- 0:08On Thanksgiving Day in 1981, the Chicago Bears faced the Dallas Cowboys at Texas Stadium for Week 13 of the NFL season.
- 0:15The Bears entered this game with a 3-9 record under coach Neil Armstrong.
- 0:19The Cowboys were coached by Tom Landry and had a 9-3 record.
- 0:22This game featured two future Hall of Fame running backs, Walter Payton and Tony Dorsett.
- 0:28This audio recording is from the radio broadcast featuring an outers Lindsay Nelson and Jim Kelly.
- 0:58It's always our pleasure on Thanksgiving to welcome Mr. Lindsay Nelson back to the CBS Radio microphone,
- 1:04who 30 years ago today broadcast the Thanksgiving Day game between the Green Bay Packers and the Detroit Lions.
- 1:10Let's be happy Thanksgiving.
- 1:11It's very same to you, Jim Kelly. It's always a pleasure.
- 1:14Here we go as the Chicago Bears deploy the reception team. They're sending Henry Moyer back to the center deep.
- 1:20As Rafael Cepci and his team develop on the 35-yard line to kick it off before a sellout crowd.
- 1:26Here is Texas Stadium in Irving, Texas.
- 1:29Chuck Heberling is the referee.
- 1:32Here is Heberling Cepci on his starting forward.
- 1:35And the ball is in the air.
- 1:38Henry Moyer was waiting. He is at the 1-yard line.
- 1:41He's headed for field of the cloud.
- 1:43Here is right to the 10th of the 15th.
- 1:45He's put the tackle to the 20th and gets across to the 22-yard line,
- 1:48where the Chicago Bears will start first and 10th on the 22-yard return.
- 1:53This broadcast is presented by the authority of the National Football League.
- 1:56It's intended for the private use of our audience.
- 1:59Here we broadcast over the use of this broadcast about the express written contest of the Dallas Cowboys.
- 2:04Here's for him.
- 2:09In the 7th, here's the quarterback.
- 2:14He has completed 45.2% of his past six best downs in 15th and a half seconds.
- 2:19That's who the young Walter Payton are in on our formation.
- 2:22Payton's a tailback.
- 2:24Motion across.
- 2:26Kevin gets the hand up, hands it off to Payton straight ahead.
- 2:28It's across to 25.
- 2:30And on up to the 30-yard line.
- 2:32Walter Payton on the first carry.
- 2:34He's dropped by John Dutton.
- 2:36Going to be marked just short of the 30-yard line.
- 2:38Call it to 29.
- 2:40Here's Chicago Bears with a record of three wins and nine losses.
- 2:44It's been a rough, rough season for Chicago.
- 2:47Jim Kelly pointed out this is the first time on Thanksgiving
- 2:51that they've ever played anybody besides the Detroit line.
- 2:54Here's a second arm and two to go.
- 2:56Get in an eye formation.
- 2:58We can back toward the inside.
- 2:59Payton shutters steps, gets the first down here to the left.
- 3:0235, 40.
- 3:04And he goes out of bounds at the 44-yard line.
- 3:07Roughly first down in 10 yards to go at the 44-yard line.
- 3:10Dennis Sturman from the corner coming over to make the attack.
- 3:13Walter Payton, 242 carries, 841 yards on the season.
- 3:17They lined up in the eye formation.
- 3:19That play was actually designed to go off the right tackle.
- 3:22Walter Payton quickly saw there was no hole there.
- 3:24Did the stutter step as Lindsay called it.
- 3:26Ran around two tall Martin and Harvey Martin, rather,
- 3:28and two tall Jones to the left side.
- 3:30And picked up a key Chicago first down.
- 3:32Brian Bysheganer, Ricky Watts of the starting wide receivers
- 3:35here this afternoon for Neil Armstrong Chicago Bears.
- 3:38Bysheganer in motion all the way across from a left set.
- 3:41Walter Payton again, third consecutive carry.
- 3:43He hits up the middle and gets up to the 49-yard line.
- 3:46Roger Payton picks up five yards on the carry.
- 3:49It'll be second and five. Mike Heitman getting in to make the tackle
- 3:51along with Harvey Martin.
- 3:53So far the Bears game plan, Lindsay has been rather simple.
- 3:55Walter Payton gives the ball to Walter Payton
- 3:58and either get somebody or get out of the way.
- 4:01One of the two.
- 4:02One of the key matchups to watch this afternoon
- 4:04Chicago rookie offensive right tackle Keith Van Horne
- 4:06going against defensive left-hand head two tall Jones
- 4:09for the ball at Cowboy.
- 4:11Payton is starting his 90-second consecutive game here today
- 4:14with the Tigers.
- 4:16He's had only two 100-yard games this year.
- 4:18Payton goes right and he just breaks the tackle
- 4:21and struggles back to the line of scimmy.
- 4:23He was in a couple of yards deep but both the tackle
- 4:25and struggled out.
- 4:27He was hit first by D.D. Lewis, 36-year-old right outside linebacker
- 4:30along with Harvey Martin.
- 4:32So it's no game on the play.
- 4:34It'll be third and five at 49-yard line.
- 4:36No score in the game.
- 4:38Walter Payton foretolding the single season
- 4:41and had a single-game rushing record as far as the NFL is concerned.
- 4:44In one game Payton rushed for over 275 yards this year
- 4:48though he's everything about three and a half yards per carry.
- 4:51And part of the reason for that, Lindsay,
- 4:53the Chicago Bears offensive Lawrence.
- 4:55Very down and five.
- 4:57Margemore is in for one play and now
- 4:59Marshmackle is back in there.
- 5:01Evan's retreating.
- 5:03Carry down right and he's hit.
- 5:05Just as he was about to throw, it's gone incomplete.
- 5:07It's gone incomplete.
- 5:09And the ball popped away by the official says
- 5:12in completion, which will bring out the funding in it on court down.
- 5:15Evan's never had a chance.
- 5:18Cowboys had the blitz on.
- 5:20They blitzed the linebacker Randy White
- 5:22and Waters came around from his safety spot on the right side
- 5:25and put the initial pressure on.
- 5:27So the Bears will have to put the football away.
- 5:29James Jones goes back deep.
- 5:31He's standing for Dallas on his own ten yard line.
- 5:33Bob Parks is in the putt.
- 5:35Then your veteran out of Penn State average 40.1.
- 5:39His longest 54 yards for the year.
- 5:41There's the snap.
- 5:43Parsons puts it up a long high-spiling kick.
- 5:45James is going to let it go.
- 5:47It's on the two and takes the Chicago Bounce.
- 5:49It'll be killed at about the two or three yard line
- 5:51by the Marshmackle.
- 5:53He's down there in a hurry.
- 5:55And so the ball is killed by Marshmackle.
- 5:57It was a 48 yard putt.
- 5:59There is no return.
- 6:01It's going to be spotted here the four yard line.
- 6:03It's not short before first and test.
- 6:05Where the score is Chicago, nothing Dallas, nothing.
- 6:07Let's take time out.
- 6:09Eric Hipple threw two first half touchdown passes
- 6:13in Detroit's sovereign defense
- 6:15out Kansas City to only a field goal in the second half
- 6:17to give the Lions a 27 to 10 victory over the Chiefs
- 6:21in an Ashley Televised Thanksgiving Day game.
- 6:23That win lifted Detroit to within a half a game
- 6:25of first place Minnesota
- 6:27in the NFC Central Division with a 7-6 record.
- 6:30But Kansas City slipped to 8-5 from the first place tie
- 6:33with Denver in the AFC West.
- 6:35Denver meets San Diego Sunday and it's possible
- 6:38there may be a three way tie by Sunday evening
- 6:41if Denver loses at San Diego.
- 6:43Billy Sims clinched the game with about 240 left
- 6:47when he carried linebacker Cal Peterson with him
- 6:49into the end zone from four yards out
- 6:51for Detroit's final touchdown.
- 6:53It was Sims 13's score of the season.
- 6:56In college football earlier today,
- 6:59Pennsylvania lost to Richmond 18 to 12
- 7:02and at the end of the first quarter at Texas A&M,
- 7:05the Aggies lead Texas in their traditional battle
- 7:076-0.
- 7:11And now the Dallas Cowboy breaks the little
- 7:13top of the line Danny White.
- 7:15Here's the quarterback Ross Spring,
- 7:17and Tony Dorsett are in the out of formation now.
- 7:19Dorsett is deep in he gets the handoff
- 7:21of the bus to goal line and just past the line
- 7:24of Jimmy's, backed up for what you call no game.
- 7:27Like single carry along with Alan Page
- 7:29coming in to make the tackle single carry
- 7:31coming back to play before his friends and neighbors.
- 7:34He's a rookie linebacker who played last year
- 7:36at Baylor and was in the Cotton Bowl game last January 1st.
- 7:39And he said it should be a pleasure to get back
- 7:41and play in front of the home court. It should be.
- 7:45Doug Charsley comes into the ball game now
- 7:47for the Dallas Cowboys. They run him in there,
- 7:49run him out. Tony Hill comes out,
- 7:51headlocked to the left side and Drew Pearson
- 7:53comes out to the right side running back
- 7:55to the left side. And here's Ron Spring.
- 7:57And if Tony Dorsett and Mozo to a left side,
- 7:59now Spring. And if he gets the ball,
- 8:01he's hit my single carry. And that was a pleasure.
- 8:04Back on the two yard line, a loss of two,
- 8:06and they could serve at 12.
- 8:08There's that time came with a puts in linebacker
- 8:10and they met head on back at the two yard line.
- 8:12So it's a very interesting third down call now
- 8:14for Danny White. White came into the game,
- 8:16of course, with all sorts of offensive weapons.
- 8:18White 186 fast completions on 321 to plus attempts,
- 8:22brother. So he's up around 58% of his completions.
- 8:2519 cuts down 12 at reception.
- 8:27He has yet to throw a pass however in the football game.
- 8:30Three wide receivers in the ball game now
- 8:32for the Cowboys, meaning Butch Johnson is in there as well.
- 8:36Tony Dorsett goes over to a right set
- 8:41and gets the handoff and the shot comes to Danny White.
- 8:44Breaks it out to the 11 yard line.
- 8:46There were ever shots done and the handoff went to
- 8:49Danny White who gave it then to Tony Dorsett.
- 8:52Mike and Fenton came in to make the tackle.
- 8:55Now 4,000, the running unit comes on,
- 8:57not nearly enough to the first down.
- 8:59Gary Fenton takes the safety in his sixth year from Yale.
- 9:026'1", 197, crops off and he's holding on to his left shoulder.
- 9:07He's gone over to the Bears' bench now for some attention
- 9:09and if they lose him, that secondary of the Bears
- 9:12is suspect to F.B.C.I.
- 9:14Jeff Fisher is off back seven days to receive the putt.
- 9:17Running to the end zone is Danny White.
- 9:19He's averaged 40.9 as long as 50.
- 9:21He gets the snap.
- 9:23Danny White with a high-rise Marling kick.
- 9:25Richard, he's beating.
- 9:27Breaks it on the 34 to the 35.
- 9:29Goes right to the 40.
- 9:31On the 5, he goes out about at the 44 yard line.
- 9:34The Bears have a good field position.
- 9:36Steve Wright ran him out.
- 9:38He has a 57 yard putt.
- 9:41So we'll be back in just a moment.
- 9:43The odds seem stacked against the Chicago Bears
- 9:46as they play down in Texas today.
- 9:48They are coming off a dismal string of offensive productions.
- 9:51Last week, their worst ever,
- 9:54gaining a mere total 24 yards against the Detroit Lions
- 9:58in a lopsided defeat.
- 10:00Compounding the dilemma, Chicago has had little preparation time
- 10:03to challenge a team that, while far from overpowering,
- 10:06has shown signs of coming alive for the playoffs.
- 10:09But Chicago coach Neil Armstrong feels that playing Dallas
- 10:12with only a brief period of preparation
- 10:14is not the same as in his playing most clubs.
- 10:17He said, we're used to playing on Thanksgiving Day against Detroit.
- 10:20I kind of like it too, because you get those extra days after game
- 10:24at a time when your players can use it.
- 10:26The Chicago Bears have had a tough time offensively this year.
- 10:30Also, a lot of times on defense they've broken down.
- 10:33And a lot of it can be attributed to off years for a lot of players,
- 10:36perhaps some four draft choices, and also a flock of injuries,
- 10:40especially that have haunted the offense this year.
- 10:43And it showed in the statistics.
- 10:47The Chicago Bears have the ball first and then they have it
- 10:50at their own 44 yards.
- 10:51No score in the ball game.
- 10:52It's just 10 minutes, 27 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
- 10:57Waterback is then 7.
- 10:58Waterly of the University of Southern California.
- 11:00Matt Surrey and Walter Payton are the running backs in the game.
- 11:03Neil Armstrong, Chicago Bears.
- 11:05He is bringing Ricky Watts out to the left side,
- 11:08Brian Marsh, take him out to the right side, running backs in an eye.
- 11:11Evan Depp calling starting signal, waiting for the snap.
- 11:14Get to Danny, handed off to Walter Payton.
- 11:17That's been the offense so far.
- 11:18Walter Payton straight up the middle, tears off right a little bit
- 11:21and gets to the 48 yards.
- 11:22Danny picks up about four on the play.
- 11:24It'll be second out in six yards to go.
- 11:26Charlie Waters made the tackle.
- 11:27Five carries now, 31 yards so far for Walter Payton.
- 11:31You look at the Dallas Cowboys defense.
- 11:33Of course they're going to key at number 34.
- 11:35They're not that concerned about the passing of Vince Evans.
- 11:38This has not been a good year.
- 11:39It's really not Evan's fault.
- 11:40We've criticized the Bears' offensive line
- 11:42and rightfully so.
- 11:43Payton rushing statistics away down as are Evans and the passing staff.
- 11:47I call.
- 11:48He's in place of Robin Ehrle at the tie-down, running backs in an eye.
- 11:50Formation, Boshneggler and Worshensman left.
- 11:52That's back towards the inside.
- 11:53The handoff goes to Walter Payton.
- 11:55Bears left just about a half yard.
- 11:58As he stops short of the 50 yard line, it'll be spotted I think 49.
- 12:02I take my message out.
- 12:05This is kind of an interesting play call there
- 12:07because that's when Bears sent Boshneggler in motion
- 12:09back towards the line of scrimmage.
- 12:11Meanwhile, you have Payton running outside.
- 12:13So what in effect happened?
- 12:14Charlie Waters was in motion with Boshneggler
- 12:16running right back to where Walter Payton was coming.
- 12:18Third and five at the 49 yard line.
- 12:21Bears are all in their own territory.
- 12:26I'd rather Dallas has gone in than the Cullan
- 12:29dropping back is then seven.
- 12:31He's set up throws and it's almost in his head to bat it down.
- 12:34It's in his foot.
- 12:35Charlie Waters, that is his hands and couldn't hang on.
- 12:38He batted it down and then completed.
- 12:40And Evans had to get rid of that football very quickly.
- 12:43Harvey Martin and Ed Cusall-Jones, 79 and 72 respectively,
- 12:47were in there putting all sorts of pressure on Evans
- 12:49for the Bears will find it away for their second time so far this afternoon.
- 12:53Parsons on the air, averages about 40 yards every time he punt the football.
- 12:57His longest has been 46 yards.
- 13:00He's back in deep punt formation now and James Jones is standing
- 13:03at his own 10 yard line for the Dallas Cowboys.
- 13:05Parsons gets the snap, puts it up,
- 13:07and a long high-flying kick over to the left side.
- 13:09Jones will now attempt to run it back.
- 13:11He's going to take the Chicago ball.
- 13:12So if he don't run back, it is down at the 7 yard line.
- 13:15So the Cowboys will start again.
- 13:17They will start from deep in their own territory.
- 13:20As that ball was down by Al Harris, the punt was 44 yards.
- 13:24So with a score, Chicago nothing and Dallas nothing.
- 13:28Let's take time off.
- 13:30And Dallas enters this game today, a heavy two touchdown plus favorite.
- 13:34They enter the game with a nine and three record
- 13:36sharing the NSP East lead with the Federal Eagles
- 13:39who have to play the Dolphins in Miami on Monday night.
- 13:43The Bears the other way are three and nine are trying for their first win
- 13:46on the Cowboys home turf in almost two decades.
- 13:49It was 19 years ago that they last won down in Texas.
- 13:53Dallas has already posted a 16th straight winning season.
- 13:57A win over the Bears in this one would leave the Cowboys just one win away
- 14:01from nailing down at least a wildcard spot in the playoffs.
- 14:04And that would mark the 15th time in 16 years
- 14:07that Dallas would be eligible for the chase in the Super Bowl.
- 14:10Quite a record.
- 14:12Well, just one more disappointment for the Cleveland Lions to see the Reggie Rucker.
- 14:16The 11 year NFL veteran and the teammates had hoped that they would be celebrating
- 14:20this Thanksgiving and looking forward to another playoff race.
- 14:23But at 5-7, the Browns hoped for a postseason play-off at Gaunt.
- 14:26So it will make it tough for them to get up against Cincinnati on Sunday.
- 14:31Thanksgiving Day in Irving, Texas at Texas Stadium.
- 14:34The Dallas Cowboys and the Chicago Bears score a list with nine minutes exactly.
- 14:38Remaining to be played in the first quarter on the ball is spotted at the nine yard line
- 14:41first and ten for the Dallas Cowboys.
- 14:44They break their head now.
- 14:45Danny White's a quarterback brings him up.
- 14:47George says go and go right set.
- 14:49Ron Franks is in the left set.
- 14:51Now evening up is George's.
- 14:54Good back. George said get this.
- 14:56Go to the left side.
- 14:57You've got the ten yard line.
- 14:59Bill Shunty gets to the fifth season.
- 15:01Goes out of bounds.
- 15:02That's a nice being in your line.
- 15:04It was Gary Shunty and Otis Wilson who finally ran him out of on.
- 15:09There's that family lined up in a five man defensive front.
- 15:12And when they do that, should the Cowboys elect a pass,
- 15:15it puts all sorts of pressure on the defensive end.
- 15:17Because then you've got the defensive end,
- 15:19whose responsibility it is to cover the back coming out of the backfield.
- 15:22Nobody more dangerous than the game is doing that than Tony Dorsett.
- 15:26They bring in an extra tight end.
- 15:28J. Salty comes into the ball game on a second and extremely short.
- 15:31About a yard to go.
- 15:32The ball is spotted short of the nineteen yard line.
- 15:37Danny White up there.
- 15:38Dorsett's alone set back.
- 15:40They need a yard.
- 15:44And now quarterback Danny White retreating and throwing up the middle.
- 15:47And he's at the forty yard line.
- 15:52On second and short they went to the end.
- 15:55Henderson came across to make the tackle.
- 15:58Just this great fly pattern for big number eighty nine.
- 16:01The side end of the Dallas Cowboys.
- 16:02Billy Jardou-Britney at 3.
- 16:04A great drop by Danny White.
- 16:05The offensive line held their block.
- 16:07Dupree was wide open.
- 16:08And he turned it inside.
- 16:09And Henderson came over.
- 16:11Otherwise it would have been another,
- 16:13well another center fifteen yards because the corners were spread out wide.
- 16:16Dorsett came into this game needing sixty six yards to break his club rushing.
- 16:20Record of one thousand three hundred and twenty five.
- 16:22Started in nineteen thirty uh nineteen seventy eight.
- 16:27Lit back.
- 16:28And off the second by spring as he goes to the left side.
- 16:31He stopped at the thirty nine yard line after he came to the yard making his second down.
- 16:35And nine yards to go.
- 16:36Little line back to Mike Singletary and Al Harris.
- 16:39He's going to make the tackle.
- 16:42Seven minutes fifty five seconds.
- 16:44Remaining in the first quarter.
- 16:46Here comes Zed Cosby tied in in the ball game for the Dallas Cowboys.
- 16:50Billy Jardou-Britney has gone off.
- 16:52Artificial turf here at Texas Stadium.
- 16:54Beautiful Thanksgiving afternoon.
- 16:58Billy Joe by the way is playing in this eighty nine consecutive game.
- 17:02Here's a long time.
- 17:03Here's a draw play.
- 17:04Dorsett with a big opening goes straight up to little and he's stood up at forty five yard line by Singletary.
- 17:10The little linebacker was just a confrontation.
- 17:14Make them about six making thirty down and three yards to go for the Dallas Cowboys.
- 17:18Make them about make that thirty down and five yards to go for the Dallas Cowboys.
- 17:22Gipters an advantage in a short week in terms of preparation.
- 17:26It would have to be with the home team.
- 17:28Being here here familiar with the routine here at home.
- 17:30The Bears of course had a much shorter time.
- 17:33They had to travel in here to Irving and Texas to take on the Cowboys with a short week of preparation.
- 17:38That was something to bother D. Longstreet.
- 17:41Very downplay so they go on to the shotgun formation.
- 17:43Danny White.
- 17:44They did receive direct snap.
- 17:47He's got it.
- 17:48Retreat steps up and throws down the left sideline and it is getting in with a juggle.
- 17:54A completion down inside the twenty yard line.
- 17:57Back at my Tony Hill and Henderson were stride with it.
- 18:02They had a problem of hitting the air but control by Tony Hill and it's a 70 yard line.
- 18:09A 38 yard gain on the play.
- 18:10Tony Hill 31 catches 611 yards.
- 18:13Three touchdowns on the air.
- 18:15Got about a half step on Henderson.
- 18:17Bumbled the ball back in about the 25 yard line and was ripped up as he went down.
- 18:21Otherwise it was six for the Dallas Cowboys.
- 18:24He did the judging.
- 18:25Axel and Cowboys are threatening early here now in the first quarter layup.
- 18:2817 yard line on the Chicago Bears.
- 18:32He'll go to the left side.
- 18:33Move to the right side.
- 18:34Running back to White Mountain on the I-4 formation.
- 18:36Tony Hill has the ball.
- 18:40Kick the tackle.
- 18:41He's got the cut back.
- 18:42He has the 20 yard line and sacked up there.
- 18:47They fad the end around as it were and Otis Wilson came out this morning for a loss of three.
- 18:53Making it second and 13 of the 20.
- 18:55That's when the Bears were not fooled.
- 18:58That's what defensive coaches worry about.
- 19:00They try to coach to stay in your lane, stay in your territory.
- 19:03Don't over pursue.
- 19:04And that's why I'm excited because the left cornerback for the Chicago Bears was able to come up
- 19:08and keep that play as far as containment was concerned and wasn't for no gain.
- 19:13Drew Pearson sit on the left side on the second and 13 running back to the I-4 formation.
- 19:17Joy sets the tail back.
- 19:19Right with the ball to Joy.
- 19:20He feeds to the middle and gets to 15 yard line before he stops.
- 19:24He's got a fast five before he gets on the front.
- 19:26He's got a four to Chicago Bears.
- 19:28He exploded over the right side.
- 19:30Drew Peterson 65, Jimmy Cooper 61.
- 19:32Opening up the hole for Tony Dorsett.
- 19:34They move the ball down to the 15 yard line.
- 19:36Third and long and he promised he'd shot him again for Danny White and the Dallas Cowboys.
- 19:40Again they work with all sorts of offensive weapons.
- 19:43Wide receivers met in motion, constantly trying to confuse the defense.
- 19:48Dallas with the ball.
- 19:49Third and eight at the Chicago 15.
- 19:52Danny White brings him up.
- 19:54He's ready to shoot.
- 19:55We're waiting for the direct snap.
- 19:57He's got the ball.
- 20:00He's got the ball.
- 20:02He's got to be in the hole before he can get rid of it.
- 20:05Couldn't find anybody open and he stopped back there at the 23 yard line.
- 20:08Alan Page, the veteran tackle, got to it.
- 20:12The loss of eight on the play will make it 4-16.
- 20:16Coming out now is Rafael Septia.
- 20:19The field goal to private is 22-25.
- 20:22He leads the national football conference and scoring with 97 points.
- 20:27Alan Page, 15 years out of Notre Dame.
- 20:30He's been calling his number for a long time.
- 20:32He called his number at Notre Dame for a long time.
- 20:34Not standing for it.
- 20:35Charlie Waters is going to hold us 31.
- 20:38This will be a 41 yard of Depp O'Rafielle Septia.
- 20:41Charlie Waters hands out the stretch.
- 20:43Race for the snap.
- 20:44Put your down.
- 20:45Septian boots.
- 20:46It's up.
- 20:4741 yard field goal for Rafael Septia.
- 20:50And now the scramble is over.
- 20:52Now it's 3.
- 20:53He's got to go nothing.
- 20:54Let's take time out.
- 20:56Texas and Texas A&M are in the second quarter at College Station.
- 21:00And A&M is leading Texas by a score of 6-0.
- 21:03Of course, Texas already is in the cotton ball.
- 21:06And that would be an embarrassment for them to lose to Texas A&M.
