Transcript
- 0:00Hey guys,
- 0:03this is the Daily Ripples.
- 0:07This is Corey, and it is August 15th.
- 0:10Seeing the impact. The stone:
- 0:14healing begins when I honestly acknowledge that my actions
- 0:18affected more people than I realized.
- 0:22Ripple 1 practical: today I will resist The
- 0:26temptation to minimize the impact of my choices.
- 0:29Harm is not measured only by what I intend, but also by
- 0:33how others were affected. Honest reflection
- 0:36helps me see where relationships may need attention,
- 0:40healing, or amends. Ripple 2 Spiritual.
- 0:44As I walk in truth, even when it is uncomfortable,
- 0:48the Holy Spirit opens my eyes to what I could not see before.
- 0:53Replacing denial with honesty and guilt with the opportunity for healing.
- 0:58The Father calls me to honesty, and Jesus teaches me to love others
- 1:02enough to recognize the ways I may have hurt them.
- 1:07When I was thinking about this this morning, I, uh, man,
- 1:11I was thinking about like all the people that I've affected and,
- 1:16um, the kind of the way I The other way I
- 1:20view that is like, you know, well, I mean, like in a
- 1:23real way, how I view it. I mean, I don't know. I kind of went
- 1:27to the page, page 60 and 61 in the Big Book,
- 1:30and it says, each person
- 1:34is like an actor who wants to run the whole show, is forever trying to
- 1:38arrange the lights of ballet, the scenery, and the rest of the players
- 1:41in his own way. If his arrangements would only stay put,
- 1:45if only people would do as he wished. The show would be great.
- 1:51Everybody, including Cory, would be pleased.
- 1:55Life would be wonderful. And to
- 2:00think I know. To think I know what someone else needs. To think I
- 2:04know where they need to be and what they need to be happy.
- 2:09And through my life, I've tried to arrange people in different ways to
- 2:12please me, not to please them. I thought it might please them because I
- 2:16think I know best. Because I was thinking on the degree of
- 2:20like, you know, well, is there someone that does know best for everybody?
- 2:24And I will— I came to this conclusion, you know, that's God.
- 2:28Now, but then I was thinking, you know, like, you know, what degree of
- 2:32education would you need, or what would you need to know if— what? And I
- 2:35don't think there is one because I think everybody's different. I don't
- 2:39think— and everybody is different. We have similar traits,
- 2:42but everybody has had a different goal. Everybody wants different things and
- 2:47I was thinking about the different women I've hurt in my life.
- 2:52So let's say that— no,
- 2:56let's not say that. I mean, I have hurt different women in different ways.
- 3:01So say me and a woman's not working out. Well, she goes
- 3:04to her mom and her dad.
- 3:07And so that now has affected her mom and her dad. Well,
- 3:11what about her sister that's consoling her?
- 3:15And I think about my significant other, right? So I made amends to her
- 3:19mom and her sister because I've affected those people in
- 3:23those ways too, not just her. And that kind of goes back to
- 3:27the ripple, right? Because on the ripple it says,
- 3:31my actions affected more people than I realized.
- 3:34There's a domino effect to this, right? And that domino effect,
- 3:38it always— I hurt others always,
- 3:42and I think it's just them. Usually it takes me a while
- 3:46to even think I affected just them. But then I come to this place
- 3:50of like, well, man, I affected them, them, and I've
- 3:54affected the whole people's whole different
- 3:58ways. Because if I affected just, I mean,
- 4:03so someone's job. Well, if I affected someone's job,
- 4:07I affected their income, which what if they
- 4:11couldn't pay child support? So then I affected them too. And all these
- 4:15different ways, right? So I come to this place of like, man,
- 4:19it is like I have it. And do I minimize it or
- 4:22do I want to dig deep and see who all I affected?
- 4:25Because at the other side of making that right,
- 4:30that gets me closer to God. And, you know, so if— because if I—
- 4:34what I believe, and, you know, every— if everything's God,
- 4:38which I believe everything is God, then everybody's a manifestation
- 4:43of God, right? And so if everybody's a manifestation
- 4:47of God and I have something between me and you, then I have something in
- 4:50between me and God, and I need to make that right.
- 4:54And, you know, not just to say for me, but like, because that, you know,
- 4:58What about the peace for them? You know, what about with
- 5:03thinking about someone else? And I know
- 5:07we kind of go on this thing of like, you know,
- 5:11what I can get, but what about what they can get?
