- 0:00Uh, I'm excited because these guys have done amazing things in their career and
- 0:04the cool thing is they keep I don't want to say reinventing, because you
- 0:08do what you do, but you find a way to do it. New
- 0:10Lady A is in the house. What's up, y'all? Hey, good
- 0:13to see you, got good to see you guys. First of all,
- 0:15how good does it feel? The holidays is a nice reset, right,
- 0:18hang with the family, hang with kids, just unplug in general. But
- 0:22how good does it feel to be like all right? Because you need a
- 0:25break at some point you're like love y'all, but like go away for a
- 0:28few weeks. We had holiday break and then if you live in Nashville,
- 0:31you know, about two weeks after school started back, we got a ton
- 0:34of snow and so then we were all snowed in for a week. So
- 0:37definitely feeling like you know, January right here at the tail end of it.
- 0:41Find in our rhythm for sure. What's the best part about when you
- 0:45guys get back together, like after a holiday break or like you come off
- 0:49the road tour, Like what's the best markets? Like best friends? It's
- 0:52like I've got, you know, a couple buddies that we see each other
- 0:54once twice a year, and it's like no time has passed. Same thing
- 0:57with us and everybody, you know, the first fifty minutes is asking about
- 1:00what our kids are doing. But there's always just a new excitement too,
- 1:03and with anytime we have something new and new music to talk about, and
- 1:07that kind of that like cautiously optimistic excitement. The uncertainty is it gonna work?
- 1:14People gonna love it? I hope, you know, And you don't
- 1:19know if they're gonna, you know, like it or not. And so
- 1:21there's I love that feeling of just the unknown. But as far as us
- 1:26getting back together, man, it's always like no time. You know,
- 1:30we're always in constant communication. They're not to say we're on a group text
- 1:34that one of us says something every day, probably every day, I know
- 1:38what, we know what everybody's jave, just got back from a Honting trip.
- 1:42Hillary's girl's been in a play, you knows, just turned six.
- 1:46Yeah, yeah, I'm probably on a golf course. Not not right now.
- 1:49I will say, you guys do a phenomenal job, and it's and
- 1:53i'd imagine it's it's easy to lose your identity when you guys are built career
- 1:57wise the way you are, but you do a phenomenal job that like being
- 2:01individuals because there's a lot of groups. It's like, oh, yeah,
- 2:05I know, I'm not gonna use names because but there's a band that you're
- 2:07like, oh, I know that band. Who's your favorite? The guy
- 2:12the one with the right but everybody knows y'all's names. You've done a phenomenal
- 2:15job like being a group of being an individual Was that on purpose? Like
- 2:20let's be together but not lose ourselves. I mean, I think I don't
- 2:23know if we fell into it. I think over the years of being in
- 2:28a band together for seventeen years, realizing that we need to celebrate who we
- 2:32are as individuals and what we bring to the table. I think has been
- 2:36a huge part of our work of like we love that we're a part of
- 2:38this thing that we get to do together, but who we are separately is
- 2:44to be celebrated to. I mean, like, for example, Dave can
- 2:46do all of the tech production amazing. I mean, he would listen to
- 2:52all the voicemails on tour that we would be putting together to put the set
- 2:55list together, like all the things techy production, and Dave is like the
- 3:00guru. We all have our roles, you know that that we lean into
- 3:05and celebrate in one another. How has that helped you over time because obviously
- 3:10most recently within the last lesson a year, right, No, it's actually
- 3:15been a year and a half now has really over year and half? Yeah?
- 3:17Wow? Yeah, sober for yeah, but but you have but you
- 3:22put out your own project. Oh gosh, you put out your own music,
- 3:24right yeah, well the first yeah, the project, uh, which
- 3:28we always laugh. I was like it was when Hillary had her first child.
- 3:30I was like, I realized that I'm not good at sitting still.
- 3:34But I've had a handful of songs that you know, never fit our project
- 3:37that I wanted to show the world. And and then shortly after my sobriety
- 3:40journey, Dave and I wrote a song called as Far as You Could,
- 3:45just about about that journey. And so I think that's what's nice about kind
- 3:50of where we're at is people realize, because you know, the past,
- 3:53it might have been a fear of like, oh, if we do something,
- 3:55you know outside of the group, they're gonna think we're breaking up.