- 21:09But no surprise, folks, because Texas A&M has beaten Texas the last two years.
- 21:14Senior tailback Barry Redden had a day he'll long remember.
- 21:18He rushed for 284 yards and two touchdowns earlier today to lead Richmond to an 18-12 victory over Pennsylvania.
- 21:26Redden's yardage and 51 carries were single game records for the Spiders who finished the season at 4-7.
- 21:33Richmond's other score came on Scott Shrammy's 42 yard field goal.
- 21:38The Penn Quakers got two touchdown passes from Doug Marisoni who finished the season with a dismal 1-9 record and 9 consecutive losses.
- 21:47They won their opening game of the year, I think it was against Lafayette and they hadn't won a game since.
- 21:51Well, our ball game has Dallas in front 3-0 as the Bears prepare to receive the kickoff.
- 21:56Let's get back to Irving.
- 21:58Dallas Cowboys have taken a 3-part lead on a 41-yard field goal by Septien, a 69-yard drive and 9 plays.
- 22:064 minutes, 56 seconds.
- 22:07Septien has seated up on the 35-yard line. Every more ahead is Senator Deese.
- 22:11We're waiting for the whistle.
- 22:15Off-shot Kevelling, the referee is signed here this afternoon.
- 22:18Septien raises his hand to indicate that he's ready there is the whistle. Here comes the kicker.
- 22:29Every more ahead, repeating into the end zone 3-yard field. He's running about goal line 5 and he comes from the left to the 10-15.
- 22:38And he is filled just as he crossed the 15-yard line.
- 22:42And he's spotted first in the game. Steve Wilson is on the next attack.
- 22:49It's very important for his quarters to the Chicago Bears. Let's see if they have been in the series most of the season.
- 22:54They're not at all happy with their record of 3-9.
- 22:56One thing they've been against on that still is they have been blown out.
- 22:59This is a very important game.
- 23:00He turns into the Chicago Bears.
- 23:02They want to keep it close to the early going.
- 23:04They do not have another blowout.
- 23:05Exactly. Here they come now up to the line.
- 23:08They're going to be in the 7-7 still in their 40-back.
- 23:13Mike Carb is to tie down.
- 23:15There he is. Payton is running back.
- 23:18Motion all the way across by Barksnagel.
- 23:20Here's Payton carrying, trying to sweep to the right side.
- 23:22He wants to turn the corner and goes out about.
- 23:25After he got asked about the 23-yard line, Michael Downs ran him up.
- 23:29There is the speed of a Walter Payton around that right end.
- 23:32He simply outran Charlie Waters, number 41 of the Cowboys, who came up and Waters was slapping his helmet after the play.
- 23:36He's been by himself turned to play that looked like nothing into a gain of 6 yards,
- 23:40second down at 4 for Walter Payton, whose average is way down this year.
- 23:43Seven carries 38 yards so far in this game.
- 23:45He's averaging about 3.5 yards every time he makes a rush for the football.
- 23:49Second and fourth to 23, Ken Margerum, the Stanford Rookie Receiver is in there now for the Chicago Bears.
- 23:56Heavies giving it to Walter Payton, buys up the middle again,
- 24:00and then goes left and gets it across to 25-yard line, to the 26th.
- 24:06Makes up about 3 on the play. It's going to be about a yard charge for the first down Mike Eggman,
- 24:09getting him with Randy White.
- 24:11Makes it stop for the Dallas Cowboys.
- 24:15It's a little bit surprised that the Bears haven't tested a somewhat suspect Cowboys secondary so far.
- 24:20It's only thrown the one pass, and teams who have been playing the Cowboys this year and scoring it against Dallas
- 24:25have been doing it by the air, not on the ground.
- 24:27As obviously Walter Payton left right around the end, but you would think that Evans would go up top a little bit.
- 24:32You would think so because Emerson Walls and Michael Downs were very suspect in the early going,
- 24:37and that's where teams managed to score on the Dallas Cowboys.
- 24:40Payton again, he's got the first.
- 24:42As he juggles his way up there to the 30-yard line, he will soon be coming in to make the back.
- 24:46There's going to be a first in 10 for the Chicago Bears at their own 30.
- 24:50They are trailing by three points in this game.
- 24:52That's the first first down that Chicago's picked up on third down.
- 24:55They were over two in third down conversions.
- 24:58Again, Chicago playing a little bit conservative right now, not testing that secondary of the Dallas Cowboys.
- 25:04Dallas followers have come to respect their defense a little more earlier in the year.
- 25:08They said that the defense of the Dallas Cowboys was either too young or too old.
- 25:11Now, it's Evans. He takes the handoff, sets back, goes long, up the middle line,
- 25:15puts it in, gets there, the 30-yard line, and that's the second speed underneath it.
- 25:20There was a Michael Downs in the tournament, incomplete.
- 25:25He had Michael Downs beat.
- 25:26Berman came over, kind of playing free safety.
- 25:29Evans 45% completion ratio on the years to collect down 15 interceptions.
- 25:33Through the ball, well, that's the down to throw on first down.
- 25:36That's when you've got the defense confused.
- 25:38You've got the thinking of maybe playing fast, but at least they're playing honest like this.
- 25:42Two and a half minutes. You're mainly to be played in the first quarter.
- 25:45Second down, 10 yards to go.
- 25:46Bears fall at their own 30-yard line.
- 25:48Evans, never received it to the right side, flips it running back.
- 25:51Julie and Peyton, that's Evans still the quarter back.
- 25:57Now, it's going out to the right side. It's Evans.
- 25:59He comes back to the left, doesn't matter.
- 26:01He was off the ball, scramble is on, and it's still a scramble on.
- 26:06It's it's worked out here, it's worked out there.
- 26:09And Chicago returns possession.
- 26:12The Chicago Bears return possession.
- 26:15Evans scramble, and there was a scramble all over the field around the 30-yard line.
- 26:19It is at the 32, and it was Mike Cobb who finally had the ball scabbled in his arms.
- 26:25Randy White had a shot at it, and the Cowboys down at the 35-yard line of the Chicago Bears.
- 26:30That's on the little play action.
- 26:32Evans rolled up slightly to his right, then White stripped the ball loose.
- 26:35Hakeman had a shot at it also, but the Bears get a break, they got a back.
- 26:40So it is third down and eight yards to go, as the Bears not only got it back,
- 26:43but they got two yards into the basket.
- 26:45Evans ends up there calling starting to go.
- 26:47Four should now go.
- 26:49Now it's like a whistle-stop play.
- 26:51A whistle-stop play. The pass goes on anyway, but it's incomplete to what?
- 26:55Up the middle of a flag, that's ended in a draw, and a whistle-stop play.
- 26:59Delay of game, indicated by the field judge, and so it will be a five-yard penalty
- 27:05assessed against the Chicago Bears.
- 27:07It means they didn't get it off before the 32nd spot ran out.
- 27:10That's like a third of 13.
- 27:15Drops the ball back to the 27-yard line.
- 27:18Delay, James, offense, number eight, third down.
- 27:23They always charge out against the quarterbacks, they're going to choose to get the ball snapped.
- 27:27I don't know how they're not charging against the center, he's forced to grab it.
- 27:30Better can't see the clock in the end zone.
- 27:33Still third down, 13 down.
- 27:37Evans again up there, Payton's a long setback.
- 27:41Five-receiver right of wing left.
- 27:44Evans repeats the set-up.
- 27:46Third down to the right, five-hand, and a second-hand.
- 27:49Tied against this one.
- 27:51Off to Marjore.
- 27:53Walls are covering effectively, 14-13, brings out the running in.
- 27:57Walls had the ball in his possession, it was stripped loose by the attempt receiver.
- 28:01Kevin Walls with ten interceptions on the year.
- 28:03Evans did well just to get rid of the football, the Cowboys had the puts on.
- 28:06The Davos, Zubes, they deepened left side to their job at third and long.
- 28:10James Jones goes back to receive the punt now at Bob Parsons, he's in deep punt formation.
- 28:15He is a rather intense year man out of Penn State, he played everything.
- 28:18He was a kicker, he was a quarterback at one time, he was a tight end.
- 28:22If he gets this map, puts the ball up, southern end over end of this time.
- 28:26Jones speeds up, takes the ball at 37 to the 40, 45, and he gets it up near the 48, 8-line
- 28:33before he's got my Brian Marseille.
- 28:36Excellent field position here for the Dallas Cowboys, they'll start 27-47 on a 37-yard pot.
- 28:44Well with Dannings in the national conference as the team's head into action today,
- 28:49Dallas and Chicago earlier today, Detroit B Kansas City 27-10,
- 28:54in the national conference Dallas needs this win because it wants to keep at least a share
- 28:59of the top spot at 9 and 3 in the Eastern Division.
- 29:03Philadelphia has their time off until Monday night when they play the Dolphins in Miami.
- 29:07Behind Dallas and Philadelphia in the NFC East, the New York Giants, 6 and 6,
- 29:13and the Cardinals in Washington voted 5 and 7, real scramble there for wild cards.
- 29:18In the Central Division, Minnesota the leader at 7 and 6, but Detroit now just a half a game back
- 29:24at 6, Minnesota at 7 and 5, and then at Tampa Bay at 6 and 6, Green Bay at 5 and 7,
- 29:31and the Bears in the cellar at 3 and 9.
- 29:34The Western Division at San Francisco with a comfortable lead, the biggest in the pro football world at 9 and 3,
- 29:40they are three games up in Atlanta at 6 and 6.
- 29:44They can by 20 to 25 the right side and gets nothing as he is on out of outside down Hampton.
- 29:56Blake is saying I'm going to wait some time for good many years,
- 30:00but he's here, they've come back and they're playing this afternoon.
- 30:03It's going to be third down, 5 yards to go with the ball at 48 yard line.
- 30:11They're looking to have a little bit of a commitment.
- 30:16Chicago Bears, the team with a record of 3 and 9.
- 30:19Next week they play the Baltimore Colts, Baltimore won their first game of the year,
- 30:22then they lose 11 consecutive games, and after that the Eagles come here to Texas City
- 30:26for the game that will decide the winner of the NFC.
- 30:29Now at the press level before the ball is entered, people were talking about the battle between
- 30:33the Philadelphia Eagles and the Dallas Cowboys.
- 30:35They're looking for a threat.
- 30:36Out of the shotgun, not any way. Looks down, feeling through, just a little added in the screen.
- 30:41That's a 33-eyed line.
- 30:44But the ball was dropped and it's called incomplete now in the Philadelphia put-scottsmen for a moment.
- 30:50He was hit, shaken loose in the official play, and it's complete.
- 30:54Todd Fowler is the defender who made the hit,
- 30:56while it starts back up to referee Chuck Nevilley calling it an incomplete.
- 31:00No catch, the fans here in every Texas amount of agreement. That's the way it is, and it makes a point out.
- 31:07The fans can't really complain because that's the new rule change from this year where you have to come down
- 31:12in possession of the football with both feet in bounds, and it all goes back.
- 31:15It began a year ago, the game you and I did in Atlanta at Folkland County Stadium,
- 31:19when Wood Johnson caught the touchdown pass, the Atlanta people didn't think it was a good grab,
- 31:23but on the replay it showed he did not have possession for what the NFL people thought was an appropriate amount of time,
- 31:29so they made the rule change, but this is an completion.
- 31:32You're exactly right. Fisher is deep now, and Charlie Watt is off and down to the end zone,
- 31:40and so it's going to be 12 out of the 20 yard line put in play first and 10 out of the 20 yard line.
- 31:4548 yards putt with no return for the catch back, and so the downer's careful,
- 31:50it's getting nothing out of that possession, besides the fact that they had excellent field position,
- 31:53and the Chicago Bears will start at the 20 yard line.
- 31:57We have 30 seconds remaining to be played in the first quarter of this game,
- 32:00and the Dallas Cowboys are leading by a score of 3-0, and if you're the Chicago Bears who escaped the first quarter here in Texas,
- 32:07stadium 3-0, and you come in with a record of 3-9 against the division leader,
- 32:11with a record of 9-3, that's a good 15 minutes of football.
- 32:14You've got to be very pleased with that. Now Chicago, up to the line, 10-7's a quarter back.
- 32:18Running back to the line, formation three,
- 32:21is called back here to the quick pitch to Walter Payton's left side, and he gets up to 25, 30, 35, 40, 45,
- 32:2850, cuts back 45, and Walter Payton's finally back down to the 41 yard line of Dallas.
- 32:34Now, running, and Michael's out, finally stopped,
- 32:37Walter Payton secures the fans here in Texas a little fancy stepping,
- 32:41Payton's out for 39 yards in the first down.
- 32:44And what a move he put on Michael down back at the line of the pivot.
- 32:48He's carrying that loaf of bread football out there in one arm.
- 32:51Give a little dupe to the inside, cut it outside.
- 32:54Left Michael down standing there all alone, and he was off to the race.
- 32:57Time has run out in the period, and that's the end of the first quarter.
- 33:00With the score, Dallas 3, Chicago nothing.
- 33:04Well, as the Dallas Cowboy coach, Tom Landry, said before this confrontation with the 3-9 Bears,
- 33:10you've got to watch Walter Payton.
- 33:12He is the heart and soul of their offense, and he proved it on that run.
- 33:15A great move by Payton, who dashed in and then cut to the outside,
- 33:19was by two Dallas defenders before they knew what happened,
- 33:22and sprinted down the sideline for a 40 yard pickup, and that's got a boost to bear.
- 33:27Payton not having one of his better years, but he is approaching 900 yards on the season,
- 33:32and that'll put him very close to it.
- 33:34Payton would like to get a thousand yards, and he seems to be sure about to do that,
- 33:38because he has been playing hard, and he is even coached for Landry and his own coach.
- 33:42Neil Armstrong says, nobody in the National Football League is trying harder,
- 33:46and tries harder each and every week than Walter Payton.
- 33:50And Walter, even though he's having an off year for him, is still the fourth all-time leading rusher in the NFL.
- 33:57He stands only behind the great Jimmy Brown, O.J. Simpson, and Frank O'Harris,
- 34:02and his health remaining what should be for at least another three or four or five years in the NFL,
- 34:07and if they get a little more power and punch in that offensive wall for Chicago,
- 34:12Walter Payton could finish among the top three, or maybe even if he stays healthy and plays a longer time,
- 34:18Walter Payton could become the number one rusher in NFL history.
- 34:23Going into this season, Walter Payton had a little over 8,500 yards,
- 34:30and is now approaching 9,400 yards, so he's doing very well.
- 34:36In the first quarter, Walter Payton carries a ball ten times for 84 yards,
- 34:42so he's off for another fine afternoon, and that doubles and triples,
- 34:46and almost quadruples the entire Bears offense in their loft to Detroit from a week ago,
- 34:50and they have left only 24 yards.
- 34:52Tony Dorsey sets six carries for 26 yards.
- 34:54Interestingly though, the Bears had no yards passing, no turnover for either team,
- 34:59but as the comboers have concerned, 58 yards passing, and that led to that 41-yard field goal by Raphael Septienz,
- 35:05who has just set a new single season record for field goals,
- 35:08so the Dallas Cowboys with 23, and he tied the Cowboys all-time career field goal record,
- 35:13set by Mike Clark with 69.
- 35:16You remember Mike Clark? Two, two.
- 35:20And now we're ready to go with the second quarter.
- 35:22Lindsay Nelson and Jim Kelly here at Texas Stadium, the Chicago Bears held them all first since then,
- 35:27and the Dallas 41 yards.
- 35:28Here they come, out of the husband and wife of the Allianz M7,
- 35:30to the quarterback running back to the Mayer formation.
- 35:33Matt Sui ahead of Walter Payton.
- 35:36Kevin, still calling, starting, waiting for the snap.
- 35:39Quick pitch to Walter Payton, ties the left side.
- 35:42Takes the Winkle outside and goes out about at the 39-yard line, Michael Down.
- 35:46The rookie free safe, he ran him out about after again,
- 35:48and two in the second now and eight yards to go.
- 35:51And you get the feeling Michael Down's the rookie who's going to know Walter Payton is moved very well before this afternoon is over.
- 35:56Matt Sui came up and threw quite a block on number 32 Dennis Thurman at the 40-yard line
- 36:01and then left to go with our Payton to turn the corner and pick up a short two yards.
- 36:04Marjoram and Watts coming to the ball game now.
- 36:06Wydre Severs for the Chicago Bears, tight end Robin Eirle comes off the field,
- 36:10they have two tight ends in there and Vashnikov comes out, Mike Top stays in.
- 36:14Good running back, Wydre Severs left and right, Evan's up there waiting for the snap for the Chicago Bears.
- 36:19Walter Payton's in the left set.
- 36:22Now Evan, spent back, throws up to middle and it's Sui in, he can't get Sui in, it's a 10-yard mark.
- 36:28Now, burning the middle adbacker, it picks up Sui in, he was trying to stretch his body out and give his fingertips on the ball,
- 36:33that's a 10 and he couldn't do it.
- 36:36Sometimes if there's a criticism of number eight, Ben Severs, who by the way got his first start two years ago against these same Dallas Cowboys,
- 36:43it is his inability to look off to the receiver for whom he is in the past originally.
- 36:47Ricky Watts was freaking out a post pattern across the middle, he was wide open.
- 36:51And that time Evan was looking at Sui out of the backfield as they isolated the back on the linebacker one on one.
- 36:56The Bears come up third down, eight to go, they are one out of four in third down conversion.
- 37:00Thomas out of the ball game, Bruce Williams in there at the side end now,
- 37:03bringing back Evan to set up, throws to the right side, Evan's gathered in for a complete, he's thinking about Williams.
- 37:09Bruce Williams goes out about at the 25-yard line, that will be a first down and 10-yards to go for Chicago, and the Dallas 25.
- 37:16Bruce Williams number 83, a big good looking side end for the Chicago Bears, 18 catches, 126 yards in 12 football games, only averaging about seven yards,
- 37:26two cut downs however for the Chicago Bears, number 83-6 for 226 in his fourth year of former Tar Heel from North Carolina.
- 37:33As they spotted the inbound marker at his first and 10-yards to 23-yards line,
- 37:38running back to the line formation, that's still Matt Surrey in there, still Walter Faceness with tailback,
- 37:42sent seven to quarterbacks, and it's Matt Surrey, five to go over left guard, and he gets inside the 20-yard line to the 19,
- 37:49before he's pulled down after again a four-yard, then he's taken down at six yards to go for Chicago, trailing by three points.
- 37:56Michael Downs made the tackle.
- 37:58What about this? If the Chicago Bears take a seventh free lead over the Cowboys here in Dallas, that might change their outlook on their Thanksgiving game considerably.
- 38:06It would change their outlook a lot of Texas football fans, because that most of them would have the big Thanksgiving dinner before they came out here this afternoon,
- 38:14but they have three or four. What do you write? Here's Walter Faceness on a short lay and he gets over to the 20-yard line.
- 38:21Lost the yard, it would be third down at seven, and it was Mike Henckman, the left outside linebacker who missed him,
- 38:26he's seen him with a broken arm, but he's back in good form here and made the tackle for the Dallas Cowboys.
- 38:31In Texas, they do things big. They have Thanksgiving breakfast, Thanksgiving lunch, Thanksgiving lunch, and Thanksgiving dinner.
- 38:37I noticed that at the hotel coming out. I personally had Thanksgiving Mexican food myself.
- 38:42Clam some more later on. Three down seven yards to go after 20-yard line. Now, Stridt-Winningdek, facing to the left side, Matt Cooley in the right side.
- 38:52Evan Brown being chased down the weekend away. He's dropped back at the 27-yard line. He was really lost the moment he got the football there.
- 39:02Charlie Waters, Van Dickerson, Anthony Dickerson. All right, it's 4-th down coming up now on 14.
- 39:10That's an indication of just how Tom Landry feels his defense has come on in the 12th game.
- 39:15Lindsay said they were either too young or too old as the season began, but they have meshed together as a unit. That time he allowed single coverage,
- 39:22one-on-one on all the Bears receivers. They blitzed Charlie Waters, they blitzed the linebackers, and it resulted in a quarterback strike.
- 39:28Roberto was 44-yarded with Amalini holding, and there is the kick. It's in the air. The 44-yarded for Roberto is good, and the score is tied.
- 39:36And with the score is tied. Here's Tygo Bears, 3-down in Cowboys 3. Let's take time out.
- 39:42A moment ago, we mentioned that Walter Payton is 4th behind Jimmy Brown, O.J. Simpson, and Frank O'Harris in all-time NFL rushing,
- 39:50and that is correct. The yardage we gave you was a little off. We said 9,400.
- 39:54Walter entered this game with a little over 9,200 yards, and he should probably pass 9,300 as the afternoon wears on.
- 40:03He's having a good day. He's got about 45 yards rushing thus far.
- 40:07In the National Football League American Conference standings, the big game for Miami after that tough loss to the New York Jets last Sunday
- 40:16will be this Monday night against Philadelphia down in the Orange Bowl. Miami at 7-4-1 find the Jets at 7-4-1.
- 40:24Of course, the Jets probably at home will be favored over a very weak Baltimore co-team that has won only one of 12 starts this year.
- 40:34Buffalo in the east behind Miami in the Jets' Dillon Contention with a record of 7-5.
- 40:41The Chicago Bears have come back to the side of the store with 53 yards drive.
- 40:47Eight players, 2 minutes 25 seconds of 44 yards field go by Roberto, who has seized them all up on the 35.
- 40:53Now James Jones has stopped back 70 boyfellows on one side, Tim and Newsom on the other.
- 40:57They received the kickoff for the Dallas Cowboys.
- 41:00Run, Johnny Brightley through the apertures, overhead here in this magnificent football stadium that is sold out again this afternoon.
- 41:0865,000 plus change. We have 13 minutes 5 seconds remaining to be played in the 46. Here is the Vettel. He puts it up.
- 41:15James Jones goes over in front of fellows and Jones takes it with a 2-yard line. He backs the 5, cuts towards the middle of the field going across.
- 41:21This is James Jones, 15-20 and he gets to do the 24-yard line run back by James Jones and he is stopped by Moorehead.
- 41:3123 yards, he stands on the first in 10 now.
- 41:34More of the Dallas Cowboys who find them so tied with the Chicago Bears.
- 41:40I imagine there are a few Cowboys over the bench that are surprised at the intensity with which the Bears have played the first part of this football game.
- 41:47The feeling was this could be a shootout and very early.
- 41:51Exactly. First in 10 after 24-yard line.
- 41:54Danny White brings them up.
- 41:56Ron Springs, Johnny Dorsett now shifting into an high formation.
- 42:00Usual movement by the Dallas Cowboys.
- 42:03Now the forward pass and it's just complete.
- 42:07Dennis is Tony Harold and he was hit, rather intended for Drew Pearson. He was hit in sandwich by Doug Frank.
- 42:14Just got to the time when he was making his move and he's still on all four.
- 42:18Drew Pearson is down near the 41-yard line.
- 42:21The pass was incomplete of course.
- 42:23What a hit by number 46 Doug Frank who was actually playing free safety.
- 42:27The man who was covering him, Terry Schmidt, the 8-year man out of ball state was with him, strived for stride.
- 42:32The ball was perfectly thrown by Danny White but Frank came up and separated Pearson from the football and for a moment Pearson from his senses.
- 42:39He's still down on the 42-yard line.
- 42:41Doug Frank perhaps one of the hardest hitters of the National Football League and seventh year from Ohio State.
- 42:47The hand is for Drew Pearson as he gets up now and is walking under his own power off towards the Cowboy bench on the far side of the field.
- 42:54With the assistance now of some members of the training staff,
- 42:57it is in his heart, butch Johnson as he plays him down at the wide receiver for the Dallas Cowboys.
- 43:03He'll have a second and seventh to 24-yard line.
- 43:08Drew Pearson, nine years in the NFL out of Tulsa, one of the premier wide receivers in the league, also has a television show here in Dallas.
- 43:15He might take the night off after that hit by Doug Frank however.
- 43:18I should say, Doug Counties decided on the ball game just now. Here goes push-down, not go wide left.
- 43:24Danny White up here now as they shift the running back to split formation.
- 43:29White waits for the snap, goes to a high count and even higher counts. Still no snap now.
- 43:38And up is in close to Ron Springs and he is tacked up quickly after the defense team's tackle man has lived by little linebacker Mike Singletary and tackle Jim Osberg.
- 43:47He's got the 25-yard line, gave a yard off the field, make a serve down in nine yards to go.
- 43:52You can kind of see the Bears' defense gaining momentum as this game gets underway.
- 43:59Early on, Danny White has taken pretty much his own way. The running of Tony Dorsett, White was three for three, 66 yards,
- 44:05throws the Cowboys down into field goal range. White has missed his last two passes,
- 44:09the Bears' defense playing now with more intensity, more as a team.
