- 0:00Speaker 1: Jeff Legwald ESPN dot com, freshly back from his first
- 0:04Speaker 1: scouting journey of the year, which we're going to dive
- 0:06Speaker 1: into here in just a moment, as draft preparation begins
- 0:10Speaker 1: for Jeff Legwald but Legy, we start here.
- 0:12Speaker 2: What do we know.
- 0:13Speaker 1: About all that entails Davis Webb's duties as the offensive
- 0:17Speaker 1: coordinator of the Broncos.
- 0:19Speaker 3: Well, we don't know the answer to the question everybody wants,
- 0:22Speaker 3: which is is he calling plays or not? That has
- 0:27Speaker 3: not been announced that. I mean, my understanding is, uh,
- 0:33Speaker 3: you know, Sean hasn't made a decision on that. Well,
- 0:36Speaker 3: you know, the higher has been made. I gotta believe
- 0:39Speaker 3: that topic was broached at.
- 0:42Speaker 4: Some point, right yeah, yeah.
- 0:46Speaker 3: And you know, and whether or not you know that
- 0:50Speaker 3: the hiring cycle is weird. You know, guys take themselves
- 0:53Speaker 3: out of the running when they're pretty sure they're not
- 0:56Speaker 3: going to get it, so they don't appear to have
- 0:58Speaker 3: failed to get the job, and all all of these things.
- 1:00Speaker 4: It's all so much of it is optic.
- 1:05Speaker 3: But he interviewed for a lot of jobs and could
- 1:07Speaker 3: have had play calling duties with other teams, So you know,
- 1:13Speaker 3: this is if he's not calling plays he's banking on this.
- 1:18Speaker 4: This will lead to bigger.
- 1:19Speaker 3: Things anyway down the road without that, you know, but
- 1:25Speaker 3: until all of us hear from Sean Payton about who's
- 1:28Speaker 3: calling plays. And again I've said, I believe he surrenders
- 1:34Speaker 3: play calling duties when you know he says it or
- 1:38Speaker 3: we don't see him on the on the headset in
- 1:42Speaker 3: the you know, but I will say he he has
- 1:46Speaker 3: taking a long look at the offense, and his willingness
- 1:49Speaker 3: to make change has already been seen. I mean, Joe
- 1:53Speaker 3: Lombardi's been with him fifteen years, Pete Carmichael's been with
- 1:56Speaker 3: him eighteen years, and both those guys are are out.
- 2:02Speaker 3: Carrie Kolbert's out at wide receivers. I mean, this is
- 2:04Speaker 3: a pretty big makeover on the offensive staff. So you know,
- 2:09Speaker 3: the discussions could center around how much power you have
- 2:12Speaker 3: in play calling, you know, Monday through Saturday too. I
- 2:17Speaker 3: mean there's a lot to the job that isn't calling
- 2:19Speaker 3: plays on game day that would help you be a
- 2:23Speaker 3: head coach and all of those things, you know.
- 2:25Speaker 4: And I think.
- 2:27Speaker 3: What we're seeing is what we've talked about on Your
- 2:29Speaker 3: Guys' show, is this is going to be a good
- 2:32Speaker 3: place to be you know, with the facilities and resources
- 2:37Speaker 3: and all of the things you're going to have here,
- 2:40Speaker 3: and man, the grass isn't going to be greener, and
- 2:44Speaker 3: I think guys are going to take their time, especially coaches,
- 2:48Speaker 3: and trying to figure out, you know, where they want
- 2:50Speaker 3: to go next and what would be an upgrade in
- 2:55Speaker 3: that sense. But again, until you know, and we may
- 2:59Speaker 3: not hear from Peyton until the combine or maybe he
- 3:01Speaker 3: does some of the you know, the media swirl at
- 3:05Speaker 3: the super Bowl, But until he says it, you know,
- 3:09Speaker 3: I'm not sure I believe he would fully surrender play
- 3:13Speaker 3: calling duties.