- 5:14What do they need to get? Like, what about their relationship?
- 5:18Can I be a demonstration? And that kind of makes me think about page 19.
- 5:24It says on page 19 that we feel that elimination
- 5:28of our drinking is only a beginning. A much more important
- 5:32demonstration of our principles lies before us in our respective
- 5:36homes, occupations, and affairs. That's where
- 5:40I'm supposed to be demonstrating this stuff, not just
- 5:44talking to people, talking to this and any of that. I have
- 5:47to be demonstrating it. If I'm not, man, I'm a fraud like I've always been.
- 5:52Back on 61, it says, in trying
- 5:56to make these arrangements, our actor may sometimes be quite virtuous.
- 6:02Corey may be kind, considerate, patient, generous, even modest and self-sacrificing.
- 6:07I might act like, you know, hey, you know, being very nice about this,
- 6:10you know, this is what— this is a good idea
- 6:14for you. And I can come off that way, right? Or in
- 6:18different ways and different people. And then it goes on to say,
- 6:22on the other hand, he may be mean, egotistical, selfish, dishonest,
- 6:26but as with most humans, he is more likely to have varied traits.
- 6:31So I can come off in different ways, and like, you know,
- 6:34because I'm still trying to run the whole show,
- 6:37and I'm probably, you know, like, you know, when you flip over on the next
- 6:40page, it says we step on the
- 6:44toes of our fellows and they retaliate seemingly without provocation.
- 6:49They might not even know they're stepping on my toes, or I might not even
- 6:52know they're stepping on my toes, and then they retaliate or I retaliate.
- 6:55It's a vice versa thing, right? And I've hurt them in
- 7:01a way that I didn't even know. And that goes back to this purple thing,
- 7:04right? It says more people than I've realized.
- 7:08And then it goes on to practical. Today I'll resist the temptation to minimize
- 7:12the impact of my choices. I come into this
- 7:16thing and most mornings, let me say most mornings,
- 7:19I do pray. And most nights at dinner, we do pray things
- 7:23like, hey God, show me what's blocking me from you.
- 7:28And that's the real thing. Because what's blocking me from
- 7:31God is all the harm I've done to others.
- 7:35Am I willing to make that right? And I think
- 7:39I was talking about this, I talk about this a lot, but We
- 7:44come into this thing because for one reason, alcohol. Or,
- 7:48you know, for me at least, you know. And that's this thing of the mind
- 7:51and body. And, um, but I, you know,
- 7:55at a dip— at a deeper level, right, let's talk about freedom, right?
- 7:58So if God's taking, you know, and the 12th, it's— well, kind of goes
- 8:02to that effect. It talks about, okay, in the 6th step,
- 8:06I don't really plan too much ahead,
- 8:10but On page 64, in the 12th, it says,
- 8:13having been granted a perfect release from alcoholism.
- 8:17So this is at Step 6. This is after Step 5,
- 8:20because in Step 5, the promises kind of correlate to— it
- 8:26says, the feeling
- 8:30that the drink problem has disappeared will come often strongly. And then on
- 8:34Step 6, it comes to that place too. Having been granted a perfect release from
- 8:39alcoholism, why then shouldn't we be able to achieve, by the same means,
- 8:43a perfect release from every other difficulty or defect? So like,
- 8:48the way I look at the way this work aligns is like,
- 8:54this is where the rubber meets the road, right? Like, this is what it— like,
- 8:58it's not me ever working on these difficulties or defects, right? It's not.
- 9:02It's It's God. And, uh, you know,
- 9:06people can listen to this and think they're going— they're going to be working their
- 9:09whole life. If you're like me— you might not be like me, and you might
- 9:12be able to run off self-propulsion very well, and just, you know,
- 9:16when you're not tired of arguing with your significant other,
- 9:20you can just stop. That wasn't the case for me.
- 9:24Maybe the case is I had to go make it right with one of my,
- 9:27my exes. One of my past relationships, one of
- 9:31my past relationships with one of my, one of my exes and
- 9:35her mother or her dad.