- 44:13This is a big play. Third down at nine yards to go. Drew Pearson comes out to the wide left,
- 44:17he's double to the left side, they shift into the shotgun Danny White, talks back about seven yards,
- 44:22waiting for a direct snap, right in and motion across, here's the snap.
- 44:26Taking by Danny White, throws to the right side and in complete.
- 44:29That's a 35-yard line, in and out of the hands of Jay Salty. That's a 35.
- 44:35Very fancy covering, penalty marker, back. Holding is indicated, I guess for Dallas Cowboys.
- 44:42If the Bears require to bring up the running down, the alarm's gone, waving his arms over on the Bears' sideline,
- 44:48he'd rather have the football back with about 12 minutes left to go.
- 44:52I do not blame him at all.
- 44:54Roberto 3-70 entry, closing offense number 64, refuse, fourth down.
- 45:02All rafferty worth the cup, it refuse means they go into front formation now,
- 45:06and it is Danny White back to the kitchen, kicking, and Jeff Fisher standing back on his own 34, the Chicago Bears.
- 45:16Danny White waits for the direct snap, gets it, puts the kick up, doesn't care deeply,
- 45:22fair catch, and it is made at the 43-yard line, and Maashega Loom,
- 45:27made the fair catch so the Chicago Bears start first again, it's spotted at the 44-yard line,
- 45:32and we'll be back in just a moment.
- 45:36We're seeing our look at the standings in the American Conference, as we said, in the East, it's Miami and the Jets at 7, 4, and 1.
- 45:43Buffalo at 7 and 5, and of course New England and Baltimore out of it,
- 45:47New England at 2 and 10 and Baltimore at 1 and 11.
- 45:50In the Central Division, Cincinnati having a big year behind quarterback Ken Anderson,
- 45:56who's really come on strong, 9 and 3, their record, Pittsburgh just hanging on at 7 and 5,
- 46:03and Cleveland and Houston at 5 and 7, though mathematically alive, their chances are very, very slim, they're hanging out by their fingernails.
- 46:10In the Western Division, Denver is now all alone in first place because Kansas City lost its Thanksgiving Day game earlier today
- 46:17at Detroit 27-10, the Lions, so at the moment, Kansas City slips into second place at 8 and 5,
- 46:24and San Diego can make it a triple-way tie for the top spot in the west if it can beat Denver on Sunday afternoon.
- 46:30Oakland is behind at 5 and 7, still alive mathematically, Seattle out of it at 4 and 8.
- 46:37This is Lindsay Nelson with Jim Kelly here in Texas for the Thanksgiving afternoon game between
- 46:44the Dallas Cowboys and the Chicago Bears.
- 46:47It's a 3-3 tie, Chicago has them all first since Denver at the 44, and Jim has pointed out,
- 46:52it was expected in many quarters that this game might be over really quickly because the Chicago Bears
- 46:57are coming off their worst performance against Detroit when they had a total offense of only 24 yards,
- 47:01and the third was the Dallas Cowboys who were 9 and 3, and coming up from a big win over Washington,
- 47:06might blow them out, that has not happened.
- 47:08Robin Earl, Mike Sop, Devil's High down the line running back to the 9-4,
- 47:11makes it for Benton and is up there for the Chicago Bears.
- 47:14Here's a quick pitch to longer pace, tries the right shot, wrangles the patacles, sends his way up across the 50,
- 47:19and is stopped right there across the 50 yard line by Bob Brennan and Charlie Waters.
- 47:24Walter Peyton rapidly approaching 100 yards in the first half, he has been just about the entire Chicago Bears offense,
- 47:32having just gone into the air, apparently, and that's still a big surprise,
- 47:36why they're not testing the somewhat suspect secondary of the Dallas Cowboys,
- 47:40a unit that has played up and down football games by virtue of the Dallas Cowboy record of 9 and 3.
- 47:47Mike Sop, Mike Sop, Mike Sop comes out to the right side in the second and fourth 50 yard line,
- 47:53and plays the setback, here is Thuay, trying to pick up the first shot,
- 47:57he got a couple yards over the stack of the 48 yard line by Harvey Martin,
- 48:01ran into the McFerlough after he's picked up two,
- 48:04ready again to make the tackle as well,
- 48:08third down and two yards to go for the Chicago Bears,
- 48:14double tight end Mike Sop comes in down, Brennan's going to play,
- 48:17and Marsh Nagle comes out of the ball again, it's Robin Earl and Mike Sop,
- 48:20double tight end of the line around the third and short,
- 48:2210 minutes 43 seconds remaining to be played in the first half,
- 48:25Thuay had a Peyton in the air formation, here's Peyton,
- 48:28drives the right side, and he's got the first to set,
- 48:31which is here, sounds out to the 43 yard line, before Michael Down comes in to make the stop.
- 48:36There's the great speed, the great acceleration of number 34,
- 48:40Walter Peyton actually, the doomsday defense, the salad had him stop back at about the 50 yard line,
- 48:44he just flithered through there, there wasn't a block, he did it all on his own,
- 48:47and picked up another Chicago Bears first down, all the way at the 43 yard line of Chicago,
- 48:52Walter Peyton's down, just about one yard shy of 100 yards in his first pass.
- 48:57Vicky Watts comes out of the ball again,
- 49:00Den Hargerham comes in,
- 49:03Erlen Cobb, still a double tight end of the line,
- 49:05with the running back to the slip, Peyton to the left side,
- 49:08looks for an opening, it closes before he can speed through at the 40 yard line,
- 49:12he picked up three on the play,
- 49:14second down at seven yards, he's up operating the middle line back there, got there for the stop.
- 49:19He's got quite a tribute to the Chicago Bears,
- 49:21to their head coach Neil Armstrong and the assistant,
- 49:24the intensity with which the Bears have played coming in,
- 49:26Cobb always got on the board first,
- 49:28three nothing and since that time, Lindsay, the Dallas has done nothing offensively.
- 49:32Absolutely, it's been a barred up ball game,
- 49:35so far for the Chicago Bears, who came in here with the record three wins and nine losses,
- 49:39second down seven yards to go, running back to the slip,
- 49:43dropping back at that seven,
- 49:45sets it up in the low pass, he's down to the right side,
- 49:47goes back to the left side, he's coming,
- 49:49he throws it in there, the diving catch made by Peyton,
- 49:52with no contact, he gets up and advances them all to the 42 yard line.
- 49:57It will be a loss of two on the play,
- 50:00with a triple all around and Peyton took the lead.
- 50:04He was down with no contact,
- 50:07got up to the scramble and in to the goal,
- 50:09Jones was the man who almost got the evidence,
- 50:11was sending him off the step.
- 50:12The crowd is booing, but it was simply a great play,
- 50:15a great play by the quarterback of the Chicago Bears,
- 50:17number eight, Ben 7th, Ed Seathall Jones,
- 50:19Harvey Martin with all kinds of pressure on the youngster,
- 50:22and he scrambled out and as he was going down
- 50:24before his knees hit the ground,
- 50:26rolling to his left, rolling to his right with one arm,
- 50:29somehow got the ball to the water base to avoid a huge loss.
- 50:32Third down and nine yards to go,
- 50:34Chicago has the 42 yard on the Dallas Cowboys,
- 50:36Ben 7th has it all,
- 50:38that's back to set up and puts it up to the right side,
- 50:40and it's just going to play.
- 50:42And sending for foot, will ya?
- 50:45I go down, covering defensively,
- 50:47and the running in has come down.
- 50:49That time Charlie Waters was whistling again.
- 50:52You wonder if Dallas had learned something
- 50:54looking at the films after that loss to Detroit.
- 50:56They had a young Eric Kippel, a lion's quarterback,
- 50:58they didn't blitz, they gave them lots of time to throw results,
- 51:01Detroit 27, Dallas 24, last week no contest,
- 51:05Washington lost to the Dallas Cowboys on the rebound,
- 51:07but this afternoon Dallas is whistling Ben 7th,
- 51:10and making his rushes through, making his timing off.
- 51:13Harvey's gets the snap, puts the kick up,
- 51:15James Jones is going to let it go,
- 51:17and it goes out of bounds, there's no run back,
- 51:19it'll be lined up by the officials along the sidelines,
- 51:21and it's going to be at the 23 yard line.
- 51:25So with a score tied, Chicago 3-Dallas 3,
- 51:28let's take time out.
- 51:30Well in that game earlier today,
- 51:32between the Detroit Lions and the Kansas City Chiefs,
- 51:35won by Detroit 27-10,
- 51:37incidentally Detroit is now 6-0 at home this year,
- 51:40they're perfect as a Silver Dome.
- 51:42Detroit wound up with the statistical legend of all game,
- 51:45Detroit at 21 first down to Kansas City 14,
- 51:49171 yards rushing to Kansas City's 116,
- 51:52the only edge for Kansas City was in passing,
- 51:55129-114, and the facts were the big story.
- 51:59Detroit had five facts for 40 yards,
- 52:02and Kansas City had three for but 18 yards.
- 52:05And in the passing department,
- 52:07well Eric Cipoll was rather conservative today,
- 52:09didn't really put the ball up in the air too much,
- 52:11was 10 for 22 for 132 yards,
- 52:15and a combination of Fuller and Kenny
- 52:19for Kansas City 14 of 25.
- 52:22The fumbles, there were three by Detroit,
- 52:24they lost one, and Kansas City lost its only fumble.
- 52:27Time of possession was pretty even,
- 52:2930 minutes for Kansas City, 29 and a half from the line.
- 52:33This time the Dallas Cowboys start from their own 23 yard line,
- 52:37three shots 10 yards to go,
- 52:38Camden Chicago Bears defense continue to contain these Dallas Cowboys
- 52:42with 8 minutes 15 seconds remaining in the first half.
- 52:45And it goes to Frey and Jay Salt,
- 52:47they double-tie down the line,
- 52:50and he wipes it forward to back,
- 52:52bending and waiting for the snap,
- 52:53they put him on double receiver to the left side.
- 52:56Now on the draw place,
- 52:58it is taken out to the 24 yard line,
- 53:00Ron Springs carrying it,
- 53:02so there's a gain of only a yard on the play,
- 53:04it'll be second down,
- 53:05and I'm going to go my single carry,
- 53:07came in to make the tackle.
- 53:11Yeah, Smiths rather quiet offensively for the Cowboys,
- 53:14but they really haven't seen the complex
- 53:16of Chicago Bears defense all season long.
- 53:18Neil Armstrong, 8 years defensive coordinator
- 53:20for the Minnesota Viking,
- 53:21a very elaborate defensive plan,
- 53:23not as elaborate as the Cowboys,
- 53:25but certainly something the Dallas offense has not
- 53:27saved all season.
- 53:29Good back, Springs in the right set,
- 53:31George said in the left set,
- 53:32now it's Springs and Moshe outside right,
- 53:34dropping back,
- 53:35is Danny Whitey's camera to the right side,
- 53:37looks down, feels good,
- 53:38back to Crossfield,
- 53:39and it is incomplete.
- 53:41Doug Cardvies,
- 53:43the man for which it's intended,
- 53:45but I do not know of great many coaches
- 53:47who like to see that ball thrown back to the left
- 53:49and back to the right side.
- 53:51Dan Hampton was the man putting the pressure on.
- 53:53Crossfield was as they say in the vicinity,
- 53:55but he too was running left to right,
- 53:57and he was against the grain,
- 53:58tried to reverse his vehicle,
- 53:59but the best ball hung up there,
- 54:01and had anybody been available playing center field
- 54:03for the Bears, that would have been an interception.
- 54:05It'll be now 30 down and 9 yards to go,
- 54:08the Bears have all of their own 24 yard line.
- 54:11Cowboys have only two first down,
- 54:13let's see it's a 1 out of 5,
- 54:15a third down conversion.
- 54:17Off here once again,
- 54:19into the shotgun,
- 54:21Danny White,
- 54:23got back to take the direct snap,
- 54:25there's Ron Springs in motion outside left,
- 54:27here's the snap taken by White,
- 54:29he's got back and forth to first right,
- 54:31now he's back to his fair, the football
- 54:33almost loses his balance,
- 54:35he gets it in 5-3,
- 54:37and the ball gets through,
- 54:39Samuels,
- 54:40the Tigers got the ball,
- 54:42and White is through,
- 54:44the Dallas Cowboy,
- 54:46and Porterback is through,
- 54:48and he's holding his rim,
- 54:50and he's got the 40 yard line.
- 54:52Remember to the training staff
- 54:54for the Dallas Cowboy,
- 54:56coming out to see him out to Porterback,
- 54:58who is injured on the sample,
- 55:00Chicago with the ball first,
- 55:02and Jim has the Dallas 40 yard line.
- 55:04And the way Danny White is lying down
- 55:06on the 33 yard line,
- 55:08he's not going to be getting up for White's some time.
- 55:10He was chased out of the pocket,
- 55:12the Bears that time came with a safety blitz
- 55:14for the left drive,
- 55:16White scrambled out, had an ocean to run,
- 55:18and he was behind,
- 55:20stumbled at about the 35 yard line,
- 55:22was kind of slithered and then sandwiched
- 55:24by three Chicago Bears,
- 55:26the ball came loose immediately,
- 55:28down with Danny White,
- 55:30he didn't move, and then the huge scramble,
- 55:32and the Bears take advantage of the turnover,
- 55:34start just outside the Dallas Cowboy 40 yard line.
- 55:36Again, White, he was scissored in there
- 55:38by three separate Chicago Bears,
- 55:40the initial hit being made by number 90,
- 55:42Al Harris, 6'5", 240 from Arizona State.
- 55:44With the score, the Cowboys 3,
- 55:46what's the big tie box?
- 55:48Well, that's not good news for the Dallas Cowboys,
- 55:50as Tom Landry said,
- 55:52when a quarterback runs with a football,
- 55:54there's a lot of problems
- 55:56that can develop, and for the Cowboys right now,
- 55:58it looks as though Danny White
- 56:00may be taking the rest of the afternoon off.
- 56:02He really took a shot with sandwiched in
- 56:04by two Bears in the secondary,
- 56:06and was hit hard as he was going down
- 56:08from opposite directions
- 56:10and could have suffered some
- 56:12rib or shoulder injury, it appears.
- 56:14He's still laying down on the ground,
- 56:16and the Dallas trainer
- 56:18and the club position are out there
- 56:20attending to him.
- 56:22As we said earlier, Eric Kipple
- 56:24through two touchdown passes
- 56:26to give Detroit a 27 victory over Kansas City.
- 56:28The win lifted the Lions record to 7
- 56:30and 6 while Kansas City slipped to 8 and 5.
- 56:32Kipple marks Detroit
- 56:3473 yards on its first possession,
- 56:36capping the drive with a 10 yard TDPast
- 56:38to tie down David Hill.
- 56:40The ultimate wide receiver for Eddie Scott
- 56:42with a 30 yard scoring strike
- 56:44with 429 left in the first half.
- 56:46Danny White
- 56:48has left the field under his own power,
- 56:50and Dallas supporters hope that he was only
- 56:52winded, the ball was recovered by Doug
- 56:54flying for the Chicago Bears
- 56:56who will start now first in Gen A to Dallas
- 56:58for the 4th side 3-3.
- 57:00We have 7 minutes 15 seconds remaining
- 57:02to be played in the first half here
- 57:04at Texas Stadium and Irving, Texas on this
- 57:06Thanksgiving afternoon.
- 57:08The Bears have started Lindsay at their own
- 57:1043, their own 17, their own 20,
- 57:12and their own 44.
- 57:14This is the best field position Chicago has enjoyed
- 57:16almost at the 40 yard line of Dallas.
- 57:18Danny White 3 out of 7
- 57:2066 yards,
- 57:22and they are working on his next
- 57:24over on the Cowboys sideline right now.
- 57:26What do you do on first down?
- 57:28Do you go deep and try to get the score right here?
- 57:30I would go to the tight end.
- 57:32I think the tight end has been underused
- 57:34in the Bears attack all season long.
- 57:36I think
- 57:38with everybody keying out of Walter Payton
- 57:40a little play fake into the line
- 57:42and Payton on a dive and you pop it
- 57:44you've got a big strong quarterback like this.
- 57:46Well we've got it figured out.
- 57:48Let's see if the Bears have here.
- 57:50They come up to the line.
- 57:52They have it standing in the 6th and the 5th
- 57:54and they back to the 9th formation 2 way ahead.
- 57:56I'll warn you Payton.
- 57:58I haven't.
- 58:00I'm putting out to the left side.
- 58:02That's back to the left sideline.
- 58:04And it's gathered in.
- 58:06And it's a hit and it is a rick squat.
- 58:08He's still down.
- 58:10He has hit hard at about the 28 yards line.
- 58:12And it's there
- 58:14under the man who may say hip.
- 58:16And now it will be numbers of the Chicago training
- 58:18champ going back and now the indication
- 58:20is incomplete.
- 58:22D.D. Lewis was over there screaming
- 58:24that Watts did not have possession of the football
- 58:26when he came down. In fact, it did not.
- 58:28The ball came loose.
- 58:30The back official did not make the indication.
- 58:32They had a conclave and finally
- 58:34it was ruled incomplete
- 58:36on the pass to Ricky Watts.
- 58:38Then seven goes over. Watts is down now.
- 58:40Dennis Sherman with a tremendous hit.
- 58:4236 miles to second down.
- 58:44Excellent call by the officials
- 58:46because the ball was clearly loose
- 58:48before Watts came down with it.
- 58:50And as Tom Barton, our engineer,
- 58:52correctly pointed out, a lot of the players
- 58:54for Chicago and the Cowboys will be having their
- 58:56Thanksgiving turkey with Nova Cane.
- 58:58Here is so right. Ricky Watts got up.
- 59:00He's coming off the field under his own power
- 59:02with numbers of the training staff on either side.
- 59:04Giving him a little assistance.
- 59:06It will be second down and ten yards to go at the 40 yard line.
- 59:08Ken Marjoram has come in now.
- 59:10Had a wide receiver.
- 59:12We pass five seconds for station identification.
- 59:14Mrs. Cecevius Radio Network.
- 59:16This is the American Forces Radio
- 59:18and Television Service.
- 59:20This is Lindsay Nosworth, Jim Kelly
- 59:22at Texas Stadium where the Cowboys
- 59:24and the Chicago Bears are in a three free
- 59:26tie. Second down, ten yards to go.
- 59:28Four Chicago Bears.
- 59:30Second down, ten yards to go.
- 59:32Four Chicago at the dollar.
- 59:3440 yards line. Six minutes, 59 seconds.
- 59:36That's the play in the first half. Brooks Williams.
- 59:38That's coming to the ball game at the side end now.
- 59:40Lindsay is quite accredited
- 59:42for the Chicago Bears defense.
- 59:44It's three free. This seven, two out of nine
- 59:46passing only seven yards. Still a five foot ball game.
- 59:48Marjoram's in a wide right.
- 59:50Evans now back. That's close over to the middle end.
- 59:52This one is gathered in.
- 59:54It's tight for the football but taken for a completed pass
- 59:56by Brooks Williams.
- 59:58That's a good one.
- 1:00:00That is hands on the ball as well but Williams got it.
- 1:00:02Had it been completed just inside the 28 yard line.
- 1:00:04There's the four year tight end
- 1:00:06out of North Carolina number 83.
- 1:00:08Good size, good hands.
- 1:00:106-4, 2-26. Simply a little curl pattern
- 1:00:12to the outside. They get the linebacker
- 1:00:14isolated out of one on one. He clears the linebacker.
- 1:00:16It's the safety man's responsibility. Michael Downs came up.
- 1:00:18Tried to strip him of the football
- 1:00:20but a good grab by the tight end. First down, Bears
- 1:00:22driving in down the territory.
- 1:00:24There's Brooks and Tim at the Dallas.
- 1:00:26He's running back to the linebacker.
- 1:00:28It's Matt Sui.
- 1:00:30Up there, Peyton is the tailbacker of the
- 1:00:32linebacker. Evans now.
- 1:00:34That's back across the line.
- 1:00:36It's getting inside the 25 versus the 23 yard line.
- 1:00:38Charlie Waters, the veteran.
- 1:00:40Strong safety. He made the tackle.
- 1:00:42He gained a five yard on the play second and five.
- 1:00:44Matt Sui from 10 states.
- 1:00:46Throwing the big block on the left side.
- 1:00:48Water Peyton saw the full close up there.
- 1:00:50Cut it back against the grain and picked up four.
- 1:00:52Second down at six.
- 1:00:54He's winding down. Five, 50 left in the first half.
- 1:00:56In a three free football game
- 1:00:58the Dallas Cowboys came in.
- 1:01:00Favored in some quarters by as much as two touchdowns.
- 1:01:02Double tied in the linebacker.
- 1:01:04Robin Arell all 240 pounds.
- 1:01:06Comes in there now. Second and five running back
- 1:01:08into the night of formation. Evans waiting for the snap.
- 1:01:10Here's a quick picture.
- 1:01:12Peyton drives the right side.
- 1:01:14Jenny's fast forward and gets to the 20 yard line.
- 1:01:16Charlie calls for another yard.
- 1:01:18It'll be spotted after 20.
- 1:01:20For a gain of three and I'll make it three down
- 1:01:22to the 10 yard line.
- 1:01:24Matt and Ed Jones in the makes the tackle.
- 1:01:26Now this is an interesting place all for Neil Armstrong
- 1:01:28in the 7th and company.
- 1:01:30Walter Peyton 17 carries 180 yards
- 1:01:32on the afternoon.
- 1:01:34You don't want to risk an interception right here.
- 1:01:36You want to come out of this drive.
- 1:01:38The drive you started in Dallas Territory
- 1:01:40with some points on the afternoon
- 1:01:42or some points on this particular drive.
- 1:01:44He was thick pass but obviously
- 1:01:46the way they've run in the first half
- 1:01:48he got a key on number 34, Walter Peyton.
- 1:01:50He's got a key on number 34.
- 1:01:52Peyton's way to the snap.
- 1:01:54Three is just ahead of Peyton.
- 1:01:56Peyton gets the snap now and he's back to
- 1:01:58the corner.
- 1:02:00The Dallas defense led by John Dustman.
- 1:02:02Randy White.
- 1:02:04He's got a key on him.
- 1:02:06That's exactly what John Dust did.
- 1:02:08He simply swithered through the line
- 1:02:10and evaded his block.
- 1:02:12He was waiting for Peyton almost
- 1:02:14for the time that Walter Peyton took the pitch.
- 1:02:16Word from the Dallas bench.
- 1:02:18Randy White suffering bruised ribs.
- 1:02:20He is being checked over now.
- 1:02:22And no decision yet is to make
- 1:02:24as to whether or not he will return.
- 1:02:26And I'm a lady who will hold.
- 1:02:28It's a 30 that makes it a 40 yard field goal to jump.
- 1:02:30But John Ravettto.
- 1:02:32John Ravettto is stepping a 40 yarder.
- 1:02:34It's down, it's up, it's there
- 1:02:36and it's not good.
- 1:02:38It's far to the left side.
- 1:02:40And it was put in play by Dallas.
- 1:02:42That's the line of skimmish.
- 1:02:44He was kicked outside the 20 yard line.
- 1:02:46He's on the main side at 3-3.
- 1:02:48And he's got some all
- 1:02:50and some allot of skimmish.
- 1:02:52On the 22 yard line.
- 1:02:56Then Carano is going to corner back
- 1:02:58to Dallas Cowboys.
- 1:03:00Carano will be the corner back.
- 1:03:02Bruised ribs for Danny White.
- 1:03:04And the Cowboys will start
- 1:03:06outside their own 22 yard line.
- 1:03:08Here in the 23.
- 1:03:10First and 10.
- 1:03:12He's a five year man.
- 1:03:14He's out at the Bottle-Ox-Figus.
- 1:03:16He's only thrown 12 passes all season long.
- 1:03:18Completing three of them.
- 1:03:20And he's in there now.
- 1:03:22Don't forget to join Jack Buck
- 1:03:24and Hank Scram coming up this Monday night
- 1:03:26from the Orange Bowl in Miami
- 1:03:28as Don Schuller's Dolphin
- 1:03:30dies for the lead in the ASC.
- 1:03:32He will play host to the Philadelphia Eagles.
- 1:03:34Dies for the lead in the NFC.
- 1:03:36The game coming up at 8.50.
- 1:03:38Airsoft Eastern thoughts on Monday, November 30.
- 1:03:40Then on Thursday, December 3,
- 1:03:42Cleveland will play at Houston.
- 1:03:44Again, airtime is 8.50.
- 1:03:46Pittsburgh and Oakland on Monday, December 7.
- 1:03:48Lindsay and I will have a double header game for you
- 1:03:50on Saturday, December 12.
- 1:03:52Jeff will be in Cleveland.
