rarely is you know, actually the
- 52:40Speaker 1: product because how many hours are you deal with? How
- 52:42Speaker 1: many hours afore it's you know what people askid I
- 52:45Speaker 1: don't even know it? And it depends. I mean, we
- 52:47Speaker 1: shoot up to how many hours are on one ratio
- 52:53Speaker 1: and oftentimes documentary style filming, which is what we do
- 52:58Speaker 1: and which by the most hunters do you know when
- 53:00Speaker 1: they're shooting their hunts, is you can get upwards of
- 53:03Speaker 1: like fifty to sixty two one ratio. You can shoot
- 53:08Speaker 1: almost an hour for one minute. Man, I'd say we
- 53:11Speaker 1: should especially have multiple cameras going, which we often do.
- 53:14Speaker 1: It's a lot more. I'd say it's a higher ratio
- 53:16Speaker 1: than that, even especially counted Timelafs. I mean we come back,
- 53:22Speaker 1: what say, eight full cards at a hundred twenty minutes each,
- 53:26Speaker 1: and if you have two shooters, double that. You know
- 53:29Speaker 1: you're talking about thousands of minutes of footage, maybe between
- 53:33Speaker 1: one and three thousand minutes of footage. Um, so at
- 53:37Speaker 1: that point could go up to a hundred of one. Sure. Yeah,
- 53:41Speaker 1: but so and we have, you know, editors that we
- 53:44Speaker 1: have been working with for a long time, and there's
- 53:46Speaker 1: there's a couple of editors that specifically, Um, you can
- 53:50Speaker 1: be a little less hands on, but you know, I
- 53:52Speaker 1: Post I produced, in Post produced probably I don't know,
- 53:58Speaker 1: fifty episodes of mediat And it just depends on who
- 54:00Speaker 1: you were working with, whether or not you had to
- 54:02Speaker 1: be really really directed. Yeah, you can editor to cut
- 54:06Speaker 1: a few and they kind of know how you guys
- 54:08Speaker 1: like them. I can just say being on that. You know,
- 54:11Speaker 1: we were in the same camp a few years ago
- 54:12Speaker 1: in New Mexico. I was blown away at the at
- 54:17Speaker 1: the work you guys put in to capture an episode,
- 54:20Speaker 1: like there was what they were? You were there did
- 54:23Speaker 1: he was thearn. You guys had two other cameramen right,
- 54:25Speaker 1: one assistant audio guy who's up there with this. Peter
- 54:31Speaker 1: was out there with this. But there's four guys and
- 54:34Speaker 1: then Steve and you guys were packing the long lens
- 54:38Speaker 1: the DSLRs, and you guys packed back in for what
- 54:41Speaker 1: a couple of nights there we carey a bunch of
- 54:43Speaker 1: John Yeah, I mean, I can't imagine the excess amount
- 54:47Speaker 1: of batteries you pack in on a hunt like that.
- 54:50Speaker 1: And then SD cards and wild batteries are the limiting
- 54:54Speaker 1: factor oftentimes, and and we'll have to either pack back
- 54:56Speaker 1: to to recharge batteries or bring a that that becomes
- 55:01Speaker 1: a limiting factor both for weight. Well, actually for a
- 55:03Speaker 1: while we only had some manner batteries. Now we have
- 55:05Speaker 1: like hundred and fifty of those big batteries now, so
- 55:09Speaker 1: they each one pound. That's wild. It was wild to
- 55:16Speaker 1: see though, Like you guys put a lot of time
- 55:18Speaker 1: and effort into capturing. We finish out how it goes.
- 55:22Speaker 1: So you didn't get it to the end though, though
- 55:26Speaker 1: we're gonna take a quick break. Yeah, So finish out though,
- 55:28Speaker 1: because you didn't get to the end of it gets made, okay, Yeah,
- 55:31Speaker 1: So while the editor, the editor cuts it, and he
- 55:33Speaker 1: cuts what we call a rough cut, which is about
- 55:35Speaker 1: to time, so you know, maybe it's within a minute
- 55:38Speaker 1: of the ending end running time hopefully, And then he
- 55:42Speaker 1: sends we do around notes, so Steve gets it, I
- 55:45Speaker 1: get it, yeah, and gets it. Um. Usually that's just
- 55:49Speaker 1: about it, maybe one other person, and then we do
- 55:51Speaker 1: around a very very specific critical notes on that cut
- 55:56Speaker 1: goes back to the editor. There's a couple more days
- 55:58Speaker 1: to get out of fine cut. We do the same
- 56:00Speaker 1: process and other round of notes goes back to the editor.
- 56:04Speaker 1: He works those notes out, and there's a lot of
- 56:06Speaker 1: conversation always goes on in between that. Finally we get
- 56:10Speaker 1: to what we call prelock cut, and we all kind
- 56:12Speaker 1: of sign off on it. Record and sorry, there's other
- 56:15Speaker 1: stuff in they're recording v O getting all that cut
- 56:18Speaker 1: in doing rewrites for v O UM. But then finally,
- 56:22Speaker 1: after you know, three to four week edit process and
- 56:25Speaker 1: and a whole process, it's a heck of a lot
- 56:27Speaker 1: longer than that than we have a so we finally
- 56:31Speaker 1: finally craft these shows. You know, there's a there's a
- 56:35Speaker 1: lot of people with a lot of brains and creativity
- 56:38Speaker 1: working their butts off too to make these things the
- 56:41Speaker 1: way they are. In the end, it feels natural. It
- 56:45Speaker 1: does the product like you wouldn't guess. Yeah, you know,
- 56:50Speaker 1: if you had to sit and watch those hundreds of
- 56:52Speaker 1: hours of footage would be mind boggling. I can't even
- 56:55Speaker 1: imagine trying to scrub through all that video. What what
- 56:59Speaker 1: you guys, shoot race, you're doing YouTube video? When you
- 57:02Speaker 1: say like fifty one, like we might get like fifty
- 57:05Speaker 1: fifty minutes for every video. I don't know, Like I
- 57:09Speaker 1: would say a couple of hours, a couple hours of
- 57:12Speaker 1: of of like yeah, different point of views, go pro angles.
- 57:16Speaker 1: But I bet like that New Mexico Hunt for example,
- 57:18Speaker 1: I think it's eight nine minutes long. I bet I
- 57:20Speaker 1: you cut through like three hours of footage and I'm
- 57:25Speaker 1: like by the time I'm done, I'm just like, all right,
- 57:27Speaker 1: just put it up, Like I'm so tired of watch
- 57:30Speaker 1: myself talk and walk around the hills. But do you
- 57:32Speaker 1: guys have any interest in the TV length type thing?
