Speaker 1: I'm Don Armstrong, glad you could join us on this Saturday.
• 0:38
  Speaker 1: It's a Halloween spooktacular.
• 0:41
Speaker 1: Oh, did you like that?
• 0:43
  Speaker 1: I liked it.
• 0:43
Speaker 2: Did you write that?
• 0:44
Speaker 2: I still did at Walmart Through the self checkout.
• 0:49
  Speaker 2: The self checkout.
• 0:50
  Speaker 2: Do you know?
• 0:51
Speaker 2: They're going to close on Thanksgiving because they're giving all these self checkout employees the day off.
• 0:56
  Speaker 1: That's great.
• 0:56
  Speaker 1: I know that.
• 0:58
  Speaker 1: Thank you, Jeffrey.
• 0:59
Speaker 1: You always come up with things like that I've taken Tylenol, never mind that.
• 1:07
  Speaker 3: Mars.
• 1:07
Speaker 3: That's why he uses self checkout.
• 1:09
Speaker 3: He doesn't pay for it, he just takes it, take it, he's taking it.
• 1:11
  Speaker 3: All that too.
• 1:18
Speaker 1: Joining us now from I don't know where, but we're going to find out.
• 1:23
Speaker 1: Clint Cox, vw drag star, and let me rephrase that drag racing star and spokesperson for the crash dummies car club.
• 1:33
Speaker 1: Here he is, clint Cox.
• 1:35
Speaker 1: I said those words and I thought wait a minute, drag star.
• 1:39
Speaker 1: That doesn't make sense, that didn't quite work out the way I wanted it to.
• 1:43
Speaker 1: I'm sorry, clint, will you forgive me yeah.
• 1:47
Speaker 5: I think my dad would be less proud of me if I was.
• 1:51
Speaker 2: We always have to make our parents proud.
• 1:53
Speaker 1: So Mars came up with this excuse that we have to have in an audio format because something with your video.
• 2:00
Speaker 1: Where are you speaking to us from?
• 2:04
Speaker 5: I'm in Uless Texas, but it's raining up here pretty bad right now.
• 2:08
Speaker 5: I see now the spectrum guy is next door, so maybe there's something going on with the internet.
• 2:15
  Speaker 1: That's it.
• 2:15
  Speaker 1: It's raining, we're in Uless.
• 2:20
  Speaker 5: Yes, sir.
• 2:20
Speaker 1: Okay, we're in Uless.
• 2:25
Speaker 5: Uless is right next to DFW airport, so we're right between Dallas and Fort Worth.
• 2:32
Speaker 1: So not only do you have your internet out, you've got airplanes flying overhead, and that's probably the cause of the disconnect there between you.
• 2:42
Speaker 3: That's who we're going to blame it on.
• 2:43
Speaker 3: Anyway, we'll blame it on them.
• 2:44
Speaker 1: We'll blame it on Mars.
• 2:45
Speaker 1: So, clint, we understand that you just come back from a drag racing event.
• 2:54
Speaker 5: Yeah, we just got back from one in Medford, Oregon.
• 2:58
Speaker 5: We didn't take a car this time.
• 2:59
Speaker 5: We had just put on a big event at Extreme Raceway Park in Ferris.
• 3:05
Speaker 5: So a lot of these guys from the West Coast and up in the Oregon and Montana, Idaho, all that area they came down and raced with us.
• 3:18
Speaker 5: So we went up and hung out with these guys at one of their events up there.
• 3:26
Speaker 1: Was it a VW event?
• 3:27
Speaker 1: Yes, sir, okay, and you know, I assume that there is a click of you guys in various parts of the country and you all race against each other in certain venues.
• 3:45
Speaker 1: Am I correct by dreaming that up?
• 3:51
Speaker 5: Well, yeah, so obviously it's a drag race of Volkswagen and it takes a pretty special kind of individual and I use special lightly right.
• 4:04
Speaker 1: Is that a special needs kind of a person?
• 4:07
  Speaker 5: Yeah, kind of.
• 4:08
Speaker 5: You know you spend cubic dollars to make the world's slowest car try to go fast.
• 4:14
Speaker 5: So it definitely takes a special kind of person.
• 4:20
Speaker 5: But you know, like I grew up with Volkswagen, so to you know it makes sense for me I could be going a heck of a lot faster for a lot of money if I was racing something else for sure.
