- 0:10what is going on everybody welcome
- 0:32To the Clydesdale Media Podcast,
- 0:35our interview series.
- 0:37My name is Scott Switz from
- 0:38the Clydesdale.
- 0:39I have with me today, Jamie Latimer.
- 0:42And soon we'll have Jason Grubb with us.
- 0:46He's having a delivery come
- 0:48to his house just as we
- 0:49were getting started.
- 0:51He just needs a minute or
- 0:52two and he'll be hopping on with us.
- 0:55So...
- 0:56We're here.
- 0:57We're going to talk some master stuff.
- 0:59So before we, before Jason hops on,
- 1:02it was announced where
- 1:04masters is finally where
- 1:06it's going to be.
- 1:08Um, Birmingham, Alabama,
- 1:11Labor Day weekend.
- 1:14What are your thoughts?
- 1:17I mean, you know, my thoughts,
- 1:18I think that same as the teens is crazy,
- 1:23but
- 1:24Again, they, you know,
- 1:26they were obviously
- 1:27scrambling here at the end,
- 1:28having to sign something
- 1:29before the open started and
- 1:30they had to take what they could get.
- 1:31And at least it's out before
- 1:34the open and we have the
- 1:35information and we can do
- 1:37with it as we please at this point.
- 1:39Yeah.
- 1:43Well, first of all,
- 1:44I want to thank everybody
- 1:44in the chat for welcoming me back.
- 1:47This is kind of a test run.
- 1:49Jamie is my crutch.
- 1:51She's going to help me get
- 1:51through this interview.
- 1:53We're going to see how it goes.
- 1:54And that'll kind of depend
- 1:56on the schedule going forward.
- 2:00The biggest disappointment
- 2:01for me and our team is that
- 2:06we have been diving deep
- 2:07into teen and masters
- 2:09coverage this off season.
- 2:11And we're really geared up
- 2:13to kind of cover both this off season.
- 2:17And I feel like,
- 2:18I feel like CrossFit and
- 2:21legends and the powers that
- 2:23be didn't really think
- 2:25about the media aspect of
- 2:27having these two events on
- 2:29the same weekend.
- 2:32Yeah.
- 2:32Yeah.
- 2:34Not only media,
- 2:35but like I said this on our
- 2:36Thursday night,
- 2:38it's the biggest shared
- 2:41pool of viewership, spectatorship,
- 2:44everything.
- 2:46You're cutting probably that
- 2:47in half for both venues,
- 2:49both live stream.
- 2:50You're making people choose
- 2:51which one they're going to cover.
- 2:54It's crazy to me.
- 2:57If you have a media team like you,
- 3:04Which one do you choose to go to?
- 3:05I mean,
- 3:07that's going to be the case for coaches,
- 3:10families, things like that too.
- 3:13Which one do you go to?
- 3:14What if you have a teen and
- 3:15a mom that both compete?
- 3:19Most,
- 3:21most third-party media companies are
- 3:24not big enough to split
- 3:27between the two events.
- 3:29Right.
- 3:30You might have a couple that can do that.
- 3:32We may try to do that,
- 3:36but we're going to see how
- 3:37it falls because it's going
- 3:39to be rough that these two
- 3:43major events that
- 3:45everybody's saying is they
- 3:47are the CrossFit Games.
- 3:48Like Bob even said on an
- 3:50interview recently, Bob with Legends,
- 3:54that he didn't care if
- 3:54Legends was in the name.
- 3:56Like, it is the CrossFit Games to them.
- 4:00And so...
- 4:03You have these CrossFit
- 4:03games that won't be able to
- 4:05be covered by everybody.
- 4:07It's going to be a master cluster.
- 4:08I don't know.
- 4:11We'll see.
- 4:13Oh, Corey, I hope you go.
- 4:15I hope you get on a team, Corey.
- 4:19I hope you're there.
- 4:23I'm not too tall to be your crutch.
- 4:24We're like the same height.
- 4:27Right here on my shoulder.
- 4:30saying that a male is your
- 4:32height is yeah and I'm sure
- 4:39you might have like a half
- 4:43inch I mean gory I don't
- 4:47know about that I think
- 4:51you're pretty much the same height but um
- 4:57It just was the biggest blow to me,
- 4:59probably this whole offseason,
- 5:01was finding out they were
- 5:02on the same weekend.
- 5:05You've also talked to me about,
- 5:09and we want to talk to Jason about this,
- 5:11but there's been some
- 5:13announcements about the kit.
- 5:16The apparel kit and maybe
- 5:18falling short of what you
- 5:20would get in the past.
- 5:23And I said to you,
- 5:25that sucks because that's
- 5:26what legitimizes a master's
- 5:28athlete as an elite athlete.
- 5:31Yeah.
- 5:31Post on Instagram in your games gear.
- 5:36it automatically gives you a
- 5:37legitimate legitimization
- 5:38that you can't get anywhere else.
- 5:41You don't have the name that
- 5:43Matt Frazier has or rich
- 5:45froning or those guys.
- 5:48Right.
- 5:51So you need these things to
- 5:53help you market yourself.
- 5:57Yeah.
- 5:57I mean, it's,
- 6:01we say this all the time
- 6:02it's not like all about the
- 6:03money the money isn't there
- 6:07in the team or in the
- 6:10masters as it is for for
- 6:13individuals it's not I mean
- 6:15it's nothing to shake a
- 6:18stick at like it's pretty
- 6:19decent especially in the 35
- 6:2139 but that's like one
- 6:23person is going to win a
- 6:24decent amount of money so the
- 6:27There's tons of athletes.
- 6:29You hear this all the time.
- 6:31And I know people say it's
- 6:32not the right mindset.
- 6:34But there's a big subset of
- 6:36athletes that are just
- 6:37trying to make it to the semis,
- 6:38just trying to get to the games.
- 6:40There's a lot of people who aren't like,
- 6:41I'm going and winning the games.
- 6:43That's a very, very few.
- 6:44Maybe your top 10 are saying that.
- 6:46Maybe a top 20 say it.
- 6:48But I think in their heart of hearts,
- 6:50they know they're just
- 6:50going to try to podium, try to be top 10.
- 6:54there's a big big big chunk
- 6:56of people who are just
- 6:57trying to get there and
- 6:58they're trying to get there
- 7:00for this kit and somewhat
- 7:03the notoriety but like that
- 7:05that is probably three
- 7:07grand worth of stuff six
- 7:10pairs of shoes six outfits
- 7:13uh a duffel bag a backpack
- 7:17oh an entire like weren't
- 7:18like you get a sweatshirt a
- 7:19zip up hoodie a whole warm-up set um
- 7:23Nice jacket.
- 7:26It's an insane amount of stuff.
- 7:28So much gear that, from my understanding,
- 7:33is being pulled.
- 7:35And, oh, there he is.
- 7:38Can I throw him in?
- 7:38I had to stage.
- 7:42There he is.
- 7:43Hey, guys.
- 7:44Well, well, well,
- 7:45the joys of home ownership, huh?
- 7:47So great.
- 7:47Yeah.
- 7:49Getting, I think we have,
- 7:51I think we just received
- 7:528,000 pounds of rock to move.
- 7:55So yeah, I got a job to do.
- 7:58It'll be fun.
- 8:00Thank God you crossed it.
- 8:02Thank God at CrossFit is correct.
- 8:06And I like to take on these
- 8:07big old huge projects from
- 8:09time to time that are just
- 8:10totally overwhelming at the
- 8:11wrong time of year.
- 8:12So that's what I've decided to do.
- 8:14And yeah,
- 8:15it all has to do with water
- 8:17management around this place.
- 8:19Did you know in Birmingham,
- 8:21Alabama gets more rain than Seattle,
- 8:24Washington?
- 8:28I did not know that.
- 8:29I did not know.
- 8:29Yes.
- 8:30No one knows that.
- 8:32Uh, it doesn't rain all the time,
- 8:33but when it rains, it's insane.
- 8:36Um, got it.
- 8:37So we are,
- 8:38are we back up to a mountain and
- 8:40there's a mountain of,
- 8:41there's still water that
- 8:42just kind of runs off that
- 8:43mountain for days,
- 8:46creates like small rivers in our yard.
- 8:48So we're creating a French drain and we're,
- 8:51it's love fun facts that Jason grew up.
- 8:54Um, so yeah, we are, uh,
- 8:57We're learning.
- 8:57And so anyway, it's a big old project.
- 8:59I rented an excavator.
- 9:01I've never used an excavator.
- 9:03So I've bitten off a big chunk here.
- 9:06Yeah.
- 9:08Well,
- 9:08that is awesome because you have
- 9:10nothing else else to do
- 9:11with your life with everything.
- 9:13I'm not that big.
- 9:13It's, it's, it's crazy.
- 9:16It's crazy.
- 9:17When the guy was like, Hey,
- 9:17I'm running 10 minutes late.
- 9:18I'm like, Oh man.
- 9:20Okay.
- 9:21Cause I have like two podcasts and a media,
- 9:23whatever Thursdays are my
- 9:24days to get things done.
- 9:26Um,
- 9:26it's a rest day from training or
- 9:28recovery day,
- 9:29which I'll still do something later, but,
- 9:31um, it frees me up in the mornings,
- 9:32but then that's when deliveries happen.
- 9:34Podcasts happen, all kinds of fun things.
- 9:36But, um,
- 9:38Scott, you're doing better?
- 9:40I'm doing better.
- 9:44I'll say that.
- 9:45Good.
- 9:46Today is test day for me.
- 9:49I have Jamie on with me as a crutch,
- 9:53so she can help me with
- 9:54this lift and see where we're at,
- 9:58if I can get back to doing
- 10:00full interviews or not.
- 10:02Totally.
- 10:03Totally.
- 10:03Well, welcome back.
- 10:05I hope it goes perfectly.
- 10:10Well, that never happens.
- 10:12So if that happened,
- 10:14God would be involved.
- 10:17Yeah.
- 10:18But I wanted to, last time we had you on,
- 10:21we had a few technical
- 10:22issues and you had to like
- 10:23split pretty early.
- 10:24So I wanted to clean up a
- 10:25couple of things.
- 10:27First of all, everybody,
- 10:28we have Jason Grubb with us,
- 10:30four-time CrossFit Games champion.
- 10:35And won every off-season
- 10:36competition this year that he entered.
- 10:39So on a roll,
- 10:42I want to talk to you about 10 years ago,
- 10:46you made a transformation.
- 10:49what were you doing before
- 10:50that transformation and
- 10:52what was the catalyst that
- 10:54got you to make that change?
- 10:57Man, I wish it was,
- 10:59I wish it was more inspirational.
- 11:01Uh, but I, prior to CrossFit,
- 11:04I was a wedding
- 11:04photographer and I had been
- 11:07doing that for, uh, a,
- 11:10seven or eight years.
- 11:13Prior to that,
- 11:14I played poker for two years
- 11:16in Las Vegas and flew from
- 11:19Colorado to Las Vegas every
- 11:20week to go play poker.
- 11:24So I did that.
- 11:25That was fairly sedentary.
- 11:27Wedding photography was
- 11:28certainly hard work on the
- 11:30day of wedding photography,
- 11:31but it was a lot of time
- 11:32behind a computer, a lot of time.
- 11:35So really in my 20s and 30s,
- 11:37my I i would try to stay
- 11:40somewhat I was just trying
- 11:42not to to be unfit I was
- 11:44trying not like my family
- 11:46is generally overweight my
- 11:48um and fairly unhealthy and
- 11:50addicted to everything so I
- 11:51was trying to avoid all of
- 11:52those things but it was
- 11:53slowly succumbing into
- 11:55those things like I was drinking
- 11:58three or four beers a day, a night.
- 12:01This is kind of what we did
- 12:02in the cul-de-sac.
- 12:03Everyone would go out in the
- 12:04cul-de-sac in the
- 12:04neighborhood at night and
- 12:06just grab a beer out of anyone's fridge.
- 12:08This was part of my routine for 10 years.
- 12:12I was chewing tobacco at the time,
- 12:15which was a habit I picked
- 12:16up playing poker.
- 12:19I was 38 when I started
- 12:22CrossFit and I was trying
- 12:23to run consistently.
- 12:25I was in a place where
- 12:27Maybe for like six months,
- 12:28I was running like four or
- 12:31five miles three times a week.
- 12:33And really feeling like I
- 12:34was really cooking.
- 12:35I was doing well.
- 12:37And...
- 12:39it's starting to get cold outside.
- 12:41It was late November of 2013.
- 12:43It's getting cold out and I
- 12:45hate running in the cold.
- 12:47I just hate it.
