Latest / Money Grows on Trees / #253 - How Apple & Coke Win at Inflation
Transcript
- 0:00One of the most powerful companies in the world when it comes to pricing power is,
- 0:03you guessed it, Apple. Because people would
- 0:06trade their second car in to get their hands on one of these. Like the pricing, this
- 0:10is probably worth $30,000 to people, not 1500 bucks. It's
- 0:13got so much pricing power in it. And I know that because I
- 0:17know that people would literally trade their cars to get this. And I know cars
- 0:20cost 30,000. So this is really a $30,000 product, but
- 0:23it's not being sold for that. So Apple knows it can incrementally increase
- 0:27the prices like this, over and over again to
- 0:30combat inflation because they know that people are still going to buy this because it's such a valuable
- 0:34commodity to people, right? The same sort of thing. I can see over there in the fridge there's a
- 0:37can of Coke in there. Another example of a company that can actually outperform
- 0:41inflation is Coca-Cola because Coca-Cola has
- 0:45the ability to increase each can by one cent. Over
- 0:498 billion cans consumed daily. Think
- 0:53about that. Some huge number of cans consumed daily
- 0:56can increase it by one cent. It's almost 2 billion cans of Coke consumed
- 1:00daily. So you think if Coke can increase it by a cent, it's
- 1:04increasing it by like 2 billion cents a day. Isn't
- 1:07that insane? So it's got pricing power, so it can outperform inflation. So
- 1:11check this out. Look at what Warren Buffett's doing right now. Look
- 1:14at this. He knows that the US dollar is inflating. He
- 1:18knows that, and I'm talking about the Australian dollar, but the US dollar is also inflating. He knows this. So
- 1:21he's positioned his portfolio into bonds, which
- 1:25helps hedge inflation a bit because you're getting 4.5%. He's putting his
- 1:28money into oil stocks hedge, and
- 1:31he also owns Coca-Cola as a company. His highest
- 1:35position is Apple. Think about this. And he's got
- 1:38Moody's. So all these companies in his top five or six holdings, which
- 1:42takes over most of his portfolio and other private
- 1:45companies he owns, he's got pricing power. See his candy. Big,
- 1:49big powerful company. He bought that for $25 million many years ago. It's worth
- 1:52billions now. And it can increase its candy prices to
- 1:56combat inflation because people will still want to buy its product. So he's
- 1:59got tremendous hedge in inflationary pressures with his
- 2:02holdings and businesses. So, companies can raise prices in
- 2:06inflationary times. This happened during the GFC, the
- 2:10S&P 500 soared because of rising money supply. Owning an
- 2:13index fund, if you've got companies in there like Microsoft, Google,
- 2:17Apple, etc., Coca-Cola, they can increase their prices. McDonald's,
- 2:21the Big Mac index. When you went to McDonald's recently,
- 2:24I bet you were shocked by the price of stuff. Yes, it
- 2:28hurts. It used to be you could go to McDonald's at $5.95 for a meal. a
- 2:33house to get a meal at McDonald's. It's the
- 2:37Big Mac Index. McDonald's is a perfect example of a company and
- 2:40a business that can increase its prices. Why? Because it has. So
- 2:44if you want to hedge inflation, businesses are a wonderful way to do it.
- 2:47That's how I do it. That's how I do it. So I'm excited that
- 2:51I own certain companies that are hedged with oil stocks. I'm
- 2:54excited that we have businesses that are hedged in products
- 2:58and services that people need. Super, super
- 3:01effective way to do it, right? So you can either get it through some sort of
- 3:05index, you can get it through ownership of businesses, private or
- 3:08public. All right, next one. This is the last one. The
- 3:11best hedge of all time. We said the best to last.
- 3:15This is the best hedge against inflation of all time. It's
- 3:20the fastest way to outrun inflation. And unlike
- 3:23cash, it can compound very powerfully. So
- 3:27check it out. You're going to be thrilled or you're going to be
- 3:30disappointed, be the one. Here we go. The best way to
- 3:34hedge inflation is to actually increase your skills. The best way to
- 3:37hedge inflation is to earn more money. The fastest way to outrun it
- 3:41is to earn more. Unlike cash, skills can compound drastically.
