- 0:10But let it go is it's not worth the battle.
- 0:13Your kid refuses to wear a coat when it's freezing outside.
- 0:17Hill to die on or let it.
- 0:18Go, depending on your child's age.
- 0:21But here's what you want to actually do.
- 0:23It's not a hill to die on.
- 0:24Your child tells you, I hate you because you said no Hill to die on.
- 0:28Let it go.
- 0:29Definitely heel to die on.
- 0:31Yeah.
- 0:31No, you can say I'm very angry.
- 0:34Yeah, no, you don't hate me.
- 0:36But I understand right now you're so angry that it feels like, hey, no, I really hate you.
- 0:41You hate what just happened.
- 0:43It's not about fighting.
- 0:44You are the guide, the mentor.
- 0:46You are the leader.
- 0:47You're the wise one.
- 0:49You're here to guide them through even those ugly tough moments at the end of every episode.
- 0:57We love to play a game with our guests, if you would be up for it.
- 1:00Ok.
- 1:01I don't know.
- 1:02I'm scared now.
- 1:03You got this.
- 1:06I know you've got this.
- 1:09So the name of this game is parenting Hill to die on.
- 1:14So I will give you a scenario or a trend and hill to die on is no, I'm going to hold this boundary.
- 1:22But let it go is it's not worth the battle.
- 1:26Your kid refuses to wear a coat when it's freezing outside.
- 1:30It's heel to die on or let it go.
- 1:32Such a good one.
- 1:34Definitely depending on your child's age.
- 1:38But here's what you want to actually do.
- 1:40It's not a heel to die on, but it is for you to foresee that they may actually need that coat.
- 1:48And you work with no, you have to put it on now.
- 1:53It's cold.
- 1:54It's like you can do a few things in between that friction and conflict and, you know, do or die kind of a thing.
- 2:03So teach them about the weather, go outside and you see for yourself rather than we are now.
- 2:09Oh, it's so warm and cozy in the house.
- 2:11I don't need it.
- 2:12Just step outside, sweetie.
- 2:14Stand there for two minutes and see what it feels like.
- 2:16And then you decide you want to give some autonomy.
- 2:20You create a parameter that is safe for them to fail on and then you fill in some of the blanks when you actually know the big picture.
- 2:31Good point.
- 2:33We've had a few of those conversations.
- 2:36My 10 year old wants to quit the sport.
- 2:38They begged you to sign them up for halfway through the season, hill to die on or let it go.
- 2:45It's not a hill to die on, but it is a teachable moment and a teachable lesson.
- 2:51So.
- 2:51So absolutely they don't have to do everything.
- 2:55And really they're not even good at it or they're not enjoying or something.
- 3:00You know, kind of like look at the whole thing.
- 3:02But don't just let them quit because today they're not feeling like going out there into the field and I hate it.
- 3:11I don't want to do it.
- 3:12You have to be the wise one and know and see the big picture.
- 3:17And sometimes remembering, not necessarily reminding them, but sometimes it is remembering what it is like for them when they're out there.
- 3:25Are they actually somewhat maybe good at it is one thing.
- 3:30Enjoying it when once they're already there, you can actually say that, you know what, we're not quitting mid season and don't go into lecture your teams and we made a commitment and the money, all these adult stuff.
- 3:43Keep away from them because they're irrelevant.
- 3:46But what is relevant is we're sticking with this.
- 3:49We can revisit it at the end of the season 100%.
- 3:53But here's what I want to tell you.
- 3:55I know right now in this moment, you're like, oh, I don't want to go out there into the cold or the heat, whatever it is.
- 4:01Right.
- 4:01I get it.
- 4:02We're still going to do it.
- 4:04Because I remember that once we're there, once we get over the hump of this transition, you actually are enjoying it.
- 4:12You love seeing your friends, you like, your coach, you.
- 4:15You're actually even good at it.
- 4:18And that's why we're sticking with it.
- 4:22Your teenager wants to wear something you think is completely inappropriate hill to die on or let it go.
- 4:30Up to a certain degree.
- 4:31Obviously, I would say it's almost like food.
