- 0:13welcome, welcome, welcome. Welcome to Starbase.
- 0:22So it's been almost two years since I last update and a lot
- 0:27has happened since then, but I'm getting like a stranger audio
- 0:31feedback? I don't know.
- 0:32If do, I sound okay to you guys? Okay, great.
- 0:37So it's been two years since we had our first mark one rocket
- 0:44and a lot has happened since then we had to go through the
- 0:48progress but I'm just incredibly proud of the The SpaceX team and
- 0:54all the support that we received from Cameron County for
- 0:58Brownsville from South Padre. And if I know some of you in the
- 1:02audience, it's a thank you very much for your support. so, So
- 1:14before we jump into the details of what what's happened over the
- 1:18past 22 years? I think it's worth just talking
- 1:21a bit about this like, like, why, why are we doing this, you
- 1:27know, this I mean, pretty epic. But, but what's the, what's the
- 1:33sort of the sort of deep meaning behind this, like, why beloved
- 1:38Giant reusable rocket. Why make life multiplanetary?
- 1:45And I think this is just an incredibly important thing for
- 1:50the future of life itself. So, and this, this this there's
- 1:56both a quote that the sort of the, the, the defense of reason
- 2:03or the life insurance reason, that's one part of it, which is
- 2:07that there's always some chance that something could go wrong on
- 2:11Earth. You dinosaurs are not around
- 2:14anymore. So you know we could that could
- 2:19be some Calamity that we we do ourselves in or there's just
- 2:25there's a natural disaster now. I'm naturally an optimist.
- 2:29So I think the probability of that is low but it is not zero
- 2:34and and eventually the sun will expand, it might take a few
- 2:40hundred million years so don't hold your breath but eventually
- 2:44the sun will expand and destroy all life.
- 2:46So for those who really care about, not just the humans, but
- 2:49all the life on Earth, it is very important essential that
- 2:53over the long term that we become a multi-planet species.
- 2:56And ultimately, even go beyond the solar system.
- 2:59Item and bring life with us. And, you know, we are Life
- 3:05Stewart's life's Guardians that, you know, the the creatures that
- 3:09we love cannot they can't build spaceships but we can and we can
- 3:13bring them with us and I think that's pretty important, you
- 3:17know, for those that care about the environment and care about
- 3:20all the creatures on Earth that's like that, that I would
- 3:24say like the defensive or the life insurance reason for life
- 3:27collectively but there's also an inspiring reason which is that
- 3:33life. It can't just be about solving
- 3:35problems. They have to be things that
- 3:37inspire you that, that move your heart.
- 3:40That make, you glad to be there. When you wake up in the morning,
- 3:44you're excited about the future and going out there and pick up
- 3:49being a multi-planet species, and being a spacefaring
- 3:52civilization, and making science fiction, and not fiction
- 3:55forever. I think that's one of those
- 3:58things, you know, I think we, that's just it, that's what
- 4:01fires me up. The most is, like, let's go out
- 4:04there and find out what this universe is all about.
- 4:09You know, are there other species out there, maybe?
- 4:17You know, hopefully that it's, I mean, we ever want to go find
- 4:20out what the heck's going on, what is going on?
- 4:23I mean, way, you know, how do we get here?
- 4:26What's the meaning of life 42? But what if it, what's the
- 4:29question? And, you know, if we go out
- 4:35there and we explore the Galaxy, ultimately then we can find out
- 4:40some of these questions and it would just be a very exciting to
- 4:43do that and so we can all look forward to And even, you know,
- 4:48whether somebody chooses to go or not, I think you know
- 4:52vicariously. We can all go there just like
- 4:54with Apollo where, you know, only a handful of people went to
- 4:58the moon. But in a sense we all went their
- 5:01humanity went there. And so even if somebody doesn't
- 5:06choose to go themselves, I think vicariously through others, they
- 5:10will go, they will understand, they will experience the
- 5:13universe and I think that's incredibly Mental to an exciting
- 5:19future. And that's, that's why we're
- 5:22doing this. So,
- 5:34and Yeah. Now one of the rebuttals will
- 5:41sometimes hear is like you sure. But what about all the problems
- 5:44on Earth and I completely agree that the vast majority of
- 5:48resources should be dedicated to solving problems on Earth.
- 5:51Absolutely, I'd say like more than 99% of our resources should
- 5:56be oriented towards solving problems on Earth.
- 6:00It's a but it's important to note that like NASA's annual
- 6:04budget. It is only Point three percent
- 6:07Point, 36 percent of the federal budget.
- 6:10And in fact I love the national GDP, it's less than a tenth of a
- 6:14percentage point. So it's like we're you know
- 6:17we're only spending point one percent of our resources on
- 6:21space. I think I think we get that's
- 6:23okay. You know, like we will be
- 6:24flying, you know. So just you know, just make sure
- 6:29people don't think like, well we is he suggesting that we just
- 6:31spend everything on space. No, I'm suggesting.
- 6:34We would like maybe half a percent.
- 6:36Or something like that, we would probably be.
- 6:38Okay. So and I think, you know, given
- 6:44the, this establishing security for life itself and having
- 6:47exciting future and inspiring that, you know, kids about the
- 6:51future. I think it's it's worth it
- 6:54basically. Yeah.
- 7:03So well, how do we do this? How do we make life
- 7:08multiplanetary? How do what's the first step and
- 7:12the essential technology? The Holy Grail breakthrough
- 7:15that's needed, is a rapid and completely reusable rocket
- 7:20system. So this is never been
- 7:22accomplished before and there's a lot of people for longest time
- 7:27thought, this is not possible. Now, with Falcon 9, we've been
- 7:31able to show that You can have, you can have reuse of Abu stage
- 7:36and reuse of the ferry. So with Falcon 9, we've
- 7:39demonstrated a lot of reuse of the Brew stage and of the
- 7:43fairing. We've have over 100 Reef Lights
- 7:49of the fairing over its of the booster.
- 7:53And I'm not sure of the ferry number but it's a lot.
- 7:57And and that's a, that's a big step in the right direction.
