- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, your home for
- 0:06Speaker 1: deer hunting news, stories and strategies, and now your host,
- 0:12Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon. Welcome to the Wired to Hunt Podcast. I'm
- 0:17Speaker 1: your host, Mark Kenyan. This this episode number two and
- 0:20Speaker 1: in seventy three into day. In the show, we've got
- 0:23Speaker 1: a phone conversation from our annual Iowa shed hunting camp
- 0:26Speaker 1: in which we're talking shed hunting off season, white tail
- 0:29Speaker 1: prep and lessons learned, and we're tackling a little bit
- 0:32Speaker 1: of listener Q and A. All right, Welcome to the
- 0:38Speaker 1: Wired to Hunt podcast, brought to you by Onyx and
- 0:42Speaker 1: today I am sitting in Iowa for a kind of
- 0:49Speaker 1: unique podcast of sorts. We're actually sitting in a truck
- 0:52Speaker 1: outside a restaurant. We just had a fish fry tonight
- 0:57Speaker 1: and uh i'll hear with my buddy Ross Hass and
- 1:01Speaker 1: my buddy uncle Peter. Hello. Thank you guys for for
- 1:07Speaker 1: making this work. We're struggling with the post fish fry
- 1:11Speaker 1: kind of food coma. What did you say that's hard forbid? Yeah,
- 1:18Speaker 1: So if Ross sleeps his way through this one, forgive him.
- 1:21Speaker 1: Um well, it would be the first time Ross slept
- 1:25Speaker 1: through a podcast of yours. Today, I digress, We'll played.
- 1:30Speaker 1: So So I did the crazy thing today. I was
- 1:33Speaker 1: planning on coming out to Iowa for an extended shed
- 1:37Speaker 1: hunting trips slash do some podcasts things like that, and
- 1:42Speaker 1: I just had a bunch of funky things come up
- 1:45Speaker 1: with my schedule, um where I had to go to
- 1:47Speaker 1: some other places and the time to do the Iowa
- 1:49Speaker 1: trip got kind of cut. So I was sitting here
- 1:53Speaker 1: the other night last night thinking myself, if I what
- 1:56Speaker 1: am I gonna do? I'm not I'm basically not going
- 1:58Speaker 1: to be able to go to Iowa four the shed
- 2:00Speaker 1: hunting trip that we've been talking about at all, unless
- 2:03Speaker 1: I somehow try to fit it in this weekend. Um.
- 2:06Speaker 1: But I only had one day. I thought I could
- 2:08Speaker 1: get away with that. So at about ten thirty last night,
- 2:13Speaker 1: I decided, you know what, I'm gonna wake up at
- 2:15Speaker 1: three thirty am tomorrow morning. I'm gonna drive this so
- 2:19Speaker 1: many hours, six or so hours to Iowa and we're
- 2:24Speaker 1: in a shed hunt for the day. How how's that going? Well, well, no,
- 2:30Speaker 1: well it's not the answer, um. But the other thing
- 2:35Speaker 1: is I'm gonna try to do this all day shed
- 2:37Speaker 1: hunt and then leave still tonight. So that put a
- 2:40Speaker 1: lot of pressure on today's shed hunt on us. That's
- 2:42Speaker 1: to your point, Peter, Yes, yes I found one shed, Um,
- 2:52Speaker 1: but I think we had we gotta set the stage
- 2:54Speaker 1: is a little bit more because a couple of things
- 2:55Speaker 1: are worth noting today. I do want to talk about
- 2:58Speaker 1: our shed hunting trip. I do talk a little bit
- 3:00Speaker 1: about how the shed season in general has gone, because
- 3:03Speaker 1: we're kinda kind of peeking shed season right now for
- 3:06Speaker 1: most people, and then it's going to kind of start
- 3:08Speaker 1: transitioning over turkeys here soon. Um. Speaking of turkeys to Peter,
- 3:13Speaker 1: I thought, you know, last year at our shed camp
- 3:16Speaker 1: are Iowah shed Camp podcast, you were with me and
- 3:19Speaker 1: Ross and Ben, and we spent a decent amount of
- 3:22Speaker 1: time talking about, you know, you're hunting journey up to
- 3:26Speaker 1: that point and some of the things going to last season.
- 3:28Speaker 1: So if you'll let me, I want to grill you
- 3:31Speaker 1: a little bit about how your two thousand eighteen season went.
- 3:33Speaker 1: Sure we can do that. So your crowd is going
- 3:36Speaker 1: to love that, So let's have So I do want
- 3:39Speaker 1: to do that, and then we've got a couple of
- 3:40Speaker 1: audience questions I wanted to um tackle if we've got time.
- 3:46Speaker 1: So the shed hunt though. I think you were seeing these, Peter,
- 3:51Speaker 1: but tell me if you didn't. Ross has been sending
- 3:53Speaker 1: our group text over the last few weeks, you know,
- 3:56Speaker 1: frequent messages saying how good it's going to be this
- 4:00Speaker 1: year for the shed trip Um specifically one honey hole
- 4:04Speaker 1: of of of the Rosses that we've been shed hunting
- 4:08Speaker 1: for a number of years now, and he's like, this
- 4:11Speaker 1: is the year it's gonna be double digits on such
- 4:13Speaker 1: and such a place sheds acres. Yeah, and so I
- 4:20Speaker 1: specifically was thinking last night as I'm laying in that
- 4:23Speaker 1: ten thirty debating whether or not I should do this.
- 4:25Speaker 1: Any other year it would be stupid to drive all
- 4:28Speaker 1: the way to Iowa for a one day shed, but
- 4:31Speaker 1: this is the year double digit sheds in one spot,
- 4:34Speaker 1: Ross promised me. So I did it last night last night.
- 4:39Speaker 1: I was getting ready for bed, actually I was just
- 4:42Speaker 1: starting to lay down. Mark text me, so it's gonna
- 4:45Speaker 1: be good, right, And I said, yeah, that's kind of
- 4:48Speaker 1: really good. I mean i'd come if how are you? Yep?
- 4:51Speaker 1: That was me like doing a little self uh self debate,
- 4:55Speaker 1: like is this a stupid idea or not? Well, if
- 4:58Speaker 1: we could find the guy's footprints and we could figure
- 5:01Speaker 1: out who's there before us. Unfortunately, you might have a
- 5:05Speaker 1: good idea of what they they found, so we were
- 5:08Speaker 1: I would have to concur with Ross. I drive by
- 5:10Speaker 1: the same spots and it was just pounded with deer tracks,
- 5:16Speaker 1: thick seedars, a lot of ridge lines, and just standing
- 5:19Speaker 1: standing food of many varieties for them to eat. And
- 5:22Speaker 1: I would say we would have found at least fifteen.
- 5:24Speaker 1: It wouldn't goes high as twenty. Yeah, so it might
- 5:29Speaker 1: have been good. It would have been a good number
- 5:30Speaker 1: for us. Why Ross, did you think it was gonna
- 5:33Speaker 1: be so good? Um, it's just a good The woods
- 5:37Speaker 1: is just a good wintering kind of like betting area
- 5:40Speaker 1: for the deer. Like Peter said, it's got a lot
- 5:42Speaker 1: of thick cedars, and there's a lot of sun exposed areas,
- 5:46Speaker 1: and it's the closest cover to where they were feeding.
- 5:49Speaker 1: So there's a bunch of standing beans that got left
- 5:52Speaker 1: in because they got flooded or something like that in
- 5:55Speaker 1: the fall, so that you were just piling in there,
- 5:58Speaker 1: just pounded it. So when would drive by and check
- 6:00Speaker 1: it at night, there be I'd see deer, No no problem,
- 6:06Speaker 1: just from the road. That's crazy. So I was really excited,
- 6:09Speaker 1: you know, and so and now we're just getting that
- 6:12Speaker 1: snow melt. We had some warm temps this week, had
- 6:15Speaker 1: a lot of snow on the ground last week. So
- 6:18Speaker 1: we decided, well, now it's probably the best time because
- 6:22Speaker 1: everybody else has been watching this place too, and I'm
- 6:24Speaker 1: sure other people have permission um to walk it. So
- 6:28Speaker 1: we thought, well, let's let's try to do it as
- 6:30Speaker 1: soon as possible. And that's why that's why we told
- 6:32Speaker 1: you twenty ships tomorrow, Mark, you should probably come down here.
- 6:36Speaker 1: I thought Mary, which I like to call her Mary,
- 6:39Speaker 1: but her name is Sarah. I thought she had we
- 6:42Speaker 1: had v I P access VP. It's actually Stacy, but Stacy. Yeah,
- 6:47Speaker 1: I'm not sure. Well, yeah, we're going to be some
- 6:51Speaker 1: secret What did happen with that ross? Yeah, well I
- 6:54Speaker 1: don't know that. I mean, super nice lady and uh,
- 6:58Speaker 1: grateful at you. Let's just walk in there it. Unfortunately,
- 7:00Speaker 1: we show up and like within a matter of like
- 7:03Speaker 1: thirty seconds of getting there, there's boot tracks everywhere, pretty
- 7:07Speaker 1: fresh ones too, oh really really fresh. And then and
- 7:10Speaker 1: then not just fresh, but then boot tracks that were
- 7:12Speaker 1: old too. So somebody had been in their ton. It's
- 7:15Speaker 1: probably one of those things where you got permission hunt
- 7:17Speaker 1: years ago or permission years ago to do something, and
- 7:19Speaker 1: you don't always reask, You just kind of assume you
- 7:22Speaker 1: can go. Perhaps, Yeah, well it was fun still, Yes,
- 7:26Speaker 1: it used to be. It used to be fun. But
- 7:28Speaker 1: then people started talking about shed hunting time and it's
- 7:31Speaker 1: get a big shed rally, rally, look awesome, this is
- 7:35Speaker 1: anybody go out and do it. Yeah, you guys don't
- 7:38Speaker 1: like the competition, huh. And then we go we go
- 7:40Speaker 1: shed hunting, and then we find a bunch of boot tracks,
- 7:43Speaker 1: get all discouraged, and then hey, let's have a podcast
- 7:45Speaker 1: about how awesome shed honey is. That'd be great. Let's
- 7:49Speaker 1: talk about the vicious little tongue in cheek they're about. Yeah, um, so,
- 7:55Speaker 1: so what let's break down where we we did find
- 7:58Speaker 1: some sheds though, and folks listening that are trying to
- 8:01Speaker 1: learn a little bit more about finding sheds, I think
- 8:03Speaker 1: it's worth noting where we found them. Um So I
- 8:06Speaker 1: found one shed. Now this is on a separate property
- 8:09Speaker 1: that we went to earlier in the day before Peter
- 8:11Speaker 1: was able to join us. Um, but where I found
- 8:13Speaker 1: it was actually down in the bottom, right near a
- 8:17Speaker 1: creek crossing. But there was a single, lone cedar down
- 8:20Speaker 1: there in this bottom and it was there was snow
- 8:23Speaker 1: throughout the rest of the bottom except four underneath this cedar.
