- 0:04Speaker 1: NHL Unscripted is a production of the NHL and iHeart podcasts.
- 0:19Speaker 1: That's Right, Episode eleven. As we surge into double digits
- 0:22Speaker 1: here an NHL Unscripted, he's demersed on Burk. It's great
- 0:24Speaker 1: to have you with us. We're gonna be talking four Nations,
- 0:26Speaker 1: and Jason Neverse called it I swear to God on
- 0:28Speaker 1: his social media. He said, Hannah in overtime, and they
- 0:31Speaker 1: did so against Sweden ahead of a fevers crowd there
- 0:33Speaker 1: in Montreal. We'll talk all about four Nations plus USA
- 0:36Speaker 1: now missing Queen Hughes, what that means for them. We'll
- 0:38Speaker 1: also talk for the quarter century teams. The great Sean McDonough,
- 0:41Speaker 1: who has been a legend in sports broadcasting for decades,
- 0:44Speaker 1: will be the voice calling the Four Nations Championship on
- 0:46Speaker 1: ESPN February twentieth.
- 0:48Speaker 2: He joins us talk but all things not hockey. That's right.
- 0:50Speaker 2: That talks a little baseball, talks a little golf.
- 0:52Speaker 1: He was outstanding, and of course in the Cinephile and
- 0:54Speaker 1: sixty we're talking to movies. Jad's watched a ton over
- 0:56Speaker 1: the last little stretch as he serch towards the Academy Awards. JD.
- 0:59Speaker 2: What's going on, man, Good to see it.
- 1:01Speaker 3: Good to see you, my man. It's nice to be back.
- 1:03Speaker 3: A couple of crowds country flights, and I had a
- 1:07Speaker 3: quick question. I want I wanted to save this for
- 1:09Speaker 3: you guys, because you know, I'm flying through the airport.
- 1:12Speaker 3: I'm going to I was going to Phoenix, so I'm
- 1:14Speaker 3: getting through security, and as I'm walking through security, there's
- 1:18Speaker 3: there's a woman with her two kids, probably five years old,
- 1:20Speaker 3: five and six years old. She's wearing a jacket. This
- 1:23Speaker 3: little girl five or six again, she doesn't want to
- 1:25Speaker 3: take her jacket off. The mom's sitting there says, please, honey,
- 1:29Speaker 3: take the jacket off. Kids starts having a full on meltdown,
- 1:33Speaker 3: throwing herself on the ground, screaming like blue murder in
- 1:36Speaker 3: the in the airport, like blue murder. And the mom's
- 1:39Speaker 3: keeping it together because as a parent, I'm sitting there like, yeah,
- 1:43Speaker 3: I'm like, do you do you do you do you
- 1:45Speaker 3: hit the kid? Do you not hit the kid? What
- 1:46Speaker 3: do you what do you do? Do you do you
- 1:48Speaker 3: scream at the kid for just not have children, which
- 1:51Speaker 3: is why he's not Yeah, but this is this is
- 1:53Speaker 3: I'm asking with the kids. It's suns. Right, it's a
- 1:56Speaker 3: little loved that I got loved tapped when I was
- 1:58Speaker 3: a kid if I was acting up. But you know,
- 2:00Speaker 3: you got to realize there's tsa there's cops around, there's people.
- 2:03Speaker 3: So they get through the security and she's like on
- 2:06Speaker 3: the other side, the girls, like the young girl's like
- 2:08Speaker 3: now throwing herself on the ground, rolling on the unscreaming,
- 2:11Speaker 3: crawling under tables. What do you do there? Is it?
- 2:15Speaker 3: Is it a swing? Is it a spank? Is it
- 2:16Speaker 3: a hey, you wait till we get home? Or is
- 2:18Speaker 3: it like you just got to kind of grit your
- 2:20Speaker 3: teeth and be like that's it. I just don't know
- 2:21Speaker 3: as a parent you hit or not hit?
- 2:23Speaker 1: No, no, you can't hit. But it's it's a lot
- 2:26Speaker 1: of self contained anger. But you're right, you're gritting your teeth,
- 2:29Speaker 1: like you just wait, like this is this is not filming.
- 2:32Speaker 3: People are filming the mom and the kid because that's
- 2:35Speaker 3: how bad it was. I've never heard a meltdown like this.
- 2:38Speaker 3: I was three gates away and they were still up
- 2:40Speaker 3: on the concourse and I could hear the screaming, blood
- 2:44Speaker 3: curdling screams.
- 2:45Speaker 1: And tell you feel for the parent because everyone's judging
- 2:48Speaker 1: the parent, Like Jason said, whether or not you have
- 2:49Speaker 1: a kid or don't. But as parents, we've been there
- 2:52Speaker 1: our kids all ACKed up, but not it sounds like
- 2:53Speaker 1: this level towel.
- 2:54Speaker 2: This is a mutant clearly.
- 2:57Speaker 3: How you're a hitter too.
- 2:59Speaker 4: I can't seeyeah, I have a young son.
- 3:01Speaker 5: I can't say we've ever hit the fit public fit
- 3:05Speaker 5: in the airport stage of raising our child. But yeah,
- 3:08Speaker 5: I feel like for me, that's that's where you immediately
- 3:10Speaker 5: start the negotiation.
- 3:12Speaker 4: Yes, hey, we're not doing this, you want to do this?
- 3:15Speaker 4: Not happening.
- 3:16Speaker 3: But we're told you don't negotiate with terrorists. Tal you Tal,
- 3:20Speaker 3: You look like you seem reserved. You look like you
- 3:23Speaker 3: swing swing first, Ask questions later.
- 3:28Speaker 4: My wife maybe just kidding, Keith, I love it.
- 3:39Speaker 1: Tell's wife just let's swing first, house questions later. Speaking
- 3:42Speaker 1: of coming up swinging first, that's what the Philadelphia Eagles
- 3:44Speaker 1: did in the Super Bowl. I got to mention my
- 3:46Speaker 1: beloved Eagles demurs openly chirping on Twitter saying he doesn't
- 3:49Speaker 1: want to do unscripted this week because my gloating, but
- 3:51Speaker 1: I'll keep it brief. A bit of fancas nineteen ninety
- 3:53Speaker 1: thirty five years of fandom. Oh for our first twenty
- 3:56Speaker 1: eight years. It's now three Super Bowl appearances in the
- 3:58Speaker 1: last seven years and two championships. I don't know what
- 4:00Speaker 1: to do with myself, but I'll tell you this, JD.
- 4:02Speaker 1: Going into this playoff run, I'm an idiot because I,
- 4:05Speaker 1: like many earlier in the years and fire Syrienne, Eagles
- 4:07Speaker 1: were two and two. They go into the Bible and
- 4:09Speaker 1: after that they're unstoppable. They won sixty of the last
- 4:11Speaker 1: seventeen games. The one blemish was against Washington, when Jade
- 4:14Speaker 1: Daniels threw five touchdowns every stretch of the playoff run.
- 4:17Speaker 1: I felt pretty good Packers rams once the lines were
- 4:19Speaker 1: out of like, oh we'll beat Washing again. But going
- 4:21Speaker 1: into the Super Bowl, I have a few buddies now,
- 4:23Speaker 1: I have a few who are like blow up for
- 4:24Speaker 1: strem Like really, one of my friends actually goes forty
- 4:26Speaker 1: to nine, forty to fourteen Eagles. I'm like, Wow, I
- 4:29Speaker 1: got do Mahomes magic. I'm calling thirty one twenty four.
- 4:31Speaker 1: I text the manager of the New York Yankees, my
- 4:33Speaker 1: dear buddy, Aaron Boone, diehard Eagles fan.
- 4:35Speaker 2: He goes, I got twenty seven to seventeen.
- 4:36Speaker 1: The Homes magic makes you queezy going in And then
- 4:39Speaker 1: while watching the game, I said, what in the world
- 4:41Speaker 1: was I nervous about this Eagles defense? Picuarly that card
- 4:43Speaker 1: four absolutely overwhelming, And I can imagine for yourself, a
- 4:46Speaker 1: guy who doesn't have a dog in the race, what
- 4:48Speaker 1: a terrible Super Bowl Eagles boat raced him.
- 4:50Speaker 3: Oh, I mean it was, It wasn't It was so
- 4:53Speaker 3: much fun to watch. I'm a defenseman, so watching defense
- 4:56Speaker 3: thrive and defense like really dominate. And to get that
- 4:59Speaker 3: kind of pressure with the front four like to be
- 5:02Speaker 3: able as a defense and football just drop everybody back
- 5:04Speaker 3: and still get to the quarterback is I mean, you
- 5:07Speaker 3: can't ask for it. That's you can't. You can't lose
- 5:10Speaker 3: with that kind of defense because it's I don't care
- 5:12Speaker 3: how good of a quarterback you are. If you're getting
- 5:15Speaker 3: pressure in you all game from only four and you
- 5:18Speaker 3: are looking up and all you see his bodies ever
- 5:20Speaker 3: Eagles everywhere you're you're not. It doesn't matter how good
- 5:23Speaker 3: you were, Mahomes or not. So it was nice to
- 5:25Speaker 3: see the Eagles were the best team. I mean they
- 5:27Speaker 3: were fans and they didn't even have like a Barkley
- 5:29Speaker 3: game where he kind of ran rough shots. So I congratulations,
- 5:33Speaker 3: it was born as shit. The how'd you like the halftime?