- 57:35Speaker 1: I mean, that's something to interest you or you're you're
- 57:37Speaker 1: just your YouTube all the way. I'm a YouTuber YouTuber,
- 57:40Speaker 1: Like you have to get a new business cards. Yeah,
- 57:43Speaker 1: I don't have business cards. I'm a YouTuber YouTuber have
- 57:45Speaker 1: business cards? No. I I love the platform of YouTube.
- 57:49Speaker 1: I love the possibilities on YouTube, and uh, that's just
- 57:53Speaker 1: I mean every day Monday through Friday, one billion people
- 57:55Speaker 1: log into that that that website, And so I mean
- 58:00Speaker 1: it's just been cool. And I don't I don't really
- 58:01Speaker 1: see see ourselves doing anything different. I love the freedom
- 58:05Speaker 1: we have to do whatever we want, upload videos when
- 58:07Speaker 1: we want. Um makes seven minute videos for twenty three
- 58:11Speaker 1: minute videos like, So we're happy doing what we do.
- 58:14Speaker 1: But I mean, yeah, what do you think. I'm I'm
- 58:19Speaker 1: committed to YouTube. I've done a lot of research, and
- 58:23Speaker 1: I've been so intrigued by the platform for the last
- 58:28Speaker 1: three or four years that I just feel like it's
- 58:30Speaker 1: a good opportunity for me if it's what I want
- 58:32Speaker 1: to do really well and what I enjoyed doing really well.
- 58:36Speaker 1: The same conversation would happen about cassettes and CDs. You know,
- 58:39Speaker 1: one day they're going to be talking about TV shows
- 58:41Speaker 1: in the same way, Like remember when TV shows I
- 58:44Speaker 1: didn't want to like trouble with you guys, But I yeah,
- 58:48Speaker 1: I don't know. We spent a ton of time talking
- 58:53Speaker 1: about digital. Let's talk about what's what's happened? Yeah, I think,
- 58:59Speaker 1: I mean, I don't TV will ever be obsolete. But
- 59:02Speaker 1: at the same time, like I would love to know
- 59:05Speaker 1: the ratio of Americans, like people in America that have
- 59:09Speaker 1: TV and have the Internet, and who has both, because
- 59:12Speaker 1: I know I haven't had TV in five years. Like
- 59:15Speaker 1: I can consume all my entertainment from Tina Neet and
- 59:19Speaker 1: everyone has the Internet now everyone has access to the
- 59:23Speaker 1: internet basically an iPhone, tablet, watch whatever. Well, we know
- 59:28Speaker 1: for a fact that meat eater fans or meat eater
- 59:30Speaker 1: watchers over are not watching it on the channel at
- 59:34Speaker 1: the time edit airs, They're they're watching it through other means.
- 59:38Speaker 1: We did, Yeah, we talked about tapes and c d
- 59:42Speaker 1: s earlier. It's like, right at the time that that
- 59:46Speaker 1: guy did that persuasion speech in communication one on one. Okay,
- 59:51Speaker 1: an album that was out at that time was Counting
- 59:54Speaker 1: Crows August and everything after. Now the guy that the
- 59:59Speaker 1: you know, whoever that guy is in that band, I
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: don't think he was sitting around being like, but are
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: they gonna listen to it on CD or cassette. It's
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: like at a point it's like, if you have confidence
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: in what you're making, you know what I mean, I
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: don't spend too much time thinking about it being this
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: show or that show. You know, like I'll spend the
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: time I'm thinking about how people are going to consume it.
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: I mean, I don't want to get caught in a
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: weird thing where we haven't thought our stuff out. But
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: I feel like, you know, the basic format, the premise,
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: you know, I mean, I know we'll find homes yeah
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: for the stuff. I agree. I feel like if you're
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: making I mean, content is king right. That's the old saying,
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: like you make good content, it can live anywhere. Um,
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: I feel like you guys could transform what you do
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: now you're twenty two minutes onto two wherever, whatever digital
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: platformat would do great. But you're you don't have to
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: think about that right now. Just make good content. I
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: get a little jealous of those TV shows on HBO
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: or Netflix that like you get once twenty two minutes
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: maybe good episodes to six. You kind of have that.
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: That's that's pretty cool. You know what, here's one thing
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: I want to do. How long we've been, how long
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: we've been talking about There's one thing I want to do,
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: and I'm gonna do. I'm gonna do the first one. Um,
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: because people have such an interest in recording, capturing, hunts,
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: fishing out of doors, whatever. I want to just go
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: around the room for a while and very quickly say things.
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: You give your findings, Okay, things you think. Um. One
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: thing that I've found that that's become a personal thing
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: for me is I really like and we go to
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: great ends to establish hunting big game, okay, or any
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: kind of hunting, to contextualize visually the hunter with the quarry.
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: Because I'll point out right now I'm watching it's been
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: out for Whi've been watching Planet Earth right, and Planet
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: Earth you know, like tells the stories about Earth, but
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: they tied in with the real bread and butter of
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: that as predator prey interactions. Right, It's like they just punctuated. Well,
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: they don't go four minutes about showing something eat something.
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: Oftentimes they got great footage, right a snow leopard grabs
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: the mark or and the mark or gets away. All
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: the times they don't. So they'll show like Ethiopian wolf walking,
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: then they'll show a baboon looking nervous. Then they'll show
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: the wolf, and they'll show the baboon, and they'll show
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: the wolf, and they'll show the baboon and the baboon
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: runs away and you go, you know what, never saw
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: the damn babboon and the wolf in the same shot,
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: And it's like like a weird kind of fuckery going on,
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: you know, And I hate that kind of thing to
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: where I always feel like when we have a seque,
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: it's where you've got like long lens foote, your footage
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: of an ant one guy is filming an animal, a
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: turkey coming in, and one guy is filming you, and
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: later you're like bouncing like turkey, you, Turkey you. I
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: always feel like the viewer's mind is open to the
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: facts chains being jerked, and I breathed such a sigh
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: of relief when there's that shot where there's like you
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: or the hunter and the thing to get brought together.
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: It's like the technical term is tying it in, Like
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: a shot that ties it together, solidifies, it solidifies that
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: action because when that happens that back and forth, everyone thinks,
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: is this rail is just really going on? And it
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: just solidifies that when it shows like an over the
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: shoulder shot of you with your gun and there's the
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: turkey and the the guy that like gave me eater,
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: its visual look to to a huge degree is a
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: guy named Mo found who shot Men the first ones
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: and Mo, I don't know if you ever articulated it
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: this way or not, but Mo had this sort of
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: idea that was like that the viewer is your buddy.
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: You'r the viewers your buddy with you, you know, and
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: and if you watch the show, you like you start
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: to kind of feel that where like the camera is
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: often right where if you were with your buddy and
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: your buddies hunting. It's like the cameras where you'd be
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: where you'd want to be to be a participant in this.