• 4:35
Speaker 3: But it wouldn't be nearly as cool, right.
• 4:38
Speaker 5: Well, you know, I probably would need help.
• 4:42
Speaker 5: I know the Volkswagen stuff.
• 4:47
Speaker 2: I've got a very good friend of mine, Todd Sheldon, up in Castle Rock Colorado Coming up in the mid-70s.
• 4:51
Speaker 2: He had a Volkswagen and a very nice car.
• 4:55
Speaker 2: We put scoops on the back for the intakes.
• 4:58
Speaker 2: We turned the wheels around or he did, Painted them white like wagon wheels.
• 5:01
Speaker 2: It was a cool little car that we twiddled around in, Did a lot of ski racks on the back, it was awesome.
• 5:07
Speaker 1: Are all of these drag cars that you guys run?
• 5:09
Speaker 1: Are they all full-bodied bugs from the 60s and 70s?
• 5:12
  Speaker 1: Most?
• 5:13
  Speaker 5: of them.
• 5:14
Speaker 5: There's some that race doom buggies like the fiberglass kind, and then there's a couple of them that race like sand rail type buggies, but for the most part, yeah, it's all bugs and carbon gears.
• 5:34
Speaker 5: And then there's some a few guys race the Type 3 like the Notchbacks.
• 5:39
  Speaker 1: I assume that they're all air-cooled engines.
• 5:42
  Speaker 1: Eh, oh yeah.
• 5:45
Speaker 5: Yeah, so we do allow water-cooled cars.
• 5:48
Speaker 5: We have a lady class that races with us and they're allowed to run water-cooled cars.
• 5:55
Speaker 5: There's just not a lot of water-cooled cars in this area that race, but I would say 98% of the cars are air-cooled.
• 6:03
Speaker 3: What's the power adder of choice Turbo, super nitrous.
• 6:09
Speaker 5: A couple guys run.
• 6:10
Speaker 5: We just had a big race here in September.
• 6:14
Speaker 5: We called it Texas versus the world.
• 6:16
Speaker 5: There was a couple guys here with superchargers.
• 6:22
Speaker 5: There was a couple guys here with nitrous.
• 6:24
Speaker 5: Most of the cars run turbos as a power adder.
• 6:28
Speaker 5: A lot of the cars are just naturally aspirated and they just run a lot of compression and race gas.
• 6:34
  Speaker 4: Wow, so what.
• 6:36
Speaker 5: We have a pro stock class that is naturally aspirated 9 pounds per cubic inch and those guys are running high-fives, low-sixes and the eighth mile on a naturally aspirated engine.
• 6:51
  Speaker 5: That's pretty great.
• 6:52
Speaker 2: What are the years of Volkswagen's that you see out there?
• 6:55
  Speaker 2: I mean, what's the earliest?
• 7:01
  Speaker 5: Early to mid-50s.
• 7:02
Speaker 5: Oh, my way back yeah.
• 7:05
  Speaker 1: Early to mid-50s.
• 7:06
Speaker 1: That's the one with the little bitty oval window in the back.
• 7:10
  Speaker 2: Well, that's a classic there.
• 7:11
Speaker 5: There was a couple with the split window and then there's several of the oval windows.
• 7:17
Speaker 2: Yeah, what is yours?
• 7:22
  Speaker 5: Mine's a 60.
• 7:25
Speaker 3: And why the choice of that time range of Volkswagen?
• 7:30
Speaker 3: Is there a benefit to that, be it chassis, engine weight versus one of the mid-60s, early 70s Volkswagen's?
• 7:41
Speaker 5: They just look cooler.
• 7:43
Speaker 4: I agree with that.
• 7:44
Speaker 1: Yeah, you got to have that, you got to factor that in, no Are the bodied cars on their own chassis.
• 7:51
Speaker 1: If you want to roll it down, the panel.
• 7:54
Speaker 5: A lot of them are Some of the full race cars.
• 7:57
Speaker 5: They're just a body on a full tube chassis, just like any race car.
• 8:02
Speaker 5: But most of the cars are still on their original pan, like mine.
• 8:08
  Speaker 5: I'm converting it.
• 8:09
Speaker 5: It's a swing axle car and I'm converting it over to.