- 3:44You can end up finding skills that you can totally transform your earning power
- 3:48with and your income is the most important thing you can do to enhance
- 3:51your wealth. It really is. You can't save your way to wealth. You can do it for a
- 3:55period of time but you can't get it down to nothing. So, there's
- 3:59an example in, I mean, many examples in the past where there's inflations
- 4:03crushed the economy. I know without a doubt that people in that economy
- 4:07with skills, sought after skills, were still getting paid a ton of
- 4:10money in all sorts of different currencies and or gold and
- 4:13or in barter to apply their skills to the economy.
- 4:17Okay, so it doesn't, if you've got skills, people will find a
- 4:20way to give you something of value to get them. So it doesn't really matter if
- 4:23your local currency, like the Australian dollar is completely, you know, getting, It's
- 4:28completely collapsed in the last few years in terms of its value, but... I
- 4:32know that if I've got skills, I can get paid in gold, I can get
- 4:35paid in US dollars, I can get paid in barter. Like if I'm
- 4:38good at what I do and people need it, they will find a way to pay me.
- 4:42Even if the currency is toilet paper, I know during COVID when there's a lot of toilet paper,
- 4:45I could have provided a skill to someone. So Lloyd, I'll pay you in toilet paper. Go,
- 4:49give me the toilet paper. It doesn't really matter what it is, your skills are
- 4:52inflation proof. And it doesn't matter if the global currency
- 4:56is crypto, USD, gold, Bada,
- 5:00whatever, your skills transcend all
- 5:04of the global currencies, all of them. So the
- 5:07most important thing you can do is improve your
- 5:10knowledge and skills because they are inflation proof. They will ride inflation way
- 5:14up because there's people out there with skills. Think about
- 5:17it. Think about Mark Zuckerberg. He's now like the
- 5:21top three or four wealthiest people in the world. He's also the youngest in
- 5:24that group. Think about the skills that he applied. He
- 5:28became a multi, he became worth $100 billion. Do
- 5:32you think that outperformed inflation? Yes. Do you think Jeff Bezos outperformed inflation?
- 5:36Yes. Do you think Warren Buffett outperformed inflation? Yes. All
- 5:39the people I know who are wealthy, a lot of my friends who are worth millions of dollars, how
- 5:43did they get there? Did they buy gold? No. Did they buy real
- 5:46estate? No, they didn't. They might say they do now to protect their
- 5:50wealth, but they didn't get there that way, let me tell you. They all did it through actually
- 5:54improving their skills and starting and building their own businesses. That's how
- 5:58they did it. So don't, and some people
- 6:02have certainly, there's a story of a lady, she just gave
- 6:05a billion dollars to a charity. Her husband
- 6:08happened to invest with Warren Buffett, that's stocks, that's Berkshire Hathaway, and
- 6:12ride that sucker way up to a billion dollars, and of course,
- 6:15incredibly powerful hedge, because Warren Buffett in
- 6:19the last 60 years created 5.5 million percent return. To
- 6:23put that in perspective, the S&P 500, 30,000 percent return. To
- 6:27put that in perspective, it way outperformed inflation. Inflation hasn't
- 6:30been anywhere close to those two numbers. So stocks and businesses, yes,
- 6:34can also outperform it. But for most part, it's businesses
- 6:38because of skills. So if you want the ultimate hedge, invest
- 6:41in yourself. You are the ultimate hedge. You are the best asset to
- 6:45invest in to overcome inflation. So could hyperinflation happen
- 6:49in Australia? Could we absolutely destroy the power of
- 6:52the Australian dollar? Theoretically, yes. Will
- 6:55it happen? Technically, well, technically yes, but theoretically or
- 6:59I would say no. It's unlikely because
- 7:03we've got a floating exchange rate. We've got an independent reserve
- 7:06bank. We've got global trading partners. We've got a ton of resources
- 7:10here, deep capital markets. And we do have, despite the
- 7:13challenging leadership we have at the minute, that's a whole other episode of what I think about
- 7:17that. But we do have the ability to control money supply.
- 7:21And we do have hard assets backing. We've got land,
- 7:24arable land. We've got farming, commodities. We've got resources, energy,
- 7:29hydrocarbons. We're good. But if
- 7:32hyperinflation does happen, Like what happened in Germany, what happened in
- 7:35Venezuela, what happened in Zimbabwe. In those scenarios, you know what happened?