- 1:03:54Lindsay and I will be in the Silver Dome
- 1:03:56in Moniac, Michigan. Minnesota Vikings down to
- 1:03:58Detroit Lions.
- 1:04:00Another double header here on CBS Radio
- 1:04:02on Saturday, December 12.
- 1:04:04That game we told you about then on the 19.
- 1:04:06Another double header.
- 1:04:08Alright, first and 10 for the Dallas Cowboys.
- 1:04:10They're going to be playing the first half.
- 1:04:12The cornerback.
- 1:04:14George sets the tail back.
- 1:04:16He gets the handoff.
- 1:04:18He gets up to the 25.
- 1:04:20Two yards for Tony.
- 1:04:22George makes the second half.
- 1:04:24And they make the tackle from his free-facely
- 1:04:26spot for the Chicago Bears.
- 1:04:28Dallas drive so far in the first half.
- 1:04:30They start at their own four.
- 1:04:32They're 10 to 47 for the Cowboys.
- 1:04:34Their own 25, their own 23.
- 1:04:36And their own 23 yard line.
- 1:04:38And the Bears, Lindsay, you've got the starting
- 1:04:40quarterback out of the Cowboys.
- 1:04:42Maybe you can go in at half time, five free-off.
- 1:04:44They can suddenly think, hey, we can win this football game.
- 1:04:46And Gerardo brings him up.
- 1:04:48George sets the ball and sets back their inner slot.
- 1:04:50Well, he's in the ballgame.
- 1:04:52He's in motion outside right.
- 1:04:54There's the pass to Paul East.
- 1:04:56And again, and it is incomplete.
- 1:04:58Off his fingers, Jeff's trying for their
- 1:05:00self-sensitive. He was trying to pass.
- 1:05:02He gets the ball before he could hit the test.
- 1:05:04He goes not so it's going to be very down
- 1:05:06the 75 yard line for the Dallas Cowboys.
- 1:05:08And you cannot fault the young Dallas
- 1:05:10quarterback there. Colano is 63198.
- 1:05:12As we've said, in his five year
- 1:05:14put their bottle off. That ball was
- 1:05:16thrown right on the money. That time, the receiver
- 1:05:18did not make a very catchable breath.
- 1:05:20Third down play coming down
- 1:05:22for the Dallas Cowboys. Rocks stop down
- 1:05:24to get completion 3-27 and they're ending
- 1:05:26in the first half.
- 1:05:28Now on a pace that time, put good pressure
- 1:05:30on Colano. A pace actually.
- 1:05:32If Colano gets third, the next Dallas
- 1:05:34to see if he proved fair.
- 1:05:36Carrano now in the shotgun gets the direct shot and he puts it on the left side of Tony Hill
- 1:05:41and just waits.
- 1:05:42Tony Hill and Richardson playing tag back and forth with the pass.
- 1:05:47I think they should have been a minute ahead of Carl.
- 1:05:49That was us.
- 1:05:50Tony Hill was talking to one of the officials but it would be fourth and they were running
- 1:05:53into him just getting a top barrel with the man, putting the pressure on Carrano, making
- 1:05:57him unload the ball before he wanted to.
- 1:05:59He clenched Carrano and he was down.
- 1:06:03I'm not so sure that Tony Hill doesn't have justification for a complaint.
- 1:06:06It was right in front of the Chicago bench.
- 1:06:08But back there on the defense, number 20, Reuben Henderson in a rookie from San Diego State
- 1:06:14and there was some bumping going on way beyond the five-yard zone.
- 1:06:17Danny White comes in to do the planting.
- 1:06:19He is the number one runner and he's going to purchase the river drips, gets the snap,
- 1:06:23fishers deep for Chicago.
- 1:06:24As the fireman kick off to the right side, there'll be no run back and he's the 41 and
- 1:06:29he takes the Dallas bounce.
- 1:06:30It's inside the 25 and still going.
- 1:06:33It's inside the 20 and still going.
- 1:06:35What a roll!
- 1:06:36And it's at the 16 yard line.
- 1:06:4359 yards left.
- 1:06:46What's all the hull of a little upfield?
- 1:06:48Back in the 25 yard line, tempers are blurring.
- 1:06:51Heavenly markers gone down.
- 1:06:54Layers dotted around the officials.
- 1:06:56Chicago indicating that it is a Dallas heavily and that's what it is.
- 1:07:03Just heavily the referee indicates that it is a personal foul.
- 1:07:07I guess the Cowboys and everything have tell us about his 30 places of home at the 30 yard line.
- 1:07:13Just heavily the referee.
- 1:07:15And it's very rough, guys. Number 55 after the play.
- 1:07:20First down.
- 1:07:22Danny Stradlin, a rookie, made a rookie mistake.
- 1:07:25A reserve linebacker out of Tennessee on the specialty team and he was the culprit.
- 1:07:30So that negated a 60 yard punch, backed it up and it's net 45 yard change.
- 1:07:36First and 10 bears at their own 30.
- 1:07:39Evans is up there now waiting to take the snap.
- 1:07:41Brandon looks right through his line and it's completed.
- 1:07:45Second and a rookie left at the longest away.
- 1:07:47Samwell is on the recovery cover.
- 1:07:52Michael Downes recovered.
- 1:07:54At the young stack of now, Michael Downes seemed to have it and a little twist of stuff going on down there as again the official message step is.
- 1:08:04And we'll get this straight out of any minute.
- 1:08:07Dan Neal, the center nine years out of Kentucky having to work with Michael Downes.
- 1:08:11Simply a sort of square off pattern to the wise receiver number 80, Ricky Watts, who made the grab and it was ripped to the ball.
- 1:08:18And the intensity of this football game ever since they hit on Danny White, has picked up noticeably on both sides.
- 1:08:25So the Dallas Cowboys get the ball after Chicago 41 yard line on the recovery by Downes and it's Glenn Carrano stills water backing.
- 1:08:32Carrano is now waiting for the grab now.
- 1:08:37Split back.
- 1:08:40Carrano drops back to look.
- 1:08:42Looks to the right side and guns the football way short.
- 1:08:45Way, way short.
- 1:08:47It's complete. Hit the turf in front of Drew Pierce.
- 1:08:49Way in front of Drew Pierce.
- 1:08:51Second and 10th, 41 yard line.
- 1:08:53Interesting. Tom Landry called the pass play on first down.
- 1:08:56You've got a young quarterback in there who's coming into this football game.
- 1:08:59He has the kind of confidence he has in his offensive line and in his backup quarterback.
- 1:09:04That's time.
- 1:09:05Understandably tight.
- 1:09:07I would say Glenn simply held onto the football and just fired.
- 1:09:10Word from the bench.
- 1:09:11Danny White still being examined.
- 1:09:13He has, they say, a bruised chest wall and will not return to quarterback in this half.
- 1:09:18Carrano has it all.
- 1:09:19He gives it to Tony Doherty.
- 1:09:20He's free for a hole in the right side.
- 1:09:22Get this side of the 35.
- 1:09:23It goes all the way to the 32 yard line.
- 1:09:25Got by Gary Fentz, the test for 32.
- 1:09:28And the door is bent, exploding over the right side.
- 1:09:30Again, Curt Peterson, 65. Jim Cooper, 61.
- 1:09:33There's a guard.
- 1:09:34He's tackled it respectively on that side.
- 1:09:36I don't think I'm a huge hole.
- 1:09:37Clock winding down.
- 1:09:38230 and counting.
- 1:09:39Cowboys have all three of their timeouts left as do the Chicago Bears.
- 1:09:43It's going to be 30 down and a long yard to go.
- 1:09:46More than hours, Cowboys.
- 1:09:50They come up in an eye formation initially now.
- 1:09:52Tony Doherty sets the veil back around the swing.
- 1:09:54They hit him.
- 1:09:55Now they split it out by sending Doherty says left.
- 1:09:57Back to the sail back.
- 1:09:58Lots of movement.
- 1:09:59Doherty in motion.
- 1:10:00The wing left across.
- 1:10:01George dropped by Colorado and mixed up and he goes nowhere.
- 1:10:06And now Harris finally pulled him down.
- 1:10:09He's gone out of there and was all alone.
- 1:10:12As we approach the two minute warning, we have reached it.
- 1:10:16And that is the automatic timeout.
- 1:10:18Two minutes of warning.
- 1:10:19We'll be back in just a moment.
- 1:10:22Los Angeles Rams coach Ray Malavasi says Pat Hayden will start at quarter by 10.
- 1:10:26He will start at quarterback for the rest of the season.
- 1:10:29Hayden was bent three games ago and replaced by Dan Pastoreni.
- 1:10:33But Pastoreni was unable to reverse the Rams current slide.
- 1:10:37And Hayden came off the bench last Sunday to lead the team against San Francisco
- 1:10:41and did a fine job even though the 49ers won the game on a field goal kick by Ray Wershing
- 1:10:46in the final seconds.
- 1:10:48The Rams next game is Sunday against the Steelers in Pittsburgh
- 1:10:51and their playoff chances are getting slimmer and slimmer.
- 1:10:55Hayden Fry has been named the UPI's Big Ten coach of the year
- 1:10:59for guiding the Iowa Hawkeyes into the Rose Bowl.
- 1:11:02Iowa, which hasn't had a winning season since 1961,
- 1:11:06claimed to share the Big Ten crown in its final game of the season
- 1:11:10when the Hawkeyes defeated Michigan State 36-7 and Ohio State upended Michigan.
- 1:11:16Iowa finished the regular season with an eight and three record
- 1:11:19wins over Nebraska, UCLA and Michigan.
- 1:11:26Here at Texas Stadium, the score is 3-3.
- 1:11:28It is four-downs, about two and a half or three yards to go.
- 1:11:31The ball is a little bit squarely after Chicago 33.
- 1:11:35And the field goal you entered is in there for the Dallas Cowboys.
- 1:11:38Charlie Waters is in the hole.
- 1:11:40Raphael Steps in. It will be something like a 50 yards.
- 1:11:43They get a blind up.
- 1:11:44They'll mark it for you exactly.
- 1:11:47We have had a field goal game so far.
- 1:11:49The Chicago Bears just missed one.
- 1:11:51And now Waters is going to set up at the 41, making the 51 yard attempt.
- 1:11:56From 51 yard attempt for Raphael Steps in, Haydn Markle right.
- 1:12:00It's five out of seven between the 40 and the 49.
- 1:12:02This is his first try from outside of 50 yards on the year.
- 1:12:06Waters and outstretched.
- 1:12:08Wait for the snuff. Get the high snuff.
- 1:12:09Put your down here. Steps in, kick.
- 1:12:11And it is short. Short.
- 1:12:14And it goes over after a long of a finish, which is the 33 yard line.
- 1:12:18Chris and Tess for the Chicago Bears.
- 1:12:21I don't forget that the Dallas Cowboys have lost Danny White,
- 1:12:24not only as a quarterback, but also as a holder for Stepsie Ann.
- 1:12:27Waters is the backup number 41.
- 1:12:29The snap was high.
- 1:12:30It's Aaron at the Charlie Waters.
- 1:12:32And Stepsie Ann kicks about five or six yards shot.
- 1:12:35So it stays a three-three game.
- 1:12:37Take a look at the total yardage of the game.
- 1:12:39The Dallas Cowboys 146 yards.
- 1:12:41The Bears, brothers, 146 yards total yardage.
- 1:12:44And Dallas is 99 yards.
- 1:12:46So quite a credit to that Chicago defense who came in rank rather low
- 1:12:51in the NFC as far as things go against the course.
- 1:12:53One of the more potent offenses is the NFC and the entire NFL, the Dallas Cowboys.
- 1:12:57Here come the Bears.
- 1:12:58Our first and seventh-terms are on 33 yards on our mix-up on the strap
- 1:13:01at the Chicago Re-Paint Procession.
- 1:13:03They recover the fumble.
- 1:13:04Matt Sui got the football.
- 1:13:06As Evan took the seven-thirty, Becky dropped the ball.
- 1:13:08And Sui was in the right set as he fell on.
- 1:13:11So they take the loss.
- 1:13:13They keep the football at the 29 yards on second and 14.
- 1:13:16They're up there once again.
- 1:13:20Evan's dropping back.
- 1:13:22And of all the batters back, if he started to pass on the player batters,
- 1:13:26he was fatted right back into the space by an upright environment.
- 1:13:31It's two-tall John.
- 1:13:32All six feet nine inches of him.
- 1:13:34And so it's going to be Sui down and 14.
- 1:13:36And the 29-yard line.
- 1:13:39And an interesting play call with the way the Dallas Cowboys defense has been coming on.
- 1:13:44The Bears obviously don't want to risk a turnover here.
- 1:13:47They're all tied at turnover department to want a piece.
- 1:13:49The Cowboys and Bears are.
- 1:13:51You might want to go with some kind of a deep batter.
- 1:13:53So if it is picked off, you'll at least have the Cowboys out of field goal.
- 1:13:56Evan's back to throw.
- 1:13:57And it goes up to the middle of the line.
- 1:13:59Pass to Mike Stegel.
- 1:14:00And Mike Stegel.
- 1:14:01That's getting it in complete.
- 1:14:03Actually, with up to right side-mounted it turned out.
- 1:14:06Walls were covering him.
- 1:14:08And completely brings out the funding in his right hand before the defense of the Dallas Cowboys.
- 1:14:12Actually, Walls had a better shot at that football.
- 1:14:15You can see that Vashnakel did.
- 1:14:16He had inside position.
- 1:14:17Drive for drive.
- 1:14:18124 left to go on the clock.
- 1:14:20And the Dallas Cowboys will get it back with again.
- 1:14:22All three-time outs remaining.
- 1:14:24Evan's now four out of 13.
- 1:14:26Passing for just 36 yards.
- 1:14:28Walls leads to the national football league in intersections with Ben.
- 1:14:31We're trying for another there.
- 1:14:33Parsons in deep frustration.
- 1:14:34James Jones standing on his own 30 yard line.
- 1:14:36Parsons gets the snap.
- 1:14:38Puts it up high through Jackery.
- 1:14:40Jones, yeah, that's the third.
- 1:14:42They've got to return on.
- 1:14:43And he comes to the left side.
- 1:14:44And Jack breakthroughs.
- 1:14:45He was looking for daylight and couldn't.
- 1:14:47And he stops at the 38 yard line by Todd Bell.
- 1:14:50It is a 41 yard spot.
- 1:14:52So the Cowboys start with 1-13 on the clock.
- 1:14:55You may be the first half.
- 1:14:56They have them all first in his year-old 39 yard line.
- 1:14:59And Todd Bell perhaps a touchdown saving tackle around the ankle of Jones
- 1:15:04because they have the wall set up on the right side.
- 1:15:06Jones gave a little stutter step as if he were headed that way.
- 1:15:09Cut it back against the left.
- 1:15:10And Bell was the last man between him and a lot of artificial astrosphere.
- 1:15:14Now for the story tie 3-3.
- 1:15:17Down the Dallas Cowboys movement here.
- 1:15:19They go under the shotgun.
- 1:15:20Miranda still cornered it.
- 1:15:22He gets the most snap, but he can close it.
- 1:15:24As it's complete, my heel as it goes out of bounds.
- 1:15:28That's a 44 yard line of Chicago.
- 1:15:31Tony Hill.
- 1:15:32Jerry Campbell made the tackle.
- 1:15:36Second and 10 for the Dallas Cowboys.
- 1:15:38They have them all not just inside the...
- 1:15:42It is inside the 44 yard line.
- 1:15:44I just wanted to be on the last marker.
- 1:15:46Tony Hill did something interesting after the play.
- 1:15:49Lindsey, who's a five year veteran out of Stanford,
- 1:15:51one of the great offensive weapons of the Cowboys.
- 1:15:53But he rushed back into the Cowboy huddle
- 1:15:55and had a young quarterback, Glenn Corano,
- 1:15:57and I said, all right, keep your boys.
- 1:15:58That's the way to go.
- 1:15:59And I was keeping strong alive.
- 1:16:00And it's the end of shotgun.
- 1:16:01Corano gets the snap.
- 1:16:02Now Stankler slides this down to the right end.
- 1:16:04Complete.
- 1:16:05Still on the other side.
- 1:16:06It's almost the ball.
- 1:16:07Chicago has recovered.
- 1:16:09First and 10.
- 1:16:10Chicago at that 35.
- 1:16:12Jerry Smith got the football.
- 1:16:14Hill had it for a moment, but as he was hit,
- 1:16:17it was away from him.
- 1:16:19And was recovered by Schmid, who made the hit
- 1:16:21and made the recovery ball.
- 1:16:23Again, an indication of just how hard
- 1:16:25a hitting of football game this has become.
- 1:16:27Actually, it was pretty hard hitting from the bear standpoint.
- 1:16:30Most of the game.
- 1:16:31Fencing separated Drew Hill from the ball earlier.
- 1:16:33This time Preston Pearson open at the 30 yard line.
- 1:16:36Had the ball.
- 1:16:37Jerry Schmid came in.
- 1:16:38Fencing came in and separated him.
- 1:16:40And Schmid comes up with a loose football.
- 1:16:42The bear is going to break.
- 1:16:44One minute remaining to be played in the first half.
- 1:16:47Matt Sui is the long set back, dropping back now.
- 1:16:4911.
- 1:16:50Over the little end.
- 1:16:51One, two, three, four.
- 1:16:54And the second interception by Steve Wilson.
- 1:16:57And he gets the ball in his home 48 yard line.
- 1:16:59He's down there.
- 1:17:01Dallas Smith is dead on the Wilson Interception.
- 1:17:03And the ball is 48.
- 1:17:06What?
- 1:17:07Making the effort to protect the ball,
- 1:17:09but the interception by Wilson.
- 1:17:13You got it, I got it.
- 1:17:14And so Dallas has it.
- 1:17:15I'm 30 on this Thanksgiving Day.
- 1:17:17Watts tried to make a one-handed grab
- 1:17:19at about the 45 yard line.
- 1:17:21Wilson comes up with his second interception of the year.
- 1:17:24He's simply took it away from the Chicago-wide receiver.
- 1:17:26And then went away from it.
- 1:17:28First down, 10 yards to go.
- 1:17:29Cowboys at the road 48.
- 1:17:3152 seconds on the clock.
- 1:17:32Which starts on this map.
- 1:17:33End of the shotgun formation now.
- 1:17:36Gerano waits for the ball.
- 1:17:37Motion across the spring.
- 1:17:39Gerano has the ball.
- 1:17:40He's dropping back.
- 1:17:41Looks good as well.
- 1:17:43And push, got it.
- 1:17:45Dallas it is.
- 1:17:46Over 25, down by push, got it.
- 1:17:49He's beat Scott Bell.
- 1:17:51He got around Scott Bell with 12 against push.
- 1:17:5410 Dallas at the Chicago 25 yard line.
- 1:17:57And how long ago was it?
- 1:17:59We said both teams had all three timeouts.
- 1:18:01The man in the ball is being standed by three
- 1:18:03deprecations.
- 1:18:04This is the last minute and a half.
- 1:18:06What a closure by the young quarterback
- 1:18:08out of the bottom line.
- 1:18:09He's taken five years.
- 1:18:10He stands up there 6-3, 198.
- 1:18:12David the pump fake.
- 1:18:13Oxtas arm, bonded-favorite receiver.
- 1:18:15Freaking out a corner pattern.
- 1:18:17Johnson with a great hand.
- 1:18:18He could start the most teams in the NFL.
- 1:18:20But here in Dallas, what are so decent wide receivers?
- 1:18:22He's used to the backup.
- 1:18:24Johnson comes out to a slide left.
- 1:18:26Not Gerano.
- 1:18:27Gifts under shotgun formation.
- 1:18:29Waiting for the drinks.
- 1:18:30Not Gerano.
- 1:18:31He's got the ball.
- 1:18:32Out back and look.
- 1:18:33And throws and it's in complete.
- 1:18:35Got it close to Tony Hill.
- 1:18:37Johnson was out there swinging towards the goal line.
- 1:18:39But the incompletion makes the second attempt
- 1:18:41at the 25 yard line.
- 1:18:43They're keeping Tony Doris at number 33
- 1:18:45in the backfield to help the young quarterback
- 1:18:47try to relieve some of the pressure.
- 1:18:49Some of the heat that bears undoubtedly
- 1:18:50are throwing at him right now.
- 1:18:52It might be a good opportunity
- 1:18:53since they're keying off on the quarterback.
- 1:18:55To give it to Doris 7, either the draw play,
- 1:18:57let's hear how about floating Doris
- 1:18:59set out into one of the flats.
- 1:19:00Clearing out the zone and let Doris
- 1:19:02set to do what he does best.
- 1:19:03That's run with the football.
- 1:19:05All right, it is second and 10.
- 1:19:06The ball is at the 25 yard line.
- 1:19:08The Cowboys are coming up to the line now.
- 1:19:10Gerano up there,
- 1:19:12coming to the center of the ring.
- 1:19:13Oxtas, Oxtas, Oxtas,
- 1:19:14Oxtas, Oxtas, Oxtas,
- 1:19:15Oxtas, Oxtas, Oxtas,
- 1:19:16Oxtas trees on the right,
- 1:19:17and Oxtas.
- 1:19:18Back to the corner.
- 1:19:20On the left side weQué
- 1:19:29.
- 1:19:30Two- Customer
- 1:19:39to 25
- 1:19:45The play was over. Doug Frank, seven years from Ohio State, came over and popped Pearson from behind after the ball.
- 1:19:50It clearly sailed over his head and the play was whistled said. The line of scrimmage for 25 yards line.
- 1:19:56He bears three. The Cowboys three 35 seconds to go third and ten. Interesting play call.
- 1:20:01Again, maybe not a bad time. Try to get the ball to the door set one on one out of the blank.
- 1:20:05Now three out of stuff. Cowboys, stay on the shotgun. Ocean across, that's Naldi.
- 1:20:10Gerano has them all in retreat. Make sure. Fetally Marcus Bencrohn, he scores the ball the incomplete.
- 1:20:17Now the marker of that three shot. The line must flag.
- 1:20:21What is being laid to the left, three shot, everything.
- 1:20:26Illegal procedure, he indicates he gets valid.
- 1:20:30That's a five yard penalty. That was incomplete. Everything will tell us about it.
- 1:20:38Illegal chip, offense, two men moving, three two, four down.
- 1:20:44They declined the penalty to bring up the four down and Dallas now brings the field goal unit on again.
- 1:20:49Charlie Waters coming out the whole little Raphael left here.
- 1:20:53It's time they spotted us a hash mark right. The ball is squarely under 25 so you figure something like a 42, 43 it'll be.
- 1:21:02Waters will hold. Deftian kicking hash mark right, 43 yard accept. 30 seconds on the clock which starts on the snap.
- 1:21:11Storytimes three three and the closing second to the first pass. Here at Texas City Waters puts you down.
- 1:21:17Deftian versus this one carries and it is so good wide.
- 1:21:22It's down high enough and long enough and it was wide and the right is so good. All goes over to Chicago at the 25 yard line
- 1:21:29and Sammy Sontore is still tied. Chicago Bears three and the Dallas Cowboys three.
- 1:21:34And most teams still have all three time outs left. What a wild and woolly two minutes of football.
- 1:21:39It's turned it out on the right side. It stays very misted by about a yard and a half wide to the right.
- 1:21:44Deftian not having a particularly good afternoon. Neither are the Dallas Cowboys.
- 1:21:48They came in nine up three down, five with the Eagles and the NFC.
- 1:21:52Two touchdowns favored over teams that is looking more towards Christmas than they are towards the rest of the NFL.
- 1:21:57The Chicago Bears three wins nine losses and we are dead even with 25 seconds to go on half number one, five, three, three.
- 1:22:04The Bears and the Cowboys.
- 1:22:07And here comes the seven. The quarterback leading the Chicago Bears up there.
- 1:22:11He drives the quarterback carry and moves straight out of the right yard to about the 31 yard line.
- 1:22:17Randy White coming in to make the tackle again at six yards, five then seven.
- 1:22:21You just hit the quick snap and go to the right yard and picked up six.
- 1:22:25You wonder what 25 seconds left to go. You're tied three-all.
- 1:22:29You've got some good speed there in Ricky Watts. Why not put it up?
- 1:22:32Why not hope for a long pass completion to get into field goal range or maybe a penalty?
- 1:22:37And down has one up.
- 1:22:39There's the gun ending the first half with the score. Chicago three to Cowboys three.
- 1:22:44LaVetto is teaming up the ball and in just a moment we'll be joining Lindsay Nelson and Jim Kelly at Texas.
- 1:22:53John LaVetto thinking all four Chicago. He's heated up to 35.
- 1:22:56James Jones is still in the lead for your flank by Newsom and Fellows.
- 1:23:00Here comes LaVetto and the ball is in the air.
- 1:23:03Jones goes over in front of Fellows. He takes the ball in the 70s.
- 1:23:06The children's assistant comes back to midfield 20-25.
