Transcript
- 0:16Speaker 1: Welcome to jags Am as all of us.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Are getting into the preseason here. As you can see,
- 0:21Speaker 2: we're back out on the practice field. You can hear
- 0:22Speaker 2: it too as we get ready for another week of
- 0:25Speaker 2: training camp. But now we have a preseason game to
- 0:27Speaker 2: talk about because the Saints and the Jags played in
- 0:30Speaker 2: the Superdome. They also to joint practice in New Orleans
- 0:32Speaker 2: last week that we're going to recap for you as well.
- 0:34Speaker 2: Welcome back into jag Zam. I'm Kaanni Stevens. We're in
- 0:37Speaker 2: the outdoor version of the Hundai Studios, Brian Sex and
- 0:39Speaker 2: John Osier with me, and we got to see a
- 0:42Speaker 2: little bit of football, if we want to call preseason
- 0:44Speaker 2: football that, but we also got to see some good
- 0:47Speaker 2: action in joint training camp.
- 0:48Speaker 3: It was fun, right, I mean I told everybody that
- 0:50Speaker 3: I talked to yesterday that it's preseason football, and it's
- 0:54Speaker 3: tough to say it was great because people don't like
- 0:58Speaker 3: preseason football. But the game from twenty to six at
- 1:02Speaker 3: the half to twenty four to twenty, it was fun.
- 1:05Speaker 3: It was fun. The way that it ended. It was fun.
- 1:06Speaker 3: The way that Liam Colinch running down the sideline trying
- 1:08Speaker 3: to get the time out and thenning immediately. I mean
- 1:10Speaker 3: just put one hand up when he saw I ha,
- 1:11Speaker 3: I don't want that after all. So it was fun
- 1:14Speaker 3: and football is fun. It's great to be back.
- 1:16Speaker 4: Yeah, and he has the right perspective on preseason, meaning, hey,
- 1:22Speaker 4: I try to get the time out. We got the win.
- 1:25Speaker 4: It's fine whenever we move on. I actually got a
- 1:27Speaker 4: question in the ozone. I guess it was yesterday, John,
- 1:33Speaker 4: I just have to believe that the mistakes will get
- 1:35Speaker 4: ironed out. Well, yeah, here's why backups are backups because
- 1:43Speaker 4: they're not as good as the starters, so it will
- 1:45Speaker 4: look better when the starters are back out there. Don't
- 1:47Speaker 4: panic over the regular season about what went on on Saturday.
- 1:52Speaker 4: And no matter how many times and years we say that,
- 1:54Speaker 4: you still get people panicking.
- 1:57Speaker 5: I got an email during the game reality check.
- 2:00Speaker 3: No, it's not it's not to play off of that.
- 2:02Speaker 5: I had.
- 2:02Speaker 3: Someone asked me yesterday, what do you what did you think?
- 2:06Speaker 3: What am I supposed to do?
- 2:07Speaker 5: I thought it's time to go home.
- 2:08Speaker 3: I mean, what do you how do you evaluate the team?
- 2:12Speaker 3: You know, big picture? Based on that little picture of
- 2:16Speaker 3: backups and guys who were fighting for jobs. I said,
- 2:19Speaker 3: did you have fun. Did you enjoyed? He goes, yeah.
- 2:20Speaker 3: I go, well, that's all you should need to know. Oh,
- 2:22Speaker 3: so here's what you look for.
- 2:24Speaker 4: You look for flashes of guys who look like, oh,
- 2:28Speaker 4: they're gonna be able to do this. And every time
- 2:30Speaker 4: I stay with people go well.
- 2:31Speaker 5: What about the best?
- 2:32Speaker 3: And what the best?
- 2:32Speaker 5: So they're gonna wa Yeah, they're not gonna have on
- 2:34Speaker 5: the team.
- 2:35Speaker 3: You can't evaluate it.
- 2:36Speaker 4: They're looking for things that will work. They're looking for growth. Uh,
- 2:40Speaker 4: so we'll get to that.
- 2:40Speaker 3: Preseasons different.
- 2:41Speaker 1: Well, let's go over our big things.
- 2:42Speaker 2: We touched on some of them already, but we had
- 2:44Speaker 2: to get off our chest. You know, big things brought
- 2:46Speaker 2: to you by g e h A Government Employees Health Association.
- 2:49Speaker 1: Big thing number one is a slow start. We talked
- 2:51Speaker 1: about it. First play of the game. Didn't look good.
- 2:53Speaker 2: They were able to rebound in the second half. But Brian,
- 2:56Speaker 2: when you start a little bit slow, I have to
- 2:58Speaker 2: imagine he thought was gonna be a little upset with
- 3:00Speaker 2: how the special teams left out of the game.
- 3:01Speaker 3: Absolutely, but listen, it's hard enough during the course of
- 3:05Speaker 3: a season to plug a guy in here or there.
- 3:07Speaker 3: It disrupts the chemistry the rhythm of special teams. Now
- 3:11Speaker 3: you know you're putting groups of guys together based on
- 3:13Speaker 3: the fact that some guys are gonna start, some guys
- 3:15Speaker 3: are gonna play more snaps. You're mixing and matching more
- 3:18Speaker 3: than ever, and it was ugly. I remember a game
- 3:21Speaker 3: Jaguars win in two thousand and seven to Houston and
- 3:23Speaker 3: they sat everybody. That was the end of the regular season,
- 3:26Speaker 3: John and they gave up two kickoff returns for touchdowns
- 3:30Speaker 3: in that game because they played all the backups.
- 3:32Speaker 5: So it takes this one guy return.
