- 1:07J A b F zero five. It is episode eleven of season eighteen.
- 1:11Revenge is a dish best served three times. I am Dando, I am
- 1:15Elliot, j O'Neill, Wow, what happened to you guy? Sexy all
- 1:19of a sudden? Or sexy year? I should say sexy year sexy somehow
- 1:23both younger rand border? I would say you're border you guys? Yeah?
- 1:30Probably, Well we'll both took our heads in the Shino baller and make embarrassons
- 1:36afterwards, I reckon right now though, guys getting his teeth just all dismantled
- 1:41by some crazy dentist in BALI that's reading it to Barli's. Barley's not Barzer

- 1:57that every single week. But since guys away in Barley get his teeth fixed,
- 2:00we thought who better than to fill the seat than Elliott j O'Neill,
- 2:02So thank you for joining you, sir, No worries and yeah, fresh
- 2:06off my own dental work. I had a crown put in last week.
- 2:08In fact, what is a crown put in? What actually is it?
- 2:13Now? I get told off by Nikola I won't pronounce the action of crown
- 2:15because she's like, it's not crazy because I say crown. Nicolas just opened
- 2:20the door. Can do you hear me? Nicholas heard we are travel and
- 2:24Elliot's wave as well that it so basically when I say words like crown,
- 2:30but I say crown instead of crayon, right, So do you say crayon
- 2:32or crown? I say, I say crown. I'm the worst person to
- 2:37ask. I pronounced things so weird all the time, like every time,
- 2:39like especially letters like the letter B or anything that with an E sound.
- 2:45Sometimes I go bay like and for our ae w Frians. Yeah. Yeah,
- 2:51if I'm talking about the BBC, I'll sometimes say baba, say like
- 2:54or the or the b No, it is the b CC, not the
- 2:58BBC. You said the BBC, right, I was talking about the British
- 3:01Broadcasting Channel or whatever it's called. But yeah, anyway, we're here to
- 3:07talk about our revenge as at dish best so three times not gonna lie listeners.
- 3:10When I said to Alie this is what we're doing, he goes,
- 3:14oh, god z his death. So basically, for anyone who hasn't listened
- 3:20to The Simpsons Index, you've been on the show before, you've explained,
- 3:22but just in case they've listened to this for the first time they've ever heard
- 3:23of your show, what is it executive that you do on the Simpsons Index
- 3:27podcast and why is it that you've already reviewed this episode A couple of times.
- 3:30Well, yeah, over at the Simpsons Index, we used to review
- 3:35three episodes at a time, with each one coming from a different decade.
- 3:38We used to get into like talking about how the show had changed over you
- 3:43know, the three different eras that it was in then when it started.
- 3:46Now it's like ballooned out to four. But yeah, so recently we did
- 3:51catch up and we've reviewed about the first nineteen seasons. But yeah, so
- 3:53now we're just more or less reviewing the newest stuff while still being from the
- 3:58last fifteen years whatever define newer, Like where are you currently at? What
- 4:02are you doing? So we've completed the first nineteen seasons and we're currently catching
- 4:08up on everything from season twenty and after doing them in chronological order or he
- 4:12just no, essentially random order. Like sometimes I'll pick an episode to cater
- 4:16two the guests, because yeah, we have a different guest on every week,
- 4:19and yeah, I'll try to pick an episode that maybe pertains to their
- 4:23interests or something. I like to get a lot of other different podcasters on,
- 4:27Like an episode we got coming out soon, I got Steve from Cinemarcade
- 4:30coming out. It's a video game movie podcast, So there was a recent
- 4:33episode about roadblocks that we reviewed with him, and that was a lot of
- 4:36fun. And I'm forgetting your first question already. Oh why have I reviewed
- 4:43this episode a bunch? So on what? I reviewed this episode with the
- 4:48other Simpsons podcast Worst Episode Ever who exclusively delve into bad Simpsons, and I
- 4:55also reviewed it, yeah, with my regular co host. So yeah,
- 4:58I've already reviewed this episode twice. But you know what, reviewing revenge is
- 5:02a best dish best of three times is worth reviewing three times, So let's
- 5:05go. It's like, it makes sense, right, It's funny how the
- 5:09unified theory of for figure disc and all works out that way. But I'm
- 5:13not gonna lie. I mean, I'm never a huge fan of these trilogy
- 5:15episodes that they seem to sort of start doing in the teen seasons. Never
- 5:18used to do this back in the day, you had your trilogy, you
- 5:20had your sorry Trios of horror. They did. They did do the what
- 5:25was that one where they had the their I want candy shit at the end
- 5:28the spinoff showcase. They did that. Yeah, was there any other trilogy
- 5:30ones in the in like that what the people call the Golden Era? No,
- 5:33because even Bible stories were Season ten, and I think a lot of
- 5:36people will debate if that's classic or not, but I say season ten's kind
- 5:42of in the Golden Year, like it's still it's it's around close enough,
- 5:45I guess, yeah, no, absolutely, And I mean even the next
- 5:48one after that, Simpson's Tall Tales. That's an episode I actually love,
- 5:50I'm gonna be honest, and that's from season twelve, I believe. But
- 5:55yeah, the trilogy episodes did become annualized in the teen's era, and I
- 6:00think it's either this season maybe season seventeen that had two of them. Innute
- 6:03as well. Okay, I just realized this was going to be one of
- 6:06the trilogy ones because I'm never a huge fan of them, and nothing I
- 6:11dislike this one. I just thought there wasn't much to it, and I
- 6:13did. It's funny they made the joke at the end of it how this
- 6:15could have been a Halloween episode, the Batman one. That one totally could
- 6:19have been a Halloween Treos of Horror segment, don't you think. Yeah,
- 6:24I don't really know why it wasn't, or maybe it just didn't make the
- 6:27cut for this year's Treehouse of Horror or something, and then maybe, But
- 6:31Batman Begins was still kind of relevant, I mean relevant pertaining to assist Simpson's
- 6:36turnaround of a parody. But still and they just wanted to get out there,
- 6:41I speculate. But yeah, it came out in two thousand and five,
- 6:44didn't it. So January two thousand and seven is still pretty relevant.
- 6:47Yeah, relevant enough. Yeah, we're probably just on the cusp of Dark
- 6:53Knight coming out. Yeah, it's not really a Batman Begins parody. It's
- 6:57just the Batman story, right, It's just the titles I play on Batman
- 7:00Begins. No, that's and that's part of my problem with this segment as
- 7:04well, is that it doesn't know whether it wants to be like new,
- 7:06serious, gritty Batman or old campy sixties Batman. But we'll get to it.
- 7:12What is your favorite kind of Batman? Oh ah hmm, that's a
- 7:16good like. I just got so much love and affection for the Tim Burton
- 7:20Batman movies obviously, you know, nostalgia and everything. They're the ones I
- 7:25grew up on, especially Batman Returns. I feel like that's the better of
- 7:28the two. See, I grew up in I grew up in the campy
- 7:30ones. A shoemaker. Oh that's good campy, yeah yeah. And I
- 7:35look back now and I'm like, I know these are poorly not poorly made.
- 7:40They're not poorly makers. I've designed to sell fucking toys and shit and
- 7:43that's exactly what they did, right And did they ever some of that one?
- 7:48Long live the days McDonald's had good ship in the happy meals? Right
- 7:53yeah? Right? No, A vivid memory of still having that two face
- 7:57cup. You know, it was my favorite cup when I was d all
- 8:01four, still on my fridge in the back of the garage. I still
- 8:03bust about occasionally. You don't say, oh awesome, I could never get
- 8:07all. That's what I want to do with the nerd Daddy YouTube channel.
- 8:09Excuse I managed to monetize it. And I'm just like, I want to
- 8:11start doing videos focusing on like just cool nostalgia shit like that, like the
- 8:15do you remember the the They had the Flintstones ones as well, all the
- 8:18Flintstones ones, the glass glasses, Oh really, I don't remember those ones.
- 8:22No, do you remember the the space space the NBA big giant cups
- 8:28from macas where you pour the drink into it and it would make the logos
- 8:30of the basketball teams appear. Oh is that right? Well, yeah,
- 8:33nineties days of like color changing and hypercolor T shirts and all that sort of
- 8:37stuff. Yeah, and the nineties logos of the NBA were the best.
- 8:41Anyone says, like everyone loved the Hornet's logo. Well, yeah, I'm
- 8:46not much of a sports guy. I like my sports entertaining, as we
- 8:50know for doing thed w But yeah, I'll take your word for it.
- 8:52The nineties were the best for wrestling, the best for NBA, the best
- 8:56for everything that's for Simpsons, they were the best for a lot of things.
- 9:00Yes, obviously we are putting our old man caps on right now.
- 9:01I complain about that. But to this episode, you said you didn't like
- 9:05it, that you didn't like it, or you're sick of reviewing it.
- 9:07Look, I I'm wondering if I'm going to contradict previous podcasts that I've made
- 9:15about this episode. But I don't think I was gonna interject there. I
- 9:18don't think you can contradict because I feel like your tastes change over time.
- 9:24Yeah, so Guy and I go back and revisit episodes from the first ten
- 9:26seasons that he wasn't around for when we originally did the show, when I
- 9:28did it with Mitch, and my opinions on some episodes completely changed because I've
- 9:33either become married since or had a kid since, and it's just your taste
- 9:37change. It doesn't mean that you're going against what you said before. It's
- 9:41just you're a different person now, so you're watching it differently. Yeah,
- 9:43that's a good point, But I mean also having said that, I think
- 9:46I reviewed these episodes like two and three years ago, so I don't know
- 9:50how much has changed. But look, I think maybe on this viewing,
- 9:52I was a little bit more forgiving of it. I guess I knew what
- 9:56I was in for and what I was my expectations were sort of all already
- 10:00sort of at a set level, but I still came away from it feeling
- 10:03flat, and you know, look, best you can hope for in this
- 10:07sort of like there's a handful of good jokes, but ultimately I just sort
- 10:11of felt like, what was the point of that? And I feel like
- 10:13even the Simpsons were asking themselves at several points in this episode, what was
- 10:18the point of that? And Yeah, if the show itself is asking that,
- 10:22yeah, then you as the audience are like well, you know,
- 10:24fuck me. I guess that's usually worry. Can we swear on the show?
- 10:26I keep forgetting you can see whatever you want except for the sea bumb
- 10:30We don't like the sea bomb in this show. Ah, that's too crass
- 10:33that This is the thing. I quite often come out of these trilogy episodes
- 10:37like what you're just saying there where it's just kind of thinking of it's kind
- 10:41of the thought of, well, what was the point of watching this?
- 10:43Like, you know the episodes I say, Cannon, they're not really canon
- 10:48anymore. They're all in a vacuum. It's just you know, entertain me
- 10:50for twenty two minutes. That's sort of mentality ethic. Was I entertained?
- 10:54You can't really worry about cottonnuity anymore. I mean when I went to dinner
- 10:56with Matt, he was just like for cottonuity. He went on this ten
- 11:00minute spielbo why cottnuwity doesn't matter? And I'm like, okay, so I
- 11:03will never bring that weight up again every in your presents, But so continuity
- 11:09doesn't really matter anyone. Sometimes I just can't help myself, Like, for
- 11:11example, last week on the show, you had Millhouse's parents with Millhouse together
- 11:16again. I was like, hang on, So they got back together in
- 11:20a last season, but there's been no mention of it since the last time
- 11:24we saw them. She found Marge's bra in her room and accused Kirk of
- 11:28cheating, and then that was it. And I was like, there was
- 11:30no resolution to that story, but they're still together. And then the big
- 11:33one for me that's really annoyed me in recent times is how Bart found Nelson's
- 11:39dad. And I loved how Nelson's dad returned and it was like, okay,
- 11:41cool, a new direction for the Nelson character, you know. And
- 11:45then there's been no mention of his father since it's back to him living alone
- 11:48with his single strip of mother, and I'm just like, how do you
- 11:52bring in a character like that and changed the felt like the landscape of the
- 11:56character like a new direction. He's in a loving family now, and then
- 12:00you just never mentioned it again. I'm like, what is this now?