- 1:23:09Jones has stopped at the 27 yard line.
- 1:23:12So the Dallas Cowboys get first position and this is second half three-three tie.
- 1:23:16LaValle can now make the tackle and they start at their own 27 yard line.
- 1:23:21And today the Dallas Cowboys will start with Glenn Carrero at quarter by.
- 1:23:26LaValle in his fifth year from Devon Alarc
- 1:23:35LaValle comes up now. Ben Senn running back into the I-4 formation.
- 1:23:39The first set moves to the right of Ron Springs and I'm going back into the I-4 formation to sail back.
- 1:23:43Lots of movement in the Dallas offensive set.
- 1:23:45Right end debris and motion across.
- 1:23:47Stopping back. Here's the pass and it's incomplete to Tony Hill.
- 1:23:51I'm going to let you see.
- 1:23:52Wrigley-Marcus strong. Wrigley-Marcus strong.
- 1:23:54Ruben Henderson was covering and the marker was strong there at the 38 yard line.
- 1:23:58This is going to be a very simple square out that time for Tony Hill.
- 1:24:04Hill of course one of the primary receivers. He is third on Cowboy receivers list.
- 1:24:09Passing interference defense. Number 21st stop.
- 1:24:13Ruben Henderson covering and defense at the first set now.
- 1:24:17Boy that's a very close call. That ball was delivered right in there.
- 1:24:20If he hit him he hit him with the right shoulder.
- 1:24:22He may have got the right shoulder in there.
- 1:24:24Before the ball was delivered to Tony Hill there was 31 sketches.
- 1:24:27611 yards. Three touchdowns for the Dallas couple.
- 1:24:30Tony Joyce has gone out of the ball game. James Jones is in there.
- 1:24:33Here's a quick picture on Frank's left left side.
- 1:24:35Put the shoulder down and drive to the 43 yard line.
- 1:24:43Harris Damon makes a tackle along with Henderson.
- 1:24:46He will get the run.
- 1:24:49Ron Spring 133 carries. 489 yards. 6 touchdowns on the year.
- 1:24:55Ball might have popped loose on that last carry.
- 1:24:57But the court got it back before he picked up good yards.
- 1:25:01Second down five yards to go at the 43. Tony Joyce has come back into the ball game.
- 1:25:05That goes through here from out to a wide left. Tony Hill out to a wide right.
- 1:25:09Running back to a well split. Now they even him up.
- 1:25:12Toronto is waiting for the snap.
- 1:25:14Toronto to Tony Joyce. He passed the left side and he can't get away.
- 1:25:18He is thrown by Al Harris.
- 1:25:20He hit him in a big fair hug as he tried to go wide to the left side
- 1:25:23and he dropped back at the 41 yard line.
- 1:25:26Al Harris is 6'5", 240. It is third year from Arizona State.
- 1:25:29And he is having some kind of a football game.
- 1:25:31He is beating his man over there on the right side of that Chicago defensive line.
- 1:25:36He is going up again to tight end. Billy Joe Dupree in most formations.
- 1:25:40At number 61 Jim Cooper. But he has been sliding through there
- 1:25:43and has been in the backfield almost as soon as Dorset has been getting a lot of a handoff.
- 1:25:48Which Johnson comes into the ball game and Billy Joe Dupree goes out.
- 1:25:52It's a third and seven.
- 1:25:53Corano into the shotgun. Direct snap now for the Dallas Cowboys.
- 1:25:59Rod Slinges and Mushen across from the right set.
- 1:26:01The direct snap is taken by Corano.
- 1:26:03And he's hit. The midfielder for the ball is loose.
- 1:26:05And Dallas remains position at the 30 yard line.
- 1:26:08Doug Plank with the man who hit Corano.
- 1:26:10The ball popped away and it was gathered in by Kurt Peterson.
- 1:26:15Kurt Peterson in the offensive right guard.
- 1:26:17We covered the fumble and Dallas gets the football
- 1:26:19but it's four times after going to putt formation.
- 1:26:22There's that time came with two men blitzing one right up the middle of the other
- 1:26:26from the right corner back spot.
- 1:26:27And Doug Plank who is really playing some kind of a football game
- 1:26:31separated Corano from the football.
- 1:26:33Peterson with the recovery now works for the Cowboys bench.
- 1:26:36That bruised chest wall by Danny White. He will not be back today.
- 1:26:40That's right it's FDN back in putt formation.
- 1:26:42And Rafael FDN the runner puts it up there.
- 1:26:45Catch signal and it's made at the 37 yard line.
- 1:26:48Just Fisher coming across for Chicago. It will be first cut in at the 37 with a story tie.
- 1:26:54Chicago 3 Dallas 3 let's take time out.
- 1:26:57Former St. Louis Cardinals coach Bud Wilkinson will also set some kind of a record
- 1:27:03as a college football coach at Oklahoma said he is not negotiating to buy the NFL Cardinals.
- 1:27:10Jitto CBS Vice President Robert Highland.
- 1:27:13They were responding to a report in the sporting news this week naming them as members of a group
- 1:27:18that has all but completed the purchase of the St. Louis Cardinals football team.
- 1:27:22But Card Vice President Bing Divine quotes owner Billy Bidwell as saying the club is quote not for sale.
- 1:27:32In the college ranks again Frank Curse he fired earlier this week as Kentucky's coach
- 1:27:36said he's like you to sue the school for compensation for his lucrative radio and TV contract.
- 1:27:41Curse made his remarks Wednesday evening on his final statewide radio show.
- 1:27:45Curse was released after nine years as a Wildcats coach even though he still had three years left on his contract.
- 1:27:51The school has agreed to pay Curse yearly salary through December of 1984.
- 1:28:02And again to this tie at 3 3 here in the third quarter of the Chicago Bears get the ball for the first time in the second half
- 1:28:07and they'll start first and then at their own 37 yard line.
- 1:28:11Special assistant Ermaul Allen is saying the massive heart attack last Wednesday.
- 1:28:16Long time member of the coaching staff of the Dallas Cowboys.
- 1:28:19Works a great deal in research and game plan and scouting information he is recovering
- 1:28:23and now very best wishes to Ermaul Allen for his 3D recovery.
- 1:28:27Here comes the Bears now.
- 1:28:28That's seven things enough.
- 1:28:29Why have you seen the left and right?
- 1:28:31Lift back.
- 1:28:32Motion.
- 1:28:33All the way across by Vice President.
- 1:28:36Evan hanging off the Walder face.
- 1:28:38He drives the right side.
- 1:28:39Walder face and puts his head down and back to the 42 yard line.
- 1:28:42Fakes up five yards on the play so he's off running again there on the dock.
- 1:28:46He is amazing.
- 1:28:47He is just kind of flittering along that line of scrimmage waiting for the block to take place.
- 1:28:51They did the Cowboys headed for it up and some others he managed to pop it through there and still pick up five yards.
- 1:28:57It's been a big afternoon for Sweepers.
- 1:28:59Second down five yards to go at the 42 yard line.
- 1:29:02Vice President is coming to the left side.
- 1:29:07Marjoram to the right side running back to the 9th formation.
- 1:29:10Here we go.
- 1:29:11Head of Walder Payton.
- 1:29:12Walder Payton again drives the right side and again gets the first down at Mid-Seal.
- 1:29:18Walder Payton stops by Michael Down.
- 1:29:20Cherokee 3-15.
- 1:29:21That's a 50 yard line first in 10, Fort Chicago.
- 1:29:28And here comes Mike Tom all 243 pounds of them in there at the side end.
- 1:29:33Robin Earl is coming off for the Bears.

- 1:29:39Vince Evans the quarterback.
- 1:29:40He is quarterbacked from throughout the act.
- 1:29:42Running back to the 9th formation.

- 1:29:50Dallas again to Payton drives right guard and moves up to the 47 yard line.
- 1:29:56They got only three on that character and they second down at 7.
- 1:29:59Head 2-thall, John John Harvey Martin converts to make the stop.
- 1:30:03You know we talked at the top of the broadcast as one of the key matchups to watch Keith Van Horn for Rookie.
- 1:30:09The offensive tackle for the Bears 6-7-2-65 out of USC.
- 1:30:13Going up against 2-thall, John for the reference for the Cowboys number 72.
- 1:30:17It would seem the Rookie Keith Van Horn has been winning it on the line of scrimmage on the running place where 2-thall has been winning it on the pathway.
- 1:30:23Exactly.
- 1:30:24Vince Evans again, Vince Evans with a running back to the 9th formation.
- 1:30:28Get the pitch to the side of Payton.
- 1:30:30He passes the right side, cuts back inside and gets to the 44 yard line before Charlie Waters by him down.
- 1:30:36It will be 3rd and 4th now.
- 1:30:40And again the elusiveness of the Walder Peyton.
- 1:30:43Everton Walls number 54 on a safety blitz.
- 1:30:46Head Peyton, stop cold back at Midfield.
- 1:30:48Peyton just simply stopped.
- 1:30:50He'll slide on through and then Peyton tops it again and picks up another couple of yards.
- 1:30:543rd down for the Chicago Bears.
- 1:30:56Marcus Anderson is coming in now.
- 1:30:59Tom Tulane.
- 1:31:03Owen Setback.
- 1:31:06Evans waiting.
- 1:31:09By the draw play.
- 1:31:11And it is Suhey on the draw trying to get to the 6th but he's a little short I think.
- 1:31:14I think he's about a foot short.
- 1:31:16It'll defend himself and where he's fighting and then pick the long look.
- 1:31:20Then we'll find out.
- 1:31:21That's a draw play.
- 1:31:22Barnes and Downs.
- 1:31:24Coming to make the tackle.
- 1:31:25Along with John Dunn.
- 1:31:28He puts on squarely on the 40 yard line.
- 1:31:32It means that he's an inches away.
- 1:31:344th down and inches for the Chicago Bears.
- 1:31:36Double tight in the line but Mike Robin Robin earlier in there.
- 1:31:39Chicago's gonna go for it.
- 1:31:419 minutes 35 seconds left to play in the 3rd quarter.
- 1:31:44Story time 3-3.
- 1:31:464th down.
- 1:31:47It's just a good Chicago in the 40 yard line.
- 1:31:49And they pick up the 3rd down.
- 1:31:51Paterson's the field back in the eye.
- 1:31:53Contact.
- 1:31:544th down.
- 1:31:55And then Marcus whistles off the play.
- 1:31:58I think it was Mike Cobb.
- 1:32:00A little new action.
- 1:32:01Somebody a little new action.
- 1:32:024 year tight end down to Michigan State.
- 1:32:05He moved before the snap so that makes what was a relatively easy play where you need just inches.
- 1:32:11Now 4th and 5th that will change the play call and it will change the possession.
- 1:32:16There's the indication by referee Chuck Heverly.
- 1:32:185 yards left and it will be enforced against the Chicago Bears.
- 1:32:21And that brings the running in and out of the field.
- 1:32:29He just puts out the 45 yard line.
- 1:32:314th down.
- 1:32:32Paterson's done the punch.
- 1:32:34James Jones has gone back to Dallas sending his own 10 yard line.
- 1:32:40Both stars, E7 offense.
- 1:32:434th down.
- 1:32:44Mike Cobb decided to move before the snap.
- 1:32:48Custom 5.
- 1:32:49A little over-anchor.
- 1:32:50Paterson standing on his own 40 yard line waiting for the long snap.
- 1:32:54Dave Hoganberg makes the snap in deep on formation for Chicago.
- 1:33:02Paterson passes.
- 1:33:03Steps up.
- 1:33:04Gets the kick off.
- 1:33:05Eyes trajectory and Jones lets it go.
- 1:33:08Hit down the 5 and takes the Chicago bow.
- 1:33:10So if there's no run back, it's going to be killed by Chicago in the general area of the 10 yard line.
- 1:33:16From which point, it will be a first to get out of 34 yards left.
- 1:33:21So with a story tie of 3-3, we'll be back in a moment.
- 1:33:28In other sports news, the Soviet Union won the women's team title at the World Gymnastics Championships in Moscow on Thursday
- 1:33:36to complete the first team double since 1958.
- 1:33:40The Russian women were even more impressive than the men were 24 hours earlier,
- 1:33:45finishing nearly 5 points ahead of China.
- 1:33:47East Germany took the bronze ahead of defending champion Romania.
- 1:33:51The Soviets have now won the women's crown seven of the last nine championships.
- 1:33:56The Soviets also filled the first six positions in the individual standings with Olympic champion Elena Dadevoia,
- 1:34:03heading the list with 78.25 points.
- 1:34:07Dadevoia carried half the total of points into Saturday's individual all-around finals.
- 1:34:14Latina Bunga, showing the stamina of a marathon runner,
- 1:34:18battled her way into the quarterfinals of the New South Wales Open Tennis Championship in Australia today.
- 1:34:25She won her match over Ann White in three sets.
- 1:34:30They're still in the 3-3 struggle here at Texas Stadium on this Thanksgiving afternoon.
- 1:34:34The Dallas Cowboys have the ball at their own 12-yard line.
- 1:34:37They're short of the 12, they're in their hudlin', here they come.
- 1:34:40They're on a quarterback, they can play some daddy white who's in the first half of the ballgame.
- 1:34:44Dallas fans are getting a little impakient here now, trying to rouse themselves and their football team.
- 1:34:49Raines and Dorset to the splitback. Here's a hand up to Dorset, tries the right side, comes live.
- 1:34:54If you cross the fifth here, it goes out about to the 19 right now. Faced all the way into the track.
- 1:35:00A right-wing little fairy. Little live back up, rookie from nearby Baylor at Waco, Texas.
- 1:35:06It'll be spotted at the 19-20.
- 1:35:11And what a flock, Lindsay. Herbert Scott, the seven-year man from Virginia Union, 6-2, 258.
- 1:35:17Through on big number 99, Dan Hampton, 6-5, a third-year defensive end for Arkansas.
- 1:35:22Who allowed Dorset to turn the corner and pick up almost seven yards.
- 1:35:26We have an orchard, the last putt by Rafael Septian, with his first career putt for the Cowboys.
- 1:35:32It was good for 33 yards. White is the normal putter, pushing out from the end here. Here's a quick fit.
- 1:35:37Taking live 20 Dorset and he goes to the left side.
- 1:35:40Fixed up the first and 10 for the Dallas Cowboys.
- 1:35:43With a hand-restored orchard.
- 1:35:46Fixed the move and it's just in advance of the 23-yard line.
- 1:35:50And that would have suspected also for the first Dallas first down in a long, long time.
- 1:35:57Cowboys were out first down to the first half from four to seven.
- 1:36:01Turnstile count here this afternoon, 63,499.
- 1:36:05The capacity of 65 and change.
- 1:36:07The rest are out of the parking lot, tailgating and having turkeys.
- 1:36:10You're exactly right.
- 1:36:12Three, six, 10 now for the Dallas Cowboys.
- 1:36:14Storytimes three for the swing through to the left side. George says get the ball fast to the left side.
- 1:36:20Files an opening and speeds to the 30-yard line.
- 1:36:22Or just Wilkes who brought him down.
- 1:36:24The end of seven makes a second out of three yards to go.
- 1:36:27And if he doesn't bring him down, Lindsay, he's gone.
- 1:36:29He had one man to feed and Wilkes, the basic stop right there to free was one on one.
- 1:36:34Number 20 for the Chicago Bears. Ruben Henderson, the quarterback.
- 1:36:37And Dorset easily could have gone outside and with his feet would have been gone.
- 1:36:40We have here this afternoon two men who are threatened every time they carry the football.
- 1:36:43Walter Pavement, Tony Dorset, each capable of going all the way at any given time.
- 1:36:48Second down, three yards to go. Glenn Gerrano brings the Cowboys up in the line formation initially.
- 1:36:53Now they split the back. Dorset in the left set, Prings in the right set.
- 1:36:56Gerrano hands it off to Dorset. He drives the right side and he can't go.
- 1:37:01This time he is dropped by Gary Fenton.
- 1:37:04The strong safety from Yale University got him back in the 26th yard line.
- 1:37:08It is a sixth year for Yale. Farm Coza with another 5-Eleague championship this year.
- 1:37:14Three-luck. Big, big year. Lost the four there.
- 1:37:17Third down and seventh. With Johnson comes in. They got three wide receivers in the ballgame now.
- 1:37:22Goddbell has come in and the nickel four, the Chicago Bears.
- 1:37:27Gerrano still has the Dallas Cowboys back down to Huddle. And here they come.
- 1:37:32Then there's Tom Rafferty coming over the ball. Gerrano.
- 1:37:35The only Dorset that's in the set by now. He puts you back into the shotgun flying by Prings and Dorset.
- 1:37:41Direct snap taken by Gerrano. He looks downfield and guns it. And it is incomplete.
- 1:37:47In and out of the hands of Drew Pearson.
- 1:37:51Henderson covering defensively and is forced down to putting it on for Dallas.
- 1:37:56That's the fault of the young quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys to let Gerrano.
- 1:38:00That ball was thrown out of rope, thrown right on the money.
- 1:38:03There's a case of the now monsters of the midway playing more like their namesake than turkeys.
- 1:38:08And they came in with a very hard hitting action back there by just like Gary Fentzick.
- 1:38:13And that's not, I think Pearson simply heard some footsteps. He wanted something to do with going up for that football.
- 1:38:18Thank you, all right. Rafael Sevilla on the second point of his Cowboy career.
- 1:38:21Jeff Fisher is back standing at his own 37.
- 1:38:24Got it off under every pressure there. That's the second one.
- 1:38:27And it's later in the 44 yard line.
- 1:38:33It got Bruce Aaron was right in there on him.
- 1:38:36But no call is made on the 35 yards.
- 1:38:39But it will be first in terms of 44.
- 1:38:41Sevilla learned quickly. That was his first career as part of it. He learned how to fall down.
- 1:38:47Aaron came in there and the, you know, Sevilla already had to put down and Sevilla came back.
- 1:38:56So there is no penalty. It is first in 10 and we'll be back in just a moment.
- 1:39:01Getting back to that tennis story, you talk about somebody showing a lot of power and staying power at that.
- 1:39:06Bettina Bungie showed real class today.
- 1:39:09Battle her way into the quarterfinals of the New South Wales Open Tennis Championships in Australia.
- 1:39:15Because Raine Hamper in Wednesday's program, Miss Bungie was forced to place two singles matches today.
- 1:39:22Well, she defeated Anne White, 5'7", 7'5", 7'5 in the morning.
- 1:39:27Then upset Pam Schreiber, 6'4", 4'6", 7'6", in the afternoon.
- 1:39:32In addition to that, she played another 18 games in a losing doubles match.
- 1:39:38Bungie was joined in the quarters by Chris Everdloy, 16-year-old Andrea Yeager,
- 1:39:43Martina Navratilova and Yvonne Gulagong-Caulley.
- 1:39:47Japan's top money earner shot a 500.67 today for the first round lead in the $270,000 golf tournament in southern Japan.
- 1:39:57Ayoke is the pace-setter. Lee Trevino won stroke off the pace. He's furthest three strokes back.
- 1:40:04The Chicago Bears came in with a record of three and nine victories over Tampa Bay, 28-17,
- 1:40:10over the Chargers and over time 20-17 and over the Kansas City Chasen, over time 16-13.
- 1:40:17There were only three of Chicago's, the only three Chicago victories all year.
- 1:40:22Now, Chicago first-scan tears their own 44-7's and has them up there in a right formation.
- 1:40:27Here's a quick-pitch wall to pace at the right side. Looking for a climb.
- 1:40:30It's a nice throw by Haasback Pass, downfield.
- 1:40:33And it's got to be way short of his incentive to save his seeding down the right side.
- 1:40:36And then, uh, get Marjoram. And Everton Walls with the start of Marjoram is way short.
- 1:40:41The Haasback Pass, by Walden Paton.
- 1:40:44And again, Marjoram. Let's check the passing to this big of a hill.
- 1:40:48Paton on the year. Paton and Parsons are one out of one.
- 1:40:53So, Paton's passing that to the big drop. Just stays up.
- 1:40:58It is second down in ten yards to go now. It's two-tied, three-three.
- 1:41:04And a battle between the defenses of the Dallas Calvars and the Chicago Bears.
- 1:41:08Look, Williams is in there now. Tied in for the Chicago Bears.
- 1:41:13And Evans has the ball.
- 1:41:15And he hits from behind.
- 1:41:17And the ball is sent by Jones.
- 1:41:19He was hit by Marjoram and Jones, they covered.
- 1:41:22They finished the 35-yard line.
- 1:41:25Marjoram made a hit. The ball hit the air.
- 1:41:28And the ball was sent by Jones. And Jones is down.
- 1:41:34And again, that was one of the matchups to what?
- 1:41:38Jones, Harvey Martin against their offensive counter.
- 1:41:42That's on. Harvey Martin forced the turnover.
- 1:41:46Jones was there for the interception.
- 1:41:48And it's a big break for the Dallas Calvars.
- 1:41:50They are just outside the 35-yard line of the Chicago Bears.
- 1:41:53Again, Danny White starting quarterback out to the bruised test wall.
- 1:41:57They covered the first of all of it twice.
- 1:41:59They've taken away three times.
- 1:42:01And Gerardo has them up their nose.
- 1:42:03He does have his landing back.
- 1:42:05James Jones is in there and plays up.
- 1:42:07And he has a quick quick Gerardo's frame.
- 1:42:09He passes the left pass.
- 1:42:11And the left pass has a pass.
- 1:42:13Now the 20-yard is in the air.
- 1:42:15In the end zone, the left pass is on.
- 1:42:17And it is intercepted.
- 1:42:19And backpacks are coming back.
- 1:42:21There was a wrestling match for the football.
- 1:42:23Kato got his Henderson. And Tommy Hill were wrestling.
- 1:42:27But Henderson came down with it.
- 1:42:29He was even touched down.
- 1:42:31He touched back.
- 1:42:33Kato got his three-three.
- 1:42:35Kato gets to borrow the 20-yard line.
- 1:42:37Simply a fly-matter kill.
- 1:42:39Briggs would have been better.
- 1:42:41Never to throw the football.
- 1:42:43Henderson was perfect for it.
- 1:42:45It was like a volleyball game.
- 1:42:47The ball went in at once by Henderson.
- 1:42:49One by Hill.
- 1:42:51And it's a swift ball three.
- 1:42:53Turn over against Dallas.
- 1:42:55They're all even to turn over to the Department of the Greats.
- 1:42:57Greats, but that's a gait.
- 1:42:59When Harvey Borkin's two-ball goes into the third,
- 1:43:01first defense Chicago at the row 20-yard line.
- 1:43:03623 left to go in quarter number three.
- 1:43:05Three through wild.
- 1:43:07Dallas is a great Chicago three.
- 1:43:09Well, can Mike Borkin be walked here?
- 1:43:11Upset the swift ball carry
- 1:43:13and passing on offense and a gang tackling defense.
- 1:43:15Well, that's what Auburn is going to find out this Saturday.
- 1:43:17When his face is powerful,
- 1:43:19Alabama in Birmingham.
- 1:43:21Auburn is an 11-point underdog,
- 1:43:23but has been trying to cite Bama all this week.
- 1:43:25Taking note of the fact that Coach Paul Bear Bryant
- 1:43:27of Alabama is after his
- 1:43:29315th career victory,
- 1:43:31which would be an all-time record.
- 1:43:33Auburn has sent out a lot of press releases this week
- 1:43:35saying, this is Bryant's first chance
- 1:43:37at breaking the record.
- 1:43:39Well, there has been an ominous silence
- 1:43:41from the Alabama campus about that record.
- 1:43:43Well, that ought to be quite a shootout on Saturday.
- 1:43:45We'll see you next week.
- 1:43:47Well, that ought to be quite a shootout on Saturday
- 1:43:49down at Legion Field in Birmingham.
- 1:43:51And it's the first part of a college doubleheader
- 1:43:53on AFRTS, Penn State, and Pittsburgh
- 1:43:55in the first game.
- 1:43:57And then we'll have Alabama at Auburn,
- 1:43:59which is the host team this year at Birmingham
- 1:44:01in that southeast conference showdown.
- 1:44:03Alabama, of course, already
- 1:44:05securing a spot in the Cotton Bowl
- 1:44:07opposite Texas on New Year's Day.
- 1:44:09Auburn always potentially
- 1:44:11an upset team.
- 1:44:13We could be here a while.
- 1:44:15Three off.
- 1:44:17It's 4 out of 15.
- 1:44:19536 yards.
- 1:44:21200 seconds brings the Bears up.
- 1:44:23First and 10 at the 20-yard line
- 1:44:25for Evans and the Chicago Bears
- 1:44:27who's running back to the 9th formation.
- 1:44:29Evans to the quick space.
- 1:44:31Walled in place, and back to left side.
- 1:44:333-nest across to 20.