- 8:01With Starship, we're aiming for Full and Rapid reusability.
- 8:05So You know, we're up to, I need to accomplish that, that's not
- 8:13done yet, but but the success is one of the possible outcomes,
- 8:21which I always think, is when embarking on an Endeavor,
- 8:24success, should be, at least one of the possible outcomes.
- 8:27And this for this design, that is the case.
- 8:32So, the and we're aiming for Rapid or usability, which is why
- 8:39the Brewster's is going to take off and then fly back to the
- 8:43launch Tower and aspirationally gets land on the arms.
- 8:52Which is the sound insane or as well, Riley would say audacious
- 9:01and, but I, you know, if, if it does come in too fast and, and
- 9:10Shear off the arms, then I guess it will be a Farewell to Arms.
- 9:16Sorry, there's the dad jokes. You know, is it?
- 9:21I said, To warn you, they're only going to get worse.
- 9:24So yeah. So here I'd really just like to
- 9:31congratulate the SpaceX team and and also thank NASA.
- 9:37The fa, the space force and everyone and all of our
- 9:41customers that have helped us get to this point.
- 9:45It's insanely hard to get a rocket to orbit.
- 9:50It's the only difficult to have huge respect.
- 9:52Anyone who's gotten a rocket to orbit since it's so hard and
- 9:56we've had 144 successful launches 106 Landings?
- 10:02Yeah, I mean, I've had these days.
- 10:03I have to look on the internet. Say, how many things are?
- 10:05We had a but I have to ask the internet.
- 10:10So 83 flight flight, proven launches and Although I have to
- 10:23say, I still have like, like launch PTSD every time the
- 10:27rocket takes off of my God, you know.
- 10:34I'd actually I just see all the ways that it could fail like
- 10:40better, you know. And then this this year we're
- 10:42actually aiming to have around 50 launches so it's about a
- 10:47launch per week on average. And yeah so it's healthier we
- 10:52got ahead of us and in terms of The master orbit, if you look at
- 11:01like tonnage to orbit, this, this bar chart that will show
- 11:07here really illustrates how profound a rapidly reusable
- 11:13rocket. Especially a big one is what
- 11:19effect that has on total tonnage to orbit.
- 11:23So the total of Master orbit to date of Earth is around 15,000
- 11:27tons. Maybe fifteen, sixteen thousand.
- 11:29Tons and the mass per Starship after a year, just one year of
- 11:39launching. If it launches three times a day
- 11:43would be equal to all the mass of to orbit of Earth to date.
- 11:49That's that's just one Starship. Launching three times a day for
- 11:55a year. Now, if you have You know, 10
- 12:03Starships ish then and we'll have more than that.
- 12:08Our goal is to be making at least a one stack per month and
- 12:14then ultimately, potentially a ship, every three days, they'll
- 12:19be more ships than there are boosters because the booster
- 12:22actually even those gigantic will come back in about six
- 12:26minutes excitement, guaranteed. So, it only takes about two
- 12:34minutes on a scent, and then about four minutes to return
- 12:38you'll know. Soon, the, there's the ship has
- 12:42to complete at least one orbit around Earth and sometimes maybe
- 12:47three orbits or more, and each orbit is 90 minutes.
- 12:51So the ship is probably, you know, a reusable about every 6th
- 12:58six to eight hours. That's, that's why we say, sort
- 13:01of three times a day for the ship.
- 13:02The theory, the booster is capable of being reused every
- 13:06hour, so that the propellant pumps are designed to fill the
- 13:11rocket in about half an hour. So the this really is designed
- 13:17for Rapid reusability. So it with, if you can do
- 13:24roughly a million tons of Earth orbit, that's comfortably over
- 13:30100,000, tons to the service of Mars, maybe 150,000 tons
- 13:34depending on how good the landing system is so that you
- 13:38can only go to Mars every two years.
- 13:41So and I think maybe roughly you need about a million tons on
- 13:47Mars to have eight self-sustaining City, but the
- 13:53critical threshold, I think for Mars is to have a city that is
- 13:59self-sustaining, it's going to be Really difficult to make a
- 14:03self-sustaining City. Because if it's missing any
- 14:05ingredient, any agreement at all, however, minor that
- 14:10ingredient is. Then if the ships from Earth,
- 14:13stop coming for any reason, the city will die out.
- 14:18So the critical threshold to pass.
- 14:25One of the most important, great filters for any species is to
- 14:30have have the the other planet no longer dependence on on the
- 14:37original Planet. So, I don't know exactly what
- 14:40that tonnage is but I suspected as at least, if one tries to get
- 14:44the right order of magnitude about a million tons.
- 14:49Hopefully, it's not more than that.
- 14:53Starship is capable of doing that, it's capable of getting

- 17:28for a short time and this is the first this is the first point in
- 17:33the four and a half billion year history of Earth that it has
- 17:36been possible. I mean, let that sink in or if
- 17:40there's a sink, let it in so knocking at the door.
- 17:45I mean, it's a sentient sing. Let's face it letter.
- 17:48I mean, I mean, so, Four and a half billion years.
- 17:59Been a while. This is the first time it's been
- 18:03possible. We need to seize the opportunity
- 18:07and do it as quickly as possible.
- 18:11I'm going to be frank civilization is feeling a little
- 18:13fragile these days. And like I said, I'm an
- 18:18optimist, but we got to protect it outside here and and try to
- 18:22build out sooner and Mars as soon as possible and secure the
- 18:25future of life. And it's going to be an
- 18:28incredibly exciting Adventure. Now the the sales pitch for fork
- 18:36for going to Mars is that it's going to be cramped.
- 18:42Dangerous difficult, very hard work, you might die, and that's
- 18:51the sales pitch. I hope you like it so far from
- 18:56being in. Some sort of escape hatch, it
- 18:59will be extremely difficult and dangerous.
- 19:02Louis and Anne tough. Mars Mars is a fixer-upper of a
- 19:09planet and so it's going to take some work to make it make it
- 19:14easier to live there, but one day we could make Mars a planet
- 19:17like Earth. I think we should So just some
- 19:23facts about Starship and these, these numbers will evolve over
- 19:27time. So Heights of the ship is about
- 19:3250 meters, 164 feet, the 9, M 0 0, 30 foot diameter.