- 3:34Speaker 3: So I wasn't I wasn't surprised by it. I will
- 3:36Speaker 3: say this, the slow start was the theme of last
- 3:40Speaker 3: week because they got off to a slow start on
- 3:42Speaker 3: the practice field and had to sort of build to
- 3:44Speaker 3: any sort of positive ending that day. And they had
- 3:48Speaker 3: that in New Orleans preseason opener. I guess I'll talk
- 3:51Speaker 3: it off to that. The Jaguars are expecting a response,
- 3:54Speaker 3: a better response from their team.
- 3:56Speaker 4: This week, and I have no doubt they will hearken
- 3:59Speaker 4: Backken's an old word. Remember this time last year we
- 4:04Speaker 4: were talking about the defense not being able to get
- 4:06Speaker 4: lined up against Pittsburgh. Remember that theme was the defense Okay.
- 4:11Speaker 1: We did I They got a couple of takeaways as well.
- 4:14Speaker 4: So this is this is preseason and we are watching
- 4:19Speaker 4: a televised practice in uniforms, and there's going to be
- 4:23Speaker 4: mistakes in the first game. Uh So, look they were
- 4:27Speaker 4: thirteen and four last here they get the same people
- 4:29Speaker 4: coming back. This is a good bunch. They're gonna be fine.
- 4:35Speaker 1: Let's go to our big thing Number two, which is
- 4:36Speaker 1: O line.
- 4:37Speaker 2: We've talked to you about some of the O line
- 4:38Speaker 2: injuries and while they're not long term, they added another
- 4:41Speaker 2: injured player to that list, Chumtygoga, who left the game
- 4:44Speaker 2: against the Saints with another injury. We'll get you an
- 4:46Speaker 2: update on that as soon as we have it. But
- 4:48Speaker 2: Liam Cohen talked a little bit about the need to
- 4:50Speaker 2: battle through and get something out of these practices, even
- 4:52Speaker 2: with injuries.
- 4:54Speaker 6: Two weeks of good work, that we need to take
- 4:57Speaker 6: a step in the right direction both physically conditioning. We
- 5:01Speaker 6: have to practice like we're we're gonna go pads a
- 5:04Speaker 6: few times this week. We got the joint. We got
- 5:07Speaker 6: the two joints against Tampa. So this is the time
- 5:10Speaker 6: in training camp that these things sometimes pile up. We're
- 5:13Speaker 6: just unfortunately it's out of position in which it's hard
- 5:18Speaker 6: to function when you have depth issues and injuries.
- 5:21Speaker 2: So it did look like they were having trouble functioning
- 5:25Speaker 2: at times on the offensive line. John and I know
- 5:27Speaker 2: this isn't a lot of long term stuff, but right
- 5:29Speaker 2: now it's kind of ugly.
- 5:30Speaker 4: No. I think that was probably the one of the
- 5:35Speaker 4: truths that came out of the other day is they
- 5:39Speaker 4: need to practice. They have planned their preparation for week
- 5:45Speaker 4: one with having good work in the next two weeks.
- 5:49Speaker 4: We talked about it all off season. Liam is big
- 5:52Speaker 4: on these joint practices. There's three over the next two weeks.
- 5:55Speaker 4: They're here. This is sort of where he wants to
- 5:59Speaker 4: make Hay in terms of preparation, and that is a
- 6:02Speaker 4: real thing.
- 6:04Speaker 5: The offensive line.
- 6:05Speaker 4: My understanding is they feel fine about Week one, but
- 6:09Speaker 4: getting lined up and getting the work and getting the
- 6:12Speaker 4: run game work and getting all the all the tough
- 6:14Speaker 4: stuff Brian that they need to get done done needs
- 6:17Speaker 4: to happen. And I don't think I'm not saying they
- 6:21Speaker 4: can't do it, but it's going to be trickier than
- 6:24Speaker 4: they wanted.
- 6:25Speaker 3: Not everybody feels fine about the way that the offensive
- 6:28Speaker 3: line practiced last week on Thursday or played on Saturday.
- 6:33Speaker 3: If you think about it like a stop sign, I
- 6:35Speaker 3: was not was a green light with this offensive line
- 6:37Speaker 3: through training camp. I wasn't worried about the injuries because
- 6:39Speaker 3: you know, Walker Little's going to be back. That didn't
- 6:42Speaker 3: affect me that much. I'm a flashing yellow right now, like, hey,
- 6:45Speaker 3: we got to see some improvement the left side in particular.
- 6:48Speaker 3: We've been talking about Anton Harrison and we've taken for
- 6:50Speaker 3: granted that Ezra Cleveland, who played so well last year,
- 6:53Speaker 3: you know you're going to be good there. Well, they
- 6:56Speaker 3: weren't good in New Orleans. They weren't good at all.
- 6:59Speaker 3: They've got to bond. They need to see something from
- 7:02Speaker 3: the left side. The whole offensive line's got to play well,
- 7:05Speaker 3: as John alluded to, but those two guys in particular
- 7:08Speaker 3: need to have a good week because if you're going
- 7:11Speaker 3: to be the offense that they know they can be,
- 7:14Speaker 3: the blind side of the quarterback has to be strong.
- 7:16Speaker 3: It was not in New Orleans. It's got to be better.
- 7:19Speaker 1: It's just difficult to see much out of them as well.
- 7:21Speaker 2: And when we talk about even in the game, I
- 7:22Speaker 2: know you're down to second third, fourth string at that point,
- 7:25Speaker 2: but it's hard to even put anything together, and that's
- 7:27Speaker 2: why the offense looked so tough to watch at times
- 7:29Speaker 2: during that game. Our final big thing is going to
- 7:31Speaker 2: be back at it because as mentioned, they're right back
- 7:34Speaker 2: at practice today and also they have a joint practice
- 7:36Speaker 2: with Carolina coming up on Wednesday. So, Brian, we saw
- 7:40Speaker 2: a lot of good work in New Orleans against the
- 7:43Speaker 2: Saints and Liam cohen longest practice so far of the
- 7:46Speaker 2: season is one of the hottest practices. And you know,
- 7:49Speaker 2: you can say they won or lost, but more than anything,
- 7:50Speaker 2: they got something out of it and they're hoping to
- 7:53Speaker 2: improve upon that when Carolina gets to town.
