- 0:27Music and welcome back to the Boundary
- 0:47Corner Podcast along with my partners Ryan Siegler and
- 0:50Jonathan Talley. I am Curtis Wilson in this
- 0:53episode is brought to you by Doctor Jeremy Counts at the Main
- 0:56Street Pharmacy in Blacksburg, your friendly neighborhood
- 1:00pharmacy, 301 S Main St. Blacksburg, VA.
- 1:05And we are back with also one of the members of the family
- 1:10Matasys 247 Sports joining us. Mattei, how you doing first of
- 1:15all tonight? I'm doing great.
- 1:17This is we got day two of EA 25. I've been been grinding out the
- 1:23dynasty, so doing well, but as always, just such a pleasure to
- 1:28be on here with you guys. I got to be up there with most
- 1:32recurring at this point. So something I'm my most proud
- 1:35title at this point. We we have you on at least twice
- 1:38a season here, at least the last two to three years.
- 1:41So you're definitely up there with with most recurring if
- 1:43you're not at the top of the list, man.
- 1:45So welcome back. Always fun to talk recruiting
- 1:48with you. We have a couple other fun
- 1:50topics we get to chop up with you tonight.
- 1:52So really happy to have you back.
- 1:54Tally. Yes, Sir, in Alabama, man.
- 1:57Say what now? How?
- 1:58Hot Is it in Alabama? Too hot.
- 2:01So hot they messed my Wi-Fi up every day.
- 2:05Every day. And burned through the CAT5 over
- 2:07there. Yeah, Nah, man.
- 2:09We had a baseball tournament this weekend and it was, it was
- 2:13think it was 97 is what it was saying.
- 2:16We played on two turf fields and it was so it was so hot that
- 2:20parents were moving away from the field, stepping back to try
- 2:25to watch the game because you can smell the turf.
- 2:28It's how hot it was, so our boys had to win three games to win it
- 2:31all. They did it on Sunday.
- 2:34I don't know how they was look like they were going to fall
- 2:36out, but they toughed it out and ended up winning, pulling the
- 2:41tournament out. So, good times man, but it's
- 2:43hot. Well.
- 2:45Congrats to your son and his team with a nice victory there.
- 2:48Tally. I know you know, we know the
- 2:50trials and tribulations he went through because I think the last
- 2:53time when Tay was on he was still recovering from his
- 2:55injury. So it's great to hear he is
- 2:57fully back playing. And Brian, you said earlier we
- 3:00had some fun topics after break, including CFB 25, which I'm the
- 3:05only person here that doesn't have a copy Y'all do.
- 3:08So I'll let y'all talk about it. But we do have Matei on because
- 3:11we got to talk some recruiting because this staff has been on
- 3:15absolute fire since we last came with you.
- 3:18Last time we interviewed you was Coach.
- 3:19Last time we saw Y'all, we were interviewing Coach Pratt and
- 3:22after that Coach Pratt lit the barn on fire and got a bunch of
- 3:25crews. So Matei, we're going to talk
- 3:27with you about them, but let's reverse your way back.
- 3:30Let's go way back and let's talk about the portal editions right
- 3:34after the end of spring ball. Colin Sheeley, Curtis Perry,
- 3:39Caleb Spencer As you started getting the wind of each of
- 3:44these players, knowing their backgrounds, knowing their
- 3:47histories, knowing where they fit in the discussions, what is
- 3:52it telling you about this upcoming season in a way the
- 3:55staff feels? Yeah, I think you know what the
- 3:58these three guys in particular, they're kind of your luxury
- 4:01signings in the portal. When you look at what they were
- 4:04able to do with some of their other signings in the transfer
- 4:07portal to be able to plug those holes that they had.
- 4:11You know what these three guys like, you look at Colin Schli
- 4:14and you know, they feel really good about Pop Watson.
- 4:18Even last season, he was the number two quarterback for a
- 4:20large part of the season when Grant Wells was hurt.
- 4:23But you know, Shuley was a guy with one year left.
- 4:26He just came from UCLA. He was at Kent State before
- 4:29then. You know, he's 63225 as opposed
- 4:33to Watson, who's I think 511 and listed at 175.
- 4:37So he's a guy. I mean, they're so confident in
- 4:40Kyron drones that, you know, if you think this team is going to
- 4:43be as good as expected, they're going to need someone in mop of
- 4:47duty late in games to be able to take that load in the running
- 4:51game to be able to, you know, take some of those hits at the
- 4:53end of the game. And I think Shli is kind of like
- 4:56a a gap year before Pop Watson really can take over for this
- 5:00program. Then you look at Curtis Perry
- 5:03and that guy out of Alabama. I mean, just such a great
- 5:07recruit and a guy that, you know, the staff said if we can
- 5:11take him, we'll take him. Like this is a guy that will
- 5:13develop into a big time player. I don't think he has a huge role
- 5:17for next year. He could fight his way to that
- 5:19number 4 #5 defensive tackle. But he's a guy that you're
- 5:24looking long term with him. You feel pretty good about the
- 5:27direction of the defensive tackle room.
- 5:29I mean, we look at it a couple years ago, it's pretty bare.
- 5:32So now you have some guys, you're kind of staggering, you
- 5:36know, the years of what the guys have there.
- 5:40And then Caleb Spencer, I think he was the last AD of the class.
- 5:44He's kind of a do it all guy. And I know that they have some
- 5:47familiarity. He's an LCA guy.
- 5:51He can really play a nickel. I think they're going to try to
- 5:53slot him in at safety. He's the guy that can play star.
- 5:57I mean, there's a lot of virtual building there, but they were
- 5:59looking for someone like that that can play multiple positions
- 6:03in the back end. So, you know, All in all, these
- 6:06are luxury signings. But you know, especially with
- 6:09Perry and Spencer, these are guys that I think will be
- 6:13starters, you know, maybe 20/25/2026.
- 6:17Yeah. And I know when when we had
- 6:19Coach Pryor last month, you know, he was talking about
- 6:21Spencer in particular. And I think everybody had him
- 6:24kind of, you know, thinking about safety, maybe nickel
- 6:27corner or something like that. And he's like, yeah, linebacker.
- 6:29Like right out the gate. I was like, all right, so he's
- 6:32that type of versatile. I guess so.
- 6:36I was going to say, I'll tell you what, if you need, if you
- 6:39play 20, NCAA 25, they like Perry on them.
- 6:47He's on the field a lot. All right.
- 6:50Nope. Yeah, taken note.
- 6:52Taken. Before we flip over to the
- 6:56commits for the 25 class, we did sneak in there and get a 26
- 7:02commit, and that's Peyton. Is it Falzone?
- 7:07Is it Falzone? Yeah, the quarterback Nazareth,
- 7:11PA 65200 looks like a kid, maybe kind of a fast riser at this
- 7:18point as far as, you know, rankings may be concerned.
- 7:22What do we know about this kid? I know it's still kind of early
- 7:24on in the 26 process here. Yeah.
- 7:27I mean, it's always an arms race to get a quarterback in your
- 7:30class. Like you always want to get that
- 7:32guy, whether it's like a Kelden Ryan this year.
- 7:35I think he committed same time maybe last year.
- 7:39But you know, this is a guy that you know, he comes out of Penn
- 7:43State territory. Definitely a lot of connections
- 7:46to the staff. Obviously he was really looking
- 7:49at Penn State and Virginia Tech. I think Penn State took another
- 7:53four-star quarterback a couple days before he decided to
- 7:56commit. I know we were joking before we
- 7:59jumped on here about everyone taking vacation or I was
- 8:02actually on vacation when they took the commitment.
- 8:05But he's a guy that, you know, he loved what he saw from, you
- 8:09know, the offensive presentation from Tyler Bowen.
- 8:12He's a six, five, 200 LB guy. And I think a lot of people are
- 8:15quick to assume that he's a pocket passer, but he's a guy
- 8:20that certainly has a bit of wiggle.
- 8:22I think he listed his 40 at 46. It's probably closer to like a
- 8:27four eight. But he's a guy that, you know,
- 8:30is able to really be in that read option game.
- 8:32He's kind of a shortened motion, but a lot of arm strength.
- 8:36I think recently that other site ranked him a four-star.
- 8:43The Shikes didn't remain nameless.
- 8:46So, you know, there's a lot of potential there.
- 8:48I think there's a lot to like about him.
- 8:50I definitely think he can fill into his frame.
- 8:52But he's definitely a guy that I think, you know, has huge
- 8:55potential. And, you know, I wouldn't say
- 8:58watching his film, he's like a perfect fit for the offense.
- 9:02But I think with growth, he can certainly get there as his body
- 9:06kind of morphs into college shape.
- 9:08Like I think he'll be better in the ground game.
- 9:10He's more of AI wouldn't call him like a, you know, he's
- 9:13certainly not drones in his running ability, but he's a guy
- 9:16that can, you know, move in the pocket again, play that read
- 9:21option game. There's a lot of development to
- 9:23be done. Again, he's a 2026 guy, but
- 9:26really, really high ceiling with him A. 100%.
- 9:29We still got we still got 22 high school seasons before we'll
- 9:32see him join the Hokies in the future if if he gets to signing
- 9:36day there. So it sounds like he's a guy
- 9:38that has a little bit of the skill set that we're looking
- 9:41for, but maybe not quite those like high end athletic
- 9:45attributes that you see out of Pop Watson recovering drones.
- 9:48Absolutely. But definitely the size and the
- 9:50ability to get there. And I think that's, you know,
- 9:53that they really want. He's a guy that when you have
- 9:55that unquestioned ability, especially as a passer like you,
- 10:00you take him and you see what you can do once he's on campus.
- 10:03And I think he's a great add to the class.
- 10:05Yeah, and and Matteo, you mentioned having a little bit of
- 10:07wiggle. I think what his sophomore
- 10:09season like over 400 yards rushing on like 60 attempts.
- 10:12So it might not be the drones level or the pop level
- 10:16athleticism, but it's that enough that if it's in the read
- 10:19option game, that end has to stay home because the second he
- 10:22crashes, he's going to take off for a 15 or 20 yard run.
- 10:26And it's like OK, now let's flip it to 2025 and let's start with
- 10:32this guy because this was the first guy immediately back on
- 10:37June 14th that committed Christian Evans out of
- 10:41Stonebridge high school power up in Northern Virginia here listed
- 10:45at six two and a half 280 lbs rated as a three star 88 tally.
- 10:52You hear that they got him at 247.
- 10:54Hasn't has an 88 so far Got got to got to make that point,
- 10:58because y'all know tally he he he walks it like a hawk, but
- 11:02but. Again.
- 11:04Sean Quinn, the primary recruiter, JC Price secondary,
- 11:07tons of offers. I mean, you see, like in
- 11:09Oklahoma, you see North Carolina, you see a bunch of
- 11:13different places. You know, Penn State had
- 11:15interest in this guy. And most recently for the Under
- 11:20Armour camp. He was the DLMVP up at that
- 11:23camp, up in Baltimore, which is a big camp.
- 11:26How did the commitment go and what do you feel he's bringing
- 11:29to the table today? Yeah, I mean, he's a great
- 11:32interior guy. Like when you think about
- 11:34Virginia Tech recruiting, I know I kind of alluded to it with the
- 11:37defensive tackle group, but like it's not often that you see
- 11:41these big time commitments in the trenches in the interior
- 11:44last year. And now Christian Evans are
- 11:47maybe the exceptions to that. Like really high motor guy can
- 11:50really get up the field, as you mentioned was the MVP of that
- 11:54camp. Oklahoma was squarely in the
- 11:57mix, but he really want to stay close to home.
- 12:00That was huge for him. Ultimately it came down to, you
- 12:04know, Virginia Tech, North Carolina and UVA and you know, I
- 12:10love what he had to say on his commitment that, you know, he
- 12:14wanted to play for the flagship program in state.
