- 0:00Speaker 1: I mentioned that next hour we're going to hear from
- 0:05Speaker 1: Vick Shaffer, Texas women's basketball head coach. We'll hear some
- 0:08Speaker 1: next hour and then some of the four o'clock hour
- 0:10Speaker 1: tomorrow we'll hear from Rodney Terry. In those same hours
- 0:16Speaker 1: as well, we'll hear from the Loghorns men's head coach.
- 0:19Speaker 1: On the eve of their matchup against New Mexico State.
- 0:22Speaker 1: They play the New Mexico State Aggies tomorrow evening at
- 0:29Speaker 1: Moody Center at seven o'clock. Hope to see you out there,
- 0:32Speaker 1: and of course you can also hear it tomorrow evening.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Is it also on ninety eight one tomorrow seven o'clock tip?
- 0:38Speaker 1: Yes, I thought I remember that, but I just wanted
- 0:41Speaker 1: to make sure they want to speak out a turn
- 0:43Speaker 1: on that. But also in addition to here on a
- 0:48Speaker 1: thirteen hundred zone, it is also on ninety eight point
- 0:52Speaker 1: one Fmkvett tomorrow night. New Mexico's State, by the ways,
- 0:55Speaker 1: coach by Jason Houghton. You may recognize the name. He
- 1:00Speaker 1: was a coach at Sam Houston and did a really
- 1:03Speaker 1: good job there. But he's been around a lot. In fact,
- 1:10Speaker 1: our man Mike Hardball Harge must know him well. You see,
- 1:14Speaker 1: Jason Newton played at Colleen Ellison and uh, and of
- 1:22Speaker 1: course that's where Arch is from. And Harge has him
- 1:24Speaker 1: on the show tomorrow morning. So Jason Newton will be
- 1:27Speaker 1: on on the program tomorrow morning. Uh, He'll be on
- 1:32Speaker 1: the morning kickoff with Hardball and also with Mark Henry.
- 1:37Speaker 1: That'll be tomorrow morning from seven to nine here on
- 1:41Speaker 1: the Zone. So yeah, and they also have the mayor on.
- 1:44Speaker 1: Kwan Cosby have Q on tomorrow as well to talk
- 1:49Speaker 1: some long WRN football. But Jason Newton is from Colleen
- 1:52Speaker 1: in fact, an old friend of mine. This is this
- 1:54Speaker 1: is weird about all the family connections. A longtime friend
- 1:59Speaker 1: of mine is Dennis who used to be the boys
- 2:01Speaker 1: basketball coach at Westwood got him to the state tournament
- 2:03Speaker 1: one year, and he'd coached girls at Round Rocket that
- 2:06Speaker 1: has been around a while. His brother, Darden Burton, was
- 2:11Speaker 1: my college roommate, one of my college roommates when we
- 2:14Speaker 1: went to North Texas together. Dennis and I have known
- 2:16Speaker 1: a long known each other a long time. And of
- 2:19Speaker 1: course Dennis, of course, like I said, coach high school
- 2:21Speaker 1: basketball in the area for a long time. And we
- 2:24Speaker 1: were texting and he said, I coached against Jason Hooton
- 2:27Speaker 1: when he played at Colleen Ellison, and one of my
- 2:30Speaker 1: best players, Ashton Mitchell, played for him at Sam Houston.
- 2:34Speaker 1: So yeah, the connections that go forward on that New
- 2:38Speaker 1: Mexico stable going at four and five in the game
- 2:39Speaker 1: of Mare of the Longhorns have only played them four
- 2:44Speaker 1: times in their history. The last time they played them
- 2:48Speaker 1: was November twenty third. It was two thousand and eight.
- 2:50Speaker 1: I remember this. This is in Newark in the Legends
- 2:53Speaker 1: Classic and Texas played in that event, did really well,
- 3:02Speaker 1: wanted I think, beat Tennessee in the finals that year,
- 3:06Speaker 1: and that was in Newark there at the Prudential Center, which,
- 3:09Speaker 1: by the way, is where the Texas women will be
- 3:12Speaker 1: playing Maryland on MLK Day. They're in Newark, New Jersey,
- 3:16Speaker 1: so anyway, there's there's some things they haven't played in there.
- 3:19Speaker 1: And they also played New Mexico State in the NCAA
- 3:21Speaker 1: Tournament the year that Kevin Durant played for Texas, the
- 3:24Speaker 1: O six oh seven season, they played up in Spokane
- 3:26Speaker 1: and in the first round. Marvin Menzies was the head
- 3:29Speaker 1: coach of New Mexico State back then, and the Long
- 3:32Speaker 1: Runs beat them before losing the USC and OJ Mayo
- 3:35Speaker 1: in a four versus five matchup in the second round
- 3:38Speaker 1: for the tournament. Yeah, so there was that NFL notes
- 3:45Speaker 1: that I wanted to get to you familiar with Noah Brown.
