Transcript
- 0:00Hello and welcome back to another wonderful edition of
- 0:03ITAB podcast live from the ITAB stand.
- 0:07I'm joined by friend, fellow Co host.
- 0:11Got more? Important, yeah.
- 0:12For global travel, but more importantly, just kicked off the
- 0:16speakers corner session. The talk was packed with so many
- 0:20interesting insight and obviously as someone who loves
- 0:23content and loves to listen to the future of retail, rather
- 0:26than me taking in that direction, I just want to for
- 0:28you of all all the information that you were presenting, what
- 0:31was the take away? You know, I mean, ultimately
- 0:34right now in the United States it it's really AK shaped
- 0:38environment, right. So you're having 10% of the top
- 0:42decile of earners in the US representing 50% of the spent.
- 0:48So that's really that top line and it's increasing.
- 0:51It's more and more. I mean, a few months ago it was
- 0:5410% was maybe 40%. So that number is growing and
- 0:57growing. Well, kind of the bottom line,
- 0:59the shape of the OK, that percent of the total spend for
- 1:04GDP is going down. So the bottoms getting squeezed,
- 1:07the top is growing. So it's kind of a good news, bad
- 1:11news situation. You know, we're we're just
- 1:14starting to kind of feel some of the inflationary factors happen.
- 1:18Core goods costs had been really flat now in February of 2026 are
- 1:24starting to feel that a bit in the US.
- 1:26So I think that's one of the main takeaways.
- 1:28The other is that at the end, at the end of the day, no matter
- 1:31what it is, if it's COVID happening in 2020, hard to
- 1:35believe that was so long ago or some other, you know,
- 1:39geopolitical. Retail is resilient.
- 1:42It continues to be resilient. And what's helpful and what
- 1:46helps retail continue to be resilient is that the consumer
- 1:49and the customer has been resilient.
- 1:51People continue to need goods and services, right?
- 1:54You know, they might trade down, they might buy less.
- 1:57But at the end of the day, retail will continue.
- 2:00And the struggle that a lot of our members have is really just
- 2:04finding out what the customers want and meeting them there.
- 2:07So it just changes year over year what, what the challenge
- 2:12is. But retail is always a little
- 2:14challenging. So at the end of the day, it's
- 2:16just a different challenge. So I, I feel good about the
- 2:19outlook for 2026. I don't think it will be a flat
- 2:22year. I think there'll still be
- 2:23growth, you know, upwards of 2%. So hopefully that will continue
- 2:28into 2026 and people will start to feel a little bit of that,
- 2:32you know, that Divergent maybe come back together.
- 2:35And and your forecast for 20/25 was 3.8%.
- 2:40We did. I think it was 3 point.
- 2:41What did we say 3 point 7 was the high we actually exceeded
- 2:45that at 3.9%. It was the first holiday season
- 2:49in U.S. history that hit a trillion dollars trillion with
- 2:53AT like hard to imagine those numbers.
- 2:55You know you hear the billions and the 1,000,000 but Sutter a
- 2:58trillion to me billion used to seem big now trillion seems even
- 3:02larger. So to hit a trillion dollars
- 3:04just in retail spend in November and December, that was the
- 3:08increase of just shy of 4%. That's.
- 3:10Fantastic. I'm going to ask you to take
- 3:13your mind back now to that show that happened in January, that
- 3:18tiny one in New York. What was for you after that
- 3:23show? Because I don't think we've had
- 3:23a proper debrief. But in terms of when you think
- 3:26about the CEOs that you meet and you meet a tonne of the, what do
- 3:30you feel they came away with from that show?
- 3:32What was the essence? What was the feeling that they
- 3:34came away with? That's a great question.
- 3:36And you know, the good news is we had a tonne of positive
- 3:39feedback. It was the energy was there.
- 3:41The, you know, all the people, the right people were there, the
- 3:44right partners were there. The content was great.
- 3:46Thanks to my team. You know, ultimately most of the
- 3:50CE OS and the senior executives we've talked to, again,
- 3:53resilience is kind of the mantra for the year.
- 3:56Continuing that from last year, they're all looking towards what
- 4:01can help them from a cost savings perspective as well as
- 4:05saving a margin, right? So it's not only about top line,
- 4:08it's always about kind of that bottom line.
- 4:10So what can do that? AI can do a lot of that, both
- 4:14internally from a cost, you know, efficiency perspective,
- 4:18but also potentially in reducing some of the spend you have to do
- 4:22from creative costs, you know, rerouting packages, a ship from
- 4:27the store, you don't have to ship it to ADC.
- 4:30Maybe it just comes direct from the store and you save that one
- 4:33extra shipping cost. So there's a lot of these
- 4:35automation tools that take a minute to learn right there.