- 12:17Just really believed in the vision.
- 12:18I think it was he was heavily leaning towards Virginia Tech
- 12:22and then it was the official visit.
- 12:25He was able to be there with a lot of other guys that are now
- 12:28in this class and just being able to spend time with them,
- 12:31spend, you know, multiple hours with the coaching staff really
- 12:35sold him at the end on the vision.
- 12:37Yeah, it's awesome to hear. And and you know, we talked
- 12:40about the the reiteration of the flagship program.
- 12:43I'm glad that's starting to get hammered home again and folks
- 12:46are trying to take recognition of that.
- 12:47So good to keep that branding out there for the program.
- 12:51Let's flip it over to the next guy here.
- 12:53And this one's kind of close to Curtis and I's heart a little
- 12:56bit because because his dad played, played at our high
- 13:00school, won A state championship for our high school.
- 13:03So I've got got a little bit of tie in there.
- 13:06But AJ Brand, quarterback out of South Carolina, Columbia, we get
- 13:10to to go into Shane Bieber territory and snatch one out.
- 13:15Looks like South Carolina was the other team with the big
- 13:17push. They wanted him probably,
- 13:19probably at safety. We were we were good for him at
- 13:21quarterbacks. So what can you tell us about AJ
- 13:24Brand? Yeah, This is one that once the
- 13:27wheels started to turn, they moved fast.
- 13:30Like they Virginia Tech has been on AJ brand for a long time.
- 13:34But really, you know, we heard, you know, they wanted two
- 13:37quarterbacks this entire time. They had Keldon Ryan for over a
- 13:40year. There was a lot of smoke out of
- 13:42the Malik Washington camp. But then eventually, I think
- 13:47when Tyler Bowen's looking at it, he looks at AJ Bran.
- 13:51He has a bit of a Corky throwing motion, but he's just a perfect
- 13:56fit for what they want at quarterback in the system.
- 14:00And I think as time went on, as they got to know him better, as
- 14:03they got to see him a bit more, they realized this is the guy we
- 14:07want to really bring into the program, you know, work on those
- 14:11throwing mechanics once he gets to campus, but someone that they
- 14:14really believe in. And they went all in on him.
- 14:17And like you said, it was a big battle against South Carolina.
- 14:21That's his, you know, home state.
- 14:23That's, you know, there's a, there's a lot of trends in this
- 14:25class, specifically more than any other year with battles
- 14:29against Shane Beamer and South Carolina.
- 14:31And, you know, they really believed in him at quarterback,
- 14:35and I think that was enough to get him in the boat.
- 14:39Yeah. And and I think the one thing I
- 14:41like about him, first of all, I will say this first hand
- 14:44experience, my cousin, one of my cousins played against AJ.
- 14:49They beat him last year and this year their school Irma beat
- 14:53them. But if if you checked out, I
- 14:55mean, he was the state player of the year down there in 4A in
- 14:58South Carolina, which is the second biggest division.
- 15:00So you're not dealing with a bunch of small schools.
- 15:04And you look at his numbers. I mean, he went 3000 as a
- 15:07sophomore, what, three or a junior, 3000 yards, 45
- 15:12touchdowns, 1100 on the ground, seven.
- 15:14I mean, he was that team's offense.
- 15:17And that's crazy to see. I'll say this.
- 15:20I I know y'all have even a recruiting profile on him.
- 15:23I mean, that man needs a bump. That man needs a bump from an 86
- 15:27because you don't do all that as a junior against in that level
- 15:30of competition. So Matei, make the wheels turn.
- 15:34All right, let's I got a question since you brought it
- 15:36up. I didn't want to bring it up,
- 15:37but Curtis used the word bump so I got a question.
- 15:41Bump. So, and this is, you know, this
- 15:45is just for a normal college fan, not a crazy Virginia Tech
- 15:48fan. A person, if a, if a young man
- 15:52commits to a school, is it harder for him to get a bump
- 15:55because he's not really actively being recruited?
- 15:58I know he may be still being recruited by other people, but
- 16:01like not actively going to maybe a lot of camps or, you know, you
- 16:05kind of know where he's at. It's not as much publicity going
- 16:09to be on him in the recruiting ranks unless it's a, you know,
- 16:13flipping them. So is it harder for a player
- 16:15that's committed, you know, earlier to get a bump like that?
- 16:19I think yes and no, definitely with the camps, like you're not
- 16:23going to go to camps once you're committed.
- 16:25You're not visiting other schools hopefully.
- 16:29But at the same time, I think where the biggest bumps come in
- 16:33are those senior films. Once those come in, like I'm
- 16:37trying to think it was who was a Jaden payout who got like a bump
- 16:41from like an 84 to like a 90 and that was like late November of
- 16:46his senior year. So there are stories certainly
- 16:51of guys getting those bigger bumps senior year.
- 16:54It's a bit of luck as well. Like you got to make sure that
- 16:56evaluator has your tape and that you have some pretty excellent
- 16:59tape there. Right at that 88 number was what
- 17:02you said. That senior film came in in
- 17:04December and it was like, whoa, this guy's a four.
- 17:07Like a couple guys went to four-star, a couple guys got
- 17:11the, the Gabe Williams thing was great because they bumped Gabe
- 17:13back up where he originally. Yeah, yeah.
- 17:16Before he committed. So, I mean, we get it.
- 17:20But you know, we always are watching.
- 17:21You know we watching. Y'all I know, I know.
- 17:23You know, but it's not yumate. We know it's not you, but it's.
- 17:25Everyone he it's him too. I always joke around and we have
- 17:28the UVA intern because 11 someone commits to Virginia Tech
- 17:32Normally you see that little, you know, decrease in the
- 17:35rating. But it's funny because I think
- 17:38out of, you know, all the sites, if you go to their individual
- 17:41profiles, you can see their historic rankings like you can
- 17:44see when they got the bump or the drop.
- 17:46So everyone's always checking that.
- 17:48Trust me. I got a lot of DMS about that,
- 17:50yes. Hey, what's going on with these
- 17:51numbers, man? Christian Devin's got the bump,
- 17:55a nice bump after he committed a nice bump and it puts him very
- 17:59close to the 89 four-star. All right, I'm going to flip.
- 18:01Let's talk to another guy. Let's stay or let's take it back
- 18:04to the DMV. We're we're staying in the
- 18:06footprint though, and one of the big ones, the math of Catholics,
- 18:10Noah Chambers, linebacker 622-1686 is the star rating some
- 18:17solid offers. You know, it's one of those we
- 18:19kind of always look at comes to linebackers and safeties.
- 18:22I see Pitt on there if a linebacker has a pit offer and
- 18:25he's probably a good fundamentally sound player and
- 18:28probably can do good things. But you know, the math of
- 18:33there's Elijah again, there's that connection.
- 18:36And even though Marv was his primary, Elijah's right on there
- 18:39with him. How big of a get us to keep that
- 18:41DeMatha train rolling and what what is it looking like?
- 18:45What's the story behind the Noah commitment?
- 18:47Yeah, so I mean, it's huge. I mean, you think about it,
- 18:50Dante Lovett, Emmett Laws, now you got Noah Chambers.
- 18:55This was a guy that, you know, was top of their board in terms
- 18:58of linebacker prospects from the beginning of the cycle,
- 19:02Obviously, like Brett Clatterball was, you know, the
- 19:06the top guy that everyone looks at because of his star rating.
- 19:09And that was one that they definitely wanted to get in
- 19:11early. I think Noah could have probably
- 19:14committed earlier, but he really took his time with this process.
- 19:17And Virginia Tech was the first offer for him.
- 19:20Like they were they were out there in the very beginning.
- 19:23They stuck with him the entire time.
- 19:25They were straight up and honest with him.
- 19:27And you know, I think where you look at Brett Clatterbaugh and
- 19:32like great, great prospect, I think Noah Chambers also has the
- 19:35opportunity to really blow up. Like I think he's just so
- 19:40athletic and he's a guy that can play multiple positions.
- 19:44Like I would not be surprised if you know, he's a guy that sees
- 19:47the field maybe even earlier than Clatterbaugh.
- 19:49So really, really good get and especially with the context of
- 19:55they had two guys at linebacker that they desperately wanted and
- 19:58they were able to land both of them.
- 20:02Pretty good because we need it. I mean, we've had so many times
- 20:05in the past where, you know, you're thinking, man, if we had
- 20:08a, you know, a a linebacker in this position, this game would
- 20:13be a little bit different. So it's good to see them getting
- 20:16some talent in there. Speaking of talent, we're going
- 20:19to go to the the next recruit Green run Kit got to go.
- 20:26You know, shout out to Brody Adams man, for for starting that
- 20:30wave. You know what I mean?
- 20:32Shout out to him and his family yes, for starting that wave.
- 20:36We've had what this is the third kid from green run this 4th from
- 20:40this from this recruiting class. So crazy.
- 20:44But Zeke, I'm not even going to try to pronounce the last name,
- 20:47but 66240 think this kid just transferred there.
- 20:54So his first year at Green run. Let me see 247.
- 20:58Y'all got him at a 85, so that's OK.
- 21:02You know I ain't going to get on you too bad about that.
- 21:04I need to see what he do. I'm going to go with Mattea and
- 21:07we going to watch some film and we're going to see about you
- 21:09know if we need to throw any bumps in that.
- 21:11But kid seems like he has a lot of potential.
- 21:13Like I said, as far as a high ceiling guy.
- 21:16What are you thinking about him, Mattea?
- 21:18Yeah, I mean, he's great. I think, you know, a lot of the
- 21:20guys on the Vt Scoop team have, you know, in our slack, we're
- 21:23always talking about him and just how he might be the biggest
- 21:26hidden gem of this class. Like, he's definitely very raw.
- 21:29A third guy from Green Run obviously didn't play there last
- 21:33year, but he's a guy that's going to come over from Ocean
- 21:36Lakes. They beat out West Virginia for
- 21:38him. I think it's great that he's
- 21:41going to be able to play against Thomas Wilder, who's a 2026
- 21:44recruit on green run. Keep keep an eye out for him.
- 21:48four-star guy pretty much pretty much has offers from everybody.
- 21:52He's 66285 S Zeke is going to go against him and practice every
- 21:58single day. Like these are two solidified D1
- 22:00guys going at it. I think his senior development
- 22:03will be huge and you know, again, he's a guy that you like
- 22:096 foot six, 240 LB defensive ends don't grow on trees.
- 22:13Like this is a guy that's going to absolutely transform his body
- 22:16at the collegiate level and you know, just humongous upside.
- 22:20So I think 85 is fair for him now based on what he's shown.
- 22:24But he's a guy that you, you just like, you got to get him in
- 22:27there and, and see what you know once you coach him up, what he
- 22:31can become. Yeah, he's got the, he's got the
- 22:33physicals, he's got, you know, some of those intangibles.
- 22:36So it's all about what, what does that production look like
- 22:39on the field? And will that warrant a bump and
- 22:41kind of move him up in that class?
- 22:44Let's go to somebody else that's kind of that that that lower
- 22:46side of the class. And in terms of, you know, 2247
- 22:50Sports has them at 86 and Nathaniel Wright, Woodbridge, VA
- 22:58Yeah, big, big guy already. Yeah, 65275 looks like he's
- 23:03going to slide in at that interior offensive line.
- 23:07What have you seen from him? What what's the feelings on on
- 23:10his potential, especially on an old line that needs probably a
- 23:13little bit of depth here? Yeah, absolutely.
- 23:15I know that with the old line, there was a couple guys from
- 23:21this class there. You know, obviously, I think
- 23:23there were a couple top end guys that Virginia Tech missed out on
- 23:27and they would admit that as well, you know, whether, you
- 23:29know, they just wanted to go to bigger programs or found a
- 23:33better place for them. But I think when you look at
- 23:38Nathaniel Wright, he's a guy that was able to go to a camp,
- 23:42earn an offer out of a camp. They really liked what they saw
- 23:45from him and really prioritized him after Carter Stallard.
