- 0:00[SPEAKER_00]: Hey friend, welcome back to Bible Tract Echoes.
- 0:02[SPEAKER_00]: I'm Mike McCurrier host.
- 0:03[SPEAKER_00]: Thank you so much for joining me once again today We are again in song one night and I'm asking the question today.
- 0:11[SPEAKER_00]: Are you refreshed or Are you ruthless root not ruthless, but rootless Are you blown about with every wind of doctrine?
- 0:26[SPEAKER_00]: We're in Psalm 1 and we're really looking at verses 4, 5 and 6 here Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
- 0:33[SPEAKER_00]: We're concluding this week a two-week series in Psalm 1.
- 0:39[SPEAKER_00]: My prayer is that it's a blessing to hear me talk about the importance of and the dangers of controlling our screen usage, our phone usage.
- 0:50[SPEAKER_00]: It's something that absolutely
- 0:51[SPEAKER_00]: it's mutilating a lot of Christian spirituality.
- 0:55[SPEAKER_00]: So we need to be careful of this thing.
- 0:57[SPEAKER_00]: You're also going to hear me in just a moment refer to some interns.
- 1:01[SPEAKER_00]: We recently had with us what a wonderful group of young people these guys are and they had such a great attitude throughout our intern project.
- 1:09[SPEAKER_00]: We'll talk about that maybe more.
- 1:11[SPEAKER_00]: in the future, but I'm going to ask you to tune your hearts, your minds, to what the Lord has for us today.
- 1:16[SPEAKER_00]: Are you refreshed or rootless?
- 1:19[SPEAKER_00]: This message I preached on my home church not long ago, I pray it's a blessing to you.
- 1:23[SPEAKER_00]: Listen now.
- 1:24[SPEAKER_00]: Blessed is the man, verses verse 1 of chapter 1, blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the young godly, nor standeth in the way of sinners.
- 1:35[SPEAKER_00]: Nor sit-it in the seat of the scornful.
- 1:37[SPEAKER_00]: This is a happy, a joyful, a fulfilled man.
- 1:41[SPEAKER_00]: We spoke a few weeks ago about Jesus talking about the Beatitudes of Blessed are the, and then we see a progression.
- 1:49[SPEAKER_00]: He doesn't walk in the council of the Young God.
- 1:52[SPEAKER_00]: He doesn't stand in the way of sinners.
- 1:55[SPEAKER_00]: Nor does he sit in the seat of the scornful.
- 1:57[SPEAKER_00]: The Blessed man is known by what he does not do.
- 2:03[SPEAKER_00]: And as we look at this thought, I asked a question that I don't know if I've asked these interns yet sometime over the next six weeks, I probably will ask them, but I probably know the answer from most of these young men, who are your counselors?
- 2:18[SPEAKER_00]: Who are people that invest in you?
- 2:19[SPEAKER_00]: Who do you go to when you have a question?
- 2:22[SPEAKER_00]: I asked the same question to you.
- 2:23[SPEAKER_00]: If you have a question, biblical or otherwise,
- 2:27[SPEAKER_00]: Who do you go to?
- 2:29[SPEAKER_00]: Pastor, are you say this many years ago from behind this pulpit, probably underneath that tent?
- 2:34[SPEAKER_00]: Talking about young people going to their peers for council, shared ignorance.
- 2:40[SPEAKER_00]: But oftentimes, we find ourselves, when, I'll speak for myself, when we are most bereft, when we are most enemic, spiritually speaking, is when we find the worst counselors.
- 2:53[SPEAKER_00]: We go to those that are sinners.
- 2:55[SPEAKER_00]: We go to the scornful.
- 2:57[SPEAKER_00]: We talked about how a device like this.
- 3:01[SPEAKER_00]: This is not the drug, this is just the needle.
- 3:05[SPEAKER_00]: This is just a way the the the scorn of this world gets introduced to us.
- 3:13[SPEAKER_00]: think about Tiktok and TV and all the rest, very likely if those are your counselors, then you're walking in the wrong counselor, counsel.
- 3:25[SPEAKER_00]: If you're constantly feeding from scornful sources, you're sitting in the wrong seat.