- 3:51Speaker 2: Yeah, former House state receiver played at Dallas for a
- 3:53Speaker 2: couple of years and then just signed with the Texans
- 3:56Speaker 2: for a little bit maybe and then I don't know
- 3:59Speaker 2: where he's at now.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Oh, you should remember him. You should remember him. He's
- 4:02Speaker 1: the one who caught the hail mary against the Bears.
- 4:04Speaker 2: Ah, that's right. He was Washington that they called it
- 4:07Speaker 2: what Noah's ark or something like that like that.
- 4:11Speaker 1: Unfortunately, he's likely going to miss the rest of the
- 4:15Speaker 1: season after suffering what is being described as a significant
- 4:21Speaker 1: internal injury. Now, if you ask me, almost any internal
- 4:28Speaker 1: injury is significant. That's like saying, you know, that's kind
- 4:31Speaker 1: of from the Department of redundancy department, you know, significant
- 4:36Speaker 1: internal injury. Anyway, it was described as a rib injury,
- 4:42Speaker 1: and of course Dan Quinn, they head coach there, said
- 4:49Speaker 1: he's not been placed on injured reserve, but it's likely
- 4:53Speaker 1: heading that way. He's the one who caught that hail
- 4:56Speaker 1: mary passed against the Bears. Back on October twenty seventh,
- 4:58Speaker 1: the Commander's eight and five, and right now they're holding
- 5:02Speaker 1: on to the seven seed in the playoff race, heading
- 5:08Speaker 1: in the Sunday's game at New Orleans. So which brings
- 5:14Speaker 1: me to my question for you Cam. First of all,
- 5:19Speaker 1: with a look at the weekend schedule, RAMS forty nine
- 5:24Speaker 1: ers tomorrow night, all right, then the Sunday schedule, Kansas
- 5:28Speaker 1: City at Cleveland, Cincinnati at Tennessee. The Kansas City Cleveland
- 5:34Speaker 1: thing doesn't really for me hold a great deal of suspense.
- 5:39Speaker 2: I think the Chiefs will handle their business.
- 5:41Speaker 1: We saw Cleveland beat Pittsburgh in a blizzard up there
- 5:44Speaker 1: a little over a week ago. But still Cincinnati, Tennessee, Washington,
- 5:50Speaker 1: New Orleans is important. Baltimore playing at the Giants I
- 5:54Speaker 1: don't think Baltimore at the Giants is that significant other
- 5:57Speaker 1: than the fact that the Ravens are what two games
- 6:00Speaker 1: back of the Steelers, so they really have to keep
- 6:02Speaker 1: winning on that. Jets of Jacksonville not significant. And then
- 6:08Speaker 1: you've got you've got some significant games here.
- 6:12Speaker 2: Well, all right, I'm gonna say the Cowboys and the
- 6:14Speaker 2: Panthers is not significant. Now that the Cowboys are really wow,
- 6:18Speaker 2: you know who's favorite in that game? Craig Carolina is right?
- 6:21Speaker 2: How about that? How about that tells how far the match?
- 6:26Speaker 2: In week three? After a week four, after Bryce got benched,
- 6:30Speaker 2: being told yeah, the Panthers are going to be favored
- 6:33Speaker 2: in that game, you're thinking, Wow, is Andy Dalton on
- 6:35Speaker 2: a heater to the Cowboys team plane crash? Nope, Cowboys
- 6:38Speaker 2: just sucking. Bryce Young actually turns out to be good quarterback.
- 6:41Speaker 1: Yeah, he's not a bust like a lot of people thought.
- 6:44Speaker 1: Through three weeks and a disaster and all that other
- 6:46Speaker 1: kind of stuff. I just needed some time.
- 6:49Speaker 2: And the same people who are saying that about kill
- 6:51Speaker 2: Williams right now, ye take no, please, just take no. Yes,
- 6:55Speaker 2: it's okay to be patient. History teaches us.
- 7:00Speaker 1: In this game that quarterbacks that you think are not
- 7:04Speaker 1: very good in their first couple of years wind up
- 7:08Speaker 1: blossoming into pretty good quarterbacks. And I'm going to take
- 7:11Speaker 1: you all the way back to the late fifties on this.
- 7:13Speaker 1: I think the first big example this was Bart Starr
- 7:16Speaker 1: when he was with the Packers. His first three years.
- 7:19Speaker 1: He was either on the bench or splitting time. Lombardi
- 7:22Speaker 1: comes in and people thought, hey, not so much Johnny
- 7:25Speaker 1: and Ninis was cut by the Steelers and had to
- 7:29Speaker 1: hitch hike homb in nineteen fifty five and was playing
- 7:33Speaker 1: semi pro football for a team called the Bloomfield Rams
- 7:37Speaker 1: in the Pittsburgh area for six dollars a game on
- 7:40Speaker 1: Thursday nights until the Colts saw his name on the
- 7:44Speaker 1: waiver wire and a couple other things and brought him
- 7:46Speaker 1: in and then the rest was history.
- 7:48Speaker 2: So those two guys were like that.
- 7:51Speaker 1: There were other quarterbacks throughout the sixties into the seventies
- 7:55Speaker 1: that people kind of gave up on.
- 7:56Speaker 2: Billy Kilmer was a running back when he was the
- 7:58Speaker 2: forty nine.