- 12:03That's the thing with the whole continuity argument, and I get and I do
- 12:07sympathize with the Simpsons writers and whatever, because you still have to write a
- 12:11show that feels relevant to the time and whatever, and doing that uticulturally things
- 12:16you do have to kind of ignore the continuity of earlier episodes. But it's
- 12:20also that thing where they're trying to have it both ways, right, like
- 12:22continuity it doesn't matter until it does. That's the sort of philosophy. And
- 12:28you know, and like, look, these trilogy episodes, I do give
- 12:31a little bit more leeway because you know, they like the Treehouse of Horror,
- 12:35they're just a bit of fantasy. Let's see the Simpsons, cous players,
- 12:37some other characters, and how do we simpsonsize this story? And yeah,
- 12:43I guess that's my main problem with these ones is that aside from the
- 12:46Count of Monte Cristo, they really didn't for the other two, Like it
- 12:50wasn't a solid idea for either of them, I don't think, And even
- 12:54the Count of Monte Cristo one, I think I spent too much time with
- 12:58stupid, pointless jokes and not enough time sort of honoring that story. Really,
- 13:01I think a lot of the time too with these trilogy ones, and
- 13:05that if you don't understand the source material, you don't get the gagsy and
- 13:09they just fall flat. You don't know the story, the Monte Cristo story,
- 13:13then you'd be like, what is going on here, Like, as
- 13:16a kid, I'm watch just going what is this? What is this shit?
- 13:18Yeah? Well, yeah, That's where I embarrassingly admit as well that
- 13:22even reviewing this for a third time on a podcast, I still haven't gone
- 13:26and read the book, seen any screen adaptations of this at all. I
- 13:31still have no real familiarity with the Monte Cristo story. What about that.
- 13:35You've seen Revenge of the Nerds, right, the films? Yeah, that
- 13:37has absolutely nothing to do with what happened here though, and probably better because
- 13:43of that. That movie does not hold up from a comedy perspective or just
- 13:48from a what's acceptable today for women's standards. I think it just failed on
- 13:56all fronts. Like I my ex girlfriend at the time, who was like,
- 14:00this is my favorite childhood movie. Yeah, let's watch it. We
- 14:01were both like, oh, okay, that just happened, you know.
- 14:07Yeah, I don't know. I haven't got back and visit for a long
- 14:09time. I remember joining them as a kid. I didn't mind the second
- 14:11segment though, I think overall, I think I enjoyed Revenge of the Geeks
- 14:15the most. But butman beginns wasn't too bad either. I'm willing to except
- 14:20that you didn't like them. But I liked the idea of Millhouse having the
- 14:22bully arm that the what was it? What was the actual name for it?
- 14:26They had it, they wrote it down somewhere. God, that should
- 14:28be in a trivia, shouldn't it the get back a ratura. It was
- 14:33a get back of something, wasn't it? Yeah, get back in Aida?
- 14:37Yeah? I like that. And again this also felt like it could
- 14:41have been a trius of horror story to an extent if it was more absolutely,
- 14:43if it was like the way he was getting back at the people was
- 14:46resulting in them being killed or something. You know, Yeah, I guess
- 14:50it's maybe it's the problem of the whole three episode, three segment story format
- 14:54thing is that I don't think this segment or this idea got enough time to
- 15:00to flesh out and make that turn feel justified. It was just like,
- 15:05at least it goes, oh, you fix the problem, and then Millhouse
- 15:07is like, I'm now mad with power. It just it turned on a
- 15:09dime, and like it really just felt like we were going through the motions
- 15:13on that one a bit too much. Like I think I agree, I
- 15:16think it's like probably joke wise the strongest. I guess I don't know.
- 15:20It was really short though, Like I think it only got like five minutes
- 15:24or something. I did like the puns in Batman begins. Yeah, the
- 15:31serpent and whatnot. That's the that's the Batman. I like the campiness.
- 15:33You know, I'm all about campy Batman. I'm I've said this time and
- 15:37time ago on the podcast. People are sick of hearing me say. I'm
- 15:39just I'm done with dark Batman. I'm just that it was. It was
- 15:43great for the trilogy, but every Batman since has just tried to copy the
- 15:46formula, and every superhero film in general has tried to copy that formula,
- 15:50especially in DC. And I'm just like, ough, can we just go
- 15:52back to having fun again? Why doesn't Batman dance anymore? Yeah, Jesus
- 15:58Christ, Look, it's nothing superhero like. The DC films aren't fun.
- 16:03No, what do you think of the Robert Pattinson Batman? Though? The
- 16:04Matt Reeves one I got halfway through and fell asleep. You don't say,
- 16:10oh, I really liked that one, Like, although I watched it on
- 16:14a plane, and I feel like when you're on a plane, your tolerance
- 16:17of crap is goes a lot higher, so I'm beling to give it that.
- 16:21But yeah, not that it was bad. I think maybe it was
- 16:22just tig because you know when you're when you're a daddy, you and you
- 16:26get time to watch movies late at night, so I'm usually half asleep,
- 16:29so I try to watch the episodes now when I'm going to do reviews once
- 16:33I've taking the kids a day. Yeah, fresh in the morning. I'm
- 16:34feeling cherry ripe because I used to watch them at night and next day I
- 16:37was like, worst episode ever. And then I'd like, rewatch it that
- 16:41afternoon and go not so much the worst episode ever. Yeah, it's funny
- 16:47how that. Yeah, the time of day couldn't impact such a thing,
- 16:48but it really can. Yeah, that's why Guy like enjoy I said it
- 16:52Guy, because Guy was getting just like this was terrible. This was terrible.
- 16:56I was like, when did you watch this? He's like, like
- 16:57eleven o'clock last night. I'm like, dude, don't watch it before you
- 17:02get to bed, Like you're too tired and grumpy. You're an old man.
- 17:06No, that's it. And I mean in the early days of the
- 17:07podcast before twenty twenty, where the thing happened, like we used to always
- 17:12watch it together in a group, and because, like especially with comedies,
- 17:18I find that people are more inclined to actually laugh when they're in a group
- 17:21of people, And I felt like watching the episodes like that gave especially the
- 17:26newer ones, the best chance possible, because yeah, if you're just watching
- 17:30Yeah, the New Ones by yourself, it's late at No, you're just
- 17:32cramming before the podcast tomorrow. Yeah, you're likely to be in a bad
- 17:34mood. But yeah's have a couple of friends over poor some nice soda pop
- 17:38and yeah, have some popcorn. It's a yeah, it's a better time.
- 17:41But having said that, some of the episodes still can put you in
- 17:47a bad mood, even with all the best circumstances. I've only had two
- 17:51or three so far that made me actually angry, And obviously this is a
- 17:56podcast be well away because I tore them to shreds. Do you think,
- 17:59well, do you think maybe the way you did your show back in the
- 18:00original run, with the three episodes like the Golden Ear more middle tier than
- 18:07Lady Seasons? Do you think doing it like that gave the teen era and
- 18:12the latter ones less of a chance of you enjoying them because you had a
- 18:15direct comparison to an older episode, so you're comparing it to the best of
- 18:19the best. Because I feel like, because we've been doing them in chronological
- 18:23order, we're reviewing all these episodes together like the sort of the same season
- 18:27altogether. I don't think they come across as bad. But if I was
- 18:30backing them up with say, Homer the Heretic and the this one, I'd
- 18:33be like, oh my god, why can't I be more like this?
- 18:36So do you think because you did it like that, you dislike these ones
- 18:40more because you were sort of comparing them as opposed to just watching them all
- 18:44watching season eighteen in a vacuum. Yeah, well, look for the first
- 18:47twenty episode, sorry for the first twenty episodes of the podcast, we were
- 18:52reviewing them Classic Teens, new and we found that our energy levels, which
- 18:56are so bad at the end of the night because like it's long process recording
- 19:00the podcast like that, and then yeah, we were tired. We were
- 19:04kind of over it by the time that the hd ERA episode would roll around.
- 19:08So yeah, very early on we made the decision, Okay, we've
- 19:11got to start with the new ones and end good, because yeah, it
- 19:14would always be like that, we'd be bitching about the new one, especially
- 19:18in comparison to the fucking excellent episode that we watched at the start of the
- 19:22evening. So yeah, we started, did you watch watch one review it,
- 19:26watch one review it, watch one review it. Okay, so you
- 19:30didn't watch them all beforehand then review them, Okay, I see. Yeah.
- 19:33Yeah, because as well, like with the HD and teens, like
- 19:37people generally have more familiar with the teens, but like it would have a
- 19:40thing that if we did watch them in a cluster and then review them,
- 19:42that like we'd conflate and like think some things were from an episode and they
- 19:47were actually from a different one. So yeah, we had to separate them
- 19:49as well. Like, and I think that's the beauty with all these Simpsons
- 19:53podcasts is like we've all each got our different methodology of doing things and like
- 19:59reviewing them. And this is just the approach that I wanted to take,
- 20:02is to be able to sort of directly compare. Is like not coming in
- 20:04on the foot of like New Simpsons is bad or anything. It's just like,
- 20:07okay, what's different about it? And like we having the three episodes
- 20:12as a way to directly compare and starting with the new one like was really
- 20:15helpful in that way because we'd be able to give the new ones a lot
- 20:21more credit as well, and like yeah not like not just bitch out it
- 20:27instantly, and we'd have a good starting place with the HD one to be
- 20:32able to go, yeah, nothing's right with me, and then like try
- 20:36to figure out out and then by the time we get to the classic it's
- 20:37like, oh, I've just it's just occurred to me, what's different here
- 20:41because we've watched the classic era one. Yeah, my favorite what'll be your
- 20:47favorite moments from the episode, Davis, mister, Ah, my favorite moments?
- 20:53My favorite moments. Look, I think yeah, coming from the the
- 21:00Millhouse for Revenge, I like I loved the get back and eight to all
- 21:03the different settings that it had, wasn't it. Yeah? Yeah? And
- 21:07I thought that was you know, we talk about the comedy rule of three,
- 21:11and you know, all the different settings that this had. This was
- 21:12like a comedy rule of fifteen or something like that. Like, I really
- 21:17liked the escalation on the jokes where it started out with your standard school yard
- 21:19bullying stuff, wedge purple purple noogies, pink bellies, but then to progress
- 21:26wet Willie, dry Willie, and go all the way to kidney stoning,
- 21:30nasty Jackson and genital hospital. I am glad I never got a genital hospital
- 21:33as a kid. I was gonna say, how many of the ease you
- 21:36think you actually had done to you? Or were you the bully? Oh
- 21:40no, I was the youngest of three boys. I definitely had everything before
- 21:42kidney stoning. I wasn't necessarily bullied. I wasn't bullied physically. I was
- 21:51bullied mentally because I was like the fat it at school. So I was
- 21:52just all right. I was just like I've said on I was referred to
- 21:56as titties all the time. Yeah, many of per pulling uple in my
- 22:00time as well. Yeah, yeah, I know all too well. I
- 22:03enjoyed the French snare. Yeah. So I go back and forth on the
- 22:11French jokes in this one because they're so like surface level, but they are
- 22:15kind of funny, like especially if you do have a basic knowledge of French
- 22:18language, like in the prison. Instead of going ooh la la Homer guys
- 22:23uder the yeah, and that's just caught me off. God damn, that's
- 22:27good. But the snare like it's the most basic of stereotypes. But that's
- 22:33what the show is, you know, And I think it's the kind of
- 22:36thing that even French people just have to laugh at, right, you could
- 22:37have a sense of humor about these kind of things. But it reminds me
- 22:40what was the It was a trilogy of error where they go she goes to
- 22:45the French school, yeah, and they all like laugh and then they go
- 22:48no, no, no. He's like, oh yeah. I also enjoyed
- 22:55Homer saying how deep is this tunnel and he's fall straight at the wall.
- 22:59Yeah, birds spent thirty years digging this tunnel. It's like a brick deep.
- 23:02Yeah. But then again the extended falling joke where Home is falling for
- 23:07ages and then when he crawls back up the tower via the river as well,
- 23:11and then just like immediately drops straight back in, and then they do
- 23:15that a couple of times, and then Homer just goes, so, how's
- 23:18it going, And then Burns is like, oh, like that one to
- 23:22me was just ah, you really just I just felt like it was just
- 23:27yeah, to use a term for a worst episode. Ever, this is
- 23:32like extra beat alarm, where yeah, you had the joke the good falling,
- 23:34Like, oh, that was a surprise, didn't see that coming,
- 23:37and then you just dragged it out so long. It reminds me kind of
- 23:41these Home has been known in the past to repeatedly make the same mistake over
- 23:45and over again. Yeah that's true. Yeah, I don't know. Maybe
- 23:48it's just a taste thing, but yeah, this, yeah, I did
- 23:52not think this was I was trying to remember a French thing, Bond.