- 19:38Well, you can just see it. Basically, it's got about 1,200
- 19:42tons of propound on the ship and thrust is about 1,500 tons.
- 19:49Now, these numbers will It will probably add more per pound over
- 19:52time. Increase thrust diameter will
- 19:55stay the same, it's a huge, huge pain to change diameter, so that
- 20:00that will tend to stay the same, but it'll probably get a little
- 20:02bit longer. And we're expecting payload
- 20:05capacity of 100 to 150 tons depending on on which orbit.
- 20:11So, to to a starling Corbett, roughly 100 tons over time.
- 20:18I think we can probably get the Orbit for orbital refilling.
- 20:24The payload to orbit for orbital refilling to about 200 tons
- 20:28which is going to be very important for getting to Mars.
- 20:31So we're getting to Mars. You also need the orbital
- 20:34refilling just like you have aerial refueling.
- 20:38The Rockets will need orbital refilling, it's actually mostly
- 20:41oxygen. The there's three and a half
- 20:45tons of oxygen for every 1 ton of fuel so that's why it's
- 20:49refilling. Not refueling. so, Heat shield.
- 20:57So this is the world's largest heat shield and this is we
- 21:01actually make this at at a little factory in Florida near
- 21:05Cape Canaveral. I recalled the bakery and we're
- 21:09actually using a lot of techniques that are used for
- 21:11roofing tiles. So we need to have a heat shield
- 21:14that is capable of resisting extreme heat but also is not
- 21:18crazy expensive and I'll heat shield.
- 21:21Team is done done. Amazing work in creating the
- 21:24world's largest. Heat shield and one that is
- 21:28reusable but also robust and low-cost.
- 21:34So it's not a it's not a crazy money heat shield and yeah need
- 21:41need good heat shield technology for entering from orbit, orbit
- 21:44or refilling. We were going to do an animation
- 21:48of this but it looked a bit wrong. it is a fluid transfer,
- 21:56like, so, Yeah. Play a little Barry White, you
- 22:07know? Okay, so that's one of the
- 22:13technologies that is necessary for getting to Mars, so the ship
- 22:18would get to orbit with with payload.
- 22:23And and then, then in orbit, weird refill, the tanks.
- 22:28So, it have enough propellant to, to get to Mars, Mars is far.
- 22:34So now with this is essentially docking in orbit.
- 22:38And, and I with dragon docking with the space station, this is
- 22:43a technology that we've, that SpaceX has become quite good at
- 22:47we've done. I think this point a couple
- 22:50dozen dockings with the space station, and it's actually The
- 22:53way harder to dock with the space station, then to dock with
- 22:55yourself. So this is you know it is a
- 23:00thing. We need to solve for Starship
- 23:04and I'm confident that we can do this because we've done a lot of
- 23:07overall ducking already with dragon but this is going to be
- 23:12an important thing to to demonstrate what be necessary in
- 23:15the near term for stalling launches, but it will be
- 23:18necessary for for Mars and the Moon.
- 23:25So let's see, super super heavy booster, so it was 70 meters but
- 23:32then there was an extra half barrel section that the team
- 23:36deleted and totally accidentally it 69 M.
- 23:41It's also boost or foreign ship 20, I mean this is a pure
- 23:46coincidence. I those what numbers won't leave
- 23:48me alone, I just hope it's good luck.
- 23:56So yeah, so so propelling capacity is like around 3400,
- 24:02tons. I think this likes to these
- 24:05little, probably it will increase over time.
- 24:07Probably gets a 36. Maybe thirty eight hundred tons
- 24:11thrusters around 76 hundred tons that will probably increase to
- 24:15over time. Just to put this into
- 24:17perspective though. The Saturn 5 was seven and a
- 24:20half million pounds of thrust and Starship is 17.
- 24:25So it's more than twice the thrust of a Saturn 5 which was
- 24:28quite that was that's the largest rocket ever to get to
- 24:30orbit. As with any super heavy is the
- 24:35largest flying object of any kind or will be, it's yeah.
- 24:45But very big. You can see it right there.
- 24:49The the that booster has 29 engines, the next booster, we
- 24:57actually increase the entrant count 233, we're kind of bounce
- 25:00around on engine count, But because I think one point we had
- 25:06like thirty seven engines and they weren't 229, we're finally
- 25:12settled on 33 engines which it which is about actually the most
- 25:15number of engines. You can actually fit under that
- 25:17that booster without like expanding the diameter.
- 25:25Yeah, and then this this Tower this Tower from from design to
- 25:31construction was the 13 months. So it's quite an quite an epic
- 25:36structure. It's really worth emphasizing
- 25:40that the whole launch system, which is basically stage 0 is
- 25:46I'd say as complex and difficult as either the booster or the
- 25:51ship. So I really want to emphasize
- 25:54that this is And it's a very difficult thing that requires a
- 26:00lot of Hardcore engineering and its really, like I said, the
- 26:06Tower and the launch system which I call stage. 0 is just as
- 26:10important as stage 1 and Stage 2.
- 26:15I mean, this is really some some wild stuff here.
- 26:18In fact, I mean hard to believe it's real except, you know, it
- 26:25right there so Yeah. Then Raptor development rapper.
- 26:35One was 185 tons of thrust Raptor to is 230 tons of thrust
- 26:41and I think over time we can get that to probably 250 tons.
- 26:48So that's and it's also significantly simplified.
- 26:52So you can see the difference between V1 and V2.
- 26:56This the V2 is, there's you know, if you want to looks like
- 27:00kind of like a Christmas tree Spaghetti pile, a lot of fiddly
- 27:05bits and V2 is greatly simplified while also increasing
- 27:11thrust at the same time. So it's actually Raptor to cost
- 27:17about half as much as raptor1, despite having much more thrust.
