Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome everybody to Patriots Draft Countdown, presented by Bud Light.
- 0:03Speaker 1: We are coming to you from the twenty twenty six
- 0:05Speaker 1: scouting Combine here in Indianapolis, and we're getting things started.
- 0:09Speaker 1: I can later look Cucier Weather. Sure, if you're in
- 0:12Speaker 1: New England you experienced some of that, but we are here.
- 0:14Speaker 1: This is my six combine. Very excited and especially this year.
- 0:18Speaker 1: We got to talk to Mike Rabel today. I have
- 0:20Speaker 1: to talk to some other people as well. We'll have
- 0:22Speaker 1: those interviews coming up for you, but have first things first.
- 0:25Speaker 1: Today was a big day for me because it was
- 0:27Speaker 1: the defensive front seven. It's the linebackers, it's the defensive tackles,
- 0:30Speaker 1: it's the edges, all positions of varying needs, especially edge though,
- 0:34Speaker 1: and I got to start off the top. We heard
- 0:36Speaker 1: our Mason Thomas's name mentioned a couple of times. He's
- 0:39Speaker 1: a guy that plays with that Mike Frabele style hair
- 0:41Speaker 1: on fire balls to the wall. Not only him, but
- 0:45Speaker 1: there's a number of guys Key mesidor another one that
- 0:47Speaker 1: it pops up. But some options potentially for the Patriots
- 0:51Speaker 1: in this edge class at the end of the first round.
- 0:53Speaker 2: Yeah, we've talked to multiple people now here at the
- 0:56Speaker 2: Combine on the Patriots organization, whether it's Eliot Wolf like Rabel,
- 1:01Speaker 2: they all have pointed to this edge class as a
- 1:04Speaker 2: position of depth and strength in this draft class.
- 1:06Speaker 3: So that seems to be kind of the buzz of the.
- 1:09Speaker 2: Combine right now is how many different edge rushers there are,
- 1:13Speaker 2: maybe some saying as many as twenty in the top
- 1:16Speaker 2: one hundred could go in this draft.
- 1:18Speaker 3: So it's a big number.
- 1:19Speaker 2: And I think the two parts of that though, are
- 1:23Speaker 2: it's a flavors thing, right, you know, which ice cream
- 1:25Speaker 2: flavor is it that you want in terms of the
- 1:27Speaker 2: skill sets, but also when is the best time to
- 1:30Speaker 2: pounce on one of those guys because there is so
- 1:33Speaker 2: much depth. Do you wait till day two of the
- 1:35Speaker 2: draft and let it kind of fall to you or
- 1:37Speaker 2: do you take a player up there at thirty one?
- 1:39Speaker 2: So there's a bunch of different options. You know, I'll
- 1:42Speaker 2: just throw cash as Howl in there as well from
- 1:44Speaker 2: Texas A and m who you know, we might do
- 1:47Speaker 2: the short arms thing again with.
- 1:48Speaker 3: Him, so yay lucky us.
- 1:51Speaker 2: But yeah, I know there's so many different things that
- 1:54Speaker 2: go into it in terms of play style, body type
- 1:56Speaker 2: that could make an edge rusher, a Patriot edge rusher,
- 2:00Speaker 2: but not a people next to us. The chief said, Dressers,
- 2:02Speaker 2: the Raiders. You know, everybody's got a different kind of thing.
- 2:05Speaker 4: Yeah, Raiders, that drusher man.
- 2:07Speaker 5: We could work out a deal.
- 2:08Speaker 3: Yeah, we've been trying to that. I don't know their.
- 2:10Speaker 1: Content can make that deal, but we'll we'll, we'll get
- 2:13Speaker 1: to work on that. So Mike Vrabel did take the
- 2:15Speaker 1: to the podium today as well. We got to chance
- 2:18Speaker 1: to talk to him. But some of the things that
- 2:19Speaker 1: stood out from the podium portion, because you guys will
- 2:21Speaker 1: see our interview with him in a second. Two things
- 2:23Speaker 1: I want to highlight. Ev One was that and it's
- 2:26Speaker 1: something I kind of thought too. Was the tight end class.
- 2:28Speaker 1: And we know Mike Rabel played a little tight end,
- 2:30Speaker 1: so maybe he's got an eye for those tight ends.
- 2:32Speaker 1: But it's position to need. You know, Austin Hooper was
- 2:34Speaker 1: a free agent hunter. Henry getting up there a little bit.
- 2:37Speaker 1: Love to add some you know, young athleticism there. I
- 2:40Speaker 1: know Kenyan Sadik from Oregon is a top that list.
- 2:42Speaker 1: He's hyper athletic and a really intriguing player for me.
- 2:45Speaker 1: Maybe he gets through the cracks, but I also look
- 2:47Speaker 1: at guys like Max Claire from Ohio State, like some
- 2:49Speaker 1: of these lower end crossbecks.
- 2:52Speaker 4: I don't will call him lower and they're more mid round,
- 2:53Speaker 4: but it seems like those guys stood out to Rabel two.
- 2:56Speaker 1: I just listen to what he says, and when he
- 2:58Speaker 1: points in a direction, I'm going to look even closer
- 3:00Speaker 1: tight end Cluss Now.
- 3:01Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely, I mean that definitely stood out to me.
- 3:03Speaker 2: And I think that even talking to Elliot Wolf yesterday too,
- 3:06Speaker 2: just putting them together, a lot of talk about, well,
- 3:10Speaker 2: Morgan Moses is a great player, but he's thirty five.
- 3:13Speaker 2: I assume they kind of feel the same way about
- 3:14Speaker 2: Hunter Henry. Great player, but gonna be thirty two years
- 3:17Speaker 2: old next season. So that position, it's not necessarily that
- 3:21Speaker 2: they need a starter at that position right away, but
- 3:24Speaker 2: they need to start thinking about the next chapter at
- 3:27Speaker 2: tight end. And also I would say, like you mentioned,
- 3:30Speaker 2: maybe a little bit more youth in the legs, you know,
- 3:32Speaker 2: a little bit more explosiveness, a little bit more juice.
- 3:35Speaker 2: The one thing that I really wonder, kind of like
- 3:37Speaker 2: the edge Rusher conversation, is how much do they prioritize
- 3:41Speaker 2: upgrading inline blocking versus receiving upside because in this draft
- 3:46Speaker 2: there are a pretty good amount in that let's call
- 3:50Speaker 2: it sixty to one fifty range. There's gonna be a
- 3:52Speaker 2: cluster of tight ends that's going to go in that
- 3:55Speaker 2: range of the draft. It's kind of like Sadik at
- 3:57Speaker 2: the top, big gap and then everybody. But once everybody
- 4:01Speaker 2: else starts going, there's going to be a run, and
- 4:03Speaker 2: you have to get in on the run. When you
- 4:06Speaker 2: look at that group, it's obviously not going to be
- 4:10Speaker 2: a lot of like two way players like a Tyler
- 4:13Speaker 2: Warren that can do everything right. If he did, he'd
- 4:15Speaker 2: be going in the first round. So it's receiving types
- 4:19Speaker 2: you mentioned, you know, like a Max Claire or Eli
- 4:22Speaker 2: Stower is from Vanderbilt or Oscar delt from Georgia. Two
- 4:27Speaker 2: you know, six, three, two forty five guys that catch
- 4:30Speaker 2: the football. Then you have like blocking tight ends that
- 4:33Speaker 2: don't really catch the football but can really block. And
- 4:35Speaker 2: so where do the Patriots prioritize that? I think it's
- 4:38Speaker 2: going to be fascinating because, you know, maybe that depth
- 4:41Speaker 2: that Mike Rabel pointed to, maybe they're thinking doubled it,
- 4:45Speaker 2: you know, and get a both, you know, get one
- 4:47Speaker 2: of each.