- 3:59I think people get it now. And it's like it's not really our you
- 4:01know, for me, it's just putting out music. It's not a focus
- 4:03of trying to like build necessarily some separate thing, you know. It's just
- 4:09like it's nice to be able to have different artistic outlets, but it but
- 4:12always know that, you know, Ladier is the home that you come back
- 4:15to. And I just think we're in such a cool spot too, where
- 4:19we all have different inspirations, you know, where we kind of come in
- 4:23and like what's going on in your life and wanting to write and be in
- 4:26a really honest place with our songwriting. I think is leading us into a
- 4:30cool direction with this project. When it comes to the last release we had
- 4:34from you guys October, right, the two Song Project yep. Yeah,
- 4:39So that's unique because usually it's like here's an album which now can be up
- 4:43to one hundred and seventy eight thousand songs. Yeah, but what what made
- 4:47that? Because usually if it's an EP, we're talking like four or five
- 4:50six songs tops. What's what made this project? Like, hey, these
- 4:55two deserve to kind of live together and in their own space. Mean,
- 4:58we actually had a lot of feedback from fans when we cut this music.
- 5:00So we cut a handful of songs and had a fan event last year and
- 5:04started just kind of hearing kind of like our tour when we would take request
- 5:06every night, got fans to actually write down on a little card which ones
- 5:11they loved. At a listening party, we had these two really kind of
- 5:14stood out, love You Back, and then another one called a love song.
- 5:17But we're all, I mean, we're all circling the runway trying to
- 5:19figure out how we put out music. You know, the industry continues to
- 5:24shift. We still love albums, but also want to be able to put
- 5:27out music when we're fired up about it too, and felt that way,
- 5:30especially about love You Back after hearing from the fans. Song also be a
- 5:33part of a project that we end up you know, putting out here recently
- 5:38or here soon. You know. For us right now, we're just like,
- 5:41let's let the music dictate where we go. And so, you know,
- 5:44love You Back felt like such a great, you know, kind of
- 5:46kick off to some new music. And you know, who knows throughout this
- 5:49process this year we may develop a concept album and all of a sudden those
- 5:54songs will fit on there. So but I think having that freedom of not
- 5:57boxing ourselves in anything is kind of a little bit of that kind of cool
- 6:00uncertainty that I'm kind of thriving off of lately, where I kind of embrace
- 6:05it and that's what makes life fun. Is like, I don't know where
- 6:10this is going to go, but it's God's going to lead it somewhere that
- 6:13it's supposed to go. Is it crazy to think of where music and your
- 6:16careers have gone that Literally, you could walk out of here and Dave thinks
- 6:21of a song idea, everybody gets together after dinner later tonight, super passionate.
- 6:27Hey, let's write this you recorded tomorrow and people could be listening to
- 6:30it Friday, like music never existed like that before. Yeah. Yeah,
- 6:32Yeah, we've seen a lot of change for sure. I mean not only
- 6:38just as music lovers growing up, but then once we got into the business
- 6:42ourselves. I mean, it is so immediate now, which there's such an
- 6:46excitement to that. And it also, you know, if you're not kind
- 6:51of keeping a handle on yourself, can feel like a whole lot of pressure,
- 6:55you know, and a whole lot of pressure to just create, create,
- 6:58create and produce so much and just making sure that that you know,
- 7:02it's led by the art, it's led by the inspiration creatively to put it
- 7:08out into the world. I was going to ask that because similar to the
- 7:11way music is released, social media kind of runs the world too. And
- 7:15I mean, especially what we do. You could see, oh, this
- 7:15person did this and this person did this. I have anxiety because I haven't
- 7:19done any you know what I mean. Does that exist in the music creation
- 7:23now that it's so as quick too, I mean it can be, you
- 7:26know, for us right now, it's definitely focused on quality more than quantity.
