- 0:051. Why is there such an incredible hatred against
- 0:09the Jewish people and against Israel in the days that we are
- 0:12now living in? We even hear people say, oh, I have nothing against the
- 0:17Jews. I hate the Israeli government.
- 0:20It's the government that I have a problem with.
- 0:24So where is all this hatred coming from?
- 0:28Listen in today as we look into these questions and open up the
- 0:32Book of Esther and look at the ancient
- 0:36hatred of Haman, Amalek,
- 0:41and Esau. Welcome to the Daily

- 0:53Welcome to the Daily Audio Torah. Today is August 18th.
- 0:57Now let's continue our journey reading through the entire Bible in one
- 1:01year. This week we are reading from the Israel Bible for the Old Testament
- 1:06and from the King James for the New Testament.
- 1:11Deuteronomy 9:1-15.
- 1:15Hear, O Israel! You are about to cross
- 1:18the Jordan to go in and dispossess nations greater and more populous
- 1:23than you. Great cities with walls sky-high.
- 1:27A people great and tall, the Anakites, of whom you have knowledge.
- 1:32For you have heard it said, who can stand up to the children of Anak?
- 1:36Know then this day that none other than Hashem your God is
- 1:40crossing at your head, a devouring fire.
- 1:43It is He who will wipe them out. He will subdue them before
- 1:48you, that you may quickly dispossess and destroy them. As Hashem
- 1:52promised you. And when Hashem your God has thrust them
- 1:56from your path, say not to yourselves, Hashem has enabled us to possess
- 1:59this land because of our virtues.
- 2:03It is rather because of the wickedness of those nations
- 2:08that Hashem is dispossessing them before you.
- 2:14It is not because of your virtues and your rectitude
- 2:18that you will be able to possess their country. But it is because
- 2:22of their wickedness that Hashem your God is dispossessing
- 2:26those nations before you, and in order to fulfill
- 2:29the oath that Hashem made to your fathers Abraham,
- 2:32Isaac, and Jacob. Know then that it is not for
- 2:36any virtue of yours that Hashem your God is giving you this good land
- 2:40to possess, for you are a stiff-necked people.
- 2:44Remember, never forget, how you provoked Hashem your
- 2:47God to anger in the wilderness from the day that you
- 2:51left the land of Egypt until you reached this place.
- 2:54You have continued defiant toward Hashem.
- 2:59At Horeb you so provoked Hashem that Hashem was angry
- 3:02enough with you to have destroyed you. I had
- 3:06ascended the mountain to receive the tablets of stone, the tablets of
- 3:10the covenant that Hashem had made with you, And I stayed on
- 3:13the mountain 40 days and 40 nights, eating no bread and drinking
- 3:17no water. And Hashem gave me the 2 tablets of
- 3:21stone inscribed by the finger of Hashem with the exact
- 3:25words that Hashem had addressed to you on the mountain out of the fire on
- 3:28the Day of the Assembly. At the end of those 40 days and
- 3:3240 nights, Hashem gave me the 2 tablets of stone,
- 3:36the Tablets of the Covenant. And HaShem
- 3:39said to me, Hurry, go down from here at once, for the people
- 3:43whom you brought out of Egypt have acted wickedly.
- 3:46They have been quick to stray from the path I enjoined upon them.
- 3:50They have made themselves a molten image.
- 3:54HaShem further said to me, I see that this is a stiff-necked
- 3:57people. Let Me alone and I will destroy them and blot out
- 4:01their name from under heaven, and I will make you a nation far
- 4:05more numerous than they. I started them down the
- 4:10mountain, a mountain ablaze with fire, the 2
- 4:14tablets of the covenant in my 2 hands.
- 4:21Esther 1:1-3:15.
- 4:29It happened in the days of Ahasuerus, that Ahasuerus,
- 4:32who reigned over 127 provinces from India
- 4:36to Ethiopia— in those days when King Ahasuerus occupied
- 4:40the royal throne in the fortress of Shushan, in the
- 4:443rd year of his reign, he gave
- 4:49a banquet for all the officials and courtiers, the administration of
- 4:52Persia and Media, the nobles, and the governors
- 4:56of the provinces in his service.
