- 0:00What a great, great person. I can't wait to see who the next
- 0:02person is. We got another alum, so buckle
- 0:05up. We're going to get another
- 0:06question right back here at your humble host here.
- 0:10All right, you've been working out, so introduce yourself to
- 0:14the crowd. Here, Greg Schmidt, head coach,
- 0:17cross coach at Track and Field, University of Bridgeport.
- 0:20So brand new program. Mike, you're missing all the
- 0:22fun. This is where the fun is out
- 0:23front. Here all the coaches talk to
- 0:24each other. I feel bad.
- 0:26I told you I was going to be here at like 455, but I saw Gary
- 0:29Aldrich saw Mike Sergeant, and we stopped talking.
- 0:32You know what? Those are two good people.
- 0:34So I'll allow that. I'll allow that.
- 0:36Yeah. It's really hard to be focused
- 0:37right here on our audience and our guests and all these amazing
- 0:40people that I'm just super excited.
- 0:41We said we're going to go five to seven, but I've made a
- 0:43promise to myself. If at 7:00 PM people are still
- 0:45here, I'm still here we go. Roll with it, baby.
- 0:47Keep in mind. Yeah.
- 0:48So tell me, what are you doing here at the convention?
- 0:50What are you looking forward to the most?
- 0:51Here this. Week for me, the thing I enjoy
- 0:54the most still is just like I said, interacting with the
- 0:56coaches and doing things like that.
- 0:57I have committee meetings, you know, starting a brand new
- 1:00program from scratch, just getting the word out there and
- 1:03all. But you know, I I actually enjoy
- 1:05the meetings because that's where we kind of grow our sport.
- 1:08And get more about our sport and.
- 1:10Well, I like the symposiums and things like that.
- 1:13Just interacting with the other coaches.
- 1:15I mean, you learn a lot more. You see how everybody's doing
- 1:17and like, you know, if you're a track coach or you know with the
- 1:20sport, you're fanatical about it, right?
- 1:22So it's good to be You're a track nerd about it, yeah.
- 1:25Yeah, yeah, yeah. So it's good to just.
- 1:28Meet other people who have the same mindset as anything else.
- 1:31So tell us a little bit now and we got into this.
- 1:32So here we have another alum of the Guild Connections podcast.
- 1:35So you just gotta Google his name with Gill Athletics and the
- 1:38podcast will pop up or the YouTube and we got into this.
- 1:41But I want just kind of a 30 second version of starting a new
- 1:44program from scratch, cuz that just like I feel like that's
- 1:46what I would have really enjoyed in the coaching.
- 1:49You say that and then you do it. No, it's it's it is exciting and
- 1:54I I feel privileged and I'm the first, you know, I'm the only
- 1:57first ever coach in the universities ever going to have.
- 1:58That's right. So it's it's exciting thing to
- 2:00do. It's a lot of recruiting and
- 2:02just getting the word out there. You know, I think you saw, I did
- 2:06a news report for our News 12 in Connecticut, just talking a
- 2:09little about the program and the universities bought in and
- 2:13they've been very supportive of it.
- 2:14So it's exciting and I get to build it in my own model and I
- 2:19love division two track and field during any division I've
- 2:21coached just because I can do both things.
- 2:23So I can get those higher end athletes and I would love to get
- 2:26to USA's or another trials, things like that.
- 2:28But I can still get those other athletes that just want the
- 2:30opportunity in order to improve and reach their potential.
- 2:33So that's why I love, well, I have no doubt that they're going
- 2:35to improve in their unit just from talking with you and
- 2:37getting to know you better. All right, we're having a little
- 2:39fun tonight. So we've got 100 random
- 2:42questions. You get to pick the number. 100
- 2:46Do you want a? 100, no, no, let's go 54.
- 2:48I was just 54. I was about to say we've already
- 2:49had 100. 54 is my old football number, so let's go.
- 2:52I was gonna ask for the significance of this.
- 2:53All right, 54, let's go hunting for hobbies.
- 2:55What's your hobby, man? I am and you can't say coaching
- 2:58track and field. Oh no, I'm a huge I make.
- 3:01The rules. I'm a huge comedy nerd, so I go
- 3:04to comedy clubs. I've written open mics.
- 3:07I've. Done various things I've tried
- 3:10to do. Stand up once in a while
- 3:12generally. So you can't say that without
- 3:16you gotta give us a joke or no. I know it's not a joke, like a
- 3:18punchline joke, but there's gotta be.
- 3:21People with their faces return bread.
- 3:23It's there's no bleep button, no editing, no.
- 3:26No, Okay. I thought it was like killing
- 3:29after hours. Maybe these people right here I.
- 3:31Thought this was killing after hours.
- 3:33Don't give, don't give me ideas. We might have to do that.
- 3:36So this is the podcast there where we This is the Buffalo
- 3:38Wings there, right? Yeah.