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: And that's sort of like over the shoulder shot when
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: all of a sudden something comes into view and you
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: got the person, and your person could be just blurry right.
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: It's completely like out of the depth field, but it
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: just feels so good. I remember that first season it
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: was substantiated. I think, you know, we maybe after the
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: second episode or something, we gotta Facebook comment that said,
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: you know, I can't believe how you shot this and
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: felt like I was right there with you, and that
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: was you know, that is the point. It's those moments.
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: It's like those moments where everything comes together in a
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: way and we've even finding. Sometimes you're talking about something
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: so far away. So we do a lot like open
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: country hunting and your glass and stuff. We'll just go
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: do an overshot. You know, someone will get back. I'll
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: be talking about something I'm pointing and they just kind
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: of zoom over. You're never in a million years gonna
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: pick it up, but you zoom over and you start
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: to make out the landscape and then you can go
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: to that tighter shot that shows it. But you do
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: feel like you've been delivered to that point. It doesn't
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: have this like arbitrary feel to it that makes it
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: feel like TV, you know, because oftentimes when I'm watching stuff,
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: I don't like to have any moment where I'm pulled
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: out to question what's going on. And like, like I
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: thought about watching the Planet Earth series. They show these
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: they're showing like these polar bears making their first emergence,
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: but the snow is covered in tracks like they've clearly
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: been out a whole bunch of times. They keep going
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: back in the den their first emergence. It's like we's
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: tracks throw over the place, like the entrance of the hold.
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: I'll mud it up, you know, I'm like, why tell
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: me that because now I'm sadden, you're thinking about why
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: you said that when it's not the way it is.
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: So just have it be that he's coming up is
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: then and I'll enjoy it. I won't be like distracted,
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: you know. And so I'm always like when I'm watching
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: our stuff, I'm always like, what are the things that's
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: gonna catch someone and pull him out of the reality
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: I want him to experience and make him enter into
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: the reality of his head as a skeptical viewer. Yeah,
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: you know. Another example of that, to take it even
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: further is like if you are cooking a piece of
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: meat over a fire, there's something magical and beautiful about
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: a shot that actually without cutting away pans from that
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: piece of meat up to your face. Rather than having
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: two shots where you just have a shot of that
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: meat on the fire, you have a shot of the face.
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: Like that's fine, that's great TV. That's you know, you
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: can do that well. But there's something specific about that
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: uninterrupted either having both objects in the frame and exactly
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: the same time, or being able to swing and move
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: without actually cutting the shot. There's it's something seamless and
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: um important that happens in being a place gives it
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: more realness. Like its exactly like with a kill shot, right,
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: like you know, like you can either do that over
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: the shoulder kill shot where you're in the frame, the
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: animals in the frame focused, your shoulder might be out
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: of focus. And I remember, like you guys first season
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: there was a lot of that. I love that shot.
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: But like if you are zoomed in on the animal
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: after the kill shot and then that swing to the yeah,
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: just gives it that realness, you know. So we'll deal
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: it like dealing cards. So that makes Dan's up. They
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: are just finding just one tip, just like a thing,
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: man like, like like like an example of what I'd
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: escaped for for people who want to like people, um,
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: people who want to capture their stuff, because so many
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: people now want to capture their stuff. Man. Yeah, when
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: I go out fishing, even when fishing on Lake Washington,
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: the guy out there fishing without without all right, So
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: I'll say very basic one that's that's not very sexy
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: but super important is just learn what the heck you're
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: doing with your equipment. No how practice enough, read enough,
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: have somebody show you how to use your camera and
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: you actually use it and audio. Actually let me make
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: that my point. If you have crappy audio and it's
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: it's not like your quality will never rise. I mean
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: you still might have a successful video I don't know.
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: But have an actual microphone mike deup, know how to
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: manage it, have good levels so people can hear what
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: you're doing, and uh learn how to make a shot
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: with cameras, and and learn how to be steady. Don't
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: don't be wobbly, I don't just practice. Can you do
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: audio without getting into like audio equipment? Do you mean
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: just give I mean, yeah, a lot of cameras have
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: onboard um mikes that that may be okay in most situations,
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: but you get in some wind, or you get in
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: in some other type of scenario and it's no longer
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: going to be good. Get a cheap lava mike. Get
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: a cheap mike to put on your on your shirt.
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: Lava mics now the road makes them, and you can
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: download the app that you can plug it directly into
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: your phone and it gets great audio and it's not
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: a lot of money. It's like honor bucks for the
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: law and a zoom recorder. Just spend a little time
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: and uh yeah, learn what you're doing with your stuff.
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: I had to learn that all myself. Like I started
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: shooting before I knew how to operate a camera, and
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: it was tough, you know. But my finding and we
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: get told, I mean, we could ask a lot about
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: how we got into filming and stuff. And I feel
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: like now we're talking to not people that are trying
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: to create TV shows necessarily people were trying to capture
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: the capture stuff. My my finding is just do it.
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: I mean, the way. And this was going back to
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: like me talking about cutting from VCR to VCR with
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: that big giant VHS when I was trying to record
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: me snowboarding is technology is crazy, man. There's some great
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: cameras out there that somebody can pick up for three
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: four bucks and you can record some amazing stuff. And
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: I think for most beginners is they think they have
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: to have all the nicest equipment and they have to
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: go through film school. I don't know, It's just get
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: a good camera and go out and capture moments, because
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: that's what it's all about, is you're trying to relive
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: those moments one day. You know, if you're not trying
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: to put out a TV show or YouTube channel, you
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: just want to capture your your hunts. Just do it
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: and figure it out. Go out and shoot wildlife, and
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: shoot your buddies shooting it, deer and shoot, try to
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: film yourself and just learn and do it. Because even
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: after we started hunting, sometimes and I'm sure you get
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: this way, sometimes we're on a hunt for ten days
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: and it's like, all right, leave the camera at home.
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: I don't care if we get the kill shot. I
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: want to end this thing. And then I've done it
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: a few times, I'm ountain shot something and I thought,
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: how stupid was that for me not to have the
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: camera going. It's easy to set up a camera, it's
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: easy to have your buddy hold a camera. It might
- 1:10:56Speaker 1: not be the most professional footage, but it's a memory
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: that you can relive, and it goes back to like
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: talking about, uh, you know, exploiting animals. One of the
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: coolest things I think about hunting is seeing old school
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: pictures from like my grandpa's time and my great grandpa's
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: time and going through those and seeing what hunting was
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: like back then. You know, they everyone had a twenty bock,
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: you know, in the back of the truck. But it's
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: so cool to relive that through these pictures, and I
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: feel that way with what we're filming. One day, my
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: great great grandkids are gonna go be able to go
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: and watch My adventures on if it's YouTuber wherever. But
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: it's just capturing those moments one time. Yeah, so I my, my, my.
