Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to the show, everyone!
- 0:01I'm Dangerous Zygos, here with DJ Universe, Calvin Blingwell,
- 0:05and Dandy Market.
- 0:06And look, I have to start with a scene from Philadelphia.
- 0:09It is June 2023 at the Roots Picnic.
- 0:12Jay-Z is headlining this massive celebration of his three-decade run,
- 0:17but the real story happened the night before at this tiny, ultra-exclusive warm-up
- 0:22gig.
- 0:22Beyoncé rolls up, the room is electric, and it hit me: after thirty years,
- 0:27the music itself isn't just art anymore.
- 0:29It is the ultimate high-end marketing campaign for a multi-billion-dollar ecosystem.
- 0:35Man, that is pure facts.
- 0:37As a manager, I look at that Philly show and see the blueprint.
- 0:41Jay-Z didn't build a ten-figure net worth off the master recordings of Reasonable
- 0:46Doubt.
- 0:47He used the music as leverage.
- 0:49He hit the pavement, toured relentlessly, and then flipped that cultural equity into
- 0:54hard assets.
- 0:55We are talking the 40/40 Club back in 2003, then buying Armand de Brignac champagne,
- 1:02and launching D'Usse cognac.
- 1:04The music is the megaphone; the products are the payoff.
- 1:09See, coming up as an artist in Calabasas right now, everybody wants the Jay-Z
- 1:14result, but nobody wants the cash-flow reality.
- 1:17Let us put the actual math on the table.
- 1:19Spotify pays roughly 0.003 to 0.005 dollars per stream.
- 1:26That means to buy a decent dinner, you need hundreds of thousands of plays.
- 1:31Meanwhile, if I hand-press a hundred hoodies and sell them for eighty bucks a pop at
- 1:37the merch table, that is eight grand cash in hand.
- 1:41The stream is a business card; the physical product is the rent money.
- 1:47You had to stay lit to survive, Calvin, and that is the absolute truth.
- 1:51These young kids are completely blinded by the digital dashboard.
- 1:55They are chasing those Spotify monthly listener stats because they can screenshot
- 1:59them and post them on Instagram.
- 2:02But you cannot pay your landlord with a screenshot of two million monthly listeners
- 2:07if those listeners are only yielding fractions of a penny.
- 2:11Visibility is a mirage.
- 2:13True wealth is ownership of the distribution channel.
- 2:17Exactly.
- 2:17If you are getting half a penny per play, you are essentially a tenant farmer on
- 2:21Spotify's land.
- 2:23Jay-Z realized early on that he needed to own the building.
- 2:26When he sold half of Armand de Brignac to LVMH in 2021, that was not because people
- 2:32loved his verse on Monster; it was because he owned the physical liquid in the
- 2:36bottle.
- 2:38And that is the gap we have to bridge for the 2026 class of artists.
- 2:42You cannot play the game like it is still 1996, but you have to keep the same
- 2:47ownership mentality.
- 2:49So how do we actually run this playbook today?
- 2:51Because we do not all have LVMH calling us.
- 2:55For me, every single venue I play has to operate like a physical retail storefront.
- 3:01The stage is just the window display.
- 3:03I need a massive QR code on the screen behind me linking directly to my Shopify.
- 3:09I need a physical mail-capture list at the merch table where we offer a free
- 3:14unreleased track right there on Bandcamp if they sign up.
- 3:18If you leave a venue without your crowd's email addresses, you basically did a free
- 3:22promo gig for the venue owner.
- 3:25And the entry barrier is basically zero now.
- 3:27Back in Hov's day, you had to order five thousand CDs and hope they did not sit in
- 3:31your trunk.
- 3:32Now?
- 3:33You plug Printful or Printify into your backend, design a tee,
- 3:38and you do not pay a dime until a fan actually orders it.
- 3:41You run a Patreon tier for thirty bucks a month offering early vinyl access,
- 3:45and suddenly you have a predictable, recurring monthly salary.
- 3:48You do not need a million fans; you need five hundred people who will buy whatever
- 3:52you touch.
- 3:54That is why the Roots Picnic model is so beautiful.
- 3:57It is a Black-owned cultural festival.
- 3:59They are not just booking talent; they built an entire ecosystem based on audience
- 4:04trust.
- 4:05When an artist plays there, they are aligning with a brand that the community
- 4:09respects.
- 4:10That trust is worth way more than a standard corporate festival guarantee check
- 4:14because those fans will follow you home to your direct-to-fan channels.
- 4:19This connects perfectly to the principles of Supreme Mathematics.
- 4:22Knowledge is knowing your actual numbers, down to the decimal point of your shipping
- 4:27costs.
- 4:28Wisdom is taking action on that knowledge--not just staring at the dashboard,
- 4:33but building the Shopify store.
- 4:35And Understanding is creating a self-sustaining system that survives long after your
- 4:39current single drops out of the playlist rotation.
- 4:44Man, that is it.
- 4:45If selling one high-quality, fifty-dollar hoodie makes you more profit than fifty
- 4:50thousand streams on an DSP, why are we still treating the live show as the promotion
- 4:55for the album?
- 4:56The album is the commercial for the show, the merch, and the community.
- 5:01It is a complete flip of the legacy mindset.
- 5:03If you want generational wealth, stop begging the algorithm to love you,
- 5:07and start building a business that can survive without it.
- 5:11And that is the real lesson of thirty years of Jay-Z.
- 5:13Thanks for rocking with us.
- 5:14We will catch you on the next one.