- 4:36Those are issues that if you do not actually fully focus on, they do go away on their own.
- 4:43You fight with your child on food.
- 4:47That becomes.
- 4:48That becomes the biggest problem.
- 4:50As opposed to just the food.
- 4:52Clothes is sometimes that let them wear whatever go through fashion styles and trends and as long as it's truly, you know, weather kind of, you know, sensible and also what is out there.
- 5:10Does your school allow this?
- 5:12Right.
- 5:13You have other systems in place, by the way.
- 5:15You're not all alone there and your child has to in a way abide by the school system.
- 5:23Even when they say, well, I don't care.
- 5:27There are some consequences to that.
- 5:29So, ah, you know, I don't think this is.
- 5:32This is the best choice.
- 5:34But you feel good in it.
- 5:36You think it's okay.
- 5:38Your school allows it.
- 5:39Yeah, I'm okay.
- 5:40Because you know what?
- 5:4190% of especially fashion twins do go on and move out of the way.
- 5:48Right.
- 5:48And yeah.
- 5:49Not a heel to die on.
- 5:51Yes.
- 5:51Okay.
- 5:52Good to know.
- 5:53Your kid says, but all my friends have one about getting a smartphone hill to die on or let it go.
- 5:59It's.
- 6:00First of all, you don't want to die on that hill, but you definitely want to be wise about the things that your children tell you that are complete fabrication.
- 6:14And I want to say, Eli.
- 6:15Yes.
- 6:16So it's not that they're lying.
- 6:18They're pulling a piece of information, maximizing it to make a point and to convince you.
- 6:26They're like really good salespeople.
- 6:28Really good salespeople slash publicists.
- 6:31Exactly.
- 6:32They can take any little thing and turn it into ta da.
- 6:37And then you have to.
- 6:38Because the pressure.
- 6:39Yeah.
- 6:40Always know all my friends.
- 6:42When it starts with all my friends or sometimes even all my friends.
- 6:46Parents.
- 6:47Yeah.
- 6:47Right there.
- 6:48You know.
- 6:48Yeah.
- 6:49No.
- 6:49And by the way, if we actually called your friend's parents right now and immediately.
- 6:54No, no, it's this.
- 6:56But yeah, don't take that at face value ever.
- 7:01You don't want to die on that hill, but you can definitely stick to your grounding.
- 7:06Go.
- 7:07Yeah, we're not getting a phone.
- 7:08You.
- 7:09And I'm sorry that I don't know if all your friends have it.
- 7:13I bet some do, some don't.
- 7:16This is what we're doing.
- 7:17End of conversation.
- 7:19Okay, good.
- 7:20I'm like, that's definitely going into my arsenal of tricks.
- 7:25Your child refuses to hug grandma goodbye.
- 7:29He'll to die on or let it go.
- 7:31Definitely let it go.
- 7:34But everything has.
- 7:37Right.
- 7:38Almost nothing is just this black or white.
- 7:41White extremes.
- 7:43Right.
- 7:44So instead of telling your child what to do, ask grandma.
- 7:49Because you see there is a dynamic there, and they're both part of it.
- 7:54You're not micromanaging that dynamic.
- 7:56Say bye, do this.
- 7:58That's not nice.
- 7:59You know, and meanwhile, grandma is standing there, you know, uncomfortable.
- 8:03It's.
- 8:03And again, I don't know how much you can talk to grandma and tell grandma, but you can try gently, Grandma, if you think that your grandson, your granddaughter need to give you a hug.
- 8:15I don't know.
- 8:16No.
- 8:16But they don't want to work with that.
- 8:19I don't know what to tell you, but we all need to work our own relationships.
- 8:25And that's another One of them, yeah.
- 8:28People cannot fix that for us.
- 8:31They can give us advice, some guidance, you know, narrate what they see is going on.
- 8:36But then we still have to do the work.
- 8:38So grandma, I don't know what to tell you.
- 8:41It's, you know, mom or dad, it's yeah, but they want and they don't.
- 8:46I'm like, work it out, find a way.
- 8:49You, you have lived in this world and had many relationships.