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: I would just say, if you want to just go
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: out and capture, you know, some footage of you hunting,
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: just do it. Get a good camera. You can use
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: your damn phone almost like the phone to take amazing footage,
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: but go out and buy you a four camera and
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: just start doing it. I gotta get started something. Well, yeah,
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: that's what I was gonna say, is just get out
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: there and get art it. So I have to think
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: of something else. Um. But one of the things that
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: come to me when a lot of people approached me
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: and say, hey, I got this awesome you know hunt
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: on film. Do you want to use it for your
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: next project, your next DVD, YouTube, whatever it is. And
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: sometimes I've been like, yeah, like cool, let's let's check
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: it out. And yeah, I got the kill shot and
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: that's it. I'm like, this is a great kill shot,
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: and and the kill shot can be very important in
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: the hunting film or hunting TV show or something that
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: we do on YouTube. But there it is. It is,
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: It is that sliver of you know, that second or
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: two seconds, and that's it. The rest of the hunt
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: and the story is like you said earlier, is that
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: fifty hours of b roll footage and all the other
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: cool stuff. So my advice would be to film everything, Like,
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: pack a lot of memory cards. The worst thing is
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: running out of memory cards when you're out there and
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: you're trying to delete all your other things so you
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: can film the next thing. Yeah, you're doing having your
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: last one on accident, film the next one. So yeah,
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: be prepared with memory cards, um, and just film a
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: lot of cool stuff and and think outside the box.
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: Think what's a cool point of view? Can I stand
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: behind this tree or get these you know, these flowers
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: in the shot and just trying to different things in experiment.
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: And then when you get into the room to cut it,
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: I find that it's the most random clips that I'm like,
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: that is so cool, Like the sun just hit just
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: right on this one clip, and I didn't think it
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: was that cool because I was filming was your feet.
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: So just film a lot of be real stuff because
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: when it comes to editing a story, you can't You
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: can't add a hunt with just a kill shot. So
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: get a lot of other b real footage and you
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: have a lot more to work with. I think I
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: think the things weird because I think that some people
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: kind of tend to fetishize the kill shot in that
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: if we're talking about like if you want to capture
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: the reality but hunt, you're trying in some way capture
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: the experience of it. When you're hunting, the kill shot
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: is like you don't even really log it in your
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: own mind. I mean, it's just like a damn, it's done,
- 1:14:06Speaker 1: it's gone, or you don't even know what happened. I
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: oftentimes want to look at the footage to find out
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: what the hell I just saw happen. And so I've
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: tend to be like I tend not to react, like
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: I try not to one. I try not to take
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: in a lot of media that is just like what
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: I'm trying to make, because I'm always afraid of what
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: my influences will be, or that I'll wind up responding
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: not from an honest place. I won't like create ideas
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: or perspectives from an honest place, but it will always
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: be like I'll be reacting to whatever happened to me
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: last or whatever I saw last, So going against that.
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: I have noticed this like kill shot thing right steady,
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: like playing it again and again and again, you know,
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: and it's just to me as in some ways felt
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: a little bit ugly and so in a way that
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: I have reacted to what I saw in him way,
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: maybe it's just to go against and not make such
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: a big deal out of that. I kind of like
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: it when we don't even have it, or you don't
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: even know what happened, Like you just see something that
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: happened and it's like, that's like what it seems like. Though, yeah,
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: it's like it's one of those moments in life that
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: happens so fast that it's kind of a blur. You
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: may be like I feel like I saw a puff
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: of hair, but I could be wrong. I swear I
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: saw a puff of hair, or I don't know. It
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: seemed to do this when I shot and you're trying
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: to replay the figure of if you had a good
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: hit or not, you know, and you realize the minute
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: you get uh to me you hit something and that
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: runs off. You realize how frail your recollection of what
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: just happened is because you often can't put it together.
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: You're like, I feel this, I feel that, you know,
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: or you might get lucky and you noticed it, like
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: the belly lifted, the back arched up right, and that
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: probably logged in your head just from past experiences that
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: when you see that, you know it's dead or he
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: slouches the wrong way, and for past experiences like that
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: didn't look good. You don't, you know, so that might
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: stick in your head because it triggered some memory. But
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: often you have no idea, and so I like stuff
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: that usn't just sort of like glorify this, this blood
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: splattered moment, not out of any deference to people's sensitivities,
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: but just because I feel like that's what it is.
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: That's what it's like. I agree in going back to
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: like talking about you know, being you know, the hr
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: for for hunting and showing people that you know, are
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: outside of of what we do looking in is it
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: is it's such a small just a sliver of the
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: experience and the story, right, Like that's not the ending, right,
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: I still think it's important. One thing I always want
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: to see we're out in the field, everybody does we
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: all want to see it. It is important, but like
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: like Steve is saying, like you watch some of these
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: shows and they glorify it so much, like they play
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: it like they hang their hat on it ten times,
- 1:16:51Speaker 1: slow motion reverse upside down. It's like, Okay, I got
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: that you killed that animal, and it's cool. Like as hunters,
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: we know how hard you have to work to get
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: to that point to pull the trigger. And so that's
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: kind of like the the I did it, you know,
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: But I agree, like in my eyes, like I hate
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: seeing stuff over like overplayed, and that's to kill a shot,
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: like yeah, put it in there, you need it. It's
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: like kind of like the button. Almost. I was at
- 1:17:17Speaker 1: an awards. I was at an awards ceremony one time,
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: Like I said, what it was, but I was at
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: an awards ceremony and they had a what most of
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: the band it felt like ten minutes. Maybe it wasn't
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: ten minutes a kill shot, real, dude, it just got
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: to be a bit much. But like I said, me
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: not wanting me not wanting to fetishize kill shots isn't
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: out of sensitivit or difference. Because I used to say,
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: if you look at like old guidelines for outdoor TV.
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: It would be like, oh, you can't, She'll look, she'll
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: the kill shot more than seven times in a row,
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: really know, And in the next sentence, no bloody hands,
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: no raw meat. Really you couldn't have raw flesh, right,
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: It was a guideline. It was a guy like show
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: a kill shot seven times, not more and sometimes but
- 1:18:02Speaker 1: you cannot have a host have blood on his hands.
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: So like our shows like an Avatar, I mean our
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: shows like a like a like a butcher show sometimes
- 1:18:13Speaker 1: like sometimes we'll have five minutes of butchering. So it's
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: not like that. I'm sort of it's something I'm going like,
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: oh no, I don't want to show anything unsanitary here.
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: It's just a personal thing to me that I just
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: think it's not it's just not that cool. And there's
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: also like, sure, there's people that want to see it.