- 7:59Speaker 1: Ers, coming out of use and eventually blossomed into an
- 8:03Speaker 1: NFL caliber quarterback. There were a lot of people giving
- 8:07Speaker 1: up on Roger Staubach because the military commitment and saying
- 8:10Speaker 1: that he couldn't get it done, and finally Tom Landry
- 8:14Speaker 1: gave him the full time chance midway through the seventy
- 8:17Speaker 1: one season and they go on to win their first
- 8:19Speaker 1: Super Bowl. So there are lots of examples of this
- 8:24Speaker 1: over the years. There are those who would say that
- 8:27Speaker 1: the Rams gave up on Zared Goff. I disagree with that.
- 8:30Speaker 1: He was their starter he played, they went to a
- 8:32Speaker 1: Super Bowl, but the Rams didn't think he could get
- 8:36Speaker 1: them over the hump, and that's why they made the
- 8:37Speaker 1: deal with the Lions. The trade seems to have worked
- 8:40Speaker 1: out for both sides. Matthew Stafford led him to a
- 8:43Speaker 1: Super Bowl and win, and GoF has Lions with the
- 8:45Speaker 1: best record in the NFL right now, So that that
- 8:48Speaker 1: appears to be one of those rare trades that benefits POSTA.
- 8:52Speaker 1: I'll give you another one. This is the guy who
- 8:54Speaker 1: was a great player and won two Super Bowls, Jim Plunkett.
- 9:00Speaker 1: He was drafted by the Patriots. They had a horrific
- 9:02Speaker 1: offensive on they were still known as the Boston Patriots,
- 9:05Speaker 1: changing their name to the New England Patriots. And year
- 9:07Speaker 1: they drafted him, and he was viewed as being a
- 9:10Speaker 1: bust for the Patriots and then the forty nine ers,
- 9:13Speaker 1: and mean, he played on bad teams. He finally got
- 9:16Speaker 1: with a good team. He got with the Raiders and
- 9:18Speaker 1: they went two Super Bowls.
- 9:20Speaker 2: So sometimes it just.
- 9:21Speaker 1: Takes time with quarterbacks for them to you know, fully develop.
- 9:27Speaker 1: Did you mention Sam Darnold, Sam Donold, there's another thing.
- 9:31Speaker 1: I mean, the New York Jets quit him yep. These
- 9:33Speaker 1: San Francisco forty nine ers quit him. The Carolina Panthers
- 9:36Speaker 1: quit him on this fourth team, I think, yeah, and
- 9:39Speaker 1: you know it's working with the Vices.
- 9:40Speaker 2: Fans, plug your ears. Baker Mayfield, same thing. Yeah, no
- 9:44Speaker 2: number one draft pick now of course in Cleveland, he
- 9:46Speaker 2: was injured for most of his tenure there.
- 9:49Speaker 1: And it's the Cleveland Browns organization. They for quarterbacks. It's
- 9:53Speaker 1: the Siberia of the National Football League.
- 9:55Speaker 2: But it's two guys that I mean. The Vikings are
- 9:58Speaker 2: a game back from the Detroit Lion who are the
- 10:00Speaker 2: prohibitive favorite in the NFC.
- 10:02Speaker 1: So Vikings are going to be in the playoffs. Yeah, sure,
- 10:05Speaker 1: for sure wins. Yeah, and he's a big reason why
- 10:09Speaker 1: on that Miami in Houston. That's an important game. Miami
- 10:14Speaker 1: still kind of hanging out there with a shot at
- 10:17Speaker 1: the playoffs. Texans trying to maintain their hole on the
- 10:21Speaker 1: South Colts at Denver, important Colts on the outside of
- 10:26Speaker 1: the shot maybe to get in Denver. Very much in
- 10:28Speaker 1: playoff contention Buffalo and Detroit. It lost a little bit
- 10:32Speaker 1: of its luster, a little bit, a little bit of
- 10:34Speaker 1: its luster when the Bills lost to the Rams. Still
- 10:37Speaker 1: important game, very important game playing in Detroit. Pittsburgh at Philadelphia,
- 10:43Speaker 1: huge game. If two division leaders in the Keystone State,
- 10:47Speaker 1: that's big. New England and Arizona not so much other
- 10:51Speaker 1: than the Cardinals trying to hang around there in the
- 10:53Speaker 1: NFC West, Tampa Bay at the Chargers that is important
- 10:57Speaker 1: for both teams with regard to playoffs. In Green Bay
- 10:59Speaker 1: at c APP is big. And then and then they
- 11:02Speaker 1: went back to another double header on Monday night. There's
- 11:05Speaker 1: another double hitter Bears Vikings. That one's on ABC and
- 11:11Speaker 1: Falcons Raiders on ESPN. Okay Raiders not so much. Falcon's
- 11:18Speaker 1: still with a shot. So anyway, I look at some
- 11:20Speaker 1: NFL notes and things up next inconceivable that's next here
- 11:25Speaker 1: on sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone and the
- 11:27Speaker 1: iHeartRadio app