- 1:44:3525 and out of bounds.
- 1:44:37Pendley-Marquers is thrown.
- 1:44:39Pendley-Marquers is thrown.
- 1:44:41He's building in a moment.
- 1:44:43As Pendley is reported to him just now,
- 1:44:45Michael Downs is the man
- 1:44:47who ran the pace and out of bounds.
- 1:44:49Space mask.
- 1:44:51That's what I suspected.
- 1:44:53It'll be packed onto the end of the run
- 1:44:55which was for 5 yards, not 25.
- 1:44:59And this is a 5-yard space mask
- 1:45:01and Chuck Heverling, the referee,
- 1:45:03will tell us about it.
- 1:45:05On attack, we'll face mask
- 1:45:075 yards, number 20-60
- 1:45:09in defense, first time.
- 1:45:11That's Michael Downs.
- 1:45:13Rookie out of right.
- 1:45:15He's presented the first pass
- 1:45:17but the time this football game is over,
- 1:45:19the rookie, number 26 out of right,
- 1:45:21will get to know Walter Payton very well
- 1:45:23and that's why he got to know him better than he wanted to
- 1:45:25because he had to grab the base mask
- 1:45:27long before he threw Payton out of bounds.
- 1:45:29First and 10 bears at their own 30-yard line.
- 1:45:31Evans again up there.
- 1:45:33Takes his nests, handing it off.
- 1:45:35Second by Matt Sturley,
- 1:45:37we pass 5 seconds for station identification.
- 1:45:39This is the CBS Radio Network.
- 1:45:43This is the American Forces Radio
- 1:45:45and television service.
- 1:45:51This is Lindsay Nelson with Jim Kelly
- 1:45:53at Texas Stadium in case you're keeping
- 1:45:55a statistical summary of this ball game.
- 1:45:57The plan with the edge, Jones got the ball
- 1:45:59set, popped up into the air after Harvey Martin
- 1:46:01and made the tackle was officially ruled
- 1:46:03a proper recovery.
- 1:46:05Second by 7 yards to go for the Chicago Bear.
- 1:46:09Running back to an I-4, make sure once again.
- 1:46:11Here's a quick fix.
- 1:46:13It's Payton trying to left side, gets to the 35-yard line.
- 1:46:15This down is Randy White there
- 1:46:17for the tackle after again and two,
- 1:46:19third and five for Chicago.
- 1:46:21Amanda May, that's play number 32
- 1:46:23for the Dallas Cowboys turning it inside.
- 1:46:25Dennis Thurman, the four-year man from USC.
- 1:46:27He went one-on-one with Matt Sturley
- 1:46:29and he held his position
- 1:46:31and that four-stage to turn it inside.
- 1:46:33That's where the waiting arms are number 54.
- 1:46:35Randy White works it out.
- 1:46:37It's the third down play call.
- 1:46:39Kevin's four out of 15, remember,
- 1:46:41and Patrick looked at third and long.
- 1:46:43Rick Williams is coming there
- 1:46:45offensively now for Chicago.
- 1:46:47Dallas is into the middle.
- 1:46:49Jones sets back his 10-7s away from the tap.
- 1:46:51Drop back, take a look.
- 1:46:55And so is that his victory.
- 1:46:57This eight, as it just across the 40-yard line
- 1:46:59he was hit high by Dickerson.
- 1:47:01Take a long look at the six
- 1:47:03to see if that's possible first down.
- 1:47:05The most of the spot is across the 40.
- 1:47:07It is very, very close.
- 1:47:09They're taking a long look
- 1:47:11and perhaps they'll have to bring out the six.
- 1:47:13That's exactly what they're going to do.
- 1:47:15They're going to make it for the possible first down.
- 1:47:17If he didn't get it,
- 1:47:19it's less than the length of the football.
- 1:47:21Right.
- 1:47:25And it is going to be a first in 10.
- 1:47:27And there it is.
- 1:47:29Cowboy is before Danny White has bruised ribs.
- 1:47:31Next race, no evidence of fractures.
- 1:47:35Danny White is in the millionth close now
- 1:47:37over on the sideline.
- 1:47:39He was not even out there
- 1:47:41at the start of the second half.
- 1:47:43So they have tamed him up.
- 1:47:45Maybe put a nice pack on the ribs.
- 1:47:47He is out there now.
- 1:47:49And we'll not return.
- 1:47:51There keeps a drive on our first down across the 40-yard line
- 1:47:53running back to the nine-four.
- 1:47:55Makes him prevent sevens.
- 1:47:57Now, play action and
- 1:47:59incomplete.
- 1:48:01He's a beautiful Brian Brashnegel.
- 1:48:03He was running a flat batter to
- 1:48:05the middle at
- 1:48:07Everton Walls.
- 1:48:09The command was only collided and wasn't ever a collegiate.
- 1:48:11Everton Walls, the rookie out of
- 1:48:13Grandling who leads the NFL
- 1:48:15in an interception with 10,
- 1:48:17really put a hit on Brian Brashnegel.
- 1:48:19Most battered down about 10 yards,
- 1:48:21cutting in, sliding over across the middle.
- 1:48:23The ball was thrown right on the money on a string
- 1:48:25by Vint Sevin.
- 1:48:27No one has ever questioned his arm.
- 1:48:29It's been his direction where he has thrown the ball.
- 1:48:31He's now four out of 16
- 1:48:33doing his second.
- 1:48:35Brashnegel with a wide receiver,
- 1:48:37turning back to a slip for Vint Sevin.
- 1:48:39And he got off the wall to
- 1:48:41make me pass the right side.
- 1:48:43Sturdy stuff and gets up to the 50-yard line.
- 1:48:45A little bit short of the first I think.
- 1:48:47He tried to sort of aid you out there
- 1:48:49for it. It's going to be spotted again just across.
- 1:48:51It was watered
- 1:48:53and down on the tackle.
- 1:48:55And we're going to have here now
- 1:48:57a third downer I think it used to go.
- 1:48:59And again, Walter Payton turned to play.
- 1:49:01That could have been stopped back at the line
- 1:49:03of scrimmage into a huge gain.
- 1:49:05They bring the six up. Walter Payton on the
- 1:49:07afternoons, 24 carries,
- 1:49:09136 yards.
- 1:49:11They measure now as they extend the chain
- 1:49:13to see if he fixed it up. It is very close.
- 1:49:15Inches away.
- 1:49:17It'll be third down and inches to go.
- 1:49:19Double tight on the line of Robin Erlen-Mike Gopp.
- 1:49:21Today is in there for Chicago.
- 1:49:23Payton keeps his face up.
- 1:49:25He goes over 1,000 yards for the season this afternoon.
- 1:49:27He came in with 841 yards.
- 1:49:29So he needs just the 159.
- 1:49:31And he's got 136 of that.
- 1:49:33So
- 1:49:35one would certainly suspect
- 1:49:37to go over 1,000 yards again.
- 1:49:39Exactly. And it's been a great afternoon
- 1:49:41for Walter Payton here this afternoon.
- 1:49:43He came in having had only
- 1:49:45three games this year.
- 1:49:47In which he had gone over 100 yards.
- 1:49:49The clock is running
- 1:49:51with 4 minutes and 4 seconds.
- 1:49:53He's in the third quarter. Chicago's trying to pick up the first down
- 1:49:55on a third and inches.
- 1:49:57They're in the tight wing right.
- 1:49:59The wing back at motion
- 1:50:01across to the left side.
- 1:50:03And that's the way he's got the first down.
- 1:50:05Almost focused.
- 1:50:07He was pulled out by 50 Charlie Waters
- 1:50:09at the 35 yard line.
- 1:50:11The defense was pulled in there tight.
- 1:50:13He's got a stop to third and inches.
- 1:50:15That's the way he's almost focused.
- 1:50:17And that's the way he's got the play call
- 1:50:19about the Chicago coaching staff.
- 1:50:21Obviously everybody is
- 1:50:23keying on number 34 Walter Payton.
- 1:50:25Suey has been used as the decoy.
- 1:50:27The first man through that time
- 1:50:29evidence just slipped him the ball
- 1:50:31and he slipped the right by
- 1:50:33all of the Dallas defenders.
- 1:50:35He was into the open field before
- 1:50:37Charlie Waters came and made a touchdown
- 1:50:39saving time.
- 1:50:413-10 Chicago at the Dallas 35
- 1:50:43score tie 3-3 in the third quarter.
- 1:50:45And that's the way he's got the ball.
- 1:50:47He's got the 32 yard line again
- 1:50:49of three. Remember how this drive
- 1:50:51started the last time the Bears had
- 1:50:53the football army marks and forced
- 1:50:55Vince Evans into a mistake.
- 1:50:57The ball batted loose.
- 1:50:59He saw Jones picked it up turn over
- 1:51:01against the Bears. Dallas started
- 1:51:03the Chicago 35. Then on the next play
- 1:51:05Ron Spring threw an Aaron half back
- 1:51:07option pass that Tony Hill batted
- 1:51:09around for a while and finally
- 1:51:11Ruben Anderson came down with it on
- 1:51:13the left side.
- 1:51:15Second down seven yards to go ball
- 1:51:17outside the 31 yard line.
- 1:51:19And it's the Suey driving the left
- 1:51:21side.
- 1:51:23He gets down to the
- 1:51:2525.
- 1:51:27Just short of the 25 and just short of
- 1:51:29the first down.
- 1:51:31It'll be third down a yard to go.
- 1:51:33That's the 34.
- 1:51:35That's the 26.
- 1:51:37There's obviously a key call now for
- 1:51:39the Chicago coaches. They want to pick
- 1:51:41up the ball outside the 25
- 1:51:43and keep this drive alive.
- 1:51:45They would like this touchdown. They
- 1:51:47really don't want to settle for the
- 1:51:49field goal though. And I'm sure they
- 1:51:51would be happy to put three points
- 1:51:53up on the board. And it's going to be
- 1:51:55a cause for concern for Tom
- 1:51:57Landry and the Cowboys too because
- 1:51:59you've got Danny White out for the
- 1:52:01rest of the game. You've got your
- 1:52:03backup quarter back in and Dallas
- 1:52:05on offense has generated no scoring
- 1:52:07threat since that field goal early
- 1:52:09in the game.
- 1:52:11That's going to be free down 10 yards
- 1:52:13to go for the Chicago Bears. It's a
- 1:52:15now it's 24 yards live.
- 1:52:17And again so important they keep that
- 1:52:19Chicago drive alive. There's
- 1:52:21a lot of the touchdown up on the
- 1:52:23board. And one would have to suspect
- 1:52:25back in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania,
- 1:52:27the Eagles listening and watching would
- 1:52:29like to see a Chicago touchdown too
- 1:52:31because the Cowboys, Eagles, 9 and 3
- 1:52:33tied for first in the NFC
- 1:52:35Central.
- 1:52:37And then all the way across by
- 1:52:39Mark Knickle.
- 1:52:41He takes the ball as far as right
- 1:52:43tackle.
- 1:52:45He gets him out of the yard and that is
- 1:52:47all as Bob Rooney catches out over
- 1:52:49there.
- 1:52:51That's my personal answer.
- 1:52:53I'm going to again a 2, make a second
- 1:52:55out on 8 yards to go. We have now
- 1:52:57exactly one minute to be played in
- 1:52:59the third quarter.
- 1:53:01And at this point the Cowboys was
- 1:53:036 first down. The Bears was 10.
- 1:53:05Chicago 184.
- 1:53:07Mostly obviously Walter Payton.
- 1:53:09Cowboys 105. Chicago
- 1:53:1123. The Bears
- 1:53:13about gained $207.
- 1:53:15For 162.
- 1:53:17Chicago up there in an high formation.
- 1:53:19Quick pitch to Walter Payton.
- 1:53:21And he starts the right side.
- 1:53:23Offs his off. Gets inside the 50.
- 1:53:25And Walter Payton is out about
- 1:53:270 to 14 yard line.
- 1:53:29He goes out and forces him out of
- 1:53:31outside. Where exactly will they
- 1:53:33go?
- 1:53:35I think it's going to be a tad short.
- 1:53:37About a foot and a half
- 1:53:39that's one of the Bears injured on the play.
- 1:53:41That's number 87 Mike Cobb.
- 1:53:43That's right in Michigan State. Payton
- 1:53:45at that time. He simply ran away from Mike
- 1:53:47Hakeman 58. He blew his 50 back
- 1:53:49at the 20 yard line. They had him
- 1:53:51sustained before he gave him a hip and took
- 1:53:53it away and he was off. They're going to take
- 1:53:55the chain all the way across and measure
- 1:53:57before they spot the ball. They've got a
- 1:53:59long the sideline on the far side.
- 1:54:01If it's not a first down I don't think it is.
- 1:54:03It's possible at the inbound market.
- 1:54:05Extend the chain.
- 1:54:07It's a little short.
- 1:54:09So now they'll use that chain
- 1:54:11to spot the ball at the inbound
- 1:54:13market. Looks to be about the length of the
- 1:54:15football.
- 1:54:17That will be a third down coming
- 1:54:19for Chicago. And it's
- 1:54:21at the 14 yard line.
- 1:54:25All that's
- 1:54:27properly spotted inbound marker on the right
- 1:54:29side.
- 1:54:3131 seconds.
- 1:54:33Remaining to be played in the third quarter
- 1:54:35with the score tied 3-3.
- 1:54:37Chicago drive it.
- 1:54:39Now he's started off the touchback
- 1:54:41at the 20 yard line.
- 1:54:47That's the way
- 1:54:49the right side is going to the left side.
- 1:54:51They're going to wing out overall.
- 1:54:53Mike Hakeman wing back in motion across.
- 1:54:55The way he's got the first to pin
- 1:54:57the ball in front of the 10 yard line.
- 1:54:59He's down to the 12 yard line.
- 1:55:01Mike Hakeman,
- 1:55:02to make the tackle first and go to Chicago.
- 1:55:04And the down is still in the
- 1:55:05line.
- 1:55:07What's an impressive drive by the
- 1:55:09Chicago Bears. It began after the turn
- 1:55:11over all the way back down at their own
- 1:55:1320 yard line. They have done it
- 1:55:15almost entirely on the ground
- 1:55:17with the very key calls on third down.
- 1:55:19Walter Payton down 28 carries.
- 1:55:21154 yards.
- 1:55:23And the next time Payton carries the ball
- 1:55:25the most carries against the Dallas Cowboys ever.
- 1:55:27There's the gun. That's the end of the third quarter.
- 1:55:29What's the score?
- 1:55:31The Cowboys 3-3.
- 1:55:33Well, in case you missed the
- 1:55:35score earlier, Detroit
- 1:55:37was in front at half time
- 1:55:3917-7 and
- 1:55:41beat the Kansas City Chiefs
- 1:55:43in impressive style to run their record
- 1:55:45to a perfect 6-0 at the Silver
- 1:55:47Dome in Pontiac, Michigan earlier this Thanksgiving
- 1:55:49day. The final score was
- 1:55:51Detroit 27, Kansas City 10.
- 1:55:53In college football,
- 1:55:55Texas was leading Texas A&M
- 1:55:57late in the ballgame, 21-13
- 1:55:59an earlier game on a very light
- 1:56:01college card this Thanksgiving day.
- 1:56:03Richmond, B. Pennsylvania
- 1:56:05by a score of 18-12.
- 1:56:09Wayne Gretzky of the Edmonton
- 1:56:11Oilers appears to be well on his way to
- 1:56:13breaking his own single season scoring record
- 1:56:15of 164 points set last season
- 1:56:17in the National Hockey League.
- 1:56:19Gretzky scored four more goals
- 1:56:21and assisted on one more Wednesday night
- 1:56:23to lead the Oilers to an 11-4
- 1:56:25Roppelgast, Los Angeles.
- 1:56:27In just 24 games, the 21-year-old
- 1:56:29Phenom has now popped in
- 1:56:3128 goals and 25 assists.
- 1:56:33At this time of season
- 1:56:35ago, he had just 12 goals
- 1:56:37and still came on to win
- 1:56:39the scoring title. So he's
- 1:56:41well ahead of his record-setting pace
- 1:56:43of a year ago.
- 1:56:45The NHL Washington
- 1:56:47Capitals are on a chair after Wednesday
- 1:56:49night's 4-4 tie with Minnesota.
- 1:56:51These other dwelling caps are now
- 1:56:53unbeaten in their last six games
- 1:56:55after losing 13 straight.
- 1:56:57The hero Wednesday night, Darren Beach
- 1:56:59says the new coach, Brian Murray,
- 1:57:01is responsible for the team's
- 1:57:03turnaround with a lot of confidence.
- 1:57:05One quarter to go.
- 1:57:07To go, score a tie at 3-3 here at
- 1:57:09Texas City. That's in regulation.
- 1:57:11We can go into overtime the way this
- 1:57:13one's going on. We've had no talent
- 1:57:15scoring at all. It's 4-04 left
- 1:57:17quarter, except the end of 41-yard
- 1:57:19field goal, but the Cowboys out in
- 1:57:21front are 3-0. 13-0, 5-0 in the
- 1:57:23first half of 44-yard field goal
- 1:57:25by John Romero. And that's where
- 1:57:27we are right now.
- 1:57:2940 minutes to football later.
- 1:57:31All the spotters are from 7-yard
- 1:57:33line. It is free-stown and gold
- 1:57:35to go as we start the fourth quarter.
- 1:57:37Lindsay Nelson and Jim Kelly here at
- 1:57:39Texas City.
- 1:57:41The guy's over there, Drake's a
- 1:57:43Huffelner running back.
- 1:57:45That's Evan, he's a quarter back.
- 1:57:47Right-hand go on motion for
- 1:57:49right-hand all the way across.
- 1:57:51Evan should be able to meet that
- 1:57:53right side. One-yard is
- 1:57:55back to the 6-yard line.
- 1:57:57Ah, Bruni. They have the defensive
- 1:57:59charge to the Dallas Cowboys second
- 1:58:01and goal outside the 5.
- 1:58:03Chicago testing the character of the
- 1:58:05Cowboys defense right now on
- 1:58:07first and goal from inside the
- 1:58:0910-yard line. Cowboys defense knows
- 1:58:11the offense is in trouble all
- 1:58:13the time.
- 1:58:15You don't want to fall behind and buy
- 1:58:17a touchdown. You're at the fourth quarter
- 1:58:19and you have to go back two years ago
- 1:58:21Thanksgiving to find the last time
- 1:58:23the Dallas Cowboys team has lost
- 1:58:25to Texas City. That was to Houston 30-24.
- 1:58:27I carbon it tied in, Robin
- 1:58:29early's out.
- 1:58:31Ocean's left side all the way across
- 1:58:33by Barcagel.
- 1:58:35He's the guy on the left side. He wants
- 1:58:37to hit for the corner. That's back
- 1:58:395 and gets to the 1-yard line.
- 1:58:41He's got a run for the flight.
- 1:58:43Cut back, got to the 1-yard line.
- 1:58:45And it was Bob Bruni again.
- 1:58:47He set him off at the pass along with
- 1:58:49Charlie Waters.
- 1:58:51He's got a run for the 1-yard line.
- 1:58:53It was Bruni that time by Charlie
- 1:58:55Waters, number 41.
- 1:58:57I thought tomorrow Vantage for
- 1:58:59Leslie when Nate made his cut at the
- 1:59:0110-yard line and turned on the after
- 1:59:03corner and he was gone. He made his cut
- 1:59:05back, Bruni shut it down. Waters came
- 1:59:07up for the second hit and now another
- 1:59:09one.
- 1:59:11They're calling a timeout, Chicago Bear.
- 1:59:13Robin early just come back
- 1:59:15to the ball again but
- 1:59:17down there on the 1-yard line
- 1:59:19the Chicago Bear is one of the discusses.
- 1:59:21So with a score tied down
- 1:59:23at 3, Chicago 3, let's take timeout.
- 1:59:25Well you know fans
- 1:59:27coming all sizes and shapes not to
- 1:59:29mention occupations. Among those
- 1:59:31cheering on England's soccer team and it's
- 1:59:33pushed toward next year's World Cup or the
- 1:59:35following, an undertaker, a land
- 1:59:37speculator, a pub owner, a travel
- 1:59:39agent and insurance agent and a moving
- 1:59:41van owner. What makes them news
- 1:59:43is that they all played for the English team
- 1:59:45which won the World Soccer Cup in
- 1:59:471966. That was the last time Great Britain
- 1:59:49won it. The undertaker is Ray
- 1:59:51Wilson who was the left fullback
- 1:59:53for that team. The last speculator
- 1:59:55is George Cohen, a defensive
- 1:59:57star. The pub owner is Bobby Moore
- 1:59:59who's captain of the team.
- 2:00:01The travel agent is Bobby Charlton
- 2:00:03who played a superb defensive game for
- 2:00:05England back in 66. And the
- 2:00:07moving van owner is Roger Hunt
- 2:00:09who is a great passer in his day.
- 2:00:11The insurance agent is Jeffrey
- 2:00:13Hurst who scored three goals
- 2:00:15in the final game that
- 2:00:17gave Britain its last World
- 2:00:19Cup soccer title back in
- 2:00:211966. In my how the years
- 2:00:23have gone by.
- 2:00:27Ben Stevens of the Chicago Bears has been over
- 2:00:29for a strategy coverage and now he's returned to the
- 2:00:31Hubble. Dallas Cowboys
- 2:00:33defensive unit some of them have been
- 2:00:35on the sidelines for conference there.
- 2:00:37It will be screwed down
- 2:00:39Golden O4 Chicago outside the Dallas
- 2:00:411 yard line. 13 minutes
- 2:00:4343 seconds left to play in this
- 2:00:45holiday football game in the story
- 2:00:47ties. Dallas 3, Chicago 3
- 2:00:49Chuck Eveling the referee marks them already
- 2:00:51for play in the third to count.
- 2:00:53Chicago still in the hundred.
- 2:00:55Dallas fans, signing, Corsair defensive
- 2:00:57unit. Here comes the Chicago Bears.
- 2:00:59That's who is in the left set.
- 2:01:01Walter Paterson in the right set.
- 2:01:03Ben Stevens is a quarterback.
- 2:01:05Evan
- 2:01:07gets the handoff. Matt Spetzow
- 2:01:09to the right side. He's going to take it in
- 2:01:11touchdown. Ben Stevens
- 2:01:13that's acceptable.
- 2:01:15Ben Stevens to the right side.
- 2:01:17He's in for the touchdown.
- 2:01:19No handoff at all.
- 2:01:21Ben Stevens
- 2:01:23took the shot.
- 2:01:25Ben Stevens to the right side.
- 2:01:27He's got him easily.
- 2:01:29He's a great call by the Chicago coaches
- 2:01:31in the two next to us. Direction
- 2:01:33everybody going to the left side except
- 2:01:35Ben Stevens. Matt Sui through the key block
- 2:01:37on Charlie Waters and Evan just
- 2:01:39scampered in. Nobody touched him.
- 2:01:41Bears go out in front. 5-6 points.
- 2:01:43John Roberto in the
- 2:01:45Depple Conversion. He's 10-3-10 in the extra points
- 2:01:47department. Alavine will hold for it.
- 2:01:51Alavine is waiting for the snap.
- 2:01:55Put it down.
- 2:01:57It's a good time.
- 2:01:59It's a good time.
- 2:02:03He's slow down.
- 2:02:05He has two sharp goals.
- 2:02:07He has two sharp goals.
- 2:02:09He's lost the conversion.
- 2:02:11He's sent by Roberto.
- 2:02:13So the Bears do not get the extra points.
- 2:02:15They get just the
- 2:02:17six goals.
- 2:02:19He's way up into the air.
- 2:02:21John Dutton was gone by side with him.
- 2:02:23That's how the conversion
- 2:02:25The Bears are leading by a score of 9-3.
- 2:02:28Jaco Bears are over in a huddle now for Bad Georgia.
- 2:02:32Aligning himself to kick off.
- 2:02:33All right, it's Alice Cowboys have deployed.
- 2:02:35Jones's deep fellows is on one side and Newsom is on the other.
- 2:02:39Red has received the kickoff.
- 2:02:40We're in the fourth quarter.
- 2:02:42That have been a very important block of a conversion
- 2:02:45of Jeff that just took place.
- 2:02:47And there's two goals Jones is having perhaps the best year of his career.
- 2:02:51It was an 80 yard drive, 15 plays, it took 9 minutes, 58 seconds.
- 2:02:56Evans took it in and the one after touchdown, no good.
- 2:03:01Now that huddle for the man is as close to the 30 yard line.
- 2:03:04It's obviously important that this sector points to Cowboys
- 2:03:07to win with a touchdown and a conversion by a 70-N.
- 2:03:10Or if it's been the case that Cowboys are unable to punch in,
- 2:03:13two 70-N field goals could put us in an over-conviction situation.