- 3:14Speaker 1: Yeah, I have my skepticism on that as well, Jeff,
- 3:17Speaker 1: I do want to ask you about And I know
- 3:18Speaker 1: this is a reporter from another outlet, but there was
- 3:21Speaker 1: an Ian Rappaport tweet last week, back on January twenty seventh,
- 3:27Speaker 1: and he wrote context for the Bills hiring Joe Brady
- 3:31Speaker 1: as their head coach. He said, Sean Payton wanted Brady
- 3:35Speaker 1: as OC perhaps even with play calling. I'm just curious
- 3:41Speaker 1: what you heard on that very note right there, because I, like,
- 3:48Speaker 1: I didn't put those dots together until Rappaport tweeted it.
- 3:53Speaker 3: No that's not Again I'm not saying Ian didn't hear
- 3:57Speaker 3: it from somebody, but that's not something that was conveyed
- 4:01Speaker 3: to me that that was that was going to be
- 4:04Speaker 3: part of. And again, perhaps is a big word.
- 4:08Speaker 5: You know.
- 4:09Speaker 3: I could I could perhaps play small forward in the NBA,
- 4:15Speaker 3: if afforded the right opportunity.
- 4:16Speaker 1: Perhaps to play cell in the London Philharmonic.
- 4:19Speaker 4: And yet here you are with us and I and.
- 4:22Speaker 3: I think sometimes that's where we're at with social media.
- 4:25Speaker 3: Maybe perhaps could be don't be surprised all these things
- 4:29Speaker 3: we we do.
- 4:31Speaker 4: Uh, but that's not something that was ever conveyed to me,
- 4:34Speaker 4: you know.
- 4:34Speaker 3: And I will I will say I think I have
- 4:37Speaker 3: personally seen Sean Payton asked about surrendering any part of
- 4:42Speaker 3: play calling three or four times and this time here, Yeah,
- 4:47Speaker 3: it is a quick answer.
- 4:50Speaker 2: And not usually friendly and just no, I mean, you.
- 4:54Speaker 3: Know, it's just not something he you know. Now, there
- 4:58Speaker 3: is a bigger context to this discussion. The analytics people
- 5:03Speaker 3: around the league believe, because they're analytics people, they're going
- 5:08Speaker 3: to believe these things. But they believe the the head
- 5:12Speaker 3: coach play callers on either side of the ball are
- 5:15Speaker 3: the ones that have the biggest difficulty with game gay management.
- 5:20Speaker 3: So it is a discussion going on around the league
- 5:22Speaker 3: about if it's a good idea or not.
- 5:26Speaker 1: And well, we'll find out on Sunday, leg because Rabel
- 5:28Speaker 1: has no duties but McDonald does, So which one's gonna
- 5:32Speaker 1: screw up in the super Bowl we'll find out.
- 5:34Speaker 2: And they're both defensive guys.
- 5:37Speaker 3: And I would say Rabel's been a head coach before,
- 5:41Speaker 3: so maybe this is something he's given some thought to. Yeah,
- 5:45Speaker 3: and he is heavy into the analytics. And you know, frankly,
- 5:49Speaker 3: they've been pretty public or not public, but they've told
- 5:52Speaker 3: people in the league they they purposely messed up the
- 5:55Speaker 3: Broncos substitution patterns, you know, in the game by every
- 6:00Speaker 3: time Sean did a late substitution on offense, they just
- 6:04Speaker 3: dragged their feet, limiting the time that Jared Didham would
- 6:08Speaker 3: have to look over.
- 6:09Speaker 1: That did he interception?
- 6:10Speaker 2: Man, that's the play.
- 6:11Speaker 1: Barmore and Milton Williams just waddling their big behinds out there,
- 6:15Speaker 1: and then stid he snaps the ball with two on
- 6:17Speaker 1: the shot on the play clock, shot clock. I'm already
- 6:20Speaker 1: in basketball mode, but two on the play clock. Did
- 6:23Speaker 1: he even bother to look and see that Christian Gonzales
- 6:26Speaker 1: at a fifteen yard cushion on Marvin Mims on that play.