- 7:29But you know, we also are who we are, and it's like,
- 7:32you know, I think we started off and felt like we were kind
- 7:36of ahead of the curve, taking video cameras around and posting them up on
- 7:40Facebook, and then it kind of moved into this Instagram world. Well then
- 7:43we got four you could video on your phone, and then we had you
- 7:45know, family, and it was there was definitely that pressure of like,
- 7:47I can't keep up with this, and you know what, sometimes I'm not
- 7:50going to try. And you know, I think to being in a group
- 7:54and being around for you know, close to seventeen years, we've seen so
- 7:58many trends come and go and go, and I feel like, you know,
- 8:03the one thing I've learned is you can't chase it. The minute you
- 8:05start chasing a trend, you know, where everybody's like, all right,
- 8:07now, Morgan's hot, and then you start getting a bunch of people trying
- 8:11to silent Morgan. It's like, then it's going to be the next person.
- 8:13And you know, and I feel like the thing that you just have
- 8:18to remain as an artist in your heart is the sound that you've created.
- 8:24And I think to embrace a little change and push yourself, but stay stay
- 8:28true to that core of what you really love. You know, if it
- 8:31doesn't excite you, it's not going to excite the audience. This is where
- 8:35I quote Bluie's mom, it's a lot of Bluey with my children. Run
- 8:39your own Race. Hey, that's great, Actually it is, it is,
- 8:43and that is truly. I mean it sounds silly, but that show
- 8:46has got a lot of wisdom. But that's it. It's like going to
- 8:50got a nice, nice going to run our own race. It's a good
- 8:52song title, good song title, because it is. It's coming out Friday,
- 9:00No, it is, it's it's interesting and every you know, everybody
- 9:03has their own way of discovering new music and celebrating the artists they love and
- 9:09all that. But for me personally, every now and then, I like,
- 9:11I like when you know, for example, John Mayer goes away and
- 9:16then I've had enough space from the last John Mayer project or the last John
- 9:18Mayor show that I watched, and to go, huh, I wonder what
- 9:24he's doing and then go search. It's like, there's there's beauty in missing
- 9:28something and then kind of longing for it. I feel I feel like they're
- 9:33the artists that do that really well. I just I think it's really wise.
- 9:39I think they're they're obviously really hopefully taking care of themselves in the way
- 9:43that they create art in the process, and I think that that shows in
- 9:48the beauty of what they make. Going back to you, guys, are
- 9:52to the point in your career and this is definitely a compliment. If you
- 9:56go to a Lady A show, you end up going, oh my god,
- 10:00I forgot about this, right though, oh my god moments exist in
- 10:03the Lady A show because you have so many different hits. People are like,
- 10:05I can't wait to hear this, this, this, and then halfway
- 10:07through the show, they reach over and hit their friend like they knew this
- 10:11one. I forgot going through those songs and the moments and the tours and
- 10:16we were Tay and I were working in Vegas during your residency. Goes through
- 10:22those moments and a feature you have a different answer. That's fine too.
- 10:26You look back, there's still plenty of lady a story to be told.
- 10:30But you look back today to day one, what are you like, Holy
- 10:35hell, that actually happened. Gosh. I feel like there's been several of
- 10:39those moments, but I mean the things that jump out to me is like,
- 10:46you know, getting asked to become a member of the Grand Ole Opry.
