Transcript
- 0:13So, so I was looking at the numbers from this recent report on the plugin
- 0:16repository, and, er, it really hit me.
- 0:20The classic ninety nine dollar a month agency care plan, you know,
- 0:24where you charge a client to run updates and click buttons,
- 0:27it is essentially dead walking.
- 0:28It, it really is.
- 0:29I mean, when tools like WPadmin.AI or Benjamin Intal's new Ahentic AI workspace can
- 0:36handle full site migrations, database cleanups, and troubleshooting inside wp admin
- 0:42in literally three seconds using native APIs, what are you actually billing ninety
- 0:47nine dollars for?
- 0:48Right, right, exactly.
- 0:50And it gets even worse when you look at what clients are actually paying you to
- 0:53maintain.
- 0:54WP Goldmine did an audit of 57,383 plugins in the directory,
- 1:00and twenty four percent of plugins in the ten thousand to one hundred thousand
- 1:04active install range haven't been updated in over two years.
- 1:07That is twelve hundred and nine popular plugins with massive user bases just sitting
- 1:11there, completely abandoned.
- 1:13Wait, twenty four percent?
- 1:15Almost a quarter of those mid tier plugins are just ghost ships?
- 1:18A quarter!
- 1:19Things like Limit Login Attempts or WP Downgrade.
- 1:22So agencies are sending monthly invoices for quote unquote proactive maintenance,
- 1:27while literally quarter of the key plugins on the site haven't seen a single line of
- 1:32code changed since 2024.
- 1:35I, I actually had a client ask me about this last month.
- 1:38They installed Novamira CLI, connected Claude Code directly to their terminal,
- 1:42and watched an AI prompt execute a full staging update, run visual regression tests,
- 1:48and push to production automatically.
- 1:50They literally sent me a screenshot and said, um, hey Nick,
- 1:53why am I paying your retainers when a terminal command does this in twenty seconds?
- 1:57That is the moment right there.
- 1:59The moment the client realizes that routine maintenance has zero marginal cost,
- 2:03the legacy care plan collapses overnight.
- 2:06So if the ninety nine dollar care plan is dead, where does that leave agencies?
- 2:11I mean, do web design shops even exist in two years, or does everyone have to
- 2:16rebrand as an AI systems integration firm?
- 2:18Well, the forward thinking agencies aren't competing with the agents,
- 2:22they are configuring them.
- 2:23They are pivoting to what I call Agent Architecture.
- 2:26Instead of ninety nine dollars for updates, they are charging five thousand dollars
- 2:30or more up front, plus high margin retainers, to set up governance,
- 2:34sandboxing, and permission structures for tools like Angie Super Admin Mode.
- 2:39Because when you give an AI agent super admin rights where it can execute PHP,
- 2:44query the database, and write to the file system, you need serious guardrails.
- 2:50You need human in the loop controls, security boundary auditing,
- 2:54and proper API scoping so the agent doesn't accidentally drop a database table or
- 2:59expose private client data.
- 3:01Yes!
- 3:02And it extends to how sites are discovered now too.
- 3:04Traditional SEO retainers tuned keyword density.
- 3:08Now agencies are building AI ready infrastructure, setting up clean schema,
- 3:12dedicated REST endpoints, and llms.txt files so ChatGPT, Claude,
- 3:18and Gemini can index and recommend the business directly.
- 3:20And look at security.
- 3:22When WordPress seven point zero point two came out as an emergency release to fix
- 3:26that REST API batch route Remote Code Execution bug reported by Adam Kues,
- 3:32clients didn't just need a patch pushed.
- 3:35They needed supply chain verification to make sure no rogue agent or stale plugin
- 3:39had been exploited before the patch landed.
- 3:41Exactly.
- 3:42The agencies that survive 2027 won't be hand crafting pages or clicking update
- 3:46buttons.
- 3:47They will be managing fleets of autonomous site agents, enforcing security policy,
- 3:51and ensuring their clients are visible to AI engines.
- 3:54It is a total shift from manual site maintenance to intelligent agent governance,
- 3:58and honestly, the shops making that jump right now are going to dominate.
