- 0:11I'm your host, Randy Black, and this is the podcast where
- 0:15I just share my thoughts on whatever
- 0:17happens to come across my brain.
- 0:20Today,
- 0:22we're gonna dive deep into a topic that touches the heartbeat of the church today and and challenges every believer,
- 0:28and that's the topic of apostasy.
- 0:31What is it? How it shows up in the modern church,
- 0:35and how we as Christians
- 0:37should look at it and what we should do about it.
- 0:40Apostasy is not a new concept.
- 0:43The apostle Paul warned the early church that that day shall not come except there came a come a falling away first,
- 0:52referring to the great apostasy preceding the return of Christ.
- 0:56Second Thessalonians chapter two verse three makes it clear, Let no man deceive you by any means,
- 1:02and then identifies this falling away as a very real
- 1:07spiritual condition.
- 1:09So what exactly is apostasy?
- 1:13In the simplest
- 1:14biblical sense,
- 1:16apostasy means a falling away, a turning away from the truth of Christ after once embracing it.
- 1:23It's not merely doubt or struggle. It's a turning away from loyalty
- 1:27to Jesus Christ
- 1:29and the truths of the scripture in the Bible.
- 1:33Let's start by
- 1:35understanding or looking at how apostasy manifests
- 1:38in the modern church, what we see today.
- 1:41The first is moral relativism.
- 1:44In our culture today, there's been a shift toward personal opinion
- 1:48over absolute truth.
- 1:50Where Scripture says there's right and wrong,
- 1:52many are tempted to believe that truth is what feels right or what makes them comfortable.
- 1:59Isaiah chapter five verse 20 warns us,
- 2:03woe unto them that call evil good and good evil,
- 2:07a picture of a society and and even segments of the church confusing
- 2:12moral absolutes.
- 2:14The second is the influence of media and entertainment.
- 2:18Popular culture bombards us daily with messages that are that are contrary to biblical views.
- 2:24The apostle Paul calls believers,
- 2:26be not conformed to this world, but be ye transformed
- 2:30in Romans chapter 12 verse two.
- 2:33Yet many Christians
- 2:35absorb secular worldviews uncritically,
- 2:38blurring the line between biblical truth and cultural acceptance.
- 2:44Third is the doctrinal compromise.
- 2:47Some churches
- 2:49emphasize acceptance
- 2:50and relevance
- 2:52so much that they soften
- 2:54or even abandon clear biblical
- 2:56teachings out there in the Bible.
- 2:59Paul cautions against this in Galatians chapter one verses six through nine. This is where he rebukes believers for turning to another gospel.
- 3:07True Christianity
- 3:09isn't a brand that you tweak
- 3:11to fit the culture.
- 3:14Fourth is the secularism's
- 3:16growing grip that we see.
- 3:19Many believers today are are less committed to regular worship or discipleship.
- 3:24Hebrews chapter 10 verse 25
- 3:27exhorts the church to not forsake the assembling of ourselves together,
- 3:31yet actual attendance and genuine
- 3:34engagement with church life are declining.
- 3:38All these trends show that apostasy
- 3:40isn't just a theological idea.
- 3:43It's tangible in how faith is lived, taught, and sometimes shelved in modern Christianity.
- 3:51Now let's take a minute to talk about the consequences of this.
- 3:56When Christians and
- 3:58churches drift from biblical
- 4:00truth,
- 4:01moral decay increases all around us.
- 4:05Solomon says in Proverbs 14 verse 34,
- 4:08Righteousness
- 4:09exalteth a nation,
- 4:11but sin is a reproach to any people.
- 4:15As biblical authority fades,
- 4:18society's moral compass weakens.
- 4:21We also see the church losing influence and credibility.
- 4:25Fewer steadfast witnesses make it harder for Christianity to speak prophetically
- 4:30and into moral and cultural issues,
- 4:33not because the gospel lacks power,
- 4:35but because the consistent witness of the church has been weakened.
- 4:40And perhaps most heartbreaking in all this is spiritual confusion.
- 4:43People may identify as spiritual without grounding in Scripture or or commitment to Christ.
- 4:51First John chapter two verse 19 says, of those who depart from Christ,
- 4:57they went out from us,
- 4:59but they were not of us,
- 5:01illustrating the danger of superficial faith that can fade under pressure or under deception.
- 5:09To understand apostasy biblically,
- 5:11we have to see how scripture speaks about it.
- 5:15The New Testament paints apostasy as a serious
- 5:18turning away from the faith,
- 5:20not a casual disagreement, but a rebellion of the heart
- 5:24against God's truth.
- 5:26The Greek word apostasia
- 5:28literally
- 5:29means to stand away or to turn away.
- 5:32The Bible uses this idea to describe true believers who abandoned the faith they once embraced.
- 5:39Paul's warnings like in second Timothy four
- 5:43verses three and four describe people who will not endure sound doctrine and instead seek teachers who tell them what they want to hear,
- 5:51a dangerous trajectory away from biblical truth.
- 5:55Apostasy
- 5:57wasn't merely a future event in Paul's mind.
- 6:00It's a present spiritual condition whenever believers or churches substitute cultural preferences
- 6:06for God's unchanging truth.
- 6:10So how should we as believers respond to this?
- 6:15First,
- 6:15strengthen our doctrinal teaching.
- 6:18The church must be anchored in sound, unaltered biblical teaching that equips believers to recognize truth and resist compromise.
- 6:25A well grounded congregation
- 6:28is less likely to drift away.
- 6:31Second is to revive discipleship
- 6:33and evangelism.
- 6:34Christianity
- 6:35isn't a spectator sport.
- 6:38Jesus' Great Commission in Matthew 28 verses nineteen and twenty calls believers to teach and make disciples,
- 6:44not just gather but grow in faith.
- 6:47Third, we need to engage culture wisely.
- 6:51Christians are called to live in the world but not be of it.
- 6:55As Jesus prayed in John chapter 17 verse 15, we remain
- 7:00in the world while God protects us from the evil one.
- 7:04This means being salt and light without surrendering
- 7:07truth.
- 7:10Before we close, let's reflect personally on this.
- 7:14Have you compromised
- 7:15truth for comfort or for acceptance?
- 7:19Do you spend time daily in Scripture to discern truth from drift?
- 7:25Are you living in a way that points others to Christ even when culture says otherwise?
- 7:32These aren't easy questions,
- 7:34but they matter for every single believer.
- 7:39Apostasy in the modern church is real,
- 7:42but the church
- 7:43is not without hope. By returning to the Scriptures,
- 7:47committing to discipleship,
- 7:49and living out genuine faith, Christians can stand firm in truth.
- 7:54Jude reminds us to earnestly
- 7:56contend for the faith which was once delivered under the saints.
- 8:01Let that be our charge and our prayer today.