- 4:47Speaker 3: Yeah, you know that sort of thing as well.
- 4:49Speaker 1: Yeah, the other thing that that stood out to me
- 4:50Speaker 1: for from Vrabel at the podium was just challenging his
- 4:53Speaker 1: coaches to you know, continue to evolve and yeah, find
- 4:55Speaker 1: new things.
- 4:57Speaker 4: It's something I love.
- 4:57Speaker 1: I Mean the comp we've kind of talked about on
- 4:59Speaker 1: Patriots Filtered is when the O three Patriots went out
- 5:01Speaker 1: and got Corey Dillon and you know, continue to change
- 5:04Speaker 1: the equation and improve and not just be Oh, the
- 5:06Speaker 1: O three Patriots are back, we got a Saint. It's
- 5:09Speaker 1: a different team. We all look at the schedule. We
- 5:11Speaker 1: know it's going to be a tougher road. You know,
- 5:13Speaker 1: we talked of.
- 5:13Speaker 4: Rabel, we mentioned going to Seattle.
- 5:15Speaker 1: I mean, it's it's on everybody's mind that it's going
- 5:17Speaker 1: to be a tougher task this year. But I'm very
- 5:19Speaker 1: curious to see what the coaches might come back with.
- 5:21Speaker 1: And I know it's something that we've talked plenty about
- 5:24Speaker 1: looking for innovation, ways to get different. Fabele pointed to
- 5:26Speaker 1: the college game, the high school game. Something maybe they
- 5:28Speaker 1: can bring up anything, maybe the.
- 5:30Speaker 2: Pops in mind, maybe that's an off the record conversation
- 5:34Speaker 2: we can have where I'm like, hey, like just tell me, Like, well,
- 5:36Speaker 2: you're gonna know. But I think the biggest thing that
- 5:40Speaker 2: stood out to me, because we had a local media
- 5:43Speaker 2: scrum with him just now that he also did that.
- 5:46Speaker 2: I'm sure we'll write about and everything like that, but
- 5:49Speaker 2: he said that one of the things that they have
- 5:52Speaker 2: talked about is the amount of disguise that defenses are
- 5:56Speaker 2: playing with nowadays. And I think it's important to mention
- 5:59Speaker 2: it's not just coverage disguise. It's also pass rush disguise.
- 6:03Speaker 2: You know, you have guys up at the line of
- 6:04Speaker 2: scrimmage and you don't know who's dropping and who's coming,
- 6:07Speaker 2: and how that can mess with protections is also a
- 6:10Speaker 2: part of disguise, and I think we often think about
- 6:13Speaker 2: it as coverage disguise, but there's also now a ton
- 6:16Speaker 2: of pass rush disguise too, and there's better ways to
- 6:19Speaker 2: maybe handle that. I think is something that they're gonna
- 6:22Speaker 2: try to look into now. He did say. Rabel did say, look,
- 6:26Speaker 2: we're not gonna reinvent the whole offense here. We're talking
- 6:29Speaker 2: about making a few tweaks here and there, maybe one
- 6:32Speaker 2: or two ideas, not ten. But at the same time
- 6:36Speaker 2: that that did stand out to him and stood out
- 6:38Speaker 2: to I think everybody, especially with Seattle's defense, they just
- 6:41Speaker 2: are sending and dropping and doing things from all different directions,
- 6:45Speaker 2: and I think the Patriots need to get better at
- 6:47Speaker 2: handling those things.
- 6:48Speaker 1: Yeah, so a whole lot of Mike Fable today. Let's
- 6:50Speaker 1: not waste any more time. Let's jump right into our
- 6:52Speaker 1: interview with him. Here's the sit down right now. All right,
- 6:56Speaker 1: Patriots said coach. Mike Frable joins us. Now, coach, thanks
- 6:58Speaker 1: for joining us, and you're.
- 6:59Speaker 4: Doing carwash here.
- 7:01Speaker 1: You know, Evan and I we don't get up early
- 7:02Speaker 1: enough to talk to you during the season. I think
- 7:04Speaker 1: the last time we talked to you was here at
- 7:06Speaker 1: the combine. Have you had a chance to process ask questions?
- 7:09Speaker 5: I do. I do a press conference twice a week.
- 7:13Speaker 5: You're free to ask questions there.
- 7:15Speaker 4: We don't get you one on one like this though.
- 7:16Speaker 4: But have you had a chance to process this last
- 7:18Speaker 4: year yet?
- 7:20Speaker 6: I mean probably not. You know, I just keep it
- 7:23Speaker 6: moving and figure out what we need to do next.
- 7:26Speaker 6: I think that's what we've done since we since we
- 7:28Speaker 6: started a little over a year ago. So the idea
- 7:30Speaker 6: is just kind of figure out what we need to
- 7:32Speaker 6: do for the team and and go about doing it.
- 7:35Speaker 4: Commind help with that. It all get and then something
- 7:37Speaker 4: new nothing.
- 7:37Speaker 6: Yeah, because everybody's here, you know, I mean we have
- 7:40Speaker 6: you know, most of our staff here and you know,
- 7:42Speaker 6: the personnel staff and uh some of the coaches have
- 7:45Speaker 6: come in. We're excited about going to dinner to night
- 7:47Speaker 6: before the meeting, so you know, Miss Nancy Nancy Meyer
- 7:51Speaker 6: sets that up and that'll be a great thing here
- 7:53Speaker 6: tonight that we'll be able to do. I have great
- 7:55Speaker 6: dinner with everybody that's in and then we'll we'll head
- 7:58Speaker 6: over to h to the interviews.
- 8:00Speaker 3: Are you saying almost guy Prime forty.
- 8:02Speaker 5: Seven, I'm a stake guy. I don't discriminate.
- 8:05Speaker 6: Cocktails all got spicy horse sauce, and I don't discriminate.
- 8:09Speaker 5: All right, take a steak.
- 8:10Speaker 2: Well, what's the last couple of weeks looked like for
- 8:13Speaker 2: you personally? Just obviously coming off the Super Bowl?
- 8:15Speaker 5: Wow?