- 8:26Speaker 1: And I just I saw that lone tree there, and
- 8:29Speaker 1: I thought to myself, that's worth checking for a shed.
- 8:32Speaker 1: Walked over there and walked, walked, looked at the big opening,
- 8:35Speaker 1: didn't see anything, kept walking and then stopped and for
- 8:38Speaker 1: some reason turn and looked back the way that the
- 8:40Speaker 1: way I came. I think, because there's all these trails coming,
- 8:43Speaker 1: I'm like, God, there has to be a shed around here.
- 8:44Speaker 1: So I stopped, took a second look, and then somehow
- 8:48Speaker 1: I had missed. It's kind of a small four point
- 8:50Speaker 1: side was sitting down there underneath that cedar laying there.
- 8:53Speaker 1: I saw it from the different angle. Um, but that's
- 8:57Speaker 1: one of those things I think you guys would all agree. Um,
- 9:00Speaker 1: when you see those lone cedar trees just always seems
- 9:03Speaker 1: to be something worth checking, do you think, Yeah, other
- 9:05Speaker 1: properties I shed hunted around here, Uh, kind of late season,
- 9:09Speaker 1: I'll go hit all those kind of stranded cedar trees
- 9:12Speaker 1: that are kind of up on next to prairie grass
- 9:15Speaker 1: and stuff, and you get pretty lucky. I've found a
- 9:17Speaker 1: lot of green like basically horns out there. For a
- 9:19Speaker 1: couple of years, nobody saw, especially on a hard winter
- 9:22Speaker 1: when when the deer browsing cedar cedars more than usual,
- 9:27Speaker 1: like in a mild winter, they might not touch them
- 9:29Speaker 1: really at all. But this winter was an exception, and
- 9:32Speaker 1: so cedars are probably a good good place to look
- 9:35Speaker 1: this year. Um, so then we're else, we're whof? So
- 9:39Speaker 1: I found mine? First? No, you found the first one ross? Yeah,
- 9:42Speaker 1: that little dink. You found a spike? Right? Ye? Where
- 9:45Speaker 1: was that fence crossing? Fence crossing? Okay, second shed was
- 9:50Speaker 1: underneath the cedar. Third shed of the day was what
- 9:55Speaker 1: does that mean? It was that old one? Hold that
- 9:58Speaker 1: old one. That was if you can imagine a prairie
- 10:03Speaker 1: grass field, a gravel road and then like that kind
- 10:06Speaker 1: of thicket before a fence line. It was kind of
- 10:09Speaker 1: going through the thicket jumped the fence and that's why
- 10:12Speaker 1: I found it. So it was that was that was
- 10:14Speaker 1: probably three years old. That was considered a what would
- 10:17Speaker 1: I call it a chalk on a chalk on that
- 10:19Speaker 1: one It was cracked and everything. So yeah, it was.
- 10:24Speaker 1: It was that was that was there quite a while
- 10:26Speaker 1: quite well, yeah, three years or so. Shed number four
- 10:30Speaker 1: was you as well, Peter R. Yeah, that was my nickname.
- 10:33Speaker 1: Perimeter Pete. I like to walk to a perimeter. If
- 10:36Speaker 1: you can imagine this property having a a fence line
- 10:38Speaker 1: on the other side of private ground, we can't walk,
- 10:41Speaker 1: that's all prairie. Uh, and the deer come out of
- 10:43Speaker 1: this array of cedars and ridges, and I was just
- 10:47Speaker 1: on the edge in between. It's like twenty yards maybe
- 10:50Speaker 1: of just mode grass between the fence line and the
- 10:53Speaker 1: road on a road basically. So yeah, you guys, you
- 10:58Speaker 1: guys traveled a long ways. Mark, I said, you go
- 11:01Speaker 1: go get the good stuff and I'll just sit out
- 11:03Speaker 1: here in the perimeter. And um, the last time we
- 11:07Speaker 1: actually shout it here together, I did the same thing,
- 11:10Speaker 1: just on the other side of the road. You know.
- 11:11Speaker 1: It's funny, right, you always do this. You always say
- 11:13Speaker 1: I'll go get the low hanging fruit, and you always
- 11:15Speaker 1: walk the edge and then you find sheds on the edge.
- 11:18Speaker 1: So today, before you arrive, Ross said, hey, don't let
- 11:21Speaker 1: Pete walk the low hanging fruit. You make sure you
- 11:23Speaker 1: get it this time. Yeah, well it didn't happen to it,
- 11:27Speaker 1: and then somehow we we self sabotaged. Didn't let you
- 11:31Speaker 1: take it anyway. Ross was like, when are you gonna
- 11:33Speaker 1: get here? Said, well, why don't you guys just start walking?
- 11:35Speaker 1: Maybe walk the stuff on the other side of the
- 11:37Speaker 1: road for a time. When I get there, I'll just
- 11:38Speaker 1: walk the green stuff and then you guys meet up
- 11:41Speaker 1: with me at some point. But he didn't like that idea. No.
- 11:43Speaker 1: Rass specifically said, we can't let him go free range.
- 11:47Speaker 1: Free range, Peter is trouble. He didn't have any high
- 11:50Speaker 1: visible colors on today. You had camouflage on. That's not
- 11:56Speaker 1: like you can't keep tracking when you got camel Yeah,
- 11:59Speaker 1: hunt in life. I think we talked about that last year.
- 12:01Speaker 1: How you you tend to wear high vis orange shirts? Well,
- 12:04Speaker 1: why don't you guys know where Matt? So when you
- 12:05Speaker 1: gotta do when you got to come over to do
- 12:07Speaker 1: filming for me? When I got this monster shed, I
- 12:09Speaker 1: want you to see me and kind of get it. Hey,
- 12:11Speaker 1: there he is track them down? High is high is
- 12:15Speaker 1: pi number four looks like the orange the orange on
- 12:19Speaker 1: your hat matches orange on my shirt, so it's true
- 12:22Speaker 1: combination Shed Number five was ross. Yep, that one. Not
- 12:28Speaker 1: much to that one, except for I was just right
- 12:30Speaker 1: in the timber where they where they have been quite
- 12:34Speaker 1: a bit. It was on the just on the other
- 12:35Speaker 1: side of a stump. So it was one of those
- 12:36Speaker 1: ones where if he would have just went to the
- 12:38Speaker 1: right a little bit, you probably would have missed it.
- 12:41Speaker 1: Why do you think that shed was there? Do you
- 12:43Speaker 1: think that they're dear beded there or is that just transitioning.
- 12:46Speaker 1: I think just transitioning. I don't think they're in that
- 12:48Speaker 1: spot specifically. I don't think there were any beds. But um,
- 12:52Speaker 1: like you saw him. We went to the other side.
- 12:53Speaker 1: They were crossing that fence and coming into that timber
- 12:56Speaker 1: quite a bit from there, and I think that dear
- 12:58Speaker 1: maybe was moving in or it was just up in
- 13:01Speaker 1: browsing after being laid down. But how many shows do
- 13:04Speaker 1: you have so far? That's your ross? Uh? Something like that? Yeah, Peter.
- 13:10Speaker 1: I found a match set on some city property in
- 13:13Speaker 1: the town I live in. And I found one when
- 13:16Speaker 1: I was I don't know if this is a tip
- 13:19Speaker 1: or not, but I found one one I was looking
- 13:23Speaker 1: at the property potentially to purchase. I was walking and
- 13:25Speaker 1: I just found one. So that was kind of cool.
- 13:28Speaker 1: There you are you gonna buy a farm one of
- 13:31Speaker 1: these days, I think. So we were talking in the
- 13:34Speaker 1: past about as a business grows, a lot of things
- 13:38Speaker 1: are happening. And if you're self employed, it's just getting
- 13:41Speaker 1: the right financial people in your life with regards to
- 13:44Speaker 1: accountant and um, making a strong decision what you can afford,
- 13:47Speaker 1: what you can't, and knowing what you can I can
- 13:51Speaker 1: do and I think that's the biggest thing. So, yes,
- 13:54Speaker 1: there will be something. I'm hoping to get it closer
- 13:57Speaker 1: to Ross, so I gotta be a little bit more patient. So, um,
- 14:00Speaker 1: something that Ross does and this is actually one of
- 14:02Speaker 1: the next things I wanted to bring up. Something that
- 14:05Speaker 1: Ross does really well, um, and that we got to
- 14:08Speaker 1: take advantage of today was getting permission. And you get
- 14:15Speaker 1: so much shed hunting permission. Ross. I don't know how much.
- 14:17Speaker 1: I bet you have thousands of acres of shed hunting ground.
- 14:20Speaker 1: Would you say that's probably true? Yeah, just just in
- 14:24Speaker 1: one one one person. Actually, well yeah, look quite a
- 14:27Speaker 1: bit and a lot of it's not good for looking.
- 14:31Speaker 1: But yeah, if you had up all though acres that
- 14:33Speaker 1: you have access to, you yeah and so and then
- 14:35Speaker 1: you also have a lot of hunting permission UM, and
- 14:37Speaker 1: I just finished writing an article for the Meat Eater
- 14:41Speaker 1: dot com about UM some of the things I've learned
- 14:44Speaker 1: about gaining hunting permission, some of the things that I
- 14:48Speaker 1: use personally, and other things I've learned from some of
- 14:50Speaker 1: the folks I've interviewed on the podcast, stuff like that.
- 14:52Speaker 1: So this whole permission's thing is on my mind, especially
- 14:56Speaker 1: today now that we took advantage of. Interestingly, the spot
- 14:59Speaker 1: that we shed hunting today, the Honeyhole spot, was a
- 15:02Speaker 1: location that when I came out here, maybe six years
- 15:07Speaker 1: ago or five years ago, I was coming out to
- 15:10Speaker 1: try to get permission to hunt, and you had there
- 15:14Speaker 1: were a few places that you would recommend that maybe
- 15:16Speaker 1: I should check with because you've you know, driven by.
- 15:19Speaker 1: You looked at the map and you thought looked pretty good.
- 15:21Speaker 1: So I added those spots to my list. And this
- 15:24Speaker 1: is a property that I had on that list. And
- 15:26Speaker 1: I knocked on this ladies door, and I don't think
- 15:29Speaker 1: she was home, or maybe she was home. I don't
- 15:32Speaker 1: remember what happened, but I didn't get permission. I know that, UM.