- 5:36Speaker 1: Yeah, so let's get to the music.
- 5:37Speaker 3: So I looked like the halftime performance, but I'm.
- 5:40Speaker 2: A huge trombone shorty guy. He was great.
- 5:42Speaker 1: And Terrence Blanchard, who Spike Lee's longtime composed, he was
- 5:44Speaker 1: the trumpeter.
- 5:45Speaker 4: Right at the start.
- 5:46Speaker 1: Harry Connock Junior introduced him, so I was actually more
- 5:48Speaker 1: excited for that. And John Baptiste I thought did a
- 5:51Speaker 1: great anthem the way he did in the Land of
- 5:52Speaker 1: the Three. I thought it was a great star spangled banner.
- 5:54Speaker 1: I enjoyed those guys more than Kendrick Lamar. You and
- 5:57Speaker 1: I both not huge hip hop guys. You're more in
- 5:59Speaker 1: the EDM. I gotta be honest. The game got one
- 6:01Speaker 1: hundred and twenty six million. I believe Lamar might have
- 6:03Speaker 1: got one hundred thirty one.
- 6:05Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 6:05Speaker 3: I thought it was good. I know, I do know
- 6:08Speaker 3: some Kendrick Lamar songs, so I like it, and I
- 6:11Speaker 3: think he is like one of the best rappers and
- 6:14Speaker 3: hip hop artists of all time. So I think he's
- 6:16Speaker 3: he's that good. I just you know, I just don't
- 6:19Speaker 3: know how that plays in those those venues. Like my
- 6:22Speaker 3: wife's turning, She's like, it just doesn't work, like my
- 6:25Speaker 3: favorite one. And it's not because I like a certain
- 6:28Speaker 3: genre more the other. But like the Bruno Mar when
- 6:30Speaker 3: Bruno Mars had his, I think it was like ten
- 6:32Speaker 3: twelve years ago, it was a show is incredible. It
- 6:35Speaker 3: was so good. You could bring on you know, you
- 6:37Speaker 3: can bring on people, guests to come in and help sing,
- 6:40Speaker 3: and you can really make it theatrical in a scene,
- 6:42Speaker 3: because that's what the super Bowl is. Unfortunately, like when
- 6:44Speaker 3: you bring in the hip hop and the rap, it
- 6:46Speaker 3: just doesn't play. It's too big of a stadium.
- 6:48Speaker 2: Let's get to the four nations. So I'm an old man.
- 6:50Speaker 1: I went to bed after two period's like oh three
- 6:52Speaker 1: one Canada, we got this. You were locked in an
- 6:53Speaker 1: NHL network and I wake up today and you're just
- 6:55Speaker 1: sitting the messages going all my good Belsinger was rocket
- 6:57Speaker 1: what it finished?
- 6:58Speaker 2: Like, what the hell happens?
- 6:58Speaker 1: So I watched the DVR and oh my god, Canada,
- 7:00Speaker 1: thank god beat Sweden four to three. But Krasa was unbelievable.
- 7:03Speaker 1: Three assists and the fans chanting his name. I did
- 7:06Speaker 1: see what Wayne Gretzky was saying at the second or mission.
- 7:08Speaker 1: He goes, you know, when I was getting older and
- 7:09Speaker 1: playing with young guys, it reinvigorated me. People often focus
- 7:12Speaker 1: in the young players. Hey, what's it like to play
- 7:14Speaker 1: with person a Gretzky Lemieux. Crosby goes, But he's invigorated
- 7:18Speaker 1: by playing with those guys.
- 7:19Speaker 4: JD.
- 7:19Speaker 1: I gotta type frek guy who it wasn't a hard
- 7:21Speaker 1: percent sure whether he was going to play for people
- 7:23Speaker 1: of four nations?
- 7:24Speaker 2: Who really cares?
- 7:25Speaker 1: Clearly Sidney Crosby at thirty seven years of ages taking
- 7:27Speaker 1: it seriously.
- 7:28Speaker 2: He was awesome.
- 7:30Speaker 3: That whole game, the whole spectacle. You know, anybody that
- 7:34Speaker 3: thought this turn and hey, I was a little skeptical
- 7:36Speaker 3: of this tournament. I was like, is this really gonna
- 7:38Speaker 3: be our guy's gonna be given it? Or are they
- 7:39Speaker 3: gonna be going hard?
- 7:41Speaker 6: You know?
- 7:41Speaker 3: Is it gonna be good competition? And holy shit it was.
- 7:46Speaker 3: It was such a good event. I mean starting off
- 7:49Speaker 3: with just marye Lemue walking out at the start of
- 7:52Speaker 3: the game as the ambassador, coming out having a picture
- 7:56Speaker 3: next to Sidney Crosby, the place erupting and then the game,
- 7:59Speaker 3: physicality was up, you know it. Cannon was dominating early
- 8:02Speaker 3: in the first period. I think Bell Center really carried them,
- 8:06Speaker 3: Like I think the fans were just next level, and
- 8:08Speaker 3: that's how good Montreal Canadians fans are and fans within
- 8:11Speaker 3: the Montreal area. And I think Sweden was just a
- 8:14Speaker 3: little kind of hesitant. They were a little bit scared
- 8:17Speaker 3: and you know, two nothing lead early and then Sweden,
- 8:20Speaker 3: who I think is a dark horse in the tournament
- 8:22Speaker 3: for me, I think they have the best decore in
- 8:25Speaker 3: the tournament, a lot of NHL experience. They started to
- 8:28Speaker 3: kind of implement their game and I mean they held
- 8:30Speaker 3: Canada like twenty twenty two shots, which is which is
- 8:33Speaker 3: insane with the amount of skill you have on that team.
- 8:35Speaker 3: And you know again it was but it was the
- 8:37Speaker 3: Sidney Crosby show, like this guy is is every every
- 8:41Speaker 3: time we think he might be getting a little old,
- 8:43Speaker 3: you know, he comes out and he plays fantastic game,
- 8:46Speaker 3: uses his brain. I broke down the three goals that
- 8:48Speaker 3: he was involved in directly him using his vision. I mean,
- 8:52Speaker 3: there's every every single clip of the goal and I'd
- 8:56Speaker 3: love and edit here if we put these clips here.
- 8:59Speaker 3: But before every goal he's he takes a look and
- 9:02Speaker 3: scans the ice and then that's where he ends up
- 9:05Speaker 3: going with the pucks. So in the mckinning goal, he looks,
- 9:07Speaker 3: hees where McKinnon makes that little spin around my backhand.
- 9:10Speaker 3: Then when he goes to mark Stone, he literally looks
- 9:12Speaker 3: behind him says, Okay, mark Stone's coming late. I can
- 9:15Speaker 3: drive deep, turn up hit mark Stone. He does it,
- 9:18Speaker 3: and then in overtime he's looking where guys are coming
- 9:20Speaker 3: off from the bench and he's looking back behind him
- 9:23Speaker 3: where Mitch Marner is goes into the zone, drops it back.
- 9:26Speaker 3: Nobody really does that, and then gets out of the
- 9:28Speaker 3: zone leads to the Mitch Marner goal. He's just he's incredible.
- 9:32Speaker 3: He is Captain Canada. And the crazy stat that I
- 9:36Speaker 3: want to really drive home here and drill home before
- 9:39Speaker 3: I let you get back on this is in international games, Sidney.
- 9:42Speaker 3: When Sidney Crosby is playing consecutively, he is twenty six
- 9:46Speaker 3: straight wins in his last twenty six international games. He's
- 9:51Speaker 3: twenty six and zero. That is such an astronomical number.
- 9:54Speaker 3: When he is on team Canada, they have not lost
- 9:57Speaker 3: in twenty six games.
- 9:58Speaker 1: Dude, that's incredible. I did not know that one grave
- 10:01Speaker 1: concern the Shay Theodore injury. As soon as you hear
- 10:04Speaker 1: we're down to five defense an, what like, oh my god,
- 10:06Speaker 1: like geez, like this is this is the start of
- 10:08Speaker 1: the tournament.
- 10:08Speaker 2: And I love cal mccarnan.
- 10:09Speaker 1: It's great sing Drew Dowdy up there, but talk about
- 10:12Speaker 1: a potentially crippling injury.