- 8:16Speaker 6: I mean you try to visit with the players and
- 8:18Speaker 6: coaches and try to figure out what the staff needs
- 8:21Speaker 6: and the adjustments that you make with the staff, and
- 8:25Speaker 6: you know, try to take a little bit of time,
- 8:27Speaker 6: you know, went skiing with Carter, went scanning for three
- 8:30Speaker 6: days with him and that was enough.
- 8:32Speaker 5: I got more injuries.
- 8:33Speaker 6: No, no injuries, but you know, just try to make
- 8:36Speaker 6: some time for for family, but also make time for
- 8:39Speaker 6: for work in this football team.
- 8:42Speaker 1: No, you got to start over at the beginning every year.
- 8:44Speaker 1: But is there some things that you can take from
- 8:46Speaker 1: that season?
- 8:47Speaker 6: You think the stat and I don't know if you
- 8:48Speaker 6: it's starting over from the beginning, you know what I mean.
- 8:51Speaker 6: I think you have to start over from you know,
- 8:53Speaker 6: the things that you feel really really confident about moving
- 8:57Speaker 6: forward and that you want to build with and kind
- 8:59Speaker 6: of go from there and then you know, add the
- 9:02Speaker 6: pieces and look to the draft and look to free agency,
- 9:05Speaker 6: and you know, who can you develop and what can
- 9:08Speaker 6: you get out of you know, somebody else that maybe
- 9:10Speaker 6: he didn't think that you had in him, or he
- 9:12Speaker 6: didn't think he had in himself, and you know, but
- 9:15Speaker 6: those will be things that we'll do here moving forward,
- 9:17Speaker 6: just with our current team and then what it looks
- 9:19Speaker 6: like going forward with the pieces that we had.
- 9:21Speaker 2: I'll hated to just ask you a little bit about
- 9:23Speaker 2: the staff obviously, Zach, you know, being promoted here defensive coordinator,
- 9:27Speaker 2: Just what did you see as an assistant that you
- 9:30Speaker 2: thought he could call players, he'd be a good Yeah.
- 9:32Speaker 6: I just thought, you know, a very intelligent football coach
- 9:36Speaker 6: at an offensive background that when he came to Tennessee
- 9:40Speaker 6: provided us with a lot of information when we were
- 9:43Speaker 6: in those defensive meetium rooms on hey, this is what
- 9:46Speaker 6: they're trying to do, this is what bothers or maybe
- 9:49Speaker 6: forces them to do something differently. And so that's how
- 9:52Speaker 6: his role started, and then he progressed to it to
- 9:55Speaker 6: a defensive coach, handled our red zone installation and the
- 10:01Speaker 6: presentation and the conversations, and you continue to grow and
- 10:06Speaker 6: then when you know we got here, you know, it
- 10:08Speaker 6: just was obvious from an early time when when you
- 10:11Speaker 6: know Big T was, you know, working through some stuff
- 10:14Speaker 6: that Zach was capable of leading and also improved.
- 10:19Speaker 4: You know, each and every week you've been a defensive coordinator.
- 10:22Speaker 1: What are the biggest challenge of having I mean, can
- 10:24Speaker 1: you imagine yourself jumping into that job kind of unexpectedly?
- 10:27Speaker 5: Well, I think as a.
- 10:28Speaker 6: Position coach, you're always thinking about that. And I think
- 10:31Speaker 6: that when you try to think about that, like, hey,
- 10:33Speaker 6: what what I call here?
- 10:34Speaker 5: What adjustment?
- 10:35Speaker 6: Or what do we have to be careful of here?
- 10:38Speaker 6: You're always just trying to train and sharpen and think
- 10:41Speaker 6: about that. Now, whether that matches up or marries up
- 10:43Speaker 6: with the with the play caller, that that may not
- 10:47Speaker 6: always happen, but you're always in your head thinking about
- 10:50Speaker 6: That's the way that you have to look at it,
- 10:52Speaker 6: just as the same way as you're sitting there and
- 10:54Speaker 6: you're thinking about, Hey, this is what the head coach
- 10:56Speaker 6: wants to do.
- 10:57Speaker 5: Is this what I would do? And I'm going to.
- 10:59Speaker 6: Support this as a U as a position coach or
- 11:01Speaker 6: a coordinator, I'm gonna I'm gonna support it. But is
- 11:04Speaker 6: this what I would do? Most of the time it is.
- 11:06Speaker 6: Sometimes it's it looks a little different. So when you
- 11:08Speaker 6: get your opportunity, you know you can do those things.
- 11:11Speaker 2: When it comes to Terrell, you you mentioned at the
- 11:12Speaker 2: podium just a few minutes ago that you have a
- 11:14Speaker 2: vision for his role. Can you just share any insight
- 11:17Speaker 2: into what that vision might be?
- 11:19Speaker 6: Again, it's it's going to be a strong role on
- 11:21Speaker 6: the defense, like he is going to act as a
- 11:24Speaker 6: as a coordinator and presenting information and ideas and you know,
- 11:28Speaker 6: bringing us the front and making sure that we're we're
- 11:31Speaker 6: really solid across the front from our edges to the interior.
- 11:35Speaker 6: We've got some guys inside that I think can continue
- 11:37Speaker 6: to develop and grow, whether that's Milk or Christian or
- 11:43Speaker 6: anybody else. I think that those guys can continue to
- 11:45Speaker 6: get better. And Terrell's going to have a large hand
- 11:48Speaker 6: in that. But he's also going to be able to
- 11:50Speaker 6: help me, uh and extend, you know, being an extension
- 11:54Speaker 6: of me throughout our program.
- 11:56Speaker 1: I know you haven't jumped in too much on the
- 11:58Speaker 1: draft yet, but do you enjoy that process, gravitate towards
- 12:01Speaker 1: maybe position you played or like.
- 12:03Speaker 4: Do you like it? Like do you have fun with
- 12:04Speaker 4: and find these kids?
- 12:05Speaker 6: And it's important. I mean, the draft is you know,
- 12:10Speaker 6: has to be the cornerstone of of your you know
- 12:14Speaker 6: your team, and it's it's the youth, and you put
- 12:19Speaker 6: a lot of time into these guys. You spend a
- 12:21Speaker 6: lot of time with the draft guys and then the
- 12:23Speaker 6: free agents if you don't know something about them, you know.
- 12:25Speaker 5: Sometimes you don't know what what what you're getting. But
- 12:29Speaker 5: we have a.
- 12:29Speaker 6: Lot of knowledge of these guys, and then you're excited
- 12:31Speaker 6: when you're able to get them, and you know, whether
- 12:34Speaker 6: you trade up for them, they they're there when you pick.
- 12:36Speaker 5: Or you know, you trade back in the guy's there.
- 12:39Speaker 6: So you know, we have to we have to continue
- 12:41Speaker 6: to draft well and we have to continue to develop
- 12:44Speaker 6: because that's the only way that you can withstain or
- 12:47Speaker 6: sustain the success that we envision.
