- 0:00Speaker 1: And we were talking a little bit earlier this morning
- 0:02Speaker 1: about some of the different events that are underway right
- 0:05Speaker 1: around the Northern Territory at the moment. There is so
- 0:08Speaker 1: much happening around the territory and so many more wonderful
- 0:12Speaker 1: events set to get underway. We spoke further about what's
- 0:16Speaker 1: happening with the supercars. We're going to find out a
- 0:18Speaker 1: little bit later about the nt City to Serve that
- 0:21Speaker 1: is just days away. But the garam A Lung Festival, well,
- 0:24Speaker 1: it kicks off today in fact, running from the twenty
- 0:28Speaker 1: fourth to Sunday, the twenty eighth of May, and there
- 0:31Speaker 1: is so much on as part of the garam A
- 0:33Speaker 1: Lung Festival. And joining me on the line right now
- 0:36Speaker 1: to talk a little bit more about the panel that
- 0:40Speaker 1: is going to be happening is Ursula Raymond. Good morning
- 0:44Speaker 1: to you, Ursula.
- 0:45Speaker 2: Hello Katie, Katie Keny, Oh very good.
- 0:49Speaker 1: Now. The irony is not lost on me interviewing you
- 0:52Speaker 1: this morning about the panels because many years ago, you
- 0:58Speaker 1: eight years ago, my self, myself and Ben Grat will
- 1:03Speaker 1: work together on the first ever Gamalung Festival.
- 1:06Speaker 2: Right, that's exactly right. We had such fun though, didn't
- 1:09Speaker 2: We did.
- 1:10Speaker 1: Sitting in August together our home panel chats every day.
- 1:17Speaker 2: It was fun. But it's gone a long way now
- 1:19Speaker 2: that it has grown so much, and so it's great.
- 1:22Speaker 2: It's amazing that first one that we worked it's actually
- 1:26Speaker 2: won on the War the National Award.
- 1:28Speaker 1: It's amazing just how much it's it's grown. Urseler, I
- 1:31Speaker 1: mean talk us through you know from your perspective why
- 1:34Speaker 1: it is such an important festival to start off with.
- 1:38Speaker 2: Well, I think because it's it's local. It's very local,
- 1:41Speaker 2: locally produced, very heavily involved with the Larakir people as well,
- 1:46Speaker 2: who gave us the name Garamalang. It's so it's to
- 1:50Speaker 2: celebrate the Aboriginal Tosa and the people in Darwin, including
- 1:55Speaker 2: other groups that have come from elsewhere. And it's a
- 1:59Speaker 2: really good thing is that there's so much talent out
- 2:01Speaker 2: there that everybody's invited to come along and check it
- 2:04Speaker 2: out in open opening ceremonies, free, the Mermaid exhibition tonight. Free.
- 2:09Speaker 2: You know, there's going to be food out the front
- 2:12Speaker 2: on the paving there from soul Essence, which is your
- 2:15Speaker 2: new First Nation restaurant down at Cullen. But it's just
- 2:18Speaker 2: going to be fantastic and there's so many different things
- 2:22Speaker 2: that people can tap into, you know, will just come
- 2:25Speaker 2: down and have a cup of tea. There's also a
- 2:26Speaker 2: Mother's Day event, you know breakfast, which started when we
- 2:30Speaker 2: started yea.
- 2:31Speaker 1: So he there is there so much on and one
- 2:34Speaker 1: of the things that you know that people really enjoy
- 2:37Speaker 1: going to is the panel and it's called Black Talk
- 2:40Speaker 1: and the Voice. Let's talk about the question you're going
- 2:44Speaker 1: to be moderating or hosting that. What can people expect.