- 10:13Speaker 3: Yeah, she you never want to see anybody get hurt
- 10:16Speaker 3: in this, and I think that was the fear of everybody.
- 10:18Speaker 3: And then he gets it. It didn't look good. He
- 10:20Speaker 3: went and got X rays and and Jackie Redman was
- 10:24Speaker 3: kind of commentating on TNT and she said he she
- 10:27Speaker 3: said she just saw it and it was like swollen
- 10:29Speaker 3: and typically that's a break. That's a breakover a sprain
- 10:32Speaker 3: and and he probably broke a wrist or forearm. And
- 10:34Speaker 3: I'm not you know, I'm not a doctor, but I'm
- 10:36Speaker 3: just saying I played one on TV. But uh yeah,
- 10:39Speaker 3: I'm just saying he got X rays and it's not
- 10:42Speaker 3: good because he you kind of saw. That's when Sweden
- 10:45Speaker 3: started to take over a little bit too, because he's
- 10:47Speaker 3: a puck moving defenseman, really mobile, and you know, with
- 10:51Speaker 3: Pareco and Dowdy, they're not as fleet of foot as him,
- 10:54Speaker 3: so it's kind of they weren't breaking out the puckets
- 10:56Speaker 3: clean once he got injured. And those guys played a
- 10:59Speaker 3: lot of minutes. But again, all those all those deep
- 11:01Speaker 3: played you know, twenty five plus, So for them it
- 11:03Speaker 3: was fine, But that kind of atmosphere I think, uh,
- 11:07Speaker 3: it was tough and and you know, credit to them,
- 11:09Speaker 3: they kind of they bent but did not break. And
- 11:12Speaker 3: now Travis Sandheim comes in. But it's a crazy rule
- 11:14Speaker 3: that until they're at eighteen skaters, they can't replace anybody.
- 11:18Speaker 3: So if another D man gets hurt, they have to
- 11:21Speaker 3: afford us to play D because the rule, the rule
- 11:25Speaker 3: is you're a you have to be at eight under
- 11:27Speaker 3: eighteen skaters to replace guys from other teams. So can
- 11:30Speaker 3: you imagine you're sitting in Cobos sipping on a cocktail
- 11:34Speaker 3: and two guys go down, You go, You needn't come
- 11:37Speaker 3: play for Canada against the USA on Saturday and watch
- 11:40Speaker 3: Jesus two sheets to the wind.
- 11:43Speaker 1: It'd be a crazy atmosphere. Listen, you're always one for
- 11:45Speaker 1: four thinking of being different. How about three on three
- 11:48Speaker 1: in the NHL for ten minutes? How wild would that be?
- 11:50Speaker 3: I think it's I think it should be severely considered.
- 11:54Speaker 3: I know McKinnon talked about it and everybody's online saying, well,
- 11:58Speaker 3: you know, the top guys are gonna get tired. I'm like, well,
- 12:01Speaker 3: the ten minutes makes you play your whole life. Don't
- 12:05Speaker 3: just play the mckinnons for six minutes. He played like
- 12:07Speaker 3: six of the seven minutes, Nate McKinnon. See, of course
- 12:10Speaker 3: he's going to be freaking tired. He played six to
- 12:12Speaker 3: seven minutes. Yeah, he's your best player, He's who you
- 12:14Speaker 3: want out there, but you need to have other guys
- 12:16Speaker 3: that play. And I think it would just it might
- 12:18Speaker 3: cause more goals because you'll have to put a third
- 12:20Speaker 3: line out there, a couple guys that don't typically play
- 12:22Speaker 3: three on three, And I just think, you know, if
- 12:26Speaker 3: you did that, That's the one rule I would like
- 12:28Speaker 3: them to look at is ten minutes. And then the
- 12:30Speaker 3: other rule in three on three if it's my opinion,
- 12:32Speaker 3: and I'm sure Gary listens to this, so Gary, if
- 12:35Speaker 3: you're listening, is in the three on three, when you
- 12:38Speaker 3: have the puck and you cross the offensive blue line,
- 12:40Speaker 3: so you're going into the ozone to attack, you cannot
- 12:44Speaker 3: then bring the puck outside the blue line. You have
- 12:46Speaker 3: to stay in the offensive zone so you don't get
- 12:48Speaker 3: this thing where guys start just bringing the puck back,
- 12:51Speaker 3: bringing the puck back, bringing the puck back. It means
- 12:53Speaker 3: you have to stay in the offensive zone until there's
- 12:56Speaker 3: a turnover. And I think you would increase play and
- 13:00Speaker 3: increase turnovers, and it would increase the it would kind
- 13:03Speaker 3: of speed up. I think the three on three a
- 13:04Speaker 3: little bit.
- 13:06Speaker 1: Yeah, it's I mean, it's definitely. Listen, you think back
- 13:08Speaker 1: years ago and you go, oh, no, over time, it's
- 13:10Speaker 1: the way this they'll ever do a shootout that gets incorporated.
- 13:12Speaker 1: So the game does evolve and change, and you're right,
- 13:13Speaker 1: but just being things up instantly would make things exciting.
- 13:16Speaker 1: You predicted Canada USA as many are doing. You're predicting
- 13:19Speaker 1: USA to win. Of course, to Quinn Hughes injury that
- 13:21Speaker 1: could be notable and impact in such a short term.
- 13:24Speaker 1: Who knows how these things will go down, but Canada
- 13:26Speaker 1: US and Saturday is gonna be must watch and potentially
- 13:28Speaker 1: February twentieth in the Championship with Sean McDon will be
- 13:31Speaker 1: calling in the ESPN. Sean is coming up here momentarily.
- 13:33Speaker 1: So first Nations off and cooking in the great city
- 13:36Speaker 1: of Montreal. I did want to hit you up as
- 13:38Speaker 1: well on this quarter century team. We were gonna get
- 13:39Speaker 1: this last week, but I know you're doing a little
- 13:41Speaker 1: bit of a talking on an NHL network as well.
- 13:43Speaker 1: So the fact that fans now have opportunity to vote
- 13:46Speaker 1: for the NHL's All quarter Century Team. The fan vote
- 13:49Speaker 1: will determine the top twenty five players the past twenty
- 13:51Speaker 1: five years, regardless of position, that will comprise NHL Courter
- 13:55Speaker 1: Century Team, presented by sap SO. Voting conducted on both
- 13:58Speaker 1: NHL dot Com and x Fans will have one hundred
- 14:01Speaker 1: percent of the vote. Only players named to a club
- 14:04Speaker 1: first quarter Century team will be eligible four selection.
- 14:06Speaker 2: We're not gonna pick all twenty five JD.
- 14:08Speaker 1: How about a starting six for the past twenty five years?
- 14:12Speaker 2: Jeez, Louise, that's too tough off the god.
- 14:15Speaker 3: That's that's tough off the top. Crosby, Oh yeah, you know,
- 14:19Speaker 3: like I would recentcy biased like macar I think for
- 14:23Speaker 3: sure has got to be up there. Crosby, do you
- 14:27Speaker 3: I don't even know. Do you put Ovechkin in the
- 14:29Speaker 3: top six? I don't know, as he is the greatest golds,
- 14:31Speaker 3: you do, I would, yeah, okay, twenty five ors you
- 14:34Speaker 3: have I think you have to because there's nobody that's
- 14:36Speaker 3: done what he's done to you go a Vetchkin. Yeah,
- 14:38Speaker 3: then you're looking past twenty five years. I mean you are.
- 14:41Speaker 3: Are you considering your boy Chris Pronger or I gotta get.
- 14:44Speaker 2: Chris Pronger There absolutely.
- 14:45Speaker 3: No, not in the top six. You're nuts crazy, See
- 14:49Speaker 3: I baited. You need to into it.
- 14:51Speaker 1: You need my god, I have to tick.
- 14:53Speaker 3: The goddamn bad Yeah, Chris Barker, Yeah, I fan of
- 14:56Speaker 3: the show, fan of the show. No, McDavid, McDavid. And
- 15:01Speaker 3: then I'm probably, yeah, I need other defenseman, howbout the
- 15:04Speaker 3: day Chara? But yeah, but we argued that you argued
- 15:08Speaker 3: that Pronger is better than Charas exactly press. No, I
- 15:13Speaker 3: mean I would probably Scott Needemeyer would maybe be ahead
- 15:16Speaker 3: of that. But I'm like, oh no, Nick.
- 15:21Speaker 1: All right, So Listrom mccarr crossbild Vetchan McDavid. We just
- 15:24Speaker 1: did it on the fly.
- 15:26Speaker 3: Yeah, that's a good line too, decent line.
- 15:29Speaker 2: Just need a goalie.
- 15:30Speaker 1: Who's your pick?
- 15:30Speaker 2: The last twenty five years?