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: But if I was in a business to just give
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: viewers what I thought they wanted, I'd be like, I
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: don't know, I would have gone into making like, uh,
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: lucky charms, breakfast cereal, you know. I mean, it's like
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: I'm not here to like make lucky charms, do you
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: know what I mean? It's like, sure, kids want seal
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: lots of sugar. Let's just put more sugar in there
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: and see if they like it better. It's like and somebody,
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: I'm like, sure, you probably want to see a bunch
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: of kill shot stuff. You're not gonna find it here.
- 1:18:55Speaker 1: It's like, I'm sorry, you know, I'm not gonna like
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: bow to your base in things. And in some way,
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: but again there's a level of hypocrisy because when we're out,
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: that's the only thing I ever make the guys play
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: for me, that's the only thing you want to want
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: to see. I'm like, what do you replay it? Seven times?
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: Not especially We're sitting there doing the old forty minute
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: wait for track something and I'm like, dying, let me
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: see again, let me see again, let me see the again.
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: Then we analyze, well, what happened? As a hunter, I
- 1:19:24Speaker 1: I do the same thing because there's something that happens
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: when you take a shot at an animal, and it's like,
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: almost instantly, unless that animal just takes a nose dive,
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: almost instantly, you start second guessing yourself, You start doubting yourself,
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: you start thinking of everything bad that could have possibly
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: just happened. Too. So when you rewatch it because we
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: do the same thing. I'm like, did I hit him?
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: Where to hit him? Where where was it at? And
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: did I miss something in there? And so it like
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: gives you that reassurance I did make a good shot
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: or you didn't. You know, have you ever own a
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: doll sheet? No? So it's all the stuff, like what's
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: the legal ram? Yeah, you know, you shoot a ram
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: that like most Alaska. You can shoot a ram that's
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: eight years old, which you determined by growth rings, which
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: you're very hard to see. You can shoot it RM
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: it's a double broom which means he's broken off his
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: lamb tips on each side, which is sometimes very obvious,
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: sometimes like not at all obvious. Or you can shoot
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: ram it's full curl mean degree, it's horn, which is
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: sometimes very obvious, sometimes not obvious. You shoot a ram
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: and he falls down. It is the worst moments of
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: your life, the time it takes to walk over to
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: that ram or moose with the tip tip, the worst
- 1:20:39Speaker 1: minutes of life. With a camera rolling, it's even worse
- 1:20:44Speaker 1: because you might entertain the idea of everyone just keep
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: him quiet with a camera and stuff. It's like, yeah, yeah,
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: what's at the end of the trail, because it's weird
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: you do. That's I don't know if it's human nature
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: or what, but like before you pull the trigger, you
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: were you're enough to shoot? Yeah, you were sure enough
- 1:21:02Speaker 1: to shoot. But as soon as you do, it's like, alright,
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: was that legal? Was that really what I thought? I saw? Oh,
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: man's got too many tips? I think, just a quick
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: thought on the kill shot thing, because we do strive
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: to get it, but I'm glad that it's we don't
- 1:21:21Speaker 1: have to hang our hat on it. We can make
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: a show without a kill shot, no problem. Um. But
- 1:21:26Speaker 1: for me personally, it's like so anticlimactic. I love to hunt.
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: I love the chase, and it's like it's soon even
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: if that animal just fault dirt naps, you know, which
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: is like a kind of a nasty way of saying,
- 1:21:38Speaker 1: like you just made a great shot and it just
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: fell over, you know, dead right there in his tracks.
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: But at that point, my hunt's over. You know. It's
- 1:21:44Speaker 1: like now the work starts and like I'm not out
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: chasing anymore. I'm not gonna go tomorrow morning. I'm not
- 1:21:50Speaker 1: gonna even if I go hike the same ridge line.
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: I'm not out hunting anymore. Let's have more tags in
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: my pocket. But you know what I mean, it's like,
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: even though you're you're just trying to get to that
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: moment so hard it anti climax. Even as a producer,
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: don't you just feel complete and utter relaxation after it
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: happened as a producer. It's different as a producer. But
- 1:22:08Speaker 1: that was just my personal thought tip. And this isn't
- 1:22:13Speaker 1: just for someone trying to capture their hunt, but I
- 1:22:15Speaker 1: think four people that are trying to maybe do a
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: little bit more than just capture a hunt, whether it's
- 1:22:20Speaker 1: full draw film to or you know, something like that
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: is we see a lot of like people are putting
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: too much effort into the beauty shots I think, as
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: opposed to like the basics that you were talking about.
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: And that would be my tip, Like don't worry about
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: the sliders and the jibs and the cameras flying through
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: trees and stuff like. Just work on documenting what's going on,
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: I think would be my tip. You know, and trying
- 1:22:44Speaker 1: to be the skinnerd Um. One of the guys, Leonard
- 1:22:48Speaker 1: skinnerd once said, learn how to play a guitar, then
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: get sexy. It's a good point. But I think you're honest.
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: You're referring to all a heck of a lot of
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: hunting videos that are beautifully shot, and then it's all
- 1:23:01Speaker 1: vi O just kind of they all kind of sound
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: the same, sappy, like oh, it's so beautiful to be
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: in the woods in the fall, and like, you know,
- 1:23:08Speaker 1: that's what comes in with going in without a story
- 1:23:10Speaker 1: in mind. You're just going in logging. It's like people
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: get in a situation where it is like log and
- 1:23:15Speaker 1: log and log and log footage and literally sit down
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: and go like, Okay, now I'm gonna impose some logic
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: upon this, and it winds up being Yeah, and it
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: requires on camera interaction. I think, I think what you're
- 1:23:26Speaker 1: you know, not to just shoot the beauty stuff, but
- 1:23:29Speaker 1: it requires like hosting in a sense or something, or
- 1:23:31Speaker 1: interaction between people, you know, capturing the actual people in
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: the action, not just them walking a path and not
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: them checking in, you know, because that's almost at that
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: point it's it's it's a certain script because the person's
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: been thinking about what they're gonna, you know, check in
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: with at that moment. Can't get away from checking in,
- 1:23:51Speaker 1: you can't, But you need to be getting that, and
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: you know, just always be ready for when someone just
- 1:23:56Speaker 1: starts talking and you're going, man, this is pretty cool,
- 1:23:59Speaker 1: Like I should be captured this. Yeah, I agree, And
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: i'd say if you're a camera guy, don't be you're
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: a camera guy who says I don't believe you there's
- 1:24:07Speaker 1: there's no outcoming through. Yeah, but I feel like we
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: can get away with a lot more or or certain
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: things that you really can on TV, you know what
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: I mean. Like I think a lot of times I
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: watch YouTube videos and you know, as serious as some
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: of them try to be, and there's this interaction with
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: the camera guy and the guy hunting, but that comes
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: out of that. It's great hunting TV thing. Yeah, you
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: think it happens, you know. I think in Hunting DV
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: there's a great amount of there's like a tremendous amount
- 1:24:39Speaker 1: of traditionally, a tremendous amount of interaction between the film
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: the filmer, the cameraman and the hunter. Yeah. I think
- 1:24:50Speaker 1: that there was a show for a while. The premise
- 1:24:52Speaker 1: of the show was a dude filming his wife hunting.