- 8:54This is just one of them.
- 8:56You've worked.
- 8:57Some of them didn't work, others.
- 9:00That's what it is.
- 9:01Yeah.
- 9:02Your kid gets a bad grade because they didn't study and asks you to email the teacher.
- 9:06He'll to die on or let it go.
- 9:08Yes, in a way also depending on their age.
- 9:12But they have to face the teacher.
- 9:15Yeah, make them face the teacher.
- 9:17But my teacher didn't tell me and they didn't.
- 9:20You know, there's a lot of blame.
- 9:21My teacher doesn't care.
- 9:23My teacher hates me.
- 9:24Oh, I hear that all the time.
- 9:26Especially middle schoolers.
- 9:28All teachers hate all children for some reason.
- 9:31It's like, wow, must be a very tough place to be.
- 9:36But back to, you know, I don't want to do homework, you know what, or study for the test.
- 9:44And then whatever it is that I got, oh, look what I got.
- 9:47And she didn't.
- 9:48And he didn't.
- 9:49Do you, do you want to talk to your teacher about it?
- 9:52You have something to say?
- 9:53You don't think the material is right because why they complain we didn't study.
- 9:58She gave us something.
- 9:59I mean there's always all that kind of whatever stories.
- 10:05Talk to your teacher.
- 10:06I don't know, I don't know what to tell you.
- 10:08And by the way, even six year olds can talk to their teacher.
- 10:11Like six year old, seven year old comes every single day.
- 10:14I'm not doing homework.
- 10:16I hate homework.
- 10:16I hate.
- 10:17I said, you know what?
- 10:19Here is a good lesson in activism.
- 10:22By the way, you absolutely wholeheartedly believe that homework is wrong.
- 10:28Start a petition, go talk to your teacher.
- 10:31I mean this is, isn't that a teachable moment?
- 10:33As opposed to me?
- 10:34Well, he doesn't want to do homework.
- 10:36Can you give him less?
- 10:37Can you do this?
- 10:38Can you like me again?
- 10:39My, you know, managing, micromanaging, all the systems, let them talk to each other.
- 10:44And yeah.
- 10:45And by.
- 10:46Yeah, but she won't listen.
- 10:48And again, isn't that life?
- 10:50Yeah, some doors do close and I don't know what to tell you, sweetie.
- 10:56Yeah, she may not listen, but at least you went and Told her.
- 11:00And then you have to decide what it is that you want to do.
- 11:04Right.
- 11:05You figured this one out.
- 11:07You know, your kid drops an F bomb in front of you.
- 11:11Hilt a die on or let it go.
- 11:13Definitely not a hill to die on.
- 11:17And again, they start very young, and they use a lot of these words to shock you, to get a reaction.
- 11:28You can set boundaries.
- 11:29So is that a hill to die on?
- 11:31When you set boundaries, you go, whoa, yeah, no, not okay.
- 11:36You can't say that word to me.
- 11:37No, I understand that these words run through your mind.
- 11:41I understand you learn them.
- 11:43Don't go, where'd you learn that?
- 11:44And we don't talk like that.
- 11:46I mean, don't do anything like that.
- 11:48That's not teaching.
- 11:50That's just blaming.
- 11:52Pointing a finger and actually shutting down a conversation.
- 11:57So go back to whoa, hey, not okay.
- 12:01And you don't have to explain.
- 12:03You can't talk to me this way.
- 12:04This is disrespectful.
- 12:05You can't use these words.
- 12:06We don't talk.
- 12:07Don't go into a lecture.
- 12:08No is just no.
- 12:11Now you have these words in your mind.
- 12:13I don't know what you want to do with those words.
- 12:15It's up to you to either dump them or.
- 12:18Or really know when and where to use them on your own.
- 12:23In your room.
- 12:26I don't know.
- 12:28In the tunnel, when the train is right.
- 12:32There are ways to let something out of my system.
- 12:36These are good ways.
- 12:37Sometimes I do need to let something out of my system, but I also need to know when and where and how to use whatever it is information I have in my head.