- 12:50Speaker 2: The one of the players I want to ask you
- 12:52Speaker 2: about on your own team is Christians Sure has up
- 12:55Speaker 2: for this extension maybe this offseason.
- 12:58Speaker 3: What do you just you in him? And do you
- 13:01Speaker 3: want to make an extension happen?
- 13:03Speaker 5: Well, we want to go.
- 13:04Speaker 6: Yeah, we we obviously want to move forward with all
- 13:06Speaker 6: our best players. I think that that's something that I
- 13:08Speaker 6: would want. And I know that you know, Elliott once
- 13:13Speaker 6: and Ryan once and Stretched once and Robert and Jonathan
- 13:15Speaker 6: and our fans want they want our best players to
- 13:18Speaker 6: be on our team as long as they're you know,
- 13:20Speaker 6: really good players. Uh again, I thought he got better.
- 13:24Speaker 6: I thought he played his best football down the stretch
- 13:26Speaker 6: and I thought that that was good to see. I
- 13:30Speaker 6: talked about that and and yeah, that was something that
- 13:32Speaker 6: Gonzo and I, you know, would would talk about and share.
- 13:36Speaker 5: And you know he is, he's a talented player.
- 13:40Speaker 6: And if I pushed him and asked him if he
- 13:44Speaker 6: he wants to strive to be a captain, and he
- 13:46Speaker 6: said that he does, and I'm going to help him
- 13:48Speaker 6: try to get there. And I want him to to
- 13:50Speaker 6: come back with that mindset of not only being an
- 13:53Speaker 6: elite player, but also being an elite leader and an
- 13:56Speaker 6: elite teammate, which he is an elite teammate, but you know,
- 13:59Speaker 6: being able to push these guys and communicate and use
- 14:02Speaker 6: his intelligence and what he sees on the field be
- 14:06Speaker 6: able to help other guys.
- 14:08Speaker 1: Just one more for me, Mike. I thought it was
- 14:09Speaker 1: really interesting at the podium. He said, you're challenging your
- 14:11Speaker 1: coaches to, you know, bring you something new this offseason.
- 14:14Speaker 1: Is there anything else that you feel like you're kind
- 14:16Speaker 1: of adjusting year two that you need to make to
- 14:18Speaker 1: maybe course correct or just change that course.
- 14:21Speaker 6: I mean, we have to left, We have to get stronger.
- 14:24Speaker 6: You know, when you have a young football team, like
- 14:25Speaker 6: you have to understand that this is a I mean,
- 14:27Speaker 6: this is a grown man sport like this is. There's
- 14:29Speaker 6: a bunch of big men out there playing this game.
- 14:34Speaker 6: And so I want to make sure that our players
- 14:36Speaker 6: understand how important.
- 14:37Speaker 5: You know, their physical development is.
- 14:41Speaker 6: They they may be skilled, but we you know, we
- 14:44Speaker 6: have some guys that you know, our team, like everybody's
- 14:47Speaker 6: at a different level, Like where where one player is
- 14:50Speaker 6: at twelve years into his career and the other players in
- 14:52Speaker 6: his second year. Like here's what I always say, Like
- 14:56Speaker 6: nobody talks about Tom Brady in two thousand and one,
- 14:58Speaker 6: in two thousand and how he changed his body and
- 15:01Speaker 6: he maximized his god given genetic ability. Everybody talks about
- 15:06Speaker 6: TB twelve and the pliability. They don't talk about how
- 15:09Speaker 6: hard he worked in the weight room and we lifted
- 15:11Speaker 6: with the tight end and the linebackers, and he squatted
- 15:14Speaker 6: and he hanged, cleaned, and he did all those things
- 15:17Speaker 6: to make his body the best that it could be
- 15:21Speaker 6: for him to play quarterback and to compete and once
- 15:25Speaker 6: his opportunity came. So I think that's always a good
- 15:28Speaker 6: reminder just looking at what you know, how hard this
- 15:32Speaker 6: player worked and what people thought it was.
- 15:35Speaker 5: But you know, some of us that were there, you.
- 15:38Speaker 6: Know, we got to see that, and you know, I
- 15:40Speaker 6: think that's just a good reminder that as a young
- 15:42Speaker 6: player you can still make a lot of gains once
- 15:45Speaker 6: you started your career.
- 15:47Speaker 2: Kind of along those same lines, when you did an
- 15:49Speaker 2: audit of the season in the Super Bowl. You guys
- 15:52Speaker 2: were a great offense during the regular season, he tanks
- 15:55Speaker 2: MVP runner up. In the playoffs, it seemed to take
- 15:58Speaker 2: maybe a little bit of a step back. Is that,
- 16:01Speaker 2: you know, young guys in big spots, great defenses.
- 16:04Speaker 6: Well yeah, I mean you obviously know what the type
- 16:07Speaker 6: of defenses that we played.
- 16:08Speaker 5: It wasn't like we were playing some rum dumbs.
- 16:10Speaker 6: You know, these guys were good and we we didn't
- 16:12Speaker 6: consistently do enough. I thought there were times where we
- 16:17Speaker 6: did and we we weren't able to sustain. And we'll
- 16:21Speaker 6: have to go back and understand it. To to put
- 16:24Speaker 6: yourself in those positions and ultimately win a championship, you're
- 16:27Speaker 6: gonna have to beat good defenses, whether that's at home
- 16:30Speaker 6: or on the road or whatever. That is so uh,
- 16:33Speaker 6: the consistency of it, the ability to create some X plays.
- 16:37Speaker 6: You know, it's hard to drive the ball ten or
- 16:39Speaker 6: twelve plays, and you know, just you have to be
- 16:43Speaker 6: have to be better, have to you know, improve the
- 16:46Speaker 6: details and improve the execution. And it again, we're all
- 16:49Speaker 6: involved in it, you know, from the coaching to the
- 16:52Speaker 6: playing is it's on us all and that's the be
- 16:55Speaker 6: our challenge going forward is. Yeah, we had success and
- 16:59Speaker 6: there was some really good performances, but you know, the
- 17:03Speaker 6: margin for air when you get into January really shrinks.
- 17:09Speaker 4: Well, coach, thank you so much.
- 17:10Speaker 1: Thank you guys, appreciate We'll see you back in fox Brough,
- 17:12Speaker 1: Mike Grabel, everybody.
- 17:13Speaker 5: Yeah, you guys should ask more questions when you come back.
- 17:16Speaker 4: All right. Always great to talk to Rabel.
- 17:18Speaker 1: I mean you bust our chops a little bit, but
- 17:19Speaker 1: that's you know that continued.
- 17:21Speaker 2: We have video evidence of it of him making fun
- 17:24Speaker 2: of me for not asking enough questions at press conferences.
- 17:27Speaker 3: So I guess I need to step it up, you know.