- 4:58For no fewer than 180 days he
- 5:02displayed the vast riches of his kingdom and the splendid glory of his majesty.
- 5:07At the end of this period the king gave a banquet for 7 days
- 5:10in the court of the king's palace garden for all the people
- 5:14who lived in the fortress Shushan, high and low alike.
- 5:18There were hangings of white cotton and blue wool,
- 5:21caught up by cords of fine linen and purple wool,
- 5:25to silver rods and alabaster columns. And there were
- 5:28couches of gold and silver on a pavement of marble,
- 5:31alabaster, mother-of-pearl, and mosaics.
- 5:35Royal wine was served in abundance, as befits
- 5:39a king, in golden beakers, beakers of varied design.
- 5:43And the rule for the drinking was, no restrictions!
- 5:46For the king had given orders to every palace steward to comply
- 5:50with each man's wishes. In addition, Queen Vashti
- 5:54gave a banquet for women in the royal palace of King
- 5:57Ahasuerus. On the 7th day, when the king was merry with
- 6:01wine, he ordered Mehuman, Bizatha, Harbona,
- 6:06Bigtha, Abagtha, Zethir, and Carcas,
- 6:10the 7 eunuchs in attendance on King Ahasuerus,
- 6:13to bring Queen Vashti before the king wearing a royal
- 6:17diadem, to display her beauty to the people
- 6:21and the officials, for she was a beautiful woman.
- 6:25But Queen Vashti refused to come at the king's command conveyed
- 6:29by the eunuchs. The king was greatly incensed,
- 6:32and his fury burned within him. Then the king consulted
- 6:36the sages learned in procedure, for it was the royal practice
- 6:40to turn to all who were versed in law and precedent.
- 6:44His closest advisors were Carshena, Shethar,
- 6:48Admatha, Tarshish, Meres, Marsena, and Memucan,
- 6:52the 7 ministers of Persia and Media, who had access
- 6:56to the royal presence and occupied the first place in the kingdom. What,
- 6:59he asked, shall be done according to the law to Queen Vashti
- 7:03for failing to obey the command of King Ahasuerus conveyed
- 7:08by the eunuchs? Thereupon Memucan declared
- 7:12in the presence of the king and the ministers, Queen Vashti has committed
- 7:17an offense not only against Your Majesty, but also against
- 7:21all the officials and against all the peoples in all the provinces
- 7:24of King Ahasuerus. For the queen's behavior will make
- 7:28all wives despise their husbands, as they reflect
- 7:32that King Ahasuerus himself ordered Queen Vashti to
- 7:35be brought before him, but she would not come. To this
- 7:40very day the ladies of Persia and Media, who have heard of the queen's behavior,
- 7:44will cite it to all your majesty's officials,
- 7:47and there will be no end of scorn and provocation.
- 7:51If it please your majesty, let a royal edict be issued by
- 7:55you, and let it be written into the laws of Persia and Media,
- 7:58so that it cannot be abrogated, that Vashti shall never
- 8:02enter the presence of King Ahasuerus, and let Your Majesty
- 8:06bestow her royal state upon another who is more worthy
- 8:10than she. Then will the judgment executed by
- 8:14Your Majesty resound throughout your realm, vast though
- 8:18it is, and all wives will treat their husbands with respect,
- 8:22high and low alike. The proposal was approved
- 8:25by the king and the ministers, and the king did as Memucan
- 8:29proposed. Dispatches were sent to all the provinces of
- 8:34the king, to every province in its own script and to every nation
- 8:37in its own language, that every man would wield authority
- 8:41in his home and speak the language of his own people.
