- 0:29Speaker 1: Welcome to Table Talk here at the Philadelphia Sports Table
- 0:31Speaker 1: podcast show, the longest running weekly Philly sports podcast show in.
- 0:35Speaker 2: The world, twelve years strong.
- 0:37Speaker 1: It is the college football season, so many great storylines
- 0:40Speaker 1: to get into him. We've got a great discussion coming
- 0:43Speaker 1: your way on Table Talk this week. We've got one
- 0:44Speaker 1: of our really good friends from Fansided, one of the
- 0:47Speaker 1: lead writers over there. He's been on the show a
- 0:50Speaker 1: number of times, mister John vial Er. Funny, how you
- 0:52Speaker 1: doing and thanks so much for joining us.
- 0:55Speaker 3: Good to be here, Jeff, glad to see you. Anna
- 0:58Speaker 3: Falcons gotta win on Sunday. There you go, deal with
- 1:01Speaker 3: the fact that George should not get it done on
- 1:02Speaker 3: Saturday night.
- 1:03Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 1:04Speaker 1: You're down south, you know you follow some of these
- 1:07Speaker 1: more southern teams. I know George is your team in
- 1:09Speaker 1: college football. We're gonna get to that in a bit here, John,
- 1:12Speaker 1: But I first wanted to start off our discussion, wanted
- 1:16Speaker 1: to get into my team here, the Penn State Nitney Lyons,
- 1:19Speaker 1: who just dropped their first loss of the season to Oregon.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Hopefully it's their only loss this season. But I'm not
- 1:24Speaker 1: gonna hold out hope and I'm not gonna hold my
- 1:26Speaker 1: breath here. I swear it's like every year, a lot
- 1:30Speaker 1: of us Penn State fans, John, we always have high
- 1:33Speaker 1: hopes coming into these games, but at the end of
- 1:35Speaker 1: the day, frankly, a lot of us just weren't surprised
- 1:39Speaker 1: how this all turned out in the end. These are
- 1:41Speaker 1: some really good Penn State teams that we've seen over
- 1:44Speaker 1: the years, but they just have trouble beating top ten
- 1:47Speaker 1: ranked teams like Oregon, like Ohio State, which I think
- 1:50Speaker 1: is probably going to be their second loss of the season.
- 1:53Speaker 1: It's just an ongoing theme here.
- 1:55Speaker 2: You know.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Chris Landers over at Fan Sided, one of your colleagues
- 2:00Speaker 1: an interesting story on James Franklin and the quote, hell
- 2:04Speaker 1: that is the Penn State football program that we're all
- 2:07Speaker 1: currently in here, just in terms of the floor and
- 2:10Speaker 1: the ceiling with this team. Dear lord, I want to
- 2:13Speaker 1: get your thoughts as we start off this discussion, thoughts
- 2:15Speaker 1: on the Penn State Oregon game and your overall thoughts
- 2:18Speaker 1: on the Penn State football program at this point and
- 2:20Speaker 1: we're looking again at a what I believe is probably
- 2:23Speaker 1: going to be a two lost team this year.
- 2:26Speaker 2: Once again, what are your thoughts, buddy?
- 2:29Speaker 3: A lot of question, but I can right here. It's
- 2:34Speaker 3: just it's the Jams Franklin of it all.
- 2:36Speaker 2: I would be with the.
- 2:37Speaker 3: Mark Ric experience there in Athens, so I empathize with
- 2:40Speaker 3: what's going on there in Happy Valley. Look, I was
- 2:45Speaker 3: I picked Oregon to win the game coming in. I
- 2:48Speaker 3: thought that the Docs are playing very well under Dan Lanning.
- 2:51Speaker 3: They took that loss to Ohio State and Rose Bull personally,
- 2:55Speaker 3: and I'm like, Wow, Oregon's tough. I didn't think I'd
- 2:58Speaker 3: ever say that in a sentence before, but looking at
- 3:01Speaker 3: looking at Penn State here, you've got all the talent
- 3:04Speaker 3: in the world. I mean, maybe not at every scoop
- 3:06Speaker 3: position or have a position on the field, but like
- 3:08Speaker 3: certainly enough to go on a deep playoff run. The
- 3:11Speaker 3: concern is, you know, I think this team's kind of
- 3:14Speaker 3: poorly coached. I James Franklin, like, if we're gonna do
- 3:18Speaker 3: a point with him where like he's got to make
- 3:20Speaker 3: it happen or not. I know, I know Jim Knowles
- 3:23Speaker 3: is a fantastic defensive coordinator. He's new. I'm a little
- 3:26Speaker 3: concerned with Andy Coldenecky on offense, and when's Drew Aller
- 3:30Speaker 3: going to be better, Like, I know he's got to
- 3:32Speaker 3: be I think he's a better version of J. J. McCarthy.