- 2:49Speaker 2: Well, there's going to be a Senator Melan McCarthy's on
- 2:53Speaker 2: the panel as well as Tony McAvoy, who was the
- 2:55Speaker 2: last treaty commissioning here in order the territory and also
- 3:00Speaker 2: got who used to head up ATTIC nationally when Nattick
- 3:04Speaker 2: was around, and he's a ragery man from the New
- 3:06Speaker 2: South Wales. So it's just wanting to talk about what
- 3:11Speaker 2: the Voice is and what it means to every day
- 3:13Speaker 2: Australian including original people and non Aboriginal people. But I
- 3:18Speaker 2: also want to talk about, you know, like what was
- 3:21Speaker 2: particularly with Tony and a Melander, about what it was
- 3:24Speaker 2: like in that room on that last day before they
- 3:27Speaker 2: came out in front of the press, you know, finalizing
- 3:29Speaker 2: them all those meetings, and there were so many people
- 3:32Speaker 2: that seemed to be involved with just what what was
- 3:35Speaker 2: it like? I mean, I'm sure we won't get you know,
- 3:38Speaker 2: a lot of their private stuff, but you know, the
- 3:41Speaker 2: feeling of that room and then fronting the media and
- 3:45Speaker 2: then having to then deal with the Federal Parliament about
- 3:50Speaker 2: the whole thing, you know. So, yeah, it's been interesting.
- 3:53Speaker 2: And also just the the stuff that's been happening in
- 3:56Speaker 2: the media, the pushback on that from the from the
- 3:59Speaker 2: Conservative you know, I'm interested to hear what they've got
- 4:02Speaker 2: to say about senators to center Price and her position
- 4:05Speaker 2: on it, yep. And what's his name Mundane, Lauren Mundane, yep,
- 4:12Speaker 2: you know, and it's but yeah, you know, so it's
- 4:16Speaker 2: going to be Ray will take questions from the audience,
- 4:19Speaker 2: but you know, just to start us off, that's what
- 4:21Speaker 2: we're going to get to and like what it will
- 4:22Speaker 2: mean eventually. So you know, it's such a simple question,
- 4:26Speaker 2: what does it mean in reality if this referendum gets up,
- 4:30Speaker 2: and like if it doesn't get up, then what I reckon?
- 4:33Speaker 1: They're really important discussions to have and and you know,
- 4:37Speaker 1: so important for Territorians to be involved in those discussions
- 4:40Speaker 1: as well. I mean, you know my background. I come
- 4:43Speaker 1: from a family where I've got plenty of Indigenous members
- 4:46Speaker 1: of my family. I'm very supportive of the voice, but
- 4:48Speaker 1: I know there's lots of people that are still going, oh,
- 4:51Speaker 1: I'm just not sure exactly how it's going to work
- 4:53Speaker 1: and whether it will make a difference and you know,
- 4:57Speaker 1: and truly help to bridge that gap that we still
- 5:00Speaker 1: seem to have. But I reckon you're the perfect person
- 5:02Speaker 1: to host it, Erschler, because there's plenty of people will
- 5:05Speaker 1: know you are also the Deputy Treaty Commissioner for the
- 5:08Speaker 1: Northern Territory.
- 5:10Speaker 2: Yeah, well past, yes, yes, that job finished now since
- 5:13Speaker 2: June last year, but yes, and so we I went
- 5:15Speaker 2: around with the Treaty Commissioners around the Northern Territory and
- 5:19Speaker 2: you know, talking to original tourists and other people on
- 5:21Speaker 2: the ground everywhere about what a treaty is and what
- 5:23Speaker 2: it would look like and what it would mean and
- 5:24Speaker 2: what people thought about it. So you know, we gave
- 5:27Speaker 2: the report right up the final important hand of that
- 5:29Speaker 2: to the Northern Territory government in June last year and
- 5:33Speaker 2: not sure what their plan is, but you know, for it.
- 5:37Speaker 2: But I don't see that things happened with that report
- 5:41Speaker 2: of any kind of you know, of any kind of significance.
- 5:44Speaker 2: So I'm not sure it's happening there. Yeah, Well would
- 5:47Speaker 2: be an opportunity lost given the work that we did, Yeah, a.
- 5:50Speaker 1: Huge volume of work and traveling right around the territory
- 5:53Speaker 1: as you touched on, you know, hearing from from territories
- 5:57Speaker 1: about the treaty and why it was important to Aboriginal
- 6:00Speaker 1: territorians and all territorians you know, And that I think
- 6:04Speaker 1: is something again even with the voice that people want
- 6:06Speaker 1: to be sure of, is that territorians, no matter where
- 6:09Speaker 1: you live, whether you're in a remote community or in
- 6:12Speaker 1: a you know, anywhere around the territory, that their voices
- 6:17Speaker 1: are heard.