- 7:55Speaker 3: So I spent some time with Liam in our production meetings.
- 7:57Speaker 3: You were there last What they was saying Friday, you
- 8:01Speaker 3: lose track of it. There's two things he wants to
- 8:03Speaker 3: see John from his team when the Panthers get here.
- 8:06Speaker 3: He wants to see There's more than two, but two
- 8:08Speaker 3: in particular. He wants to see a fundamentally sound team,
- 8:11Speaker 3: and he wants to see a team that is tough, right,
- 8:15Speaker 3: you know, fundamentally sound, attacking, situational masters, tough. He wants
- 8:19Speaker 3: to see the beginning and end of those two things
- 8:21Speaker 3: because at the substance of who this team is supposed
- 8:24Speaker 3: to be, they are a fundamentally sound team that is tough.
- 8:27Speaker 3: It doesn't matter whether it's hot or whether it's cold,
- 8:29Speaker 3: if it's going well or if it's not going well.
- 8:32Speaker 3: He wants to see this team be tough. They'll have
- 8:35Speaker 3: a chance, especially on the offensive line against a very
- 8:38Speaker 3: good defensive front Derek Brown, who is an All World
- 8:42Speaker 3: defensive tackle for Carolina's coming in here. Let's see how
- 8:45Speaker 3: the interior prepares for their opportunity to stop that group.
- 8:48Speaker 4: Yeah, bear in mind when I say not to worry
- 8:51Speaker 4: about the preseason and what we saw in the offensive line,
- 8:55Speaker 4: it means I have great faith based on what we
- 8:58Speaker 4: saw last year that when they see a thing it's
- 9:01Speaker 4: not to their liking, they're going to fix that. And
- 9:04Speaker 4: that's what they did with defense last year. They did
- 9:06Speaker 4: with many many things last year. So that's why I
- 9:08Speaker 4: say not to panic. They clearly still need to see
- 9:10Speaker 4: it and it's a fantastic opportunity. I don't worry about
- 9:17Speaker 4: seeing this team be tough when they emphasize being tough,
- 9:21Speaker 4: because I thought that was their theme last year. But
- 9:25Speaker 4: me not worrying about it doesn't mean we still don't
- 9:27Speaker 4: need to see it.
- 9:28Speaker 1: It's sorry, no, it's me for good. Doesn't make it happen.
- 9:34Speaker 2: But you know, Liam Cohen will get them back whipped
- 9:36Speaker 2: into shape, and Coach Camp will as well. Stay with
- 9:39Speaker 2: here on jag Zam, We're going to look at some
- 9:40Speaker 2: of the clips from the first preseason game after the break.
- 9:52Speaker 6: Football gods, you know, working in your favor, I guess
- 9:56Speaker 6: in those situations, but you know, it's just kind of
- 10:00Speaker 6: wild the way the game, the game goes when you.
- 10:03Speaker 1: Get the win.
- 10:04Speaker 2: Coach smiles through it, although I have to imagine if
- 10:06Speaker 2: he didn't get the time out and it didn't go
- 10:08Speaker 2: the way he wanted.
- 10:09Speaker 1: He would not be smiling as much as he was
- 10:11Speaker 1: after that.
- 10:11Speaker 2: I know it's pre season, but Liam takes a lot
- 10:14Speaker 2: of stuff seriously. So let's go over some of the
- 10:16Speaker 2: some of the highlights, some of the memorable moments. At
- 10:18Speaker 2: least we talked about that Saints kick return right off
- 10:20Speaker 2: the top. Not the way you want to line up
- 10:23Speaker 2: on special teams necessarily, but I'm gonna go silver silver,
- 10:26Speaker 2: silver lining on this. Jalen Husky rookie coming out of
- 10:29Speaker 2: nowhere to save that play, because it was very easily
- 10:31Speaker 2: could have been a kick return for a touchdown, and
- 10:33Speaker 2: he came out of nowhere to get the tackle to
- 10:35Speaker 2: save it. And there was a couple plays from Jalen
- 10:37Speaker 2: Husky in that game where he looked impressive.
- 10:39Speaker 3: Listen, you practice how you play, or you play how
- 10:42Speaker 3: you practice. We've been talking about twenty two. He's splashed
- 10:46Speaker 3: all summer long, so I wasn't surprised. I was surprised
- 10:49Speaker 3: that he caught him here, but I wasn't surprised he
- 10:51Speaker 3: was number twenty two who made that catch, because he
- 10:54Speaker 3: has had a great summer.
- 10:56Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 10:56Speaker 4: To me, he's what you want out of his safety.
- 10:58Speaker 4: He's uh, he's a football player, and he makes plays
- 11:04Speaker 4: and he reacts to situations.
- 11:07Speaker 5: Well. I think he's be pretty good.
- 11:09Speaker 2: And he's one of those players where when you talk
- 11:10Speaker 2: about not necessarily old school in this sense, like as
- 11:13Speaker 2: hard hitting, but he he was not gonna let that
- 11:16Speaker 2: touchdown have it like maybe some people make business decisions,
- 11:19Speaker 2: but he was ready to go.
- 11:19Speaker 3: Listen. He had a run stop later in the ball
- 11:22Speaker 3: game where it was him one on one in the
- 11:24Speaker 3: hole and he came up and put the guy on
- 11:25Speaker 3: the ground for one hundred and ninety pounds safety against
- 11:28Speaker 3: a big running back. It was an impressive play.