- 27:21And I think just generally being a much easier engine to build
- 27:25and a more robust engine. So, very excited about Raptor
- 27:31version. To and it's only going to get
- 27:33better from here. So yeah, so referred to is
- 28:01pretty sick and we're actually the peak trust that we've
- 28:08operated Raptor to edit this point as 247 tons.
- 28:13And so I'm confident that with some improvements we can we can
- 28:17get to at 250 ton operating point and And I continue to
- 28:23simplify and sort of robust defy the engine.
- 28:27So it's really, it's a spectacular piece of engineering
- 28:31extremely difficult to make and succeed.
- 28:33This is engine has been mind-bogglingly difficult, but
- 28:37it is one of the essential keys to, I mean, this is, it is
- 28:42essential to, obviously, to making Starship work.
- 28:48It'll be the first full flow, staged combustion engine to get
- 28:53to orbit. Yeah, kind of need that need.
- 28:59That is p and thrust to weight. So so why Starbase lot of people
- 29:08I could like say like why it's obvious, why why here and We
- 29:15kind of needed a Confluence of factors.
- 29:19The getting to orbit, you want to launch Eastward so that you
- 29:23have help from Earth's rotation. So the closer you are to the
- 29:27Equator, the more of a sort of a boost from Earth rotation that
- 29:31you get. So you want to be as soft as
- 29:34possible and launched Eastward and then, you know, it's always
- 29:39possible that something goes wrong.
- 29:43And so you want to have A, a good clear area.
- 29:46You want several miles around the launch site to be
- 29:52unpopulated, or at least clearable, and that doesn't
- 29:56actually leave a lot of options. It's basically here and, and
- 30:02Cape Canaveral. Okay, Kennedy is where other two
- 30:05possibilities and then because we have had a lot of launches,
- 30:09going out of the cape. We didn't want to disrupt the
- 30:13cape. Tivity, the operational launches
- 30:16with sort of the advanced R&D of Starship.
- 30:21So it was important to decouple the operational launches from
- 30:26the, from the R&D launches, and that's why, that's why we're at
- 30:30this location. And once again, I just like to
- 30:34thank Cameron County, and Brownsville South Padre Padre,
- 30:39and the remaining residents of Boca Chica village where I live.
- 30:48By the way, it's my primary residence is that little village
- 30:51over there so, and it's been great, it's been great being
- 30:57here and yeah, like super appreciate the support of the
- 31:00community. Yeah, all right.

- 31:33covering Starship missions orbital flight is really just
- 31:37the beginning. So we're going to have a number
- 31:41of starlink missions that will launch stalling, satellite
- 31:45version 2. But even more exciting than that
- 31:50is the the NASA human space flight Mission.
- 31:54We're incredibly honored to that that NASA has selected Starship.
- 31:59Europe to take astronauts, back to the moon for the first time
- 32:04in half a century, which is kind of mind-blowing.
- 32:14I just like to say, like we're SpaceX is just deeply honored
- 32:17and appreciative that, that Master would choose us for this
- 32:22incredibly important Mission, and We'll get it done.
- 32:28And then there's also the dear moon mission which is going to
- 32:34take artists around the moon and that's a sucker miyazawa and
- 32:41he's a gigantic going to select, I think a dozen artists and and
- 32:47do a loop around the Moon. To be very exciting.
- 32:50And there's going to be some future announcements that I
- 32:52think people will be pretty fired up about.
- 32:54So, All right, super exciting. Future ahead with this probably
- 33:01be a few bumps in the road you know.
- 33:03But we want to iron those out with satellite missions and test
- 33:07missions and and and get to a high flight rate and then have
- 33:12something that's extremely reliable for for human
- 33:14spaceflight. So yeah.

- 39:03Yes, this six Raptors on Starship, currently three with
- 39:08the vacuum nozzle, three sea level.
- 39:10Sorry, check John. And I think if I would say like
- 39:16we're probably end up adding another three vacuum engines,
- 39:19they kind of, you know, fill in the gaps and stretch the ship I
- 39:24think is going to make a lot of sense.
- 39:29You'll have to yell unfortunately psyches.
- 39:33We are building a launch site. A Starship launch launch Tower
- 39:39at 39a at Cape Kennedy and we are also building a Starship
- 39:45production facility at the cape, so we'll have production
- 39:48facility and launch site here and a production facility in
- 39:50launch site at the cape as well. Support to have redundancy over
- 40:00here. I've got lice in my eyes.
- 40:02So unfortunately, I can't say I'm blinded so I can hear what
- 40:07the speakers coming from you should.
- 40:10I believe you're expecting to hear in a couple weeks about the
- 40:14possible finding of no significant impact from the FAA.
- 40:18Have you gotten any indications if that's going to come through
- 40:21and what is your time frame? Aim for the orbital flight test.
- 40:26Thanks. Well, we don't have, we don't
- 40:32have a ton of insight into the where things stand with the FAA.
- 40:37We have gotten, sort of a rough indication that there may be an
- 40:42approval in March but that's that's all we know.
- 40:48So how you Lon Marcus Harvey? Can you talk about the
- 40:54point-to-point capability? Where is there a possibility
- 40:56between here and Cape? Canaveral?
- 41:00Oh well yeah, I guess technically.
- 41:02Yes. So I mean depending on on how
- 41:08good things get with with Starship, they are some
- 41:11scenarios where it might actually be the lowest cost
- 41:15means of transporting cargo long distances.
- 41:22So the interesting thing is that the capital efficiency of of a
- 41:27rocket is as much better than the capital efficiency of a
- 41:30plane for long-distance flights. So if you now this would really
- 41:34be more for Or, you know, if you're going like, I don't know,
- 41:37a quarter or third, or half way around the world, where, you
- 41:42know, if, if you went from, I don't know.
- 41:45Say here to Singapore or something like that as a long
- 41:49flight. So, I mean, I don't know how
- 41:52long that is. I'm not sure you can even go
- 41:53there non-stop, but it's probably like 20 hours plus and
- 41:59but in a rocket it would be less than an hour.
- 42:02So like 45 minutes or thereabouts.