- 3:39OK. But I thought about trying
- 3:41something like that. You know, we've been out, but
- 3:43this will keep evolving. Yeah, but no.
- 3:45So we talked about it before. You know, I'm a pretty open
- 3:47person, right? I talk about my life quite a
- 3:49bit. And for me, if I do an open mic
- 3:51thing, it's about that. It's about the things that
- 3:53bother me. And that's why I love real
- 3:55world. Yeah, well.
- 3:57The the good thing about comedy is you laugh about the things
- 4:00that hurt you, that the things that I'm most serious about that
- 4:03bother me the worst. When you make jokes and you, you
- 4:06know, joke about them and you mock them almost, it makes it
- 4:09easier to digest and then you have the rest of the day to
- 4:12treat them as awful things. So for me, nothing is, you know,
- 4:17off limits in terms of comedy and things like that.
- 4:19So if you need to get personal, if you need to get a little bit
- 4:21wrong, a little bit rough, that's a great thing to do, so.
- 4:25I love comedy, even if it's something that, like me, I'm a
- 4:27big animal rights guy. I love animals.
- 4:29But if I get to a club and the comedian makes it really funny
- 4:33having a cruelty joke, I'm going to laugh because I know that's
- 4:36something I really care about and they're making me laugh.
- 4:38I got it. It's something I love.
- 4:40I don't know if that question comes up, if anybody else will
- 4:42ever get that same hobby, that's that's really.
- 4:45Like I said, I anytime something pops in my head, I think is a
- 4:48funny idea. I take out my phone in the notes
- 4:49program and I text myself and something like, that's cool, all
- 4:52right. So something that we're doing
- 4:54and only Gill Athletics Connections, alums, you get to
- 4:57do. This is so you were gracious.
- 4:59You were awesome on the podcast. So thankful that you would join
- 5:01us on that podcast. And I grilled you for close to
- 5:04two hours, right? You remember the experience,
- 5:05right? You probably went home and cried
- 5:06a little bit and had to, you know, fuck yourself back up to
- 5:10get back on that horse. Now you get to flip it.
- 5:12You get to ask me one question. Okay.
- 5:15What do you miss most about coaching?
- 5:19That's a great question. You know, I think the thing that
- 5:21I miss the most is there's some freedom in going outside at 2:00
- 5:26every day to work with young people.
- 5:27There's just something about, you know, not being in the
- 5:30office all the time. And I think maybe that's why I
- 5:32like to travel for for my profession here at Gulf Lakes,
- 5:34because I'm out of the office at that point.
- 5:36But there was something about just being toes in the sand pit,
- 5:39helping people work on the long job, house friendships and
- 5:41hurdles. That's probably what I miss the
- 5:43most, the young people. For sure.
- 5:44Well, I mean, if you're doing a great thing here, I we talked
- 5:46about it to a handful of the coaches as I was walking up and
- 5:49then they said where do you head?
- 5:50I said I'll actually told Mike I would go and do the podcast with
- 5:52him and everybody said the same thing.
- 5:54It's a great thing you're doing because for me, I I don't like
- 5:57the cynical podcast. Sometimes people take cynicism
- 6:00as intelligence, where they think if I could be really
- 6:02critical of coaches or athletes and things like that, it makes
- 6:05me sound smarter. Whereas you're highlighting the
- 6:07sport, you're highlighting the coaches, which I think is a
- 6:09great thing. Yeah, well, it's all about
- 6:11uplifting and honoring what you do because what you do is
- 6:13immeasurable for our young. And you could do it while you're
- 6:15dressed like Jake from State Farm.
- 6:17I actually went with my pet Henry, actually.
- 6:21Yeah, yeah. I was kind of hoping.
- 6:22I saw Pat this morning and I was in my workout clothes and he was
- 6:25like, you look like you're going for a run.
- 6:27And I was like, woof. You don't know me, Pat.
- 6:28I'm sure I. Didn't see Pat.
- 6:29I saw Lance harder down here. I saw this man, yeah, I saw
- 6:31Lance in the airport last week. He was flying to Footlocker
- 6:34internationals and in Dallas he walked by and I was like, you
- 6:37don't expect to see them. In the airport.
- 6:38Well, I made a joke because I think the podcast, the extra
- 6:41mine was the the Lynchburg guys. I'm on Lynchburg and along.
- 6:45Yeah, sure enough for an extra. It's funny Lynchburg guys I
- 6:49guess just migrate to my mother. Actually they were on the the
- 6:52shuttle with me to go get cargo as I arrived in the airport, so.
- 6:56It's going thanks to each other the whole time.
- 6:57It's one of the more unique mascots.
- 6:59So you know, Hornet. Life forever, you know.
- 7:01Yeah, I forget the chant, but I'm sure.
- 7:03It might have changed in the last 27 years.
- 7:05Let's get ourselves here, man. Appreciate you so much for being
- 7:07on the show. Alright man.
- 7:08Thanks. To see you appreciate Carol.
