Transcript
- 0:09Hi, Miller Condon, Welcome the Iowa Sports Radio Network, Trent
- 0:13Condon and Ken Miller for the next two hours to talk sports
- 0:17with you. Thanks for starting your
- 0:18afternoon with us. Wherever you're listening on the
- 0:20Iowa Sports Radio Network or on the iheart app or on Des Moines
- 0:25Sports Station One O 6.3 KXNO. Here's what's coming up on our
- 0:30program. Former Hawkeye Wade looking bill
- 0:32will join Trent tonight in about 25 minutes.
- 0:34Take a look at Purdue and Iowa tonight.
- 0:36That is a 530 tip from Mackey. Purdue, a 10 1/2 point favorite
- 0:42to roughly 1010 1/2 is the number on that game tonight.
- 0:46So we'll take a look at Purdue and Iowa.
- 0:48Purdue's only lost once and Iowa walks in there tonight trying to
- 0:53stop a losing streak. We'll see how that goes.
- 0:55We'll talk to Wade looking Bill about it at 12:25.
- 0:58Then Adam Emmenecker, normally Tuesdays, but Wednesday this
- 1:01week and then he's back to Tuesdays, is our weekly Missouri
- 1:04Valley Conference spot with Adam Emmenecker.
- 1:07Drake on the road tonight. Southern Illinois is where they
- 1:10will play and they are a Six Point Rd. dog, five and a half
- 1:13six in that one. So we'll talk to Emmenecker
- 1:16about the Valley. Northern Iowa fell yesterday.
- 1:19That's coming up at 12:40. Five off to Chicago.
- 1:22We will go catch up with Cappy. He joins us every Wednesday to
- 1:26kick off the second hour of our show this week, no different,
- 1:29Cappy. A lot of Bears talk.
- 1:30Obviously that will rule the rules, but we'll get some Cubs
- 1:33talk in there as well with Bregman and the Nico Horner
- 1:36rumors out there. Cubs con coming up this weekend.
- 1:39And then finally, Vinnie Iyer who covers the NFL for The
- 1:43Sporting News. He will join us to help us opine
- 1:46more on the four divisional games that will take place this
- 1:49weekend. Trent will make some picks,
- 1:51Circus Sports sponsor those and we'll turn things over and off
- 1:53the bench with Lucas and Sean. How are you, Trent?
- 1:56Doing well. Good to see you again.
- 1:58It's been a what? An hour and a half?
- 2:00Well, not about an hour. Yeah, since we taped our
- 2:03Mediacom show, I guess maybe the focus of this opening statement.
- 2:06You can't win them all. Yes.
- 2:08Absolutely. And that was a very apparent
- 2:10very early in that basketball game.
- 2:11Look, it's we've been harping on it for weeks.
- 2:14Slow start, slow start, slow start.
- 2:16Iowa State's been good enough to find a way to to overcome those
- 2:20slow starts. Yesterday, they weren't.
- 2:22That was by far and away Kansas's best effort yesterday.
- 2:25But Dinga was unbelievable. Counsel White, Darren, Darren
- 2:28Peterson. It's a reason that he or Boozer
- 2:31will be the first overall pick in this upcoming draft.
- 2:34But Kansas looked like Kansas again.
- 2:36They flicked, they flexed. Fog Allen had the last laugh and
- 2:39a 21 point victory. So the take away to me as he saw
- 2:45something out of the bench and I believe this is something.
- 2:48For Iowa State. For Iowa State Bateman in
- 2:50particular. Bateman Heise had a couple of
- 2:53shots. Tom Nelson had a good drive.
- 2:56It just you need these guys. We've seen this.
- 3:00You can't go in and make a deep March run with way certainly
- 3:03that Iowa State's built. It's one thing you got a bunch
- 3:05of super NBA talents, you got a bunch of lottery picks, OK, you
- 3:08can go 6 deep and be fine. But for what Iowa State is, and
- 3:12Oh yes, their starters are better, you're going to need
- 3:15this bench. The grind through in foul
- 3:16trouble hits is it did yesterday with.
- 3:18Manchilovich, the Big 12 is too good.
- 3:20The Big 12 is too good to go through this 18 game and what
- 3:23was a 20 game gauntlet to get through this thing?
- 3:26And by the time you get to March and then you go to Kansas City
- 3:28and you play in the conference tournament, it's Iowa State.
- 3:30I'll probably make a run there and play 2-3 games down there.
- 3:34It's just too much. How many times have we seen this
- 3:36team historically and get knocked off after a great run in
- 3:39Kansas City because they're tired?
- 3:41You need to rely on the bench and yes, overall, playing your
- 3:45best seven guys is better than the 9:00.
- 3:47But when you look at it in the big picture, this is something
- 3:50that I believe is going to be a necessity.
- 3:52We're talking about a team that still has the talent to be in
- 3:55the lead 18 to get to a Final Four.
- 3:57It's still there, but in order to be at that place and be able
- 4:00to peak come the middle of March, you're going to have to
- 4:03rely on this bench more than TJ Otzelberger has before.
- 4:07And what we see, these guys can do it.
- 4:09It's not going to happen every time.
- 4:10There's going to be inconsistency, and that's part
- 4:12of being reserved, certainly even for a team this good.
- 4:15But you're going to have to rely on.
- 4:17Them Bateman might provide that consistencies more so than any,
- 4:20although maybe that's unfair. Still freshmen.
- 4:21I mean, we see the wall hit. I know you're right, but he's
- 4:24had his moments in the month of January.
- 4:26I thought he's had a pretty good month so far.
- 4:28Heise can finally he can. Heise, as you mentioned, made a
- 4:31couple of big threes in that game yesterday, but it was just
- 4:34like they they tried to make it close in the second they went.
- 4:38There was a stretch. There was like, what was it 44
- 4:41to 16 for the longest time late in the first time thinking, Oh
- 4:44my God, they're not going to get to 20.
- 4:46Well, they finally did as I think it was Toure and he didn't
- 4:49score a bunch. That might have been his only in
- 4:50fact, it is his only bucket that he stopped that too long
- 4:53scoreless drought in the first half.