- 12:46And as the parent, you want to just set those boundaries very clearly from the very beginning.
- 12:52Whoa.
- 12:53No, you.
- 12:54We do not.
- 12:56You do not say that to me.
- 12:58And then you figure out what to do with these words.
- 13:01And by the way, when they're young, they do use it to shock us, to get a reaction and to overpower us.
- 13:10So you have to understand that this is a form of, look at me.
- 13:14Look what I can do.
- 13:15Right, with that kind of power.
- 13:18So I can see that you feel like when you say these words to me or you say, that feels very good inside you, like, wow, yeah.
- 13:26No, that's not the way to do it.
- 13:29I want you to feel good inside, even powerful.
- 13:32Not this way.
- 13:33So let's think of other ways.
- 13:38Good point.
- 13:40Your child tells you, I hate you because you said no.
- 13:43Heal to die on or let it go.
- 13:45Definitely heal to die on.
- 13:47Yeah.
- 13:47No, you can say, I'm very angry.
- 13:50Yeah, no, you don't hate me, but I understand right now you're so angry that it feels like, hey, no, I really hate you.
- 13:57You hate what just happened or what is happening.
- 14:00You definitely hate the fact that I said, no, you don't get what you want.
- 14:06I get it.
- 14:06I get it.
- 14:07It's frustration, disappointment, anger all becomes, you know, hate.
- 14:14It's not.
- 14:15There are different emotions and you can express those.
- 14:19So definitely set the boundary there.
- 14:23Again, kindly, respectfully.
- 14:25But notice what I do.
- 14:26I don't just tell them, don't do that, and immediately have all the good, sensible reasons.
- 14:32I truly do give them a way to explain themselves and understand themselves and then communicate much better.
- 14:40I have a feeling this last one goes along with it.
- 14:43Your kid tells you you're the meanest.
- 14:44Mom in the world, then I feel such regret.
- 14:47Right.
- 14:48Yeah.
- 14:49Okay.
- 14:49So that's along the same lines.
- 14:51Along the same lines.
- 14:52No, I'm not, but I understand that right now if, yes, you are.
- 14:56Yeah, no, I'm not.
- 14:57I really am not.
- 14:59But right now I get you're very, very angry.
- 15:02And by the way, you can say that to me.
- 15:04I am so angry at you.
- 15:06I think you're being mean.
- 15:08That's a bit.
- 15:09I can.
- 15:09Yeah.
- 15:10So again, I'm not being mean, but you're right.
- 15:12I'm being a little tough, little serious, and definitely not giving you what you want.
- 15:18And I understand how that feels.
- 15:20So, yeah, they use the word mean.
- 15:23My friends are mean to me.
- 15:24They.
- 15:24They take a lot of times.
- 15:26Right.
- 15:27They use words in a very general way.
- 15:31And what I'm doing is not just saying yes or no or don't do this.
- 15:36I am giving them an understanding once again, of where they're coming from.
- 15:41And that's a life skill.
- 15:43Once again, when we talk about one day, I'm facing challenges.
- 15:47I'm disappointed.
- 15:49You know, I don't care what I want.
- 15:51I'm immediately.
- 15:53Or I learn to work with it.
- 15:56I learn to explain myself how it is that I'm feeling and what I can do about these feelings.
- 16:02So that's what we're doing with all of these statements that are thrown at you as a parent.
- 16:07And you're like, broken or, you know, fight back, right?
- 16:15Yeah.
- 16:15It's not about fighting.
- 16:16You are the guide, the mentor.
- 16:19You are the leader.
- 16:20You're the wise one.
- 16:22You're here to guide them through even those ugly, tough moments.
- 16:29Yes.
- 16:29And the best way to do that is by reading your book.
- 16:32You are the parent.
- 16:34Dr.
- 16:34Sige, your advice is gold for parents.
- 16:38I mean, everybody, please pick up this book.
- 16:40It's coming out September 8th.
- 16:42And I just.
- 16:43Thank you so much, Dr.
- 16:44Sige, for joining me today.
- 16:46Thank you, Aksi.
- 16:47Thank you so much for this, Sam.