- 42:04So That means your be able to use the rocket 20 times more
- 42:11often than than an aircraft. So it's 20 times the capital
- 42:15efficiency so provided the propellant cost is, you know,
- 42:22competitive with with aircraft and bear in mind like a saying
- 42:26like it's this three and a half tons of of liquid oxygen for
- 42:31every one ton of fuel. So and Liquid oxygen is
- 42:36basically just elect the cost of electricity and yeah, because
- 42:43it's in the are basically. So I'd there is a scenario where
- 42:48it's economically compelling to do long-distance cargo and and
- 42:53people transport with Starship. I've been very cool and I think
- 43:00that that would be great for getting a lot of a high flight
- 43:02rate and you know, business case for supporting a lot of
- 43:06Starships operating basically, nothing's faster than, you know,
- 43:11an ICBM We got a question right here, Ilan.
- 43:16Right in the middle right here. Right?
- 43:17Hands up hands up in the, I mean, it's either, they have
- 43:21lights in my eyes and I its pitch dark.
- 43:23In front of me is fine. High on Michael sheets with.
- 43:26CNBC you open this presentation by addressing a little bit of
- 43:30the criticism that's been aimed at space travel being seen as
- 43:33maybe a pet project or not really valuable to folks have
- 43:37problems here on Earth. I was wondering if you get a
- 43:38little more into the specifics on comparing not just the US
- 43:42government spending that's happening on space travel.
- 43:44Versus other things. But maybe in terms of SpaceX
- 43:47itself how you and private investment on a dollar value
- 43:51compares to the taxpayer funded projects or contracts that
- 43:55SpaceX is 1 over the years. what I think, you know the
- 44:01objectively the cost efficiency of SpaceX is the the best in
- 44:09history, I think for any rocket development and we are talking
- 44:15about a You know, a rocket that's taught more than twice
- 44:21the mass and thrust of a Saturn 5 and also designed to be fully
- 44:24reusable, which is obviously also much better for from an
- 44:27environmental standpoint. Have a fully reusable rocket for
- 44:32a development cost that is I don't know, between 5 and 10% of
- 44:37Saturn 5. So that's pretty good.
- 44:43Because we need to make it work so work yet, but it's a, it will
- 44:46work. Might be a few bumps along the
- 44:49road but it'll work. I feel At this point, highly
- 44:56confident that we'll get to orbit this year.
- 45:00That's, you know, we're making a lot of rockets making a lot of
- 45:03engines were close to achieving one Raptor to Everyday
- 45:10production rate. So we're sort of seven a week,
- 45:15which is tough for our complex engine.
- 45:18And I think by the end of this year, we'll be able to produce a
- 45:22ship in a booster per month. So, so, This is, this is, I
- 45:28don't know, at least an order of magnitude.
- 45:30Maybe maybe tours magnitude more efficient than anything in the
- 45:33past. yeah, so Hey Ilan, this we were left for supercluster.
- 45:47Just wondering what does spacex's plan and timeline look
- 45:50like if the FAA ultimately decided to do a deeper
- 45:54environmental review of Starbase and then one other thing I might
- 45:58be able to give us an updated figure on what it costs to
- 46:03Starship and what it would store Kosta Kosta VAR Q 2 by a 1 1.
- 46:08Thanks. Yeah, I mean, I I am optimistic
- 46:12that we will get approval like I think they're objectively.
- 46:19I think this is not something that will be harmful to the
- 46:23environment. We've obviously flown the ship
- 46:26several times and done, you know, multiple Landings and
- 46:30takeoffs landings. We fired the engines a lot.
- 46:32So I think the reality is that that it would not have a
- 46:38significant impact. Now of course the that doesn't
- 46:43mean things don't get delayed from a regulatory standpoint and
- 46:48we are in a litigious society and so there's this or sort of
- 46:52lawsuits from someone's lawsuit City.
- 46:56So now we do have the alternative of the cape and we
- 47:02actually applied for environmental approval for
- 47:05launch from the cape a few years ago and received it.
- 47:09So we actually are Approved from an environmental standpoint to
- 47:12launch from 39a. So I guess I'll worst-case
- 47:16scenario is that we would, I don't know if you'd be delayed
- 47:21for 466 or six to eight months to build up the cape launch
- 47:28Tower and launch from there. From a cost standpoint.
- 47:37The costs will improve significantly over time so
- 47:45because it'll take us a moment to achieve full reusability and
- 47:49full of Rapid reusability, will probably lose a few Vehicles
- 47:52along the way with Falcon 9. I think it took us 14 or 15
- 48:00attempts to successfully land the first booster.
- 48:04I don't think it'll take us that many with Starship, because we
- 48:08have that experience, but it's certainly not a sure thing that
- 48:12it'll work the first time I from a cost standpoint.
- 48:22I mean it's a hundred ton capability to orbit.
- 48:28On a marginal cost to launch basis, you know, that doesn't
- 48:32count fixed costs, which obviously have to be covered.
- 48:35It may be as little as a few million dollars per flight,
- 48:40maybe even as low as a million dollars per flight.
- 48:43So this is crazy. These are crazy low numbers by
- 48:46space standards. Crazy low.
- 48:51Now, we do have to cover fixed cost.
- 48:53So depending on what I launched rate is, we have to divide the
- 48:57fixed cost by the number of launches.
- 48:59So the more launches that happen, the lower the total cost
- 49:03of fully considered cost per flight would be But I'm highly
- 49:10confident. It would be less than ten
- 49:12million dollars all in over. You know, if you say like fast
- 49:17forward like two or three years from now, I think it's highly
- 49:20likely to be everything included, less than 10 million
- 49:24dollars, a flight for 100 ton to overt capability and hundred
- 49:28tons to a useful. Oh but not to a low orbit to a
- 49:31low over to be 150 times. So this is ridiculously good.
- 49:37Bye compared to everything else and it should be.
- 49:40Because if you think of like, if this was a, if aircraft were not
- 49:46reusable, how much would an air ticket cost?
