- 0:40Speaker 1: meat Eater Podcast. Where we're you wound called broadcasting. We're
- 0:45Speaker 1: recording in a airplane hair plane hanger, yeah, next to
- 0:50Speaker 1: a two o six. If you, guys, if this was
- 0:53Speaker 1: a better show, we'd let you look that way. I
- 0:57Speaker 1: argued in setting up that that is is way more
- 1:02Speaker 1: interesting than over here. It's busy. Yeah, well if you could.
- 1:07Speaker 1: If you if they had done it the way I thought,
- 1:11Speaker 1: and you're watching on on you're watching the video on YouTube,
- 1:14Speaker 1: you'd be looking at a big old welding project where
- 1:16Speaker 1: there's like a frame of a cub getting all welded together,
- 1:21Speaker 1: and it's held up in this kind of jig apparatus
- 1:24Speaker 1: to support the whole thing, and there's all kinds of
- 1:27Speaker 1: tools laying around and just looks awesome. But instead you
- 1:34Speaker 1: got just a regular old plane.
- 1:37Speaker 2: So pretty cool, pretty cool plane.
- 1:39Speaker 1: That's a good looking plane. It's good. There's nothing wrong
- 1:40Speaker 1: with that plane. It was telling you it's better over
- 1:42Speaker 1: that way.
- 1:43Speaker 3: Coolest part about that plane that people can't see is
- 1:45Speaker 3: it says forestry on the wing.
- 1:47Speaker 1: Okay, uh? Joining it by av so cool? Joining it
- 1:52Speaker 1: by Avanthalker, who's on the show for the second time. Yeah,
- 1:55Speaker 1: do you remember what do we call the last time
- 1:57Speaker 1: you came on?
- 1:58Speaker 2: What was the name of it? Yeah, I can't remember.
- 2:01Speaker 1: You did a good job on that one.
- 2:02Speaker 2: Oh thanks.
- 2:06Speaker 1: I keep wanting to sing my new song about Chili,
- 2:08Speaker 1: just to show people that it's not like that big
- 2:10Speaker 1: of a deal. What's not that big of a deal, right,
- 2:13Speaker 1: it's just writing songs. Whatever. Listen to this one. Chili's
- 2:18Speaker 1: rifle man, gonna make his final stand. See how far
- 2:22Speaker 1: I got on that.
- 2:23Speaker 4: It sounded like he almost forgot the second line.
- 2:26Speaker 1: The second line was I just repeat the first line.
- 2:29Speaker 1: It was Chili's a rifle man. Chili's a rifle man, Oh,
- 2:33Speaker 1: rifle in his hand, gonna make his final stand. So
- 2:36Speaker 1: now you're hooked dude, because you're hooked, because you're like,
- 2:41Speaker 1: tell me more about the final stand, but.
- 2:43Speaker 5: Knowing you probably won't, you probably won't write anything more
- 2:46Speaker 5: to it, I'd say.
- 2:47Speaker 1: I'd say it's more of like a marching or hiking cadence. Well,
- 2:53Speaker 1: we're hiking, fixing the hike when I'm.
- 2:56Speaker 3: Talking about seven days to come off the bats.
- 3:00Speaker 2: All, it takes time.
- 3:02Speaker 1: Yeah, so my song, my song is faltering, and uh,
- 3:07Speaker 1: that's that what I want to do. Though. So we're
- 3:09Speaker 1: coming from we're in this here aircraft hangar, and we're
- 3:12Speaker 1: coming from uh spending four or five days, six six nights,
- 3:20Speaker 1: at least six nights six nights doing like a little
- 3:25Speaker 1: backpack based fly in airplane hunt. And when we got
- 3:30Speaker 1: into it, we we had this argument about I was
- 3:32Speaker 1: I was taking like I was playing Devil's advocate on
- 3:34Speaker 1: this argument where the guys here were talking about looking
- 3:41Speaker 1: at packing lists. Okay, someone looking at packing lists, and
- 3:45Speaker 1: I was just, for no reason at all, assuming the
- 3:50Speaker 1: position of someone who didn't think that was constructive that
- 3:56Speaker 1: you just felt like arguing, Yeah, I feel like arguing nothing.
- 4:00Speaker 1: There's nothing like big to argue about. Rick can't said
- 4:04Speaker 1: anything like totally stupid.
- 4:06Speaker 4: Did you bring your iyem ask?
- 4:07Speaker 3: That's the question.
- 4:08Speaker 4: Did you bring your iyem ask?
- 4:10Speaker 1: No? No, So so I think what I was saying
- 4:12Speaker 1: was this. I was saying, it's very Subjective's subject highly subjective,
- 4:16Speaker 1: because there's like things that work for people and things
- 4:18Speaker 1: that don't work for people. And I was saying, how
- 4:20Speaker 1: I could go online and trick you guys and make
- 4:22Speaker 1: a packing list for something that's coming up and then
- 4:24Speaker 1: put crazy stuff on it and then laugh when you
- 4:27Speaker 1: brought it.
- 4:29Speaker 6: Yeah, well I was trying. I was trying to tell
- 4:32Speaker 6: you that I have the ability in my mind to
- 4:34Speaker 6: be like that will work for me, that won't type
- 4:37Speaker 6: of thing.
- 4:38Speaker 4: Oh yeah, that's a good reminder I should bring that.
- 4:40Speaker 1: Yeah it dark, Yeah, that's it. Wasn't thinking that that
- 4:44Speaker 1: I should probably take that. So that's the attitude with
- 4:46Speaker 1: which you approach.
- 4:47Speaker 6: Pack Yeah, not like if I was watching yours and
- 4:50Speaker 6: you're like, oh, I have a I was gonna, yeah, pushbrew.
- 4:56Speaker 4: Clean out your tent, just like one of those little guys. Nice.
- 4:59Speaker 1: Yeah, totally No, the list and then buried right in
- 5:01Speaker 1: the middle. List is like a push broom and see
- 5:04Speaker 1: if people bring it.
- 5:05Speaker 4: See Conrad did not look at the list and he
- 5:07Speaker 4: used a sock to cover his eyes, which worked out
- 5:10Speaker 4: pretty well.
- 5:11Speaker 1: So what I want to do, I want to do.
- 5:16Speaker 1: I want to do a gear thing for a minute.
- 5:17Speaker 1: What I want to do is not what you brought,
- 5:21Speaker 1: not what you brought. But if everyone can think real quick,
- 5:24Speaker 1: you can raise your hand when you're ready. Not what
- 5:26Speaker 1: you brought, but like so so backpack hunting in June
- 5:31Speaker 1: in the mountains in east central Alaska, spring bear hunting
- 5:38Speaker 1: more like early summer bear hunting, because like it starts
- 5:41Speaker 1: turning the winter again in a couple of months, you know,
- 5:44Speaker 1: like September it'll snow right well, snow in August.
- 5:48Speaker 3: It's like early summer in the valley winter up tops.
- 5:54Speaker 1: Not what not, not what you brought that you like?
- 5:57Speaker 1: What do you what? What? What was the thing you
- 5:59Speaker 1: wish you had done to different packing? Something you'd change,
- 6:02Speaker 1: should have brought like a packing insight. Oh, if you're ready,
- 6:09Speaker 1: because I could go, I had time to know that
- 6:11Speaker 1: I was gonna do this.
- 6:12Speaker 4: I brought really ultra light rain pants.
- 6:15Speaker 1: You first give your credentials.
- 6:17Speaker 4: My name is Rick, one of the camera guys.
- 6:20Speaker 1: Well I'll do it better than that. When you're watching
- 6:22Speaker 1: a nature When you're watching Nature documentary and there's like
- 6:25Speaker 1: some crazy thing happens, You're like, how in the world
- 6:27Speaker 1: did they ever film that? Rick did it? No?
- 6:30Speaker 4: No, I've I work on this show more than I
- 6:32Speaker 4: work on Nature documentary.
- 6:33Speaker 1: But you do work on nature occasionally, don't be mine?