- 3:36Speaker 3: But honestly, you see what both Privyla is doing there
- 3:39Speaker 3: at Miszoo, and you kind of wonder like we picked
- 3:41Speaker 3: the wrong guy.
- 3:41Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I I I don't think Drew Aller is
- 3:46Speaker 1: going to be the I'll say this right now, just
- 3:48Speaker 1: in conversations I've had behind the scenes with friends even
- 3:50Speaker 1: family members, Drew Aler going to the NFL, I'm not
- 3:54Speaker 1: sure if that's really going to necessarily be an experiment
- 3:56Speaker 1: that's going to work.
- 3:57Speaker 2: I we see him in these big.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Time situations, whether it was twenty twenty four season, how
- 4:03Speaker 1: that ended with an interception. We see this game it
- 4:07Speaker 1: ends on an interception in overtime. I love the kid,
- 4:10Speaker 1: I do, but I just don't think Drew Aller is
- 4:13Speaker 1: the guy necessarily even to get this team to a
- 4:16Speaker 1: national championship. But I want to dive into your team
- 4:20Speaker 1: that you follow, that you are very very in tune with,
- 4:24Speaker 1: and that is Georgia. Here. It's really amazing to me
- 4:28Speaker 1: how Georgia, because of their recruiting, because of the talent
- 4:31Speaker 1: they have, just really hasn't looked like a real true
- 4:36Speaker 1: SEC powerhouse in terms of a top five team that
- 4:38Speaker 1: we've seen in the past. I mean, they just dropped
- 4:41Speaker 1: this past week's game to Alabama and that could actually
- 4:45Speaker 1: have some college football playoff implications down the road. John, So,
- 4:49Speaker 1: what are your thoughts on what we've been seeing from
- 4:51Speaker 1: Georgia thus far this season and can they really be
- 4:54Speaker 1: a force within the college football playoff bracket? What are
- 4:57Speaker 1: your thoughts here?
- 4:58Speaker 3: I'm so tired of losey Dalli. I'm so sorry. It's
- 5:02Speaker 3: like Ohio State.
- 5:03Speaker 2: It's like Ohio State.
- 5:04Speaker 3: Ye, it's hammer versus nail. Georgia and Penn State are
- 5:07Speaker 3: one of the same. Yeah for like and again, the
- 5:11Speaker 3: same sort of issue applies. Kirby Smart's a fantastic head coach.
- 5:14Speaker 3: I think anybody who follows college football knows that to
- 5:17Speaker 3: be true. The problem is he has two absolute stooges
- 5:20Speaker 3: for his coordinators. Mike Bobo just because he was best
- 5:23Speaker 3: friends with him back in ninety six doesn't mean he
- 5:25Speaker 3: should be calling plays. I don't care that his son's
- 5:27Speaker 3: the center, I don't care. And Jwn Schumann's my age.
- 5:31Speaker 3: He's been at the program for ten years. What's the
- 5:33Speaker 3: point he's like Thomas mccowski from Office Space, what exactly
- 5:38Speaker 3: do you do here? And like I said, George's got
- 5:42Speaker 3: plenty of talent there. I think FPI favors Georgia a
- 5:44Speaker 3: little bit more than Penn State to make the playoff.
- 5:47Speaker 3: But like what I've seen out of the dogs, like
- 5:50Speaker 3: maybe you can win a seven and ten home game,
- 5:53Speaker 3: but like you're not going to get past Oregon, You're
- 5:56Speaker 3: not going to get past Ohio State, You're not going
- 5:58Speaker 3: to get passed. I'm not looking forward to facing go
- 6:00Speaker 3: adminislator on this season.
- 6:01Speaker 1: That's scary, right, I mean when it comes to the
- 6:06Speaker 1: offense really quick, just because you know, I've always I've
- 6:09Speaker 1: always found Georgia to be fascinating in terms of their offense.
