- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Well, if you've been looking to lose weight for a long time, you're going to know that there's all sorts of fancy medications out there that actually do a really good job at taking away your appetite.
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: The one thing that I noticed is I have a much higher level of addiction to things than some people, and there's probably people that are in worse straits than I am when it comes to it.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: But to be able to skip meals for me in the past was impossible because I just had this drive to eat.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: The more that I worked on it though, the more I was able to curb that drive.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: So the hunger didn't really bother me.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: It still persisted, but longer I went on these fasts when I was first starting it, actually I noticed that the hunger was not as pro prevalent.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: It didn't affect me as much.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: Now, of course, that's very mood dependent.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: So if I was depressed or sad, then it was a little bit more difficult.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: And as you work through that entire realm of feelings and emotions, of course, there's different things that are going to be drivers for people to eat on that emotional front.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: But I will tell you that these weight loss drugs, while I have not used them, I actually used a lot of fasting and lifting weights to get where I needed to get.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: It only took me 50-something years, but finally I was able to do it after being very obese for a very long time.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: If you are going to take these, if that's something that you're going to do, I would definitely talk to your medical doctor and find out if in fact it's a good idea.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: And that's of course with everything.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: So if you're going to fast for a long period of time, one of the big things that people should check for when it comes to fasting for longer periods of time is the way that it's going to impact the certain medications that you might be taking.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: Also, you should do some kind of an inventory as well with yourself, because you're going to have people around you that are that love you and care about you.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: And if you just go into it blindly without having the discussion with them, and of course not to have it so they try to dissuade you, but at least to have it so they might know what to be prepared for, that I think would be very, very helpful.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: Now, if you have been one of those people like I was that have tried many different diets many different ways, and now all of a sudden you're going to go from all those failures to not eating, that again is going to be another obstacle that you're more than likely going to have to overcome.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: Now, if you've tried everything, and this is a last resort, don't look at it as a last resort.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: Look at it as another tool in your toolbox.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: I find over time that there were a lot of things that really worked.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: Caloric restriction didn't work great for me.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: And then if you look at the studies, as you should, you'll find out that in fact with caloric restriction, your metabolism actually lowers.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: That's it.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: So instead of going up, it actually goes down.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: But with fasting, when you're not eating for a period of time, your actual metabolism increases, as does your growth hormone, which is beneficial because that's a muscle preserve preserving mechanism that your body has.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: Now, depending on what you're eating, how often, that's how hungry you're typically going to be when you start some kind of a fast.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: If you're going to go two or three days, you'll notice that the hungriest times for you will be when you normally ate.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: If you're a grazer, if you like to eat food all throughout the day, that's probably a big reason why you might be fat or obese.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: But that for that reason you'll notice that if you do start to not eat, you will see that you're going to be hungry quite frequently throughout the day because your body's just used to you having that kind of intake all throughout the day.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: Now, I've talked to a lot of people that are grazers that are around food if they work in an office type environment or even work from home or don't have a job but they are at home.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: They have access to that food typically, so they're going to have chips and cookies and these sorts of things that aren't going to do you any good at all.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: If it comes down to eating, and you are going to want to eat something after a fast, make sure that you don't break it with some horrible food.
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: Honor yourself enough, having gone through the fast to basically pick up good choices meat, eggs, fish, some vegetables, and I would be very limited on the fruit intake.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: No fruit juices, of course.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: If you are going to imbibe in fruit, you want to make sure that it's actually whole fruit that has all the fiber still attached with it, not some kind of a reduced into a juice.
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: Even if it has some of the remnants of the fruit in it, it's still not going to be good.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: You're going to really spike your blood sugar and insulin.
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: And realistically, for a lot of people, that happens to be the culprit, they have way too much storage, so active, in fact, that they have a lot of storage on their system in the way of body fat.
- 5:17SPEAKER_00: So now it's about accessing that body fat, and that's done by not eating for a period of time.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: It can also be done because when you're not eating for a period of time, you're switching fuel systems.
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: You're going from being a primary glucose or carb burner over to a fat burner, which you'll be able to burn the stored body fat on your frame.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: During any diet, even if you're going to be taking these weight loss medicines, which does curb your appetite to a point that you don't even feel like eating.
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: When you're taking those, some of the uh concern would be muscle loss.
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: So with all of them, I would grab a couple dumbbells.
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: If you're a female, maybe a couple 10-pound dumbbells.
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: If you're a male, maybe a couple 15 or 20 pound dumbbells, and you can do all sorts of exercises with those to be able to activate the muscle and keep that muscle active during the time that you're not eating or restricting your calories depending on whichever way it ends up being for you.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: I would do that because once that muscle activates, it's more difficult for the body to utilize it in the way of any kind of energy.
- 6:27SPEAKER_00: Now the body's really smart.
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: Usually it's going to target the fat, but there could be a little overall loss of muscle, and it's going to depend on whether or not that muscle is activated, how much muscle you may act may actually lose.
- 6:43SPEAKER_00: They do report, and when you see the statistics from people taking these weight loss medications, you'll notice that it's weight loss.
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: They're not talking about pure fat loss.
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: With the fasting, because of the uptake and growth hormone, and of course, do your own research.
- 7:01SPEAKER_00: But it seems like the majority of that weight that's lost is fat, a lot more so than if you try to do caloric restriction or you try to do any of those other types of diets, besides, of course, ketogenic.
- 7:15SPEAKER_00: But again, that's something that if you're interested in, you should do your research.
- 7:20SPEAKER_00: Talk to your medical professional.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: You can do it, you just have to not look at yourself as a failure if you don't make it, as you might have done many times in the past.
- 7:31SPEAKER_00: You having that conversation with yourself, loving yourself enough to know that if you do end up messing up the next plan, you start immediately.
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: Forgive yourself and move on.
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: Don't hold on to it.
- 7:45SPEAKER_00: Don't go into autopilot.
- 7:48SPEAKER_00: Don't just keep doing the things that you've been doing for a lot of years.
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: They're not working.
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: Accept it and try something new.
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: I'm Connor with Honor.
- 7:59SPEAKER_00: We'll see you in the next one.