- 15:32Speaker 3: I mean, Broder is kind of one where you can
- 15:34Speaker 3: be like you have carry Price, which I don't think
- 15:36Speaker 3: many people might take, but carry Price for me is
- 15:39Speaker 3: one of the best goal is. You could argue hell
- 15:41Speaker 3: about right now. But because he's breaking records, I mean,
- 15:46Speaker 3: there's there's so many goalies of cheez, let's go with Marty.
- 15:50Speaker 3: Then we'll say Marty, yeah, so just I'll let's just
- 15:53Speaker 3: have Yeah, let's just let's do this off the top
- 15:55Speaker 3: and just have people skewer me.
- 15:58Speaker 1: We didn't have enough time to prep for it in faris.
- 16:00Speaker 2: We just we're kind of throwing it out there.
- 16:02Speaker 4: So that's why.
- 16:02Speaker 3: No, there's Yeah, there's so many guys. I mean it
- 16:05Speaker 3: just you think about twenty five years, it becomes very much.
- 16:08Speaker 3: I'm interested to see the more. The thing I'm more
- 16:10Speaker 3: interested to see is that it's one hundred percent fan voting. Yes,
- 16:13Speaker 3: so it's the big markets are gonna win. So it's
- 16:15Speaker 3: really gonna be good guy. There's gonna be guys like yeah, like.
- 16:18Speaker 1: Austin Matthews gonna make it. All the Leaf fans will
- 16:20Speaker 1: vote for him.
- 16:21Speaker 3: Yeah, that's it. Like the biggest markets will win. That's
- 16:23Speaker 3: what I'm worried about. When they do the all fan
- 16:25Speaker 3: but again, you can't trust the writers. They stinks.
- 16:39Speaker 7: Well.
- 16:39Speaker 1: They say you should never meet your heroes, but they
- 16:41Speaker 1: never met Sean McDonough one of the most recognizable voices
- 16:44Speaker 1: in sport.
- 16:44Speaker 2: He calls everything. He's always done so at a high level.
- 16:47Speaker 1: I remember calling Boston Red Sox games, Monday Night football,
- 16:50Speaker 1: the world stories, US Open Tennis Tournament, Winter Olympics, the
- 16:52Speaker 1: Master's March, Madness, the college world stories. I had the
- 16:56Speaker 1: great delight of working with Sean on college football at ESPN,
- 16:59Speaker 1: where he became friends. And honestly, the inter of you
- 17:01Speaker 1: today should be about four nations being underway, in the
- 17:03Speaker 1: fact he'll be called the final hopefully Canada USA on ESPN.
- 17:07Speaker 1: But more importantly I want to talk with the fact
- 17:08Speaker 1: that Toronto Blue Jays will always be etched in my
- 17:11Speaker 1: memory with Sean mcdonnough because he called it back in
- 17:13Speaker 1: ninety two, ninety three.
- 17:14Speaker 2: And still world champions, your Toronto Blue Jays.
- 17:17Speaker 1: The great Sean McDonough joins us now for some Kelly
- 17:18Speaker 1: Gruber and pap Border stories. Sean, it is so great
- 17:21Speaker 1: to see you, my friend.
- 17:22Speaker 8: Well, nice to see you and the rest of the
- 17:25Speaker 8: team here. Thank you for that introduction. I appreciate your
- 17:28Speaker 8: reading that just as I wrote it out for you.
- 17:30Speaker 8: And we're off to a flying start.
- 17:34Speaker 6: You weren't even alive in nineteen ninety two in ninety three,
- 17:36Speaker 6: Where were you.
- 17:37Speaker 3: Kidding getting into hockey a little bit? Sean? You know,
- 17:40Speaker 3: your lead broadcaster with ESPN and twenty twenty one. How
- 17:44Speaker 3: kind of is it getting back into hockey? And what
- 17:47Speaker 3: have you seen from the game, how it's evolved, and
- 17:50Speaker 3: how has that evolved for you as a broadcaster.
- 17:53Speaker 6: Yeah, you know it was.
- 17:54Speaker 8: We were out for about seventeen years, and I got
- 17:56Speaker 8: a kind of a rude lesson opening night in Tampa
- 18:00Speaker 8: Bay when we got back in because the game was
- 18:02Speaker 8: so much faster than it was seventeen years ago, the
- 18:05Speaker 8: last time I had done an NHL game. You know,
- 18:07Speaker 8: it used to be you could look down at your
- 18:09Speaker 8: chart and oh, who's number seventeen again? Yeah, And I
- 18:13Speaker 8: have a good story about him, and I'm going to
- 18:15Speaker 8: start telling this story as soon as I find it
- 18:18Speaker 8: on my chart, And oh what happened? There's a goal?
- 18:21Speaker 8: Oh that was fast? So yeah, I kind of learned fast.
- 18:26Speaker 6: You know.
- 18:27Speaker 8: The game has changed a lot for the better, you know,
- 18:30Speaker 8: and we saw that here in Montreal and opening night
- 18:34Speaker 8: of the of the four nations face off.
- 18:37Speaker 6: You know the to here.
- 18:39Speaker 8: John Cooper has been around obviously for a long time, say,
- 18:41Speaker 8: you know, that was the fastest game he's ever seen.
- 18:45Speaker 8: And there's a guy who's coaching Stanley Cup finals and yeah,
- 18:48Speaker 8: so the game, it's the game's better than ever. You
- 18:51Speaker 8: guys know it because you follow it every day. And
- 18:54Speaker 8: obviously JD you played at a high level. You know,
- 18:56Speaker 8: it's just players are bigger, faster, stronger, more skilled, and
- 19:00Speaker 8: I think the game's better. The rules are better. You know,
- 19:03Speaker 8: the rules kind of support that. So it's been awesome.
- 19:07Speaker 8: Hopefully I'm up to speed now and looking forward to
- 19:11Speaker 8: this tournament.
- 19:12Speaker 1: Part of what makes your call so great, Sean is
- 19:14Speaker 1: that there's a really musicality to your voice, Like you
- 19:17Speaker 1: don't have to be a sports fan to enjoy listening
- 19:19Speaker 1: to Sean mcdonnal broadcast. And I can't imitate it, but
- 19:21Speaker 1: it would be something of the effect of you know
- 19:23Speaker 1: Crosby of the Platform, Corl Harbor and Nova Scotia, Like
- 19:25Speaker 1: your voice will rise as the play goes. Where did
- 19:28Speaker 1: you learn that from? How are you able to do that?
- 19:31Speaker 6: Like?
- 19:31Speaker 1: How did that style develop.
- 19:33Speaker 6: You know what, I don't know. I just think it came.
- 19:35Speaker 8: And actually I don't know if it's from watching you know,
- 19:37Speaker 8: the great hockey announcers that I watched as a kid.
- 19:40Speaker 6: You know, I'm up here with with Ray Ferraro, and
- 19:42Speaker 6: I was telling Ray's story. You know, when I was
- 19:44Speaker 6: first starting out out of college, one of my first.
- 19:47Speaker 8: Jobs was hosting the Boston Bruins between periods, pregame, post game.
- 19:52Speaker 6: And I got the call, and I.
- 19:53Speaker 8: Was doing a lot of college hockey on nesson, and
- 19:55Speaker 8: that's been you know, the thread through the whole damn.
- 19:58Speaker 6: So I'm here and you.
- 19:59Speaker 8: Know I called games that Mike Sullivan played and it
- 20:01Speaker 8: bu and David Quinn and John Hines and Keith could
- 20:04Speaker 8: chuck and you know, so you know they're still here.
- 20:08Speaker 8: You know, it's some of us are in our sixties now.
- 20:11Speaker 8: So you know, I was doing a lot of college
- 20:14Speaker 8: hockey and I got a call, Hey, Fred Cusick isn't
- 20:16Speaker 8: feeling well and we need you to kind of hurry
- 20:20Speaker 8: up to Montreal. So the first NHL game I did
- 20:23Speaker 8: for the Bruins was at the old Montreal Forum and
- 20:27Speaker 8: it was just such a thrill. But I think I
- 20:29Speaker 8: watched Fred, you know, I kind of referred to it
- 20:31Speaker 8: as a crescendo style. You know that you should build
- 20:35Speaker 8: up to the big moment. If you come on the
- 20:36Speaker 8: air and you're screaming from the drop of the puck,
- 20:39Speaker 8: then where do you go when something really exciting happens?
- 20:43Speaker 6: You know? So I think you need to leave it
- 20:45Speaker 6: to me. It should just be to answer your question
- 20:47Speaker 6: after a lot of words. You know, it should be.
- 20:50Speaker 8: Instinctive, right, I mean, you shouldn't have to think about,
- 20:53Speaker 8: oh boy, this is exciting. So maybe I'm supposed to
- 20:56Speaker 8: yell louder now, or get more excited, or use really
- 20:59Speaker 8: flowery language. You know, you don't have time to do that.
- 21:02Speaker 8: And I think, you know, hopefully it's just you go
- 21:05Speaker 8: with the moment.