- 17:29Speaker 1: I mean I told a quick story of my first
- 17:31Speaker 1: combine A twenty twenty we saw for Abel sitting with
- 17:33Speaker 1: the Titans. I'm like, my god, their head coach just
- 17:35Speaker 1: comes and talks to the team. You know, it was
- 17:37Speaker 1: crazy to me. And you know now here we are
- 17:39Speaker 1: having the opportunity to talk talk to him here on
- 17:41Speaker 1: Patriots Draft Countdown, which is brought to you by bud Light.
- 17:44Speaker 1: It's easy to drink, it's easy to enjoy. Bud Light,
- 17:46Speaker 1: the official beer sponsor of the New England Patriots. And
- 17:48Speaker 1: we're not done, folks, we also talked to another I
- 17:51Speaker 1: guess I call him in New England. Great, it's Mike Gace,
- 17:53Speaker 1: the goat of Patriots reporters. Always enjoy talking with Mike.
- 17:57Speaker 1: It feels like, just not too long ago, we were
- 17:59Speaker 1: talking to him at the Super Bowl. So here's Myke
- 18:00Speaker 1: Greecee's thoughts on the Patriots offseason.
- 18:02Speaker 4: And what they might prioritize.
- 18:04Speaker 1: All right, we're excited now to be joined by Mike
- 18:06Speaker 1: Greece of course, man who needs no introduction.
- 18:08Speaker 4: Mike. Great to see you, Deuce Evan, let's talk.
- 18:12Speaker 1: Well, I gotta start, Mike, because I feel like we
- 18:14Speaker 1: talked to you with the Super Bowl couple.
- 18:15Speaker 4: I mean, it feels like it was yesterday.
- 18:17Speaker 3: I love that talk.
- 18:17Speaker 4: And you had a line in that preview that stuck
- 18:20Speaker 4: with me. It hit me like a trait train when
- 18:22Speaker 4: you said.
- 18:22Speaker 1: It, and you just looked at the defensive line of
- 18:24Speaker 1: Seattle and you said, these are a bunch of veteran players,
- 18:28Speaker 1: And that was.
- 18:29Speaker 4: So simplified it to me. And that is kind of
- 18:32Speaker 4: exactly how the game unfolded. Oh man.
- 18:34Speaker 7: And credit to Nick Cassario is because when I was
- 18:39Speaker 7: previewing the game with him for a story on ESPN
- 18:42Speaker 7: dot com. He sort of, I said, break down the Seahawks,
- 18:46Speaker 7: and we know from twenty four years a Bill he
- 18:49Speaker 7: would come, Bill Belichick would come to the podium and
- 18:51Speaker 7: he'd give us the other.
- 18:53Speaker 4: Team without any notes.
- 18:54Speaker 7: Yeah, right, And Nick did that and he started with
- 18:58Speaker 7: the Seahawks defensive front. And so I have to give
- 19:02Speaker 7: him the credit because honestly, it's not me studying it
- 19:06Speaker 7: like seventeen regular season games, three playoff games and coming
- 19:10Speaker 7: up with this brilliant plan of what's gonna unfold.
- 19:14Speaker 4: It was more talking to the experience that I trust.
- 19:17Speaker 1: But you were condo it, and I think it's just
- 19:18Speaker 1: it simplified it, and unfortunately.
- 19:20Speaker 3: It's exactly how it played it.
- 19:22Speaker 1: And I think back to the Patriots defenses, you know
- 19:24Speaker 1: in three and o four, when they were a veteran group,
- 19:27Speaker 1: when it was like you're going in this game with
- 19:28Speaker 1: Mike Rabel, you know, Teddy Bruski Willing. You just knew
- 19:32Speaker 1: that those guys were going to come to play in
- 19:33Speaker 1: the biggest games.
- 19:34Speaker 7: And I want to share a story from the year
- 19:38Speaker 7: with Morgan Moses, which is what we're talking about. Morgan
- 19:42Speaker 7: Moses is thirty four to thirty five years old, a
- 19:45Speaker 7: veteran in the league, and he was talking to me
- 19:47Speaker 7: about how much he likes Will Campbell and Jared Wilson,
- 19:52Speaker 7: and in sharing this story with me, he said, like
- 19:55Speaker 7: their kids like and And he then described himself and
- 19:59Speaker 7: said it wasn't until I was twenty four, twenty five
- 20:03Speaker 7: that just physically I could catch up to what I
- 20:07Speaker 7: was facing in the NFL. And we talked about Trent
- 20:12Speaker 7: Williams still doing it at thirty seven, thirty eight, thirty.
- 20:15Speaker 5: Nine years old.
- 20:16Speaker 7: Morgan wants to come back, by the way, Like that's
- 20:18Speaker 7: part of the whole conversation we were having. But I
- 20:21Speaker 7: remembered him telling me that thinking about the Super Bowl,
- 20:25Speaker 7: and like, wow, they are going to be relying on
- 20:27Speaker 7: these kids that need another offseason they get stronger and.
- 20:31Speaker 4: Build up there.
- 20:32Speaker 7: Yeah, what they have, you know, to go up against
- 20:35Speaker 7: these guys that have been in the league for three,
- 20:37Speaker 7: four or five years.
- 20:38Speaker 2: Yeah, I saw you reported yesterday that no surgery expected
- 20:42Speaker 2: for Will Campbell, and then that's good news. But I
- 20:44Speaker 2: thought that was something that stood out from Elliot Wolf yesterday.
- 20:47Speaker 2: It was him saying I didn't see the same lower
- 20:49Speaker 2: body strength in the playoffs. From him and then from
- 20:53Speaker 2: the regular season. What's just your sense though, just in
- 20:56Speaker 2: terms of their approach this offseason, and I think a
- 20:59Speaker 2: lot of if I started asking the same questions of
- 21:03Speaker 2: are you now in more of an expedited situation because
- 21:06Speaker 2: you did make the Super Bowl?
- 21:07Speaker 3: Or do you think they're still in that long term approach?
- 21:10Speaker 7: So you highlighted to me, Evan the most interesting thing
- 21:12Speaker 7: I heard yesterday, which was that view of Will Campbell,
- 21:16Speaker 7: Like we thought he played well before the injury, then
- 21:19Speaker 7: we didn't see the same ability to anchor, which I
- 21:24Speaker 7: think people listening might ask the question, Will, then why
- 21:27Speaker 7: did you play him?
- 21:28Speaker 4: You know?
- 21:28Speaker 7: And then I think the answer to that and I'm
- 21:30Speaker 7: going to deduce this they haven't said this. They still
- 21:33Speaker 7: felt like Will at that level was better than the
- 21:37Speaker 7: next option, which was Vederian Low And I think I
- 21:41Speaker 7: would have played this. I would have done it if
- 21:43Speaker 7: you're asking me the same way. But that's a fair question,
- 21:45Speaker 7: right In terms of the approach, I believe it comes
- 21:50Speaker 7: down to the money. I always believe it comes down
- 21:52Speaker 7: to the money. I think Christian Gonzales being eligible for
- 21:55Speaker 7: an extension is everything.