- 11:30Speaker 2: He also had a play where he saved another touchdown
- 11:32Speaker 2: later in the game where he flew out of bounds
- 11:34Speaker 2: and kind of ran into some people on the sidelines.
- 11:36Speaker 1: So he's going for it for sure.
- 11:37Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 11:37Speaker 4: Tough guy too, because it looked on one play like
- 11:40Speaker 4: he got a little banged up in stayed ana. Yeah,
- 11:42Speaker 4: I probably wouldn't have had to.
- 11:44Speaker 2: Nick Mullins started the game. He's pretty much solidified the
- 11:48Speaker 2: backup quarterback position. We'll kind of talk about that a
- 11:50Speaker 2: little bit later in the show. But it's tough as
- 11:53Speaker 2: well because Chiu Minidoga went down early and then it
- 11:56Speaker 2: was hard to get the offense in any kind of rhythm.
- 11:59Speaker 1: It just felt very disjointed.
- 12:01Speaker 4: Well, not only did Chuma go out, their plan Liam
- 12:06Speaker 4: said after the game was immediately to get Monheim and mylom.
- 12:10Speaker 4: I asked him if it was because of a dooga,
- 12:12Speaker 4: if they were about injuries, and he said, now, we
- 12:13Speaker 4: were just really planning to get them out. They wanted
- 12:18Speaker 4: to make sure I think that their top guys were
- 12:21Speaker 4: ready to practice in these big situations. So you're playing
- 12:25Speaker 4: with the entire backup line, or maybe not even the
- 12:27Speaker 4: backup line. I mean the guys who again are gonna
- 12:31Speaker 4: be prictice squad guys are not here.
- 12:32Speaker 3: You know, there was a lot of chatter about, you know,
- 12:34Speaker 3: backup quarterback issues. I'll take you this. They value his knowledge,
- 12:39Speaker 3: Nick Mullen's knowledge of what this offense is. They also
- 12:43Speaker 3: value his preparation. So I don't get the sense that
- 12:45Speaker 3: the Jaguars are panicking like some folks might be about
- 12:48Speaker 3: the backup Ye.
- 12:48Speaker 5: I'd be surprised if they make a move there.
- 12:50Speaker 2: But let's talk a little bit about some of the flashes.
- 12:53Speaker 2: We saw some of the maybe starters or second team
- 12:57Speaker 2: people that we saw in the game. Bj Green Ruke
- 12:59Speaker 2: ro both contributing to the sack here, and we saw
- 13:03Speaker 2: them get some decent run along with Ventrel Miller and
- 13:05Speaker 2: Branson Combs, some guys that are going to be contributors
- 13:07Speaker 2: on defense. But they were out there a good chunk
- 13:09Speaker 2: of the game as well, and nice to see a.
- 13:11Speaker 1: Little bit of pressure there.
- 13:12Speaker 3: Yeah, and you see Branson Combs in that group as well.
- 13:15Speaker 3: He's a guy that James Gladystone said at the very
- 13:17Speaker 3: beginning of training camp, doesn't just have coverage skills. John
- 13:20Speaker 3: Witch is his strength, but he's got some pass rush
- 13:22Speaker 3: ability as well, and you see him there fighting between
- 13:25Speaker 3: a guard and to tackle. Again, these are a lot
- 13:27Speaker 3: of guys that we've watched so far through training camp
- 13:30Speaker 3: who have played consistent football that we're out there making
- 13:34Speaker 3: those plays at the super Dome.
- 13:35Speaker 4: Yeah, I think Combs and Ventrel that combination to me,
- 13:40Speaker 4: it was like it's gonna be fine over there. And
- 13:43Speaker 4: I do think it's significant that bj Green continues to
- 13:48Speaker 4: matter in things that we see. Is he going to
- 13:52Speaker 4: be the best third rusher in the league. You know,
- 13:55Speaker 4: I don't know where he's going to rank on that,
- 13:57Speaker 4: but I think he I think they're going to have
- 13:59Speaker 4: a better third rusher if it's him U and if
- 14:03Speaker 4: somebody beats him out for that role that I think
- 14:04Speaker 4: it'd be really good. So I think they're I think
- 14:07Speaker 4: they're emerging as okay there.
- 14:10Speaker 3: I was surprised. This tells you the impact that he had.
- 14:13Speaker 3: He only had one tackle, but it seemed like and
- 14:15Speaker 3: when I looked at the statue after the I'm an
- 14:17Speaker 3: expected sack strip, I mean just it felt like he
- 14:21Speaker 3: was making an impact and the statuet didn't necessarily back
- 14:24Speaker 3: that up, but the eye tested.
- 14:25Speaker 5: But he was pushing guys asu.
- 14:27Speaker 1: Yeah, he was expecting the game.
- 14:29Speaker 5: He has looked.
- 14:31Speaker 4: We always talk about young players in their first year
- 14:34Speaker 4: and then you wait for them, and a lot of
- 14:36Speaker 4: times the guys we talk about don't pan out.
- 14:38Speaker 5: He has looked like we thought he would last year.
- 14:41Speaker 2: Jump to the second half because it wasn't great in
- 14:43Speaker 2: the first half of the Jags. But how about this
- 14:45Speaker 2: Hunter Long touchdown and then a two point conversion. Grant
- 14:48Speaker 2: Dnsky was making the play, calls Brian and this one
- 14:51Speaker 2: was kind of nifty, you know, going right and then
- 14:53Speaker 2: coming back to the tight ends wide open touchdown.
- 14:55Speaker 3: Well, it's funny because Bucky and I were talking on
- 14:57Speaker 3: the broadcast that if Chris Rodriguez had been in the
- 15:00Speaker 3: this was an easy call.