- 23:50So big guy, interior guy, like yes, he's an 86, but he's also
- 23:55the fourth highest rated offensive lineman out of
- 23:58Virginia. So I think that was another huge
- 24:00thing as well. So just all around, I think, you
- 24:03know, sometimes coaches really trust in their evaluations,
- 24:07especially when they see guys in camp.
- 24:09And I think he was a guy that kind of rose towards the upper
- 24:13half of of their board just because they were able to see
- 24:16him in person and really evaluate him.
- 24:20Definitely, definitely. We're always looking for
- 24:21offensive lineman. Got to get Brian over there to
- 24:24show him some footwork. Brian's got all kind of records,
- 24:27man, so we got to show him how to lift them weights, man, they
- 24:29ain't. They ain't lifting hard enough
- 24:31on things, right Brian? I think Brian froze up.
- 24:38There. But yeah, I guess I don't like
- 24:40this. Yeah.
- 24:45I didn't know if it was me or him.
- 24:47Am I freezing? You getting good now, You good
- 24:51now, you good now. So, yeah, you know, being very
- 24:54early in the class or being in the class in general, I don't
- 24:56like to say favorites, but I am going to say my favorite recruit
- 25:01right now is Jeff Overton. I think Dwight Victoria may have
- 25:08been the first person that told me about Jeff Overton a little
- 25:11while ago, maybe a year and a half ago or something like that.
- 25:16But yeah, I mean, crazy athletic man.
- 25:20If you go watch this film, anybody, if you, if you haven't
- 25:23watched this film, please do. I'm not going to even talk
- 25:27rankings right now because I don't want to put Matteo on the
- 25:29spot. I'm just going to let him talk
- 25:31and then I may come back in and say something.
- 25:33But Matteo, how you feeling about Jeff Overton?
- 25:37First off, I'll say this, I do have a bias with a lot of these
- 25:41recruits. I'm able to really see them, get
- 25:43to know them. And so a lot of them I want to
- 25:47give bumps, right? Like I do have that bias.
- 25:50But like I objectively speaking, Jeff Overton should be a
- 25:54four-star. Like there's no question about
- 25:57it. And he's a guy again, like was a
- 26:01can't lose prospect out of this class no matter what his ranking
- 26:05says. Gatorade football player of the
- 26:07year put up the absolute video game numbers.
- 26:10Like I don't know, they're finding Tyler Mason, who's, you
- 26:13know, has over 110 touchdowns in his career.
- 26:16But like Jeff Overton is doing it at at an even higher level.
- 26:19He had 41 touchdowns last year, 13 yards for Gary.
- 26:23Just like this guy has a bit of everything that you want out of
- 26:27the running back position. Just an absolute total package.
- 26:31And again, just a can't miss prospect.
- 26:34They went all out for him, rolled out the red carpet and
- 26:37they got him and you know, again, top of the board
- 26:40prospect. I'm so excited about his future
- 26:44at Virginia Tech. And when he says rolled out the
- 26:46red carpet, he means rolled out a white Rolls Royce.
- 26:53Somebody in the chat said I don't know who death on the
- 26:56plate is. Thank you for watching though.
- 26:58Think he asked his drones dad on.
- 27:00Yes, Mr. Kevin, drones is usually on with us.
- 27:03That's family. He's usually watching with us.
- 27:05He's usually popping in and out. So yes, Sir, that is Mr. Drones
- 27:11right there. Shout out to Mr. Kevin.
- 27:14Meet us in Nashville. Yes, Sir.
- 27:17Yes, Sir. Meeting y'all in Nashville.
- 27:19Hey, and you mentioned those video game numbers hay fields in
- 27:22six a 6A is it's nothing but the biggest.
- 27:26It's nothing but the biggest throw that on here.
- 27:30I want to get Brian's opinion on that.
- 27:32Brian, your opinion on this before we jump to the next
- 27:34recruit. I think online can benefit from
- 27:38ballet. I mean, I think personally,
- 27:40anybody can benefit from ballet because anything that you can do
- 27:43to improve your balance is going to improve your performance on
- 27:46the field. Yoga, a lot of that stuff like
- 27:49it sounds funny, but a lot a lot of offensive lineman or anybody
- 27:54who has to, you know, can torture body and do different
- 27:57things that they have to do being big guys, you know,
- 28:00Pilates, yoga, a lot of people take part in that even ballet
- 28:04sometimes. I mean, it's not, it's not
- 28:06talking about, you know, when, when you're, when you're
- 28:09blocking, having to maintain your balance while still moving
- 28:14somebody backwards, moving laterally, vertically at the
- 28:18same time. I mean, it's a lot of balance
- 28:20that takes place there. So anything that can improve
- 28:23that, go for it. 100% So there you go from a former offensive
- 28:29lineman himself and from Tally collegiate football players.
- 28:34Well, that that stuff benefits. So I'm going to flip it.
- 28:37Stay on the line. We went to the DMV, we got one,
- 28:41we went to South Carolina. Let's finally rip one out of
- 28:43North Carolina. Let's talk about Sherrod
- 28:45Henderson, the edge out of Rocky Point, NC Hide Trask.
- 28:50I don't know, Robbie, if you're out there listening to give us
- 28:52some background on Hide Trask 63210 and 86 solid offer list
- 28:58for him. You know, you see a team like
- 29:00Michigan State, Duke, especially Duke with Manny Diaz.
- 29:03We know he likes those fast edge rushers, but how did this
- 29:07commitment come together? Because a lot of these names
- 29:10Mateo, I'll be honest, I've seen I've seen Evans, I've seen
- 29:13Overton. Zeke was one.
- 29:15This one pops up as like who's this and where did this come
- 29:18from? Again, it's, you know, they
- 29:20really make this effort in June to get guys on campus for
- 29:24official visits, really to get them around other members in the
- 29:27class and really detail what their outlook would look like at
- 29:31Virginia Tech. I believe he had, you know, a
- 29:33huge military background. So the core was a big thing
- 29:36there and just, you know what that means at Virginia Tech.
- 29:40But you know, even though 63 this is a guy with 610 wingspan,
- 29:44like can absolutely grow into his body like he's a guy that
- 29:49again, like we talked about it with Zeke.
- 29:52They are finding these guys that just like don't grow on trees,
- 29:55you know, like you, you got to find once you find them, you got
- 30:00to trust in your ability to develop them.
- 30:02And I think he's another one that they just once they saw in
- 30:05person, it's it's just like, Yup, we need this guy
- 30:08immediately. Like you're telling me he has
- 30:10one more season to play and then he's going to college.
- 30:12Like, are you kidding me? So another story there, someone
- 30:16that, you know, sat down with pride for about two hours, was
- 30:20not pressured whatsoever to commit and just like loved the
- 30:24honesty of of the approach. And at the end of it was like,
- 30:29what am I waiting on? Like this is a place I want to
- 30:32be and decided to commit. So some of these move a bit
- 30:36faster, some are slow and then you get them on campus for
- 30:39officials. But yeah, this is a guy agreed
- 30:43with Robert there. Like quick, very long guy.
- 30:46Another thing I like seeing too, Brian, we'll put this up here
- 30:52right there. Another coming from a playoff
- 30:55team coming like, hey, Phil was a good team last year.
- 30:58Demath is always a good team. So a team in the state of North
- 31:01Carolina making the playoffs, right, like again, prize.
- 31:06Talk to us about it. Guys who win, guys who know how
- 31:10to do that because that's something you got to learn.
- 31:12Sorry, Brown. I stepped on him, man.
- 31:13You're good, man. Are you good?
- 31:15And and like you said, I'll be winning programs is definitely
- 31:18something that Pry has prioritized since he's been
- 31:21here. It's prioritize the state of
- 31:22Virginia and hid in the footprint, but also prioritize
- 31:25pulling guys from those winning programs.
- 31:27So this just a a continuation of that.
- 31:30And I mean, you know, when we look at the next guy, we want to
- 31:33talk about Matthew out. And that was a big one big, big
- 31:37commitment. You know, athlete at IC Norcom,
- 31:43Portsmouth, VA hit the 757 four-star kid.
- 31:48You got to love that, you know, 6 foot 200 kind of that that
- 31:52ideal size. Tell us a little bit about Mr.
- 31:55Allen here. Yeah, I mean, he's just, he's a
- 31:58phenomenal player. And you know, I want to shout
- 32:01out Evan G Watkins just 'cause he pointed it out, but I know
- 32:05we'll get to the other headliner of this class.
- 32:08But back-to-back cycles with the number one and #2 wide receivers
- 32:13in the boat out of the state of Virginia.
- 32:16This is a guy that very seriously was considering Penn
- 32:20State, loved his official visit there.
- 32:23And I think, you know, honored, honored his commitment to coming
- 32:28to Virginia Tech for his official visit.
- 32:30And I think it really helped out that Virginia Tech had, you
- 32:33know, kind of the last say in things there because they really
- 32:37were able to map out a path for him.
- 32:40And he really believed in the vision there.
- 32:42So yeah, Virginia Tech lands an absolute stud with him.
- 32:48I think he's a guy that can really do it all at the wide
- 32:50receiver position. I know he's listed at athlete,
- 32:53but he's a guy that I think can line up in a lot of places.
- 32:56You can get the ball in his hands in a lot of different
- 32:58ways, and just an extremely versatile and proven player.
- 33:02So yeah, can't miss four-star Guy. 100%.
- 33:07Yeah, I was a little nervous about outing for a while just
- 33:10cause in my opinion, he kind of I know that pry and Pry and crew
- 33:14were on him pretty early, but he kind of went quiet for a little
- 33:17bit and with with Virginia Tech and blew up.
- 33:20So in the past most of the time when that happens you like so
- 33:24long, you know what I mean? But the closer and closer it got
- 33:28to commitment time, we're still in it we're still in it.
- 33:32And then he commits the Virginia Tech.
- 33:34That's what that's what you love to see.
- 33:38Speaking of that, another again, can I just say everybody's my
- 33:43favorite? I said I had a favorite, but can
- 33:45I say everybody's my favorite? This, this is different though.
- 33:49The reason this is different is because Michael Matthews, if
- 33:53everybody don't know, if you don't know him, that you've been
- 33:56under a rock. Again, with my son playing
- 33:59multiple sports, he is a player that I've told my son to take a
- 34:05look at because I'm going to talk a little bit about his
- 34:08baseball skills. He's you know, baseball has them
- 34:13listed a little bit different than football, but we'll go with
- 34:15football 622 O 5. Baseball has them listed at
- 34:2063200. So right around now we may add
- 34:23an inch or something somewhere, but he's very he he has just he
- 34:28has the the physical ability on the baseball field to be the
- 34:33best person on the baseball field.
- 34:35Every time he steps on that Ronald Acuna type outfielder,
- 34:39you know, a little bit of flash to his game.
- 34:41He moves really, really good in the outfield.
- 34:44His his hit speed through the zone.
- 34:47He stays through the zone for a long time using, you know, he's
- 34:52up the middle of the field when he hits.
- 34:54Like, I can go on and on about baseball because that's what we
- 34:56watch, and then you go to go ahead. 54th rated player in the
- 35:01country, right? Now I was going to say, and then
- 35:03you know, they're a little bit different than what you are in
- 35:05football because you live, you're looking at stars.
- 35:07And but when you go to a perfect game and you look at his, his
- 35:10ratings and how he's progressed over the years as a 13 year old,
- 35:14because they keep progression of, you know, your exit V low
- 35:17and how fast you're throwing and pop times and things like that.
- 35:21Like it's it's amazing what he's done in the couple of years that
- 35:25he's he's blown up to where he is now.
- 35:27I switched that over to football.