- 4:55But look, fog Allen in in Kansas and it's just a very difficult
- 5:00place to walk into and win. And we've seen it in the past
- 5:04last night a bit. And I'll say this.
- 5:06I don't know what the secondary market was going to be for this
- 5:10Valentine's night special when Kansas comes to Iowa State.
- 5:14But that ticket, I think, is going to be very is that a what
- 5:17day of the week is Valentine's Day?
- 5:20Good question. Let's see.
- 5:21It is on a Saturday this year. So how about a three o'clock
- 5:25tip? Maybe a 5:00 tip?
- 5:27Restaurants and Ames? That'll be very difficult, yes,
- 5:30if indeed that's. Get your reservations.
- 5:31Down, get your reservations down and try and get those tickets
- 5:34now if you don't have them already.
- 5:36It's going to be banged out anyways.
- 5:37But Kansas with a little payback on on the Cyclone fan bases,
- 5:41Cyclone nations mind. We'll see.
- 5:43But yeah, I, I don't think that I look at this team any
- 5:46different today than I did yesterday.
- 5:50I I wish Jefferson would maybe get a little bit more under
- 5:53control early in that game. Turnovers were were not good for
- 5:56him early in the basketball game on Chilovich and foul trouble.
- 6:00Buchanan seems to, at least for the time being.
- 6:02Salt has foul trouble, though. He didn't get a lot of minutes
- 6:05in that game yesterday as well. So you weren't going to make it
- 6:09through the season unbeaten And the target was not to be peaking
- 6:12in the middle of January, as you mentioned, it's the middle of
- 6:14March. You're going to lose games.
- 6:16Hell, Michigan just got picked off this last weekend.
- 6:18Purdue hasn't lost since Iowa State kicked them off in
- 6:20November. The good teams are all going to
- 6:22lose at some point. Well, maybe not Arizona.
- 6:26They're going to lose. Yeah, I know they are.
- 6:27They're going to lose. Everybody's going to lose.
- 6:29There is not the gap between everybody else and them is not
- 6:32that significant. This is going to happen.
- 6:34I think it was the fashion though, and it was the same
- 6:37calling card as you open the conversation, slow starts.
- 6:40There we go again. And they kind of they cured that
- 6:43for a moment. It was 49.
- 6:45There was that loose ball on the near side baseline, that loose
- 6:48ball that Kansas made a hustle play.
- 6:51They got the ball LED to a three-point.
- 6:53Don't remember what it led to but there was a cyclone that
- 6:55jumped into there as well but the Jayhawk beat him to the
- 6:58basketball. And I think it led to a three
- 7:00made it 79 and just like that looked like they were going to
- 7:03get a steal, maybe a run out that was going to happen.
- 7:05Of course that didn't happen. And there were those moments,
- 7:08even the second-half, they cut it to 11.
- 7:10Everything was going their way. I it felt like is this going?
- 7:13To be another 1-3 minutes without scoring.
- 7:15Well, and they had a layup at the rim and it was Bateman that
- 7:18missed that reverse layup look like, oh, going to get the tip
- 7:21back. I think Tory maybe was there.
- 7:23He couldn't get the tip and then we know what happened.
- 7:26I think Badinga had a dunk right after.
- 7:27That I thought Badinga was really.
- 7:28Good. He was outstanding.
- 7:29I really thought he played an outstanding game yesterday.
- 7:33Peterson is Peterson. I mean, he's so gifted as a
- 7:36player, but this is a good team. I mean, White Council, these are
- 7:39two good players on this on this squad and no, 21 points, it's
- 7:43fog. Allen wasn't going to be easy.
- 7:45McDowell comes in, hits a couple of three pointers for him.
- 7:47When they shoot the ball, when they're knocking down, shots
- 7:49like that gonna be tough to beat.
- 7:51They're talented. There's the reason the point
- 7:53spread was 3 1/2 right, with an unbeaten team and a team that
- 7:56was one and two in conference. And as we told you yesterday,
- 7:58the projected point spread by Ken Palm was 6 how many
- 8:02buildings can get what the fuck did?
- 8:03And that thing was charged up and they were ready, you know,
- 8:06but plenty of Cyclone fans look like sounded like were there
- 8:08were made their way. There, yeah, didn't have many
- 8:10opportunities to get in full throat, but you could tell that
- 8:13there were certainly a fair number.
- 8:14Look, I think for a lot of them, I mean, obviously, right.
- 8:17If you're going to if you're going to follow your team on the
- 8:21road in the Big 12, we're going to go right.
- 8:24You this this is this is bucket list for a lot of college
- 8:27basketball fans to get to this place.
- 8:29And a lot of them over the years have, you know, checked that box
- 8:32and scratched that off and I've been able to get there and I
- 8:35think a lot of them probably did for the first time last night.
- 8:38It's a phenomenal building. I've never been into it, but I
- 8:40had nothing. But I loved when remember a
- 8:43couple of years ago, Holly Rd. took us underneath it and took
- 8:45us some some of the nooks and underneath the the bowels or
- 8:51whatever of fog. Allen just took us behind the
- 8:54scenes. We'd never seen that before.
- 8:56Pretty cool building it. Was, I've been there once and it
- 8:59was, I want to say 2007, 2008, right in that range.
- 9:02I was down for Thanksgiving visiting my dad down in Oklahoma
- 9:05on the drive back. Oh, you stopped.
- 9:07There. Well, I first stopped on
- 9:09Saturday, went to the Oklahoma State Oklahoma game and then on
- 9:12Sunday Kansas was playing Arizona.
- 9:17Found a ticket and don't mill it around like 45 bucks.
- 9:20Back in the day when there were tickets.
- 9:22Absolutely yes, for a real. Ticket you scalp now, by the
- 9:25way. I have no idea.
- 9:27I don't either. What are you doing?
- 9:28You got to scan something I guess.