- 6:13Speaker 1: Is it more trouble with and not that they're necessarily
- 6:15Speaker 1: having trouble, but are you finding that the passing game,
- 6:19Speaker 1: the running game is like really kind of lacking the
- 6:22Speaker 1: type of you know, panaje, I think that maybe we've
- 6:25Speaker 1: seen in the past. Is are you seeing that at all? Really?
- 6:29Speaker 3: The big thing is the reason George has got two
- 6:31Speaker 3: national championships is because Todd Monikan was our offensive coordinated
- 6:34Speaker 3: for three years. That guy's yeah, I mean, he may
- 6:37Speaker 3: he may be regretting going to Baltimore now because of
- 6:40Speaker 3: the Lamar Jackson of it all. But I will say,
- 6:43Speaker 3: like there is not really Uh it doesn't set itself up.
- 6:47Speaker 3: I mean there's there's times in the game where when
- 6:49Speaker 3: Bobo calls running plays looks fantastic. George is a its
- 6:52Speaker 3: best when we turned the football, He's got some really
- 6:54Speaker 3: interesting designs there from a passing standpoint, and the gutters, Dagan,
- 6:58Speaker 3: you can make all the throws. He's not really been
- 7:00Speaker 3: the problem.
- 7:01Speaker 2: Uh.
- 7:01Speaker 3: The issue is kind of like again, George's receivers drop everything.
- 7:05Speaker 3: There's just not really been. I mean I've been a
- 7:07Speaker 3: Georgia fan since I went there in eight Like we've
- 7:10Speaker 3: only really had three truly special receivers maybe four now
- 7:13Speaker 3: it's Zach ryat Branch, But like outside of aj Green,
- 7:17Speaker 3: Lat McConkey and George Pickens, it's like that's the part
- 7:20Speaker 3: of the team where it just I just don't trust
- 7:22Speaker 3: that unit. Like I could have had that go ahead
- 7:24Speaker 3: score with the freshmound blanking On's name. It's just it's
- 7:30Speaker 3: it's mad ning. You know, I'm done. I'm done with Bubba.
- 7:32Speaker 3: I want to get somebody else in here.
- 7:35Speaker 1: We feel that at Penn stayed a lot with certain
- 7:37Speaker 1: coaching staff members as well. But look, before we go
- 7:42Speaker 1: to our first break here, I wanted to get into
- 7:45Speaker 1: the quarterback position in college football in general because we're
- 7:48Speaker 1: always looking at and assessing this this quarterback scene, and
- 7:53Speaker 1: it changes throughout the course of a college football season.
- 7:56Speaker 1: I mean, coming into this season, Arch Manning, I mean, wow,
- 7:59Speaker 1: you talk about some guy who had a ceiling possibly
- 8:02Speaker 1: because of his last name being Manning, and boy, he
- 8:04Speaker 1: has certainly dropped in terms of favorability within the college
- 8:08Speaker 1: football ranks at the quarterback position. Marcel Reid from Texas
- 8:13Speaker 1: A and m We're certainly keeping our eyes on him.
- 8:15Speaker 1: He's been doing some good stuff this year. Carson Beck,
- 8:17Speaker 1: even from Miami. I mean, he's intriguing. I didn't necessarily
- 8:21Speaker 1: think Carson Beck would be as intriguing as he is,
- 8:24Speaker 1: And maybe NFL scouts are taking a look at him
- 8:26Speaker 1: and saying, oh, is he is he professional football material? Here,
- 8:31Speaker 1: I'm wondering, John, how are you seeing the quarterback landscape
- 8:34Speaker 1: really taking shape? As there are gonna be some of
- 8:37Speaker 1: these NFL teams are gonna need that quarterback help in
- 8:39Speaker 1: the future. After the twenty twenty six NFL Draft. What
- 8:42Speaker 1: are your thoughts here about the quarterback class.
- 8:44Speaker 3: I'm really glad I've got Michael Pennocks junior in Atlanta
- 8:47Speaker 3: and you've got a Jailer Hurts in Philadelphia. Yeah, this
- 8:49Speaker 3: is not this is not the year to get a quarterback, right,
- 8:51Speaker 3: and we thought it was.
- 8:53Speaker 2: It was last year.