- 49:49I mean, you know, it's like for what, you know, a 787 or triple
- 49:56seven goes for these days. I do a few hundred million
- 49:58dollars. The if you had to spend two
- 50:01hundred million dollars, every flight, it would be very
- 50:04expensive. Pensive to fly somewhere.
- 50:05I you need two of them for another one, for the return
- 50:08trip. So, obviously be absurd.
- 50:14So you can imagine if we were in a world where aircraft Were
- 50:17Expendable, and then someone came along with a reusable
- 50:21aircraft, it would be an absolutely profound game
- 50:24changer. That's what that's what needs to
- 50:29happen for life to become multiplanetary and that's that's
- 50:32what this design. I'm confident is is capable of
- 50:36that? It's just a question of how long
- 50:38it will take to refine that and have it really dialed.

- 50:53I wanted to know when and how do you plan to test Starship
- 50:58refueling in space and also aside from NASA?
- 51:01Dear Moon, and Starling can you elaborate on the potential

- 51:22When and okay, when and how do you plan a test Starship
- 51:28refueling in space and aside from NASA?
- 51:31Dear Moon, and starlene can you elaborate on potential customers
- 51:34for Starship? Thank you.
- 51:38I think open or refilling and I won't have size.
- 51:42It is refilling not refueling because it's a three and a half
- 51:44times as much oxygen than fuel. So we mostly are carrying oxygen
- 51:49up there. Optimistically towards the end
- 51:55of next year. I think I'd be surprised if it's
- 52:00longer than two years for doing the refilling.
- 52:06And there are a lot of additional customers that will
- 52:11want to use Starship, I don't want to steal their Thunder
- 52:13that's they're going to make their announcements and so, but
- 52:18I think this will get a lot of use.
- 52:20A lot of attention. It's like, said it's, you know,
- 52:27once we make this work, It's a naturally profound breakthrough
- 52:34in access to orbit and when you have an utterly profound
- 52:39breakthrough is the use cases will be hard to imagine.
- 52:45I mean, you know, when when aircraft first came along they
- 52:53were aircraft were viewed as toys.
- 52:55Like they were like a novelty, not a means of Transport.
- 53:00They were like, oh look, we can Fly Like a Bird briefly for
- 53:04briefly, in dangerously for a few minutes.
- 53:10You know, nobody at the time of these, I think very few people
- 53:13at the time thought that there would be a global aircraft
- 53:18industry. He with airports throughout the
- 53:19world carrying people. To every part of the earth in
- 53:28ridiculously short periods of time.
- 53:33You know, when when the Wright brothers first took off, I mean,
- 53:36most people were just riding horses.
- 53:38So you like, you know, like riding a horse.
- 53:42See this crazy device looks like Witchcraft and they would not
- 53:49have imagined that they would be aircraft flying tens of
- 53:54thousands of aircraft flying to every corner of the world.
- 53:59So I think we made this, this really could be an extremely
- 54:04profound situation and we really can't even imagine all the use
- 54:09cases at this point. Hi Ilan.

- 54:18Thank you for the presentation. So at the FAA does come back and
- 54:24say we need an Eis. Does Starbase bounced back from
- 54:28that at some point. Yeah, I mean we're it would
- 54:33obviously set us back for quite some time because Annie is takes
- 54:39a lot longer than an EA so we would have to shift our
- 54:45priorities to Cape Kennedy. Okay.
- 54:49And the long-term, what do you envision for Starbase?
- 54:52Like a Spaceport with flights coming and going and Starship
- 54:55manufacturing or what is the future role of Starbase?
- 55:00The future also base, I think it's well suited to be kind of
- 55:04like our Advanced R&D location. So it's like where we were, try
- 55:09out new designs and new versions of the rocket.
- 55:15And, and then I think probably Cape Kennedy would be our sort
- 55:20of main operational launch site. And then I don't know over time,
- 55:25I think there's going to be will have floating space ports like
- 55:29ocean. Art's, we got these two
- 55:32converted oil rigs that are that are going to be turned into
- 55:37orbital launch sites and they can be moved around the world.
- 55:42so, you know, that guy, I think that could be quite a few of
- 55:48those and I think about like, think about like What would
- 55:55really work for long distance travel because the rocket is
- 56:00quite loud. You want to be, you know, I
- 56:05don't know 20 miles away from a major city or 30 miles away from
- 56:08major city just so you don't, you know, you're not just
- 56:15serving people too much. So I think probably most of the
- 56:20launch sites. Long term will be kind of Ocean
- 56:24or sea spaceports. So like baby may be located,
- 56:29like 20 miles 30 miles off shore.
- 56:32And this would allow Starship to connect any cities that are on
- 56:41the ocean, or on the sea and, and have a high flight rate, but
- 56:47without disturbing people too much.
- 56:51And I think people are willing to, you know, have Have
- 56:54something that's loud occasionally, but if you want to
- 56:56have it frequently than it probably needs to be offshore.
- 57:04Hello, you Lon can Gerlach with the SpaceX Reddit community.
- 57:08So you've talked a lot about how Raptor to is crucially important
- 57:11for Starship development and for the future of Starship.
- 57:14So I'm curious what general improvements have you made with
- 57:18raptor to, to ensure it's not only more efficient more
- 57:21powerful, but also, but also much easier easier to produce
- 57:24and less expensive as well. I'm faster and how do you, how
- 57:28do you plan to continue to iterate further on the design in
- 57:30the future? so, Raptor to is.
- 57:42An almost complete redesign relative to raptor1.
- 57:45So, basically everything for the tub Machinery to the the chamber
- 57:50and nozzle, the electronics, basically, everything has been
- 57:55redesigned. You can see the difference.
- 57:57But over there, the Raptor one versus Raptor Raptor to the, you
- 58:04know, a lot of the changes were deleting things that we deleted
- 58:08a lot Consolidated, a lot. The.
- 58:15Rotating Machinery, especially the Doozers of the toe.