- 6:36Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 6:36Speaker 1: His brother's doctor.
- 6:37Speaker 4: Yeah, right, Morgan, this is your podcast. Shout out all
- 6:43Speaker 4: your your buddies up there. And hell Rick's parents are
- 6:46Speaker 4: very proud of his brother. Yeah, ultra light pants.
- 6:55Speaker 1: No, I want to get back to your credentials.
- 6:56Speaker 4: All right, Well, I've been working on this show since
- 6:59Speaker 4: twenty sixteen.
- 7:00Speaker 1: Yeah, you've been working with us for a million years.
- 7:02Speaker 1: But sometimes remember when you went to that golf course
- 7:04Speaker 1: and you had to just wait there forever waiting for
- 7:06Speaker 1: and kill a dump or something.
- 7:07Speaker 4: BBC Natural History Unit shoot, and you just.
- 7:11Speaker 1: Spent you just spend a boatload of time waiting for
- 7:14Speaker 1: a bunch of wolves to kill a moose.
- 7:15Speaker 4: Yep up for a Disney Plus show with Bertie Gregory.
- 7:20Speaker 4: So yeah, somewhat wildlife wildlife film Polar Bears, which is
- 7:24Speaker 4: cool film Polar Bears. Yeah, yeah, where in the Hudson
- 7:29Speaker 4: Bay south of Churchill.
- 7:31Speaker 1: So like I was saying, yeah, so when you watch
- 7:33Speaker 1: some animals do something, rick pro filming it.
- 7:35Speaker 4: Well, or yeah, or I'm filming the guy filming it.
- 7:37Speaker 4: You know, I'm in the he's in the mix, in
- 7:39Speaker 4: the mix.
- 7:40Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 7:41Speaker 1: Okay, Now you wish you'd have broad well I was.
- 7:45Speaker 4: You know, the weight we have to carry just a
- 7:46Speaker 4: lot of batteries, so then you try to like go
- 7:49Speaker 4: ultra light on everything else. So my rain pants were
- 7:52Speaker 4: very thin, and I brought puffy pants thinking, oh, you know,
- 7:57Speaker 4: those will keep me warm and we go up high.
- 8:00Speaker 4: But I think I should have brought thicker rain pants.
- 8:03Speaker 4: It's wind production and not not bothered with the ultra
- 8:06Speaker 4: light little ones. I mean going through the alders. If
- 8:09Speaker 4: it was wet, it would have been uh, those pants
- 8:13Speaker 4: wouldn't have survived. So no puffies, No puffies, Yeah I
- 8:18Speaker 4: had I had one too many insulation layers. I cannot.
- 8:23Speaker 1: You know, when it's my turn, I'm going to do
- 8:25Speaker 1: something that I have dialed and something that I don't.
- 8:28Speaker 1: So go ahead and hit something that you think is
- 8:30Speaker 1: something in your your general program that's dialed.
- 8:33Speaker 4: I think my using I sweat a lot, and so
- 8:36Speaker 4: it's humid, and I use a synthetic, like that first
- 8:40Speaker 4: layer synthetic and then the rest of my stuff's wool.
- 8:43Speaker 4: So I think that's the like when you when we hike,
- 8:47Speaker 4: we generally hike super fast and hard. And Steve's still
- 8:51Speaker 4: wearing like all of his layers and his gloves, and
- 8:54Speaker 4: I'm in a like a T shirt sweating, and uh
- 8:58Speaker 4: so I think I got my my bass layer game
- 9:01Speaker 4: suitable for me.
- 9:03Speaker 1: I didn't have you pegged as a sweaty man.
- 9:05Speaker 4: Oh god, just if I just start thinking too hard.
- 9:09Speaker 1: Breakout and sweat. Yeah, you know, we hike hard and
- 9:12Speaker 1: we sit hard, right, that's yeah, this is the thing.
- 9:15Speaker 4: So if you look at if you look at like
- 9:17Speaker 4: ultra light hiking lists, they're all made for hiking, stopping
- 9:22Speaker 4: and going to bed.
- 9:23Speaker 1: Yeah, that's a good point.
- 9:24Speaker 4: We we do this thing where we hike really hard
- 9:27Speaker 4: and then we sit in spots that you would never
- 9:29Speaker 4: camp in because they're cold and they're windy, and you're
- 9:32Speaker 4: exposed and you're not in your tent and you're not
- 9:34Speaker 4: in your sleeping bag. So you have to bring more
- 9:37Speaker 4: insulation layers and than somebody that's just doing like a
- 9:40Speaker 4: fast through hike situation.
- 9:42Speaker 1: Yeah, you're you're right, you get all worked up and
- 9:45Speaker 1: you sit and then all of a sudden a while
- 9:47Speaker 1: lay like freezing. My asks.
- 9:49Speaker 4: Yeah, and you're not normally if if it gets cold
- 9:52Speaker 4: and you're through hiking, you're just you're sleeping in like
- 9:55Speaker 4: your little comfy sleeping bag. We're just sitting out on
- 9:59Speaker 4: a knob, last one for a couple hours.
- 10:01Speaker 1: So that's what you got dial Yeah, Okay, who wants
- 10:05Speaker 1: to go next? We're saving Evan for last. Evan's still
- 10:08Speaker 1: formulating you got one already because he's you're still that
- 10:15Speaker 1: was Chilli, because because Evan's still acclimating to the like
- 10:20Speaker 1: you're like a horse guy.
- 10:21Speaker 2: Yeah, I haven't ever backpacked before.
- 10:23Speaker 1: So you're you're still agregating to all the like the
- 10:25Speaker 1: fancy materials.
- 10:26Speaker 2: Yeah, but it's it's nice. I mean it's like, oh yeah,
- 10:30Speaker 2: it's a lot less stuff to deal with.
- 10:32Speaker 1: Okay, keep stewing on that, Okay, working on it. If
- 10:35Speaker 1: you can put it into like a song for him,
- 10:37Speaker 1: right Limerick, Okay, Chilli, go ahead.
- 10:42Speaker 6: Uh.
- 10:43Speaker 1: I think the.
- 10:43Speaker 3: Oversight the one thing I would have done better, Like
- 10:45Speaker 3: I wasn't.
- 10:46Speaker 5: I kind of knew but didn't really fully grasp like
- 10:50Speaker 5: the fact that you know how it would affect sleeping,
- 10:54Speaker 5: like with the sun being out.
- 10:56Speaker 3: All night.
- 10:59Speaker 1: Yeah, talk about just how bright it is. Like what
- 11:01Speaker 1: activities could you do all night whatever you do during
- 11:05Speaker 1: the day. You could shoot a rifle, yeah, at any
- 11:09Speaker 1: distance all night.
- 11:11Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:12Speaker 6: Yeah, if you wanted to, you could go completely. You
- 11:15Speaker 6: can flip your day completely. Yeah, Like if you wanted
- 11:18Speaker 6: to bear hunt from six pm to you know, four am,
- 11:24Speaker 6: four am, you know, be no different. You could do
- 11:26Speaker 6: that and then sleep all during the regular day hours
- 11:29Speaker 6: that light out.
- 11:30Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 11:30Speaker 5: And so with that, like the effect that the sun
- 11:33Speaker 5: had on the tent, like when we were sleeping, kind
- 11:36Speaker 5: of it wasn't like terrible, but it kind of made
- 11:39Speaker 5: it like a little warmer than what you would get
- 11:41Speaker 5: or a lot warmer than what you get if you
- 11:43Speaker 5: had like actually darkness. And so I found that when
- 11:47Speaker 5: I'm in my sleeping bag, it got a little humid
- 11:50Speaker 5: and like my legs would like it'd get kind of
- 11:52Speaker 5: sticky because it kind of sweat a little bit. So
- 11:55Speaker 5: if I had to bring something, it would be like
- 11:59Speaker 5: a pair of like top long Johns, So like my
- 12:02Speaker 5: legs went stick together.
- 12:02Speaker 1: And I hate, I absolutely hate that you got sweaty thighs,
- 12:05Speaker 1: is what you're saying.
