- 0:00Speaker 1: Back here on the Yukon Women's Basketball Coaches Show, Bob Joyce,
- 0:03Speaker 1: Geno Oriam here. The regular season begins on Thursday at
- 0:06Speaker 1: the Excel Center against Boston University, or radio coverage det
- 0:10Speaker 1: FISCU and myself at six point thirty tip off shortly
- 0:13Speaker 1: after seven here on the Yukon Sports Network, the Varsity
- 0:15Speaker 1: Network app, and the Varsity Network dot Com. You mentioned
- 0:19Speaker 1: the Bigs a little bit. I was at practice last Monday,
- 0:23Speaker 1: and I know it was a mostly defensive oriented day
- 0:27Speaker 1: of practice. But one of the things that I noticed,
- 0:30Speaker 1: and that was being emphasized obviously by UCD and the
- 0:33Speaker 1: coaching staff with the Biggs got to stay out of
- 0:35Speaker 1: foul trouble. And that's something we didn't see Sunday, right.
- 0:39Speaker 2: Right, That's going to be a huge point of emphasis.
- 0:45Speaker 3: And a lot of it has to do with being
- 0:50Speaker 3: aware of.
- 0:51Speaker 2: What's going on on the floor, understanding where you need
- 0:54Speaker 2: to be and when and why, having a a big
- 1:01Speaker 2: picture mentality of what's happening, being able to make really
- 1:08Speaker 2: good decisions. And I okay, you know Jenna has not played.
- 1:14Speaker 2: You know, that was her first time out in public,
- 1:17Speaker 2: you know, so maybe she was over anxious, maybe you
- 1:21Speaker 2: know the excitement Ice has played a little bit, you know,
- 1:26Speaker 2: so between the two of them, there's got to be
- 1:33Speaker 2: a tremendous amount of improvement. It's it's okay if we
- 1:38Speaker 2: don't get enough positives, but we can't get that many
- 1:42Speaker 2: negatives when it comes to, you know, eight fouls between
- 1:47Speaker 2: the two of them, So that has to that has
- 1:50Speaker 2: to get taken care of it, and it will, it will.
- 1:53Speaker 2: You know, the more we play, the more situations they're in,
- 1:57Speaker 2: the better they'll they'll be able to read those. But
- 2:00Speaker 2: that that's gonna be a huge key for us for sure.
- 2:03Speaker 1: Right and for Jenets who you mentioned her first year,
- 2:06Speaker 1: and I'm thinking of the Big East. There's not a
- 2:08Speaker 1: lot of post players her size in the Big East.
- 2:11Speaker 1: You won't see players like that until you get to
- 2:14Speaker 1: the bulk of non conference play. I don't know if
- 2:16Speaker 1: Carolinas maybe has one or two if you play old
- 2:18Speaker 1: Miss down in the Bahamas, certainly they do. They gave
- 2:22Speaker 1: USC a fit yesterday, but that's something she's obviously just
- 2:25Speaker 1: gonna have to adapt to.
- 2:27Speaker 2: Yeah, they both are, and and you're right in the
- 2:33Speaker 2: in our conference they aren't as many, so that puts
- 2:38Speaker 2: you know, when a team is playing with five out
- 2:41Speaker 2: on the perimeter. You know, that really does put those
- 2:45Speaker 2: guys in a in a tough situation. But that's good
- 2:51Speaker 2: because they're going to learn how to do things that
- 2:53Speaker 2: are kind of uncomfortable for them.
- 2:57Speaker 3: You know.
- 2:58Speaker 2: So I'm all we can do is just keep after
- 3:01Speaker 2: them and keep working with them and keep you know,
- 3:05Speaker 2: keep dragging it out of them because I think it's there.
- 3:09Speaker 1: All right, let's talk Page. All she did was you
- 3:11Speaker 1: twelve or fourteen? That's efficiency for you? Twenty seven points
- 3:15Speaker 1: nine boards? And correct me if I'm wrong here. I
- 3:18Speaker 1: know she works your tail off in the gym. Does
- 3:22Speaker 1: that fall away relatively new? I know she did some
- 3:25Speaker 1: of that last year, particularly off that inbound play when
- 3:28Speaker 1: when she curled off Nika Founder in that baseline, I
- 3:30Speaker 1: mean that was almost automatic last year, but that fall
- 3:33Speaker 1: away looks a little more defined this year.
- 3:37Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 3:37Speaker 2: She does spend a lot of time in the gym,
- 3:39Speaker 2: and she does spend a lot of time kind of
- 3:42Speaker 2: improvising different things and creating different ways of scoring.