- 15:35Speaker 1: But later we returned, and then I think you returned
- 15:38Speaker 1: and got shed hunting permission on. Um. But this is
- 15:42Speaker 1: all to say now that I'm thinking about this whole
- 15:44Speaker 1: permission thing, and now that some people maybe are out
- 15:46Speaker 1: there right now trying to get somewhere to look for
- 15:47Speaker 1: sheds over the next couple of weeks. UM, we've never
- 15:51Speaker 1: talked to you. I don't think about what you'd like,
- 15:54Speaker 1: how you pull it off so well, Um, is there
- 15:57Speaker 1: anything you can share about your process for getting permission,
- 16:00Speaker 1: how you how you do it? Because if I remember right,
- 16:03Speaker 1: correct me if I'm wrong, but you were not into
- 16:05Speaker 1: it right away, like you were kind of nervous about it.
- 16:08Speaker 1: You didn't want to knock on doors when you first,
- 16:10Speaker 1: you know, start coming out in Iowa with everybody, Corey,
- 16:13Speaker 1: I don't think anybody really likes doing it. I still don't, UM,
- 16:18Speaker 1: But I remember the one I remember being with a
- 16:21Speaker 1: friend of mine. His name is Josh, and he he
- 16:23Speaker 1: was bugging the heck out of me. He was riding
- 16:25Speaker 1: passenger and he was telling me pulling here, pulling here,
- 16:27Speaker 1: pulling here, and I just didn't want to do it,
- 16:28Speaker 1: and and then finally pulled in there. And of course
- 16:32Speaker 1: most people are genuinely pretty friendly and and uh, I
- 16:37Speaker 1: mean we talked to the guy for thirty minutes, and
- 16:39Speaker 1: he was showing us all of his stuff, and I
- 16:42Speaker 1: don't know, we were talking about everything, and then one
- 16:44Speaker 1: thing leads to another, and then he mentioned somebody and
- 16:46Speaker 1: then you go talk to them, and then and then
- 16:49Speaker 1: as you start to learn learn about the area and
- 16:52Speaker 1: you get to know people, just more doors open up.
- 16:54Speaker 1: Pretty much when I go about it, I don't I
- 16:56Speaker 1: don't expect when I go to the door, I don't
- 16:59Speaker 1: expect anything for anybody right when I go to the door. Um,
- 17:03Speaker 1: I just want to try to build a relationship, let
- 17:05Speaker 1: them know who I am, you know that they can
- 17:07Speaker 1: trust me kind of thing. So like, if I go
- 17:09Speaker 1: to a door this year, I'm not gonna expect to
- 17:10Speaker 1: get anything out of it. I don't. I don't expect
- 17:13Speaker 1: to be able to shed hunt or hunt or anything
- 17:15Speaker 1: like that. But but just having a presence and getting
- 17:18Speaker 1: to know people. And then one of the best things too,
- 17:20Speaker 1: is getting to know people in the area. If you
- 17:23Speaker 1: get to know him pretty well, people always ask you
- 17:25Speaker 1: where you're from or how you end up in the area.
- 17:27Speaker 1: And if you know Joe Shmo down the road really well,
- 17:30Speaker 1: I mean, it makes it easier to talk to other
- 17:32Speaker 1: people as well. Yeah, I mean I talked to people. Yeah,
- 17:36Speaker 1: go to the door and you know, okay, and so
- 17:39Speaker 1: and so goes to church with so and so, and
- 17:41Speaker 1: oh I know him, and then you get talking and
- 17:43Speaker 1: then it just one thing leads in another. And I
- 17:45Speaker 1: think that helps out quite a bit first as just
- 17:47Speaker 1: being some some guy that just wants something from somebody
- 17:51Speaker 1: all the time. So so when you're saying that you're
- 17:54Speaker 1: not expecting to get permission of any kind the first
- 17:57Speaker 1: time you go up there, what are you asking about? No?
- 18:00Speaker 1: I mean I ask, you know, like I asked right away.
- 18:03Speaker 1: But sometimes a no isn't like a no forever. It's
- 18:06Speaker 1: just a note right then too. Um do you go
- 18:10Speaker 1: back every year or multiple years? But I know I have.
- 18:13Speaker 1: But usually people usually know pretty quickly whether it will
- 18:16Speaker 1: whether it's something you should should ask again, or if
- 18:20Speaker 1: it's you know you should return or um. But just
- 18:24Speaker 1: getting a good conversation started. I wouldn't beat around the
- 18:26Speaker 1: bush too much. Let him know who you are, how
- 18:29Speaker 1: you ended up in the area. They always want to
- 18:31Speaker 1: know why the heck you're at their door. Don't stand
- 18:34Speaker 1: right on the don't look in their windows, and be
- 18:38Speaker 1: standing right next to their door. Back off the stoop
- 18:40Speaker 1: a little bit, stand back, you know, do you remember
- 18:43Speaker 1: the first time we did it together. You're much better
- 18:45Speaker 1: than I am, by the way. But that particular property
- 18:49Speaker 1: we got we asked at first, We asked the hunt
- 18:51Speaker 1: and a lot of acreage there, and he said no,
- 18:55Speaker 1: and we he said kind of no right away, but
- 18:57Speaker 1: very nice, and he talked for a half hour. And
- 19:00Speaker 1: before we left and we were walking away, I went
- 19:01Speaker 1: knocked on door again. I think that was me being aggressive.
- 19:04Speaker 1: You went back to the same door after well, just
- 19:06Speaker 1: after we closed, I knocked. I think it was closing
- 19:08Speaker 1: and we just said hey, I said, you know, do
- 19:10Speaker 1: you mind if we follow up with you in the spring.
- 19:11Speaker 1: Maybe they just look for antlers we go, we have
- 19:13Speaker 1: a good time doing that, because yeah, that'd be great
- 19:15Speaker 1: you guys. He said, it was really cool because you
- 19:17Speaker 1: guys presented yourself really nice. I don't have a problem
- 19:20Speaker 1: doing that, So that was kind of I think the
- 19:22Speaker 1: presentation was key. We were non threatening, so but Ross,
- 19:26Speaker 1: sorry Mark, no, go ahead, but Ross, don't you bring
- 19:28Speaker 1: candle up there once in a while? Your wife, I
- 19:30Speaker 1: think that's like no, she guys waits back a good
- 19:35Speaker 1: technique too. I have heard some people that do that.
- 19:37Speaker 1: I've got a friend who his wife hunts with him
- 19:39Speaker 1: and they go tag team and he believes that having
- 19:43Speaker 1: his wife there with him helps him significantly. UM, I'm
- 19:47Speaker 1: not sure you know exactly how to explain that, except
- 19:50Speaker 1: for shows that maybe your family man you're you know,
- 19:53Speaker 1: not too terribly creepy because you've got a wife. Um says,
- 19:58Speaker 1: there's something that you can it kind of softens it.
- 20:01Speaker 1: I would imagine. Yeah. I think the biggest thing is
- 20:04Speaker 1: just don't don't expect to have a bunch of success,
- 20:09Speaker 1: like right right away. You know, every time you go
- 20:12Speaker 1: out and you talk to people, you're learning about an area,
- 20:14Speaker 1: You're learning about people, and it builds on itself and
- 20:17Speaker 1: eventually it leads to two doors opening up. Yeah, tell
- 20:22Speaker 1: me how often are you like going and doing this stuff?
- 20:25Speaker 1: I hate doing it. I don't do it that much, Mark,
- 20:27Speaker 1: I feel like you do it more and most I
- 20:29Speaker 1: did back in the day just because I was really
- 20:32Speaker 1: I was really motivated. Then Now I'm I'm a little
- 20:34Speaker 1: bit more content. I still ask I think you can
- 20:37Speaker 1: talk about now where he's he did the hard work.
- 20:40Speaker 1: Now he's just like he's massaging them. He's kind of
- 20:44Speaker 1: continually did special missile. Yeah is it? Is it? Fried Festival?
- 20:51Speaker 1: Do you do that kind of stuff? Fire Festival? Watch
- 20:55Speaker 1: that documentary? Yeah, Ross, go get me some water? Move
- 21:00Speaker 1: on or the other show? What's that one? Anyways? We
- 21:03Speaker 1: digrez Where are we going? Forgot? You were talking about massaging? No, no,
- 21:10Speaker 1: you know you're just like you don't don't get permission.
- 21:13Speaker 1: And then just then stop stop showing up and thankful.
- 21:18Speaker 1: You know, every year, you know, take take the landown
- 21:21Speaker 1: or something, always like taking them walleyes and they love that,
- 21:25Speaker 1: and stop and just say you're you know, even if
- 21:27Speaker 1: you're in the area, just stop and say hello. Everybody
- 21:30Speaker 1: likes to talk, especially it seems like in rural rural
- 21:35Speaker 1: um Iowa, Northwestern I don't think. I think I've only
- 21:39Speaker 1: been to a door twice where it was kind of like,
- 21:43Speaker 1: oh that was not a good idea. But but other
- 21:46Speaker 1: than that, I mean, everybody's so friendly all the time,
- 21:48Speaker 1: and it's just and then and then over the years,
- 21:50Speaker 1: you just you just actually you can make some friends
- 21:54Speaker 1: and and create some relationships that are are even better
- 21:59Speaker 1: than you know, being able to hunt. Right. Yeah, you
- 22:02Speaker 1: you certainly shown that that's the case. You dealt some
- 22:05Speaker 1: great relationships by way of that kind of thing. But
- 22:08Speaker 1: I think I think being down here though too. Like
- 22:10Speaker 1: I when we started, when we were living in Iowa,
- 22:13Speaker 1: when we came down here from Wisconsin, it was a
- 22:15Speaker 1: little easier to get permission back when we were really
- 22:18Speaker 1: trying to trying to find places to go. Now it
- 22:21Speaker 1: just keeps getting harder and harder. Other areas of the
- 22:25Speaker 1: country I think would be I mean ten times harder
- 22:29Speaker 1: than here, but but it is, it is becoming more
- 22:32Speaker 1: challenging for sure. Do you think that's just because more
- 22:35Speaker 1: people are trying to get permission or are you seeing
- 22:37Speaker 1: outfitting happening by you or other things or what leasing?
- 22:41Speaker 1: And then you know, and then everybody else, I mean
- 22:44Speaker 1: permission to other people, and yeah, I mean it's it's yeah,
- 22:49Speaker 1: years ago when we were kind of doing the some
- 22:51Speaker 1: of that filming for you, I mean to discuss that,
- 22:54Speaker 1: Avin Ross text me, look at this sign on our stand.
- 22:57Speaker 1: We had no idea our best property was leased out,
- 23:01Speaker 1: and that's kind of way it went. And then all
- 23:02Speaker 1: the rest kind of all that he had like three
- 23:04Speaker 1: different areas we could hunt individual foreign properties and they
- 23:08Speaker 1: each one of them slowly went away and then it
- 23:10Speaker 1: was gone. That was really like the end of an
- 23:13Speaker 1: era too for you guys, wasn't it. Yeah, we used
- 23:16Speaker 1: to hunt together a lot back and then Ross got married.