- 6:29Speaker 2: Don't throw a gold out of that guy?
- 6:31Speaker 5: Could he see Christian Gonzalez? The snow is sky's pretty
- 6:34Speaker 5: heavy by that point. Yeah, Hey, lady Nate had an
- 6:37Speaker 5: interesting note. And again we're asking about other reporters reporting,
- 6:40Speaker 5: which we don't mean to do. But just your opinion
- 6:44Speaker 5: George Peyton opening in Minnesota. Could the two be a
- 6:46Speaker 5: fit or do you think he's happy here?
- 6:49Speaker 4: Well?
- 6:49Speaker 3: I think both things could be true. I mean, certainly
- 6:52Speaker 3: they love George Peyton in that building. Uh, you know,
- 6:57Speaker 3: he was an assistant GM a long time there.
- 7:00Speaker 4: They could have made him GM. You know.
- 7:03Speaker 3: I think near the end they had an opportunity to.
- 7:07Speaker 4: Sort of do that. Ah, you know, I don't know.
- 7:10Speaker 3: I mean that's something you know, I haven't been in
- 7:12Speaker 3: front of George, you know, since all of this went down.
- 7:15Speaker 3: But you know, I think again we're talking about resources.
- 7:21Speaker 3: You know how it's going to be here. Yeah, Uh,
- 7:24Speaker 3: it's gonna be a powerful tug for all these guys.
- 7:26Speaker 4: And you know that's a lateral move.
- 7:28Speaker 3: And when you're talking lateral move, you know what are
- 7:33Speaker 3: the resources, What are your chances to win, how are
- 7:37Speaker 3: your chances to get free agents? You know all of
- 7:40Speaker 3: those things, and you know, I think again situations, this
- 7:46Speaker 3: is a better football situation. But you know, what's the
- 7:50Speaker 3: tug of history?
- 7:51Speaker 5: You know?
- 7:51Speaker 3: I don't think we know yet. I'm certainly in house
- 7:55Speaker 3: with the Vikings. They'll certainly look at it. He was
- 7:57Speaker 3: there a long time and looks I know, the Russell
- 8:01Speaker 3: Wilson thing and the Andy Gregory and all of that
- 8:03Speaker 3: has sort of tempered what people might think of him here.
- 8:06Speaker 3: But in the league there are a few guys who
- 8:10Speaker 3: are respected for what they know about football and their
- 8:15Speaker 3: lack of ego doing it than George Peyton.
- 8:18Speaker 2: All right.
- 8:19Speaker 5: I find it interesting because we knew it'd be an
- 8:21Speaker 5: interesting media week for Roger Goodell, and I see he's
- 8:24Speaker 5: already talking today, which beats I think.
- 8:27Speaker 2: Some of the media out there is that by design.
- 8:31Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 8:31Speaker 5: It just feels like there's a lot of things to
- 8:33Speaker 5: talk about, chief among it the report with Tish being
- 8:36Speaker 5: involved with Epstein.
- 8:38Speaker 2: Is this going to be a bit of an uncomfortable media.
- 8:40Speaker 5: Week for the NFL with the sale of the Seahawks
- 8:43Speaker 5: and the Tish thing popping up now and eighteen game
- 8:47Speaker 5: seasons and all that.
- 8:49Speaker 3: Well, it's kind of super Bowl Week in a nutshell.
- 8:51Speaker 3: I mean, the sale of the Seahawks has been known
- 8:54Speaker 3: for years and most people think it's been a given
- 8:59Speaker 3: after the twenty sixth season, just by the dynamics of
- 9:04Speaker 3: the of the trust and all of those things, so
- 9:08Speaker 3: that that isn't a new story per se. You know,
- 9:13Speaker 3: it's been out there for a while, and you know,
- 9:17Speaker 3: so that's just kind of super Bowl Week. But they're
- 9:19Speaker 3: in the super Bowl, so everything you do as a
- 9:22Speaker 3: team is amplified. You know, the I think the the
- 9:26Speaker 3: Epstein case and the files that's in a category all
- 9:29Speaker 3: of its own across you know, all landscapes.