- 9:30You don't see anybody on the corner of the handful of
- 9:32tickets. Well, they probably got a
- 9:33handful of papers maybe that they printed off something like
- 9:35that or do. You scalp tickets Are there such
- 9:37a? Thing Oh absolutely I see
- 9:38mechanic yeah, I see mechanic all the time they're they're
- 9:40standing around there. I don't know how the your.
- 9:43IPhone up in the air? Probably not.
- 9:45Probably just hold 2 fingers up in the air or the guys still
- 9:48have the signs. Need tickets.
- 9:49Me too. Yeah.
- 9:50And you know, they buying tickets?
- 9:52Yeah. Need tickets.
- 9:53Yeah, they got tickets. They've got tickets.
- 9:54They've been trying to steal your tickets for steal them, but
- 9:58certainly did not give you what you would be worth.
- 10:00It is a great building. Yeah, I bet it is.
- 10:01It's that's something you should.
- 10:03Do no, it's not an Ankeny. So I mean I I say it's all the
- 10:06time and I I would love to, but I just won't.
- 10:08I know myself better. Than I won't.
- 10:11At least you know yourself. Yeah, I would love to.
- 10:13I mean, what, there was 1 yesterday that I mentioned I'd
- 10:17love to get to at one point. Then I'm driving home thinking
- 10:20it's never going to happen. I'm going to leave.
- 10:22Who are you trying to kid? Let's get Jeff in here, then
- 10:24we'll move on. Get a little Iowa Purdue
- 10:28conversation going here. Jeff, how are you doing?
- 10:31Well, you know, last night, again, it's like what you guys
- 10:37have said and I've said on this show numerous times, we're in
- 10:40the middle of January. I understand that.
- 10:44Like I said yesterday, if there's a game that the Cyclone
- 10:46fan base wants to win, if you pulled it, it's Kansas to start
- 10:51the game. I didn't see 0 urgency.
- 10:56None. They get there.
- 10:57And again, it's the same things I just said yesterday.
- 11:01There was no passion. You're walking into to 1 of what
- 11:05you guys have just said, one of the college basketball and and
- 11:10it's not like this is a young team.
- 11:12This is this is a this is an upperclassman team.
- 11:15And there was and there was just nothing there.
- 11:17Now, yeah, you want to say OK, yeah, they have 14-9.
- 11:21I didn't believe it for one second.
- 11:22And here's a couple details about backing my point up that
- 11:26it's not, it's not like it's the Sky's falling.
- 11:28But number one, I, I watched Kansas dive for loose balls, I
- 11:33don't know, four or five times outright diving.
- 11:37Where, where, where, where is that to be found for Iowa State?
- 11:39Normally it is, but yes, you're right, they're.
- 11:41Standing #2 And I understand this is easier said than done.
- 11:46You don't want to drive to the thirds of the court.
- 11:49I understand that. And Kansas did a really good job
- 11:52when they went to that side. They went opposite ball and you
- 11:56got to hit 3. And that's what Kansas did.
- 11:58Easier said than done. They did a really good job.
- 12:01Number three, OK, Kansas is naked shot.
- 12:05All right? You don't want a face guard.
- 12:06OK, don't face card. Maybe it's the principle.
- 12:09I understand that. How about if I don't know, if
- 12:12Trent drives and Ken's in the corner and he's hot, we're not
- 12:16helping on the ball, we're not helping on that shooter.
- 12:19How about that again? Why are we helping off shooter
- 12:23on a straight line drive? Now, I'm not DJ and I'm not the
- 12:26coaching staff, but how, how how were they allowed to do that on
- 12:30and on and on? Now come out at 1/2 time.
- 12:33Yeah, they made a small comeback and maybe TJ said something in
- 12:37the second-half. I don't know.
- 12:38And I don't think they quit. That's not what I'm saying, but
- 12:41they they walked in there and they took an ass kicking and
- 12:45yeah, we're going to move on. And if you look at their
- 12:47schedule and I'm sure if you pull it up, they played nobody
- 12:50until February. So I don't know.
- 12:52I don't know what we're really going to, you know, we want to
- 12:54get a team and get them right. What do we know?
- 12:56We don't know nothing until they play Kansas again.
- 12:59They got Houston, Arizona, Texas Tech kind of all sandwiched end
- 13:03of February. So from now until, I don't know,
- 13:06middle of February, they're just beating whatever teams.
- 13:10But we'll see how we'll see what to do.
- 13:11The Sky's not falling, but there's small details.
- 13:14Last night when you watch the game, you're just like, that's
- 13:17interesting. We'll see what the adjustments
- 13:19are made and we'll go from there.
- 13:21You guys have a good day. Yeah, Jeff, thanks for the call.
- 13:22Look, we, we were saying for weeks that this, this if they
- 13:25get past this game last night, they're not going to lose or
- 13:28it's highly, it's highly unlikely they're going to lose a
- 13:30game now in, in the month of January.
- 13:32Now say this because we want we both saw Oklahoma State last
- 13:36week. I was impressed by Oklahoma
- 13:38State and you got to go there and they have to go there, have
- 13:40to go there in a couple of weeks. 24th I'm looking at right
- 13:44now, 24th and Oklahoma State gave Iowa State bit of a game
- 13:48Saturday. Cincinnati is no pushover.
- 13:50And Cincinnati, they pushed Houston.
- 13:52They had Houston on the ropes. They were up maybe double
- 13:54figures against them here. What was that a week, 2 weeks
- 13:57ago? It was 2 weeks ago because I was
- 13:59listening to that on the way over to the Iowa UCLA game.
- 14:01Cincinnati, they got Jizzle James back.
- 14:03He was kicked off the team. Now he's back with them.
- 14:06Kurt Carissa, who has well traveled throughout his
- 14:08collegiate career, probably remember him from Arizona.
- 14:11He was at Kentucky a year ago before he shut it down after 9
- 14:14games. He's in his sixth year, stupid,
- 14:16but he's battling a shoulder injury still.
- 14:18The Cincinnati team, they're going to grind you.
- 14:20It's going to be ugly. You can't afford to overlook
- 14:22that match up either. It's just a road game and you
- 14:25talk about desperate teams. We saw the one last night that
- 14:27Cincinnati team gonna be a desperate team.