- 23:21Speaker 1: Ross got married, But Candall hunts all the time too,
- 23:24Speaker 1: So that's actually great for them. But it still doesn't
- 23:26Speaker 1: bother do not for me so much? No, gosh, sure
- 23:28Speaker 1: it does. Ross would rattle the deer in you. Peter,
- 23:31Speaker 1: there is shoot, I go, No, not big enough son.
- 23:34Speaker 1: My favorite, and I can't remember if we've mentioned this before,
- 23:37Speaker 1: My favorite, one of my favorite clips ever that we
- 23:40Speaker 1: had for the Wired Hunt episodes was it was opening
- 23:43Speaker 1: day in Iowa two thousand, awesome day, beauty, and Peter's
- 23:52Speaker 1: up to bat first, he has the bow. Ross is
- 23:54Speaker 1: sitting above him filming. Ross were even in Iowa. That
- 23:58Speaker 1: No was in Wisconsin. I just came down the video you.
- 24:00Speaker 1: I thought, Hey, he's gonna he's gonna actually let the
- 24:03Speaker 1: aerofly and shehot a big buck. So he's he And
- 24:06Speaker 1: now was it the split that came in first? Yeah,
- 24:09Speaker 1: but there was a smaller eight that had great potential.
- 24:11Speaker 1: Then the split nine or ten described this buck a
- 24:15Speaker 1: little more. No, No, no, that that young buck that
- 24:18Speaker 1: had like super came through. Yeah, he came through the split. Yeah,
- 24:22Speaker 1: but then there's yeah, well he would there was the
- 24:24Speaker 1: Albom was okay, I'm okay with you letting that. Yeah,
- 24:26Speaker 1: that's fine. Apparently not in the film though, Well no, no,
- 24:29Speaker 1: that was just the way Yeah, no, it was can
- 24:31Speaker 1: you paraphrase what he said? Mark? Do you remember so
- 24:34Speaker 1: when the big one came through the bigger the two
- 24:37Speaker 1: came through? Ross says Peter, what are you doing? Shoot? Shoot?
- 24:45Speaker 1: Peter's like, I don't think so. And I laughed very,
- 24:51Speaker 1: very hard every time I watched that you too squabble
- 24:55Speaker 1: up in the tree. He was it was like probably
- 24:57Speaker 1: a four year old hundred fort and I think it
- 25:03Speaker 1: was a great three whatever. Yeah, it was like a webbing.
- 25:06Speaker 1: He was not like a nice fork. It was just
- 25:07Speaker 1: a webbing. And what are you talking about? You now
- 25:11Speaker 1: you're talking about the little one? No, just split on
- 25:13Speaker 1: the G two was just more of a web versus
- 25:15Speaker 1: as big. This is why I hang out with these two. Yeah,
- 25:17Speaker 1: I don't, you're not You're getting them confused. No, I
- 25:20Speaker 1: was right in front of me the whole thing. It
- 25:22Speaker 1: was a It was a big deer, especially for where
- 25:25Speaker 1: they came in later. Yeah, okay, there's a two At first,
- 25:28Speaker 1: that's when you kind of yelled at Oh no, no, no,
- 25:30Speaker 1: I'm okay with those. Yeah, okay, the other one. Yeah,
- 25:33Speaker 1: I went home. I got sick to my stone. Maybe
- 25:34Speaker 1: I did yell at you for them. Maybe you'r you
- 25:37Speaker 1: passed on like a hundred and thirty class buck And
- 25:39Speaker 1: that was a three and a half and had had
- 25:41Speaker 1: a nice split going on G two, but that one
- 25:43Speaker 1: had a lot of potential for the further year. They
- 25:45Speaker 1: kind of went away, and Ross was still disgusted and
- 25:47Speaker 1: even bigger about because we heard a smack Nember that
- 25:50Speaker 1: he was fighting somebody someone. I wonder who's fighting? So
- 25:53Speaker 1: that's what I was thinking, What's who is he fighting?
- 25:54Speaker 1: He comes in like G three is a little small, No, no, no, no,
- 26:01Speaker 1: what did I do? He just he had nubs for
- 26:03Speaker 1: G four's But oh yeah, that's right. It doesn't matter.
- 26:06Speaker 1: It didn't matter. It shouldn't have mattered. Why did you
- 26:08Speaker 1: talk yourself out of that? Uh? Yeards broadside, he was
- 26:18Speaker 1: probably one forty. What what is the what's the truth
- 26:20Speaker 1: of the matter, Peter truth? I just don't want to
- 26:23Speaker 1: shoot so I drove all the way down here's the
- 26:26Speaker 1: real truth to sit in that tree to watch you.
- 26:29Speaker 1: Because Kenda the year before saw these one fifties, one sixties.
- 26:33Speaker 1: I'm like, it's the first day of the season. And
- 26:35Speaker 1: in reality, did I get another opportunity that whole year? Probably?
- 26:39Speaker 1: But wait which one? We were the one that was
- 26:43Speaker 1: what the big on public? Later on the other one came.
- 26:49Speaker 1: But people, we're losing the audience now, So what are
- 26:51Speaker 1: you talking about? That one forty class year? I should
- 26:54Speaker 1: have shot after the other two walked through. Yes, I
- 26:57Speaker 1: went home and I watched the video and I go,
- 26:58Speaker 1: oh my god, he's hute. You know, that was nice.
- 27:02Speaker 1: That was my mistake. I think it was his first,
- 27:04Speaker 1: first first hunt of the year. I'm like, I got
- 27:07Speaker 1: this because Ross had to lay down. We got this
- 27:10Speaker 1: permission on this property. It's three acres right here. I
- 27:14Speaker 1: get to hunt it all myself. And because Ross is
- 27:16Speaker 1: and Ross is in Wisconsin that and I'm thinking to myself,
- 27:21Speaker 1: I got I'm not. I'm gonna wait, what's the difference,
- 27:24Speaker 1: because we actually did see a lot of good deer
- 27:25Speaker 1: that year. Yeah, that's a lot of good video for
- 27:27Speaker 1: you that year. Did Yeah, yeah, um, so we're gonna
- 27:33Speaker 1: say something Ross. No, remember he's probably piste off because
- 27:38Speaker 1: I went were swearing. I didn't think he'd want to
- 27:41Speaker 1: come all away from lacrosse. Okay, so the plan was.
- 27:46Speaker 1: The plan was, I'm coming down, are coming where? It
- 27:50Speaker 1: never told me? He goes and she hunts it by himself. Ross,
- 27:55Speaker 1: you should see all the s. No, no, no, that's
- 27:58Speaker 1: not what it was like. You were finding like you
- 27:59Speaker 1: had like six little ones and you sat down in
- 28:01Speaker 1: a stump and pouted because you didn't have any big ones.
- 28:03Speaker 1: And then you found like five right together like through
- 28:07Speaker 1: and cleaned it all up, and then we had to
- 28:08Speaker 1: go back there and get get the seconds. Unbelievable. I
- 28:14Speaker 1: was mad. I know you were, but I had no
- 28:15Speaker 1: idea you're still mad? Well yeah you should be. Yeah. Anyways,
- 28:21Speaker 1: so anyways, back to Peter Passing Deer. When we had
- 28:24Speaker 1: you on the podcast last time, Uncle Peter, people might
- 28:28Speaker 1: remember that as the the closest thing we ever got
- 28:31Speaker 1: to a Bigfoot episode on where Hunt. Oh that was great.
- 28:35Speaker 1: Oh then I did you did allow me to market
- 28:37Speaker 1: my business and I did get a gentleman that came in.
- 28:40Speaker 1: What did this client say, like I asked him, I said,
- 28:44Speaker 1: did you listen to the whole podcast? Kind of question
- 28:46Speaker 1: mark voice? And uh, because it was good. Yeah, he
- 28:50Speaker 1: didn't really bring it up, so I kind of let
- 28:51Speaker 1: it go as if he didn't know that I did
- 28:54Speaker 1: big big foot and vocalizations. One of those vocalizations sound
- 28:59Speaker 1: like the rates that are and just so everybody knows
- 29:02Speaker 1: in case he no, we got we're in the public
- 29:05Speaker 1: place right now to scare the natives. So okay, maybe
- 29:10Speaker 1: you can reference back to that. Yeah, that's a lot
- 29:13Speaker 1: of editing, but probably not. But we we kind of
- 29:15Speaker 1: talked about your journey as a hunter, how you kind
- 29:19Speaker 1: of got up to this point, um, some of the
- 29:22Speaker 1: different challenges you've had, some of the good things I've
- 29:24Speaker 1: gone on, Um, And we kind of left off hopeful,
- 29:29Speaker 1: like we thought that two th eighteen would be your year. Um,
- 29:32Speaker 1: you had some confidence coming in. Yeah, we had a
- 29:35Speaker 1: lot of good intel. Uh. So before you only further, Yes,
- 29:39Speaker 1: I gotta I gotta just make sure you don't forget
- 29:43Speaker 1: that your two thousand eighteen season did begin very well
- 29:45Speaker 1: with our Michigan Turkey camp. Yes, that was exciting, um,
- 29:50Speaker 1: because that's a story worth telling, you know, Mike, I
- 29:53Speaker 1: don't have a lot of experience killing things, so that
- 29:55Speaker 1: was actually fun to get out there and uh kill something.
- 30:01Speaker 1: So that was that kind of gets the on the table.
- 30:04Speaker 1: So so we're going turkey hunting together. So I was
- 30:08Speaker 1: I got luck and have to go out there with
- 30:09Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon extra the extraordinaire, pretty good at calling in turkey.
- 30:14Speaker 1: So we get out there and we're sitting on this
- 30:16Speaker 1: this little spot it's probably like a fence row that's
- 30:20Speaker 1: has a road coming through it, and we I isolate
- 30:24Speaker 1: the turkey the hundred fift yards away, would you say
- 30:26Speaker 1: maybe something like that? It comes down in we're watching it,
- 30:29Speaker 1: saying come forever, and it's getting within forty yards and
- 30:32Speaker 1: he's hammering away and I'm like, this is gonna happen.
- 30:36Speaker 1: And then I'm like Mark can be you know, I
- 30:40Speaker 1: know Mark, and I'm not really scared of him, but
- 30:42Speaker 1: I was actually scared if I'm during that because he's like, Peter,
- 30:44Speaker 1: don't move from but I'm like, I gonna move and
- 30:48Speaker 1: I've really got to move. I'm going numb. And I'm
- 30:50Speaker 1: like I'm like I'm seeing a different side of Mark here,
- 30:53Speaker 1: like this, like that Cameraman episode, you know, this fall
- 30:57Speaker 1: hunting where the cameraman was scared of you. I guess
- 30:59Speaker 1: it's real. And so I'm like, I gotta move. I'm
- 31:03Speaker 1: like going numb, and I you know, I'm so long
- 31:06Speaker 1: story short. That bird came in. I was did great
- 31:10Speaker 1: and then and then, uh, I'm not an experienced turkey hunter,
- 31:13Speaker 1: so I probably should have just stood up and shot, right.