- 3:29[SPEAKER_00]: And we looked at, we're not going to re-examine him.
- 3:32[SPEAKER_00]: Just by way of review, we looked at Daniel as our example.
- 3:36[SPEAKER_00]: He purposeed in his heart.
- 3:37[SPEAKER_00]: He was not going to feed himself on the king's meat and drink the king's wine.
- 3:41[SPEAKER_00]: And then we'll look at verse number two.
- 3:43[SPEAKER_00]: But his delight.
- 3:45[SPEAKER_00]: So a blessed man is known by what he does not do.
- 3:48[SPEAKER_00]: And the blessed man is known by what he delights in.
- 3:51[SPEAKER_00]: But his delight is in the law of the Lord.
- 3:54[SPEAKER_00]: And in his law, Dothi meditate day and night, not just duty, but craving.
- 4:03[SPEAKER_00]: physical appetites, change with healthy habits oftentimes.
- 4:08[SPEAKER_00]: I found that that self-appetuating cycle, a couple of these guys, they brought weights with them.
- 4:15[SPEAKER_00]: Now, you just want to lay aside every week.
- 4:16[SPEAKER_00]: So, know what you guys are doing.
- 4:17[SPEAKER_00]: I'm trying to be more biblical and laying aside, you know, these guys brought some workout equipment with them and they want to work out a little bit and
- 4:24[SPEAKER_00]: of the RV, they were doing some push-ups and things and trying to stay and shape, but it's amazing how those apples that we got at Sam's Club on our way out of town, how quickly those disappeared.
- 4:36[SPEAKER_00]: There are a lot of other less healthy options, but these guys, if you can believe it, they're making good decisions.
- 4:44[SPEAKER_00]: At 15 to 21 years old.
- 4:45[SPEAKER_00]: They're better decisions than I was probably making at that age.
- 4:49[SPEAKER_00]: Well, they vacuumed up those apples.
- 4:51[SPEAKER_00]: But oftentimes, I've found when you take the time to maybe get up and do a little jog in the morning or where you work at a little bit.
- 4:57[SPEAKER_00]: It's amazing how later on the day you think, man, I really shouldn't have that third piece of cake.
- 5:04[SPEAKER_00]: But our habits, but his delight is in the law of the Lord.
- 5:09[SPEAKER_00]: Most Christians treat their Bible like a meal replacement shake.
- 5:17[SPEAKER_00]: We think, well, I'm going to eat junk food all day long, but as long as I have one protein shake, as long as I read a chapter of the Bible, it's going to counteract everything.
- 5:25[SPEAKER_00]: And I had said it in, I think, but the Tim reminded me, I don't even know that I had said it, but he reminded me that didn't.
- 5:31[SPEAKER_00]: He said that I said, you can't outrun a bad diet.
- 5:36[SPEAKER_00]: You know how long it takes?
- 5:37[SPEAKER_00]: You've ever done those calorie counter things or you're on the treadmill at the gym and you're watching those calories.
- 5:42[SPEAKER_00]: They tick up so slowly.
- 5:48[SPEAKER_00]: You can be there for 45 minutes.
- 5:49[SPEAKER_00]: You're like, I'm not gonna look, I'm not gonna look and you look down 103.
- 5:52[SPEAKER_00]: That's not the number I was looking for.
- 5:55[SPEAKER_00]: And you eat one donut and there's 300, 75 calories right there.
- 5:59[SPEAKER_00]: But I'll tell ya, just like the world we were on the Indian Reservation, I didn't hear anyone use this illustration about the Indian Chief and which dog he fed.
- 6:07[SPEAKER_00]: I was a little disappointed.
- 6:09[SPEAKER_00]: But you've heard that illustration, you have the white dog, you have the black dog, the Indian Chiefs asked, which one wins?
- 6:16[SPEAKER_00]: Well, the one that I feed.
- 6:18[SPEAKER_00]: It's the same for a flesh, but his delight is in the law of Lord and we talked about Ezra.
- 6:23[SPEAKER_00]: and how he prepared his heart to seek and to do the law of the Lord.