- 4:38It's not all set it and forget it, but you're able to advance
- 4:42the success and that margin piece a bit more than you have
- 4:46been. So a lot of retailers think
- 4:49they're behind. I am here to say retailers, you
- 4:52are not behind. Everyone is thinking that.
- 4:54So what that means is everybody is excited to try something.
- 4:59It's about dipping your toe in, starting small.
- 5:02Do not give the business to an agentic agent yet.
- 5:05Do not, do not feed it everything.
- 5:08But it's just like with personalization and all of the
- 5:11AB testing and the multivariate testing we did, you know, years,
- 5:14decades ago now on websites, it's testing into it, seeing
- 5:18what's working, but having the KPI's to know whether it's
- 5:22working. That at the end of the day, if
- 5:24you just feed everything into a system, apples to apples, you
- 5:27don't have that measurement anymore.
- 5:28You need that measurement. You need the kind of the
- 5:31baseline to know what, what you're improving upon and then
- 5:35reiterating. And you know the other thing
- 5:38that a lot of the CE OS and senior execs are asking where
- 5:43does AI sit? Where does AI live in the
- 5:45company? And I've heard honestly almost
- 5:48every department now, I've heard HR, I've heard legal, I've heard
- 5:52technology, I've heard it's independent, trying to think of
- 5:56a group that doesn't live in. And honestly, I don't think
- 5:58that's. Doesn't exist.
- 5:59Yeah, I. Know I understand you know every
- 6:01group can learn something from having more productive well,
- 6:05not. Exploring good, say experiment,
- 6:07right? Yeah, I mean.
- 6:09Experiment, yeah. Experiment.
- 6:11What was really interesting for me is store formats in the US.
- 6:15People seem to I don't want to shy away from the fact that loss
- 6:19is still a massive, massive issue, right?
- 6:22So looking at loss prevention as an area I don't think and we can
- 6:26undermine the the impact it has on margin, right and and how
- 6:29it's draining margin, which then breeds this sort of well, OK,
- 6:34maybe we need to look at new loss preventative solutions, but
- 6:37probably store formats as well. Yeah.
- 6:39I mean, mitigating the fraud in store is a huge piece, Yeah.
- 6:43And is the answer locking up goods, I don't think.
- 6:46NRF protects and and you have a focus on that.
- 6:49We do. And yeah, I mean, we're trying
- 6:51to get a, a organised retail crime bill passed through the
- 6:54Senate, Corka. And it is, I mean, truly you
- 6:57cannot. Not only is it a margin hit at
- 7:00the end of the day, it also is an employee morale hit.
- 7:03They see 100%. See the goods being taken out of
- 7:07the store and just walked out and they they.
- 7:09Can't. Well, they can't.
- 7:10I mean, legally it's like let them go and security deal with
- 7:13it, but you can't do it. Yeah.
- 7:15And. You know, from a danger
- 7:16perspective and all of that, being a frontline of retail is
- 7:20unfortunately increasingly more vulnerable than it has been.
- 7:24And ultimately, if you don't have kind of the back end
- 7:28repercussions and laws that protect retailers, I don't know
- 7:31how it gets better. You know, there's a lot of ways
- 7:34to kind of have formats and have maybe mitigated risk, right?
- 7:37You look at some of the stores like Sephora or Ulta and there's
- 7:41a tester or one or two that you can take for the, you know, the
- 7:45colour you're looking at, but ultimately the big pile of
- 7:48goods, it's not sitting right there on the shuttle, right.
- 7:51So maybe mitigating some of the risk.
- 7:53And also at the cash wrap, what are the frauds?
- 7:55You know, the hard declines, the soft declines, asking for Ida
- 7:59lot of that. It might take a minute or two
- 8:01more to restock or to train the employee to ask for the ID.
- 8:05However, I mean, at the end of the day, it is about margin.
- 8:08So there there are a lot of retailers who played with that,
- 8:11but ultimately it will impact some retailers more than others.
- 8:15No one's walking out with a refrigerator operator in Best
- 8:17Buy, right? So.
- 8:18You know. On a on a Dolly.
- 8:21But again, the fraud can happen all different places.
- 8:25It can happen online, you know, some, you know, there's
- 8:29obviously a lot of cyber and a lot of reputational damage that
- 8:32can happen. So all of that and of course AI
- 8:36can help with a lot of that, but it's not a silver bullet for
- 8:39anything. So store format is absolutely,
- 8:43you know, gone are the days of, you know, the piles of 600
- 8:47T-shirts and that doesn't make sense anymore.
- 8:50Nor is it efficient for the retail staff to only be folding
- 8:54shirts when they can pick and pack orders in the back as well.
- 8:56Yeah, there was a fantastic talk where there was talk and I
- 8:59forget. Obviously it was at a NRF show,
- 9:01no? No, it was at an NRF show.