- 12:49My sister-in-law had been
- 12:51doing CrossFit for years.
- 12:54I knew that.
- 12:54She's like, Jason, for years, she's like,
- 12:56Jason, you would love it.
- 12:57It'd be great.
- 12:59She was eating paleo and
- 13:01doing all the things.
- 13:01I was like, I'm not into that.
- 13:03No thanks.
- 13:04I didn't know what CrossFit
- 13:06was really at the time.
- 13:08But I just knew that, you know, I'm fine.
- 13:10I'm running.
- 13:11I'm fine.
- 13:12I know what I'm doing.
- 13:13And I didn't know what I was doing,
- 13:14obviously.
- 13:15But she invited me.
- 13:18Finally, in like November,
- 13:19we're having dinner and she's like, look,
- 13:20hey,
- 13:21my my gym has like you get a free a
- 13:25free month.
- 13:26I get a free month if you sign up,
- 13:27if you want to just come try it out,
- 13:29if you like it, we both get a free month.
- 13:31And I was like, OK.
- 13:33fine, I'll go try it out.
- 13:35And I'm not super excited about this.
- 13:37I was like, I probably was like,
- 13:39I was probably like three
- 13:39beers deep when she,
- 13:41when I committed to this thing,
- 13:42like I wasn't sober.
- 13:44Um, and I immediately had regrets.
- 13:48I was nervous the whole day.
- 13:49I think I went on a,
- 13:51a Wednesday night before Thanksgiving.
- 13:53I think that's the night I went and I was,
- 13:55I didn't want to go.
- 13:56Um, I was nervous.
- 13:58Um,
- 13:59I went to the gym.
- 14:00It was in a warehouse area.
- 14:02I didn't even know where the
- 14:02front door was.
- 14:03I walked in.
- 14:04I didn't know what to do.
- 14:05Just walk in,
- 14:05and there's this big
- 14:06warehouse with a gym.
- 14:09She came and saw me, thank God,
- 14:11and rescued me from just
- 14:12being super confused.
- 14:14And there was a class with
- 14:15five people in it.
- 14:16It was really simple, fun.
- 14:19We did a couple of things
- 14:21that I knew how to do.
- 14:24like the workout had
- 14:25handstand pushups and like,
- 14:26you don't walk into
- 14:27CrossFit and just do handstand pushups.
- 14:30So I was like, well, I could do handstand.
- 14:32And they're like, really?
- 14:33I'm like, yeah, I could do handstands.
- 14:35Like I was a gymnast until I
- 14:36was 16 years old and from like 12 to 16.
- 14:41And I had just been able to
- 14:42keep doing handstands my whole life,
- 14:44like a party trick.
- 14:45So I kicked up to a
- 14:46handstand and they were just floored.
- 14:47They thought I was amazing.
- 14:48And that was probably enough
- 14:50to stroke my ego in that
- 14:51moment that like,
- 14:53Oh, handstands are cool here?
- 14:54Because I never thought I
- 14:55would have a reason to do a
- 14:56handstand except to win a
- 14:59bet at a party or something.
- 15:01Party trick, yeah.
- 15:03Yeah, it's a party trick.
- 15:04It's, you know,
- 15:04like I was on a beach in
- 15:06Cancun photographing a wedding and I,
- 15:09you know,
- 15:09me and the groomsmen had a
- 15:10handstand contest.
- 15:11Of course I won.
- 15:13But yeah, I...
- 15:16i enjoyed the I enjoyed the
- 15:17gym you know I enjoyed the
- 15:19workout so I didn't end up
- 15:22joining that gym it was
- 15:23just a little bit too far
- 15:24away uh from my house to
- 15:26drive so I tried another
- 15:27gym on the following monday
- 15:30because now I'm in now I'm
- 15:31kind of intrigued like this
- 15:32is interesting so I go to
- 15:34that first class and it the
- 15:36class was great um
- 15:38There was a 9 a.m.
- 15:40class.
- 15:40There's a bunch of
- 15:4040-year-old men and women in the class.
- 15:43Some of them are more
- 15:45overweight than I am.
- 15:47Some of them are less, whatever.
- 15:49It doesn't matter.
- 15:50But we're all around this age group.
- 15:52And we start this work.
- 15:53It's like power cleans and
- 15:54burpees or something.
- 15:55And I die.
- 15:56It just kills me.
- 15:59And I see these guys all around me like...
- 16:02destroying older than me
- 16:03lots of gray hair they're
- 16:04killing this workout and
- 16:06I've got my hands on my
- 16:07knees and that was enough to like
- 16:11caused me to feel a huge
- 16:13amount of confusion.
- 16:15How are they all doing this?
- 16:16This is crazy.
- 16:17How are they all this fit?
- 16:20This is no big deal for them, and I can't,
- 16:22and I'm dying.
- 16:24Even next to me was a pregnant woman,
- 16:25and she murdered the workout,
- 16:28and I'm dying.
- 16:29I was just so confused.
- 16:33I have to figure this out.
- 16:35And I gave him my credit card.
- 16:36I'm like, here, sign me.
- 16:36I don't care what it costs.
- 16:37I didn't ask.
- 16:38I was like, just sign me up.
- 16:39They're like, well, you get a free week.
- 16:41I'm like, fine.
- 16:41Here's my credit card.
- 16:42Charge me next Monday.
- 16:43I'll see you tomorrow.
- 16:44I'm here.
- 16:45And I went six days a week
- 16:47for nine months straight.
- 16:50Not optimal as well because
- 16:52that's a good way to get hurt.
- 16:54But that was it, Scott.
- 16:56I got sort of like
- 16:58bamboozled into going to a
- 17:01class and then kind of
- 17:02enjoying it and then going
- 17:04to another class and being
- 17:04like just confused at how
- 17:06everyone was so good at
- 17:07this and how terrible I was.
- 17:10And for whatever reason,
- 17:11if I always feel – if I
- 17:12feel that kind of feeling –
- 17:14Like I'm all in, I got to figure this out.
- 17:17And I'm also that kind of person.
- 17:19I inherited a wonderfully
- 17:24addictive personality that
- 17:25I can hone as a superpower
- 17:28or for good or for evil.
- 17:30It could be a good thing or a bad thing.
- 17:33So the good thing is that if
- 17:35I am all in on something,
- 17:37I mean,
- 17:38every ounce of my energy and
- 17:40passion and thought process
- 17:41goes towards figuring that out.
- 17:43And that's kind of what the
- 17:44first year of CrossFit was,
- 17:45like figuring this out and
- 17:47then eventually becoming
- 17:48one of the fittest people
- 17:49in that gym and then
- 17:51opening my own gym and then
- 17:52eventually finding my way
- 17:54into the competitive CrossFit world.
- 17:57So I'm glad you said
- 17:59addictive personality.
- 18:02I started CrossFit over 500 pounds.
- 18:05So to get,
- 18:08and I got down to two 60 in like
- 18:10the first couple of years,
- 18:13I kept it off for like seven years, um,
- 18:15before injury hit me,
- 18:18I replaced one addiction
- 18:19with another addiction.
- 18:22And what that did is it gave
- 18:24me an imbalance in my life
- 18:26that I wasn't the best husband.
- 18:27I wasn't the best father during that time.
- 18:31And I probably went like at
- 18:34my age and half after
- 18:35carrying that much weight
- 18:37should not have been doing
- 18:37two a days for fun, but I was right.
- 18:42Right.
- 18:42Of course.
- 18:43And then, and it all breaks down.
- 18:45Did you experience any of
- 18:46that in the switch from
- 18:49your one addiction to the other?
- 18:52Oh, yeah.
- 18:52I mean,
- 18:54by going to CrossFit six days a week,
- 18:57within two weeks, I had hurt myself.
- 19:00Pulling a rower.
- 19:01I was trying to beat this other guy.
- 19:02I was racing so hard.
- 19:04I tore a little bit of...
- 19:08connective tissue between
- 19:09one of my ribs from pulling
- 19:11the rower like a maniac.
- 19:12Um,
- 19:13I had a rotator cuff issue from
- 19:15gymnastics that flared up.
- 19:16Um,
- 19:17and that's often when you start doing
- 19:19some activity things,
- 19:20old things start to flare up,
- 19:21but the addiction to CrossFit, um,
- 19:24it started to over time, um,
- 19:31Of course, it replaced my job.
- 19:33I really wanted an exit from
- 19:35wedding photography anyway,
- 19:37but it made sense to open a gym.
- 19:39After one year, I was like, well,
- 19:41I'm curious about opening a gym.
- 19:42How do you do that?
- 19:44It can't be that hard.
- 19:46That is a false statement.
- 19:47There's nothing harder than
- 19:49owning and operating a CrossFit gym.
- 19:51It is the hardest thing I've ever done.
- 19:53So I did that for four years.
- 19:55But that, it just became everything.
- 19:57So now I'm a CrossFitter.
- 19:59Now I own a CrossFit gym.
- 20:01Now I'm a competitive
- 20:02CrossFit athlete with a CrossFit gym.
- 20:04I ended up selling my gym.
- 20:06But when you make this behavior change,
- 20:10like to being super fit, it has these –
- 20:15This domino effect.
- 20:16It changed the way I ate.
- 20:18Eventually,
- 20:18I stopped drinking four beers a day.
- 20:20Not for the first two years.
- 20:22I still drank four beers a day.
- 20:24My brain... I mean,
- 20:25I knew that drinking three
- 20:27or four beers... I still drink IPAs,
- 20:29but maybe I cut down to three.
- 20:32But I knew that wasn't good.
- 20:33I would watch the open
- 20:34announcement in 2015 or
- 20:372016 while drinking an IPA.
- 20:40You're like, oh,
- 20:41I can't wait to do this workout tomorrow.
- 20:42And it was just...
- 20:44It was an addiction that I
- 20:45had to take time to break that addiction.
- 20:48Chewing tobacco.
- 20:49I didn't quit chewing
- 20:50tobacco until I qualified
- 20:52for the CrossFit Games in 2018.
- 20:55And the thought occurred to
- 20:56me one night that a
- 20:58CrossFit Games athlete
- 20:59doesn't chew tobacco.
- 21:01Now,
- 21:01there's probably a bunch of CrossFit
- 21:02Games athletes that chew tobacco.
- 21:03But in my mind,
- 21:05a CrossFit Games athlete
- 21:07doesn't chew tobacco.
- 21:07So I just threw the can away.
- 21:11And it wasn't like this epiphany.
- 21:13I still had all of the
- 21:14feelings of quitting an addiction.
- 21:16It sucked.
- 21:17Like that week was terrible.
- 21:19And the following week was less terrible.
- 21:20And the next week was a
- 21:21little less terrible.
- 21:23I mean,
- 21:23now I use – these are little coffee
- 21:26pouches.
- 21:27If I would have had these
- 21:28that first week of tobacco –
- 21:30I replace chewing tobacco
- 21:32with a coffee pouch,
- 21:34and these are amazing.
- 21:36But they're non-addictive,
- 21:37so I can go a day or two
- 21:39having just forgotten that these exist.
- 21:41And I'm like, oh, that's right.
- 21:42Ooh, let me have one of these.
- 21:43These are fun.
- 21:44But I've been shedding addictions...
- 21:50that have stuck with me over
- 21:51the past 10 years of CrossFit,
- 21:53like little by little addictions have,
- 21:56have come off.
- 21:57Like I, I also pick up new things.
- 21:59Like my new thing over the
- 22:00past year is that I have a
- 22:01small bowl of ice cream every night.
- 22:05Like, and if I had,
- 22:06if I don't have ice cream in the house,
- 22:07I will almost drive like 30
- 22:10minutes round trip to the
- 22:10store to get ice cream.
- 22:12It's not much,
- 22:12it's a little bowl of ice
- 22:13cream with a little chocolate on it.
- 22:15But it replaced the behavior
- 22:18of having a drink every night.
- 22:20And so like, OK, yeah,
- 22:24now I got an ice cream thing.
- 22:26Thankfully, I build that into my macros.
- 22:28I have room for that.
- 22:30In 3,000 calories a day,
- 22:31I save about 400 calories
- 22:33of my daily intake for that
- 22:36very necessary bowl of ice cream.
- 22:39I haven't solved any of this, Scott.
- 22:41I've just tried to manage my
- 22:43way around this addictive nature.
- 22:45It's built in.
- 22:46And so I also have to be
- 22:48careful with things.
- 22:49I don't want to introduce new addictions.
- 22:55So I'm going to jump to...
- 22:59You have really become the
- 23:00face of the Masters Division.
- 23:04And to go from...