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: Really that was the that was the plot, you know.
- 1:24:59Speaker 1: I don't know. I've often wondered, like why is that
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: why that world? Like is it because it's is it
- 1:25:07Speaker 1: just a manifestation of it being so difficult to capture
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: the kind of stuff we're talking about, and these uncontrolled
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: environments where you don't know what's gonna happen, and like
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: there's a tremendous amount of uncertainty that you feel the
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: tension of trying to capture it. And so as a
- 1:25:22Speaker 1: way to buckle to that tension, you open it up
- 1:25:24Speaker 1: and have it be a dialogue. You'll see stuff, I mean,
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: like great shows you see like you here the guy,
- 1:25:29Speaker 1: did you get that? And they gotta be all excited
- 1:25:32Speaker 1: and I don't know why they That intrusion is so welcome.
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: The term I learned this term just the production. They
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: call it like breaking the fourth wall. So imagine like
- 1:25:42Speaker 1: if you were filming this room right here, right, we
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: got the three walls, but then this wall is where
- 1:25:46Speaker 1: the camera set up to break the fourth walls to
- 1:25:48Speaker 1: turn and see what's here and um, and we try
- 1:25:52Speaker 1: to do it uh very carefully, not very often. Yanni
- 1:25:58Speaker 1: might have been before he was even doing what he
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: was doing, like yeah, he was just a gear pack,
- 1:26:02Speaker 1: or you might have been the first wall break spotting
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: the grizzly in camp really and all of a sudden
- 1:26:09Speaker 1: it was like it's kind of like Mayber were talking
- 1:26:11Speaker 1: about being adaptive to the story, Like the camp is
- 1:26:14Speaker 1: way more tense than there are people on camera, Like
- 1:26:16Speaker 1: it's like we're filming out of this camp, but it
- 1:26:19Speaker 1: was a grizzly coming up into camp and we're like,
- 1:26:22Speaker 1: did it? And um, I think some people like it.
- 1:26:24Speaker 1: There's a sense of camaraderie there, you know, But for
- 1:26:28Speaker 1: me personally, UM, I tend to not welcome that. And
- 1:26:34Speaker 1: I don't know why. It's you know, like they do
- 1:26:38Speaker 1: it in morning shows now and then they're like like
- 1:26:40Speaker 1: the camera guys, you know, will be his birthday and
- 1:26:43Speaker 1: you know, but it's like it doesn't happen in most
- 1:26:48Speaker 1: forms of media. Have you seen that new show in
- 1:26:51Speaker 1: NBC The Island. Have you heard about this where the
- 1:26:53Speaker 1: camera guys were our buddy from town here is on
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: it Smith, But totally in that whole concept, you know, now,
- 1:27:01Speaker 1: the camera guys are the talent and the right to character.
- 1:27:05Speaker 1: He's a character and one of the shooters. But is
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: he actually shooting a scripted in character? No actual shooting,
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: so he's actually shooting so you didn't just go cast
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: people to act like camera guys. The level of cynicism
- 1:27:19Speaker 1: in some television that's we're running out to doesn't know
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: they want to talk about. It's just like um grappling
- 1:27:26Speaker 1: with Uh, you're grappling with your own relationship to the facts,
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: Like what is your obligation And it's a it's a
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: personal thing. Everyone has a side for themselves. What is
- 1:27:44Speaker 1: your obligation with reality? What is your obligation to reality
- 1:27:49Speaker 1: in what you present happening? And it's a tricky subject
- 1:27:54Speaker 1: because we're talking earlier. We filmed hundreds of hours, okay,
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: in twenty two minutes come out. You know, Um, you're
- 1:28:02Speaker 1: already making a huge judgment about what the trip was.
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: You're saying, the trip was this twenty two minutes. Um,
- 1:28:10Speaker 1: So you're already in some way like if you were
- 1:28:13Speaker 1: like absolutely loyal, faithful to reality, even the editing process
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: would be you wouldn't be able to you wouldn't do
- 1:28:21Speaker 1: because you're already, like you already putting a spin on it,
- 1:28:24Speaker 1: you know, and inevitably because of issues of time, because
- 1:28:28Speaker 1: of issues of what's of interested people, of what's palpable
- 1:28:32Speaker 1: people of just making a quality product. You end up
- 1:28:36Speaker 1: fudging things such as what days something happened on. We
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: try to we try hard to never to not mess
- 1:28:46Speaker 1: with the sort of integrity of of of something that happened,
- 1:28:51Speaker 1: but we do like Monday, nothing might happen, but some
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: moments from Monday might wind it's into Tuesday. Yeah, because
- 1:29:02Speaker 1: it's not like toying with the it's not you're not
- 1:29:06Speaker 1: like messing with you know, the pristinity of the thing
- 1:29:11Speaker 1: or you know, you just sort of making a product.
- 1:29:15Speaker 1: That's been our number one argument back. I'd say, since
- 1:29:18Speaker 1: the beginning is time and how we manage time on
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: the show, and and how it's hard to make an
- 1:29:22Speaker 1: eight day hunt where not much happened stay compelling the
- 1:29:26Speaker 1: storyline the entire time, when you could you know, fudge
- 1:29:30Speaker 1: a bid and and just show four days. So and
- 1:29:33Speaker 1: I mean you're going to like nod and like trying
- 1:29:35Speaker 1: to nod to the passage of time. Yeah, because it's
- 1:29:39Speaker 1: like we have a thing too. It's like if it
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: didn't happen on film, it didn't happen. If it didn't
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: have en on film, forget it. We're not gonna talk
- 1:29:45Speaker 1: about it. It just didn't happen. So yeah, it winds
- 1:29:51Speaker 1: up being and I always walked that line when we're
- 1:29:53Speaker 1: doing while within on travel Channel, there was tremendous pressure
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: coming from all directions to just b s bullshit, really
- 1:30:07Speaker 1: tremendous pressure. And um, now you're talking about freedom, like
- 1:30:13Speaker 1: now we have freedom from the pressure to bullshit. But
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: at the end of the day, it's also it's like
- 1:30:18Speaker 1: you're trying to like do something and to capture the
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: essence of it. Maybe to capture the essence of it,
- 1:30:22Speaker 1: you do at times mess with chronology. Yeah, you know,
- 1:30:27Speaker 1: we don't borrow dead animals from people. I hope you
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: know what I'm saying, but I don't know. I guess
- 1:30:35Speaker 1: everything we bat That's one of the primary things we've
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: battle about. It's that's a good question. I guess there's
- 1:30:40Speaker 1: a fine line, like you know, you want to tell
- 1:30:44Speaker 1: I always tell people like the realest stuff is the
- 1:30:47Speaker 1: best to me, that's what it excites me. And and uh,
- 1:30:52Speaker 1: you can see through the BS I think. And so
- 1:30:56Speaker 1: we've always, like we were talking earlier, like we never
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: go back and reshoot shots or anything like that. Yeah,
- 1:31:02Speaker 1: that's it's a hard decision. I mean, and we could
- 1:31:05Speaker 1: make a lot better quality content. If we could go
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: back and redo this kill shot or whatever, you know,
- 1:31:12Speaker 1: you could make a better, higher quality video. But for us,
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: it's about the reality of it. Like if I was
- 1:31:18Speaker 1: to do that, I would go back and watch that
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: video in a year from now and and I would
- 1:31:22Speaker 1: hate it. I would hate that video because I knew it.