- 23:55This was not Bond. I also really enjoyed the Diddler. I thought,
- 24:00really, I thought the Diddler was such a funny name. It's like I
- 24:06was, like, this is worth it just for the segment of lanes.
- 24:07If I come up with the word the didler, we have to write a
- 24:08segment around the diddler. Jesus like, because there isn't diddler like a word
- 24:14for a pedophile. But it's a it's a joke, yeah, I know.
- 24:18But like, especially with Flanders and I know the connection with religion and
- 24:22everything. It was just one of those color tug sort of jokes for me.
- 24:26Oh but it's one of those jokes where I think it's perfect for Simpsons
- 24:30because it flies under the radar for kids. But as an you're like,
- 24:33fuck, I you say that into a kids show. Yeah, that was
- 24:37very surprising. But another one that it's like blink and you'll miss it.
- 24:40You probably would have missed it, but here we are reviewing and taking down
- 24:45scrupulous note taking. Yeah, but I was a kid watching this one.
- 24:48I just thought the Diddler was a funny name because as a kid, I
- 24:51think it's just the Flanders version of the Riddler. Yeah, so he said
- 24:55faced value. Yeah, like it's very cleverly put put together with the pieces
- 25:00like that, but it is just one that makes me I don't want to
- 25:02think of Flanders in that way. Oh well it's a super villain, yeah
- 25:07I suppose. Yeah, there we go, he's meant to be the villain.
- 25:10Next question, you there eating the beast. Already it is time for

- 26:37community, you name it, we've got it. All right, guys,
- 26:40thank you again for your sport. Like I said, now, Alliott jair
- 26:42O'Neil, let's get into some trivia questions. Oh okay, uh, what
- 26:48are the four satellite radio stations that the family want to listen to? I've
- 26:52got leases because I'm My first question was Chill Thunder I'm pretty sure how it
- 26:56puts on chill Thunder White? Is that right? Yep? There we go.
- 26:57We got two other four. I don't know the other two. What
- 27:00were they? Cool Waves and Neon Breeze. Neon Breeze. So this is
- 27:04kind of nostalgic in the sense that actually, no, we'll get to all
- 27:07that when they do the full in death review. All right, So my
- 27:10next question for you would be what was the worst torture of all that Carl
- 27:14mentions that. Carl mentions, well, the worst of all except except for
- 27:19and then he says something else. Yeah, well, the worst torture of
- 27:22all is not knowing and the rat helmet, the rat helmets, yes,
- 27:26and now going to good night sleep. You've got a nine am rat helmet.
- 27:30Sometimes you read things and it's like the way they torture people in medieval
- 27:33time. You're like, people did this to people? What the oh?
- 27:37Yeah no? Growing up, you know one of my favorite bands, Iron
- 27:41Maiden, It's like, what is an Iron Maiden? Oh? God?
- 27:44Yeah, not good? Oh? What were they seeing at the opera house?
- 27:49In Bartman begins What were they seeing? Ah, it's right there?
- 27:56Not what is it? Trick question that didn't say just I remember this.
- 28:00I'm thinking of the scene where they're walking out of the Opperao they say that
- 28:03not many kids have a parents that can afford them to take them to the
- 28:07opera every single night. My final question for you will be actually, ah,
- 28:12this is actually I put in instead of putting the trivia, put this
- 28:15in my trivia sort of should have been my favorite moments I enjoyed the line
- 28:18of Millhouse saying having a weapon at school has made things awesome. Yeah.
- 28:25Yeah, that was one where it was like, yeah, Simpson's making a
- 28:27joke on society. That was okay, Yeah that was good. But yeah,
- 28:32my last tribute actually is also pertaining to Millhouse and that segment. Why
- 28:37was he the one who was deemed qualified to wield the get back in eighta?
- 28:42Um? What did he do that qualified him most for it? Did
- 28:45he have like coordination or something? Yeah, they said all it needs is
- 28:49a basic level of coordination and all the odes wan is that the answer?
- 28:55No, Millhouse said is a judgling care Yeah, juggle at camp. I
- 29:00was like, I'm like, like that, there's something now I'm missing,
- 29:03something like a toup of your face. Yeah. I do love this joke
- 29:07because it doesn't he didn't juggle at all or say he was good at juggling.
- 29:10He just said he took it at camp. Like there was no skills
- 29:14proven demonstrably. It's just I took juggling at camp. Did you ever go
- 29:18to a camp, like a themed camp, not school camp, just a
- 29:22theme camp, like juggling camp or something like that. No, not really,
- 29:26I was just the kind of kid that in my spare time wanted to
- 29:30be in front of the TV with video games or with friends in with video
- 29:33games and sort of stuff like that. I wasn't never inclined for sort of
- 29:37scouts or any of those like extracurricular camping activities. Either I was a home
- 29:42kid. I just loved being home, or I had like one or two
- 29:45free friend's house where like they were like my safe spaces, but like anywhere
- 29:48else I felt out of my comfort zone. I'd have like panic attacks.
- 29:52I couldn't even do school camps, man, I'd have like panic attacks.
- 29:53I just couldn't go to them. I just have a fear like sleeping out
- 29:56at a place I wasn't comfortable with, but like they had like two or
- 29:59three friends, and like my NaN's place in like one of my uncle's places.
- 30:02Anywhere else, No no deal. Yeah. Wow, Like I had
- 30:06a bit of that early on in my childhood, and like my family still
- 30:10make fun of me and like quoted off and it's almost a meme in our
- 30:12household to go when I was I don't know, I think I was only
- 30:15a four or something, but I just started crying and I was like I
- 30:18want to go back to Elliott's house, and I'd still like quote in my
- 30:22family, I wet the bed till I was like twelve, So I think
- 30:27that played a partner as well. I was like the fear of wetting the
- 30:30bed at someone else's house. Yeah, sure, I've imagine being that kid
- 30:33had pissed a bed at like a fucking Grade five slumber party. Yeah,
- 30:37there's worse thing to be called. I'm starting to appreciate my family now.
- 30:41Won't forget my brother's for all the purple nurples and nasty Jackson's. But still,
- 30:45I mean, at least as Billy Madison taughtoise, you're not cool unless
- 30:48you peat your parts. Yeah, that's it. That's it, all right.
- 30:52So the original air date of Revenge is a Dish Best Sir three Times
- 30:56was January twenty eighth, two thousand and seven. It was written by A.
- 31:00H. Cohen and directed by Michael Polsino. There was no chalk gag,
- 31:03but there was a couch gag. It's where the Simpsons are infants who
- 31:06crawled to the couch whilst Twinker Twink a Little Stars playing in the background.
- 31:08After reaching the couch, they grew up to their normal ages, except Maggie
- 31:12just remains a baby as per usual. So the episode kicks off with the
- 31:15family apparently they're driving to the airport. I don't remember hearing Homer say that,
- 31:19but apparently he did. Yeah. Well that at the end he goes
- 31:23like, we may have missed out flight to Hawaii. Yeah, that should
- 31:26have been a trivia question, yeah, because it was like on the on
- 31:30the wiki page here it says Miami. Oh really, I wrote Hawaii.
- 31:34It's so confusing, yeah, saying family vacation. They're going on a family
- 31:40drive, you know, with the satellite radio. Yeah. But as I
- 31:42was saying earlier, this was kind of like nostalgia because remember when satellite radio
- 31:45was just sort of coming to the into the fold and it's like you could
- 31:48listen to like a themed channel. It's like, WHOA, so cool man.
- 31:55No. One of my big things for that was the introduction of double
- 31:57J. And it's like, yes, finally triple J for me. Yeah,
- 32:01old person And now even that it's just like the double J's like we
- 32:07need something older version of that for me. Now. Yeah, we need
- 32:09to go to J and then go to No J and then yeah, the
- 32:14sing the songs that were on Double J. I saw there's those songs that
- 32:16were originally on Triple J when Double J started are now in Double J,
- 32:20and Double J's pushed out the songs that I liked. But I haven't listened
- 32:23to the radio in so long, man. I listened, Oh, I
- 32:28like my sport so like I listened to SEM, which is like the local
- 32:30Melbourne sports radio station. So when the footy season's on what we call AFL,
- 32:35you your footy in Sydney's NRL. But you know, when the footy
- 32:37season's on that or quick it or whatever, just more talk back stuff.
- 32:42But I never listened to music on the radio anymore. I'm mostly either podcasts
- 32:45or talk back radio. Yeah, I've found, yeah that I don't really
- 32:51I've never really been a fan of radio anyway, because I get pretty frustrated,
- 32:55Like I'm a big music fan, and I just sort of get frustrated
- 32:59at the idea of hearing the same sort of songs like more than ten times,
- 33:02like in a small space of time. And I generally like to listen
- 33:06to whole albums anyway, just as my music tastes. And yeah, certainly
- 33:12as it's been easy to connect devices to my car, which is where I
- 33:15would have done most of my radio listening. Yeah. Through that time,
- 33:20I've gotten more into podcasts, which is still funny to my dad, who
- 33:22was like a lifelong talkback radio fan and as a kid, I'd be like,
- 33:27did we listen to this shit? Now I'm making podcasts, you know,
- 33:30which is essentially Elliott he wants to get clean about the clouds fully fully.
- 33:37Uh. But yeah, so like even sometimes I'll chuck on the radio
- 33:42and then just quickly switch back to yeah, Spotify or my podcast at because
- 33:45yeah, that's what I do most of my listening on. Anyway, I
- 33:49just I sort of just get frustrated with the radio format anyway. Yeah.
- 33:52Well see, so I started off in radio and I very quickly realized this
- 33:55is not for me. You know, basically with Australian radio, you have
- 34:00to conform to a certain style, a certain sound of voice. They all
- 34:05talk like this. They're trying to Hamish and Andy. It's like, we're
- 34:08so excited to be here, and I'm like, you're not really excited like
- 34:12once you're working radio, Like, oh, these guys aren't getting paid much
- 34:15at all. They don't actually like anything they're saying. It's all bullshit.
- 34:17They're not actually anything like their personalities. But I never forget Do you know
- 34:22Eddie McGuire, he's a big Yeah, yes, you know ed McGuire.
- 34:24Right, I'll never forget right. I met him when I was about twelve,
- 34:27and it's a photo of me with Eddie. He was doing his speech
- 34:29just like Q and a thing at my and my mum's work when she was
- 34:31working here in Geelong at the place called Buckley's. And I remember he said
- 34:35to me. I said to him, how do you get a job in
- 34:37radio? I remember saying this, man. I remember he said to me,
- 34:39he said, buddy, it's not worth getting a job in radio unless
- 34:43you're somebody outside of radio, otherwise you're never making any money. And I
- 34:46was like, how fucking right was he? Yeah, that's brutal and true.
- 34:51He said some wrong things in the past, but you can quote him
- 34:53on that one. That's painfully accurate. Yes, if you're not a TV
- 34:57personality, don't even bother with radio. Yeah, no, because it's weird
- 35:01because like I see things like Hughsey has one of the biggest radio shows,
- 35:05and it's like, surely you're making enough money, dude, why are you
- 35:08hogging the airwaves from Yeah, another local talent who could probably use the push.
- 35:13But it's just like no, because no one had listened to the radio
- 35:15for hughs He wasn't on it, you know. Is he still one of
- 35:19the biggest radio shows US. I wouldn't have a clue. Like I said,
- 35:22don't listen to a lot of radio thinking. I am going off billboards
- 35:24that I've seen in the past. I've never got the whole Husy thing.
- 35:30You know, he's very successful what he does, but we quite often I'm
- 35:32making fun of Hughsey on this show here for oh, one of Australia's premier
- 35:38entertainers. You know. It started with the Snakes Alive bit and multimillions were
- 35:43made off the back of that. Have you seen guy got me onto this
- 35:47quick little side. We'll get back to the episode in a second. But
- 35:51the meme of someone holding out three packets of the back of cigarettes that look
- 35:53like Husy. So I am googling this, immediately googles Hughsey cigarette packet meme.