- 15:01Speaker 5: You hand it to him.
- 15:03Speaker 3: And then Yudiski comes with this, and Bucky and I
- 15:05Speaker 3: were laughing afterwards. Hunter Long is another guy who he
- 15:08Speaker 3: seems like he's falling down the depth chart with the
- 15:11Speaker 3: addition of Borkatchier and Cozial, and yet he's really been
- 15:14Speaker 3: productive and had good practice sessions, and there he is
- 15:18Speaker 3: that capped off that drive Tui at the beginning of
- 15:22Speaker 3: the third quarter, and that's really what made it a
- 15:25Speaker 3: fun game in the second half, because the Jaguars responded
- 15:28Speaker 3: to the adversity of the first half with a really
- 15:31Speaker 3: good beginning of the third quarter.
- 15:33Speaker 4: Yeah, and you don't want to take too much from
- 15:35Speaker 4: the second half of the first preseason game and say
- 15:37Speaker 4: it's going to translate. But the fact that they came
- 15:40Speaker 4: out and said we're just gonna run, I think speaks
- 15:43Speaker 4: a little bit to what they want to be if
- 15:47Speaker 4: they get in trouble, if they get to where something's
- 15:50Speaker 4: not working, they want to be a team that can
- 15:52Speaker 4: go rely on that. So I think there was a
- 15:54Speaker 4: little wrinkle of what they want to be there.
- 15:56Speaker 2: Jamar Taylor got the other touchdown, and he had a
- 15:58Speaker 2: lot of the carries in the second half there, and
- 16:00Speaker 2: he looks like somebody obviously we've talked about in training
- 16:03Speaker 2: camp who has flashed and was great at the University
- 16:05Speaker 2: of Virginia, someone they probably would like to get on
- 16:07Speaker 2: the practice squad if possible.
- 16:08Speaker 4: John, Yeah, what you want these days when you sign
- 16:14Speaker 4: an undrafted running back, especially in their situation. They've got
- 16:17Speaker 4: backs that they like who are going to be on
- 16:20Speaker 4: the roster but you want to have a guy on
- 16:22Speaker 4: the practice squad who if you get in a vine
- 16:25Speaker 4: and all of a sudden, guys on the sideline that
- 16:28Speaker 4: you feel like, maybe they're not going to be as
- 16:30Speaker 4: dynamic in the passing game as those guys who are
- 16:33Speaker 4: on their roster, but you know you can turn around
- 16:36Speaker 4: and give them the ball and they can run for
- 16:37Speaker 4: two or three games for you.
- 16:39Speaker 5: He looks like.
- 16:40Speaker 4: That guy, and that can be an important pickup once
- 16:44Speaker 4: the season gets going and the realities of injuries hit.
- 16:47Speaker 5: Ryn.
- 16:47Speaker 3: You know that this roster is probably fifty or fifty
- 16:50Speaker 3: three complete, right, There's not many jobs that are open.
- 16:54Speaker 3: A guy like that just complicates You're a calculus because
- 16:58Speaker 3: and we've used him as an example before. They were
- 17:00Speaker 3: in twenty fourteen, Tyler Shatley, a long time contributor on
- 17:03Speaker 3: the offensive line here. They wanted to get him to
- 17:06Speaker 3: the practice squad, and kai the night that they were
- 17:08Speaker 3: making the cuts, they heard he was going to be signed.
- 17:11Speaker 3: So they kept him on the roster and he never left.
- 17:14Speaker 3: They've got a lot of production out of that running
- 17:16Speaker 3: back room. Taylor's a guy they absolutely want to keep. Quietly,
- 17:19Speaker 3: I hear that the Mirordula has had a tremendous training
- 17:22Speaker 3: cap and is a good play the other day, and
- 17:25Speaker 3: I think you can read into that. So they don't
- 17:27Speaker 3: want to give anyone any tape. He has been a
- 17:29Speaker 3: thing for all of the consternation about Travis etn leaving.
- 17:33Speaker 3: They are really comfortable with what they've got. More than comfortable.
- 17:36Speaker 3: They're not always a happy no coach, yeah, but they
- 17:41Speaker 3: feel good about where they're at.
- 17:43Speaker 4: But that's a second position now where I think they're
- 17:46Speaker 4: going to have to keep six Edges because they like
- 17:49Speaker 4: the four I'm not gonna name them all, but beyond
- 17:51Speaker 4: Trayvon and Josh, they like four guys there. Well that
- 17:54Speaker 4: six is a big number for Edge, but they like
- 17:56Speaker 4: him enough where they have to keep on the active roster.
- 17:59Speaker 4: Tomorio Taylor becomes another guy where it's like can we
- 18:01Speaker 4: get him to the practice squad? Oh, we got to
- 18:03Speaker 4: keep it. So we haven't had this conversation that much.
- 18:07Speaker 3: It's Strigo Green Williams. And then here's the name Brian
- 18:11Speaker 3: Thomas Junior, Brian with a Y from South Carolina. We'd
- 18:15Speaker 3: heard that he had impressed the coachers and then he
- 18:17Speaker 3: went out the other night.
- 18:18Speaker 5: Maybe you mentioned Durfy who also fall.
- 18:20Speaker 3: Without a doubt. I mean, there's lots of guys that
- 18:23Speaker 3: they have done a nice job of creating the competition
- 18:25Speaker 3: that they've talked about on this roster.