- 35:29I watched his commitment and listened to some of the things
- 35:31he says and he says, you know, football player that he looks up
- 35:35to as Debo Samuel. That's kind of who he models his
- 35:38game after. And then you go watch the tape
- 35:40and you're like, OK, he don't mind taking the ball out of the
- 35:43backfield. He don't mind getting the short
- 35:45passes, making something happen with the ball.
- 35:47So again, Michael Matthews, we're going to toss it to
- 35:51Mattei. Y'all got what 247 has rated at
- 35:54a 92 right? 92.
- 35:57We going to stay at 92, we going up, but I'm going to pass to
- 36:00Mattei. We're going to take, we're going
- 36:01to pass to Mattei. Let him talk.
- 36:03What are you thinking about, Michael Matthews?
- 36:04Yeah, just from the a football standpoint, like I, I know we
- 36:09talked a little bit about Matt Auten and now Micah Matthews,
- 36:13but like both these guys are listed as the 4th and 5th
- 36:17athletes in the country. Like these are guys that are
- 36:22versatile in multiple positions. You mentioned the Debo
- 36:25comparison. I think that's fair to say.
- 36:28That's kind of what he's been pitched on at Virginia Tech.
- 36:31A guy that can have the ball in multiple situations.
- 36:34Like both of these guys, it's going to be a fun offense in a
- 36:38couple years. But like this is a guy that is
- 36:41just so dominant, you know, the best player on the football
- 36:44team, the best player on the baseball team.
- 36:47Like when we talk about athletes, we're not just like,
- 36:51you know, multiple, like a lot of these guys play multiple
- 36:54sports. But this guy could potentially
- 36:57GoPro in two, right? Like that's what we're
- 37:00projecting with A4 Star here. And he's someone that really
- 37:04loves the vision at Virginia Tech.
- 37:06I think football being so important to him was huge
- 37:09because it really came down. I know Utah was in there as well
- 37:12in the mix, but he was going to play both sports in college.
- 37:16They gave him a detailed schedule, what that would look
- 37:20like at Virginia Tech. And UNC was on him for a long
- 37:25time. And you look at it historically,
- 37:27UNC is the better baseball program.
- 37:30And a lot of people thought that if he were more serious about
- 37:33playing baseball, he has a pretty good option there in
- 37:37Chapel Hill. But it as it turns out, the
- 37:40pitch for the football team for Virginia Tech really stood out
- 37:43to him. And he was very serious about
- 37:46that. And ultimately that's why he
- 37:48chose to be a hokey. And I think, you know, just a, a
- 37:52great player. I think my favorite quote, he
- 37:54did a sidebar with Colby. He said like his favorite route
- 37:59is running a slant 'cause he's not afraid to get hit.
- 38:01He's not afraid of contact. He's a big kid.
- 38:04Like that's someone you love to have in the program.
- 38:06Not someone that's just like so athletic and so skilled, but
- 38:10someone that has the right mentality.
- 38:11And I mean, I could go on and on about him.
- 38:14He's he's the headliner for a reason of this class.
- 38:18Yeah, I'm gonna. Ask.
- 38:19I'm gonna ask. I'll go ahead.
- 38:20Go ahead. I was just going to say he
- 38:22really brings the seems like maturity as well, like seems
- 38:27like a really mature kid and you got to be when you're playing
- 38:29multiple sports on that level, it's hard to avoid, you know,
- 38:32having some of that maturity, some of that leader, those
- 38:35leadership aspects that you're looking for in the program as.
- 38:37Well, well, well, also that maturity too, because tally, you
- 38:40made a point going to perfect game since you're 13 or 14, you
- 38:44you better be on your PS and QS because every scalp is watching
- 38:47you and how you act and what you're doing.
- 38:51So if you ain't on your P's and Q's there, you're going to fall
- 38:53off that saying like ain't going to worry about him.
- 38:55Go ahead, talent. No, I was just going to say, you
- 38:58know, and then watching him, I was trying my best to find like
- 39:02somebody who does what he can do on the current roster.
- 39:06And I don't the only person who I would think would be close is
- 39:09probably Jay Lane, right? Like Chad.
- 39:11And I'm going to tell you is that it like who, who do we use
- 39:15kind of in the area that we would use him right now?
- 39:19Yeah, I mean, I I think you would have to look back and I
- 39:21know it's a completely different offense, but like a Trey Turner
- 39:24type, like you just want to get him the ball however you can.
- 39:27I think that's kind of what he's going to be just in a better
- 39:29scheme and, you know, a bigger version.
- 39:31So just a really great all around athlete.
- 39:34Like he can do it all. Yeah, and and the other thing
- 39:38y'all, if y'all didn't notice, I'm going to tell you, mentioned
- 39:41how high they were on athletes, the athletic ranking 5th and 6th
- 39:45top players in Virginia. So people, a couple months ago,
- 39:49people were getting very, very, very worried.
- 39:51Oh my God, we don't have a top ten player.
- 39:53Clatterbury went down to 11. We don't have it.
- 39:56What are we going to Clemson? And lo and behold, everybody be
- 40:01patient. Everybody be patient with Tay's
- 40:05clearly telling you that this staff knows what they're doing.
- 40:08And. I think you know four weeks ago.
- 40:11I think you know you. I think a lot of people had
- 40:13Matthews penciled in the UNC and out in pencil in Penn State.
- 40:17So. Easily.
- 40:18Easily. No idea.
- 40:22So getting getting those commits is huge from that perception
- 40:25standpoint, getting back in Virginia standpoint, but also
- 40:29kind of calming some of those potential like, oh, is, you
- 40:32know, is 25 going to look be as good as 24 and all this other
- 40:37stuff. And now it looks like, you know,
- 40:38we're rounding out to a yeah, about the same level as that
- 40:41class that we were really, really excited about last year.
- 40:44So and we still got a couple couple other guys in that top
- 40:47ten in play too, so. Yeah, and I just got to say,
- 40:50like, again, I, I know I mentioned back-to-back years
- 40:54with the number one and #2 wide receivers from Virginia, but
- 40:57like, we're talking about Brody Adams, Chans Wiggins.
- 41:01Now we got Auden and Matthews. Like, think about that for a
- 41:06second. Like when has Virginia Tech's
- 41:08wide receiver room looked like that just from like four names
- 41:11alone 17 years ago? That's a long, long time ago.
- 41:15So it it's gonna be a treat for whoever the quarterback's gonna
- 41:20be, whether it's pot or pop or whoever else.
- 41:23Like that is a great wide receiver room to work with.
- 41:27Oh yeah. Right.
- 41:29Definitely. Yeah.
- 41:30And you know, since we talked, you know, 25, let's flip over a
- 41:33little bit and kind of bring 24 back into it as well 'cause we
- 41:37had, you know, we took 16 and 24.
- 41:41It's currently sitting at 15. Total recruits are 25.
- 41:44Do we are we thinking this class is going to be in that 18 to 21
- 41:47range or are we going to kind of stick back into that kind of 16
- 41:50to 18 range with the size of the class and leave more room for
- 41:53potential portographs? Yeah, I certainly think that as
- 41:57of right now, like they feel really good about this class.
- 42:01I think there was a definitive push to get these guys in before
- 42:05all the vacations took place. Like there's a reason all these
- 42:09guys are in the class right now. They were, you know, the must
- 42:11haves. It's going to be the formula for
- 42:15every year. They're going to look at 16 to
- 42:1620 guys. They're going to look for five
- 42:19guys, maybe more that they can take out of the transfer portal.
- 42:22You just never know with attrition these days.
- 42:24But you know, it's about finding these guys to build up the base
- 42:28and then layering it, layering on top of that with transfer
- 42:32portal guys. So, you know, I think they did a
- 42:34great job this year so far. I think my favorite quality
- 42:39about the class, you have 15 guys, 11 of them are from
- 42:42Virginia. So like really sticking to what
- 42:45they said about the blueprint about getting these guys back
- 42:49from the state of Virginia. And you know, these players are
- 42:52sprinkled across Virginia like they're bringing guys in at
- 42:56multiple positions for multiple schools all across the
- 42:59Commonwealth. Like they really lived up to
- 43:01what they were saying. So that's definitely what the
- 43:04blueprint is like. If you replicate this Class A
- 43:07couple times over, a majority of your roster is going to be top
- 43:12in state kids. And then you know, you're going
- 43:14to have your drones, you're going to have your J Lanes, your
- 43:17Feltons, Ollie Jennings, all those kinds of guys.
- 43:20So you'll find transfer portal ads every year, but this is
- 43:25really the base that they're going with.
- 43:27Definitely we got to get some offensive lineman.
- 43:30I mean, I think they're doing all right, but next year
- 43:34offensive lineman, please go get some.
- 43:37Speaking of, you know, offensive lineman and still on recruiting
- 43:42with Matteis. Sis, I need everybody to be
- 43:45quiet and listen because when the man speaks, he usually is
- 43:49doing pretty good. Now two years ago, I wouldn't
- 43:51have said this. I would have said he ain't know
- 43:53what he's talking about. But once he started coming on
- 43:56here and he starts spitting that knowledge, man, it's been coming
- 43:59to fruition. So my question to you is top
- 44:03three uncommitted targets, who are they?
- 44:07Wow, a lot of pressure on this one.
- 44:09Now matching. It up.
- 44:12We'll see. Hopefully, you know, out of
- 44:14these three, maybe two out of three would be successful.
- 44:18You know, the first guy is Messiah Delome, Warwick High
- 44:22School guy Michael Vick. Shout out.
- 44:25He's a guy that you know, he's being recruited by a lot of top
- 44:29teams, including Ohio State. I would say they are the biggest
- 44:33factor in this recruitment other than Virginia Tech.
- 44:37But he's a safety guy. I think he's #4 in Virginia,
- 44:42four-star guy. He's one that again, when you
- 44:47look at the cycle, you say can't miss guy position of need.
- 44:51Like, they want to bring him in. I feel really good about where
- 44:54Virginia Tech stands with him. I know you know, the
- 44:58conversation has been, oh, Ohio State has three safeties.
- 45:04They have two cornerbacks. Like, they're pretty filled up.
- 45:07They would take him. Like if Virginia Tech is able to
- 45:11land him, it's because they were able to beat out Ohio State.
- 45:15So we'll see. I feel pretty good about their
- 45:17chances right now and say it's pretty 5050.
- 45:20He's a guy I don't think will commit until maybe late in
- 45:23August, but someone that definitely is being prioritized
- 45:27right now. Another guy is Kendall Daniels,
- 45:30another safety guy. South Carolina, Virginia Tech
- 45:34battle the story with him. Everyone's saying, you know,
- 45:39he's going to go to South Carolina, he's going to commit
- 45:42to them. Clemson's also in the mix there,
- 45:46but he hasn't committed there yet.
- 45:48And I keep going back to that. Virginia Tech has really worked
- 45:51on him. He's very high on Virginia Tech.
- 45:54He knows what the vision looks like.
- 45:56He's someone that I think could commit at the end of this month,
- 45:59if not early August 6. Three guy, 210, just, you know,
- 46:04could be a really powerful Rover style safety for Virginia Tech.
- 46:10You know, they're really going for the history there.
- 46:12Again, they're fighting against Tori and Gray and Shane Beamer.
- 46:15So it's a it's a big battle there.
- 46:18And you know, again, Clemson's still in the mix, but he hasn't
- 46:21visited there yet. So it's going to be a tough
- 46:24couple weeks for him. I would say South Carolina's
- 46:28probably 7525% favorites right now, but I keep going back to
- 46:32that point that he's still listening to Virginia Tech and
- 46:35you never know until he makes his commitment public.
- 46:38So the last one that I probably feel the best about is Jan
- 46:43Kamaju, Defensive lineman, 63 edge guy, another one of those
- 46:50freaks, super athletic. Now the story with him, he is a
- 46:57like, he's an absolute genius. I think he has like a 4.2 GPA,
- 47:02very serious about engineering, works in Virginia Tech's favor.