- 8:56Speaker 3: All right, I'll try to pack unpack this as ye
- 8:59Speaker 3: as I can. Okay, I thought there was like six
- 9:01Speaker 3: quarterbacks that had like first round grades coming in. I
- 9:04Speaker 3: know you mentioned Reid. I know you mentioned Beck Reid.
- 9:07Speaker 3: I got to see him develop more as a passer.
- 9:08Speaker 3: But he's in a great situation there with Elgo as
- 9:11Speaker 3: his coach and calling Klin's like, hey go be me
- 9:14Speaker 3: at k State either. I think that works that well.
- 9:17Speaker 3: I've looked through the Carson Beck experience. He's thriving in
- 9:20Speaker 3: Shannon Dawson's offense. He's got all the starts in the world.
- 9:23Speaker 3: He'll have an opportunity the NFL. I just don't know
- 9:25Speaker 3: if he throws the most catchable ball. That's kind of
- 9:27Speaker 3: like what leads the incompletions interceptions. But again, Beck could
- 9:30Speaker 3: do what cam Ward did potentially We'll see what happens there.
- 9:34Speaker 3: As far as like quarterbacks that I thought were going
- 9:36Speaker 3: to be first round picks, I thought Drew Allen for sure.
- 9:39Speaker 3: It really comes down to like the right team at
- 9:41Speaker 3: this point. Maybe it's Cleveland. Kay Klubnick has been a
- 9:44Speaker 3: disaster with Clemson, Yes, and then honestly, Garrett Nesmeyer kind
- 9:49Speaker 3: of a complainer. I understand that he's hurt, but like
- 9:52Speaker 3: on the Matthew Stafford of Blake Bortles scale, he's probably
- 9:55Speaker 3: closer to Bortles, and that's not what you want. As
- 9:57Speaker 3: far as who may you may look at, I still
- 10:00Speaker 3: I think Lenorra Sellers is the most talented guy there
- 10:02Speaker 3: at South Carolina. Yeah, again, he made return, but Mike
- 10:05Speaker 3: Schule has been a terrible oc hire to place stow
- 10:07Speaker 3: log ends. I really like Fernanda Mendoza at Indiana. Yeah,
- 10:11Speaker 3: but again, his brother Alberto is on the team, so
- 10:13Speaker 3: maybe he was to exhaust his eligibility playing for coach
- 10:16Speaker 3: sig Why not John Mattier a guy a lot of
- 10:19Speaker 3: people like. I think he's a little small, maybe injury
- 10:23Speaker 3: pron My problem is he's a little too reckless. So
- 10:26Speaker 3: if I had it, if if you had it, if
- 10:28Speaker 3: you had to tell me who I want to take.
- 10:30Speaker 3: I would take sellers, but I think Mendoz is the
- 10:32Speaker 3: big one to watch right now.
- 10:33Speaker 1: All right, very good again, folks. We're talking to John
- 10:35Speaker 1: Bueller from fan Sided, one of the lead writers over

- 10:50Speaker 3: one point eighteen. You know, I've got all my stuff there.
- 10:52Speaker 3: I'm writing out a bunch of college sites now as
- 10:54Speaker 3: opposed to the main flagship sites. So I write a
- 10:57Speaker 3: lot about Georgia, Wisconsin. Now I get both. I get
- 11:00Speaker 3: this side of the coin ad Time Terrible Team.
- 11:02Speaker 2: Yep.
- 11:02Speaker 3: It's all on a Facebook page there. It's all on Twitter,

- 11:43Speaker 1: So that good for him, Good for him. But absolutely
- 11:48Speaker 1: he was like, I am tired of this. We've been
- 11:51Speaker 1: doing it for so many years. This is nonsense. I'm
- 11:54Speaker 1: stopping so and he's been so happy, he's been happy. John,
- 11:58Speaker 1: I gotta tell you, I wish I could do it.
- 12:00Speaker 1: I can't, though I can't.
- 12:03Speaker 3: We just dig pay Jeff.
- 12:05Speaker 1: Exactly exactly, folks. We're gonna take a break and we
- 12:08Speaker 1: get back. We got more college football talk coming your way.
- 12:11Speaker 1: Stick with us, all right, We are back and again.