- 12:06Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, yes, And I'm a pretty light sleeper and
- 12:11Speaker 5: anything that's wrong I will wake me up or make
- 12:13Speaker 5: me cause me to move.
- 12:14Speaker 3: So yeah, I probably would have done that.
- 12:17Speaker 1: That was my thing.
- 12:18Speaker 5: But on the flip side, the thing that I think
- 12:21Speaker 5: I did really well was like my sleeping system set
- 12:25Speaker 5: up was like you know, like had I had one
- 12:28Speaker 5: of those Nemo accordion pads and then I had a
- 12:31Speaker 5: Nemo or a Thermoresque inflatable pad and that was like
- 12:36Speaker 5: probably and like plus my nice uh sleeping system that
- 12:41Speaker 5: was pretty dialed. Actually, my sleeping system saved your ass.
- 12:44Speaker 1: I'll get through that. Okay, that's my oversight. Save Steve's life.
- 12:49Speaker 1: So I forgot what you got dialed the sleeping my
- 12:51Speaker 1: sleeping set up, oh yeah, which is what I don't
- 12:54Speaker 1: have dialed. Yeah, yeah, you know what you're talking about,
- 12:57Speaker 1: Like that feeling you get of everything sticky and I
- 13:00Speaker 1: just sleeping bag. After a few nights, I wear those.
- 13:03Speaker 1: I sleep in those arrow wool boottop ones boottop ELK
- 13:07Speaker 1: super thin arrow will bootop LJ because it keeps you
- 13:10Speaker 1: from getting that feeling like you're glued to the fabric.
- 13:12Speaker 1: Of your bag.
- 13:13Speaker 3: I hate that.
- 13:15Speaker 2: And Seth that's the way Seth was.
- 13:17Speaker 3: Uh.
- 13:18Speaker 5: We shared a tent and he had those on every night.
- 13:21Speaker 5: I just get jealous. I also sleep in an arrow
- 13:25Speaker 5: will top.
- 13:28Speaker 1: Yeah, I guess. Yeah, so I don't stick all gluey
- 13:31Speaker 1: to my bag right weight top. Same, Thanks for sharing, Chili,
- 13:36Speaker 1: I'm ready, Okay, go ahead.
- 13:38Speaker 6: I did not bring gators on this trip, which oversight oversight.
- 13:44Speaker 1: I just forgot him. I so it sounds like someone's
- 13:47Speaker 1: reading a bad packing list.
- 13:49Speaker 6: Well, it was on the packing list. I just I
- 13:52Speaker 6: actually had him said out and then I just forgot him.
- 13:55Speaker 6: Gators would have been nice. And another thing I give
- 13:59Speaker 6: like a right well stream crossings. It rained half the
- 14:03Speaker 6: time over half the time.
- 14:05Speaker 1: Yeah, there was a forty eight hour rain stretch.
- 14:07Speaker 6: Yeah, you're going through thick altars and willows and you
- 14:13Speaker 6: just end up with wet pants.
- 14:15Speaker 1: So I wish I had gators.
- 14:17Speaker 6: And then I wish I would have brought the lightweight
- 14:21Speaker 6: at like orange attless gloves for the rain rainy days. Oh,
- 14:27Speaker 6: because I soaked out my leather gloves.
- 14:30Speaker 1: That's a good point, man, that's a good point. Yeah,
- 14:33Speaker 1: I've done that in the pass on rainy, rainy stuff.
- 14:35Speaker 1: But yeah, you'd bring like rubber commercial fishing gloves yep,
- 14:38Speaker 1: and just be like screw it now, dude.
- 14:40Speaker 6: Yeah, it's like they're not super heavy to where you're like,
- 14:44Speaker 6: you know, too hot, but they're you know, just enough
- 14:48Speaker 6: to take the edge off and you just don't get
- 14:52Speaker 6: your gloves wet.
- 14:53Speaker 1: When I publish my gear list, that might put that
- 14:55Speaker 1: in there.
- 14:55Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, we'll read it, Seth, and I'll probably read
- 14:59Speaker 6: that gear. And the thing that I had dialed was
- 15:02Speaker 6: my water system. I think tell us more liter and
- 15:05Speaker 6: a half Nalgene bottle and two of those collapsible like
- 15:11Speaker 6: platypus bottles, No big ol' ms R bladder Nope, nope,
- 15:17Speaker 6: just two of those, and I would stay like the
- 15:20Speaker 6: stuff that I felt like I needed to stairy pen.
- 15:22Speaker 6: I would just do that in the in the now gene.
- 15:25Speaker 6: And then the two platypus bottles were like my dirty
- 15:29Speaker 6: water bottles, so I would fill those up and then
- 15:32Speaker 6: fill up my big bottle and then I would stairy
- 15:35Speaker 6: pen in that, and then the as I needed I
- 15:39Speaker 6: would take from the platypus bags dump into the Nalgene bottle.
- 15:44Speaker 1: Then and you're happy with that.
- 15:46Speaker 3: Yeah, But I mean a lot of the stuff we
- 15:49Speaker 3: drank from we didn't didn't need to.
- 15:51Speaker 1: I didn't purify a thing the whole trip. We were
- 15:53Speaker 1: higher than the beavers. Yeah, and we're just drinking water
- 15:56Speaker 1: out of Glacier.
- 15:57Speaker 3: That stuff that came out of that side drainage that
- 15:59Speaker 3: we went up that you said was like the the
- 16:02Speaker 3: Grayling stream, Yep, that stuff was just seems so pure.
- 16:08Speaker 1: Yeah, I did.
- 16:09Speaker 3: The Glacier River had a little bit of like silty
- 16:12Speaker 3: clo oh.
- 16:12Speaker 1: Yeah, I had a lot of that. And you know,
- 16:14Speaker 1: I was bringing this up and I shouldn't even bring
- 16:16Speaker 1: it up because I'm not. I'll bring it up with
- 16:17Speaker 1: the with the caveat that. I don't don't know if
- 16:19Speaker 1: this is true. I feel like guys that live up
- 16:22Speaker 1: here have told me that there's like that it's that
- 16:26Speaker 1: drinking too much of that, that it's not good to
- 16:29Speaker 1: drink too much of that glacial till or they just
- 16:33Speaker 1: don't like it. So when I'm with my brother Danny,
- 16:35Speaker 1: they'll bring a they'll bring a like a picture like
- 16:40Speaker 1: a big collapsable dog bowl yep. Like it's like a
- 16:45Speaker 1: like a duffel bag that's made out of that what
- 16:48Speaker 1: the hell's the material on? Todd trying to think of
- 16:51Speaker 1: like a it's like a duffel bag bucket. I don't
- 16:53Speaker 1: un till you call it just like a waterproof Yeah,
- 16:56Speaker 1: like a waterproof bag bucket. Yeah. And they'll dip will
- 17:00Speaker 1: dip out of that three four gallons at night and
- 17:04Speaker 1: then let's settle and then drink it in the morning
- 17:08Speaker 1: and in the morning when it's not being agitated by
- 17:11Speaker 1: flow in the morning. It's just like an eighth of
- 17:13Speaker 1: an inch of just clay, yea laying on the bombs stuff.
- 17:18Speaker 1: So they'll set it out at night just to let
- 17:20Speaker 1: it settle, to not drink it. But I feel like
- 17:22Speaker 1: they were someone was telling me something about that. It's
- 17:25Speaker 1: not just like that, you shouldn't do that too much.
- 17:29Speaker 1: I could be making that up. So don't stop drinking
- 17:32Speaker 1: glacial till based on what I'm telling you do your
- 17:34Speaker 1: own reasons.
- 17:35Speaker 6: Maybe maybe looking back, I would I would probably liked
- 17:38Speaker 6: to have had a filter for that stuff instead of
- 17:41Speaker 6: just to get the till out. Just to get the
- 17:42Speaker 6: till out, you run through your underwear. Well you had
- 17:45Speaker 6: more till, yeah, but no, that's that's all I got.