- 21:56Speaker 4: That's where it should start.
- 21:58Speaker 7: I think Drake being eligible next year at this time
- 22:01Speaker 7: has got to be in your long range view. So
- 22:05Speaker 7: I don't expect them to come out and spend like
- 22:09Speaker 7: a big, big deal unless it's just a perfect scenario.
- 22:13Speaker 4: Yeah, for example, the Raiders.
- 22:15Speaker 7: Say, you know what this Max Crosby, you can have
- 22:19Speaker 7: them for minimal compensation and and then you're you can
- 22:23Speaker 7: assume that contract, you know what I mean. So I
- 22:25Speaker 7: don't know if I answered.
- 22:26Speaker 2: The question, Yeah, no, you did, but I I just
- 22:28Speaker 2: in terms of just how you feel about it, too, Like,
- 22:31Speaker 2: do you think that they should take that approach, because
- 22:34Speaker 2: I think that a lot of fans hear that and
- 22:36Speaker 2: are gonna be a little bit disappointed that they're not
- 22:38Speaker 2: going to just now go for it, right, You're one
- 22:40Speaker 2: went away from the super Bowl last year. But I
- 22:42Speaker 2: actually kind of see it and say, I actually think
- 22:45Speaker 2: that that's probably the smart thing to do, because you
- 22:48Speaker 2: really kind of have to treat it like you almost
- 22:50Speaker 2: had like a nice season, like you know, like a
- 22:53Speaker 2: nine win ten win season, but the way that it
- 22:56Speaker 2: broke for them, it probably was the reason why they
- 22:59Speaker 2: got as far as they did. Yes, And I think
- 23:01Speaker 2: you have to be kind of realistic about that. At
- 23:03Speaker 2: the same time, would you agree.
- 23:04Speaker 4: With that one hundred percent? It's being honest.
- 23:08Speaker 7: With are you Are you a super Bowl team like
- 23:12Speaker 7: they were this year based on AFC being down a
- 23:16Speaker 7: little bit, give them credit to they learn how to
- 23:19Speaker 7: win games, Like I don't think that should be dismissed.
- 23:21Speaker 4: I don't love when people say, oh, you know, fools
- 23:24Speaker 4: gold for.
- 23:25Speaker 7: Lack of a better term, like that's that's bs to me, Like,
- 23:28Speaker 7: that's not fools gold.
- 23:29Speaker 4: It's hard to win. It's hard to go nine to
- 23:31Speaker 4: zero on the road, do you know?
- 23:33Speaker 7: You know what I mean? But at the same time,
- 23:35Speaker 7: like I don't, it's gonna be a lot harder in
- 23:38Speaker 7: twenty twenty six.
- 23:39Speaker 4: That's such what I was gonna say, Mike.
- 23:40Speaker 1: It's just it seems there's a lot of hard decisions
- 23:42Speaker 1: this year because it would be somewhat easy to run
- 23:45Speaker 1: it back. I mean, Chase On's a free agent, Austin Hooper,
- 23:48Speaker 1: Jalen Hawkins, a few starters and guys that you could
- 23:51Speaker 1: make an argument to bring all those guys back, that
- 23:53Speaker 1: they fit well, that they played, you know, better as
- 23:56Speaker 1: the season went on. But they're all the offensive linemen
- 24:00Speaker 1: are coming back. So it's just it's there's no easy, Like, well,
- 24:02Speaker 1: there's a hole here, and we like, you're gonna have
- 24:04Speaker 1: to probably move some pieces around, and you're not going
- 24:08Speaker 1: to bring back the same team next year. It's gonna
- 24:10Speaker 1: be a different team. I think everybody has to has
- 24:12Speaker 1: to realize that.
- 24:12Speaker 4: It'll it'll be a different team.
- 24:15Speaker 7: I feel like to build off what we're talking about,
- 24:17Speaker 7: another solid draft is mandatory, and I guess, to me,
- 24:22Speaker 7: that's going for it. It's like having another solid draft.
- 24:26Speaker 7: And I know that's not sexy, but if as we're
- 24:30Speaker 7: sitting here, I want to use an example from twenty
- 24:32Speaker 7: one to twenty two years ago, like go find the
- 24:36Speaker 7: first round pick that you made in two thousand and
- 24:38Speaker 7: five at pick thirty two, Go find that player this year.
- 24:44Speaker 7: Logan Mankins is who I'm talking about. I think everyone
- 24:47Speaker 7: watching knows that you're at thirty one. That's going for it.
- 24:51Speaker 7: To me, like, I know that's not traditional going for it,
- 24:55Speaker 7: but I want a nasty, athletic, mean big player up front.
- 25:03Speaker 1: Yeah helps, well Campbell, you add a little bit of
- 25:05Speaker 1: size maybe next to him. I think it's something that
- 25:07Speaker 1: we've talked about too easy way, Maybe that's a simple fix.
- 25:10Speaker 4: And who where does Jared Wilson end up, who is
- 25:12Speaker 4: it Evans?
- 25:13Speaker 2: I know on the spot, so pregnant from Oregon really
- 25:16Speaker 2: does fit that Bill. You know, he's a left guard
- 25:20Speaker 2: at Oregon, pure guard prospect, not one of these tackles
- 25:23Speaker 2: that's going to convert inside. He's a wider body. He's
- 25:27Speaker 2: a heavy handed guy. Not quite as big as as
- 25:30Speaker 2: big Mic, not not that sort of size, but similar
- 25:35Speaker 2: kind of player. The other guy that stands out to
- 25:38Speaker 2: me in that particular mold who is going to convert
- 25:41Speaker 2: from tackle to guard is Jennings Dunker from Iowa, who
- 25:44Speaker 2: is like, to me.
- 25:45Speaker 3: A Mike looks like it's a mullet.
- 25:47Speaker 2: Never for him, it's a that's probably a little high, yeah,
- 25:51Speaker 2: but he he's one of those guys that, you know,
- 25:54Speaker 2: there's a really good track record of moving college tackles
- 25:58Speaker 2: to guard. Logan Mankett was one of them, Joe Toney
- 26:01Speaker 2: was one of those guys, yep. And those guys have
- 26:04Speaker 2: a lot of success in the league. And Dunkard just
- 26:07Speaker 2: the way he looks, the way he did play, demeanor,
- 26:10Speaker 2: the style, uh that, the run blocking ability, all those
- 26:14Speaker 2: things to me do really scream Mike Rabel like that
- 26:17Speaker 2: kind of guy.
- 26:18Speaker 7: And I just want to use the Seahawks as an example,
- 26:21Speaker 7: Like they're the super Bowl champion and we're talking about
- 26:23Speaker 7: this idea of going for it. Like last year they
- 26:26Speaker 7: were Gray's able in the first round, right, I mean,
- 26:30Speaker 7: is that not going for it? I mean, yeah, do
- 26:33Speaker 7: you know what I mean? Like, so I just sort
- 26:35Speaker 7: of for me, I like to reframe.
