- 0:00Welcome to Loud and Lifted Quick Lifts, the bite
- 0:02-size boost you didn't know you needed. I'm your
- 0:04host, Betsy Hamm, and today we're throwing it
- 0:07back to my conversation with the amazing Margaret
- 0:08Miller. And we're zeroing in on a few key takeaways
- 0:11from the episode with action items that you can
- 0:14implement this week, and we're going to talk
- 0:15about it all in less than 10 minutes. The first
- 0:26key takeaway from the conversation with Margaret
- 0:28is you need a support system and it starts at
- 0:30home. Margaret talked about how her husband had
- 0:32her back from day one. He gave her the confidence
- 0:35to move forward and want to open her own business.
- 0:38We all need cheerleaders. Now, maybe you don't
- 0:40want to open your own business, but maybe you
- 0:42are having a rough day or maybe you're not sure
- 0:44if you should apply for a new opportunity or
- 0:47new promotion. We need those cheerleaders in
- 0:49our lives. It can be husbands, it can be friends,
- 0:52it can be your mom, but make sure you have somebody
- 0:55who is rooting for you, especially when you're
- 0:57not rooting for yourself. The other part of a
- 1:00support system besides the cheerleader is just
- 1:03the general support. Now, this looks different
- 1:06for all of us, and especially at different stages
- 1:09in our lives. When you have young kids, your
- 1:12support system needs to be somebody who is watching
- 1:15your kids so you can go to work, whether it's
- 1:17reliable daycare or babysitter, or maybe you're
- 1:19lucky enough to have a parent who watches your
- 1:22kids. But we need support. And it goes beyond
- 1:25just the kids and running them to sporting events
- 1:27and activities or making sure they get to their
- 1:31volleyball practice. This just continues to evolve.
- 1:34But you also need to take a look at your life
- 1:36and figure out what can you outsource. Now, outsourcing
- 1:39can mean buying all of your groceries online
- 1:41and having them delivered. Big fan of that. It
- 1:44can mean ordering. everything and anything on
- 1:48Amazon or it can just mean even something as
- 1:50amazing as having the ability to hire a cleaning
- 1:53lady. We all need support and it again looks
- 1:56different depending on our situation in our life
- 1:58but take a look and figure out how you can have
- 2:01better support and especially when it comes to
- 2:03your spouse. You know oftentimes I feel like
- 2:06we're just afraid or we don't want to show weakness
- 2:09so we don't ask our spouse for support when it
- 2:12could be something as simple as unload the flipping
- 2:14dishwasher. Please pick up the clothes, put the
- 2:16clothes in the dryer, whatever it is, am I talking
- 2:18from personal experience maybe, but ask for help.
- 2:22Sometimes we get so overwhelmed, we need to ask
- 2:24for help, whether it's from our partners, heck,
- 2:26our kids, as your kids get older, your family
- 2:28members or your friends. So action item here,
- 2:32if you already have the cheerleader and you have
- 2:34the support in your life, thank them. That's
- 2:37so amazing, you're so lucky. But if you don't
- 2:40have the support or the cheerleader in your life,
- 2:43is it because you're not asking them? Are you
- 2:45not leaning into them? So take an inventory of
- 2:48those who you're surrounding yourself with and
- 2:50figure out is there opportunity to lean in more
- 2:53to them? Or do we need to expand that support
- 2:56around you? Maybe it's your neighbors. Neighbors
- 2:59also can be a really amazing support system.
- 3:02But take a look, determine if you have the right
- 3:04people around you. And sometimes you just have
- 3:06to ask. The next key takeaway is building your
- 3:09circle intentionally. Circles don't just happen,
- 3:12you have to build them and they take time and
- 3:14effort. Margaret said she's working on her circle
- 3:17when it comes to small business owners in her
- 3:19community and it takes time and it takes sometimes
- 3:23something really small as just sending a text
- 3:25or reaching out on social media. Maybe it's cheering
- 3:28for them, maybe it's asking them for coffee,
- 3:31but it takes effort on your part to create circles.
- 3:35And if you do have circles, that's awesome, or
- 3:37a circle, make sure you're in the right circle.
- 3:40I cringe when I hear women talk about their friends
- 3:43not cheering for them or not rooting for them
- 3:45or not supporting them. You have to surround
- 3:47yourself with people who have your back and are
- 3:50willing to support you. Kind of goes back to
- 3:52the first part of needing that support system.