- 18:01Speaker 1: Conrad, give your background. You never been on the show before? No,
- 18:05Speaker 1: first time, first time on the Mediator podcast. But Brad
- 18:08Speaker 1: Brooks has been on the podcast and you're his friend. Yep.
- 18:11Speaker 3: I'm an old climbing buddy at Brad Brooks. I grew
- 18:15Speaker 3: up climbing with him for a number of years.
- 18:17Speaker 1: Uh.
- 18:18Speaker 3: Started filming with him some of his hunts a couple
- 18:22Speaker 3: of years ago, never hunted before. He was like, you
- 18:26Speaker 3: want to go film some film some hunts and I
- 18:29Speaker 3: know you can keep up. And I was like, yeah,
- 18:31Speaker 3: let's do it. And UH went out for about a
- 18:35Speaker 3: week and a half on a rifle elk hunt and
- 18:39Speaker 3: I thought it was just awesome, just running around in
- 18:43Speaker 3: the woods.
- 18:44Speaker 1: It's great.
- 18:45Speaker 3: And then had been filming with him for a couple
- 18:47Speaker 3: of years. UH, and then got connected with you guys
- 18:52Speaker 3: with through Brad and then oh, so he's not pissed
- 18:54Speaker 3: at you with us, No, he's I told him, And
- 18:57Speaker 3: he was like, oh, yeah, that's awesome. He he can
- 19:00Speaker 3: acted me with Sam.
- 19:01Speaker 4: Uh.
- 19:01Speaker 3: And then my buddy Drew Smith his brothers with with
- 19:05Speaker 3: Dirt and he connected me with Dirt and had a
- 19:08Speaker 3: good conversation with him, and and we have a lot
- 19:11Speaker 3: of the same background. He fought fire. I fought fire.
- 19:14Speaker 3: We were a year apart at a in Neats Bay
- 19:18Speaker 3: in Alaska. I worked up there in a hatchery and
- 19:22Speaker 3: and he was on a boat up there, and so yeah,
- 19:26Speaker 3: here here I am. And it's awesome.
- 19:28Speaker 1: I was.
- 19:29Speaker 3: I kept calling dirt two point zero. Yeah, yeah, Sam
- 19:32Speaker 3: sat a couple of times too. Yeah, that's yeah. And
- 19:37Speaker 3: he recommended me and I had never met him, so
- 19:39Speaker 3: that's awesome.
- 19:40Speaker 1: Well that might be like a Garrett did the wedding,
- 19:44Speaker 1: so you know, or or didn't. Sounds like.
- 19:48Speaker 3: We had a thirty minute conversation. He was like, you're like, yeah,
- 19:52Speaker 3: I'll put in a good word for you. And I
- 19:53Speaker 3: was like, man, I've never worked with you. You don't
- 19:55Speaker 3: have to do that, but I really appreciate it.
- 19:58Speaker 1: I'm I'm glad he did this. But it was a
- 19:59Speaker 1: fun hang out.
- 20:00Speaker 3: Yeah, super fun.
- 20:01Speaker 1: Okay, hit me with your hit me with your insights. Yeah,
- 20:04Speaker 1: I forgot Long John's this trip. I I I wish
- 20:08Speaker 1: you'd have brought it up. Well, when I get to
- 20:10Speaker 1: my thing, you'll know why you should have brought it up.
- 20:12Speaker 3: Okay, Well I forgot Long John's. I realized it on
- 20:15Speaker 3: the on these gonna be like I had. I realized
- 20:22Speaker 3: it on the on the drive.
- 20:23Speaker 1: Why did you say anything?
- 20:24Speaker 3: I told Sam and she and she was like, oh,
- 20:26Speaker 3: do we need to get you long John's ad. No,
- 20:29Speaker 3: I didn't want to complain, was just tough it out.
- 20:32Speaker 3: But anyway, should have brought long John's.
- 20:37Speaker 6: Uh.
- 20:38Speaker 3: And I probably would have brought an extra bass layer
- 20:42Speaker 3: for the top just for sleeping with all this wet weather.
- 20:45Speaker 1: Uh.
- 20:46Speaker 3: It's nice to get in your bag and have have
- 20:48Speaker 3: dry clothes him. So those those are the two things
- 20:52Speaker 3: I would have would have brought.
- 20:54Speaker 1: And then what do you what? What? What like? What
- 20:56Speaker 1: thing in your pack? And thing feels like just totally tight.
- 20:59Speaker 1: I think my sleeping system earplugs because I'm sleeping with
- 21:04Speaker 1: Rick and he snores. Yeah.
- 21:08Speaker 3: Yeah, it used to me and I did not know this.
- 21:10Speaker 3: I don't know about it has developed recently. But a
- 21:15Speaker 3: nice tent, nice sleeping bag, good good pad sleeps. Sleep
- 21:19Speaker 3: for me is super important after big, long days. So
- 21:22Speaker 3: the more sleep I can get, the better. Blow up pad,
- 21:25Speaker 3: blow up pad, yeah, exo pad uh, and our golly
- 21:28Speaker 3: sleeping bag twenty degree bag super warm and then our
- 21:32Speaker 3: golly uh uh two p tent got it?
- 21:35Speaker 1: Yep, and that's like the new fan dangled floorless single
- 21:40Speaker 1: wall tents.
- 21:41Speaker 3: Yep, single wall super waterproof. Got a little condensation problems
- 21:46Speaker 3: when it's when it's raining out, but every ten has that.
- 21:50Speaker 1: Yeah, we didn't.
- 21:51Speaker 3: We me and me and Rick were throwing back and
- 21:54Speaker 3: forth if we need to bring an insert, and when
- 21:56Speaker 3: we came up here and it's all that snow, we
- 21:58Speaker 3: didn't bring an insert and just rule the doll floorless.
- 22:01Speaker 3: And it was a pound to carry around your backpack.
- 22:04Speaker 1: So that's nice.
- 22:05Speaker 3: Yeah, that's super nice.
- 22:08Speaker 1: You ready, You know you have to do yours yet,
- 22:10Speaker 1: because I can do mine. You can if you just
- 22:12Speaker 1: get nervous. You want to get it over with.
- 22:14Speaker 2: Let's do it, let's do it.
- 22:15Speaker 1: You want to hit it.
- 22:16Speaker 2: So the thing that I the only the only thing
- 22:18Speaker 2: that I missed when uh, when I was up there
- 22:21Speaker 2: because you guys told me what to get or got
- 22:25Speaker 2: got me rigged out, was I wished I had some
- 22:28Speaker 2: shoes to walk around camp in. Wish I brought that. Yeah,
- 22:32Speaker 2: if I could get away with the Yeah, but just
- 22:34Speaker 2: because putting your boots on after you've been in them
- 22:37Speaker 2: for a while, which the boots were Honestly, I was
- 22:39Speaker 2: talking about it yesterday. They're good, like pretty comfortable boots,
- 22:45Speaker 2: but still kind of putting them back on to slip
- 22:47Speaker 2: around to go do whatever you need to do around
- 22:50Speaker 2: the camp. And uh, as far as being dialed in,
- 22:54Speaker 2: I was not dialed in, but I had.
- 22:56Speaker 1: I did wear.
- 22:58Speaker 2: I can't take credit for being dialed in.
- 23:03Speaker 1: Like I had.
- 23:03Speaker 2: As far as my layers went, there were they were good.
- 23:05Speaker 2: I had or Long John's the whole trip, and two
- 23:09Speaker 2: sets of like a T shirt over the long Johns
- 23:12Speaker 2: on top, and pretty much slept in my clothes and
- 23:17Speaker 2: brought like a couple pairs of socks to dry one
- 23:21Speaker 2: and do the other gaiters and stuff like that. It
- 23:23Speaker 2: was I mean, I can't think of a time I
- 23:26Speaker 2: was particularly like the temperature or rain was bothering me,
- 23:30Speaker 2: you know. And if you got cold, you could put
- 23:32Speaker 2: that extra layer of rain rain gear on and you
- 23:37Speaker 2: can stay pretty warm even sitting still.
