- 0:05Speaker 1: Well, hello, Hello, Hello. I know y'all not expecting to
- 0:09Speaker 1: see me this time of night, so I'm gonna be
- 0:11Speaker 1: very very quick. I want to make sure that I
- 0:13Speaker 1: participated in Day seventeen of the twenty one day challenge.
- 0:19Speaker 1: So I am yet here, y'all, I am yet here.
- 0:21Speaker 1: I am yet here. I just wanted to share, and
- 0:26Speaker 1: today is Day seventeen. Later on you will see me
- 0:30Speaker 1: back in a couple of hours during Day eighteen. I'm
- 0:32Speaker 1: probably gonna do it a little earlier. But today's challenge
- 0:36Speaker 1: is talking about a promo strategy. So today I get
- 0:40Speaker 1: an opportunity to share a little bit of why I
- 0:43Speaker 1: started aa LAC, the African American author Literacy Awareness campaign
- 0:48Speaker 1: and the Chasing Your Dream Book Tour. So I get
- 0:50Speaker 1: the opportunity to share that with you guys in this
- 0:55Speaker 1: particular challenge, So thank you for joining My title today
- 1:01Speaker 1: is the power of staying visible and building real relationships.
- 1:05Speaker 1: So again I want to thank you guys for joining me,
- 1:08Speaker 1: joining me, joining me. So I'm gonna jump right in,
- 1:12Speaker 1: not gonna be before your long, probably won't even be
- 1:14Speaker 1: here ten minutes, but just wanted to make sure that
- 1:17Speaker 1: I dropped this nugget for you and that you guys
- 1:21Speaker 1: stay connected. Y'all. We got four more days, well three
- 1:24Speaker 1: more days of this challenge. Well it's gonna be four
- 1:26Speaker 1: more days, but actually it is. It is day number eighteen.
- 1:30Speaker 1: I'm late. I'm sorry again, I apologize, but y'all understand this.
- 1:34Speaker 1: In an ever evolving world of publishing, it is not
- 1:38Speaker 1: enough to simply write a fantastic book. The difference between
- 1:42Speaker 1: an obscured and a successful book often lies and how
- 1:47Speaker 1: well you can market yourself in your work. Again, how
- 1:52Speaker 1: well you can market yourself in your work. One of
- 1:56Speaker 1: the most powerful lessons that I've learned in my own
- 1:59Speaker 1: journey as an author an advocate came in twenty sixteen
- 2:04Speaker 1: when I launched AA, the African American Author of Literacy
- 2:08Speaker 1: Awareness campaign. They're Chasing your Dream Book Tour and expo. Y'all.
- 2:12Speaker 1: It was about being more than just an event. It
- 2:16Speaker 1: was just more than just an event. It was actually
- 2:19Speaker 1: a movement. It was a movement designed to shine a
- 2:22Speaker 1: light on black and brown authors and to build authentic
- 2:26Speaker 1: bridge within our communities. What my desire was for people
- 2:34Speaker 1: to understand the concept of visibility and how it builds
- 2:38Speaker 1: trust within the community. I want them to be able
- 2:41Speaker 1: to identify strategies that foster relatability among diverse audience. And
- 2:47Speaker 1: then I want them to be able to apply message
- 2:50Speaker 1: of organizing impact inclusive community events. And then I want
- 2:55Speaker 1: them to have an outlet to evaluate the effectiveness of
- 2:59Speaker 1: direct engagement on initiative outcomes. So gonna draw some key
- 3:07Speaker 1: concepts for you guys, and some strategies that I use.
- 3:11Speaker 1: Understanding and knowing the role of visibility personal engagement. That
- 3:16Speaker 1: means physically showing up to demonstrate your commitment. You gotta
- 3:21Speaker 1: go out here and do something. It's humanized leaders that
- 3:25Speaker 1: make your mission tangible. Consistency, regularly showing up and being
- 3:31Speaker 1: presents in different communities strengthens your relationship and builds trust
- 3:36Speaker 1: to a lot of them Stuck in our ways. We
- 3:38Speaker 1: don't want to branch out, we don't want to collaborate.