- 36:00Oh my god, it's true. So yeah, yeah, it's the
- 36:05two like if you if you're aware of cigarette packets anyway, Yeah, it's
- 36:08the two like smoking causes blindness, and then one of the having a hard
- 36:15time looking at this and talking at the same time, and the smoking fox
- 36:17with your teeth sing, and yeah, that is it's so weird, Like
- 36:23yeah, if you hagle it as well, do you think of that?
- 36:29Just I'm surprised anyone had three packets of cigarettes to look at it. It's
- 36:32like, yeah, I haven't smoked in almost a decade now. My brothers
- 36:36asked me to pick up some packets when I was going to hang out with
- 36:38them a couple of weeks ago. It was like, yeah, just three
- 36:40packets. Yeah, no worries it. It's like one hundred and fifty dollars.
- 36:45Yeah, my uncle's recently quit smoking, right, my uncle and his
- 36:50partner and it was about three years ago and like a year they saved like
- 36:53forty to fifty grand Yeah, it's mental, right, just yeah, like
- 37:01just long going of the days when they were like because I remember when I
- 37:05was first turning eighteen, first started going to the pubs, it was like
- 37:07that was then cigarettes were like jumping into the double digits dollars and now,
- 37:13like I know, it's not the same for a lot of your international listeners
- 37:16that cigarettes haven't got the tax like that Australians have. But the shit,
- 37:22I don't know. Maybe it's a good thing, but yeah, one hundred
- 37:23percent is a good thing. I mean, I've never smoked in my life.
- 37:27Apparently Nicholas just smoked when she drank, but yeah, I just I
- 37:30don't know. I've see people smoking down I'm like, still doing that,
- 37:34huh cool. Yeah, I feel smoke. It's weird listeners like who you
- 37:37are in Australia. Maybe I'm wrong, but I feel like it's hard to
- 37:40find somebody smoking now. It's like we hired them in a corner somewhere.
- 37:45Absolutely. No. I was at the markets the other day and this old
- 37:47couple started lighting. A couple up and like a couple of parents like walked
- 37:52up to them immediately like what are you doing? There's children around here.
- 37:55Yeah, And I think that's the right mentality. We should be like what
- 38:00are you doing? Like that's fine if you want to do it so bit,
- 38:02but don't do it near me. Yeah. And then yeah, vapes
- 38:06briefently were like, oh, it's not cigarettes, and then they found out
- 38:08yes, the second hand vape is just as bad. So and you go
- 38:13off off into the dark corner with the smokers. Yeah, and we've banned
- 38:15you as well. Yeah. But yeah, getting back to two chill funder
- 38:22Light. Yeah, so I don't know how we got to all that conversation
- 38:25after just talking about I was like commercials and shit on radio. Yeah.
- 38:30But but basically the rich textan cuts off the Simpsons, Homer gets really angry,
- 38:34we get a really lame joke about the war in Iraq. No,
- 38:37revenge doesn't get anybody anywhere. Why are the US still in Iraq? I'm
- 38:40like, oh God, are we still talking about this? Okay? Yeah,
- 38:44and then Marge tells the first Revenge story and I was like, oh,
- 38:46it's one of these ones. It was just such a really contrived setup
- 38:52as well as like you know, Homer, revenge doesn't work out well for
- 38:54everybody. How about this story? It's like, here we go. It
- 38:59kind of from me of you know, this wasn't a trilogy story, but
- 39:02as a trilogy concept. It was when they did the clip show with the
- 39:06love stories, you remember, oh yeah yeah, and they said all just
- 39:09sort of sitting in around the kitchen table telling these really contrived remember when this
- 39:14happened? Yeah, I mean, what would you rather this or a clip
- 39:17show. At least I didn't do clip shows anymore. Nah, there's one
- 39:21hundred percent. It's funny, like because on the Simpsons Index, despite what
- 39:24we were saying, I was saying before, we do rank the episodes and
- 39:27sort of try build a guide of like watching the Simpsons and you know,
- 39:30general sort of recommendations and all that sort of thing. But yeah, averaging
- 39:34out all of our scores, season six would have been our top ranked season
- 39:37if it wasn't for that episode. That episode we hated so much that it
- 39:42put it down into third place under five and seven really seven and five.
- 39:45Reviewing it in twenty twenty three, though, you've got to give it some
- 39:49slap because this is back in the day when clip shows were a thing.
- 39:52Did i't do clip shows anymore? But like, even like Friends was the
- 39:55biggest show on television that was still doing clip shows, you know, y
- 40:00right. Yeah. I revisited Malcolm in the Middle not too long ago as
- 40:02well, and still surprised because, yeah, that's like a relatively late sitcom,
- 40:07you know, no camped laughter and all that, and it was like,
- 40:08yeah, that still had four like clip shows in it. That's odd.
- 40:10Yeah, Yeah, clip shows are not a thing. Anymore. But
- 40:14I guess I can see why you would find it annoying now in twenty twenty
- 40:17three, But in nineteen ninety four or five, whenever that episode air lot
- 40:22season six, it probably wouldn't have been seen as annoying as what we would
- 40:25see it as now. Yeah, not as bad, And certainly with the
- 40:29way we consume television and you know, and repeats and sort of things like
- 40:32that, I guess our main problem with that one was that it was just
- 40:36telling truncated versions of these episodes and like cutting out some of the best material
- 40:40out of them, whereas like even something like gump Rost like it did a
- 40:45bit more with the setup and connective tissue like hated gump Roast hated it.
- 40:51Yeah, oh no not. I'm only defending that part of it. I'm
- 40:53not defending the actual episode. And it's like there is a good reason why
- 40:57that is. The last clip show was written by Dan Castlen, Is that
- 41:01right, that one? Yeah? Yeah, him and Deabla Custa. Yeah.
- 41:05They put their names on a few episodes, yeah, especially more as
- 41:08the series went on. But then we get the obviously the first story here.
- 41:12So the first segment was officially called the count of Monty Fatso. But
- 41:16basically it's just, you know, the revenge. So Moe is the Sillia
- 41:20to like me, Beth Mimosa's trying to steal the wife of Homer in this
- 41:23story, and he does. I did like the twist at the end though,
- 41:28essentially where they're like, pamo, we need It was like it's been
- 41:31five years and it's like, yeah, but I'm still I was I was
- 41:36your dad. You've been going for five years. We forgotten to be you,
- 41:38fat boy. Yeah no, And I like the joke. It's just
- 41:43like, well, you know, then I had to get what was it.
- 41:46Yeah, I had to hire a lot of contractors to build this thing,
- 41:49and then I had to get revenge on them at certain points. And
- 41:52yeah, I did enjoy that twist as well, and putting the like because
- 41:55I feel like the way these sort of things go, especially when Simpson's through
- 42:00these tales where Moe is houning in on Marge, it's always like, yeah,
- 42:04he's just disregarded at the first available opportunity that he was actually their loving
- 42:07father, because yeah, their actual father was gone for five years. I
- 42:13did find the mode triplet Maggie's a bit unsettling but whatever, the problem with
- 42:16these trilogy episodes too, is that when they have an episode involving like margin
- 42:21Homer, it usually is Mo the one that's used as the person who's trying
- 42:23to get in between them, because they even did it in the Wetter Stories
- 42:28Ever told as well, where it was Moe trying to get like Homer drunk
- 42:31on the ship, remember that one? Yeah? Yeah, and then you
- 42:35got the Megbeth parody? Was that Mo? And that was Mo? And
- 42:38that wasn't then Butch trying to get revenge on Mo. Wasn't he? Oh
- 42:42yeah, there we go another revenge story, but was probably told in the
- 42:45History episode or something. I don't know. Yeah, so like that,
- 42:47I don't know, just it says seems like they keep going back to Mow
- 42:51all the time. Probably mean we have I mean we have Peggy fur maybe
- 42:58maybe and the luckiest wife in the entire sixteenth this moll let us kiss with
- 43:12the tongues. Let us kiss with the tongues as opposed to French guess yeah.
- 43:21And then in that same the Butt and Lisa are like, may we
- 43:24have this? And then Lisa's like, oh, may we have this candy?
- 43:27And then Homer's like may we, may we may we. That gets
- 43:30me, like, because yeah, may we as a French phrase for like
- 43:34yes or obviously or something like that. Yeah, so it's a few of
- 43:37these like clever little French language jokes, Like I like this approach rather than
- 43:42sometimes where they go try to fully like everyone in the cast do whatever accent
- 43:46of the country that they're parenting, Like I forget. We were talking about
- 43:51it on the Treehouse of So you liked the Jack the Ripper one where I
- 43:53wasn't a huge fan because I thought them taking the voice off just got annoying
- 43:55by the Yanks. I'm like, this isn't jokes, this is just them
- 43:59doing funny accents. Yeah. I was just about to bring that up as
- 44:01an example of yeah, an episode I like despite the fact that, yeah,
- 44:05Marge's English accent is hideous in yeah, and yeah, they do it
- 44:10a lot lately, Like there was a recent Treehouse of Horror where they were
- 44:15like doing the Mayan calendar thing and they're all sort of affecting like a Spanish
- 44:20accent. Was that that was truly That was chreuse of horror. That one
- 44:23that was yeah, yeah, yeah, I think it was like the twenty
- 44:27fourth or twenty third or something like that. They all start to blur in
- 44:30the twenties. Yeah, there's another joke coming up in this segment here,
- 44:34which I literally wrote my notes, How has this not already been done in
- 44:36the Simpsons? You've been sentenced to life jokes and you I'm already alive.
- 44:39I was like, Yeah, that's awesome. That's a really funny joken.
- 44:44That's a really good term of phrase. Yeah, yeah, like, how
- 44:46has this not been said before? Like that just seems like golden near Homer
- 44:51gag right, No, that yeah, excellent, playing with the dialogue here,
- 44:54Yeah, I like that. Listen to this latter he wrote, Dear
- 44:59England, how I love your moods and heats for you. I do whatever
- 45:02it takes, especially treason. I didn't write that even if I did love
- 45:08England, I'd play it cool, wait for it to come to me.
- 45:14I sentence you to life, you moron. I'm already alive in prison,
- 45:24pen pen, I'm gonna start now. I didn't mind Mose setting him up
- 45:35as well. This is a letter that I found that Homer had sent,
- 45:37deary England, I love you so much and all like that worked for me.
- 45:40But yeah, then Wigham taking him away was one of these obnoxiously drawn
- 45:45out jokes for me, where Wiggham's doing the police siring himself going near there,
- 45:51and then it goes on and on, and then it zooms in on
- 45:52Wigham and he's still doing it, and then he just goes, oh,
- 45:55I'm gonna stop now, like I think I would have. I wouldn't have
- 45:59hated it if it was just that one shot of him driving off into the
- 46:01distance, but that they did the zoom in and it still went on and
- 46:05then he goes awkward. You know, it just really didn't land. Quite
- 46:09often in recent episodes, we've found they are explaining their jokes more and more
- 46:14often hmmmmm. And it's like, you don't need to explain it. If
- 46:17you don't get it, then just move. It doesn't matter. You know,
- 46:20the people will be they'll get it eventually. You know. That's it.
- 46:22They didn't pause and stop and explain the diddler and like why they're so
- 46:27clever for making those connections. They just said it and it was the twiddling
- 46:30of the fingers as well, like they did. I really hate thinking of
- 46:36flats in that light. But then we get home getting tortured in prison,
- 46:39and I was a big fan of him getting please losing my arm so I
- 46:44can shake my wist and yeah, put this in the Homer Shaking Fist playlist.
- 46:49Yeah, Homer has a friend in the mouse, which he eats as
- 46:52you probably would would you if you were locked in prison and you hadn't been
- 46:54fed, probably like a shitty prison like this, would you resort to eating
- 46:59a mouse or something like that? Could you do it? I don't think
- 47:00I could even kill a mouse, let alone eat it. Yeah, well,
- 47:04I mean lock me in the highest tower of a prison and we'll see
- 47:07what I do. But yeah, it is a hard thought to make.
- 47:10Yeah, like the yeah, especially raw, I feel like that's even worse.
- 47:15Like if there's a way that I can make up like a little prison
- 47:19grill, maybe have a little uh rat shishkebubs or something like George. Yeah,
- 47:27yeah, try sneaking one of those into a cake into a prison.