- 23:39Speaker 1: And you didn't blow up your sleeping pad till the
- 23:40Speaker 1: third night.
- 23:41Speaker 2: No, I didn't know how to do it.
- 23:46Speaker 1: Sleeping on the ground.
- 23:48Speaker 4: It was.
- 23:48Speaker 2: It was pretty good, but like the sleeping pad's real
- 23:52Speaker 2: real good. I got in there and I didn't see
- 23:58Speaker 2: like the blow up bad and I was trying to
- 24:01Speaker 2: blow it up with my mouth and I was like, oh,
- 24:03Speaker 2: this is not gonna work.
- 24:04Speaker 6: I just.
- 24:06Speaker 1: Defeated like the again. Man was yell over to my
- 24:12Speaker 1: tent area and.
- 24:14Speaker 2: But it it, it all worked out.
- 24:17Speaker 1: Oh that's good. Here's here's my problem. Uh. I used
- 24:25Speaker 1: to never use inflatable pads. Sleep pads, but the best
- 24:29Speaker 1: thing in the world until so I got mine. Really,
- 24:32Speaker 1: I was kind of in like a little puddle for
- 24:34Speaker 1: a while, and I went to dry my bag and
- 24:38Speaker 1: got some not even ambers. Dude like ash put some
- 24:43Speaker 1: burn some holes in my pad. I was trying to
- 24:46Speaker 1: dry my pad and I burned some holes in my pad.
- 24:48Speaker 1: Couldn't find all the suns of bitches. Found one one night,
- 24:51Speaker 1: found not one of the other nights, still one thing
- 24:53Speaker 1: in it. And you realize that, Uh, you put a
- 24:58Speaker 1: lot of faith in those. You put a lot of
- 25:02Speaker 1: faith in something that's pretty fallible. I mean they're great,
- 25:05Speaker 1: but they're fallible. And Rick was carrying a blow up
- 25:09Speaker 1: pad and he had a little halfy a little one
- 25:13Speaker 1: of those.
- 25:14Speaker 4: I guess just in case, just you can use it
- 25:18Speaker 4: as a pad when you're glassing.
- 25:19Speaker 1: But you said in case, my thing, I don't like
- 25:25Speaker 1: I don't usually pack with a ton of in cases,
- 25:27Speaker 1: but those I got two sleeping bags in case something
- 25:32Speaker 1: happens to sleep.
- 25:33Speaker 4: And it is sort of the in cases the problem
- 25:35Speaker 4: with packing. If you bring all the stuff in case,
- 25:38Speaker 4: then you just have too much ship.
- 25:40Speaker 1: But the blow up pad is the vulnerability. Chili brought
- 25:43Speaker 1: a blow up pad and underpad.
- 25:47Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean.
- 25:49Speaker 5: Because I didn't I don't have a tarp like where
- 25:52Speaker 5: like or like a footprint to lay down like on
- 25:56Speaker 5: the just on the ground in between you and your
- 25:58Speaker 5: and your blow up mattress or blow up had. So
- 26:01Speaker 5: instead of just going to buy one sporadically, I just
- 26:04Speaker 5: I had this Accordion Nemo phone pad, the one that
- 26:07Speaker 5: we all used to kind of sit down on the
- 26:08Speaker 5: ground when we're glassing, just a full length one.
- 26:12Speaker 2: I was like, well, I'll just use that on the ground.
- 26:14Speaker 2: It's like six seven ounces or whatever it is.
- 26:18Speaker 5: Strive it to the bottom of my pack, like it's
- 26:20Speaker 5: not gonna the footprint of it's not gonna like cause
- 26:23Speaker 5: me to have to get a bigger bag or anything.
- 26:26Speaker 5: So yeah, that was kind of my thinking and it worked.
- 26:28Speaker 5: It worked great, And luckily Seth had like a little
- 26:31Speaker 5: plastic thing as well, so I could throw that down and.
- 26:36Speaker 6: Yeah, it's just kind of just like a tart if
- 26:39Speaker 6: not comfortable, more comfortable, yep. Yeah, I brought a little
- 26:42Speaker 6: chunk of before I left. It was like the last
- 26:44Speaker 6: thing I grabbed was just a little chunk of plastic
- 26:46Speaker 6: that I used to like cover my garden when it frosts.
- 26:50Speaker 2: And I threw that in.
- 26:51Speaker 6: I was like, ah, just in case, like I need
- 26:53Speaker 6: to put something under my sleeting pad or whatever. And
- 26:57Speaker 6: then Chile ended up grabbing me a footprint from the
- 26:59Speaker 6: store Janet, But so I still had that and then
- 27:02Speaker 6: gave it out to Chili.
- 27:04Speaker 1: Uh. What I got dialed is over the years on backpacking,
- 27:08Speaker 1: over the years I have I have pretty much eliminated
- 27:11Speaker 1: any changes of clothes extra clothes, yeh, with one exception.
- 27:17Speaker 1: I keep in a dry bag, the extra set of
- 27:22Speaker 1: bass layers, extra set of thin bass layers. I keep
- 27:25Speaker 1: the driving and like this never touched them as much
- 27:28Speaker 1: as it rained. I left them in there because it's
- 27:30Speaker 1: like I leave them in there being like if something
- 27:32Speaker 1: bad happens, I can get in my bag, which I
- 27:36Speaker 1: keep in a dry bag, I can get in my
- 27:38Speaker 1: bag with dry stuff at night. But I've gotten overcarrying
- 27:44Speaker 1: any kind of extra anything. Well that's not I carry
- 27:48Speaker 1: a pair of socks. I cart one pair of socks
- 27:53Speaker 1: because the worst case, you washed pair in the creek,
- 27:55Speaker 1: put them on your back to dry. I got rid
- 27:56Speaker 1: of all that kind of junk, like, oh I have
- 27:59Speaker 1: extra pants, I might want to change my shirt. I
- 28:01Speaker 1: just I have the one thing I'm wearing, and like,
- 28:04Speaker 1: you just get used to it. It's funky, you get
- 28:07Speaker 1: over it. And I don't care any kind of extra
- 28:09Speaker 1: clothes except for those except for those lj's that I
- 28:13Speaker 1: have as an insurance policy. Or should a camera guy
- 28:16Speaker 1: forget his ljs? Well, now I know I would have
- 28:19Speaker 1: happily dipped me my extra ljs.
- 28:21Speaker 3: I brought an extra like mid layer, wool ool mid layer,
- 28:25Speaker 3: and I never touched it.
- 28:26Speaker 1: Yep, yep.
- 28:28Speaker 3: It's like the one thing I was like, I should
- 28:29Speaker 3: have just left this behind.
- 28:31Speaker 1: Because what happens when you do when you bring extra
- 28:33Speaker 1: clothes is there was mornings when I was like to myself, thinking, man,
- 28:38Speaker 1: I don't want to put them clothes on, mm hmm,
- 28:41Speaker 1: But then you to put the other ones on, and
- 28:43Speaker 1: then those ones are messed up too, and then now
- 28:45Speaker 1: you just got whatever you yeah, instead of one pair
- 28:48Speaker 1: of pants that are now dry because you wore them,
- 28:51Speaker 1: now you got one wet ass pair of pants in
- 28:52Speaker 1: your backpack. It's just like I just got rid of
- 28:56Speaker 1: all that junk. I think it was the coldest it
- 28:58Speaker 1: could get. Have what appropriate? So I had like a
- 29:02Speaker 1: like a air wool top, synthetic hoodie, brooks Down bast
- 29:10Speaker 1: or brooks Down jacket and omen storm shelter rain jacket.
- 29:15Speaker 1: That was it. Same thing on my same thing pants,
- 29:20Speaker 1: the aarrow wool pants, a pair of pants, and then
- 29:23Speaker 1: the lightweight rain pants.
- 29:25Speaker 6: You mentioned brooks Down Best. I brought one of those,
- 29:28Speaker 6: and that's like that's a hot tip in my opinion.