- 21:06Speaker 3: Really, is is there anything like kind of unwritten rules
- 21:12Speaker 3: that you don't do? You know, I just got into
- 21:14Speaker 3: you know, I do. I do some of the Sharks
- 21:16Speaker 3: play by play, and you know, I work with Dan Rusenowski,
- 21:19Speaker 3: who's fantastic, and Randy Hahn and and there's like some
- 21:23Speaker 3: little nuanced things that you really have. I never knew
- 21:26Speaker 3: when when starting a play by play, like not stepping
- 21:28Speaker 3: on a goal and as just a reactionary thing. As
- 21:30Speaker 3: a player, I'm like, oh my god, that's a great goal.
- 21:32Speaker 3: But you're supposed to kind of stay silent, let you
- 21:34Speaker 3: take the call because that's your moment, and that's your
- 21:37Speaker 3: moment to kind of describe the goal and in such
- 21:39Speaker 3: a beautiful way. So is there any kind of other
- 21:41Speaker 3: unwritten rules or anything that where you're like, hey, this
- 21:43Speaker 3: is a big no no that you learned early on.
- 21:46Speaker 8: Uh, well, it's kind of to your question about getting
- 21:50Speaker 8: back in four years ago. You know, one of the
- 21:53Speaker 8: no nos now for me is storytelling all the pucks
- 21:55Speaker 8: in play. You know, everything needs to be one sentence.
- 21:58Speaker 6: You know, it's and.
- 22:00Speaker 8: Then I actually learned this doing the Masters when in
- 22:04Speaker 8: the late nineties and the late great Frank Chuckinnion basically
- 22:07Speaker 8: invented golf on TV on CBS. He brought me on
- 22:10Speaker 8: to do the Masters, and he said, you're a great storyteller.
- 22:13Speaker 8: We want you to be a storyteller. But in golf,
- 22:15Speaker 8: when we go to you on your whole, we never
- 22:17Speaker 8: know how long we're going to stay. You know, it
- 22:19Speaker 8: might be live and Tiger Woods is putting to take
- 22:22Speaker 8: the lead if we might come to you on tape,
- 22:25Speaker 8: and because the tape shots only twenty seconds, we're only
- 22:27Speaker 8: staying with you for twenty seconds because the tape ends,
- 22:29Speaker 8: so we have to go somewhere else. So I want
- 22:31Speaker 8: you to tell stories, but every story needs to be
- 22:33Speaker 8: able to end at the end of every sentence.
- 22:36Speaker 6: And he gave me an exam.
- 22:37Speaker 8: We said, I talked to Tiger Woods on the practice
- 22:39Speaker 8: range today and he told me he's.
- 22:40Speaker 6: Using a new putter. Right, you could stop there, but
- 22:43Speaker 6: if you have more time. The reason he's using a
- 22:45Speaker 6: new putter is, you know, is.
- 22:46Speaker 8: Back's bothering, so he wanted a longer putter so he
- 22:48Speaker 8: doesn't have to crouch over quite as whatever.
- 22:50Speaker 6: You know.
- 22:51Speaker 8: So, and it's really a great lesson that I've tried
- 22:54Speaker 8: to take with me through all the other sports and especially.
- 22:57Speaker 6: Now in hockey.
- 22:57Speaker 8: You know, we have a million notes on every player
- 23:01Speaker 8: on all four of these teams in the fort Nations.
- 23:03Speaker 8: I mean, you could just spend the whole game reading
- 23:05Speaker 8: notes and not describe the play. But you know, the
- 23:08Speaker 8: key is to weave them in when it makes sense.
- 23:11Speaker 8: The other challenge is, I'm sure you're experiencing Jason is.
- 23:15Speaker 8: In hockey, there's no natural rhythm.
- 23:18Speaker 6: To when the analyst comes in. When the puck's in play.
- 23:21Speaker 8: Right, in football, they run a play, the play ends
- 23:24Speaker 8: for the most part of the analyst comes in.
- 23:25Speaker 6: Here's why that play did or didn't work. Here's the replay.
- 23:28Speaker 6: If there was nothing play, it might be a graphic
- 23:30Speaker 6: or something.
- 23:31Speaker 8: And then you go back to the snap and the
- 23:32Speaker 8: play by play guy comes in hockey, you know, the
- 23:35Speaker 8: play might go up and down for ten minutes. So
- 23:38Speaker 8: and Ray Ferraro is down between the benches. He's not
- 23:41Speaker 8: right next to me, so I can't look at him like, hey,
- 23:43Speaker 8: do you want to come in?
- 23:44Speaker 6: Should I stop for a second? You know you could
- 23:47Speaker 6: go like this, you send him a player now to
- 23:49Speaker 6: the bench. So so you know, there you develop some cues.
- 23:53Speaker 8: I try to every now and then pause, especially when
- 23:55Speaker 8: the defenseman's behind the net.
- 23:57Speaker 6: There's at the game, the Sweden Canada game.
- 24:00Speaker 3: But that was incredible.
- 24:03Speaker 6: Yeah, I texted John Cooper and I watched after the game.
- 24:06Speaker 8: I watched the Kadian TV here does a great job
- 24:09Speaker 8: of carrying like every player and coach press conference live
- 24:12Speaker 8: or they turned it around fast. So I was watching
- 24:15Speaker 8: Cooper and as you guys know, he's just the best.
- 24:17Speaker 8: I mean, he was born to sit at the podium
- 24:20Speaker 8: after the game and answer questions and talk about it.
- 24:23Speaker 8: And so I sent him a note about, Hey, what
- 24:25Speaker 8: a special night and what a great game, congrats on
- 24:27Speaker 8: the wind and I just want to say, like you're
- 24:30Speaker 8: the best ever in the postgame presser.
- 24:33Speaker 6: And he sent me a text back and it was
- 24:36Speaker 6: like he said.
- 24:39Speaker 8: What a special night, simply wow, exclamation point, exclamation point
- 24:44Speaker 8: expa and that typical coop. Right, he just summarized it perfectly.
- 24:48Speaker 8: So yeah, it's a blessing to be able to do this.
- 24:52Speaker 1: Sean will be calling the championship game on ESPN February twentieth,
- 24:55Speaker 1: and what's been a legendary career. Perhaps well the highlights
- 24:58Speaker 1: was what happened just a year ago. Interview with WCVB
- 25:01Speaker 1: and Boston before Game seven, Sean predicted only the David
- 25:04Speaker 1: Pashenaw will make an impact, but the Bruins would win
- 25:07Speaker 1: on a key goal by Pasta. How great was that
- 25:10Speaker 1: to call the winning goal shot?
- 25:12Speaker 6: I was totally lucky.
- 25:13Speaker 8: You know, Uh, Duke Castiglione, who's the anchor on w
- 25:17Speaker 8: CVB with Channel five Boston ABC, if I have known
- 25:20Speaker 8: him since literally he was probably eight years old because
- 25:23Speaker 8: his dad, the legendary Joe Castiglione, is a Red Sox
- 25:26Speaker 8: broadcaster just retired and I just you know, won the
- 25:29Speaker 8: Ford Frick Award in the Baseball Hall of Fame and
- 25:32Speaker 8: just the nicest man on the planet too. So anyway,
- 25:34Speaker 8: we're going to do that game seven Toronto and Boston.
- 25:36Speaker 8: There's so many storylines on both sides, right, I mean,
- 25:39Speaker 8: it's whoever loses, this is going to be excruciating. And
- 25:43Speaker 8: uh so, Duke says, Hey, we got a half our
- 25:46Speaker 8: pregame show leading in the game.
- 25:47Speaker 6: Will you come on for a couple of mens? Sure?
- 25:49Speaker 6: So I come on, and he know, I don't know
- 25:51Speaker 6: the leg here, I don't know the questions. I'm very upset.
- 25:53Speaker 6: I asked you guys to submit these in writing forty
- 25:55Speaker 6: eight hours in a dance. So I'm doing my best
- 25:58Speaker 6: to wing it.
- 25:59Speaker 8: But so at the end, Duke says, oh, you know,
- 26:02Speaker 8: give me a prediction for tonight, and you know it's
- 26:05Speaker 8: I'm from Boston, It's it's.
- 26:07Speaker 6: The home audit.
- 26:08Speaker 8: I'm not going, Hey, Toronto is going to win five
- 26:10Speaker 8: to one and Jim mccummery is gonna get fired after
- 26:12Speaker 8: the game, So you know, I just you know, Pasta,
- 26:17Speaker 8: it's easy pick, right, he's their best player, I said,
- 26:20Speaker 8: And I thought it would be a close game. So yeah,
- 26:23Speaker 8: it's gonna be close game. They're going to win it
- 26:24Speaker 8: on my Pasta. So then he scores an overtime and yeah,
- 26:30Speaker 8: I was proud of that call. You know, there's some
- 26:31Speaker 8: nights you're like, oh God, why did I say that
- 26:35Speaker 8: or do that? But that one was, you know, And
- 26:38Speaker 8: to j D's point earlier about think you know, call
- 26:40Speaker 8: the goal, like call the big moment and shut up.