- 47:06Like he's a guy that Virginia Tech has been on for a very long
- 47:10time. Again, I think he, you know,
- 47:13Virginia Tech is the favorite right now for him.
- 47:16I don't have a definitive time for when he's going to end his
- 47:21recruitment. I think it could be by late
- 47:24August, but just a a huge guy. No, you said 3 Jordan Krim is
- 47:30another one out of South Carolina, 6 foot one cornerback.
- 47:34Again, a lot of these guys are in the secondary.
- 47:36I think they really want to bolster the numbers there
- 47:40someone that camped and they really loved.
- 47:42He is kind of a scattered offer list, but Virginia Tech is, is,
- 47:47you know, very much on him and he's, you know, kind of a plug
- 47:52and play guy, so to speak that, you know, at he he just does
- 47:56everything that Cheetah wants out of that position.
- 47:59So those would be the four guys I would put at the top of the
- 48:02list and I think, you know, that would put Virginia Tech in that
- 48:061817 to 20 range. OK.
- 48:10All right. So you're still feeling that's?
- 48:13The way you want to be that's. What?
- 48:14Yeah. In in this day and age, that's
- 48:15exactly the way you want to be. I want to throw this.
- 48:18This is not part of it, but it's a good question coming from
- 48:20somebody out here. RSD man 97 and how important it
- 48:26is to having a good year to keep the guys in the boat.
- 48:28Well, I can I'm going to give my opinion on this first y'all,
- 48:31we're ahead of schedule. We weren't supposed to be having
- 48:35the conversations we're having this year about 910 plus wins
- 48:41compete for the ACC backdoor chance at a playoff.
- 48:44We're ahead of schedule. So regardless what happens this
- 48:48year, I don't think it matters. I don't know if y'all's opinion
- 48:52on that, but that's my opinion because we're ahead of where we
- 48:54had three wins a few years ago. Yeah, I will say, you know,
- 48:59winning matters. You know, you got you.
- 49:01You want to see your team go and you want to see your team go and
- 49:04put on a good show. And no matter where they play
- 49:06and who they play, you want to see them win big games.
- 49:09You want to see them win the games that they're supposed to
- 49:11win. But I think, you know, kind of
- 49:13the to go with what Curtis is saying, if you listen to a lot
- 49:17of the interviews with the team, like Virginia Tech hasn't won
- 49:22anything significant in a while. So what you're selling to
- 49:26recruits is we're building, you know what I'm saying?
- 49:29So a lot of recruits say they're building something special
- 49:32there. I want to go there because
- 49:33they're building something special.
- 49:35So yeah, you want to see the wins and winning is important.
- 49:38But I think that for some reason, if things go to hell, I
- 49:43think you still have where if we would have had this player here,
- 49:47if we would have had you here, I think Pride kind of has that
- 49:50down where he can pivot and let recruits know what they're
- 49:55missing to what happened. You know what I'm saying?
- 49:58So that's kind of my opinion as well, Curtis.
- 50:01Yeah. I think it's got it's right,
- 50:02right there in line where as long as you're not taking a
- 50:05demonstrative step back in 2024, I don't think you're really at a
- 50:11big risk of something like that, you know, So I think, you know,
- 50:16I think everyone wants to see the 910, you know, whatever
- 50:18wins. But I think 7 or 8, especially
- 50:22in the if you're talking about regular season wins probably get
- 50:25you back in that same, you know that that that doesn't hurt you
- 50:30with with this class. If you do that another one or
- 50:33two seasons after that, that's when it would start hurting you
- 50:36with future classes because you're not taking that next
- 50:39step. But I think as long as you kind
- 50:41of stay on the current trajectory and don't take a step
- 50:43back, I think you're you're pretty good to go, at least with
- 50:46this class. And I'll say this too, like you
- 50:49think about last year, most of the class, like this cycle was
- 50:53pretty much set in stone before the season rolled around.
- 50:56If you remember, by week four, there was some scary talk on the
- 51:01timeline, like talk that was making its way to recruits, talk
- 51:07that other schools were using as leverage.
- 51:10And in total, there were two D commits last year.
- 51:14One Mensa, was 'cause he always wanted to go to Ohio State.
- 51:20The second one was because Georgia came rolling around for
- 51:23Barnes and that was his dream offer.
- 51:27Eventually he goes to Syracuse to follow for Rand Brown.
- 51:29But like those two things are happening regardless what
- 51:32happens on the football field. Those were the only 2D
- 51:35commitments. Everyone else, like there were
- 51:39some really rough times and they stuck it through.
- 51:41Like these guys when they say they're in and when the staff
- 51:45accepts commitments, it's because they know these guys are
- 51:48going to be in. So yes, you occasionally see a
- 51:51decommitment, but like I would not worry about the on field
- 51:54product as a result. Yeah.
- 51:56It's, you know, those are two commitments where space in
- 52:01another place opened up that wasn't there when they
- 52:04committed. It wasn't that, oh, I'm
- 52:06panicking. So I'm going to take this offer
- 52:09that's still available. 100 percent, 100% All right, one
- 52:13last question. And this is not only for Matei,
- 52:16but all three of us as well. But right now one player in the
- 52:23state of Virginia and I'm going to stick to Virginia.
- 52:24So we ain't got to go through all the offer lists and all this
- 52:27stuff. If if y'all don't have the list
- 52:29of Virginia, it's in our our chat here amongst us.
- 52:32Matei, one player in this state that's already committed that
- 52:37you say whatever reason position, who they're committed
- 52:41to, I want to flip that player to make a statement.
- 52:46OK, if we're sticking with Virginia, I got to go with I got
- 52:51to go with Caleb Williams, like South Carolina commit on the
- 52:55defensive line. He's someone that, you know,
- 52:58even though he's been committed to South Carolina and I still
- 53:01think he's pretty firm in all of that.
- 53:03Like, he's someone that is probably top, top, top guy that
- 53:09before the season you're like Virginia Tech needs to land him
- 53:13just a really dominant force on the defensive line.
- 53:16And I think a huge position of need defensive tackle.
- 53:21Absolutely. That would be one that I think
- 53:23any Virginia Tech fan and all the coaches would welcome a flip
- 53:26for. LeBron.
- 53:29Yeah, but Tay stole my Thunder there.
- 53:31That's OK 'cause he's the guest today.
- 53:32But yeah, it's definitely Caleb Williams and it's not even
- 53:37close. And for many of the reasons that
- 53:39Mattei just said there, it'd be nice to thumb our nose a little
- 53:42bit down at Shane Beamer because of all the trash that they were
- 53:45talking up until recently. So that would feel good getting
- 53:50getting somebody else in Virginia in the footprint,
- 53:53Really good frame, really good abilities already shown it.
- 53:58I mean, it's really a, a, a no lose situation if we could flip
- 54:01somebody like that. Pally, did you get the list up
- 54:04man? Oh, yeah.
- 54:06I mean, it ain't. You don't even have to look at
- 54:08it. I mean, they them two took it.
- 54:10But just because of where he's committed and you know who he is
- 54:13and what he does. But I'll go a little different.
- 54:17I'll say I like the Lord. I, I, I followed him a little
- 54:21bit. I know he committed to
- 54:22Cincinnati. I'd like to.
- 54:25I would still like for him to be a hokey and then another one
- 54:30that's not committed yet, but I think he's been leaning toward
- 54:34South Carolina's Jalen Gilchrist, You know, big
- 54:37offensive lineman, you know, would love to see us, you know,
- 54:40get in that, get in that recruitment.
- 54:43But again, you know, you never know till you know.
- 54:46So that's that's the two I'll throw out.
- 54:50What about you, Curtis? Well, I was going to go Caleb
- 54:52Williams. Exactly what y'all said.
- 54:55Also RVA kid and then these two guys jump all over it over here,
- 54:59Brian and Matei. So I'm going to I'm going to
- 55:01shift gears. I'm going to stay in the RVA
- 55:04because give me a flip on Shamari Earl's if you toe down
- 55:09and take somebody away from Georgia.
- 55:11A first of all, if that happens, it's going to be double digit
- 55:17next to West by the end of the season.
- 55:20They go flip somebody like that because I think that's one of
- 55:23those more of the statements you talk about.
- 55:25We're building a home now. If you come in here and get them
- 55:27early, we will have a season and we will take them back.
- 55:32Give me some. Mario's down Thomas Dale in
- 55:34Chester. So that's who we want.
- 55:37I'd love to see before we get into our commercial break from
- 55:43Main Street pharmacy. If you're out there, take a look
- 55:45at the top 20 players in Virginia, see where they're
- 55:48committed. Who would you want to flip?
- 55:51Who you want chat? Let us know, man, who you want.
- 55:53Robbie, tell us what it is. RSD Thomas, who y'all want to
- 55:57flip and we'll show those up as we go into the second-half.
- 56:00But right now, quick break from our partners at Main Street
- 56:03Pharmacy. I can probably save you a lot of
- 56:06money and I can take a lot better care of you.
- 56:08That's pretty much it. My name is Jeremy Counts and I'm
- 56:11a pharmacist. I own and operate Main Street
- 56:13Pharmacy here in downtown Blacksburg.
- 56:15My brother's a pharmacist, I'm a pharmacist, my uncle's a
- 56:17pharmacist, my dad's a pharmacist.
- 56:19I remember he would give me M and Ms. to count in little pill
- 56:22counters. It's just something I've always
- 56:24done, and I'm just lucky that what I know so well is something
- 56:28that I can do and feel good about it and give back to
- 56:30people. Pharmacies are your frontline
- 56:32defense. Pharmacy's job is to make sure
- 56:35you're getting optimal care. For the lowest price possible.
- 56:37Also, we take the pressure off of emergency rooms.
- 56:40I'll tell people immediately when they need to go to the
- 56:42doctor or I'll tell them if they just need a cream over the
- 56:44counter. If there's something that isn't
- 56:46commercially available, if it's something that's not available
- 56:49in a certain strength or a certain form or anything like
- 56:52that, we'll make it. Tailor made medications.
- 56:54Some of those options save people a lot of money.
- 56:56What motivates me, I get to take care of people and limit
- 56:59Blacksburg. That's all neat.
- 57:04And there is doctor Jeremy Counts in Main Street Pharmacy,
- 57:07our sponsors. I'm going to give him a shout
- 57:09out if y'all have not checked it out yet.
- 57:12Jeremy has started his own little podcast called Blacksburg
- 57:15on the Rocks with former ESPN host Paul Van Wagner.
- 57:19Check that out. I've caught pieces of it.
- 57:22Y'all. Jeremy's so entertaining.
- 57:24He just honest to God is he. He makes me laugh all the time.
- 57:27Also, late happy birthday that was over last week for Jeremy.
- 57:31Had happy birthday to you. All right, boys, Thanks for
- 57:35hanging out with us A little bit more, Matei.
- 57:37Finally, finally, finally. And I'm Brian.
- 57:41Did you? Did you?
- 57:42Were you able to rip him? Yeah.
- 57:43Tally's happy about this. Look at him clapping it up
- 57:45there. Hey, we're getting here.
- 57:47Hang on, we're getting into the screen here.
- 57:49So last Friday? Well, actually, no.
- 57:52Last Thursday. Because of a gamer who has
- 57:56significantly early access to NCAA 25, which probably made all
- 58:02three of y'all jealous. Like why does this guy give me
- 58:04access? The uniforms or the brand new
- 58:09uniforms for the Hokies were released.
- 58:13I got to give shout out to the social media.
- 58:15The social media with Vt football played it all very
- 58:19well, made it tongue in cheek and then the revealed the next
- 58:24day. Brian's trying to pull it up.
- 58:25I know mostly everybody has seen it.
- 58:29I know we have it, but give me y'all's thoughts.
- 58:33I don't care who goes first. Is it what you expected, what
- 58:37you loved, what you wish they didn't do?