• 8:12
Speaker 5: Irs and putting a bus gearbox in it with a fuel-injected blow-through turbo 2110.
• 8:20
Speaker 5: So it should run.
• 8:22
Speaker 5: It'll make anywhere from at the wheels probably 250 to 300 horsepower and run low to mid-7s probably.
• 8:34
  Speaker 3: And what?
• 8:37
Speaker 5: will it weigh With me in it?
• 8:38
Speaker 5: It weighs about 2,000 pounds.
• 8:40
Speaker 2: So, with all you just told us you're going to put on there, what is something like that cost to do A?
• 8:45
  Speaker 5: lot.
• 8:46
Speaker 5: Let me make sure my wife's not listening.
• 8:49
Speaker 4: There's always that criteria, yeah.
• 8:52
Speaker 5: Well, I have probably 9,000 or 10,000 in the long block and then it'll be another.
• 8:58
Speaker 5: By the time I get it started, probably another six or 7,000 and fuel injection.
• 9:07
Speaker 4: The loan block is not very big.
• 9:09
Speaker 2: So you are getting the Volkswagen in the settlement.
• 9:16
  Speaker 1: So fuel injection?
• 9:17
Speaker 1: Now the parts for this available.
• 9:19
Speaker 1: You don't have to make this stuff up.
• 9:21
Speaker 1: You don't have to cobble together a fuel injection system.
• 9:24
  Speaker 1: They've got it.
• 9:26
Speaker 1: The heads are already in everything.
• 9:29
Speaker 5: Oh yeah, there's a pretty good aftermarket support for them, especially the performance side.
• 9:36
Speaker 5: The factory type aftermarket stuff is kind of junk, but the performance aftermarket stuff is pretty readily available and pretty decent quality.
• 9:51
Speaker 1: I have to tell you that if I were going to have me a bug that had a hot rod motor in it, I would have to have it available to put it on the street.
• 10:02
Speaker 1: It would have to have a license plate on it so I could go and tear it up on the street.
• 10:07
Speaker 6: You want a sleeper.
• 10:08
  Speaker 1: It wouldn't be a sleeper.
• 10:09
Speaker 1: I would have a nice big long header hanging out the back of it.
• 10:12
Speaker 1: And it would sound wild, it would sound wild.
• 10:15
  Speaker 2: Yeah, now.
• 10:17
Speaker 5: I mean, up until recently I had stock wheels on it, that's been, the rear ones were just widened and I had I mean it was full body, you know, roll up and down windows and the has bumpers and everything and it was a total sleeper.
• 10:34
Speaker 1: Did you have it on the street at times?
• 10:37
Speaker 5: Oh, I still drive it to work and back.
• 10:39
Speaker 3: There you go, there you go, there you go, go out there and spank the occasional Mustang and Camaro, or the Porsche, just to look at your face, yeah, yeah.
• 10:49
Speaker 5: Yeah, that's our drag race inside of it.
• 10:53
Speaker 5: And then our car club.
• 10:55
Speaker 5: We've been doing, you know, just regular car club stuff, for I think we started it in late 2011.
• 11:04
Speaker 5: And that was like with a couple guys just hanging out in the garage drink a beer, and now we're up to like I don't know, 28 or 30 members.
• 11:18
Speaker 5: That's a lot of beer now.
• 11:21
Speaker 2: There's a theme to what he just said.
• 11:22
Speaker 2: A lot of car clubs start that way Beer and garage.
• 11:25
Speaker 5: Yeah, absolutely, and we, and so it's not like you know, we don't pay dues and we don't do?
• 11:32
  Speaker 5: You know?
• 11:33
Speaker 5: We're not super official, we have official members and we, you know everybody.
• 11:39
Speaker 5: How do you become a member of the press and, like I don't really know, you just hang out.
• 11:44
Speaker 4: Well, I know Bring the bring the keg.
• 11:47
  Speaker 2: Yeah.
• 11:47
Speaker 4: Yeah, well, we were trying to hook up the video.
• 11:48
Speaker 4: I noticed you got a nice logo there on your shirt.
• 11:53
  Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, that's a, that's a low.
• 11:56
Speaker 5: That shirt is got my car on the back.
• 11:58
  Speaker 5: That's my T shirt.
• 12:01
Speaker 4: I give out it when we go to the races, or you know, yeah, and you can find the car club on the on your Facebook page.