- 10:50Like I'll never forget that moment when we stood on stage and saying with
- 10:54Chris Christopherson at a stand up to cancer telethon, like you know, and
- 10:58got to sing help me make it through the night with him. Like things
- 11:01like moments like that that just jump out. And that was one in particular
- 11:05that I just really remember this morning. It was like, oh, they
- 11:09did that, you know, And it's those things, it's the it's yeah,
- 11:15those are those for me traveling around the world. I mean I never
- 11:18would have thought, you know, our music would take us to Australia,
- 11:22you know, Europe. You know, we've looked at even going to other
- 11:24places too. I mean it's just wild to think how far your music can
- 11:28reach, you know, and that how special that is. So yeah,
- 11:31it's pretty pretty surreal when you put when you kind of walk through the last
- 11:35you know, sixteen seventeen years of what we've been able to do. So
- 11:37we feel super lucky and blessed to be here. When it comes to the
- 11:41music that we are looking forward to. Obviously you're creating, you're probably writing,
- 11:48maybe not recording yet, right, just getting back both a little bit
- 11:50both. Do you know what you want to do next? Not that we
- 11:54won't ask dates or names, but do you have a plan? Are you
- 11:56like, let's record and see what happens. Yeah, I think that's where
- 11:58we are. I mean we've got a handful of dates this year. You
- 12:01know, we got off obviously a pretty busy year last year with a request
- 12:05line tour, and I think want to give our space to create, give
- 12:07ourselves space to create, and not force it, you know. I mean
- 12:11if I look back some some moments in our career, I wish maybe we
- 12:13had had an extra a month or two to to you know, spend a
- 12:16little bit more time creatively on stuff, even if nothing came from it,
- 12:20just a mental break, you know. And so to me, I think
- 12:24we're just gonna we don't want to look back and be like, gosh,
- 12:26you know, you just wanted these moments to kind of because I don't think
- 12:31I'll ever be happy if I didn't have have something to look forward to,
- 12:37like something with the band and being up back up on that stage. And
- 12:41I don't want it to get to a point where we run ourselves so ragged
- 12:43that then you kind of you do it and it's gone. It's like I
- 12:46would. I love where we're at now, where it seems like we're building
- 12:50this kind of runway to where we can kind of dip in and out and
- 12:54be able to actually give ourselves some long space, like Hillary said, for
- 12:56people to miss us a little bit, for us to like find out where
- 13:01we want to go with this. And I think there really is something nice
- 13:03about this complete, beautiful uncertainty that I'm not sure where it's going to head
- 13:11musically or where it's going to go, but I know I know it's going
- 13:13to reveal itself, and there's not a ton of pressure because it's like we've
- 13:18already had this body of work, like you said that we can always rely
- 13:22on it's always going to be there. But I do think the artist in
- 13:24us wants to keep creating and pushing ourselves. So it's like it's kind of
- 13:28a beautiful spot of like, you know, we could sit back and kind
- 13:31of just keep torn on the same music forever, but there's still a fire
- 13:35in our ability that wants to see where we're going to go. And some
- 13:37of my favorite artists in their careers have had so many different iterations. I
- 13:41mean when you look at Willie Nelson, I mean, you know the artist
- 13:46he was when he started the songwriter, to then the outlaw, to then
- 13:50you know this icon and it's like, you know, there was a lot
- 13:54of ups and downs and waves, and just I feel like you as long
- 13:56as you stay authentic to it, that you can ride those waves and kind
- 14:01of just enjoy the process. Anybody who is a lady, a fan,
- 14:05even if like a little right, they see that you guys are up here,
- 14:09always busy, always working on something, whether it's in the studio or
- 14:15at what point in your career. Because everybody starts burning the candle at both
- 14:20ends. At what point were you guys like mental because mental health and especially
- 14:24in country music in general, I feel like over the past couple of years,
- 14:28it's like, hey, let's take care of each other and ourselves.
- 14:33It's come to the forefront more than ever. So at what until you started,
- 14:37You had your first child and we all kind of all started. Yeah,
- 14:39I was actually I was going to say, I feel like we really
- 14:43started prioritizing our own individual health and the health of the band as a whole.
- 14:48Probably in like seventeen eighteen was really when it became a huge which thankfully,
- 14:56looking back, I don't have this forever. I had this just ha,
- 15:00this epiphany. It's like that we started laying that foundation of communication and
- 15:05being open and honest with each other pre pandemic, which I'm very very grateful
- 15:09for looking back, because that was hard on all, you know, in
- 15:13so many ways. So yeah, I would say seventeen eighteen, twenty seventeen
- 15:20eighteen, and we had gone and sat and had kind of a mediator to
- 15:24help us work through some things before that. That was so healthy and good.
- 15:28But the consistency that we've maintained was about then. I mean you have
- 15:33to be intentional about it. I mean, you know, I feel lucky
- 15:35that we can say no to things right, and so we can. I
- 15:39think we can pace out the sort of schedule that fits for all of us.
- 15:43You know. I think one of my favorite things is when we get
- 15:45to sit down and kind of map out the year right, and it's like,
- 15:48hey, we got this great opportunity here, and let's do this,
- 15:50let's do this. But it's like, hey, my daughter's in a play
- 15:54on May fourth, and I'm here for it, so that days off.