- 47:30Yeah, he's got a semment here and it's mister Burns. I was getting
- 47:32like a Latin ViBe's here. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, it is very
- 47:37much that. Like, Yeah, when Jafar like dresses up sort of thing,
- 47:39yeah, yeah, and leads him to the cave of wonders, but
- 47:43he's been well, we actually get a bit of like a rape gang here,
- 47:46which I was a little uncomfortable with. So basically he's like, I'm
- 47:50doing this because you know, I'm too old now. I want to go
- 47:53to I've spent thirty years doing it. I wanted to go to good use.
- 47:55And I violated you repeatedly while she slept. And I was like,
- 47:59I'm not sure rip gags a good thing. I'm like, I'm all for
- 48:01the diddler, but like, this is just blatantly saying I raped you while
- 48:04she slept, and I was like, oh shit, yeah, with the
- 48:07deadly you can say there's an element of cleverness about oh, like how they
- 48:09put the joke together, but this is just like, like, all you're
- 48:14relying on is the delivery of Burns and it doesn't say but it's just it's
- 48:16uncomfortable. Nah, it's not cool at all. Yeah, And I mean,
- 48:22on the lesser end of the scale, I also didn't like the mister
- 48:24Burns going oh, you wouldn't have noticed me because you're so self centered.
- 48:29And then Homer's looking in the yellow water is like, oh, hello,
- 48:31there, looking good, and it's like this character hasn't really sort of displayed
- 48:36self centered tendencies. If anything, he was just a good family man and
- 48:39whatever. This is just this comes out of nowhere, and it's not Homer
- 48:43Simpson characteristic either. Like, yeah, it just didn't work for me.
- 48:47I was more disappointed of the fact that they ruined the yellow water gag because
- 48:51obviously that's meant to be a piss, a puddle of piss on the floor.
- 48:53But then Homer comes up through that in the floor and I'm like,
- 48:57oh, so that's water from the ocean. Why is it yellow? Then
- 49:00you've ruined the gag. Oh, yeah, you're right. And how is
- 49:02that water rising up that? Anyway? How's he getting there? It does
- 49:07make sense, how's the water going up? Yeah? But he uses the
- 49:12map to retrieve the buried treasure, eventually finds it, and five years later
- 49:16he's loaded, he's got he's now the he's the count of the town.
- 49:22We then cut to Mo and he's the new dad of the family, and
- 49:24I guess we're supposed to just assume that Mo just became a good dad.
- 49:29Yeah. Well, I like how they don't like explain it before the twist
- 49:32at the end, because yeah, you could go from everything that we saw
- 49:37before, like oh, he's just a creep ward that when Homer gets his
- 49:39revenge, he will have what's coming to him. But then that it's like
- 49:44then done as a pullback and revealed. No, he was like good to
- 49:45these people, and like he gave these kids a father when they didn't have
- 49:49one. Yeah, no, like and I like it when he's like he
- 49:52still hasn't revealed that he's Homer, and he's just this counter of Monte Cristo
- 49:55and he's putting on this party that has invited them to and like get one
- 50:00of these crowd murmured jokes where it's like you know, rubs and cars,
- 50:02and then you just hear one person cut through going I've heard rumors he's mysterious,
- 50:07Like that's just a good line to me. But eventually reveals his identity
- 50:10and they get it when he takes off the mole. Now have you seen
- 50:13the Muppets Most Wanted? Oh yeah, yeah, I've only seen that one
- 50:16once. I'm generally a big Muppet fan, but no, not so much.
- 50:21This is I mean I remember going to the movies to watch it,
- 50:22but then my kids became huge Muppet fans. Thank God, because I love
- 50:25the Muppets as well. And now that's a podcast like to start one day
- 50:30that the Muppet podcast. I've already got it going talking Muppets, got a
- 50:31logo and everything. I just wait for someone to do it with. Don't
- 50:35tempt me, I've got oh. I have deep history with those guys.
- 50:39That's the one. I feel like there's no good Muppets podcast out there.
- 50:44That's the money, mate, Like we could do it. Yeah, we'll
- 50:47talk off pod. This could be a thing. But now I just want
- 50:52to talk about the Muppets. But basically, that whole story is that Constantine
- 50:58is the evil Kermit and he's hut the mole on his face and he slaps
- 51:01one on Chemis's face and everyone thinks that he is Constantine. Yeah. I
- 51:05was just getting vibes up. It's most wanted in this. Yeah. But
- 51:07then we get Homer. Yeah, so your real his identity. He murders
- 51:12mo by put him in the crape and burning him alive and cooking him,
- 51:15and the family just can't believe it. They're all just devastating that you know,
- 51:17you've you've killed my husband and Poppa Moan. Who's gonna take care of
- 51:21the Triplets. Yeah, and yeah, it's kind of a depressing ending you
- 51:24really think about it. Yeah, Like, like I said, I do
- 51:29like that twist and the subversion on the end, but like, I'm also
- 51:32a big fan of Roupe Goldberg machines and this just didn't do it for me.
- 51:36Man, the whole the what do you call it? The Harmless Chair
- 51:39of Relaxation, and then it starts out with like a fish squirting him and
- 51:44then a hanky slapping him, and then a cannon that shoots a spring loaded
- 51:47boot to his crotch, and then yeah, we get the crapes and then
- 51:52out comes the branding him. I was like, oh no, Suzette,
- 51:54So like, yeah, man, I wanted so much more for a Roupe
- 51:59Goldberg masie and this just didn't. It didn't do it for me. And
- 52:01the ending where it gets back to present day and Homas wasn't listening to Marge
- 52:05at all, I was like, that's right, this guy's a dick when
- 52:07when they needing to be Yeah, yeah, that's right, and he's listening
- 52:10to Jamaican beats and doing a probably problematic accent right here. Yeah, because
- 52:15we just reviewed the Wife Aquatic and for the most part home, it's a
- 52:21really good husband, father, and that like he's taken the family to this
- 52:23barnacle bay because he was marched. If we live this childhood memory and he's
- 52:29just doing all this nice shit, and I'm just like, why did he
- 52:32just chop and change with this guy? Yeah, it's clear when when he's
- 52:37a good person, the episodes are better. What do you persists with this
- 52:42version? Yeah, and when it's he's so singlely focused over something just as
- 52:46simple as being cut off like that just to me lends into the hole.
- 52:51Like this episode's premise just feels so contrived. It's just like, oh,
- 52:53whatever, someone cuts him off and that's why he's angry and they're on a
- 52:57car trip like and returning to this is the thing that he's so hell bent
- 53:01on revenge for it. Just yeah, I don't think it's justified, even
- 53:06in our homer like over exaggerating, overly emotional way, like, yeah,
- 53:09this is veering too close to the whole, like jerk ass problem for me?
- 53:15Have you ever been cut off? Though? So many times I live
- 53:20in Sydney, man, Like, I imagine traffic's bad in Melbourne and Geelong
- 53:23too, But holy crap, Oh, shit, man, there's I've got
- 53:27a story that I'm not gonna bother boring you guys with. But Nick and
- 53:30I had a night in Melbourne on Friday and traffic at like five thirty short,
- 53:36long story short. We're staying at this hotel in the Docklands, Melbourne,
- 53:38right, very very busy part of Melbourne, and the key to so
- 53:44it's on a busy ride, a really really busy road where in the middle
- 53:45you can't do a U turn. It's basically you got one road. If
- 53:49we get to the other side, you get to go all the way around
- 53:51the block and come back up the other way again. It's like like a
- 53:52forty minute drive in like pete traffic, just around this block. But this
- 53:55guy thought the apartment was staying at and all his wisdom to lead the key
- 54:00for the apartment at a place across the street and said to park your car
- 54:07there, when really we could have parked our car at the apartment first and
- 54:10walked across the road. So we part our car at this easy mart and
- 54:15then we realized we have to add another forty five minutes to add trip to
- 54:17get to the other side of the road because of the shitty directions that there's
- 54:22a nightmare and you can just see your final destination and like I could fart
- 54:28and the people could smell it. You know, that's how closely you were.
- 54:30Jesus christ. Ah, that's brutal. I was like home with the
- 54:35stick almost just put the keys on the end of this stick. Please,
- 54:42sir. I'm gonna get my revenge and if I get caught, I'm pinning
- 54:45it on the baby, like the time I shot mister Burns. So what
- 54:49were your thoughts on here, because they are essentially retconning one of the major
- 54:53plot lines of The Simpsons, where he says, if I get caught doing
- 54:57this, I'm gonna put it on the baby like I did when I shot
- 54:59Burns. Yeah, it's a a blink and you miss it kind of gag
- 55:05kind of thing, Like it just says a move on. But it's like
- 55:07it's essentially reconning the whole story, right, Yeah, that's the thing,
- 55:12and coming back to the continuity only matters when it does story. I guess.
- 55:15I guess because of the throwaway line nature of it. To me,
- 55:19it didn't like rub me too much the wrong way. But I mean,
- 55:22also it just sort of comes back to the whole, like the Simpsons criticizing
- 55:27their own decision to make Maggie the killer, and it's like, no,
- 55:30own it, Like it's that was your choice. Then don't like try and
- 55:35rectroactively like yeah, change it or anything like that, or say it doesn't
- 55:38make sense. No, that was the choice you made then, Like that's
- 55:43the thing that people write in this episode. Weren't part of the weren't part
- 55:45of that team? Yeah, true, true, Yeah, So that would
- 55:50be my mentality if I was working with the Simpsons in like season eighteen,
- 55:52I would never try and repcon something from like season eight or seven or whatever
- 55:58without the permission from the people who actually made a decision. It's like,
- 56:00don't fuck with the past. That was their decision, don't change it.
- 56:05Yeah, that's it. And like, I guess I just hate the self
- 56:07criticismness of it, Like I just feel like it's it's not like a mistake
- 56:13you had to own. This was a very good episode that you like,
- 56:16you don't need to pretend that was a bad decision. Like, I mean,
- 56:22I remember being very disappointed people have People still think it's a pretty stupid
- 56:25decision. Yeah, stupid. It's a stupid conclusion. But you know,
- 56:31like you said, they made a decision, you got to stick with it.
- 56:34Yeah, but that's the problem with it. You couldn't have pinned it
- 56:37on any other character without serious legal repercussions for it. Yeah, it's literally
- 56:42the besides, maybe Samda's little helper, like was the smartest decision. Yeah.
- 56:47Then Lisa tells the story Revenge of the Geeks, and as I said,
- 56:50I think I enjoyed this one of the most. So the boys are
- 56:52playing a game of what's it called whether that there you're pushing the discs on
- 56:55the ice. Oh yeah, it's a bit like curling, isn't it curly?
- 56:59That's the one, Yeah, with the Geeks and Skinner as well.
- 57:01And Martin then reveals in the science lab he's now built a get Bacon eight
- 57:06and all it requires to operate it is a small amount of coordination. Reminds
- 57:09me of kind of like the Infinity glove thing. Is it the Infinity glove?
- 57:12What's what's Yeah, the infinity got like way before the Simpson's predicted it,
- 57:17even though it existed many years before in the comics. So the infinity
- 57:22gaulet right by back when I sed to work a pop Coach. When that
- 57:25film came out, that was such a hot sell, like every kid wanted
- 57:30to have a Gotland on their hands at Christmas time. But hasn't Marvel fallen
- 57:34since? Yeah no, I was one of the biggest fans of the MCU
- 57:37movies, but Phase four man want to turn around, Like I don't care
- 57:43to watch any of the shows. Pretty much every movie that I've watched,
- 57:45maybe with the exceptions of Guardians three, I have disliked. I haven't seen
- 57:52it. Yes, I don't see what happens, but I'm going to watch
- 57:53it just because I have to watch it to sort of complete the trilogy.
- 57:57Yeah. No, it's a perfect and that story I'd say with the Marvel
- 58:02films, right the Phase four is it a case of no matter how good
- 58:07the writing is, if people don't give a shit about the characters, then
- 58:09it's not gonna work. Like, no one gives a shit about the characters
- 58:13in Phase four. I'm sorry, they just don't. Yeah. I think
- 58:16it's also like overexposure as well, and like no better emphasize than with the
- 58:21TV shows as well, because Disney Plus has ruined it with the shows.