- 31:16Speaker 1: I think you could have just swung your gun at
- 31:17Speaker 1: that point and shot. Yeah, that was five ten yards
- 31:20Speaker 1: through brush, you know, because he was he was about
- 31:22Speaker 1: to step on us. He came right in. And then
- 31:25Speaker 1: if I remember right like we're waiting for him to
- 31:28Speaker 1: pop out from behind some brush and then he got
- 31:31Speaker 1: right on top of you. I probably would have stood
- 31:33Speaker 1: up in fall, and because my ass was none, because
- 31:35Speaker 1: I just was in so much tenderness saying you're Peter's
- 31:39Speaker 1: in so much tenderness on this turkey, so that that
- 31:42Speaker 1: bird ran walked right up to us, gobbling, and then
- 31:45Speaker 1: wasn't Coco Corey Corey was Chuck sniper. Wasn't he just
- 31:49Speaker 1: up the way? He was probably ds away? Yeah, he
- 31:52Speaker 1: was set up over there, and and then you turkey
- 31:55Speaker 1: finally put put it away once he kind of saw
- 31:58Speaker 1: something was going on. If you could imagine what he
- 32:00Speaker 1: was saying in his head, what do you think he
- 32:01Speaker 1: was saying? He was saying, what's he doing? Was Peter
- 32:03Speaker 1: doing is shooting? He never shoots anything shooting. Um, I
- 32:08Speaker 1: didn't work out. But then yeah, then so then we
- 32:12Speaker 1: will kind of do some fast forwarding here. We kind
- 32:14Speaker 1: of walked around. We had a couple of opportunities but
- 32:17Speaker 1: didn't work out. Kind of we're running gun I guess
- 32:20Speaker 1: the technique. And then we spotted some in a different
- 32:24Speaker 1: field where we could actually shoot the field, but we
- 32:26Speaker 1: couldn't hunt the field, if that makes any sense. We
- 32:28Speaker 1: couldn't walk the property, but we could shoot the fence line.
- 32:31Speaker 1: According to the farmer we had and you were if
- 32:34Speaker 1: I recall, You're like, you're man, I want to eat breakfast.
- 32:37Speaker 1: Mark Kenyan said, I'm like, no, we can probably make
- 32:39Speaker 1: this happen. I don't. Yeah, yeah, he wants the waffle waffle.
- 32:48Speaker 1: That's true. I feed the tripot, That's what I keep saying. Anyways,
- 32:53Speaker 1: so I go, Mark, let's get this a shot. I go,
- 32:55Speaker 1: it looks like they feel kind of looks like the
- 32:56Speaker 1: train bends over there. They might be closer over there.
- 32:58Speaker 1: Than you are here. So we kind of let's just
- 33:01Speaker 1: say we went to fifty yards back from the fence
- 33:03Speaker 1: and cut through the ridge and then we we got tack. Man,
- 33:07Speaker 1: this can happen. So I started going down the hill
- 33:10Speaker 1: and um, I stood up on top of So what
- 33:12Speaker 1: was our plan? Let you kind of give the plan
- 33:14Speaker 1: that we kind of came up with at that point.
- 33:16Speaker 1: It was me and you and and Corey. I don't
- 33:21Speaker 1: remember what Cory did it. I'll tell you. I think
- 33:22Speaker 1: he just stayed up behind me, right he was he
- 33:25Speaker 1: was the wind beneath my wings. He was the wind
- 33:27Speaker 1: beneath your ring. He's courageing. And and I was back
- 33:31Speaker 1: on the hill calling. And you were going to try
- 33:33Speaker 1: to sneak down the hill, kind of crawl down the
- 33:36Speaker 1: hill and then try because of the way the ground,
- 33:39Speaker 1: that the slight hill in the brush, it looked like
- 33:42Speaker 1: you might be able to edge your way up to
- 33:43Speaker 1: the edge of the field. There's a lot of crouchwalking
- 33:46Speaker 1: to begin with. And then and then it happened you
- 33:49Speaker 1: went prone. I went prone. And this is something specifically
- 33:52Speaker 1: I'd like to do. If you recall the picture of
- 33:55Speaker 1: me being prone in that log. Yes, it's very very dramatic,
- 33:59Speaker 1: but I I don't recommend it for everybody. It's not
- 34:03Speaker 1: for everybody, but you should try to go prone once
- 34:06Speaker 1: in a while. So so, so I'm crawling on his belly.
- 34:11Speaker 1: I think it'll start because it was like a tree
- 34:13Speaker 1: down but it had a branch like this, so I
- 34:14Speaker 1: couldn't kind of duck through it. So I just started
- 34:17Speaker 1: crawling and I kept on crawling to the field edge
- 34:19Speaker 1: and all the while, yeah, I mean there was ten yards.
- 34:22Speaker 1: They're going like, I don't think this is gonna happen.
- 34:23Speaker 1: I go, it's got it. So I kept on crawling.
- 34:26Speaker 1: They didn't they didn't hear me. But you guys are
- 34:28Speaker 1: making a cackle up top? Were you at that point?
- 34:31Speaker 1: But that once you were pretty darn close. I think
- 34:34Speaker 1: we started trying to just get them to come start
- 34:36Speaker 1: moving our way a little bit because they're they're pretty
- 34:38Speaker 1: far out there, and we start. Once you finally got
- 34:42Speaker 1: into position, that's when we were really That was that
- 34:46Speaker 1: was intense. And the hen started yelping, and then I
- 34:49Speaker 1: would get here really piste off. I keep yelping really
- 34:51Speaker 1: grassively back at her, and she keep going and I
- 34:53Speaker 1: keep going, and then I just started going crazy. So
- 34:58Speaker 1: at this point I'm prone, just like you shooting a
- 35:00Speaker 1: rifle on the ground, and uh, I think I had
- 35:03Speaker 1: a red dot too, didn't I Anyway, I don't know.
- 35:08Speaker 1: I think it might have been Dusty's gun, but um, yeah,
- 35:12Speaker 1: I just this big turkeys ross hay soon when I say,
- 35:16Speaker 1: it's all fluffed out and yeah, sorry terminology, And it
- 35:20Speaker 1: was common and coming coming, and then all of a
- 35:22Speaker 1: sudden at the last second, and I probably could have
- 35:24Speaker 1: shown where he was, but I wanted a little bit
- 35:26Speaker 1: more because he was coming, why not let him go further?
- 35:29Speaker 1: Um because again, in reality, you guys are about twenty
- 35:33Speaker 1: yards higher than me, and so they were focused higher
- 35:36Speaker 1: than where I was. And then this jake just runs
- 35:39Speaker 1: right in front of him and right at me. So
- 35:41Speaker 1: I just let him eat it. And that was. That
- 35:44Speaker 1: was my first turkey kill. So that was pretty exciting. Yeah. Yeah,
- 35:48Speaker 1: and Coco come running through there and he's like, yeah,
- 35:50Speaker 1: he's just screaming, and uh that was pretty cool. So
- 35:52Speaker 1: it was a good moment. Yeah, it was I I
- 35:55Speaker 1: look forward to doing that again this year. Yeah. That
- 35:56Speaker 1: was that was an absolute blast, and I feel like
- 35:58Speaker 1: it it kind of took the edge off something yeah,
- 36:01Speaker 1: in my, my, in, just in me. So we were
- 36:04Speaker 1: all proud of you. We're very proud. Yeah, genuinely excited,
- 36:08Speaker 1: proud and happy for you. I can still picture you
- 36:10Speaker 1: walking into that, um the trailer, that beautiful trailer, with
- 36:15Speaker 1: that jake on your Yeah, that was cool. I don't
- 36:18Speaker 1: want to talk about the trailer though. Man, you didn't
- 36:22Speaker 1: really enjoy sleeping in there? Huh No, I feel like
- 36:27Speaker 1: I hovered the whole time with my hands at my
- 36:29Speaker 1: side six inches off the bed because I didn't want
- 36:31Speaker 1: to just mice chewing on your ear loves sleeping big
- 36:35Speaker 1: zipped up so tight you could just barely see the
- 36:36Speaker 1: white of his eyes. Yeah, Penicillin's on the list of
- 36:39Speaker 1: my things to bring next year. So Turkey camp went, well,
- 36:44Speaker 1: yeah it was you're feeling, did you? I feel like
- 36:47Speaker 1: you like left that with some new confidence. Is that
- 36:50Speaker 1: fair siting? I would say so. Like I said, I
- 36:52Speaker 1: think last year, I'm not a big killer, but I
- 36:55Speaker 1: do everything about hunting. I grew up with hunting. My
- 36:57Speaker 1: father and brother they killed everything they saw and it
- 37:01Speaker 1: just wasn't who I was. But I have killed deer,
- 37:04Speaker 1: I've killed pheasant turkey now and uh who knows what's next.
- 37:11Speaker 1: So talk to us then about the tills in eighteen
- 37:13Speaker 1: deer season. So so we're going right back to Yeah,
- 37:17Speaker 1: we had some good intel from previous hunts. Last year,
- 37:20Speaker 1: I do a hunt mostly state land now, and UM,
- 37:26Speaker 1: i'd for taken river access on some of these spots
- 37:29Speaker 1: because it for the benefits of you just crossed the
- 37:32Speaker 1: river and you're you're up in your stand and um,
- 37:36Speaker 1: that's it, dear, don't know you're there. And this year
- 37:38Speaker 1: the river was so high. We did some testing during
- 37:42Speaker 1: like a Midsummer's day in September, and it was up
- 37:44Speaker 1: to our chest where normally it's at are just above
- 37:47Speaker 1: your knees or at your thigh, and it was just
- 37:49Speaker 1: too too risky. I thought, coming through there in the
- 37:52Speaker 1: middle of the in the morning, you know, dark, and
- 37:55Speaker 1: most likely you'll make it, but if you fall, that's
- 37:57Speaker 1: just a little dangerous. So decided to just take the
- 38:01Speaker 1: long way in and walk the whole property and sweep
- 38:03Speaker 1: down into this river bottom. And I ran a few
- 38:07Speaker 1: deer a few times, and I really think that just
- 38:09Speaker 1: educated the deer that something was going on out of
- 38:12Speaker 1: the normal. And uh, and I didn't see as many
- 38:15Speaker 1: deer as I had in the past. But I did
- 38:18Speaker 1: see a nice one, you know, a nice would be
- 38:22Speaker 1: eight or nine pointer, and and um, we did get
- 38:26Speaker 1: a quality deer on camera, and that was amazing to
- 38:32Speaker 1: see that on camera. So a quality deer. Uh, if
- 38:37Speaker 1: I said the word Don Higgins, is that give you
- 38:40Speaker 1: an idea really big buck? Yeah? I never really thought
- 38:46Speaker 1: i'd catch one of those on camera around here. So
- 38:49Speaker 1: one photo and that well five photos in that little series,
- 38:53Speaker 1: but we never saw him again, so we're not sure
- 38:54Speaker 1: where he resides when he resides somewhere around that area.