- 29:32Speaker 6: It's like very compacts, very tiny. It's like the size
- 29:35Speaker 6: of a scroll, very lightly and it's like it's just
- 29:40Speaker 6: enough to like take the edge off and like keep
- 29:42Speaker 6: your core warm. It's it's a great piece of gear.
- 29:44Speaker 6: I forgot I that kind of messed up.
- 29:47Speaker 5: Pro tip every when you're in the back country, don't
- 29:50Speaker 5: forget a spork or a spoon, because then you might
- 29:53Speaker 5: be left whittling one and then your buddies might come
- 29:56Speaker 5: up after three hours of whittling, saying, I got two
- 29:59Speaker 5: extra spins, really good spoon.
- 30:06Speaker 2: We were having so much fun.
- 30:09Speaker 6: One.
- 30:09Speaker 4: Oh yeah, I need to get my little spoon back.
- 30:12Speaker 1: Well it's mine now. But that's too short. It's too short. Yeah,
- 30:15Speaker 1: get a long one, get a long spin. Oh yeah,
- 30:18Speaker 1: they make the long dogs just for eat and freeze drive.
- 30:21Speaker 1: So I have to give me, give me your give
- 30:23Speaker 1: me your impressions, man, like you're you're you're just your
- 30:25Speaker 1: general impressions.
- 30:28Speaker 2: That is like the prettiest country I've ever seen, or
- 30:32Speaker 2: as pretty as anything. It's more interesting seeing that glacier,
- 30:35Speaker 2: and it's like seeing we We saw more wildlife on
- 30:38Speaker 2: this trip than a bunch of stuff I never laid
- 30:40Speaker 2: eyes on. But as as far as.
- 30:45Speaker 1: What we saw for we hit all the we hit
- 30:47Speaker 1: six so we had We saw a caribou, doll sheep,
- 30:51Speaker 1: ye a moose mm hmmm, wolves, grizzly black bear, yep.
- 30:58Speaker 3: I think that's it park.
- 31:04Speaker 2: Yeah, and you got caribou. Yeah, that was that was
- 31:08Speaker 2: interesting man, to get to see all that stuff, get
- 31:11Speaker 2: see that many sheep, like I feel like not that
- 31:14Speaker 2: many people get to even see those things. Yeah, that
- 31:17Speaker 2: was that was really neat to me and just being there,
- 31:19Speaker 2: being in that that kind of a environment is It's
- 31:25Speaker 2: something that you, hm, it's easy to spend a lot
- 31:29Speaker 2: of time like making excuses and not getting it done. Like,
- 31:32Speaker 2: I'm really happy that I got to go and had
- 31:35Speaker 2: a reason to go because it's like really reignited my
- 31:39Speaker 2: love for this stuff, just because you you just procrastinate
- 31:42Speaker 2: and put it off and then don't get back on
- 31:43Speaker 2: the horse, you know. And this was a good one,
- 31:48Speaker 2: like a really really good trip.
- 31:50Speaker 1: Yeah, because you you so you were born in Oklahoma
- 31:53Speaker 1: and spent your life in Oklahoma. And I remember telling
- 31:57Speaker 1: me that at one point in time you and your
- 31:58Speaker 1: dad took took your horses and went out and you
- 32:02Speaker 1: guys did are on Western Titan hunting.
- 32:05Speaker 2: Yeah, we went.
- 32:05Speaker 1: We just kind of just went and did it all.
- 32:07Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, he and I which my dad knows quite
- 32:10Speaker 2: a bit about about packing and uh and really about
- 32:13Speaker 2: hunting in general. And uh he took me up there
- 32:18Speaker 2: and showed me, taught me a whole lot and really
- 32:21Speaker 2: gave me like a love for We had a great trip.
- 32:24Speaker 2: You know, we were in the elk and we didn't
- 32:26Speaker 2: come home with anything, but it didn't matter, you know.
- 32:28Speaker 2: It was like we were so close, we had opportunities,
- 32:32Speaker 2: we were seeing stuff, and it was like it was
- 32:35Speaker 2: the wildest place I'd ever been at that point in time.
- 32:37Speaker 2: Everything just feels so, I mean, there's it's easy to
- 32:42Speaker 2: be hunting places that are easy to access and feel
- 32:47Speaker 2: like it's not authentic enough for me to feel like
- 32:50Speaker 2: I'm doing anything sometimes, you know, And when you get
- 32:53Speaker 2: back into this stuff that not a lot of people
- 32:54Speaker 2: get to see it, it just feels more special to me.
- 32:57Speaker 2: And it's just got another it's just another level and
- 33:01Speaker 2: more of an experience. But uh, yeah, I love this stuff,
- 33:05Speaker 2: Like I've never dreamed that I'd get to fly in
- 33:08Speaker 2: on a super cover, be in one ever have reason
- 33:10Speaker 2: to be in one, you know.
- 33:11Speaker 1: So it's yeah, Well, the thing I didn't know about
- 33:14Speaker 1: the thing I didn't know about you when we spoke
- 33:16Speaker 1: before and just communicated over text message and whatnot, is
- 33:21Speaker 1: I didn't know that you got into coon hunting for
- 33:22Speaker 1: a while.
- 33:23Speaker 2: Yeah. I was a coon hunter. That was my That's
- 33:26Speaker 2: what we did for a long time.
- 33:28Speaker 1: And so that was the kind of dogs you brought.
- 33:30Speaker 2: Up for the first dogs I really had that were
- 33:34Speaker 2: my first hunting dogs. Yeah, we had I had a
- 33:37Speaker 2: few different kinds of coonhounds.
- 33:39Speaker 1: I had some.
- 33:40Speaker 2: I had a pretty good plot hound, and I had
- 33:43Speaker 2: a couple of blue tick dogs that would tree a coon.
- 33:46Speaker 2: And I was, you know, I was fifteen, fourteen to
- 33:49Speaker 2: sixteen probably when I was really really into it.
- 33:53Speaker 1: So like in your high school years, you're going out
- 33:55Speaker 1: at night.
- 33:56Speaker 2: Oh yeah, yeah, going out, man. I had two or
- 33:59Speaker 2: three buddies that that hunted and we'd go every night
- 34:02Speaker 2: we could.
- 34:04Speaker 1: And that was like before the quail thing.
- 34:06Speaker 2: Uh yeah, I kind of traded that for for quail hunting.
- 34:10Speaker 1: I went.
- 34:11Speaker 2: I had one good hunt with in front of a
- 34:14Speaker 2: good dog in the hills, and we we killed birds.
- 34:17Speaker 2: I think I might, I don't think I shot a
- 34:19Speaker 2: quail in in the timber. For a year after that
- 34:23Speaker 2: trying to. I mean, I had to learn how to
- 34:25Speaker 2: shoot because it's it's tough shooting, and I just it
- 34:29Speaker 2: was hard and I fell, you know, fell in love
- 34:30Speaker 2: with it, and I had I've still got dogs on
- 34:34Speaker 2: my place that are descendants of that dog that I
- 34:37Speaker 2: went on my first quail hunt.
- 34:38Speaker 1: Yeah, how many dogs you keep knowing? How many bird dogs?
- 34:41Speaker 2: The bird dogs. I me and my buddy Phil, he's
- 34:45Speaker 2: actually training on on some right now. But I've got
- 34:48Speaker 2: a I got one wire haired dog that that is
- 34:51Speaker 2: mine that I've done everything on. And then we've got
- 34:55Speaker 2: to two pointers because I sold sold one, so just
- 34:58Speaker 2: some guys that needed one.
- 35:00Speaker 1: Did you ever get into squirrel dogging? Yeah?
- 35:02Speaker 2: I went and we had some dogs, you know. We
- 35:05Speaker 2: we did a whole lot of that, riding on like
- 35:08Speaker 2: horseback riding, shooting with like squirrel hunting. Yeah, training with
- 35:12Speaker 2: a dog, and we did a lot of it. It
- 35:16Speaker 2: was a lot of fun. We had friends that had
- 35:19Speaker 2: a one really good dog, and but I never had
- 35:24Speaker 2: I never really had any that I can think of,
- 35:28Speaker 2: not on purpose, you know.