- 8:46Sometime afterward, when the anger of King Ahasuerus subsided,
- 8:50he thought of Vashti and what she had done and what had been decreed against
- 8:54her. The king's servants who attended him said, Let beautiful young
- 8:58virgins be sought out for Your Majesty. Let Your Majesty
- 9:02appoint officers in every province of Your realm to assemble
- 9:07all the beautiful young virgins at the fortress Shushan in the harem
- 9:11under the supervision of Heges, the king's eunuch,
- 9:15guardian of the women. Let them be provided with their cosmetics,
- 9:19and let the maiden who pleases Your Majesty be queen instead
- 9:24of Vashti. The proposal pleased the king and he acted upon
- 9:27it. In the fortress Shushan lived a
- 9:31Jew by the name of Mordecai, son of Ja'ir,
- 9:35son of Shimei, son of Keresh, a Benjamite.
- 9:39He had been exiled from Jerusalem in the group that
- 9:42was carried into exile along with King Jeconiah
- 9:47of Judah, who had been driven into exile by King Nebuchadnezzar.
- 9:51Of Babylon. He was
- 9:55foster father to Hadassah, that is Esther, his uncle's
- 9:59daughter, for she had neither father nor mother.
- 10:03The maiden was shapely and beautiful, and when her
- 10:07father and mother died, Mordecai adopted her as his own daughter.
- 10:11When the king's order and edict was proclaimed, and when many girls
- 10:15were assembled in the fortress, Sushan under the supervision
- 10:19of Hegai, Esther too was taken into the king's palace
- 10:23under the supervision of Hegai, guardian of the women.
- 10:27The girl pleased him and won his favor, and he hastened to furnish
- 10:31her with her cosmetics and her rations as well as with the 7
- 10:35maids who were her due from the king's palace,
- 10:39and he treated her and her maids with special kindness in
- 10:42the harem. Esther did not reveal her people or her
- 10:46kindred, for Mordecai had told her not to reveal it.
- 10:50Every single day Mordecai would walk about in front of the court
- 10:54of the harem to learn how Esther was faring and what was happening to her.
- 10:59When each girl's turn came to go to King Ahasuerus at the end of the
- 11:0312 months' treatment prescribed for women, for that was the period
- 11:07spent on beautifying them, 6 months with oil
- 11:11of myrrh, and 6 months with perfumes and women's
- 11:14cosmetics. And it was after that that the girl would
- 11:18go to the king. Whatever she asked for would be given her
- 11:21to take with her from the harem to the king's palace.
- 11:25She would go in the evening and leave in the morning for a second harem
- 11:29in charge of Shaggas, the king's eunuch, guardian of the
- 11:33concubines. She would not go again to the king unless the
- 11:37king wanted her. When she would be summoned by name.
- 11:41When the turn came for Esther, daughter of Avakil,
- 11:46the uncle of Mordecai, who had adopted her
- 11:49as his own daughter, to go to the king, she did not ask
- 11:53for anything but what Hegai, the king's eunuch, guardian of the women,
- 11:57advised to her. Yet Esther won the admiration
- 12:01of all who saw her. Esther was taken to
- 12:05King Ahasuerus, to his royal palace, In the 10th
- 12:09month, which is the month of Tevet, in the 7th year of his reign,
- 12:13the king loved Esther more than all the other women, and she won
- 12:16his grace and favor more than all the virgins. So he
- 12:20set a royal diadem on her head and made her queen instead
- 12:25of Vashti. The king gave a great banquet for all his officials
- 12:29and courtiers, the banquet of Esther. He proclaimed
- 12:33a remission of taxes for the provinces and distributed gifts
- 12:36as befits a king. When the virgins were assembled a second
- 12:40time, Mordecai sat in the palace gate.
- 12:44But Esther did not reveal her kindred or her people,
- 12:48as Mordecai had instructed her. For Esther obeyed Mordecai's
- 12:52bidding as she had done when she was under his tutelage.
- 12:56At that time, when Mordecai was sitting in the palace gate,
- 13:00Bigthan and Teresh, two of the king's eunuchs who guarded the threshold,
- 13:04became angry and plotted to do away with King Ahasuerus.