- 58:39Tally, you're on mute. Just so you know what y'all
- 58:44think. I'll let Tally go ahead.
- 58:49Also, I'm first. You first.
- 58:52Oh, OK, Well, I'm not going to lose my mind if that's what
- 58:54everybody thinks because we didn't get the right color.
- 58:58But I will say I think that orange is still coming.
- 59:04My my opinion on the uniforms is they did a great job.
- 59:10When Pratt came on, he was very honest about how he felt about
- 59:16uniforms and what they look like.
- 59:19So in my opinion, I knew what they expect.
- 59:21I mean, of course, in then being a Virginia Tech fan, we kind of
- 59:25knew what we're moving toward, what looked good, what we
- 59:28wanted. But the CM executed and put out,
- 59:31like amongst different fan bases, it's been well
- 59:36represented, man. People are really, really happy
- 59:40with Virginia Tech's uniforms. Like I've had a lot of people,
- 59:44you know, are looking at a lot of people say, you know, they
- 59:47think that Nike got this right. And it's mainly because
- 59:51everybody's look so cookie cutter this year.
- 59:53You know, you got so many teams that have the same template.
- 59:57It was good to see something retro and just a clean look.
- 1:00:02So I think they got it right. Man.
- 1:00:04I just need them to give me a alternate orange uniform.
- 1:00:07Can we do that, please? Virginia Tech, I don't care what
- 1:00:10game. I don't care if we don't even
- 1:00:12wear it. Just give us one to let us buy
- 1:00:15it. I think we have that game on the
- 1:00:17schedule, orange effect or something, so maybe we'll see it
- 1:00:20then. But IA 100% agree.
- 1:00:24I think you know, it's funny. I think earlier today I saw the
- 1:00:27UVA and I don't want to, I don't want to poke too many shots at
- 1:00:31them, but. Like take them, take them, they
- 1:00:33deserve it for this one. Every single comment was like,
- 1:00:36did anything change? Like it it, it looks exactly the
- 1:00:40same. And I think when you look at
- 1:00:41Virginia Tech, like, yes, it is a lot different, but it's also
- 1:00:45very simple, like it's a call back to history.
- 1:00:49And then you add in some modern touches.
- 1:00:51It looks clean, like it's everything this program has been
- 1:00:55preaching. And to Tally's point, I think
- 1:00:58what makes the uniforms even better is like it feels like
- 1:01:02this offseason with everything combined, the expectations, like
- 1:01:06the just the positive momentum in all aspects of the team, the
- 1:01:10recruiting now the jerseys, it's like for the first time in a
- 1:01:14long time, you know, I've been covering this team for a long,
- 1:01:17long time. It feels like they are.
- 1:01:21That's a that's a big one right down there.
- 1:01:22It's a big one. Say it.
- 1:01:23I didn't say it. I didn't say it.
- 1:01:25You didn't. Say it, let me.
- 1:01:26Let me say something right quick before you finish tubing tape.
- 1:01:28Go ahead. I don't want to say this because
- 1:01:31Kevin, Kevin hit me up. Am I am I am I am I good?
- 1:01:36Y'all can y'all hear me? OK, so Kevin hit me up on on
- 1:01:41Twitter and he's like they got my son looking like a
- 1:01:44linebacker. Now I don't know if y'all
- 1:01:46noticed like when that when that first came out that that's our
- 1:01:50quarterback in the maroon drug league.
- 1:01:52Like that don't look like a quarterback that is a dude and
- 1:01:59that's a big dude man. Like that was our quarterback in
- 1:02:02the maroon jerseys and I thought that was cool.
- 1:02:05Like just the the reveal that they had was perfect.
- 1:02:10Like the pictures were great. But anyway, Matteo, I'm sorry, I
- 1:02:12didn't mean to cut you off, but when Kevin popped up, I thought
- 1:02:14about that. Yeah, and Dorian and the white.
- 1:02:17But the last thing I was just going to say, just with
- 1:02:20everything combined, the expectations, the recruiting,
- 1:02:23the jerseys, it feels like for the first time in a very long
- 1:02:26time since I've been covering this team, Virginia Tech is
- 1:02:29finally cool again. Like, nationally, they're cool
- 1:02:32again, and that makes the jerseys feel that much better.
- 1:02:36Ron. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:02:38But they just said it. I think the the relevancy of a
- 1:02:41lot of Virginia Tech, we we made a name for ourselves where we
- 1:02:46did on the field. But the late 90 nines and most
- 1:02:51of the 2000s, we were also known for having some damn cool
- 1:02:53jerseys while we were out there doing it.
- 1:02:56And I think we had gotten away from some of that.
- 1:02:59And I think going back to this classic callback, some modern
- 1:03:04touches, something that is uniquely Virginia Tech, I think
- 1:03:10was really important because, yeah, I think if anything we
- 1:03:14wanted, we wanted the shoulder stripes gone.
- 1:03:15But if they had rolled out with that like basic ass Nike
- 1:03:18template jerseys, we would have had a fucking cow.
- 1:03:21Even though it was something new and we probably would have liked
- 1:03:23them more than the shit we were getting rid of.
- 1:03:25We would have pitched a bitch if we got came out there with those
- 1:03:28like generic ass double stripes on the bottom of the of the arm
- 1:03:33jerseys this year. So they got it right.
- 1:03:35They knocked it out of the park. You know, anybody can quibble
- 1:03:39here or there with details here, details there.
- 1:03:41You're going to have people saying something.
- 1:03:42But as far as top to bottom, I mean it.
- 1:03:45It couldn't have got much better for me all.
- 1:03:47Right, There's two things that I love about this Jersey 1 The
- 1:03:52hokey stone on the inside that is unique.
- 1:03:55Nobody else has something like that.
- 1:03:58The white is iced out. It looks beautiful.
- 1:04:00The maroon Harkins me back. I I'll always go back to those
- 1:04:04mid 2000s, all maroon everything.
- 1:04:07But what do we keep saying? We kept saying get the arm patch
- 1:04:11right. That arm patch looks beautiful.
- 1:04:14That arm patch with that orange numbers tally by in Jersey just
- 1:04:17so we can get the orange numbers on that.
- 1:04:19He already got one. I already got it.
- 1:04:21The one that I got signed by Victoria is the white one.
- 1:04:24Is the white one. With the with the orange numbers
- 1:04:26on the orange numbers though. That's what they got right love
- 1:04:29it love it love it all righty so that got revealed because of E
- 1:04:33A/C FB2025 and I won't just sit this one out for a couple
- 1:04:38seconds y'all been playing y'all have added voice I'm.
- 1:04:44Going to tell you the guest and you said you got it, so we got
- 1:04:46to let you go first. What you think?
- 1:04:48Just for a little context, like I could not be more excited
- 1:04:52about this game. Like I've been grinding it the
- 1:04:54last whatever how many hours, 20-30 hours by this point.
- 1:05:00But like I was the type of guy that was like downloading those
- 1:05:04updated rosters like off the dark webs.
- 1:05:07Like I was playing NCAA revamped if anyone knows what that is.
- 1:05:11I was finding any way to play this game before this one came
- 1:05:14out. Now there's a lot that's
- 1:05:18changed. The first game, dynasty mode, I
- 1:05:22loaded up with Yukon trying to build them back, but through 7
- 1:05:27interceptions in the first game on All American 7.
- 1:05:31So it is, it is a huge learning adjustment, but the actual feel
- 1:05:35of the game, like it feels very ecology.
- 1:05:38I like the updated, like just everything, like the pageantry,
- 1:05:43all of that. Like Hokey's coming out.
- 1:05:45I know it's like a slightly altered version of Enter
- 1:05:48Sandman, but like it's so sick. And it's just like, I'm going to
- 1:05:53be like, there's a million options to play this game, like
- 1:05:56with a million different teams, get to know like what makes that
- 1:05:59program special. And I'm like most excited to
- 1:06:02figure that out. And the recruiting has been
- 1:06:04great. So I don't really have any
- 1:06:06negatives other than my gameplay needs serious improvement right
- 1:06:10now. Yeah, I came out of the gate
- 1:06:14pretty quickly with that. I jumped on it right at 4
- 1:06:19yesterday, grinded on it for about 3 hours, only got about a
- 1:06:24little over three hours today. So I haven't been, you know,
- 1:06:28kicking it quite as much today relative to the, you know, time
- 1:06:31I was awake. But I like that it is you know,
- 1:06:34and I think this is the biggest ass most people had and I'm
- 1:06:37going to tell you already touched on a little bit.
- 1:06:38This is not a Madden clone with college jerseys.
- 1:06:43Right. This this feels like a college
- 1:06:45football game and I think that that's the biggest thing that I
- 1:06:49like so far is that element. The recruiting is good.
- 1:06:54I I think it's I think it's a lot deeper than what we got the
- 1:06:56last time out. Obviously you got the portal in
- 1:07:01there. Now you got, you know, nil when
- 1:07:03you're doing the road to glory. So that like the things that you
- 1:07:06want to and the things that you know, you you look for in the
- 1:07:10game or there. Yeah, I think from a game day
- 1:07:15presentation, I might would want to like ratchet that up maybe
- 1:07:18for for next year throw, you know, throw in some of the the
- 1:07:21ESPN stuff or you know, some of the things on some of the other
- 1:07:26networks as well. Whether you get some of that
- 1:07:27production in there. I think that would kind of
- 1:07:29increase the game day experience, opening of the game,
- 1:07:33the halftime stuff. But I think just the feel of the
- 1:07:36game, definitely it it, it, it feels like a college game and
- 1:07:41again, over 12 years in the making.
- 1:07:43So it's nice to have it back. Yeah, definitely.
- 1:07:46So I'm still, I'm like Robbie, I'm still waiting on my copy.
- 1:07:49I got to pick it up Thursday. Thursday night I got a a disc
- 1:07:55copy on my PS5. And I mean, they sold me with a
- 1:07:59locker and all this different stuff that comes with it.
- 1:08:02So I'm like, you know what, if it ever goes away again, can I
- 1:08:05sell it and make some money? So yeah, let me just do this.
- 1:08:08But my son has the Xbox, so he he wanted it.
- 1:08:11So we got it on his Xbox for him.
- 1:08:13And I didn't, I didn't play a lot yesterday.
- 1:08:16I just, you know, opened the game.
- 1:08:17I think it was we were playing Virginia Tech versus North
- 1:08:22Carolina State. And it is different.
- 1:08:25It is very different than you know, like when you put it, you
- 1:08:29better be prepared to know what you're doing because you always
- 1:08:31going to throw picks. You, you know, you're not just
- 1:08:34going to get out there and run for it.
- 1:08:36I mean, if you got it on on on your got your settings right.
- 1:08:39And I guess if you put it on, you know, freshman Ricky,
- 1:08:42whatever, you, you do what you want.
- 1:08:43But if you're playing on all American, like you got to get
- 1:08:46your mind right because they coming for you.
- 1:08:47So the one thing I noticed with playing with Virginia Tech is I
- 1:08:51mean, got a lot of we talk about it all the time because we're
- 1:08:55Virginia Tech fans, but like to see it on the game.
- 1:08:59It's a fun team to play with. Like there's people who are not
- 1:09:02Virginia Tech fans that'll look at that team and go, oh, OK,
- 1:09:06they got a you know, nice stadium and you know, stadium
- 1:09:08noise is good on 3rd downs and you know, home field is great
- 1:09:12and you know, uniforms look good, good traditions there and
- 1:09:16you and you really do have some playmakers on the team.
- 1:09:18So on the offense and defensive side of the ball.
- 1:09:20So it was good to see and, you know, just being in the game was
- 1:09:25was awesome. And it brings you back to
- 1:09:26football. I mean, you took everything away
- 1:09:28from us. I mean, we didn't have college
- 1:09:29football for a while. I mean, you took away what
- 1:09:33what's what's that show that comes on that they stopped
- 1:09:36making a last chance you, you know, usually we'd be watching
- 1:09:39last chance you around this time that's gone.