- 23:08a guy who is just confused
- 23:10and getting beat by
- 23:11pregnant women in the
- 23:12workout to the face of an
- 23:16entire division is a huge leap.
- 23:20What do you feel your
- 23:21responsibility is with that?
- 23:25Oh, that's a good question.
- 23:26Um, the, it, it, it, well,
- 23:31I didn't plan for this.
- 23:32Um,
- 23:34first of all,
- 23:35but it wasn't completely accidental.
- 23:38Um, I mean,
- 23:38I started the process of
- 23:40sharing my thoughts and
- 23:40feelings on YouTube in like 2019, 2019,
- 23:432020.
- 23:43Um, and it, you know, to crickets,
- 23:48you know,
- 23:49one or two people out there
- 23:50would watch a YouTube video is awesome.
- 23:52Um, and like, wow, 30 watch this time.
- 23:54That was great.
- 23:55Um, and it has picked up steam over time.
- 23:57I feel the responsibility now is to, um,
- 24:04to provide a positive and
- 24:06optimistic and realistic
- 24:10viewpoint of what masters
- 24:13can do above age 35.
- 24:15I've adopted the tagline,
- 24:19your best days are ahead of you.
- 24:21Because that's been,
- 24:22that was something that
- 24:24when I was in my mid
- 24:25thirties and I was toying
- 24:27with weight gain,
- 24:30like I was nervous that I
- 24:31wouldn't be able to control weight gain
- 24:34control my, my health,
- 24:36that my DNA was just like, I was,
- 24:38I was destined to be old and unhealthy.
- 24:42And, and that maybe it might,
- 24:44I was past my prime at 30, maybe 35.
- 24:46I really felt that.
- 24:49And I, it, it never came together.
- 24:51I started CrossFit.
- 24:52My body started changing.
- 24:53I started, you know,
- 24:55doing well in competition,
- 24:56all that kind of stuff.
- 24:57But it was really over the
- 24:57past couple of years that I
- 24:58realized this idea that
- 25:00your best days are ahead of you.
- 25:03is can be a reality and that
- 25:04my life has gotten better as I age.
- 25:08And I mean,
- 25:09we even use these little
- 25:10phrases as masters athletes, like, man,
- 25:12I can't wait till I'm 50.
- 25:14Who says that?
- 25:15Right.
- 25:15That's just like,
- 25:16I can't wait to level up to 50.
- 25:17I can't wait to get out of
- 25:18this age division.
- 25:19This 45 to 49 is getting really tough.
- 25:23I can't wait to jump to 50.
- 25:24And then, you know,
- 25:25a couple of years into 50,
- 25:26I can't wait till I'm 55.
- 25:28These are new thoughts.
- 25:30Yeah.
- 25:31For one second,
- 25:32you're in probably the most
- 25:34consistent division for top
- 25:37five men in all of the Masters divisions.
- 25:40Yes.
- 25:42So it isn't easy.
- 25:43No.
- 25:44No, these guys are ridiculous.
- 25:46They're unrelenting.
- 25:48They won't slow down.
- 25:51And most of them follow me.
- 25:52I don't really get a break.
- 25:54Like when I turn 50...
- 25:56There's a few guys that turn 50 with me.
- 25:59It's not like, oh, I'm free.
- 26:02Now I'm 50 and they're back here.
- 26:03Some of them come with me.
- 26:04And then the next year, more of them come.
- 26:06So that's the detriment of
- 26:10this age group is that they
- 26:11were all aging up together.
- 26:13It's not like we're going to
- 26:14shed any of these guys.
- 26:16But I feel like there's a
- 26:18responsibility to continue
- 26:20to inspire everyday
- 26:23athletes or just even guys
- 26:26that haven't started
- 26:26CrossFit that you can at
- 26:28any age start this and make
- 26:31a dramatic impact on your life,
- 26:33huge impact on your life.
- 26:34So part of that audience is
- 26:36like the person that was
- 26:39fit at 20 but thinks that
- 26:40their life is done.
- 26:41No, their best days can be ahead of them.
- 26:44Also,
- 26:44the responsibility is to continue to
- 26:46inspire the everyday gym
- 26:48warriors that maybe wanna be competitive,
- 26:50that there is still room for that,
- 26:53that we can still at our age,
- 26:56do crazy things on the
- 26:58competition floor and be a part of that.
- 27:01I get really excited,
- 27:03not just about winning.
- 27:05I have set a high bar for myself,
- 27:08for sure.
- 27:09But it's not just winning,
- 27:09but just getting out on the floor.
- 27:11Event one,
- 27:12I'm giddy with excitement that
- 27:14I'm with all of these guys,
- 27:15and we're going to go out
- 27:16there and do some stuff.
- 27:17We're going to go snatch and
- 27:19do clean and jerks,
- 27:19or we're going to go
- 27:20deadlift and rope climb, pull some stuff.
- 27:22I get so excited for those moments.
- 27:26where we have an opportunity
- 27:27at our age to battle.
- 27:30So there's some sport in there.
- 27:32I don't know what that is.
- 27:33But I want to inspire guys
- 27:35and support them to help
- 27:36them experience that as I have.
- 27:40At the same time,
- 27:41the other responsibility is
- 27:43to try to have a good pulse
- 27:45and a beat on what people
- 27:46are feeling in the master's age group.
- 27:50Look,
- 27:50I wish I had consistent conversations
- 27:53with Dave Castro.
- 27:55Like, I don't.
- 27:57I should.
- 27:58In fact, at the Legends Championship,
- 27:59he came up to me.
- 28:00He's like, Jason, we should talk more.
- 28:02And I was like, yes, we should talk more.
- 28:06That was the extent of the conversation.
- 28:08What I should have done was like,
- 28:09give me your contact
- 28:10information so we can talk more.
- 28:12Like, let me text you or something.
- 28:15But I want to be ready if
- 28:17CrossFit ever does want to
- 28:18have conversations with me more directly.
- 28:21And I'm pretty close with the Legends guys,
- 28:23with Bob and Joe over the
- 28:25Legends Championship, the founders.
- 28:28We might text a couple of
- 28:30times a week on certain weeks.
- 28:32So I have this ability to
- 28:34provide feedback to those
- 28:35guys from what I'm hearing
- 28:37from Masters athletes.
- 28:38I want to be able to represent,
- 28:39in a sense,
- 28:41our age groups, our division fairly.
- 28:46And so if something needs to
- 28:47be criticized publicly,
- 28:49I want to try to do that.
- 28:52If something needs to be praised publicly,
- 28:53I want to be able to do that as well,
- 28:55or supported publicly.
- 28:58When it first got announced
- 28:59that the games were going
- 29:00to break off the age group divisions,
- 29:02I was public that I was sad.
- 29:04I was bummed about that.
- 29:06And honestly,
- 29:07it was part of change is hard.
- 29:08I wasn't sure there weren't
- 29:09a lot of details,
- 29:11but I was trying to be as
- 29:12transparent as I could be
- 29:13because I feel like what
- 29:14I'm feeling is probably
- 29:15what the community is
- 29:15feeling as well to an extent.
- 29:17Right.
- 29:18And as we hear about Legends
- 29:19and that partnership and
- 29:20then we hear more about
- 29:21what all can go into that,
- 29:23Bob and Joe kind of can
- 29:24give me a little bit of
- 29:25more detail that sometimes
- 29:27I can't always share.
- 29:28It gives me hope and
- 29:29optimism that then I can
- 29:31share that hope and
- 29:31optimism with everyone.
- 29:33with the group and lead us
- 29:34into the future of what the
- 29:35Masters division can look
- 29:36like in this sport.
- 29:38So I think all of those
- 29:39things are part of my responsibilities.
- 29:43Not sugarcoat anything and
- 29:45also just not be a huge pessimist.
- 29:51There are,
- 29:52there are voices out there
- 29:54because there's not a lot
- 29:54of voices coming from CrossFit HQ.
- 29:57Okay.
- 29:57There's not a big, you know,
- 29:58when Glassman was there,
- 29:59he led with his voice, with his passion.
- 30:03He,
- 30:04whether he was the best CEO or the best
- 30:06or the directions he led, whatever,
- 30:08not even judging that,
- 30:09but he was somebody who
- 30:11stood at a speaker and
- 30:12spoke to the community, right?
- 30:14There's no one at HQ that
- 30:15does that right now.
- 30:17I don't think.
- 30:17I mean, Dave does get on once a week.
- 30:19I love his things he puts on YouTube.
- 30:21Thank God there's something.
- 30:22But there's not a loud voice
- 30:24at HQ sharing.
- 30:26But there are voices out
- 30:30there that fill that void.
- 30:31And some of those voices can
- 30:33be pretty freaking
- 30:34pessimistic and really crap on CrossFit.
- 30:37And so I don't want to be that guy.
- 30:39I want to be a voice that...
- 30:42that is positive in every
- 30:43way that I can be.
- 30:45Um, and,
- 30:45and also if I'm disappointed or upset,
- 30:47I often,
- 30:47I sometimes share that stuff too.
- 30:49You know,
- 30:50every time someone says every 45
- 30:52year old masters athlete is
- 30:53on performance enhancing drugs,
- 30:55someone says that all the time.
- 30:57And every time he says that
- 30:58I'm going to post online that that is BS.
- 31:01Not everyone is,
- 31:02I don't know anyone who is,
- 31:04and I'm certainly not anyway.
- 31:06Um, so is that a fair answer?
- 31:09Yeah, fair answer,
- 31:10but I'm going to give you a follow-up,
- 31:12and then I'm going to turn
- 31:13it over to Jamie to kind of
- 31:14finish this up and move
- 31:15into games talk for this coming season.
- 31:18Cool.
- 31:22I'm trying to find a way to
- 31:23ask this in a way that makes sense.
- 31:26You are the face of the CrossFit Masters,
- 31:29but you and like my friend
- 31:31Rudy have elevated
- 31:33yourselves through very
- 31:35hard work and a lot of
- 31:36accomplishments into a way
- 31:39that you're getting
- 31:40sponsorships that some of
- 31:42the other divisions aren't doing, right?
- 31:44And so...
- 31:46You're asked a lot of times
- 31:48when big news breaks to
- 31:50come on show and give your opinion.
- 31:54But in some ways,
- 31:56because of your hard work,
- 31:57you've elevated yourself a
- 32:00little bit further than
- 32:01other athletes have.
- 32:03Do you feel you can still
- 32:04represent all athletes?
- 32:08Because like my friend Jamie here,
- 32:10one master, one MFC, one legends.
- 32:14She doesn't have the
- 32:14sponsorship deals that you have.
- 32:16Yeah.
- 32:17Yeah.
- 32:18I'll tell you what the
- 32:19sponsorship athletes do.
- 32:21Yeah.
- 32:22The sponsorship stuff.
- 32:24It's really funny because it's, it's not,
- 32:27it's not because the, so the, uh, it's a,
- 32:30it's a weird,
- 32:30it's like a chicken before
- 32:31the egg kind of thing.
- 32:32Um,
- 32:36That was actually one of my
- 32:37questions was like, what,
- 32:39what came first?
- 32:40You're like,
- 32:41so you went to the games in 2018,
- 32:42your YouTube channel started in 2019.
- 32:46Did you winning the CrossFit
- 32:48games get you attention or
- 32:50did it take the crop?
- 32:52Did it take your hard work
- 32:54in social media presence
- 32:55and constant videos to get
- 32:57a big following for some
- 32:58sponsors and notice,
- 32:59or was it the wind at the
- 33:01games that got you there?
- 33:03That is yes, yes.
- 33:06I'm going to answer yes, all of that.
- 33:09The combination of the wins,
- 33:11the wins by themselves
- 33:13don't create an audience.
- 33:15Every year at the games, every year I won,
- 33:17as a Masters athlete,
- 33:18I'd bump up by a very
- 33:21decent amount of followers.
- 33:22And that was really cool.
- 33:23Those first few days after the games,
- 33:25just seeing all these new followers,
- 33:27it was really, really fun.
- 33:31But the YouTube channel
- 33:34required consistency,
- 33:36posting about every week or
- 33:38every other week,
- 33:38even when there was crickets.
- 33:40And I have a video out there
- 33:42now that has done over a million views.
- 33:46And it had maybe 6,000 or
- 33:488,000 views for six months.
- 33:51And then something happened
- 33:53in the algorithm.
- 33:54And the algorithm just
- 33:54started showing anybody who
- 33:56searched for CrossFit, my video.
- 33:58And I started getting into
- 33:59the 100,000 views, then 200, then 400,
- 34:00then 800, surpassing a million views.