- 26:37Speaker 2: Another guy that played tackle in college. By the way,
- 26:39Speaker 2: Craze Abel and moved inside. You mentioned Christian Zales. Yes, well,
- 26:43Speaker 2: where are you at in terms of that negotiation extension
- 26:47Speaker 2: Elliot Wolf?
- 26:48Speaker 3: Yesterday?
- 26:48Speaker 2: I felt like kinda was like, we'll get to it,
- 26:51Speaker 2: you know. It wasn't like something that we're going to
- 26:53Speaker 2: do this week sort of deal.
- 26:55Speaker 4: Yeah, So I have a theory.
- 26:56Speaker 7: I watched that interview with you and Matt Yeah, and
- 26:59Speaker 7: I thought it was excellent, and I wanted to be
- 27:01Speaker 7: that excellent though.
- 27:02Speaker 3: Man, yeah, we missed the champion.
- 27:06Speaker 7: I wanted to be prepared coming here. I think it's
- 27:09Speaker 7: semantics when he's talking like that, because technically they can't
- 27:13Speaker 7: talk about it until the new league year starts, so
- 27:17Speaker 7: we're a little early. I mean they have to be
- 27:19Speaker 7: aware of it, obviously, but he can't really because he's
- 27:23Speaker 7: still technically we're still technically in twenty Does that make sense. Yeah,
- 27:27Speaker 7: And so I'm not naive to think that that's not
- 27:30Speaker 7: on their mind, that that there's some idea of where
- 27:33Speaker 7: it what the ballpark is going to be, you know,
- 27:36Speaker 7: of where they're going to need to be. But I
- 27:38Speaker 7: think for him it's early to be talking about it
- 27:40Speaker 7: at this point until we get to the start of
- 27:43Speaker 7: the new league.
- 27:43Speaker 2: Yeah, it did feel like, I mean, Rabel came out
- 27:46Speaker 2: and said it at the end of the season. It
- 27:48Speaker 2: felt like Rabel wasn't totally sold on him at the beginning,
- 27:52Speaker 2: and then we heard a different tone from him in
- 27:55Speaker 2: the playoffs.
- 27:55Speaker 3: Did you get that same vibe too?
- 27:57Speaker 7: How about you and me standing next to each other
- 27:59Speaker 7: in Denver, Tenver after the AFC Championship game doing the
- 28:04Speaker 7: interviews with coach and the players, and I think you
- 28:07Speaker 7: were right next to me when he said about Christian
- 28:09Speaker 7: Gonzales said maybe after the Baltimore game December twenty first,
- 28:13Speaker 7: if I have the date right off the top of
- 28:15Speaker 7: my head that he noticed a different player, a different approach,
- 28:18Speaker 7: or however he had said it. And my whole view
- 28:21Speaker 7: on this is we don't need to overcomplicate it. This
- 28:25Speaker 7: regime has to this point proven to us if you
- 28:29Speaker 7: have an elite player, like there's not really a question
- 28:32Speaker 7: like we want to keep them. And so I feel
- 28:35Speaker 7: like until they show us otherwise, like I'm not really
- 28:38Speaker 7: questioning where this is gonna go. Yeah, like I think
- 28:41Speaker 7: it's gonna happen.
- 28:42Speaker 4: I got one more for you, Mike.
- 28:43Speaker 1: It's we talk about the needs for the Patriots, and
- 28:45Speaker 1: it seems like everyone's like, well, they need a number one,
- 28:48Speaker 1: you know, and we got Stefan Diggs last year. You know,
- 28:50Speaker 1: we had a really good year, tapered off towards the
- 28:53Speaker 1: end of middlely, but people are longing for this guy,
- 28:56Speaker 1: and now there seems like a significant portion that's like
- 28:58Speaker 1: we're done with him. And then the same other side
- 29:01Speaker 1: of their mouth, they're saying, but we need a number one.
- 29:03Speaker 4: And it just well who and how?
- 29:05Speaker 1: And it's just it's so hard and I'm getting so
- 29:08Speaker 1: frustrated because it just becomes they need number one, the
- 29:11Speaker 1: well who who? How do they get one of these
- 29:12Speaker 1: top five receivers in the league. They don't just grow
- 29:14Speaker 1: on cap.
- 29:15Speaker 7: I don't know how, you know't is it a trade
- 29:18Speaker 7: for someone like a Brian Thomas. That's one that just
- 29:21Speaker 7: sort of just throw it out there, right, If played
- 29:24Speaker 7: really well as a rookie, maybe not, the production wasn't
- 29:27Speaker 7: as great as second year, Would the Jaguars be willing
- 29:29Speaker 7: to part with them? And maybe for something reasonable? That
- 29:33Speaker 7: would be something I would consider too, But I'm just speculating.
- 29:37Speaker 7: I don't know anything about that. I think on Diggs,
- 29:40Speaker 7: follow the money, Like, isn't it that simple? Like he's
- 29:43Speaker 7: making this in twenty twenty five, it goes way up
- 29:47Speaker 7: in twenty twenty six, the cap number goes way up,
- 29:50Speaker 7: and so the team has to just have a conversation
- 29:52Speaker 7: of do we want to move forward? Like so, I
- 29:55Speaker 7: always follow the money, and I don't know where it's
- 29:58Speaker 7: gonna head.
- 29:59Speaker 4: I thought he was this year. He did everything they
- 30:01Speaker 4: asked for.
- 30:02Speaker 7: He was great in the locker room, one of my
- 30:04Speaker 7: favorite personal players just because of his competitive spirit.
- 30:09Speaker 4: So I could see that going either way. Just to
- 30:11Speaker 4: be honest with you.
- 30:12Speaker 2: If there's one thing that they do in free agency
- 30:15Speaker 2: that would be a little splashy, a little exciting, where
- 30:19Speaker 2: do you kind of see position target anything like that.
- 30:23Speaker 4: That's a good one number one wide receiver, I know, right,
- 30:26Speaker 4: But I don't know. I'd just like to say it, yeah,
- 30:30Speaker 4: and he's going to get tagged and a J.
- 30:31Speaker 3: Brown wherever you want to talk.
- 30:32Speaker 4: About AJ Brown.
- 30:33Speaker 2: I know this is the time of year where you know,
- 30:36Speaker 2: we start talking about all these guys and then Kyle
- 30:38Speaker 2: Pitts gets the tag. It sounds like George Pickens is
- 30:40Speaker 2: going to get the tag, Alex Pearce is probably going
- 30:42Speaker 2: to get tagged, and they all just kind.