- 6:19Speaker 2: Yeah, that's right. And the thing with this referendum, I
- 6:21Speaker 2: mean some of the pushback against is going to you know,
- 6:24Speaker 2: we're going to be a divided nation, you know, So
- 6:27Speaker 2: that's what it's going to. What's going to happen if
- 6:29Speaker 2: we say yes, but we I push back on that.
- 6:33Speaker 2: We are already a divided nation. We are already you know,
- 6:36Speaker 2: faced racism all across the country's sand grants just step
- 6:39Speaker 2: down from the ABC, you know on the racism that
- 6:42Speaker 2: he's been exposed to. And you know, not just Aberaginal
- 6:45Speaker 2: people get racism. You know a lot of people do.
- 6:48Speaker 2: There's racism right across the community for whatever reason. So
- 6:52Speaker 2: we are already divided on the Aboriginal torture on the
- 6:54Speaker 2: position and you know the rest of Australia. So this
- 6:58Speaker 2: will mean that the part and the executive Government will
- 7:01Speaker 2: have to consider any advice that the average on Tarita
- 7:06Speaker 2: on the people give to them that it's not binding.
- 7:09Speaker 2: The advice is not binding. They do not have to
- 7:11Speaker 2: accept that advice, but they need to be able to
- 7:14Speaker 2: have you know, another story as we're not just taking
- 7:17Speaker 2: it from bureaucrats or you know, their members that kind
- 7:20Speaker 2: of thing. So I think it's really important and really
- 7:24Speaker 2: no one is going to lose anything. You're not going
- 7:25Speaker 2: to lose your vote, You're not gonna lose your house,
- 7:27Speaker 2: you're not gonna lose your back out, You're not going
- 7:28Speaker 2: to lose a thing at all.
- 7:32Speaker 1: Urchla, I reckon, it's going to be a great panel
- 7:34Speaker 1: on the weekend. How can people Is this one free
- 7:37Speaker 1: or can anybody attend?
- 7:40Speaker 2: It's free? I'm pretty sure it's free and anyone can attend.
- 7:43Speaker 2: I mean that's a lot, you know, you know, book
- 7:45Speaker 2: tickets just to make sure there's enough space just at
- 7:48Speaker 2: the Dynast payment center there box office. But it's free.
- 7:52Speaker 2: I don't know as it's going to be. I know
- 7:55Speaker 2: that Tiva are going to come along and recorded live, yeah,
- 8:01Speaker 2: but otherwise I don't know what other yeah, what other
- 8:06Speaker 2: networks are doing in fact, so yeah.
- 8:09Speaker 1: I'm just having a look on the on the website now,
- 8:12Speaker 1: on the Entertainment Center website. Now you spot on. It's free,
- 8:15Speaker 1: but you do need to make sure that your register.
- 8:17Speaker 1: I'd encourage people to get along, particularly you know, if
- 8:20Speaker 1: you do want to know more about the voice and
- 8:22Speaker 1: and and hear from those fantastic panelists and yourself. It'll
- 8:27Speaker 1: be a great discussion and well worth attending.
- 8:31Speaker 2: Yeah, that's right, Katie. And it's not going to be
- 8:32Speaker 2: a radical discussion at all. I mean, you know, they're
- 8:34Speaker 2: not radical, you know, like yeah, and you're not a
- 8:36Speaker 2: radical if you're setting up for you human rights in
- 8:38Speaker 2: any sense of the word. But you know, so these
- 8:40Speaker 2: are very considered, very clever people who you know, who
- 8:45Speaker 2: know their stuff, and it's going to be an information
- 8:48Speaker 2: sharing exercise as well. So we hope to have Pat Anderson,
- 8:52Speaker 2: but she's had to withdraw because she's clashed with another
- 8:56Speaker 2: meaning at LaRue funnily enough, and she's from Dale, but yeah,
- 9:01Speaker 2: unfortunately not but yeah, look love, there's many people to
- 9:04Speaker 2: come along and there will be a Q and a
- 9:06Speaker 2: session at the end of it.
- 9:07Speaker 1: Oh good stuff. Well, Urschla, I always love a chat
- 9:10Speaker 1: with you. Thank you very much for coming on the.
- 9:13Speaker 2: Show this morning. It sounds like a plan.
- 9:18Speaker 1: Good on your thank you