- 12:15Speaker 1: Talking to our friend John Buehler from fan Sided. Great
- 12:18Speaker 1: great content over at fansided dot com and all their
- 12:22Speaker 1: other sites as well.
- 12:24Speaker 2: I really want to.
- 12:25Speaker 1: Get into now after this break here. You know a
- 12:28Speaker 1: team that has kind of surprised me here this season.
- 12:31Speaker 1: Maybe they shouldn't have, But I think we need to
- 12:35Speaker 1: realize that Old Miss really is a team that's on
- 12:38Speaker 1: the rise. And it pains me because of how much
- 12:41Speaker 1: dislike I have for Lane Kiffen and for so many
- 12:44Speaker 1: years with Old Miss. Man, I think they really could
- 12:47Speaker 1: make a run at the college football championship this year. John,
- 12:51Speaker 1: I'm wondering if you believe so as well from what
- 12:53Speaker 1: you've seen. What are your thoughts on what we've seen
- 12:56Speaker 1: from Old Miss thus far? Do you think they're championship
- 12:59Speaker 1: cal burmastute material?
- 13:01Speaker 3: Here through five weeks of the best team of the SEC,
- 13:04Speaker 3: and I don't think it's close.
- 13:05Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 13:06Speaker 3: I know you despise Lane Kiffin and I'm probably going
- 13:09Speaker 3: to here in a couple of weeks when he comes
- 13:10Speaker 3: to Athens. But like the dudes in his bag, he's
- 13:14Speaker 3: really feeling. He's calling a lot of great plays. He's
- 13:16Speaker 3: really leveled up as a coach. He's grown up a
- 13:19Speaker 3: lot since dinner. That's kind of how he is.
- 13:20Speaker 2: Oh yeah, but.
- 13:21Speaker 3: I will say this, what's really important is he's got
- 13:24Speaker 3: great coaches on the staff. Charlie Weis junior, He's a
- 13:26Speaker 3: future head coach. Pete Golding's approven SEC commodity there at
- 13:32Speaker 3: defensive cordator. My former quarterback Joe Cox is on the
- 13:35Speaker 3: staff too. It's again coaching matters. And I also think
- 13:39Speaker 3: with Old Miss like they have the stones to pivot
- 13:42Speaker 3: off Austin Simmons in favor of Trinidad Chambliss the fair
- 13:46Speaker 3: estate transfer. I mean, this guy was on my heisman
- 13:48Speaker 3: ballot if I had one, he'd be number two right
- 13:50Speaker 3: now behind Dante More And I think with Chamblis at quarterback,
- 13:54Speaker 3: he's giving the Rebels all sorts of confidence in all
- 13:57Speaker 3: three phases to go out there. You see the plans
- 14:00Speaker 3: defense flying around there versus Ealisu winning a crucial game
- 14:03Speaker 3: in Magnoia. And I didn't think Ole Miss to make
- 14:06Speaker 3: the playoffs this past in the offseason because they had
- 14:09Speaker 3: a very favorable schedule. I think it's them Tennessee and
- 14:11Speaker 3: Miszoo and I'm blanking on the fourth team that had
- 14:14Speaker 3: like the fourth easiest schedule of the SEC relatively speaking.
- 14:17Speaker 3: But if they go ten and two, like they can
- 14:20Speaker 3: get to Atlanta. They they've never been to Atlanta since
- 14:23Speaker 3: they've had an SEC championship. If you win that game,
- 14:25Speaker 3: you get a first round by FPI over there on
- 14:28Speaker 3: ESPN grades them very favorably. My concern with ole Miss
- 14:32Speaker 3: is the same thing I have with Indiana. I just
- 14:35Speaker 3: don't think that they recrew well enough out of high school.