- 2:03:17So we're in one of those things as Roberto has seated up on the 35 yard line
- 2:03:21and Jones waits for the deep to one yard line.
- 2:03:25We're waiting for Heavenly Clifton, there it is.
- 2:03:29Here comes Roberto.
- 2:03:31There's a knuckleball down field.
- 2:03:33Jones watches the hop and it goes into the end zone,
- 2:03:37Newsom lets it roll and it's going to go across the sideline.
- 2:03:40How do I get a touch back?
- 2:03:41It'll be put in play first in 10, 20 yard line.
- 2:03:47Now if you're the Dallas Cowboys,
- 2:03:49you don't have your number one quarterback in there.
- 2:03:52When Corano is in a five-year van out of Cermont-Alan-Stake,
- 2:03:55it's been a rough afternoon.
- 2:03:56But to be fair, the Umpers thrown the ball extremely well
- 2:03:59and she's finished the series that have been dropping into the bears
- 2:04:01that have been batting it away.
- 2:04:0313-31 to go.
- 2:04:05First in 10 now, Dallas into 20 yard line.
- 2:04:08Dallas fans again.
- 2:04:10It's a good start of the year, hopefully.
- 2:04:12Corano brings him up.
- 2:04:15Even up the running back.
- 2:04:19And Corano gets the snap.
- 2:04:22Makes it.
- 2:04:23Goes on the run.
- 2:04:2425-31, makes it 35-41, brings it across the 45 yard line.
- 2:04:29Finally pulled out by Otis Wilson and Terry Stett.
- 2:04:32Play action, and good play action by Corano.
- 2:04:35And then he threw the pass out to the right,
- 2:04:37and it's passed to Spring. It is up there at the 47 yard line.
- 2:04:41However, there's a penalty mark there,
- 2:04:43a penalty against the Dallas Cowboys
- 2:04:45that will qualify the big, big gainer
- 2:04:47that would have put them all at the 47.
- 2:04:49Everling says, swing it back.
- 2:04:51Bring it all back.
- 2:04:53The Lions put through the flag before the snap,
- 2:04:56or right at the snap, back in the 20 yard line.
- 2:04:59Offsides against the Cowboys, and again that huge gain.
- 2:05:01Here's Chuck Eveling, the referee.
- 2:05:05Offsides, off in number eight, first time.
- 2:05:09That's Tony Hill, one of the wide receivers.
- 2:05:11He jumped a little bit too soon.
- 2:05:13It was his job on the play simply to go down
- 2:05:15and clear out the zone.
- 2:05:17Had a very perturbed and confused Tom Lantry
- 2:05:20over the Cowboys sideline right now,
- 2:05:22and just separated himself from his footboard.
- 2:05:25Three-cent, 15 at the 15, running back to Riva,
- 2:05:28and that's for Corano.
- 2:05:30And Sammy hands it off.
- 2:05:32And then taken by Dorey Stett, he ties it on his side.
- 2:05:34Tony Dorey Stett moves it off to the 20 yard line for five.
- 2:05:37Before single, Harry brings him down.
- 2:05:40Second down and ten yards to go.
- 2:05:43Tony Dorey Stett now, 16 carries, 55 yards.
- 2:05:46Contrast that with Robert Payton,
- 2:05:48who's up with a total of 159 yards on 30 carries.
- 2:05:53Dorey Stett gained 1,000 yards his first year in the NFL,
- 2:05:5613-25s, 1107 his third, his fourth year,
- 2:06:001185 yards, his fifth year shortly in progress.
- 2:06:04Tony Dorey Stett has gone ahead as George Rogers
- 2:06:07has a leading right here now.
- 2:06:09Second down, ten yards to go.
- 2:06:12Driving back at Corano.
- 2:06:15Lots of time, a long pass to Hill, the 20-year series.
- 2:06:19And the tackle, that's a 25-yard line by Doug Clay.
- 2:06:24A good shot, baby, tackle by Doug Clay.
- 2:06:27Tony Hill, wasted ten dollars as the Chicago 25,
- 2:06:3255-yard pickup.
- 2:06:35And if anybody doubted that this five-year man
- 2:06:37is the monologue's biggest head in arms,
- 2:06:39consider the fact that that ball travels
- 2:06:4255-oh yards in the air.
- 2:06:44That was a great throw by Corano right on the money.
- 2:06:47Hill was a good concentration,
- 2:06:49looked it right in, and flanked him up
- 2:06:51and tackled him around the ankles.
- 2:06:53Otherwise, we had a five-football game.
- 2:06:55That's what he said to him, the 117 yards.
- 2:06:58Over to Alasdair Boy,
- 2:06:59three-ster, and then to Chicago 25.
- 2:07:01On to the right side.
- 2:07:03Tony Dorey Stett's a left-foot for Ben Corano.
- 2:07:05Corano's got them all.
- 2:07:06Dustback, looked downfield.
- 2:07:08And now in traffic, he went down to the right side.
- 2:07:11He gets to the 20 and hits the deck.
- 2:07:13Corano and a lot of traffic,
- 2:07:15spin outbound, open territory,
- 2:07:17and gets to the 20-yard line where he hits the deck.
- 2:07:20And the Chicago man is down.
- 2:07:23An injury timeout for Chicago.
- 2:07:26More attention to an injury.
- 2:07:28And it is Ruben Henderson who is down.
- 2:07:33Corano now, four out of 11 at the fasting department.
- 2:07:36One interception, but let's just get a question for you.
- 2:07:39Danny White is out of the football game
- 2:07:41and will not return.
- 2:07:42If you're Tom Landry,
- 2:07:43and the Dallas coaches,
- 2:07:44what are you thinking about when you see
- 2:07:46your back up quarterbacks
- 2:07:47scrambling out of the pocket right there
- 2:07:49because if Corano goes down,
- 2:07:51it's Brew Thurston, a wide receiver
- 2:07:52who comes into play quarterbacks.
- 2:07:5411-28 left to go in the fourth quarter.
- 2:07:57And the Chicago Bears,
- 2:07:59clinging to a six-point lead.
- 2:08:019-3, we'll be back in a moment.
- 2:08:04Well, the final score is in
- 2:08:06from College Station Texas quarterback Robert Brewer.
- 2:08:09Scored one CD and passed for another.
- 2:08:11Thanksgiving Day to carry number 6, Texas
- 2:08:13to a 21-13 win over Texas A&M
- 2:08:16in the regular season finale for both schools.
- 2:08:19The long-awarned who will host Alabama
- 2:08:21in the Cotton Bowl on New Year's Day
- 2:08:23finished the year at 9-1-1 their loan loss.
- 2:08:26That lost side to defeat at the hands of Arkansas.
- 2:08:29The Aggies finished at 6-5
- 2:08:31in their schedules to face Oklahoma State
- 2:08:33in the Independence Bowl on December 12th.
- 2:08:36Texas blew apart the game for all its points
- 2:08:39in the second quarter after spotting the Aggies
- 2:08:41two David Hardy field goals
- 2:08:4335-27 yards early in the first quarter.
- 2:08:46Brewer marched Texas 80 yards on 12 plays
- 2:08:49and kept the drive with a one-yard plunge.
- 2:08:51Seven minutes later, Johnny Walker
- 2:08:53who rushed for 178 yards on the afternoon
- 2:08:56ran 60 yards for a score.
- 2:08:58The third CD came on a 38-yard pass from Brewer
- 2:09:01to Hercke Walls to wrap it up.
- 2:09:07The injured Chicago man with Al Harris
- 2:09:09gets him out of the ball game second and five for Dallas.
- 2:09:11Here's a hand-off.
- 2:09:13He's taken by George Sanding,
- 2:09:15into the 10-yard line, pushed down
- 2:09:17and goal to go inside the 10, Gary Simpkins
- 2:09:20and Doug Black made the hit.
- 2:09:22First and goal, it's spotted at the 9-yard line.
- 2:09:25Dallas has the Chicago man, Tony Doris,
- 2:09:28that's leading through.
- 2:09:30Who appears to get back into the ball game.
- 2:09:32Here comes Judge Harvey back into the ball game.
- 2:09:34The Cowboys are driving.
- 2:09:36That's where the first time is a football game.
- 2:09:38The left side of the Cowboy off-census line,
- 2:09:41Revers got bats out of it, opening up some holes.
- 2:09:43It's been all on the right side
- 2:09:45when the Cowboys didn't regain anything on the ground.
- 2:09:47Dallas in the now formation for quarterback Glenn Gerardo.
- 2:09:50Here goes George Sutter to a left cut now.
- 2:09:52He evened up a run free.
- 2:09:54And on a draw play, it's taken by George Sutter.
- 2:09:56He gets to the 7-yard line.
- 2:09:58Jim Larsberg made the back-off.
- 2:10:00Second down and goal to go after 7 for Dallas.
- 2:10:04This is what I didn't understand the last time
- 2:10:06the Cowboys had the ball deep into our territory.
- 2:10:09Why did it use George Sutter's Atlanta?
- 2:10:11He just got in and replaced it in your Danny White.
- 2:10:13And Tom Landry is called to play.
- 2:10:15He's called to play.
- 2:10:17He's sent the miss from the sideline.
- 2:10:19He's visited on using the down and out pattern
- 2:10:21or the post pattern to his wide receivers
- 2:10:23instead of using Tony Doris at it all.
- 2:10:25Now it's the in-sign to the 7.
- 2:10:27Ron Pring has gone out of the ball game.
- 2:10:29Jay Sarley in on the double side in.
- 2:10:31One more set back in the story set.
- 2:10:33Here's Ben Moschian.
- 2:10:35He's got 0, 0, 0.
- 2:10:37He's got it in the screen at the 5-yard line.
- 2:10:39Complete after 5-yard line.
- 2:10:42Good round.
- 2:10:44You want to make the tackle?
- 2:10:46There he is.
- 2:10:48He's also on the tackle.
- 2:10:50There's Pearson coming back slowly to the 100-yard line.
- 2:10:56Little Ben went in at the 5-yard line.
- 2:10:58Ron Pring comes back into the ball game.
- 2:11:01Third down and goal to go.
- 2:11:03At the 5.
- 2:11:05Big 3 down play.
- 2:11:07The crowd is rising to the revocation.
- 2:11:11Ray's enjoying setting even though
- 2:11:13the round is a quarter back.
- 2:11:15Now contact is important.
- 2:11:19Todd Bell.
- 2:11:21Got an early start.
- 2:11:24What's he pulled off?
- 2:11:28He just kept coming and
- 2:11:30the number is going to indicate.
- 2:11:33First trim and he's finished.
- 2:11:36That's not bad.
- 2:11:46Got 50.
- 2:11:51First trim, number 25, third down.
- 2:11:54Third down and goal to go with the ball move now
- 2:11:57to the 2.5-yard line.
- 2:11:59There's had the blitz on.
- 2:12:01That's why Todd Bell was coming.
- 2:12:03His key on that particular play
- 2:12:05was number 21, Pring to his emotion.
- 2:12:07Pring went in.
- 2:12:09Bell kept coming back on the 2.
- 2:12:11Third down play.
- 2:12:13Triple side in.
- 2:12:17Ocean exhaust.
- 2:12:19The fast play of the quarter-year zone is complete.
- 2:12:23And then if it does pass it,
- 2:12:25it's uncovering defensively.
- 2:12:28And then the left corner.
- 2:12:30And Tim Stick with covering defensively.
- 2:12:32And when Toronto put it up,
- 2:12:34four down coming down.
- 2:12:36The ball was perfectly thrown by Toronto.
- 2:12:38Freda Henderson, number 20,
- 2:12:40makes the big plays to rookie from San Diego State
- 2:12:42for the fine defensive play.
- 2:12:44Number 84, Doug Cosby for the Dallas Cowboys.
- 2:12:47Toronto has called side line.
- 2:12:49The Dallas Cowboys have called the time line.
- 2:12:51Toronto is going to the side line.
- 2:12:53With a story side, Chicago 3-Dollar 3-List.
- 2:12:55What about the other with the Bears?
- 2:12:59Well, a big ball game for the Dallas Cowboys.
- 2:13:01And a big decision.
- 2:13:03Do they go for three points or go for the touchdown?
- 2:13:05The touchdown and the conversion would give them the lead.
- 2:13:07If they miss on a touchdown attempt,
- 2:13:09the ball goes over to Chicago.
- 2:13:11If they settle for a field goal,
- 2:13:13they're still trailing 9-6.
- 2:13:15But there's still plenty of time left in the ball game.
- 2:13:17So my bet, knowing Tom Lentz
- 2:13:19he's tracked record over the years,
- 2:13:21is probably go for the field goal
- 2:13:23after what happens after.
- 2:13:25But he may have a different idea
- 2:13:27on the sidelines now he is discussing with Toronto.
- 2:13:30It'll be an interesting call.
- 2:13:32But the Chicago Bears,
- 2:13:33whether they turn to a field goal, a touchdown or not,
- 2:13:35have played a great game today.
- 2:13:37There are not the three and nine Chicago Bears
- 2:13:39that everybody has seen most of the season.
- 2:13:41They came to play today and have been fired up
- 2:13:43since the opening tick off.
- 2:13:45Earlier today, Detroit behind Eric Hipple
- 2:13:47has two touchdown passes,
- 2:13:49celebrating a Thanksgiving day
- 2:13:51with an impressive 27-10 victory
- 2:13:53over the Kansas City Chiefs
- 2:13:55at the Silver Dome in Pontiac
- 2:13:57where they are now 6-0.
- 2:13:59More stamina than gold
- 2:14:01it goes, Allison.
- 2:14:03Chicago 2-1 1.
- 2:14:05Chicago leading by 6 points
- 2:14:07and Toronto is back in the middle now.
- 2:14:09Second guessers will have a field goal with this.
- 2:14:11Tom Lentz resigning the field goal
- 2:14:13a chip shot for Rafael Cepián
- 2:14:15to pull through within a field goal.
- 2:14:17If they take the three points now, almost a short shot,
- 2:14:19they will have 9-6 lead
- 2:14:21as the Cowboys would have
- 2:14:23still 9 minutes of the fourth quarter
- 2:14:25to get the tying field goal
- 2:14:27or a go ahead touchdown.
- 2:14:29But right now, they are going for it
- 2:14:31on 4-2.5
- 2:14:33which means if they miss, the Bears will take over
- 2:14:35first to 10
- 2:14:37and the Cowboys drive with momentum.
- 2:14:39Over the Cowboys, get 6,
- 2:14:41do they get 7, do they get message?
- 2:14:43They move over, it's going to spring over.
- 2:14:45Toronto is a quarterback.
- 2:14:47If they can take the ball, it goes over.
- 2:14:49It was almost intercepted.
- 2:14:51Almost.
- 2:14:53Ike Highton's down.
- 2:14:55Ike Highton's down.
- 2:14:57That is the ball and Harbosch started coming down.
- 2:14:59Fourth down, the ball goes over.
- 2:15:01And as it's been pointed out,
- 2:15:03the second guess, that one for a long, long time.
- 2:15:05Tom Landry could not believe it
- 2:15:07when he saw the ball get batted away
- 2:15:09by Mark Hartnestine
- 2:15:11in his seventh year out of Penn State.
- 2:15:13Mike 6-3, 2-40 for he got his big arms
- 2:15:15up to the base of Toronto.
- 2:15:17Ron Spring had gone through.
- 2:15:19He was wide open in the end zone
- 2:15:21coming out of the backfield
- 2:15:23and the Cowboys could get the ball through.
- 2:15:25Make break for the Bears, they keep their 6-point lead.
- 2:15:27But they keep the ball just outside
- 2:15:29the two-yard line.
- 2:15:318-3 of the setback for Heaven.
- 2:15:33There's Ike.
- 2:15:35He started his way onto the four-yard line.
- 2:15:37In two-tall,
- 2:15:39John Greston's into the third there.
- 2:15:41Second on 8 at the four.
- 2:15:43Chicago Bears still in
- 2:15:45danger territory here.
- 2:15:47And the Cowboys trying to keep the pressure on.
- 2:15:51Point to the stopping block
- 2:15:53for the moment.
- 2:15:55Mark's the ball out there on the four-yard line.
- 2:15:57Now he marks them all ready for play.
- 2:15:59By the way,
- 2:16:01Walter Fateson came into this game with 841 yards.
- 2:16:03It now carries 31 times
- 2:16:05161 yards.
- 2:16:07Going over the 1,000 yards mark
- 2:16:09for his sixth consecutive year.
- 2:16:11That's the new NFC way.
- 2:16:15Chicago Bears up there with a running back team
- 2:16:17and up.
- 2:16:19Dennis Fateson.
- 2:16:21They've got him moving up to the 7-yard line.
- 2:16:23They've got three of them to be third down
- 2:16:25and five. Randy White made the stop.
- 2:16:27Four of the Dallas defense.
- 2:16:29Bears obviously,
- 2:16:31they're not going to risk putting it up down here.
- 2:16:33They'll keep it on the ground, keep that clock winding down.
- 2:16:35Fifth down to the passing department now
- 2:16:37is
- 2:16:39five out of 16.
- 2:16:41Five out of 16 for 40 yards
- 2:16:43with two interceptions.
- 2:16:45So the Bears will not put it up, they'll keep it on the ground.
- 2:16:47They'll try to get Parsons to the funding room
- 2:16:49and rely on their defense.
- 2:16:51Now the Schemboys are going to come out of all of this
- 2:16:53with a good field position.
- 2:16:55The pressure will be on the down to the Chicago defense
- 2:16:57once again.
- 2:16:59Fateson tries to light back.
- 2:17:01Michael Fateson is here to pick up on.
- 2:17:03He stops at the pin.
- 2:17:05They'll bring him to the point down.
- 2:17:07He's got a tackle along with John Dunn.
- 2:17:09Well, Parsons comes out now to put the ball.
- 2:17:11That's time Michael down.
- 2:17:13We said we're getting to know Walter Fateson very well.
- 2:17:15And of course, in the afternoon,
- 2:17:17does not take the fake. He held his ground to look
- 2:17:19out of price. He's 6'3", 198.
- 2:17:21And a good tackle stopping Fateson
- 2:17:23about two and a half yards shy of first down yards.
- 2:17:25Parsons is about five yards deep
- 2:17:27and he's on him.
- 2:17:29James Jones is out there
- 2:17:31at the 49th year of the Atlanta Chicago Bears
- 2:17:33to receive the putt.
- 2:17:35They're waiting for the snap.
- 2:17:37Parsons gets it, steps up.
- 2:17:39Cowboys have the return on good plus.
- 2:17:41That is James Jones back to his own 45.
- 2:17:43He's got a delight back.
- 2:17:45Looking for the wall.
- 2:17:47He's got a 55-40 out of 5
- 2:17:49at the 37-yard mark.
- 2:17:51He's got a lot of the portion of the wall
- 2:17:53on the left side.
- 2:17:55And the his left cabral running out.
- 2:17:57So now the Dallas Cowboys
- 2:17:59start first and end up in Chicago
- 2:18:0137 with the score.
- 2:18:03The Bears 9-0-3.
- 2:18:05Let's take time out.
- 2:18:13On-seat of the American Tom Gullick
- 2:18:15can beat six-seated Ralph Gehring
- 2:18:17of West Germany in straight sets.
- 2:18:19In women's play in Johannesburg
- 2:18:21all eight top seas of advance.
- 2:18:23Number two seed Virginia Wade defeated
- 2:18:25South African Annalise Muller.
- 2:18:27Third-seated Kathy Horvath
- 2:18:29and in the local favorite Lorna Zeitzman.
- 2:18:33Well, the Chicago Bears cling to a 9-3 lead,
- 2:18:36but again the Dallas Cowboys
- 2:18:38who have been threatening to score,
- 2:18:40but not quite getting there except for a field goal
- 2:18:43by Raphael Sefti and early in the ballgame
- 2:18:45had six minutes and 50 seconds
- 2:18:47to do something about that six-point deficit.
- 2:18:50The clock says we have six minutes and 50 seconds
- 2:18:53left to play on this game.
- 2:18:55The Chicago Bears are leading the Dallas Cowboys
- 2:18:57by a score of 9-3, but the Dallas Cowboys
- 2:19:00have them all first to win after Chicago's 37-yard line.
- 2:19:04The wings have gone off the field.
- 2:19:06They're bringing another side in on Jerry Salty.
- 2:19:09Toronto quarterback in the gym in the Fs
- 2:19:11with Andy Leiden who's empty for first time.
- 2:19:14The boy sets the lone setback for Toronto.
- 2:19:17Back off a wing right.
- 2:19:20Motion of cars for the wing back.
- 2:19:22That's Salty.
- 2:19:24Loving back his Toronto.
- 2:19:26He steps up and he's going to run the ball.
- 2:19:28He's headed for the side on the cross for 30
- 2:19:30because Adam Hansen is 26.
- 2:19:32He was looking for the sixth.
- 2:19:34He went out of the bar, and he's 26,
- 2:19:36and that will be a first down.
- 2:19:38Henderson ran him out.
- 2:19:40Loving Henderson in the break.
- 2:19:42So unable to find the receiver.
- 2:19:44Glenn Toronto is playing like a veteran out here this afternoon.
- 2:19:47He ran for the first down.
- 2:19:49He really is, but he got outside the constraint
- 2:19:51but Alan Sade's taken out of it by Herbert Scott.
- 2:19:53Colano looks at the corner.
- 2:19:55He also saw the Bears coming at him.
- 2:19:57Henderson had also liked single-stairing.
- 2:19:59Number 50 was freaking a thruster.
- 2:20:01The rookie out of bailers, single-stairing wanted his shot at him.
- 2:20:03But Colano got out of bounds.
- 2:20:05Colano now, freak carries, 14 yards for the last one.
- 2:20:07A key, cowboy first down.
- 2:20:09A lot of strings in the right side.
- 2:20:11Jordan Sets out leading the play.
- 2:20:13Waiting to set up. Here's a throwback to Sings.
- 2:20:15A lot of strings.
- 2:20:17He's into 25, and 20 to 15.
- 2:20:19The 10-yard line.
- 2:20:21He started with a quarterback.
- 2:20:23He's going for it.
- 2:20:25He's out there. He's out for the throwback across the field.
- 2:20:27But they have set up a screen left to spring.
- 2:20:29He advances down to the 10-yard line.
- 2:20:31Gary Finchick made the stop.
- 2:20:33Tom Landry pulling out all of his stops
- 2:20:35over on the dollar sideline right now.
- 2:20:37That's playing exactly as Lissy called it.
- 2:20:39I want to tell you, Colano had a con boy out there
- 2:20:41and he wanted to run the football.
- 2:20:43Instead, the play was set up to come back
- 2:20:45on a counter over the left side.
- 2:20:47The half-back played, leading the blocking out there for Dallas.
- 2:20:49Number 61, Jim Cooper the tackle.
- 2:20:516-5, 2-63, a five-year man and a couple.
- 2:20:53Racing 10-yard, just outside the 10-yard.
- 2:20:55Set out to the right side.
- 2:20:57Fives into the 6-yard line.
- 2:20:59He's higher up into the 6.
- 2:21:01Tony Dois set, Gary. Alan P. is giving the make the tackle.
- 2:21:03Second down and 6-joy to go.
- 2:21:05All of the 6-joy line.
- 2:21:07Dallas Dallas is slailing by 6 points.
- 2:21:09The block is running with 5 minutes 39 seconds.
- 2:21:11Let's play in this game.
- 2:21:13He goes a 3.
- 2:21:15He goes off the field and coming in.
- 2:21:17He's done target.
- 2:21:19Bill comes in defensively.
- 2:21:21So there's Bruce Herron born in Chicago Bears.
- 2:21:23Now here comes the Dallas Cowboy.
- 2:21:25They've done 2-30 to the right side.
- 2:21:27Double the 20-year-old.
- 2:21:29Running back through the straight to the right side.
- 2:21:31Here's the pick to spring.
- 2:21:33He drives the left side.
- 2:21:35He's at the 5-yard line and he's...
- 2:21:37It's a quick, quick, quick fell.
- 2:21:39Taking out the left straight.
- 2:21:41Bruce Herron hit it right at the flag.
- 2:21:43Chicago Bears caught him in the end.
- 2:21:45He lost.
- 2:21:47But he's got him at the flag.
- 2:21:49And the long swing has started.
- 2:21:51The score is 5.
- 2:21:53And Dallas has a great finish.
- 2:21:55Coming.
- 2:21:57The man that led the blocking.
- 2:21:59Number 33, Tony Dorsett.
- 2:22:01Wide around the left side.
- 2:22:03Hell, this block.
- 2:22:05And about the 6-yard line.
- 2:22:07He didn't allow the defender to slide off the block.
- 2:22:09It all just kept driving his man.
- 2:22:11Driving his backwards.
- 2:22:13And that allowed spring to turn it outside.
- 2:22:15Bruce Herron, the 4-year man from New Mexico.