• 12:08
Speaker 4: You're out in Facebook.
• 12:09
Speaker 1: Now we've got, we've got an eighth mile drag strip here up at Houston Motorsports Park.
• 12:14
Speaker 1: Do you guys ever come down to Houston?
• 12:17
Speaker 5: Yeah, so there is some guys that race with us, that that are in the Houston area and they go over there.
• 12:25
Speaker 5: We tried to put a race on there and let me guess, let me guess that the owner gave you, gave you a hard time.
• 12:36
Speaker 5: No, he was pretty cool.
• 12:37
Speaker 5: But basically we have two classes.
• 12:41
Speaker 5: We have like a slick tire class and then we have a one for like street tires, like drag radial stuff, yeah, and and on.
• 12:51
Speaker 5: I guess during our time when we race, which is about like mostly summer Friday night, we could race, I think, but most of our races had been on Saturday.
• 13:05
Speaker 5: Well, saturday they run the dirt track, so the drag strip doesn't race and then.
• 13:10
Speaker 5: Sunday is slick tires only.
• 13:12
Speaker 5: And I said, hey, is there any way we can work it out?
• 13:16
Speaker 5: You know where we can allow, you know, drag radials to come on Sunday and race.
• 13:23
Speaker 5: And it was a no go.
• 13:26
Speaker 5: So we have not had a race in Houston yet.
• 13:29
  Speaker 4: Too bad, I don't.
• 13:31
  Speaker 4: I don't understand the difference.
• 13:32
Speaker 3: There's a big Volkswagen community here in Houston as well.
• 13:35
Speaker 3: A friend of mine, bruce Morris, is pretty active in it.
• 13:39
Speaker 5: Well, I know Bruce.
• 13:40
  Speaker 3: Yep, yeah, bruce.
• 13:41
Speaker 3: Yeah, I know, bruce Bruce actually took my job over at General Motors when I left.
• 13:47
Speaker 3: Good man, very smart man.
• 13:49
Speaker 1: Um, yeah, so what.
• 13:51
Speaker 5: I know him in it.
• 13:53
Speaker 1: Where do you go around here, or do we all have to come up there to Euless?
• 13:59
Speaker 3: Yeah, how far south do you come, we race.
• 14:03
  Speaker 4: Yeah.
• 14:06
Speaker 5: Well, that's what we call our home track extreme racer park.
• 14:09
Speaker 5: We race in Little River, in Temple, and then we've been up to Wichita Falls.
• 14:20
Speaker 5: We've been to Red Line.
• 14:24
Speaker 5: Before they closed there were some races at Feeder Creek, but other than that we haven't done.
• 14:34
Speaker 5: I would like to go down to what's the track down there, close to Louisiana Avadale, avadale.
• 14:40
  Speaker 4: Avadale, yeah, yeah.
• 14:42
Speaker 1: Well, why don't you guys have, don't they have races up there at uh, at Ennis?
• 14:47
Speaker 1: I mean, yeah, but you know, never race on on on that track.
• 14:55
  Speaker 5: We haven't yet.
• 14:56
Speaker 3: Isn't there race coming up?
• 14:58
  Speaker 3: Track time's expensive.
• 14:59
Speaker 4: Yeah, there's another one you ought to look at.
• 15:01
Speaker 4: Down in Lufkin they, uh, they just got NHRA.
• 15:04
Speaker 6: They just signed in their official NHRA now because one of the guys that was in Pine Valley town yeah, went up there and he's helping them elevate that track.
• 15:14
Speaker 5: I do have one of the guys that races in Houston with us.
• 15:18
Speaker 5: Um, he's, he's kind of working on the guys at Pine Valley to get a race down there.
• 15:23
Speaker 4: Yeah, so that'd be close.
• 15:25
Speaker 4: They've been bringing in a lot of stuff.
• 15:26
Speaker 4: They've been real active since the guy and I can't think of his name that went up there from Baytown to help him out.
• 15:32
Speaker 4: He was had some do with running the track out here not Angel, but somebody below that a I would yeah, well, and a lot of it too is just figuring out how to get the track Right.
• 15:45
Speaker 5: So when we do our points races, we just uh kind of fill in with another event that's going on.
• 15:51
Speaker 5: And you know Galen that runs for track.
• 15:55
Speaker 5: He's like what do you all want from me?