- 9:40If you go back to page 19, and I
- 9:44like how everything's structured in this book because on the bottom of 19 it says
- 9:47most of us sense that real tolerance of people's shortcomings and viewpoints
- 9:52and a respect for their opinions our attitudes which make
- 9:57us more useful to others. Our very
- 10:01lives as ex-problem drinkers depend upon the constant thought of others
- 10:05and how we may help their needs. It's never
- 10:09about me. It's about you. And, you know,
- 10:12Pastor Mike's not up in the club to defend himself
- 10:17right now, but like, you know, nothing points me at me in this book about
- 10:21that. It's all about you. Because going
- 10:25back to page 62,
- 10:28selfish and self-centered— that centeredness that we think is the root
- 10:33of our troubles, that we think is the root of Corey's
- 10:37troubles, driven by 100 forms of fear, self-delusion,
- 10:40self-seeking. It goes on the next paragraph,
- 10:44so our troubles we think are basically of our own making.
- 10:48And man, I'll tell you, all right, so if I'm looking at 10 different people
- 10:52and those 10 people I think have harmed me, well, how did I affect
- 10:56their life? And maybe really it wasn't those 10 people, maybe it was me because
- 11:00I'm the common denominator. Right? And so when I look at
- 11:04it in that way, maybe when I go make it right with these people,
- 11:07I might have some freedom and they might have some freedom too. And it wasn't
- 11:10for me to have freedom, it was for me to make it right for those
- 11:13people because for some reason, Today, I'll tell you,
- 11:16this is different for me today.
- 11:19My mornings look a lot like this, and, you know, I wake
- 11:23up, pray on my knees,
- 11:27go do some reading, writing, do some prayers for some people.
- 11:31And those people today, some of the people I
- 11:34still have some amends with to make,
- 11:38are the people I pray— or one of the majority of the people I pray
- 11:42for. Every morning. And what I was
- 11:46thinking about is like, you know, they're not even thinking about you, Corey, but you're
- 11:49thinking about them every morning. And, you know, maybe that's what God
- 11:55has me doing right now, you know, because like I still haven't made it right
- 11:59with some of these people. And like I've made it right with a lot of
- 12:01people, but not all. Not all. And maybe
- 12:09that's where I need to be at. I remember a person, um, was talking
- 12:13to me about an amends that they made an approach to,
- 12:16and, you know, the, the approach only went as
- 12:20far— like, the book just tells me I got to make the approach. And on—
- 12:24in the book, it goes on to say on page— so
- 12:29one thing is on page— top of page 80, it says, before taking such a
- 12:33direct drastic action,
- 12:36because this is a drastic thing, right? It's a drastic thing, me going
- 12:40and facing up some— something with somebody that I've
- 12:44potentially caused a criminal act to, a heinous act,
- 12:48whatever it is, or just a little bitty lie. It doesn't matter, right? It's drastic
- 12:52because it's drastic for someone like me that goes against my will. My will
- 12:57says I need to just walk away. Let bygones be
- 13:00bygones. Let people just be how they're going to be,
- 13:03because man, look what everybody else is doing to each other. That's where
- 13:07my head goes. My head will literally, over some time,
- 13:12justify something and then make
- 13:16it nothing, but it's still something to them and me.
- 13:20So it says, before taking drastic action which might implicate other people,
- 13:23we secure their consent. So that's the first step of this,
- 13:27right? So I secure the consent to talk
- 13:31to somebody first. And this is just what the book, Book of Alcoholics Anonymous says.
- 13:35I'm not telling you that's what you or your sponsor have come
- 13:38up with in some grand scheme of how to make amends,
- 13:42but this is what the— like, and that's the difference too.
- 13:48There's not a my program and your program. There might
- 13:52be your program, but my program aligns. And that's what my old sponsor
- 13:56Doug used to say, man. He said, you know, Corey,
- 13:59I know I get off on some tangents, but that's okay. Um,
- 14:04I would call him and, you know, I'd have some stuff going on and he'd
- 14:08say, well, Corey, what, like, what, you know,
- 14:12what is your, uh, what's your plan? What's your plan?
- 14:16And I'd say, like, what do you mean, Doug? And he's like, well, you got
- 14:19the car, you got the relationship, you got the house, you got this.
- 14:24You know, what's your plan? Because I might, you know, if you can tell me
- 14:27your plan, your plan might be better than my plan.
- 14:32Um, and I get all frustrated about, what are
- 14:36you talking about, Doug? They go, well, you know, because I'm
- 14:40in the plan of Alcoholics Anonymous, but if your plan is more attractive than mine,
- 14:45you know, let me know what that is. And, you know, so like, I don't—
- 14:48the reason I like talking so much with the book because
- 14:52I'd rather not talk about
- 14:57my plan because I can make this thing into something that
- 15:01I've made up. Because then if I've made up, do I have it written down
- 15:04in a book and has it worked for millions of people or is it very,
- 15:07very kind of worked for me up to a point? But like, you know,
- 15:11then I've, but I've taken this other plant anyways. Like, who am I?