- 14:30Wes Miller likely going to be fired if they don't make the
- 14:32tournament this year. And they got a lot of work to do
- 14:34there. They're winnable.
- 14:36They're manageable. You're favored in all these
- 14:38games. In fact, the next time that
- 14:40they're an underdog. Where would it be?
- 14:43On the road at BYU. Is it February all the way to
- 14:46there? All the way to that.
- 14:48One So Houston will come in to to Hilton as a dog.
- 14:51That's a big Monday game. 4 point spread is currently the
- 14:55number at camera and Kev Pomeroy for that one.
- 14:57So just shows you, yes, there's going to be losses there.
- 15:01Just can't let this snowball and.
- 15:03Well, then that's why I don't think that the Cincinnati game
- 15:06that they'll get back on the airplane with back-to-back
- 15:08losses, because I don't think it's going to snowball.
- 15:11I I have to, I have to believe that.
- 15:14Look, if if we saw the fact they're struggling at the
- 15:17beginning of games, this wasn't lost on the coaching staff,
- 15:20right? I mean, if you watch these Iowa
- 15:22State games, you know that they're for whatever reason,
- 15:25slow to get going. That has to be a point of
- 15:27emphasis now going forward. And then I'm sure that this will
- 15:31be a pretty spirit in the next couple of days of practice
- 15:33before they, you know, they head to Cincinnati on Friday for the
- 15:36Saturday game. What time is that game?
- 15:38Good question. 1:00 Not too shabby, no?
- 15:43Before the football starts. That's a Peacock affair.
- 15:47And what a clock for that one. Is that the same time as the
- 15:51Iowa Indiana game? No, it is.
- 15:53Darn. It well one's on the computer
- 15:56one well where is the in where is the Indiana?
- 15:59Iowa. That's on Fox.
- 16:00OK, good. Big Fox says that one.
- 16:03Both you and I and Drake also play then at 2:00, so a lot of
- 16:06basketball before we get in, but.
- 16:08They'll cover each other, Broncos.
- 16:11You're interested in that game, huh?
- 16:12I am, as a matter of fact, yes, And despite my views on the team
- 16:17that I root for, I think that they will beat the Buffalo
- 16:19Bills. I I love them as a teaser.
- 16:22Like at minimum get him up to 7 1/2.
- 16:26Buffalo's not going to blow him out.
- 16:27No, no, I don't see it. Who's he going to throw the
- 16:31football to his tight ends? Shakur.
- 16:34That's it, Yeah. And.
- 16:36Maybe Keon Coleman makes another play.
- 16:38We remember he's actually had the roster.
- 16:41Like, Denver's got the reigning defensive Player of the year
- 16:44right, Sir Tan, he's going to eliminate one of them does every
- 16:48game. Can they run the ball?
- 16:49You don't don't like RJ Harvey? Don't love him, like him as a
- 16:52pass catcher on the backfield. Better look if they had JK
- 16:55Dobbins. This team is an is has a
- 16:57legitimate look. I shouldn't say that because
- 17:00somebody's going to represent the AFC.
- 17:01They're going to let one of those teams they're.
- 17:03Going to let one of them in. It might be Denver.
- 17:07Yes, it might be. It's not a stretch.
- 17:09It's not a stretch. I I sent you the projected point
- 17:13spreads for the AFC Championship team.
- 17:16Did you do that? It was on our Mediacom.
- 17:18You know what? I never even saw it, so we
- 17:20didn't bring it up. Apparently he was just tape the
- 17:22show. I just thought this was crazy.
- 17:25Oh I see this. These are these are brand new to
- 17:27me so let run by me. All right, Texans at the
- 17:31Broncos. It would be Denver 2 1/2. 1 1/2
- 17:36Patriots at Broncos. It would be Denver 2 1/2. 1.
- 17:40Really. Bills at Texans.
- 17:42Oh, this is a tough one, 1 1/2. Pick em is it and Bills at the
- 17:50Patriots. One and a.
- 17:54Half it's 11. All four of the potential match
- 17:57ups are 1 1/2 to pick em. That's the lines that are
- 18:02currently out there in the look ahead lines for the AFC
- 18:04championship game. Throw them in a hat.
- 18:06Pulling out, you got as good of a chance of figuring out who's
- 18:09going to represent the AFC because yes, they are going to
- 18:11let one of those teams make their way to Santa Clara.
- 18:13And I kind of feel in some respects the same way, but the
- 18:16NFS, there's not a great team. No, absolutely not.
- 18:19I think Seattle is except Trent. Same Darnold the Rams are.
- 18:25Except you can throw the ball on them.
- 18:28All these teams have warts and as we've talked about really
- 18:31since, I don't know, Week 678, this is what this NFL season is
- 18:36turning into. It's a whole bunch of teams that
- 18:39have some pretty major deficiencies.
- 18:40So what are the what's the bears wart?
- 18:43Their defense. Defense stinks, yeah, but their.
- 18:46Defense usually holds teams with the exception of San Francisco.
- 18:49Yes, well, that that, But you know what is high scoring game.
- 18:51That was a hell of a. Game it was maybe the most it.
- 18:53Might have been. We got to the football season.
- 18:55It might have been. It's not a very good defense,
- 18:57but they're OK. Even that might be a stretch.
- 19:01They forced turnovers and if they don't first turnovers,
- 19:04they're bad. But you know what?
- 19:05They forced turnovers. They have.
- 19:07It's been their calling card this year.
- 19:08And Dennis Allen, he. Might they have the fewest
- 19:11warts? No, because that defense
- 19:13overall, like I think you're talking more position groups,
- 19:16Patriots offensive line, Texans offensive line.
- 19:20Broncos. I mean the the Niners injury
- 19:23report. Oh, absolutely.
- 19:24I mean, that's a #1 for them, and their defense isn't very
- 19:27good either. Sam Arnold for the Seahawks, CJ
- 19:30Stroud for the Texans. There's individuals blind, but
- 19:33it's the complete Bears defense that isn't good.
