- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. And it is a Monday.
- 0:15It is the 29th of September. Great to have your company at
- 0:18the start of a new week. And this might be the start of a
- 0:21new week, but it is the end of our journey through the book of
- 0:24Acts Today and tomorrow we'll finish off the last two chapters
- 0:28of Acts and then we will crack open the phenomenal book of
- 0:32Romans where Paul lays out so much in the way of theology and
- 0:37thinking and urging unity in our church.
- 0:39But we'll get to that on Wednesday.
- 0:41For now, we are going to see Paul attempt to get to Rome, not
- 0:45so successfully today, but he'll get there tomorrow.
- 0:48But on the way, some high drama in the high seas as we read
- 0:53together Acts Chapter 27. When the time came, we set sail
- 1:08for Italy. Paul and several other prisoners
- 1:11were placed in the custody of a Roman officer named Julius, a
- 1:14captain of the imperial regiment.
- 1:17Aristarchus, a Macedonian from Thessalonica, was also with us.
- 1:22We left on a ship whose home port was Adramiteus, on the
- 1:25northwest coast of the province of Asia.
- 1:28It was scheduled to make several stops at ports along the coast
- 1:31of the province the next day when we docked at Sidon.
- 1:35Julius was very kind to Paul and let him go ashore to visit his
- 1:39friends so they could provide for his needs.
- 1:43Putting out the sea from there, we encountered strong headwinds
- 1:47that made it difficult to keep the ship on course, so we sailed
- 1:51north of Cyprus between the island and the mainland.
- 1:55Keeping to the open sea, we passed along the coast of
- 1:58Sicilia and Pamphylia, landing at Myra in the province of
- 2:02Lycia. There the commanding officer
- 2:05found an Egyptian ship from Alexandria that was bound for
- 2:08Italy, and he put us on board. We had several days of slow
- 2:13sailing and after great difficulty we finally neared
- 2:17Nidus, but the wind was against us, so we sailed across Tikrit
- 2:22and along the sheltered coast of the island past the Cape of
- 2:26Salmone. We struggled along the coast
- 2:28with great difficulty and finally arrived at Fair Havens
- 2:32near the town of Lacea. We had lost a lot of time.
- 2:37The weather was becoming dangerous for sea travel because
- 2:39it was so late in the fall, and Paul spoke to the ship's
- 2:42officers about it. Men, he said.
- 2:46I believe there is trouble ahead if we go on shipwreck, loss of
- 2:49cargo, and danger to all our lives as well.
- 2:53But the officer in charge of the prisoners listened more to the
- 2:56ship's captain and the owner than to Paul.
- 2:59And since Fair Havens was an exposed harbour, a poor place to
- 3:03spend the winter, most of the crew wanted to go on to Phoenix,
- 3:07farther up the coast of Crete, and spend the winter there.
- 3:10Phoenix was a good harbour with only a southwest and northwest
- 3:14exposure. When a light wind began blowing
- 3:18from the South, the sailors thought they could make it, so
- 3:21they pulled up anchor and sailed close to the shore of Crete.
- 3:25But the weather changed abruptly and a wind of typhoon strength
- 3:29called the northeaster burst across the island and blew us
- 3:33out to sea. The sailors couldn't turn the
- 3:35ship into the wind, so they gave up and let it run before the
- 3:39Gale. We sailed along the sheltered
- 3:42side of a small island named Corda, where with great
- 3:45difficulty, we hoisted aboard the lifeboat being towed behind
- 3:49us. When the sailors bound ropes
- 3:51around the hull of the ship to strengthen it, they were afraid
- 3:54of being driven across to the sandbars of Sertis off the
- 3:58African coast, so they lowered the sea anchor to slow the ship
- 4:02and were driven before the wind. The next day, as Gale force
- 4:07winds continued to batter the ship, the crew began throwing
- 4:10the cargo overboard. The following day they even took
- 4:14some of the ship's gear and threw it overboard.
- 4:16The terrible storm raged for many days, blotting out the sun
- 4:21and the stars, until at last all hope was gone.
- 4:26No one had eaten for a long time.