- 58:24Yeah, I mean same with Star Wars as well. Is that. Yeah,
- 58:28I used to get very excited for the new Star Wars movie, but
- 58:30now that it's a Star Wars series, like I feel like I'm hearing about
- 58:32the new one coming out, and the fuck I still haven't watched the other
- 58:36three, you know, and it's sort of more of a chore rather than
- 58:39like a big movie that you know, we gather the friends and go to.
- 58:43Like, yeah, MCU movies were like an event and like they weren't
- 58:46always going to be the greatest movies. I think it's worse though. Were
- 58:49like a reliable seven out of ten sort of experience, but like because of
- 58:53the shows as well, because you're watching out home, it's like more isolated,
- 58:57so it's not as like a fun atmosphere as it was to get your
- 59:01friends to go to the cinema to see them. And and I mean,
- 59:05yeah, I can't blame everything on the pandemic, because yeah, the movies
- 59:07themselves as well have just really dropped in quality. And the whole multiverse thing,
- 59:12you know, it's just already tired. And I think the promise of
- 59:17multiverse superhero movies hasn't been lived up to, Like it's it's just made for
- 59:22either lazy or confusing storytelling in my opinion, but did make having good pandava
- 59:27special there. Yeah, yeah, I ended up checking that out. That
- 59:30wasn't too bad. Actually put a chicken it and make it gay. It
- 59:32was fucking hilarious. Yeah, that was the refrain of the thing, that's
- 59:37for sure. I did love the way though that they made Kathleen Kennedy the
- 59:39baby face by the end, made you realize we're all to blame for this.
- 59:43It's not just it's not just like Disney's fault. You guys fucking bitch
- 59:45and moan to the point where they felt like they had to do a complete
- 59:49fucking one to eighty and then you bitch and made it like it's everyone's at
- 59:52fault here. You know, we all need to take a step back,
- 59:53sit down, and that's the potblem. I said to Nikola, this is
- 59:57exactly what needs to happen, is that Kathleen Kennedy in the faces of Disney
- 1:00:00and to sit down and just fucking talk it out with the fans, not
- 1:00:04just hiding their offices and make their decisions. Come out and be like,
- 1:00:07look, this is why we're doing. Tell us why you don't like it.
- 1:00:10Have an open forum I feel like they had an open forum. It
- 1:00:14make things all better. Yeah, But I mean there is just a glot
- 1:00:16of entertainment right now, when like putting out these shows that are like a
- 1:00:21five out of ten is just it's not doing it anymore. Yeah, they
- 1:00:23know they need to seriously either yeah Shelvy to start again, or it's something
- 1:00:28like just at least scale it back. Yeah. Well, guys, he's
- 1:00:31right when he says it's like Star Wars has become homework now and it's never
- 1:00:35been more more evident. Then I started watching the Boba Fett show and then
- 1:00:38I got bored of it and stopped watching, right And then I started watching
- 1:00:40Mando season three, and I was like, wait, why is Gogo's with
- 1:00:45mandoig? When the fuck did this happen? What? And it's like,
- 1:00:47oh, it happened in Book of Boba Fett. And I'm like, hang
- 1:00:50on, that's not the fucking Mandalorian. What's going on? So you tell
- 1:00:53me how to watch that show now to understand the Mando Come on? No.
- 1:00:58Yeah, And I feel like the MCU as well had this problem when
- 1:01:00Agents of Shield was a thing, and like a couple of plot points in
- 1:01:04the movies relied on that, and it's like, no one's watching fucking Agents
- 1:01:07of Shield. Nobody. That's the aw Ram page of Marvel Shows. Good
- 1:01:15day to all our aw fans. But as I was saying, I really
- 1:01:22liked this. So you all requires to operate the inffinity Gautlan is a small
- 1:01:25amount of coordination. They're all a bit worried about that. Will has to
- 1:01:29juggling at camp, juggling class whatever was a camp good morning dingases what are
- 1:01:35you doing touching each other's butts? You are so dead, you're alive.
- 1:01:40That is such a funny way to just like because I know that. Yeah,
- 1:01:45Martin's you know, he's a problem solving nerd. You know he figured
- 1:01:50out the scientifically best line to immediately get their eye are as quickly as possible.
- 1:01:55Yes, because good morning dinguses what are you doing touching each other's but
- 1:02:02And they raced towards him, went to the library. Little Hitler joke here
- 1:02:07before Nazi leader, he was a Nazi reader and Milhouse then gets revenge my
- 1:02:15bags. What were your thoughts on Kearney's use of my fun bags? Is
- 1:02:20that just an Australian thing, the term fun bags? Yeah, it's one
- 1:02:23of those things like when you hear Americans say fanny and then you have to
- 1:02:27reprogram. Oh okay, that's right, that doesn't mean the same thing.
- 1:02:30But like fanny, like you know, that's just their word for it,
- 1:02:34where like fun bags is just the term we've made up for breasts because their
- 1:02:38bags are fun to some people. Yup. It's like for him and Kearney
- 1:02:44call him his fun bags. I'm like, are you guys using a term
- 1:02:47that incorrectly here? I've never heard a guy call his man titties, his
- 1:02:52man boobs fun bags before. Well, Kenney hasn't does, and he thinks
- 1:02:58they're fun and yeah, but he starts hitting Jimbo with a stop hitting yourself?
- 1:03:04I like this where it changes to why are you hitting yourself? Yeah,
- 1:03:07because man, it just seems like the most obnoxious way to beat someone
- 1:03:13up. Why are you hitting yourself? Stop hitting yourself? I'm like,
- 1:03:15oh, what a douchebag. Yeah, had a few of those in my
- 1:03:19time. I'll tell you what. Really shout it out to my older brothers.
- 1:03:22Lisa, then thanks Millhouse. You know we can all the nerds can
- 1:03:25breeze easy, breeze breathe easy. Now except the ones of asthma. Of
- 1:03:29course, Martin accidentally hits Millhouse with a shuttle cock or something and he uses
- 1:03:34a device on Martin. He starts beating up all the nerds with his glove
- 1:03:37naws. He's just losing his mind. You're kind of right though, where
- 1:03:39he sort of like takes revenge out on all the nerds as well. But
- 1:03:45I guess it's just a play on someone who's been beating up their whole life.
- 1:03:47They just get power hungry and it's just goes to their head and they
- 1:03:51just lose control of what's right and what's wrong. Yeah, I think it
- 1:03:55just happens a bit too quickly, and I mean you can give the episode
- 1:03:59a bit of leeway, and it's, yeah, it's a three segment story
- 1:04:01sort of thing. But yeah, I just would have liked to see the
- 1:04:04turn a lot more fleshed out because and I think the other problem that I
- 1:04:09have with the back end of this segment as well is that they kind of
- 1:04:12burnt all the good glove bullying, I don't know what you call them,
- 1:04:18all like the purple nourple and wet willies and things like. They burnt out
- 1:04:21all those jokes on the first half of the segments. So when we do
- 1:04:26this, he's just like doing the same things to the nerds, and we
- 1:04:29don't get any evolution in those jokes except for the new kid who goes,
- 1:04:33I just came here to the first time today. I haven't done anything to
- 1:04:35you. I didn't mind. Millhouse is, oh you will. But then
- 1:04:40yeah, it's just the freshman facial. I don't know. There wasn't a
- 1:04:43much development with those anyways. Yeah, and you had an issue with the
- 1:04:48diddler. Yeah. Actually, here's a weird connection to our other podcast as
- 1:04:55well. I like the idea that even like brown Skeeper Willie was bullying Millhouse,
- 1:05:00just in such a blame way. It's like, oh, what's good,
- 1:05:02what are you doing? Gonna have some more of your weirdo pills?
- 1:05:04And then yeah, Millhouse decapitates him. And then Principal Skinner looks at Groundskeeper
- 1:05:12will He's like, hey, will you clean all this up? And then
- 1:05:14will he starts drinking his own blood. And ah. Another connection with our
- 1:05:18other podcast where we talked about drinking blood recently. Yeah, those of you
- 1:05:23wondering in aw this week a wrestler drank the blood of another person. Actually
- 1:05:29blood was pointing down this guy's face. He got underneath his face, opened
- 1:05:30his mouth and let the blood drip into his own mouth. I was horrified.
- 1:05:34Well, yeah, he may not have drunk it. We didn't see
- 1:05:36him swallow the blood, but we certainly saw him spit it up in the
- 1:05:40air. It dripped into his mouth and he spat it everywhere. And not
- 1:05:45cool. Not cool at all much of the year though. For more aw
- 1:05:53phone check out gd But Yeah, as you're saying, yes, I guess
- 1:05:58the prevenge on the ni Kid, I'm a fan of like Bart's eye coroner.
- 1:06:01He's like, that's the only line I get, And Lisa says,
- 1:06:03there's no small parts, only small actors. I'm like, what was the
- 1:06:05point of that? Excuse me? Sorry, that was gonna be my other
- 1:06:09trivia thing. Sorry, I just saw my little note of that asked that
- 1:06:13as a trivia question. What was Bart's only line in this thing? Yeah?
- 1:06:15I just didn't get the need to It killed the momentum of the scene.
- 1:06:19I I'm like, ye, what purpose did that serve? Yeah?
- 1:06:23Absolutely, and especially like at this time where yeah, Millhouse is like about
- 1:06:27to turn it on Lisa and it's having this yeah, character conflict moment yeah,
- 1:06:30that you're right. Yeah, it really did screw with the momentum.
- 1:06:33But then this is where Milhouse, he says, because List is concerned,
- 1:06:35and Millhouse says, you're gonna love it when you're my queen, and yeah,
- 1:06:39he's just he's gone, he's gone mad. And I'm not sure that
- 1:06:42this actually happens in any of the Revenge of the Nerd movies because there's a
- 1:06:45lot of them, right, it's like three or four, not this obviously
- 1:06:47to this level, but like, is there a thing where a guy gets
- 1:06:49some sort of like ability to sort of beat up other kids and then the
- 1:06:54power gets through his head or something, or is it just it was just
- 1:06:56a play on the name. Yeah, okay, Nah, this has nothing
- 1:06:59to do with the Revenge of the Nerds besides the fact, like some nerds
- 1:07:02get revenge, and even then it's their approaches are very different. I see
- 1:07:10why it would be an honor to be your queen. Gone. I feel
- 1:07:15it would be best if we just stay friends. Nobody speares my feelings.
- 1:07:25I can't do it. I can't hurt you, Lisa. You forgot about
- 1:07:35me because I had the momps I actually would have liked I thought it would
- 1:07:44have been funny. It's a wasted gag. Obviously, Nelson's one at the
- 1:07:45end that takes it and you forgot that we had them forgot to have the
- 1:07:47mumps. That's why he wasn't around. But it would have been funny to
- 1:07:50have had used like the full Nelson on Nelson somehow. Ah. Yes,
- 1:07:56another one for our wrestling fans. Yeah, yeah, true. Back to
- 1:08:00present day and trying to have the whole message of when you take revenge revenge
- 1:08:04on somebody, you're just as bad as the person that you harm, and
- 1:08:08Homas says, no, the lesson is never put you down your weapon.
- 1:08:11Basically, Homos is not listening to any of the stories, and it's just
- 1:08:15not a great sort of like what are these called when they're in between the
- 1:08:17seconds in between? Oh, the interstitials or something. You know that there's
- 1:08:20a name for it, but basically they used to use wrap around in the
- 1:08:24earlier ones, but they're they're not great in this episode, are they?
- 1:08:27Yeah? Well, I forgot to mention as well. At the start of
- 1:08:30this segment, it was set up with Lisa being like, you know,
- 1:08:31Dad, I also know a tale about blah blah blah, and then Homer
- 1:08:34goes, oh, is it the Count of Monte Cristo. I love that
- 1:08:38story, and you're just U fuck this guy. Yeah. We then cut
- 1:08:42to the rich text and enjoying his view and Home's about to get revenge on
- 1:08:45him, and it's time for Bart's story. And was like, no,
- 1:08:48he's too dumb for a story. And I was like why why why is
- 1:08:51he being this cruel? It's just stupid. But and Bart's isn't a time
- 1:08:56that I like to call the past. This is where this story is set.