- 34:06after a couple of years but
- 34:06it was like so this old
- 34:08evergreen content started
- 34:09to catch on on the youtube
- 34:11algorithm um and build
- 34:13followers and and all of
- 34:14that stuff so we're almost
- 34:1530k on instagram almost 30k
- 34:17on on youtube and these
- 34:19aren't brooke wells numbers
- 34:20for sure right danny
- 34:22spiegel's got a couple more
- 34:23followers than I do so her
- 34:24brand deals are going to be
- 34:25huge compared to what I'm
- 34:27capable of getting but
- 34:29being a four times champion
- 34:31or having won everything
- 34:33for the last three or four years
- 34:35is helpful on the resume to
- 34:37legitimize my voice and
- 34:39what I'm talking about.
- 34:40I know what I'm doing on the
- 34:41competition floor,
- 34:42but also having a channel
- 34:44that is very transparent, I think,
- 34:47and sharing consistently
- 34:48with the community,
- 34:50whether it's behind the
- 34:51scenes of me traveling in
- 34:53an RV or building a sauna
- 34:55or a day in the life of
- 34:56training or just one workout.
- 34:58All of those transparencies, I think,
- 35:00help build a community,
- 35:01build the audience.
- 35:03And it literally wasn't until
- 35:05the end of 2023 into, I'm sorry,
- 35:08the end of 2022 into 2023,
- 35:09where sponsors sort of
- 35:13exploded a little bit for me.
- 35:14And by exploded, we're talking, you know,
- 35:16six or eight sponsors.
- 35:19You know, one of my favorite brands,
- 35:20Thirdsy,
- 35:21they started sponsoring me
- 35:22towards the early parts of 2023,
- 35:26maybe 2022, I can't remember,
- 35:28somewhere around there.
- 35:29So shout out to them,
- 35:30because they were one of
- 35:30the first ones that
- 35:31committed to a master's athlete
- 35:35receiving sponsorship money
- 35:37on a monthly basis for a
- 35:39product that I loved.
- 35:40It's a win-win.
- 35:42That was one of the first ones.
- 35:43At the end of 2022,
- 35:44I did a YouTube video on my
- 35:452022 earnings revealed.
- 35:45It was like, yeah,
- 35:46I made $10,000 at the CrossFit Games.
- 35:54And people are shocked.
- 35:56Oh, you guys get $10K.
- 35:58Well,
- 35:59didn't Justin Medeiros win $300,000
- 36:01that year?
- 36:02Yes, we get $10K.
- 36:04Hey, there's 14 Masters divisions.
- 36:06That's a lot of cash to dish out.
- 36:08$10K, thank you.
- 36:09I'll take it.
- 36:11This is how much I won at
- 36:12Legends that year.
- 36:12Here's the sponsorship money that year.
- 36:14And it was all, maybe it was $20,000.
- 36:16I think YouTube revenue was even in there,
- 36:18too.
- 36:18So this is not a full-time job there.
- 36:22It doesn't even pay a mortgage.
- 36:24It doesn't pay for my truck.
- 36:26OK, it pays for my truck,
- 36:28which I'm trying to sell,
- 36:29if someone's interested.
- 36:31But then in 2023,
- 36:36some sponsors just started
- 36:37knocking on my door.
- 36:38It was really interesting.
- 36:39And I think it has to do
- 36:40with the size of the
- 36:41audience and that people
- 36:43are starting to realize,
- 36:44having tested and seen results,
- 36:46that sponsoring masters
- 36:48athletes are doing work
- 36:49where they can get their
- 36:50product in front of masters age groups.
- 36:53is profitable.
- 36:55We're a demographic that spends money.
- 36:57So if Jason Grubb says that
- 37:00these grips are great,
- 37:01I'm going to give them a shot.
- 37:03Or if Jason Grubb loves
- 37:04these shoes or the barbell
- 37:07apparel clothing, like, hey,
- 37:08let's see how that goes.
- 37:09Masters athletes can spend money.
- 37:12And my argument has always
- 37:14been that the disposable
- 37:15income is in the master's age category.
- 37:17Dude, we fund the games.
- 37:19We fund...
- 37:20there's more signups of
- 37:22masters athletes in the open than,
- 37:25than other divisions.
- 37:26Obviously we're a huge
- 37:27revenue source for crossover,
- 37:28a huge revenue source for all the brands,
- 37:30but they're dumping all of
- 37:31their advertising into 20
- 37:33year olds who are beautiful.
- 37:35No doubt men and women's fine.
- 37:38But if they give us a shot,
- 37:40I think they're going to
- 37:40see a decent return.
- 37:41And again,
- 37:42we have to think like Jason Grubb,
- 37:44I've got 30,000,
- 37:46followers on Instagram or
- 37:4830,000 subscribers on YouTube.
- 37:51That's not a huge amount,
- 37:53but it's enough that
- 37:55sponsors will spend some money there.
- 37:57So to answer the question, yes,
- 37:59it does take so much work
- 38:01to intentionally build an
- 38:02audience on your social platforms.
- 38:05And it's work and luck.
- 38:08I got lucky that some videos took off.
- 38:11I think the luck was there
- 38:12because I was very
- 38:12consistent in posting regularly.
- 38:18Those early videos are tough.
- 38:19And even sometimes my existing videos,
- 38:22I'll watch one and I'll be like, oh,
- 38:24I forgot to cut that out.
- 38:26All right, well, it's out there now.
- 38:27It's got a few thousand views.
- 38:28I'm not changing it.
- 38:30So it also doesn't have to be perfect.
- 38:32For those that are thinking
- 38:33about doing this,
- 38:34just doing it is the win.
- 38:36And then you get better and
- 38:38you find out what people like.
- 38:40But perfection is not perfect.
- 38:42that's not necessary
- 38:43especially in youtube
- 38:44almost the more
- 38:45professional the more
- 38:46edited the videos the less
- 38:47well they did if I just
- 38:49grab a gopro and document
- 38:50my day boom we crush it so
- 38:53it does take all that
- 38:55consistent effort to grow that following
- 38:58And also have like, okay,
- 38:59I've also won a bunch of things.
- 39:01So that's helpful.
- 39:02Like I'm good at this stuff,
- 39:03good at two things.
- 39:05And that's where sponsorships have come.
- 39:07Now,
- 39:08what's fun about that is I have some
- 39:09options with sponsors.
- 39:10Like I can,
- 39:11I've had to turn some sponsors
- 39:12down because I don't,
- 39:14didn't work out it didn't it
- 39:15wasn't the right fit like I
- 39:17don't say yes to everyone I
- 39:19like money trust me I want
- 39:22I want if someone's
- 39:23offering me a little bit of
- 39:24money I want to say yes
- 39:26this is amazing this thing
- 39:28but sometimes I'll get a
- 39:29product to be like oh shoot
- 39:32I do not like this thing um
- 39:34and so I'll never sign with
- 39:35somebody that I don't
- 39:35actually work with but uh
- 39:38but yeah that's you know
- 39:39jamie that's it it's it
- 39:40requires both and before I
- 39:43had an audience
- 39:44yeah I was I i was trying to
- 39:46figure out crack that nut
- 39:47how do you do this how do
- 39:48you figure this out and it
- 39:50wasn't like building an
- 39:51audience hoping to get
- 39:52sponsors I was building an
- 39:54audience because I felt
- 39:54like I had something to say
- 39:55and I wanted to I wanted to
- 39:57give that a go um and I was
- 40:00honored when 200 people
- 40:01watched a youtube video I
- 40:02was blown away with that I
- 40:04was like 200 people looked
- 40:05at this this is amazing so I just
- 40:08just kept doing it the
- 40:10audience ended up just
- 40:11growing on its own still
- 40:13growing every day um and
- 40:15sponsors I mean it did it
- 40:17did come together but yeah
- 40:19all of the work created the
- 40:20situation where I was lucky
- 40:21enough to have something of
- 40:23value for sponsors I gotta
- 40:25have enough eyeballs and I
- 40:27have to be a legit athlete
- 40:28like of course rudy should
- 40:30be sponsored rudy should
- 40:31have a huge audience um
- 40:33but he also has to get out there.
- 40:36I want to know more about Rudy.
- 40:39Jamie, I want to know more about you.
- 40:41If there's any content that needs more,
- 40:45I know I'm coming, is more athletes.
- 40:47Do it.
- 40:48Put your stuff out there.
- 40:50All right, Scott.
- 40:52I did documentaries on Rudy
- 40:54and Jamie last year.
- 40:56They're sitting out on
- 40:57YouTube for everybody to
- 41:00get to know them.
- 41:02But, and that's the hard thing, right?
- 41:05YouTube is a 20-something place to live.
- 41:09It is.
- 41:09And 75% of our audience is 25 to 55.
- 41:15Right.
- 41:15Right.
- 41:16I know.
- 41:16I know all the demographics.
- 41:18I'm not sure why 25 year
- 41:19olds are watching my videos.
- 41:20I know what they're doing,
- 41:23but they like it.
- 41:23But you know what, Scott?
- 41:24It's funny because those documentaries,
- 41:26they live there, right?
- 41:27I was thinking about that
- 41:28video that had a million
- 41:29views now at this point.
- 41:31Man, it just sat there.
- 41:32It sat there for a while.
- 41:33And then and then all of a
- 41:34sudden it became a suggested video.
- 41:38And again,
- 41:38I don't there's this element where, like,
- 41:40you do all this work, it's out there.
- 41:42Now, continue to post it.
- 41:44This is one thing that I
- 41:45don't do often enough.
- 41:47If I've got some gold out there,
- 41:49like there's some videos where I'm like,
- 41:50people should look at,
- 41:51they should watch this.
- 41:52This was really good.
- 41:56I don't have,
- 41:57but I should have a
- 41:57consistent posting schedule
- 41:59of my evergreen content to remind people
- 42:03hey this is out there hey if
- 42:05you want to know my entire
- 42:07rv adventure I've got an
- 42:08entire playlist of all my
- 42:09rv stuff um people like god
- 42:11can we see a full tour of
- 42:12the rv I'm like bro just
- 42:15search youtube I did that
- 42:16but they don't know so you
- 42:17have to constantly remind
- 42:18them and then maybe youtube
- 42:20will find favor with you
- 42:22like the gods you know like
- 42:25they just shine on you
- 42:27Yeah, last year, Jamie,
- 42:29this is how we kind of got
- 42:31met and got together.
- 42:33She let me live with her for
- 42:34quarterfinals.
- 42:36Oh, wow.
- 42:37Wow.
- 42:38We did the whole weekend, start to finish,
- 42:41and it was a rollercoaster ride.
- 42:44Yep.
- 42:46A big one.
- 42:47It is one of the most
- 42:49favorite things I've ever
- 42:50done in this space.
- 42:52That's amazing.
- 42:55I mean, how fun is that as an experience,
- 42:58both for you, Scott, and for you, Jamie,
- 43:00right?
- 43:00With quarterfinals,
- 43:01I don't know what the
- 43:02rollercoaster elements were.
- 43:03You'll have to tell me.
- 43:03But if it was the one that
- 43:06had shuttle runs, I mean,
- 43:07that was a rollercoaster in
- 43:08and of itself.
- 43:09I almost died in that workout.
- 43:11I almost died.
- 43:13We went hours debating
- 43:15whether you should redo an event.
- 43:18Hours.
- 43:18Yeah.
- 43:18Yeah.
- 43:19yeah right like no I'm done
- 43:22I'm done then it was no I
- 43:23really should I need to
- 43:24take this shot and then no
- 43:26I'm done I like literally
- 43:28back and forth yeah what
- 43:30with like an hour left you
- 43:31went I'm going for it yeah
- 43:34which which one did you do
- 43:36uh the row thruster one I
- 43:38tried to redo but halfway
- 43:40through I was like this isn't worth it
- 43:42I've done that and it's not
- 43:44like I was not in
- 43:45contention well you had to
- 43:48be top 30 so I guess I was
- 43:49like questioning where I
- 43:51would be yeah um I don't
- 43:54know it's just like the
- 43:55blind like I think scott
- 43:57hadn't quite understood the
- 43:58nuances of blind
- 44:00leaderboard waiting to see
- 44:01where you're at how
- 44:02stressful that kind of
- 44:03stuff is um yeah it's just just like and
- 44:07setting up the floor and
- 44:09having other athletes in the gym.
- 44:10And just like that kind of
- 44:11stuff was kind of a behind
- 44:13the scenes that he, he was,
- 44:15I opened it too.
- 44:16I learned so much.
- 44:18But Jamie is so open and she, so I,
- 44:23I did the same thing with Rudy for semis.
- 44:26And so Rudy is very much
- 44:29like in his own space,
- 44:31headphones in doing his thing.