- 19:38Now Montez Wet played really well.
- 19:39The second well. He did play well.
- 19:41Jaylen Johnson, we know, can play well for the Bears
- 19:44individually. That would be the word on them.
- 19:47Wade looking Bill will join us next.
- 19:49I will Purdue conversation coming up.
- 19:50Miller and Condon underway. Before we go to break, however,

- 20:14It's the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 20:29Mallory Congon, welcome back coming up on 12:30 here on a
- 20:32Wednesday. Adam Emmenecker, 15 minutes on
- 20:36the Valley, his weekly segment. Doko Pizza 2 locations in
- 20:40central Iowa sponsor that Cappy and I were #2 as well as Vinny
- 20:44Iyer on the NFL with this point guard match up tonight has a lot
- 20:47of folks elevating Purdue versus Iowa.
- 20:49Smith V starts. Wade looking Bill former Hawkeye
- 20:52joins us to help break it down. How are you?
- 20:55Wade looking. Bill, good to talk to you.
- 20:58Really good. How are you guys?
- 20:59Doing OK, I want to see this streak come to an end, although
- 21:02the schedule makers did I with no favours is off they go to
- 21:06take on Purdue tonight. A-Team that's only lost once.
- 21:10Smith V Sturtz Is that the marquee matchup?
- 21:15I don't think there's any question.
- 21:16I think this is something, you know, even once when, when when
- 21:19Bennett Sturtz decided he was going to go to Iowa, decided he
- 21:23wasn't going to pursue the NBA, this was one that everybody had
- 21:26circled. You know, it's something where
- 21:29where Braden Smith is, he's just a typical part of typical
- 21:33college point guard. And Bennett Sturtz is in that
- 21:36conversation too. And it'll be a great matchup
- 21:39tonight to see what happens. You know one thing that is rare
- 21:42that Braden Smith struggles that we don't see him playing
- 21:45obviously at incredibly high level, but linked has give him
- 21:49given him some problems. We know starts at 6 foot 4.
- 21:51Even Kale Combs, he's sneaky tall at six four.
- 21:54He guards of the point guard. A lot of times they're going to
- 21:57anticipate that We're going to see what a lot of Combs probably
- 21:59on Braden Smith and trying to disrupt him.
- 22:02Well, and I think if you if you looked just what I was they did
- 22:06to him with is it in a Traore the the freshman, they put him
- 22:11on on Gray Smith with that length and that athleticism.
- 22:15And that's one of the few games where he struggled.
- 22:18And I think if if I was 10, he Gray Smith almost more dangerous
- 22:23to me not sport. He almost wanted to get 22
- 22:26points and four assists rather than, you know, 14 points and 14
- 22:32assists. You know, he really gets this
- 22:34team involved. And I think if Iowa can find a
- 22:36way to slow him down now, that hearing has a tough place to
- 22:41play. I know Iowa State went in there
- 22:43and just just put it on him, but that doesn't usually happen that
- 22:46way. So it's going to be a huge
- 22:48challenge tonight. Kaufman Wren seems like he's
- 22:50been there for a long time. It's rare that you see a guy
- 22:52stay one place for his entire career, and that's been his
- 22:55case. I really like him.
- 22:56When you watch Trey Kaufman Wren play, obviously 6 foot big dude,
- 23:00696869 got a lot of skills. Kauffman Wren, he's going to
- 23:06make an impact. He normally does every time I
- 23:08watch Purdue play. What do they have to do with him
- 23:10here tonight? You know, I, I think I was
- 23:14battled every game. Now going forward, he started
- 23:16with Illinois. It's just Illinois has so much
- 23:19size and that's what Iowa doesn't have.
- 23:22You know, in Purdue, they bring that Daniel Jacobson off the
- 23:25bench at 74. Trey Kaufman ran, you mentioned,
- 23:29you know, I think if they can keep those guys off the
- 23:31offensive glass or just cut in the gate or just break even, I
- 23:35think they got kind of a, a puncher's chance tonight.
- 23:39The three-point shooting historically has been incredibly
- 23:42good for Purdue. They got guys that can
- 23:44definitely fill it out from back behind the arc.
- 23:47What a good three-point shooting team.
- 23:48Yeah, you got to worry about Kaufman ran inside and Clough
- 23:51and what he can do, obviously. But how do you chase good 3
- 23:54point shooters and good 3 point shooting teams like Purdue?
- 23:57How do you get him off that 3 point line?
- 23:59You know, we haven't even talked about it, but you mentioned
- 24:01Brady Smith, TKR, the third person in that senior line up.
- 24:05There's such a lawyer. He loves his game.
- 24:08You know, he's just and he's big.
- 24:09I saw him last year. He's 6-4, maybe 6-5.
- 24:13Watch him move without the ball. You know, I, I think it's
- 24:16something Trent, where you just have to be physical with them.
- 24:20If they if they make one, maybe be, you know, something where
- 24:24you force them to drive. I think the problem with Purdue
- 24:27is that, you know, they've got a lot of guys that can really
- 24:30stretch it. And then if you have to come out
- 24:32and guard them, you've got 7 one inside, you've got Treyclothman
- 24:37610. They dump it in.
- 24:38So it's kind of pick your poison.
- 24:40Is it Fulgaris that's going to have to have a game tonight
- 24:43because of that length on Purdue?
- 24:45You know, and I don't Fulgaris and I am really a little
- 24:51perplexed at how they play. Cam Manuel.
- 24:53You know, he plays, he starts, he plays 9 minutes.
- 24:57I, I, I like his game. I just am a little I don't
- 25:01understand because that's where what I see is where they are
- 25:04struggling, you know, with with, you know, Sturtz is getting so
- 25:07much attention and they just try to survive on the boards.
- 25:11I like Cam Manuel's size and length, but I think it's got to
- 25:15be, you know, Fulgaris, Cam Manuel, Tavian Banks has got to
- 25:19have another one of his good games where he's physical and
- 25:21active. You know, it's it's going to be
- 25:24a tough one. I think it's Indiana on Saturday
- 25:27that they're thinking, hey, let's get a split with this
- 25:29Indiana road trip. Come back.