- 6:27[SPEAKER_00]: But then we looked at verse three, we see what he does not do the best man, what he delights in, and what he develops into, and he shall be like verse three, and he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season, his leaf also shall not wither, and whatsoever he do with shall prosper.
- 6:49[SPEAKER_00]: Don't you want to be one of those people that everything you touch just seems to turn to gold?
- 6:55[SPEAKER_00]: I've known people, they can seem to do no wrong, they can fall into a pile of manure that come out and smell like a rose, right?
- 7:02[SPEAKER_00]: You've met those type of people, like how do they, they're the type of people that get upgrades on their way, you know, on long flights.
- 7:10[SPEAKER_00]: I think you've got a six-stead, and of course, you've got a six-stead, some of you may know
- 7:14[SPEAKER_00]: deal with some of us.
- 7:15[SPEAKER_00]: All timers and things like that and praying for him, but both of six to have was one of those guys.
- 7:20[SPEAKER_00]: that he just seemed to get upgrades all the time.
- 7:22[SPEAKER_00]: He tell me about him as if I wanted to hear about how blessed he was, right?
- 7:27[SPEAKER_00]: It probably had nothing to do with the fact that he came with little goody bags with candy and all that time.
- 7:33[SPEAKER_00]: I had nothing to do with the fourth thought that he put into these long trips.
- 7:38[SPEAKER_00]: Knowing me, I'm going to get an upgrade on like a 45 minute hopped and miniapolis or something like that.
- 7:42[SPEAKER_00]: When I needed on the 15-hour flight to Australia, but the blessed man.
- 7:48[SPEAKER_00]: whatsoever you do as she'll prosper.
- 7:51[SPEAKER_00]: Her past actually passed her clone.
- 7:53[SPEAKER_00]: pastor that runs the camp, common ground baptism, butner of Pennsylvania.
- 7:57[SPEAKER_00]: And he has this saying, I'll try not to butcher it too bad.
- 8:00[SPEAKER_00]: He said he has found, now he's been a youth pastor, pastor, what are he's been a youth pastor for like two decades.
- 8:06[SPEAKER_00]: He put him some time there.
- 8:08[SPEAKER_00]: And now he's pastor for the last 15 years.
- 8:09[SPEAKER_00]: He's about 35 years in ministry.
- 8:11[SPEAKER_00]: So he's in a lot of generations of teens.
- 8:13[SPEAKER_00]: He's in a lot of generations of families.
- 8:15[SPEAKER_00]: He's now getting to pastor so many of the young people that were in his team group.
- 8:19[SPEAKER_00]: And he said he has found, he's known Christians.
- 8:23[SPEAKER_00]: That if there are 100 doors ahead of them, 100 doors to choose from, and there are 99 good doors and one terrible choice.
- 8:37[SPEAKER_00]: They will find the one door that leads to destruction every time.
- 8:43[SPEAKER_00]: But he said he's also known some people that could have 99 terrible doors in front of them.
- 8:48[SPEAKER_00]: all bad choices.
- 8:49[SPEAKER_00]: And there's one just, just got shot.
- 8:52[SPEAKER_00]: There's one just through the eye of the needle, one opportunity.
- 8:57[SPEAKER_00]: And so he's no Christians that they would choose because they're in two with God.
- 9:01[SPEAKER_00]: Blessed is the man whatsoever he do with shall prosper.
- 9:04[SPEAKER_00]: They'll pick that one door.
- 9:07[SPEAKER_00]: So the question is which do you want to be?
- 9:09[SPEAKER_00]: Well, if a blessed man is known by what he does not do,
- 9:14[SPEAKER_00]: If he's known by what he delights in, if he's known by what he develops into, let's look at this evening, we're going to finish Psalm 1, some dangers to be aware of.
- 9:25[SPEAKER_00]: Psalm 1, verse number 4 through 6, I'll read aloud you listen, Psalm 1, 4, 4, 5 and 6.
- 9:42[SPEAKER_00]: Therefore, the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.
- 9:50[SPEAKER_00]: For the Lord, knoweth the way of the righteous, but the way of the ungodly shall perish.
- 9:56[SPEAKER_00]: The ungodly are not so.
- 9:59[SPEAKER_00]: Are not so.