- 14:37Speaker 3: They do well in the portal. And even if you
- 14:40Speaker 3: have great teams like this and ole Miss in Indiana,
- 14:42Speaker 3: you got to win three games against a bunch of
- 14:44Speaker 3: really good teams to win the playoff. And look, as
- 14:46Speaker 3: an Atlanta fan, as a Philadelphia fan, all we've all
- 14:49Speaker 3: seen teams before that were a lot of fun, but
- 14:52Speaker 3: at the end of the day, we knew weren't gonna
- 14:53Speaker 3: win it all. The ninety eight Falcons weren't going to
- 14:55Speaker 3: win the Super Bowl, twenty fourteen fifteen Hawks weren't going
- 14:58Speaker 3: to win the NBA Championship. I mean, I'm trying to
- 15:01Speaker 3: think would be an example Affilly, like maybe the one
- 15:03Speaker 3: six series, like you gotta beat Kobe and Shack absolute
- 15:06Speaker 3: seven times through, but like Olmos has like a national
- 15:11Speaker 3: semifinal ceiling. If they get a lucky break, maybe they
- 15:14Speaker 3: get to the title bout. But uh, I mean maybe
- 15:17Speaker 3: it's like maybe it goes like TCU a couple of
- 15:18Speaker 3: years ago. I'm not saying they're gonna get blown out,
- 15:20Speaker 3: but there is a ceiling there with all miss but
- 15:22Speaker 3: this is still a really good football team.
- 15:23Speaker 1: Something you mentioned and I didn't plan on bringing it up,
- 15:26Speaker 1: but I think it's so noteworthy, John, is that you know,
- 15:30Speaker 1: whether it's Lane Kiffin or whether it's another college football
- 15:32Speaker 1: program and head coach, is how the coordinators all mesh
- 15:35Speaker 1: with each other and the head coach too to then
- 15:38Speaker 1: inevitably get this productive product on the field. And I think,
- 15:42Speaker 1: like we've tried to dissect it so much over the
- 15:45Speaker 1: years on this podcast platform, and inevitably, I think it
- 15:48Speaker 1: really comes down to relationships, whether it's coaching relationships with
- 15:51Speaker 1: each other, understanding and gelling and it's something you can't teach,
- 15:56Speaker 1: and then the relationship with the players on the field,
- 15:59Speaker 1: how that manifests itself I should say off the field,
- 16:02Speaker 1: and then it manifests itself on the field. Relationships are
- 16:05Speaker 1: just everything in life in general, but in the sports world,
- 16:08Speaker 1: I think it's that much more important for teams to
- 16:12Speaker 1: see success. And it's just it's always astonishing to me
- 16:16Speaker 1: how you can have coordinators and coaches who are not
- 16:18Speaker 1: successful in certain situations, but then they move to another
- 16:21Speaker 1: situation and it's like, my gosh, they are geniuses, and
- 16:25Speaker 1: it's like, well, why weren't they doing this in other
- 16:27Speaker 1: locations and other cities and other towns and other colleges.
- 16:31Speaker 1: And you say to yourself, well, it's the relationships at
- 16:33Speaker 1: the end of the day. I mean, I think that's
- 16:34Speaker 1: a big part of it. I don't know what are
- 16:36Speaker 1: your thoughts.
- 16:37Speaker 3: That's a great point the you know, Golden for example,
- 16:40Speaker 3: they wanted to run him out of town in Tuscalosive. Yeah,
- 16:42Speaker 3: they thought he was the guy that brought the end
- 16:44Speaker 3: of the Saban dynasty in Great Alabama, and he's just
- 16:47Speaker 3: found a much easier place to I mean, all this
- 16:50Speaker 3: is kind of operating out of the zenis right now.
- 16:52Speaker 3: I don't know how much further they can go. Maybe
- 16:54Speaker 3: they'd get to like Johnny Vaught era the late fifties
- 16:57Speaker 3: and stuff like that. But you look at Ohio State,
- 17:00Speaker 3: like everybody thought, everybody paying the Matt Patricia higher that
- 17:03Speaker 3: seems to be working out. You want to you want
- 17:05Speaker 3: to settle. Most people don't do that. The problem is
- 17:08Speaker 3: Brian Hartline can call plays and that's going to cost
- 17:11Speaker 3: the Buckeyes potentially a chance at repeating. So it all
- 17:15Speaker 3: comes down to coordators, you know, in coaching staff. I
- 17:18Speaker 3: mean I wonder. I wonder with Texas, like you know,
- 17:21Speaker 3: Kwaikowski's got the defense going. I don't know what aj
- 17:23Speaker 3: Milby does behind Steve Sarkisian. That's why I'm not really
- 17:26Speaker 3: high on Texas right now.