- 9:35Speaker 4: For what's there.
- 9:38Speaker 3: But you know, even just a thing like the hiring
- 9:41Speaker 3: cycle is going to be uncomfortable for Roger Goodell. There
- 9:44Speaker 3: were ten openings, and if I was an aspiring black
- 9:49Speaker 3: coach in the NFL, I'd be pretty peeved right now
- 9:51Speaker 3: that among ten openings there wasn't a better and even
- 9:56Speaker 3: at the coordinator level. I mean, just look, you know,
- 9:59Speaker 3: if the argument's always going to be, well you got
- 10:03Speaker 3: to have this experience or that that experience you know,
- 10:06Speaker 3: even at the coordinator level, it's it's it's lacking. So
- 10:12Speaker 3: until the team owners start participating in all of this,
- 10:16Speaker 3: we're gonna have the same discussion every year. So yeah,
- 10:18Speaker 3: I think there are a lot of big topics on
- 10:21Speaker 3: the Super Bowl table, but there always are. If that's
- 10:24Speaker 3: just the nature of the beast, You're you're gonna put
- 10:26Speaker 3: everybody in one spot for one game. It's all gonna
- 10:31Speaker 3: get talked about.
- 10:32Speaker 1: Yeah, Robert Salo is the only minority higher amongst head
- 10:35Speaker 1: coaches amongst the ten openings, Jeff, So that literally means
- 10:40Speaker 1: Vance Joseph did not get a head coaching job. A
- 10:44Speaker 1: month ago. We were like, there couldn't possibly be a
- 10:46Speaker 1: better candidate in the league. And yet we go through
- 10:48Speaker 1: the cycle and VJ is still here. At the same time,
- 10:52Speaker 1: Jim Leonard, his DB's coach, is now the defensive coordinator
- 10:55Speaker 1: of the Buffalo Bills. Let's just, Jeff, let's let's dive
- 11:01Speaker 1: into both of those subjects right here. VJ still here,
- 11:05Speaker 1: Jim Leonard gone. In the effects that we'll have on
- 11:08Speaker 1: Denver's defense going forward.
- 11:10Speaker 3: Well, I mean they fired a coach in the secondary
- 11:14Speaker 3: and Leonard's left, so that that means, uh, you know,
- 11:19Speaker 3: they've got some work to do there and an important
- 11:22Speaker 3: there's very few you know, Russian coverage is NFL defense
- 11:26Speaker 3: in this day and age, so a secondary coach is
- 11:30Speaker 3: those are going to be big hires. And you know,
- 11:33Speaker 3: I would guess Vance would want a pretty significant voice
- 11:37Speaker 3: in that with Sean. But yeah, it's I'm you know,
- 11:41Speaker 3: I'm stunned by a lot of things in recent weeks,
- 11:44Speaker 3: but I am I am rather stunned in ten teams
- 11:50Speaker 3: couldn't come to the conclusion that he was one of
- 11:52Speaker 3: the best candidates. It's an awful you know, look, and
- 11:55Speaker 3: I'm a I think people should get opportunities, you know,
- 12:01Speaker 3: you know, you shouldn't have to be a head coach
- 12:03Speaker 3: before to be a head coach now and all that.
- 12:05Speaker 3: I don't believe that, But it is hard for me
- 12:07Speaker 3: to believe that ten teams went through the hiring cycles
- 12:11Speaker 3: and came up with with better candidates. But every defensive
- 12:16Speaker 3: coach I've known over the years, it's almost a double
- 12:18Speaker 3: whammy what VJ is looking at right now.
- 12:21Speaker 4: And that's that's a tough go.