- 26:44Speaker 3: Sean, is there a call like, I know you've done
- 26:47Speaker 3: so many so it's probably so hard to pick one,
- 26:50Speaker 3: But is there a call that? And maybe you go
- 26:53Speaker 3: by sport, but that that really sticks with you as
- 26:56Speaker 3: something that maybe not your specific call it because I
- 26:59Speaker 3: know you you become kind of infamous a little bit
- 27:01Speaker 3: with the voice cracks, which I find it's just the
- 27:03Speaker 3: best thing ever emotion wise. But is there any kind
- 27:06Speaker 3: of call where you were like this was just perfect?
- 27:09Speaker 8: You know, some of the voice crack moments, I think
- 27:11Speaker 8: they add to people remembering the moment. You know, the Michigan,
- 27:15Speaker 8: Michigan State muff punt, you know, all Michigan do is
- 27:19Speaker 8: get the pun off and they win the game.
- 27:21Speaker 3: And heartbreak.
- 27:22Speaker 6: Oh he has trouble with the snacks free, you know.
- 27:26Speaker 8: And but it goes back to what we talked about here.
- 27:29Speaker 8: Your call should reflect what's happening. And you know, I've
- 27:33Speaker 8: done a million college football games. We've all watched a
- 27:36Speaker 8: million football games. That's still the most shocking, stunning ending
- 27:40Speaker 8: I've ever seen. I mean, Michigan had the game won,
- 27:42Speaker 8: we were all but saying, what a win for Jim Harbaugh.
- 27:45Speaker 8: I think it was his first year as the coach,
- 27:47Speaker 8: you know, and against the rival, and and Chris Bally
- 27:51Speaker 8: kept saying, you know, if you're a punter, just catch
- 27:53Speaker 8: the punt one step and kick it, you know, don't
- 27:55Speaker 8: even just Michigan State had eleven, they didn't have anybody
- 27:59Speaker 8: back for the punt. If they just got the punt off,
- 28:01Speaker 8: the game's over. And with hindsight, like I talked to
- 28:04Speaker 8: both John Harrball is one of my best friends, and
- 28:06Speaker 8: he and Jim, you know, they've all talked about with hindsight, Now,
- 28:09Speaker 8: you coach, guy, hold everybody right, the telligences de lenment,
- 28:13Speaker 8: just tackle everybody, they throw a holding penalty, will punt again,
- 28:16Speaker 8: you know.
- 28:17Speaker 6: But so that was one.
- 28:21Speaker 8: You know that I think the hopefully the call match
- 28:24Speaker 8: the moment I had a guy in the Atlanta airport
- 28:27Speaker 8: say you have a minute. You got to listen to this,
- 28:30Speaker 8: and he played like his voicemail that plays when you
- 28:33Speaker 8: call him, you get his answer machine, and it was
- 28:35Speaker 8: my call out of the play again, it's like, you know,
- 28:39Speaker 8: this is ken ghost party, you know, leave a message
- 28:42Speaker 8: or whatever it was. Yeah, you know, and then Michigan people,
- 28:46Speaker 8: you know, don't kill the messenger. We don't control what happens.
- 28:49Speaker 8: You know, I would have yelled the exact same way
- 28:52Speaker 8: if it happened the other way, you know, if the
- 28:54Speaker 8: Michigan guy ran the ball in and Michigan State lost
- 28:58Speaker 8: in excruciating fashion.
- 29:00Speaker 1: Yeah, I do want to say, Sean, somebody who knows
- 29:02Speaker 1: you and your family. Of course, the linn it from
- 29:04Speaker 1: your dad will and the relationship with your brothers and
- 29:07Speaker 1: your sister. But I was really taken by what you
- 29:09Speaker 1: said on Jimmy Traina's podcast with your aunt TUTSI.
- 29:12Speaker 2: So I want you to talk about this because.
- 29:14Speaker 1: It's important for somebody knows somebody who's respected as you.
- 29:17Speaker 1: It's not the most likely suspects are so critical in
- 29:20Speaker 1: your life, so I wanted you talk a little but Joyan,
- 29:22Speaker 1: I think it's a really heartwarming story.
- 29:23Speaker 8: Oh well, thank you appreciate it, you know, because she
- 29:26Speaker 8: really is the most important person in my life.
- 29:29Speaker 6: I'll give the reader's digest version. When I was a kid, I.
- 29:32Speaker 8: Was the eldest of three at the time, my dad,
- 29:36Speaker 8: as you mentioned, sports.
- 29:37Speaker 6: Writer for the Boston called travel a lot. And my
- 29:39Speaker 6: parents get divorced.
- 29:40Speaker 8: My mom had some significant issues that prevented her from
- 29:43Speaker 8: having custody of the kids. So the judge said, you know,
- 29:47Speaker 8: I inclined to give you these kids, but you travel
- 29:49Speaker 8: all the time. They were eleven, nine and seven. You
- 29:51Speaker 8: know what's going to happen when you have to go
- 29:52Speaker 8: to Minnesota to cover of the Red Sox and the
- 29:54Speaker 8: Minnesota Twins. So he was one of nine. One of
- 29:58Speaker 8: his eldest sisters, sister Mary Martina, known to us as
- 30:02Speaker 8: Aunt Tutsi, was a nickname from her childhood by Irish
- 30:04Speaker 8: grandmother when she had her first teak and look at
- 30:07Speaker 8: the little tutsy because that's and she became on twitsy.
- 30:11Speaker 8: So she was a Catholic nun, a sister of Notre Dame.
- 30:16Speaker 8: To my bias for Notre Dame, she went into the common.
- 30:20Speaker 8: When she's eighteen years old, she went to Japan as
- 30:22Speaker 8: a missionary and she never came back. She was there
- 30:24Speaker 8: for like twenty eight years. So my dad called her, Hey,
- 30:27Speaker 8: here's the plan.
- 30:28Speaker 6: You need to come back, move in with us. We
- 30:31Speaker 6: have as good for chunnel thing. It's luck. I think
- 30:35Speaker 6: it was meant to be.
- 30:36Speaker 8: We had an all girls Catholic high school in our town,
- 30:39Speaker 8: Notre Dame Academy, which was run by the sisters of
- 30:41Speaker 8: Notre Dame. So come back, move in with us, help
- 30:43Speaker 8: me raise the kids. And she saved our lives. I mean,
- 30:47Speaker 8: we were really broken in a lot of ways and
- 30:51Speaker 8: she just nurtured us, loved us, showed us what it's
- 30:54Speaker 8: like to have God at the center of your life
- 30:57Speaker 8: and how you live life, and that's the case how
- 31:00Speaker 8: you treat people and exist in the world.
- 31:03Speaker 6: So yeah, she's a hero.
- 31:04Speaker 8: You know, I said in that interview at Man and
- 31:07Speaker 8: you know, you know, and I don't mean to turn
- 31:09Speaker 8: this into the Billy Graham Gospel Hour here, but the
- 31:13Speaker 8: you know, to me, to be a Christian is to
- 31:16Speaker 8: follow the example of Christ, right and what.
- 31:18Speaker 6: If you believe what I believe, he gave up his
- 31:21Speaker 6: life for us. What did she do? That's exactly what
- 31:24Speaker 6: she did.
- 31:24Speaker 8: I mean, she loved her life over there, that's where
- 31:27Speaker 8: her whole life was geared to her that, but she
- 31:29Speaker 8: gave it up because she thought God was calling her
- 31:31Speaker 8: to come raise us. And that's what she did. And
- 31:34Speaker 8: thank you for asking about you know, Like when I
- 31:36Speaker 8: first started on this and people would recognize me as
- 31:38Speaker 8: in the Red Sox Games.
- 31:39Speaker 6: Of twenty five, people would make a big deal.
- 31:42Speaker 8: About something, I thought, you know, what, what I do
- 31:44Speaker 8: really isn't that important, you know, compared to what people
- 31:46Speaker 8: like her every day. So yeah, the most important person
- 31:51Speaker 8: ever in my life. And I say that as someone
- 31:55Speaker 8: who idolizes my dad. I mean my dad, you know,
- 31:57Speaker 8: And you know I don't mean to diminish my dad.
- 31:59Speaker 8: And my dad was a superior human being by every
- 32:02Speaker 8: standard as well.
- 32:04Speaker 1: Amazing that obviously, like your father was such a legendary
- 32:08Speaker 1: favor with those that don't know it, literally changed television
- 32:10Speaker 1: broadcasting by being an insider going from print to television.
- 32:13Speaker 2: Last story, then let's.
- 32:14Speaker 1: Make it about your dad, particularly how he would bait
- 32:16Speaker 1: the Boston Red Sox with some great nicknames.