- 13:09Mordecai learned of it and told it to Queen Esther, and Esther
- 13:13reported it to the king in Mordecai's name. The matter was investigated
- 13:17and found to be so, and the 2 were impaled on stakes.
- 13:21This was recorded in the Book of Annals at the instance of
- 13:25the king. Some time afterward King
- 13:29Ahasuerus promoted Haman son of Hammedatha the
- 13:33Agagite. He advanced him and seated him higher
- 13:37than any of his fellow officials. All the king's courtiers
- 13:41in the palace gate knelt and bowed low to Haman, for such was
- 13:45the king's order concerning him. But Mordecai would not
- 13:48kneel or bow low. Then the king's courtiers who were
- 13:53in the palace gate said to Mordecai, Why do you disobey the king's
- 13:56order? When they spoke to him day after day and he would
- 14:00not listen to them, they told Haman in order to see whether Mordecai's
- 14:04resolve would prevail. For he had explained to them that
- 14:08he was a Jew.
- 14:15When Haman saw that Mordecai would not kneel and bow low to him,
- 14:19Haman was filled with rage.
- 14:22But he disdained to lay hands on Mordecai alone, Having been
- 14:26told who Mordecai's people were, Haman plotted
- 14:30to do away with all the Jews,
- 14:33Mordecai's people, throughout the kingdom of
- 14:37Ahasuerus. In the first month, that is the
- 14:40month of Nisan, in the 12th year of King Ahasuerus,
- 14:44Pur, which means the lot, was cast before Haman
- 14:47concerning every day and every month until it
- 14:51fell on the 12th month, that is the month of Adar.
- 14:54Haman then said to King Ahasuerus, There is a certain people scattered
- 14:58and dispersed among the other peoples in all the provinces of your
- 15:02realm, whose laws are different from
- 15:07those of any other people, and who do not obey
- 15:11the king's laws. It is not in Your Majesty's interest to
- 15:14tolerate them. If it please Your Majesty,
- 15:17let an edict be drawn for their destruction. And I will
- 15:21pay 10,000 kikarot of silver to the stewards
- 15:25for deposit in the royal treasury.
- 15:28Thereupon the king removed his signet ring from his hand
- 15:31and gave it to Haman son of Hammedatha the Agagite,
- 15:35the foe of the Jews. And the king said, The money
- 15:38and the people are yours to do with as you see fit.
- 15:43On the 13th day of the first month the king's scribes were summoned,
- 15:47And a decree was issued, as Haman directed, to the king's satraps,
- 15:51the governors of every province, and to the officials
- 15:54of every people, to every province in its own script and
- 15:58to every people in its own language. The orders were issued
- 16:03in the name of King Ahasuerus and sealed with the king's signet.
- 16:08Accordingly, written instructions were dispatched by
- 16:11couriers to all the king's provinces to destroy,
- 16:15massacre and exterminate all the Jews,
- 16:19young and old, children and women, on a single day,
- 16:23on the 13th day of the 12th month, that is,
- 16:27the month of Adar, and to plunder their possessions.
- 16:31The text of the document was to the effect that a
- 16:35law would be proclaimed in every single province. It was to be
- 16:38publicly displayed to all the people, so they might be ready
- 16:43for that day. The courtiers went out posthaste
- 16:47on the royal mission, and the decree was proclaimed in
- 16:51the fortress Shushan. The king and Haman sat
- 16:54down to feast, but the city of Shushan was
- 16:58dumbfounded.
- 17:051 Corinthians 11. 17 to
- 17:0934.
- 17:19Now in this that I, Paul, declare to you, I praise
- 17:23you not that you come together not for the better but for the
- 17:27worse. For first of all, when you come together
- 17:30in the church, I hear that there be divisions among you. And I
- 17:34partly believe it. For there must be also heresies among you,
- 17:38that they which are approved may be made manifest among you.
- 17:42When you come together therefore into one place, this is not
- 17:46to eat the Lord's Supper. For in eating everyone takes before
- 17:50other his own supper, and one is hungry and another is
- 17:54drunken. What? Have you not houses to eat and to drink
- 17:58in? Or despise the church of God and shame them that have
- 18:01not? What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you in this?
