Latest / The Gospel Briefing / Trump Pauses Iran Strikes, Seattle Festival Shooting, Europe Burns
Transcript
- The war paused. The question didn't. This morning, President Trump is holding off on a major escalation against Iran, weighing diplomacy against a shrinking stockpile of interceptors. Three people are dead after gunfire tore through a food festival at the Seattle Center. And hundreds of thousands are fleeing historic wildfires across France and Spain, in one of Europe's largest evacuations since World War Two. This is The Gospel Briefing. I'm Charles King. Understand the news. Keep your peace. Follow Christ. For the moment, the U.S. and Iran are not shooting at each other. Two sources tell ABC News the president was ready to authorize a series of strikes on Friday. Then he met with top advisers. Then he held off. Inside that meeting, officials talked about something the White House rarely discusses in public — the Pentagon's dwindling stockpile of Patriot anti-missile interceptors. Ambassador Mike Waltz says Secretary Hegseth "inherited a depleted situation." The president denies any shortage. Trump told Axios he is willing to return to "very strong military action" if talks fail. Quote: "Either it goes fast or not at all." Overnight, Saudi Arabia intercepted drones from Iraq. Jordan shot down two drones out of Iranian territory. Oil prices dropped on the pause. Ecclesiastes says there is a time for war and a time for peace. Wisdom is knowing which moment you are actually in. Restraint is not weakness. Escalation is not strength. Christians pray for rulers to have discernment, because human lives hang on the difference. If this helps you face the news with clarity instead of anxiety, follow The Gospel Briefing now. A family walked to a food festival last night. Some of them did not walk home. Around six p.m. Sunday, gunfire erupted at the Bite of Seattle at the Seattle Center. Police say two people were shooting at each other in the middle of a crowd. Three people were killed — a nineteen-year-old man, a forty-four-year-old man, and a fifty-six-year-old woman. Four others were wounded, including a boy. One suspect is in custody. The other is still out there. Two guns were recovered at the scene. Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson called it "an act of horrific violence." She said no one should have to weigh the risk of being shot before gathering with friends. She's right. This is not the way it was meant to be. Genesis tells us Cain killed Abel in a field. The first city was built by a murderer. Human violence is not a modern problem. It is an ancient one, and Scripture is honest about it. But Revelation twenty-one promises a city where death itself is gone. That's why Christians grieve, but not without hope. We name the evil. We pray for the wounded. And we long for the King who ends this for good. Now to Europe. Over three hundred thousand people have been forced from their homes across France and Spain. The European Union is calling it one of the largest evacuations on the continent since World War Two. More than two hundred fifty thousand have been evacuated in France — two hundred twenty thousand in the Gironde region alone. In Spain, another seventy-nine thousand have fled. Thirty thousand more are confined to their homes. France's meteorological service says June was the hottest ever recorded there. Rainfall ran nearly fifty percent below average. Spain has already seen six times the burned area of last year at this point. Thirteen people died in a single fire in Almeria earlier this month. The EU has sent planes and helicopters from seven countries to help France, and six more to Spain. Watch what happens when the fire is bigger than any one nation can handle. Borders soften. Neighbors show up. Czechia sends planes to France. Turkey helps Spain. Galatians six, verse two says, "Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ." That law is not just for the church. It is written into how God made the world to work. When suffering shows up, we were made to run toward each other. This week, Europe is doing exactly that. Three quick briefs. The murder trial of Lindsay Clancy began this morning in Massachusetts. She is accused of killing her three young children in her Duxbury home in twenty twenty-three. There is no clean take on this one. Pray for that courtroom, for that family, and for a jury carrying weight most of us cannot imagine. The CDC says U.S. measles cases have now surpassed all of last year's total. A disease we once declared eliminated is back — largely through gaps in vaccination and international travel. Stewardship of the body is a Christian concern. Talk with your doctor. Talk with your church. And Christianity Today has a striking new piece on filmmaker Christopher Nolan, arguing his obsession with time, memory, and moral weight amounts to what the writer calls a "dark night of the soul." A reminder that even secular art keeps circling the questions only the gospel finally answers. This episode is presented by Bible Copilot. Today's verse is Ecclesiastes three, verses one and eight. Open Bible Copilot and ask, "What does Ecclesiastes mean when it says there is a time for war and a time for peace?" You'll get a clear, verse-backed answer — the context, what Solomon is actually claiming about God's sovereignty over history, and how Christians should hold that today. Three questions each day are free. Start at mybiblecopilot dot com slash gospel. Here's today's Verse of the Day. Ecclesiastes three, verses one and eight. "For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven... a time for war, and a time for peace." Iran. Seattle. The fires in Europe. Every headline this morning sits somewhere on that spectrum. And every one of those seasons is under the hand of a God who is never surprised, never late, and never absent. Thanks for listening to The Gospel Briefing. If today helped you, send it to one person who needs steady news and steadier hope. The season is His. The outcome is His. And He is good. I'll see you tomorrow.