- 18:28Speaker 2: Let's do the final two plays of the game, because
- 18:29Speaker 2: I think this kind of sums up the night to
- 18:31Speaker 2: bar Mohammad, who played almost I want to say the
- 18:35Speaker 2: almost the entire game on defense. He was out there
- 18:37Speaker 2: for a significant amount of snaps, gets called for the
- 18:40Speaker 2: p I penalty on the second to last play, and
- 18:42Speaker 2: then obviously on the last play, was able to kind
- 18:47Speaker 2: of come up and keep the keep the win for
- 18:50Speaker 2: the Jags. But John, he's someone in training camp who
- 18:53Speaker 2: has looked really good but then got picked on a
- 18:55Speaker 2: little bit in a game. So is this one of
- 18:57Speaker 2: those things where maybe he flashes in training camp but
- 18:59Speaker 2: has translated to gameplay yet or am I reading too
- 19:02Speaker 2: much into it?
- 19:02Speaker 5: Well?
- 19:03Speaker 4: I think you saw this with terror Penya too young guys,
- 19:11Speaker 4: Remember we've seen him in practice. This is a lights
- 19:14Speaker 4: on situation that they haven't played in that much at
- 19:17Speaker 4: this level. Terror Penya has to drop, comes back and
- 19:20Speaker 4: makes a huge catch that says with the winning touchdown,
- 19:23Speaker 4: Muhammad wasn't you know? I thought he had some plays
- 19:26Speaker 4: and then he also got beat in a couple of plays,
- 19:28Speaker 4: comes back and makes a play. People are seeing in
- 19:33Speaker 4: real time growth. So I think you saw that out
- 19:36Speaker 4: of both guys, they love Mohammed are both of those
- 19:39Speaker 4: guys I just talked about.
- 19:40Speaker 5: Ready, Do you want them starting on week one? Probably not, But.
- 19:46Speaker 4: Preseason in training camp, especially for these young undrafted guys,
- 19:50Speaker 4: is about developing and seeing if you might have something
- 19:54Speaker 4: for him to come back and make a big play.
- 19:57Speaker 4: Both of those guys shows that they can repe on
- 20:00Speaker 4: to the moment, and.
- 20:01Speaker 3: That's the word, that's a huge thing. That's the word
- 20:03Speaker 3: thank you. These guys value these guys being Biselli Gladstone
- 20:07Speaker 3: and call him. They value a player who recognizes the moment,
- 20:12Speaker 3: situational awareness and then rises to the moment. So there
- 20:15Speaker 3: were mistakes along the course of the game by him,
- 20:19Speaker 3: but when the moment was the biggest, he came through
- 20:21Speaker 3: and that is something that they place a high priority on.
- 20:24Speaker 3: So they love him and he's going to be on
- 20:26Speaker 3: this football team.
- 20:27Speaker 4: Well, it also comes down to gut for a coach,
- 20:29Speaker 4: Liam or cam or you didn't see your sitting in
- 20:31Speaker 4: the sidelines. Injuries have happened you're in December. You turn
- 20:35Speaker 4: around all of a sudden and I'm throwing Muhammad in
- 20:38Speaker 4: the game. I'm throwing pain in the game. I seen
- 20:40Speaker 4: him do it once go in So the fact that
- 20:43Speaker 4: they've done it could make a difference in December at
- 20:46Speaker 4: some point.
- 20:47Speaker 5: Who knows.
- 20:47Speaker 2: It is the life of a dB as well. You
- 20:49Speaker 2: get beat, but you got to get back out there.
- 20:50Speaker 2: And he did that in the last play of the game.
- 20:52Speaker 2: So stay with us here coming up, were gonna do
- 20:54Speaker 2: some hot takes after break to jags Am brought to
- 21:01Speaker 2: you in part by ticket Master, the official ticket marketplace
- 21:04Speaker 2: of the Jacksonville Jaguars.
- 21:09Speaker 3: There are good.
- 21:10Speaker 7: Things like a sharpen because at the end of the day,
- 21:12Speaker 7: you're chasing greatness, you're chasing dominance. You know, every time
- 21:15Speaker 7: I came to the sideline, I would getting the pointers
- 21:17Speaker 7: on trade Josh, you can go out there and directed,
- 21:19Speaker 7: you know, make jac pressure.
- 21:21Speaker 5: So yeah, I'm look good.
- 21:23Speaker 7: It's a good step that's going here, but it's nowhere.
- 21:25Speaker 7: I'm not saying to you.
- 21:27Speaker 1: PJ.
- 21:27Speaker 2: Greenshown flashes not satisfied yet. Obviously, an undrafted free agent
- 21:31Speaker 2: last year makes the team, but he'll be back out
- 21:34Speaker 2: there again, it's good to see. Let's go over some
- 21:36Speaker 2: of our hot takes from either the game or joint
- 21:38Speaker 2: practice or just this point of training camp. Brian, what
- 21:41Speaker 2: is your hot take for us?
- 21:42Speaker 3: We as I alluded in the top of the show,
- 21:45Speaker 3: there's something to prove for these guys. Not all of them, well, yes,
- 21:49Speaker 3: all of them, because that's professional football. But there are
- 21:51Speaker 3: some players who are coming off of the New Orleans
- 21:54Speaker 3: practice session last Thursday. Let's put it this way, they're
- 21:57Speaker 3: looking for a response. That was the theme of HQ
- 22:00Speaker 3: last thursday with Boselli and Gladstone. They want to see
- 22:04Speaker 3: those guys both on the offensive line that we've talked about,
- 22:07Speaker 3: there were some guys on the defensive line and the
- 22:09Speaker 3: defense stopping the run. We're given up five and six
- 22:12Speaker 3: yards a clip. Can't have that. I mean, that puts
- 22:15Speaker 3: you in disadvantageous situations in terms of your defense. They
- 22:19Speaker 3: want to see some guys who didn't practice well last
- 22:22Speaker 3: week respond come out fundamentally sound tough. There's something for
- 22:27Speaker 3: guys to prove. There better be an edge, and Liam
- 22:29Speaker 3: Coman is always looking for an edge for his football team. Well,
- 22:33Speaker 3: he's got one based on the fact that they were
- 22:35Speaker 3: not happy that there was some dissatisfaction with last Thursday's practice.