- 30:44Speaker 7: Of So So here's my hot take. I won't give
- 30:47Speaker 7: you a how many. Yeah, that's what it takes. If
- 30:50Speaker 7: there's a big splash, it wouldn't be free agency. It'd
- 30:53Speaker 7: be more of a trade, you know, like that that
- 30:55Speaker 7: idea of you never know what a team is willing
- 30:59Speaker 7: to move on from a player for. And I would say,
- 31:03Speaker 7: I don't see the Patriots doing a Micah Parsons or
- 31:06Speaker 7: a Sauce Gardner type trade. They're not giving up two
- 31:10Speaker 7: ones and a big contract. But if a team has
- 31:15Speaker 7: an attractive player that and I don't know if Quinn
- 31:18Speaker 7: Williams would be that level, but like a one and
- 31:21Speaker 7: maybe something else, Like I'm not saying I don't. I
- 31:25Speaker 7: don't think it's gonna happen. Like if you're asking me
- 31:27Speaker 7: to bet. Is that gonna happen? No, But but you
- 31:30Speaker 7: asked the question, like, what would be the splash? That
- 31:33Speaker 7: would be the splash without knowing that what another team
- 31:37Speaker 7: would be willing to give up a player for. Does
- 31:40Speaker 7: that make sense?
- 31:40Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 31:41Speaker 2: I mean that's always this time of year, right, is
- 31:42Speaker 2: time conversations happen?
- 31:44Speaker 5: Right?
- 31:45Speaker 2: Who's the trade that's going to come out of nowhere
- 31:48Speaker 2: this offseason that we don't see coming because we talked
- 31:50Speaker 2: so much about Crosby and AJ Brown and those players,
- 31:53Speaker 2: But there's always one guy that's available that nobody even
- 31:56Speaker 2: knows about, and all of a sudden he's on a
- 31:58Speaker 2: different team.
- 31:59Speaker 7: Can we to Brian Thomas just for your opinion? One,
- 32:03Speaker 7: do you think he's a number one?
- 32:06Speaker 1: I think he's dynamic in the way of a number one.
- 32:08Speaker 1: But I get I get caught up that I have
- 32:09Speaker 1: a thing with number one to all this stuff, But
- 32:11Speaker 1: I think he's really you know, I'm looking at everything
- 32:13Speaker 1: through Drake now and what serves Drake downfield guys guys
- 32:17Speaker 1: that can separate downfield and make big plays, And I think,
- 32:19Speaker 1: I mean, I think he would fit the mold. I
- 32:21Speaker 1: just don't know if he's going to scratch the itch
- 32:23Speaker 1: of we need a number one. Well, he's okay, he
- 32:25Speaker 1: had a good year, you know, but he's kind of
- 32:27Speaker 1: falling off recently.
- 32:28Speaker 7: I think you're right on Dous in terms of like
- 32:30Speaker 7: the expectation of what's possible.
- 32:33Speaker 4: What do you think of Brian?
- 32:34Speaker 2: I think the concern that I have with him is
- 32:37Speaker 2: more about some of the things that were on the
- 32:39Speaker 2: film last year in terms of effort, Like there were
- 32:41Speaker 2: times last year where the routes just didn't look like
- 32:45Speaker 2: he was kind of going through the paces a little
- 32:48Speaker 2: bit right where he wasn't showing great effort all the time. Now,
- 32:52Speaker 2: is Mike Rabel the exact kind of coach that is
- 32:54Speaker 2: going to hit the button and you know, get on
- 32:56Speaker 2: his butt to show that effort consistently. When they were,
- 33:02Speaker 2: you know, drafting Drake may I went down to LSU
- 33:05Speaker 2: as well for the pro day with Jayden Daniels, and
- 33:08Speaker 2: Jayden Daniels threw to Molik Neighbors and he threw to
- 33:10Speaker 2: Brian Thomas Junior at his pro day, and I just
- 33:13Speaker 2: remember thinking, these two guys are different, Like these guys
- 33:16Speaker 2: can run the you know just mentioned in the downfield ability,
- 33:20Speaker 2: the slot fade and you know those condensed phase by
- 33:23Speaker 2: those two guys probably their best routes.
- 33:25Speaker 5: Uh.
- 33:25Speaker 2: They they were, uh just majestic, Like you just watched
- 33:29Speaker 2: them move on the field and I was like, this
- 33:31Speaker 2: is this is different And so I would be for
- 33:33Speaker 2: it in that sense because I do think that he's
- 33:35Speaker 2: like a rare type of talent. I just wonder and
- 33:39Speaker 2: maybe the Patriots have the perfect head coach for it,
- 33:41Speaker 2: you know how it can Mike Rabel kind of get
- 33:44Speaker 2: him to give that Digs kind of effort because I
- 33:47Speaker 2: think that's the difference between Digs that people don't talk
- 33:50Speaker 2: enough about, is his competitiveness in his full tilt all
- 33:53Speaker 2: the time. Then somebody needs to get Brian Thomas Junior there,
- 33:58Speaker 2: and if you do, then I think you have like
- 33:59Speaker 2: a pro a thousand yard receiver.
- 34:01Speaker 7: So those are the fun things. So that's my hot take.
- 34:05Speaker 7: Thanks so much for sitting down with us.
- 34:08Speaker 1: I just talked to you at the Super Bowl. I
- 34:09Speaker 1: feel like we need to check in with you in
- 34:10Speaker 1: a couple of weeks. But enjoy the rest of the COMMA.
- 34:12Speaker 4: Great being with you guys. Thank you all right, great
- 34:15Speaker 4: stuff for Mike.
- 34:15Speaker 1: As always, I could sit and talk about we could
- 34:18Speaker 1: talk with Mike Reese for football forever.
- 34:20Speaker 2: I guess throwing Brian Thomas Junior out there, by the way.
- 34:23Speaker 2: I mean when Mike Resay I told this story, I
- 34:25Speaker 2: think at the Super Bowl when we had him on
- 34:28Speaker 2: a radio row. I was standing next to him in
- 34:30Speaker 2: Denver and the press conferences after the AFC Championship game,
- 34:34Speaker 2: and he asked Drake May about his shoulder, and I
- 34:37Speaker 2: was like, why is Mike Reae asking Drake May about
- 34:39Speaker 2: his shoulder? And then the whole shoulder gate you know,
- 34:42Speaker 2: comes after that. So he made him throwing Brian Thomas
- 34:45Speaker 2: Junior just on a whim out there.
- 34:47Speaker 3: I was like, noted, all right, I mean explosive player.
- 34:51Speaker 1: I mean yeah, not not not not intriguing to add
- 34:55Speaker 1: that kind of skill set with with Drake May. But hey,
- 34:57Speaker 1: we are just getting started here at the Combine in
- 35:00Speaker 1: D day one in the books of positional groups, and
- 35:02Speaker 1: of course we've got workouts coming up, so you know
- 35:04Speaker 1: you're gonna be all over those. You're gonna write up
- 35:06Speaker 1: you know, who's standing out, who's up maybe not working out.
- 35:09Speaker 2: Who has short arms, arms, short legs, long lends, medium legs.
- 35:14Speaker 1: We got it all for you folks. This week and
- 35:16Speaker 1: tomorrow we'll hear from the defensive backs. We'll be back
- 35:19Speaker 1: more interviews and more coverage here from the Combine in Indianapolis.
