- 0:39I am one of your co hosts, Nick Agnetti along with my other co host Jason Rowland.
- 0:43Welcome back.
- 0:43Glad to be here.
- 0:44Absolutely.
- 0:45We have a very special guest today.
- 0:47We have Jen Baglio, senior Transportation Business Operations Analyst with Thomson Reuters.
- 0:52Thanks for joining Jen.
- 0:53Good morning, Jason.
- 0:53Good morning, Nick.
- 0:54Thanks for having me today.
- 0:55You're welcome.
- 0:55Thank you for being here.
- 0:57So, so the topic today is new domestic delivery options in the US market today.
- 1:02Right, Right.
- 1:03Could you just take a second for viewers and listeners and do a quick introduction of yourself and kind of what you focus on Thompson maybe what's background on Thompson and what you guys are focused on now?
- 1:13Absolutely.
- 1:14So in my role as a transportation analyst for Thomson really involves quite a bit of things, but new carrier selection is one of those.
- 1:22Our customer base is specific or mainly in the US but we do have some international volume as well.
- 1:29So in my role I'm analyzing those carriers, looking at how we use them, implementing them in a rate shop scenario if applicable.
- 1:39And then anything on the back end like reporting analytics, monitoring our KPIs, things like that, it's all included in my role.
- 1:47All the fun stuff.
- 1:48All the fun stuff.
- 1:49All the fun things.
- 1:50Anything shipping or transportation related.
- 1:52So when I think of Thompson historically.
- 1:55I think of legal and that's.
- 1:58That's a good point.
- 1:59So that is our core business that started our organization over a hundred years ago and that was providing printed products to the legal industry.
- 2:08Okay.
- 2:09So our business has changed over the years.
- 2:12We still support Thomson Reuters and all the professional print products.
- 2:16I specifically work for a division called Core Print Solutions.
- 2:20Okay.
- 2:21So we are a large scale for service book, manufacturing, warehouse and fulfillment company in Eagan, Minnesota.
- 2:30So as I said, we've been in existence for over 100 years.
- 2:34In addition to the legal and tax and professional products that we offer, we have also turned into a commercial Print and fulfillment powerhouse in the area.
- 2:44Yeah.
- 2:44And I always know Opperman Drive is the street from the many visits and things like that.
- 2:50Yes.
- 2:51Okay, Jason, go ahead.
- 2:53Yeah.
- 2:53So as you start doing that analysis for bringing on new carriers and that kind of thing, what are some things that kind of pique your interest when it comes to starting a new or, you know, evaluating a new
- 3:02carrier?
- 3:03Yeah, that's a great question.
- 3:04I would say first, what need are you trying to fulfill?
- 3:07You know the Parcel Forum where we're at, Great show.
- 3:12Been to a lot of sessions in the past few days, learning a lot.
- 3:16Depending on the session you go, they're going to talk about carrier consolidation or carrier diversification, and both are happening.
- 3:24So when I'm looking at a new carrier, what problem am I trying to solve for what, what concerns do I have?
- 3:32Is it an individual lane that I'm having pricing concerns or service concerns?
- 3:38How will implementing a new carrier affect my customer?
- 3:43So, yeah, we're, we're.
- 3:44I think the biggest question is use your data.
- 3:46Trying to figure out what, what need are you trying to solve when looking at a new carrier?
- 3:52And that's a really diverse kind of thing.
- 3:54Right.
- 3:54So, you know, anyone walking up to a booth like that is going to have different concerns, they're going to have different needs, they're going to have a different network they're trying to support.
- 4:01So I think that kind of analysis is really helpful to someone that doesn't know what they don't know.
- 4:05Right.
- 4:05And they're just kind of walking in saying, I have a problem.
- 4:08How can we, how can we make it better?
- 4:09Yes, exactly.
- 4:10You know, and we're here at Parcel Forum.
- 4:13Right.
- 4:13And there's plenty of carriers here and you know, that are, that are showing all their stuff.
- 4:18You know, they've got some exhibits are stuff hanging from the ceiling, others are just, you know, on the ground.
- 4:24But it seems like there have been, there has been a significant expansion of the number of carriers on the final mile side, especially on the regional side.
- 4:32We're seeing a lot more of those smaller carriers.