- 15:15And then if I'm going to go show somebody this plan, Man,
- 15:19and I've made it my own. Now it's mine. And now I've put
- 15:23ego behind that, right? So if I put ego behind that and now I've
- 15:27taken responsibility of this plan, well,
- 15:30I should just make my own book then, right? No, I think like the best
- 15:34thing is to do is to do what the Fifth Tradition says, to carry this
- 15:39message to the alcoholic who still suffers, right?
- 15:42Not my message. So this message says we
- 15:49get to secure their consent because I secure their consent because what
- 15:53if they don't want to hear from me? So that's my first approach, right?
- 15:56What if they're not in a good place to even take what I'm about to
- 15:59say? Well, man, I better not go do it, say anything or do anything that
- 16:03might put them in a worse position than I was already in with them.
- 16:08The second thing is if we've obtained permission, We have,
- 16:11it says, have, and there's a comma there, have consulted
- 16:14with others. So that's the thing. Second thing, I usually need to go talk
- 16:18to my sponsor or somebody, just go talk it over with somebody.
- 16:23And the best advice my sponsor gave me that
- 16:29I give to other dudes, and I don't care if they listen or not,
- 16:32because this is kind of like, you know, his deal, but It makes
- 16:36sense. You know, you should probably
- 16:40like, you know, cause like, you know, you can, I can either write somebody,
- 16:43I can go see them in person, but what if it's an ex?
- 16:48And you know, the, what he suggested is he, he said,
- 16:52have you, did you think about you, what you wore before you
- 16:56went and met him? Because that's the thing. Like, am I, am I doing
- 17:00this for something else? And I've done that too, right?
- 17:04Not in this time, not in this like season of my life,
- 17:08but like, you know, doing this because
- 17:12I just want to rekindle the past. Well, I imagine like if
- 17:17I'm doing that, I'm just going to rehash some things that, you know, we,
- 17:20we're going to do this all over again. All right, so after
- 17:25we can— we got— we consulted with others, it says ask God
- 17:29to help And the drastic step is indicated, we must not shrink.
- 17:32So then I bring God into it, right? I think God needs to be brought
- 17:36up in the first place, but whatever, you know. So I go
- 17:39through that process when I'm doing this stuff, and I think it's amazing
- 17:43because like it's what
- 17:47the book says to do. And I was really thinking about like,
- 17:52you know, if everybody would behave, right? If the— if everybody
- 17:56would do as Corey would wish. It goes back on to
- 17:59say, really on page 62,
- 18:06on the top of it, well, the bottom of
- 18:1061, top of 62, politicians or reformers who sure would all would be
- 18:14utopia if the rest of the world would only behave, if everything would
- 18:18just go right, right? Everybody would just do this, this, this,
- 18:21and everything would be great.
- 18:24So then I come in, like, you know, and kind of Bill's story
- 18:28on page 16 says— and
- 18:33it's like, you know, I think if you really look at this book and you
- 18:35look at the problem, right, well, there's a solution. There's a flip to
- 18:39the problem and solution all through the book. You just got to kind of look
- 18:42around, and it's not a lot of pages to flip through.
- 18:46Says most of us feel we need look no further for utopia. We have
- 18:50it right here and now. Each, each day, my friend, simple talk
- 18:54in our kitchen multiplies itself in a widening circle of peace on earth and goodwill
- 18:57to men. It's right here. It's right now. I don't
- 19:02know where you're headed to, what you're doing, but like, you know, it can be
- 19:04right there right now too. And like, the whole thing is, am I willing to
- 19:07get out of my head to help somebody else today? Because if I am,
- 19:10I could change the whole trajectory of someone's life,
- 19:14and that's through God. It's not through me. It's like, it's— but I'm
- 19:18the vessel, right? Help me be an instrument today. God,
- 19:22help me be an instrument to be able to be of use to other people
- 19:25because I've been taken from so many people. You know,
- 19:27I'm going to end this with a prayer.
- 19:32Father God, help me see the impact of my actions in honesty and humility through
- 19:36your Holy Spirit. Reveal what I've overlooked and
- 19:39give me the courage to address it. Shape my life through the example of Jesus.
- 19:43And lead me into truth, healing, and peace. Amen.
- 19:48Thank you.