- 32:19Speaker 6: Oh jeez.
- 32:20Speaker 8: Yeah, And it was when I was doing the games,
- 32:23Speaker 8: so it wasn't doing me any favors.
- 32:26Speaker 6: And I would say to many fan's.
- 32:27Speaker 8: Dad, did you have to call Roger Clemens, the Texas
- 32:30Speaker 8: con man. Yeah, you have to call move on mow Money,
- 32:37Speaker 8: you know, because Moe was always threatening to leave.
- 32:40Speaker 6: And I don't know, but uh yeah.
- 32:43Speaker 8: And I would have the players come over to me.
- 32:46Speaker 8: Sometimes they get mad at me, and I would say
- 32:48Speaker 8: to them, I don't know if you have a phone,
- 32:51Speaker 8: but here's my dad's number. I have nothing to do
- 32:54Speaker 8: with this, you know, just like if you had a
- 32:57Speaker 8: problem with something I said on one of these games,
- 32:59Speaker 8: I wouldn't expect.
- 33:00Speaker 6: You to call my dad and yell at him. You know,
- 33:02Speaker 6: I'm right here.
- 33:03Speaker 8: So yeah, but I had a few players over the
- 33:07Speaker 8: years come up to me and tell me my dad
- 33:09Speaker 8: was sometimes I'm not very nice names, but.
- 33:13Speaker 6: Yeah. So people said like, did your dad help you
- 33:17Speaker 6: along the way. I'm like, yeah, I'm.
- 33:18Speaker 8: Pretty sure he probably helped me get a start at missing,
- 33:22Speaker 8: but I think he's gotten me fired twice.
- 33:24Speaker 6: So you know, so it's it probably even now, it's
- 33:30Speaker 6: at some point, you know, it's uh. I remember what
- 33:33Speaker 6: you know when.
- 33:33Speaker 8: You know you have no chance? Right, I'm thirty, I
- 33:37Speaker 8: get hired by CBS to do the World Series. And
- 33:40Speaker 8: I'm at the post office in my little town outside
- 33:43Speaker 8: Boston and a guy can times.
- 33:44Speaker 6: She's, hey, congratulations, I just read that your dad helps
- 33:48Speaker 6: you get a big job CBS. You're going to be
- 33:51Speaker 6: calling the World Series.
- 33:52Speaker 8: Yeah, my dad decides who does the World Series for CBS.
- 33:55Speaker 7: He just.
- 33:58Speaker 8: He just calls belk Armisan and says, hey, my kid's
- 34:02Speaker 8: okay at baseball. Maybe shoul give them a chance. That's
- 34:04Speaker 8: what we got that little you know series in the fall.
- 34:07Speaker 8: Maybe you should give him a shot. But I do
- 34:09Speaker 8: take credit ad Man for the Toronto Blue Jays did
- 34:13Speaker 8: the series? Did they win a World Series before nineteen
- 34:17Speaker 8: ninety two? To take all that kind in the World
- 34:20Speaker 8: Series for two years ninety two and ninety three, do
- 34:22Speaker 8: we know what happened both times?
- 34:26Speaker 3: Is that you got balloons?
- 34:28Speaker 4: Yeah, look at that, you got balloons. You gave the
- 34:29Speaker 4: peace sign, He gave some balloons.
- 34:31Speaker 3: Call no, that's that's that's some weird hand thing with
- 34:36Speaker 3: with phones. Now, if you do like a peace sign
- 34:38Speaker 3: or like it, combs up balloons that'll come up behind him.
- 34:41Speaker 6: Blue Jays were celebrating again.
- 34:43Speaker 3: That's but that's like that was perfect poetically died just
- 34:46Speaker 3: I mean.
- 34:46Speaker 8: God has a hand and everything right on sending balloons
- 34:52Speaker 8: from heaven.
- 34:53Speaker 1: I love it. Four Nations Final again is going to
- 34:56Speaker 1: be on February twentieth. Let us hope it's gonna be Canada, Usa,
- 34:59Speaker 1: the great Sean McDonough. By the way, Sean makes us
- 35:02Speaker 1: home sometimes in Arizona. I'll be there for spring train.
- 35:04Speaker 1: So we're gonna get it. We're gonna get a dinner. Me
- 35:05Speaker 1: McDonough demurs. Together, I'm gonna tell more it's gonna be great, awesome,
- 35:10Speaker 1: so much.
- 35:11Speaker 6: Thanks for having me on. Guys.
- 35:20Speaker 1: We'll get to cinepol in sixty in just a second
- 35:22Speaker 1: once again thanks to Sean mcdonney.
- 35:24Speaker 2: He was fabuloss hopeful.
- 35:24Speaker 1: We'll get some golf out there in a z but
- 35:27Speaker 1: major news right now, that's just gonna be a remake
- 35:29Speaker 1: of Young Buddy kidding me. This is a movie which
- 35:32Speaker 1: has been blowup by hockey people for a long time.
- 35:34Speaker 2: The fact there's gonna be a remake.
- 35:35Speaker 1: Giti, you can still skate, you can still play, You're
- 35:38Speaker 1: a charismatic guy. You're married to an actress. For God's sakes,
- 35:40Speaker 1: Joe can help you run lines. We gotta get you
- 35:42Speaker 1: involved here in young Blood the.
- 35:43Speaker 3: Remake, Yeah, I mean everything's lined up for me to
- 35:47Speaker 3: being this. I just don't understand. I do could put
- 35:49Speaker 3: on a French accent. I'll act thish, I'll act my
- 35:53Speaker 3: ass off in this. Kidding me again they bring in,
- 35:58Speaker 3: don't worry. I'll get this. My skates will be good,
- 36:01Speaker 3: the boots are still good, my hips are loose. Throw
- 36:03Speaker 3: me in. I could do the old young Blood triple deep,
- 36:06Speaker 3: but that was my That's my favorite hockey movie growing up.
- 36:09Speaker 3: A lot of people will say slap shot or and
- 36:12Speaker 3: Slapshot is up there, But young Blood for me is
- 36:15Speaker 3: there is so much wrong with that movie. That's why
- 36:18Speaker 3: it made it so good. So much wrong.
- 36:20Speaker 1: So cameras have just rolled on the movie and Hamilton
- 36:22Speaker 1: and Barry Ontario, with Hubert Davis directing. Young Blood follows
- 36:26Speaker 1: hockey pology dean Youngblood who joins the Hamilton Mustangs and
- 36:30Speaker 1: discovers he must face off against toxic behavior on the
- 36:33Speaker 1: ice and within himself. The original film star Rob lo
- 36:36Speaker 1: O Patrick Swayze can of Reeves in his feature film debut.
- 36:39Speaker 2: Low and Reeves are not on the bench to return.
- 36:42Speaker 1: Of course, Swayze has passed away, So I mean the cast,
- 36:45Speaker 1: including Ashton James as Dean young Blood, Blair Underwood, love
- 36:49Speaker 1: for him from Ellie Law. He was in Long Legs
- 36:51Speaker 1: with Nicholas Cage's pastor Deep Impact. He's playing the father,
- 36:54Speaker 1: Sean Doyle, Alexander McDowell. Again, a lot of these actors
- 36:56Speaker 1: are not major names. We gonna get Jason Burg's in here,
- 36:58Speaker 1: and this is one of the quotes. Young Blood is
- 37:00Speaker 1: not homage the movies of the eighties, but are reorienting
- 37:03Speaker 1: of these films and ideas. Nice especially say that, especially
- 37:06Speaker 1: those about masculinity, which my generation grew up on throughout
- 37:09Speaker 1: our prog excuse me. Through a protagonist Dean Young Bob
- 37:12Speaker 1: explore the nuances of the black masculine experience via the camaraderie, brutality,
- 37:17Speaker 1: and triumph for the.
- 37:18Speaker 3: World of hockey.
- 37:19Speaker 1: Listen, you maybe you could play the white racist. If
- 37:21Speaker 1: it's a film about black masculine, you'd play the wine race.
- 37:24Speaker 1: Look at Timur's playing the heel, all right, that would
- 37:26Speaker 1: show your range.
- 37:27Speaker 7: At least.
- 37:28Speaker 3: I'm a huge wrestling fan, so you know, playing a
- 37:30Speaker 3: heel and not breaking kfe. It would be big thing
- 37:34Speaker 3: for me to do that.
- 37:35Speaker 2: No question.
- 37:36Speaker 1: All right, let's do cinephile in sixties. So I gotta
- 37:37Speaker 1: get a couple things out of the way here before
- 37:39Speaker 1: JD's fired up talk with a couple of films he saw,
- 37:41Speaker 1: and I think all people out there would be interested
- 37:43Speaker 1: in the moral Dilemma of Juror number two and also
- 37:45Speaker 1: a Different Man A twenty four. They always do fantastic stuff.