- 17:28Speaker 1: Yeah, Yeah, it's interesting to think about these relationships what
- 17:31Speaker 1: they mean when coaches are going from team to team,
- 17:33Speaker 1: city to city, and college program to college programs. So, look,
- 17:37Speaker 1: as we're as we're kind of finishing up our discussion,
- 17:39Speaker 1: wanted to talk about some underrated teams, some overrated teams
- 17:43Speaker 1: within the college football scene. Let's first get into some
- 17:45Speaker 1: underrated teams here. I personally think that Missouri is going
- 17:51Speaker 1: to be more and more of a force as the
- 17:54Speaker 1: season progresses, and I think there's an argument to be
- 17:56Speaker 1: made that they are actually ranked too low at number
- 17:58Speaker 1: nineteen in the country. As we're recording this year, John,
- 18:02Speaker 1: I'm wondering, who have been a couple of perhaps teams
- 18:06Speaker 1: that have been most surprising to you in college football
- 18:10Speaker 1: this year, Maybe some teams that might be ranked a
- 18:13Speaker 1: little too low, maybe not ranked at all.
- 18:15Speaker 2: Who are some of those underrated teams for you, buddy, to.
- 18:18Speaker 3: Bring up a great point with Missouri. Like I said,
- 18:22Speaker 3: every league has like a comparative in another league. Yeah,
- 18:25Speaker 3: Missouri and North Carolina State are kind of one of
- 18:27Speaker 3: the same. The as soon as you like buy into
- 18:30Speaker 3: Missoo or in c State, they always just appoint disappoint
- 18:33Speaker 3: whenever you like, don't think anything about them. They always
- 18:37Speaker 3: exceed expectations, right, Uh both. Privula has really added a
- 18:42Speaker 3: lot to the Tigers offense. They're massive upgrade over Brady Cook.
- 18:47Speaker 3: I think getting the head case Diva Luther Burn the
- 18:49Speaker 3: third out of the out of building is a huge help. Uh.
- 18:53Speaker 3: You had to overcome losing Blake Baker to LSU. That's
- 18:56Speaker 3: not easy. Yeah, And I think the big question with
- 18:59Speaker 3: Miszoo is like how long I'm gonna go to keep
- 19:00Speaker 3: Eli Drinkwitz because there are potentially three sec jobs that
- 19:04Speaker 3: could open up that he might take. He might take Florida.
- 19:06Speaker 3: I wouldn't go there personally. I think that place is
- 19:08Speaker 3: a disaster. He is from Arkansas. Do you turn heel
- 19:11Speaker 3: in battle line? Right? The job that he really wants though,
- 19:14Speaker 3: that's Auburn because he was on a Chiswicks staff under
- 19:17Speaker 3: Malazon and everything like that. Also, another great coordinator in
- 19:21Speaker 3: Malazon there at Florida State outside of Miszoo. I mean,
- 19:25Speaker 3: they have a really soft schedule, probably the easiest in
- 19:27Speaker 3: the SEC. That's kind of why I think no one's
- 19:29Speaker 3: giving them the benefit of the doubt. But they could
- 19:31Speaker 3: beat Bama, they could beat Oklahoma.
- 19:33Speaker 2: I think, so.
- 19:34Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, this is a team that I thought was
- 19:36Speaker 3: going to go nine and three. But I also don't
- 19:38Speaker 3: think I had them winning the Border War versus Kansas.
- 19:41Speaker 3: And if I got to go throw another team out there,
- 19:43Speaker 3: I've been pretty impressed with Memphis out of the group
- 19:45Speaker 3: of five, and then in the Big twelve, b Yu
- 19:48Speaker 3: is not going away. They lost Jake, they lost Jake
- 19:51Speaker 3: Gretz laugh just kind of show goes to show how
- 19:53Speaker 3: good of a coach Kalani Sataki is there in Provo.
- 19:56Speaker 2: And I think Ryan.
- 19:57Speaker 3: Silverfield's getting ready for another job. And if if not
- 20:00Speaker 3: for Justin Flinte, he'd be the perfect higher there in Blacksburg,
- 20:03Speaker 3: but they won't hire him for that reason.
- 20:04Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 20:05Speaker 1: Absolutely, Oh my gosh, Well, leg let's head in head
- 20:08Speaker 1: over to the overrated teams here, because look, I mean,
- 20:11Speaker 1: you mentioned Oklahoma. Pretty good football team, pretty good football team,
- 20:14Speaker 1: but I'm not so sure that they're actually a top
- 20:16Speaker 1: five team when you take a look at this team
- 20:20Speaker 1: in detail, when you look at this team under the hood,
- 20:22Speaker 1: I'm not sure that they are a top five team. Look,
- 20:25Speaker 1: there are also folks that talk about Penn State too.