- 35:33Speaker 1: And then you do use your same dogs for waterfowl hunting.
- 35:37Speaker 2: I have those, Yeah, I have a versatile hunting dog
- 35:39Speaker 2: that those draw tars, just the German bread wire hairs
- 35:45Speaker 2: are all of them will get in the water. But
- 35:48Speaker 2: those are specifically, you know, made to do everything. Like
- 35:52Speaker 2: they've been bringing them pretty tight for a long time.
- 35:54Speaker 1: You know. Everybody's been training up their dogs do now,
- 35:56Speaker 1: which kind of like bums me out but kind of
- 35:58Speaker 1: makes me jealous. Is got all these dogs now finding morels?
- 36:02Speaker 7: Man?
- 36:03Speaker 3: Now?
- 36:03Speaker 1: How did they?
- 36:04Speaker 2: Yeah that that's interesting.
- 36:05Speaker 1: These little tin looks like a chew tin with a
- 36:07Speaker 1: bunch of holes in it. Put some morals in there.
- 36:10Speaker 2: So you want to want a dog on that you
- 36:12Speaker 2: don't want.
- 36:12Speaker 1: You don't want to I wish it was. It's like
- 36:15Speaker 1: just yet another thing that demystifies the morale. But it's
- 36:19Speaker 1: yet another thing to demystifies the moral, like them learning
- 36:22Speaker 1: to cultivate morels should be illegal, should be illegal to
- 36:25Speaker 1: find them with a dog. But since it's not now
- 36:28Speaker 1: killing me that I don't have one of them dogs.
- 36:30Speaker 1: My brother Danny went out hunting morels and he said
- 36:33Speaker 1: they filled a bucket with a dog. And he says, dude,
- 36:35Speaker 1: if that while dog wasn't there, it would have been,
- 36:37Speaker 1: like you, it'd have been like a two or three
- 36:39Speaker 1: it would have been a two or three morel day. Really, yeah,
- 36:42Speaker 1: there's probably he's a big mushroom hunter, he said. It
- 36:44Speaker 1: would have been yet another two or three morell search.
- 36:48Speaker 1: He said, the dog is like bing bing bing bing.
- 36:50Speaker 2: You know, there's a bunch of gunshot dogs that you
- 36:53Speaker 2: could probably turn into a morale dog. That's probably a
- 36:56Speaker 2: good job for a bunch of sensitive dogs.
- 36:59Speaker 1: I'm wondering if my dumb little dog.
- 37:01Speaker 2: Probably I'll take that out with my kids.
- 37:05Speaker 3: It's nice how you talked about it wouldn't do shit
- 37:08Speaker 3: for you.
- 37:09Speaker 1: Well, here's what the dog does do. Like, it finds.
- 37:13Speaker 1: That dog is very good at finding red squirrels, and
- 37:15Speaker 1: once it finds one and sees it, it's not leaving.
- 37:18Speaker 1: But it doesn't notify you that it found one. So
- 37:21Speaker 1: the moral dog that my brother Danny was out with
- 37:24Speaker 1: doesn't notify you that it found a morele It just
- 37:26Speaker 1: stops doing anything and it stays there. He said, you
- 37:31Speaker 1: can probably teach it the bark. I don't know. I
- 37:32Speaker 1: don't know if you can teach dogs to bark. It's hard.
- 37:35Speaker 1: But he said, that dog just finds morel after morale,
- 37:38Speaker 1: after Morrell, after morell. That's cool, I know, I kind of.
- 37:42Speaker 1: It's like, but then you're keeping a dog for fifty weeks,
- 37:48Speaker 1: for two weeks of action.
- 37:52Speaker 2: We just like to have a second job.
- 37:53Speaker 1: Some people just like having a dog because where are
- 37:55Speaker 1: gonna put it the rest of the time. Where you
- 38:00Speaker 1: gonna keep it the fifty weeks out of the year,
- 38:02Speaker 1: you're not hunting on your couch. So tell me, tell
- 38:09Speaker 1: me what's going on. Tell me what give me some,
- 38:11Speaker 1: Give everybody some. Turnpike Troubadours.
- 38:14Speaker 2: We put out a record which was kind of a
- 38:18Speaker 2: quick turnaround for us. We put out a record in April.
- 38:24Speaker 2: What makes a quick turnaround less than two years, you know,
- 38:29Speaker 2: or sometimes we've gone like six or seven years between records.
- 38:31Speaker 1: So that that's pretty speedy, very quick. I was surprised.
- 38:37Speaker 1: So when you guys made this album, I'm surprised that
- 38:39Speaker 1: you go in and you kind of like it's like
- 38:41Speaker 1: a very intense two weeks and you come in like
- 38:45Speaker 1: you got your ideas and your basics, but you're really
- 38:47Speaker 1: like building it over two weeks.
- 38:50Speaker 2: Yeah, it's like a got a pretty good shell of
- 38:53Speaker 2: a song and like an idea and exactly. You know,
- 38:57Speaker 2: sometimes I'll have a lot of lyrics and just be
- 39:01Speaker 2: sort of trimming them and just editing. And then sometimes
- 39:05Speaker 2: it's I come because like sometimes in those high pressure situations,
- 39:10Speaker 2: if you don't have to come up with just tons
- 39:12Speaker 2: of material door you're just buried in like feeling like
- 39:15Speaker 2: you're not gonna make it, you can come up with
- 39:18Speaker 2: one idea and complete it really quickly and it's a
- 39:20Speaker 2: good you know, it has been in the past for
- 39:22Speaker 2: me a good, good idea, like a good song. So yeah,
- 39:29Speaker 2: we we went in with just like iPhone recordings of
- 39:34Speaker 2: eighty percent of it, ninety percent of it, and would
- 39:39Speaker 2: just walk in the studio and flesh it out and
- 39:43Speaker 2: play it, you know, and hopefully I didn't have to
- 39:46Speaker 2: sing it that day so I could. I'd sing like
- 39:49Speaker 2: a rough track or hum of verse or whatever, and
- 39:51Speaker 2: then I go back and make sure that the lyrics
- 39:54Speaker 2: were exactly how I wanted them.
- 39:57Speaker 1: And then I had to ask you about this till now.
- 40:00Speaker 1: I was kind of wait until now about the you'd
- 40:02Speaker 1: contact me at one point and you were looking for
- 40:05Speaker 1: a picture of a deer in velvet for the album
- 40:07Speaker 1: called Yeah. I never said why.
- 40:10Speaker 2: Yeah, it was so there's like there are some animal
- 40:16Speaker 2: images in that song it's called on the Red River,
- 40:20Speaker 2: and uh, I thought we were looking for themes for
- 40:27Speaker 2: for artwork while we were in the studio, and I thought, well,
- 40:31Speaker 2: what the hell, you know, so let's just put these
- 40:36Speaker 2: images up. And like I mentioned a kelpie dog in
- 40:39Speaker 2: that song, which is kind of a not the most
- 40:43Speaker 2: well known animal in the world, and uh so I thought, well,
- 40:47Speaker 2: I'll put one on the cover so when people.
- 40:49Speaker 1: Ask what it is, it's easy. It's an easy restaur
- 40:53Speaker 1: on the cover.
- 40:54Speaker 2: Yeah, and then I thought, well, I'll build off that,
- 40:58Speaker 2: you know, and we've so we used they from that
- 41:00Speaker 2: that stuff and uh put it put it there in
- 41:05Speaker 2: sort of like an old like kind of like the
- 41:08Speaker 2: Wild America like filter on it. It looks like, yeah,
- 41:13Speaker 2: it looks like with Marty Stafford stuff.
- 41:15Speaker 1: Yeah, I got it. Yeah, and then that's been Uh,
- 41:20Speaker 1: that's out. Everybody can go check it out. And you
- 41:21Speaker 1: guys are gonna start touring soon.
