- 0:00Hello, hello, welcome back everybody.
- 0:02Welcome back to the CAT Scan Guru podcast.
- 0:06Welcome back everybody. If this is your first time
- 0:08listening to this podcast. Hi, welcome.
- 0:12My name is Karina. I am a registered CT
- 0:15technologist. I have 20 plus years of
- 0:18experience in CT. I've worked in all aspects of
- 0:21CT, whether it's trauma in you know, acute care, outpatient,
- 0:26you name it. I'm very proficient in cardiac
- 0:28scanning, CT procedures and all the hard CT exams that every
- 0:33tech does not like to take because all the complicated
- 0:35cases they give them to me because I know how to figure
- 0:38them out. So I am also a mom to special
- 0:41needs kids and I also run another brand that has nothing
- 0:44to do with radiology. So I am just the Jack of all
- 0:48trades when it comes to stuff. So if this is your first time
- 0:51listening, welcome. Thank you for subscribing and
- 0:55listening to the podcast because we talk about all the CT things
- 0:58here and how I create different types of topics to help those
- 1:04new incoming CT technologists that are completely lost in CT
- 1:09because we all know that CT and the training structure is not
- 1:13adequate. So I felt that it was my mission
- 1:17and vision to help the incoming generation of technologists to
- 1:21be the best technologists they can be.
- 1:23Also, if you don't know yet, if you haven't been following along
- 1:27on TikTok, I'm pretty sure most of you have.
- 1:29I have at least a CT protocol guide, so it's core CT
- 1:34protocols. It's 10 different protocols to
- 1:36get you going in your training to help you out.
- 1:40It also is bundled up with two courses, a contrast course and a
- 1:44common CT exams and protocols course along with a 10 episode
- 1:49audio series that you can listen to on the go to dominate your CT
- 1:54training. All that is available.
- 1:56You can get a digital version of the protocol guide or a physical
- 2:01version of the protocol guide. So everything is listened in the
- 2:04show notes. So go check it out and go get
- 2:06your guide today. Also, I drop a lot of protocol
- 2:10breakdowns. It's a short breakdown of each
- 2:12protocol on my TikTok channel. So make sure you follow along on
- 2:16TikTok at the Cat Scan Guru, my YouTube channel.
- 2:19I also have that where I drop more educational long form
- 2:23videos. The video portion of the podcast
- 2:25is on the YouTube channel as well, and I do create longer
- 2:31form protocol breakdowns on my YouTube channel.
- 2:35So I have started doing that. So make sure you guys subscribe
- 2:38to the YouTube channel. So thank you so much if this is
- 2:41your first time listening and thank you to everybody that
- 2:43continues to support and follow the show.
- 2:47So let's get into today's episode.
- 2:49Today's episode is the difference between a busy tech
- 2:54and a skilled CT tech. Being busy does not equal being
- 2:58skilled. That's just going to light a
- 3:01fire in everybody's ass here, and that's OK.
- 3:03So there is a difference between being a busy tech versus being
- 3:07somebody who's skilled. OK.
- 3:08So think of the comparison like this.
- 3:11There is a difference between a textbook tech and a tech that
- 3:15knows what they're doing in the room.
- 3:17So those two analogies do kind of go together because that was
- 3:21a analogy that was given to me many, many years ago when I was
- 3:25shadowing if I actually wanted to go to our X-ray school.
- 3:28And one of the X-ray just had told me that that there's a
- 3:32difference between a textbook tech, somebody that's book smart
- 3:36and somebody that can go into that room and know exactly what
- 3:39they're doing and said, you want to be tech B, the one that knows
- 3:42exactly what they're doing in that room.
- 3:44OK, So one of the common problems that I see is there's
- 3:48this constant motion and hustle and bustle in CT department and
- 3:54there's inadequate, inadequate training making the skill set.
- 3:59And there's a lot, lot of gaps in that skill set.
- 4:02OK. So it's masking that skill set.
- 4:05And then there's a lot of learning gaps and technologists
- 4:08are not learning what they need to know so they can operate
- 4:11independently. So there's a lot of factors that
- 4:15come into that. So I'm going to explain a few of
- 4:17them. So, you know, there's very high
- 4:21volumes in CT, there is high capacity and high demand for
- 4:26every exam under the sun because you know, they order those ER
- 4:30exams like it's going out of style, like the world is going
- 4:33to end today. So, you know, everybody that
- 4:34walks in the door needs at least three or four CTS.
- 4:36So texts sometimes confuse that high volume and that fast pace
- 4:41as being skilled. And that's really not the case.
- 4:45OK. And then multitasking, listen,
- 4:47our brains can't remember everything.
- 4:50And multitasking does not make you skilled, OK?
- 4:55It just says you're doing one too many things at a time.
- 4:57And then you can make a fucking mistake.
- 4:58And then guess what? It harms somebody.
- 5:01You know, the patient gets harmed.
- 5:02The, you know, the patient has a reaction, the patient, you know,
- 5:06something happens to the IV. So you can't multitask because
- 5:09you have to focus with one. You have to focus on one task at
- 5:12a time, guys. OK.
- 5:13So there's a lot of factors that come into that because CT is a
- 5:18very complex department. There's a lot of moving parts.
- 5:21And The thing is, is there is such high volumes and such high
- 5:25capacities that a lot of times it's hard to meet those demands
- 5:30from those emergency rooms, you know, the floor patients, the
- 5:33ICU, things like that. So what's happens when you're
- 5:37trying to multitask and be fast-paced and you're confusing
- 5:40this with high volumes and, you know, thinking, oh, well, it's,
- 5:44you know, I'm a busy tech. I'm a skill tech.