- 18:05I praise you not. For I have received of the Lord that which
- 18:10also I delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus the same night
- 18:14in which he was betrayed took bread. And when he had given thanks,
- 18:18he broke it and said, Take and eat, this is my body which is
- 18:21broken for you, this do in remembrance of me.
- 18:25And after the same manner also he took the cup,
- 18:29when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my
- 18:32blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance
- 18:37of me. For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup,
- 18:40you do show the Lord's death until he comes.
- 18:44Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread and drink this cup of the Lord
- 18:47unworthily shall be guilty of the body and blood of
- 18:51the Lord. But let a man examine himself, and so let
- 18:55him eat of that bread and drink of that cup. For he that eats and
- 18:59drinks unworthily eats and drinks damnation to himself,
- 19:02not discerning the Lord's body. For this cause many
- 19:06are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep.
- 19:10For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged.
- 19:14But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not
- 19:19be condemned with the world. Therefore, my brethren, when we come together
- 19:23to eat, tarry one for another. And if any man hunger,
- 19:27let him eat at home. That you come not together to
- 19:31condemnation. And the rest will I set in order when I
- 19:35come. Psalm 35:17-28.
- 19:41Lord, how long will You look on? Rescue my soul from
- 19:45their destructions, my darling from the lions. I will
- 19:49give You thanks in the great congregation; I will praise You among
- 19:53the people. Let not them that are my enemies wrongfully
- 19:57rejoice over me, neither let them wink with the eye that hate
- 20:01me without a cause. For they speak not peace, but they devise
- 20:05deceitful matters against them that are quiet in the
- 20:09land. Yes, they opened their mouth wide against me
- 20:13and said, Aha, aha, our eye has seen it.
- 20:16This you have seen, O Lord. Keep not silent,
- 20:19O Lord. Be not far from me. Stir up yourself and awake
- 20:23to my judgment. Even unto my cause, my God
- 20:27and my Lord. Judge me,
- 20:31O Lord my God, according to your righteousness, and let
- 20:34them not rejoice over me. Let them not say in their hearts,
- 20:38Ah, so would we have it! Let them not say, We have swallowed
- 20:42him up! Let them be ashamed and brought to confusion together
- 20:46that rejoice at my hurt. Let them be clothed with
- 20:50shame and dishonor that magnify themselves against me.
- 20:54Let them shout for joy and be glad that favor my righteous cause.
- 20:58Yes, let them say continually, Let the Lord be
- 21:01magnified, which has pleasure in the prosperity of His servant.
- 21:06And my tongue shall speak of Your righteousness and
- 21:09of Your praise all the day long.
- 21:15Proverbs 21:19-20.
- 21:18It is better to dwell in the wilderness than with the contentious
- 21:22and an angry woman. There is treasure to be desired
- 21:26and oil in the dwelling of the wise, but a foolish
- 21:30man spends it up. I want to speak to you today from our
- 21:34reading from Esther chapters 1 to 3, and I want
- 21:38to zoom in on a particular character, a central figure in this
- 21:41story as it unfolds, and that would be Haman,
- 21:45the son of Hammedatha the Agagite.
- 21:48And so Haman gets a promotion and he wants
- 21:53all of the servants to bow down to him.
- 21:57And in chapter 3, it goes on to say, verse 5,
- 22:00when Haman saw that Mordecai the Jew did not
- 22:04bow nor did him reverence, then Haman was full of wrath
- 22:08and he thought scorn to lay hands on Mordecai alone, for they
- 22:12had shown him the people of Mordecai. Therefore Haman sought to
- 22:16destroy all the Jews that were throughout the whole kingdom
- 22:20of Ahasuerus, even the people of Mordecai.