- 7:39People fled back. They just dropped the currency. They went back to other currencies. They
- 7:43went back to the US dollar. They went back to gold. That's what happened. The
- 7:47economy doesn't die. The paper money is just forgotten. All trust is
- 7:51broken and we stop using it. So it's not like you'll just have nothing.
- 7:54You will have figured out by then if there's hyperinflation what does work and
- 7:57you'll have already gone there. But I can almost guarantee you that if
- 8:01you have business skills and you have the ability to pivot and you
- 8:04buy businesses and build businesses, there's no amount
- 8:07of inflation that can hurt you because you are indestructible because
- 8:11you invested in yourself. And of course, one of the other hedges
- 8:14that's happening that I haven't really covered here because I don't want to is cryptocurrencies, especially
- 8:18Bitcoin. They're like, oh, Bitcoin's a hedge against inflation. Oh,
- 8:23my God. Do I have to talk about Bitcoin? It's a code. It's
- 8:26a piece of code. And people like, read the Bitcoin standard. How
- 8:30much research do you have to do to realize something's valueless? Look,
- 8:35people are using crypto and specifically Bitcoin as an inflation hedge.
- 8:39But the fact of the matter is this, gold has got thousands of
- 8:43years of measurable data against inflation than
- 8:47crypto does. It's tangible. Remember, the inflation hedge
- 8:50is against tangible assets, right? Things that can
- 8:54produce value for the world. Crypto doesn't produce any value.
- 8:58How do I know that? Because I went down to the supermarket, With my wife,
- 9:01we were doing a checkout and I said to the lady, ìHey, do you take cryptocurrency for
- 9:05my groceries?î She went, ìNo.î I was like, ìPfft.î Then I went to my landlord the
- 9:08other day, my property manager and he called up and said, ìHey, you owe rent.î Iím like, ìOh, do
- 9:11you take Bitcoin?î He goes, ìPfft.î So Iím like, ìOkay.î So
- 9:15I rang up my American Express. I got an American Express card, platinum card. Itís a wonderful card,
- 9:19lots of points. I rang him up the other day and I had like $100,000 to repay
- 9:23on that. I said, ìHey, do you take cryptocurrency? Do you take Bitcoin?î They
- 9:27went, ìPfft.î How
- 9:31is crypto or Bitcoin a hedge when it's not even valuable?
- 9:36I can't use it for anything. At least I
- 9:40can sell gold on the open market. I can sell it.
- 9:44You can touch it. You feel it. Even though I hate gold, I can at
- 9:47least see it's there. You can't see anything with crypto. It's
- 9:51just code. Right? There's
- 9:55certainly value in the technology of a blockchain. There's certainly value in
- 9:58the technology of internet. There's certainly value in technology of AI, LLM
- 10:02models. There's value in those for sure, because they speed up things. Yes? But
- 10:08I can't see it in crypto. And so it might feel
- 10:12like it's a hedge against inflation. By all accounts, if you haven't bought it, it
- 10:15looks like it's hedged. But how they measure it? is
- 10:19in USD, right? And so if the USD disappeared overnight, so
- 10:22would the value of cryptocurrency, right? Because it's really got to be
- 10:25valuable in the real world. And that's why I don't think it's the best hedge. So
- 10:29I don't hold any of it. I never will hold it. Even if the world adopted
- 10:33it as a currency, which I cannot see happening, I would
- 10:36still own businesses. I would still, for that matter, if it
- 10:39was the right price, own a piece of property. I would still own things
- 10:43that are valuable. And I just can't see how it's valuable. This is why I
- 10:46don't personally own gold. I don't personally own crypto. I personally own
- 10:50things that are valuable to the world. Because I know if push
- 10:53came to shove and shit hit the fan, like it did in COVID, did
- 10:57people go to crypto? Nah. Did they go to gold? Nah. They went to toilet
- 11:00paper. So I'm thinking to myself, wouldn't I
- 11:03want to own companies that produce toilet paper? That's a better hedge, right? This
- 11:07is where my mind's at. This is how I think. So I know that people got wealthy
- 11:10by not owning those assets. I know they got wealthy by building businesses and