- 3:41Speaker 1: But again, consistent, regularly presence and different communities, not always
- 3:47Speaker 1: leaning to the same place, but going to different communities, y'all.
- 3:52Speaker 1: Relatability in action storytelling. Sharing your personal story allows participants
- 3:58Speaker 1: to see themselves in your journey lead to a deeper
- 4:03Speaker 1: emotional connection. So when people can relate to you, when
- 4:07Speaker 1: people can connect to what you got going on. They're
- 4:10Speaker 1: drawn to you. And then we got to understand how
- 4:15Speaker 1: to be active listening, how people actively send, inviting and
- 4:21Speaker 1: valuing the voice of community members, Understanding and ensuring the
- 4:26Speaker 1: initiative address real needs, real needs. So we got to
- 4:32Speaker 1: make sure that when we're doing these events, when we're
- 4:34Speaker 1: doing these market that we are meeting the need. But
- 4:39Speaker 1: the most important thing and I will continue to stress
- 4:42Speaker 1: building real relationships. We can do that by hosting workshops, panels,
- 4:48Speaker 1: interactive formats encourage participation, knowledge sharing, and a sense of
- 4:54Speaker 1: ownership among attendees. Collaborating, y'all. Collaboration is key partner with
- 5:01Speaker 1: local organizations like your local schools, your local YMCAs, your
- 5:07Speaker 1: local libraries, just different organization, y'all. It leverages existing trusts
- 5:13Speaker 1: and cultural insight. It broadens your insight in your impact.
- 5:27Speaker 1: Three outcomes of direct engagements. So when you have an
- 5:31Speaker 1: opportunity to go and participate in live events and participate
- 5:35Speaker 1: in these in person events, you have an opportunity to
- 5:42Speaker 1: have three direct engagements. Increased participation, face to face interaction
- 5:48Speaker 1: years a higher engagement than having remote and interpersonal outreach.
- 5:54Speaker 1: So that's doing the lives, doing the stuff that we
- 6:00Speaker 1: do virtually, you can yield a higher engagement when people
- 6:06Speaker 1: are in person, diverse perspective, direct impact from community that
- 6:14Speaker 1: means different people showing up. It ensures initiative remains inclusive
- 6:20Speaker 1: and relevant. Mean it's not just gonna be focused on
- 6:26Speaker 1: my books, but for everybody that comes, and you get
- 6:29Speaker 1: different perspective from everybody that comes, so you get an
- 6:32Speaker 1: opportunity to really connect. That's why these events are important.
- 6:37Speaker 1: And then you can leave a lasting impact. Real relationships
- 6:40Speaker 1: are fostered by long term advocacy and the support for
- 6:45Speaker 1: the mission. When you understand the mission and the vision
- 6:48Speaker 1: and you provide that long term support, I'm gonna drop
- 6:53Speaker 1: some best practices and action steps and then y'all ain't
- 6:55Speaker 1: gonna before you long. I told you, I'm gonna keep
- 6:57Speaker 1: on going. So these are some things that you can
- 7:00Speaker 1: do regular in person events across various locations, urban, royal
- 7:07Speaker 1: and undeserving communities. If you know, for me, I remember
- 7:14Speaker 1: being back home in Anderson, South Carolina. We used to
- 7:18Speaker 1: go to the low income apartment come places. We used
- 7:22Speaker 1: to go to the Boys and Girls clubs. To these places.
- 7:27Speaker 1: We went to a lot of the Title five schools,
- 7:31Speaker 1: you have to find places where you can connect and
- 7:35Speaker 1: attend regular events. Schedule regular events, schedule show ups where
- 7:38Speaker 1: you could just go read to the kids thirty minutes
- 7:41Speaker 1: after school, pick a day and go read every week
- 7:44Speaker 1: and for the entire school year. It can be something
- 7:47Speaker 1: that that you do and that can be a part
- 7:50Speaker 1: of what you're doing. Design workshops that are in interactive
- 7:56Speaker 1: with opportunities for attendees to share their own experience. You
- 8:00Speaker 1: want people to be able to engage. You want people
- 8:03Speaker 1: to be able to share the things that they've been through.