- 10:00[SPEAKER_00]: What?
- 10:00[SPEAKER_00]: They're not like verse 3.
- 10:05[SPEAKER_00]: Verse 3, he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water.
- 10:12[SPEAKER_00]: a fresh, a refreshed Christian, but what do we see in a verse four?
- 10:17[SPEAKER_00]: We see a rootless person, a rootless person.
- 10:23[SPEAKER_00]: They're not like the tree planted and rooted by rivers and water.
- 10:25[SPEAKER_00]: They are chaff.
- 10:27[SPEAKER_00]: You know what chaff is?
- 10:28[SPEAKER_00]: Chaff is just a byproduct.
- 10:32[SPEAKER_00]: of the process of getting that wheat.
- 10:34[SPEAKER_00]: It's not a seed.
- 10:35[SPEAKER_00]: You think, oh, chaff, it still has, no, no.
- 10:37[SPEAKER_00]: The chaff isn't a seed.
- 10:39[SPEAKER_00]: It's just a by-product that is completely and totally useless.
- 10:43[SPEAKER_00]: They actually throw the wheat up in the ground.
- 10:45[SPEAKER_00]: They throw the grain up in the air, so that the chaff can be purposely blown away.
- 10:52[SPEAKER_00]: And that's what the Bible describes the ungodly as.
- 10:56[SPEAKER_00]: They have no roots.
- 10:58[SPEAKER_00]: Trees survive storms because of deep roots.
- 11:03[SPEAKER_00]: Chaff blows with the breeze, whichever way the world goes, they go.
- 11:10[SPEAKER_00]: Ephesians 414, the Bible talks about being tossed to and fro, carried about with every wind of doctrine, no stability, no foundation, nothing to anchor them in trials.
- 11:21[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know about you, but I've been that way before.
- 11:25[SPEAKER_00]: Something's smack-ship-side ahead, and you've like, well, wait, wait, wait, get my barrier.
- 11:29[SPEAKER_00]: See, we are not judged in our Christianity by the good days.
- 11:36[SPEAKER_00]: It's when the bad days come that the true colors show.
- 11:39[SPEAKER_00]: It's when you scratch the paint and you see what's underneath that really counts.
- 11:45[SPEAKER_00]: It's those stressful days when you really just want to lash back and snap back if somebody.
- 11:56[SPEAKER_00]: How rooted are we?
- 11:59[SPEAKER_00]: Would we, the Bible can see us ungodly?
- 12:01[SPEAKER_00]: Or would we be a righteous, blessed man?
- 12:06[SPEAKER_00]: Now, as we conclude today's broadcast, I've got to ask, are you refreshed or are you goodness?
- 12:15[SPEAKER_00]: Psalm 1, 4, the ungodly are not so or not.
- 12:18[SPEAKER_00]: So what, they're not grounded.
- 12:21[SPEAKER_00]: They don't have direct abilities.
- 12:23[SPEAKER_00]: They're not like a tree planted by the rivers of water.
- 12:25[SPEAKER_00]: No, no.
- 12:26[SPEAKER_00]: But I like the chaff, which the wind, the drive-eth away.
- 12:31[SPEAKER_00]: Do you feel like you get just blowing around, you get battered?
- 12:35[SPEAKER_00]: You're ever seen a flag just whipping in the wind?
- 12:39[SPEAKER_00]: See what happens to the end of that flag?
- 12:42[SPEAKER_00]: It starts to get a little frasal, doesn't it?
- 12:44[SPEAKER_00]: The red start to come out.
- 12:45[SPEAKER_00]: It'll last long when the wind's blowing that hard, do that.
- 12:49[SPEAKER_00]: one day, is that where you are today?
- 12:54[SPEAKER_00]: I pray you are refreshed.
- 12:57[SPEAKER_00]: We're going to continue the thought tomorrow we're going to ask this question, have you taken a step back?
- 13:03[SPEAKER_00]: I know I have, well let's take two steps forward tomorrow on Bible Trek.
- 13:08[SPEAKER_00]: My prayer as always is that you have a great day for God's glory.
- 13:13[SPEAKER_00]: Well, plan on talking you soon.