- 38:59Speaker 1: So back to your um than encounter. You had an
- 39:03Speaker 1: encounter with a really big deer. Didn't didn't wasn't Wasn't
- 39:06Speaker 1: there a learning experience of that encounter. Yeah. So basically
- 39:09Speaker 1: we set up on which was seemed like a primary
- 39:11Speaker 1: scrape tree. Uh, we'd like to hunt this area around
- 39:15Speaker 1: the early twenties and all the way to November one.
- 39:19Speaker 1: It seems like it's best at that time unless the
- 39:22Speaker 1: year before I had to just two monsters go through
- 39:25Speaker 1: there and no opportunities. It was in the wrong spot,
- 39:29Speaker 1: and then we moved everything to the right spot. We
- 39:31Speaker 1: thought this year, Uh, the scrape wasn't as active as
- 39:34Speaker 1: it happened in the past, and and um, so we
- 39:40Speaker 1: just didn't get the quality or coming through. But I
- 39:41Speaker 1: learned this year there's still coming from the one spot.
- 39:44Speaker 1: So next year, if I can across that across that
- 39:47Speaker 1: river and maybe do a little bit more mobile set up,
- 39:50Speaker 1: I should be able to get a better chance at
- 39:51Speaker 1: one of these year because they're just doing the same thing.
- 39:54Speaker 1: So I was hoping they'd go to that scrape, but
- 39:56Speaker 1: like they did the year before, all, they didn't do
- 39:58Speaker 1: it this year. Uh, we didn't get a lot of
- 40:01Speaker 1: intel this year. We had a camera up in September
- 40:03Speaker 1: all the way to October and a rackoon knocked it over,
- 40:08Speaker 1: so we we don't know if that bigger deer would
- 40:11Speaker 1: have been there or what type of deer were there
- 40:13Speaker 1: this year compared to other years. So so that was distressing.
- 40:16Speaker 1: So so you had one one good encounter, couldn't get
- 40:20Speaker 1: a shot. Yeah, I was just fifty fifty sixty yards away,
- 40:23Speaker 1: so no shot there. I did move to then, so
- 40:26Speaker 1: I didn't move kind of then from where they were
- 40:28Speaker 1: coming from. And one great morning I got one of
- 40:33Speaker 1: the one of the first doughs must went in the
- 40:34Speaker 1: heat around there, and I saw this dough was awesome.
- 40:36Speaker 1: She was running by herself, just crazy, and she's making
- 40:39Speaker 1: all these crazy zig zag patterns all the way down
- 40:41Speaker 1: this ridge and back up and down. Jumped out to
- 40:43Speaker 1: where I was, and at that time I was watching
- 40:46Speaker 1: a two and a half ye old buck. He started
- 40:48Speaker 1: chasing under the opposite direction. But five minutes later all
- 40:50Speaker 1: these bucks come running on her same trail and the
- 40:53Speaker 1: all zig zag up and down the hill. I did
- 40:55Speaker 1: have a good encounter there with maybe a good, good
- 40:58Speaker 1: four and a half year old deer. I don't know
- 41:00Speaker 1: how big it was really, maybe maybe one forties, pretty thick,
- 41:04Speaker 1: it seemed like not not huge, But um I didn't
- 41:08Speaker 1: obviously I didn't do a lot of trimming in this spot.
- 41:10Speaker 1: Well you can't, but I was up in my window
- 41:14Speaker 1: was more forward where this came into my left, which
- 41:17Speaker 1: if you can imagine all these saplings growing to all
- 41:19Speaker 1: these little times times and trees. He was at ten yards,
- 41:22Speaker 1: just couldn't get a shot. Do you think there's anything
- 41:25Speaker 1: you would do, like anything you do differently coming into
- 41:29Speaker 1: this next year now after these close calls you had,
- 41:33Speaker 1: or the failed access via water. I think that the
- 41:36Speaker 1: water is the main access. Maybe do I get a kayak?
- 41:39Speaker 1: I don't know. Um, it just seems like a lot
- 41:41Speaker 1: of work just to do that, when in reality, if
- 41:44Speaker 1: I can just go down this this bank when I
- 41:46Speaker 1: was doing, uh, that seemed to work fine. It really
- 41:49Speaker 1: depends on the water. But if you had full blown waiters,
- 41:53Speaker 1: could you do? Oh? I did have full blown waters.
- 41:56Speaker 1: It was just kind of do you just ago? I
- 41:59Speaker 1: fell on the water when I was up to my
- 42:01Speaker 1: knees and I ruined my camera and everything, so I
- 42:03Speaker 1: just didn't It was pretty fast, and that water is
- 42:06Speaker 1: faster there. It turns up the underneath and it makes
- 42:09Speaker 1: it kind of a little treacherous. So a lot of rocks, yeah,
- 42:13Speaker 1: a lot of big rocks that you kind of I
- 42:15Speaker 1: just think that it's kind of a faster spot and
- 42:18Speaker 1: you get you follow those waiters. Maybe I'm being a
- 42:20Speaker 1: little wimpy, but I just figured i'd be easier just
- 42:24Speaker 1: to do it this way. So, yeah, I hear you
- 42:28Speaker 1: still feeling good about twenty Yeah, you know, I there
- 42:34Speaker 1: is a dream buck on that property, and I don't
- 42:37Speaker 1: really I really don't worry about it. I just for
- 42:41Speaker 1: me is let's get a nice one down let's find
- 42:43Speaker 1: a nice one. There's plenty of them there. Uh, something's
- 42:48Speaker 1: happened to this property. I'm not gonna go into detail,
- 42:51Speaker 1: but it makes it more makes it a little harder
- 42:54Speaker 1: for people to get to certain spots. So if you're
- 42:56Speaker 1: not willing to put in the walking. Uh. And it
- 42:59Speaker 1: kind of slowed down some of the traffic foot traffic
- 43:01Speaker 1: this year, I noticed. And um, I think that did
- 43:04Speaker 1: a lot a lot of good benefit as well. Yes,
- 43:06Speaker 1: it seems like a little honey hoole if you get
- 43:08Speaker 1: into it so well, then um ross, what about your
- 43:14Speaker 1: off season? Because we we talked to you back in
- 43:16Speaker 1: November after you killed that big old buck. Um. But
- 43:20Speaker 1: you know, I know that you're just like me in
- 43:23Speaker 1: that every year you're kind of overthinking everything, right right right,
- 43:26Speaker 1: I'm guessing that you probably think through everything and analyze
- 43:29Speaker 1: all the little things that went right or wrong last year.
- 43:31Speaker 1: And I think about you want tweak? Do you have
- 43:34Speaker 1: any big tweaks that you're planning for this off season?
- 43:37Speaker 1: You know where shed season is gonna be done in
- 43:39Speaker 1: a handful of weeks and then it's you know, either
- 43:41Speaker 1: food plots or tree stand prep or scouting or all
- 43:44Speaker 1: that what's what's on your to do list for this offseason?
- 43:48Speaker 1: I think I think for next season, I'm gonna try
- 43:52Speaker 1: to move. I'm gonna try to find something. I guess
- 43:58Speaker 1: where I've been focusing. I haven't hit. There hasn't been
- 44:00Speaker 1: anything too big lately, so I think it might depending
- 44:05Speaker 1: on what the cameras show and stuff like that, I
- 44:07Speaker 1: might have to move a little bit and find something.
- 44:10Speaker 1: Maybe I get a little bit more excited about. Um.
- 44:13Speaker 1: The quality of books just kind of down in that
- 44:16Speaker 1: area right now. So thinking about maybe trying some public
- 44:19Speaker 1: land again. Um, moving around and trying to find some books. Um.
- 44:25Speaker 1: Other than that, though, still in shed mode. And then
- 44:29Speaker 1: Turkey Turkey mode. So you might hunt with Pete again.
- 44:33Speaker 1: Yeah we can know it again? Nice? Yeah would you really?
- 44:37Speaker 1: But yeah we did last We did once or twice
- 44:39Speaker 1: last year. Yeah, what's that like? Uh? To me, that's
- 44:44Speaker 1: what hunting is. I guess I enjoy the camaraderie part
- 44:47Speaker 1: of it. Um. We talked about me buying land. There's
- 44:51Speaker 1: some nice properties north me but I'm like, well, i'd
- 44:53Speaker 1: rather be next to Ross or somebody, you know, like
- 44:56Speaker 1: a buddy. Then we can kind of brainstorm together. You're
- 44:59Speaker 1: just five minutes apart, Timan's apart, and it just seems
- 45:02Speaker 1: more ideal. So, honey with Ross is always fun because
- 45:05Speaker 1: it just get the chat a little bit, or or
- 45:07Speaker 1: you just kind of you know, you've got two minds
- 45:09Speaker 1: out there versus just one. So Pete Ross, what would
- 45:13Speaker 1: you say? That's like, Oh no, it's it's a lot
- 45:16Speaker 1: of fun. I I miss it, Peter. Yeah, Ross says,
- 45:20Speaker 1: I walked too fast. That's the only thing. Yeah, Well,
- 45:23Speaker 1: if you get still sweat it up like that, you
- 45:25Speaker 1: gotta change all your clothes by the time you get
- 45:27Speaker 1: to stand. That's a problem. Yeah, you do. You practically run?
- 45:32Speaker 1: Does he really? Oh yeah? Is he loud? Is that
- 45:36Speaker 1: something we gotta work? He falls a lot? Yeah, I
- 45:38Speaker 1: do fall that ankles and knees. And we told the
- 45:41Speaker 1: story about the climbing tree stand yet I think so yeah, yeah,
- 45:45Speaker 1: yeah that was I tied up the bottom with twine
- 45:49Speaker 1: and it fell. Rather than help me, rather than help
- 45:53Speaker 1: me right away, he just took a picture. You're just dangling.
- 45:57Speaker 1: You thought you were just gonna bear hug the tree,
- 45:58Speaker 1: and well I kind of really have had to. I mean,
- 46:00Speaker 1: do you really think you could have? Yeah, I'm a survivalist.