- 4:28Finally, Paul called the crew together and said, Men, you
- 4:33should have listened to me in the 1st place and not left
- 4:35Crete. You would have avoided all this
- 4:38damage and loss, but take courage.
- 4:41None of you will lose your lives, even though the ship will
- 4:44go down. For last night an Angel of the
- 4:46Lord to whom I belong and whom I serve stood beside me.
- 4:52And he said, don't be afraid Paul, for you will surely stand
- 4:56trial before Caesar. What's more, God in his goodness
- 5:00has granted safety to everyone sailing with you.
- 5:04So take courage, for I believe God it will be just as he said,
- 5:10but we will be shipwrecked on an island.
- 5:14About midnight on the 14th night of the storm, as we were being
- 5:17driven across the Sea of Adria, the sailors sensed land was
- 5:21near. They dropped a weighted line and
- 5:24found that the water was 120 feet deep.
- 5:27But a little later they measured again and found it was only 90
- 5:31feet deep. At this rate, they were afraid
- 5:33we would be driven against the rocks along the shore.
- 5:36So they threw out four anchors from the back of the ship and
- 5:39prayed for daylight. Then the sailors tried to
- 5:43abandon ship. They lowered the lifeboat as
- 5:46though they were going to put out anchors from the front of
- 5:48the ship. But Paul said to the commanding
- 5:50officer and the soldiers, you will all die unless the sailors
- 5:54stay aboard. So the soldiers cut the ropes to
- 5:57the lifeboat and let it drift away.
- 6:00Just as day was dawning, Paul urged everyone to eat.
- 6:04You have been so worried that you haven't touched food for two
- 6:08weeks, he said. Please eat something now for
- 6:11your own good, for not a hair of your heads will perish.
- 6:15Then he took some bread, gave thanks to God before them all,
- 6:19and broke off a piece and ate it.
- 6:21Then everyone was encouraged and began to eat, all 276 of us who
- 6:27were on board. After eating, the crew lightened
- 6:30the ship further by throwing the cargo of wheat overboard.
- 6:34When morning dawned, they didn't recognise the coastline, but
- 6:38they saw a Bay with the beach and wondered if they could get
- 6:41to shore by running the ship aground.
- 6:43So they cut off the anchors and left them in the sea.
- 6:47Then they lowered the rudders, raised the foresail and headed
- 6:51towards shore. But they hit a Shoal and ran the
- 6:54ship aground too soon. The bow of the ship stuck fast
- 6:58while the stern was repeatedly smashed by the force of the
- 7:01waves and began to break apart. The soldiers wanted to kill the
- 7:05prisoners to make sure they didn't swim ashore and escape.
- 7:09But the commanding officer wanted to spare Paul, so he
- 7:12didn't let them carry out their plan.
- 7:14Then he ordered all who could swim to jump overboard first and
- 7:18make for land. The others held on to planks or
- 7:21debris from the broken ship, so everyone escaped safely to
- 7:26shore. Ah, Lord, I am grateful that
- 7:38this is not a normal part of my life, having to deal with
- 7:42shipwrecks like this. But Lord, we see that even in
- 7:46this most dire of situations, as the shipwreck is taking place,
- 7:51you are there with your people. You are guiding them.
- 7:56You are giving them safe passage through the storm to the other
- 7:59side. Oh Lord, we may not be
- 8:02shipwrecked on a regular basis, but we certainly do have
- 8:07challenging times and metaphorical shipwrecks in our
- 8:09lives. And Lord, I wonder where you are
- 8:13in those times. I wonder how it is that you are
- 8:16guiding us and leading us. Jesus, as we find ourselves in
- 8:21those turbulent, difficult, stormy seas, I pray that the
- 8:26question would always be, where is Jesus holding me and leading
- 8:31me through this so that we can see your hand at play and we can
- 8:36know that our lives are held by you to bring about your glory to
- 8:43your Kingdom, no matter how out of control it feels.
- 8:48Thank you that You do hold our lives so closely with such love
- 8:52and generosity and mercy. You are a good, good God, and we
- 8:58love you, and we thank you for all that You are, all that
- 9:02you've done for us, and most of all for what you've done for us
- 9:06through Jesus. And so we pray all of this in
- 9:09your name, Jesus, Amen.