- 12:23Speaker 2: Uh.
- 12:24Speaker 3: Even the fact that there are two defensive head coaches
- 12:26Speaker 3: in the Super Bowl doesn't seem to sway fan bases
- 12:29Speaker 3: or social media whatever owners listened to, you know, search committees,
- 12:35Speaker 3: all of these, yeah, or just.
- 12:38Speaker 4: It all seems to the Jets, Yeah yeah, just whatever
- 12:44Speaker 4: they're listening to.
- 12:46Speaker 3: It seems like defensive coaches for whatever, we don't we
- 12:49Speaker 3: don't brand that as quality defensive play is is pretty
- 12:54Speaker 3: much synonymous with boring football for a lot of people,
- 12:58Speaker 3: and that I think that echoes when they're hiring head
- 13:01Speaker 3: coaches instead of just you know, are you winning or not?
- 13:05Speaker 5: All right, let's take something from your site to ask
- 13:08Speaker 5: you about. And it got me kind of fired up
- 13:11Speaker 5: a week ago, and it wasn't the name I wanted
- 13:13Speaker 5: to see today.
- 13:13Speaker 2: But there's a mock draft out.
- 13:15Speaker 5: Who doesn't love a good mock draft, especially when you're
- 13:17Speaker 5: picking thirtieth.
- 13:19Speaker 2: What do you know about Anthony Hill junior.
- 13:21Speaker 5: The linebacker out of Texas that your fine company has
- 13:24Speaker 5: the Broncos picking it.
- 13:26Speaker 3: I tried to warn you that the yeah, yeah, the
- 13:34Speaker 3: senior ball is an indication this is a defensive board
- 13:37Speaker 3: all over the place.
- 13:39Speaker 4: Uh, and you might just have to deal with that.
- 13:42Speaker 2: My friend Bord spelled b o r E.
- 13:45Speaker 4: Wow, you're one of those def football. We live, we
- 13:54Speaker 4: live with it.
- 13:54Speaker 3: But uh no, that's uh that's one of the best
- 13:58Speaker 3: off ball linebackers available. He's a quality mover, as the
- 14:04Speaker 3: scouts would say.
- 14:05Speaker 1: But they need an upgrade there, Andy, they do need
- 14:08Speaker 1: an upgrade. Singleton good be gone, sternad could be gone
- 14:13Speaker 1: by the way.
- 14:15Speaker 4: Green Law play half the games this year, you know, And.
- 14:18Speaker 1: That's something you got to be concerned with a little bit.
- 14:20Speaker 1: I think there's upwards of a six million dollar cap
- 14:23Speaker 1: savings if Drake Greenlaw is dispatched. Jeff Is, do you
- 14:30Speaker 1: think that's a possibility The Broncos could simply say you're
- 14:32Speaker 1: too much of an injury case and move on.
- 14:35Speaker 3: Well, I would just say this, he jettisoned one of
- 14:40Speaker 3: his most trusted lieutenants of fifteen years, you know, a
- 14:44Speaker 3: two days after the season, I would say anything's on
- 14:47Speaker 3: the table.
- 14:48Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 14:50Speaker 3: I think this miss will sting him as a head
- 14:54Speaker 3: coach because he look, he made no secret of it,
- 14:57Speaker 3: and all I had to do is look at they
- 15:00Speaker 3: finished with the best record in the NFL and had
- 15:04Speaker 3: home field advantage. The defense gave up one touchdown bare
- 15:09Speaker 3: championship game. Yeah, a twelve yard touchdown drive.
- 15:13Speaker 2: Yep.
- 15:14Speaker 4: Cost you a trip to the Super Bowl, cause.
- 15:18Speaker 3: That will be the toughest pill to swallow for a
- 15:21Speaker 3: coach who made his living on offense. And this look
- 15:24Speaker 3: at the I mean they're twenty ninth and three and outs.