- 1:08:58It is a called Man begins. I'm a big I'm a mark for
- 1:09:02Bartman. I just like Bartman. I just rewatched three minute of comic book
- 1:09:05recently, the first appearance of Bart Men. What a great episode. Essential
- 1:09:10it is. It is an essential episode of the Simpson's. Yeah, just
- 1:09:15the introduction to comic book guys as well. But when they're all just like,
- 1:09:17we don't want this comic book anymore, freaking kids, and I was
- 1:09:19like that that is my life, freaking kids. Given that catchphrase a workout
- 1:09:28before. Yeah, it's you know, I used to hate the episode my
- 1:09:30sister my sitter, right, Yeah, I've just never really liked that one.
- 1:09:34And then I watch it now where Bart's like little more, little more,
- 1:09:39too much. My kids do that, but Bart doesn't deliver. And
- 1:09:43that's what I didn't like about it was Bart was so deliberately mean to Lisa
- 1:09:46in that episode, right, But I watch it now and I can relate
- 1:09:49to Lisa's pain of what the fuck mate? Like, like, my kids
- 1:09:54are like I want more, drink more, more, more appetuice. I'm
- 1:09:57like, maybe more please. I'm not not that March, And I'm like,
- 1:10:00freaking kids, you just need them to go to bread already. You
- 1:10:09didn't see which bread. But we're at New York and we've got a little
- 1:10:15King Kong reference here. He's waving from the top of the tower. And
- 1:10:17Bart's walking from the opera with his parents and obviously he's a young Bruce Wayne.
- 1:10:21He's heading down the alley. Why they walked in the alley, I'm
- 1:10:25not too sure. And Marge then turns a ring around is actually a bigger
- 1:10:29one is where snakel the serpent as it turns out to be, shoots Homer
- 1:10:32and then shoots Marge because Mama says something in the lines of like don't shoot
- 1:10:35her or something. He's like, oh, you don't frighten me bang or
- 1:10:40my wife wife bang? Yeah? Or my kid She's like shut up.
- 1:10:43They both die. We get the iconic necklace fall into the ground shot avenge
- 1:10:46me in a flamboyant in practical fashion. I like that, Yeah, I
- 1:10:49like that like as well, like we're talking about, when they do they
- 1:10:54sort of more direct parodies of pre established things. It's like, all right,
- 1:10:58how do we Simpson's eyer and you know, doing the crime alley scene.
- 1:11:00We've seen this a million times. It's the pearls dropping, but you've
- 1:11:03got March there, so of course you do the red pearls. It's yea,
- 1:11:06a fantastic bit of tying in and then also undermining the source material.
- 1:11:11I love that. Yeah, in practical flamboyant fashion. Bart can't do anything.
- 1:11:15No, he's had the chance to sort of take the serpent down and
- 1:11:16he lets him get away. He's then standing at the graves and it's quite
- 1:11:19a sad moment there, but Grandpa walks up and he's going to be the
- 1:11:21Alfred here. He's going to get him into shape the old timey way.
- 1:11:25A little bit of a montage of him getting into shape, the old Tommy
- 1:11:28way, gets into awesome shape. Then we have a Pooh and he's got
- 1:11:31his little stall and someone has stolen the herald slash Harold tribute tribunes. And
- 1:11:36but then it eltricutes him in a very overseellious homicidal way. Yep and yeah,
- 1:11:45but then tells him you're not gonna pay the We're not going to buy
- 1:11:47anything. Move along good like the Springfield. I mean, Gotham underworld is
- 1:11:51trembling while silent citizens sleeps. Snuggers a bug right because Bartman is knocking down
- 1:11:57bad guys like already use knacks up, young Star. It's bad guys like
- 1:12:00the Talker, the Deddler, mister bowl Sugar and Spice, and Parson money
- 1:12:16a new snake tattoo. When will I find the man who murdered my parents?
- 1:12:23When attention bart Man, this is the serpent saying, fangs a lot
- 1:12:28for getting rid of the competition, more stuff for me to steal. Oh,
- 1:12:33no villain is safe from me, Serpent. I'm not a villain.
- 1:12:36I'm a transvestite. Explain that to your maker. I'll take it from here,
- 1:12:45bart Man. I've seen this image of poisoned lady so many times I
- 1:12:50could never pinpoint remember where it came from, and it's in this I like
- 1:12:55to hear him being a villain. They ruined it with the transvestite dad coming
- 1:12:59up there, I was like, didn't need to go there. Yeah,
- 1:13:00this is reprehensible at best. Like, look, the best way you can
- 1:13:06take this joke is that it's a comment on police brutality or whatever. But
- 1:13:12you don't want that from your Simpsons and that yeah, Lenny poison Lenny goes,
- 1:13:16I'm not a villain, I'm a transvestite. Then but with that information
- 1:13:20electrocutes him and then Wiggan goes, I've got it from here and shoots poison
- 1:13:25Lenny four times. It's just disgusting, and especially when you find out in
- 1:13:30the disproportionate way that transgender people are murdered. It's just there's no reconciling this
- 1:13:35supposed joke. It's just awful. Like this is enough to tank this episode
- 1:13:41down, like many rating markings just because of this joke in my opinion.
- 1:13:45Well, there's a lot of gay panic and homophobic gags. Yeah, in
- 1:13:48recent seasons, more more and more evident than ever before, which is a
- 1:13:54shame because you know you're talking abot to show the head homophobia ten years prior,
- 1:13:57and yeah, and they're doing jokes like this now and it's easy to
- 1:14:01sort of just do the cop out of well, it's just a sign at
- 1:14:03the times, it's like I get that, and you know, we're reviewing
- 1:14:06it through twenty twenty three eyes. Would we have been as annoyed with this
- 1:14:10joke in twenty twenty three? Probably not, I'd sorry. In two thousand
- 1:14:13and seven, probably not right. More and more people were getting away with
- 1:14:15making this kind of joke, and it wasn't widely acknowledged that this isn't the
- 1:14:20right way to go about things. We kind of all we all knew it
- 1:14:23wasn't right, but it was just the jokes were made. You know,
- 1:14:26it's hard to sort of it's hard to explain to someone who's a young person
- 1:14:30now why we ever thought it was acceptable in any way. So, reviewing
- 1:14:33this with tween twenty three eyes, I look at it and go, it's
- 1:14:36just terrible. I just don't think it was just necessary at all, Like
- 1:14:41it just it just didn't need to be there. I'm not sure how they
- 1:14:43thought it was funny to sort of have I'm just a transvest diet. You
- 1:14:46know, I'm not a super villain and we're going to kill you anyway.
- 1:14:49They might not have meant it being that they're killing it because it's a transvestor,
- 1:14:53but it just comes across that way with the way it's handled. So
- 1:14:56maybe it was just poor direction. I'm not too sure, but it comes
- 1:14:59across like only because he's a transvestite, which probably isn't a joke that needed
- 1:15:02to be in the episode. No, not at all. And we're trying
- 1:15:05to portray Bartman as this righteous character and aside from everything else, he's killing
- 1:15:12an innocent person. And like they take a bit of leeway with the whole
- 1:15:15Batman parody because Batman's whole thing is like he's not meant to kill. And
- 1:15:18like, I feel like this episode almost got close to like making a comment
- 1:15:23is like he does kind of like leave his the criminals he beats up in
- 1:15:29a way that they will probably die, Like the episode gets close to making
- 1:15:32that comment but never does. And then yeah, shit, like this just
- 1:15:36first of all undermines the character that you're meant to be portraying as righteous,
- 1:15:40and yeah, it gives this episode, it gives this segment of real dark
- 1:15:45tone that it just doesn't need. That Then like is really confused again when
- 1:15:51we move into the next scene, where then it just does turn into like
- 1:15:56an Adam West Batman sort of mode. Maybe that was trying to sort of
- 1:16:00cover all ground, you know, because we've had both versions of the Batman.
- 1:16:03You had the Burton, you had the Christopher Nolan, and you had
- 1:16:05the fanboyant TV sixties era and the later nineties ones as well mid to late
- 1:16:11nineties. Yeah, well, I mean in this mode as well, I
- 1:16:15think you want to be going hard in on the Nolan one. Yeah,
- 1:16:17this is the most relevant movie, the most relevant trilogy, and it's just
- 1:16:21not But it's not funny though, is it? Is it? You can't
- 1:16:25get any humor out of the Christopher Nolan esque Batman vibe. I thought they
- 1:16:29were doing a decent job, like and especially like the whole old timey workout
- 1:16:32thing. Yeah, that's the era that you're parroting. So yeah, yeah,
- 1:16:36go for it and do all those jokes about is an old timey gym
- 1:16:41equipment funny, you know, that sort of thing. But yeah, then
- 1:16:45just sort of like mixing it in with the stylistic differences, like yeah,
- 1:16:48there was just a lot of tonal inconsistency for this segment for me, it's
- 1:16:53reviewed. It's revealed here that Bart is looking for the snake tattoo, So
- 1:16:58showaway were it a snake, but you know that's what Bart's gonna be doing,
- 1:17:01is you can be looking for the villain has the tattoo of the snake
- 1:17:04on his neck. We're now at the museum and Lou says, there's no
- 1:17:08sign of the serpent demand anywhere. Everything's always worked with you, Like,
- 1:17:11nah, yeah, I did like that line. I feel like that,
- 1:17:14like the relationship between Lou and Wigham really broke down in the last like two
- 1:17:17or three seasons, like Wigham was just always mean to Lou. Now yeah,
- 1:17:21yeah, to use another worst episode ever term is that they call it
- 1:17:28the Wigham Lou Corner, where a lot of yeah, post classic Simpsons would
- 1:17:31just go for these Chief Wigaman Officer Lou like snippy, little like relationshipy sort
- 1:17:36of humor sort of thing. And it's also extra weird when you put in
- 1:17:41the context, Oh, both these people and characters were voiced by Hanka Zaria,
- 1:17:45so it's just Hanka's Aria having these little conversations with himself, like like
- 1:17:49you think, like it's just just him riffing in the voice booth, and
- 1:17:53they were like, yeah, we love it. Leave it in Like,
- 1:17:55but I mean, this was not a bad one to me. I like
- 1:17:59that delivery of everything's work with here one thing that always annoys me, like
- 1:18:02my pet Peeve in modern season Simpsons. On the show here, I've actually
- 1:18:06got one of our patrons, Dan the man he's keeping track of how many
- 1:18:10times it happens is the appearance of Side Show Mel. Oh yep, he
- 1:18:13gets two appearances in this one, and this is one of them. Here,
- 1:18:15so the Serpent's music starts playing in Side Show Mel. My boon's got
- 1:18:17to mind of its own. I'm like, when did he become a main
- 1:18:21side character because he rarely spoke in like the first twelve seasons. I want
- 1:18:27to say, right, really, really, unless it was a crusty episode,
- 1:18:30you never heard Mel, like occasionally you would, you know, I
- 1:18:32want to hear from sideshow Mel. That's what Fanner says in Who Shop Was
- 1:18:35the Band? So like he occasionally spoke, but it was rare to hear
- 1:18:39him speak. Now it's every episode I've got something to say in the crowd.
- 1:18:44It's like fuck off, yeah, Like this is one of the bad
- 1:18:47things about the teens and then especially the HD era Simpsons is they kind of
- 1:18:53delved into a bit of like Little Britain style like catchphrase humor and yeah,
- 1:18:58we get this from side show Melt, it from klead Us as well,
- 1:19:00where it's just like this, oh he comes up, here's an incest or
- 1:19:03meth joke, and then or an old Gil bit like and it just sort
- 1:19:08of becomes these things where like the story didn't call for these characters. You
- 1:19:11were like, this is where we can get the character to come in do
- 1:19:14their catchphrase and I'll be off now sort of thing, and like, yeah,
- 1:19:17they really did put it a lot of over valuing on Mels verbos,
- 1:19:20delivery and that sort of thing. And yeah, look forward to next season,
- 1:19:26season nineteen, where they do an episode narrated by side show Mel.
- 1:19:30You mentioned this one. I'm a little nervous. You've had Lisa goes Geger.
- 1:19:35You're gonna see Dander going Geger. Yeah. I am sickly looking forward
- 1:19:42to hearing you review that episode. Man, I think it's gonna send you
- 1:19:45baddie. That episode's going to start off with GUIDs doing the intro. Dano
- 1:19:48not there. Dando died on his way back to his own planet. Yes
- 1:19:54he did. Indeed, that music it's so hypnotic. May Boone has a
- 1:20:00mind to be tune. I'll be sneaking those jewels and venom gotta go.