- 46:04Speaker 1: I hate to see me in bear country. Look at
- 46:07Speaker 1: these deer just running here. Yeah, we actually have a
- 46:09Speaker 1: bunch of deer running around in front of the vehicle
- 46:11Speaker 1: right now. Mockiness the irony. I was talking about hunting strategy.
- 46:17Speaker 1: While there's how many here are there? There was four
- 46:19Speaker 1: or five? Um, so you guys are hunting together when
- 46:28Speaker 1: you do that, Ross, do you usually like to have
- 46:32Speaker 1: Peter be the hunter? And well in this situation, you
- 46:34Speaker 1: guys aren't filming though anymore, so what would you just
- 46:37Speaker 1: hunt separately? Then? Right? Yeah, we could hunt separately, but
- 46:41Speaker 1: I didn't I take the cameraly yea yeah, yeah, just
- 46:45Speaker 1: try to get it. It was fun much anything contribute
- 46:48Speaker 1: one more time to you if we ever could or
- 46:50Speaker 1: sell it to thee I'm joking that really big one.
- 46:55Speaker 1: Can you imagine that would be something? Maybe that's something
- 46:59Speaker 1: Ross and I could do as a gold this year.
- 47:00Speaker 1: Maybe we can you know, we kind of know where
- 47:03Speaker 1: it's probably living, but we don't know for sure. Maybe
- 47:06Speaker 1: we can do some scouting this, you know, spring or summer,
- 47:10Speaker 1: put sets and cameras in different spots. It would be
- 47:13Speaker 1: fun to try to track that deer down, you know. Um, Yeah,
- 47:16Speaker 1: it just all depends on where he's at. He's living
- 47:19Speaker 1: somewhere where we can get him. That would be unbelievable
- 47:22Speaker 1: if you guys kill that deer. Picture we got kind
- 47:25Speaker 1: of suggests that he was betted on public that day.
- 47:31Speaker 1: But I have a hard time believing, just with all
- 47:33Speaker 1: the pressure that he stays there past mid October when
- 47:38Speaker 1: we got that picture. So I don't know. I wish
- 47:40Speaker 1: you guys had that camera still, right, or wish it
- 47:42Speaker 1: hadn't get knocked over right now? Yeah, yeah, we raccoon
- 47:45Speaker 1: knocked it over, so we don't know what we could
- 47:47Speaker 1: have saw. Yea, so good. We're traveling a couple of
- 47:50Speaker 1: hours to get to that public, are you. That was
- 47:53Speaker 1: a long drive. That's one of the problems with that.
- 47:56Speaker 1: It's it's like seems like it's in the middle of nowhere. Okay,
- 48:01Speaker 1: So yeah, ross this season, you don't need a whole
- 48:07Speaker 1: lot of You don't need to do a whole lot
- 48:08Speaker 1: of different changes in Sally Peter. You've got some tweaks
- 48:11Speaker 1: you want to make. But this is gonna be a
- 48:13Speaker 1: year we all all all of our our group text buddies,
- 48:16Speaker 1: we're all convinced that when you do kill a buck
- 48:18Speaker 1: with your bow, it's probably gonna be like a one
- 48:21Speaker 1: eighty non typical giant. Um. So I'm quite certain that
- 48:25Speaker 1: that you're gonna have some smashing success here soon. UM.
- 48:32Speaker 1: I want to tackle a couple quick listener questions before
- 48:37Speaker 1: we wrap up this little um BS type episode sorts,
- 48:41Speaker 1: Are you guys cool that all right? This is kind
- 48:45Speaker 1: of just an interesting scenario to consider. Um. Someone wrote
- 48:49Speaker 1: in says something along the lines of, you know, it's
- 48:53Speaker 1: not uncommon for guys to talk about seeing bucks that
- 48:55Speaker 1: have already shed their antlers before the season is over.
- 48:58Speaker 1: So in light of this, I can't up with an
- 49:00Speaker 1: interesting hunting scenario. Let's say you've been running your cameras
- 49:03Speaker 1: all year and you have shoot, I just exit out
- 49:07Speaker 1: of the thing. You've been running cameras all year, and
- 49:10Speaker 1: you've got a sure enough stud on camera, plus once
- 49:14Speaker 1: in a lifetime type buck. And for the sake of
- 49:16Speaker 1: the story, let's say that he's highly identifiable even without
- 49:20Speaker 1: his antlers. So let's say maybe there's a scar in
- 49:22Speaker 1: his face. So you've hunted this deer all year, and
- 49:25Speaker 1: one morning in January, you're walking to your stand and
- 49:28Speaker 1: you stumble upon some sheds and they are obviously from
- 49:32Speaker 1: this buck. You pick him up and you go get
- 49:34Speaker 1: in the tree stand and right after daylight here he comes.
- 49:38Speaker 1: He steps out right in front of you so you
- 49:39Speaker 1: can take him. What do you do? Do you kill
- 49:42Speaker 1: that deer even though he's dropped his antlers but you
- 49:44Speaker 1: have the antlers? Or do you not? I'd probably kill him.
- 49:53Speaker 1: You're choot him ross. I don't know what I think,
- 49:55Speaker 1: so I can just do you imagine the taxi dermist
- 49:57Speaker 1: could Yeah, I guess that's kind of what I'm thinking.
- 50:00Speaker 1: It's the same same deer. You got the antlers. I
- 50:04Speaker 1: don't know, Peter, Gosh, he's not going to shoot him.
- 50:10Speaker 1: Come on, we just talked about this for the last
- 50:12Speaker 1: cowny minutes. Don't shoot anything. I have actually the question.
- 50:18Speaker 1: I have actually thought about that from a standpoint. If
- 50:21Speaker 1: you're watching it eating, you want to come in and
- 50:24Speaker 1: it one drops right there like maybe with one horn,
- 50:27Speaker 1: and you know you have the other one. I thought
- 50:29Speaker 1: you would. I would shoot if that's a buck you
- 50:30Speaker 1: want and you have the handler. I mean it's a
- 50:32Speaker 1: cool story too. Now what if he had one handler
- 50:36Speaker 1: dropped already but not the other. But you've got permission
- 50:40Speaker 1: on this farm. Nobody Let's say nobody else hunts this farm?
- 50:43Speaker 1: Do you You don't have antler in hand, though, you
- 50:45Speaker 1: don't have anil in hand, so you would have to
- 50:47Speaker 1: make you'd be betting that you could find the shed.
- 50:49Speaker 1: I wouldn't shoot him, Let him go. I wouldn't shoot him. No,
- 50:53Speaker 1: what about this one when this is something you know
- 50:56Speaker 1: I had to deal with a couple of years ago.
- 50:58Speaker 1: What if you've got the same that you've been hunting
- 51:00Speaker 1: all this time and he busts off some significant portion
- 51:05Speaker 1: let's say half a main beam shooter, don't shoot? What
- 51:10Speaker 1: does he what does he look like? Let's just call
- 51:14Speaker 1: him a big main frame a pointer. Well, let's say
- 51:18Speaker 1: we'll do like the Holy Field Snare a couple of
- 51:20Speaker 1: years ago, big main frame ab excuse me, the bust
- 51:24Speaker 1: off his main beam? You know, pass the G three
- 51:29Speaker 1: in this private republic private And let's say, are you
- 51:35Speaker 1: if you've chased him for years and you've got close
- 51:37Speaker 1: many years. I think at that point it's more about
- 51:38Speaker 1: getting the deer than maybe the rack. Right, Yeah, maybe
- 51:44Speaker 1: at that point my shoot, especially if he's I'm not
- 51:47Speaker 1: going to really amount too much the next year. So
- 51:50Speaker 1: Steve asked me this question though he posed. He's like, well,
- 51:53Speaker 1: if it's not just about the antlers, if it's about
- 51:55Speaker 1: the story, it's about the experience, the journey you've had
- 51:58Speaker 1: with this deer. Why you shoot him if he lost
- 52:01Speaker 1: his antlers completely or if he busted broth both main beams?
- 52:05Speaker 1: So would you shoot this deer if you both excuse me,
- 52:08Speaker 1: if you've been hunting for four years over and over
- 52:11Speaker 1: all these encounters, but you can tell with the scarlet
- 52:13Speaker 1: is him and he's busted both of his antlers off.
- 52:16Speaker 1: Maybe he's just got some spikes sticking up main beam
- 52:19Speaker 1: sticking up now or something? Would you shoot him? See,
- 52:24Speaker 1: I wouldn't. I would say that I probably wouldn't, but
- 52:26Speaker 1: wait till next year. But it kind of kills me
- 52:28Speaker 1: to say that, because I part of me is like,
- 52:31Speaker 1: why does that matter? Doesn't? But I think the way
- 52:34Speaker 1: I thought about it, if I was gonna kill this
- 52:36Speaker 1: deer that I've seen so many times and had experiences
- 52:38Speaker 1: with so many different different times, I would want to
- 52:41Speaker 1: have that dear be the way I know him. What
- 52:45Speaker 1: I mean, That's where I was going. If he's not
- 52:47Speaker 1: the memory that you have, then you're shooting something. Maybe you're, well,
- 52:52Speaker 1: this is a double edge, but maybe not, as you know,
- 52:55Speaker 1: I was happy with him at that level or at
- 52:57Speaker 1: that Yeah, in some weird there's there's something there that
- 53:02Speaker 1: it's just you know, part of the thing is. And
- 53:04Speaker 1: again it's obviously not all about antlers and rack and
- 53:09Speaker 1: so at least not for me, um, I don't think
- 53:12Speaker 1: for you guys either, But you know that is it's
- 53:15Speaker 1: it's it's a it's a physical representation of that animal
- 53:18Speaker 1: and that experience when you have that rack on the
- 53:20Speaker 1: wall or the mount on the wall or whatever it
- 53:22Speaker 1: might be. And every single time I walk into my
- 53:26Speaker 1: various rooms where I have deer on the wall, I
- 53:29Speaker 1: stopped and I look at them and I think about
- 53:31Speaker 1: those memories and it all comes back. I absolutely love it.
- 53:34Speaker 1: I love just sitting in my main room with all
- 53:36Speaker 1: the mounts and just looking at each one of them,
- 53:38Speaker 1: are taking my son to each one. I love being
- 53:41Speaker 1: able to look back and see that and relive those moments.
- 53:44Speaker 1: And it just wouldn't be the same if you don't
- 53:46Speaker 1: see that same animal that you that you saw originally.
- 53:48Speaker 1: You know, although we did have a deer once ros
- 53:51Speaker 1: remember twin towers m hm. He wasn't broken, but he
- 53:55Speaker 1: just didn't develop nice. On one side was just these
- 53:57Speaker 1: two twin towers the World Trade centers him off. One side.