- 1:31:25Speaker 1: And but like what you're saying about, maybe Monday bleeds
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: into Tuesday and Wednesday, you know, I think maybe, yeah,
- 1:31:34Speaker 1: we fall we fall into that, Like, yeah, yeah, I
- 1:31:37Speaker 1: could like, for example, the bear hunt we just put out.
- 1:31:40Speaker 1: You know, we sat in the same stand for four nights,
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: So say I needed a clip on that third night
- 1:31:47Speaker 1: of you know, Casey climbing the tree stand that I
- 1:31:49Speaker 1: didn't necessarily film on the third night, but he did
- 1:31:52Speaker 1: the exact same thing on the second night. I can
- 1:31:55Speaker 1: pull you know, three or four seconds to him climbing
- 1:31:57Speaker 1: up the tree stand, just to tie in that story
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: a little bit better. But we do try to keep
- 1:32:02Speaker 1: it as real and as raws as possible. But yeah,
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: like piecing together the story, if you have that clip
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: you need from two days before, I still think that's okay. Yeah,
- 1:32:13Speaker 1: even like what you're saying that with the bear thing,
- 1:32:14Speaker 1: Like let's say you hunted four nights. You go, let's
- 1:32:16Speaker 1: just make it all one night. But every bear we
- 1:32:18Speaker 1: saw came that night. Yeah, oh yeah, it looks like
- 1:32:21Speaker 1: an amazing yeah, which is yeah, we could have done
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: That's that's a little bit, you know, well not not
- 1:32:30Speaker 1: in our case. We saw the same five bears every night.
- 1:32:33Speaker 1: It would have been the same thing, the same five
- 1:32:35Speaker 1: bears with just different lighting. Different, but not. We try
- 1:32:38Speaker 1: to keep it real. But like things like that, I
- 1:32:40Speaker 1: don't think it takes away from the realness, but it like,
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: you know, it's like b roll footage is you can
- 1:32:45Speaker 1: kind of use that anywhere. It's just like what you're
- 1:32:47Speaker 1: talking about meeting somebody and it's so awkward. But now
- 1:32:50Speaker 1: you guys go into b roll with the v O
- 1:32:53Speaker 1: and it's not so awkward. It looks good. But but
- 1:32:55Speaker 1: like when you're shaking the hand Dot, he's not really
- 1:32:58Speaker 1: out there, you know, shooting b roll of the scenery
- 1:33:00Speaker 1: or Bob or whoever. So I don't think it takes
- 1:33:03Speaker 1: away the realness of it. But but you know, what
- 1:33:06Speaker 1: you get into is like this, we we have a
- 1:33:08Speaker 1: thing of get a concluding thought that's gonna be by
- 1:33:10Speaker 1: concluting thoughts for dragon on. Um, you know you're watching
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: wildly coyote, road running, wildly coyote. Right, you're accepting all
- 1:33:20Speaker 1: this stuff, you know, but then you see something that
- 1:33:24Speaker 1: you don't. It's just like outlandish. It's like, Okay, you're
- 1:33:28Speaker 1: already accepting that, like coyotes and roadrunners have you know
- 1:33:34Speaker 1: that they have communication and mail order from ACMEE. It's
- 1:33:37Speaker 1: like the suspension disbelief. You know. I think that anyone
- 1:33:41Speaker 1: who sits down to watch TV in this day and age,
- 1:33:45Speaker 1: um knows they're watching product. You know, you're you're watching,
- 1:33:50Speaker 1: but yes, you're watching product. You're watching something edited generally,
- 1:33:53Speaker 1: like if a guy's out alone in the woods, I
- 1:33:56Speaker 1: think that most viewers are savvy enough to be like,
- 1:33:58Speaker 1: he's not out alone in the woods. I had a
- 1:33:59Speaker 1: guy times say me, I can't believe the places you
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: go alone. It's like, well, you just I mean, you're
- 1:34:05Speaker 1: referring to a show you watch, and clearly some dudes
- 1:34:07Speaker 1: are shooting that show, you know, So there's like that
- 1:34:10Speaker 1: like we're filming you know. Um, but within that, within
- 1:34:17Speaker 1: that subtenion suspension, just believe. I do think that you
- 1:34:20Speaker 1: do have some obligation. There's still obligations to the viewer.
- 1:34:26Speaker 1: Some people live free of that, and those people are
- 1:34:28Speaker 1: going to reality television. Some people, um, don't live free
- 1:34:33Speaker 1: of that and have that that guilt or that problem
- 1:34:36Speaker 1: or whatever's going on in their head, or they feel
- 1:34:38Speaker 1: some fidelity to reality. Um. I struggle with it every
- 1:34:44Speaker 1: day and I've tended to over time, had to to
- 1:34:49Speaker 1: feel that fidelity grow, you know, the interest in the
- 1:34:54Speaker 1: truth to increase rather than diminish. Um. That's Michael Cluton thought. Yeah.
- 1:35:01Speaker 1: By concluding thought is a challenge to the greater hunting
- 1:35:05Speaker 1: community to step up the collective game of the quality
- 1:35:09Speaker 1: of their video and storytelling ability, because I think it
- 1:35:14Speaker 1: says a lot to the wider world. Um, you know
- 1:35:17Speaker 1: what the hunting story is if it if it's told
- 1:35:21Speaker 1: really terribly with bad camera working bad stories. I I
- 1:35:26Speaker 1: challenge everybody to learn the craft and get real good
- 1:35:29Speaker 1: and make hunting something that doesn't look like a bunch
- 1:35:33Speaker 1: of dorks in the woods that don't know what they're doing.