- 15:56You know, we really try to map out great windows our family. So
- 16:00yeah, it does. I think we want it to look like we've always
- 16:03got you know, the new music and new stuff happening, But we definitely
- 16:06carve out personal things that are super important to the three of us, and
- 16:10that's a priority, and we have to sit and talk about it, be
- 16:11intentional about it, and you know, I'm thankful we can do that now.
- 16:15Yes, it's funny you bring up May fourth if your daughter does have
- 16:17a play in going to make it because you're busy. I know, as
- 16:22soon as he said, I'm like ye to record that May fourth. You
- 16:29guys are a part of you talk about, you know, still saying yes
- 16:33to things, but like also kind of managing those yeses. And it's not
- 16:37which sounds like when you say it that way, like selfish, like oh,
- 16:40because you're too cool. No, it's like we have to be human
- 16:42too, right. So with that part of the things y'all have said yes
- 16:48to in twenty twenty four is our iHeart Country Festival, which is has become
- 16:52I mean, we're year ten eleven unbelievable and it's cool to see because yes,
- 16:59there's festival that last you know, three four days at a time,
- 17:03but like this is one night, it's one stage. This year it's Lady
- 17:07A, It's Jason Eldan, it's Jellyroll, Old Dominion. We're going to
- 17:11actually make it sound like Asley McBride, Riley Green Walker, Hayes, I'm
- 17:17forgetting somebody, did I say, Brothers Osborne. I mean it's unbelievable when
- 17:22it comes to an event like that where you you're not just doing a show,
- 17:26you can see the show or maybe even talk backstage and visit with people.
- 17:32How important is that for you? Maybe not mental health wise, but
- 17:34like looking forward to shows because otherwise every city, every show, it's not
- 17:40washer it's repeat, but close. Right. When it comes to a show
- 17:42like this, why does it stand out? And what does it mean for
- 17:45you to be a part of gosh? I mean, just the lineup alone,
- 17:48to be in their company, in the company of all those artists you
- 17:52just listed, is extremely humbling and exciting and such a great kind of I
- 17:56think, spread of what our genre is and what it's doing. And I
- 18:02also just love the opportunity to catch up with a lot of these artists.
- 18:04I mean, the only other times we really get to do that are at
- 18:07award shows and when everybody's running around, you know, crazy, and especially
- 18:11if you're a female, you're in glam for hours, and you know,
- 18:15it's just a longer glam time. So just to be able to connect and
- 18:18see how everybody's doing, I mean, I think that because we do,
- 18:22we have such mutual respect for one another and really our friends with so many
- 18:27of the artists in our genre. So that's what I look forward to,
- 18:32the connection time, for sure, And like I mean, and you want
- 18:33to bring it, you know, I mean, all those artists are in
- 18:37that room and you're like, you know, so, I mean, for
- 18:38me already thinking about it, I'm like I want to bring a really high
- 18:41energy show to that moment, you know, and you know, it just
- 18:45gets exciting to be like, like like Hillary said, to still be you
- 18:51know, a band that's been around for sixty seventeen years and still be you
- 18:55know, a part of what's new, stuff happening, what's been around for
- 18:59a while. And to feel like you know, you're you're, you're in
- 19:03this, You're in this family with so many different styles. And I think
- 19:07that's why I love the genre so much, is so many different styles are
- 19:11represented, uh in that one night. And to be in front of die
- 19:14hard country pants because if they're coming to the iHeart they're die hard country pants.
- 19:18You know, when it comes to a show like that versus a regular
- 19:21tour stop, how do you put together And obviously you're not talking about a
- 19:23set list for a show like that may fourth I'm already thinking about it.
- 19:29But but when but when you think, obviously it's not a full lady a
- 19:33show, you know, ninety plus minutes. Uh so you gotta you gotta
- 19:37almost like squeeze the orange a little tighter on a show like that. Uh
- 19:42So, how do you build what's a set list like for that versus a
- 19:45normal night, Charles, Really it's going to be you know, hit them
- 19:52hard. But then like that way when you do get you know, a
- 19:56moment for a special song or a new song, you know it means some
- 20:00thing and then you know, but I love it. I mean, I
- 20:03think that's my favorite is honestly when it's like you have to create what's gonna
- 20:07what's gonna hit the most in this environment, and it and it all,
- 20:11it really is dictated by the crowd. And if they're up, they've been
- 20:15staying around and they you know, we just got done and we're following you
- 20:18know, someone like Al Dean or whatever it might be, or whoever.