- 2:22:17Dorsett held his block.
- 2:22:19Result, Dallas-Bushta.
- 2:22:21Jeff Deyed is not listed to conversion this year.
- 2:22:23He's 31-foot-31.
- 2:22:25Johnny Waters holding.
- 2:22:27Maratio, Jeff Deyed.
- 2:22:29Johnny Waters puts his ass.
- 2:22:31Jeff Deyed, who's the next?
- 2:22:33It's Jeff.
- 2:22:35And the Dallas come on to a hand.
- 2:22:37I am going to send him a ride.
- 2:22:39We'll be back in a moment.
- 2:22:41Is Lindsay Nelson excited?
- 2:22:43We're going to have a look at the
- 2:22:45CBS Radio Network.
- 2:22:47We'd like to remind you that looking ahead at a very busy holiday weekend,
- 2:22:49our next presentation on the Parade of Sports
- 2:22:51will be the final regular season game
- 2:22:53between Notre Dame and Miami of Florida
- 2:22:55from the Orange Bowl.
- 2:22:57That will be on Friday, the 27th of November,
- 2:22:59the day after this Thanksgiving day.
- 2:23:01And we'll have that game for you via
- 2:23:03the Mutual Radio Network,
- 2:23:05live from the Orange Bowl in Miami, Florida.
- 2:23:07Penn State will
- 2:23:09tangle with number one Pittsburgh
- 2:23:11on Saturday, and you'll hear that game
- 2:23:13on the Parade of Sports from
- 2:23:15Free River Stadium in Pittsburgh.
- 2:23:17Pittsburgh hoping to finish the season
- 2:23:19unbeaten, untied, and going to the
- 2:23:21Sugar Bowl opposite Georgia
- 2:23:23as the number one team in the country.
- 2:23:25Of course, Clemson will be
- 2:23:27watching that game with a lot of interest on Saturday.
- 2:23:29Clemson is currently ranked second,
- 2:23:31also unbeaten, untied.
- 2:23:33They have already finished their season.
- 2:23:35If Pittsburgh should follow against the Nidney Lions,
- 2:23:37Clemson very likely would be
- 2:23:39the first to win the game.
- 2:23:41And now, the Cowboys
- 2:23:43leading in the ballgame now with 5 minutes
- 2:23:45and 9 seconds remains to be played.
- 2:23:47We'll be kicking it off Rafael Cepri and
- 2:23:49is leading up to 35 yard line.
- 2:23:51Every more end is Sunday.
- 2:23:53They'll fish on one side,
- 2:23:55Mark and Adam are on the other.
- 2:23:57To receive it for the Chicago Bears,
- 2:23:59still a lot of time,
- 2:24:01but lots of things to happen here at
- 2:24:03Texas Stadium.
- 2:24:05We're waiting for the referee to put
- 2:24:07his hands on the ball.
- 2:24:09And it's been a battle between
- 2:24:11the Bears and the Cowboys here this afternoon.
- 2:24:15Just heavily with the whistle.
- 2:24:17And here comes Rafael Cepria.
- 2:24:19Put the cup into the air.
- 2:24:21And then, boy,
- 2:24:23and those people, the end comes with a lot of
- 2:24:25of that touchback.
- 2:24:27And if we put it play first, just at the 20 yard line,
- 2:24:29the Chicago Bears start giving yards away
- 2:24:31to see what they can do about
- 2:24:33regaining the lead over the Dallas Cowboys.
- 2:24:35Here at Texas Stadium where the Cowboys
- 2:24:37and I've lost the game, says Thanksgiving Day
- 2:24:39of 1979 when they lost to Houston.
- 2:24:41You have Kelly and I
- 2:24:43were here for that afternoon, as a matter of fact.
- 2:24:45That was 30-24 and you were still having
- 2:24:47Mexican food.
- 2:24:49So you had chili that afternoon.
- 2:24:51I certainly did. I'm glad to have four
- 2:24:53later this afternoon. Keep in mind now
- 2:24:55with 5-04 to go, all the bearers
- 2:24:57need is a field goal.
- 2:24:59Well, they've got to get in the field goal range.
- 2:25:01Evan is up waiting for the snap running back
- 2:25:03formation.
- 2:25:05Evan throws and it's complete.
- 2:25:07They can come to the 40 yard line.
- 2:25:09And it goes Ricky Watts.
- 2:25:11Who's ever been in that system?
- 2:25:13Ever since Wals made the stop.
- 2:25:15It'll begin her 20 yard pickup on the first place.
- 2:25:17This Evan threw that ball
- 2:25:19into the right on the bunny.
- 2:25:21Simply a square out he went down about 18 yards
- 2:25:23Ricky Watts. This turned it inside
- 2:25:25on number 24 Everson Wals.
- 2:25:27The NFL Interception Leader with 10
- 2:25:29moved the ball up first to set bears
- 2:25:31to the 40 yard line.
- 2:25:33Watts winding down inside 4.5.
- 2:25:35Marks you up to a wide left.
- 2:25:37Watts to a wide right.
- 2:25:39Oceanic now.
- 2:25:41That's Marks you up.
- 2:25:43And now it goes to Wals.
- 2:25:45Wals to Wals.
- 2:25:47Wals to Wals.
- 2:25:49Wals to Wals.
- 2:25:51Wals to Wals.
- 2:25:53Wals to Wals.
- 2:25:55Wals to Wals.
- 2:25:57Wals to Wals.
- 2:25:59That's wide right.
- 2:26:01That's on
- 2:26:01number 79 Harvey Vartson.
- 2:26:03He's 9 year old East Texas State 6'5".
- 2:26:05To 52.
- 2:26:07Simply blew by the entire bears office
- 2:26:26He's got the ball
- 2:26:27He's got the right side this time.
- 2:26:29That's one player.
- 2:26:30That's back to the end of the car.
- 2:26:31He gets up to 45 yards line.
- 2:26:33He's got 11 yards on the play.
- 2:26:35Dickerson came in to make the back up.
- 2:26:37He is amazing.
- 2:26:38Benny Barnes is 10th year from Stanford.
- 2:26:40Has pastes stopped back at about the 33 yards line.
- 2:26:43And Walderface simply outran it.
- 2:26:45He turned it to the outside.
- 2:26:46Got a key block by Badge-Nagel.
- 2:26:48And now pastes 35 carries.
- 2:26:50170 yards to the left.
- 2:26:52He's had quite a season here today.
- 2:26:54Here it is.
- 2:26:5535 yards to go.
- 2:26:57And it is by a big player.
- 2:26:58Walderface is a man.
- 2:26:5945 yards line.
- 2:27:00The man for Dickerson.
- 2:27:01Dickerson's count is up.
- 2:27:03And it's waiting for the fast now.
- 2:27:05That's back to the throw.
- 2:27:07And he gets it.
- 2:27:08After the outside, it's watching the plate.
- 2:27:10Watches the back into the pass.
- 2:27:12Betcha put on by Dickerson.
- 2:27:13So he never turns it on for him.
- 2:27:15And it is 4-down at 5 yards to go.
- 2:27:18Blocked his top with 2-52 left to play on the game.
- 2:27:21And it's as above as their own 45 yards line.
- 2:27:24They fail by a point.
- 2:27:26If they give it up for Lea, we get it back.
- 2:27:28No indication from the Bears bench.
- 2:27:30Let's do this.
- 2:27:31Our part is just coming into play now.
- 2:27:324-down in a long cut.
- 2:27:33I've only got a question that last play call.
- 2:27:35It takes so much time to develop.
- 2:27:37But the Cowboys are looking.
- 2:27:38They're putting pressure on this one.
- 2:27:40All you need is a simple down and out.
- 2:27:42This is this for the man.
- 2:27:444-down at 5 yards towards the home.
- 2:27:464-down.
- 2:27:47Little over 2 minutes to go.
- 2:27:48And it is right to play the game.
- 2:27:50And now, motion against the Chicago Bears.
- 2:27:54Here at Albrecht.
- 2:27:55Coming back in over to this.
- 2:27:56Touchdown.
- 2:27:57Back up there at Albrecht.
- 2:27:594-4, 6-7.
- 2:28:01That's 5-4 yards to make it 4-down and 5 yards to go.
- 2:28:05Albrecht coming back on his fast protection.
- 2:28:09Made the big throw before the top.
- 2:28:11Interesting play call now by Neal Armstrong.
- 2:28:14Now it's going to be 3-4 through the call.
- 2:28:1612-down.
- 2:28:17Number 64, Austin.
- 2:28:204-down.
- 2:28:21Obviously, nothing to lose to the 3-9 Bears.
- 2:28:23So you would think that 4-0 was the number 250 to go.
- 2:28:26You might want it away.
- 2:28:27Hope for a turnover.
- 2:28:28Hope your defense can contain the Cowboys.
- 2:28:30But the Bears are going to go for it on a 4-0 death.
- 2:28:33And Devon jumping back.
- 2:28:35He's dead.
- 2:28:36He left.
- 2:28:37First to the left side.
- 2:28:38And while the 10-0 is in the air.
- 2:28:40A 10-0 back at start.
- 2:28:42A 10-0 back at start.
- 2:28:43It's a 49 out of the Cowboys.
- 2:28:46It was Steve Wilson.
- 2:28:48That was a good one.
- 2:28:49And it's going to be interference against the Dallas Cowboys, I think.
- 2:28:52And we assessed the way to Chicago Bears.
- 2:28:54Acting at interference is calling a balance.
- 2:28:57That's an automatic 3-down.
- 2:28:593-10 to go for Chicago at the Dallas 49.
- 2:29:03Six defenders in there.
- 2:29:05Ricky Watt burned it outside.
- 2:29:06Ran wide away from Wilson.
- 2:29:08They had to pump it one.
- 2:29:09Wilson but it's clear the 5 yards zone after taking two short pops.
- 2:29:13Then gave him the elbow.
- 2:29:14The left hand was holding on with the left arm.
- 2:29:16Trying to grab the right arm.
- 2:29:18It was all over.
- 2:29:19Mr. Fawkes delivered perfectly by Evan.
- 2:29:21So Neil Armstrong gambled.
- 2:29:22And he got away with it.
- 2:29:23Chicago Bears trying to get the field to a range.
- 2:29:262 minutes and 42 seconds.
- 2:29:27And Evan and he's playing again.
- 2:29:28Running back to the 9-4.
- 2:29:29They say, you know, we're just the right side all the way across.
- 2:29:32Evan's a little bit off the pace.
- 2:29:34Evan's the right side gets 2 yards to the 38 yards.
- 2:29:37That's second down.
- 2:29:388 yards to the left to 38.
- 2:29:39Middle line back up.
- 2:29:40Bob Burningman at the top of the Dallas Cowboys.
- 2:29:43Cowboys 9-3.
- 2:29:45Tied for first in the NFC Eastern Division with the Philadelphia Eagles.
- 2:29:49The Eagles lost 20-10 in Philadelphia to the New York Giants last Sunday.
- 2:29:53And for all intents and purposes, thought that perhaps their chances at winning the
- 2:29:57Eastern Division were gone because they still have to play here in Texas stadium against
- 2:30:01the Cowboys.
- 2:30:02And the Cowboys having won 17-14 against the Eagles.
- 2:30:05Owned the Tied Raker at least the first one.
- 2:30:07So everybody figured that if both teams went undefeated until that meeting, the Cowboys
- 2:30:11playing at home would win.
- 2:30:13Or certainly if they'd split, they would still have the edge going into the NFC.
- 2:30:17Who would have imagined that Chicago Bears had two touchdown underdogs when rising for
- 2:30:21a go-ad field goal with two minutes left to go?
- 2:30:23We'll be back in one moment.
- 2:30:25Well, as we turn into the holiday season with Thanksgiving starting the winter holiday season,
- 2:30:31there are a couple of trades to report.
- 2:30:33In Pro Basketball, the NBA Seattle SuperSonics, the New Jersey Nets completed a trade.
- 2:30:37The Sonics sent forward James Bailey.
- 2:30:39He's a big one.
- 2:30:41To New Jersey, for rookie forward Ray Tolbert and a future draft pick.
- 2:30:43Bailey averaged a little over 14 points a game last season.
- 2:30:47Scoring less than half that this year.
- 2:30:49Tolbert played last season with the NCAA Champion Indiana Hoosiers.
- 2:30:53In the hockey trade in the NHL, the Colorado Rockies sent right-winger Lanny McDonnell
- 2:30:57and a future draft pick to the Calgary Flames in exchange for forwards Don Lieber and Bob
- 2:31:03McMillan.
- 2:31:04McDonnell goes to Calgary after scoring 66 goals in two seasons with Colorado.
- 2:31:08In return, Colorado gets Lieber who has 234 goals in nine NHL seasons.
- 2:31:14And in McMillan, the Rockies get an eight-year veteran and a family bond.
- 2:31:18He's the brother of Colorado General Manager Billy McMillan.
- 2:31:21The question is, can the Bears get him positioned for a field goal that can win it?
- 2:31:25The Chicago Bears let the clock run down to two minutes where we got the automatic tie-off
- 2:31:31that we're completing just now.
- 2:31:33So we have two minutes left to play on the ball game.
- 2:31:35Chicago has the ball, second down and eight yards to go with the 38-yard line of the
- 2:31:39Dallas Cowboys.
- 2:31:40The Cowboys are leading center-bound John Ceretto.
- 2:31:43Long to sideline for Chicago, it's loosening up this leg.
- 2:31:46Hopefully, he'll get a shot and a field goal at them.
- 2:31:49Now the Bears are up there in the high formation.
- 2:31:51Heaven gets the ball, hands it up.
- 2:31:52The Wall to Pace, Wall to Pace struggles through to the 35-yard line and John doesn't
- 2:31:57come to make the tackle.
- 2:31:58They got three on the plate.
- 2:31:59It'll be three down and five yards to go.
- 2:32:01A big three and five for the Chicago Bears at the 35-yard line of the Dallas Cowboys.
- 2:32:06And if you're thinking field goal, they are way out of John Ceretto's range.
- 2:32:09He is over all.
- 2:32:10He hasn't even tried one outside of 50.
- 2:32:12One for three between the 40 and the 49.
- 2:32:15So they need to pick up another 10 yards to get into realistic John Ceretto field goal
- 2:32:20range for the Chicago Bears.
- 2:32:22The Bears longest is 47 yards.
- 2:32:25This would be a 52 if they get this right from here.
- 2:32:28This is a three and five.
- 2:32:31Heaven is up there now running back to the mound.
- 2:32:33Here's a six to Pace.
- 2:32:35Pace gets there into the 32-yard line.
- 2:32:3832-yard line.
- 2:32:40And this is going to be about a 49-yard field goal.
- 2:32:42It's got Mike Heckman coming in to make the tackle.
- 2:32:44They'll get the ball spotted.
- 2:32:46Then they'll get it lined up.
- 2:32:48Ceretto is coming onto the field and Avelini is coming on the whole form.
- 2:32:52So it's all coming down to the 40 Chicago Bears.
- 2:32:55Liner's gimmick is a 32.
- 2:32:58Roberto takes one quick clue as he comes out there.
- 2:33:00It will be a 49-yarder.
- 2:33:02Steps his lock.
- 2:33:03It's a year of 47.
- 2:33:04Ake's for a right.
- 2:33:0644 seconds on the clock.
- 2:33:08And that is leading by a 4-7-9.
- 2:33:11And the crowd is on his feet.
- 2:33:13Avelini puts it down.
- 2:33:15The ball is footed.
- 2:33:16It's carrying.
- 2:33:17And it is.
- 2:33:18No good.
- 2:33:19Wide right.
- 2:33:20So good.
- 2:33:21Wide to the right.
- 2:33:22And the ball goes over after Liner's gimmick is a 32.
- 2:33:2631 seconds on the clock.
- 2:33:28It was long enough.
- 2:33:30He had plenty of toe.
- 2:33:32He spliced it just a little bit to the right side.
- 2:33:35And the Bears who played so valiantly this afternoon will fall one point short
- 2:33:40because two tall Jones blocked the next two points.
- 2:33:43The step was good.
- 2:33:44The spot was good.
- 2:33:46Roberto nailed it.
- 2:33:47He knew it was long enough but he watched it just spliced off to the right side.
- 2:33:51And the second error is golf shot.
- 2:33:53And the Bears who seemed to have begun,
- 2:33:55well it actually began on a losing note and it continued that way.
- 2:33:58With just three wins to nine losses.
- 2:34:00It was about three and ten.
- 2:34:02And the Dallas Cowboys will go to ten and three.
- 2:34:05Height alignment now.
- 2:34:068-0 seems to have two downouts.
- 2:34:08He made them all a second like a lot of them.
- 2:34:10He's definitely hit the deck.
- 2:34:11Down at the back, hit the deck.
- 2:34:14Right there at the Liner's curve.
- 2:34:17And we're getting a time out here.
- 2:34:20I guess the Chicago Bears will have one more.
- 2:34:26Jack Eberling indicating Dallas, Chicago number two.
- 2:34:29We'll be back in a moment.
- 2:34:31Well, assuming Dallas can hold on to this ball in less than 30 seconds,
- 2:34:35that's almost in the bank, Dallas will go to ten and three and go up on Philadelphia.
- 2:34:39The Eagles do not play until next Monday night when they take on the Dolphins in Miami, Florida,
- 2:34:44the Monday Night Feature.
- 2:34:45And the pressure will be on them to stay with Dallas and they'll have to go up with a victory at Miami.
- 2:34:49And Miami, of course, will be smarting.
- 2:34:51They have to win if they want to keep pace with the New York Jets.
- 2:34:55The Jets have a relatively easy assignment, but is anything really relatively easy this year in the NFL?
- 2:35:00The Jets will host the Annette Baltimore Colts on Sunday and figure to win that one.
- 2:35:05Baltimore having won only one and lost 11 and having the worst defensive record,
- 2:35:09having allowed 412 points.
- 2:35:12They're averaging when they come on the field.
- 2:35:15Baltimore average is getting up close to 40 points of ballgame this year and it's tough to win that way.
- 2:35:20So it would seem that Miami, almost like Philadelphia, has to come up with a win on Monday night
- 2:35:26if it hopes to keep pace with the New York Jets who have a much easier assignment this weekend.
- 2:35:32Dallas Cowboys against Maptville, one of the quarter-mackerel hits the deck.
- 2:35:37And another timeout call by the Chicago Bears.
- 2:35:40That's their final timeout.
- 2:35:41They'll come up to 3-13.
- 2:35:51The Chicago Bears can stop the clock.
- 2:35:53They have used up their 3-a-lot of timesouts.
- 2:35:55And here comes Dallas Cowboys up to the line once again.
- 2:35:58They're out of ending in.
- 2:36:00He gets them all hit the deck and now they let it run.
- 2:36:0216 seconds on the clock.
- 2:36:04And that will be all.
- 2:36:05They don't have to snap it anymore.
- 2:36:07Dallas Cowboys have come up behind to win the football game.
- 2:36:12And it's been a thriller here at Texas Stadium.
- 2:36:14It was close to failure of battle for the Chicago Bears.
- 2:36:18But that's the end of the game between the Chicago Bears and Dallas Cowboys
- 2:36:23where the final score with Cowboys wins their timeout.
- 2:36:27So we'll get back to Lusian Alphen and Jim Kelly for some post-game comments.
- 2:36:31They're a really tough loss for the Chicago Bears.
- 2:36:33If you're an impartial observer, it's been a rough season for Neil Armstrong,
- 2:36:37Ted Marchabrota and the entire coaching staff at Chicago.
- 2:36:40The defense has been much more line.
- 2:36:42The offensive times was non-existent.
- 2:36:44But today they put together a fine effort.
- 2:36:46But as pointed out, came up one point short.
- 2:36:49That extra point attempt was the turning point in the ball game.
- 2:36:52As Dallas came back, scored a touchdown, came from behind,
- 2:36:55and set the end out of the extra point.
- 2:36:57And that was really the difference in the ball game.
- 2:36:59Both teams played well when they had to,
- 2:37:01but Chicago just came up a bit short.
- 2:37:03But there's one thing sure we're going to lose in the locker room tonight.
- 2:37:06Neil Armstrong is not going to make any comments like he did last week
- 2:37:10when his team was so inept offensively with only 24 total yards against the Detroit Lions.
- 2:37:16After that game, Neil Armstrong said,
- 2:37:18we were so bad last Sunday, we even look lousy coming out of the huddle.
- 2:37:22Now let's get back to Dallas, Texas.
- 2:37:25Good game, that's the good game.
- 2:37:28Good game, good game.
- 2:37:30Good game, let's get out to back at Texas Stadium.
- 2:37:32It was a dandy, it was anything, let's see, but a turkey.
- 2:37:35There was, it was a thrilling football game, and the Cowboys wanted my watch.
- 2:37:39It was 3-3 at the end of the first half,
- 2:37:41set the end of 41 yard field goal for Dallas,
- 2:37:43the 44 yarded by John Juvena for the Bears.
- 2:37:46And that's the way we were to a scoreless third period.
- 2:37:4813-39 left in the game.
- 2:37:50The Chicago Bears used 15 plays, 80 yards, 9-58 in the clock,
- 2:37:55and then 7 snapped it off with a 1 yard touchdown
- 2:37:57on the point after which blocked by it,
- 2:37:59two-tall jump, and the Bears were swinging to a precarious 9-3 lead.
- 2:38:03Cowboys got it back down to the Chicago Bears 5 yard line,
- 2:38:06and on 4th and 5th, Tom Landry disdain the field goal
- 2:38:09that would have put Dallas in an in-crate.
- 2:38:11Colorado rolled out to the right side,
- 2:38:13Spring was open in the right side of the end zone,
- 2:38:15but the Wubba Hall was fatted down by Mark Heitzenstine,
- 2:38:18and the Bears took over. They punted,
- 2:38:20and then the Dallas Cowboys drove 37 yards for plays,
- 2:38:23141 on the clock,
- 2:38:24and last spring punched it over to 6 yards out around the left side.
- 2:38:27The 70-inch conversion turned out to be the winning margin.
- 2:38:30In 10-9, the Cowboys over Chicago,
- 2:38:32as the Bears missed what would have been the winning field goal.
- 2:38:34By John Romero, he sliced his wide to the right side
- 2:38:37with under a half-minute left to play from 49 yards out.
- 2:38:41So there you have it, the game between the Chicago Bears
- 2:38:44and the Dallas Cowboys has ended with a Cowboys winning in tonight.
- 2:38:48Well, our thanks to Lindsay Nelson and Jim Kelly of CDF Radio
- 2:38:51for their description of what turned out to be a very surprising
- 2:38:54and entertaining ball game down at the Dome in,
- 2:38:57rather than make it down at the Texas Stadium in Irving, Texas,
- 2:39:00home of the Dallas Cowboys.
- 2:39:02The final score again was Dallas 10 and Chicago 9,
- 2:39:06and believe you me, the Dallas Cowboys, after this game,
- 2:39:10will know that they were in a ball game this Thanksgiving day.
- 2:39:14Dallas coming away very fortunate with a victory.
- 2:39:16The only thing that separated these two teams was that blocked extra points.
- 2:39:20So at the moment, Dallas is taking over the lead
- 2:39:23in the National Conference Eastern Division
- 2:39:26over the Philadelphia Eagles by one-half a game,
- 2:39:29and that of course, depending on the outcome of Philadelphia's battle
- 2:39:32with the Miami Dolphins on Monday night.
- 2:39:34Final score again in the ball game to Dallas Cowboys 10.
- 2:39:37The Chicago Bears had nine.
- 2:39:40One point difference, anything but a turkey on this turkey day.
- 2:39:44Earlier, Detroit had a relatively easy time,
- 2:39:47leading at the intermission 17-7 over a high-powered Kansas City offense,
- 2:39:51and holding on and coming on strong in the second half,
- 2:39:54holding KC to but a field goal in the third quarter
- 2:39:57to win it 27-10.
- 2:39:59Eric Hipple threw two touchdown passes in that ball game
- 2:40:02as Detroit beat Kansas City 27-10.
- 2:40:05Detroit very much still in the running for the NFC Central
- 2:40:08as either the division winner or a wild card.
- 2:40:11They are only a half a game back of Minnesota in the standings there.
- 2:40:14Minnesota had seven and five.
- 2:40:16Detroit at the moment, seven and six.
- 2:40:18Minnesota plays Green Bay on Sunday.
- 2:40:21So the Chicago Bears now have a record of three and 10,
- 2:40:24but they can hold their heads up high after a very valiant effort
- 2:40:27against the Dallas Cowboys.
- 2:40:29Dallas, of course, is a questionable team next week.
- 2:40:32They know exactly how bad Danny White suffered those bruised ribs,
- 2:40:35but he was taken to the hospital for X-rays,
- 2:40:38and, of course, depending on what those show,
- 2:40:40he may or may not be available for service next week.