- 1:09:41So bringing college football back was a great way to get
- 1:09:46people to stay in the house and not go out and kill each other.
- 1:09:49Yeah, I mean, July used to be all about preview magazines and
- 1:09:53NT AA and we and we got them back.
- 1:09:57And now you got now you got Mattei grinding and killing 13.
- 1:10:02Year. Olds, Yeah, killing 10 year olds
- 1:10:04online. 7 picks a game. Yay, they're killing me.
- 1:10:10We got KIRO with gas, man. He came for your neck.
- 1:10:14You know who that is though, man?
- 1:10:15I've seen Kevin poster. I had a post on I think it was
- 1:10:19on Twitter that that I seen Kevin post and his his sons,
- 1:10:23like I got a couple of friends that are doing it.
- 1:10:25You know, I got one, one of my guys that's here, I sold cars
- 1:10:27with his sons at USC. He he went to Georgia State and
- 1:10:32didn't transfer it over to to USC Southern Cal.
- 1:10:35So you know, somebody like Kevin that's playing the game.
- 1:10:39Your son is in this game. 2 two kids, 2 two sons.
- 1:10:44You know what I'm saying? You can't call them kids like
- 1:10:45grown men. Like he's playing with his he's
- 1:10:48it's his kids playing with his sons on the game.
- 1:10:51Like that's awesome to see, man. Another one of my buddies, he
- 1:10:54his sons at Kennesaw State. He's a cornerback.
- 1:10:56I've seen him posting some stuff.
- 1:10:58And then my cousin, he's a he's a high school coach and he just
- 1:11:01had screenshots of all of his kids that he's got kids at, you
- 1:11:05know, high level programs. He got kids at Ole Miss,
- 1:11:10Clemson. Well, Tennessee, he's got kids
- 1:11:13all over right now. So I see him posting like clips
- 1:11:16of them playing with each other and them playing with
- 1:11:19themselves. And that's just awesome, man.
- 1:11:21To be able to get back to that and just distract you from all
- 1:11:24the bullshit that happens in the world that you know that people
- 1:11:26are tired of. Like it's just it, it, it's
- 1:11:30awesome to see, man. Like I'm I'm so glad it's back
- 1:11:33and I'm ready for the real thing to start.
- 1:11:35Damn right. And real quick, just so y'all
- 1:11:38know, Brian's low keying it because Brian doesn't work on
- 1:11:41Friday. So I got a feeling.
- 1:11:43That Brian's going to pull. Yeah, I'm, I'm putting in, I'm
- 1:11:45putting in a lot of hours on Friday.
- 1:11:47I've been. I've been like you.
- 1:11:48Know I got to get up. Together, giving a few hours
- 1:11:50here, a few hours there. Friday's going to be at least
- 1:11:53that whole morning is going to be a marathon probably before we
- 1:11:55can get some other stuff in the afternoon.
- 1:11:58But man, it's, it's, it feels so good to have it back.
- 1:12:01Man, It's it's just. Well, let me ask you all this
- 1:12:03because it came out a few days, I guess a couple weeks ago and
- 1:12:08they were doing the toughest places to play Texas 17 and
- 1:12:12y'all are now playing the game where they're saying like they
- 1:12:15got A&M at 1 Oogas 5 swamps 10. Is it?
- 1:12:22I mean, Mattea, I think you mentioned it about having like
- 1:12:24the the atmosphere of Tech like this is real.
- 1:12:27Does that come across in the game?
- 1:12:29Like if you were playing LSU in Death Valley, like the controls
- 1:12:34are different. Like you try to hike the ball
- 1:12:36like I'm pressing X hike the damn ball.
- 1:12:38Is is that something that's showing through in the gameplay
- 1:12:40about the toughest places? So I haven't, I haven't played
- 1:12:44like the top top teams yet, so I'm sure I'll discover that
- 1:12:48soon. I, I did see I'll probably throw
- 1:12:519 picks, but I did see that list.
- 1:12:56I yeah, I mean, there's a lot of places on there.
- 1:12:59I think, you know, tech definitely feels good.
- 1:13:01I mean, I was playing Aztec, but it feels great in there on 3rd
- 1:13:05downs on defense. And it, it definitely feels that
- 1:13:09way. Like it, I'm excited to go to
- 1:13:11like the shoe and see what that's all about.
- 1:13:14But again, like I was kind of saying earlier, there's like so
- 1:13:18much to explore. Like I don't think I'll get sick
- 1:13:20of this game, which is a good thing.
- 1:13:22So definitely excited for those prime time matchups.
- 1:13:25What about y'all Brian Tally? Just playing like the fields of
- 1:13:28some of those bigger stadiums that are the higher ranked.
- 1:13:31Yeah, I mean, just a personal commentary.
- 1:13:33I feel like 17 is a little too low, but you know, I, I think
- 1:13:37top 12, top ten maybe, but you know, 17, I'm not going to hate
- 1:13:41it. You can definitely feel the
- 1:13:44difference when you're playing in a loud stadium.
- 1:13:48OK. I've played probably I guess a
- 1:13:54dozen games at this point, couple big Rd. games.
- 1:14:01Vanderbilt felt like you really weren't impacted unless there
- 1:14:07was like a tight moment or something like that.
- 1:14:11It wasn't going to get loud at all.
- 1:14:13When it did get loud, it really it didn't really show much of A
- 1:14:16distraction where as you flip over, you know, you play
- 1:14:19somewhere else, you play like a trying to remember the one that
- 1:14:24oh, I played West Virginia, it got it got pretty loud there.
- 1:14:30You could tell the difference, you know, comparing that
- 1:14:32atmosphere against the atmosphere like down at
- 1:14:34Vanderbilt. It was a significant difference
- 1:14:37as far as the that day-to-day impact.
- 1:14:41You know, I'm looking forward to checking out some of the other
- 1:14:43stadiums. I've pretty much only played
- 1:14:47other than like that one off game against West Virginia.
- 1:14:50I've only played one other. I've only played the games on
- 1:14:54our 2024 schedule at this point. So you know, you kind of know
- 1:15:00what that looks like. And there's not a ton of marquee
- 1:15:03matchups, especially ones away from Lane Stadium this year, so.
- 1:15:07About you Tyler. Did you and your son mess around
- 1:15:09and play at some crazy stadiums? No, man, I'm sure he was
- 1:15:12grinding on it all night. Like I said, I only play for
- 1:15:15about 1/2 and it was just, you know, I just wanted to kind of
- 1:15:18see what the Hokies had and what they were doing.
- 1:15:20And one thing I took from so I haven't been able to get into
- 1:15:23the the stadiums and things like that besides playing at, you
- 1:15:26know, playing at lane. And it was it was getting lying
- 1:15:29on 3rd down and I was I was Virginia Tech, so it was helpful
- 1:15:32to me. But I'll tell you what, I wasn't
- 1:15:35doing very good running the ball, but #33 was not going down
- 1:15:41with one hit. I promise you that.
- 1:15:43Like he was getting me. He was getting me three or four
- 1:15:46yards when I was running into people, so tuting is pretty
- 1:15:50tough on them. So it was it was I was like,
- 1:15:52Dang, it's like him for real. So it's pretty awesome all.
- 1:15:56Right, so now we got y'all having the experience and saying
- 1:15:58in the game, if you go to one of the loudest stadiums, it's
- 1:16:01tough. Y'all saw the list.
- 1:16:04First of all, one stadium matte. You've been to some of them.
- 1:16:09We've all been to some of them. We what's like the other?
- 1:16:12Like that place isn't that loud. That place isn't intimidating.
- 1:16:16That place isn't tough. And.
- 1:16:20If you need to pass, you can pass 'cause I I got mine
- 1:16:23already. I don't know if I need a pass,
- 1:16:25maybe it was just because of the outcome of the game, but maybe
- 1:16:28Florida State. It was very loud in the
- 1:16:33beginning and it was a phenomenal time as the game went
- 1:16:36on, very much quieted out. That's because they scored three
- 1:16:40points. One thing I was shocked though,
- 1:16:44that I didn't see on the list, unless I'm completely missing
- 1:16:47it, is Washington. Like, where's Washington?
- 1:16:50Are they on there? I don't think.
- 1:16:54So they are not in the top 25 though.
- 1:16:56So that's your too low. Like, yeah, why don't we get
- 1:16:58getting get insane? Like, I think that is one of the
- 1:17:01most underrated places. Like, I've never been there, but
- 1:17:05sometimes when I'm missing football enough, I will go on
- 1:17:08those videos to like see the fan bases screaming and shouting.
- 1:17:11And Washington is always up there.
- 1:17:13So I was kind of surprised not to see him.
- 1:17:16Honestly, honestly, both of the big Pacific Northwest teams are
- 1:17:20too low because Washington's not on here and Oregon's at 11.
- 1:17:24Yeah. Who's too high then?
- 1:17:33I, I mean, I, I think, I think you go right, right back to FSU.
- 1:17:37I don't think it really gets loud at Bama.
- 1:17:39They just have a pretty high capacity, but they got.
- 1:17:42Oh, no, it's loud. You got a whole bunch of drunk.
- 1:17:45You got a whole bunch of drunk rednecks.
- 1:17:47They loud. There's a whole bunch of them.
- 1:17:51But I don't know. I don't.
- 1:17:52I mean, I've never paid attention enough to like the
- 1:17:55reason I say that. Like Alabama, like being at
- 1:17:58Tuscaloosa compared to being at Auburn is significantly louder.
- 1:18:04Alabama's loud or not. Yeah, Auburn's smaller.
- 1:18:07But like South Carolina, I don't know, like, is South Carolina
- 1:18:10loud? Like they're on the list and I
- 1:18:13don't like I don't hear people talking about and you know the
- 1:18:16game that. But again, I don't pay a lot of
- 1:18:18attention to them, but I just seen them on there.
- 1:18:20I was like, is South Carolina loud?
- 1:18:23For for a stadium that's older, they have a good stadium, but I
- 1:18:25don't know necessarily know if they're like super loud, like
- 1:18:29like that, especially compared to the other SEC teams that are
- 1:18:33kind of on this list, like they're right there.
- 1:18:36You know, with Auburn in this list.
- 1:18:38I mean, Tennessee could be a little bit higher.
- 1:18:43Tennessee could be high. I agree.
- 1:18:44With Oregon's a lot higher, they got a lot of people at Tennessee
- 1:18:47man let. Me, tell you who's too high?
- 1:18:49There's two that's too high. One is Oklahoma.
- 1:18:52I have never heard anybody being scared to go play in Norman at
- 1:18:55Memorial. And this other one is the
- 1:18:58Horseshoe, because if y'all go back to 2014, watching it on my
- 1:19:03television set, we were the loudest people in the stadium
- 1:19:06that night. You heard more hokey fans
- 1:19:08cheering than Ohio State fans that night.
- 1:19:11So I like what you said the other week, Tyler, when me and
- 1:19:14you chatted. It's tough to play because they
- 1:19:16got the best players. That's why it's tough to play at
- 1:19:18those places, right? MY2 low.
- 1:19:21First of all, I don't give a damn.
- 1:19:23A&M does not need to be #1 LSU is number one.
- 1:19:27LSU is. I agree.
- 1:19:28LSU should be #1. I want to tell you something
- 1:19:31else too, man, Like Mississippi State, like they haven't had the
- 1:19:35best program, but as far as being on this list with some of
- 1:19:39these other SEC schools, like you do not want to be anywhere
- 1:19:44near them cowbells when it's going on.
- 1:19:45And I promise you maybe the ears will be ringing.
- 1:19:48It is miserable. Like it's miserable to be there
- 1:19:50if you opposing team, you know what I'm saying?