- 20:23You know, you better keep them on their feet. You know, you
- 20:26don't want to be the one to kind of you don't want to be the
- 20:27bathroom. Yeah, you don't want to be the one to suck the life
- 20:30out of the room. So it's fun. I mean, that's my favorite
- 20:33thing to do, is to is to finally be a group that has a
- 20:37collection of songs where we can pick and choose which ones are gonna fit the
- 20:42best in what environment. I'm gonna corner you and answer as good as you
- 20:47can, because this is gonna get clipped and shared on social media. Let's
- 20:49say I handed you a piece of paper. I'm not asking for the whole
- 20:52thing. I saw your eyes gonna go hang on. Uh, if if
- 20:56you had to tell me right now, what show you're going to open?
- 20:59Lady A set at the Eye Country Festival with on how many songs? Yeah,
- 21:04honestly probably you look good. Kick it out really hard with the horns
- 21:08or a bartender. You know, I think you come out swinging. You
- 21:12know, it's something fun. I mean on the nights in there is a
- 21:15good option too, and then you know, you kind of ease and I
- 21:19tell you as many times that we've tried not to finish, not to end
- 21:22the show on the You Now, it's like you now is the This is
- 21:26always kind of the last one. It's funny with the song like that.
- 21:29Usually it's like tempo, bam, the confetti hits, the lights turn on,
- 21:32and everyone goes home. But like, there's something about that song that
- 21:34one. It doesn't matter, it doesn't matter wherever you are. I mean,
- 21:37the confetti is weird, but it works, but it's fun. Last
- 21:42thing I want to ask you, guys, is we wrap things up?
- 21:45Uh? You are constantly creating, whether it's individuals or you get together for
- 21:49a project. When it comes to the current single, why did that make
- 21:52sense for right now? Yeah? Well, this song, we just we
- 21:56loved it so much. I mean, it was a song that sent to
- 22:00Charles. You know, we write, like Charles said earlier, seventy five
- 22:03percent of our own music, you know. But we have learned over the
- 22:07years, and I think pretty early on, like if the outside song that
- 22:11we get sent is so strong that we wish we would have written it,
- 22:15we need to put our ego down and cut it in. And so there
- 22:18have been you know, American Honey is an example of that. What if
- 22:22I Never get over You as an example of that, and this song is
- 22:23also an example of that, and we just I love the lyric. I
- 22:27think, you know, anytime I can close my eyes and listen to a
- 22:30song and see a movie play, I'm just I'm so sucked in. And
- 22:34I also just think that it's just an interesting way to talk about heartbreak and
- 22:41to talk about the memory of someone you love. And it wasn't originally a
- 22:47duet when we were sent the song, and so then Charles, you can
- 22:49take it from here you'r A and R and no. I mean I think
- 22:52for me, we're always trying to think of, you know, how to
- 22:56get both perspectives on that, and it just again it just felt like it
- 23:00felt like a sound from us that we wanted to put out that we hadn't
- 23:03done in a while, you know, because if you look at kind of
- 23:03some of our last few big number ones, you know, you got like
- 23:07you look Good, you got Champagne Night, you know you Bartender thrown in
- 23:11there, you know. So I think I think it's nice to remind people,
- 23:15you know that that we're also the band that does you know, American
- 23:18Honey, you know, need You Now, and like those kind of songs,
- 23:22and this one definitely had it just felt right. I mean, I
- 23:25think sometimes I try not to overthink it as much anymore. Anytime we tried
- 23:30to force things, it almost seems like it never works. And this one
- 23:33just really showed itself as a special off the project. You know, whether
- 23:37it was a tempo, mid tempo or a ballot, it's like, let's
- 23:41just put out what really speaks to us, and this one really spoke to
- 23:44us. That's awesome. I appreciate it, guys. Next for the time,
- 23:45thank you,