- 1:20:09Sorry, I didn't ask your permission. Hope. That's Cobra setic. Hey,
- 1:20:14jerk puns are lazy writing up. Batman then arrives and he stands in
- 1:20:19the dip. The party is over, and he realizes that the serpent is
- 1:20:24the one with the tattoo well obviously, and he kills him by pushes him
- 1:20:28back ironically on fangs, and that is the end of the Serpent. Then
- 1:20:31Lisa the reporter, she rocks up. You know it didn't bring your parents
- 1:20:34back? Boy, tell me, big boy, was it a really worth
- 1:20:36it? And he's like, well, it didn't bring him back, but
- 1:20:40I've got millions of dollars and no one tell me what to do with it.
- 1:20:42Color Kevin McAllister, Yeah, And then the episode ends with him using
- 1:20:46the weird vibrating band old timing machine and then Bikinni's like jump in the pool,
- 1:20:53but he's like, nah, segment over, Yeah, and that's the
- 1:20:58end basically, So we have back and present time, but points out,
- 1:21:01you know, the acknowledging this the three stories I've told, and this one
- 1:21:05you know would have been the firm will been better as a Halloween story.
- 1:21:08And then home and the rich text and the bonding over the fact that they're
- 1:21:11both from where Connecticut? Connecticut? That's right, and he says, how
- 1:21:15many starts you think about there? Hammer says two. Then they lay there
- 1:21:18to figure out why humans are inclined to hate each other, and they dedicate
- 1:21:23the episode to all those who died in the Star Wars film. Speaking of
- 1:21:26Star Wars. Yeah, and that's the end of the episode. So as
- 1:21:30season eighteen sends to roll on, majority of the episodes have very weak endings.
- 1:21:35They're not really leaving you on much of a high note. And I
- 1:21:38think that reflects on the overall positivity of the reviews. I think a lot
- 1:21:43of the time the episodes ended after the second act, it probably would be
- 1:21:45given a more positive review. But the last it's like they can't see the
- 1:21:48landing anymore. It's like they write an episode and then go, oh,
- 1:21:51fuck, how are we going to end it? I don't know, just
- 1:21:54think of something, you know. It's like they haven't planned an ending out
- 1:21:57anymore, because so many of the endings just seem so rush store out of
- 1:22:00nowhere or make no sense or just trying to tell a message. Yeah no,
- 1:22:03this one as well, like because yeah, at the end of art
- 1:22:05story, Homer was just ignoring him the whole time and talking with rich Texon
- 1:22:10on the hood of the car. And then it's like they're not solving their
- 1:22:13difference, as they're just doing a stupid little fucking only two stars and then
- 1:22:17it just I don't know, riffs it its way to an end question mark
- 1:22:23and then just goes out on this Star Wars like scroll of all these names
- 1:22:28and whatever people who died in Star Wars, and like there weren't any really
- 1:22:32good jokes in that as well. It just felt weird and like why are
- 1:22:35we doing this? It is a bit of the lolso random era of humor,
- 1:22:41the era of comedy. I reckon it was the Family Guy influence.
- 1:22:45I think, oh yeah, one hundred percent. Yeah, yeah, that
- 1:22:48would have been so much damage to animation. Yeah, I mean, God
- 1:22:55bless me, he's made him a lot of money, but he's brand of
- 1:22:58humor. Really, I don't think for the better, No, I mean
- 1:23:03it's a mix because yeah, Family Guy, I feel like settled into its
- 1:23:06right, where yeah, it doesn't matter, we're just setting up sucking a
- 1:23:10long line of gags. But then like American Dad tried, like and it
- 1:23:14still does like, it actually makes stories with good structure and satisfying endings and
- 1:23:19you know, a logical through lines with the plot. But yeah, the
- 1:23:23Family Guy effect is yeah, gonna be especially felt in these later teen seasons
- 1:23:28where yeah, it's just like, I mean, the best tay you can
- 1:23:31give it is that it's a subversion of the old format of tying a nice
- 1:23:35making everything wrapped up in nice, neat little package. But yeah, now
- 1:23:39excuse me package. But yeah, now the joke is undermining that, which
- 1:23:45I don't know, maybe played at the time, but now it just especially
- 1:23:47when you're watching a lot of these episodes one after the other, it's just
- 1:23:50like, yeah, it's just a pattern. It wasn't a one off to
- 1:23:53subvert. It was just you get you get out of episode free card.
- 1:23:58What do we learn, Bomber, what'd you learn from the episode? Mister
- 1:24:00elliot j And yeah, yeah, never put down your weapon, Never put
- 1:24:03down your weapon. That is correct. I learned too. I've like that
- 1:24:08it is okay to commit homicide as long as you're saving somebody eighty cents.
- 1:24:12Yeah, that's the price. That's what a life is worth. All right,
- 1:24:15guys. Now what's gonna happen is I'm actually gonna get in touch with
- 1:24:18mister Guy Davis and we're gonna do his new name Championship in a few moments.
- 1:24:21Yeah, obviously not recording it right now, but you're gonna hear Guy
- 1:24:25Davis's voice in a few moments where we're going to be doing the new new
- 1:24:26Championship. That's the one thing Guy we'll be doing. But thank you again,
- 1:24:29Alie Janey for Johnny is here on forfing a Discount's been quite a joy
- 1:24:32to sit down and talk to your lovely self. No, absolutely, it's
- 1:24:36you know, us to Simpsons. Podcasters have been talking about wrestling so much.
- 1:24:41It's nice to talk about the thing that got us into podcasting in the
- 1:24:44first place. Like, yeah, even dissectingly is you know episodes which like
- 1:24:49a life that we can still bring up the good stuff and you know,
- 1:24:53still relish in that because yeah, the Simpsons isn't devoid of good content.
- 1:24:58And yeah, I love seeing these little glimmers and Yeah, chatting Simpsons with
- 1:25:01you is always a treat, and I'm just a little bit warm. I'm
- 1:25:03just thinking right now, sometimes it's hard at the best of times for Guy
- 1:25:08Davis looking five minutes from my house to get technology to work. So,
- 1:25:12if for whatever reason, this show doesn't happens to end in thirty seconds,
- 1:25:16that's because I couldn't get this shit sort of, which means that, don't
- 1:25:19worry. The new name segment will be on next week show. We'll have
- 1:25:23a doubleheader on next week's episode of four figure Discamp. Because I'm fingers crossed.
- 1:25:27If this episode you look at your time now, this episode still goes
- 1:25:29fro another fifteen or so minutes, it means I got through to guy.
- 1:25:30If it doesn't, if you can hear the intro music already, that means
- 1:25:33it didn't work. Well, hopefully his teeth are working. Yeah, thinking
- 1:25:39of the guy, Good luck with all that. Yeah, before we go
- 1:25:43though, talking Muppets, is it gonna happen or what? Oh? Yeah?
- 1:25:48Oh man, I'm so excited to buy that ida, especially like I
- 1:25:51loved that recent Muppet series they did on the Mayhem Band. I just was
- 1:25:56the fucking best, right, I've got the album right here. I bought
- 1:25:59vinyl four Oh did awesome? I didn't know that was the thing. Love
- 1:26:02it the top the charts, mate, is that right man? Yeah?
- 1:26:08I got to get myself a copy of that. Like, yeah, that
- 1:26:11episode where were talking, yeah please do because yeah, that episode where Jane
- 1:26:17is saying true Colors to what's her name? It left me in tears.
- 1:26:23That cover of True Colors is so beautiful. Every song. And there's a
- 1:26:26bank here he goes, he's the album holding up for Elliot Jay. That
- 1:26:28looks so good. Open it up. It's a gatefold. Yeah. Does
- 1:26:33it have a colored vinyl as well? Oh that is a lovely spread.
- 1:26:36That is some great heart. There's the back here, very psychedelic. I
- 1:26:42believe it is colored vinyl. I shall take it out. We can show
- 1:26:44it to you. Let's take it out. It's like you can't see it.
- 1:26:49It's like translucent, but it's like swirls through it. Oh that is
- 1:26:54unreal. Oh that is beautiful. Every track, yeah, even the original
- 1:26:59tracks they may for that show. We're fucking good, right, so good?
- 1:27:01Like I get the theme song stuck in my head repeatedly like yeah,
- 1:27:08yeah, and yeah, it was just such a good series just so full
- 1:27:12of joy and like, I really wish they would do more Muppets material like
- 1:27:15that and just like not try to get all the fan favorites in, just
- 1:27:19focus on a smaller cast and Muppets and tell a limited series story with those
- 1:27:25with a smaller cast of characters. Yeah, this was just why it felt
- 1:27:29like it felt like a fresh and original where it didn't have to have Kermit,
- 1:27:34it didn't have to have Fozzy in or that in it, and it
- 1:27:36was it was it really. I don't think it was like a how the
- 1:27:40band came together story. It was more it wasn't set in the past,
- 1:27:43was it. No, No, it was set in the modern day.
- 1:27:45It was like, yeah, how did this band never record an album sort
- 1:27:47of thing. It was just Nicola, my wife, you know Nicola,
- 1:27:50she loves the one of rock and roll, oh nah, and part of
- 1:27:55the every day but they're just it's amazing how much that show hawd you feeling
- 1:28:03emotional for the Muppets again? M m no, because I feel like Disney
- 1:28:08have never quite worked out what to do with the license. This is the
- 1:28:11first time I was like, you fucking stuck the landing. Yeah, because
- 1:28:14even I really liked the Office Muppets show that they did, where it was
- 1:28:18about Piggy's late night TV show and them doing the behind the scenes like and
- 1:28:24just when I felt like it found its footing, like Candate and ah,
- 1:28:28that was such a shame. I thought that could have been an easy four
- 1:28:30season show right there. But yeah, and this was like, yeah,
- 1:28:36a glimmer of hope that maybe there is more Muppets content to look forward to
- 1:28:41in the future. I don't know if they could do another movie quite in
- 1:28:44the same way that they did early on, but like, if they do
- 1:28:47more of these limited run series, I'm all for it. It was just
- 1:28:51such so joyous and yeah in that way that, yeah, they got your
- 1:28:56feeling emotions and you'd forget that these are goddamn puppets. You tell so,
- 1:29:01you're telling me it's time to play the music. Yes, it's makeup time,
- 1:29:05turn the lights all right, man, it's been a joy. Thank
- 1:29:10you for joining us here this week. And I forget guys. Guy will
- 1:29:13be back next week. I you know what I'm doing. I'm just gonna
- 1:29:15say it right now. I'm not gonna bother. I'm just gonna go and
- 1:29:17enjoy his time. Ever in Bali, there will be no mail bag this
- 1:29:19week. There we know new names this week that the new names will be
- 1:29:23on next week shows. A double header will do double the points next week,
- 1:29:26so don't worry about that. It will still be happening. But I
- 1:29:28think let's just let's just wrap this one up now because guy, he's had
- 1:29:30he's had his mouth worked on. He's over there working on his specscript for
- 1:29:34his project that he's been working on for years. Let's just not bother him.
- 1:29:38Mate, you're asked up, guy. We'll see you next time.
- 1:29:42The next episode of four Finger disc Out next week we shall be reviewing Little
- 1:29:45Big Girl. Should I be looking forward to this one? Elliott? No,
- 1:29:49really, we for a bit of fun with This was actually an unreleased
- 1:29:55podcast, but me and BT, my normal co host on The Simpsons in
- 1:30:00we had like a tournament where we argued to try and figure out what was
- 1:30:03our least favorite episode, and this one ranked very high. Really, I
- 1:30:09will flag there is one good joke in it that I still use to this
- 1:30:12day, where Bart's driving a car and Lisa goes your hands are meant to
- 1:30:15be at ten and two not four and nothing. Only good joke in that
- 1:30:18episode but you didn't like an episode that I enjoyed recently, come with what
- 1:30:24it was like, and it's a sakend to have opposite taste. But I'm
- 1:30:27intrigued. Now I'm going to like it just spite you. Yeah, good
- 1:30:32luck. I will try. It's a little big It's not a little big
- 1:30:35one. Little big one is good? What is that? Little Big Girl
- 1:30:39is next week's episode of four Forget this guys, don't forget. You can