- 44:35Jamie will talk to me right
- 44:36up until go time.
- 44:38Right.
- 44:38Right.
- 44:39Yeah.
- 44:40And that's what's really fun.
- 44:43I think, well, I'll just say,
- 44:45I was at Mayhem last year
- 44:48doing quarterfinals and semifinals.
- 44:50I just happened to be
- 44:50traveling through the area.
- 44:56it's funny because there was
- 44:57a lot of behind the scenes
- 44:58going on there.
- 45:01But you didn't, the videos,
- 45:03they didn't show all the
- 45:04preparation that goes in the,
- 45:05it goes into it really goes into it.
- 45:07Showing the performance is one thing.
- 45:09And that's, it's really fun.
- 45:10But what goes in behind the
- 45:12scenes when you're on, I mean, you've,
- 45:13they've got a fork, not a forklift,
- 45:15but one of those like X, I don't know.
- 45:18It's some machine that goes up.
- 45:20Yeah.
- 45:20Yeah.
- 45:23Yeah, and so you have to have those.
- 45:24So if you're going to measure,
- 45:25unless someone's going to
- 45:26climb the rope to measure 15 feet,
- 45:28you need a way to measure
- 45:2915 feet on a rope climb, right?
- 45:32Yes.
- 45:32So, I mean, I used to have like someone,
- 45:34okay, you climb the rope.
- 45:36I don't want to burn an
- 45:37extra rope climb by climbing the rope,
- 45:39right?
- 45:39So you have someone else
- 45:40that can climb a rope.
- 45:42Drop a tape from up there
- 45:43and hang with one hand and
- 45:45a tape while you're filming.
- 45:47It's chaos, man.
- 45:49It's chaos doing these.
- 45:50It's the stress.
- 45:53it's double the stress
- 45:55because the workout is
- 45:55stressful enough but all
- 45:57the setup all the
- 45:58preparation having two
- 45:59cameras talking to the
- 46:00camera starting both making
- 46:02sure everything goes well
- 46:03because if you lose that
- 46:04video that's it you're done
- 46:07all the work is done your
- 46:08whole year so um fun fun to
- 46:11capture that stuff behind
- 46:12the scenes that's this is
- 46:14the unseen stuff that um it
- 46:16makes me think like I'll
- 46:17have to do that this year like uh
- 46:20Like literally get into the
- 46:21details of the behind the
- 46:22scenes and then to show
- 46:24parts of the workout.
- 46:24The workout,
- 46:25we've seen Jason work out
- 46:26plenty of times.
- 46:28How did you set up the floor?
- 46:29What are you measuring with?
- 46:30You know, these are all very,
- 46:32very important issues.
- 46:34Yeah,
- 46:34it can be 15 minutes or more of floor
- 46:38layout, setup, measuring, showing,
- 46:40and you're like no longer
- 46:41warm or ready to go.
- 46:42Yeah, I'm cold.
- 46:43Yeah, totally.
- 46:44Yeah.
- 46:45I mean, you cue up the music.
- 46:47Someone's got to handle the music.
- 46:48Like you can't just work out, you know,
- 46:50in the quiet.
- 46:51So, and then you have someone that's like,
- 46:53someone's checking the
- 46:53camera every once in a
- 46:54while and make sure the camera,
- 46:55both the GoPro and the
- 46:56iPhone are still recording.
- 46:57Yeah.
- 46:58Yeah.
- 46:59It just makes me stress thinking about it.
- 47:01I know.
- 47:02And I've done this 10 years.
- 47:03The one that blew me away is
- 47:05so that you guys use me time, we time.
- 47:10Sometimes, yeah.
- 47:12So to line up the gym clock
- 47:15to the we time clock.
- 47:17So stupid.
- 47:20They would argue for 10
- 47:21minutes on the process to
- 47:23get it lined up.
- 47:26Yep.
- 47:27Yeah,
- 47:28I don't even use WeTime because of that.
- 47:33I did an online competition,
- 47:35the Zelos Games, a couple of years ago.
- 47:37And it was just me.
- 47:38I had to record all my own stuff.
- 47:39And I used the WeTime app.
- 47:41So I had to kind of estimate
- 47:42the main clock or with my watch.
- 47:47But no, I like to see a clock.
- 47:48Look, I manage my workouts by the clock,
- 47:52particularly in those types of events.
- 47:53So I have to see what my
- 47:56pacing is with that clock in my view.
- 47:58It doesn't always work
- 48:00because sometimes the
- 48:02camera needs to be facing a
- 48:03certain way and the clock
- 48:04needs to be a certain direction.
- 48:06So there's times when I'll have two clocks,
- 48:08like one in front of me, one behind me,
- 48:10one in view of the camera.
- 48:11And it'll be like, three, two, one, click.
- 48:14shit we messed it up oh
- 48:15sorry for my language we
- 48:16goofed up we messed up the
- 48:17we messed up the clocks
- 48:18reset the clocks um because
- 48:20the clocks have to be
- 48:21dialed in but it's it's
- 48:23stuff like this that it
- 48:24like it makes or breaks
- 48:25your qualifier um and
- 48:28historically when there's
- 48:28only 10 athletes going to
- 48:30the games that you got to
- 48:33thread that needle so tight
- 48:34just to get to the games
- 48:36now that we've got a larger field
- 48:40Yes, there's still stress.
- 48:41And no, you can't mess up a video.
- 48:42You can't have a workout thrown out.
- 48:46You can't have any of that.
- 48:46But there's just a teeny
- 48:48little bit less stress.
- 48:49Like maybe I don't have to
- 48:50have a clock in front of me.
- 48:51I don't have to win the qualifiers.
- 48:54I just need to be top 40.
- 48:57I think I should be able to do that.
- 48:59Right.
- 49:00Fingers crossed.
- 49:01We'll see.
- 49:02We'll make something fun out of it.
- 49:04But yeah, back to that social media thing.
- 49:06And how do you get YouTube
- 49:07to pay attention?
- 49:09One, YouTube is super fickle.
- 49:13I think about another
- 49:14podcast that is on YouTube that I see,
- 49:19and it feels like this
- 49:22podcast should just be exploding.
- 49:24It should be exploding, but it's not.
- 49:28Even some of the largest
- 49:29podcasts out there...
- 49:32that I, in the CrossFit space, you know,
- 49:34on YouTube, they're getting, you know,
- 49:36sub 1000 views on a, on a particular,
- 49:39like I'm a big athlete, you know,
- 49:40Tia's on there and there's, you know,
- 49:42sub 1000 views.
- 49:43And it's really curious.
- 49:44It's just curious what YouTube decides.
- 49:46And if I ever figure that out, um,
- 49:48I'll call you Scott and I'll let you know,
- 49:49I'll let you know the inside track.
- 49:51If I crack that nut,
- 49:52me and Mr. Beast are going
- 49:53to figure it out.
- 49:56I would appreciate that.
- 50:00So I see you're sitting
- 50:04there in your Noble
- 50:06CrossFit Games sweatshirt.
- 50:09One of my biggest
- 50:13contentions with this split was the kit.
- 50:18Because that is sort of a
- 50:20major thing that a big
- 50:24chunk of the athletes who
- 50:25try to make it to the Games
- 50:26are going to get this athlete kit.
- 50:29And look exactly like the regular athletes,
- 50:33the elites that are out
- 50:35there on the floor.
- 50:36Um, we,
- 50:39Bob announced when you talked with
- 50:41him that it's a completely different, uh,
- 50:44sponsor Northern spirit is
- 50:46the gear sponsor.
- 50:47Um,
- 50:49so right off the bat and maybe I am
- 50:52just a negative Nancy.
- 50:53Maybe it's because I've never been there.
- 50:55Um,
- 50:57i already feel like this is
- 50:59going the route that I
- 51:00expected when I heard the
- 51:02announcement and I'm
- 51:03frustrated sad disappointed
- 51:05like so we're just gonna
- 51:07get a couple shirts and
- 51:08shorts and here you go and
- 51:10you're not definitely not
- 51:11gonna look like the elites
- 51:12like they get displayed
- 51:13august first you get
- 51:14displayed at the end of
- 51:15august it's gonna look like
- 51:16a different different floor
- 51:18you guys aren't gonna look
- 51:19as professional um what
- 51:22I think that was a giant
- 51:23draw to get some of the top
- 51:24athletes there.
- 51:25And now I worry that some of
- 51:28these people are not going to sign up.
- 51:29And then it's like,
- 51:31am I truly the fittest
- 51:3240-year-old in the world?
- 51:34Maybe not.
- 51:34A few people probably didn't go.
- 51:36Right.
- 51:37It's a good question and a good point.
- 51:39And it is disappointing that
- 51:40it's not a unified title sponsor.
- 51:43That would be cool.
- 51:44And that would create unification in...
- 51:47the overall sport,
- 51:48that the adaptive teenagers
- 51:51and masters are wearing the same gear,
- 51:53GORUCK, as the individual athletes.
- 51:55That would be super smart.
- 51:57That'd be a smart way to
- 52:00keep the brand intact.
- 52:02It would also be really
- 52:03smart to have the age group
- 52:07or the non-individual
- 52:08athletes have our games all
- 52:10prior to the games so that
- 52:12they can feature footage
- 52:14at the games and show like, hey,
- 52:16here's the champions or here's some.
- 52:18During the breaks,
- 52:19you just have on the screen
- 52:21something from the Pitt
- 52:22Teen Throwdown or have
- 52:23something from the Adaptive
- 52:26Championship or our championship,
- 52:27whatever.
- 52:29And I say Pitt Teen Throwdown.
- 52:30I don't mean to say the
- 52:31Teenage CrossFit Games.
- 52:33Let's just call it what it is.
- 52:34It is the Teenage CrossFit Games,
- 52:35our Masters CrossFit Games.
- 52:37So it'd be great to do that.
- 52:40Another way that they could
- 52:42unify that is if they had
- 52:43one of the open announcements this year,
- 52:45include all the divisions
- 52:48in one age group
- 52:49announcement or one announcement.
- 52:50So you've got an individual there,
- 52:51a couple of individuals,
- 52:52a couple of age groups,
- 52:54a couple of adaptive
- 52:54athletes to show this sport
- 52:56is well-rounded.
- 52:57Like, hey...
- 53:00Like,
- 53:00I don't know why they're not doing that.
- 53:01What are they thinking?
- 53:02It's just it's like a softball.
- 53:04Like, here's how to say, hey,
- 53:06we're splitting these off
- 53:07to enhance the sport.
- 53:09And here's how we're all still unified,
- 53:10still together.
- 53:12So, OK, that's not what it is.
- 53:15But it is year one.
- 53:16And my hope is that in year one,
- 53:19we have a transition year.
- 53:21And we do have a clothing sponsor,
- 53:23which is great.
- 53:24We have a clothing sponsor.
- 53:26I'd never heard of Northern Spirit.
- 53:28But someone from Europe, United Kingdom,
- 53:34he sent me a message on Instagram.
- 53:35He's like, dude, their stuff is great.
- 53:37You may not have heard of them,
- 53:37but their stuff is great.
- 53:40It does sound like a tool company, Corey.
- 53:43It's great.
- 53:44It's a good brand.
- 53:45The gear is great.
- 53:46So that's good to know.
- 53:48And yeah, our athlete package...
- 53:50won't be what it was historically.
- 53:52Now,
- 53:53this is going to come across interesting.
- 53:56I do have this sweatshirt.
- 53:58This is from 2022.
- 53:59I do like this old sweatshirt.
- 54:01I mean, I've been there five times,
- 54:05and I have five times worth of gear.
- 54:08I don't have anything from
- 54:092018 or 2019 anymore.
- 54:10I've given all that away,
- 54:11or I've worn through all of it.
- 54:15But every year,
- 54:17I just get nine more pairs
- 54:19of Noble shoes.
- 54:21I get nine more pairs.
- 54:22Whatever.
- 54:23I don't even like those shoes.
- 54:24So I give all of those away
- 54:26because I don't use them.
- 54:28What I'm saying is I'm okay
- 54:31with not getting all of that.
- 54:33The first year was great.
- 54:35And so that is where you are
- 54:36attracting those athletes.
- 54:37Like, hey,
- 54:38you get this thing on the first.
- 54:39You get that experience.
- 54:41What I think they will
- 54:41create at the Games this year is that...
- 54:45The experience of the locker room.
- 54:47I know that Bob and Joe have, you know,
- 54:49got a lot of thoughts in
- 54:50creating that locker room
- 54:51experience that you had
- 54:52with Noble at the games,
- 54:53even Reebok at the games where you go in,
- 54:55you get escorted,
- 54:56you get your all of your stuff.