- 25:30We got Rutgers, Oregon, who lets, you know, hopefully get
- 25:34those two and let's get back kind of in the conversation
- 25:36again. So Speaking of that, those Rd.
- 25:39trips and back in the day, as we go back in the day, there was
- 25:42the kind of protected ones. I think that it kind of evolved
- 25:45as you started to play Wade going away from the old
- 25:48traditional Thursday night. And then Saturday you go up to
- 25:51Michigan, you play both Michigan and Michigan State, go to
- 25:53Indiana, do the same. Do you like with the turn around
- 25:56play here on Wednesday, coming back home then back on the road
- 25:59again for Saturday? Or would it make more sense, and
- 26:02certainly with Iowa being out of school, just to hang out there,
- 26:05to stay in Indiana for the for a couple of days and just make it
- 26:08a, a big road trip, if you will? Yeah, you know I thought they
- 26:12might stay like you said with with break, but it's such an
- 26:15easy flight nowadays trip. They'll they'll leave they left
- 26:18yesterday at 3:30 at a quick practice shoot around tonight
- 26:23kind of an early game. They'll be back at the Cedar
- 26:25Rapids airport with a time change.
- 26:27You gain an hour coming back at the airport by by 10/30 11:00.
- 26:32They'll be back to their apartments by by midnight
- 26:34tonight. So now it the whole conversation
- 26:38about like those West Coast Rd. trips, you know, was it Oregon
- 26:42came in and stayed 9 days or somebody.
- 26:44It's just it's craziness. But again, that's a whole other
- 26:47conversation and get used to it because that that's not going
- 26:49away. When you watch this Iowa team,
- 26:52is there times you think Bennett Sturtz is trying to do too much?
- 26:56Yeah, You know, we were at the UCLA game and I think we talked
- 26:59about this. I don't know if he's there or
- 27:00not, but he was the best player on that court.
- 27:03Donovan Dent, who's a, you know, a huge point guard transfer, you
- 27:08know, he was the best player at Minnesota, didn't score in the
- 27:11first half. I get 20 in the second-half.
- 27:14I don't know. I've, I've never really seen him
- 27:16in foul trouble. Now, I didn't follow him super
- 27:18close to Drake, but I would watch enough where I never saw
- 27:21him in foul trouble. Yeah, maybe a little bit.
- 27:24You know, it's just it's a different level from where that
- 27:27D2 level to Drake to the Big 10. And he's now playing guys that
- 27:33are at least at least as big as as athletic as him, if not more
- 27:37so. And that that's hard to
- 27:39overcome. It's a challenge.
- 27:42We've seen Tate Sage come off the bench and give them a spark.
- 27:45We know what he can do. Isaiah Howard, another guy off
- 27:48the bench that provides a different kind of skill set.
- 27:51Good defenders, still work to do offensively in terms of ball
- 27:54handling and shooting from the outside.
- 27:56Yet we still kind of were waiting for Brendan Hassan,
- 28:00played a little bit against Minnesota, certainly didn't look
- 28:02out. I know it's a conversation.
- 28:03Seemingly we have all the time with you.
- 28:05Wade is is there a? Is there a role?
- 28:10I think if you haven't seen it by now, the answer is no.
- 28:13And I don't know why that is why they brought him in.
- 28:17You know, it's just your benches get shorter now as the season
- 28:22goes, goes on. They don't get longer.
- 28:24You see seven years minutes have, you know, dropped to
- 28:27almost none. You know, they're, they're
- 28:29playing seven guys, maybe 8, but there's something there and, and
- 28:33I don't know what it is. I, I like him.
- 28:35I think he's, you know, a fire plug.
- 28:36I, I guess, and it's maybe on the defensive side, but again, I
- 28:40don't know. But if I, I, if he's not playing
- 28:42minutes now, you know, quality minutes.
- 28:44I don't know if it's going to happen this year.
- 28:46When you look at this Iowa team, where they're at right now, this
- 28:49last thing for me. You mentioned the Indiana game
- 28:51of the two certainly seems more winnable at this point.
- 28:55Are you where is Iowa where you thought that they would be as we
- 28:59hit the mid mark of the month of January is this week.
- 29:02I thought this team was be kind of.
- 29:03Absolutely, absolutely. I think, you know, they weren't
- 29:07going to win at Michigan State. Probably they weren't going to
- 29:09win at Iowa State. We were thinking, hey, you know,
- 29:11Minnesota at Minnesota. But you know, obviously that
- 29:15they've got some players, they got some talent.
- 29:17That was one that they may come back to regret.
- 29:19Got UCLA at home. Illinois is good.
- 29:22They got 6, maybe 7 kids that are going to get drafted That
- 29:25that that bad start against Illinois.
- 29:28The bad start against Minnesota is kind of, you know, something
- 29:31to worry about. But I think they are right where
- 29:33they are tonight. It's kind of house money
- 29:36Saturday. Let's see what happens.
- 29:38Let's see if we can get that one.
- 29:39And then you got to come back and get Rutgers in Oregon.
- 29:42Wade, talk to you next week. Thanks for jumping on giving us
- 29:45a few minutes. Appreciate it.
- 29:47Anytime guys, appreciate it. Thank you.
- 29:48Good to talk to you, Wade looking Bill.
- 29:50So we check in on Iowa. So one thing that we've talked
- 29:53about a ton is where they are in the net and they're still in
- 29:55really good shape. When you look at where they are,
- 29:58what kind of the resume looks like when it comes to the net.
- 30:02Remember that is just one of the rankings though that they use
- 30:05that is the sorting tool that is the a number one.
- 30:08But they do look at other markets, other measures of
- 30:11basketball quality. So all the predicted markets
- 30:14really like this Iowa team, Ken Pomeroy, you hear me talk a ton,
- 30:18Bart Torvik, BPI, that's another one that's used there. 22nd at
- 30:22Ken Pong, 21st in T ranked 28th in BPI.
