Transcript
- 0:11Hello there, and welcome to a mental health moment from the
- 0:14Life Live Better podcast. This is the place we take just a
- 0:17couple of minutes to care for our minds.
- 0:19I'm Paula, and in this episode we're talking about the impact
- 0:22social media has on mental health.
- 0:25Social media can be an incredible tool.
- 0:28It's pretty cool. It lets us stay connected.
- 0:31It helps us learn new things and even find communities where we
- 0:34feel understood and we belong. But like most things, it comes
- 0:38with a flip side. And sometimes that flip side has
- 0:41a real impact on how we think and feel.
- 0:44One of the biggest challenges is just that constant comparison.
- 0:49As we scroll and scroll and scroll.
- 0:51Often what we're seeing is everyone else's quote UN quote
- 0:54highlight reel, while what we're living behind is behind the
- 0:59scenes, you know, our real life. Even when we know that posts are
- 1:04curated and filtered and captioned to perfection,
- 1:07sometimes it's hard not to measure ourselves against those.
- 1:11And over time, that can really chip away at self esteem and
- 1:14increase those feelings of inadequacy.
- 1:18And then there's this issue of information overload.
- 1:22There is an endless stream of news, opinions and updates, and
- 1:27that can leave us feeling very anxious and mentally scattered.
- 1:31And let's be honest, our brains were not designed to process
- 1:35that much stimulation in one day.
- 1:38There's also the time factor. Some folks spend hours scrolling
- 1:44and that can kind of quietly replace the very thing that
- 1:48support our mental well-being, like sleep, real life,
- 1:51connection, movement, and rest. But here's the good news, and
- 1:55there is good news. Awareness gives us power.
- 1:59A healthier relationship with social media doesn't require
- 2:02that we delete every app, It just requires setting
- 2:06intentional boundaries and sticking to them.
- 2:09A couple of steps that can help is to set specific times to
- 2:13check your your social media feeds instead of just hopping on
- 2:17and off all day long when you're bored or they like it.
- 2:21Also, curate your environment. Follow the accounts that will
- 2:25inspire you and support you and educate you and mute and
- 2:29unfollow those that drain you or leave you feeling frustrated.
- 2:33Also, notice how you feel after you scroll.
- 2:37If it leaves you really tense and sad or overstimulated, your
- 2:40body might be telling you it's time for a break.
- 2:44Social media, like most things, isn't all good or all bad.
- 2:48It's all about how we use it and you deserve a digital space that
- 2:52supports your mental well-being, not steals from it.
- 2:56Thank you for joining me today on another mental health moment.