- 22:39Speaker 4: Yeah, it's almost like people who observe this league have
- 22:43Speaker 4: to rethink how they think things. During the preseason. Everybody's
- 22:47Speaker 4: sort of panicky about the preseason game preseason games. But
- 22:50Speaker 4: you're right, the practices, especially these joint practices four or five,
- 22:55Speaker 4: are where these teams now, especially Liam really wants to
- 22:58Speaker 4: see progress, stoutness in the run game. They you know,
- 23:03Speaker 4: the physicality of things. You used to not really you know,
- 23:07Speaker 4: practice whatever. But now I think these two the one
- 23:11Speaker 4: practice this week and the two next week, Uh, they
- 23:14Speaker 4: are looking forward and I hope for their sake that
- 23:18Speaker 4: they have enough guys to practice well to get what
- 23:22Speaker 4: they want out of it.
- 23:23Speaker 3: There's a word that was used a couple of times
- 23:25Speaker 3: with me that I think is really important in this building,
- 23:27Speaker 3: and that is they want to trust you. They want
- 23:29Speaker 3: to know going into year two that there are guys
- 23:32Speaker 3: they absolutely can trust. You earn that trust on the
- 23:36Speaker 3: practice field, and they've got a couple of weeks before
- 23:38Speaker 3: the start of the season to build it up.
- 23:41Speaker 1: John, what's your hot take for us today?
- 23:42Speaker 4: Well, mine was on the defensive tackles, and you know,
- 23:47Speaker 4: all that kind of said. Rouquet, love hearing you say it,
- 23:52Speaker 4: and Albert Regis. I don't want to put too much
- 23:56Speaker 4: into these plays because it's a preseason game, minutes against
- 24:00Speaker 4: a second team.
- 24:01Speaker 5: Line, blah blah blah.
- 24:02Speaker 4: But if you're looking for things in a preseason game, Brian,
- 24:05Speaker 4: the fact that Regis makes this move and then is
- 24:08Speaker 4: athletic enough to corral the quarterback.
- 24:11Speaker 5: In the pocket.
- 24:12Speaker 4: There was some physical athleticism stuff there that's like, Okay,
- 24:16Speaker 4: well that's not something that we see. So you don't
- 24:20Speaker 4: need fifteen sacks from the interior, but you need some penetration,
- 24:24Speaker 4: you need some disruption, and I would say we saw
- 24:27Speaker 4: slivers of that where you said, Okay, that might be
- 24:31Speaker 4: a little step up from last year. They don't need
- 24:33Speaker 4: to improve dramatically from last year. They're thirteen and four.
- 24:35Speaker 4: You need little things, a little bit more on the
- 24:38Speaker 4: defensive interior if you're if you can get a little
- 24:41Speaker 4: bit of something out of these guys. It's hard to
- 24:44Speaker 4: have a preseason hot take, but I think that could
- 24:47Speaker 4: be a at least a warm take.
- 24:48Speaker 3: Oh it is, and let me bookend it. Eric Armstead,
- 24:51Speaker 3: I think we all would.
- 24:52Speaker 2: Say that would be the hot part of the take
- 24:53Speaker 2: is he's had probably the best camp of anyone, which.
- 24:56Speaker 3: Highly motivated, tremendous camp, and the Jaguars are managing his
- 24:58Speaker 3: time very caut sciously and he is getting the most
- 25:01Speaker 3: of it. On the back end, there are two undrafted
- 25:03Speaker 3: rookie defensive tackles who they are very pleased with, Guys
- 25:07Speaker 3: that they like a lot, Trevor Bowlers from Cow and
- 25:11Speaker 3: Jalen Hunt, two young defensive tackles who they think have
- 25:15Speaker 3: both the ability to play the run but also give
- 25:17Speaker 3: you some of that Albert Regis some of that get
- 25:19Speaker 3: up the field. For the most part, they really have
- 25:23Speaker 3: been pleased with what they've gotten from the defensive tackles.
- 25:26Speaker 4: And some of what we're talking about here is you're
- 25:30Speaker 4: thinking about right now, but guys that we're talking about,
- 25:34Speaker 4: a guy like Albert Regis may be a lot better
- 25:37Speaker 4: down the road than he is right now. So the
- 25:38Speaker 4: flashes we're talking about, the optimism we're talking about about
- 25:41Speaker 4: Bowlers in Hunt is the long term building part of
- 25:45Speaker 4: this thing, and that's still going on sort of as
- 25:48Speaker 4: we talk about this season.
- 25:50Speaker 2: Regis, i think, is one of those good examples where
- 25:52Speaker 2: it's like he's a big man, but he's going up
- 25:53Speaker 2: against really really big men at that position in the NFL,
- 25:56Speaker 2: and he's working behind Devon Hamilton, who I think we've
- 25:59Speaker 2: seen progress and is now so good that having that
- 26:02Speaker 2: ability to maybe have a year to kind of learn
- 26:04Speaker 2: under him will really help advance him into maybe his
- 26:06Speaker 2: second year.
- 26:07Speaker 4: And again to put in perspective what we're talking about here,
- 26:10Speaker 4: they weren't necessarily thrilled with Devon Hamilton this time last year.
- 26:14Speaker 4: I mean, they weren't down on him, but it wasn't
- 26:17Speaker 4: like they thought he was going to be the best
- 26:19Speaker 4: news tackle in football.
- 26:20Speaker 1: Well, Josh hens Allen thought it, but he was the
- 26:23Speaker 1: only one at the time.