- 58:18Pumps are a lot more robust. We converted a bunch of flanges
- 58:27to welds and we're actually over time will convert even more
- 58:32flanges to welds? I hate flanges you know
- 58:36especially if you've got a high pressure and Anna cryogenic
- 58:41fluid or super hot gas flanges and seals are a nightmare and so
- 58:48you know we've got parts of that engine that are You know sort of
- 58:54seven 800 bar lesser eleven, twelve thousand PSI, which is
- 58:59Naughty and and so just going to welded joints and instead of
- 59:05flanges was pretty helpful. The pre burner controllers have
- 59:11been Consolidated into sort of unified box, as opposed to being
- 59:15kind of, like all over the engine.
- 59:18So, and we're getting close to the point where I think rap.
- 59:22Or will not need shrouds. So shrouds a huge pain in the
- 59:25ass, like basically putting a whole shield around the engine
- 59:28especially for the again gambling engines where it's got
- 59:30to kind of like have like a sort of you know, I bull seal like
- 59:35it's like rotating in a circle with a hot gas seal.
- 59:38So with a bit more deletion and integration.
- 59:44I think we the engine will be sort of flameproof or less and
- 59:51and then we can get rid of shrouds.
- 59:52Which would be a big Mass savings?
- 59:55Yeah, so A lot more to go on we're also operating at a higher
- 1:00:03chamber pressure. I think I think we could
- 1:00:07probably operate I think over time we can operate it at 3:30
- 1:00:13bar sustained in the main chamber.
- 1:00:18And without having the the PreRunner pressures be too high
- 1:00:24by essentially not by losing less pressure.
- 1:00:29There's like a whole pressure ladder going from the toe pumps
- 1:00:32and prerunners to the main chamber and by getting rid of a
- 1:00:36bunch of the choke points. We can have less pressure loss.
- 1:00:40And so the pumps can effectively produce more pressure in the
- 1:00:46main chamber. due to less, if you feel less lost in this
- 1:00:53secondary systems, Germany and I have specific questions or sorry
- 1:01:02Ike risk apart with NASA space flight.
- 1:01:04Can you talk a little bit about the abort modes that are
- 1:01:07available for ship if there were ever to be a problem during the
- 1:01:10climb to orbit? What would be available to the
- 1:01:12crew in that regard and also on that same level of the life?
- 1:01:16Support systems for ship? Where do those stand and what
- 1:01:19are the challenges that you're finding with?
- 1:01:21Just the sheer volume in Starship for that?
- 1:01:24Thank you. So Sasha will not have an
- 1:01:29independent abort system, but I think something that would make
- 1:01:32sense is to have the Thruster weight of the ship, be enough
- 1:01:37that it could do a. It could take off from the
- 1:01:47booster even if the booster has a failure at the pad level.
- 1:01:50So you can get the the thrust to weight of the ship at sea level
- 1:01:55above 1. Then, even if Is something goes
- 1:01:58wrong with the Brewster. The ship can essentially fly
- 1:02:00away from the booster and so That's something that I think
- 1:02:06would be important for for carrying people and also, for
- 1:02:10high value cargo to have the ship have a Thrust to weight,
- 1:02:13greater than one, even at sea level.
- 1:02:17And then the there's like I said, I that would be like the
- 1:02:21nine engine version and and then even if you lost one engine, I
- 1:02:26think you should still be able to do an abort.
- 1:02:29So I think for crewed missions were essentially a beedi tank
- 1:02:32the ship To some degree. So that you'd have kind of a
- 1:02:37launch abort capability with a ship.
- 1:02:38Even if you lost an engine, that that would be my recommendation
- 1:02:42from a life support standpoint. We would have a Sort of, sort of
- 1:02:53a renewable I like before long. You know, we could scale up the
- 1:03:00life support system in dragon. That would certainly be an
- 1:03:02option and that would work for Missions that are say a week or
- 1:03:09two weeks, that that would be fine for Missions to Mars.
- 1:03:13You'd want a life support system.
- 1:03:16That is a renewable. So it's essentially recycling
- 1:03:21everything in a closed loop system with close to zero lost
- 1:03:28Mass, so that would be a more advanced system, could have to
- 1:03:36convert the CO2 back in 2002 and kind of recycle, you know, poop
- 1:03:44and urine and stuff. Yeah, so that that's a harder
- 1:03:50problem but it's not, it's not an immediate problem.
- 1:03:53We can certainly scale up dragon for any kind of missions that
- 1:03:57are, you know, a few weeks long Hi Ilana, Eric burger with
- 1:04:02arstechnica. Thanks for taking some
- 1:04:04questions. I'm wondering if you do get that
- 1:04:07approval from the FAA in March. I know that there's really no
- 1:04:10way of knowing. But could you talk a little bit
- 1:04:12about the hardware Readiness, sort of where you are?
- 1:04:15Technically, you know, the launched hours is pretty
- 1:04:18incredible but sort of the rocket, the ground system
- 1:04:21software, like, if you were to get some kind of approval from
- 1:04:25the FAA and March, you know, would you be looking at, you
- 1:04:28know, how quickly could the hardware be ready to go?
- 1:04:33Yeah. I mean I think we're close to
- 1:04:36having the hardware ready to go. So right now, I think we're
- 1:04:41tracking to have the regulatory approval and Hardware Readiness
- 1:04:47around the same time. Yeah.
- 1:04:52So Yeah, Rhonda said you know, hopefully you know, basically
- 1:04:58couple months for both. Yeah.
- 1:05:08Hi, Seth murkowski was spacer. Sports.com, you mentioned
- 1:05:11launching from the sea. Could you give us a update on
- 1:05:13the current status of using Phobos and Deimos for Starship
- 1:05:17operations? Yeah, so Phobos and Deimos thus
- 1:05:20far have been a relatively low priority.
- 1:05:25We needed to make the launch site here.
- 1:05:27Work, this has been quite a difficult Endeavor.
- 1:05:33So we do you, prioritize the Phobos and Deimos.
- 1:05:38And just last month, we started to, we're going to take one of
- 1:05:45them and, and build, at least a catch though.
- 1:05:49On it so and and ultimately we will ultimately meaning like, I
- 1:05:55don't know later this year. But will they a full launch
- 1:06:00capability on on one of the platforms?