- 30:26However, you take a look at the result based metrics, that is
- 30:30KPI. That's a term that you hear used
- 30:32on ESPN broadcast. Strength of record wins above
- 30:36bubble, not very good. Wins above bubble is actually
- 30:40sometimes a better thing to look at.
- 30:42And that's something that they're the committee uses.
- 30:45They're 45th in the country in that metric.
- 30:47They're 53rd in KPI. Going back to what we've talked
- 30:51about before, there's not a whole lot of depth in this
- 30:53resume. There's no quality wins, the
- 30:56blowing out good opponents, bad opponents.
- 30:58That's fine for your net Nets going to help with your
- 31:00efficiency, but you have to stack up victories.
- 31:04Well, that in the end game if they read be a good one.
- 31:07What did, what did Ken Palm or what did those those spots, you
- 31:11metric spots you look at, what did the the Iowa State loss do
- 31:15to their resume last night when it comes to those sites?
- 31:18They dropped a fourth. Iowa State did.
- 31:20And where were they 2? I think so if remember he
- 31:22serves. Yesterday.
- 31:23So they didn't punish him a ton? No, they should.
- 31:26Just one, one data point of many, one loss is not going to
- 31:29and these kind of metrics certainly fire down by any
- 31:31means. All right, Adam Eminecker, his

- 32:29Adam Trenton, Ken, thanks for coming on.
- 32:30Drake in Southern Illinois tonight.
- 32:33Boy, they the Bulldogs really need this one.
- 32:35Both teams 2 and 4. Drake has lost three out of the
- 32:39last four. What do they need to do to put
- 32:41this one in the win column tonight?
- 32:43Good to talk to you. Ken Trent good to great talking
- 32:46to you guys as well. You know, I do think as you
- 32:49mentioned, it's been a it's been a bit of a tough stretch and
- 32:52some of that you maybe would have expected getting into
- 32:55league play and thinking about, you know, the losses to Illinois
- 32:58State at Bradley and Belmont. Those are all pretty stinking
- 33:02good teams. They're pretty stinking good in
- 33:03the non conference. They're coming into their own in
- 33:05conference play as well. But I think for Drake is a good
- 33:08Rd. test. That's not you if you want to
- 33:10be, if you fancy yourself in the top half of the league, then
- 33:14this is a game yet at least got to come down to the end and
- 33:17compete. You know, I think the challenge
- 33:20is for a lot of Drake fans, they watch the game at Bradley where
- 33:23frankly the team just didn't play well, kind of didn't show
- 33:25up mentally the way you would expect in a league contest.
- 33:28Came back and played a lot better against Belmont.
- 33:31I think a lot of fans, I think a lot of fans would have taken a 2
- 33:34point loss at home on a last second shot to Belmont.
- 33:38The hard thing is the way it played out just kind of rips at
- 33:42your heartstrings a little bit more.
- 33:44Yeah. Couldn't you stop?
- 33:455836 lead with under 15 to play if you like, you're going to put
- 33:50it into cruise control. Belmont had different ideas as
- 33:53they come back. Off the heels of them beating
- 33:55you and I. Was absolutely quite the road
- 33:57trip out of the Bruins making their way here to the state of
- 33:59Iowa. So what do you look back at that
- 34:01Belmont game and what what went right to get that kind of lead
- 34:04against a very good team and then what went wrong in her?
- 34:07Either of those things, either something you can sustain and
- 34:10what's fixable. Sure.
- 34:12Yeah. I mean, two things that went
- 34:14right, 2 main things, right? I think number one, I thought
- 34:17Drake's defense came out with great energy against Belmont.
- 34:20Belmont is one of the most efficient offenses in the
- 34:22country. There are great 3 point shooting
- 34:24team. They really spread you out.
- 34:25Tyler Lundblade in particular is the best 3 point shooter in the
- 34:29country. He's made more than anybody
- 34:30else. And then in Division One
- 34:31basketball, right? And so I thought the energy, the
- 34:34effort and being able to force 10 turnovers in the force that
- 34:37first half was a really good thing for Drake.
- 34:39You knew Belmont was going to be able to respond and knock down
- 34:41shots and they did in the second-half.
- 34:43But I thought the defensive energy in the first half in
- 34:45particular was really good. And then I think there were
- 34:48three pretty good individual performances when Larson first
- 34:52first time in double figures this year in a Drake uniform.
- 34:55Shetler looked really comfortable with catch and
- 34:57shoots. And we've seen him hesitant a
- 34:59little bit this year, but he's starting to find his role,
- 35:01especially in the starting lineup.
- 35:03And Isaiah Carr, great minutes off the bench.
- 35:06He's been a little bit up and down.
- 35:07Those were great minutes for him.
- 35:08So I think if you're saying what's looking up, both of those
- 35:11things you feel pretty good about overall.
- 35:13I think the challenges in particular, when I look at
- 35:15halftime and I look at the 19 point lead at half, I looked at
- 35:19the stat sheet. Drake had two points in the
- 35:21paint. You have a 19 point lead and
- 35:24only two points in the paint. That is credit to Belmont's
- 35:26defense. Yes, Drake was making three, but
- 35:29that's part of what made the lead feel not sustainable.
- 35:32Drake had a hard time in the second-half getting shots around
- 35:35the rim as well. That's something this offense
- 35:37has to figure out to be able to open up some of the consistency
- 35:40for three-point shooters. And as you mentioned, it means
- 35:42they only got to the free throw line.
- 35:44They had 14 in attempts in that game.
- 35:46They were lying on the outside shooting.
- 35:48I won't go back to Shuttler because I'm not saying that that
- 35:51that game came out of nowhere. By far and away his most
- 35:54productive scoring game. Can he repeat, repeat that?
- 35:58Is this a confidence thing that apparently seemingly grew in
- 36:02advance of that Belmont game? You know, I think some of it
- 36:05comes back to opportunity, right?
- 36:07I think Eli Shettler has been, he's been who he's been all year
- 36:11in that he's about 6 foot six. You haven't played in the fourth
- 36:14position, which is kind of playing out of position for him.