• 15:56
Speaker 5: Nothing, we're going to do our own race.
• 15:58
Speaker 5: We'll do our own entry fee and our own payout.
• 16:00
Speaker 5: We'll bring our own trophies and stuff.
• 16:02
Speaker 5: Just give us a couple of lanes and let us fill in and sort of crash into party.
• 16:07
Speaker 4: It's kind of like the, the modified production guys kind of do that.
• 16:10
  Speaker 4: Yeah, nostalgia.
• 16:12
Speaker 5: Yeah, Kind of like that.
• 16:13
Speaker 5: We have a one of our guys that races with us and he's actually in our, in my, in the crash, and he's also.
• 16:22
Speaker 5: He races in that modified production class.
• 16:25
Speaker 3: Yeah, they're pretty fun.
• 16:26
Speaker 3: We've had them on the show a number of times.
• 16:28
Speaker 3: Pretty fun to watch.
• 16:29
Speaker 3: Uh, watch that type of racing, you know, leave on the clutch, kind of stuff.
• 16:35
  Speaker 1: It is.
• 16:35
Speaker 1: It is fun to watch and, um, yeah, and I I kind of like the, the fill in thing.
• 16:41
Speaker 1: It's good for the track because they make a little money which they need that they normally wouldn't make when these guys come to town.
• 16:48
Speaker 3: Plus, they bring a different crowd to the track.
• 16:50
Speaker 1: It's good for the sport.
• 16:51
Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, absolutely it's, it's fun.
• 16:56
Speaker 5: And I come out to watch the Volkswagen get to see the other stuff for the set, the track that they normally wouldn't see.
• 17:01
Speaker 5: And then the people that are out there for other stuff, when they see the Volkswagen they totally freak out.
• 17:05
Speaker 1: Yeah, those Volkswagen people are off the hook, boy I will never forget going down to Houston international dragway, wasteway, whatever it was down there in Dickinson back in the day.
• 17:15
Speaker 1: That, uh, the first time I ever saw a Volkswagen bug on the drag strip and I thought, oh my God, I can't believe that this car is as fast as it is wheels up.
• 17:27
Speaker 1: Oh, it was unbelievable and I'll never forget it.
• 17:31
Speaker 4: I was up at uh Eastex up there in Porter.
• 17:34
  Speaker 6: Yes.
• 17:35
Speaker 4: The first time I saw a Volkswagen dragster.
• 17:36
Speaker 4: I mean it's the little thing.
• 17:38
Speaker 4: I mean, of course, it's real small, real low to the ground and it looked like a bullet.
• 17:41
Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean just yep.
• 17:44
  Speaker 1: It sounded fun.
• 17:45
Speaker 5: We had a guy.
• 17:46
Speaker 5: We had a guy here.
• 17:48
Speaker 5: There were several cars that were really fast at that Texas work versus the world event and we're going to do that every year.
• 17:55
Speaker 5: That is a that's going to be an annual event.
• 17:58
Speaker 5: Now up there at extreme, but one of the guys from California and you all may have heard of it, I don't know His name is Eric Calabrese in the car is called the red Baron.
• 18:09
Speaker 5: Um, he is fast as time it says.
• 18:14
Speaker 5: The car's been sitting for years.
• 18:16
Speaker 5: He got it out and ran it at the buggerama event in Sacramento like two weeks before he came to Texas, and that was the first time I'd been on the track and I'd say six or eight years probably.
• 18:28
Speaker 5: And then he came down here and ended up winning our outlaw class with a time of like five, 35 at like 128 miles an hour or something, and the car was it's wicked fast.
• 18:44
  Speaker 5: Well, it's just a.
• 18:45
  Speaker 5: It's just a it's just a it's just a.
• 18:46
  Speaker 5: It's just a.
• 18:46
  Speaker 5: It's just a.
• 18:46
Speaker 5: It's a air cooled Volkswagen engine with a giant turbo on it.
• 18:52
Speaker 1: So how do our fans, if you want to call them that, uh get a hold of you and find out your schedule and become involved whatever level they want to?
• 19:02
Speaker 1: How do you do that?
• 19:03
Speaker 1: You got a Facebook page or something.
• 19:06
Speaker 5: Yeah, so the it's kind of kind of difficult but but it's a.
• 19:11