- 1:19:53Like they it's loud there. Like, and again, just looking at
- 1:19:56the list like I was like, is Michigan State loud?
- 1:19:58You know what I mean? Like I don't watch enough games
- 1:20:00there to know, but I I don't hit like I know Michigan.
- 1:20:04I've heard enough games and seen enough games.
- 1:20:07What what Michigan is doing like videos and things like that, but
- 1:20:09Michigan State I don't know. So it.
- 1:20:12Doesn't it doesn't seem like that the other one, Brian and
- 1:20:14and this is my other two low Oregon should be higher Oregon.
- 1:20:19Washington is it is an atrocity. They're not on here in a team
- 1:20:23like like Boise's on here like Boise's not loud.
- 1:20:28It's a Bluefield like, let's let's be real here.
- 1:20:32Boise is another one that like it's loud for AG5 program
- 1:20:38historically AG5 program right so.
- 1:20:40It's loud for would you rather go to Boise and the Bluefield or
- 1:20:44would you rather go to the Sound and go to Washington?
- 1:20:47And play a game. Yeah, No.
- 1:20:48I'm gonna go to Boise. Exactly.
- 1:20:50Exactly. Oh.
- 1:20:51Man I could literally talk about this for hours but.
- 1:20:53If I mean Arkansas may be a little high I I don't have
- 1:20:56enough frame of reference but like I've never heard.
- 1:20:59Damn, I really don't want to go play Arkansas this week.
- 1:21:02Like that's not some shit that you hear.
- 1:21:04Like they they. They're loud.
- 1:21:07Yeah, but they're not in I, I wouldn't say they're any louder
- 1:21:10than your average SEC school. So they kind.
- 1:21:12Of like, yeah, because the thing that all throws me off is like
- 1:21:17people say, you know, they just not, they just don't win enough
- 1:21:20to be like, like, we've been winning.
- 1:21:22But we always have been loud. Always.
- 1:21:24Like, yeah. That stadium's always rocking,
- 1:21:26you know what I'm saying? At least for a little while.
- 1:21:28Maybe it's a halftime, at least you know what I'm saying.
- 1:21:30But some of these places, I just don't see or don't watch them
- 1:21:34enough or see enough. Like of them being loud like
- 1:21:37there's no videos of them to subject to support what that
- 1:21:41what the list was I guess. Yeah, I mean, there nobody, like
- 1:21:44I said, nobody talks about Arkansas being a tough place to
- 1:21:47go. Like, they just don't, you know,
- 1:21:50they, they might be tough if they're having a good year, but
- 1:21:53like nobody says, you know, upset city.
- 1:21:56I do not want to go to Fayetteville.
- 1:21:58Just because it's at, you know, it's at Fayetteville, yeah.
- 1:22:00They just, they say I don't want to go to Fayetteville.
- 1:22:03They ain't even. It ain't fucking there all.
- 1:22:08Righty well, hopefully when this thing gets done redone next
- 1:22:11year, we are back in the rightful spot in the top ten,
- 1:22:15because that's Brian. My opinion would tally what you
- 1:22:18said. You ever seen a three and 17
- 1:22:20just get sell out after sell out and it's loud and you can't hear
- 1:22:24yourself think that's what happened?
- 1:22:26Hey, Peyton was talking about it when he was talking about the
- 1:22:28hoagies. Like, yeah, they were.
- 1:22:29They were selling out when they didn't have anything to sell.
- 1:22:32Exactly. Exactly all right, last piece
- 1:22:36and and I love it that that that it fell like this because of the
- 1:22:39building or the name of this episode.
- 1:22:42It's called building a legacy, and if y'all didn't see it, go
- 1:22:46back and look back at the end of the last month.
- 1:22:49Bill Conley basically wrote an article of the top most 30
- 1:22:53influential college football teams of all time.
- 1:22:56And I mean, you start looking through this list, you're
- 1:22:59talking about like 93 Florida. Like the years on the Spurrier
- 1:23:04when fun and guns started the Swamp became prevalent.
- 1:23:06You're talking about 19 LSU. You're talking about 86 Miami.
- 1:23:10You're talking about some of the teams like BYU and some of the
- 1:23:14Bama teams. And lo and behold, at #20 is
- 1:23:181999, we did not win a national championship.
- 1:23:21We played. And when I saw that in where we
- 1:23:26sit right now and where we where we were, what we've went through
- 1:23:31and you see that pop up and especially this whole thing, the
- 1:23:35recruiting momentum that Matei talked about all tonight,
- 1:23:39college football, ESP or EACFB coming back in.
- 1:23:43Damn, Texas 17, we're one of the toughest places to play.
- 1:23:47It's, I don't know, it just, it just keeps me.
- 1:23:54I don't know, I feel like I'm going to do something dumb in a
- 1:23:55month here y'all? Don't, don't drink 1/5 of Evan
- 1:24:01Williams. Will not do that.
- 1:24:04I will not do that but. Nobody else did that.
- 1:24:06Somebody else did it, but. But they did that.
- 1:24:08Who the hell did that? But nobody with their brain
- 1:24:11would do that. But we'll tell you, when you saw
- 1:24:14that list come out and you saw that and everything else going
- 1:24:17on, what was the first thing to come through your mind?
- 1:24:19I mean, it's it's great. I mean, I know it's maybe a
- 1:24:22little crazy to put in the context.
- 1:24:24Yeah, they played in a national championship game but didn't
- 1:24:27win. But when you think of like what
- 1:24:29the entire fan base has been dreaming about and like how
- 1:24:33that's kind of transcended what Virginia Tech is to the college
- 1:24:36landscape, like we have our jerseys based off that year, you
- 1:24:41know, like that is our influence are, you know, we're constantly
- 1:24:44talking about what Michael Vick did.
- 1:24:47And I think it's, I think it's true, like in a lot of ways,
- 1:24:51like Virginia Tech, when they are at their best, they are a
- 1:24:55part of the pinnacle of college football.
- 1:24:57Like they are what makes the game, the game so special.
- 1:25:01And so it is extremely influential.
- 1:25:04I think 20 is great. Correct me if I'm wrong.
- 1:25:07That's a top 30 list. The top 30 list a lot of great
- 1:25:10teams not included. On there it's, you know, it's
- 1:25:13tough to pick all those schools, but I think certainly a good
- 1:25:16shout for what has transcended an entire fan base.
- 1:25:20Yeah, definitely, definitely. Yeah, it's, I'll go ahead.
- 1:25:24Brian, I mean to cut you off. No, you're good.
- 1:25:26You're good. I was just going to say, when
- 1:25:28you look at that team and what that meant for the program and
- 1:25:33how that program was already on that upward trajectory and that
- 1:25:37just kind of pushed it over. You're talking about the
- 1:25:39enrollment bumps, you're talking about the recruiting bumps that
- 1:25:42happened, happened on the heel of that.
- 1:25:44And, but they, you touched on it.
- 1:25:47And Sheldon and I actually were on a podcast earlier this week,
- 1:25:52you know, talking about, you know, teams that have a
- 1:25:54puncher's chance to, to, to make some noise this year.
- 1:25:56And, you know, one of the things that they were talking about and
- 1:26:00that I hear all the time, and it's such a compliment, is that
- 1:26:04college football is more fun when Virginia Tech is good, even
- 1:26:07for fans of other teams. And I think that means a lot as
- 1:26:11a Hokies fan because obviously we're, we're in the shit.
- 1:26:13Like we, we, we live it, we breathe it.
- 1:26:16We're here all the time. It's nice knowing that others
- 1:26:21see the value in the things that we appreciate, the things that
- 1:26:25we have always loved about this program.
- 1:26:27So seeing that, getting celebrated a little bit and
- 1:26:30bringing some of that national relevance back has been good and
- 1:26:34it started with that team and that's why that team is
- 1:26:36influential. Yeah, definitely.
- 1:26:40It's like whenever you're making a list, like a most influential
- 1:26:45list, like when you, I think a lot of basketball fans, whenever
- 1:26:49you talk about it, like you always go to a who you buy, It's
- 1:26:52like, oh, I'm a Kobe fan, I'm a LeBron fan, I'm a Jordan fan.
- 1:26:56We're just talking about who's the most influential, right?
- 1:26:59So if you remove this team or you remove that player out of
- 1:27:03the history of the game, does the history of the game change?
- 1:27:07Absolutely. So that's what you look at with
- 1:27:10that team. If you remove that team out of
- 1:27:12the history of college football, does college football change?
- 1:27:16It does, because you had a play on that.
- 1:27:18I mean, you had a lot of great players on that team, but you
- 1:27:21had a play on that. It really transcended what
- 1:27:24quarterback position is, you know what I'm saying?
- 1:27:26Like he did three star starting ranking system, go to Virginia
- 1:27:32Tech hometown school, draft it first, and then he went on to be
- 1:27:37who he is, Michael Vick. You know what I'm saying?
- 1:27:39And then now you see all the like the quarterbacks after him.
- 1:27:43Not saying there was never, you know, a mobile quarterback
- 1:27:45before him. So oh, heads don't come after
- 1:27:47me, but I'm just saying the way that he played the game, a lot
- 1:27:50of people hadn't seen it that way.
- 1:27:52And even before that, you talk about like what Bema was doing.
- 1:27:58Again, I hate to keep on bringing Kevin in it, but we've
- 1:28:01talked to Kevin plenty of times. And when he takes his son on a
- 1:28:04recruiting visit and he looks at the the quarterback wall, I
- 1:28:07mean, it does make a difference. When you see when you are a
- 1:28:10African American quarterback and you look up on the wall at
- 1:28:14Virginia Tech and you see four African American quarterbacks
- 1:28:18that have been there, that's they're greats.
- 1:28:19It's not a lot of schools that have that pedigree.
- 1:28:23Frank was great at doing that. He was going to put the best on
- 1:28:26the field and that's what that team was made of.
- 1:28:28Whoever the best is, it don't matter where you come from.
- 1:28:31It don't matter what your ranking is.
- 1:28:32We're putting you on the field and we're going to go compete
- 1:28:35with the best. That's what that team was.
- 1:28:37That's what Virginia Tech has started to get back to.
- 1:28:40Brent Pry has done a great job to come in and say, you know, we
- 1:28:44got to get back to those roots. And he's like the perfect
- 1:28:48husband, you know what I'm saying?
- 1:28:49Like you keep waiting on him to mess up.
- 1:28:50You're like, I know this motherfucker lying somewhere.
- 1:28:52You know what I'm saying? Like everything that he says is
- 1:28:55like, right, you know, but he, he is who he is.
- 1:28:58Like everything that he said when he came in, like you got to
- 1:29:01go back and go like he stuck to it.
- 1:29:03He stuck to his roots. He stuck to, you know, the, the
- 1:29:08recruiting footprint. He stuck to what he says about
- 1:29:10the uniforms. Like again, I know I'm getting
- 1:29:13off the but talking about that team and then leading it into
- 1:29:16into what we see now, it's nostalgia, you know what I'm
- 1:29:19saying? And like again, me being here in
- 1:29:21Alabama, everybody says the same thing like we'll be in the
- 1:29:25office and everybody college football's coming up, man.
- 1:29:27We can't wait to be who's your team or Virginia Tech?
- 1:29:29I ain't I ain't worried about that.
- 1:29:31Like I'm I'm happy about that. I don't care.
- 1:29:33We want y'all to be good, you know, because most people here
- 1:29:35are SEC fans. They don't care if we good, we
- 1:29:37ain't bothering them, you know what I mean?
- 1:29:38So they want to see us good. And it it like you turn on the
- 1:29:42TV on a Thursday night and you see Virginia Tech, you know
- 1:29:45you're going to see a good game, so.
- 1:29:47Yep, I'm going to. I'm going to end it right at
- 1:29:49that because you, you put a great.
- 1:29:51Cap on the up. Yep, fired up for the season we