- 9:03I was thinking of the name of the retailer, but there's
- 9:05basically A1 skew retailer where you go.
- 9:07It was like born Bonobos that Walmart bore where you would go
- 9:11in, get fitted and then every single time you get they have
- 9:15your size, you just go to get the style right.
- 9:18What does it speak to you? And there was a ladies fashion
- 9:21brand that's bringing that back to act.
- 9:22So for me, I love the fact that the industry is still there's
- 9:26this new entrant of format changing, format challenging.
- 9:30Innovating and the experience. Yeah, they even.
- 9:33Feel like you're being styled. I'm in a dressing room.
- 9:36Someone is bringing me my size. I don't have to shop and carry
- 9:39and hang and manage my bags. I mean, it does.
- 9:42It could also elevate the experience while protecting
- 9:44margin, and that's a win. Right.
- 9:46Yeah, it's so, it's so funny. I mean, I know we're on the ITAB
- 9:49stands and and. It's all stands.
- 9:51Yeah, it's. Incredible.
- 9:52But it's so funny because I was talking to the designers
- 9:54yesterday in luxury fashion and I was, I was just trying to get
- 9:58out of them like what's the future, right?
- 10:01What are the colour tones of the future?
- 10:02What are the palettes of the future?
- 10:04And we're not going to talk about that, but.
- 10:06We need to bring colour back. Yeah, but that was the thing.
- 10:09Like everyone's in black and blue, but it just felt the store
- 10:11format. Yeah, it feels that people are
- 10:13not afraid to experiment with it and, and and I guess.
- 10:17It's the same. I don't know if it's like this
- 10:18sort of inner youth in me that says AI and and all that stuff
- 10:22is great for the the older generation.
- 10:24We still want to go into stores. We still want to see
- 10:26interesting. Format and.
- 10:28Experiment and experiment. Yeah, because who wants to buy
- 10:30something if you don't have any connection to it?
- 10:32And sometimes the connection is physical and visual, right?
- 10:35Yeah, you know. Fantastic.
- 10:36You've been here for a couple of days.
- 10:37I know you've done a tour of Europe.
- 10:40Tour of Germany, yeah. Germany, sorry, not Europe
- 10:43Germany. What are you going to go back
- 10:44home and what's the any things that you stand up moments for
- 10:47you. I know you'll be in Paris and I
- 10:48know you've been to Singapore, but from this specific.
- 10:50Trip from this perspective, this trip, you know, at the end of
- 10:53the day, I think all retail on some level is global because
- 10:57it's it's emotional. Yeah.
- 10:59You're hard pressed to find someone in retail or shopping in
- 11:02retail who doesn't have an emotional connection on some
- 11:04levels to brands, right. So I think that is global what I
- 11:09haven't seen and much and it's so it's been Berlin, Cologne and
- 11:14Dusseldorf so far on the on the German NRF tour this this week
- 11:18with my colleague. What I haven't seen a lot of is
- 11:22the stores that are, you know, we've been mostly in urban
- 11:25environments, the giant footprint stores, the the, the
- 11:30clubs or, you know, obviously the kind of the Costco's or the
- 11:33B JS. I haven't seen those certainly
- 11:35in an urban environment and that makes sense.
- 11:37But even the grocery stores, people here tend to do their
- 11:41shopping day of or maybe for two days.
- 11:43They don't have the huge urban refrigerators that can soar a
- 11:48week's worth of blood. So everything is a little bit
- 11:51more localised. Everything's a little bit more
- 11:53by that. Point you.
- 11:54Feel that I too, I feel that you walk into a little or an ALDI
- 11:58here and. And.
- 12:02It just feels a slightly different than AUS store and
- 12:07actually, and it does feel a lot fresher.
- 12:09I will say the food is amazing. Every croissant and I know we're
- 12:12not in brands. I'm fully aware like Dang it, if
- 12:15they still aren't so good. You just the ingredients feel
- 12:19fresher. The the time from you know, farm
- 12:22to store is farm to fork is much less than it is in the US.
- 12:27So that piece absolutely the US can learn from.
- 12:32But what's, what's really interesting here is the, I will
- 12:35say all of the store associates, we don't have this in the US,
- 12:38but all the store associates also speak English.
- 12:41And I asked who do you speak English?
- 12:43Do you speak, you know, and it's really interesting when you go
- 12:46as a kind of you want to be a global shopper and it can be and
- 12:49they can still help you and your native language.
- 12:51That connection. You feel a connection and you
- 12:54feel a kinship. Yeah, sure.
- 12:57And now I'm going to go home and tell everyone about it.
- 12:59It's been a been a wonderful, pleasant surprise.
- 13:02Jill, thank you so much, Vinnie. Pleasure.
- 13:05So much fun, thanks. Thanks for having me and thank
- 13:07you to ITAP for making this all possible.