- 54:58And that's really cool.
- 55:00And I will miss games.
- 55:01I loved going through games.
- 55:05I loved going through the
- 55:06games and getting all the swag.
- 55:08I don't have it with me.
- 55:10Yeti water bottles.
- 55:11There was some pretty epic stuff there.
- 55:14It was great.
- 55:14Those were really cool things,
- 55:17and they were really nice.
- 55:19Like it wasn't something
- 55:20like it didn't take away
- 55:21from the competition.
- 55:22What I, I would get all of them.
- 55:24Like, this is amazing.
- 55:25Super cool.
- 55:26I would do like a swag video.
- 55:28That was a YouTube play.
- 55:29I'll be just transparent.
- 55:30I really do a swag video,
- 55:31try to be the first one to
- 55:32show off what they gave us.
- 55:34And I got to use that to my
- 55:35advantage masters because
- 55:36we got them before the individuals got,
- 55:38so I could reveal all the goods.
- 55:40um but as far as the
- 55:43athletes go um I think we
- 55:45could still draw I think we
- 55:46could draw the biggest
- 55:47athletes in the world
- 55:48because this is the games
- 55:49the fact that there's a
- 55:50field of 40 may reveal new
- 55:52athletes that we that were
- 55:53just under the radar that
- 55:54were under the radar maybe
- 55:55they don't qualify well but
- 55:57they compete in person like
- 55:58like maniacs that was me
- 56:00like I didn't qualify well
- 56:01I've never qualified well
- 56:03until like last year but
- 56:04then when you get me in person and I can
- 56:07crush some souls out there.
- 56:09So there may be some unique
- 56:10opportunities like that.
- 56:11But I also think, Jamie,
- 56:12this is year one and I'm
- 56:15cutting some slack to everyone involved.
- 56:18I think about like Bob and Joe,
- 56:20like why Birmingham?
- 56:21Why Labor Day weekend?
- 56:23They had six months to figure this out.
- 56:25So should CrossFit have
- 56:27maybe contacted them 18 months ago?
- 56:29Well, yeah.
- 56:31Come on.
- 56:32CrossFit is like, hey, real quick,
- 56:34can you guys throw the games next year?
- 56:35We're going to do this instead.
- 56:36What do you think?
- 56:37We want to do this,
- 56:38and you guys have a year to
- 56:39figure this out.
- 56:42In a better world or better situation,
- 56:46CrossFit –
- 56:48CrossFit gets way ahead of this.
- 56:50And now I know Bob and Joe
- 56:51are already working on next year.
- 56:53And I know that Bob wants
- 56:54our games to be prior to
- 56:56the individual games.
- 56:58So I think they're gonna do
- 56:59everything they can.
- 56:59So one thing we do know is
- 57:01that there is going to be a year two.
- 57:03That's great to know.
- 57:04You know what I mean?
- 57:05Like despite how year one goes,
- 57:06I think year one can be,
- 57:08I hope we knock it out of
- 57:09the park as masters athletes.
- 57:10I hope we have record signups in the open,
- 57:13record signups in quarterfinals,
- 57:14that the games are super funded.
- 57:17And it's just a big F you to
- 57:18the world that says, Hey,
- 57:19the masters are done.
- 57:20No, no,
- 57:21we will step up to the plate and
- 57:23make sure that our event is, is,
- 57:27is amazing.
- 57:28Okay.
- 57:28And that's going to take
- 57:28some of our dollars.
- 57:29So we're going to do that.
- 57:30And hopefully that creates
- 57:31momentum into year two, three, four,
- 57:33five.
- 57:34And this can blossom into
- 57:35something that has its own legs, its own,
- 57:38like, yeah, we don't need noble,
- 57:40but whoever, whoever wants to sponsor us,
- 57:42we,
- 57:43we get those bigger packages because
- 57:45we've proven that,
- 57:46We spend money.
- 57:48We can draw a crowd when we
- 57:49have the right setup,
- 57:50the right situation.
- 57:52And all that kind of comes together.
- 57:53But, you know, while this is a step back,
- 57:56it's... I was almost
- 57:58thinking of it in this way.
- 58:00It's a step back in the same
- 58:01way that giving birth is a step back.
- 58:03Like, it takes a toll on the body.
- 58:04But then you come back
- 58:05stronger and better.
- 58:07Like,
- 58:07we're doing something new in this space.
- 58:10Year one is going to have
- 58:11lots of questions.
- 58:13But hopefully what we do in
- 58:15year one helps propel year two, three,
- 58:17four, five.
- 58:18And yeah, in...
- 58:20In 2025, 2026,
- 58:24maybe we're walking out of
- 58:25there with $4,000 worth of gear,
- 58:26every single athlete, Jamie,
- 58:28because that's what we were at the games.
- 58:31So that's my hope.
- 58:34And I think that's the drive, I think,
- 58:36that the guys at Legends have.
- 58:37They have that level of passion.
- 58:39They just need now,
- 58:40they need the community to step up.
- 58:42And if we step up as Masters athletes,
- 58:44that's what funds their future.
- 58:47with the games.
- 58:49And again,
- 58:49let's CrossFit and let's
- 58:52whoever's running CrossFit,
- 58:54as far as the board goes
- 58:55and the private equity,
- 58:57that the masters are
- 58:59actually a big deal in this whole thing.
- 59:00We actually have a really big voice.
- 59:02We have really big checks to
- 59:04write in this space.
- 59:07Private equity always feels
- 59:08like this giant,
- 59:10just black void out there
- 59:12that shadows over CrossFit.
- 59:15And maybe they are,
- 59:15and maybe they'll sell in
- 59:16the next couple of years.
- 59:17Who knows?
- 59:18And who knows what a new owner would do?
- 59:20But as far as the sport goes...
- 59:25I think we're in a position
- 59:26now where this is where we
- 59:29invest our time, we invest our energy,
- 59:30we invest our dollars.
- 59:31And because of that,
- 59:32we can see this become
- 59:34better if we go for it.
- 59:36And the test, I'll just say this.
- 59:37This is the last thing I'm going to say.
- 59:38I know I've gone long on
- 59:39this particular answer.
- 59:41I know Bob loves to program the games.
- 59:45And I know that he's already
- 59:47programmed it.
- 59:48He texted me a few weeks ago.
- 59:48He's like, the games have been programmed.
- 59:50I'm like, bro,
- 59:52who gets to say that besides
- 59:53like Adrian Bosman or Dave Cash?
- 59:55Who has ever said that in the history?
- 59:58I've written the games workouts.
- 59:59Now he's collaborated with Bosman,
- 1:00:01but they've walked in.
- 1:00:03They know what semifinals are.
- 1:00:04They know what the games are.
- 1:00:06Bob is never going to tell a soul,
- 1:00:08obviously, because I'd love to tease him.
- 1:00:10I love to tease him like, hey,
- 1:00:11tell me some stuff.
- 1:00:12Never cracking that lock.
- 1:00:15they know how to test athletes.
- 1:00:16And so whoever wants to be
- 1:00:19crowned the fittest in
- 1:00:19their division will be
- 1:00:21tested as such at this games.
- 1:00:23And so if they don't show up,
- 1:00:24they can't be tested.
- 1:00:25That's it.
- 1:00:26Whoever shows up gets to be
- 1:00:28called the fittest on the
- 1:00:29planet in this age group,
- 1:00:31because these tests will be no joke.
- 1:00:33These guys know how to,
- 1:00:34they know how to do some damage.
- 1:00:36I mean, Scott, you watch this.
- 1:00:37I mean, you know, yeah, Jamie, I mean,
- 1:00:39you know, legends are,
- 1:00:41We know what those tests are like.
- 1:00:43They're very good and
- 1:00:43they're very appropriate
- 1:00:45for our sex and our age.
- 1:00:47They know how to program
- 1:00:48some stuff that really tests us.
- 1:00:54You make me want to go down so many paths.
- 1:00:56I know.
- 1:00:59Open up a lot of cans there, don't I?
- 1:01:01I'm going to hit you with.
- 1:01:03Five or six quick hitter
- 1:01:06games questions for this
- 1:01:07year to get your opinion.
- 1:01:09And it comes from pretty
- 1:01:11much your interview with Bob.
- 1:01:12Mm-hmm.
- 1:01:14This year.
- 1:01:16Games are indoors.
- 1:01:18Mm-hmm.
- 1:01:19Thoughts?
- 1:01:20Yeah, it's fine.
- 1:01:21It's fine.
- 1:01:23The only place that, I mean...
- 1:01:27Legends had an outdoor pool,
- 1:01:29but generally was indoors.
- 1:01:32MFC was all indoors.
- 1:01:34The games has some outdoor events.
- 1:01:36And I mean,
- 1:01:37I love an outdoor event because
- 1:01:39I think I have an advantage.
- 1:01:40If it's hot,
- 1:01:42I love hot work.
- 1:01:43I love being in the heat.
- 1:01:44I love it.
- 1:01:47But Bob didn't say that they
- 1:01:48will all be indoors.
- 1:01:50He did mention something
- 1:01:50about there's some nice
- 1:01:51trails around town.
- 1:01:52There's some things like that.
- 1:01:55He teased some of that stuff.
- 1:01:56I don't even know what
- 1:01:57trails are around here.
- 1:01:59so if 90 are indoors if
- 1:02:02there's a 5k trail run that
- 1:02:04they somehow figure out how
- 1:02:05to do something like that
- 1:02:06that would be sick um now
- 1:02:08that's also weather
- 1:02:09dependent that puts them in
- 1:02:10a bind so I could see year
- 1:02:12one they could be like hey
- 1:02:13you know what let's not we
- 1:02:16have so many athletes let's
- 1:02:17just control this
- 1:02:18environment but indoors is
- 1:02:20fine and it's in birmingham
- 1:02:23we're all going to get super sweaty.
- 1:02:24The humidity will be, will be a factor.
- 1:02:27Um, but Madison has humidity.
- 1:02:29Madison has heat.
- 1:02:30Madison makes me sweaty too.
- 1:02:31I got to change my clothes
- 1:02:32after a games workout.
- 1:02:34Um, so no big deal, but indoors is also,
- 1:02:37it's just safe.
- 1:02:37Like we're not going to have
- 1:02:38any weather delays.
- 1:02:39There's no issues.
- 1:02:40They got a lot of people to get through.
- 1:02:41And I hate,
- 1:02:43I hate when we have weather
- 1:02:44delays that mess things up
- 1:02:45because that happens every
- 1:02:46year at the games or change
- 1:02:48a workout or change a workout.
- 1:02:50Yeah.
- 1:02:51Right.
- 1:02:52I'm ready for legless rope climbs.
- 1:02:54Don't change it.
- 1:02:57Three fields of play.
- 1:02:59Awesome.
- 1:03:01That's awesome.
- 1:03:03We can have longer workouts.
- 1:03:05I think one of our experiences at Legends,
- 1:03:07they had a lot of athletes there.
- 1:03:09We were working out.
- 1:03:11They were running Legends
- 1:03:12from 8 in the morning until 9, 30,
- 1:03:1410 o'clock at night.
- 1:03:15That was a lot with two fields of play.
- 1:03:19Had to keep the workouts
- 1:03:20under certain time caps.
- 1:03:22I think the longest may have
- 1:03:23been a 60-minute time cap out at Legends.
- 1:03:25I can't remember.
- 1:03:26But three huge floors.
- 1:03:29give us more time again I'm
- 1:03:31talking selfishly give me
- 1:03:32more time and I i love it
- 1:03:35the more time on the field
- 1:03:36the better um but also fast
- 1:03:38workouts are great too you
- 1:03:39know heavy lifts are great
- 1:03:41three three floors allows
- 1:03:42for all the athletes to get
- 1:03:44a full experience and have
- 1:03:46what did bob say eight plus
- 1:03:48events hell yeah that's
- 1:03:50awesome every year at the
- 1:03:51games for the past few years
- 1:03:54You always felt like they were really,
- 1:03:55really tightening it up
- 1:03:57with either less events, shorter events,
- 1:03:5910 males,
- 1:04:0010 females on the field at one time,
- 1:04:03really, really squeezing us together.
- 1:04:06I'm okay with all of that,
- 1:04:07but if you give us nine events, oh,
- 1:04:09it's awesome.
- 1:04:1010 events, 12, you know,
- 1:04:12and Legends has done that in the past.
- 1:04:14They always have four days
- 1:04:16of competition and
- 1:04:18sometimes two to three events in a day.
- 1:04:20It's just amazing.
- 1:04:21Love it.