- 20:28Speaker 1: I think Penn State dropped to number six or I'm
- 20:31Speaker 1: number seven. I'm sorry, And you know there are people saying,
- 20:34Speaker 1: you know what, maybe a little overrated for number seven
- 20:37Speaker 1: in the nation at this point after the loss to Oregon.
- 20:39Speaker 1: Are there a couple teams that you think are way
- 20:41Speaker 1: too overrated for what they're ranked at this point in
- 20:44Speaker 1: the season, John.
- 20:46Speaker 3: I'll start with the Penn State of all, just to
- 20:48Speaker 3: give the South away, Okay, I think I think Penn
- 20:50Speaker 3: State is going to be a top three to five
- 20:52Speaker 3: team in the Big Ten. They'll be ab and flow
- 20:55Speaker 3: to that. I think Indiana is really good, but like
- 20:57Speaker 3: if you're in that three to five range, you're in
- 20:59Speaker 3: the playoff mix. I don't buy into USC at all,
- 21:02Speaker 3: not really buying into Michigan. I think Illinois just got
- 21:05Speaker 3: his clock cleaned by Indiana. I think I think the
- 21:08Speaker 3: line I are pretty good, so I'm not too concerned
- 21:11Speaker 3: about Penn State here. I think there's four teams in
- 21:13Speaker 3: the SEC that are grossly over it. Okay, that would
- 21:18Speaker 3: be Oklahoma, that would be Texas, that would be Texas,
- 21:20Speaker 3: A and M, and that would be LSU. I think
- 21:22Speaker 3: that Oklahoma. You beat Michigan like I knew you were
- 21:27Speaker 3: going to. Sharan Moore is not going to win that
- 21:29Speaker 3: game at his alma mater. John Mateers played well. He
- 21:32Speaker 3: does turn the ball over. I understand he's hurt. He's
- 21:35Speaker 3: going to miss the Kent State game. If you win
- 21:37Speaker 3: red River, you know. I'll give Oklahoma their props. But
- 21:39Speaker 3: they've got They've got the hardest schedule in the SEC
- 21:42Speaker 3: outside of Florida. They got to play so many tough teams.
- 21:45Speaker 3: Don't really trust Brint Vinables at Brent R Buckles all right,
- 21:48Speaker 3: been r Buckles as good as as it can be.
- 21:50Speaker 3: Like they may be able to overcome this. They might
- 21:52Speaker 3: be the only nine to three team that makes the
- 21:54Speaker 3: playoffs this year if it comes to that. Again. I've
- 21:57Speaker 3: mentioned Texas. Don't trust arch Manning. Don't think they're going
- 22:00Speaker 3: to beat Georgia between the hedges. Yeah, I don't know
- 22:02Speaker 3: if they're going to bet A and M. Don't trust
- 22:04Speaker 3: A and M. Yeah, I interviewed. I interviewed Jesse Palmer
- 22:06Speaker 3: back in the day and he said, don't ever trust
- 22:09Speaker 3: Texas A and m under any circumstance. And I've taken
- 22:12Speaker 3: that to heart. And as far as LSU is concerned,
- 22:16Speaker 3: Brian Kelly is kind of it's like him in Lincoln Riley, like,
- 22:20Speaker 3: what are we doing Hereah? Yeah, I feel bad because
- 22:24Speaker 3: they finally got a defense there, but no, Smyer is
- 22:26Speaker 3: not healthy and you really need to win Magnolia there.
- 22:30Speaker 3: So I will say, of those four teams in Oklahoma,
- 22:33Speaker 3: Texas A, and LSU in Texas, maybe one of them
- 22:37Speaker 3: makes the playoff. I would probably I'd be much more
- 22:40Speaker 3: likely to take Oklahoma, Alabama and Georgia over any of that.
- 22:43Speaker 1: It's interesting to it's interesting to witness what has been
- 22:46Speaker 1: happening with the SEC in terms of powerhouse teams, in
- 22:49Speaker 1: terms of the conference in general. Interesting for sure, and