- 1:06:05So, I think hopefully, by the end of this year, we will have a
- 1:06:09launch capability at Cape, Kennedy at 39a and on one of the
- 1:06:15ocean platforms as well. Hi Ellen.

- 1:07:14Okay, so a little bit more Raptor to talk again, where you
- 1:07:18at, as far as production, how many do you have you know, you
- 1:07:22you know are they how are they handling?
- 1:07:24You know, testing are they more cantankerous, less cantankerous,
- 1:07:28you know just give us a little more rundown like and we're
- 1:07:30actually at is that a bottleneck for the next booster as well?
- 1:07:33We assume the next booster is going to require, you know,
- 1:07:36Raptor You so kind of where you at with with the production and
- 1:07:39the and the testing so far. Well, I mean right now of any
- 1:07:44technical problem, I'm spending the most time personally on a
- 1:07:50Raptor too. Like really, they're like the
- 1:07:55two things that occupy the most number of mental Cycles or
- 1:07:58Raptor to and Tesla pull self-driving.
- 1:08:00So the only remaining issue that we're aware of is melting the
- 1:08:10chamber so that thing really wants to melt you know as feel
- 1:08:16like on the order of a gigawatt of heat so it's pretty hot like
- 1:08:21a gigawatts like it. What a nuclear power plant
- 1:08:22produces so it really Is desperately trying to melt at
- 1:08:25any point in time. So we've got, you know, a
- 1:08:31flowing in an immense amount of cryogenic fuel to cool.
- 1:08:36The chamber in the channels, we have headend film cooling.
- 1:08:41We've got Throat film Cooling and we're just trying to get the
- 1:08:46exact sort of balance between head and from Cooling and throw
- 1:08:50it from cooling to, not melts the chamber.
- 1:08:55I think we're pretty close. Like we have, we have a couple
- 1:09:00engines in the stand that that have.
- 1:09:04I think seven or eight hundred seconds of operation and several
- 1:09:09start Cycles. So it's looking looking
- 1:09:13positive. But that's the, that's the
- 1:09:15that's the remaining issue. Is melting the chamber.
- 1:09:22But in the meantime, we're scaling up old production to get
- 1:09:25to one a day or better. So apart from melted Chambers,
- 1:09:30we're doing well. We've got a lot of pumps, a lot
- 1:09:34of electronics, the lot of PreRunner controllers.
- 1:09:36So just a not melting. The chamber is very difficult,
- 1:09:43is the kind of the last remaining challenge. but I think
- 1:09:48we're very close to solving that and then the production system
- 1:09:54is as a lot of momentum like I said, you know, we're really
- 1:10:00Like next week, we'll probably make at least five or six, or
- 1:10:04after twos. For example, and I think we'll
- 1:10:09be at a 7 or week or better by next month.
- 1:10:17But these does a crazy crazy numbers for Rocket engines, by
- 1:10:20the way. Yeah, hi hon, Robert Pearlman
- 1:10:25with space.com and collect space.
- 1:10:27You mentioned the NASA contract for the human Landing system.
- 1:10:30That one point. Do you envision splintering
- 1:10:33splintering off development of Starship for hls or how are you
- 1:10:37going to balance the timelines of Rapid reusability versus
- 1:10:41NASA's own schedule of when they're ready to go to the Moon?
- 1:10:47I don't think there's really a conflict there.
- 1:10:52We're going to be making a lot of ships, a lot of boosters
- 1:10:56obviously a lot of engines. yeah, it's kind of interesting
- 1:11:02like the The with the booster with 33 engines and the ship
- 1:11:07with nine engines is 42, here we go again and that also totally
- 1:11:13total coincidence. So, You know adding legs to land
- 1:11:24on the moon. We do not think is like that's
- 1:11:28that can be done pretty quickly. So I yeah, I don't really see
- 1:11:34any conflict between the achieving rapid reusability and
- 1:11:38and getting to the Moon. Yeah, the high production rate
- 1:11:47solves, many ills. So we're aiming for high

- 1:11:57I'm wondering if you can clarify the number of launches that you
- 1:12:01plan to conduct in order to do these re fillings, I know a lot
- 1:12:05of numbers have been thrown around so I'm wondering if you
- 1:12:07have landed on a final number and how quickly do you plan to
- 1:12:11launch? Those missions back to back to

- 1:12:27fast for refilling the vehicles to minimize boil off of the
- 1:12:33cryogenic propellant. So for the, for the vehicle,
- 1:12:40going to the Moon, we have some insulation to minimize boil off.
- 1:12:49But would probably be launching. I don't know.
- 1:12:51Probably every few hours. Aspirationally.

- 1:13:10know anything about the interior design for crude Starship.
- 1:13:15You have hls. You have dear Moon.
- 1:13:18And last, we heard maybe a year or two ago.
- 1:13:21You were looking to hire Tesla employees to design the interior
- 1:13:25for Starship. How's that going?
- 1:13:29Well, we aren't fake fur. Singing a lot on the interior
- 1:13:34quite yet, I mean that will be important down the road, but our
- 1:13:38Focus right now is just getting to obit and proving out Return
- 1:13:43of the booster and return of the ship.
- 1:13:49Yeah, it's fundamentally very difficult to build a fully
- 1:13:53reusable rocket, given the strength of Earth's gravity and
- 1:13:57the density of our atmosphere. Like, there's no you can't have
- 1:14:04a lot of mass margin. So our focus is solving that
- 1:14:09Rapid or usability. Like I said, we'll have a high
- 1:14:16production rate, so we're not dependent on Rapido, we're not
- 1:14:20dependent on full reusability but but really that's the
- 1:14:23Breakthrough. That's, that's fundamentally
- 1:14:25important to change the course of human civilization to become
- 1:14:28a multi-planet species. He on this will be the last

- 1:15:28community and You know, something that just happens over
- 1:15:34time with Society is that kind of rules and regulations build
- 1:15:39up, and they build up, you know, more in some places than others
- 1:15:45and they didn't, you know, I think Texas has the the right
- 1:15:51amount of rules and regulations. Yeah.