- 1:04:24Um,
- 1:04:26Bob talked about wanting to be
- 1:04:27centrally located for European athletes,
- 1:04:31for South American athletes, um,
- 1:04:35and not going with his home
- 1:04:36state of California.
- 1:04:39Yep.
- 1:04:39I know you live in Birmingham.
- 1:04:41What do you,
- 1:04:41do you think the Masters
- 1:04:43community as a whole is happy?
- 1:04:46It's centrally located.
- 1:04:47Um, yeah.
- 1:04:50Wow, that's a good question.
- 1:04:51I mean,
- 1:04:53centrally located to me feels like Denver,
- 1:04:54but that's where I lived.
- 1:04:55But Denver is isolated.
- 1:04:57It's far from anything.
- 1:05:00What's fun about Birmingham
- 1:05:02in a centrally located perspective,
- 1:05:05it's pretty close to Florida.
- 1:05:06It's very close to Tennessee.
- 1:05:08I mean, I think we border Tennessee.
- 1:05:10I think.
- 1:05:10No, I know we border from Tennessee.
- 1:05:14We're a drive for quite a few athletes,
- 1:05:19but a very easy flight.
- 1:05:20A lot of people flew to Madison.
- 1:05:23You'd fly to Chicago and
- 1:05:24then drive to Madison.
- 1:05:25Or if you flew to Madison,
- 1:05:26it was a huge pain.
- 1:05:27Birmingham has a ton of flights.
- 1:05:31I've got direct flights to
- 1:05:32Denver all day long if I ever need one,
- 1:05:34which is where I was from.
- 1:05:37But Atlanta is the largest airport.
- 1:05:40I don't know.
- 1:05:40It's top five in the world or something.
- 1:05:42It's two hours away.
- 1:05:44So for international flights,
- 1:05:46Atlanta is the hub and it's
- 1:05:48just that's a super smart
- 1:05:50strategic place to be.
- 1:05:52And there's probably a
- 1:05:54flight every hour from
- 1:05:55Birmingham to Atlanta and back and forth.
- 1:05:57So it's great for everyone
- 1:05:59except Australia, right?
- 1:06:00I don't we don't have a lot
- 1:06:01of not a lot of countries in the east,
- 1:06:04but Australia.
- 1:06:06Shout out to Kane Hayes down there,
- 1:06:08who is aging up into my division.
- 1:06:10He's going to travel for like 39 hours.
- 1:06:12And good, good,
- 1:06:14because he's a formidable foe.
- 1:06:16Give that guy as much travel as possible.
- 1:06:20Not really, Kane, if you're listening.
- 1:06:22But I think it's very easy to fly to.
- 1:06:25Very easy to fly to.
- 1:06:26And the town itself is easy to navigate.
- 1:06:29There's a ton within range of...
- 1:06:31of uh of the j whatever the
- 1:06:35convention center where
- 1:06:36it's at yeah the bjcc I
- 1:06:39live um I live 20 20 miles
- 1:06:42away so it's a 25 minute
- 1:06:43drive on the highway for me
- 1:06:44to get there um anybody who
- 1:06:46wants to come to town
- 1:06:47there's going to be tons of
- 1:06:48airbnbs or whatever vrbo is
- 1:06:51available compared to madison
- 1:06:53or Masters Fitness
- 1:06:55Collective in Fort Wayne, Indiana,
- 1:06:57there's no Airbnbs.
- 1:06:59You have to find a hotel
- 1:07:00that has a kitchen, which we did.
- 1:07:03We all like to cook our own food.
- 1:07:05I'm lucky enough to sleep in my own bed.
- 1:07:07Again,
- 1:07:07I've traveled to the games for three
- 1:07:10years in an RV, so I slept in my own bed.
- 1:07:13I just don't know how lucky
- 1:07:15I got on this one.
- 1:07:15But centrally located,
- 1:07:17from a flying perspective,
- 1:07:19Absolutely.
- 1:07:21Um,
- 1:07:21a flight over the pond to Atlanta is
- 1:07:22super simple.
- 1:07:24So I want,
- 1:07:25I want all the European competitors.
- 1:07:27I can't wait to see all
- 1:07:28those guys again and gals.
- 1:07:32So then this is the biggest
- 1:07:34blow I think to Jamie and I,
- 1:07:37and that is teams and
- 1:07:38masters on the same day.
- 1:07:41Yeah.
- 1:07:41It's a bummer.
- 1:07:42We were really gearing up.
- 1:07:44We have a whole team channel
- 1:07:46on our YouTube.
- 1:07:47And, um,
- 1:07:49we wanted to cover both with
- 1:07:52full team and we're not
- 1:07:54going to be able to now.
- 1:07:56Yep.
- 1:07:57Bob said, not going to happen again.
- 1:08:00Joe said in the statement to me,
- 1:08:01we're going to wait and see.
- 1:08:05I mean,
- 1:08:05I think Joe said in a separate
- 1:08:09podcast that they really
- 1:08:11wanted to try to do
- 1:08:11something together because
- 1:08:12they're pretty tight as teams.
- 1:08:15That would be something that
- 1:08:16would be really interesting
- 1:08:17if they were to somehow
- 1:08:19find a venue that was large
- 1:08:20enough to accommodate both teams.
- 1:08:23wow I mean talk about like
- 1:08:25viewership uh the ability
- 1:08:26to have everything
- 1:08:27consolidated um you know
- 1:08:29the leverage in the numbers
- 1:08:31would just be amazing so if
- 1:08:32they are somehow able to
- 1:08:34collaborate and make that
- 1:08:35something in the future of
- 1:08:36course your team is going
- 1:08:36to be working double time
- 1:08:38on one weekend but at least
- 1:08:40not separated right um
- 1:08:42separation is tough and and
- 1:08:44yeah I mean it is um that it
- 1:08:48If all these were broadcast,
- 1:08:49if the teens and the
- 1:08:50masters were broadcast and
- 1:08:51we had these huge broadcast teams,
- 1:08:53it could be one of those
- 1:08:54amazing weekends to watch.
- 1:08:58I don't think budget's going
- 1:08:59to allow for that in year one.
- 1:09:00Um, but yeah, that is, it is,
- 1:09:04it's unfortunate.
- 1:09:04And, you know,
- 1:09:05I think there was lots of
- 1:09:06questions on why Bob chose that weekend,
- 1:09:08knowing that the team, uh,
- 1:09:10championship is that weekend as well.
- 1:09:12And they just didn't have options.
- 1:09:13There was just no time and
- 1:09:14no options on year one,
- 1:09:16but I do believe that in year two,
- 1:09:17they will do everything
- 1:09:19they can to try to find the
- 1:09:20right fit there.
- 1:09:22Um,
- 1:09:23so if it's together that's
- 1:09:24awesome two separate
- 1:09:25weekends even better all of
- 1:09:26those happening prior to
- 1:09:28the big event uh would be
- 1:09:31you know phenomenal yeah
- 1:09:34and bummer for your I mean
- 1:09:35yeah for those coaches that
- 1:09:36have the coach masters and teens
- 1:09:40Yeah, that's hard.
- 1:09:41It's a bummer.
- 1:09:43If you need to submit a master's coach,
- 1:09:45if you have an athlete
- 1:09:46that's their first time there,
- 1:09:48tell them to reach out to me.
- 1:09:49I can offer some assistance.
- 1:09:51Anything that I can do to
- 1:09:52help somebody with their
- 1:09:54first games experience.
- 1:09:57I've never had a coach there
- 1:09:59that helps me strategize.
- 1:10:00I've always done that on my own.
- 1:10:03But I'm happy to help show
- 1:10:04someone the ropes.
- 1:10:07We all talk behind the scenes anyway.
- 1:10:08It's a funny thing.
- 1:10:09Once you get there,
- 1:10:11I'm not always strategizing
- 1:10:12with the guys in my age group,
- 1:10:13but I am strategizing with
- 1:10:15everyone outside of my age group, right?
- 1:10:18I want to know when someone
- 1:10:19walks off the field,
- 1:10:21this was the best event.
- 1:10:22In 2021,
- 1:10:23we had a workout that started off
- 1:10:24with 20 ring muscle-ups.
- 1:10:27was our age group 20 ring
- 1:10:28muscle ups into like this
- 1:10:29this sprint and then we did
- 1:10:32snatches into a sprint and
- 1:10:33then rowing into a sprint
- 1:10:33but the first thing was 20
- 1:10:35ring muscle ups and I was
- 1:10:36preparing for that I was
- 1:10:37thinking I'll break it up
- 1:10:38into like 12 and 8 or 14 6
- 1:10:40or I you know something but
- 1:10:42it was windy and the straps
- 1:10:44are super long so it's
- 1:10:45super risky to come down so
- 1:10:48I was preparing uh rick my
- 1:10:50co-host on my podcast he
- 1:10:51had just come off the field
- 1:10:53in the 50 plus division
- 1:10:54he's like yeah I went 15 unbroken
- 1:10:57was like rick went 15
- 1:10:59unbroken okay and I know my
- 1:11:02capacity compared to rick
- 1:11:03if rick could go 15
- 1:11:04unbroken I think I can go
- 1:11:05for 20. and I went out
- 1:11:07there and I gambled big
- 1:11:09time and went 20. i mean my
- 1:11:11last rep was like I mean
- 1:11:13it's one of those last
- 1:11:14muscles where you catch it
- 1:11:15and if you don't I mean you're just
- 1:11:18If I don't get this muscle up,
- 1:11:19it's going to take me
- 1:11:20another two minutes to finish one more.
- 1:11:22And luckily I got through 20,
- 1:11:23but it's those little
- 1:11:25things that you learn at the games.
- 1:11:27Like you watch,
- 1:11:28you're trying to find the
- 1:11:29TV that's on the field before you.
- 1:11:30So you see what it's,
- 1:11:31what does this workout
- 1:11:32doing to the teenagers?
- 1:11:34Okay.
- 1:11:34Okay.
- 1:11:34So they're pulling.
- 1:11:35Okay.
- 1:11:36They're not slowing down here.
- 1:11:37You learn all of this kind
- 1:11:38of fun stuff in person.
- 1:11:39So masters athletes,
- 1:11:41this would be my advice to coaches.
- 1:11:43If you have a masters
- 1:11:44athlete and a teenager,
- 1:11:45you've got to go with the teenager.
- 1:11:47The Masters athlete can fend
- 1:11:48for themselves.
- 1:11:48Like, we'll be okay.
- 1:11:49We'll all support each other.
- 1:11:50You don't send a team by themselves.
- 1:11:52Like, go be with your team.
- 1:11:54Wouldn't you say?
- 1:11:55I would agree with you completely.
- 1:11:58The trick is that some
- 1:12:00Masters athletes are team coaches.
- 1:12:04Oh, I know.
- 1:12:05I know.
- 1:12:06In those situations, you're hosed.
- 1:12:09Just hosed, man.
- 1:12:11And then you're not
- 1:12:11competing as the Master.
- 1:12:13That's how it goes.
- 1:12:14It's the year that you don't get to go,
- 1:12:15right?
- 1:12:18You have a huge contingent
- 1:12:20of... It was evident at Legends.
- 1:12:22Your Boulder athlete has grown.
- 1:12:23You have a ton of athletes.
- 1:12:25I take it you have no teen athletes.
- 1:12:28It's typically an older crowd?
- 1:12:29Yeah, it is Masters training.
- 1:12:32Straight up Masters training.
- 1:12:33Now, interestingly...
- 1:12:36it would be great for teenagers too.
- 1:12:38Um,
- 1:12:39the needs of masters athletes and
- 1:12:41teenagers are very similar.
- 1:12:42So for example,
- 1:12:43like we need to do smart volume.
- 1:12:45We need to be careful with our volume.
- 1:12:47Um, and teenagers actually do too.
- 1:12:50The 17, 18 year olds,
- 1:12:51maybe not quite as much.
- 1:12:52They've got a lot of natural
- 1:12:54healing remedies just
- 1:12:55flowing through their veins all day long,
- 1:12:57but 14, 15 year olds, um,
- 1:13:01know that they it's we're
- 1:13:02very similar I actually
- 1:13:03have um one of our boulder
- 1:13:05athletes his son is a 14
- 1:13:07year old looking to go to
- 1:13:07the games and he does the
- 1:13:09exact work his dad does
- 1:13:11which is athlete training
- 1:13:13and this kid is crushing it
- 1:13:15um because it makes sense
- 1:13:1614 15 year olds and 40 year
- 1:13:18olds should have pretty
- 1:13:19similar training the 14 15
- 1:13:21year olds shouldn't be
- 1:13:22doing what 25 year olds are
- 1:13:23doing and neither should 40
- 1:13:24year olds so it
- 1:13:26I don't think we'll ever
- 1:13:27cross that bridge and call
- 1:13:28it the Boulder Athlete Masters and 14,
- 1:13:3015-year-old training program.