- 37:49Speaker 1: It was not only an outstanding weekend for the Philadelphia Eagles,
- 37:51Speaker 1: but also for my man, Sean Baker and the film Anora.
- 37:55Speaker 1: Prior to going into this Oscar race, if you looked
- 37:57Speaker 1: at the numbers, Emilia Perez thirteen Oscar nominations, the Brutalist one,
- 38:01Speaker 1: Best Picture of the Golden Globes, and Best Dictor for Brady.
- 38:04Speaker 2: So everyone thought they're the favorites.
- 38:06Speaker 1: Well, no, the PGA, the Producers Guild of America, gives
- 38:09Speaker 1: Best Picture to Anora. Let's go tell the DGA Directors
- 38:12Speaker 1: Guild of America gave their Best Director of War to
- 38:14Speaker 1: what not Brady Corbay for the Brutal List, but Sean
- 38:17Speaker 1: Baker for a Nora, Let's go tal. That means no
- 38:19Speaker 1: Nora is now in the driver's seat. They won the
- 38:21Speaker 1: PGA and the DGA. Get ready for the Oscars and
- 38:23Speaker 1: of course the Saga wards are still to come. A
- 38:26Speaker 1: couple of documentaries want to briefly mention her because Tao
- 38:28Speaker 1: wan Be mentioned. Sugarcane, which is an excellent movie for
- 38:31Speaker 1: all those especially in Canada listening. It's about the indigenous
- 38:34Speaker 1: communities who were in these residential schools in Canada from
- 38:37Speaker 1: a century ago. It's a harrowing story. It's very sad,
- 38:40Speaker 1: the treatment of Canon, the First Nation Shad. It's just
- 38:42Speaker 1: appalling what happened decades ago.
- 38:44Speaker 3: Yeah, that's it. That's uh. I'm actually even watched that
- 38:48Speaker 3: tal you liked it. I I'm into my docu series
- 38:51Speaker 3: kind of documentary phase right now. But yeah, that was
- 38:54Speaker 3: It was a brutal time and all that stuff coming
- 38:57Speaker 3: to light.
- 38:57Speaker 1: So yeah, it's Sugarcane's available on Hulu if you're gonna
- 39:01Speaker 1: watch it there, And honestly, it's a very very film.
- 39:04Speaker 1: And I saw No Other Land, which is fantastic Israeli
- 39:07Speaker 1: Palestinian collective and it's about what's happening right now.
- 39:10Speaker 2: In Gaza, which is just a heartbreaking movie to see.
- 39:13Speaker 1: It's a favorite right now to win Best Documentary at
- 39:15Speaker 1: the Academy Awards. And I mentioned Israeli Palestinian Collective. So
- 39:18Speaker 1: the story is they're focusing on this Palestinian village. But
- 39:21Speaker 1: what happens is an Israeli student for friends, well the
- 39:24Speaker 1: Palestinian guys, and they become friends. So basically he's trying
- 39:28Speaker 1: to say, listen, I'm trying to shed light on Palestinians.
- 39:30Speaker 1: What can I do to help you? That's how the
- 39:31Speaker 1: film actually came about. No distributor would touch the movie.
- 39:34Speaker 3: They're way too.
- 39:35Speaker 1: Skinn OF's like, eh, Israel Palestine. But then the Oscars.
- 39:38Speaker 1: This is why people say why why the Oscars matter?
- 39:39Speaker 1: Because of this, because they mom maated the movie for
- 39:41Speaker 1: Best Documentary. Now, it's going to be slow theatrical release,
- 39:44Speaker 1: it'll be hopefully streaming soon.
- 39:46Speaker 2: It's giving more attention what's happened to Israel Palestine?
- 39:48Speaker 1: And like I said, if it actually wins the Oscar,
- 39:50Speaker 1: if it wins her Best Documentary, a lot more people
- 39:52Speaker 1: are going to see No Other Land, which is a
- 39:53Speaker 1: great film. All right, let's get to Juror number two.
- 39:55Speaker 1: Clineaswood movie jad. He's made a lot of great movies,
- 39:59Speaker 1: especially later in his career. If you thought he peaked
- 40:01Speaker 1: with Unforgiven, for which he won obviously a bevy awards,
- 40:04Speaker 1: including Best Picture, you were wrong, Clint falls it up
- 40:06Speaker 1: a million dollar baby, great film. He's been churning him
- 40:09Speaker 1: out for a while, and yet Warner Brothers kind of
- 40:10Speaker 1: bar his journy number two. It came and went.
- 40:12Speaker 2: But I'm with you. I thought it was a very
- 40:13Speaker 2: good movie.
- 40:14Speaker 1: Speak to us about why he liked it, particularly the
- 40:16Speaker 1: moral dilemma of the film.
- 40:18Speaker 3: Yeah, I just you know, the way they shot this
- 40:21Speaker 3: and kind of almost getting to the ending at the
- 40:24Speaker 3: start with with the dilemmas thrown right into your lap
- 40:27Speaker 3: and it's how do I get out of this? Obviously
- 40:28Speaker 3: the don't want to give away the plot, but I
- 40:30Speaker 3: just love you know, not only that, but the showing
- 40:33Speaker 3: the flaws and the justice system and showing how some
- 40:36Speaker 3: people will overlook certain things because they're trying to get
- 40:41Speaker 3: ahead in life. But you know, having coming out as
- 40:44Speaker 3: a as a man with you know, I don't have
- 40:46Speaker 3: kids yet, but being in that you know, his wife's
- 40:49Speaker 3: pregnant and basically finds out if so facto that he
- 40:55Speaker 3: probably committed this crime, and what does he do? Does
- 40:58Speaker 3: he stay within this juror I don't know what would
- 41:02Speaker 3: you call that when the collective of Jersey just the jurors.
- 41:05Speaker 3: When he stays with the jurs does he prosecute this
- 41:08Speaker 3: guy that's obviously innocent, or does he try to do
- 41:12Speaker 3: the right thing get him off? Kind of tell oh, jesuis,
- 41:17Speaker 3: I'm falling over myself here. This is what I This
- 41:19Speaker 3: is what I look like when I'm trying to act smart.
- 41:20Speaker 3: I love your Yeah, thank you. It's this and that
- 41:23Speaker 3: towel's giving me the thumbs up. No are you? You know,
- 41:26Speaker 3: he's trying to absolve himself in his conscience. And then
- 41:29Speaker 3: it's kind of it goes it goes off the rails
- 41:32Speaker 3: a bit, but it's kind of one of those things
- 41:34Speaker 3: you're watching the movie and you're like, would I do
- 41:36Speaker 3: this in the same situation? Like what I just go
- 41:39Speaker 3: up to the you know, basically go up to the
- 41:42Speaker 3: judge and be like, I did it. This was my fault. Hey, sorry,
- 41:44Speaker 3: because knowing full well you're going to go to prison,
- 41:48Speaker 3: or because you have a kid on the way, You're like,
- 41:49Speaker 3: I have to predict my family at all costs. That
- 41:52Speaker 3: is the main thing, is protecting my family being there
- 41:54Speaker 3: for him. So it was it pulls in a lot
- 41:58Speaker 3: of directions. And that's what I love about Clint Eastwood,
- 42:00Speaker 3: that that old bastard. He's ninety four, he still does
- 42:04Speaker 3: great movies. Now like it and you talked about it.
- 42:07Speaker 3: We both said JK. Simmons, love JK Simmons, He's great.
- 42:10Speaker 1: Always a great way to two time guest talent.
- 42:12Speaker 3: Did you watch it?
- 42:15Speaker 4: I did. I liked it. I liked it and and
- 42:17Speaker 4: like it's a good watch.
- 42:19Speaker 5: Right, interesting backstory about I mean, the film was completely buried.
- 42:23Speaker 5: Most people didn't even know about it when it came out.
- 42:25Speaker 5: I watched it on Max and I thought it was.
- 42:27Speaker 5: I like a film that kind of presents a scenario
- 42:30Speaker 5: that makes you wonder, what would I do if I.
- 42:33Speaker 4: Was in that situation. That's sort of you know, that.
- 42:36Speaker 5: That personal judgment called questioning your own morality?
- 42:40Speaker 4: A good cast too, very good.
- 42:43Speaker 5: Yeah, oh yeah, so I didn't get much ward discussion obviously,
- 42:47Speaker 5: zero Again, Clint Eastwood still still making compelling films in
- 42:51Speaker 5: his nineties is pretty amazing.
- 42:53Speaker 1: And as far as what you would do The key
- 42:54Speaker 1: is you get the guy off because you don't want
- 42:56Speaker 1: an innocent man going to jail for God's sakes, and
- 42:58Speaker 1: then you run like the hills.
- 43:00Speaker 3: And he did not he he got he he did
- 43:03Speaker 3: not get him off, and then he didn't he stayed put.