- 26:23Speaker 5: Maybe he thought it.
- 26:24Speaker 4: With apologies to Josh, at this point last year, Devon
- 26:27Speaker 4: really wasn't that. So if they were, some of these
- 26:31Speaker 4: things can get ironed out. As the point, Bryan, you
- 26:34Speaker 4: never know.
- 26:34Speaker 3: You got to give it a chance, and they did
- 26:37Speaker 3: with Devon because number twenty twenty three, you know, from
- 26:39Speaker 3: a health perspective, it was a disaster for him and
- 26:42Speaker 3: he came back through twenty four. This coaching staff, it's
- 26:45Speaker 3: worth noting because we've talked about a number of players,
- 26:47Speaker 3: Devon's one of those guys. They've gotten more from him
- 26:50Speaker 3: than previous coaching they do. This group gets a lot
- 26:53Speaker 3: out of guys, which gives you a lot of reason
- 26:56Speaker 3: to be optimistic, and Devon Hamilton is a guy they
- 26:58Speaker 3: trust immensely.
- 27:00Speaker 2: The develop part of draft and develop. My hot take
- 27:02Speaker 2: is a little bit about the backup quarterback situation because
- 27:05Speaker 2: I know a lot of people are feeling some type
- 27:07Speaker 2: of way after watching that preseason matchup, and here's my
- 27:10Speaker 2: point of view. Should they go get a backup quarterback? Probably?
- 27:13Speaker 2: Are they going to do that? Absolutely not, And I
- 27:15Speaker 2: don't think anybody should expect them to because they're not
- 27:18Speaker 2: going to. They're very comfortable with the situation they're in.
- 27:20Speaker 2: And I kind of liken it too. Obviously, I work
- 27:23Speaker 2: for an NFL team. I don't gamble anymore, but when
- 27:24Speaker 2: I did, I like to go all in, you know,
- 27:26Speaker 2: I like to go big.
- 27:27Speaker 1: I like to go for it.
- 27:28Speaker 2: I want to get a good payout, and Trevor Lawrence
- 27:31Speaker 2: is where they have put all their money and all
- 27:33Speaker 2: their hopes and all their dreams, and I think it's
- 27:34Speaker 2: a fair place to place it after what we saw
- 27:36Speaker 2: from him last season. Hopefully it pays out really big,
- 27:39Speaker 2: but if not, on what anything happens to Trevor. I
- 27:42Speaker 2: don't know if this team is necessarily built to withstand
- 27:45Speaker 2: a very long injury of Trevor Lawrence. Maybe a game
- 27:48Speaker 2: or two, but that's just not the way they're gonna
- 27:50Speaker 2: build this team right now. So I don't think it's
- 27:52Speaker 2: realistic for anybody to kind of expect that to happen.
- 27:55Speaker 2: I don't know if you guys have heard anything different,
- 27:56Speaker 2: but I think it's gonna be exactly like what it
- 27:58Speaker 2: looks like.
- 28:00Speaker 3: He's not a long term solution as your backup. The
- 28:02Speaker 3: thing they liked the most about him, we already talked about.
- 28:05Speaker 3: He knows this system from his time with Grant in Minnesota,
- 28:10Speaker 3: and I'm told he is very involved in a lot
- 28:12Speaker 3: of the preparation work for quarterbacks, and so I don't
- 28:15Speaker 3: see him going anywhere. I don't know who you could
- 28:18Speaker 3: bring in. I don't know that there's anybody on the street,
- 28:20Speaker 3: anybody even on anyone else's roster. You go, oh, we'd
- 28:23Speaker 3: be much better with him.
- 28:24Speaker 5: It would be.
- 28:25Speaker 4: It would be a pretty dramatic shift in philosophy and
- 28:29Speaker 4: approach based on twenty five minutes. So I you know,
- 28:36Speaker 4: if they see that it's disastrous.
- 28:39Speaker 5: For a month.
- 28:41Speaker 4: Maybe they do something, but I would be surprised if
- 28:42Speaker 4: they did based on one sample size.
- 28:45Speaker 2: All right, say with son Jack Zam, we'll tell you
- 28:47Speaker 2: what's coming up the rest of the week, including joint practice.
- 29:00Speaker 6: Good and I thought the communication was solid. Thought Granted
- 29:03Speaker 6: a nice job kind of settling at halftime. I've been
- 29:06Speaker 6: in those moments where you're not a lot's working and
- 29:10Speaker 6: you're frustrated and you don't really have a ton to
- 29:13Speaker 6: go do, and it was really just like, let's just
- 29:15Speaker 6: go downhill and just run and run it and get downhill.
- 29:18Speaker 6: And I thought he did a nice job of mixing
- 29:20Speaker 6: it up when he needed to, and he was calm, cool, collected.
- 29:24Speaker 6: I was happy for him.
- 29:26Speaker 2: So head coach the nam con talking a little bit
- 29:28Speaker 2: about Grant Ydnsky. You called the plays in that game,
- 29:30Speaker 2: but was able to kind of rally the troops at
- 29:32Speaker 2: halftime and get things back on track. Getting things back
- 29:35Speaker 2: on track this week, Brian, what do you want to
- 29:36Speaker 2: see out of practice and joint practice sounded.
- 29:40Speaker 4: Tough, Yes, same, I mean you want to see a
- 29:44Speaker 4: better practice in they had against New Orleans last week.
- 29:47Speaker 4: I think that'll be the theme of the week without question.
- 29:49Speaker 1: All right, well we'll have all that coverage for you.
- 29:51Speaker 2: Would be back on Wednesday at joint practice this week
- 29:54Speaker 2: to give you a live look at how it goes down.
- 29:56Speaker 1: See then