- 1:13:33But it would be fun.
- 1:13:35But yeah,
- 1:13:35there's a good amount of Boulder
- 1:13:38athletes out there.
- 1:13:41One of the things that was
- 1:13:41fun about Legends was
- 1:13:42having that contingent.
- 1:13:43I think we had 14 or 15
- 1:13:44athletes out there.
- 1:13:47We all collaborated.
- 1:13:49It was really fun.
- 1:13:50Like, oh, hey, someone's going.
- 1:13:51So we all go down and watch
- 1:13:53someone and cheer them on, right?
- 1:13:54If we could,
- 1:13:55unless someone's warming up or whatever.
- 1:13:59But yeah, we had a lot of fun with that.
- 1:14:00You can really support each
- 1:14:01other when you have a solid team.
- 1:14:03So that's another factor.
- 1:14:05And we'll adopt somebody if they need one,
- 1:14:08even if they don't follow
- 1:14:09the programming.
- 1:14:10Come on over.
- 1:14:11We'll help you.
- 1:14:12And then, you know,
- 1:14:15get up on the podium next to me is fine.
- 1:14:18Here's my last question.
- 1:14:20I mean, there's a lot on my notes,
- 1:14:22but we're going to finish
- 1:14:24it up with this because
- 1:14:25we're going to have you
- 1:14:26back on throughout the season.
- 1:14:28Happy to.
- 1:14:28Happy to.
- 1:14:31When it was announced, the team piece.
- 1:14:34One, Lana has been in the chat.
- 1:14:36Lana, you get in your 70 plus as a trial.
- 1:14:40I could not be more stoked for that.
- 1:14:43Super excited.
- 1:14:44Let people know what's possible.
- 1:14:46But with the team thing,
- 1:14:49if I'm an individual athlete
- 1:14:53and it's year one and I
- 1:14:54already know it's going to
- 1:14:56be clunky why add more
- 1:14:59burden to my plate in year
- 1:15:02one yeah I think it's a
- 1:15:04great idea yes year one true
- 1:15:10So that's a good question.
- 1:15:11It's year one for this
- 1:15:13experience of the games,
- 1:15:14for the collaboration, right?
- 1:15:16But it's not their first
- 1:15:17rodeo running a large event
- 1:15:20with a team or with a team
- 1:15:22event at the same time.
- 1:15:24They did this at Legends in
- 1:15:25a constricted field, right?
- 1:15:28Field of play, very constricted.
- 1:15:30And the teams had a great event.
- 1:15:34I mean, they all loved it.
- 1:15:35They didn't have enough events.
- 1:15:37They only had two days worth of events.
- 1:15:39And so that was, I think,
- 1:15:40part of their feedback.
- 1:15:41I know the team event at the
- 1:15:43games will have three days
- 1:15:44of competition.
- 1:15:46But I think it was a
- 1:15:48necessary... I think it was brilliant,
- 1:15:50first of all.
- 1:15:50It was brilliant to take on
- 1:15:52additional competitors,
- 1:15:55which will bring more human
- 1:15:57beings to the event,
- 1:15:59more fans to watch the
- 1:16:00teams and the individuals,
- 1:16:02more overall athletes,
- 1:16:03more revenue that can help
- 1:16:04support the event.
- 1:16:06And honestly, the more people, the more...
- 1:16:09buzz around that whole thing,
- 1:16:11the better it is for the
- 1:16:13future of the Masters games.
- 1:16:15If there is social media,
- 1:16:17when there are still
- 1:16:18pictures and there's a
- 1:16:19crowd behind somebody,
- 1:16:21that looks better than at
- 1:16:23the games when there's a
- 1:16:24person in some empty stands.
- 1:16:27where the games venue was
- 1:16:28too big to make the masters
- 1:16:30look special this will be a
- 1:16:31nice concise event with a
- 1:16:34ton of human beings a lot
- 1:16:35like legends in phoenix
- 1:16:37where when every event I
- 1:16:38mean it looks like it's a
- 1:16:39packed house and you
- 1:16:40actually did have to kind
- 1:16:41of shuffle your way through
- 1:16:43to see someone there and
- 1:16:44that's a that's a fun
- 1:16:45experience for the athletes
- 1:16:46to look out there and see like
- 1:16:48All these people watching,
- 1:16:50I'm doing my PR clean and jerk,
- 1:16:53and there is someone I know
- 1:16:55eight feet standing in
- 1:16:56front of me while I'm doing this thing.
- 1:16:58Hopefully, I'm not spittling on them.
- 1:17:01So it is an increased workload, Scott.
- 1:17:03And so your point is,
- 1:17:05why take on this additional workload?
- 1:17:06And I think, one,
- 1:17:08they have some experience doing it.
- 1:17:09I think they'll be okay.
- 1:17:10Two...
- 1:17:11It draws more revenue and
- 1:17:12all those extra people.
- 1:17:13And they're just willing to, you know,
- 1:17:16put in all the extra
- 1:17:17overtime for that trade-off, right?
- 1:17:20More athletes, more people, more revenue,
- 1:17:22more attention in that area instead of,
- 1:17:26however many, 400 plus athletes.
- 1:17:27We'll have 600 plus athletes
- 1:17:29and potentially families
- 1:17:31and friends and all the people.
- 1:17:33Not to mention Birmingham is
- 1:17:34a thriving CrossFit community.
- 1:17:38It's crazy how big CrossFit
- 1:17:40is in this huge metro area
- 1:17:44compared to any place I've been.
- 1:17:45I'm constantly surprised at how big it is.
- 1:17:47So I think we'll have a lot
- 1:17:48of local viewership down here as well.
- 1:17:50People can drive from Nashville, Cookville,
- 1:17:53I mean, anywhere in Tennessee in two,
- 1:17:54three hours.
- 1:17:55It's close.
- 1:17:56draw from atlanta as well um
- 1:17:59anyway I think yeah I think
- 1:18:01they bite it off the team
- 1:18:03competition they've got
- 1:18:04some experience with it I
- 1:18:06think they can do it really
- 1:18:07well I have no idea what
- 1:18:09it's going to look like to
- 1:18:09have this simultaneous
- 1:18:11competition happening the
- 1:18:13games and the team's
- 1:18:14community event I don't
- 1:18:15know how all that will
- 1:18:16shake out what that'll end
- 1:18:17up looking like um
- 1:18:19You know, maybe different shirts.
- 1:18:21I don't know.
- 1:18:22But I'm not overly worried about it.
- 1:18:25I just love the idea that, like,
- 1:18:26last night we did a podcast
- 1:18:28with Bob Ruano.
- 1:18:29He's a six-time games athlete.
- 1:18:31He's 54 this year.
- 1:18:33He's Mr. Consistency.
- 1:18:34Awesome, energetic dude.
- 1:18:36And he's like, you know, I'm 54.
- 1:18:38I'm a little bit beat up.
- 1:18:38I don't think I'm going to
- 1:18:39do the individual this year.
- 1:18:42And then Teams shows up.
- 1:18:43He's like,
- 1:18:43but I think I may do it for
- 1:18:45Teams because that sounds like fun.
- 1:18:47So you have this...
- 1:18:50an extra group of people that, yeah,
- 1:18:51I mean, when I'm 49,
- 1:18:54I'll probably still try to
- 1:18:55go for it again at the games, yada, yada.
- 1:18:57But there is this temptation like, oh,
- 1:18:59a team event for one year?
- 1:19:01Take all that pressure off?
- 1:19:02Man, that sounds like fun.
- 1:19:05So there's a lot of,
- 1:19:07all those positives go along with it.
- 1:19:09And then
- 1:19:11It could be this teaser.
- 1:19:13What if there was a CrossFit
- 1:19:14Masters team event?
- 1:19:16I mean, a games team Masters division.
- 1:19:20If that was something that
- 1:19:20showed up in the next few
- 1:19:21years and you had to
- 1:19:22qualify as a team for Masters games,
- 1:19:25that would be a pretty cool
- 1:19:26addition to expand
- 1:19:28everything that we have
- 1:19:29available to us as Masters.
- 1:19:32You know,
- 1:19:32I can age up into 50 and once I'm 53,
- 1:19:34it's like, hey,
- 1:19:36I'm going team for two years.
- 1:19:37You know,
- 1:19:38like I'm done with individuals
- 1:19:39until I'm 55.
- 1:19:40That could be an interesting
- 1:19:41way to promote longevity in
- 1:19:43the sport and keep people engaged,
- 1:19:44you know?
- 1:19:46Well,
- 1:19:46thank you for that perspective
- 1:19:48because it does give me a
- 1:19:49different outlook on it.
- 1:19:51One,
- 1:19:51the pro that I see is it's also a
- 1:19:54feeder system.
- 1:19:55Those people right on the
- 1:19:56cusp of making the games
- 1:19:58and experience on a competition floor.
- 1:20:03But the one con I see is we
- 1:20:06can't get the elite team stuff right.
- 1:20:10you know?
- 1:20:11Yeah.
- 1:20:12A lot of logistics.
- 1:20:13I would say that the masters out,
- 1:20:18there were more people in
- 1:20:19the stands for the masters
- 1:20:21than for the teams.
- 1:20:23Yes.
- 1:20:24Agreed.
- 1:20:26Agreed.
- 1:20:26From a spectator perspective, it's yeah.
- 1:20:29It's weird at the games.
- 1:20:30You'd see that the place
- 1:20:31clear out if there wasn't like, I mean,
- 1:20:34when froning was on teams, uh,
- 1:20:36That was it.
- 1:20:38He drew his own audience.
- 1:20:40But it really cleared out for teams.
- 1:20:41And so from a spectator perspective,
- 1:20:43you're right.
- 1:20:44There's so much going on.
- 1:20:49You can't keep track of it.
- 1:20:50It's too broad in the sport
- 1:20:52to know what's going on.
- 1:20:54The final team event, you're like, OK,
- 1:20:56yeah, I want to watch that.
- 1:20:56That could be fun.
- 1:20:59But it's just so funny
- 1:21:00because the experience of
- 1:21:01being on a team is night
- 1:21:04and day compared to being an individual.
- 1:21:05It's so much fun to be on a team.
- 1:21:08So, yeah,
- 1:21:09I don't know how they navigate
- 1:21:10that bridge between, like, no one,
- 1:21:12without saying it like this,
- 1:21:13but people don't watch teams very much.
- 1:21:16But the experience of being
- 1:21:17on a team is so great.
- 1:21:19Maybe it stays a community event forever.
- 1:21:21I'm not sure.
- 1:21:22But I just know that, like,
- 1:21:24I'm doing my first team
- 1:21:24event at Wadapalooza,
- 1:21:26California this year.
- 1:21:28I can't wait to be on a team.
- 1:21:30It's going to be so much fun.
- 1:21:32I've got a couple of beefcakes on my team.
- 1:21:34These are like some legit
- 1:21:36athletes that reached out to me,
- 1:21:38and they wanted me to help
- 1:21:40round out their age group.
- 1:21:42I'm like, OK, I'm the old guy.
- 1:21:44um yeah we'll go out there
- 1:21:45and have some fun as long
- 1:21:46as we don't swim in the
- 1:21:47pacific ocean I'll be good
- 1:21:48to go but I i think the
- 1:21:49teams yeah I think there's
- 1:21:52a ton of there's a ton of
- 1:21:53fun being on a team but
- 1:21:55yeah that spectator
- 1:21:56experience is it's tough
- 1:21:58the logistics of running a
- 1:21:59team events as well I think
- 1:22:00the games gets a little
- 1:22:02creative overly creative
- 1:22:04with their team events
- 1:22:05sometimes like synchronized double unders
- 1:22:08Bob and Joe won't do that.
- 1:22:10They've got judges that need
- 1:22:12to manage a four-person team.
- 1:22:15Got to keep that stuff simple.
- 1:22:17Yeah.
- 1:22:18Jamie,
- 1:22:20do you have anything to finish up with?
- 1:22:22No, I'm good.
- 1:22:25Y'all are great.
- 1:22:27This was fun.
- 1:22:28As always, we love having you on.
- 1:22:30We love your perspective.
- 1:22:33We'll continue to do this
- 1:22:34through the season for sure.
- 1:22:38And before we go tonight,
- 1:22:41Jamie and I will be back
- 1:22:42with Thursday Night

- 1:22:52filling in for me there.
- 1:22:53And then tomorrow, Cheryl Nassau and I,
