Latest / Lisa & Russell / Ben O'Shea - Klara and the Sun - Everything I Like Is Bombing
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Right to Flick with Ben O'Shea. Okay. Well, well, well.
- 0:08Speaker 1: Clara and the Sun. Yeah, Clara and the Sun, directed
- 0:11Speaker 1: by Kiwi director Taika Waititi. Oh, is it? Yeah, so
- 0:15Speaker 1: Taika Waititi, this is his latest film. So he did Boy.
- 0:18Speaker 1: He did Hunt for the Wilder People. He did the
- 0:20Speaker 1: last couple of Thor movies. Gee, I love Boy. He
- 0:22Speaker 1: did Jojo Rabbit, which was a bit polarising. Yeah, but
- 0:24Speaker 1: it was good. It's famous, though. And he's got a
- 0:27Speaker 1: very quirky aesthetic. He's married to Rita Ora. He is.
- 0:31Speaker 1: He is. And so if you know Taika Waititi's movies,
- 0:33Speaker 1: you kind of know what you're in for with this film.
- 0:35Speaker 1: But honestly, I'm starting to think I'm going crazy as
- 0:37Speaker 1: a film critic because I thought Digger was good. A
- 0:41Speaker 1: lot of people hated it. Oh, jeez. A monumental flop.
- 0:44Speaker 1: But the funniest thing about Digger is, though, people are
- 0:46Speaker 1: going to the cinema, ironically, and posting a picture of
- 0:49Speaker 1: themselves going, I'm the only one here at Digger. You
- 0:51Speaker 1: know who's having the last laugh at that. Do you
- 0:53Speaker 1: know what, though? Then they're posting afterwards going, I don't
- 0:55Speaker 1: know what everyone's talking about. This movie is actually awesome.
- 0:59Speaker 1: And then at the Social Reckoning, also people didn't think. Oh,
- 1:01Speaker 1: that's the one that surprised me. People thought that was
- 1:03Speaker 1: a bit mid. I actually thought that was excellent. And
- 1:05Speaker 1: Clara and the Sun, critics thought this was the worst
- 1:07Speaker 1: of the three. Like, it's something like 24% on Rotten Tomatoes.
- 1:11Speaker 1: Who's the digger? Which basically makes it unwatchable, right? Like,
- 1:14Speaker 1: if anything is under 30 on Rotten Tomatoes, it's unwatchable. Okay.
- 1:17Speaker 1: But guess what? It's awesome. Clara, the sun is really good.
- 1:20Speaker 1: It's set in this sort of... You know, at the
- 1:22Speaker 1: end of the day... I think Ben's detached from the
- 1:25Speaker 1: general population. But this is so sweet. But you have
- 1:27Speaker 1: to be on board with Taika Waititi's filmmaking, right? Yes.
- 1:30Speaker 1: Which I feel like, as Aussies and fans of his work,
- 1:32Speaker 1: I think you're already halfway there, right? Yes. And it's
- 1:35Speaker 1: got the great Jenna Ortega from Wednesday... And she plays
- 1:39Speaker 1: this artificial friend, a friend AF, who is basically a robot.
- 1:44Speaker 1: And you hire them as a companion for your kids, probably.
- 1:48Speaker 1: And so Amy Adams plays Chrissy, the mum. Get them
- 1:51Speaker 1: to do their homework. She's great. Amy Adams is awesome.
- 1:55Speaker 1: And she's sort of like an absent mum. She's very
- 1:57Speaker 1: busy with her work, super rich. That's why they get her.
- 2:00Speaker 1: And her daughter, Josie, has had a genetic procedure to
- 2:04Speaker 1: make her super intelligent, which is something kids in the
- 2:06Speaker 1: future can get done. It's called being lifted. But because
- 2:10Speaker 1: of this procedure, it's actually made her very sick. So
- 2:13Speaker 1: she can't get out of the house much. So the
- 2:15Speaker 1: mum gets the robot. Is this Samantha Morton's daughter? Yeah.
- 2:18Speaker 1: In real life? Yeah, yeah. Spitting image. It's a real
- 2:22Speaker 1: Nepo film, though. So there's also Aaron Murphy, who's Cillian
- 2:26Speaker 1: Murphy's son. Oh, okay. And Hugo Weaving's son is in
- 2:30Speaker 1: it as well. Oh, really? Okay. I don't know if
- 2:32Speaker 1: Taika Waititi was doing it as a bit or what,
- 2:34Speaker 1: but it's certainly weird to have so many Nepo babies
- 2:37Speaker 1: in the one film. But the film is so sweet,
- 2:40Speaker 1: and it's about the relationship between Josie, this girl, and
- 2:43Speaker 1: her robot who's solar-powered. She thinks the sun... is like
- 2:46Speaker 1: an all-powerful entity that can grant wishes because she has
- 2:50Speaker 1: a very limited understanding of how the world actually works.
- 2:54Speaker 1: And so I guess there's an examination of identity, of
- 2:58Speaker 1: found family, all of that sort of stuff. And there's
- 3:01Speaker 1: real moments of emotion in this film as well. But
- 3:03Speaker 1: it's also funny. Rachel House is in it, who you
- 3:06Speaker 1: know from Hunt for the Wilderpeople, who's in a lot
- 3:08Speaker 1: of Taika Waititi films. Natasha Lyonne, who I love. She
- 3:11Speaker 1: plays the store manager who's selling these artificial friends. Um,
- 3:15Speaker 1: there's a lot going on there. There's some great music
- 3:17Speaker 1: in it as well. The Violent Femmes song, um, from,
- 3:20Speaker 1: from back in the day. Uh, so I honestly don't
- 3:23Speaker 1: know what people were thinking who, who didn't like this film.
- 3:26Speaker 1: It's based on a bestselling, very, very popular cult book, um,
- 3:29Speaker 1: by Japanese author Kazuo Ishiguro. Uh, and like you watch
- 3:34Speaker 1: this film and you go, do you know what? This
- 3:35Speaker 1: is such a sweet film. Blister in the sun. Is it? Feeling, uh,
- 3:39Speaker 1: feeling good. Oh, okay. Like 1983. It's like a deep cut.
- 3:43Speaker 1: It's like, and when it comes on, When it comes on,
- 3:45Speaker 1: you just go, oh, man, that is so cool. And
- 3:49Speaker 1: there's lots of moments like that. It's beautiful to watch.
- 3:51Speaker 1: The cinematography is amazing. So you like it? Yeah. Given
- 3:55Speaker 1: that you do like it, how much do you think
- 3:57Speaker 1: it'll lose? It's going to be another flop. It's going
- 4:01Speaker 1: to flop. How many, it's no bumbling boobies, are you?
- 4:06Speaker 1: Still my favourite AI friend. Are you giving it? I'm
- 4:09Speaker 1: going to give it a three and a half. Three
- 4:11Speaker 1: and a half. Very, very solid. Three and a half.
- 4:13Speaker 1: So you're saying it's worth a look? Yeah, worth a look. Meanwhile,
- 4:16Speaker 1: millions of people go see Verity, which is stinker. Yeah,
- 4:19Speaker 1: and that rated, you know, at the box office through
- 4:21Speaker 1: the roof. There's no accounting for taste, is there? There
- 4:25Speaker 1: is no accounting for taste. Go see Clara and the Sun.
- 4:27Speaker 1: Go see Clara and the Sun. It's a great film.