- 3:55So take a look at your circle around you, whether
- 3:58you're in a corporate environment, you're a small
- 4:00business owner. See, take inventory, see who
- 4:03you have. And if you have amazing circles, that's
- 4:06awesome. But even when those circles are created,
- 4:09they take work. It again, takes effort of sending
- 4:12the text to the group and saying, hey, who wants
- 4:14to grab drinks after work tonight? Or when you
- 4:17see that maybe somebody in your circle has something
- 4:19amazing happening, maybe they received an award,
- 4:21sending a text to not just them, but also to
- 4:23the group so everybody can cheer and congratulate
- 4:25that. So action item for this week, send a text,
- 4:30schedule coffee, comment with a heart, but just
- 4:32start the conversation and start building or
- 4:35strengthening your circle today. Next key takeaway,
- 4:38growth takes grit. Overnight success doesn't
- 4:42exist. It's a myth that sometimes now is sold
- 4:44more by media social media highlight reel Margaret
- 4:48talked about building a brand from scratch and
- 4:51she got the confidence by starting slowly and
- 4:53small by just selling for another clothing company
- 4:56But then it took time and patience and effort
- 5:00and things didn't always go her own way But she
- 5:02continued to persevere and move forward even
- 5:05when she wasn't really sure And even when you
- 5:08start to accomplish your goals, you don't get
- 5:10to stop there. You continue to grow and have
- 5:13new challenges that you're going to have to persevere.
- 5:16Also, when you're looking to start something
- 5:18new or maybe apply for a new job or promotion,
- 5:21we have this idea at times that everything has
- 5:24to be figured out and everything has to be perfect.
- 5:27So we get paralyzed and we don't want to take
- 5:28the first step. Well, having it all figured out
- 5:31is just not. realistic and I use the podcast
- 5:35as an example since that was recent for me something
- 5:38I talked about for a really long time had some
- 5:40ideas but I thought everything had to be perfectly
- 5:43aligned and everything had to be completely fleshed
- 5:45out before I can move forward and that's crazy
- 5:48So I just had to start taking small steps and
- 5:51eventually just put an episode out there and
- 5:53I'll continue to grow and evolve and get better
- 5:56as I move forward. Oh, and by the way, I also
- 5:58could not have done this without the support.
- 6:00So I have the right people supporting me to be
- 6:03able to pull this off on a bi -weekly basis.
- 6:06Action item today for growth takes grit. Set
- 6:08one tiny goal toward whatever you're building.
- 6:11Take action, take the first step. It doesn't
- 6:13have to be perfect, but just start moving. And
- 6:17our last key takeaway is lead with authenticity
- 6:20and vulnerability. Real always wins. Margaret
- 6:24doesn't hide the hard parts even today and that's
- 6:27why people trust her. That's why her community
- 6:29and her clients trust her and that's why her
- 6:31team loves her. She's very open and honest about
- 6:34the challenges and continues to move forward.
- 6:37She also talked about that words matter more
- 6:40than you think So whether it's what you're saying
- 6:42to your co -workers or to your friends and also
- 6:45what you're saying about yourself Think about
- 6:47what you're saying and think about if you're
- 6:49building somebody or something up or you're breaking
- 6:52it down Action item here is very easy. Tell someone
- 6:56you appreciate them. You need them and you're
- 6:58thankful for them Margaret talked about reaching
- 7:01out to her team when she was thinking of them
- 7:03and just said thanks. Thanks for being amazing
- 7:05Thanks for being awesome. So this is a super
- 7:07easy action item There are our key takeaways.
- 7:10I have to be honest, this week maybe are the
- 7:13easiest. Sometimes I think we're going to talk
- 7:15about these action items and you might not have
- 7:18the opportunity to act on it. It might take a
- 7:20few weeks or maybe months, but these action items,
- 7:23you're in control of every single one of these
- 7:26and you can do them today. Okay, fine. I'll give
- 7:29you like the week, but you can easily make progress
- 7:31and check these off your list very quickly. They're
- 7:34so easy. You're in control. So please don't.
- 7:36waste time and at least get one checked off your
- 7:39list today. Ask for help. Make sure you have
- 7:42the right support. Work on building your circle
- 7:45or strengthening one that you already have. Take
- 7:48action and tell someone that you're thankful
- 7:50for them. Margaret reminded us circles aren't
- 7:53found, they're built. Brands that matter aren't
- 7:55manufactured, they're felt. So today, start building.
- 7:59One conversation, one action, one real moment
- 8:02at a time. Thanks for turning into quick lifts.