- 4:34Yes.
- 4:34And I, I think a lot of shippers that are here at the show, most have a national agreement with one of the big guys.
- 4:42So.
- 4:43And I just heard in one of the last sessions, last year or years prior, we would call them niche carriers or regional carriers.
- 4:50Now they're all carriers.
- 4:52Right.
- 4:52And what need do they fill for your organization?
- 4:56Okay.
- 4:57And that's what we're looking at.
- 4:59But in that analysis too, how does it affect my agreement with the national carriers?
- 5:04Will carving out a need affect my tier that I'm at with a national carrier?
- 5:10Will it affect any rebate incentives?
- 5:12All that has to be factored into looking at a new carrier.
- 5:15Yeah.
- 5:16You don't want to have a situation where dialing in your 10% affects your 90%.
- 5:19Right, exactly.
- 5:20Right.
- 5:21You.
- 5:22Right.
- 5:22My goodness.
- 5:24Mr.
- 5:24Jason Roland here.
- 5:25Okay, so, so Jen, what that.
- 5:28I mean, this is all amazing, right.
- 5:30You're sitting on the other side of table.
- 5:31Of the table from, from me.
- 5:32Right.
- 5:32In terms of just, you know, roles.
- 5:34But what is a quick way for you, whether it's personal, professional, whatever that looks like to disqualify a new carrier during your evaluation process?
- 5:42Yeah, also a good question.
- 5:44So I would say at this point, like confusing price structures.
- 5:51If you look at base rates and comparing it with like, like I said, with a national carrier, you may find instant savings on base rates.
- 5:59But what else is there?
- 6:00Are there surcharges that is going to take that cost per package and make it maybe higher than your incumbent hidden pricing things you don't initially see.
- 6:11So a red flag right out of the base would be lack of transparency in a pricing structure.
- 6:18That would be.
- 6:20Yeah.
- 6:20One, one concern on that.
- 6:22And how would, how would.
- 6:23For anybody listening or watching, how would somebody know if there's, you know, the transparency isn't there?
- 6:31I mean, you have so much experience.
- 6:32But how would, let's say maybe a less experienced person, they get a contract from carrier A and they're like, wow, this looks amazing.
- 6:39But you would know instinctually.
- 6:41Well, there's more to this and you're not peeling back the onion.
- 6:45Right?
- 6:45Exactly.
- 6:46It really is more than base rate.
- 6:48So if you're looking at base rates, you may, like I said, see those initial savings.
- 6:51When you look at a niche or regional carrier, you do have to factor in how much is it costing me to get to their location if they don't have a processing facility near me.
- 7:02So first mile could maybe isn't included.
- 7:04Yeah, could be.
- 7:06I mean, carriers are proposing that you provide that, that first mile or it's baked in their cost somewhere.
- 7:12Right.
- 7:13So is that piece makes sense.
- 7:17And especially with all the like geopolitical stuff we have going on right now with the price of oil and gas like those, a lot of them will have variable fuel surcharges and things like that that they'll hide in
- 7:27or say, oh, at any point we can just say, oh, there's a 10% fee for, you know, a gas increase or anything like that.
- 7:33So.
- 7:33Right.
- 7:34You know, keeping an Eye on that to keep your cost down is I would imagine, sure.
- 7:37Fuel is always one of the highest, is the highest surcharge markup.
- 7:42So going into a new discussion with a carrier, what does their fuel look like?
- 7:47Are they strictly passing it on?
- 7:48Is there any type of price protection?
- 7:50Is there anything that's in the long term going to give me predictable fuel costs?
- 7:55Can you negotiate it?
- 7:56Can you negotiate it for sure?
- 7:58Absolutely.
- 7:59I'm going to jump ahead and Jason, maybe I'll have you take the fourth question that we kind of had, but this isn't on.
- 8:06I'm not trying to throw you curveball, it's not going to be crazy.
- 8:09But I just from our conversation, I'm curious, how do you look at peak season or do you have a peak season?
- 8:15Is it something that you prep for or what do you do in preparation for it?
- 8:19Yeah.
- 8:20So sometimes you can use that to your advantage.
- 8:23So in a, the professional industry, we don't have the traditional E commerce peak around the last part of the year, but we do have peaks around school seasons and big product pushes and things like that.