- 8:05Speaker 1: When I tell you when people can relate, man, they
- 8:08Speaker 1: gonna buy your books. You won't have to worry about
- 8:10Speaker 1: trying to sell them. They gonna want to buy them.
- 8:13Speaker 1: You'll sell out in every event if you do these
- 8:16Speaker 1: things right. It's important that we're hosting panel discussions, like
- 8:22Speaker 1: how often do you host a panel discussion to talk
- 8:26Speaker 1: about your book or even invite book clubs to read
- 8:30Speaker 1: your book, or invite other experts in to talk about
- 8:34Speaker 1: different things, even local voices. It can encourage a diversey
- 8:40Speaker 1: opportunity to really see the diverseness in the world. And
- 8:47Speaker 1: it's not always just about our particular book, but just
- 8:50Speaker 1: providing different perspectives and allowing people to you know, engage.
- 8:57Speaker 1: You know, you allow someone to be a part of
- 9:00Speaker 1: your panel, even though you're trying to promote your book, y'all,
- 9:04Speaker 1: it will see it builds rittery, and then the community
- 9:09Speaker 1: seeds that they're supporting, and then they're gonna want to
- 9:12Speaker 1: support you. Collaborate within community organizations, organizations to tap into
- 9:17Speaker 1: local expertise and existing networks. Y'all. You never know who
- 9:23Speaker 1: the library is connected to. So connect to your library,
- 9:27Speaker 1: connect with your local chamber of commerce, connect with your
- 9:31Speaker 1: local arts community. Connect with these different communities because guess what,
- 9:35Speaker 1: they already have their own community. They already have their
- 9:41Speaker 1: networks and different things in place, and you never know
- 9:43Speaker 1: who's within those networks that may need your expertise, they
- 9:47Speaker 1: may need the things that you are sharing. So put
- 9:50Speaker 1: it out there. Get it out there, and one thing
- 9:53Speaker 1: you want to do, and all of these events that
- 9:56Speaker 1: you're doing, always follow up after events to maintain relationship,
- 10:01Speaker 1: gather feedback, and continually improve. We wanted to grow, We
- 10:07Speaker 1: wanted to evolve. We wanted to for this to be
- 10:11Speaker 1: more than you know what this one is. We want
- 10:15Speaker 1: every year to grow. We want every year to be different.
- 10:17Speaker 1: We want it to grow bigger and bigger and to
- 10:20Speaker 1: be more effective and more influenced. So, if there is
- 10:28Speaker 1: one strategy that I must say consistency elevates the quality
- 10:34Speaker 1: and the reach of community focused initiatives, it is the
- 10:38Speaker 1: commitment to bring both visible and relatable the chance of
- 10:43Speaker 1: your Dream Book tour impact was not simply a product
- 10:47Speaker 1: of travel or programming, but a direct result of showing
- 10:52Speaker 1: up authentically, prioritizing real relationships, and co creating a platform
- 10:59Speaker 1: for divers. Attendees did not just consume information, they became
- 11:05Speaker 1: an inaugural part of the movement, illustrating that visibility, relatability,
- 11:11Speaker 1: or catalysts for lasting change. So often authors are told
- 11:16Speaker 1: to focus on online as social media. While those tools
- 11:22Speaker 1: are valuable, the core of an effective promotion for me
- 11:27Speaker 1: has been meaningful engagement. People remember the genuine connections. They
- 11:32Speaker 1: want to know the person behind the book that drives
- 11:35Speaker 1: you and what they care about and how they can
- 11:38Speaker 1: relate that to their lives. What I want y'all to
- 11:42Speaker 1: take away from this, and I hope I didn't go
- 11:46Speaker 1: too fast, but what I want you all to take
- 11:48Speaker 1: away from this is building visibility isn't just about being seen,
- 11:53Speaker 1: it is about being felt. The Chasing your Dream Book
- 11:56Speaker 1: to a expo prove that when you step into your community,
- 12:00Speaker 1: invest in real relationships and do more than just promote
- 12:04Speaker 1: your book, you can contribute to a lasting legacy Rather
- 12:07Speaker 1: than whether than your launch and your first book, or
- 12:11Speaker 1: your fifth book or your hundredth book. Consider ways to
- 12:14Speaker 1: show up authentically, host a small event in your neighborhood,
- 12:18Speaker 1: partner with local schools, or simply share your story in
- 12:22Speaker 1: person whenever and however you can. These touch points do
- 12:27Speaker 1: not just sell books, but they create advocacy, build visibility,
- 12:31Speaker 1: and grow as far beyond simple making your presence known.