- 5:46No, what happens is, is you get burnt out and exhausted and then
- 5:50it doesn't give you an opportunity to really focus on
- 5:54your growth and skill set. And then you are repeating
- 5:58habits that are not needed. Listen, multitasking is not
- 6:01needed, OK? Because you can't do three
- 6:04things at once and then expect each thing to be correct.
- 6:09For humans, we make mistake. We can only focus on one task at
- 6:12a time. I know I I can't OK, I cannot
- 6:15focus on 50 million things. I have to focus on one task, OK.
- 6:19And then there's this thing where there's limited advanced
- 6:22opportunities. Listen, I have seen TikTok
- 6:25videos of people saying that there are limited opportunities
- 6:28in radiology. That is such bullshit because it
- 6:31is. And I know one of my mutuals in
- 6:33the same space has made an entire series about how you can
- 6:38advance when it comes to careers in radiology.
- 6:41OK, CT is an amorizon advancement IR Cath lab.
- 6:47I have seen, you know, different types of people that I went to
- 6:50X-ray school with. Some of them work in public
- 6:52health with pH D's. Okay.
- 6:55There are people that have advanced into IT roles, PAX
- 6:59administration, educators, managers, some of them have
- 7:04become CEOs of the hospital. There are so many advancements
- 7:08that you can do and we're not limited.
- 7:11Okay, so the one thing that we have to start doing is we need
- 7:14to have skill based metrics and the way that the pace that we
- 7:20operate in needs to be, you know, within what we can handle
- 7:25in the department. OK, so skill based metrics.
- 7:28So we're talking about, you know, your workflow efficiency,
- 7:31you know your scan accuracy, communication skills, you know
- 7:35how well you adapt, you know how well you're learning all the
- 7:39material and making sure that you learn the foundation and the
- 7:43core basics of CT and how to operate.
- 7:46You know those exams and get optimal exams and making sure
- 7:49you're positioning the patient correctly, right?
- 7:51Those are the things as far as skills and the metrics that are
- 7:55needed. It's just like the foundation of
- 7:58a house. You have to have a foundation
- 8:00and a structure for training those incoming technologists,
- 8:04those new technologists, and even a technologist that's a
- 8:07traveler, brand new traveler. Now let's say they've got 1-2
- 8:11years experience and they're brand new.
- 8:13This can help them too. OK, So what happens with all
- 8:16that is you get long term career leverage.
- 8:20Like you can leverage it and you can have opportunities open up
- 8:24for you. You know, there's leadership
- 8:25potential. Like I explained, I have seen
- 8:28lots of people that have gone to X-ray school that have
- 8:30leadership positions, OK, it is possible.
- 8:33Anything is possible. You know, you can be one of the,
- 8:37you know, get on to the, you know, medical device companies
- 8:41like Stryker. I've seen techs that that do
- 8:43that job. OK.
- 8:44So there are a wealth of opportunities for you,
- 8:48especially in leadership roles. And then you get more stronger
- 8:52clinical knowledge when you go ahead and you have those skill
- 8:58matrix, you have that proper training structure and you have
- 9:02that flow. OK, So and then you boost your
- 9:07learning potential because we need to continue educating
- 9:11ourselves because there's new things that come out all the
- 9:13time. Look, AI, we use AI and
- 9:16radiology. I know we use a third party AI
- 9:19vendor to create all of our perfusion maps for stroke.
- 9:23As technologists, we don't have to do that piece anymore.
- 9:25So AI tends to, you know, help out when it's needed.
- 9:29So that we can work a little bit faster.
- 9:31We're already taking time to scan the patient and timing is
- 9:34crucial when it comes to those stroke protocols.
- 9:37So we contract a third party AI company that has AI software to
- 9:43make sure they create those perfusion maps.
- 9:46Now, I have to say, sometimes it does screw up and somebody
- 9:50manually has to create those maps because the AI went ahead
- 9:55and, you know, constructed the wrong maps.
- 9:58It happens, OK, it's a program, OK, So there is room for error.
- 10:03So then we have to call and say, hey, we need this match reworked
- 10:06because it's on the wrong side, you know, so there are a lot of
- 10:11opportunities and learning potentials that we need to stay
- 10:14on top of, especially, you know the latest and greatest in the
- 10:17trends that are going on in CT and radiology.
- 10:20So those are the things that we need to do so that we don't have
- 10:26these gaps in our skill set. There's no gaps in our training.
- 10:30And don't be just a busy technologist.
- 10:33Be a skilled 1 and a skilled 1 takes their, you know, don't be
- 10:37busy, busy, busy and try to be fast-paced, like takes, you
- 10:42know, everything with time and is efficient because we want
- 10:46efficiency, not speed, OK, because speed will come.
- 10:51You just have to be efficient first and making sure you're
- 10:54accurate and communicate and there's a lot of opportunities
- 10:58that can open up for you, especially when you have skill
- 11:02set and you go ahead and continue learning and educating
- 11:06yourself. OK, If you're serious about
- 11:09being skilled and making sure that you are, just hone in on
- 11:15your CT training and not just a busy tech, the protocol guide
- 11:19bundle is your go to. So make sure you go get that
- 11:23bundle so that you can start implementing some of the things
- 11:26that I teach within your CT training.
- 11:28So it's in the show notes. Go get you the bundle today.
- 11:33So that is it for our podcast episode for today.
- 11:37So make sure you get your protocol bundle.
- 11:39You can get a digital or a physical copy of it.