- 8:41But sometimes you can use an off cycle peak to your advantage.
- 8:46The carriers are overwhelmed at the end of the year.
- 8:48If you can go into a negotiation with a new carrier and say, hey, we're pretty light in November and December, we've got volume in June, they love that.
- 8:57So go into that.
- 9:00Yes.
- 9:01Go into those discussions.
- 9:03That's good that you have the opportunity to lean into that.
- 9:05You know, most of the people that might be walking the floor here probably have a, you know, late October through their January push.
- 9:14Exactly what I mean.
- 9:15And just like pricing and transparency on both sides is key.
- 9:19If, if I do have a peak season, a traditional one, I would want a partner, you know, to know that and understand.
- 9:26Okay.
- 9:27What they can do and vice versa.
- 9:29Yeah.
- 9:29So as, as different companies, you know, have their own peaks and valleys throughout the course of the year that's can be separate based on what your company is and what your volume is like.
- 9:39But one of the things that is more universal among all carriers and companies would be like the new regulatory changes that are coming out.
- 9:46Right.
- 9:46So when we have like the Canadian tariffs and, and, and the ongoing kind of geopolitical issues between the US and Canada specifically.
- 9:55So that's more universal I think.
- 9:57So what are some things that you've seen that, that those new Canadian tariffs like changed in the market or how do you prioritize that in terms of your analysis of carriers?
- 10:09Yeah, definitely needs to be prioritized for Our business, we have a commitment to our professional customers that we get a product to them.
- 10:21So we don't have a choice to hold it, not send it.
- 10:25But that awareness of what's happening is critical and understanding what those price increases, tariff increases look like.
- 10:35So even if we don't pass on that cost immediately, something we may do in the future, and working with a partner like Accendia to understand those is really key.
- 10:46I don't think any of us here can be an expert on any piece of shipping altogether.
- 10:51And as I said at the start, you know, my area is mainly domestic, but when it comes to international Canada, that's when we really have to have a great relationship with our partners like Essendia to keep us in
- 11:03the loop of what's going on.
- 11:04What we need to be aware of.
- 11:07Yeah, that's really a common thread that.
- 11:08We teed that one up in a lot of.
- 11:11A lot of our episodes is that we.
- 11:14The power of partnerships is really important.
- 11:16And I think it's one of those things.
- 11:18The more we do these, the more we kind of appreciate all the different partnerships that we have.
- 11:22Because it help.
- 11:23Like you said, you can't be great at everything.
- 11:26Right?
- 11:26Right.
- 11:26So.
- 11:27But having those partnerships in place are what I think really help not only the carriers, but also, you know, the customers, in the end, they get a better result.
- 11:35Absolutely.
- 11:35Jason.
- 11:36Yeah, I agree.
- 11:37So, okay, so I.
- 11:39I love this conversation.
- 11:40It's been a great conversation.
- 11:41We're going to kind of recap things, but if you could leave for, you know, just a couple of nuggets for listeners, viewers, and when it comes to, you know, our focus being new domestic delivery options in the market.
- 11:52You've already laid out some.
- 11:53So many good points.
- 11:54But what are just two more things maybe that you'd leave with people just to focus on when they're going through their evaluation and things like that.
- 12:02Sure.
- 12:04I said it earlier, but know your data.
- 12:06Know your data.
- 12:07Know your data.
- 12:08Yeah.
- 12:09What problems are you trying to solve?
- 12:11I think, and we've heard it at the show, there were carrier changes implemented during COVID as.
- 12:18As a fear factor.
- 12:20Right.
- 12:20Like, my carrier may not be keeping up.
- 12:23I got to get someone else on board.
- 12:24That was like a knee jerk reaction.
- 12:26Hopefully we're past that now.
- 12:28So now we have to really look at our data and what are we trying to solve?
- 12:31Know what you need instead of just adding a carrier to diversify.
- 12:36Why do you want to diversify?
- 12:37Know your data and what are you trying to solve?
- 12:40I love it.
- 12:41Love it.
- 12:41Okay, well, Jen, thanks so much for joining us.
- 12:44And you know, we, we appreciate the conversation.
- 12:47And Jason, anything you want to add?
- 12:49No, it's great having you.