- 12:35Speaker 1: The Chasing your Dream Book tour and explorer clearly demonstrates
- 12:39Speaker 1: the power of authentic engagement within the community. When we
- 12:43Speaker 1: invest time and foster genuine relationship and take the initiative
- 12:48Speaker 1: to connect with others, we create a meaningful impact, not
- 12:52Speaker 1: just for our books, but for the personal and perfectional legacy.
- 12:58Speaker 1: Whether you are a debut author or a seasoned writer,
- 13:03Speaker 1: there's a tremendous value in showing up authentically, organizing small
- 13:09Speaker 1: local events, collaborating with schools, or simply sharing your journey
- 13:13Speaker 1: in person can make a lasting difference. This personal touch
- 13:17Speaker 1: points transfer readers, transform readers into advocates and supporters, building
- 13:24Speaker 1: a foundation that extends well beyond book sales. Ultimately, it
- 13:29Speaker 1: is the real human connection that ensures your story will
- 13:35Speaker 1: resonate and endure. In closing, y'all, In today's crowded publishing landscape,
- 13:43Speaker 1: visibility is a powerful asset, but the most effective when
- 13:50Speaker 1: anchored in authenticness. My experience with AA LAC and the
- 13:55Speaker 1: Chasing Your Dream Book tour have reforced, reinforced the significant
- 14:00Speaker 1: and successful marketing is fundamental about cultivating trust and fostering
- 14:06Speaker 1: genuine connections. As you promote your next project, remember that
- 14:11Speaker 1: the audience are seeking real stories, and sincere engagement allow
- 14:16Speaker 1: people to truly know who you are, your influence will
- 14:20Speaker 1: extend well beyond individual sales or events. Stay committed to
- 14:25Speaker 1: your vision and invite your community along for the journey.
- 14:31Speaker 1: And y'all, I hope that there has been something that
- 14:35Speaker 1: I have shared with you guys on tonight that will
- 14:38Speaker 1: help you on this journey. And I told y'all I
- 14:41Speaker 1: wasn't gonna be before you loan, y'all, I will be
- 14:43Speaker 1: back tomorrow later today, I will be back later today, y'all,
- 14:50Speaker 1: and we're gonna talk about real time engagement. We're going
- 14:54Speaker 1: to talk about real time engagement how hosting many live giveaways, polls, contests,
- 15:00Speaker 1: and different things can encourage viewers to tag friends and
- 15:05Speaker 1: answer live question. So, y'all, maybe tomorrow we'll go live
- 15:09Speaker 1: and host a poll or do some of these suggests.
- 15:13Speaker 1: So I'll see y'all back in a couple of hours. Y'all.
- 15:15Speaker 1: Enjoy this time, and I hope that there's something that
- 15:18Speaker 1: I drop that will help you on this journey, y'all. Now,
- 15:22Speaker 1: happy promo. Go promote your books, y'all. There's so many
- 15:26Speaker 1: different ways that you can do it. Book launch, ads, femails,
- 15:30Speaker 1: block tours, chasing your dream book towards ALAC magazines. All
- 15:35Speaker 1: those are ways, So do not limit yourself to one way,
- 15:39Speaker 1: and don't think that it always have to be a magazine.
- 15:42Speaker 1: A Billboard Live is the way. It worked for me,
- 15:46Speaker 1: and it'll work for you