- 3:50Speaker 3: You know, you.
- 3:52Speaker 2: Watch you know, you watch Page play, and.
- 3:57Speaker 3: She's very creative. You know, she understands how to how
- 4:02Speaker 3: to create for herself, for others.
- 4:05Speaker 2: She's got a great imagination. Yeah, she's been shooting the
- 4:10Speaker 2: ball lights out the entire preseason. The the fact that
- 4:19Speaker 2: you know, she's able to add something each and every
- 4:22Speaker 2: year that she's been.
- 4:23Speaker 3: Here, that that little fade away.
- 4:31Speaker 2: Is going to come in handy, I think against some
- 4:33Speaker 2: of the big defenders that we're going to play against.
- 4:36Speaker 3: And so just getting her.
- 4:43Speaker 2: Getting her enough rest during games is going to be
- 4:46Speaker 2: a big key because she hates to come out. Getting
- 4:48Speaker 2: her enough rest in practice is going to be a
- 4:50Speaker 2: big key because she wants to be out on the
- 4:52Speaker 2: court all the time.
- 4:54Speaker 3: And then getting her.
- 4:56Speaker 2: You know, more support so that there's more people can tributing,
- 5:00Speaker 2: which takes some of the pressure off for her to
- 5:03Speaker 2: have to get thirty every night. So all those things.
- 5:08Speaker 2: You know, we haven't played a game yet that means anything,
- 5:14Speaker 2: And I'm excited about you know, I'm anxious to see
- 5:16Speaker 2: this Thursday what it looks like, you know, when it really.
- 5:18Speaker 1: Matters, right, I think Astional will certainly be one of
- 5:23Speaker 1: those that will contribute on a regular basis vastly improved.
- 5:27Speaker 1: Not just to shoot her now while she had forced
- 5:29Speaker 1: deals like for instance on Sunday, Now, well that changed
- 5:32Speaker 1: in the regular season. We'll see, but she just seems
- 5:35Speaker 1: to be one of those who obviously played a big
- 5:37Speaker 1: role last season and became that, you know, third or
- 5:40Speaker 1: fourth option during the course of the season last year.
- 5:44Speaker 2: Yeah, there were a lot of times when we had
- 5:48Speaker 2: her on the floor the entire forty minutes. She and
- 5:53Speaker 2: Page were our top two options on the perimeter. You know,
- 6:01Speaker 2: we we certainly asked her to do way more than
- 6:07Speaker 2: I think she thought she would have to.
- 6:08Speaker 3: Do coming here as the freshman.
- 6:11Speaker 2: But she responded, you know, she responded great, because you know,
- 6:16Speaker 2: she's she loves the game, really loves the game, and
- 6:19Speaker 2: it's tremendous competitor puts puts a lot of pressure on
- 6:24Speaker 2: herself to be really really good. So having that, you know,
- 6:33Speaker 2: as someone that can if we can get a consistent
- 6:38Speaker 2: shooting effort from Ash, I think that makes life a
- 6:44Speaker 2: little bit easier for Ali too, because then all of
- 6:46Speaker 2: a sudden, because we don't, you know, the one thing
- 6:49Speaker 2: about Ash and Ali throw them both in there together,
- 6:52Speaker 2: because they pretty much played the same position. It seems
- 6:54Speaker 2: like just a different size of the floor. They they
- 6:59Speaker 2: never has take to shoot it, which I think is great.
- 7:03Speaker 2: You know, so they're not shy, and as long as
- 7:09Speaker 2: they take good shots, I'm not I'm not worried about it.
- 7:13Speaker 3: But if if those two.
- 7:16Speaker 2: Combined can make four or five threes every night, that's
- 7:20Speaker 2: pretty darn good.
- 7:21Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean thirteen threes on Sunday. That does suddenly
- 7:24Speaker 1: just you know, I'm still getting into basketball mode here,
- 7:27Speaker 1: and you look at the end of the game, it's like, wow,
- 7:29Speaker 1: I mean you did that. I think five, five, or
- 7:31Speaker 1: no seven times last season the Huskies made at least
- 7:34Speaker 1: ten threes in a game and that was without one
- 7:37Speaker 1: of your best shooters, arguably and Hazy. We'll get to
- 7:41Speaker 1: that and we'll continue with more with the Gino on
- 7:43Speaker 1: the U kind of women's basketball coaches show here in
- 7:45Speaker 1: just a bit at on Learfield