- 15:29Speaker 3: You know JK Dobbins leads the team in explosive runs,
- 15:32Speaker 3: he didn't play since November sixth, and Courtland Sutton's the
- 15:36Speaker 3: only wide receiver the team has in the top forty
- 15:39Speaker 3: eight in the league in explosive receptions. So it's pretty
- 15:44Speaker 3: easy to see where the red flags are and that
- 15:47Speaker 3: is not going to sit well with the head coach.
- 15:49Speaker 1: Jeff Legweld everybody ESPN dot com his draft coverage is
- 15:54Speaker 1: happening right now, Leggy.
- 15:57Speaker 2: Excellent work is always real quick. Sorry Nate, Yes, Malachi Fields?
- 16:04Speaker 2: Would he be a better selection than Anthony Hill Junior?
- 16:07Speaker 2: Since you just talked about all that, No.
- 16:11Speaker 3: He O for a head coach who loves big receivers. Uh,
- 16:15Speaker 3: he was pretty easy to spot in uh in mobile.
- 16:20Speaker 2: Answer my question.
- 16:21Speaker 5: If it's Jeff Legwall drafting, are you taking Anthony Hill
- 16:24Speaker 5: Junior or Malachi Fields the wide out out of Notre Dame.
- 16:27Speaker 3: Yeah, I take the highest rated player available and I
- 16:30Speaker 3: don't know who that will be, is gonna say, but
- 16:35Speaker 3: Fields was he had a great week. Yeah, so his
- 16:39Speaker 3: his stock may be better than thirty by draft six.
- 16:42Speaker 2: Foeen, what's the old eye test?
- 16:44Speaker 5: Tell you were just down there, Jeff Legwell eye Testbruary nicely?
- 16:50Speaker 4: You know me.
- 16:50Speaker 3: I when I look at receivers coming into the NFL,
- 16:54Speaker 3: I know lots of folks look at at straight line
- 16:58Speaker 3: speed and all the big plays they in college when
- 17:00Speaker 3: nobody played man defense and all that stuff.
- 17:03Speaker 1: Uh.
- 17:03Speaker 3: I work from the contested catches out out and uh,
- 17:09Speaker 3: that guy he wins the contested ball, and that's an
- 17:12Speaker 3: NFL receiver.
- 17:13Speaker 2: All right, can't wait for the top one hundred. When
- 17:16Speaker 2: is that next week? Two weeks? Get to work.
- 17:19Speaker 4: Let's do you know what the top.
- 17:22Speaker 2: One hundred pre combine? How about that A one? Yeah?
- 17:28Speaker 2: Yeah yeah.
- 17:29Speaker 1: Release it to us early and then we'll just have
- 17:31Speaker 1: it draft exactly. We'll we'll have it and then it's
- 17:36Speaker 1: you know, and it's it's like a presidential State of
- 17:39Speaker 1: the Union. And give it to the to the reporters
- 17:41Speaker 1: an hour before the speech. Just that's all we ask
- 17:43Speaker 1: leg he is, just give it to us like a
- 17:45Speaker 1: month and a half early and and then we can work.
- 17:48Speaker 2: We can see what changed your mind during the process.
- 17:51Speaker 4: You go, let's see how much you like what I did?
- 17:54Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly, Yeah, and then use it to moculate.
- 17:59Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 17:59Speaker 3: So when like the top eighteen players are defensive, guys,
- 18:02Speaker 3: you guys gonna be so hot under the car.
- 18:04Speaker 2: I guess I kind of lost, you know what.
- 18:06Speaker 5: I like defense, but this team needs team needs figure
- 18:10Speaker 5: out some offensive pointed out.
- 18:12Speaker 1: And all right, Jeff, good work, there, he goes. That's
- 18:16Speaker 1: Jeff Legwold ESPN dot com. Get Leggy's latest on the
- 18:20Speaker 1: hiring or I suppose promotion of Davis Webbs, the Broncos
- 18:24Speaker 1: offensive coordinator,