- 22:25So the notion of genocide against the
- 22:29Jews is an ancient one, and here's an example of Haman
- 22:33wanting to genocide all the Jews because he did not like
- 22:37Mordecai. Where does this ancient hatred
- 22:40come from? It is hardwired into the genes,
- 22:45and it goes back to Esau. So Jacob
- 22:50and Esau are twin brothers. Esau hates
- 22:54Jacob. Esau tries to kill Jacob while
- 22:57they're still in the womb, to step on his head and crush his— the
- 23:01tender spot on his head. And then, of course,
- 23:05later on, it's in his heart to murder him. Um,
- 23:09and so Esau despised his birthright,
- 23:12sold it for a bowl of soup. Jacob loved the Torah,
- 23:16and Esau was a man of the fields. So when
- 23:20Jacob receives the birthright from his father,
- 23:24then Esau is exceedingly full
- 23:28of bitterness, and he wants to kill his brother.
- 23:32So God himself says Jacob
- 23:37have I loved, but Esau I have hated.
- 23:40And so this ancient hatred begins with Esau,
- 23:44and then Esau has a grandson by the name of Amalek.
- 23:49And Amalek, being the grandson of Esau,
- 23:53um, want— basically goes
- 23:57to battle against Israel in Rephidim.
- 24:00And the— this very famous battle, Moses keeps
- 24:05his arms raised, and as long as his arms are raised, Israel prevails
- 24:09in the battle. But as soon as his arms droop, Israel begins to
- 24:13lose. So, uh, boots on the ground
- 24:17battle with Amalek, Moses is fighting a spiritual battle by interceding
- 24:20and praying for them. So now later
- 24:25on, Saul is given orders from the Lord to go
- 24:29and attack Amalek and utterly destroy all that
- 24:33they have and do not spare them. Kill both man and woman,
- 24:36infant and nursing child, ox and sheep, camel and donkey. That's from
- 24:401 Samuel chapter 15, verses 1 to 3.
- 24:44Saul does not obey the Lord. He allows the king of Amalek,
- 24:48King Agag, to live. And because
- 24:51of this, God regrets that he has set
- 24:55up Saul as the king, for he has turned back from following me and has
- 24:59not performed my commandments. He didn't obey.
- 25:02Okay, so now we have Esau, his grandson
- 25:06is Amalek, and then we have Haman. And Haman
- 25:10is the Agagite. Haman of Hadathah
- 25:15of the Agagite. He is of the lineage of Agag.
- 25:18I believe he's the grandson to Amalek.
- 25:22So this ancient hatred against Jacob,
- 25:25against the descendants of Jacob— it's
- 25:29a Jacob and Esau conflict, and the descendants
- 25:33of Jacob and the descendants of Esau. So Haman
- 25:39now wants to wipe out all the Jews.
- 25:43And you look at it today, Hamas When you look at that word
- 25:48in the Hebrew, it means violence. In the Book
- 25:52of Genesis, when it says in Genesis chapter 6 that the earth was filled with
- 25:56violence and God was grieved that He had
- 26:00created mankind, that word violence in English,
- 26:04when you look at it in Hebrew, it is literally the word Hamas.
- 26:09So We can't really prove it genetically
- 26:13or genealogically, but spiritually,
- 26:17those people who hate Israel and who hate the
- 26:21Jews and who want to genocide the Jews and wipe Israel off the
- 26:25map, I believe that they are descendants, spiritual descendants
- 26:30of Esau, Amalek, and Haman.
- 26:34And we are certainly seeing a tremendous uprising of
- 26:38Jew hatred and anti-Semitism and
- 26:42anti-Zionism in the days that we live in.
- 26:45It is truly a spiritual battle, and it goes back all the
- 26:49way to Esau. So now, as we
- 26:53continue to read the book of Esther, we're going to watch and see how she
- 26:57handles this edict of genocide
- 27:01against her people. How do we handle hatred.
- 27:08When somebody hates you just because you are Jewish, or somebody hates you
- 27:12just because you are a female, or somebody hates you just because you are
- 27:16whatever the color of your skin is.
- 27:20How do we handle that biblically? We will learn as we
- 27:24continue on in the book of Esther. Stay with us.