- 36:17He's more of a 2-3 wing type guy because of his versatility.
- 36:21You can put the ball on the floor, but he's been playing up
- 36:24and I think doing a pretty good job of that.
- 36:26That helps with the mismatches on the offensive end.
- 36:29His ability to catch and shoot has been there the whole time.
- 36:32He hasn't necessarily been as comfortable every game figuring
- 36:35out when are the right opportunities to assert myself
- 36:38and when am I kind of catching a little bit more flat footed.
- 36:41I thought he looked like he had great focus and great pace and
- 36:45obviously started the game with with a green light.
- 36:48But you know the one thing about Eli Shettler, he has all the
- 36:51he's got all the physical tools. He has the upside to be a guy
- 36:54that can really score it. He's still trying to figure out
- 36:56his role on this group, as a lot of guys are.
- 36:59But you look at even the minutes distribution, you know who
- 37:02played the most minutes for Drake in that game against
- 37:04Belmont? So if you think about from a
- 37:08trust standpoint with your coach, with Coach Henderson, he
- 37:11always plays hard. Obviously in this game, you kind
- 37:14of put it all together from a shooting standpoint.
- 37:16But there's a lot, there's a lot of the physical tools there with
- 37:20Eli Schettler still a young player, but this is starting to,
- 37:23we're starting to see a little bit more of his potential come
- 37:25out. Tonight it's a match up against
- 37:28SIU. Used to be a traditional power
- 37:30program, has not been the case here for quite a while.
- 37:33Scott Nagy, year number two, former South Dakota State coach,
- 37:36he was a guy that helped them transition from the D2 level up
- 37:39to D1, led to the them to three NCAA tournaments, had success at
- 37:43Wright State. It's just the second year Scott
- 37:45Nagy feel like the right guy though for Southern Illinois to
- 37:48get them turned around. And how do they look this
- 37:50season? You know, SIU, not dissimilar to
- 37:53Drake, has been a little bit up and down in the sense of, I
- 37:57think the roster. When you look across SIU, this
- 38:00is the most talented roster we've seen at SIU in the last
- 38:03couple of years, but they haven't really figured out
- 38:06exactly how they want to play. So this is a group that can get
- 38:10after you defensively. I thought when SIU played
- 38:12Belmont earlier in the year, they had a great game plan.
- 38:15They forced Belmont into a ton of turnovers and just found a
- 38:18way to win at the end. You have a guard in Kelron House
- 38:22who's one of the guys that's going to be in contention for
- 38:24all league type honors. But you also look at this team
- 38:28that's been susceptible to, you know, kind of some stinkers from
- 38:32a losses standpoint. And similar to Drake lost
- 38:34against North Dakota State, right, a common opponent.
- 38:37They lost on the road to UIC. They lost at home to Illinois
- 38:41State. So when you look at this SIU
- 38:43team, it's actually it's a pretty good comparison in many
- 38:46ways, not only the record in the standings, but kind of how the
- 38:49arc of the season has went that it hasn't been a linear line.
- 38:53It's been a little bit tumultuous for Coach Naggy as
- 38:56he's figuring out how to fit his guys together.
- 38:59But this is a group. They're strong and physical on
- 39:01the interior, have two brothers, the Olig Bay brothers that are
- 39:04really physical on the inside. I mentioned Keller on house,
- 39:07there's going to be a tough match up for Drake and they're
- 39:09going to challenge Drake in different ways and a good
- 39:12opportunity to see the the Bulldogs respond.
- 39:15It's been a minute on you and I since the last time we spoke.
- 39:17They haven't won. Drake did a nice job on Smiley,
- 39:20who really went off on you and I.
- 39:23You and I kind of fallen on some hard times.
- 39:25Three straight losses. What do they have to do to get
- 39:27back in the win column, Adam? Yeah, I mean, you look at the
- 39:31last couple of games and it's just been it's been a
- 39:34combination of different things like playing against UICUIC is
- 39:37now 1, three in a row. They're getting healthy.
- 39:39They got Elijah Crawford back who really helps change their
- 39:42offense. He had 14 points, 9 assists
- 39:44against you and I. And for the Panthers, their
- 39:47defense continues to be good, right?
- 39:49They're one of the top defensive scoring teams in the country.
- 39:52But when you go 3 for 24 from the three-point line, it's hard
- 39:57to keep up, right? And so some of that is we've
- 39:59seen a. A couple shooting slumps from a
- 40:01few players on the on the you and I roster, but some of this
- 40:04is also scheduling is tough. You lose the game against
- 40:07Belmont. Belmont was just better
- 40:08offensively in that that game. You go to Bradley, Bradley
- 40:13starting to play some of their best basketball.
- 40:15That's a six point loss and then the whole game against UIC.
- 40:18So tough schedule, tough slate for you and I having to go to
- 40:22Valpo. That's a Valpo team that's
- 40:24playing pretty well. And then at Illinois State,
- 40:26this, this is next upcoming week for you and I is really tough.
- 40:30But they need a few more chip ends and more consistent chip
- 40:34ends on the offensive end from not Trey Campbell.
- 40:37Other guys are more consistently going to get into that 8 to 12
- 40:41to 14 point range. Adam Emmenecker joins us every
- 40:44week to talk Missouri Valley Conference.
- 40:45Likewise with the boys in the afternoon.
- 40:47Adam, thanks for doing this talk to you next week.
- 40:49Appreciate it. Sounds good.
- 40:51Thanks guys. Good to talk to you.

- 41:13the Plaza Shops at Prairie Trail in Ankeny.
- 41:17Injuries also pretty big part of you and I played without their
- 41:20best 2 interior. Your players last night, Tristan
- 41:23Smith who's played really well, D2 transfer from Concordia, he's
- 41:27going to be out still a couple more weeks with a hip injury.
- 41:29Also played last night without another one of their big guys.
- 41:32Definitely impactful in that one is it's a bad loss to you I see
- 41:36at home. I agree.
- 41:38Hour 2 off to Chicago. We will go.
- 41:41Cappy joins us next. Miller and Condon an hour to go