- 1:35:35Speaker 1: That it's as beautiful as it is. Right. Yeah, I
- 1:35:40Speaker 1: guess I'll chime in with with what Tody's saying is
- 1:35:43Speaker 1: not only uh, you know, good quality you know, tells
- 1:35:47Speaker 1: a good story, but honesty, like we've been talking about,
- 1:35:50Speaker 1: and I really feel like a huge uh um supporter
- 1:35:55Speaker 1: of people filming things that open the eyes of maybe
- 1:36:03Speaker 1: non hunters and people that maybe don't know exactly what
- 1:36:07Speaker 1: we do and capture those moments and share them because
- 1:36:10Speaker 1: the reason most people don't enjoy what we do and
- 1:36:13Speaker 1: don't believe in in hunting is because they're uneducated and
- 1:36:16Speaker 1: they just don't understand. And by us filming what we
- 1:36:19Speaker 1: do and telling the on its true story, it's open.
- 1:36:22Speaker 1: It's really opened their eyes. And those are the comments
- 1:36:24Speaker 1: I love reading more than anything. Is the people that
- 1:36:27Speaker 1: we're anti hunters were vegetarians that they hated hunting before
- 1:36:31Speaker 1: and they watched our first video on their hooked and
- 1:36:33Speaker 1: they might not ever become hunters, but they understand what
- 1:36:35Speaker 1: we do know and that's through good storytelling. And I
- 1:36:38Speaker 1: want to say good quality content, which you know, we
- 1:36:42Speaker 1: we can get away with not everything being perfect on YouTube,
- 1:36:45Speaker 1: but I mean we do a really good job telling
- 1:36:48Speaker 1: telling an honest story, I think yeah, And I think
- 1:36:50Speaker 1: that's why a lot of people like watching the channel,
- 1:36:53Speaker 1: just because of the realness and just showing people how
- 1:36:57Speaker 1: much passion we have for we do I mean, how
- 1:37:01Speaker 1: much respect we have for the animals and the land
- 1:37:04Speaker 1: they live in, and kind of sending that message through
- 1:37:06Speaker 1: our videos is one thing that we like to do
- 1:37:10Speaker 1: is just showing that we're out there having fun. This
- 1:37:12Speaker 1: is something that we love and uh yeah, I don't know,
- 1:37:17Speaker 1: it's just fun to share it with people. I want
- 1:37:20Speaker 1: to change my concluding thought that to be that everyone
- 1:37:22Speaker 1: should needs to go buy one of Yanni's Hunt to
- 1:37:24Speaker 1: Eat T shirts. No, he's something I get to change
- 1:37:26Speaker 1: mind because I was gonna finally have to plug my
- 1:37:28Speaker 1: own ship. But you guys want to Hunt to Eat
- 1:37:31Speaker 1: T shirt? I don't. But honestly, you know, hey, by
- 1:37:37Speaker 1: the way, I don't know. We don't know when this
- 1:37:38Speaker 1: episode will air. But today we have Montana Hunt Eat
- 1:37:42Speaker 1: shirts live. You can go buy them, which is apropos
- 1:37:45Speaker 1: to the fact that we're here in Montana. Is not
- 1:37:49Speaker 1: a paid sponsor, not at all. I buy a shirt today,
- 1:37:53Speaker 1: it will be a paid sponsor. No, I'm staying. It's
- 1:37:57Speaker 1: like I'm not being bought and sold here. Okay, I
- 1:38:00Speaker 1: get I want to get squat making sure that Hearts
- 1:38:07Speaker 1: is a thriving T shirt business. And that Yanni becomes
- 1:38:09Speaker 1: a T shirt magnate that you children will read about,
- 1:38:12Speaker 1: that your children will watch videos about on YouTube. There
- 1:38:14Speaker 1: you go. I've seen that shirt floating around social media.
- 1:38:18Speaker 1: I love that shirt doing on you should do an
- 1:38:19Speaker 1: unboxing video your shirt. Yeah, it comes in plastic wrap.
- 1:38:24Speaker 1: Let's open the bag. Yet you got to change it
- 1:38:26Speaker 1: up so you're not like every other unboxed like unboxed
- 1:38:29Speaker 1: with your feet, and then it will be a little
- 1:38:31Speaker 1: bit different than the rest of Oh my gosh with
- 1:38:36Speaker 1: a double rainbow unboxing shirt. That's a viral YouTube video.
- 1:38:39Speaker 1: Now I want you to you get too concluding thoughts
- 1:38:41Speaker 1: because I want to hear the plug you're going to
- 1:38:43Speaker 1: give this game it? Man, I got Montana hunting really
- 1:38:47Speaker 1: gonna use your concluding thoughts and plug T shirt business?
- 1:38:50Speaker 1: Of course not. Oh no, I didn't get to talk
- 1:38:53Speaker 1: about the difference between hunting alone and hunting you know,
- 1:38:57Speaker 1: with the camera crew. So I was just gonna touch
- 1:38:58Speaker 1: on that because it never got around to me earlier.
- 1:39:01Speaker 1: Either way, he wears a hunts Eat T shirt, especially
- 1:39:04Speaker 1: during podcasts. It's a good reminder. Um, I relish the quiet.
- 1:39:11Speaker 1: We still get it because we do a good job.
- 1:39:12Speaker 1: I think of remembering too. That's why we're out there,
- 1:39:15Speaker 1: you know, hunting and to get those quiet moments. And
- 1:39:18Speaker 1: I think when everybody sees our upcoming Cusier episode, that's
- 1:39:21Speaker 1: going to really come through because we just like hung
- 1:39:23Speaker 1: out in the quiet for four days and enjoyed that.
- 1:39:25Speaker 1: But I always look forward to going out on my
- 1:39:28Speaker 1: own hunts without you know, the crew, just because I
- 1:39:32Speaker 1: like just sitting there and just not not talking to anybody,
- 1:39:35Speaker 1: just listening to the birds and then wind. And you've
- 1:39:39Speaker 1: sacrificed a lot of that being in the line of
- 1:39:43Speaker 1: work that we're talking about here, what you guided a lot,
- 1:39:45Speaker 1: and so guiding is probably not that quiet. But you've
- 1:39:51Speaker 1: sacrificed a lot of your what would be alone time
- 1:39:54Speaker 1: in the woods in order to get in a way
- 1:39:57Speaker 1: to get more time in the woods. But it's a
- 1:39:59Speaker 1: different time, you know. It's been a good, good sacrifice.
- 1:40:05Speaker 1: So that count is my concluding thought. Look at a
- 1:40:08Speaker 1: concluding thought. That doesn't count. Oh that's good, I missed
- 1:40:12Speaker 1: my quiet haunts. Well that's all right, buy one of
- 1:40:17Speaker 1: Johnnie shirts he misses his quiet haunts. Um casey do
- 1:40:22Speaker 1: a final like give get everybody run down? How to