- 54:00Speaker 1: One was a little taller than the other. The other
- 54:02Speaker 1: side was a beautiful guy. He would have been a
- 54:04Speaker 1: one fifty one sixty class dear, let's just say one
- 54:07Speaker 1: fifty for sure to the other side match. But he
- 54:10Speaker 1: was unique and just beautiful on his own right. And
- 54:11Speaker 1: he his he was just like two huge spikes on
- 54:15Speaker 1: one side, and then the other side was just gorgeous.
- 54:17Speaker 1: So I think it comes down to the eye of
- 54:20Speaker 1: the beholder. Um. So speaking of in the eye of
- 54:25Speaker 1: the beholder, Um, Peter, your one of my elder friends,
- 54:31Speaker 1: and at the high end of your demograph, you are
- 54:34Speaker 1: you could be his. Yeah, I could have been actually
- 54:36Speaker 1: lived down by those guys. I might have tapped Mark
- 54:40Speaker 1: on the head one day at the candy store I
- 54:42Speaker 1: lived in ann Arbor slash to come see the head
- 54:45Speaker 1: of the key be like, oh gosh, definitely one of
- 54:50Speaker 1: the worst things he could be doing. So you're like,
- 54:52Speaker 1: you're suggesting that I did that. I didn't do that,
- 54:55Speaker 1: but at one point I feels like I could have
- 54:56Speaker 1: walked by Mark and said, hey, little boy, you you
- 55:00Speaker 1: want some candy, You're going to run a podcast. Oh
- 55:03Speaker 1: So this guy Um says he's forty two and he
- 55:08Speaker 1: just started hunting this year. He's been intrigued with the
- 55:11Speaker 1: sport for ages and after watching in this case, it
- 55:14Speaker 1: was the Mediator TVO TV show he was talking about
- 55:16Speaker 1: UM Washington show. Listening to the podcast, he thought, you know,
- 55:21Speaker 1: screw it, I'm gonna try it out. So he went
- 55:22Speaker 1: out and got all the stuff he needs to hunt, weapons, gear, etcetera.
- 55:27Speaker 1: He's got a buddy who owns a thousand acres in
- 55:30Speaker 1: Ohio and he's ready to hunt. His big questions. He's
- 55:34Speaker 1: just wondering what are the top three things he needs
- 55:37Speaker 1: to do or focus on to make two thousand nineteen
- 55:40Speaker 1: a successful white tail hunting season. So this is obviously
- 55:45Speaker 1: could be a very generic question. But I want us
- 55:47Speaker 1: to think about for a forty two year old adult
- 55:50Speaker 1: onset hunter. So for a new hunter, but who's who's
- 55:53Speaker 1: an adult at that age at that point coming into this,
- 55:57Speaker 1: what's one thing that we could each recommend for Jim
- 56:03Speaker 1: shoot a dough first thing, explain why, UM, just to
- 56:09Speaker 1: get some experience. So shooting just get some experience shooting
- 56:13Speaker 1: at deer. Obviously practice and everything ahead of time, but
- 56:16Speaker 1: but um, shooting a dough would be a great first step.
- 56:20Speaker 1: Get some venicine, get some practice, don't worry about shooting
- 56:23Speaker 1: a big box or any of that stuff. Just like
- 56:26Speaker 1: you're talking to me, Well maybe I am, And what
- 56:28Speaker 1: id you're listening? I think that I think sometimes listening
- 56:33Speaker 1: to some of this stuff for reading things, it's all
- 56:36Speaker 1: focused about on big box and people can get kind
- 56:39Speaker 1: of um. They they think they that's what they have
- 56:44Speaker 1: to experience, or that's what they have to to h
- 56:47Speaker 1: or that's what's going to make a good hunt or
- 56:49Speaker 1: a memorable hunt, and that's not the case anyway, in
- 56:52Speaker 1: any in any case, So I would just focus on
- 56:55Speaker 1: shooting a dough and and just learning about deer, watching
- 56:58Speaker 1: deer and starting for um, you know, starting simple. Don't
- 57:02Speaker 1: focus on all the yeah, find details because that will
- 57:06Speaker 1: come once once you get some experience. Yeah, I think
- 57:09Speaker 1: that's I think that's really good advice and kind of
- 57:11Speaker 1: what I was thinking too. I do think that there's
- 57:14Speaker 1: there's something about taking those baby steps, like one step
- 57:18Speaker 1: of the ladder at a time. And I kind of
- 57:21Speaker 1: made the same mistake. I wish I had um started
- 57:25Speaker 1: shooting does earlier on because I wanted my first year
- 57:29Speaker 1: to be a buck, and so I passed on many
- 57:31Speaker 1: the year over the years to try to get that
- 57:33Speaker 1: first book. And I think I would have grown a
- 57:35Speaker 1: lot more as a hunter more quickly if I had,
- 57:38Speaker 1: you know, just gotten that monkey off the back. You know,
- 57:41Speaker 1: I just say, shoot a dough or shoot a small buck,
- 57:44Speaker 1: shoot the first book you see. Um, nobody cares how
- 57:48Speaker 1: big the buck is. That everybody's gonna be happy for you.
- 57:50Speaker 1: Nobody the only person that cares about what you shoot
- 57:55Speaker 1: as yourself. Nobody cares if you shoot a big buck
- 57:58Speaker 1: or a little book. It's just it's it's you know,
- 58:01Speaker 1: nobody's gonna remember what you shot. Nobody cares. So do
- 58:05Speaker 1: it for you. Yeah, do it for you. Totally agree, Peter,
- 58:11Speaker 1: you are the closest in age to this gentleman. Uh. Yeah.
- 58:15Speaker 1: I would have to say, I heard a thousand acres
- 58:17Speaker 1: and that can be very overwhelming. I think I had
- 58:20Speaker 1: access to five acres one time, and I tried to
- 58:22Speaker 1: hunt the whole damn thing. I would maybe section it off,
- 58:25Speaker 1: do your scouting and figure out where you can hunt.
- 58:27Speaker 1: Where you can't and then UM go about it that
- 58:32Speaker 1: way that five acres I had to begin with, I
- 58:34Speaker 1: was I was just jumping. I never really got consistent
- 58:36Speaker 1: and everywhere. So those good Peter like that would be
- 58:39Speaker 1: my eyes. I think section section it off a little bit,
- 58:43Speaker 1: figure out the best few spots in that area, and
- 58:45Speaker 1: then you know, go from there. Yeah, and I will
- 58:49Speaker 1: add that we did a podcast last summer. I think
- 58:53Speaker 1: it was all about UM beginners deer hunting or beginner
- 58:58Speaker 1: deer hunting type information. It was called I think it's
- 59:01Speaker 1: episode two sixty maybe UM or one sixty. Gosh, I
- 59:06Speaker 1: should know this, UM only go well, we don't have
- 59:11Speaker 1: service down here and do it. But if you were
- 59:13Speaker 1: to google the wire, wire to Hunt, Beginner's Guide to
- 59:15Speaker 1: Deer Hunting, UM, something along those lines that I think
- 59:19Speaker 1: would be a good resource for you, Jim as well,
- 59:22Speaker 1: because you know, there are a lot of new hunters
- 59:25Speaker 1: that pop into the wire and podcast and sometimes I
- 59:27Speaker 1: maybe don't do a good enough job of of helping
- 59:29Speaker 1: those folks out because we do tend to go really
- 59:31Speaker 1: deep into the weeds and things UM. And it's worth
- 59:35Speaker 1: it's worth remembering that it is important for us all
- 59:38Speaker 1: the you know, try to help out those new hunters too.
- 59:41Speaker 1: And I think that's the one piece of advice what
- 59:43Speaker 1: you got here, which is sixteen Yeah, the size of
- 59:45Speaker 1: that book we saw to sixteen Um, the size of
- 59:49Speaker 1: the book we saw. Oh, I know what you're saying,
- 59:55Speaker 1: that too much information. I already gave too much information.
- 59:58Speaker 1: It's like Nevery's gonna track it down. Whatever. What I
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: was trying to say was that that was our advice
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: to Jim. I think my advice to the rest of
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: our audience is just consider trying to be a mentor
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: for a new hunter like Jim, or a young person
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: who maybe wants to get into it. Um. That's a
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: goal of mine this year to try to do a
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: better job of that, and um, something maybe worth considering
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: for all of us. I know, Yeah, would you consider
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: yourself a mentor? Ross to Peter, because you guys kinda
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: had a relationship like that early on. I'm pretty much,
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: what do we do that first time? How did that go? Well?
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: I showed I showed up in tree Bark Camo. This
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: is about ninety seven. Yeah, very popular back then. Uh,
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: because what are you doing? I don't I'm gonna find
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: a trail and so on a rock because it was
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: a lot of rocks around, and I just pretty much said,
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: all right, see you later. And I saw it. I
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: saw four or five deer. Maybe that's why we had
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: the conversation. We had started this podcast later, you know,
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: because he knew that I hunted, but I'm like, I
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: never had a tree stand. He goes, Okay, We're gonna
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: go to Dick's or wherever we went and cut some
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: tree stands and climber and then it always started from there.
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: So and all the adventures ensued. And here we are
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: sitting in a truck treating catfish watching deer, and I
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: think that is a good place for us to end
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: this quick episode. But it was a good time, guys.
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: Thanks for having me along for the shed hunt. I
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: get a kick out of every time I get to
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: come out here, and whether it be deer hunting or
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: shed hunting or just b s. And it's uh, like
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: you said, Peter, I think that is a very wise
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: subtle words. It is about the camaraderie. It is about
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: the relationships and the people. And sometimes I'm guilty of
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: getting so obsessed with the end goal of trying to
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: kill a deer, I get really really into it obviously, Um,
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: I sometimes lose track of just the same things. And uh,
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: I think that something you've got very right is the
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: fact that you prioritize that. And uh, thanks for being
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: that role model for us, Uncle Peter. You're welcome. I
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: love you. Well. There you go, folks, Thank you Peter,
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: and don't be afraid to say that you're glad, glad
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: you come down. It was it was a good time.
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: Next time you promised double digit sheds, that were aws,
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: I'm gonna be a little bit more skeptical. Number one
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: tip for anybody is don't count your sheds before there. Yeah, exactly.
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: It seems like bad luck. Yes, that's all right, next time, right,
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: that's right, all right, let's shut this down and that
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: will do it for this episode of the Wired Hunt podcast.
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: So I will just ask you, if you haven't yet,
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: feel free to hit him over to iTunes and leave
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: a rating or review of this podcast. If you want
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: to follow along more about what I've got going on
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: in the White tailed world, check out the wired Hunt
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: Instagram account or Facebook page. And other than that, I
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: would just say thank you, thanks for listening, thanks for
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: tuning in. And spending your day here with us. Best
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: of luck in the woods if you're scouting, maybe even
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: starting a turkey hunt. I know that's gonna be kicking
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: off for a lot of people. And until next time,
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: stay wired to Hunk