- 41:23Speaker 2: Yeah, we'll go on like a real tour. We're gonna
- 41:26Speaker 2: do some stuff in in the UK and then we
- 41:29Speaker 2: come back over here and we do. I want to
- 41:32Speaker 2: say it's I told you it was more date sentators.
- 41:35Speaker 2: I think it's twenty something dates all over the US.
- 41:39Speaker 1: So so if people want to come check you.
- 41:40Speaker 2: Out, yeah, should it should be something to see.
- 41:43Speaker 1: Dude, I'm gonna make one of them. I'm gonna make
- 41:45Speaker 1: one of those dates work and come out. Hell. So
- 41:47Speaker 1: my wife's dying to come see you guys. It'll be
- 41:50Speaker 1: fun and I'll go along. So I'm gonna fly out
- 41:57Speaker 1: and check out one of the shows.
- 41:59Speaker 2: Try to let you know what's the ones that I know,
- 42:01Speaker 2: are best sonically or best to hang out in.
- 42:06Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I don't want to catch you. You got
- 42:08Speaker 1: like some town with a bunch of cousins and stuff
- 42:10Speaker 1: in it. I need to I need to find a
- 42:12Speaker 1: time when there's no one gonna be cousins. Cousins allowed. Yeah, man,
- 42:17Speaker 1: I want to come see it bad. So you guys
- 42:19Speaker 1: are going to Europe and sometimes you tour and you're
- 42:21Speaker 1: with other bands, but your tour is gonna be like
- 42:24Speaker 1: a Turnpike Troubadoor tour. This will be our headline headline tour. Yeah,
- 42:29Speaker 1: when you go to Europe, you you do. You're part
- 42:31Speaker 1: of a broader thing.
- 42:32Speaker 2: Yeah, we'll do a few headline and bar shows over there,
- 42:35Speaker 2: and then we'll be opening for Zach Bryan, who's draws
- 42:38Speaker 2: huge over there.
- 42:40Speaker 1: Got it? And you brought like a ukulele with you.
- 42:42Speaker 2: No, it's an old cool cowboy guitar, so like a
- 42:46Speaker 2: Marty Robbins's. It's a Martin guitar. It's pretty cool.
- 42:48Speaker 1: Yeah, tell me about that, man.
- 42:50Speaker 2: It's like a forties model Martin that a guy that
- 42:54Speaker 2: works with me named Sherman had this guitar and he said, hey,
- 42:59Speaker 2: you should start using that because it's easy, easy to
- 43:04Speaker 2: fly with. And then he wound up selling to me
- 43:07Speaker 2: that it's a I think Marty Robbins played one of
- 43:11Speaker 2: these on some.
- 43:11Speaker 1: Of those recordings, so it's traveling guitar.
- 43:14Speaker 2: But yeah, it's just when I take it can take
- 43:16Speaker 2: everywhere because it's so small.
- 43:17Speaker 1: God, now you're gonna play something. Yeah, you're gonna play
- 43:21Speaker 1: the Red River.
- 43:22Speaker 4: I think so, I think that would be And I
- 43:24Speaker 4: gotta make uh move camera.
- 43:28Speaker 1: Before you start. I tell you something funny. I've walked
- 43:31Speaker 1: next to a million dudes singing a million songs out
- 43:33Speaker 1: in the woods. It was so weird to hear dudes
- 43:36Speaker 1: singing a song. It was like like a like really
- 43:39Speaker 1: like a singer because I'm always like, Y need your money. Yeah,
- 43:48Speaker 1: there's a lot of that that goes on these shoots.
- 43:50Speaker 1: You're like, it should be nice to have a real
- 43:53Speaker 1: singer here. I was like, take it away, Evan, I'll
- 43:57Speaker 1: take a break for an hour. You sing us a
- 44:01Speaker 1: little something.
- 44:04Speaker 7: And there's a mid July white tell in velvet read
- 44:10Speaker 7: as your old Chevrolet. And I was sixteen when yourected
- 44:18Speaker 7: and when we're lucky both walked away. You could say
- 44:26Speaker 7: were scrape out a living.
- 44:31Speaker 1: The work for which you've been born.
- 44:36Speaker 7: You were quick with a live fan forgiving, and tied
- 44:42Speaker 7: hard and fast to the horns. We had kelpies and
- 44:48Speaker 7: good quarter horses. We had a week pasture yearlings tied down.
- 44:57Speaker 7: You learned pain is the prize, serve admission. You're never
- 45:04Speaker 7: done paying it.
- 45:05Speaker 2: Down back on the Red River.
- 45:12Speaker 3: Not hard to.
- 45:14Speaker 7: Remember when you Daddy would never get off. I saw
- 45:22Speaker 7: the world from the bone your shoulders.
- 45:26Speaker 2: I remember you.
- 45:28Speaker 7: When you live like we do, Death doesly with the
- 45:34Speaker 7: beastbart On days off could help out our neighbors, for
- 45:45Speaker 7: we worked and sweated for free, and you learned every
- 45:52Speaker 7: dream with your labor.
- 45:56Speaker 2: And I'd sleep on your front seat.
- 46:01Speaker 7: And you'd call it cure for a snake bite. You
- 46:07Speaker 7: reach for fifth old crowl Some medicine should get your
- 46:15Speaker 7: head right when the symptoms to start to show. Back
- 46:26Speaker 7: on the Red River, not hard to remember when you
- 46:31Speaker 7: Daddy would never get old. L saw world from the.
- 46:39Speaker 2: Bone your shoulders. I remember the view.
- 46:44Speaker 7: When you live like we do, death does leave with
- 46:49Speaker 7: the best party. How the cars lined up down the
- 47:25Speaker 7: driveway haven't really been gone two years night beyond my
- 47:34Speaker 7: third On a good day down the last bottle. It's
- 47:44Speaker 7: Saturday started without you, and I knew before.
- 47:50Speaker 1: I got the car.
- 47:54Speaker 7: Alaridge. July bucks are in Vail. I tell you all
- 48:01Speaker 7: abouttle this fall from back on the Red River.

- 48:19Speaker 7: world from my bone, your shoulders, I remember.
- 48:25Speaker 4: You when you live like we do.
- 48:29Speaker 7: Death doesn't me with the best party. You gotta look
- 48:34Speaker 7: at the world from my bone, your shoulders, and I
- 48:43Speaker 7: remember the view when you live like we do. Death
- 48:48Speaker 7: doesn't me with the best party.
- 49:01Speaker 1: All right, man, it's good, I thinks soon, all right,
- 49:07Speaker 1: catch them when they head out on the road Turnpike.
- 49:10Speaker 1: Troubadour is heading out when I think.
- 49:12Speaker 2: In July, it's in July.
- 49:13Speaker 1: Coming up, Yeah, coming up. Okay. Oh, there's the thing
- 49:15Speaker 1: I gotta I gotta do my own little deal here.

- 49:32Speaker 1: lesson whatever comes out in the beginning. I've done them.

- 49:40Speaker 1: and wildlife. According to Clay, Act two is for your kids.
- 49:44Speaker 1: We start building that we find animals that have like
- 49:46Speaker 1: a wide, wide array of vocalizations, and we start laying
- 49:50Speaker 1: in the vocalizations, like real recordings of real animals doing vocalizations,
- 49:54Speaker 1: and we start giving clues until you build up to
- 49:57Speaker 1: where kids guess them. So if you kids are real smart,
- 50:00Speaker 1: he'll guess it right away. If you needs help, he'll
- 50:01Speaker 1: take them while to guests, you can tell it's a
- 50:02Speaker 1: way to suss out how well are you kids doing?
- 50:05Speaker 1: In is that outdoor education? Then three it's kids Trivia,
- 50:09Speaker 1: So kids are gang of kids doing kids trivia. The
- 50:12Speaker 1: objective is to for them to work together to work
- 50:17Speaker 1: up a pot of money which goes to a conservation
- 50:20Speaker 1: outdoor conservation group that benefits kids. So that that's the
